As the summer road construction begins, traffic congestion is almost a given. With traffic congestion often times tempers flare as motorists are forced to wait. With the Overlanders Bridge Rehabilitaion project underway, the City of Kamloops is encouraging motorists to use the “Zipper Merge” technique. As you see the “lane closed ahead” sign and traffic backing up, stay in your current lane up to the point of merge. Then take turns with other drivers to safely and smoothly ease into the remaining lane. The Zipper Merge has shown to reduce accidents and improves safety by eliminating speed differences between the two lanes. It reduces the overall length of traffic backup by as much as 40 per cent and creates a sense of fairness and equity that all lanes are moving at the same rate. Some have argued that the Zipper Merge is considered rude but what could be more polite than an “after you” approach to letting someone through and then taking turns? It is a polite and distinctly Canadian way of handling the driving delays this summer so stay cool, make sure to give yourself a bit of extra time to get to your destination and know that we are all in the same bus.

Downtown Spring Festival street spectacular - continued from front and Caroline has amazing voice, it should be a lot of fun. Last but not least we are introducing our Downtown Festival Pass this week, which will award prizes to frequent downtown shoppers. Come visit us for Spring!” The Downtown Shopper Reward Program is back as well and all merchants who are currently part of the Marketing Cooperative will be ready to give out stamps for weekly draws as well as a grand prize draw at the end of the festival. Throughout the summer, shoppers will be encouraged to shop and eat downtown and each time they spend $25.00 at any participating downtown establishment they will receive a stamp. Collect five for a chance at one of the lucky draws! Some of the special events planned include BCLC hosting their 30th birthday

party on Thursday, May 14 in front of City Hall where over five hundred people will converge to celebrate 30 years of playing it forward in our community between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. There will be music, food and fun. Everyone is invited to attend. On Saturday, May 16 you will not be able to drive on 4th Avenue between Lansdowne and Victoria Street because the Spring Festival will have transformed the entire area for a day of performances, music and art. From 11:00 am until 2:00 pm expect to see many painted faces and merriment as the KCBIA presents “Clowning Around” when clowns, clowns and even more clowns will descend on the downtown area encouraging participants to join their band of jovial jesters by donning face paint or performing with the happy harlequins.

Evan Christian will be painting mini murals on the 200 block of Victoria Street throughout the day on Saturday, May 16 and Kelly Norwood, an artist who specializes in traditional hand pin striping, lettering, signs and art will be working on a mini mural on 3rd Avenue outside the old Oops Café spot. Merchants and businesses are welcome to book the main stage throughout the day for their own demonstrations, shows and performances. The main stage will be up between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm on Saturday with fashion, gadgets, information on products and so many other special performances from our local merchants and associates. Saturday’s events will be wrapped up with a band to welcome spring as the finale. See you there! Trina Budai

City updates its Food Trucks program For the 2015 season, the On-Street Food Trucks Program will focus on encouraging vendors to provide great food at the City’s beautifully landscaped Gaglardi Square. Up to two standard-sized food trucks may be permitted to operate at the same time at this Seymour Street location weekdays, while one truck may be permitted weekends. Earlier set-up hours (9:00 am weekdays, and 7:00 am weekends) provide opportunity for increased food service at this location. The City’s removal of the on-street vending locations at Victoria Street and 5th Avenue is intended to protect bricks-and-mortar restaurants on Victoria Street. This goal is also advanced by the City’s bylaw requirement that food trucks operating on private property maintain a 50-metre setback from existing

restaurants. Additional changes to food trucks regulations for 2015 include: allowing food trucks on private property in the Tranquille Market Street District; at the Kamloops Airport; and in an expanded range of industrial areas (subject to approval by property owners). The proposed changes come through input gathered from Business Improvement Associations and food truck operators that participated in the 2014 pilot project. The intention of the changes is to provide increased opportunity for food vending in the City without adversely impacting area restaurants. Specific operating criteria for interested food vendors can be obtained by contacting the City of Kamloops Business License office at blicensed@kamloops.ca or 250-828-3481.

Tuesday, April 14 marked the return of the bi-annual Kamloops Hiring Fair held at the Interior Savings Centre, presented by Open Door Group and the Kamloops Employment Service Network who manage the WorkBC Employment Services Centres in Kamloops. “In the past few years we have seen thousands of job seekers attend our Kamloops Hiring Fairs to connect with employers and service providers. The success has stretched so far that we have had employers from Vancouver, Edmonton and even Minnesota attend the event. Word has spread that Kamloops has a diverse, skilled talent pool of job seekers and our employers want to capitalize on the opportunity to connect with them,” says Kevin Watt, organizer of the job fair for Open Door Group.

Kamloops Walks to End MS

On May 24 more than 6,000 British Columbians will lace up for the Scotiabank MS Walk and join together in the fight to end multiple sclerosis. Danica Therrien, a Team Captain in the Kamloops Scotiabank Walk says, “I walk for my childhood friend and the thousands of Canadians living with MS. When my friend was diagnosed, we

didn’t know much about multiple sclerosis. Now, we know, and we want all Canadians to know about MS. I walk, because together, we can educate, show support, and we can find the cure”. The Scotiabank MS Walk features a wheelchair accessible route supporting participants who use mobility aids. To register for the Kamloops

Scotiabank MS Walk, visit mswalks.ca or call 250314-0773. New for the Kamloops Scotiabank MS Walk, when participants register and raise at least $20, they will be entered to win a fantastic night out in Vancouver prize package. Last year over 550 participants raised approximately $78,000 for the MS Society, Kamloops and Area Chapter.

The Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) invites Grade 12 students going on to post-secondary studies in the arts to apply for its annual scholarship. The application deadline is May 31. The KAC’s Julia AppleyMitra Youth Scholarship is intended to support local emerging artists. Ms. Mitra was, and continues to be, a strong advocate for the inclusion of all artists in the growth of the arts commu-

nity in Kamloops. Up to two scholarships of $500.00 each may be awarded annually to individuals graduating from Grade 12 who are going on to pursue post-secondary studies in art and graphics, music, drama or dance. The application may be downloaded at www.kamloopsarts.ca/programs/ grants-scholarships. One of last year’s scholarship recipients was Marta

Oran, who is pursuing studies in theatre arts. “To be honest, I didn’t know if I was going to go to university straight out of high school due to money issues,” says Marta, who recently completed her first year of studies at TRU. “But receiving the scholarship from the Kamloops Arts Council encouraged me and this summer, I will be completing an acting program in New York City.”

RCMP enlist Alexa’s Bus

Once again Kamloops RCMP will have the use of Alexa’s Bus to enhance their enforcement on impaired drivers. This mobile unit contains all the equipment required to collect evidence and process the impaired drivers efficiently and effectively at roadside locations. It eliminates the need to transport persons back to the detachment to conduct the tests and seek legal advice. Alexa’s bus would not have come to be without the support of ICBC, MADD, the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation, Road Safety Partners and community supporters who donated to the campaign. Citizens can expect to see the bus out at road checks and community events over the next week.

Fishing in a puddle It was raining hard and a big puddle had formed in front of an Irish pub. An old man stood beside the puddle holding a stick with a string on the end and jiggled it up and down in the water. A curious gentleman asked what he was doing. “Fishing,” replied the old man. “Poor old fool,” thought the gentleman. So he invited the old man to have a drink in the pub. Feeling he should

start some conversation while they were sipping their whisky, the gentleman asked, “And how many have you caught?” “You’re the eighth.”

What will you do for golf? Four married guys go golfing on Sunday. During the 3rd hole the following conversation ensued: First Guy: “Man, you have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out golfing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend.” Second Guy:

“That’s nothing, I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool.” Third Guy: “Man, you both have it easy! Preggoland

IT MUST BE SPRING

The fourth film in the Kamloops Film Society’s Spring Film Series is Preggoland, screening on Thursday, May 7 starting at 7 pm at the Paramount Theatre. Directed by Jacob Tierney and starring Sonja Bennett, James Caan and Danny Trejo. “Preggoland” is a playful, hilarious, and sharply written comedydrama about our societal obsession with pregnancy and babies. While it shares some surface similarities with recent female-driven Hollywood comedies, the film digs deeper. The result is a fresh tale with a bittersweet edge, enormous spirit, remarkably self-aware and wonderfully drawn characters. Caan gives one of his most endearing performances as the deliriously happy grandfather-(not)-to-be. Luminous screenwriter/star Bennett is a marvel as the wickedly resourceful Ruth and strikes a sublime balance between absurdity, vulnerability, and resilience. Tickets are available in advance Ladybug Landscaping staff (L-R) Jacqueline Newman and Dakoda Foeller take a break between jobs recently at MovieMart (444 St. Paul) and in Downtown Kamloops. They offer full service landscaping which includes lawn maintenance and clean at the Paramount Theatre (503 Q2 – MAY – 2015 – CANADA up, soft and hard scaping, as well as irrigation. Victoria Street). 2014/2015 Season | Bruce Dunn: Music Director www.kamloopssymphony.com

ECHO STARGAZER

DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) It might have begun with something simple but it set the wheels in motion and the change is now obvious. Not only do you look and feel different but recent events have also given you a new vision on how you fit into the bigger picture. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Yes, your energy is low, and the behind the scenes battle might still bring a few surprises but you’re almost out of the woods and the future is looking bright. New faces are smiling and enticing you to take a chance. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) You’d love to lend a helping hand but make sure it’s on your terms. Saying yes one too many times will actually close a door you hoped would stay open. Get out into your world and say hello. An old lover returns your message. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) Work is beginning to push more than just your buttons but rewards are waiting if you can stay out of trouble. Get out with friends and tell them your problems. It’s still a good time to buy a lottery ticket. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Luck is still flowing behind the scenes in secret affairs and relationships. If someone tries to sneak something past you, they’ll be caught. Take the high road and simply do your best to be your best. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A financial wish comes true with the help of someone from a distance. It’ll leave you wondering why you didn’t give a stranger a better chance. This week will restore your faith in yourself and hopefully your confidence in love. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You’re a loving sign with a lot to give but this week love simply asks for too much. Set your boundaries and make them stick. You’ve finally realized the waiting game is the same as going it alone. Be the love you’d like to receive. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Love brings unexpected rewards but patience is required to accept them. You’ll second guess a decision but the opportunity has already expired. Sudden changes in your bank balance leave you with a smile. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Resist the urge to force a creative effort onto the team. Your ideas are being noticed and accepted but it’s going to take time to implement them. Push hard at the gym. You’ll want to look your best when love smiles back. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) The new job becomes official and although it’ll take you away from home, it’ll also reveal unexpected opportunities. A playful attitude can transform someone close into more than just a friend. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Hidden within a group of new friends is a game changer that will help clear nagging hurdles. Difficult decisions will require soft words. You’ll still be seen as the bad guy but decision made out of love will be accepted peacefully. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) A positive change has the corporate ladder calling your name. The bosses see you as a responsible and hard working leader who’s especially skilled at working the books. Be the first in with money saving ideas and rewards will follow.
