Take a bite out of cancer

It is time to get creative and supportive in the annual Relay for Life set for June 7 at Riverside Park from 10:00am to 10:00pm. This is an inspirational, non-competitive event for the Canadian Cancer Society and this year’s theme will be Take a Bite Out of Cancer. Jennifer Dies, coordinator for Community Giving for the Kamloops Relay for Life is excited about this year’s event. “It is like a block buster movie,” adds Jennifer. “The day will have you laughing and crying; you don’t want to miss it.” The day starts off with the Survivors Lap where cancer survivors and caregivers do the opening lap. “People lineup and cheer them as they go,” Jennifer says. “It is especially touching for recently diagnosed people. They get to see all the survivors and all those yellow shirts. They understand that they are not alone and that they can beat it.” She began as a participant for the Relay for Life eight years ago. “I went to an overnight event and it was inspiring. To be awake at 4:00am and to see the sun come up, that is what hope looks like to people with cancer. The event was contagious to me. I went home and told my husband and kids that we will never miss another event and we haven’t.” In the middle of the day is the Fight Back Ceremony and to con-

tumes,” comments Jennifer. There can be up to 15 people on a team that takes turns during the 12-hour event. You can also be a single participant if you don’t have a team. If you don’t want to walk there are many other ways to support the cause. “You can donate online, purchase a luminary or you can be put to work for a few hours as a volunteer,” says Jennifer. “Everybody has been touched by cancer whether it be yourself, family, a friend or coworker, it is something we have all been affected by. By being a part of Relay for Life you are helping the research, prevention and support against the cancer fight. It all goes a long way to help people in our community.” The money raised will go into the big pot of cancer funds and whatever the community needs, the community will get. Register a team at this year’s Relay for life and celebrate the survivors while commemorating those who have lost the battle with cancer. For more information, please contact Jennifer Dies at 250-833-4085 or kamloopsrelay@bc.cancer. ca. You can also visit facebook. com/pages/Relay-for-Life-Kamloops/734457996594084. “This is an amazing community event. You can see the ripples from it and how its affect is amazing,” concludes Jennifer. Ashley Demedeiros
we have almost 250 registered but expect 500 plus to come down to the event and take it in,” Jennifer adds. “We hope to exceed last year’s event.” New for this year’s Relay for Life is a fantastic entertainment lineup along with the fun theme of Take a Bite Out of Cancer. Teams are encouraged to dress up for the event. “We are hoping a lot of the teams will get on board with this theme and create awesome cos-

HELPING EMERGING ARTISTS
Western Canada Theatre received a $10,000 donation from the RBC Emerging Artists Project. RBC Branch Managers Dave Maurer, Dwight Harris and Norman Cooper presented the cheque to Daryl Cloran, artistic director of WCT, and Lori Marchand, general manager of WCT. Also present were five fine local young actors whose performances helped make our recent production of Les Misérables so very successful: Jaida Barker, Sarah Baughan, Kyra Bayers, Alexa Marshall and Sebastian Tow.
Cycling smarts put to the test at two-wheeled rodeo The City of Kamloops is hosting the eighth Annual Bike Rodeo on Saturday May 31 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Interior Savings Centre Lower Parking Lot. Kids of all ages are invited to come out to this free event. Bring your bike and helmet and put your bike smarts to the test! Find out how you can have fun and stay safe while riding your bike. The RCMP bike patrol and auxiliaries will be on hand to take kids through a pre-ride check, as well as review the rules of the road, proper hand signals, and more. Helmet safety tips, including assistance with proper fitting will also be offered. There will be face-painting and prizes for everyone. To register call 250-828-3500 and quote registration #228132. Remember Safety First when rid-
ing your bike. Always wear a helmet and always wear brightly colored or reflective clothing so that motorists can see you. Walk your
bike across all crosswalks. Use recognized hand signals to show motorists and other cyclists that you want to stop or turn.
Obnoxious odors may linger The City of Kamloops Sewage Treatment Plant is currently in the final stages of construction and commissioning. As a result of this work, a large portion of the treatment facility is currently offline and less than optimal treatment is being recognized, which unfortunately may generate obnoxious odors. If weather patterns continue in a similar pattern, the odors from the City lagoons may persist periodically over the next few days.
A remedial team that specializes in these types of odor events is being mobilized and will start emergency treatment of the lagoon system early next week and it is expected to have the excessive smell under control by the middle of the week. The new sewage treatment plant will have several odor control processes in place once completed and online (anticipated for late June), so any smells from the plant are expected to be mitigated.
Join the ECOSmart Team and the CAP Team on Wednesday, June 4 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm to celebrate Clean Air Day. On the 400 Block of Victoria Street, in conjunction with the Downtown Farmer’s Market, a variety of activities, information booths and games for all ages will be offered throughout the day. At Clean Air Day, you can check out a transit bus, and learn how to attach a bicycle to the bike rack; discover alternative transportation options; get inside an electric car; learn how to compost; get up close to one of the garbage/recycling trucks and talk to a collector; have fun with kids games and face-painting; learn about Xeriscaping, water conservation and many more ways to be environmentally conscious; and join Mayor Milobar at 1:00 pm for the planting of a tree. There will be multiple giveaways and prizes and an opportunity to win a push reel lawn mower! Clean Air Day is a national event held each year on the first Wednesday of June during Environment Week. Clean Air Day is a focal point for information and action on clean air and climate change issues. The Government of Canada proclaimed Clean Air Day in 1999 in response to requests from community-based environmental, health and transportation groups. Nation-wide activities continue to emphasize a grassroots approach. For more information on Clean Air Day please visit kamloops.ca/environment/cleanairday.shtml.

COMMUNITY
Thanks to many helping hands, Marigold Mile along Columbia Street near 1st Avenue has been restored to its full glory.
People, plants and pride The Kamloops Communities in Bloom Committee, City Council, NSBIA and the KCBIA have partnered for the Kamloops Communities in Bloom Planter Competition. This popular and blooming friendly competition will be three locations this year with a total of 13 planters. A North Shore location, the 100 block of Victoria Street Downtown and at the Tourism Kamloops Visitor Centre Uptown. In this annual Planter Competition, Mayor, City Council, TIB Council and guest politicians/celebrities will compete for the most creatively planted planter pot. For the first time ever, residents are being invited to get involved. Senior’s residences, student residences strata groups and non-profits to become team members are being invited. Teams also include one of the amazing city gardeners. (Honestly they are the only ones that know what they are doing!) There is a sponsorship fee to join. The residence or non-profit can cover this or add a business to your team and they can be the sponsor. These funds support the Kamloops Communities in
Bloom program. Planting day is June 2 with judging in late July or early August. For more information, please contact the KCBIA at info@kcbia.com.
Legion bursary The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 52, Kamloops, provides education bursaries for university students. To qualify, a student is required to show documentation that one of their immediate family members is serving, or has served, in the Canadian or British military; additionally, the student must demonstrate financial need. Those students who are currently serving in the military, in either regular or reserve units, are also eligible to apply. Being a Legion member is not required to apply. Education bursary applications are due June 15 at Branch 52 and must include all the required documentation. To receive an application or for more information regarding bursaries, please contact Brenda Thompson, bursary chair, by email at administrator@kamloopslegion.com.
Due to high water levels, swift currents and heavy debris in the North and South Thompson River, Kamloops RCMP are issuing an advisory to all users of these waterways. Boating or swimming in any area where there is direct current flow is not recommended at this time. The present conditions on these waterways create a significant risk for vessel damage and for personal injury or death in the event of capsize or personal exposure to the direct currents in the river. These same conditions also increase the risk for rescue personnel who may be called upon to provide assistance to stranded vessels or individuals caught in fast moving currents. Two items of particular note are the exceptional amount of debris in the North Thompson at this time and the very low clearance level at the CN Rail Bridge behind Interior Savings Centre. Extreme caution should be exercised around this train bridge due to the high water level. Daily assessments are being made of the water volumes in both of these rivers. The latest predictions are that the levels may begin to fall within the next 36 hours but this is completely weather dependent, therefore is subject to change. Any boat operators and water enthusiasts who are contemplating use of the waterways are asked to exercise caution and good judgment.

The Customer Care and Patrol (CAP) Team is back for the summer! Once again, the team, which works along with the KCBIA, will be patrolling the streets of Downtown Kamloops, ensuring the city remains one of British Columbia’s friendliest cities. This year’s team sees seven new members and one returning, all from a variety of areas of study, such as police and justice, tourism, law, drama and public relations, creating one of the most dynamic teams yet. Once again the team will run in two capacities, ambassador and safety. The ambassador members, which include Cameron, Madyson, Erin and Laura, will focus on planning and implementing KCBIA events, assisting tourists and providing a stronger sense of community within the downtown core. The safety members, which include Hafiz, Alex, Dana and Aaron, will assist in crime prevention through presence by being active eyes and ears for both the RCMP and By-Law. Though there are two capacities, all the CAP members’ main goal is to work to create a better Downtown Kamloops for everyone. The CAP Team will be offering their services to businesses within the BIA area and patrolling the streets from first to tenth and from Columbia to Riverside Park. Along with patrolling, you will see the team working at all of the exciting summer events, including their fundraiser golf tournament at the Dunes Golf Course on June 12. They are looking for sponsorship, door prizes, silent auction items and golf teams. It’s a fun filled event and they would love to have your participation. Visit the website at KCBIA.com to register. Keep an eye out for their red shirts between 9:00am and 8:00pm Monday to Saturday, and 12:00pm to 6:00pm on Sundays, and if you have any questions or comments feel free to flag them down. The CAP Team can be reached by phone at 250-572-3008 or 250-5743009 or by email at capteam@kcbia.com, and don’t forget to like their Facebook page! They are here to help, and are looking forward to another great summer!

echo stargazer GEMINI (May 22-June 21) The cosmic accent is on communications, scheduling, education and short trips (either in distance or in time). This new moon brings to you a fresh influx of energy. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Mercury travels through your sign between May 29 and June 16. It will turn retrograde on June 7 and re-cross old territory. You may do the same. During this period there likely will be greater emphasis on communications, errands, and other short distance travels. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You have a busy and fairly complicated week. You may be disappointed in the sector that rules taxes, debts, or investments. Meanwhile, you have positive outcomes in the sector that rules travel, communications, siblings or roommates. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) You are finishing a work project and shifting gears into new territory this week. You will be focusing on communications with friends, acquaintances and building your network. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You are concluding a project or even a relationship situation. The mood is upbeat and happy. There are favourable omens related to travel, the Internet, education, publishing, or the law. It is a good time to write something that has been on your mind for a while. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 –Nov. 22) You have a sense of physical strength at this time that will be especially beneficial if you are exercising or in any type of competition. Work that uses your large muscles will have a soothing and pleasant effect when you rest. You may be the beneficiary of small gifts or tokens of esteem from others who care about you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Your mood is expansive and optimistic this week. It is one of those “good luck” times that occasionally happen to the Archers. You have a grasp of the big picture and could use this energy to promote your projects and gain support. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) Our culture has an unhealthy game called guilt versus anger. There is a requirement that must be met and you are pegged as the rescuer. If you don’t adopt the role, you will feel a sense of social guilt. But when you do, there is anger underneath the action because after all, why should you be required to do this thing? AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You are still in the after-glow of the Jupiter trine Saturn aspect (exact last week). You are reaping benefits of a work well done during this period. Perhaps there has been an experience that makes this very clear. You or your team is on the winning side because you have done your homework thoroughly. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Something unnoticed related to your home or property may suddenly break through your consciousness with a need of repair. It may be in the pipes or related to water. If not physical property, you may discover that your relationship to a family member is not what you thought. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) This is a fine week to run a race or climb a mountain. But save some time to attend to your significant other. Your communications are open and honest, just the right combination to work things out. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Venus, your ruling planet, enters your sign on May 28 and will be with you through June 22. You always have an interest in beauty and this transit notches it upward by a couple of pegs. You may redecorate yourself with new glasses, clothing, or hairstyle.
