song, dance and spices at Festival of India Kamloops has a rich multicultural society, and that vibrant, colourful cultural mosaic will once again be on display this weekend at the Festival of India, slated to be held in Riverside Park. The celebrations here in Kamloops will include a number of activities for the whole family. Make sure to check out the Kirtan, a form of story-telling and religious performance art featuring a call-and-response style song or chant set to music that describes a legend, expresses devotion to a deity, or discusses spiritual ideas. Kirtan performances often include instruments such as the harmonium, flute, drums, and cymbals, and of course colourful and intricate costumes. In addition there will also be traditional Indian dances, and Mendhi or Henna, a form of body art from ancient India in which decorative designs are created on a person’s body using a paste created from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant. Mendhi patterns are as beautiful as they are intricate, and became popular in the West during the last few decades. As if song, dance, and design weren’t enough, there’s also expected to be a wide range of vegetarian/vegan food fare on hand, and if you enjoy Indian food you’re in for a treat. If, however, you are unfamiliar, you can expect to find all the staples of Indian cuisine, including millet, rice, and a variety of lentils, with plenty of spices to get your palate buzzing. Pulses of chickpeas, kidney beans, and black-eyed peas are also popular. A number of local Indian chefs

will be on hand, and participants can even view vegetarian cooking demonstrations. People have also been advised to bring their yoga matts to the festival. Yoga has become very popular in the Western world as a form of physical exercise and Kamloops is no different, with hundreds practicing yoga every day. Yoga however originated in ancient India as a more meditative and spiritual exercise, with the physical being just one part of the experience. Finally, there will be doctors of tradi-

celebration, and observations include the chanting of hymns, reading of texts,
