Learn about being an organ donor at Kidney Walk On Sunday, August 25 Kamloops will be hosting The Kidney Foundation’s annual Kidney Walk at Riverside Park. The Kidney Walk supports individuals affected by kidney disease by raising awareness about the seriousness of this disease as well as funds to help provide critical programs and services. Kidney disease affects one in ten Canadians and currently has no cure. This leaves organ transplants as the only hope for those affected by the disease. Wendy Rockwell is this year’s regional honouree for The Kidney Walk in Kamloops. Wendy will promote organ donation at The Kidney Walk and through her story help put a face to this disease that is often under recognized and undetectable in its early stages. For Wendy, being a part of The Kidney Walk and supporting The Kidney Foundation is important. Her goal is to get people to come out to the walk and learn more about organ

donation. She explains, “Getting the word out about registering to be an organ donor is important. It is easy and anybody and everybody should do it!” Wendy has family members affected by kidney disease. Both her sister-in-law and her cousin’s husband have kidney problems. Wendy donated her kidney to her cousin’s husband in
March of 2013. “For me it was an easy decision, and it felt really good that I could do something to help my family member out”, says Wendy about her decision to donate her kidney. Besides promoting organ donation, the event will also focus on educating the public on the several ways they can reduce the risk of kidney disease. Staying
fit and active, controlling blood sugar, monitoring blood pressure, reducing salt intake and avoiding common toxins like cigarette smoke are some of the ways to manage your kidney health. Thousands of volunteers and participants in 20 communities across BC are championing the Kidney Walk. These extraordinary
grassroots events feature live entertainment, prizes, fundraising barbeques, silent auctions and more. But most importantly walkers, runners and paddlers alike come out and show their support for kidney patients and their families. Since 2008, thousands of participants and volunteers have helped The Kidney Walk campaign raise over $860,000 for kidney patients in BC. This year the goal is to raise $340,000 province-wide. The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch is a non-profit, grassroots, volunteer-based organization that helps improve the lives of all people affected by kidney disease. Funds raised provide education and support; increased public awareness of kidney health and organ donation as well as ongoing research that provides hope and an enhanced quality of life for kidney patients. Join Wendy and be part of The Kidney Walk in Kamloops on Sunday, August 25 at Riverside Park from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
