The annual gathering of Drag Specialties vendors, reps and dealers in Madison is just around the corner on August 25 & 26th. What makes the NVP so important is its not just the most important business event of 2018 for V-twin retailers, its really the first event of 2019. Yes, this is the show where the wraps come off of next year’s new products and new applications for all of the leading brands. As of press time, there were more than 170 vendors signed up to display their latest wares and bring important information for anyone who sells their products.

One must-do event at the NVP Product Expo is the Meet & Greet, an outdoor reception that features cool bikes, food and refreshments. Of course the whole idea is to see industry friends and make new ones.

To make your time at the show as productive as possible, in this issue we feature an NVP Product Expo Preview starting on page 70. NEWS EVENTS Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame HONORING THE CLASS OF 2018

L

eMans Corporation founder and chairman Fred Fox will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame Class of 2018.

Additionally, a host of industry notables are being welcomed into the Museum’s hallowed halls. This year’s inductees includes moto-journalist and Drag Specialties Magazine contributor, Marilyn Stemp; sculptor and historian, Jeff Decker; hometown hero and longtime rally backer, Jack Hoel; custom builder Armondo “Mondo” Porras; land-speed record holder Valerie Thompson; and the legendary collection of motorcycle builders and personalities, the Hamsters USA.

Marilyn Stemp — Together with her late husband Dennis, Marilyn Stemp started IronWorks Magazine in 1989. The publication combined his Marilyn Stemp artistic creativity and passion for motorcycles with her experience as a journalist, organizational skills and attraction to mechanical pursuits.

Kirk “Hardtail” Willard will be receiving the Hall of Fame’s 2018 Freedom Fighter Award for his lifelong crusade for biker’s rights.

Stemp continues the work that she and Dennis began, and also works for other motorcycle related businesses, events and charitable organizations.

They will be honored at the museums annual induction breakfast during the Sturgis Rally on Aug. 8th at the Lodge at Deadwood in Deadwood, SD. For more information go to www.sturgismuseum/hall-of-fame-banquet-tickets or by calling 605-347-2001.

Jeff Decker — Sculptor and historian Jeff Decker is known for immortalizing motorcycling in bronze. Perhaps the most notable of his sculptures is “By The Horns” – a 16-foot-tall, 5,000-pound bronze located on the grounds of the HarleyDavidson Museum.

The Class of 2018

Jack Hoel — Hometown resident Jack Hoel has been a major influence in the development of the Rally, while also having a distinguished career in the world of motorcycling. Hoel also worked as manager of the Yamaha Race Team in the 1970s, and as Yamaha’s head of new product development, where he and his team later created the iconic DT-1. He was also instrumental in the development of the XS 650.

Fred Fox — Lifetime Achievement Award: Fred Fox founded Parts Unlimited in Edgerton, WI in 1967 and through sheer determination, hard work, long hours and a vision of what was possible, built the world’s largest aftermarket distribution company. He acquired Drag Specialties in 1988 and built it into a V-twin industry powerhouse. Fox was first inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame in 2002, and is also in the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Armondo “Mondo” Porras — Mondo Porras has been defining the “look” of motorcycles since 1967. Together with custom builder and founder of Denver’s Choppers Denver Mullins, Mondo created some of the first aftermarket parts for the growing chopper industry. Denver’s Choppers’ globally influential extended springer front ends and custom frames were instrumental in establishing the “long-bike” aesthetic that is synonymous with choppers. Valerie Thompson — America’s Queen of Speed, Valerie Thompson has set 7 land speed records and has exceeded speeds in excess 200 mph on two wheels at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Her drag racing career spans a decade. Thompson also donates time supporting charitable organizations and inspiring children overcoming personal challenges. In 2011 she was awarded the “American Women Riders Community Hero Award” in 2011.

Chasing the Championship MEES, INDIAN DOMINATING 2018 AFT SEASON

A

t just a little over half way through the 2018 American Flat Track season, Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees is like a machine as he hammers away at what could be another championship title.

As of press time, the defending Grand National Champion had a commanding lead in the standings with 195 points, a nice and healthy distance from second place Henry Wiles – a privateer rider also on an Indian Scout FTR750 – who had thus far picked up 136 points. Mees’ Indian Wrecking Crew teammates, Brad Baker and Bryan Smith, were at third and sixth, respectively, in the standings at press time. As if that points lead wasn’t impressive enough, Mees earned it with seven wins and a second place podium. With races like that, he’s racked up 37 career victories, which puts him equal with Kenny Coolbeth Jr. for fifth all-time. Incidentally, Coolbeth Jr. is on the No. 2 Nila Racing/Colombia Avionics Indian FTR750. In fact, not only is Indian in the first eight positions of the top 10 in the points standing, the OEM also swept the top eight at the last race run before this issue went to press, the OKC Mile in Oklahoma City, OK. Stay tuned as Mees and the Indian Wrecking Crew throttle it through the rest of the season. ■

Sleek to start with, this RoadGlide still looks plenty slick thanks to a lineup of stylish bolton parts and the FatBook.

Word on the street though, is that the Street Glide is the one in the popularity lead, and has been for a while. But for plenty of riders who want their long-haul touring machine to still profile in style the Road Glide is the bike of choice. And, since the 2017 addition of MilwaukeeEight power and some other mechanical upgrades, lovers of the sleek-looking Road Glide have even more to like. However, no matter how good a bike might be rolling off the assembly line, most riders want to make them better. That’s where Joe Houpt, the team at Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson and the FatBook come in. To prove the validity of that premise, and give riders an eyeful of what’s possible with a Road Glide, a little effort and some help from those Drag Specialties vendors, they rolled a box-stock FLTRX off the floor of their Thiensville, WI facility and got to work.

As is so often the case the new stance and overall vibe began with new wheels and tires and for this build, they went with the affordably cool Coastal Moto Atlantics, 21inch front and 18-inch rear cast wheels. Each tire is shod with a Harley favorite, the Michelin Commander IIs. A pair of Arlen Ness fender relocation brackets made room for this on the front end, and Ness Hot Legs fork lowers and Deep Cut boot covers added more style. Drag Specialties drilled stainless-steel rotors became part of the picture, too.

S

treet Glide or Road Glide? Fork-mounted or frame-mounted fairing? Which one is the hot ticket with today’s riders? That debate will probably rage on for as long as HarleyDavidson offers both versions of these wind-cheating, saddlebag-toting motorcycles.

Moving up from there, Houpt and his crew replaced the OE windshield with a 6-inch Dark Smoke Flare by Klock Werks, and added one of their fairing vent screens. That trick 10-inch handlebar riser with gauge mount setup from MJK Performance put the controls and clocks right in reach. They also added Vanquish mirrors from Ken’s Factory and Eddie Trotta’s Dead End grips to the cockpit.

2017 FLTRX ROAD GLIDE

The results are nothing less than stunning. This bike features custom style from tip to tail and, just as importantly, all of it enhances the inherent good looks of the Road Glide. The worked over 2017 model is still the no-fuss, long-haul touring machine it always was, but its head-turning profile quotient took a major jump.

The OE seating was swapped out with something decidedly more stylish, a Drag Specialties Caballero Faux Suede seat with a diamond-stitch pattern. Another easy

FatBook change? The addition of Carl Brouhard Spiro Series floorboards for the rider and passenger. Good looking as all this is, the team in Thiensville didn’t solely concentrate the effort on improved cosmetics and upgraded function- this Bagger has to perform. There’s a tight-grip Scorpion Lock-Up Clutch here, a goodlooking Barnett assembly put in plain view with a Scorpion Series clear derby cover. The Road Glide got a suspension upgrade with AIR-A shocks from Legend Suspensions. The makeover opened up the bike’s Milwaukee-Eight breathing with a Ness Deep Cut Inverted Series air-cleaner assembly1 on the intake, a full S&S Cycle El Dorado True Dual system2 with Thruster Tips on the exhaust.

There’s more, all listed in the accompanying Build Sheet, so have a look. Spend some time with these pictures and, if it comes your way, with the bike in person when it goes out on tour with the Drag Specialties Event Display. Make sure your Road Glide customers have a good look, too. After all, they chose the Road Glide for its looks and ride. This one dramatically ups the ante on both of those counts, all done with bolt-ons from the FatBook. ■

Products for Extra Pep and Power

Hi-Output slip-ons for the 2018 Softail Fat Bob

K

eeping inventory moving is important. To help on that end of things, Vance & Hines has a suggested list of some of the company’s hottest movers for the current year, products popular among your Harley-Davidson riding customers. The range covers a number of motorcycle models. The list features products for a 1, 2, 3 approach to more power. It includes slip-on mufflers for the 2018 Softails, a couple full-system Sportster exhausts, some model-specific air-intake assemblies and the tuning devices needed to re-map the EFI and get the most out of that increased intake and exhaust flow. Let’s start with the Hi-Output slip-ons for the 2018 Softail Fat Bob. It’s no surprise that these slip-ons are popular. The latest version of the Fat Bob comes with OE mufflers that many riders are replacing right off the bat. With the Hi-Output slip-ons, they get the hot rod performance, stylish look and throaty exhaust note that the Milwaukee-Eight Fat Bobs need.

Mini-Grenades system for Sportsters

Stepped, stacked and staggered, these blacked-out slip-ons are a great match for the radically styled Fat Bob. The mufflers feature laser-engraved badges featuring that well-known Vance & Hines logo, and there is an optional quiet baffle for your customers who want to tone down that distinctive rumble. The Vance & Hines Eliminator 300 slip-ons are also popular on those 2018 Softails, the Street Bob, Low Rider, Slim, Fat Boy and Breakout. Inspired by the Vance & Hines flat track racer exhausts, the Eliminator 300s are tight-and-tidy 3-inch round mufflers crafted with precision-machined billet end caps.

Eliminator 300 slip-ons

Fine-tuned with glass-wrapped acoustic baffles, there’s a nice resonant tone to go with the added performance that Vance & Hines is known for. Optional quiet inserts are available. Harley-Davidson is using a new wrinkle-black head pipe for some of the Milwaukee-Eight Softails and the Vance & Hines Eliminator 300s in black have a matched wrinkle-black finish. Certain other 2018 Softails have factory head pipes with a satin-chrome finish. The Eliminator 300s in satin chrome are a match here. there is also a bright chrome finish, a look that’s never out of style. With the growing popularity of the Sportster lineup, Vance & Hines says that its 2-into-2 Mini-Grenades systems are big sellers for the XL audience. Available for Sportsters from the 2004 models and newer, the Mini-Grenades pack a big punch. Their staggered three-step design and race-inspired CNC machined billet end caps lend a muscular, compact stance and an aggressively deep tone to a Sportster. The bungs on these will accept both 12mm and 18mm O2 sensors. The Mini-Grenades are available in chrome or black. Going hand-in-hand with all these free flowing exhausts are Vance & Hines high-flow air intakes, a setup that will really let those Harleys breathe. The VO2 Rogue air intakes have applications for Sportsters, Softails, Dynas and Touring models, and in all those applications there are choices of a chrome or black finish. Featuring a sleek CNC machined billet cover secured by race-spec ARP bolts, the VO2 Rogue has a high-capacity, deep-pleated and washable air filter featuring the K&N Xstream filter top that was originally developed for racing. According to Vance & Hines, the uniquely styled VO2 Rogue produces the strongest power increase possible with a filter, a perfect match for full systems or slip-ons. With new exhausts in place, and new air intakes installed, your customers can now move on to fine-tuning all that new, added horsepower and torque. In fact, Vance & Hines has hot-selling tuning devices that will let them customize their motorcycles’ whole fuel management systems.

The Fuelpak FP3 is operated via a smartphone.

The Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3 allows riders to customtailor mapping on any Delphi equipped Harley-Davidson. There are LED and LCD models and they’re all plug-andplay for easy installation. Once it’s set up, all your customer needs is their smartphone to start that precision tuning. The Autotune feature uses all factory sensors to add another layer of customization. With the Fuelpak FP3, live sensor data can be viewed through a smartphone to display speed, rpm, cylinder head temperature, voltage, gear selection, and more. Vance & Hines has more than10,000 custom maps available for a variety of exhaust and air intake setups. Vance & Hines hardly needs an introduction. Riders know the name and what it promises. With this list, you and your customers are sure to find a setup that will let them enjoy the newly awakened power of their Harley-Davidson. ■

AUDIO PRODUCTS

Now Hear This

Fairing Sound Control for Better Listening Klock Werks teamed up with Dynamat, an acoustic control company, to produce easy peel-and-stick kits for baggers. The Klock Werks mats, all made in the USA, are custom cut to four sizes, fitting 2014-2018 FLHT/FLHX fairings, 19992013 FLHT/FLHX fairings, 2015-2018 FLTRX/FLTRU fairings and 1999-2013 FLTR fairings. Because they are custom cut for the style of fairing, that means there is no waste and, most importantly, no guesswork. Simply peel the backing away from the sticky side of the mat, and then put it in place.

Klock Werks Dynamat sound control fairing kits come custom cut for a variety of fairings, making for a hassle-free installation.

W

alk into any music studio and you’ll find foam-covered walls that make the sound in the room seem crisp and clear. By absorbing unwanted noise, the foam allows the sounds you want to hear – usually music or a voice – to be singled out. Fairing sound control mats and pads utilize the same concept. Sure, a Harley-Davidson engine sounds great, but the engine and the rattling from road vibrations can really drown out the bike’s audio. Whether a customer has a stock audio system or an aftermarket one, they still want to hear their music the way it was meant to be heard, clearly and without a lot of background noise.

The J&M Corporation fairing/speaker acoustic pad kits are also a great solution for improving the overall sound quality of fairing-mounted speakers. The acoustic foam pads have adhesive already installed on one side, and the die-cut designs ensure a perfect fit. J&M offers two size options, including one for 1999-2013 FLHT fairings and another for 1999-2013 FLTR fairings. Like the Klock Werks kit, the J&M acoustic pads simply stick on for a quick and easy application that results in vastly improved audio. ■

»» Talk to your Drag Specialties rep about the benefits of fairing sound control mats and pads. Learn more about Klock Werks at www.getklocked.com and J&M at http://jmcorp.com.z

Sound control kits mount easily inside the fairing, are invisible once the fairing is remounted and they produce a big result in audio clarity. Not only do sound control kits reduce unwanted noise, they also help prevent fairing vibration, too. The combined result is less noise, dampening for the audio system, reduced distortion and a better listening experience. Echoes from the fairing are cut out, too. Once the sound control kit is in place and the fairing is reinstalled, nothing looks any different, but it does sound different. The audio system’s bass and mid-range sounds are both improved for a better listening experience. Drag Specialties carries two audio fairing mat options, including the Klock Werks Dynamat sound control fairing kits and the J&M Corporation fairing/speaker acoustic pad kits.

New Exhausts for Milwaukee-8 Touring Models

EXHAUSTS

Always on Tour

Khrome Werks’ new slip-on mufflers for Miwaukee-8 Touring applications.

T

he latest full exhaust systems and slip-ons from Khrome Werks are all about touring, with two variations of a 2-into-1 exhaust and three slip-on designs for 2017 and up Milwaukee-8 Touring applications.

This new 2-into-1 system is designed to increase horsepower and torque while providing a big dose of style and an aggressive lowfrequency sound level.

The 2-into-1 exhaust is a three-step system with a 4½inch muffler body. The system is available with either a billet muffler tip or a slash-cut tip. The sleek design is comprised of 16-gauge steel 1¾-inch, 17/8-inch and 2-inch three-step primaries with a 2½-inch collector. The spherical port caps ensure sealing, and the oxygen sensor bungs keep things operating smoothly. Built-in heat shields are 16-gauge steel with 220-degree wrap to keep a rider’s legs from feeling the burn. The muffler on the 2-into-1 system has a 2½-inch inlet with a 4½-inch body. Inside, the high-flow absorbent baffle has a 3-inch reverse cone outlet to maximize torque. In all, the 2-into-1 system is designed to increase horsepower and torque while providing a big dose of style and an aggressive low-frequency sound level. The system arrives with all necessary mounting hardware, including the OEM-style muffler clamp. Khrome Werks offers the 2-into-1 system in three finishes – highly polished nickel chrome, high-temperature proprietary black and Eclipse proprietary black chrome. The Eclipse finish is unique to Khrome Werks, with a burnished black sheen that is achieved via a proprietary, high-temperature black chrome electroplated finish. Khrome Werks is also offering two exciting new billet tipped mufflers alongside their already popular Klassic Tip. The 4½-inch, 16-gauge muffler bodies have black billet tips and come in either a highly-polished chrome finish or the Khrome Werks proprietary black finish

which matches the factory heat shields on Milwaukee 8 equipped touring models. The three different slip-on styles include Turbine, Klassic and Tracer, each with a uniquely designed muffler tip. Inside the muffler, the new absorbent baffle covered with a stainless steel mat and high-temperature fiberglass was developed exclusively for the 2017-2018 Milwaukee-8. Such dedication to the specific motor means that the Turbine, Klassic and Tracer add a boost of torque and horsepower right from the first twist of the throttle. Riders can opt to stick with the signature sound of a Khrome Werks muffler or utilize an optional bolt-in insert that complies with the SAE J2825 sound test, reducing noise without any appreciable loss of performance. These mufflers are also EPA compliant in 49 states. ■

CHAIN CONVERSION KITS

Bigger and Tougher

Chains and Sprockets for a 530 Conversion

B

igger is sometimes better, and when it comes to a 530 chain conversion, bigger is definitely tougher. Swapping a motorcycle’s stock rear drive belt for a 530 chain can result in a stronger, more reliable setup that will let riders get in more miles without worrying about wear or breakage. Drag Specialties now has 530 chain conversion rear sprockets, which combine with the Drag Specialties 530 Series O-ring chain and Chris Products/PBI Sprockets offset transmission sprockets to provide everything a rider needs for a durable upgrade. The rear sprockets for a 530 conversion are available in two finishes – steel or gloss black – and with a flat or dished design. The sprockets that are compatible with 1986-1989 Big Twin and 1992-1999 XL models have a 1.9-inch diameter. A dished design with a 0.46-inch offset comes in 46-, 48-, 49- and 51-tooth options. The dished sprocket with a 0.23-inch offset has 46-, 48- and 49-tooth options. For 2008-2018 Big Twin and 2000-2018 XL models (excepting those with a cush drive), the conversion rear sprockets have a 2.22-inch center diameter. Both the flat and dished styles have a 0.23-inch offset and come in 46-, 48-, 49- and 51-tooth options. The rear sprockets are designed to pair perfectly with the Drag Specialties 530 Series O-ring chain. The chain lengths include 102, 104, 106, 110, 112 and 120 links for plenty of fitment options. The improved wear resistance and strength offered by the 530 chain adds up to an average tensile strength of 9,500 lbs., but without being overly heavy. Quad-pin riveting, tough O-ring seals and solid bushings and rollers all add to the durability features.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2018

Drag Specialties now has everything necessary for a 530 chain conversion, starting with its new rear sprockets that come in a range of tooth options. They pair nicely with the 530 Series O-ring chain and the Chris Products/PBI offset front sprockets.

The chain is pre-stretched at the factory so a rider can get on and go without needing to adjust the tension. A rivetstyle master link is included, although both clip-style and replacement rivet master links are available separately. The chain comes in a natural finish or in chrome, which features stout chrome plating on the side plates for an extra bit of flash. With the chain and rear sprocket taken care of that just leaves the need for a front sprocket that works seamlessly with the 530 conversion. Chris Products/PBI Sprockets have that part of the motorcycle covered with offset sprockets that are designed for use with a 530 chain. The sprockets are CNC machined from premium nickel and chromoly steel, and they are all made in the USA. After machining, each sprocket is case-hardened and finished with an electroless nickel-plating for added corrosion and wear resistance as well as increased lubricity. Offset options for the sprockets include 1.310, 1.060, 0.750, 0.5 and zero inches. The offset measurement is taken from the face that rests against the main shaft bearing to the inside of the teeth for a true description. Sprocket size options range from 21 to 26 teeth. ■

Scorcher Tires for Harley-Davidsons

M

ichelin’s Scorcher tire lineup is a popular choice for Harley-Davidson riders, and for good reason. Not only are they fit as OE on about half of the Harley-Davidson lineup and all the 2018 models, they’re also factory approved replacement tires. Co-developed and co-branded by Michelin and Harley-Davidson, the Scorcher tire line was developed to optimize the ride, feel and handling of a Harley. There are applications for everything from Sportsters to Softails, Dynas to Touring models, and the Streets. A range like that means there are 29 sizes available with tread patterns, compounding and carcass constructions engineered specifically for the bikes they’ll go on. With all those tread patterns, carcass designs and compound blends covering 80 percent of Harley-Davidson’s model lineup (as indicated by Michelin’s new Counter Mat) there’s a lot to choose from here. For help on taking the guesswork out of choosing the Scorcher, Michelin has introduced its Dealer Reference Guide. It’s an easy to understand, full color brochure that outlines all the important features of each Scorcher variant – whether it’s the 11, 21, 31 or 32 – and lists the recommended applications for each. And, right now and continuing through the end of July (act fast), let your customers know that Michelin is offering them a professional grade air-pressure gauge with the purchase of any set of Scorcher tires. This is a pro-quality gauge with a flexible 18-inch lead and the accuracy to monitor those Scorchers for optimum tire maintenance and performance. Viking Handlebars The Cure for Wiring Woes

M

agnum Shielding just made life for dealers a whole lot easier. It’s well known that running internal wiring during a handlebar swap can be a major project depending on the type of bars being installed. The popular “pointy” style handlebars can be an absolute nightmare to install. You can spend hours trying to get the wiring to pass through the corner only to end up chafing or damaging it in the process. Perhaps the hardest part is when it comes to telling the customer how much you have to charge for installation labor, which can be very frustrating for everyone. Magnum Shielding’s new Viking bar is a solution to that time-consuming task that will let your techs move onto the next job and save your customers some money. It’s a solution novel enough that Magnum has applied for a design patent. The Viking handlebar is designed and manufactured specifically for making it easier to install internal wiring harnesses. The company has engineered a design that provides a clean, burr-free internal radius that creates a generous pocket of additional clearance within that troublesome peak of the handlebar.

With Magnum Shielding’s new specially designed Viking handlebar, running internal wiring harnesses during a bar swap is a snap.

To make the job even easier, Magnum includes its EZ pull-thru sleeving, which is pre-loaded into every Viking handlebar. Just insert the wiring harness into the sleeve and pull the wires through the bars – it’s that simple. With the Viking handlebars, your customers get the style they’re looking for without the installation woes. And, getting the job done quickly is more profitable for dealerships, allowing for a quick turnaround time and happier customers. Viking handlebars are made with a premium, high-quality construction that includes machined control mounts (not swaged), machined holes for internal wiring and slots for electronic throttle control that are burr free. The handlebars are 1¼ inch diameter, work with standard controls including hydraulic clutch, are CNC mandrel bent for an accurate fit and incorporate wrist angles engineered for riding comfort. These aggressive-looking Viking handlebars are available in 10-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch Bagger, and 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch ape-hanger styles. Both are available with high luster chrome or gloss black finishes.

The Viking handlebars feature an internal design that provides a clean, burr-free internal radius that offers plenty of clearance at the sharp angle of the bar’s raised horns.

The pocket has enough room to allow the complete wiring harness with the factory vinyl covering (where wiring extensions are added) and the shrink-sleeved terminal connections to easily pass through the corner and be installed without any hang-up, hassle or frustration. The electronic throttle control wires can even be pulled through at the same time!

An Easier Way to Install Aftermarket Electronics

J

ust in time for showing it off to dealers at the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI, Custom Dynamics has introduced a new product called DLI, which stands for Dynamic Load Isolator.

With applications for both Harley-Davidson and Indian models, the DLI makes it easy and safe to wire in aftermarket electronic products. The simple plug and play installation provides output banks for five separate grounds, two accessory/run outputs, left turn signal output, right turn signal output, brake output, integrated right turn/brake output and integrated left turn/brake output. In addition, the 4 Pin Trailer Harness (sold separately) from Custom Dynamics can be wired to the DLI output to provide a completely isolated trailer lighting hook-up. Because the DLI electronically isolates all outputs from the vehicle, there are no relays or other mechanical devices that are subject to mechanical failure. A short circuit on any accessory connected to the DLI outputs will have no impact on the vehicle. Since all outputs are completely isolated from the inputs, there is no damage done and no error codes to worry about should an aftermarket product go bad. The DLI makes an ideal platform for use with other Custom Dynamics products, such as the Plasma Rods, LED License Plate Frames and the Magic Strobes Brake Light Flasher, which adds 10 adjustable brake flash/strobe patterns to the brake, right turn/brake and left turn/brake power outlets. Custom Dynamics has six DLI versions available to suit a wide range of Harley models. The standard DLI for Harleys isolates the motorcycle’s Turn Signal Security Module (TSSM). The BCM and TKE DLI isolate the Body Control Module (BCM). Other options include the SS6 and SS8 – which both utilize the TSSM – and Universal DLI. If the stock rear signals are removed and replaced with an aftermarket application, either a Custom Dynamics Signal Stabilizer (one per bike) or additional CAN-bus adapter (one per turn signal) will also be required depending on the year and model bike. These parts are sold separately. The DLI for Indian applications is plug and play on the 2014-2018 Indian Chief, Springfield, Chieftain or Roadmaster. Dealers should note that a Custom Dynamics CAN-bus adapter is required for each turn signal when the stock rear turn signals are removed for custom applications. ■

Your customers can give their Dynas an even more aggressive stance with the El Diablo system in black or chrome.

A perennial favorite for riders old and new, the Sportster gets the Cobra touch with the El Diablo 3.5-inch, which uses a round muffler body rather than the megaphone shape.

I

t’s the heat of summer and Cobra has been busy cranking out even more new products just ahead of the peak selling season. It’s a lineup of products that covers a wide range of V-twin offerings, from entrylevel motorcycles to Trikes. When it comes to exhausts, 2-into-1 systems have become increasingly popular lately, especially the Cobra El Diablo megaphone-styled systems. Cobra offers fitments for Sportsters and Dynas, and even has a unique version for the new Milwaukee-Eight Softails. One version of the mufflers has an upswept style with the collector located under the right foot peg – a molded heat shield covers the collector. For the 2018 Softail style, Cobra located the collector rearward, closer

obra has also just delivered new Trike headpipes for the 2017 and 2018 Tri Glides and Freewheelers. This head pipe is a version of Cobra’s already popular Bagger version. It uses the same head pipe configuration with its round expansion chamber-style collector that produces the power.

right on, and the aftermarket muffler fitments are the same as the 2009-2016 trikes. Mufflers made for the 2017 and 2018 Baggers – which have a larger rightside inlet, will not fit this head pipe.

However, the Trike version has a couple of slick additions. First, the back parts of the pipes extend backward and bend down to meet up with the mufflers under the body. These built-in bends eliminate the need for the owner to purchase expensive aftermarket S-Bend adapters. Also, the heat shields extend all the way from the exhaust ports to the mufflers leaving none of the raw exhaust tube showing. With these headpipes, Trike riders will experience those same storied Cobra performance gains that standard Bagger riders are enjoying – we’re talking increased horsepower and a boost in the bike’s already strong torque.

Made for the 2017 and 2018 Tri Glide and Freewheeler, the Cobra Trike headpipes have the S-bends built in, eliminating the need for costly adapters.

And, here’s something important to remember. Cobra designed its Trike head pipes to be the same diameter on each side, so the stock Trike mufflers will bolt

to the transmission cover. Both of these systems offer a perfect balance of performance, classic sound and timeless styling. And just to keep things interesting Cobra also offers the El Diablo 3.5-inch, a version that uses a short, 3½-inch round canister style muffler rather than the megaphone muffler. The head pipe section remains unchanged from

the standard El Diablo. It has the same great performance and sound, but it has a more traditional appearance to it. On both versions – canister style and megaphone – the reversed cone, machined aluminum tip has been powdercoated black with the Cobra logo etched into the top line. These systems are available in chrome or black, so there is a color profile for every bike. ■

obra doesn’t play favorites when it comes to helping your HarleyDavidson riding customers boost performance with exhausts that are not only hard charging, but also great looking. For Harley-Davidson’s entry-level 750 Street, Cobra replaces the bulky stock muffler in exchange for a smooth 4-inch slip-on muffler with a reverse cone El Diablo tip, for a crisp clean look and great sound.

For Harley’s hot-rod Street model, the Street Rod, Cobra offers a 4-inch slip-on muffler body that flares out at the end to 4½ inches, and finishes with a couple of tip options – either the El Diablo style reverse cone or the RPT tip with the zinc-plated bolts. With the El Diablo, your Street 750 – both the standard model and the Street Rod – customers get improved sound over stock and an immediate upgrade in appearance.

TIRES

Made in the USA

American Tires for American Bikes Dunlop designs, develops and manufactures its tires at its facility in Buffalo, NY. These are tires built specifically for American-made motorcycles and the way Americans ride them.

Trike rears and all the rest were designed, developed and built right there in Buffalo. “That’s important,” says Mike Buckley, vice president of sales and marketing. “We’re able to hit the mark for the American rider.”

Take a look at the motorcycle only parking area of Dunlop’s Buffalo plant and you’ll see proof positive that the company’s employees not only design and manufacture those tires, they also ride them.

T

ires made in America, by Americans, for American motorcycles, that are designed and built for the way Americans ride on American roads. That, say the folks at Dunlop, is something US riders can appreciate. “We’re totally engaged with this market,” says Mike Manning, Dunlop’s director of marketing. “We design, develop and manufacture our tires right here in Buffalo, NY, and they’re tires built specifically for the American market and the way people ride in America.” It’s been that way since 1923 when Dunlop opened that Buffalo plant, and it’s something that’s continued through to the present day. All those Dunlop tires in the Drag Specialties catalogs, the American Elites, the D401s and 402s, the Signature Series

From the design and development team at Dunlop to the workers out on the factory floor there’s total involvement in the process. The engineers sit about 100 feet from where the tires are actually made. They can walk over to the factory any time to discuss ongoing changes and revisions to the tires in person with the people making them. “That’s huge,” says John Robinson, lead tire design engineer feels. “It means we have complete control over the entire process, start to finish.” “There’s really no start and stop to our tire-development process,” echoes Thomas Grolemund, Dunlop’s developmental engineer. “It’s kind of an ongoing loop. And, having everything here in the US allows us to accelerate that process from design to development to production to having tires out there on the road.” The skilled, experienced technicians building those Dunlop tires are just as committed. “We’re all proud of what we do, proud of the quality we put out,” says Mark Zawadzki, a Dunlop tire builder and motorcycle rider. “We’re conscientious about what we do. It’s our friends and families out there on the tires we build.” Made in America for the American market. Dunlop can say that, and it’s meant something for almost a century. It means something to Harley-Davidson, too. Dunlops have been fit as the OE tires and factory-approved replacements on motorcycles up and down the model lineup for more than 35 years. ■

Ultra Audio

Premium Sound, Simple Installation

Wild Boar Ultra rear speakers

Each Wild Boar Ultra kit comes with a 600-Watt amp with REMIT proprietary circuit, which offers superb FM reception.

The Wild Boar Ultra kit Road Glide front speakers with the supplied chrome trim. The kit also comes with black trim.

P

remium audio systems should never be a pain to install. As Wild Boar Audio owner/president Mike “Pez” Pesdirz says, the simplicity of the company’s products is one of the things that makes the Wild Boar Ultra kits an easy, premium audio upgrade for dealers and customers alike.

Once the Wild Boar Ultra kit is in place, more components can be easily added as they become available from Wild Boar. The plug-and-play expansion gives customers plenty of customization options.

The Wild Boar Ultra kits, which come in one version for FLH-style Ultras (p/n 4405-0499) and another for Road Glides (p/n 4405-0500), are truly a complete package. Each kit contains a 600-Watt amp with REMIT proprietary circuitry, 200-Watt front speakers designed to blend seamlessly into the front fairing, 150-Watt rear speakers that drop into the factory rear speaker pods, wiring, hardware, mounting plates and the new WBAURH (Wild Boar Audio Ultra Rear Harness) so the fader will still operate properly.

The 200-Watt front speakers and 150-Watt rear speakers feature real carbon fiber woofer cones, 1¼-inch titanium impregnated tweeters and studio-grade crossovers.

Having just one part number for everything needed is an improvement over the higher-end OEM audio upgrades, which can require dealers to order multiple part numbers, take longer to install and cost a lot more money. In fact, customers with basic mechanical experience could perform the Wild Boar installation themselves. In keeping with the theme of simplicity, the Wild Boar Ultra kit is designed to work best with the factory HarleyDavidson radio. No crossover, gain or EQ adjustments are required to maintain great sound. As Pez says, “Bike shops are not audio shops, so making it as simple as possible is what our dealers needed.”

The amp, which is 150 Watts x 4 at 4 Ohms, mounts inside the fairing, and it comes with Wild Boar’s REMIT technology, the proprietary design of the circuitry within the Class D amp that offers superb FM reception.

The front speakers utilize 1kg magnets to keep the system both cool and loud, while the rear speakers use Neodymium magnets. The rear speakers have an extra boost when it comes to bass; by designing them to take advantage of factory vents in the Tour Pak, the bass output is quite surprising. Like the other kits from Wild Boar Audio, each Ultra kit comes with a 5-year warranty on speakers and a 3-year warranty on the amplifier. ■

BRAKE PADS

Braking Power Double-H for V-Twins

EBC Brakes has a big range of brake pads specifically made for upgrading the braking power of big, muscular V-twins. There are the HH rated pads, semi-sintered V-Pads, and chrome-backed VLD pads.

W

hen it comes to big, torquey and muscular V-twins, stopping power is just as important as horsepower. One way to upgrade a bike’s braking system is with products from EBC Brakes.

EBC’s Double-H Sintered Brake Pads deliver high performance and are well known as the company’s flagship sintered street brake pad. Designed for high performance motorcycles, the Double-H brake pad is ECE R 90 approved and TÜV tested. They’re made to give your customers a long brake life and ultra-high braking performance in any conditions, dry or wet. These ultra-high friction HH rated brake pads are made for your customers who focus on high performance riding, and are manufactured in the USA at EBC Brakes’ sintering plant in Ohio. Another outstanding offering for your V-twin customers are EBC Brakes’ Semi-Sintered V-Pads. These are a blended brake pad that combines the high qualities of an organic brake pad with the endurance of a sintered equivalent brake pad. The V-Pad ranges are designed for the heavy cruiser/streetbike market as an OE replacement brake pad and also can be used to replace organic or sintered brake pads. The semi-sintered V-Pads employ a blended friction material to combine the feel of an organic pad with the stopping power and endurance of a sintered metal brake pad.

46

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2018

These pads have proven to be amazingly durable on the brake dyno and in the real world. The friction compound is bonded to the backing plate with the Nucap NRS hook retention system to prevent the brake pad from debonding, for added brake life and a great value. Your customers can choose between the V-Pads or EBC Brakes’ semi-sintered limited edition chrome backed VLD pads. These chrome pads are the same as EBC Brakes’ semi-sintered V-Pads, but have polished chrome backing plates instead of orange backing plates. As you can see, EBC Brakes has many pad options to choose from – softer organic pads are the lowest price point, followed by UK-made semi-sintered, high copper formulation V-Pads and then USA-made Double-H sintered pads. At the top of the range are EBC’s superquiet EPFA series Double-H sintered pads. On some V-twins, the thicker rear rotors are made from billet steel that is softer than heat-treated stainless steel, so only EBC Brakes FA series organic pads or the semi-sintered V-Pads should be used with these rotors to avoid rotor damage. ■

At the Peak

Handlebars for Road Glides

A

handlebar swap can be a quick way to give a Road Glide a new look, but it can also result in an uncomfortable ride. That is something that LA Choppers kept in mind when designing the Twin Peaks Touring handlebars. They were created with long-distance riding in mind to provide optimal comfort mile after mile. The team at LA Choppers says that the Twin Peaks Touring handlebars for 2015 and newer Road Glide applications have really been gaining in popularity with dealers because they are easy to install, especially the 10-inch height, which reuses the stock cables. As for the rider, the Twin Peaks Touring handlebars offer an improved wrist angle position for a more natural, comfortable ride. The result is that riders can keep their Road Glide on the go for longer periods of time. The Twin Peaks design is an updated take on conventional ape hangers, featuring a mitered top with a traditional two-bend bottom. The bars come already laser cut for internal wiring, and the handlebars will accommodate both electronic and cable throttles to make them compatible with various setups. Additionally, Twin Peaks Touring handlebars are compatible with heated grips. LA Choppers offers the Twin Peaks Touring handlebars in two finishes for Road Glide applications, including chrome and powdercoated gloss black. Height options for the bars include 10 inches, 13 inches, 16 inches and 19 inches.

All of the Road Glide Twin Peaks bars are designed specifically for the 2015 and newer models, and they feature an overall width of 34 inches, a center width of 9 inches and 6 inches of pullback. The bar diameter is 1¼ inches. In addition to Road Glide-specific applications, LA Choppers also makes clamps that convert from 1¼-inch to 1-inch bars, which allow Road Glide owners to run virtually any of the company’s handlebars, as long as they do not interfere with the fairing. For the handlebar heights that are longer than the stock bars, typically over 10 inches, LA Choppers also has cable kits. Each kit contains the correct length throttle, idle and clutch cables, as well as the front brake line with a chrome T-junction, fittings and banjos with copper crush washers. Dealers can easily select the correct cable kit by entering the bike model and year, plus the LA Choppers handlebar kit being installed, at www.handlebarcables.com. LA Choppers continues to make swapping handlebars as easy as possible for both dealers and customers alike. In addition to the already popular cable website, the company’s website has a whole new design as well as a live chat feature so questions can be answered right away. ■

PART OF THE FAMILY: LONGTIME DEALERS AND SEASONED SALES REPS

D

rag Specialties is well known for its impressive lineup of vendors packing the pages of the FatBook and the OldBook. From longtime favorites to impressive upstarts, the range of manufacturers spans the history and the breadth of the V-twin industry. Equally as impressive is the company’s roster of dealers, retailers both big and small who serve as the lifeblood of the industry. They are the conduits from vendor to consumer, the product delivery arms that help motorcyclists fuel their passions. Serving as the connection between the pages of the FatBook and the shelves and parts counters of dealerships nationwide is Drag’s enthusiastic and skilled sales force. We’re talking reps who not only live and love the V-twin lifestyle, but also form long-lasting bonds with their dealers. Many of these relationships extend beyond

50

the business end of things, and as longtime rep Bobby Pickard says, “It’s a living, but it’s not work.” Some of those dealers have been ordering products from Drag Specialties since Tom Rudd founded the company 50 years ago. A handful of the company’s sales reps have been serving those dealers since Drag launched its force of road reps – some have been around even longer. Longevity like that says something about a company. It says that this business we are in is about more than just motorcycles, that Drag Specialties, its dealers and its sales reps, are about something bigger than just selling products. Sure Drag Specialties is the industry’s V-twin powerhouse, a leader in shipping prowess and product selection, but to the hardworking ‘parts of the whole’ that make it run, it can feel just like family.

onnie Smith needs no introduction among custom bike enthusiasts. But as a refresher, recall that he got his start as a member of Smith Brothers & Fetrow, a drag racing team-cum-custom bike shop that has its origins in the late 1960s. The company included Donnie and his brother Happy, along with Bob Fetrow, as a drag race team that campaigned a Plymouth Barracuda funny car. Donnie’s a little fuzzy on the actual date the company was formed, but he will tell you that he and his partners eventually rolled

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

According to Donnie, SB&F began making custom bike frames for Donnie’s uncle, Elwood Speer, and around 1970 they got into the bike scene. That’s also about the same time that Donnie established his long-lasting ties with Drag Specialties. The custom-bike boom of the 1970s saw their shop flourish. SB&F was producing and selling all sorts of custom bike parts – extended front ends, metal gas tanks, fenders, you name it. That was also the time when Donnie formed his lasting friendship with various other custom bike builders of the time, most notably Arlen Ness and Dave Perewitz. This trio became like family to each other, and each family member seemed

AUGUST 2018

to epitomize the custom bike movement that was happening in America. Fittingly each builder represented a specific part of the country, Ness from the west, Perewitz from the east and Donnie as the midwest builder. About the same time this trifecta, along with several other key members of the custom bike community, formed the Hamsters, a unique organization that, to this day, supports key charities in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Meanwhile, Smith Brothers & Fetrow continued to grow. But SB&F’s product line required costly liability insurance that began eating away at their profits. “It got too costly to do anymore, so in 1985 we shut down Smith Brothers & Fetrow,” Donnie recalls. “We killed the name and the product line.” End of that chapter, but the beginning

The timing was perfect for Donnie’s new business, too. American V-twin motorcycles were becoming popular again, Drag Specialties was under new ownership, and Baby Boomers were shopping for custom parts for their Harleys. Donnie was creating some cool-looking bikes that relied on many cool-looking components from Drag Specialties’ everexpanding inventory. Donnie still relies on the FatBook when chasing down parts for customer bikes, and he says he doesn’t hesitate to call on his sales rep, Mary Fuller, when he needs the parts ASAP to fulfill a build.

“Mary’s been with me for 35 years, maybe longer — I can always count on her,” he says. “She’s almost like my sister.” Seems like, one way or another, Donnie Smith works best when family is involved.

hen Lee and Brenda Clemens opened the doors to Departure Bikeworks, they did so with a small inventory, a worthy cache of tools – and no business license. That was in 1972. The following year they “went legal,” and got that business license, too. “Things were different back then,” Lee says. “We just wanted to run our own business, so we established Departure Bikeworks. We didn’t really know that you needed to have a license to do that.” Indeed, the name was fitting because from the get-go as Lee and Brenda have marched to their own drumbeat. Their original business model was a departure from most other commercial ventures, and it’s seemed to suit them just fine, thank you. Departure Bikeworks’ rogue approach hasn’t changed, either, and the shop’s reputation has spread up and down the eastern seaboard. “We get visited all the time by people from out of state,” Lee says. “They’re blown away by the shop.” There’s an old-school atmosphere that greets visitors and customers the moment

Being in business for so long, Lee and Brenda know firsthand the ups and downs that the American V-twin market has experienced through the years. “Almost from the beginning we were doing our parts business with Drag Specialties,” Lee says. Lee points out that during the explosive growth of the Harley market during the mid ’80s and early ’90s, people from all walks of life walked into their shop to be a part of what some people term “the Harley movement.” Part of that movement culminated in Departure Bikeworks participating in the Biker Build-Off series that appeared on cable television in 2006. “When things cooled down after the 2008 crash, the wannabes pretty much left, but the diehard riders still remain,” Lee says. It’s those diehards that Lee and Brenda enjoy having at the shop.

In addition to providing sound service to its customers, Departure enjoys sponsoring occasional weekend rides, and most recently the shop promoted a free swap meet where people could display and sell some of their old parts and bikes. “Rally In The Alley,” Lee explains. “That’s what we call it, and it’s a way to help our customers recycle their old parts.” And old parts, it seems, are becoming more and more popular among Departure’s customers. “The past five or so years we’ve seen a lot more antique stuff going on,” he says. “We dig into the OldBook a lot these days.” In one aspect that’s a departure from the kind of business that Departure Bikeworks is used to, and in other ways it’s just business as usual for them. Such is the life of Lee and Brenda Clemens.

R

odney’s Cycle House had been in business for about five years when a reporter from the local television station paid Rodney Roberts a visit. During the subsequent news feature that the station aired, the reporter asked Rodney what he intended to do when the custom bike “fad was over,” figuring that nobody could maintain a niche business forever. There’s just one thing. Nobody ever told Rodney that a niche motorcycle shop such as his couldn’t stay in business forever, so for nearly 50 years now the owner of the peculiar bike shop in Southwest Little Rock, Arkansas, has been plugging along just fine. In fact, about six years ago Rodney moved his business to a new and larger building that’s also closer to the interstate highway that runs through Little Rock. “The original shop was

That “forever” actually started in 1970. Fresh out of the US Army, Rodney parlayed his skills – he was a machinist in the Army, and he wasn’t a bad motorcycle mechanic either – into a business. “I also had a threedrawer tool chest that my grandma gave me for my 13th birthday,” he adds. The place of business was that old neighborhood house, and within a few years he added another building to the premises. Rodney’s Cycle House was booming, and he attributes some of that growth to his affiliation with Drag Specialties. “I dealt with Tom Rudd personally,” he recalls. “They were doing things right, and it helped me stay organized and busy.” Rodney stayed busy in other capacities, too, which led him to the state capitol building in Little Rock. There he, along with a small army of other motorcyclists, petitioned the state legislature for nearly 15 years to repeal the helmet law. By 1997 the self-appointed lobbyists won, and Arkansas became a ride-free state.

Meanwhile, back at the shop, Rodney began formulating methods to computerize his business and its customer base. His plan began percolating in about 1989 and within a couple years Rodney pushed the button to enter the cyber side of doing business. Today his data base accounts for all sorts of helpful information and background material that keeps him updated on what his customers’ bikes may or may not need, basing it all on the data he’s accumulated and stored “in the box,” as he put it. Rodney’s Cycle House’s new spacious building has become known as the “Super Store of Motorcycle Parts” among local riders. It’s also become a dining destination. You see, adjacent to the huge store you’ll find Rodney’s Handlebar & Grill, an outdoor patio bar where customers can sit and relax, perhaps to enjoy a freshly grilled hamburger with a favorite beverage of choice, while the service department installs a few new parts or gives the bike a quick service check. Looks like the fad is far from over.

Such is the story of Bear, owner of Bear’s Place, one of the most colorful and dynamic bike shops you’ll find in Minnesota’s Twin Cities region. Bear’s cooling off period? Well, it happened in the cooler. As Bear himself

Prior to serving in the military (where, as a member of the First Division, best known as the Big Red 1, he played trombone for the US Army Band!), Bear honed his mechanical skills repairing his friends’ motorcycles at home. It was due primarily to those mechanical skills that Bear was able to make up his mind on what kind of honest living he wanted to make.

“I decided to open my own shop,” he said, which he did near downtown St. Paul in 1973. Eventually the guys at Drag Specialties learned about Bear’s Place so they paid the young aspiring entrepreneur a visit. “Randy Riley was my first sales rep, and now Mary [Fuller] handles my parts orders,” Bear recalls. Bear has been selling his customers parts from Drag Specialties’ vast inventory ever since. “I’m open and honest with my customers, too,” he says. “I show them exactly what I pay for the parts I put on their bikes, and then I show them what they’ll pay me for those parts. I want this to be an honest shop, so I’m up front with them on both ends.”

Working on older Harleys also means that Bear often relies on the OldBook for many of the replacement parts for his customers’ bikes. It’s been that way for years, and Bear sees no reason to change his work habits now. Honesty and transparency are familiar fixtures at Bear’s Place, but one thing

that causes more than one customer to scratch his head concerns the name Bear itself. What’s the shop owner’s real name? Well, as the shop sign says, this is Bear’s Place – the owner’s name is Bear.

“Bear is my legal name. And it’s just one name, nothing else but Bear,” he proudly proclaims. “In fact, as far as I know, I’m the only person in the country with that single name.”

ARLIN FATLAND: ROCKY MOUNTAIN ROAR

T

here’s something to be said about success arising as the result of good old-fashioned hard work. Such is the case of 2 Wheelers, a hardcore bike shop in Denver that has, for years, specialized in providing parts and service to HarleyDavidson and custom-bike owners. But when Arlin Fatland and his good friend Jim Taylor established 2 Wheelers back in 1970, the game plan was to provide parts and service for owners of off-road and motocross bikes, not Harleys. Those big American V-twin motorcycles weren’t in 2 Wheelers’ picture – yet.

That led to another pivotal moment in the shop’s history – in 1987 Arlin and Jim opened what amounted to a satellite store in Sturgis for the Black Hills Rally. The following year a similar 2 Wheelers venture sprouted in Daytona Beach and the crew from Denver has been knee deep in parts at those two rallies ever since.

“But within a couple years we began to work on Triumphs and BSAs, and then we got more and more customers who were Harley owners and they wanted parts and service for their bikes,” says Arlin.

“We basically strip our store in Denver and take the parts inventory there,” he says. When the rally crowd heads home, so does the 2 Wheelers crew, closing shop for the duration of the year while they retreat back to Denver with what remaining parts they have from the bike rally sale.

Within five years, 2 Wheelers shifted to become ground zero in Denver for custom Harley parts and full-on custom bike builds. By that time, too, Drag Specialties was an integral part of the business, supplying many of the parts necessary to keep all those Rocky Mountain customers’ bikes rolling.

It was during those home stands that Arlin spent a fair amount of his time in the Denver shop building custom bikes during the ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s. Although he no longer builds custom bikes, he does keep his customers supplied with plenty of custom V-twin parts from the FatBook and the OldBook.

Drag rep Mary Fuller recalls some of Bear’s earlier dogs. “When he would come out to Drag to pick up his orders, he would let Bob out a block early and he would run ahead to the warehouse, and that’s how we knew Bear was almost there.”

That honesty and transparency has kept Bear in business ever since. Mostly you’ll find Harleys waiting on the floor for service or repair. Make that on the shop’s two floors, because Bear’s Place consumes a spacious two-story building on St. Paul’s east side.

For many years, 2 Wheelers served as a hub for multiple block parties, charity rides and bike runs. One favorite was the annual toy run just before Christmas.

ary Fuller’s tenure at Drag Specialties spans five decades, and she’s proud that some of her dealers still refer to her as “No. 82,” a respectful reference to her assigned rep number in Drag’s national road-rep team. Smaller numbers generally indicate that a rep has been with the company for many years, and with a team this big, having a two-digit number is noteworthy.

“I started with Drag Specialties August 20, 1979, first working in the mail room,” Fuller recalls. And even though Pickard’s Drag Specialties road rep number is 81, he’s actually the first person to work as a road rep for the company. Prior to Pickard joining Drag Specialties in 1990, the company’s sales team consisted only of sales reps, the title given to the men and women in the office taking orders over the telephone from their assigned dealers. “When Fred Fox took over Drag I proposed to him that I could do really well as a road rep for Drag,” Pickard says. “I had worked previously as

Fox and other people in management decided to give it a try, and just as Pickard promised, his efforts were met with success. Practically overnight Drag Specialties entered a new era in how it conducted business with its dealers. Added Pickard: “Bill Newell was the second road rep.” Pickard adds that those early days as the company’s first road reps were exciting times. “There were no rules. We made things up as we went,” he said. Over time many of the things learned are now ingrained in all the company’s road reps. And, while it can be tough work, as Pickard and most other road reps point out, being a Drag Specialties road rep isn’t necessarily work per se. “Racing is what got me into repping,” he states with pride. “It’s a living, but it’s not work.”

Her territory includes some high-profile bike builders and shops, among them Donnie Smith Custom Cycles and Bear’s Place. Even with such notable names on her roster, he’s quick to point out that every dealer, big or small, is important. “My job still requires me to personally visit all my dealers. And that’s good because when I’m at their shops I get a better sense of what their inventories might need,” she says. “Selling is more than just taking and filling orders. It’s about knowing what parts help fuel your dealers’ engines.” Pickard is consistently a topselling Drag Specialties sales rep. You'll usually find him up on the "podium" at Drag's annual awards banquet, picking up another honor for his hard work.

YEARS 1968-2018

Drag rep Bill Newell grew up on two wheels. He got a jumpstart in the motorcycle business – his father owned a motorcycle dealership in upstate New York.

I

f you really want to get Bill Newell’s attention, just say two words, motorcycle racing. And, as you might guess, Newell (road rep #50) is a racer, specifically a flat tracker. “I started flat tracking when I was 15,” he said. He’s raced for 42 years, “including the senior classes that I most recently competed in.” Newell got a head start in racing and in the motorcycle business, thanks in large part to his father who owned a motorcycle dealership in upstate New York. Papa Newell raced with number 10 on his front plate, so one by one when his boys became old enough to race they selected sequential numbers.

F

or many Harley-Davidson riders, it’s all about the chrome. This is something Jim Orrock knows first hand. It’s that demand for shiny parts that eventually led him to becoming a Drag Specialties road rep in 2000. “I formed my own chrome exchange business back in the mid ‘90s,” Orrock says. “I’d go to swap meets to buy parts, then have them chromed to re-sell them.” It was a straightforward business profile – product in equals product out, and life was great. But when an opening for a sales rep at nearby Drag Specialties came up, Orrock figured he could make an even better living selling somebody else’s parts. The desk job didn’t last long, though, because at about the same time Drag

By the time Newell was of age, number 13 was the next number available. “So I took it,” he said. “My bike was painted metal flake green, the same color as my dad’s bike. Superstitious people say that green and number 13 are supposed to be bad luck. I don’t think so, though.”

track racers, street trackers and a 2004 Harley-Davidson Road King

He also has a soft spot for old bikes. In fact, he recently “adopted” a 1986 Honda VF500 Interceptor. “It was in great shape, still had the original Dunlop tires on it,” he says. “It was priced low and I knew that if some young kid bought it he’d destroy it. The bike was in too good of shape to let that happen, so I bought it.”

Doc’s Motorcycle Parts is celebrating 50 years in business in 2019. The store has long counted on the Drag Specialties product line and sales rep, Bill Newell. Pictured from left: dealership chairman Doc D’Occhio, Newell, CAO Wendy D’Occhio and president/CEO Mike “Doc” D’Occhio.

His personal ride is a 2004 Road King that he constantly changes in terms of its custom parts and paint. “With so many parts to choose from in the FatBook, why wouldn’t I customize it?” As for his sales area, Newell patrols parts of New York state and Connecticut where he visits his Drag Specialties dealers. And those dealers and shop owners

have relied on Drag Specialties as their parts suppliers for many years. One in particular, Doc’s Motorcycle Parts in Waterbury, CT, celebrates its landmark 50th anniversary next year.

Specialties was expanding its network of road reps. Orrock wanted in, and they gave him a territory. The first year or so he gained many insights about selling on the road from fellow road rep Bill Newell, whose territory was a little farther north. “I guess you could say that Bill was my mentor, of sorts,” he says.

Even though Orrock and his wife were born and raised in Minnesota, they both consider themselves true-blue Tar Heelers now, with their home in the heart of North Carolina, which also happens to be ground zero for his sales territory. His favorite part of the job? “Just being around motorcycle people,” he notes.

“I really enjoy Drag’s dealer rides because that’s when we get to forget about business and simply enjoy ourselves.” No doubt, those dealer rides have become fixtures on Drag Specialties’ calendar, and Covell cites one memorable dealer ride in particular. It was when the Drag clan recently gathered in Las Vegas that Covell got the opportunity to visit Death Valley National Park, a place he always wanted to see. See that? Business and pleasure.

See, she bought a Honda 250 Rebel while in college and the riding experience hooked her for good. “I loved it!” she recalls, but we’re not sure if “it” was the bike or biking, or both! In any case, she wanted to be part of the motorcycle industry.

“I’m glad that Drag ‘stole’ me away [from Parts Unlimited] because I really enjoy the people working at the Harley shops I visit,” she says. She’s especially fond of the casual atmosphere found in the smaller shops, citing a few in particular, among them American At Large (in Carrollton, KY, owned by Ray and Lynn Vaught) and C&T Cycles (Mike and Stephanie Lemen in Scottsburg, IN).

About that same time Becky accepted some part-time assignments with Kawasaki Motor Corporation that, for several years in a row, landed her at the Sturgis Black Hills Rally. Eventually, her journey led back to Minnesota where she hired on with LeMans Corporation, working for Parts Unlimited’s sales team.

Family affair — After connecting with some siblings she’d never known, she found out her two brothers and a sister all ride. “I never grew up around bikes, but it was just in my blood,” she says.

As a longtime Drag Specialties employee, Covell reflected on some of his most memorable moments as a member of the sales team.

After three years as a seller at the phone desk, she was transferred to Drag Specialties as a road rep – number 151 to be precise – with her territory’s epicenter being the middle state of Indiana.

hortly after graduating from college in Minnesota, Becky Brown found herself traveling throughout the Midwest landscape. Her first stop was Michigan where she accepted a job at a motorcycle dealership.

For instance, the H50 rear tire has a larger crown profile for better adhesion on road surfaces and a compound developed to do that with extended-mileage capability. For the fronts, there is a large, uniformly shaped contact patch for high cornering power that Bridgestone has coupled with an easy, precise feel. By focusing on the basic carcass design and its vertical stiffness, the H50 tires strike a perfect balance between

rigidity and shock absorption. They’ll deliver a comfortable ride to go with all that performance and longevity. Then there’s the look. A tire’s appearance is pretty important to a Harley rider and these Bridgestones have the aggressive look riders want. Even better, there is performance designed into these tough looking tread patterns. In fact, the H50’s tread-design is the culmination of everything Bridgestone has learned over the years, tread patterns proven under actual road conditions and with thousands of miles of testing. They look good and they perform, a win/win. The Battlecruise H50 also comes with Bridgestone’s Supplemental Road Hazard Warranty, a replacement program covering the tires against any road hazard rendering the tire damaged or unusable. Riders need to know that, too. ■

CLUTCHES

Clutch Upgrades

Scorpion Performance for Harleys With the light or medium springs installed, or a custom combination of them, the lever pull can be nice and easy, yet, at the top-end, that clutch will grab tight as a vice. The Scorpion’s centrifugally weighted fingers on a lowprofile billet aluminum lock-up pressure plate make this possible. The faster this clutch spins the tighter it grips and it fits into a stock clutch basket. Cable and hydraulic versions are available. A Scorpion billet clutch basket makes things even better. Besides being a good and cost effective solution to a broken or worn OE basket, the Scorpion basket is a performance upgrade. Available for 2007 and later Big Twins, the baskets are precision machined from 2024-T3 billet aluminum and hard anodized. It’s a big step up from OE in quality and durability and a direct bolt-in replacement. All that Scorpion Series gear is good looking, too, almost too good looking to hide. With a Scorpion Series clear derby cover your customers don’t have to. They are designed to fit OEM primary covers on 1998 and up Big Twins and 2015-2018 FLs with the narrow primary. A ¼-inch thick clear polycarbonate window puts that clutch in plain view.

When it comes to replacing an OE clutch, your customers can consider an upgrade from Barnett, notably its Scorpion billet clutch basket and Scorpion Low Profile Lock-Up Clutch.

T

here’s not a Harley-Davidson that won’t benefit from a clutch upgrade. Sportsters, Softails, Touring models, Dynas, riders on all those Harleys appreciate a strong-gripping, easyreleasing, light-at-the-lever clutch. Barnett has what they’re looking for, a lineup that includes the Scorpion Series, the Low-Profile Lock-Up clutches, billet clutch baskets and Scorpion Series clear derby covers to show everything off. Easily installed, readily available and reasonably priced, applications cover almost every Harley on the road.

Scratch-and-discoloration resistant, the window is firmly secured and sealed with an O-ring gasket and its outer mounting ring is CNC machined from billet aluminum and available with a chrome or black-powder-coat finish. ■

»» Talk with your Drag rep for details and check out www.barnettclutches.com.

Barnett’s line of Scorpion clutch products is so good looking, your customers won’t want to hide them. The Scorpion Series clear derby cover puts everything on display.

The popularity of a Scorpion setup is easy to understand. Those Scorpion Low Profile Lock-Up clutches bring dragstrip technology to the street. They’ll provide a light lever effort for everything from stock or mildly modified bikes up to 200-plus horsepower applications. And, it all fits under a stock primary cover. The clutch surface area and capacity are greatly increased compared to stock. The friction plates are all Kevlar and three different sets of coil springs are provided for a wide variety of initial pressure options.

Rock While Rolling New ROKKER Amps

The specific green-band plug-n-play RCA input harnesses included with these kits takes the 4-channels of audio signal available from the Ultra/Ltd. version of the Harley Infotainment radio and provides 4 separate channels of amplification at 175 watts RMS continuous power per-channel into a 2-ohm or 4-ohm speaker load. This is a full range class D digital amplifier properly shielded against RF interference into the AM or FM stereo radio bands.

For many Bagger riders, music is as much a part of the ride as the breeze in their faces and the rumble of those V-twins. J&M Corporation can help them improve the sound of their bike’s sound system.

The ROKKER XXRP amplifiers use advanced digital switching power supply technology to dramatically reduce the 12V current demands on the motorcycle electrical system. The amplifiers mount to custom made stainless steel two-piece bracket systems, to provide solid and secure mounting inside the fairing – this also stops amplifier heat from being transferred to the radio.

M

otorcycles and music go together like thunder and lightning. The sound of a welltuned V-twin is just as amazing as the sound of a well-tuned audio system. Put the two together and you’ve got music to your customer’s ears. For 40-plus years, J&M Corporation has manufactured high quality motorcycle audio products for your customers, a line that now includes the new J&M ROKKER XXRP DSP controlled 4-channel 700-watt RMS fairing/rear speaker amplifier kits. These new kits have been designed specifically for use on the 2014-2018 Harley-Davidson Baggers with the stock Harley infotainment radio (no radio flash required.) J&M’s ROKKER XXRP 700w 4-CH DSP Programmable Amplifier is a powerful and high performance amplifier for your customer’s Harley-Davidson audio system. They provide superb sound quality and raw audio power provided by these amplifier kits, especially at highway speeds.

Pumping Blue

Improved Oil Flow for the Milwaukee-Eight

O

il is often referred to as the lifeblood of an engine, and getting it into and out of the right places at the right times can be a matter of life or death for internal components.

This critical job is placed on the oil pump and can be made even more difficult by performance engines and hard riding. Much like a person’s heart, the oil pump has to ensure this essential fluid is distributed quickly and effectively or very bad things can happen. Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight is a solid engine that’s capable of making significant power, but like previous engine families it needs an oil flow upgrade. This is where

68

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2018

the folks at S&S Cycle come in – after all, V-twin engines are part of the company’s DNA. Having long ago sorted out high-performance oil pump technology, S&S Cycle techs have now applied their multirotor design to the new latest engine platform from The Motor Company. Hot off the CNC mill, and available through Drag Specialties, the new oil pump and cam plate from S&S Cycle are highly desirable mods for a well-sorted engine. Inspired by the company’s successful Twin Cam pumps, the new unit utilizes siphon rotors in both the flywheel cavity and cam chest, allowing the pump to effectively grab oil in the bottom end of the motor and keep it moving.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

S&S

S&S Cycle’s new oil pump and cam plate is designed to upgrade the stock oiling system on the Milwaukee-Eight engine, helping to ensure that critical functions are cool and lubricated.

The new pump also uses two filter screens and a magnet to better capture any debris, and keep it from entering the remainder of the engine. Also unique to the S&S pump is a pressure relief valve that can be adjusted with the pump still installed in the engine. These features are unique to S&S Cycle’s pump. Perfectly matched to that high flow pump, the S&S Cycle cam plate for Milwaukee-Eight engines could be considered a work of art. Machined from billet aluminum for excellent strength and dimensional accuracy, the cam support plate uses pressedin bushings to reduce friction, and a steel wear-plate is to prevent burrs or subtle wear lines from occurring as the pump rotates against the plate. Removable plugs in the oil passages to facilitate cleaning of the plate are also unique to the S&S unit. The end result is a solid pairing designed to keep the oil in your customers’ V-twins moving along, keeping all critical functions cool and lubricated. S&S Cycle has oil pump/cam plate kits for both the oil-cooled and water-cooled Milwaukee-Eight models. Like all of the company’s parts, they are made in the USA. ■

High-Performance Handling New Suspensions for a Range of Models

L

egend Suspensions has a range of upgraded suspensions for Harley-Davidson models, a lineup that now includes new air-ride setups for the 2018 Softails and high-performance, cartridgestyle forks for Softails, Dynas and Sportsters. 2018 Softail riders can now have air-ride rear suspension thanks to the new AIR-A M-Eight systems. This new design, specifically for the Milwaukee-Eight powered bikes, provides a plush compliant ride, with higher bottoming resistance There’s optimum rebound performance regardless of a rider’s weight, and riders can also adjust them for everything from aggressive riding to casual cruising. Simply push the handlebar-mounted button to fine-tune the ride quality while stopped or on the go. They can be fine-tuned for rebound via the six-position external knob adjustments, and there’s the exclusive Aramid Fiber air-spring technology that provides for spring

rate adjustment on the go. The self-adjusting deflective disc damping ensures controlled performance, while the air springs maximize wheel travel and conform to any desired ride height. The AIR-A M-Eight comes with a pre-wired air compressor, a complete wiring harness, and is easy to install – it simply installs under the seat, replacing the stock shock. Complementing that AIR-A system are Legend’s new high-performance/cartridge-style fork upgrades for the Milwaukee-Eight Softails. The AXEO M8 is designed for all the new Softails with 49mm forks, while the AXEO43 Inverted are built for the new Fat Bobs. There is also a high-performance, cartridge-style front suspension – the AXEO39TS – for 39mm Dyna and Sportster forks. The AXEO drop-in cartridges are an easy-to-install upgrade that will immediately provide an upgrade in ride quality and control over stock. With these installed, your customer will enjoy improved stability, cornering and traction, and they eliminate front-end dive during aggressive braking and maneuvering. They also provide a firm feel when navigating high-speed sweeping turns, stop the bike from bottoming out on large bumps or potholes and reduces the chance of dragging floorboards and pegs. Riders can use the machined stainless steel preload adjuster to fine-tune the increased preload range for various riding styles and body weight. The AXEO43 has a proprietary micrometer preload adjustor and internal linear spring guide. Performance for Custom Baggers

T

he performance Bagger scene is a whole new market niche and it’s growing by leaps and bounds. Riders are eager to add improved power, handling and braking to their highly styled machines. Many of your customers are happy with the custom look of their Harley-Davidsons thanks to swoopy bodywork, extended saddlebags, new seats, grips, handlebars, levers, floorboards and the rest, but now they’re looking for more. Performance upgrades are on the list and they can be found right there in the FatBook.

The options for big-bore kits and performance-ported heads, two more sure-fire routes to enhanced performance, are just as varied. S&S Cycle is a player here, as is Revolution Performance and the others. Putting that newly found power to the ground is another important part of performance, as is controlling it. This is where clutches and driveline components along with upgraded suspensions, tires and brakes come into play. BRAKE PADS

Compound Interest

Choosing the Right Brake Pad Let your customers know that selecting the right brake pad compound for front and rear can make a big difference in how well their motorcycles will stop. SBS has a number of options available.

B

etter braking is about a lot more than simply putting on a fresh set of brake pads. The compound choice can make a big difference in how well – and how safely – a motorcycle stops. To make that choice an easier one, SBS has a few tips about choosing the right compound for the right motorcycle.

SBS also has organic compounds available through Drag Specialties. The H.CT and H.HF are both organic compound options for V-twins that offer excellent, consistent braking in wet or dry conditions. They are also an ideal replacement brake pad for older bikes that did not originally come with sintered pads.

Not only can the model year make a difference, but even where the brake pad is being installed makes a difference in compound choice. Some bikes take the same shaped pads for the front and rear brakes, but each brake system has different performance attributes that should be taken into consideration.

Both of the organic compounds use SBS’s NRS (Nucap Retention System) technology. Normally, an adhesive is used to attach the friction material to the backing plate. Even when using an extremely heat-tolerant adhesive, it is still at risk of decomposing and delaminating at high temperatures.

SBS has H.HS and H.LS sintered compounds that are best suited for new models, including Touring models and any riders looking for a high-performance brake pad.

NRS, on the other hand, uses a retention system consisting of unidirectional hooks on the backing plate. The result is there is less of a risk of separation between the backing plate and friction material, no vibration between the two components, and an incredibly strong mechanical bond that is not affected by temperature.

The H.HS compound is designed specifically for front brakes. The HH rating is the result of development in racing, with further tuning for street applications to provide a low-wear, high-performance combination. It is very easy on rotors and generates very little dust. Meanwhile, the H.LS sintered compound brake pads are made specifically for the rear brake on late model bikes. It has less stopping power than the H.HS compound so that there is less risk of a rider locking up the rear wheel under hard braking. The H.HS and H.LS compounds have outstanding noisereducing technology, too, so altogether riders can brake efficiently with less dust, less strain on the rotors and less noise. SBS recommends this pad combination as an OE replacement for sintered pads.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2018

The H.CT organic compound brake pads are ideal for polished rotors as well as older bikes. Based on an organic racing compound, the H.CT has an HH rating, handles heat well and does not fade. The H.HF organic compound works well on all types of rotors, including cast iron. The combination of good stopping power and a competitive price point makes it an attractive aftermarket option. ■

Tough Pistons for Twin-Cams

A

s a piston manufacturer with more than 80 years of experience, UEM Pistons knows that engine components need to be able to perform well even under the toughest of circumstances.

PISTONS

Heavy-Duty Hardware

Motorcycle owners should be able to ride hard without worrying about reliability. To make sure that happens, UEM Pistons has introduced a line of KB Performance pistons for Harley-Davidson Twin-Cam applications. The Super Duty piston series provides premium performance and protection even in severe operating conditions. The Super Duty pistons come standard with Adaptive Skirt Technology utilizing Line2Line coatings. The abradable coating is applied to thickness that nearly equals the piston to wall clearance, which is roughly 0.003-inch. The coating abrades on start-up, providing the perfect fit for each cylinder. Adaptive Skirt Technology eliminates piston rock for the best possible ring seal and there will be no piston slap noise. Improved efficiency, lower friction and protection against scuffs and excess wear are other benefits of UEM’s Adaptive Skirt Technology. The pistons have a dome shape to accept bathtub-shaped 85cc or teardrop-shaped 95cc heads. The crowns and top ring groove are both hard anodized. This process aids in heat deflection and prevention of corrosion from alcohol fuels, and it prevents the top ring from micro welding to the groove. Because the ring groove maintains a flat and smooth surface, the ring seal is optimized. The complete KB Super Duty piston kit includes pistons, rings, pins and locks. Applications are available for a

variety of Twin-Cam 103-inch, 110-inch and 117-inch engines that use a stock 4.375-inch stroke and 4.937-inch cylinder length. As an interesting side note, UEM Pistons got its start as United Engine and Machine Company back in 1922. The company was a piston manufacturer from the start, growing and building a name for premium quality during those first eight years. Things would have continued along that track, but America’s entrance into World War II abruptly changed things for UEM. During the war, the company’s focus switched to supplying special marine applications for PT boats and some small munitions. After the war, UEM went back to pistons and continued to grow with each decade. In 1978, UEM relocated from its home in California’s Bay Area to Carson City, NV, where it still is today. Currently, UEM manufactures several brand name lines of pistons, including KB Performance Pistons. ■

A win/ win all around, performance and price, the CS-34A even works with either style stator rotor, 2007-2010 or 2011-2016, so there’s no added cost there, either. A three-piece design, the BDL compensators are highgrade steel with two special-design Nylatron washers between the sprocket and sprocket carrier. Both the sprocket and carrier are threaded and liberally coated with anti-seize compound during installation. This is a design that allows the sprocket to rotate slightly on the carrier and, aided by those Nylatron washers, absorb the shock of hard downshifts and starting kickbacks. ■

Altered Oiling Upgrades for the Milwaukee-Eight

Feuling’s HP+ Oiling System and Race Series camchest kit comes complete with everything necessary to not only upgrade a Milwaukee-Eight’s oiling system, but to also provide a healthy performance boost.

N

ew engine designs can have issues and your customers on HarleyDavidsons powered by the Milwaukee-Eight might have noticed frequent check oil warnings. The culprit is rising oil levels in the engine sump and the engineers at Harley-Davidson have reportedly gone through a number of oil-pump revisions, but many report the warnings are still coming on.

Feuling Parts has the fix for this and it’s the company’s HP+ Oiling System for 2017 – 2018 oil-cooled Milwaukee-Eight engine. Feuling addresses the issue with a newly designed 6061 billet aluminum high-volume oil pump, a unique high-flow camplate, and a full set of HP+ hydraulic roller lifters. The system also includes the necessary gaskets, O-rings, cam bearings, cam/crank bolts and washers, and the assembly lube – all under one part number. With the Oiling System installed Feuling reports 27 percent more pressure and scavenge-gear volume over stock, a 50 percent reduction of engine-sump oil levels, and 10 to 30 more PSI of oil pressure. There is also 68 percent more oil volume sent to the crankshaft and connecting rod bearing, 15 degree to 30 degree cooler oil temperatures, and 15 degree to 25 degree cooler engine temperatures. Feuling’s testing has also shown a 2 horsepower gain and an additional 2 ft./lbs. of torque. Feuling’s Race Series camchest kit takes things one step further. Coming with a Race Series 7075 billet aluminum oil pump that’s 50 percent stronger than OE there’s also a high-flow 7075 billet aluminum camplate, Race Series hydraulic roller lifters, new pushrods and Feuling’s rocker-arm studs and nuts. And along with all the gaskets, O-rings, seals, fasteners and assembly lube the Camchest Kit also packs a Reaper camshaft* into the mix for a serious performance boost to go with the oiling-system upgrade.

Long-Haul Luxury Super Touring Deluxe

L

ong-distance riders who feast on a steady diet of mile markers need a seat that allows them to satisfy their hunger for more time in the saddle. That’s exactly what Mustang’s Super Touring Deluxe was designed for.

Super Touring Deluxe

Available for both early and late-model Harley-Davidson FL Touring bikes, the Super Touring Deluxe is engineered to provide uncompromising comfort for rider and passenger. The seat is also visually stunning, as Mustang designers took styling cues from automotive interiors to craft a unique stitch pattern in the high-quality vinyl cover, highlighted by the tuck-and-roll center inlay extending through the passenger section. The main difference between the Super Touring Deluxe for 1997-2007 (p/n 0801-1062) and 2008-later FLs (p/n 08010962) is operator placement. While both are considered an extended reach design, early model fitment places riders 1 inch further back compared to the stock position. Latemodel owners are placed 1¾ inches back. A heated option is also available for 2008-later models (p/n 0801-0963.)

A 19-inch wide front bucket offers ideal body angle placement along with ample lumbar support. The generous 14-inch wide rear seat is also properly contoured, delivering support across its full width to keep passengers firmly in the comfort zone. Matching accessories for the Super Touring Deluxe include fully adjustable and easily removable driver backrests for both early and late model FLs, as well as passenger armrests for 2008-later models equipped with Tour-Paks. ■

hen it comes to valve profile designs at Kibblewhite Precision Machining, Inc., there is a popularity contest going on. As several profiles have risen in demand from customers, KPMI has begun to adapt them for additional applications. The result is a growing line of valves for Harley-Davidson that crossover with the popular AV&V product line. The latest valves use KPMI’s proven Black Diamond™ treatment process. This means a long lasting valve that seamlessly integrates with other AV&V valvetrain components.

The Black Diamond valves are available for the Evolution and Twin Cam engines, as well as for models going back to the Flathead. KPMI also offers valve profiles that are compatible with aftermarket heads produced by S&S Cycle. KPMI’s Black Diamond valves for Harley-Davidsons are designed to provide excellent flow characteristics. There are fitments for engines starting with the Evolution, and going all the way back to the Flathead.

All KPMI Black Diamond stainless steel valves are impregnated by a special process to a depth of .002 inches with a surface build-up of .0002 inches. This process improves wear properties, reduces friction and provides resistance to corrosion and wear that is superior to chrome and nickel electrolysis plating. Each valve is designed using Finite Element Analysis software, and profiles are tested on KPMI’s computerized flow bench. Black Diamond valves are lightweight, strong and one-piece forged with profiles that provide excellent flow characteristics. Since 1939, KPMI has designed and manufactured innovative quality products. The family-owned manufacturer now occupies five locations in Pacifica, CA, totaling more than 20,000 square feet of machine shop, office, engineering and warehouse space. ■

hether a customer is building a complete custom motorcycle or simply wants to give an edgier look to a stock bike, swapping out the OE mirrors for an aftermarket set does a lot to update the look of a motorcycle. Ken’s Factory designs mirrors for riders who want to get a big effect with little effort. Drag Specialties carries three very distinct Ken’s Factory styles, including the Vanquish, Classic and Ribbed. The mirrors are all manufactured of 2017 billet aluminum, and the two finish options are polished or machine black.

Each has a stem height of 3½ inches, and all mounting hardware is included in the package. The left and right mirrors are both sold separately. The Vanquish mirrors are among the best sellers at Ken’s Factory, thanks in large part to the dramatic styling. The black machined option features contrast-cut detailing for just a pop of polished aluminum, along with a polished aluminum base and a subtle Ken’s Factory logo. The glass size is 41/8 inches x 1¾ inches. The Classic mirrors are just that, a modern take on the classic round mirror, with a 2¾-inch diameter glass. On the opposite end of the style spectrum is the Ribbed mirror, which features a stylized rectangle shape with a glass size of 41/6 inches x 17/8 inches. Like the Vanquish, both the Classic and Ribbed have contrast-cut details on the black option. ■
