tournament Capital competition heats up The Tournament Capital is ready to retain its title, as two huge championship events are slated for Kamloops this week. First up is the British Columbia Summer Swim Association’s (BCSSA) Provincial Championships, which began on Aug. 14 and run through Aug. 20 at the Tournament Capital Centre’s Canada Games Aquatic Centre. The BCSSA is an aquatics program that offers competition in speed swimming, water polo, diving, and synchronized swimming. It is composed of some 60 club teams from around the province, including the local Kamloops Tsunami, and is divided into eight regions. At the Okanagan Regional Championships, also held in Kamloops two weeks ago, a total of 25 Tsunami swimmers were able to secure a place at the Provincial Championships. The water polo competition was held from Aug. 14-16, with diving on Aug. 15-17, synchronized swim-

BC, in conjunction with the Kamloops Minor Baseball Association (KMBA). The KMBA has hosted numerous championships for both Baseball BC and the WCBA in the past. “The KMBA is the single best organization in the province when it comes to hosting championships at any level,” said

Baseball BC Executive Director David Laing, as quoted by the organization’s website. “The legacy created by events like the 2016 Baseball BC Provincials and the 2017 WCBA Championships are important to both the community as well as our sport - continued on page 2

Aberdeen Mall gives for Canada 150 Canada’s 150th birthday may have come and gone, but a local mall is keeping the spirit of the landmark anniversary alive with a sizable donation to the Royal Canadian Legion, as Aberdeen Mall proudly presented Branch 52 with a $1000 cheque on August 9. Aberdeen Mall had been one of many local businesses and organizations to embrace the spirit of

Canada 150, offering limited edition, custom-designed Canada 150 gift cards and donating $1 from every $50 gift card sold to the Royal Canadian Legion. During the celebration Aberdeen Mall also unveiled a unique Canada 150 art installation designed by art contest finalist Colleen Pastoor on May 1. The installation was on display for two months and served as

a focal point for the mall’s celebrations. It also served as the backdrop for the 150 Faces of Canada contest, in which shoppers were encouraged to take a photo with the installation and post it to social media for a chance to win a trip for two anywhere in Canada (the prize was snagged by an Ontario woman).

COMMUNITY

No more butts! Downtown Kamloops has partnered with the City of Kamloops in ordering ten cigarette butt recycling containers from a company named TerraCycle this sumCAP comments mer. These containers were Keegan Lawrence installed in mid July along Victoria street and have been in full operation since. Hopefully this initiative will rid the streets of cigarette butts downtown while simultaneously preserving our environment. Every year, billions of cigarette butts end up in dumpsters and landfills, or get tossed as litter on shorelines, parks, and sidewalks across Canada. Although (according to StatsCan) the percentage of smokers in Canada have decreased to roughly 15%. There are still many cigarette butts ending up on the streets of our community. Thankfully, Downtown Kamloops has taken the first few steps in reducing that amount. These containers have been strategically placed in front of bars, coffee shops and offices throughout the downtown core in order to catch those butts from smokers. You can find them in front of businesses such as Carlos O’Bryans on the 300 block and in front of PDK Café on the 400 block. In addition to Downtown having cleaner streets and sidewalks, there are many benefits as a result of this cigarette butt recycling program. The containers will be emptied regularly and the contents will be shipped to the company, TerraCycle. TerraCycle exchanges these shipments of cigarette butts with money given to a charity of our choosing! The waste is then recycled into a variety of industrial products, such as plastic pallets, and any remaining tobacco is recycled as compost. All-in-all, cleaner streets and sidewalks, a less-polluted environment AND money given to charity are three things Kamloopsians can look forward to. Just remember if you, your friends, family, or colleagues smoke, remind them there is a place for their butts downtown once they’re finished!

Comparative Histories

This summer the discovery of a 14,000-year-old settlement off the coast of British Columbia rewrote the history of North America and its First Peoples. The ancient stories of the Indigenous Heiltsuk Nation people say that their ancestors clung to a strip of coastline during the last ice age, and recent finds of tools, fish hooks, and spears on the Central Coast’s Triquet Island seem to confirm those stories. If true, this makes it one of the oldest human settlements in North America, predating the invention of the wheel, thrice the age of the Pyramids of Giza, and thousands of years before preice age megafauna went extinct. It’s a remarkable discovery in a land with a relatively unexplored ancient history. In Canada, the history books don’t have much detail before the 15th century, when French and British expeditions began exploring, and colonizing, our beautiful land. The indigenous peoples of Canada of course have a rich, long history, however that history largely exists

in the form of story and song, so it can be difficult to verify. Despite recently celebrating the 150th year since confederation, Canada as a modern society is quite young, on a macro timeline. Consider even our own home, where a fortified trading post wasn’t even established until 1812 and the City of Kamloops itself wasn’t incorporated until 1893. So then, while the history of our little slice of Earth is quite interesting and worth exploring, it pales in comparison to the last place I called home, Istanbul, Turkey. In 1893 Istanbul wasn’t even

called Istanbul, and if you’re a fan of the They Might Be Giants song, you already know it was official called Constantinople in the West. By 1893 Istanbul had already been the seat of multiple empires, including the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, and seen hundreds of battles and sieges for its strategic location. After all, Istanbul is also the place where east meets west, inspiring the title of this little space in The Echo, and had seen countless cultures and peoples pass its shores. It’s hard to describe the feeling of walking through such an old city that almost seems

to respire history with each breath, particularly after having known a life in Kamloops. Sure, there’s some pretty old stuff around here, but most of the buildings in town don’t predate the 1970s. In Istanbul, some neighborhoods survive relatively unchanged from how they appeared hundreds of years ago, aside from a collection of satellite dishes on their roofs. In Istanbul, history is alive. That juxtaposition is probably the most jarring thing about Istanbul. One can see modern marvels of technology and engineering, such as the Bospho- continued on page 9

Rivertown Player gets Riversong guitar The bond between a musician and their instrument is an intimate one, which is why one could understand the heartbreak Jeffery Daniels felt when his beloved guitar went missing. Daniels, a theatre student at Thompson Rivers University who has been performing as a member of the Kamloops Art Council’s (KAC) Rivertown Players children’s theatre troupe, noticed the guitar was gone during a July performance. “The guitar belonged to my grandfather,” he said, as quoted by the KAC, adding, “And I love to play.” Daniels used the guitar extensively during his performances. Enter the KAC, who talked to Mike Miltimore at Lee’s Music to see if he could do anything to help after searches for the missing guitar came up empty.

“When I heard about Jeffery’s guitar, my heart sank,” said Miltimore. “Guitars are a very personal instrument that you spend a lifetime bonding with and I immediately felt the distress he must have had.” After the decision was made to help Daniels out, the choice was easy, as the musician chose a new “forever” guitar, a Kamloops-made Riversong Guitar. “I hope he has many amazing memories with his new Riversong Guitar,” said Miltimore. The Rivertown Players, featuring Daniels and his new musical companion, will be performing live until Aug. 26 at various locations around Kamloops. Make sure to check out their Facebook page for time and location updates for their accessible and free family-friendly theatre performances.

Love favours a long walk. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Bad habit take their toll and health concerns begin to peak. Love is happy to see you smile but I wouldn’t take a chance on anything new. Home brings peaceful rewards. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Hopping from place to place is exactly how you like to get things done. This week you’ll be busy knocking on doors, chatting up a storm, and saying hello to the peeps. Have fun and don’t let errand bog you down. DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) There’s a way to stop that financial leak and you know just how to do it. Put your plan in motion and watch your boots overflow with jingle of financial success. Love is waiting at the coffee shop. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Money continues to bless your chart but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be planning for a rainy day. Love declares a financial alibi. Watch your words as a sharp tongue can lead to a short temper. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) It’s a beautiful week to be beautiful and love is definitely smiling your way. You’ll be reclusive and somewhat introspective as the week begins but sometimes we all have to take personal accounts before venture forward.
