Kamloops Prepares for historic Canada day Party This year’s July 1 Canada Day celebrations in Kamloops are expected to be bigger and better than any in recent memory, with a plethora of events around the city as the country marks its historic 150th birthday. As usual, the epicenter of the action will be in the city’s beautiful Riverside Park, where people of all ages and walks of life will congregate to indulge in food, fun, and patriotism. The Get Happy Run series will start the day off with its fifth annual Canada Day Run, with 2K, 5K, and 10K runs beginning at Riverside Park at 8:00 a.m. The organizers have encouraged all runners, from competitive to casual, to kick off their Canada Day with a healthy morning run. And don’t forget to fuel up for your run by indulging in a pancake breakfast hosted by the Kamloops Brock Central Lions Club starting at 7:00 a.m. Continuing for more than 40 years, Art in the Park hosted by the Kamloops Art Council (KAC) will once again be held in the east end of Riverside Park. A full day of exhibitions, sales and performances is expected to draw some 30,000 people, with more than 100 artists displaying their handcrafted and original work, from painting to pottery and fashion. The KAC Performing Arts Stage also featured entertainment for all ages last year. Running alongside Art in the Park will be the Kamloops Multicultural Society’s Folkfest, which celebrates di-

versity with international food booths and cultural displays. Located in the west side of Riverside Park, Folkfest will provide patrons with an increased understanding of the friendship between Canada’s different ethnic groups, as well as some fantastic cuisine. This year July 1 will mark not only Canada’s sesquicentennial, but also the kick-off of a much-loved Kamloops tradition: Music in the Park at the Rotary Band Shell. The lineup

will include the Bob Seger Revue on stage at 7:00 p.m., followed by Buck Wild at 8:15 p.m. and Johnny Cash tribute band Big River at 9:15 p.m. To help Kamloops residents avoid the hassle of parking, free transit with extended hours will be offered to help locals not only get to some of these great events, but also reduce congestion and emissions in the downtown core. - continued on page 2

Project X Theatre Gears Up For summer season Project X Theatre, the much-loved theatre group which hosts the annual summer X Fest Theatre Festival downtown in Prince Charles Park, is gearing up for another season of shows. The group showcases two full-length productions each summer and this year will feature retellings of two classic stories: The Jungle Book and Rapunzel. In preparation for X Fest 2017, Project X Theatre has offered an interactive, family-friendly, show-themed storytime of both productions at Kamloops’ libraries. The first was held at the Kamloops Library downtown on Monday June 19, while a

week later on June 26 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. it will travel to the North Kamloops Library. Both events are sure to offer fun for all ages, with stories, songs and a chance to win a family pass to X Fest 2017. This year X Fest will run in Prince Charles Park from July 10 to July 29. The Jungle Book, the beloved Rudyard Kipling story, follows the rambunctious, curious and silly Mowgli on an adventure through the treetops and ancient jungle ruins in this new adaptation by Greg Banks. This fastpaced retelling will keep you on the edge of your seat as young Mowgli comes face to face with sneaky

monkeys, noisy vultures and the fearsome Shere Khan. Meanwhile Mike Kenny will present a new adaptation of the whimsical classic Rapunzel, about a young woman who lives with her loving, yet overprotection Nan. For years Nan keeps Rapunzel in an ever-growing tower in an effort to protect her from the dangers of the outside world. Year after year the tower grows higher, as Rapunzel’s hair grows longer and longer, until one day a local boy named Rafi befriends her and gives her the courage to be free.

Finally, the celebrations will reach their zenith shortly after sundown, as the much-anticipated Canada Day fireworks show will be held around 10:30 p.m. Residents young and old will be treated to a spectacular light show visible from both sides of the Thompson

June 19–25, 2017 DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) Sometimes even the nicest words get taken the wrong away and ego battles erupt out of playful intentions. Right now you’re in a cycle where attempts to be beautiful are met with harsh and ugly opposition. Find someone who appreciates your love language and enjoy the adventure. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) Luck lines up with love this week and encourages you to step into the starring role that you know has been written just for you. Put on your best dress, high heels, and smile, then go say hello to your fans. Every star has to shine. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Partnerships are beginning to play heavily on your mind. This week your partner or finding one will take top priority. You’ve worked really hard to get where you are but you know that it doesn’t count if you don’t have someone to share it with. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’re finally focusing your attention on what you’re attracting and luck replies with a benevolent smile. Joint finances bring luck and the team smiles from the extra loud jingle of extra change. Don’t fight while out. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You’re a loving sign with a lot to give but this week love simply asks for too much. Set your boundaries and make them stick. You’ve finally realized the waiting game is the same as going it alone. Be the love you’d like to receive. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re supposed to be our most optimistic sign but recent events have put a dark cloud over your natural sparkle. Take a deep breath and just let go. The stress is almost over. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Stop fighting with everyone! You’re suppose to be a calm, cool, and collected sign but recently you’ve been popping off like a trigger happy gunslinger. Give everyone a break and just hug it out for once. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) As strange as it may sound, a garage sale might be in order. Have your own or get out and visit someone else’s. Hidden treasures are waiting somewhere in the home. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Pick up the phone and say hello. It doesn’t matter what has transpired recently or what you think is going on. If you want something, an answer, an introduction, a sale, whatever, then you’re going to have to reach out and do it yourself. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’re midway through a personal money cycle so it’s no surprise to find yourself focused on creature comforts and what makes you materialistically happy. On the plus side, that dress or big ticket item that you’ve had your eye on might just go on sale. Stay alert for surprise chances to fill your boots. DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) It’s “Me” time. The struggle is over but it’s not quite time to jump into your next adventure just yet. Take some time to recharge your emotional batteries and pamper yourself. The new you needs time to learn how to walk before it can run. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Money is a struggle but you can’t bring yourself to fight the battle just yet. Recent events have left you completely depleted of energy and it’s time to rest, reflect, and recharge. By the end of the week you’ll be back in the groove.
