Horror film event back and bigger than ever October is the best time of year for all things spooky, scary and macabre. It is the one month of the year when horror filmmakers shoot for box office releases, coinciding with Halloween and celebrating all things frightening, gothic and gory. Kamloops has become a Mecca for horror buffs as festival director and horror movie producer, Darryl John has returned for another year to promote the Fake Flesh Film Festival; a showcase of 20 minute original film shorts created by amateur filmmakers exclusively from the horror genre. The three day horror film festival will run from October 29 to 31 and with over 1500 submissions this year, there will be hours of over the top horror films to see. All music used has been originally scored for each movie or the filmmaker has obtained license to be in it. Horror movies are often made by the music and sounds, so expect creativity as these films showcase local musicians, bands and DJs. With a chance to have your horror film shown in a theatre in Banff, AB and online video link sharing, this is a great film company brand recognition opportunity as well. Darryl John has chosen to showcase local talent and wants the filmmakers from the Kamloops area to get the exposure

they deserve. “I want to see everyone making a movie,” he said. “I also want to mention that artwork for the festival is by Phil Ryan.” Some of the categories that submissions are being judged on are for best short film and fulllength movie, best special effects, best actor/ actress and director, best death scene, best soundtrack and the fan favourite. Awards will be announced on the final day of the festival with cash prizes awarded to the winners. Some award categories also have co-sponsors providing additional prizes and one award or prize will be given to the individual designated as submitting the winning feature. A panel of film industry professionals will select winners and all films go through a screening process and are reviewed by at least two members of the selection committee. Starting at 7:30 pm at Cactus Jack’s Night Club located at 130 5th Avenue, the short horror film competition begins with comedian Dan Jakes introducing the films and providing his hilarious brand of humour to emcee the event. There are no bad seats in the house, as the horror films will be projected onto three large screens and nine 50-inch televisions for your viewing pleasure. Local firefighter receives Paul Harris Community Award The Rotary Club of Kamloops West awarded David Sakaki, firefighter with Kamloops Fire and Rescue, with the prestigious Paul Harris Community Award on Thursday, October 8. This is an award that recognizes exceptional service in our community and the global community. David and the Kamloops Fire Fighters Charitable Society started Operation Nicaragua in 2009. This initiative saw the shipping of fire trucks and shipping containers to Nicaragua, containers that held much needed equipment like wheelchairs, hospital beds, clothing and many other items that have been needed. They have sent over 12 fire trucks and 12 containers over the course of the initiative. David has also personally provided fire education and training to the local people of Nicaragua during his many yearly visits to Nicaragua. David also has provided a variety of other volunteer services in other countries over the past ten years, including the Philippines in 2009 to help with the typhoon disaster. Most recently, this past spring David traveled to Nepal following the earthquake disaster, just a few short days after returning from Nicaragua. He assisted in setting up water stations and helping the displaced with another volunteer organization that he is with, called Global Medic, spending a total of two weeks in Nepal to lend assistance.
Locally, David has been instrumental in several different initiatives, including the Kamloops Fire and Rescues’ January 2012 campaign to deliver sleeping bags and blankets to the homeless. They were able to deliver over 100 blankets and sleeping bags
over the course of two nights. David is the values of Rotary personified and he has been to the Rotary Club of Kamloops West on several occasions to speak about the different work that he is doing in the community and around the world.

How would you survive a zombie apocolypse?
10th Annual Zombie Walk For nine years, Bonnie McLean has organized the Kamloops Zombie Walk and unleashed her brain hungry reanimated fiends on the downtown core in October. She has planned something special to celebrate the 10th Annual Zombie Walk and this year’s celebration will be bigger and better than ever! Last year saw close to 100 people taking part in the Walk, each with a unique look and zombie persona. As the zombies converged on Victoria Street, Michael Jackson’s Thriller began to play from all directions and the zombies broke into the dance choreog-
raphy from the original video. Bonnie is offering one more session for zombie dancers to learn the moves on Thursday, October 29 at 5:30 pm at the bandshell in Riverside Park, if you would like to learn the signature moves and participate. The Zombie Walk will start Saturday, October 31 at 2:00 pm beside the bandshell in Riverside Park. There will be an after party at Red Collar Brewing Company located at 355 Lansdowne Street starting at 3:00 pm with entertainment and prizes. In addition to the traditional Thriller dance, expect new choreography for the 10th Annual Zom-
bie Walk this year for the after party! If zombie attire is not for you, make sure you come out and watch the freaks dance their way into hearts, brains and any other body parts they can get their gnarled fingers on as the reanimated mob descends. “And who so ever shall be found without the soul for getting down must stand and face the hounds of hell and rot inside a corpse’s shell,” as Michael Jackson’s signature song tells, so come out and have a bloody good time. Besides, what zombie flash mob would be complete without stopping for drinks and appetizers in full costume afterwards?

Western Canada Theatre (WCT), in partnership with Urban Ink and Raven Theatre, presents a workshop production of the new musical Children Of God, by Corey Payette, on October 24, 26 and 28 at 7:30 pm at the Pavilion Theatre located at 1025 Lorne Street. This is a musical about an Oji-Cree family whose children were sent to residential school. It examines how our past directly relates to our future and celebrates Indigenous peoples’ neverending cultural spirit, which blends the traditional and the contemporary. Playwright and Urban Ink artistic
director Corey Payette said, “It is essential to honour residential school survivors by sharing their history in order to make sure this never happens again.” This is the third presentation of the third annual High-Wire Festival. This year WCT present three new plays-in-development, all featuring First Nations voices. At the readings and workshops, your feedback is welcomed about what excites you about the projects, to help the playwrights as they shape the scripts further. For more information, contact Suzan Goguen at suzan@wctlive.ca 250-3723216 Ext. 530.
WCT recognition Letter to the Editor; Western Canada Theatre (WCT) graciously paid tribute to me at the opening 40th Anniversary season and they mentioned three of my Kamloops alumni; Brent Carver, Keith Dinicol and Gabrielle Rose. I would be remiss not to note several others. Blain Fairman, Kamloops television personality, played many roles for me, while I was doing a summer stock in Vancouver and he was starring as Billy Liar. He was cast in a film called The Trap and after the London premiere, he decided to stay in the UK. He has, over the years performed in approximately 300 BBC Radio broadcasts as actor,
writer and storyteller. Now in his early 70’s, Blain is still a prominent actor. Rick Fox was in Grade 11 and a talented musician when he musically directed our production of Godspell in Kamloops and on a BC tour. He currently lives in New York, where he was musical director for the revivals of Jesus Christ Superstar and West Side Story on Broadway. Ian Weir, a highly intelligent student, wrote a one-act play in Grade 11 and another in Grade 12; I directed both for festivals. Ian, is a successful playwright and television writer and producer. The orthopedic surgeon I work for was moving to a new office, and his staff was helping transport many of the items. I sat the display skeleton in the front of my car, his bony arm across the back of my seat. I hadn’t considered the drive across town. At one traffic light, the stares of the people in the car beside me became obvious, and I looked across and explained, “I’m delivering him to my doctor’s office.” The other driver leaned out of his window. “I hate to tell you, lady,” he said, “but I think it’s too late!”
A Halloween fairy tale
Surprise visit The owner of a manufacturing firm decided to make a surprise tour of the factory. Walking through the warehouse he noticed a young man lazily leaning against a packing crate. The factory owner angrily said, “Just how much are you being paid?” The young man replied, “A hundred dollars a week.” The owner pulled out his wallet, peeled off five $20 bills and shouted at the young man: “Here
is a week’s pay – now get out and don’t come back!” Without a word, the young man stuffed the money into his pocket and left. The warehouse manager, standing nearby, stared in amazement. “Tell me,” the boss asked him, “How long has that guy worked for us?” “He didn’t work here,” replied the warehouse manager. “He was a part-time Fed-Ex guy delivering a package.”
Throwing a stone
A football hooligan appeared in court one day charged with disorderly conduct and assault. The arresting officer stated that the accused had thrown something into the river. Judge: “What exactly did the accused throw?” Officer: “Stones, sir.” Judge: “Well, that’s hardly an offense is it?” Officer: It was in this case, sir. Stones was the referee.”
There lived a man who was very unhappy because he was deeply in love with a girl who didn’t know he was alive. In desperation, he visited a coven of witches who lived nearby and presented his case before them. Touched by his tale of woe, and impressed with the young man’s appearance, manner, and bearing, they decided to help him. They worked t h e i r magic and eventually presented the young man with several small objects that looked like capsules. “Bury these under the window of your beloved under a full moon and she will love you,” they instructed. Doubtful, the young man resolved nevertheless to do as the witches instructed. On the very next full moon, he stealthily made his way over to his beloved’s house and carefully buried the capsules in
the rich loam beneath her window. Nothing happened right away, but, trusting the wisdom of the old ladies, he went home to see what the next day would bring. The next morning, he walked hopefully over to the girl’s house and rang her doorbell. She opened the door, saw it was him, and grabbed him. She hugged him, kissed him, and invited him in for lunch. Their courtship was short but passionate, within a month and they were happily married. Late one night after they had been married, the young man visited the coven again. “I just want to thank you ladies for your help. My life is everything I could have desired.” “No problem, dearie,” said one of the old ladies. “After all, nothing says lovin’ like something from the coven, and pills buried says it best.”

Flu season is here – protect yourself Interior Health is gearing up to help protect children, pregnant women, seniors, 7th people with Annual chronic illnesses and others who are most at risk from influenza and its complications. “Influenza reduces the body’s ability to fight illnesses and infections and it can also increase a person’s risk for developing other serious conditions, including viral or bacterial pneumonia,” said Dr. Kamran Golmohammadi, medical health officer. “Getting a flu shot and washing your hands frequently are the two most effective ways to protect yourself and others from influenza and its complications.” The flu shot provides protection from the influenza virus strains expected to be circulating this season based on trends worldwide.
This year’s flu shot offers protection against two influenza A viruses (an H1N1 and an H3N2 virus) and one influenza B virus. For those under 18, the preferred vaccine also protects against an additional B influenza virus. The flu shot is free for those at risk of complications from influenza and those in contact with people at risk. Interior Health will hold public clinics the week of October 29. Many doctor’s offices, pharmacies and walk-in clinics are also providing flu shots. Those who are not eligible for the free vaccine will be required to pay a fee. To find a flu shot clinic or provider near you, call the flu information line at 250-851-7359 or visit the Influenza Clinic Locator at immunizebc.ca/.

DOWNTOWN echo
echo stargazer Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You may be front and centre but as you well know, that’s not always a good thing. Your intuition is very strong so trust your instincts but don’t jump to conclusions. An old friend visits your dreams with a message. Have faith and believe in love. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Discipline and patience are similar but not the same and you’ll need both to complete this leg of your journey. There are conflicts when you head outside and behind the scene affairs continue but there’s a very bright light behind these clouds. Rely on the kindness of strangers. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Recent success has filled you with the realization that you can do it but getting serious doesn’t have to mean shutting yourself away. Success at work continues to guide your actions and if you can regain your playful outlook then love will follow as well. Your heart wants to say hello. Go ahead and let it. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Your heart is focused on money again but there’s a new philosophical outlook guiding your actions. You’d like to break free from the constraints that you have held you down and you’re being feisty about it. Look to the horizon for love. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Travel and foreign pursuits still occupy your mind. You’re an outside of the box thinker to begin with but this astro-cycle you’re really stretching your personal philosophies and spiritual beliefs. Apply some of your new teachings to your joint finances and watch your partnerships grow. Results are as expected. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You continue to be lucky in love but your friends might be casting disapproving glances. They might have a point in their disapproval or they might just be nitpicking. It’s up to you to decide if it’s the real deal and stroll hand in hand into your happily forever after or just wish well for the happy memories. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Competitive urges are stimulated but another busy week finds you working overtime to help others finish their chores as well. Thoughts continue to drift towards your dearest and all of the fun you should be having if you could just find the time for love. Physical activities lead to a romantic weekend. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Children and a playful outlook are front and centre. It’s a creative time where the seeds for both love and new business can be planted. Some of you will hear news of new additions to the family. When working on a new project don’t forget the obvious. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Fights at home continue but if you win, it’ll be big. After the dust has settled, there will be great news so don’t burn that bridge. Say your piece and move on with your plan. Missed communications in love deserves a second chance. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’ve been thinking about home and family but your actions are on new business. There’s both luck and love waiting as you move into a new routine but bumps along the way have you questioning your choices. Have faith and keep going. Today’s rain will bring a bigger rainbow than expected. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’re super chatty this week with a personal agenda and a financial plan to force through. People are listening to your new money ideas but you’re still pushing a little too hard. Don’t back off because luck is blessing your path but adjust your choice of words. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You finally know where you’d like to be and you have the confidence to get there. If you’re in love then the next step is only a voiced question away. Money will be on its way in a couple of weeks so there’s no reason to worry. Dress your best and go for it. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
