A Year To Celebrate by D on Em de

W

hat a great time we’ve had this year telling stories about the many angles of Drag Specialties’ 50th anniversary. We started out with a look back at how the company got started in 1968, including that now-famous phone call before they had a name. The caller asked, “Is this Drag Specialties?” Founder Tom Rudd answered, “Yes,” and the name stuck. We’ve also profiled some of Drag’s early employees, vendors, sales reps and dealers—many still active – as well as many of the custom builders, whose creations and products have filled many pages in the FatBook, OldBook, as well as Drag Specialties Magazine. In this issue we feature our final installment in the “Drag 50th anniversary” series. After looking back, in this issue we look ahead to what Drag Specialties has in store as we move forward into 2019. We offer our congratulations to everyone at Drag Specialties, then and now, for 50 great years of motorcycle business success. And while the confetti is flying, let me also congratulate one of Drag’s longest and most-trusted vendors, S&S Cycle, for their 60th anniversary this year, as well as J&M Corporation, the motorcycle audio company celebrating 40 years. Be sure to check out our report starting on page 38 about this year’s NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI. It was a high-energy event with so many great new products unveiled for 2019. And, of course, we have a customized motorcycle to show you. Have a look at the cool XL 883 that Shane Gatto and the custom team at Harley-Davidson of Utica, NY put together. Proof once more that creative people with the necessary tools and their FatBook and OldBook catalogs can build some pretty amazing machines. ■

rag Specialties has named Eric Baumgardner as its new regional sales manager covering the Southeast Region.

Eric Baumgardner

Baumgardner’s riding history began decades ago on a 1980 Harley-Davidson XLH and he has owned and ridden several Harley models since. Some of his favorites include the Buell S3T, FXRs, Touring models and his current ride, a 2014 Road King. As a lifetime member of the Harley Owners Group and having spent over 40 years working for both large and small Harley-Davidson dealerships, Baumgardner has established a practical knowledge of the industry and close relationships with riders all over the world. J&M Corporation Turns 40 CELEBRATING FOUR DECADES OF CUSTOM AUDIO

I

t’s been four decades since then-newlyweds John Lazzeroni and Melinda Carevich hopped aboard their brand new 1978 Honda Gold Wing and headed off for a honeymoon in Las Vegas.

While on that trip, the two discovered that Melinda couldn’t hear either the brand new AM/FM/CB radio just mounted on the bike or her husband — John had to turn around and yell behind him for them to hear each other. It was that trip, and a subsequent hunt for helmet speakers and microphones, that planted the seeds for what is now J&M Corporation, the longtime powersports audio manufacturer and Drag Specialties vendor that is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018. After cobbling together a selection of components from their local Radio Shack to build the first J&M helmet headsets, the two had a product that immediately caught the eyes — and ears — of the local Gold Wing community. From there on out the orders kept flowing in and during those first years in business as J&M Enterprises, friends and relatives pitched in to help assemble the headsets gathered around the kitchen table. Since those early days, the company (which changed its name to J&M Corporation in 1983) has gone on to manufacture more than 1 million headsets for motorcycle use around the world. Over the years, J&M has become a regular fixture at motorcycle rallies around the country, including all 40 of the Wing Ding rallies held by the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. In fact, John proudly boasts that he’s attended all 40 in person. J&M also began working as an OE supplier for helmet headset for American Honda, Yamaha Motor Company, Kawasaki Motors, and in 1989, Harley-Davidson. The company went on and expanded to start offering a full range of audio equipment such as speaker and amplifier kits, as well as miscellaneous audio components. With an eye towards the future, J&M is now updating and improving its lineup of Bluetooth products for wireless communications and audio in order, as John says, “to keep pace with the ever-changing demands in that area of the market.” ■

»» Drag Specialties Magazine would like to congratulate John, Melinda and the whole team at J&M Corporation for achieving this important milestone.

or the past year we’ve shined the spotlight on Drag Specialties’ first 50 years as the world’s leading motorcycle aftermarket parts distributor. Highlights have included an overview of the company’s early years, the origin of the FatBook (1996) and OldBook (2010). We then profiled some of the first vendors and dealers that have since become key players within the industry, and checked in with some of the company’s long-running sales reps. And no retrospective of Drag Specialties’ history would be complete without showcasing the various custom FatBook and show bikes that are considered landmarks within the custom-bike community today. Now it’s time to illuminate the road ahead to see what’s in store for the coming 50 years. Hold on, because it looks to be a wild – and fun – ride. Interestingly, we can look back at what was stated in Drag Specialties’ 1974 catalog about the fledging company’s future to see where it’s headed today: “We at Drag Specialties have never been willing to sacrifice quality for quantity. This will continue to be our policy in the future. It is our hope that all of our customers will appreciate this fact and at the same time realize that we are constantly striving to meet the needs of our customers.” Most recently, and since 1988, those words and philosophy have been paraphrased and echoed time and time again by Drag Specialties’ owner, Fred Fox. Quality in terms of providing customers with the best parts and sales service has been paramount at Drag Specialties. That will never change, and here’s how Drag intends to do that in the coming years:

EVO, TWIN CAM, MILWAUKEE EIGHT oremost, Drag’s future will continue many current successful programs that promise fresh, new ideas in the coming years. And, since Drag Specialties is in the business of supplying custom and replacement parts to dealers, we should start with the parts themselves. Drag will continue its successful business model of supplying parts for the myriad of Dynas, Softails, Touring models, Sportsters and other bikes out on road. Drag’s national sales manager Jim Matchette feels that the Dyna, a line recently discontinued by Harley, will continue to gain in popularity due to their affordability as used bikes. Consequently, many of Drag’s major suppliers have ramped up their custom parts inventories to address the growing popularity of pre-owned Dynas. Ditto for XL parts because pre-owned Sportsters are a popular choice for young riders looking to join the V-twin bandwagon. Custom parts for Evo-generation Harleys are now found exclusively in Drag’s OldBook, while growing demand for Twin Cam custom parts reflect a trend among FatBook shoppers looking to update their current rides. “We’re also expanding our product line to address the current-generation Milwaukee-Eight models,” assures Matchette. Many of Drag’s house brand vendors, such as Bassani, Custom Dynamics, Saddlemen, Klock Werks and Hog Tunes, among others, are working hard to offer a full line of aftermarket parts and components for the new Milwaukee-Eight models. Ditto for the Drag-branded products, both Premium and Regular levels. Moreover, look for many of those new products to find their way onto future Drag Specialties project bikes that will appear at national events and appear on and in the FatBook and OldBook.

Stay tuned for the latest range of custom bike projects featuring the latest, greatest products from the FatBook and OldBook.

Prudent dealers know that it doesn’t make financial sense to over-stock with items that might not be in huge demand. On the other hand, an experienced sales rep realizes that not having the right parts at the right time on the shelf often means that a customer will walk away, resulting in a no-sale. “That’s why,” clarifies Matchette, “we’re working to educate current and future dealers on what parts to stock for older models as well as Milwaukee-Eight models.” No doubt, Drag Specialties’ sales reps will continue to play a big role in dealer support for years to come.

“Every time we do a bike build, we want to get the latest and greatest parts on it,” says Tom Motzko, who oversees vendor development for Drag. While the OEMs continue to fuel the fire with new models that entice customers, Drag’s vendors will be there with new and exciting products to customize those bikes, and popular preowned bikes that customers continue to upgrade and customize.

DRAG SPECIALTIES DEALER TOUR Drag Specialties has the throttle pinned for 2019 and is rolling out a stronger Dealer Training Tour, new programs, new vendors and longtime favorites like those custom FatBook bikes and Dealer Ride.

“W

e’re going to intensify our Dealer Tour for 2019,” Matchette says. Like the 2018 Tour, this year’s outing includes a tractor-trailer rig stocked with project bikes boasting the latest custom parts. These bikes join vendor displays and sample products to form the centerpiece of a traveling show that’s scheduled to visit dealers across the country. As it did last year, the 2019 Tour begins in Daytona Beach, Florida, at the conclusion of Bike Week. From there the Tour heads in a clockwise direction around the country, making scheduled stops at specified locations. Each stop enables local dealerships’ staff and employees to meet one-onone with the vendors and Drag sales reps to learn more about new products and how best to market them for their area. These events are reserved exclusively for Drag dealers and their employees to interact with vendors so they can learn as much about the products as possible. Dealers can also arrange to have the bikes and displays at their dealerships the weekend following the event stop for additional promotional purposes. Dealers who took advantage of that opportunity in 2018 found that hosting the Training Tour at their dealerships proved to be valuable tools for initiating special sales promotions exclusively for their local customers.

ONLINE REVAMP

C

heck out Drag Specialties Internet presence as it will be getting a huge upgrade in the near future. An all-new Drag Specialties website is scheduled to go online soon, one that will be more user-friendly and accommodating for vendors, dealers and retail customers. Drag Specialties’ new social media director, Cory Ring, and expanded staff have worked hard during the past months to develop a website that will be informative and entertaining. The end result, of course, is for more interaction between Drag dealers and their vendors and retail customers.

20

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

And as the years roll by, the site will grow in stature, size and value for dealers everywhere. It’s a chance for everybody – suppliers, sellers and customers – to interact and connect for sharing ideas and information on how to make any and every American V-twin motorcycle more exciting and stylish.

DRAG DEALER RIDE

Additionally, the return of the annual Drag Dealer Tour and the new social media sites with interactive programs promise to expand business across the board. But at the end of each workday, everybody in the V-twin industry knows why they got into the business in the first place – motorcycles are fun! That’s where we’ll end this recap, with the fun factor. For many established Drag Specialties dealers and vendors, this can be spelled out in one simple phrase; the Drag Dealer Ride. The 2018 Dealer Ride marked the 15th consecutive year for this ride, and for 2019 the ride marks Sweet 16. This is the annual event that’s held at the conclusion of the sales year. It’s as wildly popular as it simple – get a group of enthusiasts together in a scenic spot somewhere in the USA and ride motorcycles. Done. The Dealer Ride is also a chance for everybody to mix business with pleasure. Vendors showcase their products at the “Performance Alley,” and dealers get a chance to try those products with their own bikes, reminding themselves once again why they’re in this business in the first place.

The Drag Specialties Dealer Ride is a big favorite for dealers and vendors alike. Who doesn't like riding motorcycles?

Now looking forward to the next 50, Drag Specialties is taking on the future with that same steady supply of great products to entice customers, programs to motivate dealers and help streamline business, and events that keep that joy of motorcycling at wide-open throttle. ■

DRAG SPECIALTIES 50TH

Expanding the OldBook to include Evo-generation parts, ramping up existing custom parts for the still popular Twin Cam bikes, and introducing more new and exciting parts for the Milwaukee-Eight are a strong three-pronged approach to ramp up traffic at Drag Specialties dealers across the country.

Building, customizing and riding motorcycles is the common thread that links together most everybody in the V-twin business. For 50 years, Drag Specialties has been there right alongside them distributing the broadest, most innovative and exciting aftermarket products in the V-twin aftermarket.

More than just a motorcycle ride, the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride is a chance for reps, dealers and vendors to bond over two days of camaraderie and good times.

The Drag Specialties Exclusive Dealer Training Tour brings a select group of vendors and their products directly to dealers around the country. This gives everyone involved a chance for one-on-one product education and deep insight into sales programs and company information.

The Prime Apes handlebars have aggressive styling, but they are also designed to offer all-day riding comfort for Street Glides and Road Glides. The bars are on the skinny side for ape hangers, measuring in at just 35½ inches wide. Height options include 10 inches, 13 inches and 16 inches. Like the KAGE Fighter bars, the Prime Apes are made of 1¼-inch U.S. steel. The Road Glide fitment is packaged with black control clamps and a slot for the stock pin.

A Choppers got the chance to show off some of its latest handlebars and the new Hero Kit for handlebar installation during the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI. The new parts, including KAGE Fighter T-bars, Prime Apes handlebars and the Hero Kit, are all in stock at Drag Specialties and ready to ship.

The 10-inch Prime Apes can use the stock cables, and LA Choppers has matching wiring kits available for the other heights. When in doubt, a dealer just needs to visit www.handlebarcables.com for an easy cable kit guide based on the bike model and year, plus the LA Choppers handlebars being installed.

The KAGE Fighter T-bars have a 30-inch wide stance and make an ideal traffic-conquering handlebar for Softails, Dynas, Sportsters and Road Kings. The riser and eight-bolt billet clamp hold onto 1¼-inch motocross-style bars made of high-strength steel tubing, and it is all made in the USA. The bars are constructed with a double-wall design for added strength. Inside, the bars can accommodate wiring, throttle-by-wire and heated grip components.

The new Hero Kit for handlebar installation was a big hit at NVP thanks to its price and its cleverness. The kit is meant to help with every handlebar wiring installation, and it contains a chain, wire sheathing and a clasp.

TIRES

Purpose-Built Tires

The Michelin and Harley-Davidson Partnership

Michelin collaborated with Harley-Davidson to develop the co-branded Scorcher line of tires to run as OE on a number of models. That relationship continues as the two continue to develop tires for new models from the Motor Company.

That tire range includes the Scorcher 11s, 21s, 31s and 32s, and there are 29 sizes available with tread patterns, compounding and carcass constructions all specifically engineered for the bikes they’ll go on. These co-developed tires were the first, and remain the only, co-branded product in Michelin’s entire portfolio. It’s testament to the strong relationship of these two global partners, a relationship continuing on with the development of the tires for those three new Harley-Davidsons. It’s that very relationship that helped develop the technology, features and benefits that are built into that wide Scorcher tire range. This continues Michelin’s Total Performance™ commitment of consistently offering tires that deliver high levels of performance in all segments of motorcycling. In working with Harley-Davidson on the development of the Scorchers, Michelin drew on decades of wide-ranging experience as it cross-pollinated its engineering and design technologies across segments, even entire platforms.

arley-Davidson is set to unveil its first electric motorcycle, its first adventuring-touring motorcycle and a Harley-Davidson sportbike. The OE tires for all three of these coming models will be from Michelin, which has worked closely with the Motor Company since 2007. That 11-years-and-running collaboration began when Michelin was first approached by Harley-Davidson to become an OE supplier. Out of this partnership came the co-developed and co-branded Michelin Scorcher tires, tires designed especially for Harley-Davidsons. Today those Scorchers are factory-fit on more than 40 percent of Harley-Davidson motorcycles covering 80 percent of the entire model lineup. Developed to optimize the ride, feel, and handling of a Harley, there are applications for Dynas, Softails, Sportsters, Streets and Touring models.

It’s innovative tire solutions like these that help Harley-Davidson dealers, technicians and shops deliver value and performance to their customers with Michelin. They can do this through all of those Michelin Scorcher tires that are available immediately through Drag Specialties. These are the tires that Michelin and HarleyDavidson specifically use on Harley motorcycles. ■

COMPANY PROFILE

P R O D U C T

S&S Cycle headquarters is nestled into the rolling hills of Viola, WI.

S&S Cycle Turns 60 A History of Proven Performance

I

t all started with the lure of a $1,000 prize.

A track promoter at Half Day Speedway in Chicago was offering to lay out the cash and George J. Smith had a plan to snatch it up. That plan involved a 1939 80-inch Knucklehead Big Twin that Smith had heavily modified for maximum power. Throughout the season, Smith won race after race, eventually landing the drag racing championship with an elapsed speed of 123.45 mph. Smith won, but that $1,000 proved to be elusive as the track promoter pulled the money at the last minute, denying him the prize. Smith may have lost out on a big pay day, but that effort at the drag strip established a passion for speed that would soon take him and partner Stanley Stankos to recordbreaking runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats and into V-twin industry greatness by opening and establishing S&S Cycle. For 2018, S&S Cycle celebrates 60 years of “Proven Performance,” six decades of creating and building a huge range of innovative hop-up parts, products designed to coax every ounce of horsepower and torque out of a V-twin motor. For three decades of that time, S&S has been a trusted vendor of Drag Specialties. The company launched with lightweight solid lifter pushrod kits for Knucklehead and Panhead Big Twins, and now produces everything from exhausts, oil pumps and throttle bodies to pistons, camshafts and engines, many of which you’ll find in the pages of the FatBook and OldBook.

George J. Smith (left) and Stanley Stankos launched the company in 1958. Stankos left a year later and George's wife Marge stepped in as the other 'S' in the company name.

Still on the gas (or nitro) at 60, S&S Cycle continues to keep its eyes on the checkered flag, and is still focused on developing and building V-twin performance products at its headquarters in Viola, WI and facility in nearby LaCrosse, WI. S&S was instrumental in working with Indian Motorcycle to develop its record-breaking FTR750 flat track bike. The company has been right there alongside at the top of the podium as Indian has dominated the last two seasons of American Flat Track racing thanks to Indian/Drag Specialties rider Jared Mees’ back-to-back championships. Given that race-rich history, some friendly competition had to be part of the company’s anniversary celebration, says David Zemla, S&S Cycle’s VP of marketing. “We are a company born of racing, so naturally celebrating 60 years of high performance had to involve a race, and for good measure we mixed in a bit of a party,” he says. “Working with an insanely passionate team of employees, we built a flat track next to the office, now dubbed the Speed Ranch!

S&S CYCLE

We’ve thrown high profile and fairly elaborate parties for the last few anniversaries, but for this one we decided to get back to our roots.” Indeed, those roots are racing. By the time Smith and Stankos opened S&S, Smith was already an accomplished racer and the two of them were building engines that were breaking records out at the Bonneville Salt Flats. A refined version of his 1939 80-inch Knucklehead Big Twin called “TRAMP” ran at 152.02 mph on the salt in 1954. It was that quest for speed that served as the launching point for testing and developing new products for S&S. Started in Smith’s basement in Blue Island, IL. in 1958, the company moved to Viola in 1969. After a year in business, Stankos called it quits in order to focus more time on his upholstery business. George’s wife Marge stepped in as the other ‘S’ in the company name, being her maiden name was also Smith.

Also, our oil pump and cam plate for the Milwaukee-Eight are both highly engineered parts designed to make the latest from Harley-Davidson a much better engine.” With 60 years now under its belt, the company is now eyeing the future with a number of initiatives in play and you can bet that its go-fast history will shape them all along the way. “S&S has never lost sight of its racing heritage and continues to use competition to drive product development,” Zemla says.

»» Drag Specialties Magazine would like wish the team at S&S Cycle a hefty congratulations on its outstanding milestone.

Throughout its decades in business, S&S has worked tirelessly to create and build innovative products. That range includes its first user-friendly stroker kits, which included every part necessary for a complete installation, the iconic Teardrop air cleaner cover, the Super D carburetor and compression release camshafts. Its current crop of products includes the Mini Tear Drop Stealth air cleaner kits, new products for the Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight motor and emissions-friendly exhaust systems with high-flow catalytic converters. The company even has its own in-house emissions testing laboratory. “We are particularly proud of our 50-state legal exhaust systems,” says Zemla. “Countless hours have gone into designing, testing and building high flow cats that make real power, many of which produce more power and have a smoother torque curve than empty pipes.

F

ew people embrace the end of the riding season in those parts of the country where winter weather mean helmets get tucked away, riding gear gets stashed and bikes are parked for a couple months’ long hiatus from the road. The one upside to this forced hibernation is all that downtime serves as the right time for upgrades, modifications and even repairs. After all, nothing gets an itchy throttle hand ready to twist like knowing that there’s more performance to enjoy when the roads are clear and the season is heating up.

S&S Cycle has one great reason to look forward to those long months off; its Winter Power Package offers your customers an ideal combination of performance and savings all under one part number. Designed to transform your customers’ Milwaukee-Eight or Twin Cam Harley-Davidson models, the Winter Power Package features a combination of a complete big-bore kit and a cam chest. 31, 2019. That all-in-one combo kit will save your customers $400 compared to if they were to buy the parts separately. For Harley’s latest engine platform, the Winter Power Package features S&S Cycles’ new 124-inch bolt-in bigbore kit with a 550 cam, cam plate and high-flow oil pump. It also features valve springs, lifters and pushrods. That 124-inch kit comes in a wrinkle black finish, with or without fin highlighting. It also features forged pistons and a 11.1 compression ratio. The oil pump/cam plate helps increase flow capacity on both feed and scavenge side, and the pressure relief valve is adjustable with the unit installed in the engine. The other parts are S&S tough and designed to be a serious upgrade over the OE pieces. The Twin Cam kit gets a similar combination of performance parts, including a 585 cam. Twin Cam bikes from model years 1999 to 2006 get one of S&S Cycles’ 100-inch big-bore kits, while 2007 to 2017 bikes get the 110-inch big-bore kit.

For the Twin Cams, S&S Cycle provides big-bore kits that require no modifications and feature new, low-friction ductile cast iron liners to improve performance and improve thermal conductivity. Those 585 cams are S&S Cycle’s own Easy Start models, which allow for starting any engine, regardless of displacement or compression ratio, with a stock starter. All of the kits are available with gear or chain drive cam, and are designed to make big, reliable power with equally big savings. With one of S&S Cycles’ Winter Power Packages, your customers can be sure that their bikes are ready to rip come spring, whether it’s for a purpose-built hot rod Bagger or a club-style Dyna designed to carve the canyons. ■

New and Returning Audio Products

omething old, something new. No, it isn’t a wedding, but more audio solutions from sister companies Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio. Hogtunes is celebrating the return of a popular audio product for 1994-2013 Harley touring models, while Wild Boar Audio has just launched a brand-new product for 2014 and newer Rushmore liquid cooled models. Hogtunes released rear speaker pods for King Tour Packs back in 2006. They sold well, but the tooling to make them had worn out. When the 2018 FatBook came out, it was the first time in over a decade that the rear speaker pods weren’t in the catalog. Dealers immediately started calling, wanting to know what had happened. After a lot of phone calls from dealers and retooling, Hogtunes is once again offering the rear speaker pods for King Tour Packs as well as aftermarket packs with a similar fitment. The rear speaker pods (p/n 4405-0229) are made of a PVC cabinet wrapped in leatherette, which matches the factory seat color. The cabinets hold 5¼-inch speakers, and they can fit both front and rear Hogtunes speakers of that size. Each package comes complete with the grills, mounting hardware and a complete wiring harness. The harness features a quick-release plug for bikes with detachable tour packs. A drilling template is built into each cabinet for easy installation, and riders who want some extra flair will find that Harley-Davidson accessory chrome grill rings fit perfectly with the pods. Wild Boar Audio, on the other hand, has been focused on newer models and the sound at the front of the motorcycle. The new speaker adapters allow liquid-cooled bikes to use full-size 6½-inch speakers in the lowers, while maintaining easy access to the coolant reservoir. Wild Boar Audio is offering the speaker adapters by themselves (p/n 4405-0532), which hold speakers with a maximum mounting depth of 2¼ inches. Additionally, a complete kit (p/n 4405-0533) includes everything required – a 300-Watt Wild Boar Audio amplifier, Wild Boar Audio speakers, the lower speaker adapters and all necessary wiring. Each adaptor is made from a high-quality injectionmolded plastic that has been finished with a sturdy gloss black paint, which matches the inner fairing of liquid cooled Rushmore models. ■

EXHAUST SYSTEMS

FXDR Power

Systems for Harley-Davidson’s New Sport Cruiser

Bassani also offers the Sweeper Radius System for the Harley-Davidson FXDR.

S

ince it was unveiled, Harley-Davidson’s 2109 FXDR has been turning heads. With its sport-style look and plenty of punch from 114-inches worth of Milwaukee-Eight power, the bike is a real departure for the Motor Company. More than a muscle-bound cruiser, the FXDR is aimed squarely at riders wanting an American V-twin with contemporary style and handling and lots of modern technology. An eight-valve engine, aluminum swingarm in a composite subframe and a 43mm inverted fork with clip-on handlebars makes sure FXDR owners will get plenty. Now those FXDR customers can bump up that style and performance thanks to Bassani’s new replacement exhaust system upgrades – the popular Road Rage 2-into-1s and Pro Street Turn Out twin pipe setup. The performance-enhancing attributes of a Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 are well known and there is a range of construction and finish options offered – stainless steel throughout or mild-steel in black or chrome.

In all finishes, the look is performance-purposeful, just like the FXDR itself. The reduced weight aids handling, the upswept design provides plenty of ground clearance at big lean angles and, of course, there’s that 2-into-1 power boost. Horsepower and torque, already plentiful with a Milwaukee-Eight, gets a boost on the dyno charts and out on the street. Then there are those Pro Street Turn Outs. Offered in black or chrome, these twin-pipe systems also feature stepped head pipes, 1¾ inches to 2 inches. Their slim, 2½-inch muffler bodies come with turnout ends for a hot-rod look that’s right at home on the FXDR. Tuned to increase low-end torque and produce a deep, throaty exhaust note, the pipes come with heat shields, mounting brackets and hardware. Both the Road Rage 2-into-1s and the Pro Street Turn Outs feature 18mm O2 ports for wide-band tuning options, and include 12mm adapters and plugs. ■

GLOVES

Gloves Revisited

Updated Styles for All Types of Riding

T

hrashin Supply gloves are designed by riders, for riders, with a combined 30-plus years of glove industry experience. Thrashin offers a variety of options of gloves to cater to all riding styles. Whether it is for your customers’ daily commute or their long-haul trips, Thrashin Supply has a glove for them. The Stealth and the Covert glove are both constructed with synthetic four-way stretch material for comfort and mobility, which gives a gloveless feeling. They are both made with a seamless palm, making them ideal for riders who generally prefer the feeling of their palms against the grips. After a lot of interest from female riders who needed more sizing options, Thrashin has added XS to its size range, which goes up to XXL.

Covert glove

Drag Specialties is carrying the Stealth glove in black, red and blue. The new Stealth glove options have subtle color touches on a nearly all-black chassis, as well as the addition of the middle-finger bolt graphic.

The Siege glove with elongated gauntlet cuff

For riders who prefer the bright allover colors, Drag Specialties has the original red and blue version of the Stealth in stock, too. In addition, riders can now opt for the Stealth glove with hot-rod style flames licking up from the fingers. These new graphic designs in that line are anything but understated.

in has a wide variety of colors available in the Covert, from neutral options such as black on black, OD green, gray and tan, to a brighter selection of red and yellow. The black glove is especially subtle, since even the graphics are printed in black. Thrashin’s approach to the updated Covert was to choose colors similar to what someone might choose for a pair of pants – something versatile and low-key. On the completely opposite side of the design spectrum, Thrashin’s Siege glove is a leather glove that uses goatskin for its softness, flexibility and durability. Thrashin designed the Siege glove as something to wear when the weather turned colder, but as Southern California residents, they soon learned that cold is relative. Customers in northern states began asking for something warmer, so a Siege insulated glove is now available, featuring a 3M Thinsulate lining to regulate body temperature, while still allowing the glove to breathe freely. The Siege and Siege Insulated gloves are offered with both Velcro cuff as well as an elongated gauntlet cuff. Thrashin’s entire glove line has touch screen capabilities for ease of use. ■

Performance Trio

Three Steps to Power for New Softails

The Fuelpak FP3 connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to smartphones and uses Flash technology to recalibrate critical engine parameters and mapping for intakeand-exhaust system changes and other performance upgrades.

T

he custom, performance handiwork of Terry Vance and Byron Hines has resulted in countless race wins, series championships and neck-snapping/arm-stretching street performance for decades. Those 40-plus years of experience in on-track competition and on-street action now comes neatly wrapped in a new stainless steel upsweep 2-into-1 exhaust system for the 2018 – 2019 Softails. Stainless steel is the hot ticket these days, and its right here in a power-building and free-flowing 2-into-1 system. It has a short and racy megaphone muffler that has hot-rod, race bike looks coupled with Vance & Hines power. There’s also a new style-matched and equally free-flowing performance air filter called the Cage Fighter air intake. And, to precisely dial all of this in for maximum effect on those Milwaukee-Eight Softails there’s a CAN/Bus 6-pin Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3. A 2-into-1 exhaust has been a performance favorite forever. The scavenging effect of the design is well known and so is the serious power boost these systems produce. Drawing on all those years of racing success, Vance & Hines has come up with a dandy here. This stainless 2-into-1 upsweep has been designed, engineered, prototyped and tested to make darn sure it’ll

pull the maximum amounts of horsepower and torque from a Milwaukee-Eight engine. The stainless 2-into-1 upsweep with its oversized merge collector, short megaphone-style muffler and race-inspired heat shield has the all-business look and sound riders want, all of it matched with Vance & Hines performance. Manufactured entirely from high grade 304 stainless steel, the 2-into-1 upsweep system also features a brushed “works-style” finish, further accenting the performance appearance. There are fitments for most of the other 2018 and 2019 Softails with both forward and mid-controls, and there are adaptors supplied for mounting the pipes on those mid-control bikes like the Street Bobs and Low Riders. See the FatBook for fitment details. A free-flowing performance exhaust like the stainless 2-into-1 upsweep always works best when matched with an equally free-flowing intake, and Vance & Hines has it – the VO2 Cage Fighter intake system. Designed for maximum airflow to the filter element, which itself is a washable and reusable race-inspired high-flow design, the Cage Fighter also features an oversize-inlet backing plate and a billet venturi to precisely direct the airflow. All this comes trimmed in stainless steel with a brushed finish just like the exhaust for a uniform look.

Adding an exhaust system and high flow intake always requires a re-mapping of the bike’s computerized engine management. With Vance & Hines’ CAN/Bus 6-pin version of the Fuelpak FP3, that work is easy to perform via a smartphone. The Fuelpak FP3 connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to iPhone or Android smartphones and uses Flash technology to recalibrate all critical engine parameters and mapping for intake-and-exhaust system changes and other performance upgrades. Custom programs can be downloaded from the expansive library of calibrations already developed by Vance & Hines or specific changes can be made for

custom tuning. The CAN/Bus 6-pin Fuelpak FP3 also includes an Autotune feature using all the OE factory sensors. This adds yet another layer of precision-tuning possibilities for specific requirements and conditions whether it’s tuning for unique components or different grades of fuel or altitudes. The Fuelpak FP3 is also capable of displaying plenty of Live Sensor Data, viewed right through the smartphone and displaying speed, rpm, cylinder head temperature, voltage, gear selection and lots of other vital information. ■

When it comes to the Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo, there’s no truer statement and that was the message that LeMans Corporation’s vice president of sales Jeff Derge used to kick off the event that signals the start of the coming sales and riding season. In other words, those dealers and vendors gathered for one super-charged weekend at the Monona Terrace in Madison,

For two full days, dealers pack into the Monona Terrace’s convention hall to see what is essentially the FatBook and OldBook come to life for a hands-on look at what all those vendors are bringing to the market. The Expo is the epicenter of the LeMans universe as dealers, reps, vendors and LeMans support staff gather together. In addition to all that in-person product handling, dealers had the opportunity to get detailed product education and sales training from vendors such as Custom Dynamics, Dunlop Motorcycle Tires, Legend Suspensions and SENA communications. Another big highlight of the Expo is the popular Night of the Stars. Given that NVP is the annual gathering spot for All Things LeMans Corporation, the company makes sure to honor the combined Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited sales force for their record-breaking sales successes. We’re talking about recognizing the very same Drag and Parts sales reps you work with all year for killer sales figures. When you see and hear their successful results for the year, there is no mistaking that this combined team is the most power sales force in the Powersports marketplace. On the night of the show’s first day, the dealers, vendors and sales reps all gathered at the Terrace’s rooftop deck for the annual Meet & Greet/Bike Show. This annual event gives those attending the perfect chance to reconnect, enjoy refreshments and check out an array of custom metric and V-twin machines customized, built or restored by their peers. They are also given the opportunity to vote on their favorite machines, with People’s Choice winners chosen for both V-twin and metric classes. This year’s winners include a radically hand-built custom cruiser and a flashy, tricked-out stunt bike. Todd Olson photo

WI, were getting the jumpstart on their competition by previewing the hot new products and sales programs that will be available when spring officially starts in 2019. The Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo offers dealers from around the country a hands-on first look at all the hot new parts, accessories, apparel, tools and equipment from more than 170 LeMans vendors. We’re talking everything from riding jackets, exhaust and brake supplies to audio equipment, helmets, touring luggage, and much more.

And, for five years running now, the Michelin Power Jam rocked downtown Madison’s Majestic Theater. It was here that the talented musicians among the LeMans staff, Drag and Parts rep force, and vendor lineup delivered a night of hot-and-heavy rock and roll and blues. With 2019 now clearly on the horizon, Parts Unlimited dealers and vendors can look forward to attending the spring NVP Product Expo now in its new location in Louisville, KY at the KICC Convention Center. That new venue is shaping up to be a powerhouse event with more than 300 planned displays and plenty of dealer training.

2016 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER Imagine ordering this up at a dealership! Shane Gatto and the custom team at Harley-Davidson of Utica, New York oblige customers with bikes like this all the time.

A

fast-growing and enthusiastic group of riders is taking a good, long look at café style HarleyDavidsons. Even riders seriously committed to their European or Japanese sportbikes are taking notice and Dr. Dan Bassin was no exception. An orthodontist and Ducati rider from upstate New York, Dr. Dan first spotted an interesting Sportster on display at Harley’s Custom Kings contest a few years back. After learning that the fun-looking XL had been built by Shane Gatto, he tracked down the builder at his position of service-manager/ performance-design consultant at Harley-Davidson of Utica.

54

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2018

Could Gatto duplicate something similar for him? “Not a problem at all,” came the quick reply. Gatto and his team at Harley-Davidson of Utica turn out cool Harleys all the time, everything from big-wheel baggers and supercharged Softails to bikes like this one, a three-month project that’s definitely café cool and exactly what the doctor ordered. Starting with a 2016 883-model XL in that red-denim finish, the first order of business was to make sure that the biketo-be’s future owner had enough power on hand to hold his interest. For that, Gatto went with a full Harley-Davidson Stage 4 package.

The transformation is dramatic, the work to get there all bolt-ons from the FatBook. “An average guy could build this one at home,” says Gatto. The paint, striping and details by JT’s Custom Paint Garage put this one over the top.

Once the motor work was done and the dyno showed 101 horsepower with a redline well above 7,000 rpm, it was time to break out the FatBook, a catalog that many at the dealership view as the custom-build bible. Starting up front the OEM fork tubes were replaced with gold replacements from Custom Cycle Engineering. Up top there are Roland Sands Design clip-ons with the RSD instrument-relocation pod and headlight re-locator. The cables controlling all this are Drag Specialties brand. More parts right out of the FatBook are the new Custom Dynamics LED turn signals and moving back on the bike there’s an RSD *air-filter assembly and *Tracker exhaust on the fire-breathing XL. The belt guard is also RSD, and the new tail section and seat, a café must, is from Saddlemen. As dramatic as all of this appears, Gatto says there really wasn’t a whole lot of special fabrication involved. Overall, the

Saddleman’s Seat Eliminator/Flat Tracker tail section carries airbrushed accent from the AMF days, a nice touch.

Sportster’s transformation was a nuts-and-bolts cakewalk. “What’s cool about all of that, is an average guy with some mechanical skills could build this bike, or one pretty much like it, at home,” he says. The paint job covering all this, of course, is pretty spectacular all by itself. Shane modeled it, sort of, off of Harley’s 2018 color scheme but where Harley used red, orange and purple in the accents here the orange was changed to yellow to match the rear shocks. “It made the whole thing pop,” Gatto says.

The asymmetrical layout for that accent doesn’t hurt, either, a striping design that harkens back to the vintage AMF days and really works with this café style. All this and the vivid black base was done by Jason at JT’s Custom Paint Garage in Moravia, NY, further accented with a little bit of pin striping in white and the inclusion of some small barand-shield logos back on the tail. What does Dan Bassin think about all this? “He loves it,” Gatto offers. “He’s on it all the time, saying it’s even more fun than his Ducati.” ■

Sole Story

Behind the Broken Homme Boot Brand

Longtime friends Josh Johnson (left) and Jim Leatherman launched Broken Homme in 2011 with an eye on designing, manufacturing and selling a US-made boot with timeless style. Since they hit the market, those boots have found a strong following in the V-twin community.

B

From the unseen details that make its boots sturdy and comfortable to the vision behind the brand, the founders of Broken Homme believe that their story is an important part of their products.

The James, Jaime and Davis are some of the styles that have become popular with V-twin riders. For Broken Homme founders Josh Johnson and Jim Leatherman, making the leap into the motorcycle industry was really not much of a leap at all.

BROKEN HOMME

saw the appeal. Word began to spread about the new brand, and Broken Homme soon had a new niche to fill. Johnson and Leatherman started Broken Homme in Los Angeles in 2011, though they were friends long before that. Their backgrounds in the action sports and footwear industries cemented their friendship, but it also helped spark the idea to start a footwear company together. Johnson came up with the name Broken Homme, but that proved to be the easy part. For the next year, Johnson and Leatherman did extensive research looking for the right materials, sources and factories. They searched both domestically and internationally as they learned about the possibilities and the process, finally deciding to source all of the materials and handmake all of the boots in the United States. The first boot styles debuted in late 2012. Thanks in part to their own backgrounds, Johnson and Leatherman quickly found that Broken Homme appealed to customers with an action sports mentality who wanted a footwear option that was nicer than a sneaker, but still just as comfortable. As for the motorcycle industry, customers range from Vtwin riders to café bike enthusiasts who want a timeless style. The blend of fashion and functionality has a broad appeal, though Leatherman notes that Broken Homme boots seem to be especially popular with the younger generation of riders. As Broken Homme grew and production increased, the founders heard about a factory in Los Angeles that was producing steel-toe longshoremen boots. “The factory had been around since the early sixties,” says Leatherman. “It was an older factory and had fallen on some hard times, so we decided to move some of our production out of our other spots and really give this place a shot. We could really be on top of the manufacturing element because it was such a localized thing for us.” That was nearly five years ago, and now all of Broken Homme’s production is under the roof of that old factory. Keeping production close to home is important for Johnson and Leatherman, who take quality very seriously.

Jamie boot

“We’re using (high quality) leathers and we pay attention to all the little details in our manufacturing,” says Leatherman. “If you’re looking at a boot from the outside, it’s hard to discern one boot from another. A lot of the difference goes to internal construction.” Some of those hard-to-see features include things like Goodyear welt construction. Not only does that ensure a watertight seal, but it also means the boot can easily be re-soled to extend its life. Comfort comes from touches like the Vibram soles and cork foot beds that mold to the wearer’s foot over time for premium comfort. Even the collar padding at the top of the James boot was taken into careful consideration – it is made of organic, non-toxic materials. Details like that are one of the reasons that Johnson and Leatherman are so eager to tell the Broken Homme story. “There are a few elements in the boot that you can’t see, and you have to educate people about it,” Leatherman says. ■

LEVERS

Adjustable Leverage

Get the Right Grip with PSR Levers The patent-pending adjustable levers have an easy-click dial that adjusts the distance between the lever and the bar, with six adjustment options so a rider gets exactly the right setup. The outward adjustment is the most dramatic, making the Anthem and Journey especially good choices for riders with big hands or long fingers. Each lever is CNC machined from a highquality aluminum, making them a durable but lightweight OEM replacement. The Anthem levers are available in chrome, black and contrast black finishes. The graceful lines of the Journey levers are finished in chrome or black.

Journey adjustable levers

Dealers can order lever sets, which include a pair of levers, or they can order single replacement levers. The Anthem and Journey levers are now available for most Harley-Davidson applications, with fitments from 1999 to current. In fact, PSR’s presence in the FatBook has increased dramatically, with nearly twice as many adjustable lever applications than there were last year. PSR was at the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI, as always, and dealers and reps alike gave positive feedback for the adjustable levers, praising not just the adjustability, but also the design and quality. In addition to the Harley options, PSR also got to show off the new Indian and Victory applications for the Anthem and Journey levers. The research and design for every PSR product happens at the company’s headquarters in Los Angeles. There is a lot of demand for products made in the USA, so PSR has listened to the requests and started producing more products in-house.

F

rom a lightweight performance part for roadracing to something rugged for an off-road adventure, PSR designs everything with fit, finish and function in mind. Parts for Harley-Davidson and other V-twin applications are designed and produced with the same attention to detail, including adjustable levers. The team at PSR is made up of avid riders, so each detail of a PSR product is looked at from a rider’s point of view. The Anthem and Journey adjustable levers are designed to increase comfort, to reduce hand fatigue and, of course, to look good.

Performance Rotors and Brake Pads

Drag Specialties now carries Harley-Davidson fitments for Galfer’s Wave rotors, in both solid-mount and floating designs.

G

alfer Brakes might not immediately pop to mind when the subject turns to performance upgrades for Harley-Davidsons and Indians, but that’s going to change.

Galfer now has Wave® brake rotors fitments – both solidmount and floating – and HH sintered ceramic brake pads for Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles. The strong, fade-free performance of the Spanish company’s pads and rotors has been internationally known for decades by streetbike riders, as well as top-level track and off-road racers. Galfer invented its Wave brake-rotor design in the early-1990s and it quickly became apparent that the new design not only solved the mud-and-water problem trials riders were having with their brakes, the Wave design had a much broader application. Providing stronger, surer braking and a cleaner, coolerrunning braking system overall it didn’t take long to adapt the Wave rotors throughout the Galfer brake rotor lineup. Applications grew to include streetbikes, race bikes and off-road machines. By combining the premium materials already used in the manufacture of the existing Galfer rotors into the Wave design, a new generation of brake-rotor technology and performance was born. All this is available for HarleyDavidsons throughout the model lineup and for the Indian Chiefs, Roadmasters and Springfields.

BRAKE PRODUCTS

Riding the Wave

Designed for performance, the Galfer Waves are all manufactured from 420 high carbon and proprietary virgin stainless steel. They’re laser-cut and double-disc ground for true parallel surfaces. The rotors are then heattreated and stress analyzed. For the floating designs there are the options of 7075 T6 aluminum or AISI 420 stainless steel for the center carrier hubs. Seamlessly replacing the stock rotors, the benefits of all this include optimum pad-to-rotor contact for maximum stopping force, and increased lever feel and modulation for predictable, consistent braking. By allowing air to pass over every point of the brake pad surface, the rotors operate at a cooler temperature. And, to top things off, they look great. Galfer’s HH sintered ceramic pads are the recommended accompaniment to all this, and help complete the upgrade. Blended for aggressive sport and street riding, the HH Sintered Ceramic pads feature a ceramic-coated backing plate to assist with temperature management and dissipate heat. The advanced HH friction-rated compound withstands higher temperatures than regular semi-metallic brake pads. ■

PISTONS

Piston Production

More Control Means More Diversity and Quality The alloy is ideal for air-cooled engines and streetbikes using stock or mild compression ratios to 10.5:1 with pump fuel. The high silicon content allows the pistons to resist skirt wear, and the tight piston-to-cylinder clearances are used to achieve a better ring seal and a quieter engine. On the forging side of production, KB Pistons makes 4032 alloy pistons. The 11 percent silicon alloy is formed in a forging press and then fully machined. By combining those two processes, the piston gains the ability to flex under detonation or pre-ignition, giving the best resistance to cracking.

The Super Duty series of forged performance pistons from KB Pistons features the company’s Line2Line skirt coating which offers lower friction and improved efficiency.

T

he range of KB Motorcycle Pistons applications spans nearly 80 years, with pistons available for Knuckleheads, Panheads and Shovelheads going all the way back to 1941. That kind of diversity is possible thanks to the company’s complete control over the manufacturing process. UEM, the producer of KB Pistons, manufactures both cast hypereutectic and forged pistons in its own facility, which includes a casting plant and a forging press. By having every step of the process under its control, KB Pistons is able to keep an eye on everything to ensure top quality and ISO 9000 compliance. The cast pistons are made from a hypereutectic alloy. The 16 percent high-silicon content material of those pistons has very high thermal barrier properties along with a low thermal expansion rate.

The 4032 alloy has a low expansion rate, but it is still higher than that of the hypereutectic alloy, so it requires about a 0.001-inch wider piston-to-wall clearance. Forged pistons are ideal for street or even race bikes that have power boosters, such as NOS (nitrous oxide systems).

Both the cast and forged varieties from KB Pistons are available with the company’s proprietary anti-friction skirt coating. They are noted in the applications list with a “C” in the piston model name. The Super Duty series of forged performance pistons for Harley-Davidson Twin Cam applications includes Line2Line skirt coating. KB Pistons calls the process, Adaptive Skirt Technology, and it utilizes the Line2Line abradable coating. It is applied to a thickness of the piston-to-wall clearance, which is roughly 0.003-inch. The coating abrades on startup, providing the perfect fit for each cylinder. Adaptive Skirt Technology eliminates piston rock for excellent ring seal and there will be no piston slap noise. Improved efficiency, lower friction and protection against scuffs and excess wear are other benefits of Adaptive Skirt Technology. Company founder Rick Shaw and his staff listen to their customers in order to produce electrical components that better fit the needs and preferences of riders. When customers began requesting V-twin rectifierregulators that were made in the USA, the team at Rick’s listened. In addition to the Harley rectifier-regulators, Rick’s Motorsport Electrics also produces American-made Victory and Indian regulators. YouTube channel. Over 30 videos there provide insightful technical assistance for various electrical components. There are also videos that give more insight into the people and products behind the family-owned company. Back in the late 1970s, Shaw owned a small motorcycle salvage and repair business. He noticed that the motorcycle industry had a need for aftermarket charging and starting system replacement parts, so he decided he would fill that niche with his own business. Now, more than 40 years later, Rick’s Motorsport Electrics has a full parts line of motorsport charging and starting systems as well as electrical ignition components. The applications range across the powersports industry. All along, the company’s goal has been to provide customers with a high-quality, affordable aftermarket alternative combined with quick, friendly and dependable service. What started as just a 1/8-page section in the Parts Unlimited Street Catalog has blossomed into more than 1,300 SKUs across the range of Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties catalogs. ■

Then there are those shocks. The RWD RS-1 PiggyBack coil-over performance shocks are the results of a collaboration between two legends in the off-road racing world, Russ Wernimont and Walker Evans. The two have come together to design and manufacture the new RWD RS-1 Shocks right here in the USA. With decades of racing technology between these two, these are performance shocks that deliver on that performance heritage. Features include remote piggyback reservoirs, custom-wound Eibach springs, 5/8-inch stainlesssteel shafts and internal-bypass shock-valving technology along with damping and pre-load adjustability.

t Ken’s Factory, each part is designed with the mantra “Details Create Style.” Those details also create a traffic jam at NVP shows, where Drag reps often stop to stare at the finely detailed Vanquish rocker boxes for Milwaukee-Eight models. The Vanquish rocker box cover is the most expensive item in production at Ken’s Factory, and the team there is quick to note that your customers will get what they pay for. The suggested retail prices of the covers range from $1,230 to $1,600.95. The team at Ken’s Factory believes that if your customers are going to buy and build premium motorcycles, then they should be customized with premium parts. The high quality machining and attention to details in the Vanquish rocker box covers create a high-quality piece worthy of a high-quality motorcycle. The Vanquish rocker cover box is manufactured from billet aluminum, and it is available in three finishes – polished (p/n 0940-1692), chrome (p/n 0940-1691) or a black anodized machine-cut finish (p/n 0940-1721). Always Ready

Safe Year-Round Maintenance Charging The objective was achieved and since introduction of the first OptiMate battery charger in 1994, many millions of batteries have kept on performing, some for more than 10 years.

OptiMate’s unique 365 maintenance program means that your customers can keep their batteries in tiptop, ready-to-fire shape throughout the year, even if that battery is being charged year-round.

“Y

The OptiMate 365 maintenance program is safe and designed for continuous battery maintenance. TecMate recommends hooking up an OptiMate battery charger whenever your customers store their motorcycles, be it for days, weeks or even months, especially in cold temperatures.

es” is the answer to the question often asked by riders and dealers alike: Can I leave an OptiMate battery charger hooked up to my battery, even for months at a time?

OptiMate’s unique 365 maintenance program was scientifically developed in 1994, to meet an objective set by Honda Motor Corporation. They had demanded a maintenance charger that could keep a sealed AGM battery fully charged and ready, but without the loss of even a drop of electrolyte.

During every hour of 365 maintenance, the OptiMate checks the battery and delivers an accurate 13.6V float charge for up to 30 minutes, then it stops charging for the remaining 30 minutes, allowing that battery to settle and cool. This automatic hourly cycle guarantees the battery is always fully charged and ready to deliver when riding time comes along again. With OptiMate taking care of their batteries, your customers will smile every time they press the starter button and hear that engine spring to life. ■

Working with the Milwaukee-Eight

E

very Harley-Davidson engine from the Flatheads and on to the Knuckles, Pans, Shovels and beyond has required technicians to add some new tools and equipment to the toolkit. The newest Harley design, the Milwaukee-Eight, is no exception. Proper service on a Milwaukee-Eight demands the proper tools for the job and JIMS has them. A longtime source for the specialized equipment a Harley tech needs, JIMS has a dedicated Milwaukee-Eight lineup that includes what’s required for routine in-frame service and hot-rod work. The company also has the tools and equipment for when things get serious and the engine comes out of the frame. There’s a lot to list and your Drag rep and the Tire & Service catalog can show you it all. For routine service and everyday hot-rod work like cam swaps, there are things like the JIMS Mighty Bite to lock a Milwaukee-Eight’s crankshaft from turning, a specialized Alternator Rotor Remover, Milwaukee-Eight Camshaft Bearing Removal/Installation Tools, and Cylinder Hold-Down Nuts to name a few.

heck, double-check and make sure customers know what you’ve found. Careful technicians follow these steps religiously saving lots of future headaches.

What we’re talking about are the procedures savvy shops take before, during and after a customer asks for some hot-rod modifications for his Harley-Davidson. Of paramount importance here is documentation of the crankshaft runout before any work begins. Feuling Parts has the precision equipment needed for this measurement.

Crankshaft Runout and Gear-Drive Backlash Measuring Tool

Crankshaft runout can be an issue with Evos, TwinCams and the Milwaukee-Eight. None of these engines are immune to the concern and the factory’s allowable tolerance is pretty broad, leaning towards the high-end of what’s acceptable. And all that might be fine for an engine that remains OE stock and is ridden with a light touch. Do a cam swap, go big-bore or high-compression and things can change fast. It’s a given that anyone requesting more power is going to use it. A hot-rodded bike will be hammered, guaranteed, with predictable results to crankshaft runout. If that dimension was on the high-end of acceptable before modifications it’s best that all involved know it, and what it can mean. Enter the need for Feuling’s Crankshaft Runout and Gear-Drive Backlash Measuring Tools. Two fixtures are offered, one for mounting on Evos and Twin-Cams, another for the Milwaukee-Eight. For a retail price of $112.95, your techs can add one to their toolboxes. Careful techs should also consider Feuling’s Lifter-Bore Measuring Kit for their preventative arsenal. A set of precision-ground “Go/No-Go” steel balls accurately measure lifter-bore diameter and roundness, another critical dimension to note. Optimal lifter performance calls for a pretty close fit, clearance of 0.001-inch to 0.0015-inch. Here again it’s advisable that both tech and customer know what they’re working with. ■

A Seat Built for Fun!

O

ne of the best things about a Bagger is its versatility – it can be a cross-country workhorse, a unique custom and a bike that can shred, all at the same time. LePera Motorcycle Seats designed the KickFlip seat for Bagger riders who want all of those advantages.

The KickFlip

The KickFlip fits 2008-2019 Harley-Davidson Baggers, and each one is handcrafted in the USA. Like the Bagger, the KickFlip has a lot of versatility, offering comfort, a style upgrade and unique capabilities. From the styling to the materials, the KickFlip is made with excitement in mind. The maximized back support and ample seating area offer plenty of options for riding – or showing off – at a moment’s notice. The KickFlip comes in four options for the black finish: Basket Weave, Diamond, Pleated and Gripp Tape in Diamond and Pleated styles. That last option is great for riders who need extra traction when the occasion calls for it.

The extended back support and ample 12½-inch wide seating offer plenty of space for an easy, comfortable ride when a rider is more interested in getting somewhere than letting it rip. LePera’s Marathon Foam provides maximum stability and comfort for the KickFlip. Underneath the Marathon Foam is LePera’s handcrafted steel seat base, a tradition that dates back to LePera’s founding in 1972. The powder coated steel base is carpeted on the bottom to provide a friction-free surface between the seat and the fender. ■

End the Guesswork

I

nstalling a performance clutch in a HarleyDavidson or servicing one already there can be a head-scratcher. Performance clutches for Harleys are pretty common, but how they’re manufactured, assembled and installed is a different story. The BDL Competitor Clutch and drop-in BDL Clutch Kits take all the guesswork away. With a Competitor Clutch or a BDL Clutch Kit, installation and service is easy. It starts with the BDL clutch hub and all the clutch plates, steels and frictions. In place of a multi-piece hub, BDL uses a lighter, stronger one-piece billet aluminum clutch hub. Not only does the design cause less stress on bearings and other components, its rugged construction ensures it stays solid. As for the clutch plates, BDL keeps things uniform and simple there. Installation never requires counting and measuring the thickness of each individual plate to determine what’s needed. Again, no guesswork necessary. BDL steel plates are also thicker to prevent warping, which can cause slipping and binding.

BDL’s Clutch Kits and Competitor Clutches take all the guesswork out of installing a performance clutch in a Harley-Davidson.

BDL has spring-pressure down to a science, too. Shoulder bolts of a pre-determined length are used in the coilspring applications so there’s no guesswork needed, just tighten to 12 -14 ft./lbs. and the job is done. Diaphragm setups are equally foolproof. Specified-strength diaphragm springs are supplied and BDL also uses a patented Ball Bearing Pressure Plate to create added force on the clutch pack. A BDL diaphragm spring is designed to not over-flex, either, a condition directly related to clutch slip. Stiffer springs and heavier, harder carbide ball bearings are available for big-inch applications when needed. ■
