Bringing homeless “Out of the Cold” The hazards of homelessness are especially rife with danger during the cold winter months: frostbite, exposure, illness, hypothermia, depression and loneliness. Out of the Cold, a homeless shelter based out of the St. Paul’s Cathedral, has 28 beds available during the cold winter months. As of November 2, the shelter will be open on Sundays and Wednesdays. The organization provides a hot meal, a change of clothes, including fresh socks and new underwear— a good sleep and breakfast in the morning. Last year, the shelter was receiving around 60 people per night for the hot meal. Allowing these individuals an opportunity to rest, wash, sleep and bundle up against the elements with dignity. Gale Ovington, event organizer, says “It’s not helping out—it’s helping up.” The “Out of the Cold” Benefit Concert is set for Friday, October 21 at 7:00 pm. The event offers a whole host of musical guests and entertainment for the evening. The Pokotillo Ukrainian Dancers, under the direction of instructor Jeanne Olineck, includes three different age ranges from children to adults. Wearing traditional costumes, the dancers will perform numbers to traditional Ukrainian songs. Rob Gretsinger will be improvising with his unique gongs and percussion instruments. Rachel Casponi, soprano, will sing Mozart’s Alleluia and an all time fall favourite - Autumn Leaves. Carmen Ranta will perform Oblivion on alto saxophone. Norris Berg, director of the Thompson Valley Orchestra, and musicians will present the “Maple Leaf Rag”. There will be organ and piano soloists and chamber music ensembles. Gale is not only an organizer, the retired piano teacher and professional pipe organist is also one of the performers! She and
