Don’t just stand there. Walk-Pledge-Donate. Kira Gosselin is the The Travelling Safer Sex Lady for ASK Wellness Centre in Kamloops. When she first took on the role of an ASK Health Navigator more than a year ago, she didn’t really know how it would affect her spirit or heart. Vulnerable clients with chronic health care issues such as HIV or cancer welcome Kira into their very private and sometimes painful life experiences.
She has witnessed miracles in people’s lives and is once again spearheading the Kamloops Scotia Bank AIDS Walk For Life, Saturday, September 22 at Stuart Wood School/ Downtown Farmers Market. The walk will be followed up with tunes spun by DJ Kudos as well as a free BBQ by Cookie Reimer. “The AIDS Walk dollars all
stay right here in Kamloops.” Kira informs. “They are issued out in crisis grants by the Health Navigation Team at ASK Wellness. These dollars are our only funding in helping individuals and families who have been affected by this aggressive virus. The crisis grants are used to keep hydro or heat running, to put food in cupboards, to
pay for child care when a family member is in hospital, to assist with the cost of food when seeing a specialist in Vancouver and much more.” At 9:30 am registration for the walk begins, followed by speakers and a Zumba warm up. The walk through downtown starts at 11:30 am. Supporters can participate in the walk, sponsor a walker and bid on awesome items at the silent auction. CBC to launch Daybreak Kamloops this October Kamloops residents will soon be waking up to a familiar voice and a new morning show this Fall as CBC today announced Shelley Joyce as the new host of Daybreak Kamloops. The CBC Bureau is under construction at 218 Victoria Street in Kamloops. It will be home to the new morning show and digital service dedicated to local news, traffic and weather for residents of Kamloops and the sur-
rounding areas. Shelley has hosted radio programs in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna and written for The Winnipeg Sun, Today’s Parent and the Vancouver Province. She has been part of the CBC Kelowna team for the last six years and her stories have also been heard on CBC national radio programs The Current and The Story from Here.
high art (L-R) Yuvi Naicker, Ashlee Speer, Alley Barton, Caitlin Goulet, Brandon Mills and Caitlin Stanley were just a few of the performers on hand at the Western Canada Theatre (WCT) 2012/2013 Season Launch on September 12 at the Farmers’ Market on Victoria Street. The elaborate performance took place on the fire escapes and parking lot of The Plaza Hotel that featured a sneak peek at some of the upcoming plays.
“We have been looking forward to this new addition to the CBC service in British Columbia,” says Johnny Michel, managing director of British Columbia. “The show will reach more than 100,000 people in the area and with Shelley’s tenure in broadcasting and remarkable style of story-telling, we will hear great things from Daybreak Kamloops.” This rounds out CBC’s commitment to being rooted in the region as Kamloops residents have already embraced CBC’s afternoon show Radio West which broadcasts from CBC Kelowna and covers the Okanagan. “I would like to welcome the new CBC bureau to Kamloops,” said Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops Thompson Cariboo. “This new bureau will not only bring expanded services to our local residents but further our community’s profile on the national stage.” “Canadians have long told us they want local services,” says, Kirstine Stewart, executive vice-president, CBC English Services. “We made a commitment in our strategic plan to include the city of Kamloops and although it isn’t the extent at which we had planned prior to our cuts, we’re proud of what our team has been able to do for the residents in the area.” The new Bureau is part of CBC’s 5-year strategic plan, “Everyone, Every Way”. The plan, which was released February 2011, calls for a number of strategic priorities including expansion of service in Kamloops. For more information go to cbc.radio-canada.ca/strategy2015/ Daybreak Kamloops will begin broadcasting on October 9 at 6:00am on CBC Radio One on 94.1 FM in Kamloops. For more information on CBC in Kamloops, visit cbc.ca/kamloops.
Engaging communities to end violence against women and girls On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister for Status of Women, Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, announced the launch of a Call for Proposals for projects that will prevent and reduce violence against women and girls in Canada. “Our government is taking concrete steps in the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls by helping communities address this important issue,” said Minister Ambrose. “By inviting proposals for projects that address violence against women and girls, we are working together to create safe communities for all.” The Government of Canada will accept funding applications for the call for proposals in four thematic areas: Preventing and reducing violence against women and girls in high-risk neighbourhoods; Engaging men and boys in ending violence against women and girls; Preventing and reducing violence against women and girls in the name of “honour”; and Preventing and reducing the trafficking of women and girls through com-
munity planning “I encourage all interested organizations in Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo to apply and help make a difference for girls and
women who face various forms of violence,” concluded McLeod. For more information on criteria and deadlines please visit women.gc.ca.
Walk raises funds for prevention, education – continued from page 1 fighting alongside and helping those suffering with the illness to climb an insurmountable mountain. Kira reminds, “The face of HIV/AIDS has changed over the years and it does not discriminate. Anyone of any age, gender or sexual orientation could contract it if they do not practice safe sex or harm reduction.” With ASK Wellness’ assistance, many who were once standing alone now have a team helping them. Kira travels to Vancouver with clients to St. Paul’s BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. The centre has a floor dedicated to the treatment of individuals who are HIV/AIDS positive. “Although there are murmurs of cure, that day is nowhere close and who is to say what it will cost when available. Treatment for HIV/AIDS is very successful for most that can adhere to the treatment, which is every day for the rest of their lives. Prevention, education and harm reduction are still our best tools in combating new cases of HIV/AIDS,” says Kira. “Blessings, gratitude, joy and new beginnings are the things we often take for granted until we become aware they might be lost. My clients takes none of these things for granted now… and neither do I. Thank you to Kamloops for the support thus far and we hope to see as many of you as possible September 22!” To sponsor a walker go to aidswalkforlife.ca/Kamloops. Feed the Valley sculpture raffle Valley First member Cory Fuhr’s steel sculptures have been gaining notoriety for over a decade, but now he’s putting his artistic skills to work to help the hungry. The highly acclaimed sculptor has generously donated a piece of his captivating art collection to raffle off with all proceeds going to Valley First’s signature cause, Feed the Valley. The four-foot metalwork piece, independently appraised at more than $8,000, is currently on display on Valley First’s Kamloops branch at 180 Seymour Street. Fuhr, a regular personal contributor to Feed the Valley, believes his artwork donation will help the unique hungerfighting program reach even more people. Fuhr’s donation will provide a tremendous boost to the food bank. “Over the last few years, more and more people have become reliant on food banks,” says Fuhr. “Feed the Valley really sets Valley First apart; it’s also a terrific cause that I whole-heartedly support. In addition to making personal monetary donations, I thought I could help make a bigger impact by donating a piece of my work. People have got to eat. And, Valley First’s commitment to need really demonstrates a commitment to people over profit. I’m proud to be part of that.” Valley First will also be offering a sec-

All proceeds will go to Feed the Valley and donated to the food bank in Kamloops. The prize draw will take place on October 2 at 11:00am. Winners will be notified by telephone.
City public works position opening up With the upcoming retirement of Len Hrycan, Director of Community and Corporate Affairs, Director of Public Works and Sustainability David Duckworth will be assuming his role. In addition, the Information Technology Division (IT), which is currently in the Finance Department, will be moved under his direction. The restructured department will be renamed Corporate Services and Community Safety. Finance Director Sally Edwards will remain as the head of the Finance Department. “This move allows for the finance department to focus solely on finance, in turn allowing the City to become more accountable and more efficient in its purchasing as well as capital expenditures,” said CAO David Trawin. “With David’s skill set, he is a good fit for the position. Additionally, he is well versed in IT, so moving IT under his directorship makes sense.” The transition will take place over the next two months, although Duckworth assumes his new role on October 8. The Director of Public Works and Sustainability position will be posted both internally and externally in the coming weeks.

Family History Society celebrates 30th Anniversary A group of strangers, lured by advertising throughout the community, met for the first time in the Kamloops Library on September 8, 1982. On that evening their shared interest in genealogy and family history led them to form a Society which would encourage and assist people in the search for their ancestors. They held their first official meeting September 22, 1982. From its early days, the Society has organized many seminars and raised money to purchase books, microfilms, microfiche and other research materials that are available to assist people in their research. The indexes to the BC Vital Statistics have been purchased and
regularly updated by the Society and these are available for anyone to search at the Kamloops Branch of TNRD Library System. The group has taken on many projects such as the recording of many local cemeteries, the indexing of the Kamloops Funeral
Home records and, this year, photos of the Pleasant Street Cemetery were completed for the Can Gen Web Cemetery project. A number of books, as well as copies of the Society journal “Family Footsteps”, have been compiled and pub-
lished and all are available for sale. Since 1985 the Journal has reached all corners of the globe and contains a variety of articles each time on such things as local history, research techniques and stories about member’s ancestors. This year the group celebrates its 30th Anniversary and a special social evening is planned for September 27, 7pm at the Heritage House downtown. Anyone who has been a member at any time in the past is welcome to attend the meeting and renew old acquaintances. For more information, details or membership information see the Society website at www. kfhs.org.

It was great seeing the number of cyclists of all ages riding their bikes to work, no matter the weather. It almost made me want to “unretire” just so I could join in! Instead I was happy to do what I could to help out,
and it’s nice to know the Ambassador program is being appreciated,” commented Ambassador Murray Dennis. Interested applicants should fill out an application form at www.kamloops.ca/volunteer and click on the Tournament Capital Ambassador tab on the left, or call Alex de Chantal at 250-828-3828. A thoughtful last wish This guy was walking along the beach in Malibu when he came across this salt-encrusted piece of metal. He worked for an hour or so to remove the salt. Lo and behold it was a very old oil lamp. The guy started to buff it to remove the verdigris when “poof” a genie appeared. This genie, like all genies, was so happy to be freed of the lamp that he granted the guy three wishes. “I wish to be a dollar richer than Bill Gates,” says the guy. The genie wasn’t sure who Bill Gates was until the guy told him to check Forbes magazine. When the genie called up Forbes from inside the lamp he learned that Bill Gates was indeed the richest man in the world. “Guy,” the genie said, “You will forever be a dollar richer than Bill Gates. What’s your second 2/6/12 wish.”11:13:27 AM “Genie, I want the most expensive Porsche made: Fire engine red, on board GPS and the finest audio system ever installed in an automobile.” “That’s easy, Guy,” says the genie. He waves his hand and the best car anybody had ever seen pops out of the lamp. The genie then asks the guy for his third wish. The guy mulls the problem over and over. A girl? nah, with billions
and billions of dollars he certainly had become a chick magnet. World peace? Only wackos want that. The guy couldn’t think of what he wanted to use his final wish for. “Genie,” the guy said, “I can’t think of anything now. May I save the third wish for later.” “Gee, this is most unusual. But you hold the hammer, I can’t escape from this lamp until you make a third wish. Call me when you’re ready,” and whoosh the genie disappears into the lamp. The guy carefully picks up the now-ever-so-valuable lamp and places it in the trunk of the fire engine red Porsche. He turns the radio on to balance the sounds and makes all the other adjustments needed to get his great audio system customized to his ears. After that, he pulled off the beach and headed south along the Pacific Coast Highway. Soon he was up to 60, then 70, then 80. The Porsche handled perfectly. The guy was so happy that he began to sing along with the familiar commercial on the radio. “Oh, I wish I was an OscarMayer Wiener...

Local pencil artist Allen Dale Redfern, an associate of the Federation of Canadian Artists, will be presenting his first solo art show at the Old Kamloops Courthouse, At the corner of Seymour St W. and First Avenue. The show is entitled, Welcome to My World, is being presented by the Kamloops Arts Council and will be displayed in the Main Gallery September 27 to October 27. Allen has always believed that ‘Black on White’ graphite art, some dating back to the Stone Age, crosses all cultures and racial boundaries, connects people to their roots and creates harmony. As there are many shades of black and white, he aims to explore these possibilities. With his self-taught style of ‘Super-Magic’ Realism’ he endeavours to create his own art form. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, September 28 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Regular Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday 10:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
