VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Celebrating the Remarkable Volunteer Efforts of Keep Durham Beautiful

In March 2023, Durham Parks and Recreation celebrated Creek Week, a week-long extravaganza dedicated to honoring and rejuvenating local waters in North Carolina. Thanks to the joint efforts of the City of Durham Public Works Department's Stormwater Division and Keep Durham Beautiful, this celebration took place from March 18 to March 25, 2023. Creek Week has been an integral part of Durham's calendar since 2009, inviting residents to discover and clean up their local streams. The success of Creek Week would not have been possible without the outstanding contributions of Keep Durham Beautiful and its partnership with various environmental organizations and local municipal departments. Together, they have created a platform that offers recreational, educational, and volunteer opportunities, ensuring that everyone can participate in safeguarding the health of our area's waters. Dawn Keyser, program coordinator with Keep Durham Beautiful, rightly remarked, "This is a perfect opportunity for people who care about clean drinking water and litter-free neighborhoods to help make a difference." The collaborative spirit and dedication to preventing litter pollution in Durham have fostered a safe and healthy environment. With an incredible 4,117 volunteers joining forces, an astonishing 190,637 pounds of litter have been collected to date. The impact of Keep Durham Beautiful dedication and passion is truly remarkable and serves as an inspiration to us all. By working collaboratively with the community and various organizations, they have succeeded in creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for everyone.

Cleaning Up Long Meadow Park

Thank you for Playing More with DPR!

Let's make 2023 a banner year for volunteering! For more information about volunteering with Durham Parks and Recreation, please visit our website, email Mal Atkinson at DPRvolunteers@durhamnc. gov or call 919-560-4355. You can also visit dprvolunteers.ivolunteer.com to view our latest volunteer opportunities.

In May, Keep Durham Beautiful facilitated a Park Clean Up at Long Meadow Park partnering with two local Boy Scout troops, Pack486 and Troops486. In just one hour, 28 scouts and parents tirelessly worked to remove 4 bags of recycling, 12 bags of trash, a tire, a shopping cart, and a drain pipe from the park and creek. Their efforts demonstrate the power of community collaboration and highlight the dedication of these young scouts and their families to creating a cleaner and more beautiful environment. Durham Parks and Recreation relies on a strong volunteer base to provide programs and services to the residents and visitors of Durham. We thank Keep Durham Beautiful for all that they have done and will continue to do!

Are you trying to save money, exercise more, or even just take more time for yourself? Schedule it! It’s more likely to happen if you write it down. If you’re a paper planner already, this event is a way to do goal-setting too, or to turn a chore into a pleasant crafting activity. Please bring a paper planner with you. We will be focusing on the monthly pages of our calendars. Since it is not January, a “dateless,” flat-laying monthly planner might be a good purchase if you don’t have a planner yet.

Exploring the Great Outdoors: The Remarkable Benefits of North Carolina Trails

Did you know that Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) is responsible for the maintenance of 31 miles of trails throughout the city? From Stadium Drive Trail and Third Fork Creek Trail to Sandy Creek Trail and Rocky Creek Trail, these multi-use trails are free and accessible to the community, providing opportunities for residents to recreate and exercise.

If you're curious about the Year of the Trail and wondering what all the excitement is about, let us shed some light on it. In a nutshell, trails are the essence of connectivity and vitality in North Carolina. They go beyond being mere pathways; they are a fundamental part of our community. Trails serve as the bridge between different places, allowing seamless movement and exploration. They create a sense of cohesion, bringing people together and fostering fellowship. By traversing trails, individuals connect not only with their surroundings but also with each other, forging bonds and building a strong sense of community.

Moreover, trails offer a unique opportunity for personal introspection and self-discovery through physical activity. Have you ever heard someone describe a hike, run, or bike ride as a "spiritual experience"? There's truth to that statement. Engaging in challenging activities on trails can elicit a profound connection with oneself. It's not necessary to spend hours on a trail to experience the benefits of this connection. Even a brief excursion can leave a lasting impact on our well-being.

In 2017, DPR completed a Trail Condition Assessment to review the general conditions of the City’s trail network and compliance with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. The assessment focused on identifying trails that were in the worst and most dangerous condition, specifically those that had received little to no investment for resurfacing and those located in historically disadvantaged communities. Repaving of the existing asphalt on various trails throughout Durham began in the Spring of 2022. The trails are being repaved to fix cracking, potholes, and minor drainage issues and add a center dashed line.

Trails have a way of rejuvenating our spirits, providing a much-needed break from our fast-paced lives. They allow us to disconnect from the demands of technology and reconnect with the simplicity and beauty of nature. The tranquility and serenity of trails offer a reprieve from the constant buzz of our digital world, allowing us to find solace and inspiration in the great outdoors.

The Year of the Trail is a celebration of the multifaceted significance of trails. They serve as conduits for movement, bring people together, and offer opportunities for personal growth and reflection. Trails are an integral part of the North Carolina landscape, weaving themselves into the very fabric of our lives. So, lace up your shoes, grab your bike, and embark on a trail adventure to experience the magic for yourself.

Experience the American Tobacco Trail at night with the Full Moon Fever Bike Ride, with Durham Parks and Recreation. There’s no cost to participate, and you don’t need to register. Depending on how far you want to ride, choose one of these two start locations and times.

7:30 p.m. - Early Start Time: The early start is at 7:30 p.m. in front of Mellow Mushroom (410 Blackwell Street) in downtown Durham. That group will ride down the American Tobacco Trail and meet up with the late group that meets at 8:30 p.m. in front of Bean Traders Coffee Shop.

8:30 p.m. - Late Start Time: The late group will meet at 8:30 p.m. in front of Bean Traders (105 W North Carolina 54) on Hwy 54 at Fayetteville Street. Both groups will ride together on the American Tobacco Trail to the end of the pavement at New Hope Church Road (7.5 miles one way from Bean Traders), and then turn around and head back towards Durham. Riders are free to turn around at any point and head back towards Durham at any time or keep going past the end of the pavement to the end of the natural surface trail. Riding pace is up to each individual rider, but is typically very casual. No riders will be dropped within the main group. Helmets and lights are required. The number of lights and the type of lights you have is up to you; however, the lights must be visible from at least several hundred feet from the front of the bike. You must also have lighting on the back of your bike. Rain or unsafe riding conditions cancels the ride. In case of inclement weather, check our website,

DPR Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages for last minute cancellations. A cancellation statement will be given by 6 p.m. the evening of the ride.
