know I am in the same boat with many of you who get so busy running the business that its often hard to find time to go ride motorcycles. Fortunately, our friends at Drag Specialties know what makes things tick in the motorcycle business and invite us to go riding with them once a year. What a great reminder to not forget what got us here! Last November, Drag Specialties held its 12th annual Dealer Ride, this time based on the outskirts of Las Vegas. What a great location that was for two days of motorcycle riding. One day we went over to the eastern edge of the majestic Death Valley National Park, and the next day we rode southeast to the Hoover Dam. The destinations were great, but of course, it’s the journey that really counts...and the

NEWS EVENTS Passing the Torch RAY PRICE HARLEY-DAVIDSON CHANGES OWNERSHIP

F

or 36 years the place has been right at center of the V-twin world. For good reason: Ray Price HarleyDavidson in Raleigh, NC is the real deal. So was its owner, Ray Price, winner of countless national drag-racing events, a racer who set more than 50 national records, a man known as “Father Of The Funnybike,” an inductee into no fewer than four Halls Of Fame and a Drag Specialties dealer from the start, way back in 1982. Ray Price Harley-Davidson was, and is, the kind of place where everyone lives and breathes Harley-Davidson motorcycles. These are the guys who put together the 2018 FatBook cover bike, a custom also featured in this issue. Since Ray’s passing in 2015 his wife, Jean, ran the dealership with Mark Hendrix as general manager. And now, in keeping with Ray’s long-held wish Jean has sold the dealership. This wasn’t a rash move. Ray had always planned to sell the store the minute he turned 80, close the lid on his toolbox one last time and jump into a motorhome with Jean to tour the country. With his passing that didn’t work out as planned, but since Ray Price would have celebrated his 80th birthday in 2018 Jean heeded his wish and sold the dealership. Jean Price didn’t sell this iconic Harley-Davidson dealership to just anyone, though. The new owner, John Morotti, was

Ray and Jean Price

handpicked. A longtime friend to both Ray and Jean and a Harley-Davidson dealer sharing the Price’s values and business strategies, he’s someone Jean knew would proudly carry the torch lit by Ray Price. In fact, he considers it an honor to have the legacy, the brand, of Ray Price put into his hands. So no employees are changing, no one’s leaving and Mark Hendrix is still general manager. One thing that will change, however, is the dealership’s name. With the sale Jean Price chose to also retire the name Ray Price Harley-Davidson, much as had been done with Ray Price Motorsports after Ray’s 2015 passing. “We went out on top with the race team,” Mark Hendrix says. “Jean decided to do likewise with the dealership.” So, Ray Price Harley-Davidson is now Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson. Maybe a little different on the outside, but absolutely unchanged where it counts. ■

rag Specialties, and its sister company Parts Unlimited, will join the American International Motorcycle Expo as an exhibitor, first at its 2018 show in Las Vegas, and then in 2019 in Columbus, Ohio.

The global parts and accessories distributor will join the greater powersports industry as a vital addition to the five-year-old powersports tradeshow. Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited and their host of brands extend the lineup of exhibitors represented at AIMExpo presented by Nationwide as the first major distributor, a key category important for continued growth of the show. “Parts Unlimited has deep roots in the industry and it’s pivotal to be among our peers to assess the health of the sport and industry, while also creating the opportunity to make connections with new and existing dealers and vendors,” said Mike Collins, president and CEO of LeMans Corporation. “The MIC-produced event provides a highly important place for powersports businesses to come together.” According to Larry Little, vice president and general manager, MIC Events, postshow research identified that meeting with distributors is a major reason that dealers attend the event.

“In just over five years, AIMExpo presented by Nationwide has established itself as North America’s annual gathering place for all of powersports,” Little said. “The addition of iconic distributors Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited signifies the platform’s value and importance for all industry constituents.” ■

Stepping Up and Giving Back TEXAS DEALER TAKES ACTION WHEN DISASTER STRIKES

QUALITY CABLES

FROM A TRUSTED NAME

W

hen Kevin Lackey bought his first dealership in 2012, he knew he wanted to build his business around five core values — hard work, team work, integrity, discipline and the idea of giving back.

Now that he’s grown his Fort Worth, Texas-based dealership group, Freedom Powersports, into 14 locations across three states, he says those five pillars of strength are woven directly into the workaday proceedings of his entire company. The Parts Unlimited dealer points out that the last one, giving back, is especially important for his stores. “On my priority list, it’s probably more important than being at the local races on Friday night,” he notes. “Giving back to the community that supports us is essential.” So, when Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coast in August, Lackey had the opportunity to put those values into action on a grand scale. Although none of his dealerships were affected by the tropical cyclone battering the Houston area, he did have family in the hurricane’s path. Dealer Kevin Lackey

Monitoring the action from his headquarters about four hours away from the hardest hit regions, it soon became apparent that something truly devastating was happening as floodwaters rose dangerously and quickly. As the situation grew more dire, Lackey says it really hit him hard that in addition to his family, there were a lot of people in harm’s way. With this in mind, he started thinking that something more needed to be done, that he needed to do something. This thought soon turned into an obsession and one early morning he woke up about 4 a.m. and decided it was time for action. Over dinner with his family that night, he told his wife that he wanted to go to Houston to help out.

“I told her we can take some Jet Skis and boats and see how we could help,” he says. With his wife’s blessing, Lackey called up one of his regional managers, Chase Vance, told him he was heading out at 7 p.m. that night and asked if he wanted to help. Vance agreed without hesitation and the two headed out to load up hip-waders and other gear. The two of them headed to his dealership, and picked up some personal watercraft, about 20 jugs of fuel and headed down to Houston. “It was the right thing to do,” he says. “If we had the ability to help, and the wherewithal to help, why were we not down there helping?” “We knew we couldn’t get a lot of people on the Skis, but we figured we could get into tight areas and let the search and rescue teams know where they where,” he explains. Cruising along the flooded streets, they found themselves having to limbo under power lines and realized they were scooting across the top of submerged cars. “It was an absolute free-for-all. It was crazy. There was a moment when I told myself this is the most surreal thing I’d ever seen,” he says. “We were riding around and it was getting dark and we were yelling for people. The water level had risen to the second floor of some homes. I was yelling, ‘Hello, is there anyone there.’ And it would just be eerily silent.” As he and Vance passed through flooded neighborhoods, they could see into open garages where cars were under water with the dome lights on and doors open. This was an indicator that people thought they could get away, he says, but the flood waters came so fast, the authorities ordered them to gather in the second floors of their houses. “We were launched in one area of Kindwood, and we went into this one area near a lake and some submerged apartments. All you could see was water,” Lackey says. “Then, ahead a bit, we saw these things in the water, we thought they were people swimming.” When they got closer, they realized they were the tops of streetlights poking through the water’s surface. Lackey and Vance worked tirelessly for three days, getting only minimal sleep before heading back out to assist the search and rescue teams for long stretches of time. Dog tired, and a little shocked, they headed back home where Lackey says he was grateful to see his family. Now a few months after the flooding, Lackey has had a chance to reflect on the whole thing. He points out that Vance deserves special recognition for his role, saying that he didn’t even think twice before stepping up to help out. xxxxxx

“It makes me proud, what we did and what other people did. Nobody was posting anything on social media or talking about what was going on. It was very gratifying,” Lackey notes. “It makes me think about what you can do more often, not just when something bad happens, to be able to help your community. That’s important to me as an organization. We don’t need to be recognized. It’s just something we felt we needed to do.” ■

On the Road Again HELMET & APPAREL TOUR 2018

D

rag Specialties and Parts Unlimited launched a new sales initiative last year that spun heads. In a striking show of unparalleled logistics and unmatched commitment to delivering the best customer experience to their partners in the industry, Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited took a lineup of industry leading brands on the road. Coast to coast, six cities per week for six straight weeks, semi-trailers filled to the top with all the latest gear rolled in with a mission. It was beyond impressive! Based on the tremendous response received from dealers this year, Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited are excited to announce that the tour will hit the road again in 2018 with all of the newest product. The main objective of the tour is to give dealers the opportunity to see and try on all of the new gear so they can make better buying decisions. With the assistance of their local sales reps, combined with the expertise of the vendors, it is easy to understand that this is the best way to select the right gear for each dealer’s customer base. Additionally, dealers will now have the opportunity to check out brands they are not familiar with and consider options other than those previously sold in their shops. A dealer who attended one of the events commented, “This is the way to buy. Looking at the color, the size, and the quality, all helped to build an order. Seeing all the brands in one place at one time was awesome.”

16

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2018

Industry-leading brands such as Alpinestars, Arctiva, Icon, Moose, Slippery, Thor, and Z1R will all be represented on the tour and dealers can take full advantage of the opportunity to learn about all the newest releases and top selling product. Not sure why one pair of gloves costs $20 more than a similar appearing pair? The experts will answer those kinds of questions and more. A tremendous benefit built into the tour is employee training. Dealers are encouraged to bring their entire staff to learn firsthand from the experts. This is a huge opportunity and as one dealer put it, “Putting a more knowledgeable staff on my floor sets my dealership apart from the competition and improves sales.” Dealers and their employees will have the opportunity for comprehensive face-to-face training with all of the vendors. Dealers can schedule appointments that best fit their schedules so they can spend quality time with their reps. Food and refreshments will be served from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. With a new road map for the tour, Drag Specialties is expecting an even bigger turn out this year from the dealer response it has received. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again, as well as those dealers who couldn’t attend last year,” said Jeff Derge, vice president of sales, LeMans Corporation. “Working together, we will make your 2018 apparel sales the best yet.” ■

1968-2018

CELEBRATING THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

T

hink about this: Harley-Davidson sold about 27,000 new bikes in 1968, and 50 years ago the V-twin aftermarket parts industry itself was composed of only a few small companies offering a limited number of products.

However, before it became a giant, Drag Specialties first had to become, well, a small company. With that, let’s take a quick look back at the company’s first 50 years.

My how things have changed. Today we know there are nearly 250,000 new Harleys sold annually, and the aftermarket business is comprised of hundreds of small and big manufacturers spread across the world.

The beginning in this case would be the starting line. As the name suggests, Drag Specialties’ roots reach deep into the sport of motorcycle drag racing where company founder Tom Rudd competed on quarter-mile tracks with his modified HarleyDavidson Sportster.

Heading the charge of that aftermarket business is Drag Specialties, the leading distributor of parts, accessories and apparel for those V-twins, and a company that commands a global network of dealers. Founded in 1968, Drag Specialties is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, a remarkable feat in the motorcycling world. Custom products for customizing motorcycles, that’s where Drag Specialties got its start and its still what the company does better than anyone else.

20

50

The company is recognized as the major player in the V-twin aftermarket. Five decades of dedication, hard work, savvy marketing and sharp business acumen has helped it become the industry leader it is today.

CUSTOM FROM THE START

By 1965, Rudd and his 77-cubic-inch Sportster were performing quite well in the A-Dragster class, and soon fellow competitors looked to him and two of his racing friends for help with their Sportster engines. About that same time, the trio of racers began building and modifying customers’ engines in their garage, turning a small profit although they had yet to form an official business with an official name; their goal was simply to earn a few extra bucks to help subsidize their racing habit.

CATALOG COVERS

Even though the Drag Specialties moniker stuck, the company’s philosophy of doing business soon changed. Rudd, who was a progressive thinker and businessman, one day suggested to his two business partners that they should build and market some performance and custom bike parts. The three young men took a vote and when the ballots were counted the tally showed one in favor of the parts business, two opposed. It could have ended there, but Rudd was persistent and rather than give up he offered to buy out his partners. He handed over some cash and they turned over all rights to the name Drag Specialties. Overnight Drag Specialties transformed from a servicing company to a manufacturing brand. A company is only as good as its products, so Rudd began developing a product line that he felt the fledging custom motorcycle industry would want. About that same time, the movie Easy Rider captivated a generation of young motorcycle owners looking to convert their bikes to choppers. Rudd sought to tap into that demand by offering them cool parts, and called various small shops making parts to ask about distributing their wares through his fledgling company. Small companies and bike builders such as Smith Brothers & Fetrow joined the Drag

1975

Specialties bandwagon, and soon enough Rudd began manufacturing and offering his own parts. The Knight Light, Coffin Light, Maltese Cross taillight, Dragtron air filter, and the wildly popular round rib pegs were among the first items to be listed. The product line itself targeted American V-twin and other bikes alike. Eventually Drag Specialties published its first catalog that remained in use through 1972; the second edition reached dealers the following year. By then the company had expanded the product line to include oil tanks, handlebars, sissy bars and custom seats. There was even a division for polishing and chrome plating parts. Naturally this growth meant more employees were needed to help fill orders, monitor inventory, ship parts and so on. Fittingly, early staffers included some former drag racers, among them Jim Preisler serving as general manager, and Scott Dale to help Rudd’s wife Penny run advertising. Another drag-racing refugee, Doug Douglas, spearheaded product research. Rudd recruited from the non-racer ranks, too. Jim Betlach, who had promoted a successful custom motorcycle show in Minneapolis, was tasked with organizing what has grown to become one of the largest national sales teams in the motorcycle aftermarket industry today. By the early 1980s Drag Specialties was in top gear and making huge strides.

DRAG SPECIALTIES 50TH

As the story goes, one day a potential customer called Rudd on the telephone and inquired, “Is this Drag Specialties?” Without hesitation, Rudd replied that yes, it was, and the name stuck.

Under the guidance of founder Tom Rudd, Drag Specialties started as a parts manufacturer before transitioning into a pure distribution model under the LeMans Corporation.

SPECIAL FEATURE For Drag Specialties, it’s always been about the ride, starting way back with Tom Rudd and his drag racing buddies. Today it’s no different. One of the company’s most popular events is the annual dealer ride, where dealers, vendors and Drag employees gather in riding hotspots throughout the country for some two-wheel therapy.

THE NEXT CHAPTER Then misfortune struck, and Rudd was prompted to sell Drag Specialties. By 1988 LeMans Corporation founder and chairman Fred Fox had purchased the Minnesota-based business and put it under his company’s umbrella. The first order of business was to build the dealers’ trust, and so Fox called on industry veteran Carl Beard, who had previously managed the purchasing department under Rudd, to assist in guiding the recovery. Fox’s plan was to have Drag Specialties concentrate almost solely on parts distribution, and so all of the manufacturing divisions were dissolved. That is, all but one division — Drag Specialties Seats. Fox had plans for it. Kevin Lehan, who had worked in the seats division since 1974 eventually was promoted to general manager for Drag Specialties Seats, a position he still holds today. All current manufacturing steps, including advanced techniques such as vacuum-form molding and integrated foam tooling for shaping and cutting, were adopted to put Drag Specialties Seats at the forefront of the industry. Lehan still has all the original tooling and patterns for those early seats, everything necessary to crank out the same models that were popular way back when.

That Drag Specialties truck is a familiar sight at dealer events and rallies across the country. It’s always packed with the latest, greatest products from Drag’s popular vendors.

Another familiar face who joined the company in 1974 was Tom Motzko. “I worked in the warehouse, helping ship parts,” recalls Motzko. “We had a warehouse full of 3-footby-3-foot containers filled with all sorts of new parts.” Today Motzko helps coordinate the product lines between Drag Specialties and the vendors supplying the thousands of parts the company carries. Fox also directed the LeMans team to update the Drag Specialties Catalog, adding more and more parts each year, while improving the book’s graphics so that dealers could locate part numbers quicker and easier than before. Edge Advertising, which handles much of the marketing and advertising for LeMans, was tasked with giving the catalog a new and unique look. The hard work paid off each

YEARS 1968-2018

INTO THE FUTURE No doubt Drag Specialties’ product line will continue to expand as innovative parts for Harley’s Milwaukee-Eight lineup find their way to the market. To make way for those new parts in the FatBook, all Evolution-model parts have been moved to the OldBook. The 2018 FatBook showcases thousands of parts within its 1,800-plus pages. The OldBook boasts more than 1,300 pages of products for all pre-Twin Cam models. The largest parts catalogs in the V-twin market continue to serve as major tools for Drag Specialties’ national sales team, which is composed of experienced and dedicated people who, in addition to having a firm grasp of the market itself, are also V-twin enthusiasts. In fact, the company counts as enthusiasts everyone from the workers in the Drag warehouses and upper management to that expert sales force and technical support team. They’re riding everything from Bobbers and choppers to full dressers and old Ironhead Sportsters. It’s been that way since those early days with Rudd and his drag racing cohorts, and it points to a company that truly understands its customers and vendors because they’re all about the same thing – riding motorcycles. That level of enthusiasm has also allowed Drag Specialties to track, tend to and often lead the various motorcycling trends that have come and gone (and often returned) over the past 50 years. Whether it was the chopper craze of the ’60s, the reality TV-inspired choppers of the late ’90s/early 2000s or the diggers, pro-streets, Bobbers, Baggers, and other customs, Drag Specialties has always been on point with the parts and accessories riders want.

Just as motorcycling trends have evolved, so has the business. While there are still a number of small mom-and-pop shops going strong, the V-twin landscape now also includes larger high-end dealerships with sophisticated retailing operations. No matter what size the dealer, Drag Specialties works to keep them informed, educated and healthy through a number of initiatives. The spring and fall NVP Product Expos allow dealers to preview new products and sales programs for the coming sales season. And, a newer program launched in 2017, the Drag Training Tour, brings new products directly to dealers at informal seminars all across the country.

1992

Earlier this winter, LeMans Corporation recently committed to participating in the American International Motorcycle Expos (AIMExpo) for 2018 and 2019. This makes Drag Specialties the first major distributor to exhibit at the show. All of these events serve to educate dealers with hands-on product training, vendor seminars, and offers them the opportunity for dealers, sales reps and manufacturers a chance to gather and talk business. Drag Specialties is committed to keeping its dealer network strong and informed.

DRAG SPECIALTIES 50TH

year as the catalog got bigger and fatter. Soon enough the production staff at Edge casually referred to the Drag Specialties Catalog as “the fat book.” As Edge Advertising’s Cheryl Rugland explains, “When we were meeting to discuss the 1996 catalog the name was brought up to Fred Fox and he liked it. That was pretty much it, and it’s been the FatBook ever since.”

1996

It’s not all hard work at Drag Specialties, though. For the past 12 years the company has sponsored the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride, which gets dealers and participating vendors together for a little R&R&R – rest, relaxation and riding. In 2017, dealers got to explore the picturesque desert scenery outside of Las Vegas. The landscape of the motorcycling industry may have changed drastically over the last 50 years, but there are still a couple of constants and the wildly popular Drag Specialties Dealer Ride points to one major lasting element.

2003

That element is the one thing that launched Drag Specialties in the first place is still there, the love of motorcycles and the desire to make them run faster, perform better and look good all along the way. It’s been that way for 50 years, and look for it to continue for many years to come. ■

CELEBRATING A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE

A Drag Specialties/Ray Price Harley-Davidson collaboration, this all-business Road King is the 2018 FatBook Cover Bike. The embodiment of custom performance, it marks Drag Specialties’ 50th year in business.

An Auto Meter 5-inch Playback tachometer dominates the instrumentation, a not-so-subtle reminder that drag racers had a hand in this build.

A smooth Memphis Shades Bullet fairing flows right into the Paul Yaffe Razor Back fuel tank, which in turn blends into a customstitched Drag Specialties solo seat. The handlebar is a Todd’s Cycle Polished Moto with grips from Joker Machine.

That’s where the guys from Drag started talking about a FatBook build with the team from Ray Price Harley-Davidson from Raleigh, NC. The result, all these months later, is Number 50, a very special tribute to Drag Specialties’ 50th anniversary. Teaming up with the Ray Price guys for this anniversary project is also a nod to a pure-performance relationship Drag Specialties has had with the late-Ray Price and his do-it-all street/race/custom HarleyDavidson dealership. The drag-racing pioneer and AMA Hall of Famer was sponsored by Drag Specialties during his years on the track, and for decades that shop in Raleigh has been a dedicated Drag Specialties dealer. No. 50’s collaboration became a celebration three-times over — for Drag Specialties’ 50 years in business; for both Drag’s and Price’s decadeslong commitment to all-things Harley-Davidsons; and, of course, for drag racing. It was a natural.

All those holes in the pegs and controls could only mean Battistinis. BDL’s 2-inch belt drive with a satin finish two-piece motor plate is the new primary.

Just as naturally, the brand-new 2017 Road King pulled out of stock in Raleigh would be totally worked over, not only to look good, but to also carry plenty of all-around performance to match its looks. Serious racers and riders like the Ray Price techs would have it no other way. Neither would the Drag Specialties team; the company, after all, was born from drag racing.

he 2018 FatBook cover bike, this matte-finished and metal flake-glistening Road King, got its start more than a year ago at the Drag Specialties dealer ride in Jekyll Island, Georgia.

The Drag Specialties seat is a custom-match to Yaffe’s Razor Back tank. Battistini extended fork boots dress-out a suspension using Legend’s AXEO cartridge conversion. Yaffe side covers and Chupa rear fender flow right along with the extended Drag Specialties saddlebags. Note the filled exhaust cutout on the left-side saddlebag.

So, that Milwaukee-Eight-powered bike got the full treatment — engine upgrades, suspension upgrades, better braking and better handling. All in all, it became a betterperforming, better-looking Harley-Davidson. To get there this brand-new motorcycle was stripped down to the bare frame and reassembled from the engine-cradle up. Along the way it also became the test-mule for plenty of newly designed prototype parts from the aftermarket, custom bolt-ons aimed at the new Harley-Davidsons and the Milwaukee-Eight engine. Many of those parts are now in production and in the 2018 FatBook, and for that you can thank this bike. Reassembly began with a fresh coat of paint for the frame, a step that the Ray Price guys feel is too often overlooked. Painting a frame to match whatever else will be going on colorwise kicks any bike up a notch on the custom scale. It makes a difference. The rest began with a clever adaptation of the currently hot fat front tire movement. Everyone agreed on a 150/70-18 as being plenty big enough for the desired look and handling stability without overdoing things.

With a careful selection of parts, this was accomplished with bolt-on parts and without any serious fork or triple-tree modifications. A Metzeler ME888 went on a new 4¼-inch wide Performance Machine Galaxy wheel special ordered in a raw finish. (Talk with your Drag rep about how to custom order parts like this.) That race-ready look was bracketed by a pair of matching Galaxy rotors and PM radial-mount calipers, and finished off with Battistini extended fork boots. The latter feature a drilledout racer’s look that would be carried on throughout the build. The new front wheel and tire were covered with a widened Russ Wernimont LS-2 style fender and inside those legs there’s a Legend Suspensions AXEO system, a suspension upgrade matched at the rear with Legend’s AIR-A adjustable shocks. When the engine went back into that frame, the MilwaukeeEight was sporting its own set of upgrades, inside and out. Reasoning that a sensibly hopped-up 107-inch multi-valve engine would be plenty for a street-ridden custom, the inside changes, so far, were limited to an S&S Cycle 465G gear-drive *cam and kit. A custom-polished S&S Cycle *2into-1 system replaced the stock exhaust.

2017 HARLEY-DAVIDSON ROAD KING Customized By Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Raleigh, NC

The bodywork finishing all this kicked off with a Memphis Shades fairing and a giant Auto Meter 5-inch playback tachometer custom-mounted front-and-center. There is a Paul Yaffe Razor Back tank, the matching Drag Specialties solo seat, Yaffe’s Chupa rear fender, Drag Specialties extended saddlebags and more from Paul Yaffe with the Swoop Side covers styled to flow into those saddlebags. Everything got multi-coat attention with more of that same matte-red metalflake used on the frame, this time accented with plenty of silvery-gray panels put down in a now-you-see-it/now-you-don’t scallop treatment. It looks killer, exactly what you’d expect from a FatBook cover bike. Take a good look here, there’s plenty to see. There will be plenty of other chances to see it all, too. This is the 2018 FatBook cover bike after all, and you’ll be going to that big catalog often this year. For Drag Specialties’ 50th Anniversary, the FatBook is bigger and better than ever, packed solid with almost everything from the most sought-after vendors in our industry. Run down the accompanying Build Sheet for No. 50 for just a hint of what’s new. The bike is also slated to go out on the Drag Specialties show truck circuit so there will be plenty of opportunities to examine things up-close and personal. ■ *DISCLAIMER: NOT LEGAL FOR SALE OR USE IN CALIFORNIA ON ANY POLLUTION CONTROLLED MOTOR VEHICLES

he Powersports industry knows that winter is no time to close up shop and wait out better weather, not when the coming sales season is only a couple of calendar pages away.

Instead, everyone from dealers to aftermarket manufacturers uses that seasonal lull to get things in place for when customers are ready to ride as soon as the weather’s ready. For 2018, Drag Specialties’ Spring NVP Product Expo is just the place to see the hottest new products from some of the industry’s leading brands. The NVP returns in February to Indianapolis in a new location — the Indiana Convention Center — with a show that boasts a 50 percent larger footprint, an expanded list of vendors, new product presentations and a host of indepth dealer training sessions. Dealers gathering in Indy for the 2018 Expo can expect to check out all of the new street and off-road products that will be lining dealership shelves come spring. The show allows for the time to get detailed information about new apparel, accessories and hard parts from the manufacturers themselves. The 2018 spring show features the always-popular product training seminars from vendors such as Biltwell, Custom Dynamics, Dunlop, Klock Werks, Legend Suspensions, Michelin, and S&S Cycle. These sessions are always a wealth of product information and help gain the type of insider information that helps ramp up sales. 28

While those approvals are very important in securing sales for Drag Specialties dealers in all 50 states, they aren’t the sexy attributes that most of your customers are looking for in an aftermarket exhaust system. That’s where S&S Cycle’s 60 years of hot rod history and go-fast products comes into play. You see, in developing the El Dorado system, the horsepower junkies at S&S knew they needed to build an exhaust that not only complies with strict emission standards, but also performed well and looked great. With the El Dorado, there is all of the above. The system is a combination of S&S Cycle’s Power Tune Dual headers and a set of 4½- inch MK45 mufflers that are fitted with the latest in high-flow catalytic converter technology. The catalyst is placed directly in the muffler, away from the rider to reduce heat, along with a stainless steel baffle and RaceTEX cartridge packing materials.

of wide band or stock O2 sensors are also included. Riders have their choice of high temperature black ceramic or show quality chrome coated full-length heat shields to complement a wide range of bike styles. Those 4½-inch MK45 mufflers (named after a massive Navy gun, the 5-inch/54 caliber Mark 45) are also available in matching show chrome or black ceramic. There are two different style end-caps — the Thruster or the Tracer. Both of them complete the sublimely style El Dorado setup, each offering their own unique styling.

Coming to market with an aftermarket 50-state performance exhaust system for Milwaukee-Eight powered bikes is big news and S&S Cycle will be on hand at the Indianapolis NVP Product Expo with all the details on this new exhaust and the Twin Cam fitment as well. ■

Breakthrough Audio

Engineering a Better Motorcycle Amp

E

allowed Wild Boar to eliminate things like crossover, equalizer and gain controls. While those are common on car stereo amplifiers, many bike stores may not be familiar with these features. This makes the plug-and-play WBA 600.4 a high-power simple solution.

The WBA 600.4 amplifier (p/n 4405-0484) is rated for 150 watts x four at 4 Ohms, and includes the mounting plates for Street Glide and Road Glide models, so dealers don’t have to worry about different part numbers. WBA 600.4 was tuned specifically around the factory radio, which

The WBA 600.4 is a Class D amp, a common design these days as Class D is easy on a bike’s charging system and doesn’t generate too much heat, which allows the amp to be small. The Achilles’ heel of all Class D amps is that they interfere with FM reception, just like any running motor produces exhaust.

ighteen months of development went into the latest product from Wild Boar Audio, but company owner Mike “Pez” Pesdirz says it was worth the wait. The WBA 600.4 amplifier for 2014 and newer Harley-Davidson Touring bikes represents a breakthrough in motorcycle audio engineering.

Wild Boar Audio has been working on the problem for about five years, and the WBA 600.4 represents a product with the engineering breakthrough. “The thing in any Class D amplifier that upsets FM is referred to as EMI, or Electrical Magnetic Interference,” Pez says. “We have developed a process that we call R.E.M.I.T., which stands for Reduced EMI Technology. The improvement is huge.” Pez adds that the technology provides stellar reception for a Class D amp designed for a motorcycle. R.E.M.I.T. isn’t a part that can be purchased that magically fixes FM. Wild Boar Audio realized that the way in which the tiny parts on the circuit board inside the amplifier are placed, and the way the traces in the circuit boards are aligned, could improve the FM reception. Wild Boar’s engineer found that moving circuit board traces as little as 2mm from the new design could cause a significant reduction in FM. That circuit design is now proprietary to Wild Boar Audio, and it will be found on all future Class D products from both them and sister brands Hogtunes and Metrix Audio. The decision to make the WBA 600.4 only for 2014 and newer bikes has to do with, of all things, the factory lights on those models. Rushmore bikes have LEDs rather than incandescent bulbs, freeing up an extra eight amps (8A) of available power, which means a higher-powered audio system can be safely run off the charging system.

The WBA 600.4 is specially tuned for the factory radio on newer model Harley-Davidson Touring bikes. It contains proprietary technology that reduces interference for FM reception.

Adaptive Update

New Features, Lower Price for Intelligent Headlights

J

.W. Speaker’s innovative Adaptive Series LED headlights are getting updated technology, competitive pricing and more versatile fitments for 2018. Dealers will get their first look at the second-generation Adaptive 2 Series headlights during NVP Indy in February. The LED headlights are “adaptive” because they know when a rider is leaning or turning and they dynamically adjust the light accordingly. The intelligent design helps to eliminate darkened blind spots when cornering. The targeted LED beam shines right where a rider needs it to see their way through corners. Behind the LEDs are on-board sensors and advanced electronics that calculate lean angles on a real-time basis, automatically directing the lights to coordinate with the path of the motorcycle. Visibility is immediately maximized in key areas of the road that would be left in the dark with standard, non-adaptive headlights.

J.W. Speaker has revamped its Adaptive Series LED headlights so that the unique, “adaptive” feature will now operate when the high beam is on.

The Adaptive Series LED headlights have an integrated optical system that includes the adaptive low beam and J.W. Speaker’s proprietary ComfortLite™ high beam. It is all housed in a heavy-duty, die-cast aluminum housing that features plug-and-play installation for all available fitments. The headlights come in several sizes, including a 7-inch round fairing style, a 5¾-inch round bucket mount, Road Glide 5¾-inch dual headlights and Victory diamond headlights. They are all DOT compliant for street legal use.

Changes to the Adaptive Series also includes a redesigned rear casting so the light will fit on more motorcycle models.

The Adaptive 2 Series lights that J.W. Speaker is launching at NVP will have improved function over the current generation. Previously, the lamps only had adaptive functionality with the low beam. Now, the adaptive functionality will also operate when the high beam is on. This is called Dual Burn™ and is a feature J.W. Speaker has added to most of its headlights. Fitments will be more versatile beginning in 2018, too. J.W. Speaker has redesigned the rear castings, a change that will allow the company to add to its growing list of fitments, particularly for metric bike applications. While the Adaptive Series lights are increasing in functionality and fitments, the price is actually dropping. All J.W. Speaker Adaptive Series lights are being reduced in price by approximately 20 percent. After two years on the market, J.W. Speaker has seen great success with the lights and a constantly growing number of customers.

The Adaptive 2 Series will be unveiled at the Indianapolis NVP Product Expo.

That growth means that the company has been able to streamline its processes, including manufacturing, engineering and sourcing to achieve economies of scale. The end result is, of course, a better price for customers and an easier sale for dealers. ■

Budget-Minded Upgrades An Economical Choice for Braking

M

agnum Shielding has added the new XR Stainless handlebar installation kits to complement its existing line-up of popular Designer Series handlebar installation kits. These new kits also feature a great fit and excellent quality, but at a very economical price. Magnum’s kits are easy to order (by application and handlebar heights) and all components needed for the installation are included right in the kit. Magnum’s XR installation kits are available for popular ABS and non-ABS Harley-Davidson motorcycles with 12-inch to 17-inch ape-hanger style handlebars. Two colors are available — clear-coated stainless steel or black OE style. Both versions feature highly polished chromeplated fittings. All XR brake lines use an enhanced construction of heavy-gauge stainless steel embedded in a tough, abrasion-resistant nylon outer jacket that provides outstanding durability and excellent braking response. In fact, that is where the acronym XR comes from — it stands for “extreme response.” These brake line assemblies are not generic or universalstyle plumb-together lines, but rather complete brazed assemblies that duplicate the OE-style fitment for optimal appearance and safe routing. XR kits provide the right combination for easy, no-hassle professional installations, and they are designed to exceed all DOT FMVSS-106 requirements for safe on-road use.

Magnum Shielding’s new XR Stainless handlebar installation kits are available for ABS and non-ABS Harley-Davidson models with 12-inch to 17-inch ape hanger-style handlebars.

The kits that contain stainless steel braided control cables are coated with a clear PVC non-yellowing jacket. In the black kits, the OE-style cables incorporate a black vinyl covering, with both styles offering exceptional protection for paint or chrome. All cables have a loweffort, high-efficiency design that meets or exceeds all OE specifications for fitment, construction and endurance. The kits include throttle and idle cables or throttle-bywire extensions, a clutch cable or XR hydraulic clutch line, XR brake lines, copper crush washers, hardware, and turn signal and switch wiring extensions. Magnum is known in the market for its premium Sterling Chromite and Black Pearl braids, but Magnum’s general manager, Tom Vierthaler, says, “These new XR Installation Kits are the first economically-priced kits we’ve ever offered, and given our reputation for accurate fitments and quality, this is nothing short of a home run.” In addition, company president Scott Hurwitz added that, “While the pricing is easy on the wallet, there’s no compromise on quality. These kits offer all the fit, function and performance characteristics that our popular Designer Series kits are known for, and are backed by the same warranty.” ■

Upgrading Both Ends of The Bike

The 944 Series Ultra Touring shocks are a smart upgrade for those fully-loaded Baggers.

R

iders interested in suspension improvements most often direct their attention to the rear end. It’s understandable. A big part of the feedback they’re feeling comes up through the rear wheel and into the seat. However, limiting the upgrade to a new set of performance shocks is doing only half the job. A motorcycle’s comfort and control are maximized only when the front and rear suspension systems are matched in performance, and for that it’s important to couple any upgraded rear suspension with appropriate improvements to the front. Progressive Suspension has everything needed for that Harley-Davidson upgrade, front and rear. Finding all this is as easy as opening the FatBook. There’s a full selection of Progressive Suspension shocks, coil-overs and front-fork Monotube Kits from which to choose. A popular start is at the rear with either the 444 Series shock absorbers or the 944 Series Ultra Touring and Ultra Low touring shocks. Available in three configurations, Standard for up to 250 pounds, Heavy Duty with a 250 to 350 pounds rating and Super Heavy Duty for 350-plus pounds. Every shock is hand built, tuned and dynamometer tested at the Progressive Suspension facility in La Palma, CA. They all come with a lifetime warranty. Available in stock and custom-lowered lengths, Progressive Suspension 444 Series and 944 Series shocks are built around the company’s Frequency Sensing Technology (FST). This is a deflective-damping system allowing the shocks to sense the frequency of a bump, large or small, and dynamically adjust accordingly to soak up the hit for a controlled, comfortable ride. The performance is consistent because the shocks are high-

The company’s progressive-rate springs include a topmounted threaded preload adjuster that allows quick, easy fine tuning with a simple twist of the wrist with no special tool required. Black and chrome finishes are available. Progressive Suspension Fork Monotube Kits, the companion upgrade for a Harley’s front suspension, are available in a couple configurations, as well. These state-of-the-art fork cartridge kits are high-pressure nitrogen gas-charged monotube damper cartridges and custom-tuned fork springs available in stock and lowered versions. The kits replace all of the OEM fork internals, converting a stock Harley-Davidson front end to a set of true, highperformance cartridge forks. There’s a fork monotube kit with external preload adjustment available, too. The payoff is a measurable improvement in front end stability, cornering power, bottoming control and resistance to front-brake dive. ■

ne little electrical part can make the difference between whether a motorcycle goes or just sits on the side of the road. A faulty voltage regulator can be especially frustrating because the entire unit has to be replaced. Drag Specialties branded voltage regulators are premium USA-made products that undergo extensive testing to ensure reliability and longevity, so a bike can keep going. Drag Specialties Premium voltage regulators can be used as OE replacements, but they are also a great choice for custom builders and DIY mechanics looking for a reliable and easily-installed voltage regulator to keep an old bike running or help light the spark in a new one. They provide accurately regulated voltage under all electrical loads. In fact, the Drag voltage regulator will work on some very old Harley-Davidson motorcycles, going as far back as the 1958 XL and the 1976 Shovelhead. It is an ideal part for builders putting an old engine in a new chassis, or even for a full restoration build.

was heat. Heat is the worst enemy of electrical components, but it’s also an inevitable by-product of a voltage regulator’s job. Each Premium voltage regulator is designed for superior internal heat management so that it can withstand even the most extreme conditions. The result is that the regulator has better reliability for continued outstanding performance. Drag Specialties offers the Premium voltage regulators in a chrome or black finish for the all-aluminum die-cast housing, and fitments are available for all early- and latemodel applications. In addition to the premium quality of the regulators, each one is housed in Drag Specialties Premium packaging, which makes the product easy to spot at a glance and presents an attractive package that is ready for display. ■

The Drag Specialties Premium voltage regulators are a great upgrade over stock when doing a ground-up custom or a simple rebuild. They’re built to last and provide outstanding performance.

The voltage regulator’s small size belies the huge amount of work that went into its creation. It is the result of two years of design and development, all undertaken with the goal of creating a regulator that has outstanding performance, reliability and heat management. The attention to detail that went into the design did not stop when the final product was approved. During the assembly process, every voltage regulator undergoes three tests to ensure there are no hindrances to its reliability and performance. The assembly happens close to home, too – the voltage regulators are made in the USA, using domestic-made circuit boards, so it is easier for Drag Specialties to manage quality control.

The voltage regulators come in that familiar Drag Specialties blue, black and white packaging.

The brake line kits are a direct replacement of the OE parts, and fit the first time they’re installed with no need for adjusting angles or using universal fittings. Plus, they look great. EBC employs stainless steel for every fitting, which offering high quality in terms of strength and corrosion resistance. Your Harley-Davidson customers will love the custom look and performance of these EBC braided steel lines. The company also produces a complete range of floating rotors for modern Big Twins and some excellent floating rotor conversions for solid rotor applications that will improve your customers’ braking. The solid rotors are made using stainless steel, many with polished stainless steel center hubs. The floating rotors are assembled using the unique EBC SD System square drive button technology. EBC front floating rotors feature five or ten button designs that provide a sturdy looking, robust unit worthy of its heavy duty application. EBC also offers its fully floating brake rotors in either polished stainless or black chrome over stainless finish. The patented SD system buttons, which appear circular, are flat sided and mount into square pockets in the center hub and rotor blade. This allows the rotor blade to expand and contract freely under heavy braking, eliminating brake vibration and rotor distortion. One of the most common braking performance upgrades is adding new brake pads. EBC Brakes’ Semi-Sintered V-Pads are a new blended brake pad that combines the high qualities of an organic brake pad with the endurance and stopping power of a sintered equivalent brake pad. The pads are also very rotor friendly.

CYCLE VISIONS

F

lip open the new 2018 FatBook and look up CycleVisions. You’re going to find more than 200 individual part numbers listed throughout carrying the CycleVisions name.

The lineup includes everything from trick little problem solvers like fender-riser brackets to let riders put big front wheels on a Harley-Davidson and reuse the stock fender; to cleverly thought-out saddlebag mounts to quickly turn a Sportster into a mini-FLT/FLH. Speaking of saddlebags, CycleVisions has extended, custom versions along with rear-fender packages to go with them, and even more kits to put OEM saddlebags on a Softail. Along with all that you’ll find lots of custom lighting, various sissybar and handlebar designs, licenseplate mounts, exhaust tips and much more. It’s an impressive collection of popular selling hardware, the kind of things riders are always asking for. It’s all in the FatBook, available to everyone. All this has been going on since 1996 when CycleVision’s founder, Randy Aron, threw open the doors to his San Diego, CA shop. Right from the start this was much more than just a parts store. In fact, Aron fills a unique dual role as a Drag Specialties dealer and a vendor.

52

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

CycleVisions even offers such trick bits as old school sissy bars. This one is called the Attitude Stick.

CycleVisions is one of those do-it-all places, the kind of motorcycle store where riders know there’s a better-thaneven chance they’ll find what they’re looking for. If, after a trip to CycleVisions, they come away empty handed because what they’ve requested doesn’t exist, there’s a chance that next time they drop by that part will be in the FatBook, too. It isn’t just rider requests fueling all this, either. Aron and the CycleVisions team have built, modified and customized bikes for a long time. They’ve seen it all, and over the years they’ve come up with lots of innovative, good looking and easily installed problem-solvers. Those trick little fender-risers, for instance, were popular sellers from the start. The CycleVisions Forward Control Extension Kits and Go-Forward Floorboard Kits allow riders to move OE Harley-Davidson foot controls and floorboards forward 2 or 3-inches for more leg room and comfort fall. They’re popular, as well, and that’s just the start. The CycleVisions BareBacks are another handy innovation. A quick-detach system for the luggage on almost every Harley model, this unique patented mounting system works with the factory OE saddlebags and can be used with or without mounting hardware for sissybars and backrests.

CYCLE VISIONS

CycleVision Bag Lites add some extra visibility to the rear end of a Bagger, and are a snap to install.

Like everything CycleVisions, they’re crafted from highquality materials, 303 stainless steel in this case. And when the bags are removed (which takes just seconds), there are chromed-aluminum caps that snap over the struts for a clean, tidy look. It’s a neat system. The CycleVisions Bag Lites, available in two- and four-light kits with a chrome or black powder-coat finish, are equally trick. With no visible fasteners, they’re installed by simply drilling a 1¾-inch hole in the saddlebag and popping the lights in place. They’re slick, they’re bright and everything’s included with a run/turn/brake controller just for the Bag Lites. There’s even a quick wiring-disconnect for easy bag removal. CycleVisions’ Lucifer Lights are popular, too. Small and bright (measuring just a half-inch high), they also feature super-bright/two-function LEDs. There’s a lot of Harley-Davidson mix-and-match available with CycleVisions, too, like the easily installed mounting kits to put Harley Batwing or FLTR fairings on most Softail and Dyna models.

The Batwing kits for select Softail-models include adapter brackets that attach to existing OE fairing-supports and the whole thing works with or without engine guards and with no frame modifications. Kits to mount FLTR fairings are just as easily installed and applications for both of these popular conversions cover most Softail and Dyna models. FL riders will want to see those CycleVisions Extended Saddlebags and the Bagger-Tail rear fender kits to go with them. Gel-coated fiberglass with a 4-inch extension, the saddlebags are available with or without exhaust cutouts and they accept stock Harley-Davidson lids and hardware. The matching Bagger-Tail fender completes the look and it comes with filler panels and a recessed pocket for the taillight. And then there are all those kits to put OEM Harley-Davidson hard-side saddlebags on the Softails and Sportsters. More FatBook favorites, they allow the use of standard FLT/FLHT saddlebags and they’re available with a black powder-coat or chrome finish and come with all the necessary hardware and fastening mechanisms. ■

for the last 30 years. It makes sense then that the first products out of the gate for the new Softails are the detachable back rests, with initial fitments for the Softail Deluxe, Heritage Classic, Slim and Street Bob.

The team at Cobra® anticipated the new Milwaukee-Eight engine being used in the just- released Softails, and had already begun the R&D process even before the bikes were introduced, which gave them a jump on the performance aspects of the exhausts. The crew worked just as quickly to develop fitments for detachable backrests and *air intakes so new Softail owners will have an assortment of practical products with which to outfit the 2018 bikes.

The back rests are available in three versions, each in chrome or black. Each comes complete with everything needed for installation in one box. back rests, these fit the Softail Deluxe, Heritage Classic, Slim and Street Bob. Both slip-on models are available in chrome and black. The RPT arrives with the standard 2-inch core, a stainlesssteel screen covered in a bonded E-glass tube. The machined tip uses seven 12-point zinc-plated screws to tie it all together. The NH Series uses a louvered core while the body has a belled steel end to finish off the domed body. Both mufflers have been reworked to enhance the power and sound of the 2018 Softails, and each produces that authentic requisite rumble that seems to be missing with the new engines with stock exhausts.

These slip-ons do more that crank up the volume, they also increase the performance over the stock systems. So, it’s the best of all worlds. Though, of course with a name like Neighbor Haters you can probably guess which slipon is noticeably louder. “Just as we did with the Bagger systems we introduced last year, we took our time to ensure our products not only looked right, but sounded on target and produced class-leading performance,” says Tim McCool, Cobra engineering president. “We think we met all three goals with these initial mufflers. And the detachable back rests are a perfect complement to these bikes.” ■

Scorcher Tires for Harleys

M

ichelin currently produces 29 sizes of Scorcher tires across four versions. Eleven of the 30 new Harley-Davidson models for 2018 leave the factory with Michelin Scorcher tires. Four of the nine Softails have them, as do four of the five Sportsters and all three Street models. That’s nearly 40 percent of the entire Harley lineup fit with Scorchers as original equipment. A Michelin Scorcher is also the factory-approved replacement tire for the most popular Harley-Davidson Touring bikes. Naturally, many riders are looking for Scorchers come replacement time. None of this should be surprising. Harley-Davidson and Michelin co-developed and co-branded these tires back in 2007; since then more than a million Michelin Scorcher tires have been installed on Harley bikes at the factory. Until recently the only source for a fresh set was an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership. No more. Drag Specialties has the full Scorcher lineup now; the Scorcher 11s, 21s, 31s and 32s, opening up a big, new market for dealers now able to supply riders with the tires that came standard on their bikes. With the six new sizes that launched in 2017, there is a Scorcher for almost every application. The Scorcher 11, OE on Street, Sportster, Softail and V-Rod models is especially popular. An all-around performer, the Scorcher 11 incorporates Michelin’s latest radial technology. There’s a stylish semi-slick tread pattern that maximizes the contact patch for excellent grip on dry roads. For grip in the wet, an optimized tread design effectively evacuates water. With compounds derived from years of race-tire experience added, the tires also feature long-life durability and comfort with a highperformance feel, precise handling, easy maneuverability

The popular Scorcher 11 comes as stock on Street, Sportster, Softail and V-Rod models. It provides great grip on dry and wet roads, as well as precise handling and long-life durability.

and impressive agility. Scorcher 11 tires are available in seven front and six rear sizes. The Scorcher 21 is original equipment on the new Street Rod. With a carcass design inspired by Michelin’s hypersport tires, the look of the 21 is traditional cruiser, but the feel is light and nimble with plenty of agility and exceptional handling. Compounded with a mix of silicarich rubber, there’s excellent grip on wet surfaces along with long, even wear. The Scorcher 31, OE on select Dyna and Sportster models, is also the Harley-Davidson approved replacement for most Touring bikes and now standard equipment on the new Sport Glide. With its supple, comfortable ride and specifically engineered profiles, it has become a real favorite in those applications. The 31s are available in seven front and five rear sizes for a wide range of applications. And then there’s the Scorcher 32, tires designed especially for the FatBob. An aggressive reverse tread design distinguishes these Michelins; it’s a generously grooved tread pattern coupled with advanced rubber chemistry to deliver excellent traction on wet or dry roads. There’s great tread life, too, with even wear throughout the tire’s life. All of these tires are available now and represents a great opportunity to offer tires with both the Michelin and Harley-Davidson logos on the sidewalls. It’s the best of both brands, and Drag Specialties has them all. ■

The Complete Upgrade Performance Head Pipes

A proper exhaust upgrade includes changing to new, better flowing head pipes. MagnaFlow’s Pro Duals are a perfect complement to the company’s lineup of performance slip-ons.

For all applications, the Pro Duals feature formed, OEMstyle inlets for a better fit, improved seal and an easier and quicker installation. All this is available in Show Chrome or Deep Black finishes and with bold 2½-inch full coverage heat shields, they add a strong stance to any bike.

W

hile slip-on mufflers are the traditional first step for a Touring model Harley-Davidson rider, they’re just the start of a real custom exhaust.

No question, the right set of mufflers makes a bike look better, sound better and perform better and with MagnaFlow’s lineup, mufflers like the Hitman, Impact, Knockout, Riot and all the rest there are plenty to pick from. However, also adding a new set of head pipes takes things to the next level, and for that there are the Pro Duals. MagnaFlow’s Pro Duals, a set of custom-tuned/equallength head pipes, are that great start to any Harley Touring model exhaust upgrade. They’re available for all the 2009 through 2016 Harley-Davidson Touring models, Tri-Glides and Freewheelers. There are also direct-fit sets for the newest 2017 and later Milwaukee-Eight bikes. Good news for anyone with a late-model MilwaukeeEight, not only do the Pro Duals eliminate the eye-jarring bump at the muffler connection on the right side of those 2017 and later bikes, their size allows the use of all the 2016 and earlier MagnaFlow slip-on styles.

The Pro Duals also provide a nice boost in performance. Custom-tuned and equal-length, these 1¾-inch head pipes create lots of low-end torque and follow through with a strong, seamless progression of power all the way up to the top rpm ranges. The Pro Duals are completely formed from stainless steel, too, a material that conducts less heat then ordinary mild steel, so radiated-heat on the legs of the rider and passenger is reduced. Pro Duals are a great match to almost every Harley Touring model. They look cool and, when coupled up with any of those MagnaFlow slip-ons, there’s a deep, thundering sound. The Pro Duals work with stock or mildly modified engines, and are an ideal match for any seriously tuned engine requiring an enhanced output. MagnaFlow has equipped the pipes with 12mm and 18mm O2 sensor ports for maximum tuning options. Performance slip-ons are often in the sights of a Harley rider. Completing that exhaust upgrade to get the most from those new mufflers requires performance head pipes. For this, MagnaFlow has the Pro Duals to make the bike look better, sound better and perform better. ■

Bluetooth Banter

Talking Technology with SENA

The new SENA 30K communicator creates a “mesh” network that allows an unlimited number of riders within a mile range to connect. Riders can also stream music, take phone calls or listen to GPS navigation.

M

otorcycle riders think of SENA Technologies, Inc. as a dedicated motorcycle brand, but the company is a lot more diversified than that. SENA started in 1998 as a Bluetooth-based solutions company for industrial applications well outside the realm of motorcycles. It wasn’t until 2010 that SENA got into the motorcycle industry with the introduction of the SMH10 Bluetooth headset and intercom. SENA marketing manager Leah Langford explains that their CEO Tae Kim was riding his motorcycle and was using a Bluetooth communication that was on the market, and essentially thought, “I can do this better.”

The SENA 30K and associated smartphone app.

64

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Since that time, SENA has expanded into a wide array of Bluetooth communications tools for riders. For dealers, it means that there are options to fit every type of rider, from commuters to road-trippers. “For us, it’s about the big picture and it’s about community, and anyone who rides is part of that community. It doesn’t matter what clothes you like to wear or what kind of bike you like to ride. At the end of the day, everybody is on two wheels, but I think our extensive line is really a reflection of individuals,” says Langford. Bluetooth technology has come a long way since SENA first built the SMH10 in 2010. SENA products went on to incorporate Bluetooth 4.0, which allows for easy integration with smartphones and other devices like handlebar remotes. SENA’s latest communication device is the 30K. It represents another upgrade in Bluetooth, 4.1 this time, which allows the device to use a new feature called Mesh Intercom Technology. While typical Bluetooth allows a one-to-one connection, Mesh creates a network. Devices like the R10 allow up to 20 connections, but those pairings are daisychained together. With Mesh technology, the 30K is more like a web than a line, and it allows for more connections.

SENA

The S3 is a super low-profile, integrated helmet headset.

The original communicator in the SENA lineup, the SMH10, comes in multiple configurations and features phone capabilities and GPS direction streaming.

The technology has some other pretty cool implications for the 30K. Langford says, “On the 30K, we have a couple of different modes, but one is just one click of a button and it’s almost like a CB radio: you’re instantly talking with an unlimited amount of riders within a mile range. Or you can do a private group, where it’s 16 riders so no one else can listen in, within a mile range. They can piggyback off each other, and essentially have the option of a five-mile range from the front to back rider.” And if one of the riders goes out of range, the Mesh Intercom Technology keeps the rest of the group connected while continuing to search for that rider, automatically reconnecting them to the group when they are back in range. The 30K Audio Multitasking feature means a rider can have a conversation via the Mesh network, stream music from a smartphone, have phone calls and listen to GPS navigation, all without having to switch between channels or devices. The entire unit weighs in at just 2.15 ounces, and it comes with a microphone and dual speakers. The classic SMH10 is still in the lineup, featuring Bluetooth 3.0, a four-way intercom with a half-mile range, phone capabilities and GPS direction streaming. The SMH10R is a low-profile version that includes music sharing. The SMH5 is ideal for a rider and passenger, with two-way intercom

and music sharing. The 3S is an integrated helmet headset with great audio quality, but a narrow controller for a super low profile. Langford says that this diversity of products can be a benefit for dealers, who are better able to give customers exactly what they need. “You can put the 30K in front of them, but somebody might really like that 10R because it’s low-profile. Or they just want to ride as a passenger, so maybe [they’ll want] a 3S or an SMH5,” Langford says. “I think any customer who comes in and is given that kind of nuanced and really knowledgeable perspective about how to better their ride on an individual level is a win-win for everyone.” While all of the customization and technology are the big selling points of SENA products, Langford also notes that there are points to be made on the side of safety, too. “Not only do we have the speakers so you don’t have earbuds or earplugs in, but if you’re riding with someone, you can tell them to watch out for something, or you can hear your GPS directions and not have to constantly look down on your phone to figure out where you are. It allows you to focus more on the road.” ■

FUEL TREATMENT

P R O D U C T

S H O W C A S E

The Fuel Factor

Help Keep Engines Running Clean

C

ustomers can spend a huge amount of time, money and effort tuning each component of their bikes to squeeze out every bit of performance, but it’s all too common to overlook the most important factor – the fuel. Keeping fuel fresh is easy with Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment as it is engineered to stabilize fuel for up to two years, making it ideal for use in equipment that goes into seasonal storage. From keeping fuel fresh in your personal equipment during long-term storage to stabilizing the entire fleet at your dealership, Star Tron has you and your customers covered. Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment‘s unique formula is the ideal way to improve the performance of all engines by improving fuel quality. The proprietary blend of enzymes makes Star Tron a year-round multifunctional fuel treatment. The enzymes allow more oxygen to attach to hydrocarbon fuel molecules, resulting in a more complete burn of the fuel charge. This translates into maximum power, reduced emissions and deposits, crisper throttle response and improved fuel economy. A more complete burn of the fuel charge also helps Star Tron restore much of the power and fuel economy that can be lost when using ethanol-blended fuels. With regular use, Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment keeps engines running clean. If gum or other debris is already present in the fuel tank, injectors or carburetors, or if the engine has carbon deposits, Star Tron’s enzymes break them apart in layers to be eliminated while the engine runs. Riders who don’t use Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment in their bikes on a regular basis may experience a decrease in performance as their engines become “dirty,” the company says. Today’s fuel is less stable than ever before due to the use of various compounds that make it more environmentally sound, but can result in the development of deposits that impact performance and fuel economy at a more rapid pace. When engines get too dirty, they need a boost to blast out these tough deposits, which is why Star Tron Fuel System & Injector Cleaner was developed.

66

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2018

Star Tron Fuel System & Injector Cleaner is engineered to quickly remove even the toughest performance-robbing deposits from carburetors, fuel injectors, fuel pumps, valves, combustion chambers, and piston rings. Star Tron Fuel System & Injector Cleaner’s formula combines a powerful blend of enzymes and high-tech PEA cleaning compounds to restore power to all engines. PEA compounds are extremely effective deposit removers that also keep combustion chambers and all other parts of the engine clean.

Star Tron Fuel System & Injector Cleaner

Clean engines deliver greater throttle response, develop full power, attain maximum fuel economy and avoid issues such as pre-detonation (pinging and knocking) and excessive emissions. Most top-tier fuels contain detergents and other deposit control compounds, but the amounts used may not be sufficient to ensure optimal performance, which is why it’s critical to use Star Tron Fuel System & Injector Cleaner occasionally during the riding season. Each 4-ounce bottle treats 40 gallons of gas, works in all engines and can be used as often as needed. ■

Vance & Hines has another slip-on choice for those all those bikes, too. It’s the Twin Slash 3-inch slip-ons, a great value with a gutsy sound. Available in chrome or with a wrinkle black finish to match the factory-black heat shields in some applications, the mufflers feature a Vance & Hines signature Twin Slash end treatment and they can be fit with either Quiet or Competition baffles.

There are also full-systems to consider. One timeless classic is the Vance & Hines Shortshots Staggered, and on the 2018 Street Bob, Low Rider, Fat Bob, Slim, Deluxe and Heritage Classic (all the possible applications) these pipes can instantly transform a Milwaukee-Eight Softail into a ready-to-go custom. With an aggressive hot-rod sound and sleek, one-piece full coverage heat shields the Shortshots Staggered are another sweet deal. They’re available with chrome or matte black finishes, with full-coverage heat shields and two levels of Quiet Baffles are available to custom-tune the aggressive, hot-rod sound. Another Vance & Hines favorite is the Big Radius 2-into-2. It’s now available for the 2018 Fat Boy and Breakout. Bold and sweeping with “all the right curves in all the right places” as Vance & Hines likes to say, these pipes come wrapped in precision-sculpted heat shields and end with scalloped-cut ends. All that custom-bike styling is available in chrome or matte black and there are Quiet Baffles offered here, as well. ■

N

AMZ Custom Cycle Products, parent company of Badlands, has been busy. Since taking over that Reno, NV company back in December 2013, they’ve turned out some new and innovative modules, and the plans for 2018 are to keep on innovating.

The second new module is an updated version of their famous ATS-03, a self-canceling turn signal module. This module has been around for a long time, working flawlessly and providing riders with self-canceling turn signals.

Countless hours of research, engineering and development have delivered some of the slickest models to date. “Having an engineer on staff has been a game changer,” says Jeff Zielinski, company president and founder. “We do our best to come up with new ideas or improvements on existing ideas, then focus on applications before handing it over to our engineer. His job is to make the magic happen, which in every case he does.”

How could it get better? Well, the existing ATS-03 is an 11-second self-canceling module, where factory modules cancel using a speed sense and a reed switch to keep the signal flashing for longer periods of time when needed. The new ATS-03-S modules will work the same way as the factory design, canceling using a speed sense. And since Badlands offers plug-n-play technology there’s nothing extra you need to do when hooking one up. Simply remove the defective factory version and plug in the Badlands replacement.

The company keeps the product flow steady by keeping all harness assembly, soldering, potting and final testing in-house. New for 2018 modules include a group based on the ILL-01 platform, which provides running lights, brake lights and turn signal features to rear turn signals converted to red lenses or red LEDs. All this is done using only one power and one ground wire per side. The new modules offer the same features as traditional ILL-01 modules, but with a modern twist of sequential-flashing that allows riders to use three red LEDs per side for a sequential flash.

The Badlands brand from NAMZ has added to its lineup a number of electronic modules for custom lighting controls.

Two module styles are offered – static and dynamic. In the static version each light will stay on until all three are lit before starting the sequence over again, in the dynamic version each light will shut off when the next one turns on before starting the sequence again. The modules work with any red LED on the market today and there are also applications for Indian and Victory models.

Badlands has also made a change to its popular line of ILL-PRO-III self -canceling run/brake/ turn-signal modules. For added visibility they’ve incorporated modern, automobile LED technology to shut off the running light when the turn signal is flashing. When installed properly the front and rear signals will now shut down the running light feature on the turn signal that’s flashing thus making it more visible and increasing safety.

There is a lifetime warranty on the modules feature (except LE-01 and LE-02 units), a full warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. A sticker on each module shows that lifetime warranty and allows NAMZ to track every module produced. ■

Bright Business

Celebrating 15 Years of Custom Lighting Custom Dynamics turn signals sure stand out!

Company founder Dave Pribula launched the business after seeing an LED setup on a bike in Myrtle Beach. lean, simple LED turn signals from Custom Dynamics carry a small price tag, but their impact is large, and not only for the bike on which they’re installed. This best-selling motorcycle lighting innovation has been instrumental in bringing Custom Dynamics to its 15-year anniversary this year. While operational lighting such as signals and headlights has been pivotal to Custom Dynamic’s growth, company founder Dave Pribula started out producing decorative LED lighting on a whim, with little intention of going into business. “Back in 2002 my wife Lynn and I went to Myrtle Beach on our bikes with friends, and I saw a guy selling colorful LEDs, six lights for $349,” Pribula says. “When it got dark, they lit up! I thought it was really cool and I had to get them. Something just clicked with me.” Not long after, Pribula took to the Internet to find more of the same. Failing that, he began researching components to make them himself. Electrical engineers like Dave are undaunted by such things; he worked for IBM in New York state developing test systems for fiber optics and

lasers before relocating to North Carolina with Phillips Electronics. LED light strips? That’s totally doable. Before long he’d put together his own decorative LED light kit, and made plans to start selling them online, but there was one problem, he’d never developed a website before. He soon had his products up for sale under the Custom Dynamics name, but the sales didn’t come pouring in. Maybe that was because the site appeared on page 110 in Google searches. Undaunted, a crash course in website optimization followed and search placement began to improve. The first order came when Custom Dynamics finally got to page one. It was Christmas Eve 2002. By 2004, Custom Dynamics was at the top of the list and the Pribulas were operating a demanding home-based business that threatened to push the limits of their capabilities. The turning of the tide came in 2005, when they moved into a stand-alone building and Pribula left his full-time engineering job. Rather than bet the future on a cosmetic product, even one that also addressed visibility, Custom Dynamics

debuted operational designs in 2005. “That’s where the growth has really come from, and where it still is,” Pribula says. “People are willing to pay for something that makes them much safer on the road day and night. A good headlight, a good turn signal, a good brake light.” It’s common in motorcycle accidents for car drivers to say, “I never saw the bike?” Well, if Pribula has anything to say about it, that phrase will be disappearing from accident reports. Motorcycle visibility is its stated mission, and the company offers easy solutions that are affordable and good looking. The company continued to outgrow space after space until four years ago when it bought land, designed a building and built it from scratch in Youngsville, NC. Before long, warehouse square footage was doubled and more workers were hired. A substantial vertical acquisition in 2009 brought off-site manufacturing capability. Custom Dynamics products are assembled at the Youngsville facility using materials and components from suppliers that are specialists in their own areas, and that meet or exceed the company’s high standards. Stringent quality control testing is done when components come in from suppliers and again on finished assemblies. The resulting increase in production opened the door to broader distribution through Drag Specialties, and Custom Dynamics has been exclusive with Drag since 2010. Reps and dealers alike have met Dave, Lynn and business

manager Megan Barrett at Drag showcases and NVP. Dave and Megan agree that such opportunities have increased the company’s visibility and aided growth. “The showcases are important to us,” Barrett says. “We get to talk with the reps about new products and get feedback from both dealers and reps. It energizes us to be with them.” Industry and consumer shows also provide input for product development. Pribula says doing installations allows them to see product combinations on many different bikes. The company also recently added two in-house road reps of to assist in product education and sales, though Barrett says people are more educated about LEDs now than they used to be. “Now people know that LEDs draw less power and turn on faster, so what I hear instead is, ‘Which one fits my bike?’” she says. To support reps and assist dealers, Custom Dynamics offers a variety of product display programs. There are flyers on all of them and most have an easy buy in. The

popular display many shops start with includes taillights, turn signals and the SMART Triple Play® module. “Bright, colorful LEDs and push-button interaction gets attention,” Barrett says. “Once a customer sees the demo display, they want to learn more.” Supporting customers with product info, tech support and warranty concerns is also a major focus at Custom Dynamics, in fact, it’s an admitted hot button topic for Pribula. He insists that every customer contact is addressed in a timely manner and tracked until it’s brought to resolution. Training for in-house customer service reps is ongoing and intense because electrical modifications can get complicated, especially when bike owners have added other electrical components. “If a customer reaches out today, they will be taken care of today. Period,” said Dave. “You can’t close every contact the same day but we respond and make progress. We pride ourselves on taking care of our customers.” It all starts with quality products and at Custom Dynamics that’s mainly two complimentary lines — functional LED lighting and a category of electrical modules—with the emphasis on visibility for increased safety. They still make decorative lighting, too, and in recent years have added air horns featuring strong brackets, a sleek design and an approachable price. A few products for Indians are now entering the line, including headlights, passing lamps and strobe modules, but the primary focus has been Harley-Davidson fitments Wraparound LED turn signals are regulation compliant and aid visibility, but are hardly noticed unless lit.

and each new model year presents potential changes. The 2018 Harley Softail line presented a multitude of challenges and new Custom Dynamics products are being developed for those models. The same thing happened in 2014 when the Harley factory altered Big Twin fairings. Because change is inevitable, it offers opportunity for collaboration on new product. At Custom Dynamics the division of labor is clear: Pribula comes up with the concept, picks the LEDs, designs the circuit and decides how the product should perform. Barrett’s input is in style and design. Pribula also credits Barrett with building the brand so Custom Dynamics is the name customers think of first. Pribula also credits the company’s success to its high quality, high tech products, lighting that not only performs, but looks great and works well on the bike. In addition, the company offers excellent customer service, technical support and a lifetime warranty on LED failure, and five-year warranty on modules. “We want our products to be trouble free, so you never have to buy it again until technology changes and we improve the products,” Pribula says, “or until you get another bike.” ■ Owner Dave Pribula, right, is hands-on with product development.

CABLES & CLUTCHES

Celebrating 70 Years Quality From the Beginning

A family-owned business from the start, Barnett is now into its third generation of mechanical innovators and just like Charlie did it back in ’48, everything is still manufactured in the USA.

It’s a generational thing: Current company CFO, Colleen Barnett-Taylor as a child, posing with her dad and company founder, Charlie Barnett.

The motorcycle man who started it all back in 1948, Charlie Barnett.

B

arnett Tool & Engineering has been a go-to source for Harley-Davidson parts for seven decades now, beginning way back in 1948 when Charlie Barnett began making motorcycle spares in his Huntington Park, CA garage. It started with a simple but inventive cable clamp (the #37, still in the catalog), but before long levers, throttle assemblies, handlebars, cables and clutch plates were added, and it didn’t take long for word to get out – Barnett was the guy to see. The company is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and riders and techs in the know are still heading to Barnett for equipment worth having. Drag Specialties, celebrating its own 50th anniversary, is your source for all-things Barnett. When you see one of these on a bike, you can be sure that motorcycle is running with high-quality, American-made parts.

Barnett cables and throttleby-wire extensions.

When it comes to those cables, Barnett has it all. No matter what year or model, if it’s a Harley there’s a good chance you’ll find the cable you need. Stock or custom-length, Barnett has cables for Harleys from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s right through to the newest 2018 models.

Most cables are offered with choices of traditional black vinyl, classic stainless braid, a Platinum Series silver-plated braid or black-on-black Stealth Series casings. For a smooth pull and reduced effort, all the ’87 and later clutch cables come standard with a High Efficiency nylon-coated and silicone-lubed inner wire. Barnett also has late model plug & play throttle-by-wire extensions, in 8-inch, 12-inch, 15-inch and 20-inch lengths, with the double-harness versions for 2016 and up applications. Not much is missing here. When it comes to its clutch lineup, Barnett was an early adopter of Kevlar friction material for motorcycle clutches and now those aluminum friction plates feature wider drive tabs to reduce wear on the baskets. With the CF Series they introduced carbon fiber, and in 2013 the popular Scorpion Lock-Up Clutches were re-designed to fit under stock primary covers. Barnett has a range of drop-in Extra Plate Kits, too, increasing surface area by 11 percent to 28 percent, depending on the application. Each kit is custom-measured for stack height and comes with tempered steel drive plates, and in some kits, heavyduty clutch springs. There are custom primary covers and clear, see-through derby covers for all this, too. Those clear derby covers are especially nice showing off the anodized good looks of a Scorpion upgrade. ■

he sound of a well-tuned, V-twin motor is music all on its own. However, many customers like to bring along their own tunes, especially on a long ride or tour. That’s where J&M Corporation joins the party. For 40+ years, the company has manufactured high quality motorcycle audio products for motorcyclists. Well known for its ROKKER series of audio components, J&M proudly offers the new J&M Rokker XXR Extreme custom installation kits for 2014 to 2018 Harley-Davidson Baggers.

This provides the on-highway volume, clarity and overall performance that most riders are looking for in an audio system. The whole system is compatible with TechnoResearch’s digital technician (also available from Drag Specialties), which can be used if any issues pop up with the stock Harley-Davidson radio during installation. The TechnoResearch tool can be used to return the Harley Infotainment system back to its factory configuration. J&M’s fully weatherproof 6.71-inch and 5x7 Rokker XX speakers feature a high-tech woven-fiber woofer cone, and a massive high-density high-flux strength Neodymium magnet structure with perimeter positioned voice coil cooling vents. This provides for excellent heat dissipation when operating at high volume levels for extended periods. The custom designed grill mounted dome tweeters are also weatherproof and shockproof for maximum long-term durability. Many different system configurations are available along with some that allow for removal and/or reinstallation of the rear tail trunk, without affecting the operation or overall performance of the remaining components. Each of these Rokker XXR Extreme custom installation kits are engineered to be 100 percent plug-and-play installation and to maintain the complete integrity of the Harley Davidson internal wiring harness. The Complete Package Making Bar Swaps a Cinch

A

handlebar swap is a sure fire way to really change up the look of a bike. Just remove the stock bars, bolt on a sweet set of custom ape hangers or some other model and throw on a set of grips. From meh to comfort and style in no time, right? Not so fast. You see, those custom bars might also require the addition of custom control cables, and that new configuration might call for a new handlebar riser to tie everything together. Getting everything dialed in just right quickly becomes a delicate dance of art and geometry. LA Choppers is here to take the guesswork out of installing a new set of bars by offering a huge range of bars from which to choose, a complete lineup of riser styles and all the necessary custom cables for the complete package. The company even has a website (www.handlebarcables.com) that can help dealers determine exactly what wires, cables and lengths are needed for a long list of handlebar models. Simply input the bike model and year, select the handlebar brand and model, and then style and size. The site then lists all the related cabling kits and their respective Drag Specialties part numbers. It’s one-stop shopping that can help build an order list that is Drag rep ready. For instance, a customer comes in wanting to clean up the look of his 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide by installing a set of 14-inch LA Choppers Twin Peaks touring handlebars. Theses are bars built for highway comfort, with the perfect pullback angle and wrist setup. Compatible with OE heated grips and throttle-by-wire applications, they’re popular Bagger bars. Only at 14 inches, those Twin Peaks are going to need a cable kit to replace the stock setup. Simply input all the necessary information into the website and up pops a

Evos in the OldBook New Parts in a New Format

OldBook family, the Harley-Davidson Evo, there’s a lot to list. From crate-replacement engines to nearly everything required to rebuild an original, it’s all there. Also look to the OldBook for those must-have service consumables for the Evos, absolutely necessities like replacement brakes and cables, wheel bearings, axles and all the rest. As these parts are being dropped out of the factory’s OE inventory offerings, Drag Specialties has stepped up and added more of them than ever.

The 2018 OldBook will now feature everything for Evolution-powered HarleyDavidsons, along with all those other classic V-twin models. The new catalog also has the familiar FatBook-style product listing format and table of contents.

I

t’s official. With the 2018/2019 edition of the Drag Specialties OldBook, everything for the Evolution bikes can now be found right alongside what’s available for all those other Harley-Davidson classics, the Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads and Ironhead XLs. It’s been 35 years since the first Evolution-engine Harley left the factory, 19 years since the last one left, a 1999 FXR 4, a bike badged as a 2000 model. That FXR 4, by the way, has become quite a collectible piece. Unmistakable in its bright yellow or orange colors, only a few hundred were made. While that FXR 4 was produced in low numbers, there are countless other Evo-powered bikes still on the road today and now the parts, accessories and custom-upgrades for them all is in the OldBook. Adding the Evo isn’t the only OldBook change for 2018/2019. The OldBook has now become a two-year edition. Add-ins, coming on an almost daily basis, will be listed in the monthly Skinnys, on DragNetWeb and scheduled into a yearly OldBook Update. There’s also a new, more familiar format to all of this. In place of the separate model-sections of previous OldBooks, content broken down into Knucklehead applications, Panhead applications and so on, now the OldBook has the familiar FatBook format. The new design is separated by product types; Windshields & Fairings, Seats & Sissybars, Engines and so on that have their own, easy-to-navigate sections. Applications for everything available in each section are listed by model and year, and when it comes to that newest member of the

everything else. In short, if it’s for an Evo, whether it’s a custom accessory, some hot-rod performance equipment or a stock replacement, the 2018/2019 OldBook has become the place to look. In celebration of Drag Specialties’ 50th Anniversary the 2018/2019 OldBook has also become a nostalgic look back over the years. Both covers and the opening pages for all 19 product sections feature a Drag Specialties/FatBook/ OldBook cover-bike custom from years past. There are classic builds by Don Hotop, Donnie Smith, Arlen Ness, Eddie Trotta, Rick Fairless, Brian Klock, Tuff Cycle, NYC Choppers, and more. There are Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovels and Ironhead XLs, customs and restorations showcasing everything the OldBook is about. Including, starting this year, Evos. It’s out now.

SUSPENSION

Adjustable Suspension Options

Drag Specialties replacement shocks are an affordable, easy way to refresh the suspension without too much hassle. They come in Drag’s Premium Packaging, which is perfect for merchandizing and display.

A

nyone who has ridden a motorcycle with worn out or sub-par shocks probably remembers the ride for all the wrong reasons. Keeping comfortable with the right suspension is imperative for a good day in the saddle, but that doesn’t mean it has to be an expensive undertaking.

Riders who want some additional adjustability might be more interested in the Drag Specialties Premium ride-height adjustable shocks. They are available in 11inch, 12-inch and 13-inch lengths, and the ride height can be adjusted plus or minus half an inch from the starting size.

Drag Specialties replacement shocks are an affordable, easy way to refresh the suspension without too much hassle. Available in both black and chrome finishes, the replacement shocks come in a variety of lengths to suit most riding styles, including 11-inches to 13-inches long, plus half-inch increments. The shocks are sold in pairs and arrive in attractive ready-to-display packaging.

Like Drag’s replacement shocks, the Premium ride-height adjustable shocks are available in both chrome and black and have a built-in spring pre-load adjuster. They are also built with nitrogen-charged steel monotube damper bodies and hard chrome-plated shafts. The dual-rate progressive wound springs keep the ride smooth, even over bumpy terrain.

The replacement shocks feature nitrogen-charged steel monotube damper bodies with hard chrome-plated shafts. The progressively wound springs ensure a smooth, comfortable ride, and adjustable spring preload makes fine-tuning easy.

The chrome shocks feature chrome springs and damper bodies with clear anodized end caps and eyelets. The black shocks, on the other hand, are black throughout, including the end caps and eyelets. Like their replacement shock counterparts, they mount with existing hardware.

Making the switchover from the previous shocks on the motorcycle is simple, since the Drag replacement shocks utilize the existing hardware. Dealers should note, though, that Harley-Davidson stock upper shock mount covers will not fit with these shocks.

Drag Specialties Premium adjustable ride-height shocks fit a similar applications list as the Drag replacement shocks, so check the FatBook and OldBook for details and part numbers.

There are a lot of late model as well as early model fitments, so dealers can find the Drag replacement shocks in both the FatBook and the OldBook. The 11-inch, 12-inch and 13-inch lengths fit 1980-2016 FLHT/FLHR/FLTR and 1991-2017 FXD applications. Meanwhile, the 11½-inch and 12½-inch lengths fit the 2004-2017 XL. 94

Heads Up!

The 2018 Helmet Line is Here

T

he year 2018 heralds LeMans Corporation’s fifth year as the exclusive US distributor for Biltwell helmets, hard parts and safety gear, and Drag Specialties is the place to get it all.

Biltwell’s 2018 helmet line is robust, with four open- and full-face models available in a color range comprising 20 hand-painted gloss, flat, metallic and limited edition graphic flavors. Available in sizes XS through XXL, every model in Biltwell’s lineup excels in its sub-category in terms of fit, function and style.

Bonanza

Bike riders looking for greater safety in a no-frills full-face helmet swear by Biltwell’s Gringo and Gringo S. Both models feature an injection-molded ABS outer shell for durability and expanded polystyrene internal safety liner for impact attenuation. A removable hand-stitched comfort liner with brushed fleece Lycra and open-cell foam padding assures moisture wicking and breathability. Gringo S differs from its stable mate by the inclusion of a molded polycarbonate shield. This shield is removable for cleaning, and Drag stocks a wide range of tinted, gradient and mirror accessory shields for daytime riding. They come in 10 colors and six sizes for each model. Both models comply with US DOT safety standards for street motorcycle operation.

Lane Splitter Introduced in 2017, Biltwell’s Lane Splitter boasts the same proven manufacturing technologies, comfort and safety benefits as the company’s other helmets, but in a more aggressive silhouette for two-wheeled pursuits. Bonanza is Biltwell’s open-face workhorse in the DOTcompliant helmet race, and it’s a winner. Like every model in the Biltwell range, Bonanza features an injection-molded ABS plastic outer shell. The benefits of this material are consistent density and wall thickness for lightness and durability, and a super-smooth surface for superior paint finishing. Biltwell prides itself on setting new color trends, and this year’s line does not disappoint. New Bonanza colors for 2018 include Safe-T yellow and Sierra Green metallic in addition to the classics.

Gringo and Gringo S

In a nod to the growing global prominence of the brand, Biltwell’s Lane Splitter is both DOT and European ECE certified. Discrete front, side and rear vents with stainless-steel screen detailing channel cool airflow through the helmet’s EPS safety liner to reduce moisture and enhance all-day riding comfort. The helmet’s molded polycarbonate shield is CE certified, and can be removed for cleaning or replacement. ■

A Combination Taillight with LEDs

K

en Nagai’s design style has a distinct flair, and the latest product from Ken’s Factory is proof. The Neo-Fusion Bagger combo taillight (p/n 2010-1360) is now available from Drag Specialties, adding another option to the Neo-Fusion line. The taillight integrates the turn signals and brake light into LED halo-style lights. On each of the two lights, the outer ring on the 2-inch lens will flash amber for turn signals, while the wide center shines red. The two lights are contained in billet aluminum housings that feature a dimpled design. They are connected via an aluminum cover that incorporates the OEM license plate lighting and provides more of the artistic flair typical of the Neo-Fusion family of products. The Neo-Fusion Bagger combo taillight is available in a black machine finish with raw aluminum contrast cuts as well as a polished aluminum finish. The taillight will fit 2009 to 2013 FLTRX, 2015 to 2017 FLTRX/S, 2009 to 2017 FLHX/S and 2017 FLHRXS models.

The Neo-Fusion Bagger combo taillight provides a distinctive, custom look to the tail-end of those FL model Harley-Davidsons.

Installation is an easy enough process – the Neo-Fusion taillight will bolt right on with the OEM hardware. The Neo-Fusion line from Ken’s Factory features contrastcut designs that blend modern styling and retro cues. Performance Upgrades for Evos and Twin-Cams

A

swap to anything but the mildest-lift performance cam in a Harley-Davidson Evo or early Twin-Cam requires more than just that cam. High-performance valve-springs are needed here as well and Kibblewhite Precision Machining, Inc. (KPMI) has them. The Beehive Spring Kits are performance upgrades with a Posi-Loc™ difference. Not only are these kits matched to high-lift demands, they significantly reduce valvetrain mass and their progressively wound ovate wire beehive style springs remain stable over a broad range of frequencies. With the KPMI Beehives, the springs won’t drive themselves, induce float or upset valvetrain dynamics. Two kits are offered to fit all 7mm and 5/16-inch Evo and Twin Cam applications and they’ll work with cam-lifts from stock to a big .630-inch. Then there’s that KPMI Posi-Loc technology. This unique retention system was designed

to ensure a secure, non-slip keeper location on the valve stems. With KPMI’s precise machining tolerances on the spring retainers themselves, and with Posi-Loc shoulders added at the bottom of the retainer tapers, the keepers are kept absolutely secure, locked in place under all conditions. With Posi-Loc, the keepers simply cannot shift out of position and change their location, even under the most severe, high-load/high rpm situations. ■

ne of the problems with solar charging is that once the sun goes down your customers might have no idea what their battery status is or how well it is charged.

Those days are no more! The new OptiMate Solar line features a smart charger monitor that provides battery status information around the clock. Charging info is available when it is receiving a charge during the day, and when the battery is at rest overnight. The LED panel includes one Solar Charge light and three battery monitor lights. When the sun shines the Solar Charge light will blink, confirming a controlled charge is passing into the battery, while one of the three status lights indicates charge progress. When night falls, this smart charger monitor changes into a low-power monitor with one of the three battery status lights blinking every three seconds, indicating how well the battery is charged.

The OptiMate Solar provides battery status information while charging both in the daylight and at night, long after the sun has gone down.

It does not matter if the sun is shining or not, the OptiMate Solar charge-monitor controller always displays your customer’s battery status. No more nighttime guessing. volution-engine HarleyDavidsons and Evo-style XLs had a good, long run. In production for almost two decades, and gone for almost as long, they’ve been around long enough to find their way into the OldBook this year.

Feuling’s *Reaper camshafts provide a nice supply of extra power for Evolution-powered Harley-Davidson models, including those popular Sportsters.

Far from being relegated to antique status, Evos and Evo-style Sportsters are still an important part of today’s scene, especially when it comes to customs. While the bright lights are on that latest Harley engine, there are plenty of Evos out there, too, and Feuling Parts has a range of products for making an Evo or Evo-XL stand up and be noticed – cam kits especially. Feuling’s *Reaper® Series camshafts, favorites in the Twin Cam and most recently Milwaukee-Eights, are known power-builders in the Evos, as well. There’s a wide range of grinds and lifts to choose from.

When upgrading the cams in an Evo bike, consider Feuling’s Beehive valve springs as a smart replacement for the OE springs.

Mild to wild, from a .518 cam to a big .594, it’s all here. There is a nice selection for the XLs, too, everything from direct bolt-ins for taking a relatively stock Sportster to the next level, to high-lift cams engineered to make the most of high-compression pistons and big-valve/ported heads. Feuling has everything to complete these packages. Beehive® valve springs, a smart replacement for tired OE springs and a necessity with high-lift cams, are available in Econo, Endurance and High Load versions. They’re all made from premium, stress relieved conical ovate wire, with a nitrided surface, heat treatment, shot-peening and a Nano Peen™ polish added to the High Load versions. Coupled with Feuling’s custom-machined lightweight retainers, they reduce valve weight for quicker revving and smoother motion overall and the kits include the springs, retainers, spring seats, shims, valve locks and premium Viton seals. Add in Feuling’s pushrods, performance lifters and hardware kits, the cylinder stud and head-bolt packages and full external fastener sets, and any Evo or Evo-style XL gets a new lease on life. Out of production for 19 years now, it’s a safe bet these are engines in need of a little attention. ■

WHEELS

Custom Rollers

Two New Unique Wheel Styles

W

heels make the custom and if there’s anyone who knows that, it’s the Arlen Ness team. Good looking customs rolling on good looking wheels have come out of this northern California shop for decades. Now, Ness has two more highly styled wheels in that custom mix – the new 7-Valve and the Pro Cross – and both of them are available from Drag Specialties.

The new Pro Cross wheel from Arlen Ness The 7 Valve wheel in chrome

Undeniably good looking, there’s also function built into all these custom wheels. The lightweight wheels also feature the exclusive Ness Cartridge Hubs, which makes these wheels quicker and easier to install and ensures optimum radial and lateral runout accuracy. The 7-Valve, with its tapered and sculpted spokes, and the race-inspired Pro Cross are both offered in 21-inch, 23-inch and 26-inch front sizes, and 17- and 18-inch rears. Applications for the fronts cover all the 2008 and up ABS and non-ABS FLTR/FLHT/FLHR models. For the rears, it’s the 2009 and later FLTs, ABS and non-ABS. Both wheel styles are precision machined from radial forged 6061-T6 aluminum which assures realworld durability, and are structurally tested to meet or exceed the DOT, JAS and TÜV international load ratings. Both styles are available in chrome or black anodized.

Both wheels are designed for a quick, easy, correct mount with the Ness Cartridge Hub. Custom machined billet aluminum, the cartridge-design hub comes with both wheel bearings installed and pre-set assuring radial and lateral accuracy. The hub kit mounts to the Ness rim in minutes, its lightweight coped design adding form to the function. All the hubs are available with either chrome or black anodized finishes.

Incidentally, when you’re talking to riders about new wheels – especially the 23-inchers –let them know about Legend Suspensions now has the AXEO high-performance cartridge kit Legend Suspensions’ AXEO for use with 23-inch wheels, a great fit for the new Arlen Ness wheels. 23, a high-performance front suspension system The 7-Valve features a designed specifically for clean seven-spoke design use on baggers using a 23-inch front wheel. that is a cut above an ordinary mag wheel. Each of those tapered and sculpted spokes features a cut-out center that not only trims away metal, it cuts visual weight. There are also large CNC-machined pockets machined into the lip of the rim between the spokes. It’s an attractive detail, and the 7-Valve has an attractive price to match. The race-inspired Pro Cross nicely rides the line between track and custom. The Pro Cross blends performance with a luxury look, every one of its crisscrossed 14 spokes custom sculpted, a detail also carried down into the rim.

Kits include a pair of mono-tube, dual-chambered fork damping cartridges, two top-out springs and two travellimit collars. It’s all easily installed to improve the stability, the cornering performance and traction of the bike. It will also smooth out the ride, eliminate front-end dive during aggressive braking and reduce the chance of dragging the floorboards or foot pegs. ■

Belt-Drive Shovel

Primary Upgrades for a Classic

Although it’s been more than three decades since a Shovelhead engine rolled off of Harley-Davidson’s assembly line, those motors are more popular than ever. BDL has a number of belt-drive primaries and clutches for the Shovelhead, whether it’s the heart of a ground-up custom, or the center of a careful restoration.

T

he Harley-Davidson Shovelhead has had a good, long run, one that looks like it’ll keep going for some time yet.

of the more popular choices in all this is the EVB-3T-4 kit, or the BB version using BDL’s lock-up ball bearing clutch pressure plate in place of a coil-spring setup.

Despite the fact that it’s been more than three decades since the last one left the factory, Shovelheads are still very much part of the V-twin picture. Sometimes it comes in the form of a classic restoration for Sunday afternoons, or as the base motorcycle and/or engine and transmission for a retro custom.

One of BDL’s original enclosed primary drives, the EVB3T-4 and BB versions are designed as bolt-in upgrades requiring only minor inner-primary massaging for interior clearance. Applications cover the 1970 through 1983 rear chain 4-speed Shovelhead models, and everything needed is included.

In either case, that still-distinguished powerplant and its drivetrain will need some attention – at the very least a careful rebuild, most probably an update where it’s warranted. If it’s the latter, and a modern-design belt-drive primary and upgraded clutch are needed to replace worn out original parts, take a look at Belt Drives Limited.

Kits include the front pulley, a belt, the clutch hub, clutch hub basket and a full Kevlar clutch set made up with seven friction plates, seven steel plates and one thick steel backing plate. The systems now come with BDL’s Quiet Clutch technology, too, and everything is precision machined.

BDL has been manufacturing primary belt-drives for Shovelheads since those bikes were new. There are enclosed systems that neatly tuck in behind OE primary covers to update the drive, while maintaining a stock outward appearance. The company also has open systems with all the bells and whistles right out there in plain view. Don’t forget the tried-and-true Shovelhead belt-drives that have been favorites for years, as well as the new-design/ new-technology BDL setups for the Shovelhead. The company has a big range of 4-speed, 5-speed and early-year rear belt-drive Shovelhead applications. One

The coil-spring pressure plates feature nine shoulder bolts and springs for precise adjustment and even spring pressure. The BB version adds ball-bearing lock up performance to all this, and it all neatly fits inside a stock primary cover. Riders after a no-nonsense/all-performance/custom-look open-belt primary for their Shovelhead will want to look at BDL’s SH-500 and SHS-600 kits. Open drives with reinforced 2-inch belts, these kits fit the 1970 through 1978 models. The SH-500 comes with a motor plate that bolts to the engine and transmission, while the SHS-600 Shorty kit only has a transmission mount plate that leaves the

The latest in a long line of BDL drives, both kits come with a number of significant advantages. Their reinforced 2-inch belts were developed specifically to handle the high torque and horsepower produced by today’s hotrodded Shovelheads. The billet motor plates are bulletproof and the kits are designed to use the newer 1990 through 2006 Harley-Davidson starter. A BDL ball bearing lock-up clutch is standard, too. It’s a clutch setup offering up to 30 percent more contact surface, reduced lever pull, smoother transitions, quiet operation and strong engagement. It all allows the 4-speed Shovel to come off the line with authority. Many of today’s riders are looking to the Harley-Davidson Shovelhead as a popular pick, decades after the last one was built, an engine discontinued years before some of these riders were born. ■

PISTONS

S H O W C A S E

Heavy-duty Hardware Tough Twin-Cam Pistons

K

B Pistons has introduced a new line of pistons for Harley-Davidson Twin Cam applications. The Super Duty piston series provides premium performance and protection even under severe operating conditions. The Super Duty pistons come standard with Line2Line skirt coating technology. The abradable coating is applied to a thickness of the piston to wall clearance, which is roughly 0.003-inch. The specialized coating abrades (or wears) on start-up, providing the perfect fit for each cylinder. Line2Line technology eliminates piston rock for the best possible ring seal and there will be no piston slap noise. Improved efficiency, lower friction and protection against scuffs and excess wear are other benefits of UEM’s Line2Line coating. The pistons have a dome shape to accept “bathtub” 85cc or “tear drop” 95cc heads. The crowns and top ring groove are both hard anodized. This process aids in heat deflection and prevention of corrosion from alcohol fuels,

The new Super Duty pistons from KB Pistons/UEM feature a specialized coating that helps provide the perfect fit for each cylinder, eliminating piston rock and improving ring seal.

and it prevents the top ring from micro welding to the groove. Because the ring groove maintains a flat and smooth surface, the ring seal is optimized. The complete KB Super Duty piston kit includes pistons, rings, pins and locks. Applications are available for a variety of big cubic-inch Twin Cam engine applications that use the standard 4.937-inch cylinder length. ■

Performance Brake Pads and Rotors

U

When your customers pair up a set of DP Brakes and one of its stainless steel brake rotors, it’s assured they’re going to get premium stopping power and upgraded braking performance.

pgrading to DP brake pads is a popular move by Harley-Davidson riders. The benefits of those DP Brakes pads are well known, the performance is strong and fade free, the braking is quiet, the pads are easy on the rotors and they operate virtually dust free. All this means no mess to clean up around the calipers, fork legs and wheels, and those pads really last. DP brake pads have proven themselves to outlive OE three-to-one. How’s that for an impressive list of attributes? Even better? The cost for all this is no more than any other premium brake pads available. The DP957, DP962, DP986 and DP987 pads cover all the 2000 and later Harley-Davidson calipers. Combining those pads with new DP Brakes’ stainless-steel rotors is a natural. Introduced back in 2013, the lineup for these bolt-for-bolt OE replacements has recently been expanded to cover front fitments for FLHT, FLHX, FLTRX and FLHR models through 2018.

So between the original applications and all these new ones there are plenty of fitments, all produced from high-quality 410 stainless steel, laser cut for a precise fit and Blanchard ground for true flatness and a great looking finish. Just like DP pads, the rotors are designed to provide Harley riders with an improved feel, increased stopping power, decreased stopping distance and an overall upgrade in their bike’s braking performance. And, they’re made in the USA. ■

LUBRICANTS

First Fire-Ups

Lubricating a Freshly Rebuilt Engine

When it comes to breaking in a freshly rebuilt motor, Revolution Performance’s Flat Tappet Oil helps all those internal parts to mate up and wear in for optimum performance and power.

P

rotecting an engine from wear is at the top of the list when it comes to choosing an oil-blend to pour into it. That’s the reason why so many Harley-Davidson owners have made the switch to synthetics. Those modern lubricants, besides being long lasting and doing an admirable job of lowering operating temperatures, are super slippery with excellent wear-protection properties. But for a new freshly rebuilt engine, however, all that protection is exactly what you don’t want. Why so? With a fresh engine, say the techs at Revolution Performance, a certain, small amount of “polishing and matching” is necessary as all those new internal engine components get to know each other and play nice. The piston rings and cylinder bores have to bed-in and match themselves to each other to achieve an optimum seal. Likewise, camshaft lobes and cam followers have to mate properly, polishing away any minute high spots in the early going. With an oil tank filled with synthetics from the beginning, all that may require many, many miles of running, or it might never occur at all. The result of that would be unacceptably high oil consumption for the life of the engine and a power level never let to reach its peak. It’s for these very reasons that Revolution Performance recommends the use of a break-in oil in every fresh build.

110

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2018

And, the Break-In, Flat Tappet Oil they use and endorse (p/n 3601-0352) delivers on everything required. First of all, with reduced friction modifiers it allows piston rings and cylinder bores to wear in and match each other for a good seal, while maintaining adequate short-term wear protection. The break-in oil also has higher levels of phosphorous and zinc in its composition, important additives to protect splash-lubricated/high-stress sliding surfaces as they achieve a match. And of course, the break-in oil also has adequate film strength to protect the crankshaft and rod bearings while all this is going on. How long should break-in oil be left in a fresh engine? That depends on the surface finishes of the internal components and their assembly tolerances. It’s best to consult with the engine builder and/or the parts manufacturers for their recommendations. In either case, the new engine should be run under light to medium loads during break in, avoiding all conditions that could lead to high operating temperatures. With break in complete, the oil and filter should be changed, it’s also a good practice to change the first non-break-in oil and filter after a short time to flush away any remnants of the original oil and remaining bedding-in debris from the engine, say the Revolution Performance techs. ■

T

he grips on a motorcycle are the most tactile connection between a rider and the bike. Sure, the seat, and pegs or floorboards are a big part of the rider triangle, but those handgrips are where the connection is really made. Choosing the right grips can not only make riding more comfortable but can improve the looks of the bike, too. Avon Grips has a whole lineup of grips that will really help your customer make that connection. These are good-looking custom grips, designed with comfort and style in mind. And, there are grip-sets available to suit most every aesthetic taste and hand size. The range includes everything from old-school rubber grips with that classic “Coke bottle” shape to grips with custom-design billet end caps and collars in chrome or anodized finishes. There are many different textures and feels offered as well. There are gel grips, air-cushion grips, Velvet Air grips, custom contours, the new Memory Foam and more. There are even grips with built-in throttle assist and undercut area for your fingers to fit into. Avon offers grips in small, medium and large size diameters for a perfect fit. The grips are available in push-pull or fly-by-wire applications, and they all install in minutes.

Memory Foam grips are a best seller in the lineup. Made with Ethylene-Vinal Acetate (EVA), the same material found on the soles of most sneakers, they’re super comfortable with a cool, non-abrasive feel. Although this is the softest, most compliant material molded by Avon, it’s also the most durable and chemical resistant. Memory Foam grips are available in those three different diameters, too, and are offered with triple-chrome plated aluminum ends and collars. They are available in several radical designs. Those Avon Air Cushion grips feature soft knurl-textured rubber with air pockets inside that dramatically reduce vibrations and hand tingle – they’re all available in several good-looking designs. And then there are the Velvet Air grips, which have air pockets under an incredibly soft, vibration-dampening surface. The Avon Gel Grips feature an ergonomic style with a soft, tacky feel, while the classic V-Cruisers are made of Kraton rubber with a leather-grain texture Open the FatBook or the OldBook and take a look at them all, and show them to riders asking about grips; there’s bound to be a pair in there that seal the deal. ■
