s you read this, it’s likely to be only a month until Drag Specialties’ biggest trade event of the year, the 2017 NVP Product Expo at Lake Monona in Madison, WI. Just up the road from the LeMans Corporation headquarters in Janesville, the NVP has grown significantly from when the company used to have a meeting there for selected vendors to show new products to the Drag sales reps. As is usually the case with things that work well, it got bigger and bigger every year. More vendors, more reps and some time added to let local dealers come have a look. Then came the move to the Monona Terrace exposition center where the event will be held again this year. Now lots of room for vendors and a full-scale dealer trade show, done the LeMans way. 2017 NVP Product Expo will be held August 26-27. If you are serious about the motorcycle business, this is an event you need to be at. Many of your fellow V-twin retailers will be flying in from all corners of the United States and even other countries. To get you up to speed, this issue has a whole section showing many of the Drag vendors and products you will see at the show. If you aren’t signed up yet, get with your Drag sales rep today!

One of the features of the NVP Product Expo in Madison is the Meet & Greet where attending dealers can relax and talk to other retailers, reps and vendors. Photo by Kinney Jones border into Baja, Mexico. This year the event drew more than 1,000 riders! Be sure to see how their personal interaction with customers has gone a long way to creating a small army of motorcyclists who spread good words about the Biltwell product line.

Also in this issue you can learn more about MagnaFlow, the giant maker of aftermarket exhaust systems. They are huge in the automotive business and now are using their technology and manufacturing know-how to supply their world famous brand to the motorcycle business through Drag Specialties. I went along myself for the factory tour and was really impressed. Check it out. So you say, “Yes, we put on some rides for our customers.” Well, be sure to read the story starting on page 18 about this year’s El Diablo Run. Biltwell’s co-founders Bill Bryant and Harold McGruther (just call him McGoo) started an annual ride for their customers back in 2006. They got 47 of them to go along from Southern California south across the

Two, yes two bike build stories in this issue. Check out the Drag Specialties FatBook Cover Bike, another in the series of cool builds from Joe Houpt and the crew at Suburban Harley-Davidson. This month, it’s a sweet looking 2016 Road Glide Special. You’ll find it on page 22, with a full build sheet of course. Then on page 74 you can read all about Shane Gatto’s Hot Rod Dyna project. Hope to see you in Madison!

H

ot rod pioneer Vic Edelbrock Jr., whose vision and drive helped build the high-performance aftermarket company founded by his father, died in June. He was 80 years old.

“It’s with deep sadness that we announce the untimely death of our visionary leader and industry icon Vic Edelbrock Jr.,” read a post on Edelbrock Performance’s Facebook page. “His passing was peaceful and in the company of his closest friends and family.” Born in Los Angeles in 1936, Edelbrock Jr. grew up around his father’s automotive repair business. He was only 26 when his father passed away at the early age of 49, leaving Edelbrock to assume the position of chairman and president of Edelbrock Corporation. Under his guidance, Edelbrock grew into a multi-million dollar corporation and an industry pioneer in automotive performance for racecars and streetcars. An avid racing enthusiast, he began with racing boats and in later years he started racing a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray and a 1969 302 Boss Mustang at vintage races throughout the United States. He regularly attended several events a year to stay close to his customers, car enthusiasts, and racers. It was philosophy that was very important to him. A founding member of the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association (which eventually became the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association) in 1963, Edelbrock served as the president of SEMA from 1970-74, in addition to serving on the SEMA Board of Directors from 1967 to 1989. He was a member of the SEMA Hall of Fame, International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame, and the recipient of many honors and awards.

oung builders and artists who have been inspired by the styling of previous generations will be creating new works that reflect the attitude and attributes of the present in the Buffalo Chip’s 2017 Motorcycles as Art exhibit, “Old Iron/Young Blood; Motorcycles and the Next-Gen,” curated by famed motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter. Forty builders under 36 years of age have accepted the challenge to build a custom masterpiece especially for this exhibit at the Buffalo Chip’s Event Center. Creating an exhibition themed around the next generation of builders and bikes ensures an incredibly diverse offering, from café racers to street trackers to old school choppers and modern customs. The bikes include everything from a new BMW R nine T and 2016 Indian Scout, to a 1929 Harley-Davidson JD “Speedster” and 1962 Panhead chopper. Some builders, such as Matt Olsen, Matt Walksler, Zach Johnson and Zach Ness, grew up in their own family’s motorcycle businesses, while others came into building when they were older, eventually starting their own commercial shops. Still others have day jobs and work on their bikes in home garages in what waking hours they have left.

“The 40 builders and 14 two-dimensional artists will come together as 53 creatives to examine just what this generation is interested in, what they are capable of and what is coming around the bend,” said exhibit curator Michael Lichter. “In addition to an age limit on the builder, each bike must be a new build completed within a few months of the show opening and many of the bikes will be unveiled for the first time at the exhibition.” ■

EL DIABLO RUN 2017: RUNNIN’ BREAKING FOR BAJA WITH THE BILTWELL BOYS B y H a ro l d “ M c G o o” M c G r u t h e r / Photos by Geoff Kowalchuk/Biltwell Inc.

There’s a saying in Baja: “Good roads bring bad people, bad roads bring good people.” No time is this more true than on Mother’s Day weekend in San Felipe, Mexico.

A

mong Millennial bike riders either too cynical, or too frugal, to even consider hitting a mega rally like Sturgis or Daytona, Southern California’s El Diablo Run has become the archetype against which all modern grassroots motorcycle adventures are judged. Launched in 2006 by Biltwell cofounders Bill Bryant and Harold “McGoo” McGruther to showcase their brand to a new breed of home builder and motorcycle enthusiast, the first El Diablo Run saw 47 men and women make the trip down to San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico for a long spring weekend of fish tacos and cold beer in the hot Mexican sun. The next two El Diablo Runs were annual affairs, with the headcount blossoming to over 250 riders in 2008.

After reaching that benchmark, Bryant and McGruther took a break from future EDR planning to concentrate on their day jobs at Biltwell. All the time the number of EDR participants was growing, so too was the event’s popularity, especially among tech-savvy motorcyclists who shared their experiences on social media.

EDR founders have preached a credo of total selfreliance since their event’s inception in 2006. Those who fail to plan invariably plan to fail. In a word, the El Diablo Run is tough.

WITH THE DEVIL Ruben’s Camp is a sleepy palapa hut hostel in San Felipe, and has hosted every EDR since day one.

Search #EDR on Instagram and you’ll see evidence of that. In three short years between 2006 and 2008, the El Diablo Run grew into a popular and inspirational grassroots event for a growing generation of motorcyclists. The Biltwell crew re-launched the ride in 2011 as EDR IV. With that resurrection came an interesting shift in what constituted a custom motorcycle of the day.

Aaron Mason – @aaronmason81 on Instagram – is the quintessential El Diablo runner: 100 percent self-made, self-reliant and self-aware. A truly committed chopperazzi.

While the El Diablo Run has always been a showcase for Big Twin choppers — everything from daily-rider Knuckleheads to show-quality Panheads and Shovelhead shop mules — the EDR parking lot in 2011also featured an eclectic range of late-model Sportsters from mild to wild in terms of stance, fabrication and pedigree.

For those DIY builders who rightly viewed the EDR as the ultimate shakedown for their handcrafted motorcycles, Bryant and McGruther agreed in 2013 to host all future runs on odd years. Twenty-seventeen marked the seventh running of the devils from Biltwell HQ in Temecula, CA, to Ruben’s Camp in San Felipe, with nearly 1,000 riders committing to the adventure.

El Diablo Run organizers introduced a new twist on old chopper yard games a few years ago. The co-ed slow race with dudes riding shotgun is a crowd favorite. Biltwell product manager Erik Westergaard is a two-time winner.

For a motorcycle event quite literally born in a raging sea of social media, EDR VII’s flooding of Instagram following this year’s even surprised no one. Two weeks after the last bike rolled out of San Felipe, more than 2,700 #EDR2017 hashtagged pics were posted on the popular photo-sharing app. Add this to the nearly 30,000 #EDR photos that have been posted on Instagram since the event’s birth and you can begin to appreciate the impact this underground chopper ride has had on the Biltwell brand, and why the company works so hard to ensure its success.

You would be hard pressed to spend more than $25 per day on food during the El Diablo Run. Al Pastor is a favorite among chopper freaks and locals alike.

This year’s motorcycle antics were dusty, hot and slightly dangerous. Fortunately, that’s just the way competitors and spectators like it.

Via con Dios, Amigos!

Asked to explain El Diablo Run’s status and allure, McGruther says, “Conventional biker rally tomfoolery — wet T-shirt contests, $10 longneck beers, freedom-rock cover bands, that sort of thing — have little to no lasting appeal for modern motorcycle enthusiasts. Bill and I conceived the EDR 12 years ago to give men and women a challenging two-wheeled adventure where the people are real and the experiences are memorable. Do these things and you’ll have friends—and customers—for life.” The Customer Experience has always been a pillar in Biltwell’s success, and the company invests much time and treasure to build a sense of family among end users and followers alike. Nowhere is this more evident than on the El Diablo Run.

EL DIABLO RUN 2017

Anyone interested in counting helmets that passed through the gates of Ruben’s Camp this year would soon realize an overwhelming number were Biltwell. Ditto handlebars, foot pegs and grips. The Biltwell co-founders might have conceived their El Diablo Run as a tool for building their brand, but it has clearly morphed into much more. Depending on whom you ask, the El Diablo Run is a life goal, a vacation, a death wish or some combination of all three. For friends and partners McGruther and Bryant, it is the gritty and abrasive, yet ”... magic,” dust in their eclectic bag of brandbuilding tricks. ■ Riding the ragged countryside of Baja California is something that needs to be experienced in person.

Many a Diablo Runner has witnessed the beautiful sunrises over the Sea of Cortez after a night of fiesta con hombres.

2016 FLTRX ROAD GLIDE Proof positive that custom doesn’t have to be wild to work. Even the paint is OE on this one. It’s the FatBook bolt-ons that make the difference.

ometimes less works out to be more. That’s true in a lot of things and certainly true when it comes to choosing parts and a theme for a custom HarleyDavidson.

Need proof? Just look at this one, as cool a Road Glide Special as you’ll find, and there’s no wild paint, no distracting graphics, no overload of chrome or billet. There’s nothing screaming out for attention, taking away from the clean, basic coolness of the bike. It’s a custom, no doubt about that, but it’s a custom with a light touch in all the right places.

Joe Houpt and the crew at Suburban Harley-Davidson’s race shop are no strangers to customs, and definitely no strangers to what’s possible with the FatBook as a parts source. Over the years plenty of Drag Specialties customs have rolled out of their Thiensville, WI shop. Some pretty wild ones, too. “But this time we dialed things way back,” Houpt says. “We went with a clean and simple look for everything and, honestly, I think it turned out great.”

Arlen Ness 10 Gauge derby cover, top transmission cover and hydraulic clutch actuator team up with Covingtons Dimpled rocker boxes adding bolt-on style to the engine.

With a 2016 Road Glide Special pulled from the Suburban Motors stock, the first change made to the Superior Blue Harley was a wheel-and-tire swap, always a good move. This one was made easier than ever with the FatBook’s new Coastal Moto wheel-and-tire package, a combination of those good-looking Largo 3Ds with the Metzeler ME888s already mounted. Drag/Hotop fender-to-fork adapters made room for the 21-incher under the stock front fender and Ness 14-inch Big Brake floating rotors with Hawg Halters calipers finished the picture. Continuing the factory’s blue paint down onto the fork lowers was a nice touch, too. Up top, control-central got the full Klock Werks treatment with a 9-inch Dark Smoke Flare windshield, pullback Klip Hanger

handlebars, a Klock Werks/Kicker Audio Fit Kit and Dynamat sound control matting. Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation Racing hand levers and Joker Machine mirrors joined the party, too. Easy does it all the way, and overall a nice bang for the buck. Of course the big blue Special’s engine got a facelift, neatly dressed with an assortment of Ness 10 Gauge covers, a Deep Cut air cleaner* and a pair of Dimpled Rocker Boxes from the Covingtons collection. S&S Powertune Duals with Race Tour mufflers* also made the cut. The bike’s all-day-comfortable and good-looking seating comes via a Saddlemen Dominator solo and pillion. High Performance, Low Emissions The Future of Aftermarket Exhaust

The El Dorado system is S&S Cycle’s MK 45 muffler/ header package for 20092016 Harley-Davidson Touring bikes. The system is legal in all 50 states.

A

fter several years of intensive development and testing, S&S Cycle recently announced its new El Dorado 50-state-legal exhaust systems for Harley-Davidson Touring models.

This is the company’s first fully CARB and EPA compliant performance system (header and muffler combination) and a strong indication of what’s to come. “At heart we are a performance company, but we also have a clear understanding of what it will take to deliver performance parts going forward,” states Paul Devine, VP of Sales. Making power has always been S&S Cycle’s focus, and the El Dorado system represents just that. Beginning with a stainless steel high flow header manufactured in their La Crosse, WI facility, and a substantial amount of dyno and ride testing, S&S established a baseline power expectation for both the Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight baggers. “Tuning a header to flow well was the easier part of the equation for our team. Designing a catalyst to match it was where the hard work came in,” says Scott Sjovall, VP of Product Development. A clean sheet design involved many months of experimenting with substrates, coatings and locations to best optimize power while still managing emissions. S&S Cycle has its own in-house emissions lab and, both its development and its emissions teams worked diligently on this project. This effort bore a unique cat-in-muffler arrangement that moves the heat away from the riders and allows for a higher flowing catalyst. “Balancing emissions compliance with gains in horsepower and torque is a tough goal, but I’m really happy with the results and the system sounds great as well,” Sjovall says.

S&S Cycle has its own in-house emissions lab where the high-flow catalyst for the El Dorado system was tested and developed.

The end result is the El Dorado system, a 50-state legal MK 45 muffler/header package for 2009-2016 Touring bikes. It includes a stainless steel Power Tune header and a set of 4½-inch MK45 mufflers that are fitted with the company’s newly developed high-flow catalytic technology. The only visible indicator of the unique contents of this system is the laser engraved CARB E.O. K-010 number on the muffler tip. These magical numbers are what it takes to sell performance exhaust in California and many other states. All your customers have to do is simply bolt up the system — no tuning necessary — turn the key, hit the throttle and feel the difference. That header/muffler combination provides the performance trifecta many V-twin riders are looking for; increased torque, a boost in horsepower, and an authoritative exhaust note that sings the song of the road. The new El Dorado system is available in show chrome or a ceramic black finish, with two end cap styles available, the Thruster or the Tracer. The O2 sensor location matches the stock setup, allowing for optimized engine monitoring, and included adapters allow you to use wide band or stock narrow band O2 sensors. ■

L

ighting up a Road Glide just got easier — and a lot brighter — with new headlights, windshield trim and turn signals from Custom Dynamics. The new accessories join a list of the company’s Road Glide options that are already available through Drag Specialties. All three of the new Road Glide products feature LEDs for longevity and brightness, and all of the company’s LED products are designed to work on 12V systems. Custom Dynamics offers a lifetime warranty against LED failure. The Road Glide LED amber/white front turn signals replace the stock bullet housings with a low-profile turn signal. Daytime running lamps are built-in for extra visibility. The turn signals are available in chrome or gloss black, and they arrive with all necessary mounting hardware

The Road Glide LED amber/ white windshield trim is a perfect complement to the turn signals and adds even more visibility to the front of the motorcycle. The low-profile design has super bright LEDs that function as white daytime running lamps, which turn off when the amber LED turn signal is activated. The plug-and-play windshield trim arrives with all mounting hardware. Like the turn signals, chrome and gloss black are the available housing finishes. The Tru-BEAM headlights from Custom Dynamics are a popular choice for a variety of models, and that now includes the Road Glide. The lights offer superior light output, with three low beam LEDs, two high beam LEDs and an optional hi-low adapter that allows all of them to be illuminated at the same time. There is an optional integrated LED halo that adds additional style and brightness. The high-efficiency lightweight design is the same size as the stock headlights, so no trim ring is required, and the durable polycarbonate lens protects against hazards encountered along the road. The housing is available in chrome or black chrome. Tru-BEAM headlights meet DOT specifications and have a built-in H4 connector and halo wire. An H4 adapter will be required for the Road Glide applications, which is also available from Drag Specialties. For customers who want to brighten up the backside of their Road Glide, Drag Specialties carries LED taillights by Custom Dynamics. The taillight unit has 120 Genesis II super bright dual intensity LEDs in a low-profile lens. The lens color options are red or smoke, and like other Custom Dynamics products, the taillights are a plug-and-play design. It should be noted, though, that the taillights are not compatible with the Road Glide Ultra. ■

Tru-BEAM headlights offer superior light output and are the same size as the stock headlight.

Special Edition

Pro Skateboarder Greg Lutzka’s Signature Pipe

The Greg Lutzka signature exhaust from Bassani is a dyno-proven winner in power, looks, performance and sound.

H

ere’s a set of pipes aimed straight at that fastgrowing pack of next generation riders. It’s a stainless steel, upswept 2-into-1 with a megaphone muffler with Dyna applications going back to 1991.

for power, the head pipes are stepped, 1¾ inches opening up to 1 7/8 inches before coming together into the collector and megaphone-style muffler.

The latest Bassani creation, the Greg Lutzka signature exhaust, is over-the-top cool and a special-edition piece. It’s available now and the Drag Specialties has it (p/n 1800-2135.)

That muffler, incidentally, features Greg Lutzka’s signature logo and a removable baffle and end cap. The system has the short, upswept style that not only looks great, but also provides gobs of ground clearance. The stepped, Tig-welded head pipes are equal length here, another design feature that results in a significant performance boost.

If the name Greg Lutzka and his connection to HarleyDavidson and Bassani sounds familiar it should. A Harley-Davidson sponsored pro skateboarder with attitude, Lutzka has been running the Bassani 1D5250B pipe on his Street Bob and Lowrider for years.

Put it all together and the Greg Lutzka Special Edition is a whole lot more than just a novelty pipe cross branding. This is the real deal, a dyno-proven winner in power, looks, performance and sound. It even comes with a signed poster, a sticker sheet and a Greg Lutzka hat.

A performance-building/stepped-header 2-into-1 system with a stubby 4-inch megaphone muffler and a great tone, that pipe was perfect to handle Lutzka’s freespirited riding style. This Special Edition exhaust takes all that – looks, sound and performance – and folds it into a must-have package.

As cool as all this is don’t forget about all those other 2-into-1 systems Bassani has for the Dynas. Bassani’s Road Rage, Road Rage II and Road Rage III are all popular pipes for a Dyna, Harley-Davidson’s hot-rod motorcycle. ■

The Lutzka Special Edition is a 2-into-1 that’s crafted from 304-grade stainless steel. And, true to that Bassani quest

»» The systems fit most models from 1991 and on with both mid-

and forward-controls, and there are short megaphones, long megaphones, finish options and more. All this is now available so talk with your Drag rep. Get more info at www.bassanipipes.com.

Lane Splitter

Top Fuel Styling, Radical Comfort

T

here’s big news from Biltwell again. The Lane Splitter is their first helmet to receive both U.S. DOT and ECE R22.05 safety certifications. Both standards involve subjecting a helmet to violent forces across a range of impact angles and velocities. Sophisticated machinery collects data from these tests to determine the helmet’s ability to reduce these forces to improve the rider’s chance of surviving a crash. The EU’s ECE R22.05 is widely regarded as the highest safety standard for motorcycle helmets in the world. Creating one new helmet that does it all wasn’t easy, and took Biltwell’s product team and OEM factory years of R&D to get right. If early high praise on social media is a barometer of success, Biltwell’s new Lane Splitter

Biltwell helmets are hand painted, with some finishes like this Bronze Metallic receiving up to six base, flake, color and clear coats during production. The results are evident, and contribute significantly to the high-quality vibe that imbues every Biltwell product.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

With styling inspired by ’80s top fuel drag racers, the Lane Splitter’s advancements in fit, comfort and safety take Biltwell headgear into a whole new direction. To meet ECE and DOT safety standards, the Lane Splitter had to be tough. To clear the brand’s own high bar for all-day riding comfort, it had to be light. To merge these opposing traits into one helmet, Biltwell relied on some tried-and-true material and manufacturing technologies — an injection-molded ABS outer shell for durability, expanded polystyrene foam safety liner for impact absorption, and the softest hand-stitched fleece Lycra comfort liner in the game.

Flat Titanium is an enduring staple in Biltwell’s quiver of colorways, and has appeared on every helmet in the brand’s line. Plenty of your customers will find the Lane Splitter in this shade particularly appealing.

American bike riders jumped onto the tough guy style of the Lane Splitter as soon as Biltwell dropped it on a ravenous audience of wheelie-popping Dyna riders and other hooligan-style riders.

Biltwell’s target market for the Lane Splitter comprises fearless 20- and 30-somethings who grew up riding motocross and watching Sons of Anarchy on TV. Bike riders in this emerging demographic aren’t scared, and want everyone to know it. The Lane Splitter speaks loud and clear.

Of course, the latter is removable for cleaning and replacement, and features mesh pockets in the cheek pads for aftermarket sound/communication speaker systems. Other features include a scratch-resistant molded polycarbonate shield with anodized aluminum hinge hardware, removable chin spoiler under the chin bar to redirect airflow, and ample front, side and rear venting to dissipate moisture when the action gets hot. The Lane Splitter by Biltwell is available now in seven racy colors — Flat Black, Bronze Metallic, Gloss Black, Gloss White, Flat Silver, Gloss Blood Red, and Flat Titanium—in XS through XXL sizes. ■

Wheel and Tire Packages

With the new Coastal Moto Largo 3D/Metzeler wheel/tire package, your customers get a convenient custom upgrade. Just balance, add rotors, pulleys and the cush drive and they’re ready to mount.

T

here’s no quicker route to a custom HarleyDavidson than a set of custom wheels. There’s no denying that impact, and there’s no ignoring the cost, either. However, Coastal Moto has already taken much of the sting out of that purchase with its Largo 3D wheels. The Largo 3Ds, the industry’s only custom-cast wheels, are as affordable as they are good looking. Offered in two of the most popular sizes, a 21 x 3.5 front and an 18 x 5.5 rear and with two finish options, Chrome and Black Cut, at $899.95 each complete with bearings and valve stems installed they’re a heck of a deal. Applications cover 2008 through 2017 FLHT, FLHR and FLHX fronts, and 2009 through 2017 rears. The wheels accept stock Harley-Davidson lug-mount brake rotors, cush-drives and pulleys, and they’re available with intelligent ABS bearings so they’ll work with linked brake models without any ABS re-calibration or added modules. The Largo 3Ds have turned heads from the start, and all this just got even better. It’s a safe bet that anyone changing wheels is also shopping for the tires to go on them. Coastal Moto now has that covered, too. Those cool looking and affordable Largo 3Ds are now available with the new tires already mounted. These aren’t just any tires, either, they’re Metzeler ME888 Marathon Ultras, those high-mileage tires designed specifically for custom touring applications. The front tire

THE DRAG SPECIALTIES PART NUMBERS FOR THESE WHEEL/TIRE COMBOS IS AS FOLLOWS: • p/n 0305-0519 for the 21-inch front setup • p/n 0306-0533 for the 18-inch rear Coastal Moto’s Largo 3D/Metzeler packages add up to big-time savings in both time and money for everyone involved. They are also an easy and convenient way to go. First of all, those tires needed for the new wheels are already there, mounted, aired-up and ready to go. And, because they’re already mounted, there’s no worry about scratching up a brand-new wheel. You will, however, have to add the rotors, the pulley and balance the setup. Rare indeed is the Harley rider who doesn’t want custom wheels. Coastal Moto and the Largo 3Ds put that wish into most any rider’s budget with this one-tire, wheel-tire combo. And keep your eyes peeled because there’s more coming soon from Coastal Moto. It’s the Atlantic 3D, another new multi-spoke, cast-wheel design and it, too, will be available in all those cool Coastal Moto finishes and in the same 21-inch and 18-inch sizes as the Largo 3D. In fact, those brand-new Atlantics should be hitting the Drag Specialties warehouses as you’re reading this. Stay tuned. ■

rom the outside, MagnaFlow’s Oceanside, CA headquarters could be any other corporate warehouse business — one big tilt-up concrete building among a sea of other tilt-up concrete buildings. The kind you see in business complexes across the country. However, once you step inside the company’s massive lobby, the scene changes dramatically, Drag Specialties Magazine learned during a recent factory visit. In a modern industrial space framed by three stories of glass-walled offices, lies an impressive showcase of MagnaFlow’s extensive go-fast, high-performance product lineup. Anyone with even a passing interest in hot-rods, most forms of racing, off-road trucks, and Jeeps — pretty much anything with four wheels — knows the MagnaFlow name. Now, the same company that’s so well known in the automotive exhaust aftermarket is taking aim at the V-twin motorcycle space with a lineup of high-quality, detail-rich and performance-minded exhausts.

“Having such an established product line, and a popular brand in the automotive space, the family ownership of MagnaFlow feels that the future growth for the company is within the motorcycle market,” says Chris McGee, director of MagnaFlow’s Motorcycle Division. “We’re here to produce innovative products and get as many riders as possible excited about installing and upgrading to MagnaFlow exhaust products today. Along with our strategic sales partners, LeMans Corporation and Drag Specialties, we’re really establishing a cornerstone for long-term growth and sustainability.” Innovation and performance have been the name of the game since Gennaro “Jerry” Paolone founded the company in 1981. An Italian immigrant to the U.S., Paolone’s is a classic example of a great American success story. This first-generation American saw a void in the automotive aftermarket, jumped in and built the company known today as MagnaFlow.

In 2016, the company jumped onto the scene with its proprietary MagnaFlow branded line. There is now a broad range of head pipes, full systems and slip-ons for Touring bikes, Softails, Dynas and Sportsters.

Magna Flow is looking to carve out its own niche of the crowded exhaust market with a line of products that’s backed by their 35 years of experience. It’s a history built around the company’s hardcore commitment to extensive R&D work, high-quality materials, innovative design, eyecatching styling and signature sound.

MagnaFlow may produce some highly styled exhaust systems, but all that performance starts at the dyno.

MagnaFlow’s Chris McGee explains how the company uses stainless steel head pipes on all of its exhaust systems

COMPANY PROFILE

“All of our head pipes, whether for Sportsters or Touring bikes, are stainless steel,” McGee explains. “It’s a major benefit to offer that on every system we produce. Our attention to detail is superb; the more you look at our pipes, the more you will notice that the devil really is in the details. We do a lot of high quality work on even the little features. That’s what produces a great overall product.”

42

“With new product development, we have a lot of R&D tools at our disposal,” he says. “We have top-tier engineers and fabricators who know what today’s motorcyclists need. They come up with innovative design and technologies that help the exhausts perform better and enhance the overall riding experience.” McGee explains that MagnaFlow also puts a great deal of focus on how the products are packaged and shipped. Not only does this allow for more efficient shipping, but the special clear skim pack also makes the exhaust easier to display and helps increase the “wow factor” when the customer receives the products.

The lineup of features doesn’t just stop at appearance. MagnaFlow’s long history in the high-end exhaust market is now being put to work with the V-twin exhausts. The company’s manufacturing capabilities include high-tech 3D modeling and rapid prototyping they can employ to create new designs or help improve existing products. Any upgrades or running changes can easily be incorporated into the existing product lineup.

The idea, he adds, is to let the consumers know right from the beginning that they’re getting something different with MagnaFlow.

All of these processes — including the company’s in-house catalytic converter lab — are housed in two massive buildings in Oceanside; one is more than 300,000 square feet, and the other 120,000 square feet. The facility even stocks all the necessary raw materials, including the steel tubing that the company buys by the mile.

The facility even stocks all the necessary raw materials, including the steel tubing that the company buys by the mile.

MagnaFlow’s entire manufacturing capabilities are vertically integrated starting from the design and R&D work right onto packaging and shipping. This allows it to maintain high levels of quality control over every single exhaust product that leaves the building.

Now two years into its V-twin motorcycle efforts, MagnaFlow is not slowing down. It continues to push the boundaries with new styles of exhaust systems and slip-ons, all of which are held to the same high standards that made MagnaFlow such a well-known commodity in the automotive world.

“It’s not just brand XYZ making some motorcycle exhausts,” McGee says. “This is MagnaFlow know how, MagnaFlow quality and MagnaFlow performance. It’s definitely a gamechanging opportunity.” ■

Better Fuel Systems Through Science because the surface of the molecule is isolated from bonding with other water or ethanol molecules. Sexy science talk aside, what that means is no rust, no freezing and no interference with fuel injectors or carburetors because the water molecules are too small and too isolated from each other to oxidize, form ice crystals or affect engine performance. Helix 5in1 can be used in any gasoline engine, including 2-strokes, 4-strokes, cars, trucks and even lawn equipment. In old, stale fuel, Helix 5in1 effectively reverses phase separation, where water has bonded with the ethanol in fuel. Helix 5in1 applied to fresh fuel prevents phase separation from ever happening in the first place. Helix 5in1 has a wealth of other benefits, too. In the performance category, independent dyno testing showed a 3 percent horsepower gain from an octane boost of two points and increased mileage for a gallon of gas. The additive also has specialized detergents to remove deposits in the fuel system. Additionally, Helix 5in1 lubricates engine components and helps to protect and revitalize seals and gaskets. Used regularly, Helix 5in1 offers increased performance, fuel economy and protection from water contamination. It can also be used periodically to clean out a fuel system or to improve starting and renew gas. One of the most effective uses of Helix 5in1 is when a vehicle is going to be in storage, where water contamination can be a problem from naturally occurring condensation and humidity. The recommended dose of Helix 5in1 for ongoing performance and fuel stabilization is ½ ounce per gallon of fuel for a year of fuel stability. A double-strength dose is recommended for long-term storage of a vehicle.

The Helix 5in1 fuel additive from Helix Racing Products combats water contamination and has multiple benefits for a fuel system, including increased performance and fuel economy.

S

cience is pretty cool, especially when it is applied to a product that makes a powersports vehicle perform better. The Helix 5in1 fuel additive from Helix Racing Products combats water contamination and has multiple benefits for a fuel system, and it is exclusively available to Drag Specialties dealers. Helix 5in1 prevents water buildup and phase separation in fuel tanks with a proprietary formula that emulsifies water — any water in the fuel is broken down to the molecular level. The water is then unable to form droplets

Helix Racing Products says that the most successful dealers sell Helix 5in1 by first integrating it into their service work. A vehicle that is in for service will get a dose of Helix 5in1 if it will be in the service area for at least an overnight stay. The cost of the fuel treatment is added to the service ticket and the benefits are explained to the customer. When the customer is sent home with their own bottle of Helix 5in1, that translates to future visits to the dealer when they need to restock. ■

accessories on the bike is easy. Since the speakers are designed specifically for OEM factory speaker cabinets, the swap is especially simple.

Hogtunes focuses on designing quality, reliable audio products that can be easily installed, can be heard well at highway speeds and do not ever damage a bike’s charging system. The high-power, high-end Wild Boar Audio systems feature a 4-Ohm design, a change from the 2-Ohm design utilized in other Hogtunes products. By raising the impedance of the speakers, the power of the amplifiers is increased while still keeping the current demand low enough to prevent damage to a bike’s charging system.

The oversized magnets (2.2 lbs. each) on each speaker offer 50 percent more cooling than other designs, so high-power listening on a long ride is no problem. The 1.25-inch titanium tweeter is housed in a custom cup that virtually eliminates unwanted sound reflections. Studio grade components are also used throughout the high-power passive crossover.

The new Wild Boar Audio kits from Hogtunes are a complete plug-and-play system that provides high-end sound to 2015 and newer Road Glides.

The Wild Boar Audio kit is a complete plug-and-play system so riders can spend more time on the bike instead of waiting around for a lengthy installation. (Note, though, that the kit may require a radio software “re-flash” from a TechnoResearch or OE dealer.) The kit has a 400-watt, two-channel Class D front amplifier that easily clips inside the fairing just under the radio. The 6.5-inch speakers feature real carbon fiber woofer cones and no corporate logo on the speaker grills so that they maintain a low-key look. The kit includes black and chrome trim rings for the grills so matching other

The company designs audio products specifically for motorcycles, drawing from years of experience in the automotive audio industry. The Precision Collection Making Over the Milwaukee-Eight

Dress up the new Milwaukee-Eight with Kuryakyn’s Precision collection.

“When we got our first look at the new Milwaukee-Eight, we knew this was going to be an incredible opportunity and journey for our team,” said Michael Bates, Kuryakyn industrial design manager. “The entire Kuryakyn Product Development group played a role in all phases of creating the Precision collection, and we’re incredibly proud to see this line of parts hit the market.” Precision covers and accents showcase modern and muscular designs to deliver a truly defined appearance that emulates internal movements of the engine and transmission. The resulting look produces a seamless integration with every factory component, whether used individually or as a complete set. “Historically we designed our engine chrome components to be used together,” said Kenny Ladoucer, Kuryakyn category manager. “If you didn’t buy a certain piece, it looked like something was missing. The Precision system is different in that each part can be integrated independently, pieced together over time, or used to target specific areas of the motor to create a visual impact.” From the beginning Kuryakyn engineers designed all Precision components to serve as an extension of the Milwaukee-Eight’s design language. “Kuryakyn has an established reputation for developing engine covers,” said Bates. “We paid close attention to the original inspiration behind the engine design, and then pinpointed opportunities to make the look more complete. What we added incorporates the same muscular styling cues found throughout the engine.”

I

t doesn’t happen often, but when Harley-Davidson releases a new engine, it sends the aftermarket industry into a frenzy. When the Motor Company introduced the Milwaukee-Eight powerplant last August, the race to develop new products was on. Kuryakyn is no stranger to this game. As soon as the Wisconsin-based outfit got its hands on one of the new eight-valve models it got to work dissecting, scanning, and drafting all-new designs to enhance the motor’s appearance. The result is the stunning Precision collection, now available through Drag Specialties.

48

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

The collection includes groupings of unique covers and accents that bring the same powerful appearance to overlooked areas of the engine block. Focus areas include the cylinder base, inner primary, tappet block, transmission and starter, as well as the voltage regulator, coolant pump and/or oil cooler, among others. Everything in the Precision line is bolt on, creating a more uniform aesthetic with the motor and reducing the hassle around performing engine maintenance. Most components are currently offered in chrome, with select parts also available in black. ■

TIRES

Ride Ready Rubber

Fire Up Sales with the Scorcher Line

Michelin’s Scorcher tires come as the OE tires for a wide range of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, including the Electra Glide and Street models.

M

ore than one million – that’s quite a number! That’s how many Michelin Scorcher tires have rolled out of the factory on new HarleyDavidson motorcycles. It started back in 2007 when Michelin and Harley-Davidson began work on this line of co-developed and co-branded tires. Over the years hundreds of thousands of riders have had Scorchers fit as original equipment on their Sportster, V-Rod, Street and Dyna motorcycles, and since the Scorcher is also Harley-Davidson’s approved replacement tire for some Softails, and most of the popular touring bikes, you can add those riders to the ranks familiar with these Michelins. There’s even a special-design Scorcher version custom engineered for the Fat Bob, so factor that one in, too. Given all this it’s no wonder that plenty of Harley riders, comfortable with the Michelins on their bikes, search out a new set of Scorchers at replacement time. Until recently the only outlet for Scorcher tires was a Harley-Davidson dealership. Now, Drag Specialties has the full Scorcher lineup and that opens up a huge, previously untapped market, and offers a real chance to grow your customer base by providing the tires those Harley riders want.

64

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2017

There’s virtually a tire for every Harley on the road – the Scorcher 11s, Scorcher 21s, Scorcher 31s and those Fat Bob specials, the Scorcher 32s. Drag Specialties has them all, in all the sizes. Michelin has even released new point-of-sale materials on all this, too, helping customers choose the correct Michelin Scorcher tire for their Harley, and helping you understand the tremendous potential for your business. Your rep can set you up with it all. Colorful and attention grabbing, it lets riders know you have the tires designed, homologated and styled for the bikes they fit – Harley-Davidsons.

MICHELIN

Consider those eye-catching Scorcher 11s, the original equipment Michelins for select Street, Sportster, Softail and V-Rod models. With great grip on dry roads and tread grooves optimized to efficiently evacuate water they’re just as dependable in the wet. The 11s combine long-life durability with that high-performance feel, thanks to a compound derived from Michelin’s years of championship-winning race tires. They’re allaround performers incorporating Michelin’s latest radial technology. Precise handling, easy maneuverability, impressive agility and a long life have made them a top pick.

The Scorcher line was co-developed and co-branded by Michelin and Harley-Davidson, and are now available through Drag Specialties as a factory-approved replacement tire for many different models.

Then there’s the Scorcher 21, another Michelin radial designed from the ground up. This one is fit as the only original equipment tire on the new Harley-Davidson Street Rod. It’s a traditional cruiser design, but with plenty of inspiration from Michelin hypersport tires. There’s a sporty feel and plenty of urban agility with this one. It’s nimble, with a lightweight feel and exceptional stability. With a mix of silica-rich rubber, the compounds provide excellent grip on wet surfaces and ensure long, even wear. The Scorcher 31s are another popular pick. Original equipment on select Dyna and Sportster models, they’re an obvious replacement choice there. They’re also the factory-approved replacement tires for most HarleyDavidson Touring models.

The tires feature a supple, comfortable ride coupled with specifically engineered profiles. The 31’s carbon-black enriched compound incorporates all the know-how Michelin’s derived from decades of road-racing experience, and the payoff from that is confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry roads coupled with excellent durability, all without compromising performance. The Scorcher 31s are available in a wide range of sizes, too, accommodating many applications. Designed especially for the Fat Bob, the Scorcher 32s have an innovative and aggressive “reverse” tread design with generously grooved tread patterns and advanced rubber chemistry. It’s a combination adding up to excellent traction on wet or dry roads. There’s great tread life, as well, and even wear to go with the agile handling and smooth ride. There’s a lot to offer here, and fast-growing numbers of Harley riders looking for it all. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to sell the Michelin Scorchers, tires that come OE on a significant number of bikes and are factoryapproved as replacement rubber.

The Scorcher tires benefit from Michelin extensive research and development in road racing. The tires are designed to work well in dry and wet conditions, while remaining agile and smooth.

These are tires with both the Michelin and HarleyDavidson Bar & Shield logos on the sidewalls, and provide you with huge sales potential by offering your customers an option without having to go to a dealership. ■

The package includes some mix-andmatch options, with the dealers’ choice of one each of an exhaust, handlebars, sissy bar and engine guard. The Eclipse finish is a unique look in the motorcycle industry. Its eye-catching burnished black finish is achieved with a proprietary, high-temperature black chrome electroplated finish. Drag Specialties carries many Khrome Werks products that are available in the Eclipse option. The Total Eclipse package for dealers includes exhaust options in everything from a traditional exhaust to a drag style system. One of the latest exhausts from Khrome Werks is a *2:2 system with a 4½-inch billet tip for 2017 touring models. Designed to be a perfect complement to the Milwaukee-Eight engine, the three-step system was engineered to give significant horsepower and torque gains over stock. In addition to power, Khrome Werks designs its exhausts to have a signature sound, and the system for the Milwaukee-Eight stays true to that style. The Eclipse finish is available on a wide range of products, including *exhausts and highway bars.

The Khrome Werks 12-inch bobber-style ape hanger handlebars feature 14-gauge steel tubing with 1¼-inch diameter handlebars and a one-inch center diameter. The bars are pre-dimpled and drilled for late model controls, and they work with standard controls and grips. The handlebars have a number of style options, including 10-inch and 14-inch lengths and additional finishes of polished chrome and gloss black. The grip angle of the bobber-style ape hangers is forward and upward from conventional ape hangers, and dresser bars feature a 12-inch center straight section for proper clearance with a batwing fairing. Eclipse sissy bar styles include the upright 11-inch mini Lowboy, which has a total height that is just shy of 15 inches. Plain and pillow backs are both options for the mini lowboy. Sissy bars mount with side straps, which have a four-screw mounting system with external screws for easy removal of the upright. Uprights, side straps and backs are all available separately. In addition to the mini lowboy, Khrome Werks has 11-inch Eclipse sissy bars in a taller lowboy option as well as a round bar. Khrome Werks offers an OEM-style engine guard in the Eclipse finish for 2009-2017 touring models, but dealers can also order it in a more traditional chrome finish. ■

All Drag Specialties oils are designed and formulated specifically for V-twin engines. These oils and lubricants provide outstanding protection for the engine during cold starting. Particularly important as a selling tool is knowing all the details about the special additives that provide excellent wear protection and durability, while guarding against sludge buildup and oil breakdown. Best of all, Drag Specialties oils are made in the USA and meet all warranty performance criteria for Harley-Davidson engines and do not void new vehicle warranties. They also meet and exceed API CI-4/SL service ratings. Stock up on Drag Specialties Motorcycle Oil. Also offered under the Drag Specialties label are Primary Oil, Full Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant, Transmission Oil, Cable Life Lube, Fork Oil, and Big Twin Gear Oil. Suggested Retail prices start at $6.95, an outstanding value. Whether your customers are having their oil changed in your shop or doing it themselves, they will also need a new oil filter. Drag Specialties also offers excellent Magnetic Ring Oil Filters. These are high-quality spin-onstyle oil filters.

In addition to their extensive lineup of lubricants, Drag Specialties also has a big range of oil filters in both black and chrome.

These magnetic filters are designed with a magnetic ring in the center to capture small particles of loose metal that might otherwise travel through the filter and cause engine wear or damage. They also come with pressure relief valves.

Talk with your Drag rep about how you can get a free POP display to show off that wide selection of branded lubes and oils.

Some filters come with a 17mm nut on the end of the filter for easy installation and removal. Plus, they look great with their black or polished chrome finish, which will appeal to those customers who are proud of their machines. Suggested retail pricing for these filters starts at $12.95. ■

very page of this magazine is proof that your customers go to great lengths to ensure maximum performance and reliability of their bikes, from the seats to brakes, to shocks and tires.

However, some tend to ignore the fuel, the most critical factor in performance, hoping for the best with what comes out of the pump. After all, you can’t do anything to improve fuel quality, can you? The short answer is, “Yes, you can.” John “Paco Perrosuave”Wener racked up more miles on his bike last year than many riders accumulate in a lifetime of riding. He is the kind of guy who thinks nothing of riding from his home in Fort Lauderdale, FL to New Orleans and back to pick up seafood for a weekend cookout or running up to Atlanta to test new rain gear.

Star Tron’s secret is in its proprietary blend of enzymes. These enzymes break apart large clusters of hydrocarbon fuel molecules to create more surface area. This allows additional oxygen to react during combustion for a more complete burn of the fuel charge and more power. Star Tron can even help improve the octane level and combustibility of substandard or old fuel. With Star Tron, your customers can make sure their engines run stronger and at maximum fuel economy, even in quality fuels. It also helps keep fuel tanks, carburetors, injectors and combustion chambers clean.

When he purchased his 2015 Indian Chieftain, it had 1 mile on the odometer. That number has now exceeded 100,000 and continues to grow every week. Wener rode 75,000 miles in 2016 as he chased the title of America’s Ultimate Long Distance Rider and placed third in his firstever Hoka Hey Challenge.

Engines run stronger and at maximum fuel economy, even in quality fuels. A more complete burn of the fuel charge also helps keep fuel tanks, carburetors, injectors and combustion chambers clean.

Whether he is riding 10,000 miles in ten days across 40 states in the Hoka Hey or is underway on another thousand-mile Iron Butt, the bike and every piece of gear on his bike needs to be utterly reliable.

Because Wener’s car often sits in the driveway for weeks while he is out riding, he uses Star Tron to stabilize the fuel and keep it fresh. Star Tron is his edge and advantage — make it your customer’s edge, too. ■

To make sure he meets his daily mileage goals, Wener seeks out every edge, every advantage and only uses products he can rely on without question. That includes fuel.

»» Talk to your Drag rep about the benefits of Star Tron that your customers can enjoy, and check out www.startron.com for more details.

While most riders assume fuel is a factor they can’t control, Wener knows differently, “When my fuel light comes on in the middle of the night, on a remote road far from civilization, I use whatever gas I can find. Often that means an off-brand or maybe not the freshest gas,” he says.” “It’s not uncommon to see long-distance riders having problems with bad gas that can leave them stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. That’s why I use Star Tron at every fuel stop. I never worry about bad gas and my bike always runs great.” Long distant rider and Star Tron user John “Paco Perrosuave” Wener counts on the fuel additive to keep his bike running strong, whether it’s on a short haul or a multi-mile burner across the U.S.

etro style is all the rage right now, and many aftermarket part designers are turning out new products inspired by the past. The Cherokee seat from LePera Motorcycle Seats has all the hallmarks of a throwback 1970s design, and for good reason — the design really is from the 1970s. The classic King/Queen style Cherokee was one of the first seats introduced by LePera when the company opened its doors in 1972. Today, it is available for a wide range of Harley-Davidsons, both new and old. The Cherokee originally debuted only for FX/FLH models, but was later expanded to fit Sportsters. Applications for FXST models followed, and then bagger riders began to request the Cherokee seat for their motorcycles, so LePera complied. Now, the Cherokee is also in high demand for Dynas. Check the FatBook for all available applications from Drag Specialties. The bobbed and chopped styling of the Cherokee means that there is plenty of driver support. That, coupled with the special high-density molded foam that cushions the

The Cherokee seat has three available finishes for the black leather-look cover, including smooth, pleated and diamond. The seat is double-stitched with a bonded polyester thread to offer maximum durability. It is more than just the look of the Cherokee that has been popular for over 40 years. The way it is constructed is a hallmark of LePera Motorcycle Seats. Every seat the company produces begins with a steel base plate, designed to fit tightly to the motorcycle to ensure stability and a sleek silhouette. Each 16-gauge steel base plate is powder coated and edged with a metal-reinforced vinyl protectant, then carpeted on the bottom for a friction-free surface between the seat and the fender. Like the Cherokee design, the steel seat base has become a symbol of the craftsmanship that goes into every seat produced by LePera. ■

alk about a conversation starter. With a Lowrider S like this on the floor it doesn’t take long for the dealership crowds to gather and start asking questions like, “Do you guys sell this stuff?” and “Can you do something like this for me?” The answer at Joe Carbone’s Harley-Davidson of Utica, NY is an unequivocal “Yes.” With those answers, once again, the black-andgold 2016 Dyna had done its job, graphically putting the word out that this dealership does custom and performance. Did we mention that the Lowrider also has a Screamin’ Eagle 120R in it? The Saddleman Step-Up seat looks and fits great. Just as important, it keeps a rider planted.

All this was part of a grand plan. When Joe Carbone took over Harley of Utica he aimed to establish the place as more than just another dealership. His goal was a full-service destination,

a one-stop shop not only for the sale and service of OE bikes, but the place to go for anyone looking to customize a Harley with love, making the FatBook a go-to source. When Shane Gatto came on board, assuming the title of Performance Specialist, things took a giant step forward. If that name sounds familiar it should. Before joining the Harley of Utica team, Shane Gatto Customs, based in nearby Syracuse, turned out some impressive motorcycles, show-winners and head-turners. Immediately put in charge of Harley of Utica’s new custom-and-performance operation, Gatto and a team of talented techs made it happen. Knowing that Carbone wanted to make it known that Harley-Davidson of Utica was a performance shop, he opted to pair that big motor – which cranks out nearly 130 horsepower with torque to match – with a Dyna Lowrider S. “Dynas are coming on strong right now,” Gatto says. “Especially with the younger riders. A hot-rod Dyna just made a whole lot of sense, it’s a classic look.” The theme, built around that 120R, would be HarleyDavidson Lowrider S plus. The plan was to build a bike basically stock in appearance, unmistakably custom, sure, but still retaining the look and feel of an already sweet motorcycle.

“That’s something I’ve always aimed at,” Gatto explains. “I try to incorporate my custom work into what Harley-Davidson has already built, and I think they hit a home run with the Lowrider S. We just put our touch to it, and so far it’s been pretty well received. It’s become a great sales tool at the dealership.” Gatto and the team, especially Mike Daley who assembled this one, drove home Harley’s OE blackand-gold color scheme by powder coating the wheels with a much brighter prismatic gold than the somewhat dulled-out factory finish. Naturally, the Drag Specialties FatBook played a big role in the bike’s month-and-a-half transformation. Alloy Art, Barnett, Chris Products, Custom Dynamics, J.W. Speaker, Rivera Primo, RSD, Magnum Shielding, Saddleman, Speed Merchant and more were all called on, and nothing was overdone or overplayed. “Everything we added was put there for a reason,” Gatto says.

Any wonder why this bike has customers talking? More than just looking tough it’s the total package. Light, fast, nimble, a great ride – there’s not much more to ask from a hot-rod Dyna.

together,” he says. “It’s light. It’s nimble. The handling is phenomenal, it looks really cool and there’s all that power.” None of which is lost on anyone coming into Harley-Davidson of Utica. “These guys all read the magazines,” he says. “And with social media being what it is there’s plenty to look at there, too. But nothing beats seeing a cool custom in person.”

“I’ve built a lot of bikes over the years and, honestly, I think this one just might be the most perfect all-around package I’ve ever put

Mini-Grenades Offer Style, Performance

The Mini-Grenades gives Sportsters a muscular, aggressive look and provide a healthy boost to performance. They’re available in matte black or chrome.

hen it comes to maximizing performance for a Harley-Davidson Sportster, most riders opt for that one-two punch of swapping out the OE exhaust and air intake for something, say, a little sportier. When they do, Vance & Hines has them covered. Are your XL customers already enjoying all the benefits from a set of Vance & Hines Shortshots Staggered pipes? If so, help them kick things up a notch with the new MiniGrenades. These are some next-level exhaust products here. Lean and mean, the Mini-Grenades feature a signature, staggered three-step design that really packs a punch. It’s an aggressive combination of style and performance that gives any Sportster a muscular stance and a speedy look with its race-inspired CNC machined billet end caps. Once installed — the package features everything necessary to bolt it right up and get on the road — the Mini-Grenades offer up a throaty deep tone and a healthy boost at the throttle twist. They are available in chrome or matte black and will work with forward and mid-controls. They fit 2004 to 2017 Sportsters.

To complete this performance trifecta, add in a Fuelpak fuel management system. They are available in the original version and in a version that’s legal for sale in California. The Fuelpak uses fuel maps developed by Vance & Hines to optimize engine performance. ■

Rebuilding Reverse

The Affordable Fix for Trikes

Terry Components’ complete rebuild kit and solenoid offers your Harley-Davidson Trike customers a reliable and cost-conscious way to rebuild their three-wheelers’ reverse motor.

H

arley-Davidson Trike riders have it easy. Backing their three-wheeler into a parking slot is as easy as putting a finger on that handlebar button marked R, check the mirrors to make sure nothing’s behind and that’s it, the electric-reverse system on those Tri-Glides and Freewheelers takes over – until it doesn’t. Things can turn sour pretty fast and, unfortunately, that factory-installed electric-reverse motor is prone to failure. Its replacement isn’t cheap, either. Twelve to fifteen hundred dollars is the going rate. Ouch. Terry Components has the affordable, welcome cure and Drag Specialties has it. It’s a complete rebuild kit and solenoid to put that OEM reverse-system motor back into better than new condition. The rebuild kit (Drag Specialties p/n 2110-0863) has a suggested retail price of $299.95, and a new solenoid (p/n 2110-0862) goes for a suggested retail price of $109.95. Coming from Terry Components, a name well known for high-performing Harley starter motors, you can be sure it’s all top notch. All the components here are new. Nothing is rebuilt or reclaimed. And, everything is included, too, even a detailed instruction sheet. The electric-reverse motor package comes with a brand-new field housing, armature, brush holder with brushes, brush holder retaining clip, brush cap and planetary gear shield. The solenoid, also brand-new, is a direct replacement for OE. Applications cover all the 2009 through present-year Harley-Davidson Trike models.

Replacing an electric-reverse motor in a Tri Glide Ultra or Freewheeler is no laughing matter, not with the prices of those factoryreplacement motors being what they are. The Terry Components rebuild package is the smart, affordable solution here. It’s available now so let those Trike riders know. If their reverse system is working now, remind them should the need arise, there’s an inexpensive solution. While you’re talking Terry Components and electric motors have a look at the lineup of starter motors and starter accessories available here. With 1.4kw, 1.6kw, 1.8kw Sluggers and super-powerful 2.0kw units all available, there’s mega-cranking power for everything from stock and mildly modified Harleys to high-compression 124 motors and more. Everything is assembled using only the highest quality materials and components so your customers can count on them for strength and dependability. Terry Components has a big range of accessories to go with those motors, too, parts like heavy-duty clutch drives, battery cables and fail-safe switches to name just a couple. All of this is available right there in the FatBook. ■

Tough Twin-Cam Pistons

K

B Pistons has introduced a new line of pistons for Harley-Davidson Twin Cam applications. The Super Duty piston series provides premium performance and protection even under severe operating conditions. The Super Duty pistons come standard with Line2Line skirt coating technology. The abradable coating is applied to a thickness of the piston to wall clearance, which is roughly 0.003-inch. The specialized coating abrades (or wears) on start-up, providing the perfect fit for each cylinder. Line2Line technology eliminates piston rock for the best possible ring seal and there will be no piston slap noise. Improved efficiency, lower friction and protection against scuffs and excess wear are other benefits of UEM’s Line2Line coating. The pistons have a dome shape to accept “bathtub” 85cc or “tear drop” 95cc heads. The crowns and top ring groove are both hard anodized. This process aids in heat deflection and prevention of corrosion from alcohol fuels,

The new Super Duty pistons from KB Pistons/UEM feature a specialized coating that helps provide the perfect fit for each cylinder, eliminating piston rock and improving ring seal.

and it prevents the top ring from micro welding to the groove. Because the ring groove maintains a flat and smooth surface, the ring seal is optimized. The complete KB Super Duty piston kit includes pistons, rings, pins and locks. Applications are available for a variety of big cubic-inch Twin Cam engine applications that use the standard 4.937-inch cylinder length. ■

Levers, Cylinders and Perches – depending on the application – are offered in 9/16-inch, 5/8-inch and 11/16-inch bore sizes. All of them are CNCmachined to the highest standards – after all, GMA is part of the BDL family.

GMA’s handlebar controls provide a clean, custom look for those who want to ditch their OE levers and buttons.

F

or years builders in the know, and customizers with taste, have turned to GMA for clean looking products. GMA adds detail without screaming for attention, a style that defines all GMA brake calipers, foot controls and the whole lineup of GMA handlebar controls with applications that cover virtually everything from Harley-Davidson. There are master-cylinder and lever assemblies for both clutch and brake actuation and those master cylinders

GMA also offers handlebar-perch and lever setups for OEM style clutch cables, too. All of them are available with or without a switch kit that includes three momentary switches with chrome buttons that can be wired internally or externally to control starter, turn signals, horn or other functions. All the assemblies fit most 1-inch diameter handlebars (except dimpled bars) and everything is available with a black, polished or chrome finish. As GMA says, and as countless riders know, there’s a clean looking, smooth operating and decidedly custom handlebar control setup here for virtually every Harley, OE-based or a ground-up build. ■

Pumping Up the Milwaukee-Eight Upgrades for HarleyDavidson’s Latest Feuling now has a number of new performance parts and tools designed specifically for the Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engine.

W

hen Harley-Davidson announced its Milwaukee-Eight we knew it would only be a matter of time before the aftermarket responded. It has, and the techs at Feuling Parts jumped right in, buying a couple of those bikes for closer inspection. No surprise, they found plenty to improve.

The upgrades started with two new camshaft grinds to make that torque producing motor even stronger. The Feuling team didn’t stop there, though, developing almost two-dozen more mods for the Milwaukee-Eight and Drag Specialties has them all. Along with those new cams, the 405 Reaper and 465 Reaper (both Qualified Manufacturer Declared Replacement Parts, by the way), there are heavy-duty cam bearings, HP+ performance valve lifters, new high-performance valve seals, upgrade crank sprockets, new cylinder-stud and head-bolt kits, internal- and external fastener kits and more. Feuling’s engine stands, oil-pump tools and precision measuring equipment have also been redesigned for use with the Milwaukee-Eight. The two new camshafts, the 405 Reaper (p/n 0925-1163) is a real workhorse says its designers. A bolt-in replacement, its wide powerband increases torque and horsepower throughout the rpm range. While that 405 Reaper works just fine with the OE valve springs, pushrods, lifters and exhausts, things get demonstrably better with performance pipes and air cleaners. The 465 Reaper (p/n 0925-1164) takes things to the next level. Another bolt-in, this one’s rock-solid bottom-end is coupled with substantial gains above 2,800 rpm when compared to stock. The 465 also responds really well to a jump in displacement and/or compression. ■

HK Clutch Kits

Long-Life, Fade-Free Performance

W

ander into the motor-pool service bays of police departments worldwide, or into the shops of a motorcycle-riding school, and DP Brakes says it’s a good bet you’ll find the Harley-Davidsons in those fleets fitted with the company’s HK Clutch Kits. For good reason. Those bikes get some hard use and the OE clutches are rarely up to the job. The switch to DP’s HK Clutch Kits solves that problem. Not only do the HK Kits last longer, up to seven times longer than OE in most cases, the overall performance and feel is greatly improved and none of this should be surprising. These are clutch kits coming from DP Brakes, a company that knows a thing or two about friction materials. It isn’t just long life offered here, either. Not only do those HK kits last way longer than OE, that long-life performance is strong, smooth, predictable and fade free. Those high performing special-design friction discs are coupled with precision-ground steels, too, all packed into a good-looking plastic box. The stack height is always correct so installation is easy, the fit is spot-on

and there’s no need to pre-soak. Everything’s ready to go right out of the box. A strong, fade-free grip, smooth engagement and long life is something every Harley rider can appreciate. The HK Clutch Kits have all that and more. ■

Quality and Value

High-End Style That Won’t Break the Bank

or over a decade Misfit Industries has offered a variety of amazing Harley-Davidson aftermarket parts. Recently, Misfit did some major retooling which increased the quality and production of many of its products. Now, the company is passing the savings onto you and your customers via Drag Specialties and the FatBook. Misfit Industries offers a unique line of stylish, and beefy, handlebars.

A good example is the Hybrid or Streamline Wrap Design front fenders. Misfit Industries’ design team has taken the guesswork out of installing these tire-hugging front fenders. These precision deep-drawn and stamped 14-gauge steel fenders don’t require any holes or modifications for a direct bolt-on fit. The thickness of the 14-gauge steel adds rigidity to the front-end acting like a fork brace.

Both the two- and three-hole spacers clear aftermarket lower leg fender bracket mounts. Once bolted on, the stainless steel hardware is hidden to streamline the look. The two hole is used for the 21-inch wheel fenders and the three-hole is offered for 23-inch, 26-inch and 30-inch wheel fenders. The stainless steel hardware is included and they come in Black or Chrome. When it comes to handlebars Misfit went in the direction of real world comfort, handling, quality and style. Brawler Bars offer clean styling and an aggressive look at the ideal height. The bar ends taper from 1 inch into the 1¼-inch bar to keep them clean looking.

Misfit has retooled its manufacturing systems so that it can offer its Hybrid and Streamline Wrap Design front fenders at a greater value for your customers.

The ProSwivel Hose Kits

T

here are plenty of good reasons why riders ask about brake lines. Some need an OE replacement, others are looking for an upgrade to complete a performance-braking swap, still others are after custom-sized lines for a custom build. Russell Performance has all of that covered with the ProSwivel Hose Kits.

Russell’s 360-degree swivel banjo system ensures a clean, kink-free installation of the company’s high-quality brake lines.

Upgrade replacement? If it’s a single-disc Sportster, Dyna, Softail or FXR that’s here in direct fit sizes and extended lengths. They are assembled with Russell’s double-crimp technology and PowerFlex hose in clear-coated stainless steel with chrome fittings or black coating over the stainless steel with black fittings.

The kits feature Russell’s exclusive — and patent pending — 360-degree swivel banjo system at the caliper end for a smooth, clean, kink-free installation. The hoses are engineered using two O-rings for a positive seal, and they all utilize the stock mounting locations and hardware and meet or exceed DOT FMVSS-571-106 standards.

For those custom installations, the kits are available in lengths ranging from 40 inches to 54 inches, and with straight, 35-degree and 90-degree upper banjo fittings, as well as those 360-degree swivel banjos at the caliper end. ■

Defying Description

Parts in a Category of Their Own

T

he new custom Harley-Davidson built by Ken Nagai of Ken’s Factory would look right at home cruising down an American highway or turning heads at Sturgis. Instead, the bike was built for riding in Nagai’s home country of Japan, which means he had to adhere to strict Japanese DMV guidelines. The supercharged bike has been dubbed “Hard Call” because it is a hard call on how to label it. The bike is registered as a 2008 FLHX, but it has a frame reminiscent of an FXR. Ken’s Factory parts adorn Hard Call, including custom girder front ends that have a chopper look and slim saddlebags — streamlined for cutting through traffic — that would suggest it can fit into the bagger category.

Specialties carries all of the Neo-Fusion parts, including headlights, brake pedals, floorboards, pegs, grips, LED taillights, and rocker box covers. Proving that mixing things up can be more eye-catching sometimes, the grips, foot pegs and shifter pegs on Hard Call are not Neo-Fusion. Instead, they are Ken’s Factory parts available in a ribbed design. The grips and pegs are

Whether it fits into every category or defies them all, Hard Call is a perfect example of Nagai’s unique design style, which has garnered him accolades worldwide. Want to see the bike in person? Check it out next month at the Ken’s Factory booth at the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI.

The Hard Call from Ken’s Factory highlights Ken Nagai’s out-of-the-world styling and features a number of the company’s parts that are right there in the FatBook.

Fans of Nagai’s designs can find plenty of Ken’s Factory production parts in the FatBook, including the marker lights, ribbed grips and foot pegs, gas cap and engine covers that are used on Hard Call.

also available in dimpled and spiral dimpled options. The machined billet aluminum grips and pegs come in an anodized Black Machine or Polished finish.

The polished Neo-Fusion LED marker lights on the front of Hard Call are machined from billet aluminum and brass. The lens diameter sits at a slim 1¾ inches, and the housing is also available in Black Machine. Both of the finish options come with a choice of color-matched rings or brass rings for a bit of contrast.

Ken’s Factory opened up in 1990 to provide customers with production parts that matched the style of Nagai’s custom builds. Decades of producing one-off Harley builds has allowed Nagai to hone his craft and his style, and his signature flair can be found on everything from baggers to café racers. When Ken’s Factory expanded to the United States, Drag Specialties was quick to pick up the unique line. ■

The gas cap on the bike is also from the Neo-Fusion line and is made for custom applications. The 2¾-inch gas cap has the distinct styling of the Neo-Fusion line, and Drag

Smart USB Charging

O

n-board USB charging of smartphones, GPS and cameras has become an integral part of motorcycle riding and long distance touring. The downside is, riders often forget that the USB charger is still hooked up after the vehicle has been parked, and left long enough, it will drain that battery down to dead. As one of the first to incorporate battery protection into its USB chargers, TecMate says it was a simple decision. There is no point in undoing the continuous good work that the OptiMate battery saving chargers are doing by letting the USB charger kill the vehicle’s battery after the ride. The OptiMate USB O-108 is a weatherproof in-line charger with 80-inches of reach that delivers 3300mA, which is powerful enough to fast charge the latest power hungry smartphone. The built-in battery protection shuts down three hours after sensing the engine has stopped, with emergency shut down set at 12.3V (AGM battery charge level below 50 percent.) A three LED panel indicates vehicle battery voltage status.

The USB O-108 can keep your customers electronics charged, while protecting their vehicles’ batteries. Its packaging is perfect for display.

The USB charge socket incorporates a unique zip-tie barrel and loops for quick attachment to any strut, bar or cable. The rubber seal and cap creates a weatherproof seal at insertion of a standard USB charge cable. Retro Flair

EMD’s Homage to Classic Style It was Sportster components that propelled EMD’s popularity in Europe, although there are a lot more applications available now than there were back when the company began producing motorcycle parts in 2011. EMD is a French company, and Pigeyre has been a driving force in the European Harley scene. Now that EMD parts are available through Drag Specialties, North American dealers, builders and riders can appreciate the retro styling and quality of EMD parts. All EMD parts are manufactured at EMD’s headquarters in southern France.

There’s no denying the vintage pedigree of EMD’s line of finned and ribbed covers. Whether it’s for a primary or a cam, those covers carry that classic retro vibe.

T

ake a look at EMD’s custom motorcycles and you will quickly notice the retro vibe that ties them together. Part of that vibe comes from the company’s distinctive ribbed covers, which give even the most modern Harley-Davidson an instant retrostyling makeover. EMD owner Nicolas Pigeyre designs his parts as a sort of homage to the past. The ribbed design on EMD’s various covers are inspired by the cylinder heads that graced the 1942 Flathead, and the company even offers an electric kicker for Sportsters that resembles an old-school kickstarter.

EMD’s Ribsters rocker box covers have that distinctive ’42 Flathead inspiration. Sold in pairs, they are manufactured in die-cast aluminum with a CNC milled gasket surface, and available finishes include black, black cut and raw. They utilize stock hardware and gaskets to make installation easy. Sherman rocker box covers have a rigid, old-fashioned industrial style. The black and raw finishes offer a toughlooking alternative to traditional billet covers. The EVO Sportster can get a vintage look with the Iron EVO rocker box covers, or the bike can go incognito: Shovel rocker box covers lend a Shovelhead look to the EVO, while XR Trackster covers have an XR750 flat tracker look. EMD has a variety of covers in the Snatch ribbed design, a variation of EMD’s classic style. The die-cast aluminum covers are machined to have dimensions and tolerances identical to their OEM counterparts. Like the rocker box covers, the Snatch ribbed covers use stock hardware and gaskets, and finishes come in black, black cut and raw. Other ribbed designs from EMD include the Ribsters cam cover and Knuckle cam cover, both for XLs. For Sportsters, a ribbed sprocket cover provides a “split transmission” look without the need for fabrication. Riders who want more than a mere sprocket cover can replace the stock piece with the Sportster Electric Kicker. Designed to replicate the look and function of an authentic kickstarter, the kicker actuates a 12V micro switch, which can be custom wired into the harness. The kicker kit comes with a sprocket cover, four-speed style transmission case end and the kicker arm with a pedal and micro switch. ■

EMD even offers a wide range of rocker box covers that will dress up any V-twin motor.

Bolt-on Big Wheels

Leading Axle Fork Lowers Make it Easy

Battistini’s Leading Axle Lowers make it easy and cost effective to bolt on a big front wheel, and don’t require any frame modifications.

A

23-inch front wheel on a bagger bike is a cool look. It’s a popular one, too, despite the cost and all the effort involved, not the least of which is cutting the frame at the neck. That’s a commitment, both financially and emotionally. Now that big-wheel look has become a whole lot more accessible. Battistinis Leading Axle lower-leg fork sets take a huge amount of the expense, and all of the specialized frame work, out of the equation here. The Leading Axle lowers – developed in conjunction with American Suspension – have turned this popular big-wheel conversion into a bolt-on job. No frame modifications whatsoever. The Leading Axle lower sets are available now and Drag Specialties has them. Designed and engineered with a style reminiscent of top-flight motocross technology, Battistinis Leading Axle lowers put the required extra rake at the bottom end of the fork, not up top at the frame neck and triple-trees. The Leading Axle re-positions the front axle more than 1½-inches forward and approximately ½-inch lower than stock, a dual-move that delivers the required rake to accommodate a bigger, 23-inch front wheel. This also couples it with the correct trail geometry for straight-line stability, slow-speed rideability, a decreased

92

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

tendency for fork flop and no need for travel limiters or uprated springs. In fact, there’s even increased suspension travel. The Battistinis lowers also provide the option of using OE single- or dual-disc braking, or performance radial-mount calipers with an optional bracket. With that radial-mount set up you’re able to use everything from 11½-inch to 18-inch rotors. A competent tech, Battistinis claims, can complete the entire conversion from stock to big-wheel 23 in a matter of hours, all this happening without even removing the fairing. The stock fender can even be reused without the need for any raise-up kits. Two versions of the Leading Axle fork-leg lowers are available. One covers all the 2008 to 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHT, FLHR, FLHX and FLTR models, and there’s another one for the 2014 to 2017 bikes. The lowers are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum. Thanks to a modular construction, various color/finish combos are possible. Choices of chrome, black, chrome/ black and black/chrome are all offered at a suggested retail of $1,399.95. ■

KLOCK WERKS ...continued from page 97 SPORT FLARE™ WINDSHIELDS The Sport Flare™ option is a more streamlined version of our Flare™ Windshield; offers radical curves and a sportier stance Complements the lines of the new FLTR fairing with a more aggressive profile and adds stability and handling with improved air management The patented design features “hips” at the sides that re-route the wind away from riders while adding downforce to the front-end of the motorcycle to improve stability vs. riding with the stock windshield The flip at the top of the Flare™ redirects air back as clean, less turbulent air for rider and passenger Wind tunnel designed and tested Lexan® Polycarbonate with FMR hard coating is used to create these custom-molded designs with unmatched durability All are predrilled for easy mounting using stock windshield hardware Made in the U.S.A.
