Bike Week 2018 Stor y and ph o to s by D o n Em d e
M
otorcycles have been coming to Florida since 1903 when a new annual event called the “Winter Speed Carnival” began. Two-, three- and four-wheel vehicles competed for top honors, with Indian co-founder Oscar Hedstrom personally flying his company’s colors on the hard-packed stretch of sand between Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach. He set a speed record of 57.35 miles per hour that first year, beating out automotive manufacturer Ransom Olds and other pioneers of motor sports. In 1937, the Daytona 200 motorcycle races were added to the schedule, which drew top competitors from around the country, as well as a host of spectators to enjoy the Florida sunshine and ride their motorcycles. “Bike Week” was born.
This old postcard shows the view of the beach back in the days of the Winter Speed Carnival. Anything with wheels could get in on the action. Don Emde Collection
Fast forward to 2018, I celebrated my 50th year since my first trip to Bike Week in 1968 when I raced in the amateur roadraces at the Daytona International Speedway. I kept very busy during my trip this year with much to do in my three worlds: V-twin, Metric and Historic. In this issue you can also check out some other Daytona Bike Week sights in a pictorial by our Florida reporter Joe Kress. We also continue the celebration of Drag Specialties’ 50th anniversary this year. Be sure to read the fun story of the history of Drag Specialties Seats beginning on page 26. ■
Ride Safe!
And we say farewell to Carls Speed Shop on Beach Street in Daytona Beach. Bonneville and drag racing legend Carl Morrow has been in business since 1969—at this location since 1997—but at age 80, he has decided to retire this year. A long-time customer of Drag Specialties, we wish Carl all the best in his retirement.
It was great to catch up with some of my friends and customers in the V-twin world at Destination Daytona. From left is Yours Truly with Terry Rymer (GM at Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City, SD), Tom Motzko (Drag Specialties), Jason Spillars (Coastal Moto Wheels) and Jim Matchette (Drag Specialties).

NEWS EVENTS Exclusive Training Tour for Drag Dealers ANAHEIM, CA. – APRIL 10, 2018 Photos by Dennis Johnson

rag Specialties dealers from across Southern California had the opportunity to get some indepth product training at a recent stop of Drag’s Exclusive Dealer Training Tour.
The dealers gathered in a business center in Anaheim, CA in April to get the inside scoop from product specialists with Custom Dynamics, Metzeler/Pirelli, Saddlemen and TecMate. The event kicked off with food and refreshments, a break that gave those in attendance a chance to network and meet up with old industry friends before the official business started.
motorcycles equipped with the very products they’d just heard about. The Anaheim stop was just one of 24 cities that the tour visited. The tour is part of Drag Specialties’ effort to bring product training and show discounts directly to dealers and their staff. Dealers come away from the local shows with increased product knowledge, and some extra insight on selling those products. ■
Not only did the intensive meeting offer them the chance to learn more about such products and sales tools as Custom Dynamics new ProBEAM line and Saddlemen’s Seat Center, it also allowed them to address the daily business concerns they had, and get some one-on-one time with their Drag reps. After the presentations, the dealers were invited outside to the Drag Specialties big rig to check out a number of

NEWS EVENTS K&N Named Official Filter for American Flat Track
In a world filled with so much doubt & to live in a free country that restricts how motorcycles are modified, we felt that riders needed to hear some good news for a change...
NAMZ is happy to announce a LIFETIME WARRANTY on Badlands Modules starting January 1st 2017! (some restrictions apply)

K
&N has been named the series’ Official Performance Filter for the upcoming American Flat Track season.
As part of that partnership, K&N will award a $500 holeshot bounty to the rider grabbing the holeshot at each AFT Twins Main Event throughout the 2018 campaign. Last season, K&N-backed riders such as Brad Baker, Sammy Halbert, and Shayna Texter routinely battled for the checkered flag in both AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines and AFT Singles competition. Expect more of the same in 2018. “K&N is thrilled to join AFT as the Official Filter,” said Ross Berlanga, K&N brand manager. “K&N was born in the dirt, so AFT is a natural fit for us to show how well our products perform on the track. As Flat Track riders back in the 1960s, Ken and Norm saw a need to create a better filter, one that would provide protection, increased performance and longevity all at the same time. Almost 50 years later we continue to use the same proven technology that you can rely on in your day-to-day commute.” ■
S&S Cycle Increases Support for American Flat Track
F
ollowing a season of significant success, where support of the Indian Motorcycle Wrecking Crew helped garner a 1-2-3 season finish in AFT’s premier class in 2017, S&S Cycle has pledged additional backing to American Flat Track and its 2018 championship series.
The legendary V-Twin performance company celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2018. It has renewed its partnership with the Indian Wrecking Crew and reigning champion Jared Mees (who won the AFT season-opener at Daytona and round two in Atlanta on April 7) and will also back American Flat Track’s NBCSN weekend broadcasts. Additionally, S&S Cycle will offer a race and championship contingency bonus package of over $80,000 to qualifying racers who use S&S Cycle custom exhausts on their Indian Scout FTR750s, Harley-Davidson XG750Rs, or Kawasaki Ninja 650s.
NAMZ Custom Cycle Products
“Racing is the very heart and soul of the many accomplishments and innovative products S&S Cycle has delivered over the past 60 years,” said David Zemla, VP of marketing for S&S Cycle, Inc. “This passion for performance drives innovation from our designers and engineers, ensuring we deliver on our promise of Proven Performance.” ■

NEWS EVENTS Q&A With AFT Champion Jared Mees
D
Photos by Dave Hoenig
rag Specialties and Parts Unlimited recently announced they were backing American Flat Track Champion Jared Mees, a welcome addition to the companies’ long history of sponsoring top riders.
Mees is a five-time Grand National Champion, X-Games Gold Medalist, 2017 Cycle News rider of the Year, 2017 AFT Champion and a two-time Daytona TT winner. We had a chance to talk with Mees about the growing popularity of AFT, his ride with Indian and the future of the sport. Drag Specialties Magazine: You just won the Daytona TT for the second year in a row. What’s it like to win a national at a legendary place like Daytona? Jared Mees: Last year it was a lot of emotion with the TT being inside the speedway for the first time, the first win for Indian Motorcycle, so many firsts. Coming back knowing what to expect and still be the only guy on a flat track motorcycle to win inside the Daytona speedway is great.
AFT #1 Jared Mees kicked off the 2018 season with a win at the Daytona TT. He is seen here leading Brad Baker (6) and runner-up JD Beach.
I know that sounds greedy, but it’s a streak that would be great to keep alive. You’ve been an important part of AFT’s growing popularity. To what do you attribute the growth of Flat Track in America over the last few years?

This is something I would love to put my finger on; what is it exactly? I would say it is so many little things that are adding up. At American Flat Track headquarters they have a lot of heart and drive in there. The entire crew is very focused on details small and large. Lots of focus and it seems like they are learning from past mistakes. I also think the Road Racing stars like Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez who use flat track as training, and are excited about racing flat track like at the SuperPrestigo, generate more interest from fans. There’s guys like Troy Bayliss with the Troy Bayliss Classic, who has also brought focus in to the sport; even racers like Chad Reed and Ryan Villopoto have tried it. Social media is also helping our sport. With the stars in other motorsports (as mentioned above) tagging flat track and posting about their training is making fans wonder what is this sport? Where are the best races located? Where is it popular? Tell us about your ride with Indian and the success of the brand in AFT. You know it comes down to the work that was done with the Indian FTR was done properly. They spent a year in 2016 where we tested the bike the days after some Grand National races and were able to compare times to the current motorcycle I was riding, the XR750. This was able to tell us where we stood each test, and if we are close. If we were to go test just the FTR and nothing else, you could never know if those times were good or not. They listened to my feedback and we came back to the next test with [ideas on how] to move forward. They respected my feedback and took action on it, and together with the Indian engineers and S&S exhaust, we came up with a great platform. Those guys deserve all the credit. Tell us about your sponsorship from Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited.

So far it’s been great, and there is a lot of respect from them. I like when they call it “the family” because that’s just how it feels. I feel our relationship has grown strong so far. I can see this being a long-term partnership. The Drag Specialties and Parts After taking Indian Motorcycle to victory in 2017 in American Flat Track, Grand National Champion Jared Mees is defending his title in 2018 with the backing of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited.

Who are your toughest competitors? In a championship battle it has been Bryan Smith. Depending on what track we are racing it can be Henry Wiles on a TT, Bryan Smith on a mile or Brad Baker. The toughest competitor I have raced in my career is Kenny Coolbeth. Tell us about your journey in the sport. I started racing when I was 5 years old with my father. My father, who is also a motorcycle mechanic, took me through the early part of my career till I turned professional at 16. My dad and I raced our first professional season together with Pat Moroney on an 883 and we won the championship together our first year out. I then got a ride with Johnny and Sarah Goad on the XR750 and we went on for six years together winning nationals and rookie of the year. In 2009 I started racing for Rogers Racing and won my first championship that year with Craig Rogers and Brent Armbruster as the mechanic. I started working with Kenny Tolbert in 2013, and we have won three championships together and I still currently have Craig Rogers supporting me. I would say in high school being a wrestler helped me face challenges. Wrestling makes you rise up for a lot of things. That’s not an easy sport. Wrestling helped make me the champion I am today. That, and great bikes and mechanics. ■

KEEPING IT Nuanced nostalgia for a timeless Softail
S
oftail riders have it pretty good – their Harley-Davidsons of choice come in all the styles, a look to suit almost any rider’s taste. There’s everything from the no-nonsense stripped-down Slims and chunky cruisers like the Fat Boys, to musclebound bruisers like the Breakouts. And then there are those Heritage Classics, Harley-Davidsons with more than a passing nod to the past. With their spoked wheels, tank-mounted speedometers, detachable windshields and leather saddlebags, this Softail comes with a look way too cool to be consigned to the dustbin of history. More than just looking good, a modern-day Heritage Classic can play a lot of roles. Leave that windshield on and, along with the saddlebags, you’ve got a pretty useful back-to-basics touring machine there. Strip some of that off, and the same bike becomes a cruiser with a vibe as old-school as it gets. Cool stuff. Everything that makes the Heritage Classic great, gets that much better with help from the FatBook. This is exactly what Joe Houpt and the guys at Suburban Motors HarleyDavidson in Thiensville, WI had in mind when they got ahold of a 2017 model. With a keen eye for all the right details, and a careful selection of goodies out of that Drag Specialties catalog they took that bike and really kicked things up with that now-and-forever look. Right off the bat the most noticeable change is the exhaust. In place of the stock system there’s a true-dual Fishtail* system on display here. These extra-length Pythons are impossible to miss; Fishtail-tipped exhausts are a style going back to the earliest Harleys, and they’re a perfect addition to one of the newest.

KEEPING IT
While the *Python True Dual Fishtails might be the first change that grabs attention here, the details don’t stop with that exhaust. LA Choppers 13inch Treehugger handlebars with Drag Specialties Wide Blade levers and PYO Yafterburner grips are on the bike, as well.
This bike’s 103-inch Twin Cam got a little throwback styling of its own to go with its pipes. It came with a set of Covingtons Smooth Pan-Style Rocker Boxes, another nice touch. The bulky OE air filter was replaced with a more period-appropriate S&S Cycle assembly* and some new cam, points, derby and transmission covers finished off the update/backdate for the engine and driveline. Dunlop American Elite blackwalls are another immediatelynoticed change, a switch from the factory-supplied wide whites. While whitewalls have their place, the Dunlops Joe
and the guys chose here give this bike a more purposeful appearance, as do the new stainless-steel DP Brakes rotors fit to the stock laced wheels. There’s a new handlebar up top, too, a 13-inch Treehugger from LA Choppers. The bars were finished off with Drag Specialties Wide Blade levers, Yaffe Originals Yafterburner grips and a pair of Classic mirrors from Ken’s Factory. A Klock Werks 17-inch Tinted Flare windshield found its way into this mix, too, as did a Saddleman Explorer LS

THE HISTORY OF DRAG SPECIALTIES SEATS
N
obody planned for a company called Drag Specialties Seats to ever exist. That’s a fact. However, the company’s existence today is a classic example of how the American dream can actually come true. It’s a story of hard work and savvy marketing, mixed with a degree of financial risk taking and an incidental buy-out. The original seat company – E&S Seats – ultimately led to what we now know as Drag Specialties Seats, although that name didn’t become official until 2009. The story begins in the mid 1960s when two young entrepreneurs set out to create their own custom motorcycle seat company inside an old, vacant gasoline station in Minnesota. The initials from their respective last names were used to identify the company, and so was born E&S Seats. And, at this juncture, our story becomes a little cloudy because over the course of the past 50-something years nobody affiliated with Drag Specialties Seats seems to recall one of the two E&S co-founders. Dick Evans accounted for the “E” in the company’s name, but “Mr. S”

remains a mystery. (If anybody in the motorcycle industry can help fill in the “S” blank, by all means please let us know what you know.) At about the same time that E&S Seats was gaining a foothold in the custom motorcycle seat business, another enterprise in the Minneapolis metropolitan area was forming. That, of course, was Drag Specialties, a start-up distribution business by Tom Rudd who also had his sights set on broadening the company’s business scope to include manufacturing. One product that Rudd considered adding to Drag Specialties’ proprietary line was custom seats. The custom bike aftermarket, especially favoring chopper-style bikes, was growing at a rapid pace and by 1970 it was clear that motorcycle owners and enthusiasts of all brands were hungry for bolt-on custom parts for their bikes. The 1969 movie Easy Rider was a major factor in this aftermarket surge, and parts to transform an ordinary street bike, be it a Harley-Davidson, Japanese- or British-made bike, were in high demand. Among those parts were custom

Popular since the get-go, and they're both still available. The king-andqueen seat (left) was a popular seat for '70s chopper fans, while the Caballero (top) has a been a catalog mainstay for decades.
seats, in particular the two-up king-andqueen-style seats that emulated the towering black seat on Captain America’s Panhead chopper featured in the Easy Rider movie.
By the late 1970s riders were also looking for contoured, bucket-style, two-up touring seats for the Honda Gold Wing. Those seats helped nurture the touring bike aftermarket, and with it Drag Specialties’ fledging seat business thrived, although all seats continued to display the E&S Seats logo that could be found attached to each seat pan.
Stillwell noted, too, that the acquisition led to Drag Specialties becoming one of the largest custom-seat manufacturers in the industry. “You [as an individual customer] or a dealer can order a seat for a particular style bike in hundreds of different combinations,” wrote Stillwell. “This literally makes them one of the few companies that can still supply a customer with a true custom seat! In the peak season period, Drag Specialties will ship up to as many as 175 seats in one day.”
Customs seats have always been popular, whether they're for radical one-off builds, or touring riders looking for style and comfort.
A shop-tour magazine article in the August 1976 issue of Street Chopper gave an account of Drag Specialties’ rapid growth in the 1970s, too, paying particular attention to the seat business. “Drag had been in the seat business for quite some time but solely as a distributor,” wrote Street Chopper’s editor, Steve Stillwell. “Seats were a good selling product, and although they were being made locally for them, there remained the small problems which develop when one company is dealing with another. The solution was a simple one;

That seat shipment figure was just the tip of the iceberg. According to Street Chopper in 1975 Drag shipped 140,000 custom sissybars alone. The catalog included more than 2,500 items, with nearly 1,000 new part numbers set for the 1976 catalog. Two men designed most of those seats; former E&S Seats owner Dick Evans, who remained an employee of Drag Specialties, and Rich Foss. A typical seat used a sturdy all-aluminum pan for its base, and Drag Specialties began using pre-formed foam for padding. The pre-formed foam assured that individual seat models were dimensionally the same throughout, plus it allowed for a snug fit onto the seat pan. The fabric, either vinyl or 2½- or 3-ounce leather, was stitched on with heavy-duty Dacron thread. Options included chrome-plated or zinccoated hinges and latches, depending on the seat and motorcycle model. Top-grain California Saddle Leather was soon added as an option, and model names such as Solo Scorpion Stitch, Diamond Stitch, Gargoyle and Caballero filled the catalog’s pages. Marketing hype continued to play a major role in getting customers’ attention, and magazine ads often showcased colorful, stylish seats. Drag backed each seat with a 1-year

warranty, and to help underscore a seat’s exclusivity, all seats were marketed as “E&S Coach & Saddlery Extraordinaire. A Drag Specialties Company.” Magazine and catalog photos sometimes included some bizarre props, too, among them a cheetah posing with the seats, an obvious response to another major custom parts manufacturing company at the time, AEE Choppers, which frequently posed cougars with their products in photos and catalogs. About that same time a young man named Kevin Lehan joined Drag’s seat division as part of the assembly crew. “I worked my way up from there,” says Lehan, who today is Drag Specialties Seats’ general manager, but he didn’t get to that position without a little drama. It was in the 1980s that Drag Specialties began experiencing some financial trouble and Rudd put the distributing company up for sale. Of course, as we know today, in 1988 LeMans Corporation, founded and led by Fred Fox, stepped in to buy the troubled distribution company.

tooling for each pan in-house, so costs can be better controlled to offer more affordable seats. “And,” Lehan points out, “the OEMs use ABS for their pans, too!” As early as 1982 the company had introduced dual backrest seats for Honda Gold Wings, and in 2008 they brought that same concept to the burgeoning Harley touring market. Fans of the FLH and FLT Touring models were hungry for comfortable seats for their bikes. Soon, Drag Specialties introduced its exclusive Solar Reflective leather to the line. The heat-resistant seat fabric deflects the sun’s annoying heating rays, which helps to keep that saddle cooler to the touch.
Drag Specialties Seats general manager Kevin Lehan (left) has been with the company for decades. Here he talks seats with Brett Koranda (center) from J&P Cycles and Drag sales rep Lori Egge at the 2013 NVP Dealer Showcase. Kinney Jones photo
He opted not to absorb its many manufacturing companies that included a chrome-plating facility, an exhaust maker and others. However, Fox elected to retain the seat division, which by then had already lost Lehan, who left to become a private consultant to various small manufacturing companies in the area. Then, sometime in 1989, Lehan received a call from another former DS employee, Carl Beard, who had been contracted by LeMans to help reorganize Drag Specialties. “He [Beard] called me and said that he wanted me to meet Fred Fox,” Lehan recalls. The three men met and in no time everybody agreed that Lehan should return as the seat company’s general manager. In 1990 the manufacturing facility moved to its current location in Rogers, MN, and the focus turned to instituting new seat designs and implementing modern manufacturing techniques.
Indeed, it’s innovation using new and superior design and manufacturing techniques that has kept Drag Specialties Seats among the leaders in the seat aftermarket industry. Most recently DSS incorporated environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques to produce those classic seats. “We try to keep things as clean and lean as we can,” says Lehan. Even as the company continues to innovate and add new, unique models to its lineup, it also still offers original designs like the Caballero, that popular twoup King and Queen seat and Scorpion solo to name a few. So, about that name, Drag Specialties Seats. Well, it should be pointed out that the official, real deal name didn’t come into being until just a few years ago. Prior to that, Drag’s seat division technically had no official title. It was in 2009 that the name first started appearing in ads, and, a year later, the official Drag Specialties Seats moniker made its first appearance in the 2010 FatBook. It’s been that way ever since. ■
This is where the history of Drag Specialties custom seat business accelerates. Within a few years seat production included using stateof-the-art, pre-formed, multi-density foam on strong, lightweight ABS pans. Lehan stresses that ABS is lighter than metal, it won’t rust or corrode, and it’s easy to produce

he 2018 Harley-Davidson Softail lineup not only features the company’s latest power plant – the Milwaukee-Eight – it’s also full of enough different models to suit just about any rider’s taste. Bassani has new custom exhaust systems for three of the popular models in that range, the Heritage, the Deluxe and the Sport Glide. A custom/performance pipe swap is often topof-the list for a new bike owner and for those models Bassani has a couple 2-into-1 system now available. For the Heritage and the Deluxe, Bassani has a new dragstyle Staggered Dual setup. Both pipes are available in Chrome or Black finishes. For looks and performance, a 2-into-1 system is tough to beat and these newest Bassanis are a no-hassle direct fit on those Softails. Pure Bassani through and through, they feature 16-gauge steel construction. The per for mance -building stepped-design headpipes start at 1¾ inches, and open up to 17/8 inches and merge into an advance-design collector emptying into a long megaphone-style muffler. That muffler is finished off with a cool-looking detailed end cap, too. Unquestionably a major cosmetic upgrade, the 2-into-1 also provides a nice power boost. From the headpipes to the megaphone muffler, this system is designed for increased flow, improved performance overall and a really noticeable increase in low-end torque. It even features that signature Bassani deep and throaty tone. The new Staggered Duals feature that classic drag-pipe look, and have tough, long lasting 16-gauge steel

These pipes were also developed for increased flow and improved performance and there’s a nice kick in that lowend torque here, as well. The Staggered Duals sound off with their own brand of that deep and throaty tone, too. ■

here are some looks for motorcycles that never go out of style, and chrome laced wheels on a Harley is definitely one of them. The list of old school options from Drag Specialties is growing with the addition of replacement laced wheels for almost all late model applications.
Switching from the stock wheels to laced wheels does not get any easier than having direct replacement options. The 40-spoke tube type wheels have a classic look enhanced by chrome steel rims, chrome spokes and chrome steel hubs (unless otherwise noted for an application). Each wheel arrives fully assembled and trued with the bearings installed and the end play set. Drag’s replacement laced wheels come in sizes 16˝x3˝, 19˝x2.5˝, 21˝x2.15˝ and 17˝x4.5˝, with both ABS and non-ABS versions, where applicable. Some of the applications can also support both a single-disc and dual-disc brake setup. Since these laced wheels are designed as OEM replacements, that means the OEM hardware can be utilized for mounting. In addition, the wheels are designed to use OEM-style rotors, pulleys and sprockets to further ease the transition from the OEM wheel to the laced one.

21-inch front for Softail
The new replacement laced wheels join an extensive lineup of other Drag Specialties laced wheel options. Among the available laced wheel assemblies are 40-, 60- and 80-spoke styles. Chrome billet aluminum hubs, chrome-plated steel rims, polished stainless steel spokes and polished stainless steel nipples all add up to a timeless style. There are front and rear applications for most popular models, and the wheels are DOT approved. Drag’s laced wheel assemblies are made in the U.S.A. by RideWright wheels. For riders who want even more panache, Drag Specialties carries options like the 50-spoke softlip wheels and Fat Daddy 50-spoke radial laced wheels. The Fat Daddy wheel includes an option with black spokes for some color contrast, and there are sizes available for both stock and custom applications.

And for the real DIY types, Drag Specialties has all of the components necessary to build laced wheels. Custom rims of various sizes, pre-drilled lacing holes and finishes can be paired with spokes that include options in chrome, stainless steel and even twisted chrome for extra style points. Nipples, wheel bearing kits, hub assemblies and additional wheel parts can be found in both the FatBook and the OldBook. ■ 17-inch rear for Dyna

He says, “We feel very strongly there are two distinct customers looking for audio on their motorcycle: the guy who wants to spend money and get a big, high-powered system that sounds great, and then the everyday, average guy who just wants a very nice upgrade for a reasonable amount of money, and that’s who Hogtunes has always been, and will continue to be, for.” While the Hogtunes brand is more budget-minded than Wild Boar Audio, that does not mean there is any lack of technology or quality. The REV 225 amplifier, which makes 25W more than its REV 200 predecessor, features the same R.E.M.I.T. circuit configuration that is a hallmark of the latest Wild Boar amplifiers.
The new REV 225s come as standalone amplifiers or as part of complete kits with the speakers, model-specific mounting brackets and model-specific wiring already trimmed to the correct length. The applications for Street Glides and Road Glides include AA-designated amplifiers and kits for 1998-2013 models with Harley’s Advanced Audio Systems, as well as RM-designated amplifiers and kits for 2014 and newer Rushmore models. Like all Hogtunes products, the REV 225 is truly plugand-play, and there is no need for a dealer to reflash the radio once it is installed. Those properties make it easy for a rider to install the amp or the complete speaker kit on their own. As Pesdirz says, “If someone, whether it’s an end user or a dealer, cuts a wire, then he’s just made a mistake.” The REV 225 is also easy to build onto, with mounting plates available so riders can easily integrate a second amp and more speakers. No existing parts need to be replaced in order to expand the system. ■
»» Talk to your Drag Specialties rep about the new REV 225 amps and complete amp/speaker kits from Hogtunes. You can also visit www.hogtunes.com.
The REV 225 is the first Hogtunes product to have R.E.M.I.T., which is the company’s proprietary design for how the parts on the circuit board inside the amplifier are placed. EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) is a common trait among all Class D amplifiers, like the REV 225, and it results in FM signal interference. R.E.M.I.T. significantly reduces that interference to provide what Hogtunes feels is the best FM reception from any Class D motorcycle amplifier. The REV 225 installed with an accessory CB attached.

SPARK PLUG WIRES
Light the Fire
Upgrading Those Spark Plug Wires
ACCEL offers a full range of upgraded replacement spark plug wires for Harley-Davidsons. The lineup includes wires for Twin Cams, Sportsters and Milwaukee-Eight bikes.
S
park plug wires are a service item and don’t last forever. Granted, rare indeed is the plug wire that stops working altogether, but as time, heat, vibration and weather all take their toll, the resistance of that wire climbs higher thus delivering less energy to the spark plug. As a result, there are few better ways to perk up a motorcycle’s performance than to replace those OE spark plug wires. It’s inexpensive, it takes just minutes and the reward can be amazing. It’s also the perfect time for an upgrade, and for that there’s the full selection of Harley-Davidson spark plugs wires from ACCEL. Stepping up from OE makes a lot of sense here. The ACCEL replacements have actual wire at their core, a “spiral-core” design comprised of a very fine stainless steel wrapped around a strengthening core at the center.
The ideal spark plug wire resistance, determined by ACCEL engineers after exhaustive testing, is 500 Ohms per foot. As noted, it’s especially critical to fuel-injected/computercontrolled Twin Cams, Sportsters and Milwaukee-Eights, but it’s a level totally compatible with, and equally welcomed in, earlier carbureted applications.
All this is coated inside and out, and finished with a silicone outer layer so there are no electrical-noise properties to disrupt the function of anything on the motorcycle, including the audio system. These wires can reliably deliver up to five times more energy to the spark plugs and do it for considerably longer than the OE pieces.
Those correct-resistance, high-performing and long-lasting ACCEL wires, available in Black, Blue, Red and Yellow colors look good, too, blending right in with or accenting any engine’s appearance.
ACCEL’s engineering team put considerable development time into all of this, focusing especially on the resistance of these spiral-core wires. As it turns out the wrong levels of resistance, either too much or too little, can have serious performance issues, especially on fuel-injected/ computer-controlled Harleys.
44
When too much resistance is noted, the computer reads that as an engine on the verge of detonation so it retards timing. With too little resistance, the computer simply can’t process the information, sensing something wrong, but not sure what, before going into engine-protection mode that once again retards the timing. Either way, too much resistance or not enough, the result is sluggish performance, needlessly so.

en days just didn’t seem long enough. Bike Week 2018, the 77th Annual, was that big, and with everything packed into the schedule between\opening day and the final roll-up, anyone trying to do it all, well, just couldn’t. It was a nice problem to have, and for Bike Week 2018 there was some pretty spectacular weather for riding. It was motorcycling weather that was a welcome respite, no doubt, from the pretty dismal winter that was still raging

Naturally, a Main Street cruise or two was on everyone’s list no matter what. Main Street’s a must-do, always has been, and anyone with a mind to could easily make it an all-day or all-night affair.

With pretty much non-stop music going on day and night at The Bank & Blues Club, Dirty Harry’s Indoor & Outdoor Stages and the Full Moon Saloon – and that’s just listing the places on a single block or so of Main Street – there were ample diversions for anyone wanting a break from the chrome and loud pipes. Hey, even riders with 50-weight in their veins need a break now and then and Main Street could provide it. Bike Week 2018 also had plenty of bike shows on the menu. Riders on the lookout for custom rides ranging from the wild
and wicked to the old-school cool to the just plain bizarre, could find that just about everywhere and every day. There were the annual biggies like the Rat’s Hole Show and Bikes On The Boardwalk, and there was a seemingly non-stop parade of shows going on behind that new Indian dealership on Beach Street. There were even specialty shows staged at some of the more-popular watering holes and, of course, there was what’s almost become an industry must-attend, the show at Willie’s Tropical Tattoos on U.S 1 in Ormond Beach.

New Gaskets for the Milwaukee-Eight
M
ilwaukee-Eight big-bore kits and big-lift cams are increasingly popular and Cometic Gasket has all the special-design gaskets to put these hot-rodded Harley-Davidsons back together the right way, and these gaskets are indeed “special design.” Working with a Milwaukee-Eight requires choosing the right gaskets for the application, which can get a little tricky.
For starters, there are two cylinder-head designs used on the Milwaukee-Eight engines. Cometic has gaskets for them both, and it’s critical that the right gaskets be used in each application. One version of the Milwaukee-Eight features oil-cooled heads. A second version of that multi-valve engine (the one found in bikes with lower fairings and radiators) has provisions for coolant to flow through the heads. The oil-cooled heads require gaskets with one tear-drop shaped port close to the bore and surrounded with an embossed surface. The second Milwaukee-Eight head design (the one used on bikes with radiators and coolant) needs gaskets with two round coolant ports set significantly further back from the bore than the oil-cooling port. With the oil-cooled heads, a Milwaukee-Eight big-bore is limited to 4.200-inches with no modifications to the heads (stock is 3.937-in. for the 107, 4.00 for the 114). Anything larger than that 4.200-in. bore would require the oil-ports to be welded shut and the head resurfaced.

Now, here’s where things get a little tricky. Cometic’s gaskets for these oil-cooled heads will work on both oil cooled and coolant-cooled heads, and they’re available in stock sizes and big-bore sizes up to a 4.200-inch bore. Cometic’s second Milwaukee-Eight head-gasket design, the one designed specifically for cylinder heads with coolant flowing through them, can safely be used in big-bore applications all the way up to a 4.500-inch bore diameter with no coolant-port modifications required.
Working with a Milwaukee-Eight requires choosing the right gaskets for the application. Cometic has gaskets for the two cylinder-head designs used by Harley-Davidson.
They’re available for a 4.250-inch bore, for 4.320-inch bores and for that 4.500-inch setup. New-design MilwaukeeEight base gaskets are available for all of this, as well, for both the oil- and coolant-cooled applications. Cometic also has the full gasket kit required if a cam swap is part of that Milwaukee-Eight big-bore job. Part of the FatBook since 1991, Cometic gaskets are USA manufactured from a comprehensive range of materials suitable for the situation, whether it’s a gasket calling for advanced technologies like an MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) construction, a synthetic blend such as Aramid Fiber, or Cometic’s own proprietary AFM (Aluminum Foamette Material), gaskets featuring an aluminum core with synthetic rubber bonded to the outside, an ideal solution where the mating surfaces might not be pristine. ■

Spring Into Action Optimizing a MilwaukeeEight Cam Swap
When it comes to rebuilding the drivetrain on a Milwaukee-Eight engine, the parts list can begin and end with Feuling Parts. The company’s parts lineup has everything covered.
W
ith a Milwaukee-Eight cam swap there’s only one camshaft involved, cutting that cost down considerably. But doing the job right requires a parts list just a little bit longer than that one camshaft and a handful of gaskets.
“One thing we’ve learned from our history with four-valve heads,” says Luke Leatherman at Feuling Parts (Feuling offered a four-valve option years ago), “is that the correct valve springs are of paramount importance. Especially critical is their pressure on the rocker arms.” See where this is heading? A Milwaukee-Eight cam swap, done right, will include new valve springs as well as that *cam, and Feuling has both. Ideally they should be valve springs with a progressive rate, but without so much pressure they twist that extra-long rocker arm, even slightly. The result of excessive pressure can be a nasty case of valvetrain harmonics starting at the valves and springs and working right down to the lifters. Feuling’s custom-design Milwaukee-Eight Beehive springs address that problem head-on. While slightly increasing seated pressure for optimum sealing, they reduce pressure when the valve is at maximum lift. Benefits? Feuling has found that a valvetrain not plagued with those powerrobbing harmonics, and the right valve springs, actually increases horsepower and torque. They’ll add to a quieter engine, too. Now relieved of harmonic effects, the lifters are able to completely fill while on the down-side of the cam lobe. How many times have you heard complaints about noisy lifters? How often have you looked at the valve springs as the cause? The parts list for that Milwaukee-Eight cam swap isn’t quite done. A stand-alone set of Viton valve seals is a smart move here. Replacing the factory bolts that locate the rocker arms with Feuling’s stud arrangement is also recommended, as is replacing all the cylinder studs. The factory’s stretch-to-yield studs are good for one-time use only, Feuling warns. Reusing them is an invitation to head-gasket failure. “With those heads off you’d be well advised to take a good look at that factory valve job,” Leatherman adds. “It would be time well spent.” ■

B
ack in the late 1980s, highquality aftermarket parts for Harley-Davidsons were hard to find in Germany. Werner Müller took it upon himself to do something about it, using his skills to design and manufacture triple clamps. Those first parts eventually became the foundation of Müller Motorcycles AG. Today, the company has been in business for 30 years and is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its revolutionary Power Clutch. Müller has built a worldwide reputation as a producer of quality motorcycle parts, and the Power Clutch is now being carried by Drag Specialties. Müller’s designs are recognized for their ingenuity and efficiency, and they have earned an impressive list of awards, patents and applications for utility models throughout the years.
According to Müller, installing the Power Clutch is a quick and easy step to an easier clutch pull — a 40 percent reduction in the required effort.
All Müller Motorcycle products are developed, manufactured and assembled in Müller’s own production facilities or by regional companies in close vicinity. By working with regional suppliers, the company can ensure rigorous quality standards as well as fast service. Each Müller part is designed with a Solid Works CAD program, and the initial prototypes are manufactured on modern CNC machines. Extensive load and drive tests are then conducted before moving forward. The next step for a new part is to get TÜV certification, which means it has been tested by the third-party Technischer Überwachungsverein (Technical Inspection Association) in Germany to undergo stress and load testing as well as other tests to ensure it meets highquality manufacturing standards. The Müller Power Clutch available from Drag Specialties is made to give a rider’s hands a rest. By replacing the OEM inner and outer ramp assemblies, the Power Clutch makes it 40 percent easier to pull the clutch lever on most models. The new 2018 models have a 45 percent reduction in lever force. Installation is easy – no drilling or spacers are
required, and it utilizes the existing pivot balls for most applications. Once installed, the Power Clutch is invisible, and what can’t be seen is the how the device changes the geometry of the ball slots in the clutch segment. Combined with the longer lever axle, the clutch becomes instantly easier to operate. The Power Clutch has been a huge success for Müller, with more than 100,000 customers worldwide, and the company calls the product one of the most significant developments in its history. The Power Clutch fits Big Twin Evo and Twin Cam models from 1987 and up, XLH and Buells from 1984–1993, XLH and Buells from 1994 and up, as well as all new 2018 models. The Power Clutch also comes with a lifelong warranty. It is also available for Baker right-side drive transmissions with a mechanical clutch. Check both the FatBook and the OldBook for applications. ■

o many Harley-Davidson techs and customers, Motion Pro is the company with the tools, cables and controls that are in demand.
Motion Pro actually got its start with HarleyDavidson motorcycles. The first products introduced in 1984, the start of what’s become a giant Motion Pro catalog, included cables for Harley-Davidsons, replacement/ performance cables for AMA flat-trackers. That Harley-Davidson connection hasn’t waned any over the years, either. Motion Pro has supported HarleyDavidson riders in the American Flat Track series every year since and is the current Official Cables, Controls & Tools Sponsor for the 2018 season. Motion Pro has all manner of tools, equipment and shop accessories aimed right at anyone working on a HarleyDavidson, all of it pro-quality and priced just right. No group of riders are more wrench-happy than your Harley customers so make sure they see all this. Motion Pro even makes that easy with a neat and effective Slat Wall Display that puts those Harley-Davidson tools right out where your customers can easily find them.

Custom Front Fenders
A
big front wheel, whether it’s a 21, a 23, a 26 or a 30 is the hot ticket for any custom FL-model Harley-Davidson or Harley-Davidson Trike. Those new wheels need fenders to match and, with a whole selection of brand-new styles and sizes, Russ Wernimont Designs has that covered. The RWD big-wheel front fenders are available in a half-dozen different looks and styles, and they’re all heavy-gauge steel construction ready for paint and predrilled for an easy installation. For all the bigger sizes (fenders for those 23-inch, 26-inch, and 30-inch wheels) the sides are dimpled and reinforced for added strength and rigidity.

Drag Specialties is now carrying a wide range of Russ Wernimont Designs’ custom front fenders for big-wheel Harley-Davidsons.
All this is available now and your rep can tell you all about it. So can the FatBook and OldBook Midyear Editions. In the meantime take a look here, there’s plenty to see. The new RWD fenders are offered in two family-styles, Custom Dresser Front Fenders and Flat-Back Dresser Front Fenders, and within each style-family, there are variations offered for different overall looks. There are fenders with and without side valances. There are fenders designed to work with different rake angles, everything from 30 degrees up to 47 degrees. There are even choices of width and length. The applications cover FLHT, FLHX, FLHR, FLTRX bikes and the FL-model Trikes from 1994 right up to the newest 2018s. In the Custom Dresser family there are LS-2 styles following that curvature with a straight-cut lower edge, as well as LS-3 styles with a straight-cut upper portion for a more stock look up top combined with a straight-cut lower edge. There are OCF style fenders following the curvature of the wheel/tire and ending with a curved lower edge. All include choices of overall width and length. That other style family, the RWD Flat-Back Fenders, as the name implies, all have a custom style that dives straight down along the backside of the wheel, and ends with a skirted trailing edge. Here, too, there are options offered as to the size and shape of the fender crowns, the shape and size of sides and the valances, and plenty of choices as to width, length and rake, too. All the fenders are handmade in the USA, every one individually inspected to ensure straightness, consistency and a flawless finish ready for paint with minimal bodywork. hoosing the right grips for a motorcycle can not only make riding more comfortable, but can improve the looks of the bike, too. Avon Grips has a whole lineup that will really help your customers make that connection. Avon Grips’ range includes everything from old-school rubber grips with that classic “Coke bottle” shape to grips with custom-design billet end caps and collars in chrome or anodized finishes. There are gel grips, air-cushion grips, Velvet Air grips, custom contours, the new Memory Foam and more. There are even grips with built-in throttle assist and undercut area for your fingers to fit into. Avon offers grips in small, medium and large size diameters. The grips are available in push-pull or fly-by-wire applications. Memory Foam grips are a best seller in the lineup. Made with Ethylene-Vinal Acetate (EVA), the same material found on the soles of most sneakers, they’re super comfortable with a cool, non-abrasive feel.
Velvet Air Grips
Memory Foam grips
Although this is the softest, most compliant material molded by Avon, it’s also the most durable and chemical resistant. Memory Foam grips are available in those three different diameters, too, and are offered with triple-chrome plated aluminum ends and collars. They are available in several radical designs. Those Avon Air Cushion grips feature soft knurl-textured rubber with air pockets inside that reduce vibrations and hand tingle. The Velvet Air grips have air pockets under an incredibly soft, vibration-dampening surface. ■

A Seat Made for Shredding
T
he world is your playground…shred it! Any adventurous Harley-Davidson rider looking for a freestyle saddle can check out the new KickFlip seat from LePera Motorcycle Seats.
From the styling to the materials, the KickFlip is made with excitement in mind. The maximized back support and ample seating area offer plenty of options for riding—or showing off—at a moment’s notice. The KickFlip comes in four options for the black finish: Basket Weave, Diamond, Pleated or Pleated “Gripp Tape.” That last option is especially great for riders who need extra traction when the occasion calls for it. The extended back support and 11½-inch seating offers plenty of space for an easy, comfortable ride when a rider is more interested in getting somewhere than showing off. LePera’s Marathon Foam adds to the bragging rights of the KickFlip, providing maximum stability and comfort. Underneath the Marathon Foam is LePera’s handcrafted

steel seat base, a tradition that dates back to LePera’s founding in 1972. The powder coated steel base is carpeted on the bottom to provide a friction-free surface between the seat and the fender. The KickFlip fits a range of Harley-Davidson models and is made in the U.S.A. Applications include the 2006-17 Dyna, 1982-1994 FXR, 2004-06 and 2010-18 XL, and 200818 Baggers. The FXR application is only compatible with the stock hinge and latch. ■

Black Edition Pistons for the Milwaukee-Eight
Wiseco now has oversize Milwaukee-Eight applications for its unique Black Edition pistons. The special coatings for the pistons – ArmorX and ArmorFit – protect against wear, and helps reduce friction.
H
arley-Davidson’s introduction of the MilwaukeeEight engine platform was an exciting moment for V-twin fans.
This new engine platform was designed to improve power and torque, while incorporating modern necessities, such as emissions compliance, fuel-efficiency, and reliability. The end result was improvements in such as cooling ability and alternator function, as well as a smoother, more comfortable ride feeling. Wiseco’s Black Edition pistons bring the complete package to your Milwaukee-Eight customers – more power with improved reliability.
Wiseco Black Edition pistons achieve a higher, 11:1 compression ratio. This compression ratio is available across 4 different bore sizes, creating final displacement options of 107ci, 114ci, 117ci, and 124ci. Any one of these displacement options can be achieved using stock cylinders (boring/ sleeving required), and without touching the bottom end. Increased power is short-lived without reliability, which is why Wiseco created two new proprietary coatings for Black Edition pistons – ArmorX and ArmorFit. ArmorX coating is the black coating on the crown and ring grooves. It comes from a proprietary electrochemical process, and creates a barrier on the piston that resists wear from combustion. The Wiseco-patented ArmorFit on the piston skirts is a moly-based dry film that allows the piston to self-adjust to the size of the cylinder (assuming the cylinder is within proper size range). ArmorFit remains for the life of the piston, reducing friction and quieting engine operation. ■

LED Marker Lights

hey’re petite, but popular. Among the hottest sellers at Ken’s Factory are Neo Fusion marker lights, available in four different finish options through Drag Specialties.
The Neo Fusion marker lights are small, but carry a big punch. Super stylish, the lights feature a bright 16-LED cluster that provides brilliant illumination.
The marker lights reflect the quality and fine details that Ken’s Factory strives for in all of its parts, and there is a lot of detail packed into the diminutive lights. The Neo Fusion marker lights have a machined aluminum housing with a 1-inch face. Inside, a 16-LED cluster provides brilliant illumination. The marker lights are sold individually, and they are designed to be a versatile part. The lights use a standard three-wire system, and they are small enough to mount just about anywhere, so they can be used as a turn signal or taillight. The Neo Fusion housing can accept
a Ken’s Factory replacement red LED cluster for an easy taillight/brake light combo. The marker lights are available in black with a black ring, black with a brass ring, polished with a polished ring and polished with a brass ring. On the black ring, the machined dimples around the face of the light are left in their raw aluminum state to add a contrast look. While the marker lights can be added on their own, they are right at home with the rest of the Neo Fusion line from Ken’s Factory. In the lighting category, that includes the Neo Fusion headlights in 4½-inch and 5¾-inch sizes, and matching taillights. ■

arley-Davidson’s 2018 Softail lineup is impressive. The umpteen-thousand riders on older Softails, however, are still focused on improvements and upgrades for the Harleys they already have.
Switching to a belt-drive primary is a popular way to upgrade and customize an older model, and BDL has a big range of those primaries for 1990 through 2006 Softails. There are easily installed enclosed systems for a serious clutch-and-belt primary upgrade. There are also opendrives kits putting that upgrade out there for all to see. Either way, open or enclosed, with BDL everything is included, everything is high quality, and the look and performance are impressive.
Enclosed systems? BDL’s feature Kevlar clutch plates in a custom basket with 12 replaceable dogs for constant contact. The adjustable pressure plates are polished, use nine shoulder bolts and springs, and there’s a sealed innerprimary bearing. And, of course, there’s the belt and its precision-machined pulleys, all designed to slip in behind an OEM cover. In the open-drive lineup there are kits with 2-inch belts, 3-inch belts, and there are monster Top Fuel Street Systems. There are kits using BDL’s Competitor Clutch, others with BDL’s Ball Bearing Lock-Up Clutch. BDL also has kits that include outboard bearing supports, and kits that relocate the oil filter behind the belt drive. The kits come with a broad selection of guard designs that come in Polished, Black Anodize or Clear Anodize finishes. ■

The Stylish HighTail Fastback
M
ustang has offered a variety of seats for more than 35 years, and now the brand has a number of new designs that many customers might not associate with its well-known aesthetic. These new designs play off the current new model lineup, evolving styles and growing industry influences. The first new model to reflect these changes is the HighTail Fastback. The HighTail places riders in a comfortable, but aggressive riding position. Available for 2008-later Harley-Davidson FL Touring models, this updated version of Mustang’s original Fastback positions the rider slightly lower and 1 inch further back than its predecessor. A bucketed 13½-inch wide driver seat meets a raised, arching tail section that delivers a look symbolic of the seat’s ’60s-era muscle car namesake. A 6-inch rise provides ideal cruising posture and excellent lumbar support.
The HighTail Fastback from Mustang combines a streamlined look borrowed from ’60s-era muscle car styling, and all-day riding comfort.
The HighTail’s precision-cut cover is hand-sewn from high quality vinyl that has the appearance of leather, but the durability to withstand harsh elements. Detailed stitching and a blend of smooth vinyl panels with perforated vinyl inlays create a subtle contrasting effect. A marine-grade fiberglass baseplate is the foundation for the heart of every Mustang seat — a proprietary controlled density polyurethane foam that delivers allday comfort for rider and passenger. Mustang’s foam requires no break-in period, and is known for retaining its shape and support even after years of use. ■
