8th Annual Walk Fights Against ALs On the morning of June 17th, individuals, families, and teams will gather in Riverside Park to walk, fundraise, and raise awareness for the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. June is ALS Awareness month, and awareness is a key component of the walk, as one of the struggles in the fight against ALS is a lack of understanding. In general, those who are lucky enough to have their lives untouched by this terrible disease are vaguely aware that ALS is a debilitating and serious illness, but many are unsure of the specifics. 3,500 Canadians are presently diagnosed with ALS, and it is probable that many more suffer undiagnosed. ALS symptoms are very similar to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, making it difficult to diagnose. Often, it is diagnosed through process of elimination. Onset at age 60 is common, but younger sufferers are far from rare. The cause of ALS is still largely mysterious, and there is currently no cure. The disease attacks the body’s nervous system, and as the degeneration goes on, it causes various functions to stop working properly. Victims lose their ability to use fine motor skills such as writing or fastening buttons, and later, it becomes difficult to walk or stand, to speak or swallow, and finally, to breathe. ALS works quickly, although about 15% of known cases progress more slowly, such as in renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking’s case.
WALK To SAVE LIVES This year’s walk will be the 8 Annual Walk for ALS. The event is emotionally charged for a lot of people, since there is always a strong turnout of people who know or knew an ALS victim. Many of the participants are teams based around the support of a loved one with ALS. Over the years, the walk has formed a strong network of support for families and friends of ALS victims in the community. “It’s like a reunion,” said Kamloops Walk Coordinator Pat Tomlinson, adding that some people who have forged strong connections through the event only get to see each other at the Walk. th

Allies in the fight against ALS will meet at the Bandstand in Riverside Park at 10:00. The gathering will be entertained by live music from local band Caught in the Act, whose popular rock and roll sound was a big hit in last year’s walk. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for the weather, and are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the walk. The fundraising goal for this year’s walk is $35,000 for the Kamloops area, OPHI and the Kamloops community has al- QUEEN ready raised over $19,000 in online do- $

The Thompson River’s waters are continuing to rise above their banks, flooding local parks and walkways, and threatening roads and railways. In the fifteen years since the Kamloops Symphony Music School has been in session, there has been big and small successes, and it’s been music to KSMS’s ears. Kathy Humphreys, Executive Director, said, “While we provide music lessons, it’s much bigger than that. It’s not just about learning to play an instrument--there are numerous benefits to musical education. It helps develop areas of the brain associated with language, reasoning, and spatial intelligence.” Furthermore, students of the arts “learn to think creatively and to solve problems by imagining a variety of solutions. They also learn craftsmanship and how to recognize good versus mediocre work through studying how details are painstakingly put together,” Kathy stated. Music students also “learn the value of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work. It enhances teamwork skills and self-discipline.” Kathy remarked, “The performances that follow the music lessons teaches students how to conquer their fear and take risks. Participating in musical activities also contributes positively

Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green, which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage
door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don’t put your home address in it- put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

ECHO STARGAZER
Cancer troubles should be ending soon, a beautiful new day is almost here June 5–11, 2017
DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) For each individual Taurus the timing will be slightly different but the time has finally arrived to lose the shackles and embrace your personal new beginning. Love is going to stop in and say hello to the new you. It’s time to shine with confidence. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Behind the scenes affairs kick up with a passionate twist. Work your plan with confidence and expect support from hidden allies. Money begins to cause concerns. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) Your social network returns with a helpful smile and support you didn’t expect. You now have the ego energy to push back with a ferocity seldom seen from such a loving sign. Habits lead to success. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) Your success during this astro-cycle all depends on your choices and how you surf the energies. You’ll be attracting more than just smilingly admirers when you step out but at the same time, unhappy fans are beginning to revolt. Children will bring smiles. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Personal finances continue to shine but the “money you make with others” astro-cycle has now ended. Higher learning, spiritually, foreign interests, and jubilant gift giving are now the major themes of attraction. Friends want to fight. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A generally social mood will fill your heart with optimistic enthusiasm to get out and meet new faces. You’re usually quick to return a smile but this week you should also take the initiative and say hello. With love set for another astro-cycle, it’s time to start building that future together. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Peddle down Scorpio. The future is here and it’s time to make a move. You are now love partner number one and the entire zodiac is looking to see what you can do. Distant troubles hit close to home. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Interpersonal struggles have final subsided but some lessons will continue to linger. You’re not quite ready to move onto your beautiful day just yet but it is time to plan for the success that’s waiting for you on the near horizon. Love clears a busy schedule. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’re entering a romantic cycle of creativity and childlike enthusiasm. It’s not a very “Capricorn” frame of mind but it will position you for rewards you hadn’t anticipated. The past says hello. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) There’s a push/pull between your family and friends this week. Love and attraction is waiting for you home but the heart wants to get out and play. Prepare to burn the midnight oil. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) If you say hello, then doors will open but you will have to do the work yourself. Home life begins to settle as a new cycle of opportunities unfold. Take a chance on love. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Love has moved on to your astrosector of personal finances highlighting a new cycle of attraction. Thoughts drift to distant shores as foreign adventures fill the mind. Brainstorming business ideas with a friend sets you in the right direction.
