Salute to the Sockeye Sockeye Salmon undertake an incredible journey every year to continue the cycle of life and maintain balance in the eco system. The spectacular Adams River Sockeye Salmon Run takes place every October. Every fourth year there is a huge run and the sight is something to see. 2014 is a dominant year and the sheer number of spawning fish in the river during this high season run is mindblowing. Bring your camera as it’s a spectacular sight witnessing this magnificent natural wonder. Every year the salmon swim back to their birthplace to spawn and then die. The salmon swim up the Fraser River, turn into the Thompson River, split into the South Thompson at Kamloops and then head into Little Shuswap Lake, Little River, Shuswap Lake and finally struggle to spawn in the gravel beds near the mouth of the Adams River. This amazing nature adventure is not to be missed. You will not be disappointed as this spectacle of seeing the salmon in their natural habitant is never less than uplifting and inspiring. The Adams Run Salmon Society host a celebration known as the “Salute to the Sockeye” until Sunday, October 26. Refreshments and food vendors are available at the site along with unique souvenir items. You can see the salmon swimming upstream jumping over falls. In some areas the river and creek bottoms are not visible as the fish cover them completely. By the time they arrive they have lost their silver sheen and turned almost scarlet so the river is sometimes red its full depth and breadth. The salmon are so thick that you could al-
most walk across them. Easy walking trails and educational displays explaining the run make it a great family experience, regardless of your age. Various artisan’s work is available to purchase in the gift store including former Westsyde resident Clarence Mills, member of the Haida Eagle Clan
tional Haida style. Shaun McArdle, owner of the Fan Cave, located at 1012 Victoria Street, recently hosted an event for Clarence to personally sign his prints for local collectors. The Fan Cave is Kamloops’ exclusive agent for Clarence’s work and offers a vast selection of creative framing options to beautifully compliment the work. Equally inspired by the incredible display by Mother Nature, local resident Dianne Noble wrote a poem entitled “The Journey A Sockeye’s Story” and paired it with photos. Copies of her work will also be available at the gift shop for visitors. Dianne explained the poem came about after a trip to Adam’s River with her daughter’s elementary class during the last peak run. She describes, “The water is a means of life for the fish and having traveled full circle is also a means of struggle, death and new existence.” Westsyde resident of yesteryear, Clarence When the river runs red one does quiMills, member of the Eagle Clan in Skidigate, etly ponder existence while reflecting BC, returned to Kamloops to celebrate the on a species that is born an orphan and spawning wild Sockeye Salmon.
