Somebody call 911! The city is burning up! Yes, it is that time of year again. It’s the time when the women (and a few men) of Kamloops flock in groups with one burning desire: To pick up the new Kamloops Firefighters Calendar! The anticipation is over and the 2013 gem can now be in your hot little hands by the end of the day. This is year number three for the charity and it has proven itself to be one of Kamloops most popular fundraisers. This year’s recipients are the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation Fund and a charity that is very close to the firefighters hearts, the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund. This incredible, province wide charity helps the victims of fire and their families with support and life enriching services. Local firefighter, Ryan Cail is a long time volunteer of the Burn Fund. “More than 3800 professional firefighters dedicate and donate their time and skills to support burn survivors and create public awareness on fire prevention.” Says Ryan. What is most impressive about this charity is the fact that not a single position is paid. It is 100 percent volunteer based. Last year, the 2012 calendar raised $40,000 that was split equally between the two charities. This year,

Mike Haines, Tyler Smid, Ryan Cail, Shawn Davidson and Clayton Smith are some of the heroic volunteer firefighters who performed the extra brave act of posing in partial uniform for the 2013 Kamloops Firefighters calendar.

the Kamloops Firefighter’s have printed 2500 calendars. If they sell out, like they usually do, they will raise $50,000! “Every single dollar raised goes directly to the charities,” says Ryan. The calendar is completely paid for by the generosity of local sponsors. So what can we expect from this years work? Exactly what we have all come to know and love. A handful of Kamloops finest getting out of their comfort zone

(and shirts), to strut their stuff for a great cause. There are a handful of new faces this year to grace the glossy pages, but some of the past calendar favourites as well. When asked the obvious question, “Why do you think this calendar is so popular?” Ryan replies with a smile, but in all modesty, “We always try to have something that can go on grandma’s wall as well as have enough sex appeal to entice all. It’s something that

looks decent to the eye but is for a great cause.” No argument here. Your 2013 Kamloops Firefighters Calendar can be picked up at Fire Hall Number 1, 1205 Summit Drive, or go to www.kamloopsfirefighters.ca for a list of events and appearances where you can not only buy your calendars, but get some of your favourites to get out their Sharpie and sign it for you. Or for grandma. Cristina Ostapovitch, freelance

Make plans to attend World Rivers Day The City of Kamloops invites residents to come celebrate World Rivers Day, an event sponsored by BC Hydro, on Saturday, September 29th, near the band shell at Riverside Park. The goal of this event is to increase awareness of water related issues. World Rivers Day is a free, family event from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Booths will be set up by local not-for-profit agencies and businesses to share information on how they support the environment and promote sustainability within our community. Some of the exhibitors include BC Hydro, BC Wildlife Park, Bear Aware, Kamloops Museum and Archives, TRU SIFE, TRU Sustainability, the

Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and many more. Musical guests “Just Like That” will be attending along with guest speakers and face painting for the kids. A drumming circle will be performing a song for Mother Earth as well. Additionally, throughout the day there will be various activities and interactive games for the whole family. Everyone will have opportunities to win water saving gadgets and the chance to “fish” for prizes. There will be a grand prize draw for those who complete the event passport of SCUBA lessons tuition, courtesy of Ocean Pacific Watersports. Free lunch will be provided for those who participate in the Great

Canadian Shoreline Clean-up. Ocean Pacific Watersports will be cleaning up the riverbed as well with their scuba gear. The event began in 1980, when Mark Angelo founded BC Rivers Day. In 2005, the event expanded to the entire world, creating World Rivers Day. With close to 100,000 people participating in British Columbia alone, World Rivers Day will continue to increase awareness of water-related issues and promote core values associated with sustainability, conservation, and river stewardship. For more information about the event, please contact Amanda Wells, Environmental Educator with the City of Kamloops at 250-828-3377.

People Unite! Take Back the Night! People who want streets and homes to be safer places for women and children once again came out to rally and march to call an end to violence. On Friday, September 21, women and men of all ages gathered for the annual “Take Back the Night” March. This year, the speeches and rally began at 5:30pm at The Grind, 476 Victoria Street with Dodie Goldney’s great singing beforehand. This years “Take Back the Night” March in Kamloops continued its emphasis on “Safety Rights for all Women” – including those who are most marginalized due to poverty, street or drug involvement or being homeless. For Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre’s (KSACC) 30th anniversary year, men were also being invited to March with the women and children to show solidarity and support!

At Second Glance Used Book ends a chapter After serious consideration the at Second Glance Used Book Store will turn the final page and close the cover. Second Glance is closing its doors. Technological change in the book selling industry is largely at the heart of the decision. Second Glance Books owner, Pat DiFrancesco says, “It has been a difficult two years. We’ve put our heart and soul into Second Glance, but browsing in bookstores is just not the way people shop

for books anymore.” The At Second Glance Used Book store on Victoria Street in downtown Kamloops has been a vibrant location and landmark on the city’s main street for 13 years. Thousands of people from all over the BC Interior and beyond have browsed, bought and swapped books or just dropped into to say hello to book store owner Pat DiFrancesco and the dogs.

Zap! Bang! Kapow! The TNRD Library System’s Kamloops Library, in partnership with High Octane Comics, is hosting its first ever Mini Comic-Con. The event takes place Saturday, October 6, starting at 2:00pm and features an appearance by a well-established comic-book artist, as well as fun art and costume contests that offer prizes. Open to teens 13 to 18 years old, the inaugural Mini Comic-Con will be highlighted by the appearance of Vancouverbased manga artist Nina Matsumoto, a.k.a. “Space Coyote.” Matsumoto is an Eisner Award-winning comic-book artist who has released two volumes of her original manga Yokaiden through Del Rey Manga. A lifelong fan of The Simpsons, she also regularly pencils for Bongo Comics (Simpsons Comics, Bart Simpson Comics).

Matsumoto, with some help from High Octane Comics, will also act as judge for the Mini Comic-Con’s art contest. Budding artists are encouraged to create an original 2-D art piece in comic or manga style on any topic (keep it clean!) and in any media. Contestants are asked to keep the size of their artwork to a maximum of 18 inches by 24 inches for display purposes. Entries should be dropped off at the Children’s Desk at Kamloops Library by Wednesday, October 3, at 5:00pm. All art will be displayed in the library and judging will take place the day of the event. Winners will be announced that day, too, with first prize supplied by High Octane Comics. There will also be an entry selected as a fan favourite. And don’t forget to dress up, as there will be a prize for best costume!

Photo contest raises awareness of wasteful behaviour Don’t waste a chance to win! BC Hydro is calling for photos for the fourth annual Team Power Smart photo contest. Original photos can be submitted online until October 15 for a chance at winning a digital camera. This year’s theme is wasteful behaviour and judges will look for how entries capture wastefulness – whether that’s a kitchen tap left running, a thermostat set to high or half-empty clothes dryer. A judging panel will choose the top ten photos and the winning entry on November 1. The winner will receive a Nikon D7000 SLR camera pack-

age from London Drugs and the winning photo will be featured in newspaper advertisements in the winner’s community and in newspapers on the Lower Mainland and in Victoria. The top ten photos will be displayed at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria during a photography

exhibition this winter. Team Power Smart members are eligible to submit an entry. All British Columbians can join Team Power Smart for free at bchydro.com to get access to exclusive member contests and rewards and to learn about saving energy. BC Hydro runs the

Team Power Smart photo contest each year in the lead up to Power Smart Month. Each October, for Power Smart Month, BC Hydro provides increased rebates and incentives to residential and commercial customers to encourage them to adopt energy efficient products and behaviours.

2012 Santa Claus Parade sign-up Its that time of year again! Time to start thinking about your entry in the 2012 Kamloops Santa Claus Parade. This years theme is ‘Celebrating Kamloops’ Bicentennial’. Jiffy Lube helps to keep your engine clean Your car-care family may have a new name, but the quality, service and people you’ve always trusted remain the same. Jiffy Lube is conveniently located at 1395 Battle Street. Formerly Lube X, the shop still offers quick, drive-up service in one of their two bays. The shop is hosting a Customer Appreciation Day on October 5 so drop by! They are warranty-approved, use high quality products for all vehicle makes and models and are able to provide you with preventative and recommended maintenance that your vehicle manufacturer requires. Jiffy Lube is in the business of keeping vehicles running right - so you can “Leave worry behind.” Customer education is a priority and their highly trained technicians continue to offer sound advice and a broad range of services for your valued investment - your vehicle. Taking care of a vehicle can be stressful. Everyone wants to keep their car on the road as long as possible. The services Jiffy Lube provides are all designed to help keep you and your vehicle out of the repair shop. Sandra Simpson of Jiffy Lube wants to remind drivers. “Now is a good time to try synthetic oil. It’s better for your engine and is the best for cold starts.” One of the main functions of oil is to keep moving parts separated from each other, preventing damage and wear. Some of the parts within your engine never really touch but rather ride on a thin film of oil. The oil within your engine is constantly cleaning and it picks up dirt, contaminants and combustion by-products. When the oil becomes saturated the “sludge” takes over. This sludge is one of the top enemies of your engine so you want to take action before. It’s preventive maintenance - chang-

ing, inspecting, checking/filling and cleaning essential components of your vehicle that will keep it running smoothly. By taking care of your vehicle with Jiffy Lube your vehicle will be with you for a long time. Their signature service is so much more than a fast, while-you-wait oil change. Auxiliary services such as wiper blades, headlights, belts, air filters, cabin air filters, fuel filters and oil/ fuel additives, are all replaced by competent technicians while you relax in your vehicle. If your “baby” is down and out, you can get her motor running again with their full range of repair services that include

transmission, coolant systems and driveline service. It’s important to remember that regular oil changes and preventative maintenance protect and help your car to perform better. The timing of oil changes can vary depending on the type of vehicle you drive, where you drive, and how you drive. Old Man Winter is just around the corner. Maybe now is the time to talk to a specialist at Jiffy Lube so you can expect excellent performance from your vehicle under the extreme temperatures and operating conditions of the colder season. Tickled pink for desserts From now until October 16, there’s a good reason to say YES to dessert! A number of restaurants in Kamloops are joining forces for the annual Tickled Pink Desserts campaign in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Ric’s Grill, The Commodore Grand Café and Lounge and The Firesde Steakhouse and Bar at The Plaza Hotel have created a special pink dessert or identified an existing dessert from their menu as part of the campaign. For each dessert sold, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to support breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. “This is the third year the Tickled Pink Dessert campaign is running in Kamloops and we are very excited to once again work with a number of fantastic restaurants to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer,” said Starr Webb, Co-Run Director for the Kamloops Run site. “We hope the community gets a chance to visit at least one of the participating restaurants and support the cause by sampling their Tickled Pink dessert.” The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is the largest single-day, volunteer-led national event in Canada in support of breast cancer. The CIBC Run for the Cure takes place at Rotary Bandshell, Riverside Park on Sunday, September 30 at 10:00am. To I R E visit C cbcf.org. T O R Y participate, donateDor volunteer,

A vision of creating a future without breast cancer

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is the largest single-day, volunteer-led national event in Canada in support of breast cancer. Last year, in Kamloops, 1300 walkers and runners raised over $189,000. This year’s CIBC Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Run for the Cure is on Sunday, September 30 at 9:00 a.m. at the band shell at Riverside Park. While most children are spending their Saturday afternoons playing with friends, one six-year is raising funds for the cause and having plenty of fun in the process. Mikaela York has been collecting bottles since mid August as a fundraiser for her participation in the CIBC Run for the Cure. After volunteering to hand out water to local Boogie the Bridge runners with her mother earlier this summer, Mikaela found she enjoyed volunteering and jumped at the suggestion to join a local Run for the Cure team. As a participant in the Seeds of Hope Team, Mikaela has shown drive and determination not found in many

adults. She has been a creative fundraiser, spending Saturday afternoons collecting bottles from family, friends, neighbours and even collecting at her own daycare for a week. Her mother, Denise York remarks “She has certainly learned that it is hard work raising money, but she has also learned that it is important to help people and this is an important cause.“ Mark your calendar for this non-competitive family event. To join the run as an individual or team, volunteer or to make a donation visit cbcf.org. On Sunday, September 30, who are you running for?

5 1-

LIBRA (Sept 24-Oct 23)  Look into any educational activities involving the whole family. Don’t forget family obligations. You are best to work behind the scenes on projects that require detail or precision. Don’t get involved in other people’s private doings. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22)  Don’t count on your friends to be loyal when it comes to doing things. Overindulgence may cause conflicts. Discord may arise with someone you’re close to. You’ve been hurt before and could be again if you don’t play hard to get. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21)  Check into art objects or precious stones. You can do well in group endeavors. Sudden romantic connections may be short lived. You will learn valuable skills if you sign up for seminars this week. Don’t overload your plate. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Try to accommodate them without infringing on your own responsibilities. Your self esteem will benefit. Friends will be loyal and caring. Career moves will be prosperous. AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19)  Jealous coworkers may try to sabotage your attempts to get ahead. You will be subject to pushy individuals if you get involved in uncertain organizations. You will be popular and will easily attract members of the opposite sex. PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20)  Try not to argue about trivial matters. Obstacles may stand in your way where career and success are concerned. You can get into weight loss programs or go out and change your image with a new look in clothing, hairstyle, and attitude. ARIES (Mar 21-April 20)  Changes could be overwhelming. Don’t give them the use of your credit card. You will be encouraged to get involved in a moneymaking venture. Your disciplined attention to jobs will enhance your position. TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21)  Short trips will be educational. Social evenings at your place will be highly successful. Don’t make those you live with feel unloved or unworthy. Do things because you want to, not because someone else thinks you should. GEMINI (May 22-June 21)  Your stubbornness coupled with your mate’s jealousy don’t make for a favorable time. Any attractions toward clients will be one sided and must be put right out of your head. If you can, make phone calls instead of going out. CANCER (June 22-July 22)  You can beautify your surroundings by renovating or redecorating. You are in a high energy, get it all done, mood and you’ll have little patience with those who are slacking off. It might be best not to spend your money on luxuries this week. LEO (July 23-Aug 22)  You must deal with an emotional problem with your loved one that you have been avoiding for some time now. Social functions will bring you in touch with new lovers. Travel may be confusing. You’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 23)  You may be emotional if you allow your lover to take advantage of your good nature. Do things because you want to, not because someone else thinks you should. Think twice before you volunteer information. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Michael Thiessen.
