A new way to dine: the local food wanderlust Looking for an out-of-the-box way to explore Kamloops restaurants? Dishcrawl, an international movement inviting diners to eat out in a new way, is coming to Kamloops. A Dishcrawl is the unique experience of eating at four different restaurants in one night with other food lovers from your community. On Wednesday, September 18 local foodies can be part of this adventurous restaurant tour that is all about eating, talking and raising awareness about downtown food spots. A start-up born in California, the Dishcrawl concept has enjoyed success in larger cities like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York and Miami over the last two years, and is expanding into smaller centres around the world. “We’re reimagining with the way people think about food and drink in their community,” says Tracy Lee, Founder of Dishcrawl, whose mission is to show food lovers the best dishes in their local restaurants. “This is a great way for neighbors to get out and interact with the local businesses.” The word ‘local’ is key here: the Dishcrawl concept focuses solely on local, family-owned businesses, not big franchises. “Restaurant owners and managers become part of the event,” explains Kamloops’ Dishcrawl ambassador
Anita Lyapina is Kamloops’ own Dishcrawl Ambassador, and she can’t wait to host creative food events for the community.

stands behind their favourite dish. In our event the people behind the food are there to introduce their dishes and engage diners.” Participating eateries are kept secret until 48 hours before the
event, adding an element of excitement for diners, but we can say that as a rule they are always within 10 minute’s walking distance of one another. Each stop will serve up to three items they want to feature from their menu, adding up to a four-course meal over the evening. To keep the event fairly intimate and allow for an opportunity to get to know one another, a maximum of 40 people will travel together, spending roughly 45 minutes at each stop and keeping the entire experience under three hours. Anita, who has been in Kamloops for two years after emigrating from Russia, chose the downtown core for its charm, but she will be planning other Dishcrawls in other parts of the city. Dishcrawl is the flagship event for the company, but there are several others that will be coming to Kamloops as the company grows. Other happenings include a Brew Benefit beer tasting tour; Neighborfood, which takes a larger group to eight different restaurants to try eight different dishes; their Whiskey Waltz, which focuses strictly on whiskey tasting; and a Taco Camp. “Ambassadors in other cities have taken the concept to host private events, as well, like bachelor par– continued on page 2
