THE HONOR SCHOLAR AND FELLOWS PROGRAMS

In DePauw’s Honor Scholar and three Fellows programs, top-notch faculty and talented students work together to ask and answer questions that matter and address the challenges of a new generation. These programs offer students specific ways to augment their liberal arts education. The Honor Scholar Program offers students a capstone thesis project that represents the rare opportunity and challenge of engaging with faculty members on a topic of the student’s choosing. The Fellows programs offer semester-long internships or research experiences and frequent opportunities to engage with leading scholars and industry leaders on and off campus. All of these programs serve as an intellectual home for some of the nation’s brightest and most ambitious students.

HONOR SCHOLAR: The Honor Scholar Program provides a home for students who understand that the most pressing and important issues in the world require the ability to think and work across disciplines and backgrounds. ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWS: This integrative program is designed for students who exhibit intellectual curiosity, high academic potential and strong motivation to address environmental issues. MANAGEMENT FELLOWS: DePauw’s Management Fellows Program connects students interested in business and management with the best of a liberal arts education and real-world experiences. MEDIA FELLOWS: Combining classes with hands-on media experience, the Media Fellows Program features semester-long, off-campus internships. The program is intended for students planning a career in media, as well as those who are curious about how different media operate as a necessity in performing effectively in other careers. 9

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

FIND YOUR GOLD WITHIN Waiting behind graduate students for internships and research opportunities? Not here. Whether you’re a natural-born leader or looking to hone your leadership skills, you won’t wait until your junior year to be exposed to professional opportunities. Not convinced that’s possible? Below are just four transformative opportunities to dive into at DePauw as early as your first year. PRINDLE INSTITUTE FOR ETHICS STUDENT INTERNS Offering three types of internships, the Prindle Institute for Ethics fosters reflection on ethical issues, including questions of justice and public policy, character, duty and responsibility. Depending on the internship, you will have the opportunity to write for the Prindle Post, attend Prindle-sponsored events and retreats, produce a podcast and/or be involved with graphic-design projects. BONNER SCHOLAR PROGRAM Selected from the incoming freshman class, 20 students who have demonstrated a commitment to service and community will have the opportunity to join a cohort dedicated to the same at DePauw and in Greencastle. The vision of the Bonner Program is to uplift communities through engaging students in service and civic 10

involvement during their four years in college. Accepted students receive a need-based financial aid award with limited loans. In addition, students receive extensive training in return for their commitment to the four-year program. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATES PROGRAM ITAP provides paid internship-quality opportunities for students to hone their technology and professional skills by working in on-campus jobs and projects involving technology. ITAP interns gain valuable professional, communication, technology and leadership skills essential to any career path, regardless of their major or area of study. This program is open to students across all majors. SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The Sustainability Leadership Program creates opportunities for student-driven environmental initiatives, educates campus about how the environment intersects with societal well-being and supports institutional initiatives that demonstrate the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Through both paid and volunteer handson opportunities, students are equipped to navigate complex challenges and create lasting change.

HOUSING OPTIONS

HOUSING AND RESIDENTIALITY DePauw is a fully residential campus; our students live on campus all four years and housing is guaranteed for all students. Each class year offers different living communities that complement learning inside and outside of the classroom. Immersion into these inclusive communities enhances each student’s intellectual exploration and personal development, linking liberal arts education with life’s work. HOUSING OPTIONS All first-year students live in residence halls with students from diverse backgrounds. Students become accustomed to a new community, explore their personal interests, adapt to teaching methods at the collegiate level and learn from each other in new ways. This eases their transition to college and growth into independent adulthood. Each residence hall provides programmatic and community development opportunities in addition to peer support and mentoring. Most rooms are double occupancy, but room size can range from single occupancy to fourperson rooms.

VERNON E. JORDAN JR. HALL The newest residence hall, opened in 2020, offers shared amenities that encourage students to study, learn, work and socialize together, including laundry facilities, technology-enabled meeting space and study lounges, kitchens and a sunny atrium to accommodate gatherings of residents. INTENTIONAL COMMUNITIES: HEALTHY LIVING COMMUNITY Healthy living communities are available for students who choose to commit to refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in their residential environment. (Availability depends on sufficient student interest.) RAINBOW COMMUNITY The Rainbow Community provides a respectful space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students and their advocates to connect and live together. Restrooms are gender-inclusive. All residents and their guests are expected to be respectful and sensitive to all identities within the LGBTQIA community. These communities offer resources, programs and events; create intentional opportunities for social and interpersonal connections; and give students the responsibility to set the standards of the community. (Availability depends on sufficient student interest.) 11

FINANCIAL AID Financial aid philosophy: We believe that paying for college is a partnership between the students, their families and the university. We seek to bring the university’s educational opportunities within reach of all qualified students through a combination of merit scholarships, need-based grants, student loans and work opportunities. At DePauw, the financial aid review process is holistic. Each application is carefully reviewed by a financial aid counselor to put together the strongest combination of financial assistance possible. When you will hear from us: It all depends on when we receive your information! If all of your financial aid materials have been submitted to DePauw before Thanksgiving and you have been admitted to the university, our goal is to get you a financial aid offer before the winter break. Check your email regularly as this is how our team comunicates with you if we need additional information. This is how we also remind you of documents we might be waiting on. Needbased financial aid is not considered official until all required documents have been received and reviewed. Financial aid offers may be revised if information is inaccurate and/or new information is received that affects eligibility. Helpful suggestions: • On all documents, use the best figures available and estimate, if necessary, to meet deadlines. Do not leave answers blank. Enter “0” or “N/A” if the question is not applicable. • Use the correct Social Security number and name as shown on the Social Security card. • In cases of divorce or separation, information should be completed by the parent with whom the student lives during the majority of the year. If the student lived with each parent an equal amount of time, or did not live with either parent, give information for the parent who provided the most financial support. If this parent has remarried, information for the stepparent must be included. • Students and parents should sign the FAFSA electronically with a Federal Student Aid ID (https://fsaid.ed.gov/).

IRS data retrieval: The Department of Education encourages all applicants to use the IRS tax data retrieval tool when completing the FAFSA. This tool is available to most tax filers who have a processed tax return on file with the IRS. Students selected for federal verification are required to use the tool to import student and parent income information directly from the IRS. Additional information about the data retrieval process is available online at www.depauw.edu/ offices/financialaid/policies/irs-data-retrieval/. If a student or parent is not able or unwilling to use the IRS data retrieval tool, a tax return transcript is required. To request a federal tax return transcript, visit http://www.irs.gov/ transcript. About verification: Some students may be selected by DePauw or by the federal government for a separate process called “verification.” In these instances, the student will receive a separate request from the Financial Aid Office by email and/ or by letter identifying what additional items are required to complete the file. The deadline for submitting verification items is 30 days from the time of notification or by March 1 (whichever date occurs later). Special circumstances: Students who wish to explain any special circumstances that may affect the family’s ability to contribute to the cost of education should send a written appeal directly to the Financial Aid Office. Exceptional circumstances may be considered only when explained in writing with supporting documentation referencing specific dollar amounts. Indiana residents: Indiana residents should visit ScholarTrack to register for an account with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Indiana residents MUST submit the FAFSA by April 15 to be considered for state financial aid. Visit http://www.in.gov/che/ for additional information.

DEPAUW NATURE PARK Between 1917 and 1977, the DePauw Nature Park was the site of a limestone quarry, where rock was blasted from the quarry walls, crushed into limestone aggregate and then transported off-site by rail. The 520-acre park is open year-round and features a Welcome and Activities Center, the Manning Environmental Field Station, a large amphitheater and more than a dozen walking and biking trails. The trails take visitors through the bottom of the quarry and around its high wall, through the surrounding woodlands, along what once were the quarry’s rail line and the banks of Big Walnut Creek.
