I
’ve had the good fortune to know Fred Fox for about forty years and along the way have watched him develop relationships with many accessory manufacturers in the motorcycle business. Those that have lasted the longest have been where both parties mutually benefitted from working together. This year, Drag Specialties celebrates 50 years in business. Fred didn’t start that company, but in 1988 it was down on one knee financially and he saw not only the opportunity to step in and save what was there, but he also envisioned what it could become. Drag has always had its name on a lot of products, from its original Maltese Cross taillight to its line of Drag Specialties seats that it still sells today. But Drag could do more than that, and did. Along the way, many makers of motorcycle accessories saw the opportunity to hook up with Drag Specialties for distribution to dealers. This allowed those
many builders and product designers more time to focus on what they did best – develop great products. In this issue we feature a look back at just some of those companies and they tell how the relationship with Fred and the team at Drag Specialties has helped them build successful brands and businesses. I hope you enjoy the personal accounts from the people at Arlen Ness, Barnett, Custom Cycle Engineering, Colony Machine, Eastern, JIMS, LePera, Mustang, Paughco, Performance Machine, Pingel and Sumax. We congratulate Fred Fox, the team at Drag Specialties and the many motorcycle product companies who have worked together all these years to make such a great American business story. ■

“I’m excited to welcome Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited, one of the most dominant companies in the motorcycle industry, to my program,” Mees wrote in a post on his Jared Mees Racing Facebook page. “It was great spending the weekend with a lot of the top people at the company. Thanks for the support; look forward to reppin’ your brands this season.” The five-time Grand National Champion and factory Indian rider put the storied brand at the top of the podium in 2017 after a more than 60-year absence from professional flat track racing. He was named the 2017 Rider of the Year, and was the single season grand slam winner for the year. “We are so excited. Jared is true champion and a perfect fit to our program and we are honored to have him be part of the Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties family especially now that Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are a official sponsor of the American Flat Track series,” said Hylton Beattie Global Motorsports Director of Parts Unlimited. Mees and his Indian Wrecking Crew teammates dominated the podium in 2017. At the season finale in Perris, CA, Bryan Smith took the runner-up spot and Brad Baker landed third. “American Flat Track is the world’s premier dirt track motorcycle racing series, and one of the longest running championships in the history of motorsports, so it’s very fitting for us to be involved in this series,” Beattie said. ■

ith the move on to deliver 100 new motorcycles by 2027, Harley-Davidson has introduced two new Sportster models in the company’s popular XL lineup.
The Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special each feature some solid throwback styling cues such as mini ape-hanger handlebars and fuel tank color schemes that scream with 1970s-style colors, stripes and graphics. Both bikes are built around a 1202cc Evolution V-twin engine. The Iron 1200 features a classic 3.3-gallon Sportster fuel tank, while the Forty-Eight comes with a tidy little 2.2-gallon peanut tank.

WHERE OLD SCHOOL NEVER WENT OUT OF STYLE
“Since its inception, the Sportster has offered the perfect combination of size, power and character that makes it appealing to so many different riders,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson VP of styling & design. “A Sportster is a relatively easy bike to strip down and reinvent. What we’ve done to create the new Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special is what Sportster owners have been doing with their own bikes for generations.” ■

In a nod to the everyday rider nature of the sport, and to keep things interesting, the series will determine the champion by taking the cumulative score from nine of the 11 rounds. That means, if a rider misses a round, crashes or breaks something, they’ve still got a shot at winning the SHNC title. The Super Hooligan class rules are simple and designed to keep costs down and fabrication to a minimum – 750cc and up streetbikes with flat track race tires. See www.rolandsands.com for full rules and details. Locations in 2018 include legendary tracks like the Buffalo Chip TT, Sacramento Mile short rack and Costa Mesa Speedway. Along with those legendary circuits, there are new venues paired with a host of entertainment options at the X Games in Minneapolis, the Pier 32 asphalt oval Hooligan Gymkhana in San Francisco and a Fire Road TT at China Peak, in Lakeshore, CA. Other popular venues will include the short track at the Hippy Killer Hoedown in Perris, CA and Dirt Quake in Castle Rock, WA. Things wrap up with the final championship round at Moto Beach Classic in Huntington Beach, CA. As the organizers put it, “We suppose you could call it a motorcycle circus, but we like to think of it as a party where a race broke out.” ■

POWER AND PERFORMANCE EXHAUST UPGRADES FOR THE 2018 SOFTAILS
LIFETIME WARRANTY
The El Diablo 2-into-1
H
arley-Davidson’s introduction of the all-new Softail lineup created quite a stir among the faithful. The bikes, powered by the MilwaukeeEight engine used in the Bagger lineup last year, have more torque and much higher performance thresholds than previous Softails. Now, Cobra has just introduced its line of exhausts, (slipons and full systems), as well as air intakes, and fuel tuners to allow riders to coax even more power from that latest generation motor. Cobra has also released a couple of nifty accessories for those Softails. In the previous issue of Drag Specialties Magazine (2018 #1), Cobra talked about its slip-ons. The initial offerings were the popular 3-inch RPT and the 3-inch Neighbor Haters that fit the Softail Deluxe, Heritage Classic, Slim and Street Bob. Both slip-on models are available in chrome and black. The RPT arrives with the standard 2-inch core, a stainlesssteel screen covered in a bonded E-glass tube. The NH Series uses a louvered core while the body has a belled steel end to finish off the domed body just like the popular 4-inch Neighbor Hater for Bagger models.
Now the focus switches to three new full systems, the Speedster RPT system, the Speedster 909 system and a hot, out-of-the-oven, El Diablo 2-into-1. The Speedster Short exhaust with Race Pro Tips (RPT) makes use of all of the high-tech features of Cobra’s regular 2½-inch Speedster systems. It uses the PowerPort for increased power and uses 1¾-inch constant velocity cores for exceptional sound and performance. The RPT designation comes from adapting the design from Cobra’s larger Race Pro 4-inch muffler into this full system. The 2½-inch heat shields expand to 2¾-inches at the end. The tips mimic the Race Pro machined design, and are held in place with 12-point bolts. On the black version, the tip is clear coated, machined aluminum, while the chrome version sports a black tip. The 909 Speedsters have a unique blend of performance, sound, style and price. First like all the Cobra Speedsters, these feature the PowerPort cross over, which delivers a healthy dose of power. That’s a critical feature when using such a short system.

Speedster Short exhaust with Race Pro Tips
Speedster 909
Then, Cobra expanded the end of the muffler and rolled the tips to give it a brawny look that is matched by the sound. These use the same internal construction as the short RPT system producing the same premium sound. And, you just can’t beat the MSRP – $399.95 for the full system, with cross over and lifetime warranty.
Finally Cobra also just introduced El Diablo slip-on mufflers for the Fat Bob. Available in black with a black tip, the twin megaphone-shaped mufflers bolt to the stock head pipes and the also eliminate the obtrusive stock black covers. The twin machined aluminum tips are powder coated black, and each is etched with the Cobra logo.
Perhaps it’s the El Diablo 2-into-one that is most exciting. For the Softail the headpipes join a collector by the transmission before joining the megaphone muffler body. The junction heat shield cleans up the collector area in a simple, stylish manner.
These products are available now. And the exhausts, like all Cobra fitments for Harley-Davidson motorcycles feature Cobra’s limited Lifetime Warranty.
The 4-inch machined aluminum tip is powder coated black and etched with the Cobra logo. The tip’s reverse cone shape tastefully compliments the upswept muffler. It’s available in chrome with black tip or black with black tip.
“This gives us a great portfolio of products the 2018 Softails,” says Tim McCool, Cobra Engineering president. “Slip-on mufflers, full-systems, functional accessories, air intakes and fuel tuners make for quite an offering for Softail riders. And we are far from finished.” ■
»» Talk with your Drag rep for details and check out www.cobrausa.com.
Highway Style Cobra is also introducing a freeway bar in chrome or black that is a perfect complement to the cool, detachable back rests the company featured in Drag Specialties Magazine No. 1.
COBRA
The 1¼-inch bar is narrower at the top than a traditional freeway bar, and it has tighter bends that gives it an aggressive V-shape as it tapers toward the bottom. Overall the bar’s design is more in line with the lines of the bike, presenting a sharper, more focused, appearance.
Cobra’s highway bars cut a sleek profile.

hilly weather and rough travel conditions couldn’t stop dealers and their staff from making the second annual 2018 Drag Specialties Indianapolis NVP Product Expo a rousing success. Apparently, the promise of seeing the hottest new products from more than 200 of the industry’s leading brands proved to be a major attraction. From the moment the show opened inside the Indiana Convention Center, the floor space – boasting a 50 percent larger footprint over the 2017 Expo – was packed with dealers and sales reps eager to seek out the products that will have cash registers ringing this sales season.

“This was a great event. The quality and number of vendors and dealers was impressive,” said Mike Collins, LeMans Corporation president and CEO. “Our reps were very excited about our new products and programs. It’s the first step to a successful year for us, our dealers and hopefully for the entire industry.” The event kicked off with the Drag Specialties sales force attending two days of intense sales training from some of the top vendors in that FatBook and OldBook. On the day of the show, there were standing-room only product-training seminars from vendors such as Biltwell, Custom Dynamics, Dunlop, Klock Werks, Legend Suspensions, Michelin, and S&S Cycle.

FEB 10-11 / SHOW TIME: CHARGING INTO 2018

As soon as the seminars concluded, it was on. Dealers packed into a convention hall loaded down with new hard parts, accessories, riding apparel and gear, tools, accessories, cleaning supplies, replacement parts – you name it. There were show specials to be had, and savvy dealers jumped at the opportunity, knowing it’s events like the NVP that give them a leg up on their competition. As it is with all the NVP Product Expos, it’s not only about business; there’s also room for good times and hanging loose. Dealers, reps and vendors gathered on Saturday night at the nearby Crane Bay event center for a Meet & Greet/Bike Show. There they enjoyed food, drinks, a lineup of dealer and vendor owned machines, and the chance to mingle and reconnect.
With the spring event now in the history books, dealers can set their sights on that other show designed to help supercharge their selling power – the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI. Talk with your Drag rep for details on how to attend the show on August 25 and 26. “There was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm from vendors, reps and dealers from the minute the show opened,” said Jeff Derge, LeMans Corporation’s vice president of sales. “The Meet & Greet at Crane Bay showcased a great bike show, along with great food and refreshments. Dealers renewed many old friendships and voted for their favorite bikes in the show. It was a very positive way to kick-start the 2018 season.”

ance & Hines’ lineup of performance products is popular with many customers. The Big Radius 2-into-2 pipes, the Shortshots Staggered, the Eliminator 300 Slip-ons and the VO2 Rogue Air Intakes are all asked-for favorites. These are the pipes, mufflers and intake systems riders want, and that includes riders with the newest MilwaukeeEight powered Harley-Davidsons. Vance & Hines now has applications for those newer Harleys, including that big Softail range. Big, bold and sweeping, those Vance & Hines Big Radius exhausts have all the right curves in all the right places. They’re now available for Milwaukee-Eight powered Softails with the standard rear tire, bikes like the Street Bob, Lowrider, Fat Bob, Slim, Deluxe and Heritage Classic models. There are also Big Radius pipes to go along with the recently released Fat Boy and Breakout models. The pipes are available in Chrome or a tough-look Matte Black finish. They come wrapped in precision-sculpted and full-coverage heat shields and are finished off with scallop-cuts ends. It’s pure custom with an unmistakable custom sound to match.
There are also optional Quiet Baffles available should a rider choose to tone things down a touch without losing any of the radical-look impact. Big Radius 2-into-2s have been a custom favorite for years and all that style, sweep, sound and radical vibe has now transferred to those 2018 Softail applications. The Shortshots Staggered, a set of 2-into-2 muffled pipes with a no-nonsense drag pipe look, is another timeless Vance & Hines classic. Instantly transforming any Harley into a ready-to-go custom, they do it in a mean, all-business style. They come in Chrome and Matte Black finishes and there are two levels of Quiet Baffles as options. The applications now cover the 2018 Fat Boy and Breakout models to go along with the previously released standard-tire fitments. And all the Shortshots Staggered features are here, the aggressive hot-rod look and sound, and the sleek one-piece/full-coverage heat shields that have made these pipes the favorites they are. Let those Milwaukee-Eight riders know that the Eliminator 300 slip-ons are also available to them. Custom slip-on mufflers are quite often the first modification a rider makes to a new bike. The Eliminator 300 slip-ons feature fine-tuned and glasswrapped acoustic baffles. They’re available in standard Chrome, a new Wrinkle-Black finish and a specially formulated Satin Chrome that’s a perfect match to the factory heat shields and accent points of the new Fat Boy.
This is a filtration system that’s able to produce a strong increase in power from the high-flow/multi-valve Milwaukee-Eight cylinder heads. Everything needed for the installation is included – the filter, the cover, backing plate, internal venturi, and an integral breather assembly.
Along with a custom exhaust, new bike owners often upgrade their air intake systems. For this, Vance & Hines has the VO2 Rogue air intake. An immediate transformation to the look and feel of an engine, the new MilwaukeeEight applications fit both Softail and Touring models and they’re available with Chrome or Wrinkle Black finishes for the covers.
And last but not least, with all these new exhaust and intake mods the one piece that ties them all together to get the most performance and most responsive feel out of that Milwaukee-Eight powered bike is the Fuelpak FP3. Maps are now available for all the new Milwaukee-Eight exhausts talked about here. Just plug in the FP3 tuner and download the app to an Apple or Android phone and that bike can be tuned and ready to go in minutes. ■

PUTTING A LIGHT TOUCH TO A CUSTOM INDIAN
T
he Indian Scout Sixty has become a pretty popular machine. And, why not? With prices starting at just under nine-grand, this mid-sized cruiser has found a home not only with traditional V-twin enthusiasts, but with riders coming from import middleweights and sportbikes, riders now looking for something different. “And, I wanted to do something a little different with a Scout Sixty, too,” says builder Carl Brouhard, the guy who put this one together. And little is the operative word here. Carl went at this Indian with a light, but well-thought-out touch. The result is a knockout Scout. Built to not only catch the eye of riders walking into a dealership, Brouhard says he also wanted to make this bike seem realistic to them – something decidedly custom, but also approachable and affordable. “It’s too easy,” he says, “to just go crazy with everything that’s available in the aftermarket, adding a bunch of stuff simply because you can.”

When a build goes over the top like that, he feels, potential customers can be overwhelmed. The bike might be cool, but it can also be too much. While some will relate, many won’t because they might not have the skill or the funds to pay for everything. Hence the clean, simple, minimalist approach here. “I wanted everyone to see this as a bike they could make themselves, see firsthand just how much impact a few simple changes could have,” Brouhard says. About a year ago, Brouhard says, he got serious about putting a Scout Sixty together, thinking about the bike, planning his moves and beginning to develop parts he might include. The whole Carl Brouhard Bomber line of bolt-on accessories got its start here, and those brass-accented parts have been included throughout. They’re on the fork-slider covers, on

Brouhard, who got his start doing custom paintwork and design for Arlen Ness, continued his Bomber accents with the brass-button details in his paint job. It’s on the side-panels of the gas tank, on the fenders, around the headlight rim, on the bucket and more. The bike’s base color, by the way, is Blood Orange, a limited-addition House Of Kolor blend. Carl Brouhard’s less-is-more take on this littlest Indian is the kind of attainable inspiration those riders need. ■

distributing dynamo, Drag Specialties is well known for its shipping prowess and qualified sales force, but it's the company’s huge and impressive roster of vendors that helped cement its position as the powerhouse V-twin aftermarket parts distributor. Over the past five decades that lineup of small and big manufacturers has grown to include some of the best and most innovative companies in the business. Included in that list are vendors that have been along for the ride since Drag founder Tom Rudd added them to his growing

catalog. Others, still, joined on after Fred Fox bought the company in the late 1980s. Talk with those vendors and the feeling is almost universal, working with Drag Specialties is like working with family. These are relationships built on a combination of business, friendships and a love of motorcycling. While the business changes, trends come and go, and products evolve, the relationships between Drag Specialties and these vendors has withstood the test of time.
LEPERA – PART OF THE FAMILY
L
ePera Enterprises and Drag Specialties got together to sell quality seats in the 1980s, recalls Christine LePera, daughter of the late Bob LePera. It’s been a rewarding experience for both ever since, helping each partner to grow throughout the years. “We like working with good, solid companies, and working with Drag has definitely helped grow our brand,” LePera says. “They’re always willing to take on new products. They’re part of our business family.” LePera says there’s another aspect to “family” where Drag Specialties comes in. “You work with people over the years
LePera’s late founder, Bob LePera forged a relationship with Drag Specialties that’s been running strong for more than three decades.
and you have a friendship, but you never know how deep the friendship goes,” she says. “It’s easy to be there when times are good, but it really speaks volumes when they reach out to you when you’re not doing well. Tom Motzko was a good friend to my dad, and when Dad got sick Tom was one of the first to reach out to him. That meant so much to my dad.” The association between LePera Enterprises and Drag Specialties remains deep to this day. “Besides the business aspect of it, it’s been a great relationship friendshipwise,” she says. “All of the people who work at Drag are top-of-the-line people.”
MUSTANG SEATS – ALWAYS ALONG FOR THE RIDE
M
ustang Seats and Drag Specialties go back to just a few years after Mustang was founded in 1980. The ongoing distributor relationship with Drag has been the longest continuous association in Mustang’s history, says Al Simmons, Mustang’s founder. ”Mustang has always been grateful to Drag Specialties for promoting our brand for over three and a half decades,” he adds.

The relationship wasn’t all business during those years, either, says Marilyn Simmons, recently retired director of business development. “For years we all looked forward to Fred Fox’s annual ‘state of the industry’ address at the NVP shows in Wisconsin,” she says. “We consider him the Warren Buffet of the powersports industry.”

BARNETT TOOL AND ENGINEERING – DECADES OF TRUST arnett Tool and Engineering celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, and Drag Specialties its 50th. The two companies got together early in Drag’s history, recalls Barnett’s Mike Taylor, who adds, “It’s been nothing but a good relationship ever since.” Taylor, who’s been with Barnett for 50 years, recalls the early days when Drag Specialties was just starting up, and what happened to cement the eventual working relationship between the two companies. “When Fred Fox bought the company,” Taylor says, “they owed us some money. Fred took the time to come by the shop, sit down, and tell us they wanted to keep doing business. He said it’d take some time to pay off that old debt but they’d honor it and pay it off. During those times we had other companies go belly-up and we got stuck, but Fred did

the right thing, and that says a lot about the success he’s had with the company.” Its association with Drag Specialties helped introduce Barnett’s products to dealers and customers in ways the company could never have accomplished on its own. “The exposure our products have gotten from Drag and their various road shows and dealer reps has helped us a great deal,” he says. Taylor also appreciates that the people who run Drag Specialties are motorcycle people, not corporate types or bean counters. “Our industry is unique, like no other business,” he notes. “All these years we dealt with Drag on strictly a handshake deal – we never had a written contract, never needed it. “It’s just great to be associated with a quality company.”
Founded by Charlie Barnett in 1948, the company and Drag Specialties are celebrating dueling anniversaries this year – Barnett’s 70th and Drag’s 50th.
PERFORMANCE MACHINE – A MILLION DOLLAR PAGE
P
erry Sands first opened Performance Machine in 1970 in Paramount, CA, which, at the time, was home to a group of cottage industry shops in motorcycling’s budding aftermarket. The company’s first products were motorcycle brake systems, called Fast-Stop Brakes. Sales were good as the privately owned company forged ahead, growing at an impressive rate. However, one company in the industry felt that Performance Machine could grow at an even faster rate. It was during the early 1990s when Drag Specialties approached the company about distributing products through the company’s vast dealer network. Perry asked his brother Ted Sands, who handled marketing and advertising,
to hear the folks from Drag Specialties out. A short time later they inked the deal and by 1996 Performance Machine was featured in the catalog. “We had one page in the Drag book,” Ted recalls. approached Fox to remind him that Performance Machine’s one page amounted to $1 million in sales. To that Fox calmly replied, “Well, then, we better get some more pages!”
Turns out that one page proved to be a worthwhile investment for Drag Specialties and Performance Machine. “After that first year,” Ted says, “we sold a million dollars in brake systems.” One page, one million bucks, just like that.
Over the years those pages grew to include forged wheels, hand and foot controls and other custom products, plus the ubiquitous brake systems that started the relationship between Performance Machine and Drag Specialties.
At the following dealer and vendor meeting, Fred Fox reminded everybody during his annual message that one page in the catalog was worth approximately $20,000 in sales. Later, Ted

ARLEN NESS ENTERPRISES – IT STARTED WITH A MIRROR
W
ho would have thought that a custom motorcycle mirror would rank among Drag Specialties’ top-selling items from the FatBook? That’s precisely the result of Drag Specialties and Arlen Ness Enterprises teaming up in 1991 to offer the Stealth mirror that, overnight, became one of Drag’s leading products. The story actually begins with a handshake. As Arlen’s son Cory Ness recalls, “My dad did a handshake deal with Fred Fox, and that led to our first joint product, the Stealth mirror.”
Even before any of his products appeared in the FatBook, Arlen Ness and Fred Fox had long been friends. Here they are sometime back in the 1980s.
The mirror that started it all.
At a time when billet aluminum served as a favored material, Ness’s new design used die-cast manufacturing methods to keep the retail price low. With an initial retail price under $30, the subsequent Stealth’s sales were out of sight. “It was an absolute hit,” Cory adds.
Today the FatBook includes more than a dozen Stealth variations, some with LED turn signals incorporated into the mirror bodies. Now, about the original handshake between Fox and Ness that cinched the deal for inclusion in the 1991 catalog – that monumental handshake didn’t happen overnight. The two men had been friends in the industry for many years, and more than once Fox told Ness that one day the two of them would be doing business together. So, when Fox acquired Drag Specialties in 1988, the door towards a deal opened a little wider, eventually leading to the Drag/Ness Stealth Mirror and many other products. And, the Drag/Ness Stealth mirrors still appear in the FatBook.
JIMS USA – TOOLS THAT TECHS LOVE The real glamour is in things like billet or forged custom wheels, sexy sculpted seats or exotic exhaust systems.
Y
ou seldom hear people attending bike nights and rallies talk about items like replacement crank pins or cam puller tools for their V-twin engines. Those are, well, ordinary engine parts and tools.
But obscure engine parts and tools? Come on, other than service techs and DIYers, nobody talks much about them. At least that’s what Jim Thiessen, owner of JIMS USA, used to think. Then while attending a major V-twin dealer show one year Thiessen visited Drag Specialties’ spacious booth where he realized that the team at Drag Specialties really do
care and understand the importance of specialty items. It was that understanding, honesty and trust from Drag’s sales crew that led JIMS to become a major player in Drag Specialties’ FatBook. Among the parts numbers that he initially submitted for the catalog were those for replacement crank pins and the Inner Cam Puller Tool. “They trust us and we trust them on what products they buy for the catalog,” Thiessen notes.
PAUGHCO – BEEN THERE SINCE THE BEGINNING replacement stamped-steel primary cover for early Harley-Davidson V-twins – has been in the Drag lineup for nearly 50 years.

Tom Rudd had formed less than a year before, seemed a solid choice. Recalls Paugh today, “So I actually flew back [to Minnesota] to talk with him [Rudd] before we got going.” The two young businessmen signed the deal, and Paughco has been with Drag Specialties ever since. Looking back at Fred Fox’s acquisition of Drag Specialties in 1988, Paugh says, “It was business as usual when Fred took over. The only major change is that Fred is really aggressive in his marketing, and so we’ve grown a lot in recent years.”
You can still find those primary covers, plus countless other Paughco products, in the FatBook and OldBook.
The parts that started a 50-year relationship.
PINGEL – BUSINESS OF GOING FAST
“W
e’ve been a vendor with Drag Specialties since the mid-1980s before Fred Fox owned the company,” say Wayne and Donna Pingel, of Pingel Enterprises. “We’re thankful to have remained one of their vendors after Fred’s purchase.” “Since then, our company has grown right alongside of Drag,” they say. “Our company wouldn’t be what it is today without Drag. It’s been a great relationship with them. They’ve picked up every product that we offer to them. We can’t say enough about what a great company they’ve been, from the way they catalog our products and inventory them, to how they always pay invoices on time. Drag also works hard to protect the dealer and do the best he can for the vendor.“
The Drag/Pingel relationship isn’t always strictly business – sometimes you have to have a little fun. “Our company has sponsored Top Fuel racer Larry McBride since the mid-90s,” the Pingels say. “After he made a 5.99 ET record run – ‘First in the Five’ – in 1999 we talked with Fred about sponsoring Larry, and right away Fred jumped on board. He continued his sponsorship and Larry is now the World ET record holder at 5.61, proudly displaying the Drag Specialties logo on his drag bike.” “We’re very thankful for Fred’s continued support, and we congratulate him for his accomplishments and what he has done for the industry.”

CUSTOM CYCLE ENGINEERING – OWE IT TO THE EVO
T
o this day many Drag Specialties customers rely on Custom Cycle Engineering for their custom fork tubes and Mid-Glide and Wide-Glide frontend conversions. But in truth, the bond that firmly cemented the two companies together was Harley-Davidson’s Evolution engine that first appeared in 1984.

became an overnight hit among Evo owners. It was not much time later that those items were added to the Drag Specialties catalog.
The Evo broke new ground for HarleyDavidson, but the engine had a minor cosmetic flaw – the unsightly head bolts visually distracted from the 80-cubicinch V-twin’s clean lines.
The FatBook and OldBook still carry many of CCE’s unique Harley products, but the original CCE ownership has changed. CCE is currently run by Rick’s brother, Jim, so that countless front-end conversions and fork tube variations remain an integral part of Drag Specialties’ product line for dealers world wide. ■
That was all it took for one talented bike builder and mechanical engineer in Southern California to develop a simple yet aesthetically pleasing head-bolt kit for the new engine. Randy Smith’s new product, which he called Pasties,

Next-Level LEDs
Light Pipe Products for Powersports
C
ustom Dynamics is celebrating its 15th anniversary by launching its most ambitious product line yet. The ProBEAM line of LED and light pipe products blends quality and style for a new LED look.
The ProBEAM LED taillight with the light pipe technology provides plenty of visibility while out on the road.
Custom Dynamics says ProBEAM is the first light pipe (which is a transparent rod that transmits light lengthwise) product line in the powersports industry. In fact, there are two patents pending on the taillight alone.
The 5000K color temperature is bright, but compliant with DOT regulations, and the polycarbonate lens keeps the LEDs safe. Custom Dynamics offers both the headlamps and passing lights in a Chrome or True Black finish.
The Custom Dynamics designers started with high-quality components, then put them through rigorous testing to ensure that each ProBEAM product would provide motorcycles with enhanced safety and visibility, all while maintaining competitive pricing. The ProBEAM LED taillights were engineered from the ground up using high-quality automotive-grade LEDs with a light pipe design. Five light pipes illuminate across the taillight as the constant-on running light, while 25 high-power LEDs provide a full contrast brake light. The LED technology allows the taillights to have a low-profile design, which protrudes only two inches from the stock taillight baseplate. The classic Squareback design evokes the stock taillight, but with the LED upgrade. The taillights are available in Red or Smoke, and with or without a top license plate illumination window.
ProBEAM LED headlamp.
ProBEAM LED turn signals.
Up front, the ProBEAM LED headlamp offers automotive-grade LEDs for maximum performance combined with enhanced visibility for both the rider and other drivers. Signature solid optics create an ideal beam pattern that provides illumination down the road as well as on either side. The low-profile housing is heavy-duty, yet lightweight, die-cast aluminum that does not require a trim ring.

Riders who want even more visibility can mount ProBEAM LED passing lamps, which provide a superior beam pattern in terms of both distance and coverage. Like the headlamps, the passing lamps have a modernlooking die-cast aluminum housing that does not require a trim ring.
APRIL 2018
ProBEAM LED turn signals are the result of meticulous attention to detail. The signals maximize the LED performance with unique reflector technology, while the modular design allows an aluminum bezel to be added to the units to convert the LED clusters into Bullet Ringz or Flat Ringz. Each set of turn signals includes replacement lenses. The ProBEAM line also features LED Fillerz for newer-style Harley Touring models that have oval cutouts on the saddlebag support rails. The rear fender lights are comprised of a unit with nine light pipes that act as the running light, while 33 high-power LEDs offer full-contrast illumination. Thanks to the matching light pipe design, the LED Fillerz are a perfect complement to the ProBEAM LED taillights. The Fillerz have a Red or Smoke lens and a Chrome or Gloss Black base. All of the ProBEAM products are DOT/SAE/ECE compliant, have easy plug-and-play installation and include the Custom Dynamics Lifetime LED Warranty. ■

rag Specialties is back on the road this year with the exclusive Dealer Training Tour, giving dealers a unique insight into the latest products.
Dealers and staff will get hands-on product training and have the opportunity to meet with the industry’s leading vendors at locations all across the United States. In addition, dealers who attend will be able to takqe advantage of discounts and special incentives for attending. Attending dealers will have one-on-one product training from leading vendor representatives. The 14 participating vendors range across all facets of the market, from tires and seats, to sound systems and engine components, and more. One of the biggest benefits of attending the Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour is the chance to get up close and personal with some of the newest and most popular products on the market. Reading about a new product is helpful, but getting the details right from a brand rep who has the product in hand offers an extra level of insight. In addition, the Drag Specialties truck will have motorcycles equipped with products from the featured brands, allowing dealers to see how they look on a bike and to get ideas for their own showroom displays. Dealers will take away an increased knowledge in each product as well as more confidence in how to sell those products to customers.

As expected, exclusive product training is not the only perk of attending the Dealer Training Tour. Dealers who participate in the tour will be eligible for a tour-only discount that lasts for the two weeks following the day of the event they attend. As an added bonus, some vendors have 24-hour incentives for attendees. Drag Specialties launched the Dealer Training Tour in 2017, and response to it has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only do dealers get to take advantage of product training and discounts, but they and their staff get to do it all without making a costly trip to another part of the country. Drag Specialties is taking the training to the dealers beginning in March, with the first Dealer Training Tour stop in Houston. In all, the tour will be rolling through 24 cities. From Texas, the tour heads up North, with stops in major markets like Baltimore and Chicago, before swinging down to Atlanta. California stops include Los Angeles and San Francisco, while on the opposite coast, the tour will conclude in Florida with stops in both Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa. ■

Extreme Function
Performance Bagger Parts
A hard-charging former road racer turned HarleyDavidson rider, MJK’s Dale Yamada set out to create performance-oriented parts for the new generation of aggressive Bagger riders.
Y
ou can take a road racer off the track, put him on a Bagger and, in Dale Yamada’s case, he will go right back to the track. It provides the best proving ground for the high-performance Bagger parts that his company, MJK Performance, designs and produces. Yamada says sportbike riders don’t mind seeing a Bagger alongside them at track days, but he has learned to keep the stereo system off so he won’t startle anyone. While testing Bagger parts on the race track might seem unusual to anyone else, it makes total sense to Yamada, who says that MJK Performance designs parts for “extreme function.” “I want all my bikes to still look like a Bagger, of course, but this is a newer style of bike to me. It’s kind of untapped territory. I want to build particular parts that bring that performance side out,” says Yamada. “Because there are so many parts out there that make a bike look pretty, but there’s not a lot of parts that you bolt on the outside of the bike that have a performance function.” Parts like the Cush Chain Drive Kit is a perfect example of performance blended with style. It looks good on a Bagger, but still recalls Yamada’s love of racing.

MJK Performance is a new vendor to Drag Specialties. The company is family owned and operated; Yamada’s wife Michelle works there, and even their 15-year-old son will help out with the CNC machine and lathe. Before opening MJK Performance in Calgary, Alberta, Yamada was an entrepreneur, and building HarleyDavidsons was just a hobby. Every time he finished a bike, though, someone else would see it and offer to buy it. Eventually, Yamada got an offer not on a bike, but on his business. He sold it and opened up MJK Performance, making his full-time entrance into the motorcycle industry. In many ways, Yamada had been preparing to own a performance shop for most of his life. He learned as much as he could from his dad, who didn’t ride motorcycles, but knew a lot of the skills required to build one. “He taught me how to weld, he taught me how to paint, he taught me how to machine. He taught me everything,” says Yamada. “And, ever since I was a teenager, every single job I took on was to hone and perfect a certain thing I wanted to do. I worked at a body shop just so I could learn how to do bodywork. I worked at a machine shop so I could learn how to machine properly. I worked in racecar engine shops, racecar chassis shops that built full-tube chassis. It’s not just a matter of ‘Oh, I

like motorcycles,’ it’s 30 years of being a gear head and being in the industry.” When Yamada opened for business in 2006, his dad played another pivotal role. Yamada was trying to find the right name for the shop, and he finally settled on his dad’s nickname: Mad Jap. “He was a 6-foot-4, 360-pound, very large, very massive Japanese guy. Hands like a bear! So all of his friends would call him Mad Jap,” explains Yamada. “I thought, well, my dad passed away just three months before I started this company, so it just popped into my head – Mad Jap. Because my dad pretty much taught me everything.” Yamada eventually changed the name from Mad Jap Kustoms to MJK Performance as his focus continued to be on producing performance Bagger parts.
A year ago, before MJK had its own CNC machine, Yamada needed some parts made on one. It took a while to find the right machinist for the job, Phil Butterworth. He wound up becoming a partner in a bigger sense, joining MJK Performance as a business partner. MJK is moving to a larger facility to help accommodate the growing demand for its extreme function parts. Drag Specialties is carrying a full line, including parts like axle adjusters, floorboards, foot pegs, handlebar risers, and controls. ■
MJK PERFORMANCE
The floor boards, foot pegs and foot controls are all designed and purposebuilt with intense riding in mind. In fact, the Max Lean floor boards are designed to provide plenty of cornering clearance.

The company has been growing a lot lately, thanks in part to a new five-axis CNC machine and a lathe that has helped get parts off the line faster. The equipment was a bit of a compromise for Yamada, who loves handbuilding things but recognized the need for an increased production output.
Check out the detailed machining on the MJK cush drive chain conversion kit. Yamada says he wants the details of all his parts to be absolutely perfect.
Still, it was ideal for someone with Yamada’s design ideas. He says, “I always said to people that I knew that if I got a CNC machine I’d be dangerous. I’d go all out and spend time on machining things that people don’t want to do because they’re scared to go too far and not make money at it, whereas I’m scared The pull-back riser kits from MJK Performance give Bagger bikes that not to do enough. I don’t want to be mediocre. aggressive stance so many young riders are looking for these days. You’re always chasing the perfect part. You’re always improving.”
The bike lift spools on MJK’s touring rear axle adjuster kit are a direct nod to Yamada’s racing background.

TIRES
Right Tire for the Ride
Introducing the Dealer Reference Guide Michelin even has Scorcher tires for the HarleyDavidson Street line. Check out the new Dealer Reference Guide to find a perfect match.
W
ith 29 available sizes, and four distinct variations, there’s a Michelin Scorcher that’s going to be the right tire for every Harley-Davidson. Bagger, Sportster, Softail, Dyna or Street, there’s a Scorcher for them all, and that isn’t just Michelin talking. Harley-Davidson itself has confirmed it by putting a Michelin Scorcher on 11 of the 30 newmodel 2018 Harleys leaving the factory, and naming the Scorcher as the factory-approved replacement tire for many of the bikes not coming with one as OE. What’s behind all this? Simple, HarleyDavidson and Michelin co-developed and co-branded the Scorchers. It started back in 2007 and since then more than 1,000,000 Michelin Scorcher tires have been installed on Harleys at the factory and countless more at dealerships come replacement time.
DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE
★
Is the Scorcher 11 the smart pick? Or is it going to be the 21, 31 or 32 that’ll deliver the optimum level of ride, feel, handling and durability that were designed in for a specific application? Michelin’s got the answer to that, too. It’s the Dealer Reference Guide, a handy, easy-to-understand full-color brochure that outlines the important features of each Scorcher variant and recommends applications for each one. Drag Specialties dealers receiving this issue in the mail will find a free copy of the Dealer Reference Guide to the Scorchers accompanying this magazine. For those who didn’t receive a copy of the guide with this issue, contact your Drag rep to get one. Armed with that Guide you’ll know, and can recommend, the correct Scorcher every time. Those Scorcher 11s, for instance, allaround performers that are OE on Street, Sportster and Softail models, are especially popular in many applications. They’re available in seven front and six rear sizes to do it.
Michelin’s Scorcher 21
Dealers take note – the Scorcher 31 provides a supple, comfortable ride for Dynas, Sportsters and Touring models.
It’s no wonder riders ask for Scorchers, and until recently the only place they could get one was at an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership. That’s no longer the case. Drag Specialties has the Scorchers now, too, and with six new sizes launched in 2017 augmenting the original lineup there’s a Scorcher for most every application.
56
With the Scorcher 11s, 21s, 31s and 32s all available, and with those 29 different sizes offered, picking the right one for the application can be confusing. There’s a lot of technology to choose from here, a variety of tread patterns, a number of different carcass designs and varying compound blends.
APRIL 2018
The Scorcher 21, original equipment on the Street Rod, brings inspiration and technology from Michelin’s highest-performing hypersport tires to the cruiser world to serve up a light, nimble feel with plenty of agility. Then there’s the Scorcher 31 with its supple, comfortable ride. It’s a real favorite in a lot of applications, everything from Dynas and Sportsters to Touring models. The Scorcher 32, designed especially for the Fat Bob, brings advanced rubber chemistry to the game for excellent traction on wet or dry roads. ■

Soundtrack for a Glide Big Pig Complete Audio Kits
W
ild Boar Audio is releasing a range of new products in early 2018, and among them are what the company has dubbed Big Pig kits for Street Glides and Road Glides. Both of the Big Pig kits are complete audio solutions that include Wild Boar’s new WBA 600.4 amplifier, which is a 600W amp that makes 150 watts x four at 4 Ohms. One of the most attractive aspects of the WBA 600.4 amplifier is the Reduced EMI Technology (R.E.M.I.T.) technology built into it. The WBA 600.4 is a Class D amp. The good news about Class D amps is that they are easy on a bike’s charging system, they do not generate a lot of heat and they are compact. The bad news is that all Class D amps (regardless of brand) interfere with FM reception due to EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference.) Wild Boar Audio decided that FM interference was unacceptable and has been working for five years on finding a solution, which turned out to be how the traces and parts on the circuit board inside the amplifier are placed. As little as 2mm of movement in the circuit board design can make a significant difference, and Wild Boar Audio successfully engineered a design that greatly improves FM reception. The circuit design is proprietary to Wild Boar Audio, and it is referred to as R.E.M.I.T. The Big Pig SG kit (p/n 4405-0497) for 2014 and newer Street Glides has front speakers that are specifically designed for FLH fairings. At the back, a set of WBA 1694 6x9s and Hogtunes saddlebag lids complete the kit. The WBA 6x9 speakers mate perfectly with the Hogtunes lids
so the setup remains fully waterproof. The 600-watt amp powers all of this. The Big Pig RG kit (p/n 4405-0498) for 2015 and on Road Glides includes everything needed to mount the amp and Road Glide-specific speakers into FLTR fairings. Both chrome and black trims for the front grills are included so that a customer can choose their preferred trim without ordering an additional part. Like the SG kit, Wild Boar 6x9 speakers in Hogtunes lids and the 600-watt amp are included. Each of the Big Pig kits come complete with everything needed for installation, including wiring. One box and one part number keep it simple for dealers. The kits are fully expandable to accommodate additional speakers and amps as new products become available. Like testing for the R.E.M.I.T. technology, a lot of research and development went into the Big Pig kits. The first prototypes were hand-built, and then a small production run allowed Wild Boar engineers to tweak the product. From there, a team of 10 beta testers received a Big Pig kit for final pre-release testing. Those beta testers included some of the biggest names in the industry, including Paul Yaffe and the crew at Revolution Performance. ■

ometimes, making one change on a motorcycle can be like tipping over the first domino in a line. That is certainly the case when it comes to swapping out stock handlebars for something taller, which almost always requires a new set of cables to match the added height. LA Choppers has an enormous list of applications for cable kits that keep handlebar swaps hassle-free for both Harley-Davidson dealers and riders. And “enormous” is no exaggeration – the company has cable kits for most Harley models from 1996 to current, including hydraulic and ABS models. The custom cable kits come in a wide variety of lengths to accommodate a whole range of handlebar heights. Each kit contains the correct length throttle, idle and clutch cables, as well as the front brake line with a chrome T-junction, fittings and banjos with copper crush washers. In other words, each LA Choppers kit aims to take care of all the dominoes tipped over by the handlebar swap. To make it even easier for dealers, LA Choppers built www.handlebarcables.com, a website designed to help navigate the fitment of the cables. Simply enter the year and model of the motorcycle, plus the handlebars that are being installed. You’ll then be provided with the Drag Specialties part number for the corresponding kit, as well as a list of everything inside the kit and individual replacement part numbers.

LA Choppers offers both a standard cable kit as well as a complete kit, which includes the electrical wire extensions. Both kits come in several finish options, including stainless braided, Midnight and black vinyl. The traditional stainless braided kit has chrome-plated fittings, and the lines have a clear-coated exterior to enhance their looks and to protect them from abrasion. The Midnight series kits come with the clutch and brake lines covered in a black smoke tinted coating with pure black fittings throughout. The lines have a graphite or carbon fiber look, which looks especially good when combined with blacked out controls and covers on the bike. Black vinyl/stainless cable kits include a black vinyl clutch line and brake lines with chrome fittings, banjo bolts and crush washers. And of course, LA Choppers has plenty of aftermarket handlebars to go with those cable kits. The mix of styles, heights and applications includes handlebars as tall as 19 inches, but not to worry – LA Choppers has just the right cable kit for that swap. ■

Reinventing a Revolution
Introducing the New Hypercharger ES
Kuryakyn’s Hypercharger ES features state-of-the-art electronic throttle-response butterfly engagement for precise movement. This eliminates the vacuum-operated fluttering of previous models.
The radical new design is precision engineered with what Kuryakyn refers to as electronic throttle-response butterflies. An integrated servomotor connects to the coil to actuate the butterflies smoothly and precisely with every twist of the throttle. This feature eliminates the inconsistent vacuum operation of previous Hypercharger models, creating an interactive experience between rider, motorcycle, and air cleaner. Current availability includes fitment for MilwaukeeEight Softail and Touring, as well as Twin Cam models. “Our goal was to build on the heritage established through one of the industry’s most recognizable products,” says Kuryakyn industrial design manager Michael Bates. “We built around the framework of the original, with the most recognizable feature being the blower-style butterflies. Our team came up with rock-solid servomotor componentry, and then collectively completed thousands of testing miles to ensure it not only functioned properly, but also delivered on the promise of better performance.”
Accessory Classic Faceplate kits transform Hypercharger ES styling in minutes.
Additional performance upgrades for the ES include a new Kuryakyn-designed high-flow K&N filter with larger surface area than the original Hypercharger filter. The larger filter element offers approximately 10 percent more airflow, improved CFM rating, and utilizes a unique end cap with an internal stinger design to direct concentrated airflow into the throttle body.
W
hen you hear the word Hypercharger, think Kuryakyn, the maker of those hot rod-inspired V-twin air cleaners. Now, after hundreds of thousands of units sold worldwide over the past 28 years, Kuryakyn’s journey has come full circle with the introduction of the completely redesigned Hypercharger ES. This is not your father’s Hypercharger. The new Hypercharger ES represents substantial updates in appearance and performance. Kuryakyn product development put in countless hours of research and development crafting a design that pays homage to its predecessor, while also ensuring a healthy dose of modern technology and style was injected into the iconic bloodline.
Protecting all that state-of-the-art technology is the Hypercharger ES’ modern, aggressively styled modular housing constructed from high-quality A380 aluminum. Available in three finish options, the modular design allows users to easily alter the ES’ styling with Kuryakyn’s Classic Faceplate Kits (sold separately) that completely transform the look in minutes. “In designing the ES, we took inspiration from modern-era muscle cars that emphasize muscular lines and an aggressive stance,” Bates says. “The Hypercharger’s lineage means a great deal to Kuryakyn. Our entire team played a role in developing the new Hypercharger ES, starting with design conceptualization and continuing throughout the testing phase in order to create a product that blends performance with style.” ■

Form, Function and Freestyle The Accidental Origin of Thrashin Supply
Like others in the new generation of young V-twin riders, Lance Coury’s years as an aggressive moto rider – an X-Games gold medalist no less – influences the pavement pounding miles he puts on his Harley-Davidson. That experience is also what pushed him to launch Thrashin Supply Company.
L
ance Coury is an X-Games gold medalist moto competitor, who also happens to be a Harley-Davidson rider since his teens. Not a lot of aftermarket parts companies cater to motorcyclists who have one foot in both worlds, so Coury simply started making his own parts. That turned into making parts for his friends, and that quickly morphed into Thrashin Supply Company. These days, Thrashin focuses on performance-driven parts, bags and gloves for V-twin riders, catering to riders who want the same kind of versatility that Coury was looking for when he started the company in 2014. These are parts inspired – and informed – by Coury’s interest in aggressive riding. Thrashin products are now available through Drag Specialties, with more than 125 items in stock. One of those items is the part that launched Coury’s unexpected career as the founder and president of Thrashin, a top clamp. Coury, an X-Games gold medalist in Moto X Speed & Style, has been riding motorcycles since he was 3 years old. After he started riding Harleys in his teens, Coury’s friends followed suit, and soon there was a group of them riding around Los Angeles together. Coury decided to make a part they could all use, eventually settling on a top clamp. Very quickly, Coury found himself in the parts business. He says, “I made 20 of them or so, and we put them on the bikes, but then friends of friends wanted them, and more

people. So I made another batch of 20, and they sold. So we started making T-shirts and sweatshirts, and then we made foot pegs. Every time we made a batch of parts, they’d sell, so we’d make more.” The fledgling business needed a name. At the time, Coury and his friends were painting the walls in their garage as well as some of their bikes, and the word “thrashin’” kept showing up in the art. The name stuck. Although the top clamps were born of a desire to create a uniform look for friends’ Harleys, a lot of the parts that wound up in the Thrashin catalog were born from wanting a particular product that just didn’t exist yet, like handlebars that fit a Harley, but were designed for a freestyle rider. “When we were first getting our bikes about 10 years ago, it was hard to find handlebars that we wanted to use,” Coury says. “We’d seen a lot of guys using dirt bike handlebars, and they were making custom risers to use them. We didn’t want a motocross brand on our Harleys. We wanted bars that were a little more aggressive than what was out there, but at the same time still had enough comfort and pull back in the rise and a shape where you could go long distances.” The resulting Thrashin High Bend, Mid Bend and Low Bend handlebars, Coury notes, can accommodate wheelies and burnouts as well as a road trip to Sturgis.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Thrashin foot pegs have freestyle genetics, too. The P-54 and P-54 Slims in black and silver look right at home on a Harley, but they have a strong grip surface with a slight radius for a more secure rider stance. Thrashin floorboards have a sturdy grip pattern, too.
THRASHIN SUPPLY
The Thrashin foot pegs reflect the company’s motocross/freestyle roots and provide a firm and brawny perch for Harley riders.
The Essential saddlebags are ideal for riders looking for minimalist storage that’s less bulky than traditional bags, yet holds everything needed for a day on the road.
Wanting something that couldn’t be found was also the inspiration for the Essential saddlebags, which have been a huge hit with Thrashin customers. Coury was looking for bags that were less bulky than traditional saddlebags, with just enough space for basics, like a hoodie, a bottle of water and a few other small items. Coury created his handlebar line to fit a Harley-Davidson and appeal to dirtbike riders looking for a bar equally adept at aggressive street riding as it was for cruising to Sturgis.
The bags are especially popular with commuters because the compact 11-inch x 8-inch x 5-inch size is ideal for their day-to-day items. The Essential saddlebags are constructed of a durable material that won’t fade in the sun, and they close with water-resistant YKK zippers. Drag Specialties will also be stocking several models of Thrashin gloves. “In my bloodline is the glove industry. A lot of my family makes gloves, so I thought we’d make a pair of Thrashin gloves,” Coury says. Both his dad and his uncle own glove businesses, so Coury decided to design a style that would suit Harley riders while being slimmer than a traditional motorcycle glove. Among the popular Thrashin styles are the Stealth gloves. The minimal design has a four-way stretch on the top of the hand, so it moves freely. Touchscreen fingertips mean a rider can stay in touch easily, and the palm is thin enough to provide good feel on the grips. The Siege gloves are a full-leather option. The perforated wrist-length gloves come in brown or black, while the full gauntleted Siege glove is not perforated for colder rides. The Siege line is also touchscreen-friendly. ■

The Ultimate Advertisement Custom Bikes with Production Parts
The imagination of Ken’s Factory founder Ken Nagai knows no bounds. Just check out this V-twin powered 1962 Mazda Carol that features products from his company’s custom parts lineup.
O
ne of the latest custom builds by renowned Japanese bike builder Ken Nagai is — a car? Yes, a 1962 Mazda Carol is the newest addition to the Ken’s Factory lineup of custom vehicles.
Riding the stock bike was enough for Nagai’s friend for a while, but eventually he returned to the shop and asked for the full custom treatment. His only request was that the Softail be painted red. The rest was up to Nagai.
It just proves that whenever Nagai sets his mind to something, whether it’s a custom Harley-Davidson, a new aftermarket part or even a car, you can always count on him to do something unexpected.
Tycoon has a lot of modifications, including a 2-inch stretch and a built motor, as well as a huge list of one-off and production Ken’s Factory parts, like the fenders, gas tank, handlebars, mirrors, hand and foot controls, lights, license mount, rotors, air cleaner, cam cover, and exhaust.
And while the little Mazda has four wheels, it does have some connections to motorcycles. It is powered by a Twin-Cam engine and features a Ken’s Factory rocker cover and cam cover. Nagai opened Ken’s Factory in 1990 to provide customers with production parts that matched the style of his custom builds. Today, Nagai still uses those production parts on his custom motorcycles. For him, it’s the ultimate advertisement. Among those ads is Tycoon, which started out as a 2003 100th Anniversary Edition Softail Deuce. Nagai had acquired the stock Harley, but it was just sitting around his shop until a friend saw the bike and bought it from him.
While Nagai maintains that he casually put together the bike as his limited time allowed, the response to the bike has been enthusiastic, both for his friend and for fans of Nagai’s style. Some of the Ken’s Factory parts that have shown up on Nagai’s builds include the Neo-Fusion one-piece riser clamp and matching billet dog bone risers. In fact, the entire reason they are now in production is because fans saw them on some of Nagai’s show bikes and requested the same parts. The Neo-Fusion line blends tried-and-true parts with a modern design. The line has grips, foot pegs, shifter pegs,
Billet dog bone risers feature that distinct Ken’s Factory detail.

Full-Pressure Fix Parts for Improved Performance
Race Series oiling system
HP+ oiling system
Y
our customers on 2017 and 2018 Harley-Davidsons may have noticed that the check oil warning on those Milwaukee-Eights is frequently coming on, and the oil level in the engine sump is rising way too high, way too fast. These aren’t isolated incidents. The engineers at HarleyDavidson are reportedly aware of the situation and have already gone through a number of oil pump revisions. The engine specialists at Feuling Parts have taken note of this, too, and the response from Oceanside, CA comes in the form of a couple of full Oiling System Packs for the Milwaukee-Eight. There’s an HP+ Package and a Race Series Kit that both address those oiling problems head-on. Feuling’s done it with special-design high-volume/high-flow billet oils pumps, high-flow special design camplates, a full set of performance roller lifters and a complete installation kit. The result is a sweet balance of pressure, volume and flow, a 50 percent reduction in engine-sump oil levels, reduced engine and oil temperatures, and gains in both horsepower and torque. Both pumps feature increased and optimized scavenge port holes and galleys with everything custom-matched to the corresponding Feuling camplate and, in turn, to the Harley-Davidson’s engine case. Each pump is bench tested with its relief valve seated and sealed to a minimum of 30 psi with full pop-off at 55 psi to 60 psi and both styles feature a pair of highpowered magnets to aid in the pickup of steel debris and to protect the pump. The matched billet camplates have enlarged reservoirs and oil passages throughout for increased oil flow to the lifters, piston cooling jets, crankshaft, rod bearings, oil cooler, and the oil tank. All this is good for an average 20 percent more pressure and 20 percent more scavenge volume over the stock Milwaukee-Eight components, 15-degree to 30-degree cooler oil temperatures, and a 15-degree to 25-degree drop in engine temperatures. Add those slow-bleed-down Feuling lifters to the picture and it’s a fix for those oiling and scavenge issues. ■

M
ost Harley-Davidson riders know that a set of custom wheels is one big addition that can completely change the look of a motorcycle. One sticking point, however, is that custom wheels and new tires can often put a big dent in the checkbook. Coastal Moto’s wheel-and-tire packages can change all this, pronto. A set of custom-cast Largo or Atlantic 3D wheels – complete with bearings and valve stems and Metzeler ME888 tires already mounted – are available at a price that’s sure to make your customers’ buying decision a whole lot easier. In fact, that complete wheel set comes in at a retail price from $1,149.95 to $1,199.95. Check the FatBook for detailed pricing. Show all those wheel-dreaming riders the custom-cast Coastal Moto Largo and Atlantic 3Ds. They’re beautiful. Custom-contoured with 3D looks, they’re precision-cast and finished and have a 2-Year Warranty on workmanship and finish and a Lifetime Structural Warranty. Both styles, Largo and Atlantic, are available with Chrome or Black Cut finishes and they’re offered in two of the most popular sizes, 21 x 3.5 for the front and 18 x 5.5 for the rear. Ready-to-go applications cover all 2008 through 2018 FLHT, FLHR and FLHX front-wheel fitments and the 2009 through 2018 rears. The wheels accept stock Harley-Davidson lug-mount brake rotors, cush-drives and pulleys for added costsavings, and both styles are available for standard braking situations or with intelligent ABS bearings so they’ll also
work with linked brake Harley models, without the need for any ABS recalibration or added modules. The more you look at this the better the picture gets. And then there are the tires. The wheels come mounted with a set of Metzeler ME888 Marathon Ultras. High-mileage, premium tires designed specifically for custom-touring applications, the front tire is a 120/70-21, the rear a 180/55-B18. All that’s required is to swap over the rotors, cush-drives and pulleys, balance-up the assembly and put it all on the bike for an instant custom look. Coastal Moto’s wheel-and-tire packages add up to big-time savings in both time and money for everyone involved. Riders get that custom gratification they’re after and get it while still keeping the bank-balance in check. For dealers it’s an equally easy and convenient way to go, wheel-and-tire sales all rolled into one. All this is available exclusively through Drag Specialties so make sure your customers know about what amounts to a smoking deal. ■

A Complete Range of Slip-Ons and Systems Double Down slip-on mufflers

EXHAUSTS
Power-Building Pipes
Loose Cannon slip-ons
iders shopping for a Harley-Davidson exhaust, slip-ons or full-system replacements, should take a look at Firebrand. Handmade in Anaheim, CA and designed by experts in the custom/performance motorcycle-exhaust business, those Firebrand pipes, mufflers and full systems are the real deal. The applications cover all the Harley models, Baggers, Softails, Dynas, Sportsters and Streets, both 500 and 750, and Drag Specialties has them.
Fifty Two52 exhaust
Let’s start with the slip-ons because Firebrand has plenty to choose from. There are the big and bold Baritone 4-inch mufflers and the unique looking and sounding Quadradical Double Downs for a hot-rod vibe. The Grand Prix and Loose Cannons are both offered in a number of sizes and styles, and there are Rip Rods, with universal variations available for custom-rigid builds. All the bases are covered, with applications right through the whole Harley-Davidson lineup. Those Firebrand slip-ons bring some interesting features to the table. The Baritones 4-inch muffler bodies have fluted end caps that can be rotated into any one of four positions and the tone, as the name suggests, sounds off with a deep, bass rumble. For the Double Downs, a Quadradical end treatment gives these slip-ons a four-pipe look, and the fit is totally compatible with OEM and most aftermarket head pipes. Then there’s the Grand Prix. MotoGP inspired, these Slipons are pure-performance with an aggressive tone and a nice power boost. And, of course, there are the Loose Cannons, the powerpacked mufflers that started it all at Firebrand. Feature filled, they have free-flowing baffles, perforated cores, dual-layer packing and a unique flash-suppressor end treatment. For a simple, cool retro-style/ripple-pipe muffler with old-school end caps, there are the Rip Rods.
Rip-Rod slip-on mufflers look the part on a stripped down, go-fast Sportster.
Most of the slip-ons are available with either a Chrome or Black Ceramic finish. Firebrand also has good-looking, good sounding and power-building full-systems riders need to see. The Upstart 2-into-2s lead off with 1¾-inch headpipes stepped up to a big 2½-inches and it all ends with those fourtipped Quadradical mufflers. The race-inspired Fifty Two52s, are 2-into-1 systems with a no-nonsense look and great sound. Named after the rpm point where an engine’s horsepower curve equals its torque, in looks, sound, attitude and performance these upswept pipes are all about muscle. There are lots of direct-fit applications for the Firebrand full systems, too, and once again those Chrome or Ceramic Black finishes are available. ■

New Season, New Looks Start with a Bike Makeover
A new-look addition can be as dramatic as an open-belt primary, something that’ll definitely get noticed, or it could be a brand-new set of forward controls, some pegs or new floorboards. Custom levers and hand-controls are another possibility, or maybe custom brake calipers. Even something as simple as a new rear pulley and a fresh bel t can bring a smile. The point is, BDL/GMA has all of that and more. When customers come looking for new parts for the new riding season, point them toward the broad lineup of products from BDL and GMA.
A
new riding season is here and riders want to kick it off in style. For some that’ll mean a new bike, but for many Harley-Davidson riders it’s going to be a new look and feel for the one they already own. There are a lot of ways to get there, but one company you can point these riders toward is BDL/GMA.
No one is going to be left out here, either. Applications for all this cover the Harley-Davidson lineup, all years, all models. Those eye-popping primary drives, for instance, are available for everything from the earliest Panheads and Knuckleheads to the newest Milwaukee-Eights. The new master-cylinder and lever assemblies have cylinder-bore options of 9/16-inch, 5/8-inch and 11/16-inch bore sizes and there are perch-and-lever setups for cable-style clutches, too. All this is available with or without switch kits that include momentary switches and chrome buttons. ■

Wiring Friendly Handlebars
M
ost custom handlebar installations include pulling lots of wires through the tubing, hardly a quick and easy process. Moreover, once those wires have been fished through there’s no telling what shape they’re in inside the tight bends and sharp corners of today’s popular bars. Misfit Industries has taken that worry away, and possibly cut hours off the job of a handlebar swap. The company has done it with internally smooth Fluid-Cast Corners, a unique handlebar manufacturing technique with a lot going for it. (The technique involves injecting molten steel into a casting.) Misfit’s Brawler, Street Rage and Streamline handlebars have the look riders want and are made with those Fluid-Cast Corners. Cast-steel components, they’re used at all the corners and joints, and in the clamping and grip areas. The bars still have that sharp-bend look on the outside that riders want, but the cast-steel inserts are smooth on the inside. Seamlessly blended into the handlebar’s mild-steel tub-

ing, they replace the commonly used cut, mitered and welded corner-and-joint manufacturing technique. Wires slip right through those smooth Fluid-Cast Corners easy as can be and once in place there’s nothing that’s going to damage them. Take a good look here, and at the Misfit Brawler, Street Rage and Streamline handlebars. They all incorporate those Fluid-Cast Corners, they’re all big 1¼-inch bars, available in different heights, styles, pullbacks and widths and they make pulling wires a breeze. ■

The pistons have a dome shape to accept bathtub 85cc or teardrop 95cc heads. The crowns and top ring groove are both hard anodized. This process aids in heat deflection and prevention of corrosion from alcohol fuels, and it prevents the top ring from micro welding to the groove.

The Rigid Range
Classic Seats, Modern Comfort
L
ePera Motorcycle Seats has plenty of options for rigids, ranging from luxurious two-piece seats to sleek solo options.
The Signature II 2-piece
Bare Bones solo
Passengers on a rigid or chopper can get comfortable with the Rigid Baron II 2-piece or Signature II 2-piece, variations of their single-piece counterparts. The Baron II 2-piece features a 9-inch wide space for the driver, and 6 inches for the passenger. Another option is the Baron II 2-piece with a 14-inch back for a real old-school chopper look. These styles were all the rage when the seats were created back in the ’70s. Talk about coming full circle! LePera goes for total comfort with the Signature II 2-piece. Its deep seat has a 10-inch width for the driver and a cushioned six-inch width for the passenger. Riders who prefer to go it alone can opt for the Bare Bones solo seat. It is LePera’s thinnest seat, with a low, aggressive style and a comfortable width of 8¾ inches.
Spring-mounted solo options include the classic Solo Large and the Buddy Boy Large, both measuring 15-inches long X 13-inches wide. The Solo Large has a heritage dating all the way back to the early days of motorcycling, and LePera’s version dates to the ’70s – an iconic style that never goes out of fashion. Both seats are built on the same base plate LePera has been making since the 1970s, which is combined with a new high-density molded foam foundation for a killer look. Each seat includes a black powder coated universal nose bracket, with spring kits sold separately. ■

High Caliber
Popular Handlebars Now Solo
L
ast year, Magnum Shielding introduced the Caliber handlebar kits. Now, those same Caliber handlebars are being offered as standalone products for added versatility.
Caliber handlebars feature the same dedication to aesthetics, quality and design found in other Magnum Shielding products. The handlebars, all made in the USA, are available in Bagger or ape hanger styles, with 12-inch, 14inch and 16-inch height options in a finish of either heavy chrome or powder coated gloss black. They are 1¼-inches in diameter and have 3½-inch on-center knurling. The TIG-welded construction has triple-configuration rosette welds for strength. The control mounts are machined, instead of being swaged, for a clean, tight look, and the handlebars are compatible with standard controls, including a hydraulic clutch. While the Caliber bars look good on the outside, just as much attention was given to the interior. The internal tube edges are chamfered and all weld seams are deburred, so

pulling through wiring will be smooth. To make it even easier, the Caliber handlebars come pre-loaded with a proprietary pull-through sleeving — just insert the wires into the sleeving, then pull the sleeving from the opposite end of the bars. Magnum Shielding still offers the Caliber handlebars as part of a complete kit, too. The kit comes with either throttle and idle control cables or pre-terminated throttleby-wire extensions, clutch cable or hydraulic clutch line, DOT brake lines, copper crush washers, hardware, and terminated turn signal and switch wiring extensions. ■

The OptiMate DC-to-DC Charger
T
here are times when a rider is nowhere near an AC power outlet, but might need to charge their motorcycle’s battery. Sure, you can jumpstart a 12V battery if you have the correct jumper cables in hand, but the problem may re-appear the next morning even after riding for hours to recharge. If that battery has developed sulphation, it needs re-conditioning before it will once again hold a charge. If you have a flat 12.8V-13.2V lithium (LiFePO4) battery, jump starting is risky; the battery may suffer permanent damage if high current is dumped into it. It is best to slowly recharge that low-volt lithium battery. The new OptiMate DC to DC is a perfect and safe solution for any powersport battery, including 12.8V-13.2V lithium batteries. It’s fully automatic, simply hook it up to a fully charged 12V source battery (the customer’s car or truck) and then within a minute, to the flat 12V lead-acid or 12.8V-13.2V lithium battery — even a lithium battery with built in BMS (battery management system) protection.
The OptiMate DC to DC battery charger
The OptiMate DC to DC will automatically recondition that flat low-volt battery, charge it at 2 Amps, then test and maintain the battery. Good news for the impatient customer, with a charge rate of 2 Amps a typical cruiser motorcycle battery could start an engine in a short while. ■
