The Ebb And Flow Of Sturgis by D on Em de

At an overlook of the Badlands with my sonin-law Ryan Rose and his dad, Roland. This was just one of the many day rides we took this year at the Rally. We rode east past the Badlands over to the Lakota Indian Reservation at Pine Ridge, through Badlands National Park, stopped at the historic Wall Drug Store and back to where we were staying near Rapid City. A fun loop on two wheels.

S

o the 77th annual Sturgis Rally is in the books. The reports I read say the attendance was down this year. Well, duh, we’re still coming out of the celebration shadow of the great 75th anniversary in 2015, where something like 700,000 riders came to be a part of that huge party. There was only about 350-400,000 there this year, which to me still sounds like a pretty big crowd. From a business perspective, it wasn’t—and shouldn’t be expected to be—as lucrative as the 75th. But the long-term outlook is still solid because of two things that will never change...the riding in the Black Hills is so great and the overall atmosphere is so addictive. It is the big event of the year, and will continue to be. Thinking back to when I went in 2015. There were so many people there you could hardly get anywhere without sitting on your bike in long lines, often burning up in the hot sun. I am sure a lot of newer riders said they would never come back after a week of all that. They got their 75th anniversary patch for their jacket and that’s it. And down went the attendance meter.

But the “ebb and flow” of good and bad news works both ways. Take a year like 2017 and attendees, including me, can’t wait for next year. The weather was great this year, with temps in the 70s during the days and only a couple of pop-up rain showers that moved by quickly. And 300,000 less motorcycles on the road sure made it easier to get places. The word will spread about what a great time everyone had at Sturgis this year. Then next year people who haven’t been to the Rally since 2015 will plan to come back. Next thing we know we’ll be at the 80th anniversary and the cycle of the ‘ebb and flow’ will start all over again. Be sure to check out our report in this issue on just some of the many things that were going on at Sturgis this year. And maybe we’ll see you there next year! ■

THE BEST FUEL-INJECTION TUNER ON THE MARKET This is the new and improved version of the award winning PowrPro fuel tuner, now using the latest accelerometer enabled software for precise real-time tuning. Once you install the PowrPro you can say good-bye to old-school EFI “mapping products” and O2 sensor hassles. The PowrPro reacts to the bike’s acceleration to adjust for the optimum air/fuel mixture, under every kind of load and under all existing conditions. And here’s the really great news, should you need to adjust your bike’s air fuel ratio outside of the acceleration area, you can do that now with your smart device and our cloud based app.

PowrPro Black retains it’s simple plug and ride connection, for a simple installation.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON UNVEILS EIGHT NEW MODELS FOR 2018

Harley-Davidson Media photos

I

n honor of its 115th anniversary, Harley-Davidson has released eight new Softail models, a lineup that the Motor Company says are lighter, more powerful and handle better than the current generation of Softails.

In updating the range, Harley has retired its Dyna line in favor of the completely re-engineered Softail line as what the company is calling its largest product development project in company history.

“The new Softail models are the result of the most extensive research and development program in the company’s history,” said Paul James, manager of product portfolio, Harley-Davidson. “Thousands of hours of research and testing were put into the complete ground-up design of these new cruisers. All of the 2018 Softails are powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine, and four of them – the Fat Bob, Fat Boy, Breakout

and Heritage Classic – will also be available with the larger Milwaukee-Eight 114. Up to 35 pounds lighter than 2017 models, Harley says all eight bikes have an improved power-to-weight ratio for quicker acceleration, better braking and handling. The upgrades come via a new chassis and suspension system that the company says delivers a much better ride. The new monoshock rear suspension is easily adjustable for pre-load – the method varies by models. The all-new Softail models reportedly deliver an improved power-to-weight ratio for quicker acceleration, better braking and cornering capability thanks to its lighter weight.

Now, about that engine. Introduced for the 2017 Touring range, the Milwaukee-Eight has been reconfigured for the new Softail frame. The 107-cu.in. engine reportedly provides 10 percent quicker acceleration at 0 to 60 mph than the High Output Twin Cam 103. The 114-cu.in. engine bumps it up a notch by reportedly providing 9 percent faster acceleration than the 107 at 0 to 60 mph. The bikes also get LED headlights, keyless ignition and fuel tanks. USB ports will be standard on all models. Cruise control will be standard on Heritage Classic and optional on all other models. ABS will be standard on Fat Boy, Heritage Classic, Deluxe and Breakout, and optional on all other models.

Q&A

S P E C I A L

At the World Press Introduction of the Moose Racing brand in Colorado in 1994. Mike Collins (2nd from left) was there, as was Drag Specialties Magazine publisher Don Emde on the right.

MEET MIKE COLLINS

D

rag Specialties Magazine: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Mike Collins: I was born in the Midwest and my family moved to San Diego when I was 4 years old. I lived in San Diego until my mid-twenties when I decided to give the Midwest a try. I had always loved spending many of my summers there on my uncle’s farm. I loved that lifestyle. I started riding at 15, and started racing at 16. My first bike was a Honda CB92R, which was a domestic model 125 twin I bought from a sailor who had brought it back from Japan on an aircraft carrier. I promised my folks if they would buy it for me, I would never ride without a helmet. They did and I haven’t. Unfortunately my first crash was in front of our house when riding the bike home from purchasing it. I still can’t believe my folks allowed me to keep it after that. Outside of school, all I did was ride my dirtbikes and streetbikes. Once I got the racing bug, I couldn’t stop. I rode District 38 motocross and desert, as well as CMC motocross.

EIGHT QUESTIONS WITH LEMANS’ NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO

After returning to California in the early ’80s I resumed racing. Ultimately I ended up riding Over the Hill Gang and Old Timers motocross. My brother in law Wayne Cornelius and I started riding, and then racing in Baja. I put a lot of pre-run miles in Baja, and loved the riding and the people. I raced the Baja 1000 twice. Currently I own a 2002 Honda CR250 two-stroke. It’s an oldie, but still an awesome motorcycle. My streetbike is currently a Suzuki SV650s. I’m going to have to start looking for new bikes as my 19-year-old son has pretty much laid claim to my current ones. We also have a KLX110 that my 16-year-old twins share. What was your first position in the powersports industry? My first job in powersports was sweeping floors and threading spokes at Hallcraft Wire Wheels in El Cajon, CA. I was going to San Diego State College at the time, and was working part-time in my uncle’s automotive garage. A friend told me about the job at Hallcraft, and I couldn’t wait to apply for it. I couldn’t believe I would be working in the motorcycle industry.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

From doing paperwork, I started doing a lot of the ordering for raw materials and components. I also handled a lot of walk-in customers and eventually dealers. As we grew, we hired people for those positions and I became the general manager. How long have you been with LeMans? I’ve been with Lemans for 24 ½ years. I was working as General Manager of Kawasaki of Riverside in Riverside, CA when the late Wayne Cornelius convinced me to talk to Fred on one of his trips to California. They needed buyers and since I had been the assistant purchasing manager for Malcolm Smith Products for a couple years prior to Kawasaki of Riverside, Wayne thought I should talk to Fred Fox. That conversation and the subsequent visit to Janesville convinced me that if I ever wanted to get back into the wholesale part of the business, I needed to be in Wisconsin. Fred gave me the tour of our Janesville facility and I was hooked.

From there I advanced to director of purchasing until Roger Dolan retired. At that time I became vice president of purchasing. What are your responsibilities in your new role as president and CEO? I see my main responsibility to be the team leader. No one person can run a company. It takes a hardworking, enthusiastic and capable team. We have that team in place. My job is to make sure we are going in the right direction and that we are making changes where changes need to be made. Just as important, we will work together to make certain the core values of our company do not change.

MIKE COLLINS

Eventually, the owner Marv Hall found out I could type and I started doing the UPS paperwork for all our shipments. Webco was one of our biggest customers at the time, as well as a lot of chopper shops.

What are your thoughts on efforts to bring a younger demographic of customer into the world of motorcycling? I’ve heard people say, “Kids these days would rather have a cell phone and a gaming station than a motorcycle.” I don’t believe that. They want both. I have teenagers and they are glued to their phones and games just like every other teenager. They still beg me to take them riding as often as possible. The key is introducing young people to the excitement of riding a motorcycle. I don’t believe it is any less thrilling for them than it was for us. We have to create and support those initiatives to help them experience it. What market segments hold the best promise for growth? I believe all segments hold promise for growth. Currently the obvious areas are the UTV market and the entry-level motorcycle market. The V-twin aftermarket, dominated by Drag Specialties, certainly still offers significant growth because of the number of used units in the marketplace. How important is the aftermarket for powersports retailers?

Mike Collins (right) and Drag Specialties National Sales Manager Jim Matchette at a recent industry trade show.

What positions have you held during your tenure at LeMans? I was hired as a buyer, specializing in off-road product since much of my experience was in that part of the market. As the company grew I became a senior buyer, and then a purchasing manager overseeing a group of several off-road product buyers.

The aftermarket is more important than ever. There are a huge number of used vehicles being sold in the marketplace and they all need parts and accessories. Not just replacement parts, but parts to personalize and customize them to their owner’s liking. We all need new bike sales, but it is the aftermarket that offers riders the ability to continually improve and update their bikes. I’m excited about the future for our industry. We have a lot of work to do but there’s nothing new about that. As Fred likes to say, “If it were easy everybody would be doing it.” ■

2016 FXSB BREAKOUT

CO V E R

S TO R Y

BULKING UP THE HOT-ROD SOFTAIL

W

hen Harley-Davidson debuted its Breakout model Softail, the FXSB, in 2013, they announced it by saying “There’s nothing like a fistful of American street muscle!” How true it is, and the Breakout, maybe more than any other bike in the Harley lineup, is the one that screams straight-line performance.

They put a big, fat tire on the tail, included cast-spoke wheels ala old-time Americans, and then bolted a straightacross 1¼-inch drag bar up on the triple-tree. It’s a recipe for a convincing package, and a popular one. With a 103-inch engine standard, and a high-output 110 optional in the CVO package, there are plenty of suds to go with all this style.

The design team in Milwaukee planned it that way. Putting pencil to paper they took many of their styling cues from the classic Gas Class drag cars and bikes of the 1950s and 1960s. They stretched things out, lowered things down, and chopped other things back.

But, rare indeed is the muscle machine, either twowheeled or four, that remains in its as-delivered state for long. Joe Houpt and the race-shop team at Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson in Thiensville, WI certainly didn’t leave this one untouched.

Small changes, huge difference. Once again the FatBook comes through, this time giving a Breakout-model Softail attitude plus.

Long, low, chopped-down and nasty — a great platform to build on. A little bit goes a long way with an FXSB.

A 2016 version of the FXSB, the bike they put together takes all that American muscle vibe and lifts it up to the next level. Truth be told, it didn’t require much in the way of effort or expense, either. Credit the team at Suburban with that, and, of course, the FatBook for featuring all the aftermarket replacements used. No strangers to cool-looking, hard-charging HarleyDavidsons, Houpt and the race shop team chose those parts wisely, applying them with trained eyes. Sometimes less is more and this is one of those times.

Leading the way here is a Memphis Shades Bullet fairing, slipped in place with its easy-mount kit. An L.A. Choppers adjustable lowering kit went on the back, further dropping an already-low bike. Those long and low lines got further enhanced when the LePera Smooth Silhouette seat took the place of the original. There’s also a Ness Wave front brake rotor on here now. A decidedly cool looking piece, it’s putting the stop to new Dunlop Elite tires – a big 240/40-18 one mounted out back.

A Memphis Shades Bullet Fairing fits in to set the theme. That 15-inch Ness Wave front rotor looks good too, not to mention what it does for braking performance.

Big meat on the tail is a hallmark of any hot rod. This one’s getting it from Dunlop, an American Elite 240/40R18.

Ness Deep Cut rocker boxes, tappet blocks and pushrod Clean as a whistle. Dakota Digital’s 3200 Series tubes team up with a Covingtons point cover, Trask’s *air speedo/tach provides all the needed instrumentation. cleaner and *Bassani pipes for oomph and impact.

The Breakout’s tail end got a little cleaner with one of Kuryakyn’s vertical-mount license plate mounts and a Custom Dynamics LED billet taillight. A handful of other additions made the list as well, like L.A. Choppers mirrors, Trask V-Line grips, Cycle Visions turn signal cover plates, a Dakota Digital speedo/tach and a J.W. Speaker LED headlight. Not a lot, really, but taken together it makes a whole lot of difference. The engine is always a focal point with a muscle machine and Houpt and the race shop didn’t overlook this one.

One of Eddie Trotta’s Thunder Cycle Designs Star Cut derby cover nicely continues this bike’s no-nonsense vibe.

Bassani’s *Road Rage 2-into-1 exhaust system, in black, sets the mean tone, figuratively and literally. A full assortment of Ness Deep Cut engine-dress pieces also went on — pushrod tubes, tappet blocks and rocker boxes. These pieces were joined by one of Covington’s finned point covers, a Thunder Cycle Designs derby and a full Trask reverse-cut *air cleaner assembly.

O

nce again all eyes of the chopper-loving free world turned their laser gaze to a rustic county park in Southern California’s Orange County in late June for the ninth round of the Born-Free show.

If you’re not familiar with the Born-Free Vintage Motorcycle Show, here are a few words that might help paint a picture of what’s arguably one of the most popular bike shows in the country today.

market is evolving at the light speed of social media posts, tweets and Snaps. Along with a handful of events around the country – check out Mama Tried in Milwaukee – BornFree is something of an epicenter for a new generation of bike riders and custom builders. This year, the organizers even added some flat track races – the Born-Free Stampede – at a nearby speedway track where riders hit the oval in classes that included Pull Start Mini-bike, XR 75, Vintage Single and Open Twin, Tank Shift, Ladies, Chopper, and the always entertaining Hooligan. Though the mad geniuses behind Born-Free keep the official numbers close to their vest, it’s estimated that more than 25,000 attendees from around the world flew,

rode, drove or hitched a ride into Oak Canyon Park in Santiago Canyon for two days of moto-madness. The show hosted more than 300 vendors, and was backed by sponsors (and Drag Specialties vendors) such as BDL, Biltwell, Burly Brand, K&N, S&S Cycle, and Speed Merchant. Other backers included Harley-Davidson, Vans shoes and Red Bull – it’s a big mix. Of course, the focus of the show is the bikes, and those invited builders didn’t disappoint. In fact, it seems that each year, they keep wicking it up a notch or five above last year’s entries. Here’s a photographic pictorial highlighting this year’s festivities:

DIG THE NEW BREED

G

iven Biltwell’s early adoption and powerful presence on social media — 300,000 Instagram followers and growing — the company has established a conduit to consumer trends that keeps it hyper well informed about the fast-evolving marketplace. It’s worth noting that Biltwell was founded in 2006 – the same year Facebook opened its online community to everyone, and four years before the birth of Instagram. Made-for-TV chopper dramas were still in heavy rotation on basic cable in 2006, but their impact on the industry and actual motorcycle enthusiasts had already waned. In 2008 the soap opera Sons of Anarchy went primetime, and teenagers tuned in like moths to a flame. According to Biltwell, for many of these teens, the TV tough guys of SAMCRO seemed uber-cool. When the FX network aired its last SOA in 2014, a generation of youth had been weaned off their BMX bikes and skateboards by melodramatic V-twin-powered excitement.

Fueled by the global presence of social media, and influenced by SOA, this new breed of custom motorcycle enthusiast came on the scene in 2015. The new generation is a global army of committed, techsavvy non-conformists, each one armed with the tools of modern motorcycling — a hand-built or home-customized motorcycle, and a smartphone for liking and sharing their experiences on social media, says Biltwell’s co-founder Harold “McGoo” McGruther. Reaching these new customers is relatively easy, he explains. All you need is some time and a cell phone, but first you need to recognize the players. During its 12 years in business, Biltwell’s marketing team watched its customer base change. In the brand’s earliest days, the typical Biltwell customer was a 25-year-old man with a $1,500 motorcycle – not someone you’ll find at your local Harley-Davidson franchise.

As Biltwell and its product line grew, so too did the crosssection of consumers who gravitated toward the brand; first among old school chopper aficionados, then more recently with the growing market of sub-30-year-old, Sportster, FXR and Dyna riders. If you don’t recognize any of these new customers, you’re not alone. One thing these riders have in common is an ambivalence toward conventional sales channels, McGoo notes. This is the generation that grew up with same-day Amazon deliveries and riding mail-order skateboards. The young guns featured here are committed to bikes and riding, but not to business as usual. Attracting these customers takes a serious understanding of the social-media tools that make their world go around – Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Does your shop have a social-media guru? If it doesn’t, ask your teenage son or daughter to give you a tutorial. Whatever you do, don’t give these customers the cold shoulder. They are the future of your business and the industry, McGoo explains. To help you identify key players in the New Customer demographic, Biltwell created the following portraits with consumer data culled from its robust social media. ■

LIFESTYLE: Works hard, lives as free as his parents will let him (see Fun Fact); very little DIY in his DNA, so he pays professionals to customize his machine. BUDGET: Easy credit after the global economic meltdown of 2007 makes buying expensive, high-performance bikes and upgrades easy. FUN FACT: According to 2016 US Census data; 23 percent of 18- to 34-yearold American men live unmarried with their parents, compared to just 15 percent for the same demographic in 1975. TIRES

The Battlecruise H50

Developed for American V-Twins It’s not surprising that Bridgestone would come up with a top-performing set of tires like this. A favorite with performance riders, for years Bridgestone was the spec tire for MotoGP, the world’s premier racing series. So, when a company like this turns its attention to a tire aimed specifically at American V-twins it pays to sit up and take notice. For starters there’s that UltimatEye technology at the core of the H50’s development. The technology was originally used to develop Formula 1 and MotoGP racing tires, and the Battlecruise H50 is only the second street tire to employ this extensive design analysis.

Bridgestone designed the Battlecruise H50 specifically for heavyweight American V-twin cruisers and touring bikes.

W

ith its new Battlecruise H50, Bridgestone has introduced a tire designed specifically for Vtwin motorcycles, with features important to your V-twin customers.

Starting with a clean sheet of paper and using specialized UltimatEye™ technology, every aspect of every feature important to a V-twin rider has been addressed. Bridgestone developed the Battlecruise H50 to excel everywhere it counts, using new compounds, new profiles, a new carcass construction and proven tread patterns. This long life tire features extended tread wear, a confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry surfaces, easy and precise handling, high cornering power and a quiet, comfortable ride. The Battlecruise H50 is available in four front and four rear sizes.

32

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

OCTOBER 2017

That analysis is an advanced computerized visualization of the behavior of a tire under various speeds and conditions to find the best solutions, and the optimum combinations of compound, tread design, construction and tire profile. With the Battlecruise H50, this resulted in a rear tire with a larger crown profile for better adhesion on road surfaces and a compound developed to deliver extended mileage. The front tire has a larger, more uniform contact patch for higher cornering power coupled with an easy and precise feel with less force that would normally be required to handle a heavy, American V-twin motorcycle.

The tread patterns on the Battlecruise H50 are aggressive in appearance – exactly what riders want – and are the culmination of everything Bridgestone has learned over the years through repeated on-road testing. The results are tread patterns that provides American V-twin cruisers with cutting edge performance and good looks. On top of all this, the Battlecruise H50 comes with Bridgestone’s Supplemental Road Hazard Warranty that covers the tires against any road hazard that renders the tire damaged or unusable. ■

n the V-twin industry, just say “The Rally” and people know what you’re talking about. The Sturgis Rally covers more territory than any other motorcycle gathering, with rides and activities throughout the Black Hills of South Dakota unofficially for two full weeks. Only two years past the huge 75th annual rally, Sturgis is still just as important to the sport and industry as it always was, just less crowded this year than 2015. One thing that 2017 rally-attendees enjoyed was the weather. As always there were a few cloudbursts and storms, but they didn’t ever last very long and the temperatures were much more comfortable than in recent years. Nobody gets everywhere during the Rally, but here’s a look at some of the events and activities the Drag Specialties Magazine team attended.

Darryl Bassani might be one of the most recognizable players in the motorcycle aftermarket. For good reason — he’s been building hand-built, performance-oriented exhausts for nearly five decades. Dennis Johnson photo

T

he scene is 1969, Anaheim, CA, and Darryl Bassani was beginning to get some pretty specific requests from riders, all of them talking about what they wanted from a custom exhaust system.

While good looks and great sound were two highly requested features, what they really wanted were pipes that performed; exhaust systems that added some get-upand-go to their bikes. Bassani, local motorcycle craftsman of the first order, complied and it didn’t take long for word to get out – Bassani Xhausts were the real deal, the total package. Here were Harley-Davidson exhausts that had it all — looks, sound and performance. Fast forward to 2017, still in Anaheim, and nothing about any of the above has changed, except, of course, for the scope and number of riders now asking the design team at Bassani for help. A team that still includes Darryl himself. Of course, 48 years ago there was no social media and no Internet, but there is now and Darryl and his team are

solidly plugged in. They’re constantly interacting with all the online motorcycle communities, and reading every email they receive. These days that input often comes from Drag Specialties dealers, along with recommendations and requests coming from Drag’s savvy team of buyers. All of this goes into the mix and impacts all the hot new products that Bassani introduces to the market. This free-flowing lineup of products includes the new full 2-into-1 systems for Harley-Davidson’s latest engine platform, the Milwaukee-Eight. Now, Darryl readily admits that it’s sometimes a shot in the dark, that no one can predict with certainty if something is going to be popular or not. However, with Bassani, more often than not it is. The R&D crew at Bassani is lean, mean and fast, and can rapidly respond to new market trends and rider needs. One example is the full line of handcrafted and Tig-welded stainless steel 2-into-1 Road Rage III exhaust systems. This hot-selling line covers a range of Harleys that includes

Baggers, Dynas and Sportsters. It all started with riders asking for a hot dog stainless exhaust that looks great and really performs (sound familiar?) and evolved into a complete range for a number of models. Bassani even ventures into other markets that often dovetail with the interests of their core Harley-Davidson riding customers. The company manufactures custom performance exhausts for Corvettes, Mustangs, pick-up trucks, SUVs, UTVs, and even a wildly popular set of pipes they developed for the Polaris Slingshot. All of those exhausts are manufactured in-house at Bassani’s Southern California facility where a team of about 50 skilled fabricators, technicians and assemblers is out on the shop floor at any one time. With the emergence of that hand-built, Tig-welded stainless line, it’s work that is labor intensive, time consuming and takes some special skills. The result is a truly handmade exhaust that looks great and performs even better. That new line of pipes is just one example of how Bassani keeps its ear to the market, ready to respond to customer requests and rising trends, just as the company has done for the past 48 years.

And that attention pays off, like when the message came through loud and clear from riders, “Give us stainless steel.” The result is Bassani’s Road Rage III systems, full stainless steel versions of the acclaimed Road Rage 2-into-1 performance exhaust. The systems are available for everything from Touring models to Sportsters, from the newest Breakout-model Softails to Dynas dating back to 1991, and for the iconic FXR. There are even special-edition versions like the short, sassy, upswept Greg Lutzka’s Signature 2-into-1. Harley riders asked for all this and Bassani delivered. Drag Specialties has it. Bassani has pulled out all the stops on the Road Rage III. These are a full stainless steel systems and they’re all Tig welded by hand. The head-pipes are equal length and, for maximum power and performance, they’re stepped, 1¾ inches at the ports, opening up to 17/8 inches before joining together in an advanced-design collector that empties into sharp looking and great sounding mufflers. The mufflers are offered in a variety of size s and styles, too. There are straight-can 4-inch mufflers, 4-inch megaphone mufflers, short megaphones, upswept megaphones, mufflers and megaphones for early 5-speed transmission bikes, and for the latest 2017 machines. There are stainless steel Road Rage III systems for Harley-Davidsons with mid-controls and with forward-controls.

AIR INTAKES

Max Airflow

Intake Systems for the Milwaukee-Eight

K&N now has Milwaukee-Eight fitments for its popular RK series high-flow air intake systems, a setup that provides better airflow for a boost in horsepower and torque.

T

he K&N RK series high-flow air intakes have been favorites of Harley-Davidson riders for years, and now there are fitments for the MilwaukeeEight bikes.

These intakes are full replacements for the restrictive OE air filter systems, and bolt directly to the Harley throttle body with a custom-fit aluminum backing plate. That backing plate features an integrated, internal-run breather system and a dyno-tuned velocity stack. An oversized K&N oiled-gauze filter element rounds out a setup that allows increased airflow and improved filtration. Four styles of the Milwaukee-Eight RK system are offered, all with different cover designs. There’s an open-filter Street Hammer version in chrome or black, as well as speed-styled Street Flare RK covers in those same two finish choices. Applications for both include all the 2017 Road Glide models, Street Glides, Ultras, Road Kings, TriGlides and Freewheelers mounting that new 107-inch Milwaukee-Eight engine. And beneath any one of those covers, Street Hammer or Street Flare, there’s the free-flowing, performancebuilding RK series intake system and that washable and

reusable filter element. Add one of K&N’s filter cleaning kits to the sale, and your customer is walking away with an air filter that will last a good, long time. The kit’s direct-fit backing plate is constructed entirely of powder-coated billet aluminum and features a fully integrated breather system that eliminates the need for messy external breathers. Thanks to a dyno-tuned velocity stack that’s included in the design, airflow is further increased for an even bigger boost in horsepower and torque. Everything has been designed and built to fit and work together. An RK series high-flow air intake system, installed on an otherwise stock 107-inch Harley, netted out a 7-plus horsepower increase on the K&N dyno. This was all by itself with no other changes made to the bike. A high-flow performance air filter kit is one of the first changes many riders make to a new Harley and K&N now has them for the Milwaukee Eight Touring bikes. There are also applications for Dynas, Softails, Sportsters and V-Rods. ■

Head of The Class

Performance Plus with Pro Dual Head Pipes

M

agnaFlow slip-on mufflers are a popular swap for Touring-model HarleyDavidsons, a step in the right direction for performance, style and sound.

A

However, experienced riders and savvy techs alike know that those mufflers are only half the story when it comes to a total, performanceminded exhaust system. Head pipes are just as important if the goal is optimum flow for optimum performance. MagnaFlow, a name certainly known for exhaust flow, has some innovative head pipes to start – and finish – the exhaust system on those Bagger-bike Harleys. They’re the MagnaFlow Pro Dual head pipes and Drag Specialties has them.

B

The key to performance here is the Pro Dual’s design. These are customtuned, equal-length 1¾-inch head pipes, an exhaust design that creates great low-end torque coupled with a strong, even progression of power all the way through to the high rpm ranges. Pro Dual head pipes, in both finishes, are available for all the 2009 through 2016 Harley-Davidson Touring models, Tri-Glides and Freewheelers. There are also direct-fit sets for the newest 2017 Touring bikes, where that 1¾-inch size eliminates the unsightly bump at the muffler connection on the right side of those new-model Harleys.

Performance mufflers are a popular pick for a Touringmodel Harley and MagnaFlow has some great ones. But to complete that exhaust upgrade the right way new head pipes are required. ■

Special Coatings for Piston Performance

W

iseco’s off-the-shelf pistons are designed to have the look and performance of a customized component, featuring some very high-tech attributes for a stock piston. The company has developed specialized coatings that elevate its stock pistons to high levels of durability and efficiency, most notably with its Black Edition pistons. Black Edition forged aluminum piston kits are available through Drag Specialties to fit Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight engine, as well as popular Twin Cam and Rushmore engine applications.

All Wiseco pistons are made in the United States from forged aluminum. The forging process aligns the grain structure of the aluminum alloy, resulting in added strength and durability that makes forged pistons stronger than cast ones. Wiseco oversees everything at their own facility, including engineering, design and dyno testing. ■

»» Talk to your Drag Specialties rep about the new Black Edition pistons as well as Wiseco’s proprietary coatings. You can also find information online at www.wiseco.com.

Like other premium Wiseco pistons, the Black Edition pistons feature ArmorFit™ coating on the piston skirt as well as an ArmorX™ coating on the entire piston. The quality, materials and coatings combine to offer protection against wear, higher compression, smooth and quiet operation and maximized efficiency. Each piston has Wiseco’s ArmorX coating, which comes from a proprietary electrochemical process using high strength materials. The process creates an armor-like coating on the piston dome and ring grooves, providing resistance to extreme heat and detonation. The ArmorX coating acts as a shield around the piston, keeping the forged aluminum protected against potential damage from extreme conditions. This process also creates the distinctive black color that gives the Black Edition pistons their name. ArmorFit Skirt Coating is a patented coating developed by Wiseco’s in-house R&D department. The ArmorFit coating comes from a “moly” (molybdenum) based dry film. After Wiseco mixes the ArmorFit formula in-house, a patented process is used to permanently apply the film to the piston skirt. ArmorFit is bonded to the skirt surface, and it is designed to become the piston’s sliding area against the cylinder wall. Thanks to this coating, Black Edition pistons operate quieter and smoother than stock, with reduced friction throughout operation. During engine motion, the coating will adapt and actually fit itself to the cylinder wall, eliminating the need to measure clearance or worry about noise and wear that comes from piston rock. Each Black Edition piston kit includes the piston, rings, pin and circlips. Corresponding top end gasket kits include both head and base gaskets.

Audio Configuration Made Easy

Centurion-Audio HD is a radio and speaker zoning and configuration system for Harley-Davidsons, making it a tool geared specifically toward audio use for models from 2006 to 2017.

The Centurion Super Pro is a diagnostic tool system that works with 1997 and newer Harley-Davidsons and Buells.

T

echnoResearch has already built a reputation for versatility with its Centurion Super Pro and Super Pro Plus professional tuning and diagnostic tools. Now, the Centurion family is growing with the introduction of Centurion-Audio HD. Centurion-Audio HD (p/n 3807-0422) is a radio and speaker zoning and configuration system for HarleyDavidsons, making it a tool geared specifically toward audio use for models from 2006 to 2017. Like the Centurion Super Pro tools, TechnoResearch designed the Centurion-Audio HD for use by professionals. Dealers can utilize the new tool in the back shop to program OE and aftermarket stereos. In addition, Centurion-Audio HD can be used to activate an intercom system, Bluetooth, navigation/compass features, CB, the rear speaker switch, auxiliary 1 and 2 and other features. It should be noted that an OEM tool cannot perform many of the features the Centurion-Audio HD has, according to TechnoResearch. Like other TechnoResearch diagnostic tools, CenturionAudio HD is a serious multi-tasker. A technician can also use it to monitor various engine parameters, such as rpms, tps, battery voltage and engine temperature. It can also read and clear DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) for ECU, TSSM, BCM, radio, speedometer, and ABS. This is necessary because sometimes those audio-related issues will trip other DTC codes. Centurion-Audio HD arrives with everything necessary for use, including a zippered storage case for safekeeping.

For Victory and Indian models, TechnoResearch has the Super Pro Plus. It’s designed for independent professional repair shops.

DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT

Now Hear This

Drag Specialties carries the Centurion Super Pro (p/n 3807-0313) for 1997 and newer Harleys and Buells, as well as the Super Pro Plus (p/n 3807-0314), which works additionally with all Victory and Indian models. The versatility of the tool makes it an ideal option for independent shops that service a range of models. Not to be outdone by its audio-specific counterpart, the Centurion Super Pro and Super Pro Plus are getting a boost in functionality. TechnoResearch has released more than 25 new features with the 2018 license for the tool. Among the features is carburetor tuning, which users have often requested. That feature can be combined with a TRO2 system to monitor and record the air-to-fuel ratio, enabling the technician to make jet adjustments for premium performance. The Centurion Super Pro and Super Pro Plus will now have an active functional throttle actuator test, which will plot degree versus voltage in real time and test the functionality of the actuator throughout its full range of motion. The new IAC feature measures step counts versus voltage. This allows for full verification that the throttle actuator and IAC are actually working correctly without having to remove the air cleaner for a visual inspection. The tool can also provide TPMS manual sensor coding, the activation of the auxiliary 1 and 2 feature, the activation of the oil fan, mobile data recording for diagnostic purposes, ECU cloning of an original ECU on a blank ECU and more. The FatBook has a full list of the tool’s capabilities. ■

New Fitments for Touring Bikes and Trikes

Harley-Davidson FL models tend to get ridden two-up and loaded down. Upgrade that stock front suspension with Legend’s nitrogen-charged AXEO front kits.

A

s it is with most stock bikes, new HarleyDavidsons can almost always benefit from an upgrade over the OE suspension. This is especially a good move if it’s a big FL Touring model that’s regularly ridden two-up and loaded down. For years Legend Suspensions’ AIR and AIR-A rear shocks, and the dual-chambered and nitrogen-charged AXEO front kits, have given riders complete control over the suspension characteristics of their bikes. Now the company has expanded its fitments to include HarleyDavidson 2015 through 2017 Touring models and Trikes. New applications for the AIR and rebound-adjustable AIR-A rear suspensions include all the late model Road Glides, the FLHT/FLHR/FLHX bikes and the latest model Trikes. The fitments accommodate both 12-inch and 13-inch needs. The AIR and AIR-A are air-spring systems, and do not use any coil springs. The AIR-A version features rebound adjustment to go along with the myriad adjustment possibilities of those air springs. Either way, AIR or AIR-A, a rider has complete control over the ride, handling, ride height and load capacity of the bike. Legend’s Aramid Fiber air spring technology provides almost limitless spring-rate adjustability.

In all of the applications, stability, cornering feel and traction are all significantly improved. The setup nearly eliminates front-end dive during heavy braking and there’s a firm, comfortable feel at highway speeds with no bottoming out over bumps or potholes. What those AIR and AIR-A suspensions do for the rear, AXEO does up front. It completes the upgrade, transforming the way an FL-model Harley rides and feels. Legend also has the AXEO 23 for FL models with 23-inch front wheels, a lift/leveling bracket for the 2017 Tri Glide and some new clear anodized REVO and REVO-A coil spring suspensions for FLs, Dynas, Sportsters and FXRs. ■

Audio Kits for Better Road Tunes There are two versions of the Klock Werks Powered by Kicker Audio Fit Kit to fit FLHT and Road Glide models, including the standard kit and the King Tour-Pak. Each Audio Fit Kit includes a pair of 6½-inch weatherproof, high-performance, dual voice coil speakers. They fit into the factory openings and come with mounting rings and spacers. The King Tour-Pak includes a pair of 5¼-inch speakers. The amp has a small footprint, both in terms of size and current draw. Although it provides high power, it pulls less than 10 amps at maximum output. Its size makes it easy to mount inside the fairing or a top case via an included customfit stainless-steel bracket. The custom wiring harness in each Audio Fit Kit ensures true plug-and-play installation. All necessary hardware is included, and there is no need to cut wiring or make cuts to the fairing or other body parts. Instructions are included, too. Klock Werks knows that some riders want as much control over their audio as possible, which is not always easy when rolling down the road. Vibrations can result in distortion and lost audio from sound systems, even at low speeds.

With the Klock Werks Powered by Kicker Audio Fit Kit, your Touring-bike customers can get an instant audio upgrade. The Dynamat kit will help cut road noise and enhance the tunes.

W

hen two respected brands come together to collaborate on a product, you know it’s going to be good. In the case of Klock Werks Powered by Kicker Audio Fit Kits, you also know it’s going to sound good. Klock Werks teamed up with Kicker Performance Audio, a well-known brand in the world of audio solutions, to create a true plug and play product that was specifically designed and tuned for powersports applications. The goals of the Audio Fit Kits are simple — easy installation, the clearest sound and the loudest volume.

A Dynamat Sound Control Fairing Kit is a way to battle those vibrations, resulting in louder and clearer audio output from the speakers. Dynamat is a sound-damping material that cuts road noise and enhances audio. The kits also result in a tighter bass response and more pronounced mid-range tone. The Dynamat Sound Control Fairing Kits are custom cut for FLHT and Road Glide models, which means no waste and no guesswork. A computer creates sheets of Dynamat Xtreme and Dynaliner to ensure a precise fit for each application, so installation involves simply peeling the backing off each piece and sticking it onto the fairing. ■

Milwaukee-Eight Power Upgrades for the New Multi-Valve

Feuling has further filled out its line of Milwaukee-Eight products, a range that now includes such parts as upgraded pushrods, *camshafts, valve springs and hardware kits.

I

n Drag Specialties Magazine #7, Feuling announced upgraded products for the Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engine, a lineup that includes a number of hot rod parts.

Heading the list were two new *camshafts, a workhorse Reaper 405 and the high-lift/high-rpm specialist Reaper 465. There were also heavy-duty cam bearings, performance lifters, new valve seals, upgraded crank sprockets and fastener kits. Now Fueling is further filling out that range with full sets of Beehive valve springs custom wound to the Milwaukee-Eight’s multi-valve requirements, new heavyduty one-piece pushrods and complete *camshaft kits that come with everything for the job right down to the gaskets and O-rings. A gasket set, incidentally, that allows reuse of the OE pushrods or the optional, and highly recommended, heavyduty Feuling replacements. Feuling’s development work on this engine has also shown that adding one of the company’s high-performance fastener kits is a smart move. The fastener kit replaces the factory hold-down bolts with heavy-duty studs better able to reduce the stress on the rocker-shaft standoff mounts. Your customer can complete the upgrade with the Feuling/ARP Milwaukee-Eight cylinder-stud and head-bolt kit. Something else to be aware of is the Milwaukee-Eight’s redesigned oiling system, specifically the relocation of the pressure relief valve into the oil pump. This design change makes Feuling’s Milwaukee-Eight specific pressure relief spring/valve removal tool, and the PSI test tool toolbox requirements. This way, an engine builder can be assured of proper pressure relief valve operation, critical to maintaining oil pressure. Harley-Davidson stepped things up a notch when it announced the MilwaukeeEight, and now Feuling is coming along with a lineup of go-fast parts to add some extra grunt to that eight-valve power plant. ■

Another Custom-Cast Winner from Coastal Moto are plenty strong. They are precision-cast and custom-machined, and are ready to roll.

WHEELS

The Atlantic 3D

Add it up, riders have. Custom-contoured 3D looks, quality cast construction, easy installation and attractive prices, the Coastal Moto wheels are hard to pass up. The 20-spoke Atlantic 3D is available in Chrome or Black Cut, and is ready to go right out of the box. The Largo 3D also comes in those same sizes – a 21 x 3.5 front and an 18 x 5.5 rear – and comes complete with bearings and valve stems. They are available in Chrome and Black Cut and have applications for all the 2008 through 2017 FLHT, FLHR and FLHX fronts, and the 2009 through 2017 rears, with and without ABS. ■ Coastal Moto’s Atlantic 3D wheel is a true cast custom wheel that provides a muscular upgrade for 2008 to 2017 Harley-Davidson Baggers.

y now you’ve seen those Largo 3D wheels from Costal Moto, a true cast custom wheel for the aftermarket. Now, there’s yet another choice — it’s Coastal Moto’s Atlantic 3D, a new 20-spoke design wheel. Just like the Largo before it, it’s precision cast, custom contoured with 3D looks, and has a two-year warranty on workmanship and finish. It has a Lifetime Structural Warranty and all the bearings and valve stems are installed. They’re ready to mount in all those 2008 to 2017 HarleyDavidsons Baggers, just like those instantly popular Largo 3Ds. They come in the following sizes – 21 x 3.5 front and an 18 x 5.5 rear, and the new Atlantics also accept the stock Harley-Davidson cush-drive and pulley. They’re available with intelligent ABS bearings so they’ll work with linked brake Harley models and no ABS re-calibration or added modules are required, even if you only install that 21-inch front wheel. The Atlantic 3Ds also accept the stock Harley-Davidson lug-mount brake rotors, further reducing the cost of a custom-wheel conversion. All this is good news for the aftermarket, custom-cast wheels available for Harley-Davidsons that aren’t OE parts. They have a clearly custom appearance, at a price far less than anything cut from billet or forged. Make no mistake, these cast wheels, both the Largo and the new Atlantic,

BELT DRIVES

Open-Primary Season

Belt Drives for the New Touring Bikes The company now has applications for 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring models, the Milwaukee-Eight bikes. Two versions of the BDL 2-inch open primary are available, one using a single-piece motor plate, the other with a two-piece motor plate. Both are offered with finish choices of black or chrome.

BDL has two new versions of its 2-inch open primary for Milwaukee-Eight-powered Harley-Davidson Touring bikes.

O

pen-belt primary drives are a popular addition to Harley-Davidson Touring bikes. They look great, they’re strong and efficient and they scream custom performance.

BDL kits are favorites for all of these reasons and more. They also feature everything needed to get up and running – a no-nonsense drive belt and its pulleys, an expanded-footprint Kevlar clutch pack and one of BDL’s patented ball-bearing lock up pressure plate.

Like all the BDL 2-inch open-primaries, these two latest versions not only feature everything needed to get that bike out on the road, they also come with a short “heel/ toe” shift-shaft cone and one longer “toe-shift only” cone, both with all the necessary bushings. Everything needed is here, so there will be no surprises halfway through the installation. All of it is made in the USA by BDL, from foundry to final machining. ■

Iconic Style in a Versatile Seat

T

he dramatic design of LePera’s Villain seat makes a bold statement that transforms any bike the Villain graces. The Villain is especially popular with Bagger riders, but LePera makes the seat across the full model range. The traditional 2-up design showcases the bold lines of the Villain with a 10½-inch driver seating area and 7¼-inch passenger area. Plain, diamond and pleated finishes are all available through Drag Specialties.

How’s that for a unique profile? The bold lines of the Villain are available in a 2-up design and as a solo seat. Both provide plenty of comfort and style.

The Villain solo seat has the same groundbreaking lines as the full-length Villain, but it is 10 inches wide and bobbed in the rear. Drag Specialties carries the seat in plain, diamond and pleated finishes, as well as a bold brown diamond finish with black contrast panels. Long-haul riders might want the extra real estate for the rider and passenger offered by the Super Villain, which has a 14½-inch wide driver seating area and 11 inches for the passenger.

The Villain Daddy Long Legs, meanwhile, is designed for riders who need more legroom. Setting the rider back an extra two inches over the regular Villain, the driver seating area is ten inches wide, and passengers still have plenty of room at the back, with 7¼ inches. The Villain and Villain solo are available for most all bikes. The Super Villain and Villain Daddy Long Legs are both available for late-model Touring bikes. ■

Sealed Right, Sealed Tight James Gaskets Fork Kits

N

othing’s more frustrating, or messy, than a leaking gasket or seal. Or worse yet a replacement that doesn’t fix the problem. The late James Clark, “the Godfather of gaskets,” knew that and the result was James Gaskets, Inc., the company he created that has grown to produce a comprehensive and relied upon lineup of gaskets and seals for Harley-Davidsons.

James Gaskets’ all-in-one Fork Seal Kits include everything needed to reseal and rebuild a set of Harley-Davidson forks.

They fit right, seal tight and include a full selection of washers, seals, covers, screws, O-rings, plugs, caps and retaining clips for every Harley-Davidson fork going all the way back to models from the late ’40s. James Gaskets’ all-in-one Fork Seal Kits are right there in the FatBook and OldBook. Taking all the work and worry out of putting together the correct assortment of parts needed for a particular re-seal job, the Fork Seal Kits come with everything needed all in one box.

Applications cover everything, we’re talking FLs, FXs, XLs, V-Rods and Trikes from the ’40s right up to present-day models and everything included is high quality. All of this is available under one part number, making for a quick and easy selection. Getting halfway through a re-seal job only to discover one critical piece of the puzzle missing is pretty frustrating, too. That won’t happen here. You know your customers and you know the kits they’ll ask for. ■
