Ghost Train departs with departed Climb aboard the Ghost Train for a spooky Halloween adventure with ghoulish characters and so much fun it’s frightening! According to legend, on a dark Halloween night in 1915, a train carrying 44 passengers and crew left Kamloops Junction destined for the town of Blue River.

It was a frightful night, the wind howled and dense fog appeared at Wolfenden. The train steamed into the fog, but never came back out!

During restoration and ever since locomotive No. 2141 has been back and running; there have been some strange happenings going on around Halloween time that remain unexplained. Could it be the spirits of the missing passengers?

If you dare to find out, take a ride on the Ghost Train! Have the spirits come back to finish their fateful journey?

Living passengers can board the train for an hour-long journey on the Ghost Train and meet some of the lost and restless souls from days gone by as they tell their stories. You never know what may be waiting around the next bend as the Ghost Train

Kamloops Heritage Railway (KHR) has resurrected the beautifully restored 1912 steam locomotive, No. 2141 for a greatly anticipated annual Halloween tradition, the KHR Ghost Train 2015. The engine leaves the 1927 historic CN Railway Station at 6-510 Lorne Street at 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24 and the following Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 29, 30 and 31. Also on Friday, October 30, KHR is hosting David’s Tea Night, sponsored by David’s Tea. KHR will host a special tour on Saturday, October 31 at 4:00 pm especially for little trick-or-treaters; this is the only one of the Ghost Train tours suitable for young children. “We are really excited about the Children’s Ghost Train adventure, a new feature this year,” explains Rosanne Nelson, rail tour operations manager for the KHR. “For this ride, there won’t be any spooky stuff. Just lots of friendly

characters and lively music for children and families to enjoy.”

Blazers introduce new jerseys

On Thursday, September 24, teammates (L-R) Collin Shirley, Matt Needham and Connor Ingram donned the new home jerseys as the Kamloops Blazers introduced the new set of home and away jerseys for the upcoming season. The Blazers wore the blue jerseys in their home opener against the Kelowna Rockets at the Sandman Centre. The white jerseys will be worn for road games in the first half of the season and for home games after the Christmas break.

Streak for Cancer event raises funds and awareness Throughout the month of October salons across BC will be participating in “Streak for Cancer,” a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society that involves putting pink streaks in their clients’ hair.

For a $10 minimum donation clients at participating salons can get a pink hair streak to show their support for women facing breast cancer, a disease that affects over 3,000 British Columbian women every year.

“This is a fun, simple way for people to show their support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” says Jennifer Harbaruk, Revenue Development coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society. “We’ve definitely come a long way. In 1986, breast cancer patients had a 53 per cent chance of survival. Thanks to significant investment in breast cancer research the survival rate is now 88 per cent − that’s a 35 per cent increase in only 26 years. Wouldn’t it be amazing if that survival rate was 100 per cent?”

One of the ways the Canadian Cancer Society is working to increase the cancer survival rates for all cancers, including breast cancer, is by educating the public on cancer prevention. There are many simple lifestyle changes that women can make to help reduce their breast cancer risks, including booking regular mammograms and choosing to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

“When breast cancer is caught early, the

chances of successful treatment are better,” says Jennifer Harbaruk “and regular mammograms are the most reliable early detection tool. Another way to prevent breast cancer is to reduce your risks by not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight and making sure you eat well and stay active.”

Piece of Mind is peace of mind Piece of Mind is a national art exhibition that promotes psychological health, works to break the stigma surrounding psychological health and aims to inspire the community to live psychologically healthy lives.

For the first time, the BC Psychological Association will be partnering with the Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) to hold a Piece of Mind exhibition specific to the Kamloops area. The aim of the exhibition will be to celebrate healthy coping skills and inspire members of the Kamloops community, through artistic expression, to live psychologically healthy lifestyles.

All members of the community (from professional to beginner) were invited to submit

2D artwork that showcases their “Peace of Mind” and to answer the question “what does psychological health mean to you?” with the hopes of facilitating a platform that will transform these pieces of art into pieces of individual inspiration and motivation.

Piece of Mind will be in the KAC Main Gallery from October 7 to November 13. Kamloops Symphony brings disco back Kamloops Symphony is teaming up with Jeans ‘n Classics once again, this time performing the iconic songs of ABBA. Dancing Queen – The Music of ABBA will be at Sagebrush Theatre October 23 and 24.

Lead vocalists Katalin Kiss, Andrea Koziol, Stephanie Martin and Lis Soderberg, along with the Jeans ‘n Classics band will perform songs like Take a Chance on Me, Waterloo, Fernando and Money, Money, Money.

This performance was chosen by audience members at last year’s sold-out performances of The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper.

Jeans ‘n Classics has been combining rock with symphonies for almost 20 years. The London, Ontario based orchestra rock act’s arrangements make

for a great live show experience. Their artists bring their original voices, while accurately interpreting the music of world-class, legendary rock groups.

ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. The Swedish group was formed in 1972 and became one of the most commercially successful popular music groups, with hits that topped the charts worldwide from 1975 to 1982.

The group’s 1974 entry, Waterloo, won the Eurovision Song Contest and was later chosen as the best song in the history of the competition at the contest’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Sports Council endorses yes vote The Kamloops Sports Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote self-sustaining sport groups through organizational development, administrative support and event hosting. The Sports Council supports over 60 local member sport organizations in a variety of ways and also plays an integral role in the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) program by providing management support to major sports and community events.

The arts and cultural community has had a long history of being part of major Kamloops sporting events and many times comes together with community events.

The sports community has first-hand knowledge of what enhanced facilities can do. The 2003 TCC referendum produced new facilities that allowed sports organizations to flourish by striving for and achieving, major sporting events. The increase in sport tourism as a result of the TCC expansion is measurable and significant, as are the new levels of hosting capacity Kamloops has achieved. We have grown both in the brick and mortar facilities and the human experience and capacity.

The TCC referendum was a response to pent-up demand for fields and playing surfaces driven by a vibrant sports community. The result was a much higher level of sustainable hosting capacity, which is being fully taken advantage of. It took Kamloops beyond being a provincial player into the realm of being a serious contender for prestigious national and international level events. It’s now the arts and culture community’s turn.

We see many parallels between the TCC referendum and the new Performing Arts Centre. The arts community has pent-up demand that needs to be addressed if they wish to grow and thrive. The Performing Arts Centre will address existing need and allow for growth of existing programs. The potential of the new facility to extend the reach and capacity of our arts and culture community is exciting and real and we look forward to even higher levels of engagement between sports and cultural events.

The Kamloops Sports Council encourages all member organizations and individuals to support the Performing Arts Centre referendum.

Learn about Secwepemc Ethnobotany The Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library System is hosting an Introduction to Secwepemc Ethnobotany led by Carryl Armstrong of the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 pm at the Kamloops Library. Armstrong studied archaeology at Simon Fraser University and has worked as both archivist and archaeologist for T’Kemlups te Secwepemc and Neskonlith Indian Band.

Library users can join global eBook club The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Library System is taking part in a virtual, global eBook club, Overdrive’s Big Library Read program, which features two eBooks.

Library cardholders will be able to borrow and read The Door in the Hedge by Robin McKinley and In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters until Wednesday, October 21, by visiting http://bcpl.lib.overdrive.com.

“This is a great opportunity for us to participate in an eBook club that has a global scale,” said Marc Saunders, TNRD director of libraries.

Black Dog String Quartet returns The Black Dog String Quartet will perform the first in the New Gold Chamber Music Series on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 pm in the TRU Alumni Theatre.

They will perform two iconic string quartet works, as well as a world premiere by BC composer Jason Nett and an exciting arrangement of Piazzolla’s famous Libertango.

The Black Dog String Quartet is one of Vancouver’s hottest quartets.

Formed in 2007, this talented quartet is made up of Elyse Jacobson, Molly MacKinnon, John Kastelic and Doug Gorkoff. All four musicians are members of the Kamloops Symphony.

Black Dog String Quartet has appeared on recordings with artists such as 54-40, Marianas Trench and Bleeding Through. They are considered one of Vancouver’s most unique and versatile ensembles, performing for various public and private events, including classical chamber concerts and weddings, as well as on film and television scores.
