Alleycats now prowl our back alleys The back alleys of downtown Kamloops have become a little more vibrant and inviting thanks to the Alley Art Gallery program. This is a Job Creation Partnership the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) has embarked on with the Provincial Government and the Kamloops Arts Council for the past four years. The most recent piece of work to be completed was done by Evan Christian and is a mural of two Marilyn Monroes on the backside of Headhunters on 350 Seymour Street. This program is not only a way to create jobs, it is also a means to prevent crime and make the city’s back alleys more friendly and inviting and free of graffiti. “It is for crime prevention; taggers generally won’t touch somebody’s art work. We tackle an area of the city, which is often forgotten. To make the alleys more walkable and have people feel more comfortable,” says Gay Pooler, administrator for the KCBIA. In the City of Kamloops Bylaws there is a clear guideline about graffiti. No person shall place graffiti on a building, structure, wall, fence or any other surface that is visible from a public place. Every person who violates this section may be served with a violation notice and shall be required to pay a fine of a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $2,000. What makes this mural very unique is the use of spray paint. “They wanted a different flavor,” comments Evan about the graffiti inspired texture, shading and colours. “The owner of the building had a poster which had four Monroes on it, I had to do two to scale it down.” Evan was excited about this project as he has experience with spray paint and doing larger

scaled artwork on unique surfaces. “I have done some large scale stuff before, but nothing that size,” says Evan of his stunning portrait of the famous Marilyn Monroe, which covers the entire wall. Many other interesting elements came into play with this project. It was set to start in August but the fire at the thrift shop next door put a hold on the project. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. “They had to put in a new wall. Before it was a garage door. The wall was

a much better material to work with. It looks much better than it would have with the door,” says Evan. Also, one day a giant dumpster was in front of the wall. “It was a long weekend. I had to work between the dumpster and the wall,” jokes Evan. The mural took Evan around a month with him working on weekends and after work, if the weather permitted. “It was a fun project. New RIH Clinical Services Building Health Minister Terry Lake, Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone, elected officials, Interior Health representatives, staff and health-care partners gathered last week to mark the start of construction on the new Clinical Services Building. “Today marks one more step in providing high-quality acute care to residents of the Kamloops region and is evidence of our commitment to the full redevelopment of Royal Inland Hospital,” says Terry. Once complete, the Clinical Services Building will feature an expanded and enhanced space for medical outpatient services, such as IV therapy, as well as the vascular improvement program, lab, community respiratory therapy, pre-surgical screening, cardiology and neurodiagnostics. The Clinical Services Building will also include clinical education program space, the UBC medical school, and improved site access with additional parkade stalls and a pedestrian bridge link connecting the new building to the main hospital. “The Clinical Services Building will ensure better access to Royal Inland Hospital while addressing the increasing demand for outpatient services,” adds Kamloops South Thompson MLA
Todd Stone. “The Clinical Services Building is the first phase of Royal Inland Hospital’s redevelopment and will lay the groundwork for future expansion at the hospital.” Royal Inland Hospital’s walkin care unit is a busy place. Patients who regularly come in for treatment for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis or iron deficiency - every few weeks, or even several times a week - may find it challenging to walk many steps or longer distances. Outpatients will be able to park just steps from an elevator, which will whisk them directly to a variety of services. “Interior Health’s priority is the provision of safe, quality care to patients in all areas of our health authority. With the CSB, patients in the Kamloops region will be able to access their patient care needs in an environment that is both expanded and has easier access,” says Interior Health board chair Norman Embree. In March 2014, Bird Construction was named the design builder for the Clinical Services Building. The company has spent the last month preparing for the construction phase, which will take approximately two years. “The Clinical Services Building will boost our local economy
with new jobs in the construction industry, which is great news for residents of Kamloops and the surrounding region,” adds Thompson Regional Hospital District chair Peter Milobar. “I am excited to see the Clinical Services Building project moving forward and eagerly anticipate its completion.” The Clinical Services Building project cost is approximately $79.8 million, and will be shared between the Province and the Thompson Regional Hospital District. Royal Inland Hospital serves the Kamloops-area as well as patients and families throughout the Thompson, Cariboo and Shuswap regions, from Merritt to Lillooet, and Williams Lake to Salmon Arm. “The Clinical Services Building represents an important investment in health care for thousands of residents, including those in my hometown of Ashcroft,” comments Fraser Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart. “The entire region will benefit from the enhanced services that will be offered at the Clinical Services Building.” The Clinical Services Building project will create an estimated 280 jobs in direct employment and an additional 235 jobs in supplier industries.
- continued from front very happy to see it finished. There have been many touch ups and sitting back to really take a good look at it to ensure it was perfection. Marking the fun and unique murals around the alleys in the Downtown core are the Alley Cats. These are little metal silhouettes of cats attached to the buildings, which act as address markers for the mural viewers. “The cats are a great attraction,” comments Gay. “The alleycats were created by Laura Bittante who had the idea for several years. It is great to have address markers in the alleys to supplement the front of store address.” This summer the KCBIA has plans for three more murals to go up. Currently there are more pieces of art planned for Visions Electronics, the Hampton Gallery and the third one is unknown at this time. Keep your eyes peeled for more of Evan’s work around town. He has some upcoming projects, which are sure to be stunning, contact him at evanchristianartist@ gmail.com. Also, there are many more murals to go up thanks to the KCBIA and Kamloops Arts Council. For more information please visit kcbia.com/backalleyart/ or in the new Downtown Directory. Ashley Demedeiros

The Kamloops Symphony is busy with the Beethoven Festival, which is on now until May 10. Bruce Dunn, Music Director for the Symphony, was spotted at the Kamloops Farmers Market on Saturday as Caitlin Molson ran the booth. Tickets for the festival events can be bought at Kamloops Live! Box Office.
The third Kamloops Timeraiser event is tonight at the TRU Mountain Room starting at 7:00pm. The Timeraiser is part volunteer fair, part silent art auction and part night on the town. Throughout the evening, meet with different agencies (including the Kamloops Art Council!) and match your skills to their needs. Once you have made your matches, you are eligible to bid on original artwork by local artists. The big twist is rather than bid money, you bid volunteer hours. The Kamloops Timeraiser is an independently run event. Visit kamloops.timeraiser.ca for more information.
Development of the Performing Arts Centre The development of a spectacular new Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on Victoria Street, adjacent to the HotelFive540Forty (Hotel 540), will not only become a cultural focal point for Kamloops but also activate and enhance Victoria Street as a cultural spine for the city, according to the owners of Hotel540. “We are extremely pleased that our preliminary concept and design has concluded that the Performing Arts Centre will fit comfortably on the site with no compromises to design or performance. The PAC will become an iconic architectural highlight that reinforces downtown Kamloops,” states Rob Gritten, president of National Hospitality Group Inc., owners of Hotel 540. “The location at the current east end of Kamloops’ cultural spring will accelerate and encourage continued growth east on Victoria Street.” Kasian Architecture, one of the top 100 Architecture, Interior Design
and Planning firms in the world and designers of the new Chilliwack Cultural Centre, worked with the company on the development of the concept for Kamloops. Over the past 30 years Kasian have earned global recognition for their collaborative approach to design. Attention has been given to responding to the facility needs identified by the Performing Arts Centre Committee. The company’s initial vision for the centre would incorporate not only a 360+ car parkade but also utilize hotel space and services to facilitate efficiencies and operational cost saving for the centre. The PAC would accommodate highly efficient, intimate seating with excellent sight lines in an environmentally efficient and locally connected structure, together with a full program of support space and functions. The location adjacent to the hotel will allow the Centre to offer the potential to accommodate uses such as conferences,
lectures, simulcast events and other functions, drawing additional business to Kamloops. “We’ve had very preliminary discussions with both the City and the Performing Arts Centre Committee and believe that they are open to considering this concept as one that will not only result in a great facility but will enhance the downtown core while presenting an opportunity to share the cost with the private sector,” states Peter Armstrong, executive chair of the Armstrong Group, owners of the Rocky Mountaineer and a partner in Hotel 540. The opportunity to develop this concept resulted from discussions with Gateway Casino who have been most cooperative in conceptualizing the utilization of the current Lake City Casino site along with adjacent properties for the PAC. “We see this as an exciting potential win for everyone and believe that it would be of tremendous value to
the city of Kamloops, not only because we feel it is the best location for the PAC, but also from a long term planning approach to further development east along Victoria Street. We look forward to further consultation with stakeholders on this project including consideration of various partnership models to assist in moving the Performing Arts Centre from concept to reality,” concludes Rob.

Shalen Curle is excited about the move. “We moved at the beginning of March. It has been a great opportunity to create the space we have always wanted.” With their new location came more space, twice as much to be exact. “It is amazing,” says Sha-
len. “We have an infrared sauna, showers, a lot of free parking and a practitioner room. We can offer more to our clients and friends.” The schedule has stayed the same with over 49 offerings a week. You can enjoy Yoga, Zumba, Pilates, Belly Dance, Latin Dance, Fitness, Meditation and Hoop Fit just to name a few classes. Come into Let’s Move Studio today and check out their new urban Zen lounge. Jack studies the pieces for a moment, looks at the box, then turns to his mom and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a tiger.” He takes her hand and says, “Second, I want you to relax. Let’s have a nice cup of tea and then,” he sighed, “let’s put all these Frosted Flakes back in the box”.
Forever patiently waiting A teenage boy is getting ready to take his girlfriend to the prom. First he goes to rent a tux, but there’s a long tux line at the shop and it takes forever. Next, he has to get some flowers, so he heads over to the florist and there’s a huge flower line there. He waits forever but eventually gets the flowers. Then he heads out to rent a limo.
Unfortunately, there’s a large limo line at the rental office, but he’s patient and gets the job done. Finally, the day of the prom comes. The two are dancing happily and his girlfriend is having a great time. When the song is over, she asks him to get her some punch, so he heads over to the punch table and there’s no punch line.
Apparently, someone in New York gets stabbed every 52 seconds. That poor person.
A drink named after you A grasshopper walks into a bar. The bartender says to him, “Hey, we have a drink named after you.” The grasshopper replies, “You have a drink named Murray?”

Don Hay returns home as head coach The Kamloops Blazers Hockey Club has announced that the team has hired Don Hay as head coach. “Don is one of the most successful junior hockey coaches of all-time,” says President and Governor, Tom Gaglardi. “He has done nothing but win and develop world class hockey players.” Don has a long-standing history in Kamloops. The Kamloops native started his coaching career with the Blazers as an Assistant Coach from 1986 until 1992. He then took over as head coach of
the Blazers from 1992 to 1995. In Don’s nine seasons with the Kamloops Blazers the franchise won four WHL Championships and three Memorial Cups. “On behalf of our ownership group, we are thrilled to have Don back home with the Kamloops Blazers organization. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) While Mars is retrograde it is common to plateau on physical goals, such as weight loss, but it is temporary. Don’t let this plateau discourage you from what works. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Newer romantic relationships may be put on hold for a few weeks. Somehow it just doesn’t feel like the right time to pursue a new love. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Because Mars rules machinery and tools of all kinds, there may be breakdowns of household gadgetry or vehicles that require repair. It is best to avoid buying new mechanical items while Mars is retrograding. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Mars in this territory may represent the need to make repairs. Don’t ignore strange car noises. It is possible that you are irritated with siblings, roommates, or neighbors, but now is not the time to initiate. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) You may feel absolutely compelled to purchase something expensive and impractical. It is more favourable to wait out the transit and see how you feel about it in late June. Meanwhile there may be more outgo than income, so use careful judgment about expenditures. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Your physical and libidinal energy may go into a dip for a while. You may be surprised to find that you have changed your mind about circumstances and people in your life. You haven’t lost your mind. Be honest about your need for a rest rather than leaving others hanging. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You probably will not have the energy and drive to which you are accustomed. It will do little good to beat yourself up over this issue. Consider that Mars is asking you to slow down, just for a couple of months. Your mind needs time for reflection about your next direction. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You may be recognizing the need to back off or back out of some of your friendships and community associations during this period. At minimum you will be reassessing why you are involved and whether you wish to continue in the future. If your motive for pursuing these activities is merely habit, maybe you need a break. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) You may have thought you were headed in one direction, and now suddenly you are shifting into neutral or reverse. If so, this period offers a message to think this one over for a while. You probably need a better foundation or a truer motive to move forward. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You likely will experience delays in activities concerning the law, education, publishing and travel. You may have to redo paperwork in order to accomplish the same thing in a different style or format. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Activities concerning taxes, insurance payoffs, government funding, and loans will likely be delayed, and maybe even denied. This is a good time to talk with your partner about issues concerning joint resources. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) If you have enemies, let them make the first move and you will be assured of ultimate victory over the issue. Old issues in your primary relationships may be surfacing. If so, consider it an opportunity to handle it with greater maturity this time. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Vivian Carol. For daily horoscopes go to horoscopesbyvivian.com
