Motorcycling is a people business and if you do business in some way with Drag Specialties, the people you need to know are at the NVP events. Check out the report that starts on page 28 and you’ll see who was there and some of the highlights of the week. It won’t be long and we’ll all be heading for Indy! Hope to see you there.

he motorcycling community in the southeast will not be denied an opportunity to ride if at all possible. In October, hurricane or not, Biketoberfest was on! While much of the state of Florida was still patching things up from Irma, riders by the thousands fired up their bikes and made their way to Daytona Beach. It was just like they did a year ago after Hurricane Matthew came thru. Be sure to check out our report from the event, with action from Main Street to Destination Daytona.

We have a Drag Specialties FatBook Bike for you. The feature story in this issue is about a 2016 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King, taken to the next level by our buddies at Suburban Harley-Davidson in Thiensville, WI. Just check out some of the brands on the build sheet and you can tell this bike is something special: Arlen Ness, Carl Brouhard Designs, Custom Dynamics, DP Brakes, Drag Specialties, Hogtunes, Khrome Werks, LA Choppers, S&S Cycle and Legend Suspension. As always, we have all the Drag part numbers in the story in case you want to build one for yourself or a customer. ■

An event of a different nature is also featured in this issue. Just say the letters, “N.V.P.” and anyone involved with LeMans Corporation knows exactly what you are talking about. It’s the National Vendor Presentations, of course. Now that there are two, they just need to know if you mean Indianapolis or Madison? In this case, we’re talking about the annual NVP Product Expo that was held in August in Madison, WI.

Ride Safe!

NEWS EVENTS Larry “Spiderman” McBride for the Win! LEGEND RUNS CAREER-BEST 255 MPH

T

op fuel motorcycle drag racer Larry “Spiderman” McBride put the hammer down at Rockingham Dragway in a performance that not only earned him a victory for the day, but also a career-best speed of 255 mph. The Drag Specialties-backed racer headed into the Rockingham, NC stop of the ManCup Motorcycle Drag Racing series in September with the need to defend a slim five-point lead over veteran Sam Wills. McBride not only bested Wills, but also landed a new record for his four-decades-long career. “I don’t know what to say other than wow,” McBride told Cycledrag.com. “I could tell it was faster than I had ever been. Everything around me seemed to be moving so much faster.” The website reported that the weekend started out with Wills scoring a 5.90 run in qualifying to get the pole position. McBride ran a 6.11, earning him second in the six-bike field.

Heading into Sunday, McBride and his crew worked to sort things out for a better run. The work paid off on Sunday when McBride and racer Chris Hand ran a side-by-side 5-second pass, the first ever for the ManCup series and the third in the history of the sport. Hand ran a 5.88, while McBride checked in with a 5.95. It was in the second round that McBride recorded a 5.83 with his record speed of 255 mph, a clip well above his previous career best of 248 mph. He followed this up in the final round with a 5.82 at 246 mph to Wills’ 6.23 at 230 mph. ■

Need for Speed LOWBROW CUSTOMS FOUNDER GETS LAND SPEED RECORD Photos courtesy of Lowbrow Customs

T

yler Malinky, founder and CEO of Lowbrow Customs, has reclaimed a land speed record he first set back in 2011 in the A-VG 750 class.

The Drag Specialties vendor landed the record of 124.593 mph aboard his custom-built 1955 Triumph race bike, Poison Ivy, at the 31st annual World of Speed at the Bonneville Salt Flats in September. “Going fast is fun no matter what, but taking something slow and making it go faster than it should is what I enjoy,” Malinky said, “especially when I built it in my home garage out of swap meet junk, tubing and sheet metal.” Malinky’s Triumph originally registered only 33 horsepower at the crankshaft when stock. However, after getting reworked by Malinky and his crew, the Brit bike cranked out nearly double the power and torque of the original.

He set his first land speed record of 117.108 mph aboard the bike in 2011, a record that was soon bested, and last topped, at 123 mph by a rider at the 2016 Bonneville Speed Week. “We’ll be back on the salt in 2018 with Poison Ivy to bump up the speeds on this new gas record and try and take the fuel record as well” Malinky said, not missing a beat, “The trouble with speed is that once you get going, you always want more.” ■

W

hen flat track rider Jared Mees landed his first-place finish at the Williams Grove Half-Mile in September, he not only earned his fourth career national championship, but also put Indian Motorcycle at the top of the podium after a more than 60-year absence from professional flat track racing. Even with two more races left in the series, Mees had already racked up an impressive number of victories – and points – to assure the championship. Mees, and his Indian Wrecking Crew teammates would go on to dominate the podium after the season finale in Perris, CA with Bryan Smith getting runner-up and Brad Baker in third place. Aboard that Scout FTR750, the Indian Wrecking Crew finished the 2017 season with 14 wins, 37 podiums and six podium sweeps. With his victory in Perris, CA. – the 10th of the season – Mees set a new singleseason record with 17 podiums. Smith reached the podium nine times, with four wins, three seconds and two third-place finishes. Baker tallied 10 podiums, despite being out with an injury and unable to compete in the final two races. He earned five second and five third-place finishes.

Jared Mees earned his fourth Grand National Championship at the Williams Grove Half-Mile, and re-established Indian Motorcycle as a serious contender after more than 60 years away from professional flat track racing.

“It’s been an unbelievable season with Indian Motorcycle. Since first testing the Scout FTR750 last year, I knew the bike was special and like nothing I’ve ever competed on,” Mees said. “I greatly appreciate all the love and support from my whole team, all the fans and of course my wife. It was a special season, and one I’ll look to top next year.” ■

oland Sands Designs and a juggernaut of motorcycle racing and surf culture descended upon Southern California’s Bolsa Chica state beach for the inaugural Moto Beach Classic.

The one-day festival in October packed in a rowdy mix of Super Hooligan racing, drag and mini bike racing, surf competitions, top-billed musical acts, art, food and drink, and a stunt show by Jason Britton’s No Limit crew. The counterculture explosion attracted fans of internal combustion madness and all-things creative, as well as spectators eager to see the series finale of the Roland Sands & Indian Motorcycle Super Hooligan National Championship. Road racer Andy DiBrino won the series championship after a tough fight with Grand National champion Joe Kopp and racer Brad Spencer. The win earned DiBrino a brand new Indian Motorcycle FTR750. ■

Fast and smooth. That’s how you describe the legendary Springfield Mile. Rider #9 Jared Mees leads the pack here, just as he did across the finish line to win the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines final.

Indian Scores 1-2-3 Sweep at Springfield

One ingredient in Jared Mees’ 2017 success has been veteran race tuner Kenny Tolbert. Now an Indian factory crew chief, Tolbert has former AMA Grand National champions Ricky Graham and Chris Carr among the list of riders he has worked with.

N

o race on the American Flat Track National schedule has more history than the Springfield Mile. Dating back to the 1930s when handshift Harleys and Indians rumbled around the Illinois State Fairgrounds, the legendary rivalry was renewed over the Labor Day weekend for the Fall edition of the great race. Followers of the 2017 AFT season know how dominant the Indian team was this season, and Springfield was no exception. Jared Mees, Bryan Smith and Brad Baker scored an impressive 1-2-3 sweep of the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines podium, with Yamaha FZ-07 rider Sammy Halbert finishing 4th and Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track team rider Brandon Robinson in 5th aboard one of the all-new XG750R race bikes. ■

Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track team rider Brandon Robinson (44) finished 5th.

announced dates for both a Spring and Fall event: May 26-27 and September 1-2, 2018. Info at www.americanflattrack.com.

25 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG S tor y an d P h otos by Jo e Kre s s

March or October, Cruising Main Street is a Daytona tradition. It’s just a lot easier during Biketoberfest.

I

Easy access everywhere is the name of the game, one of the benefits of Daytona in October.

n a celebration of all things shiny, the organizers behind Biketoberfest 2017 in Daytona Beach took to calling the 25th running of the fall classic, the “Chrome Anniversary.”

However, just like with last year’s rally, there almost wasn’t an event to call Chrome, Silver or anything. Just weeks before the official kick-off date of October 19th, Hurricane Irma, a bruiser of a storm, gave Daytona Beach a heck of a punch. For a while it looked like Biketoberfest ’17 could be a no-go, much like in 2016 when the show followed close on the heels of Hurricane Matthew. Luckily enough in both cases the skies cleared, the roads (mostly) dried out and the party went on as planned. Even with hurricanes as an opening act there’s just no holding down this Biggest Little Motorcycle Rally on the Harley-Davidson calendar.

It doesn’t take much to get that classic look right, does it?

Not as big as Daytona Bike Week in March, Biketoberfest still brings crowds of motorcyclists looking for the kind of fun that the event has to offer. Riding up and down Main Street and Beach Street to see and be seen. Cruising the beach, motoring out to the Speedway, riding up to Destination Daytona for some serious tire kicking and hardware shopping. It’s all there, with virtually every major vendor in the FatBook on tap. There are jaw-dropping custom and hot-rod Harleys on display at the many shows on the schedule. There’s racing for anyone so inclined, and there’s plenty of good-times xxxxxxxxxx nightlife and live music available just about anywhere. Most of all, it is hassle free.

Custom Dynamics had the lights flashing all weekend long. They weren’t alone. FatBook vendors were all over Biketoberfest.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Big enough to offer all the fun, small enough to get into it. Two reasons why riders make this rally a regular trip.

For a lot of regulars at this annual October rally, this is one of the big reasons they return year after year. For the past two years, most of the license plates around town read Florida, Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas, but there are more than a few from the northern states, too. With these riders it’s the last chance to get in some warm-weather fun before putting the bike up for the winter. Just as importantly, easy-access and free-moving Biketoberfest gives everybody the opportunity to get up-close and personal with the vendors on hand, getting the full lowdown on whatever new equipment might be contemplated for a mid-winter bike rebuild.

Lined-up for their close-up, the eclectic Bike Show On The Boardwalk had something for everyone.

Low-key and smaller crowds at Biketoberfest means upfront/head-of-the-line parking, and easy access to anything isn’t a problem. Even on Main Street. There are rarely long waits at any of the restaurants or problems finding seating for the whole group at the watering holes. Biketoberfest is a user-friendly motorcycle weekend.

The same holds true for savvy dealers making Biketoberfest a must-attend. With all the major players in the aftermarket in attendance it’s hard to imagine a better chance to mix a little business with pleasure and get in-depth explanations about anything they’re thinking about adding to their inventory back home at the shop. It’s for all of these reasons that riders and dealers alike keep Biketoberfest front-and-center on their calendars. They’ve done it for 25 years now, right up to 2017 and the “Chrome Anniversary,” and are sure to be back for the 2018 run. ■

2016 FLHR ROAD KING

CO V E R

S TO R Y

Here we have a Harley-Davidson classic, lightly modified for a timeless custom look. All it took were some wrenches and the FatBook.

W

hile it sometimes seems that the big-fairing Baggers – the Street Glide and Road Glide – get all the attention from the saddlebag crowd there’s another machine in the Harley-Davidson lineup with a solid following.

It’s the Road King, worthy successor to the venerable Electra Glide Sport for more than a decade now. Straddling the line between full-blown touring bike and heavyweight cruiser, for plenty of riders the FLHR Road King is a nice mix, especially for anyone turning a nostalgic eye toward the past. According to the Motor Company, the Road King is where, “stripped down, nostalgic style meets the performance and versatility of a modern Harley-Davidson touring machine.” Fair enough. With its saddlebags, that tall and simple windshield, a low seat height and tank-mounted instrumentation, it isn’t much of a stretch to see a direct link back to the ’50s and the Duo Glide. Couple all that with 21st century reliability and the Road King earns its strong following. It’s a cool riding every-day cruiser with a timeless look, and a more-than-competent tourer.

Wheels are the Drag Specialties 50-Spoke Soft Lips, the front fender is a Klock Werks Bench Mark. Details like an S&S Cycle *air filter and a new point cover add interest.

But no Harley, no matter how sweet and well put together the package might be, stays 100 percent stock for long. That’s also part of the Harley-Davidson history. Case in point, this 2016-edition Road King. Customized and updated a little by Joe Houpt and the crew at Suburban Harley-Davidson, the Road King got a new, fresh look without losing any of its classic appeal. And, as Houpt and his team have demonstrated time and again, it all happened with bolt-ons straight from the FatBook. *DISCLAIMER: NOT LEGAL FOR SALE OR USE IN CALIFORNIA ON ANY POLLUTION CONTROLLED MOTOR VEHICLES 18

Clean and uncluttered. Drag Specialties 4-inch extended saddlebags are matched with a low profile Drag Specialties seat, Hogtunes speaker lids and Ness Smooth Hot Legs.

The first and most obvious change is the wheels. They’re the Drag Specialties 50-Spoke Soft Lip hoops, a 21-incher up front and 18-inches at the rear. They add a contemporary feel without abandoning the classic Road King laced-rim vibe. That’s a Klock Werks Bench Mark fender up front, another new-style addition maintaining the OE intent with a deep valance down the sides. A Klock Werks tinted windshield replaced the factory shield, too. Other front-end touches include smooth Hot Legs from Ness, Drag Specialties slider covers, DP Brakes rotors and a full complement of Custom Dynamics lighting – a 7-inch Trubeam headlight, Halo Black passing lamps and Flat Ringz LED turn signals. The new handlebar is a 1¼-inch Big Johnson straight out of the LA Choppers playbook while its matte-black levers, Shot

Peened grips and simple, 3-inch mirrors on 5-hole stems are all Drag Specialties. Moving back on the bike, a Drag Specialties Low Profile seat with a double-diamond stitch pattern was swapped for the original. In a nice demonstration of just how versatile these saddlebags are, a pair of Drag Specialties 4-inch extended saddlebags add a little more modern to all this classic and they fit right in. Hogtunes speaker lids were put in place with LA Choppers Fusion latch handles and hinge covers, the whole setup intensifying tunes from a Hogtunes universal handlebar audio kit. All four floorboards are from LA Choppers, with the heel/toe shifter and brake-pedal pad selected straight out of the Carl Brouhard collection.

A tinted-and-tall Klock Werks windshield and Custom Dynamics lighting lead the way. Exhaust is the *Black Chrome Eclipse by Khrome Werks.

The Road King’s stock exhaust was swapped for a full Khrome Werks Eclipse 2-into-2 system*, a steppedheader power builder with a unique black-chrome finish and big, 4-inch mufflers. That exhaust breathes a little better due to the addition of an S&S Cycle air filter kit*. The rear suspension got an upgrade, thanks to a set of AIR-A shocks from Legend Suspension. For a little brightwork and detail the 103-inch Twin Cam got 10 Gauge rocker box covers from Ness, a Custom Dynamics mini-beast horn and a Drag Specialties points cover. There’s more, all listed in the accompanying Build Sheet. Have a look for the full rundown, and spend a little time looking over these pictures. Joe Houpt and the guys at Suburban Harley-Davidson delivered a Road King fit for a king, a bike updated classically and timelessly with bolt-ons right out of the FatBook. ■

Performance Plus

2-into-1 Pipes for the 2018 Fat Bob If there was ever a Harley-Davidson in need of an exhaust swap it’s the 2018 Fat Bob, and Bassani is on the case with fitments for its popular 2-into-1 Road Rage exhaust. It’s available in mild steel and a trick-looking stainless steel.

The crew at Bassani took one look and got on the case. They cleaned up the look, significantly cut the weight and increased performance. They did it with a 2-into-1 Road Rage system designed just for this bike. Two of them, actually, because there’s a full stainless-steel version and a mild steel version with a high-temp black finish. Besides providing the clean, all-business look the Fat Bob needs, a 2-into-1 system is a proven power-builder. Bassani’s Road Rage 2-into-1s have been performance favorites for years and all that know-how went into the design of these new Fat Bob exhausts. Both versions have those stepped, equal-length Road Rage head pipes starting with a 1¾-inch diameter, and opening up to 17/8-inches before emptying into a short megaphone with a removable baffle, and an end cap with a cool, reverse-cone style.

I

f there was ever a Harley-Davidson crying out for an exhaust swap it’s the 2018 Fat Bob. Now part of the overhauled Softail range, the Fat Bob is a new model replacement for its namesake Dyna.

There’s a lot to like about this new Softail – a new lightweight frame, choices of 107 or 114 cubic inches of Milwaukee-Eight power, inverted cartridge-style forks, an adjustable mono-shock rear suspension, and a tough, chopped-back stance.

The overall look is just what the Fat Bob needs; the reduced weight pays big dividends all by itself and the systems deliver that 2-into-1 power boost. There’s a major wake-up call for the multi-valve engine on tap here. Horsepower and torque, already plentiful with a Milwaukee-Eight, get a nice performance kick. Bassani included 18mm O2 ports for wide-band tuning options. There are also 12mm adapters, plugs, heat shields and mounting hardware all included. On the stainless version those heat shields are just big enough to cover the pipes for protection, small enough to show off all the stainless steel, hand TIG welding and, as the pipes heat cycle, that gold tint performance riders love. ■

Then there’s the exhaust. The bike’s standard 2-into-2 system is massive. With oversized mufflers and bronzeTalk with your Drag Specialties rep for more information tint heat shields, there’s a lot of metal hanging off the side and check out www.bassanipipes.com. of this bike. *DISCLAIMER: NOT LEGAL FOR SALE OR USE IN CALIFORNIA ON ANY POLLUTION CONTROLLED MOTOR VEHICLES

SEATS

Seat Swapping

New Seats to Fit New Tanks All of the seats are available with Drag’s solar-reflective leather, which is featured on most of the company’s seats. The seating area is covered in the material, while the sides of each seat are made of a sturdy automotivegrade vinyl. Solar-reflective leather is produced through a patented process that reduces the surface temperature by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only is the leather much more comfortable for a rider – especially on a hot day—but the lower temperatures also extend the life of the seat.

Drag Specialties Seats has Predator models specially designed to fit the unique styling of the Paul Yaffe/Bagger Nation Razor Back fuel tank.

Both the low-profile and the Predator seats feature a mild stitch style in the solar-reflective leather, while the EZ On solo seat has a smooth stitch style. All the seats also have a suede option, which has a double-diamond stitch style across the seating area’s suede finish and automotive-grade vinyl on the sides. Something else all of these Drag seats have in common is the combination of a foam interior and a sturdy but lightweight base. The molded flexible urethane foam interior gives a rider maximum comfort and helps maintain the styling of the seat. Underneath, a heavy-gauge ABS thermoformed seat base offers a perfect fit, while a fully carpeted bottom and rubber bumpers ensure a soft fit against the bike’s frame. The EZ On solo front seat is designed to be exactly what it sounds like — a seat that installs without any hassle. The EZ Mount system means that no tools are required for taking the seat on and off. The seat covers the two seat fender studs, so it maintains a low, clean look. ■

C

ustomizing a motorcycle can often have a domino effect. Change one part, and you’re going to have to swap out something else so it all fits together properly. That was the thinking behind the new Drag Specialties Seats that fit the unique shapes of the Paul Yaffe/ Bagger Nation Razor Back tank, the Yaffe six-gallon tank, and the Arlen Ness Winged tank.

»»The rear solo seat that pairs with the EZ On style comes in either a narrow width of 6¼ inches or a wide 9¾ inches. It is also designed for easy mounting, and it works with all sissy bars.

Drag Specialties also has a number of seat models that will work with the Arlen Ness Winged gas tank.

Drag Specialties Seats has a range of seats that are designed specifically to work with those highly styled gas tanks. The lineup includes the Predator, a low-profile tour seat and the EZ On solo front seat, which can be combined with a rear solo seat.

Under Assault

New Pipes and High-Flow Filter Kits

Trask Performance’s high-flow air cleaners not only add a clean, go-fast look to the side of a bike, they are designed for max airflow thanks to their unique snap-in velocity stacks. Trask now offers more applications and finishes for the air cleaners.

A

little over a year ago Trask Performance announced its Assault Series of bolt-on hardware, which included some pretty cool high-flow air cleaners featuring snap-in velocity stacks and clear Plexiglas covers for an unobstructed view straight down that throttle body or carburetor throat. Well, that Assault Series line is now growing with the addition of new, updated applications and new cosmetic finishes for those high-flow air cleaners, and some deep-breathing Assault Series exhausts. The latter are pure-performance stainless steel 2-into-1 pipes and mufflers to complement the high-flow characteristics of those Trask intakes. Let’s start with those high-flow air cleaners. These are performers of the first order and come with snap-in velocity stacks that can accommodate different throttle body and carburetor sizes.

Now there are a whole host of expanded applications for these intakes and some new finishes. They include Reverse Cut, Polished, Chrome, Raw Machined and, in certain applications, a new, industrial looking Cerekote finish. The new fitments include 2006 through 2017 Softails, all the 2001 through 2017 Harley-Davidsons with Delphi EFI, and the 2008 and later FLHTs, FLHRs, FLHXs, FLTRs and FL Trikes. The list is too long to include here, so talk with your Drag rep and check out the FatBook for the entire range. Then there are those new Assault Series 2-into-1 exhausts. Applications here cover all the 2009 through 2017 FL models, with both straight- and kickout versions available. Trask also has Assault Series 2-into-1s for those gone-but-hardly-forgotten FXD Dyna models with midcontrols, bikes dating all the way back to 1999.

TRASK

Trask added some nice styling cues to its new Assault Series 2-into-1 exhausts. Those stubby, megaphone mufflers and wire-tied fasteners look like they’re ready for some hot laps.

These are power pipes with the look and sound you’d expect. The Assault Series 2-into-1s are made from high-quality stainless steel throughout, and are mandrel bent then TIG welded. There’s a double-slip fit and gusset for additional strength, as well as short, stubby megaphone-style mufflers. Custom heat shields with wire-tied fasteners offer an authentic, track-ready race-inspired look. For custom tuning, 18mm O2 ports are included. The whole setup is made in the USA. All of those new applications and finishes for the Assault Series high-flow air cleaners and the brand-new Assault Series 2-into-1 stainless-steel exhaust systems, are available now from Drag Specialties. ■

New to the Trask lineup, the Assault Series 2-into-1 exhausts are available for 2009 through 2017 FL models, as well as FXD Dynas going back to 1999.

This inclusive weekend doesn’t just highlight powersports products, it also offers those in attendance valuable product education and sales training from the vendors themselves. This year’s show featured dealer training from such manufacturers and Parts vendors as Biltwell, Dunlop, Icon, Klock Werks, Legend Suspensions, Metzeler, Michelin, and TechnoResearch. As this is the central event for the LeMans Corporation, the show also features the always-anticipated Night of the Stars, where the combined Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited sales forces are awarded and celebrated for a year of killer sales results. Make no mistake, this is a powerful group of reps and sales managers, and their stellar results are clear evidence of their importance to dealerships – and the vendors they represent – across the country. Given that this is the powersports industry, an event launched three years ago – the Saturday night Meet & Greet/Bike Show returned to much fanfare. In just three short years, the show, and its collection of custom bikes from Drag dealers, sales reps, vendors and LeMans employees, has emerged as one of the weekend’s more popular events. This year’s lineup included everything from ground-up custom cruisers and fully restored classic dirtbikes to an asphaltripping drag bike and an Indian Scout ice racer. Another crowd pleaser, now in its fourth year, was the Michelin Power Jam. Once again Drag and Parts reps and LeMans vendors and employees served up a healthy dose of good old rock and roll to a packed house at the nearby Majestic Theater.

T

he end of summer brings a buzz of excitement to the town of Madison, Wisconsin. The eyes of the powersports aftermarket turn their focus to the state capital – and the Monona Terrace Convention Center – for a good long look at the products and programs that will be kick-starting dealership sales for the coming riding season. The Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo offers dealers from around the country a hands-on first look at all the hot new products from more than 200 LeMans vendors. These are the very same parts, accessories, apparel, tools and equipment that will keep registers ringing come the 2018 sales season. For one dynamic weekend, the Expo serves as the epicenter of the LeMans universe as dealers, reps, vendors and LeMans support staff gather together.

The NVP serves as a welcome chance to meet face-to-face and catch up on new business, old business, favorite rides, new gear and long-held friendships. Now that calendars are quickly flipping over to 2018, Parts Unlimited dealers and vendors can look forward to one more chance to see the latest and greatest at the NVP Product Expo in Indianapolis in February before kicking off the sales season for another year.

»» Talk with your Drag rep for details about attending the 2018 Indy show. This year, attending Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties dealers entered into a contest for hourly giveaways during the show, with products from such vendors as AFX, AirHawk, Arlen Ness, Avon, Hogtunes, S&S Cycle, and Star Brite. The winners were: CLAY SOWARDS — Barely Legal Bikes, Sioux Falls, SD JASON BARRY — Motorcycle Medic, Woodbine, IA PHILIP PARKER — Alvaton Store and Garage, Alvaton, KY ERIN WHITMORE — Eastern Performance Cycle, Gambrills, MD LISA JORGENSON — Jasper Enterprises, Sioux Falls, SD RANDY ERDMAN — Flying Eagle Motorcycles, Campbellsport, WI TOM DOROSKY — American Motorcycles, St. George, UT

AUDIO SYSTEMS

Sound Levels

Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio

Wild Boar Audio is Hogtunes’ stand-alone brand of premium audio products for use on 2014 and newer Harley-Davidsons. The WBASG kit is a popular choice for Road Glides, Street Glides and Ultras.

S

ince 2005, Hogtunes has been giving HarleyDavidson riders a quality plug-and-play solution for aftermarket audio that is easy to install with average tools, sounds great at highway speeds and doesn’t strain the bike’s charging system. Now, with its Wild Boar Audio brand, Hogtunes has introduced a line of premium audio products that feature high-power, high-end audio solutions for use on 2014 and newer Harleys. While Hogtunes uses a 2-ohm design, Wild Boar Audio uses a 4-ohm design. Increased amplifier power that does not compromise the bike’s charging system, real carbon fiber speaker cones and high quality wires are a few of the points that set Wild Boar Audio apart as a premium brand. The staff at Hogtunes likens the two brands to cars: Hogtunes is the Chevy of powersports audio, while Wild Boar Audio is the Cadillac. Together, the two brands cover all major price points, and both will continue to develop new products in their respective niches.

One additional perk that Wild Boar Audio has is a generous warranty. Speakers are warrantied for a period of five years from the original purchase date to the original owner. Wild Boar Audio amplifiers are warrantied for three years. A popular Wild Boar Audio kit is the WBASG kit (p/n 44050459) for 2014 and newer Street Glides. It includes two 6.5-inch speakers and a two-channel amplifier. A version for Road Glides (p/n 4405-0483) is available, too, and the kit can be used on Ultras. On the Hogtunes side, the REV 200SG Kit-RM (p/n 4405-0354) is a kit for the same model range. It, too, has two 6.5-inch speakers and a two-channel amplifier kit. The difference, of course, is in the power, amplification, materials and price point. That means customers can choose based on their budget. Both brands offer quality products, but at two distinctly different levels. ■

»» Talk to your Drag Specialties rep about the differences between

Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio systems. You can also see full details for each brand at www.hogtunes.com and www.wildboaraudio.com.

Despite the differences, Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio still have a lot in common. All of the products are designed in-house, so this isn’t a simple rebranding that’s going on. The development team carefully engineers each system for brilliant sound in a motorcycle environment at speed. Products from both brands have been created in a way that allows the customer to add to their system over time. That means a customer can start small, and then add components like additional speakers and multiple amplifiers in the future as time and interest allow. Both brands also offer plug-and-play solutions with an emphasis on one part number to make it easy for dealers to order. 40

f there’s one thing immediately separating a mild custom job on a Harley-Davidson from a full-on makeover, it’s the gas tank. Sure, plenty of goodlooking Baggers retain their factory fuel tanks, but to really make that move away from OE, a switch to a long, swoopy, stretched-out gas tank is truly effective. The Razor Back stretched tank kit from Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation is a direct bolt-on job. There are fitments for all 2010 through 2017 Harley Touring models. Off-Season Upgrades When it’s Time For a Motor Makeover

Feuling Parts has everything necessary for a major – or minor – makeover of a motorcycle’s camchest, oiling system and valvetrain.

W

ith 2017’s riding season coming to a close for many riders, quite a few of those customers will be looking to use the downtime to upgrade their motorcycles, whether it’s a top-end rebuild or big-bore conversion.

However, swapping out barrels, pistons and rings is only half the job here. Having the engine apart is the perfect time to upgrade everything inside the camchest. And, while the cylinder heads are off, it’s also a great opportunity to replace the tired, original valve springs. At Feuling Parts, the *camshaft, camchest, oiling system and valvetrain specialists have everything needed for this also-critical part of any freshen-up session. And it’s all in the FatBook, right along with those new barrels, pistons and rings. Feuling has all these essential upgrades, the new *cams and camplates, the high-volume oil pumps, the new-design valve springs, pushrods, lifters, full conversion-kits and more. Applications cover all the Twin Cams from 1999 forward, and for those earliest TCs still running spring-loaded cam-chain tensioners, adding one of those Fueling hydraulic-tensioner conversion kits is a big upgrade. Make sure your customers know about all of this, about the advantages of digging just a little deeper into an engine makeover. When upgrades to the camchest/ oiling system/valvetrain are added to a new top-end package, the engine is going to be smoother running and cooler running. It will be quieter and, with a set of *performance cams included, more responsive, more powerful and more fun come riding season 2018. ■

A Classic Look for Modern Lighting

LED LIGHTING

Night Rider

Drag Specialties’ new premium reflector style lights feature classic styling and brilliant LED performance. The headlights come in that familiar Drag Premium Packaging, making them perfect for display and merchandizing.

O

That pattern is combined with a high output, including 706 Lumens for the low beam and 1400 Lumens for the high beam. The result is illumination that is more precise and intense than stock lights. At the same time, the lights maintain compliance for both DOT and ECE on-road use.

Drag Specialties premium reflector style lights have classic styling blended with LED performance. The three lighting options are all manufactured in the United States by LED specialists J.W. Speaker, and each one comes in display-friendly Drag Premium Packaging.

That compliance is an important piece of the puzzle. Some motorcycle owners think it is easier and more economical to simply retrofit their old headlights with LED bulbs, but doing so is outside of DOT compliance. Not only that, but LED replacement bulbs can damage the electrical systems of a motorcycle, creating even more problems to deal with.

ld-timers already sit around and tell younger riders how good they have it — modern engineering, lighter materials, better tire compounds and all the other things that make today’s motorcycles easier to ride. Another item to make that list is the LED headlight.

The headlight is available in 7-inch (p/n 2001-1334) and 5¾-inch (p/n 2001-1538) round options, and a 4½-inch round fog light (p/n 2001-1336) completes the set. The rugged aluminum housing serves two purposes. It maintains the classic reflector light styling to fit a motorcycle’s aesthetics, and it resists shock and vibration to extend the life of the lights. Inside, the LED bulb provides brilliant nighttime visibility combined with a long life of about 50,000 hours. Most riders have experienced the halo effect from standard reflector headlights, which is what happens when the light is not evenly cast across the terrain ahead. A carefully engineered beam pattern for the Drag reflector optics yields more intensity and provides evenly distributed light.

Because they are designed specifically for LEDs, the Drag Specialties lights are more effective than a retrofit. Plus, they enhance visibility, performance and safety compared to standard lights. The Drag headlights are direct replacements for stock lights, featuring easy plug-and-play installation. An H4 style connector comes with the light. Take note, though, that 2013 and older touring bikes will require a mounting ring (p/n 2001-1106) for the 7-inch headlight, and 2014 and newer touring bikes will need a wiring harness (p/n 2120-0647 or p/n 2120-0655). ■

Power Touring

Performance Parts for Baggers

F

or S&S Cycle, Proven Performance isn’t just the company motto, it’s a promise to every Harley-Davidson rider out there. The company is now offering a punch of power for the new Milwaukee-Eight bikes and earlier Touring models. New to S&S Cycle’s extensive lineup of hop-up parts is a line of performance *cams for the Milwaukee Eight bikes, and the El Dorado exhaust package, a 50-statelegal exhaust for 2009 to 2016 Touring bikes. There are four different profile-grinds from mild to wild in that Milwaukee-Eight cam lineup. For those customers happy with their bike’s performance, but who want the reliability of something that’s gear driven, there is the 350G, which has stock specs and is gear driven. Moving up in performance, there are .465-lift cams, .475 cams and .550 cams, all designed to provide power to the Milwaukee-Eight platform. These retain the OE chain drive and come as complete gear-drive conversions as well. Those big-lift .550s – both chain-drive and geardrive versions – require a performance valve-spring kit, and S&S has that, too.

S&S Cycle has a 50-state legal El Dorado exhaust package for 2009 thought 2016 Touring bikes with the Twin Cam motor.

Then there’s that 50-state legal El Dorado exhaust package, EPA and CARB compliant (EO #K-010) systems that include S&S Power Tune stainless-steel headers and a set of 4½-inch MK45 S&S mufflers fit with the latest in high-flow cat technology.

S&S Cycle also offers new MilwaukeeEight spec Quickee Adjustable Pushrods that eliminate the need to remove the rocker boxes and coolant lines, with the exception of the .550 cam and the required new valve springs. Let your customers know that S&S also has new tappets to complement those new cams, also in Milwaukee-Eight fitments. To help ease installation, the company offers Installation Kits that contain new cam bearings, gaskets, O-rings and tensioner block-off plates for gear-drive kits – everything needed for the job. When those new cams are teamed up with a proper exhaust and a free-flow air filter (both also available from S&S) and a remap for the engine-management system, those Milwaukee-Eights – both the 107 and the 114 – have responded with some pretty amazing results.

Check out the new range of high performance *cams that S&S Cycle has developed for HarleyDavidson’s Milwaukee-Eight platform.

Applications cover 2009 to 2016 Touring bikes with the Twin Cam motor. High-flow cats, relocated into the mufflers to reduce radiated heat, increase exhaust flow and provide just the right amount of back-pressure to improve both horsepower and torque. The setup features a deep and throaty tone. The systems are offered in Show Chrome or with a Black Ceramic finish, and there are two end-cap styles available, Thruster or Tracer. ■

Light Kits for Baggers

W

ith its wide range of parts and accessories, Ciro has the Bagger market covered. From fender to Tour Pak, your customers are going to find something for those bikes from Ciro inside the FatBook.

Tour Blade lighting is a low-profile light strip that mounts up on a Tour Pak. It serves as turn signals, running lights and as a center brake light.

Ciro’s Bag Blades provide a big serving of extra lighting to the rear of a Bagger.

That range is growing once again with the addition of a whole collection of lights and light kits to brighten up the back of any Bagger. The lineup includes Bag Blades, Filler Panel Lights, Tour Blades, Tour Pak Center Brake Lights, Snake Eye Kits and Tour Pak Accents. Each one is easily installed and designed to have a cool, integrated look that offers loads of better visibility out on the road. Those Bag Blades are a super clean way to add more light to the back of a bike. The pair of low-profile light housings sit right below the saddlebag lids, almost invisible and blend right in. When power is applied, they really pop. The bright LED run, brake and sequential amber turn signal lights are sure to be seen, day or night. And, it’s a plugand-play installation with no drilling. Ciro’s Filler Panel Lights brighten things up even more. Another plug-and-play installation, they really increase a bike’s rear visibility while also giving the tail end a finished, custom look. A multi-function controller provides lowintensity red running and high-intensity brake lighting with ultra-bright amber turn signals. The overall setup really stands out.

Snake Eyes light kit

New Tour Blade lighting, a low-profile light strip that mounts up at the front of the Tour Pak, neatly fit between the backrest and Tour Pak itself, adds even more light to the back of the bike. The lighting consists of bright, sequential turn signals, running lights and a center brake light. There’s also a stand-alone Center Brake Light available for Tour Pak, this one mounts along the rear, lower edge. Easily installed with 3M automotive-grade adhesive, the bezel is styled to complement all the other Ciro Tour Pak light accents, and it’s available chrome plated or gloss black to match the popular OE color. It can also be painted for a custom color match. The Snake Eyes light kits smooth the transition between backrest and Tour Pak, and feature bright red run and brake lights, as well as amber turn signals. The kit uses the proprietary Ciro lighting controller, and is a plug-and-play installation. ■

Innovative Piston Rings

Every single Wiseco Black Edition pistons comes with its own dedicated ring package, resulting in a more precise fit, better compression and improved oil control.

I

t’s no secret that many Harley-Davidson riders are looking for more power and efficiency while maintaining excellent reliability. Wiseco’s Black Edition pistons for Harley applications deliver this desired blend of performance and wear resistance. They are the result of extensive R&D on forging, machining, coatings and ring design. You may have already read about the benefits the proprietary ArmorX™ and ArmorFit™ coatings give the Black Edition pistons. However, these coatings are not the only differentiator. Ring design goes hand-in-hand with piston design, because after all, an innovative piston won’t do any good without innovative piston rings to match. Wiseco Black Edition pistons feature augmented ring land details that give each ring the required amount of room for movement to achieve improved ring seal. Each application of Black Edition pistons includes their own dedicated ring packages, meaning they do not use a onesize-fits-all approach.

Ring packs for each different part number are designed to work with the specifications of that piston, which results in a more precise fit and better compression and oil control. Wiseco even tension tests each ring design to model-specific specifications through a proprietary in-house process. Every surface of the ring grooves on Black Edition pistons are coated with ArmorX, reducing ring wear and blow-by, and almost eliminating the chance of your top ring microwelding to the ring groove. Wiseco Black Edition pistons are made in the USA, and are available for the Milwaukee-Eight, and popular Twin Cam and Rushmore applications. ■

Unveiling a Quartet of New Seats

L

ePera Motorcycle Seats showed up at the NVP Dealer Expo in Madison, WI with four new styles to show off. The seats are made with the same handcrafted, old school detail that LePera is known for, and they include the Sprocket, the Streaker, the KickFlip and the Stubs Café.

Diamond pattern Stubs Café

LePera describes the Sprocket seat as being “sinfully bobbed and chopped,” which creates ample back support. The solo seat is a bobbed version of one of LePera’s most popular 1970s designs, and that retro styling shows. Available in smooth, diamond and pleated stitching, the Sprocket fits the 2006-17 Dyna, 2004-06 XL, 2010-17 XL and 2008-17 Bagger models. While the Sprocket has a high-profile backrest, the Streaker is a low profile, stripped-down seat for 2004-06 XL, 2010-18 XL and 2008-18 Bagger models. Whether a customer opts for a smooth, diamond or pleated finish, the Streaker has simple, clean lines.

Streaker in pleated finish

Pleated Kickflip

The KickFlip has freestyle cues both inside and out. Ample back support and a wide seat are set atop LePera’s Marathon Foam for maximum stability and comfort. It fits 2006-17 Dyna and FXR models, and stitching styles include diamond, pleated, basket weave and gripper. Since the café style is still popular, it’s no surprise that LePera has an updated version of the Stubs Café solo seat for the 2016-17 Softail Slim. A tapered tail section and deep, angled back support make the seat a straightforward café option in smooth, diamond and pleated options. ■

Lightweight Boost Small Size, Big Power

Installation is easy thanks to model-specific fitments, and the dry technology utilized in the EVO3 means it can be mounted in any position. Each EVO3 battery arrives with everything necessary to keep it charged and maintained. The included EVO maintenance charger keeps the EVO battery at the perfect voltage for maximum battery life. The EVO health monitor has convenient “at a glance” indications of the battery’s voltage, and connects directly to the EVO maintenance charger. Ballistic’s EVO Power System and EVO Max Power System lithium ion batteries are lightweight, efficient and really pack a punch for big V-twin motors.

B

igger isn’t always better. That mantra rings true for Ballistic Performance Components, whose EVO Power Systems can weigh up to 15 pounds less than stock batteries. Despite the small size, the compact EVO3 battery still has enough punch to power big V-twins. The secret behind Ballistic’s EVO3 battery is a Lithium Ferrous Phosphate (LiFePO4) cell. Its characteristics make it a prime choice for powersports. They include a relatively low cost, non-toxicity, excellent thermal stability, good electrochemical performance, and high specific capacity. Instead of delving into too much technical jargon, what it all comes down to is that a LiFePO4 cell can deliver a huge amount of power over a very short time, then recover quickly so it is ready for the next use. The lithium ion technology in Ballistic’s EVO Power Systems means that the batteries are extremely durable, too. The battery has an exceptional static self-charge rate of less than 10 percent per 12-month period. The LiFePO4 cells are housed in heat-resistant cases. The solid copper connectors and custom terminals are specifically designed for powersports applications.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2017

Thanks to the materials and dry technology utilized in the EVO3 battery, it is nontoxic and recyclable. That makes disposable easier than a traditional battery. For customers who live in cold environments, or have high-performance modifications on their motorcycles, a little extra boost might be required. EVO Max Power Systems feature batteries with higher burst cranking amps. Nearly all of the applications available from Drag Specialties include both the standard EVO Power System and an EVO Max Power System option. Although Ballistic’s lithium ion batteries were developed for use in a racing environment, the products offer benefits that reach far beyond that niche of the powersports industry.

“The light weight of Ballistic’s EVO batteries help with acceleration, handling and gas mileage on any vehicle, whether it’s for the street or racing,” says Ballistic Performance Components owner Chip Spalding. “Additionally, our EVO batteries are rated at 2,000 discharge cycles versus 600 for a lead acid battery, so an EVO battery has a life expectancy about 2½ times longer than a traditional battery.” ■
