This year deck the halls with science There may not be snow on the ground but the holiday season is definitely on its way. The Christmas season kicks off here in the downtown core with the famous Lights in the Night Christmas Party on November 27 and annual Santa Claus parade on November 29. Joining the ‘Once Upon a Time’ themed parade this year for a second time is the Big Little Science Centre. It’s a fantastic theme for the science centre as they themselves once upon a time in a little room in David Thompson Elementary became the Big Little Science Centre that could. The journey of scientific discovery started by the fabulous Gordon Gore, a retired Westsyde High School Science teacher has grown exponentially since its inception and today occupies nearly half of the former Happyvale School at 665 Holt Street. “Watch for the Big Little Science Centre in the parade this year,” exclaims Susan Hammond, assistant operator of the centre. “This is the second time we have been in the parade but the first time with a float!” Although they are physically located on the North Shore, the Big Little Science Centre can be seen participating in activities and events all around the city. They are frequently at Riverside Park during special events and like to come out to interact with children, tourists and families who have yet to visit their location. For those who have never visited the centre, you are missing out! Almost every kid in the school district has some experience with the science centre. Whether on a discovery field trip with school, a trip with parents on the weekends, or enrollment in one of their diverse array of clubs and camps, kids love to visit. They make learning fun and adventurous, so

much so that most of their visitors don’t even realize they are soaking up science theory and knowledge. As we embark into the holiday season it is important to remember what is important. Topping the list above presents and hoopla is good, old-fashioned quality time spent with family and loved ones. The Big Little Science Centre is a perfect example of something you can do with your family over the holidays that will bring you closer together and allow you to practice the true meaning of Christmas.
There are three self-guided hands-on science rooms filed with more than 140 different stations. Visitors of all ages (myself included) love to drop marbles, yell into foam, try to balance puzzles and much, much more. In addition to the areas of self-discovery they also host a wide variety of special events and shows that are open to the public. The rest of the year is no disappointment, as they have a full schedule of activities planned geared towards the whole family.
