Lights in the Night shine brighter We love downtown in the winter! To be honest, we love downtown all times of the year but the winter season here in downtown Kamloops definitely fills us up with wonder, joy and holiday spirit. All you have to do is look around, especially after the sun goes down. You find yourself in a world of twinkly tree lights, fantastic holiday window displays and if we are lucky, beautiful fluffy snow! Helping to make the holiday season a little bit brighter is the folks over at the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association or as they have become to be known, Downtown Kamloops. They are the people behind those twinkly tree lights and the ones that organize the best kick off to a holiday season any one neighbourhood could have. That celebration is the Lights in the Night Christmas Party and it never fails to impress. “The Lights in the Night Christmas Party is the official kick off to Christmas downtown,” explains Gay Pooler, general manager. “Your favourite merchants pull out all the stops, throwing holiday parties, open houses, having great promotions and ringing in the festive season.” The Lights in the Night Christmas Party is an event built for the whole family. There are kids crafts and activities along with the annual tree light up and carolling at St. Andrews on the Square, merchant parties, a Lights in the Night lantern walk, specials, promotions and the special In It To Win It live prizing game. In It To Win It has become a crowd favourite over the last few years and sees customers with cellular phones able to either scan a QR code at every party location or text a special phrase to win. Prizes are awarded every three minutes live on the street. There are more than 60 prizes awarded over

You can win each and every day of the 28 days. There are multiple ways to enter and you can enter as many times as you want.” Those ways to win include opting into their auto #dtkfabfinds alert system with either your mobile phone number or email address, shopping at any of the participating merchants – one entry per purchase, sharing their daily #dtkfabfinds on any of your social media platforms using the hashtag #dtkfabfinds, locating your own #dtkfabfind in one of the participating merchants, sharing it on any of your social media platforms using the hashtag #dtkfabfinds, or parking! Visitors who park on street and pay for their parking using Telepark are entered daily to win a $50, $20 or $10 Downtown Gift Certificate given away by the City of Kamloops. The Lights in the Night Christmas Party runs from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, November 27. You can get details and a full list of activities, prizing and fab finds at www.downtownkamloops. com. Recital on the Square

The Kamloops Museum and Archives is presenting a free lecture by Dr. Lloyd Bennett of Thompson Rivers University. This special presentation takes place on Thursday, November 27 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Museum, 207 Seymour Street. Canada has one of the greatest collections of First World War art, but the story of how the collection came to be is unknown. Join Dr. Lloyd Bennett as he tells the fascinating story of the Beaverbrook War Art collection. Dr. Bennett will also speak of an intriguing Kamloops connection and a controversial program to bring war art to Canadian school children. Please pre-register for this course at www.kamloops.ca/ezreg or by calling 250-828-3500 and quoting program number 231332.

Santa’s in speedos take over Victoria Street Excitement is ramping up for the second annual TRU Law Santa Swimsuit Run. TRU Law students are brushing off their Santa speedos and hitting the tanning beds in preparation for their chilly jaunt through downtown Kamloops. This year’s run promises to be even better than the last, having already doubled in participants and including some new recruits from the law schools faculty. So why are all these future lawyers braving freezing temperatures in just their speedos? The run was created to help raise funds for the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. The students felt that they wanted to get in touch with the community and help fundraise for a great local charity. Last year the run raised over two thousand dollars, donating it to the completion of a new hospital wing. This year the students are eager to beat last year’s amount, and are willing to brave

any weather the day might throw at them for the fantastic cause. Come rain, snow or the blizzard of the century, you can bet you’ll be seeing some scantily clad bodies jogging through downtown Kamloops, come November 22nd. So what can you do to help keep them warm? Donate, donate, donate! All

donations go to the RIH and can be made through the run’s website, www.kamloopssantarun.com. If you are not looking to donate, but would still like to contribute feel free to come on down and cheer these brave runners on. The run will be taking place November 22 starting at 2:00pm, down Victoria Street.

Choral Rhapsody returns this holiday Residents are invited to attend the 17th Annual Choral Rhapsody of Christmas at the Sagebrush Theatre on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00pm. The free community concert is sponsored by the City of Kamloops, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. This year eight local choirs, plus one choir from out of town, will be presenting a delightful selection of Christmas carols with sing-a-longs in between sets for audience participation. The choirs in attendance will be: Desert Sounds Harmony, Bell of Note, Kamloops Choristers, German Liederkreis Choir, Mostly Acappella, Silverbell Singers, The Happy Choristers, The Sage Sound Singers and Vivace Chorale. Although the event is free of charge, food and cash donations for the Kamloops Food Bank will be gratefully accepted. Book seats through Kamloops Box Office Live by phone at 250-374-5483, in-person at 1025 Lorne Street or online at kamloopslive.ca.

In 2014, YMCA Peace Week celebrates its 30th anniversary and invites people of all ages to reflect on peace, to talk, and to take action, individually and with others. From November 15 to 22, the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA, together with YMCAs across Canada, offers activities that help children, youth and adults explore peace from personal, local and global perspectives. Collectively, YMCAs in Canada ask people to: Build community. Act for peace. More than the absence of violence and conflict, peace is the ongoing work of building and maintaining conditions of fairness, inclusion, empathy, security, and respect for diversity. Peace building is core to the YMCA’s commitment to strengthening the foundation of healthy communities and part of the Kamloops Y’s year round programs. Peace Week activities include the Giving Tree, free yoga classes and a free swim. Bring new socks, mittens and scarves to decorate the Giving Tree at all Y locations. Help young people stay warm this winter. Free Yoga for Peace at the North Shore Y from 7:45 am to 8:45 am on November 18 and 20. At the Downtown Y from 12:10 pm to 12:50 pm on November 21. Free Ice Tower swim at the Downtown Y from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on November 21.

Jan at Kamloops Esthetics is happy to share her knowledge on her exclusive line of skin care products with you.

Every client walks away from Kamloops Esthetics feeling pampered and more confident because they are mentored in an approach that balances the scientific and emotional aspects of skin care. “Skin is an inside job,” remarks owner and certified esthetician Jan Wynnychuk. “Part of the care regime is to talk about the emotional side of skin conditions and aging as well as stress, hormones and diet. Trust is a big deal.” Jan smiles and jokes lightly, “I offer free advice on anything.” In all seriousness, it is obvious that Jan truly cares about people’s health. She bridged a background in healthcare and laser skin care services to begin her practice in 2008. She continues to work out of the same space today, located at 301-141 Victoria Street. Skin is composed of elastin and collagen to make it firm, stretch and bend. The collagen in your skin breaks down for a number of reasons including the aging process, sun exposure, smoking, irritants and free radicals, and it will not hold the same elastic qualities. Remedying and slowing these effects with a focus on natural and organic skin care regimes, Jan’s product line Bliss Organics is exclusive to Kamloops. The products are made in BC by a microbiologist so the benefits are backed by

molecular level science to penetrate, hydrate and regenerate without chemicals. “A lot of mainstream products are way too harsh. Sensitivity and damage to the skin are a result of using chemicals. The goal of these products is give the skin nourishment, to build immunity, regenerate and protect it from further damage, heal and create an environment where bacteria doesn’t thrive. I use biological ingredients not because it is fashionable, but because they are the best.” When speaking about natural acne treatments, Jan notes an important connection, “Skin is an organ. Anything you put on it goes to the blood stream. Adolescent acne occurs when the brain and reproductive organs are developing. “We don’t want to kill this bacteria because it has a job to do but instead create an environment where it doesn’t thrive.” Skin is a mirror to health, taking

care of your skin is a sign of taking care of yourself. Jan is apt in spinning positivity and success into many women’s sense of desperation about aging. “I really encourage people to embrace the changes and to remind them of what others see - their wisdom, their smile and the light in their eyes.” Kamloops Esthetics is all about “Successful Ageing” and the signature spa service is customized facials. You can also get a quick lift by having your eyebrows shaped. “It offers significant anti-aging results by visually lifting and framing the face,” says Jan. Kamloops Esthetics wants to shape the way your skin looks in the future. Services are offered from 9:30am to 6:00pm on weekdays and by appointment on the weekend. Book a private consultation with Jan by calling 250-828-0909 or email jan@kamloopsesthetics.com. Jody Tippett

As a female shopper exited a convenience store in New York, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police had apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, “Yes Officer...that’s her. A large two engine train was crossing the country. After they had gone some distance one of the engines broke down. “No problem,” the engineer thought, and carried on at half power. Farther on down the line, the other engine broke down, and the train came to a standstill. The engineer decided he should

inform the passengers about why the train had stopped, and made the following announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that both engines have failed, and we will be stuck here for some time. The good news is that you decided to take the train and not fly.”

The Kamloops Arts Council is presenting Howard Swaren’s Oils To Enjoy from December 2 to 20 in the Main Gallery with an Opening Reception on December 3 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Howard will be displaying a variety of works that he has created over the past two years. These oil paintings will feature landscapes, animals and flowers. Howard said this about this upcoming exhibition, “During these past forty years, I have had the opportunity to take lessons from three notable art teachers. Appreciating their varied style regarding the technique of working with oils, I have banked the ideas and have put this

“Two Ol’ Boys” by Howard Swaren.

into my own style. I have tried to create realism with my pieces. Having said this, you can see that I may have ventured away from what you see in my paintings and what was really the real thing. I have found that creating is a challenge that cannot be prescribed, it is in the heart.” Howard’s interest in painting with oils is not to be consistent

with the subjects. What has sold well for him in the past has been subjects such as fishing boats and horse scenes. As you will see with this show, a variety of subjects will be on display. The Kamloops Arts Council’s Main Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm and until 4:00pm on Saturday.

Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) The future you’ve been creating is finally here. You could spend more time in your personal game of preparation and reparation, or you could just begin living the life you deserve. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) A new you is about to bloom and people notice. Although still reclusive for another week, a stranger might tempt you out into adventure to remember. There’s room for optimism but stick to your budget. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Ease off the pace and have a look around. You might have moved to far too quickly and it’s time for others to catch up. A lover returns from the past. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re past is picking a fight and you’re doing your best to keep up. It doesn’t seem fair but you still have to keep going. Keep your eyes open because you’re going to meet someone who can help. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You’ve changed your philosophies and softened in the last couple of weeks. People notice and a new job opportunity presents itself. An office romance goes a little further. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Teaming up pays off and it feels great! Focus shifts towards intellectual and exotic pleasures, and travel. A shopping trip to Vancouver could be fun. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You were so hot recently, hearts would break just thinking of you. Now it’s time to settle down with your new friend and build that future you’re dreaming of. Legal news might surprise. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) It’s been a boring couple of weeks but that’s about to change! Love returns bringing a second chance at a new beginning. Remember recent lessons and appreciate the people in your life… while they’re there. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’re still frisky but the chores are piling up and your partner is feeling neglected. Take step to reign in your daily routine. Planning your day will reveal more time for love. LS Cigar1.4_BlackFriday2014.indd 1 Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Don’t roar too loudly but make your ideas known. Feelings of playfulness and a light hearted attitude return. Life continues its frantic pace and taking care of the kids fill your day. Continue to watch for accidents. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) After thinking about it for a couple of weeks, it’s now time to make a decision about your living arrangements. Your home is a natural extension of how you’d like to present yourself to the world. So, have a look inwards... then decorate! Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Usually the observer, you feel compelled to speak up. But what to say? Centering and calming thoughts will lessen distractions.
