Celebrating A Life of Achievement by D on Em de

The amazing Sturgis Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award trophy was created by noted motorcycle historian and sculptor Jeff Decker. A special feature was that the stamps used for the lettering came from the original Indian Motorcycle Company where they were used to stamp the engine numbers. It was my great honor to be the presenter of the award to Fred, along with Myrick Robbins (right) Director of the Sturgis Hall of Fame Museum. Photos by Rod Olson/Noxbox Photography

S

omething that made this year’s Sturgis Rally extra special for me was presenting Fred Fox with the 2018 Sturgis Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award at the awards breakfast in Deadwood. I’ve known Fred for more than forty years and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of such recognition. If you’ve never heard the story, Fred started his distributing business by himself in 1967 as the only employee with his inventory in his garage. After a few years, he rented a warehouse in Edgerton, WI, hired some people and built LeMans Corporation up from there into the world’s largest motorcycle aftermarket distribution business. Today it includes Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited, Parts Europe, ICON, Z1R, THOR MX, Arctiva, Moose Racing and Moose Utility Division. The Fred Fox I have known through the years is a gambler, but what he bets on is people. In my case, I started a little business in 1990, thinking it would be mostly about publishing motorcycle history books. What got in the way of that plan, however, was an idea I had for a “house” magazine for Fred’s distributing companies, Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and in recent years, Parts Europe.

So I called Fred one day in late-1992 and gave him my idea. He and I put the details together over the phone and everything we agreed to do then is still—25 years later—how we work with LeMans Corporation. A written agreement was never necessary. Speaking of people, something Fred Fox has instilled in the management of his companies is to be good builders of industry relationships. A special feature in this issue—as part of our year-long tribute to Drag Specialties 50th anniversary—is a group of stories about a number of custom builders with a Drag Specialties connection who have made their mark on the sport. I hope you enjoy reading about Arlen, Cory and Zach Ness, Brian Klock, Tank from Tuff Cycle, Don Hotop, Joe Houpt from Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson and Drag Specialties’ own Tom Motzko. These guys are the essence of the classic era of customizing motorcycles in America. ■

As in years past, the rally centered around two key areas. For the riders and general public, the steady schedule of events kept a constant flow of riders going back and forth to the Buffalo Chip Campground and Entertainment area near downtown Sturgis. There are a number of locations with motorcycle trade exhibits, but the big daddy is the exhibit area at

A special moment for the LeMans Corporation this year was when founder and Chairman, Fred Fox received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sturgis Hall of Fame Museum. A Special Ride For Alex In a world filled with so much doubt & to live in a free country that restricts how motorcycles are modified, we felt that riders needed to hear some good news for a change...

F

red Fox’s nephew Alex had a memorable rally this year when he got to ride one of the two bikes seen on the cover of 2018-19 Drag Specialties OldBook. What made that extra special was it was originally the personal bike of his late-father, Stan Fox, who was a noted Indy 500 and USAC Midget race driver. ■

NEWS EVENTS Mees Dominates Series into the Final Stretch DRAG SPECIALTIES RIDER CLOSE TO CHAMPIONSHIP Photos by Scott Hunter/American Flat Track Incidentally, the win at the 72nd annual Peoria TT that put Wiles in that position was pretty cool for the rider known as “King Henry.” It was his 14th consecutive victory at the legendary race. This bumps him ahead of seven-time Grand National Champion Chris Carr for the most AFT wins at the track. The Black Hills Half-Mile is always a crowd pleaser. Held during the height of the Sturgis Rally, this races features one of the fastest half-miles on the AFT circuit. Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees made sure to make the most of it by earning a win after a battle with rider Jeffrey Carver Jr.

W

hen we last left Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees, he was still slugging his way through the season, making some records, working towards breaking others, and bee-lining his way toward another championship title. With a record like that for the 2018 season, why would the Grand National Champion slow down? Mees now enters the home stretch with 10 wins out of 12 races, and only four more races to go. As of press time he was leading rider Henry Wiles by 92 points (305-213), a range that actually makes Wiles the sole rider remaining with even a remote mathematical chance of preventing Mees from taking the Grand National Champion title for the second year running. Spread across the remaining races in the 2018 lineup are 100 points left in play.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

With that win in New York, Mees had completed the flat track Grand Slam, winning a Mile, Half-Mile, Short Track and TT all in the same season. This also ties him with the legendary Ricky Graham for his 39th win of his career. In the first week of August, the whole American Flat Track show traveled to the Black Hills of South Dakota for some back-to-back racing during the 78th annual Sturgis Rally. He landed a runner-up finish at the second running of the Buffalo Chip TT, but made up for the slight stumble two days later at the Black Hills Half-Mile in Rapid City, SD. At what’s dubbed the fast half-mile on the circuit, Mees battled with rider Jeffrey Carver Jr. (also on an Indian Scout FTR750) over the course of 25 laps, managing to take control of the lead over the final handful of laps before his hardfought win at the checkers.

Black Hills HarleyDavidson co-owner and general manager Terry Rymer is interviewed before the start of the Black Hills Half-Mile. Rymer is a die-hard flat track fan and avid supporter and backer of the race.

Throughout the 25 laps of the race, Mees (No. 1) and Carver (No. 23) worked a battle of aggression and finesse in the run for the finish line. Mees took it, but not without a fight, with a scant lead of 0.032 seconds.

16

Prior to Peoria, Mees racked up an impressive lineup of victories, starting with a commanding win at the OKC Mile in June. He followed this up with a win at the Indian Motorcycle Lima Half-Mile, and then another victory at the Harley-Davidson New York Short Track at the Weedsport Speedway.

It was his 26th Half-Mile victory of his career, moving him into a tie with Will Davis for second most in AFT history. “Oh man, it was a fantastic race … I didn’t feel the strongest earlier on, but during the Heat and Semi we showed some good speed,” Mees said after his dogfight with Carver. “I knew the Main was going to be tough. Carver is always

fast, but he seemed to struggle a little in the Semi, so I was expecting to battle with some other guys in the Main. But Carver got a good start and he was riding so good. It was everything I could do pull the win off today. It felt good. To win ’em this close is awesome.” ■

Mostly stock and totally V-twin, Biltwell nevertheless believed that racing Harley's loved and loathed four-cam street cruiser across Baja was a good idea. Those at the NORRA Mexican 1000 weren’t so sure.

An enormous 65-tooth final drive sprocket tamed the savage torque Harley's V-twin could generate, but it kept top-end cruising well below 60 mph.

Biltwell Does Baja A TERRIBLE IDEA, PERFECTLY EXECUTED Photos by Geoff Kowalchuk

M

ost two-wheeled enthusiasts know Biltwell as a driving force in today’s custom motorcycle scene. The company’s helmets are popular with the new generation of bike rider, and its bolt-on accessories helped build today’s less-is-more chopper aesthetic. What many people don’t know is how deep the company’s roots run off-road. Biltwell co-founders Harold McGruther and Bill Bryant earned their two-wheeled stripes in the Florida sand and California deserts during their respective childhoods, decades before either man hit the streets. “My roots in off-road racing go pretty deep,” Bryant says. “I’ve pitted or driven for desert teams since 1983, so Baja is in my blood.” In 2017 during a spectating adventure at the Baja 1000, Bryant convinced some co-workers and friends to do the impossible – compete against purpose-built KTMs, Hondas and Huskys on a well-prepped, but essentially bone-stock Harley-Davidson XL883 Sportster at the 2018 NORRA Mexican 1000.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

OCTOBER 2018

“Rouser” Rob to The Rescue Biltwell enlisted the services of long-time chopper builder and legendary surf bum “Rouser” Rob Galan from Texas to lead the challenge. “We knew the combined 1,300 miles from Ensenada to Cabo would take its toll,” Bryant says. “It’s a five-day rally, so we built or bought back-up parts for practically everything – wheels, foot controls, bars, shocks, swingarms, you name it.” They even brought along a donor bike should they need a new engine. To maintain the stock appearance of the race machine, dubbed the Frijole 883, Biltwell’s bike retained its swingarm, tank, rear fender and oil bag. When “Rouser”, Bryant and Biltwell’s product manager Erik Westergaard were finished chopping and modifying, the weight of the donor bike dropped nearly 50 pounds. After adding navigation, a road book, miscellaneous rider aids and safety equipment, tools, spares, extra fuel, and food, the Frijole’s weight plumped up to 500 pounds.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Over 1,000 miles of savage off-road riding and approximately 300 miles of poorly paved transit routes separated the start and finish lines. Team Biltwell and their trusty XL covered every inch with nary a glitch.

After months of testing and shakedown runs, Bryant says the bike was surprisingly capable for a bike never designed for that kind of abuse. “Hotter cams might have made it easier to wheelie over obstacles,” he adds, “but we opted for reliability and serviceability over pure performance.”

To Finish First, First you Must Finish With simply finishing being the company’s goal, the other three riders on Biltwell’s four-man team agreed to run the Sportster below its threshold to keep repairs after each stage to a minimum. Attacking the race in this fashion slowed them down, Bryant reckons, but he is also convinced it saved the modified street

Team Biltwell comprised five guys on a mission: Team leader Bill Bryant, mechanic “Rouser” Rob Galan, BMX pro Chris "Mad Dog" Moeller, Biltwell marketing maven Otto Deutsch, and product design/suspension guru Erik Westergaard.

cruiser from catastrophic failure. According to McGruther, who manned the chase truck, Bill’s tortoise-and-hare strategy worked perfectly – several race-prepped Huskies and KTMs tapped out while Biltwell’s Frijole kept chugging along. Remarkably, the Frijole 883 beat all odds, and on day five in Cabo, Bryant and his bad idea crossed the finish line in one piece. The Biltwell Frijole XL883 finished 14th out of 21 Modern Class machines, a stellar achievement when you consider the 18-year-old V-twin’s competition. Today Biltwell’s battle-tested Sportster enjoys a well-earned rest in the company’s showroom. “It smells like rotten fish and stale beer,” Bill says, “but it gives everyone who sees it a big smile.” ■

EVOLUTION OF THE FATBOOK CUSTOMS WORDS FROM THE BUILDERS

A

FatBook cover bike is more than a well-coordinated assemblage of parts, it’s a muse.

It’s there to inspire, to impress and to excite. It’s a window into the whole of the products within those Drag Specialties catalogs, a legendary lineup of everything needed to build anything possible. The same stands true for every custom bike that Drag Specialties and a select number of dealers and customizers have built to showcase at events and rallies throughout the year. It all started back when Fred Fox bought Drag Specialties back in 1988. According to Drag’s product master, Tom Motzko, they were looking for a way to market the company and the products it carried and manufactured. They eventually focused on working with well-known builders to create ground-up customs that really let those product lines pop. “It was good for the builders, it was good for us and it added credibility to what we were doing,” Motzko recalls. Over the years, the nature of the builds evolved as the market and styles changed. While they started out creating customs loaded with fabricated parts, they started to trend toward more realistic bikes and a more DIY ethos, something a customer or dealer could do with the FatBook or OldBook, some serviceable garage skills and a decent set of tools. There’s still plenty of thought and planning that go into that design and parts list; after all a custom bike has to look cool and perform. Nowadays, however, those bikes serve as the starting point for dealers and customers alike when considering the possibilities.

24

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

OCTOBER 2018

“It’s not only a marketing tool, it’s also done to create enthusiasm, spark interest and fire up the imagination,” Motzko says. “Motorcycles are fun. Let’s get excited about what we do.” This approach allows customers to be open to borrow ideas, one part at a time, and to modify them to match their preferences and styles. From fender to taillight, and all points in-between, there are a myriad upgrades possible for building the perfect bike. “We’re trying to stir the emotions about motorcycling and individualizing bikes. We’re trying to give a guy ideas, and ultimately get him to buy parts out of the catalog,” Motzko says with a laugh. Motzko says the FatBook cover bikes are a symbol of what’s possible with Drag Specialties. For the 2018 catalog, it was the 50th anniversary special Road King customized by the team at Ray Price Harley-Davidson. In 2017 it was a hot rod Dyna decked out with an FXRT fairing and a bass-boat paint job. Other years have seen a full Dresser, a garage-built Sportster and a trimmed down Bobber. “What I’m trying to tell a dealer and the sales reps is that cover bike represents the diversity of our company’s product line,” he says. “I’d like to think it really says something about our company, that we’re forward thinking, that we understand the V-twin motorcycle market, that we’re bikers and that we get it.” Here is the handful of builders that Drag Specialties has worked with over the years to set the tone for its custom bike program. Each one offered up a clear vision, and lent plenty of inspiration, to their two-wheeled creations. The FatBook cover bikes and other customs built by Drag Specialties and a select group of legendary customizers serve as a timeline of changing custom styles and aesthetics.

here was no thunderous clap in the heavens, nor did the earth shake beneath our feet the day that Drag Specialties signed Arlen Ness Enterprises as a marquee vendor. That was back in the late 1980s, and it was business as usual even though Fred Fox and Arlen Ness had just agreed to, in marketing parlance, join both companies at the hip. With the marketing wheels in motion, Drag’s new FatBook (conceived shortly after the Drag/Ness union) slowly began featuring more and more parts numbers that carried the Ness name. Through that process, the custom motorcycle market shifted ever so slightly on its axis; a new age dawned, and to celebrate the occasion Arlen built a full-on custom, called Drag-Ness, to showcase the union between the two companies. “That bike received a lot of attention,” recalls Cory Ness, who today is president of Arlen Ness Enterprises. Back in the mid 1990s the Ness name – at the time consisting solely of Arlen and Cory as Ness bike builders – needed no introduction with people within the industry, yet the names “Drag” and “Ness” were boldly emblazoned on Arlen’s stunning and rather curvaceous bike, confirming once and for all that the two companies were tackling the custom bike market together. Several years later lightning struck again when Cory built Drag Ness II, a bike based on a Ness Y2K frame that marked the beginning of a new decade, century and millennium. Like Drag Ness, Cory’s custom featured Ness and Drag Specialties products found in the FatBook. Soon other bike builders and custom-bike enthusiasts followed the lead as the new millennium’s first decade boasted an explosion of ground-up builds across the custom bike landscape. However, the economic recession of 2008 had a dire effect on people buying or building their own custom motorcycles, so once again the industry shifted slightly on its axis. Arlen Ness Enterprises shifted with it, and part of the company’s rethink was to enlist new blood, literally and figuratively, with Cory’s son Zach joining the company. Like a three-pronged triton, Arlen Ness Enterprises poked and prodded at the custom bike industry, with young Zach riding point this time when he teamed with Drag Specialties to customize a 2009 FXDF Dyna Fat Bob for promotional purposes. It also became clear who, in the custom bike market, Zach took aim at. Boasting primarily bolt-on components, Zach’s

custom Dyna reflected a new attitude in custom bike building and soon Dynas with similar styling treatments were spotted on roads across America. It helped, too, that the used-bike market was chock full of preowned Dynas carrying low price tags. Affordability became a key factor for an emerging group of younger bike enthusiasts, and a whole new category of customizing spawned a new movement within the industry. “The Dyna market remains big, due to affordability,” Cory says. “It’s a good way for young guys to get into the Harley market.” Indeed, and many of those young buyers are equipping their bikes with, what Cory terms, “custom performance” products. Things like aftermarket exhausts and air filters, tuner kits, even recalibrated suspension for improved handling, top the list. Cory points out that in fact Ness’s largest-selling products currently are its custom air filters. “They’re affordable, they help improve the engine’s performance,” Cory notes, “and they look good on the bike.” No doubt, the custom bike market will continue to re-invent itself as it evolves with the times. Expect even more changes and styling fads to come and go as the years roll on. What’s next? Could be anything. In fact, Cory said that he wouldn’t be surprised “to see chrome make a comeback.” And when, not if, it does, remember that you first read about it here.

reative people can be a curious lot, sometimes exhibiting a thought process unlike that of most other people. That can be especially true among the more creative bike builders in America. They say things like, “Oh, we’ll cut and weld it here, grind a little off there, splice in a section at this end, and we can form some curves to loop around into the top half before we take it to paint.” Jargon like that makes perfect sense to the bike builder, whose mind is moving with the rapidity of a pneumatic impact driver, but for many of us ordinary mortals who happen to love riding custom motorcycles, it’s lingo that might as well be Greek. We don’t necessarily comprehend the builder’s full mind set and words, but we certainly appreciate the end results of the builder’s talents. Tank is one of those talented bike builders who speaks in the creative-thinker’s dialect. He’s often so casual about what he does, you wonder if he could work in his sleep. One bike builder fittingly described Tank as a “paint and design guy with ridiculous amounts of fabrication skills.” Our exposé on Tank and his business, Tuff Cycle, could end there and it would suffice to describe him and his long association with the custom bike business in general and Drag Specialties in particular. But there’s more to Tank, and we should begin with his name, because that’s how he prefers people address him – simply as Tank. And from the man himself, we learn this, “My father was the one who first started calling me Tank. He said I weighed 13 pounds when I was born.” Tank pauses to let that slight exaggeration sink in before continuing, “I got a brother named Fender, so how’s that?” That’s pretty funny, Tank, and with that his tone turns serious. “My father owned a body repair shop for cars, and that’s

where I learned how to modify and customize bikes. My first custom was in 1976. It was a Sportster,” he says. “Of course, everybody starts with a Sportster, don’t they?” Again, a little more lighthearted humor from the man with one name. Tank’s association with Drag Specialties began back in the mid 1990s when he was asked to build a custom bike for the FatBook. He recalls that it was a green-and-white Softail, and that project led to him signing on as a Drag Specialties dealer a year or so later. But first and foremost Tank is a creative guy with a true passion for building bikes, not just selling parts. And over the years Tank, through Tuff Cycle, has built or painted probably more custom bikes for Drag Specialties than any other builder. His favorite bike that he built sporting the Drag logo? “That’s a tough one,” says the man from Tuff Cycle. “They were all fun.” Tank’s words aren’t a cop out, either. This man truly loves what he does, and who among custom bike builders and owners doesn’t enjoy tinkering in the shop where we can fawn over a lump of metal that one day morphs into a striking and unique custom motorcycle? Whether we speak the builder’s lingo or stumble through life trying to decipher what these metal masters have to say, we all can appreciate what rolls out of their shops and into the light of day. And with Tank, that daylight mysteriously fills his shop on a 24/7 basis. That’s because every custom bike he’s made has looked as appealing in its raw, unfinished state as it has after Tank blesses it with another one of his striking, masterful paint jobs. That’s a language we all understand.

THE LAST DETAIL / DON HOTOP / FORT MADISON, IA peak with anybody in the custom bike industry who knows Don Hotop and you’ll probably hear words describing a soft-spoken man who’s among the nicest people in the business. You might also hear that when it comes to building a custom bike nobody is more thorough than the tall, gentle man from Iowa. About 20 years ago that attention to detail created a rather awkward situation for Don, who was among the first custom bike builders that Drag Specialties approached to build a cover bike for the annual FatBook catalog. That was back in the early 1990s, and almost immediately the amiable builder from the Midwest gave an enthusiastic, “Yes!” But then reality came crashing down on him when the actual parts were delivered to Don’s shop to begin the project. See, Don is meticulous when it comes to fitting parts on a bike, and he often visits his machine shop to do a little fine-tuning to various components so that the parts fit each other as if they were a single, homogenous piece. “Even though this was going to be a full-on custom, I realized that I had to keep the build within reason, so I couldn’t visit the machine shop as much as I normally would,” Don recalls. “I wanted the guy down the street [aka, the Drag Specialties parts customer] to say, after looking at the bike, ‘Hey, I can do that, too.’” It was like asking Einstein to explain his Theory of Relativity in laymen terms. Could it be done? Turns out, building a top-shelf custom from over-thecounter parts could be done. Don proved it was possible to build a bike based solely on inventory parts that the ordinary custom bike enthusiast could buy. His first FatBook cover bike was as thorough and complete as any of his pervious full-on custom builds, yet it’s straight-

forward construction suggested that it was something that any bike owner armed with basic hand tools could replicate in his own garage. Ever since, that’s been the genius in all of Don’s special builds for Drag Specialties – his bikes boast an unmatched simplicity overshadowed by pure beauty and creativity thanks to his unparalleled attention to detail. It’s the stuff that all Don Hotop bikes boast, and what Drag Specialties customers can expect, too, from their personal home-builds.

DRAG SPECIALTIES 50TH

S

Indeed, the custom bikes that Don has built for Drag Specialties boast something else that’s important to keep in mind. His bikes include the very parts and components that compose his own product line that he sells under the name Don’s Speed & Custom. As you might guess, those same parts appear in the FatBook, too. Access to those and other custom aftermarket parts mean that any Drag Specialties customer can create his or her own custom bike, one that can be similar in concept to what Don builds. Of course, the purpose behind every Drag Specialties project bike like the ones that Don has contributed has been to encourage bike owners to personalize their rides to suit their tastes. More often than not that means completing a build by following the same formula for detail that Don Hotop has put into his Drag Specialties cover bikes during the past 20 or so years. How simple can it get?

T

he initial request back in 2009 was simple enough: Would Suburban Motors (the largest authorized HarleyDavidson dealership in Wisconsin) be interested in loaning Drag Specialties (the largest American V-twin parts distributor in the world) a few bikes for a year-long project? Specifically Drag sought four bikes to be dressed using a whole bunch of cool custom parts, and before you could say “one, two, three, four” the two parties reached an agreement. Joe Houpt, whose official working title at Suburban Motors’ is service manager and whose unofficial co-title carries the words custom project manager, remembers that time well. “Rob Bluma worked for us then, and he pretty much arranged the deal,” recalls Joe. And together he and Rob gathered the various parts from the FatBook to prep the bikes for their debut at the forthcoming Daytona Bike Week, considered the annual kick-off event for the riding and rally season. Since that time Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson has customized more than two dozen bikes for Drag Specialties to use as parts props at shows and bike rallies throughout the year. “We usually don’t see the bikes again until early autumn,” says Joe, indicating that the bikes see a lot of miles while being trucked from one big bike event to the next during the months March through October. The bikes themselves are generally selected from Suburban’s huge pre-owned bike lot, which makes sense because they’re front-line candidates representing a typical Harley owner’s ride. Rob, who now serves as Drag’s Midwest regional sales manager, then huddles with Tom Motzko, Drag’s designated parts guy, and Joe to sort out what parts to use on each of the selected bikes. Joe says that initially the alliance used four bikes per year, but the past few years only two bikes are culled from the herd to serve as the year’s road warriors. “We stick to what parts are in the catalog,” Joe says about the actual customizing, indicating that there’s little if any fabricating of new parts or modifying of existing components. “We’ll

sometimes paint a bike’s lower legs or inner fairing, stuff like that, but usually nothing elaborate in terms of fab work. It’s very similar to what owners might do with their Harleys.” And that’s the beauty about this relationship. It offers Drag Specialties an opportunity to mix and match various vendors’ parts and components to get a better feel for what the average customer might do to their bikes, and use that information to move forward with the actual product marketing. Drag Specialties sales reps also use the opportunity to gain feedback from potential customers who see the bikes up close during the course of the year at various shows and rallies. It’s the kind of feedback and market research you just can’t put a price on. Indeed, these parts-bike specials prove just how enticing a custom motorcycle can be to a potential customer. “One project bike happened to be a used Heritage Softail that had been sitting on the lot for more than a year,” recalls Joe about one incident in particular. “It was cream and turquoise, not very appealing. “We painted it, put on some new parts and ended up with an entirely different bike. When it was returned to us at the end of the year we put it up for sale. It sold within a couple weeks,” he says. “That’s how effective putting the right parts on a bike can be for us.” Joe could have added that investing in some new custom parts can be effective for the average bike owner, too. With careful planning, new parts can transform an ordinary bike into an extraordinary bike. Life doesn’t get much simpler than that. continued on page 30...

THE KLOCK KEEPS KICKING / BRIAN KLOCK / KLOCK WERKS / MITCHELL, SD

I

t’s been said that you can’t take away a man’s memories. And for Brian Klock, 2006 was perhaps one of his most memorable years as a custom bike builder. The year kicked off with the image of a Klock Werks custom bike appearing on the 2006 FatBook catalog cover. That cover bike happened to be a rigid Shovelhead-powered bobber, a bike clean and tidy as a hospital’s sterile operating room, and as cool a ride as you’ll ever see.

“That was a dream year for us,” recalls Klock, the main cog behind Klock Werks. “The year was full of firsts. It was the first year we went to Bonneville where we set a record for world’s fastest bagger, and we were featured on the History Channel’s Biker Build-Off program. And we were on Drag’s FatBook cover.” It was, in effect, a grand slam year for the softspoken man and his company from Mitchell, SD. But the FatBook cover itself happened to be the only place in that year’s catalog that featured anything new from Klock Werks. The small, yet aspiring, company that specialized in building custom bikes had yet to develop any other tangible parts and products for sale. There was no Klock Werks product line to speak of. That was about to change. “Shortly after the 2006 catalog was released I told Tom Motzko that I had some prototypes of products that I wanted to show him. I don’t think he took me too seriously at first, but when I showed up at his doorstep – I packed my car with those prototypes and drove them to his place – he saw them firsthand and realized that I was serious.”

The following year’s FatBook boasted more than a few of those new Klock Werks products, spearheaded by the patented Flare Windshield that Klock and company developed in a NASCAR-based wind tunnel specifically to gain maximum airflow for a Harley-Davidson Bagger’s iconic Bat Wing fairing. In terms of selling motorcycle products, Klock Werks was now on the clock. Since that time Klock Werks’ product line has expanded greatly within the Harley and Indian brand rank and file. Drag customers now can shop for Klock Werks handlebars, stretched or wrap-around fenders, saddlebag extensions, even audio accessories for their bikes and baggers. Those items and plenty more are listed in the FatBook. “They’re the largest distributor, and they get results,” says Brian. And to think that the union between the two figurehead companies started with just that sleek and stylish bobber. A bobber that Klock wouldn’t mind seeing permanently parked in his shop at Mitchell where he could view it any day, every day.

LIVING THE DREAM / TOM MOTZKO / DRAG SPECIALTIES / SPEARFISH, SD

“I

t’s fun having a personalized bike.”

Take a minute – if you even need that much time – to let that statement soak in. They’re words that anyone who owns a motorcycle, be it a brand spanking new Harley-Davidson Bagger or a rusty and dusty old Sportster, appreciates. Now ask yourself this: What’s the first thing you do after you buy a motorcycle? The answer is practically unanimous among us, you ponder your options in ways to make it look more like your bike, that’s what you do. You don’t waste time checking the engine’s vital fluids or adjusting the handlebar to suit your perch in the saddle, nor

do you bother washing the bike, even if it needs a thorough scrubbing. No, none of that — yet. Instead, you stand back to give your newly acquired set of wheels the biker’s patented long, lustful gaze while visualizing precisely how you want that bike to look one day. Hopefully one

day soon, and as bike owners we’ve all experienced the gaze.

He’s been doing that for a few decades now, and in the course of a single year, Tom’s eyes pass over more custom bike parts than most people see in a lifetime. If it’s to be found in the FatBook or OldBook, then Tom has helped scrutinize, analyze and categorize that part many times over. Tom also happens to be a bike builder, although he’s the first to admit that he’s not a builder at the same level as Don Hotop or the Ness trio or his good friend Tank. “I guess you might say that I’m a competent builder,” reflects Tom, “but certainly not in the league of builders that supply us with our catalog bikes.” Yet Tom is in the enviable position to lay claim to having built several bikes that bear the Drag Specialties moniker, or happened to be featured in the FatBook catalog or at dealer and consumer shows. Here’s the best part about Tom’s bike builds – he completed each build in his home garage, using parts gleaned from the FatBook. It’s a script followed by countless Drag Specialties customers around the world. Now for further disclosure. “Actually,” admits Tom, “the bikes aren’t mine. They belong to Drag Specialties. I just happen

to be in a position to customize them. I’ve built about half a dozen for Drag in my garage.”

DRAG SPECIALTIES 50TH

Now let’s get back to that opening statement. The man behind those words is Drag Specialties’ own Tom Motzko, who happens to be involved with the company’s product planning, too.

That garage, by the way, has room enough for about three and a half cars, his trusty tools and bike lift, plus one wall heater. See, Tom lives in Spearfish, SD, where winter can come early and stay late. So which of his bikes does Drag Specialties’ number one parts man favor the most? “I’d have to say both Sportsters that I’ve built for Drag,” he says, with a deciding finger pointing to the distressed green one as his absolute favorite. His reasoning is simple, too. “They both have a funk about them,” he explains. “I feel there’s some creative styling using the right parts mix to make it happen for each bike.” In short, Tom tackles his garage-built projects in the same manner that he expects a typical Drag Specialties customer will do, so he anticipates a similar outcome, too. Whether it’s planned or not, that approach gives him and other parts buyers at the corporate office broader insight into what Drag’s dealers, and ultimately its customers, seek when shopping for their parts. It’s a rather basic, yet astonishingly thorough, market research program. That’s the business end to these particular builds. At the end of the day it’s simply about one man – Tom Motzko – doing what we all enjoy doing, and that’s living the bike-building dream. For all of us, each dream begins with a bike, its owner, and a catalog. ■

An FXRT might be hard to find but a 2016 FLD Switchback isn’t. Add a Russ Wernimont fairing, a Klock Werks Flare windshield and a handful of other FatBook offerings and everything good about that classic Harley-Davidson is right there, better than ever.

“All those requests from those younger guys got us thinking,” Burke says. It also got he and the techs at Burke’s to take a good, long look at something that, with a little work, just might scratch that FXRT itch riders have. It was that often-overlooked model in Harley’s lineup of recent years, the FLD Dyna Switchback. “That Switchback model has an awful lot of what the FXRT offered back in the day,” he says. “It’s a lightweight, sportoriented Harley and, with removable saddlebags and windshield, a pretty versatile bike. Strip those bags and the windshield off and the Switchback’s a tough, good-looking little cruiser. Put them back on and you’ve got yourself a pretty competent touring machine.”

and really transform a Harley, all done with bolt-ons, of course, and requiring only minimal special fabrication. That was the case with this Switchback. As close as the Switchback is to classic FXRT territory, bringing this largely mis-understood Harley (often viewed as a Road King-lite) all the way there didn’t require much. The one change making the biggest difference was the substitution of an authentic-in-appearance FXRT fairing from Russ Wernimont Designs for the Switchback’s OE windshield.

That RWD reproduction fairing was bolted onto the Switchback with RWD’s custom-modified mounting hardware, and topped off here with a 9-inch Klock Werks Flare in Dark Smoke. “To my eye, and to most everyone else who’s seen this bike,” Burke says, “that fairing looks better here than it does on most other Dynas. It just seems to fit this model perfectly. It’s a home run.” The Burke’s crew put on a tall LA Choppers 1-inch BMX handlebar in black, set on Biltwell’s 12-inch Murdock riser. There were some fabricated parts used here, such as the custom-made filler panel behind the fairing. Otherwise, the FatBook played a heavy role in this build.

That, along with LED lighting from Custom Dynamics, just about wrapped up the add-ons. “As we figured at the start, it didn’t take much to bring this bike to where we wanted it,” Burke says. “I should make note of the new exhaust, though. No doubt, like Darin Burke, you’ve taken note of the current interest in Dyna-model Harleys. Younger riders love ‘em, and the FXRs that came before them. The FXRT Sport Glide is a particular darling, but good luck finding the right one at the right price. A worked-over Switchback, however? It’s a classic Harley from a few years back with more performance, better handling, and modern mechanicals and electrics. Heck, the right one might even have some factory warranty still on it. Next stop? The FatBook. ■

WINTER PREP

Winter is Coming Motorcycle Storage Prep

With winter storage just around the corner, Drag Specialties’ line of protective covers are a good option for your customers’ motorcycles.

N

o rider looks forward to the day when a motorcycle has to be put away for the winter, but dealers can at least help them prepare for it with a range of products from Drag Specialties.

Battery chargers are a must during winter storage, and Drag Specialties has three options that keep 12V leadacid batteries at capacity. The OptiMate 1 global battery charger has the unique OptiMate maintenance program, which tests the battery and delivers only what it needs to maintain the charge. The OptiMate 3 global battery charger can diagnose a sulfated battery condition, and its automatic hourly tests provide advance warning of any problems. It is able to recover a neglected battery that has as low as two volts of charge. The OptiMate 6 is a premium battery charger, with the ability to save batteries from as low as 0.5 volts. The charger can recognize the difference between a discharged battery that simply needs to be charged and a dead, sulfated battery. Proper winter storage also means taking care of the fluids inside the motorcycle with an oil change and fuel stabilizer. Drag Specialties has fully synthetic and standard oil blends. Choices like the 80W-90 and 85W-140 transmission oils are recommended for Harley-Davidson Big Twins. Meanwhile, SAE 50, 60 and 70 oils are recommended for Pre-Evolution V-twin engines, with the 70 weight ideal for well-worn engines with a lot of miles on them.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Of course, Drag Specialties has filters go to with the oils. The Drag spin-on oil filters are high-quality, dependable replacements for all Harley-Davidson models, providing easy installation and removal. Riders who want even more protection for their engine can opt for the magnetic ring oil filter. Those chrome filters include built-in pressure relief valves and a magnetic ring in the center to capture small particles of loose metal. You can also find six options for fuel stabilizer in the Tire & Service catalog. Designed to clean as well as protect, each stabilizer variety from Drag Specialties will keep an engine’s system clean while stabilizing the fuel for the winter break, preventing any nasty surprises in the spring. Once all of those internal components are squared away, all that remains is to add a protective cover, and Drag Specialties has four sizes. The Chopper cover is ideal for custom high-neck models with extended forks, and a liner down the center keeps the handlebars and paint protected. The Medium cover is designed for XL and Buell models, while the Large cover fits Softails, Dynas and custom bikes that do not have a high neck. Dresser models will fit under the Extra-large cover, even with a Tour Pak. All of Drag’s covers are made of a vented, durable black urethane-coated polyester fabric with double-stitched seams. A plush fabric liner in the handlebar area adds extra protection, as does the elasticized bottom with grommets. ■

Keeping a bike’s battery and fuel system healthy during storage is a snap with chargers and fuel stabilizers from Drag Specialties.

44

Changing out a motorcycle’s oil and filter is always a good plan when prepping a bike for storage.

assani Xhaust has Dual Fishtails for the 2018 Heritage and Deluxe model Softails. With their classic look, classic sound and Bassani performance these are exhausts riders will want to see.

Bassani now has Dual Fishtails for the 2018 Harley-Davidson Heritage and Deluxe model Softails.

Anyone with a Heritage or Deluxe model Harley-Davidson chose their bike for a reason. Sure, the mechanicals are all new and for 2018 there’s even MilwaukeeEight power, but outwardly these bikes have a not so subtle look that’s reminiscent of Harleys from decades past. That’s the allure here and a set of bright-looking, bright-sounding Dual Fishtail is a perfect addition. It was a popular move back in the day and just as popular today. Bassani is offering three different lengths, two different muffler sizes and the choice of baffles or not, so there’s a system to satisfy all tastes. Bassani’s Dual Fishtails are available in 33-inch, 36-inch and 39-inch lengths and all three have the choice of 17/8-inch muffler bodies or 2¼-inch mufflers. The smaller 1 7/8-inch versions are all non-baffled and the 2¼inch mufflers can be used with or without baffles. For maximum performance all the systems use 1¾-inch headers, and the included heatshields match up with the muffler bodies, especially nicely with the 2 ¼-inch versions. Everything’s a no-hassle fit, installation is easy and everything needed to put the system in place is included. It doesn’t stop there. Bassani also has Dual Fishtail systems and slip-ons for many of the Harley Touring and Softail models. They’re available with or without baffles, with choices of muffler length and diameter and the look is spot on. Bassani’s been building Fishtails for a while. They know how it’s supposed to be done.

Bagger-application Fishtail slip-ons match right up with stock Harley head pipes or Bassani head pipes. Two lengths are available, 33-inch long mufflers or 36-inches, and both are offered with or without baffles. Dual Fishtail systems for the Softails have two fitments available, one for Softails from 1989 to 2006 and another for the 2007 and later models. Both are available with the choice of 30-inch, 33-inch or 36-inch mufflers in the 2¼inch diameter versions. There are 30-inch, 33-inch 36- and 39-inch mufflers for the non-baffled 17/8-inch diameter mufflers bodies. ■

Saddlebag Sounds Complete Speaker Lid Kits

Hogtunes designed and engineered its range of saddlebag speaker lid kits to provide optimal sound and style. They’re also durable and are able to stand up against the elements, and tough use.

D

esigning a motorcycle speaker that tucks safely inside the fairing is one thing, but designing a saddlebag speaker is another matter entirely.

Not only does the speaker have to produce quality sound, but it also needs to do so while getting inundated with highway-speed winds, all without leaking when it rains or when the bike gets washed. For Hogtunes, the solution was to engineer an entire saddlebag lid to get optimal sound and style while keeping things dry inside the saddlebag. Hogtunes offers saddlebag speaker lid kits for 1998-2013 Touring models (p/n 4405-0289) and 2014-current models (p/n 4405-0393). Each kit contains a pair of saddlebag lids with 6x9” 200 watt, 2 ohm speakers, plus the grills, gaskets, striker plates, grommets, wiring harness, and required hardware. The wiring harness plugs into any current Hogtunes or other make amp, and the lids accept OEM aftermarket latches. The only thing missing from the kit is the paint, and everything disassembles easily to make that step easier.

Hogtunes also designed a version of the saddlebags lids without speakers. These feature the same sturdy grill material, and are made to the same exacting standards.

Drag Specialties also carries a version of the saddlebag lids without speakers, both for the 1998-2013 models (p/n 4405-0290) and the 2014 and up applications (p/n 4405-0427). The team at Hogtunes spent over a year designing and refining each of the saddlebag lid kits. One of the most important aspects for them was durability. As Hogtunes owner/president Mike “Pez” Pesdirz says, “Because we ride, the thing we see all the time is that when passengers get on and off the bike, they’re constantly hitting the top of the saddlebag lid itself and scuffing the paint. So one of the things we did is we made our grills boot-worthy by making the grill material 1mm thick.” The lids themselves are made of a high-impact ABS plastic. For the lids, the construction process is just as important as the material itself. When the molten plastic is injected into the molds for the saddlebag lids, the hydraulic pressure is between 500 and 1,100 tons. This ensures that the lid comes out looking picture-perfect and that it fits precisely onto the OEM saddlebags. Dealers will not have to undergo hours of bodywork modifications to make everything fit correctly. Temperature was also taken into consideration for the lids. Hogtunes has a test facility in Phoenix, AZ., so they know what it’s like to ride in hot weather. To ensure that the lids would not distort in high heat, they are designed to withstand temperatures greater than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. ■

or LA Choppers, size does matter, especially when it comes to handlebar height. To make it easier for riders to get the exact customized look they want, LA Choppers has a huge range of risers and top clamps. There are various designs and applications, three different finishes and height ranges from 1 inch to 6 inches. For Touring models from 1999 to current, LA Choppers has handlebar clamp sets that fit under the stock cover. The clamps are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, and have a raw finish. The pieces are already tapped for drilling and handlebar installation, and the FL applications include options for handlebars with a diameter of 1 inch, 1¼ inches and 1½ inches.

risers have a hidden hardware design for a unique, clean style. They are also available in heights 1½ inches, 3 inches, 4 inches, 5½ inches (with a 1¾-inch pullback) or 6 inches. Check the FatBook and OldBook for the full range of LA Choppers riser and clamp kits, which also include square column riser kits, brass riser kits, Springer handlebar riser kits and Fusion handlebar riser kits. The Fusion kits are ornately CNC machined for a unique blend of function and art. All of the parts are made in the USA. Typically, new risers from 1-inch to 3-inches tall can be installed without requiring any wiring changes. The stock cables can still be used, so a riser offers an instant upgrade in looks and riding position.

LA Choppers has a huge range of risers and top clamps, a lineup that will allow your customers to find exactly what works for them.

Riders get a lot of choices with LA Choppers solid handlebar riser/top clamp kits, which give a height boost of 1½ inches, 3 inches, 4 inches, 5½ inches (with a 1¾inch pullback) or 6 inches. The kit, which includes two risers and a top clamp, will fit handlebars with a 1-inch clamping area. In addition to the height, customers also get a choice of finish, with the option of chrome, gloss black or flat black powdercoated. Pro Pipe 2-into-1 for the 2018 Milwaukee-Eight Softail

T

he Vance & Hines power-building Pro Pipe 2-into-1 is available for direct-fitment on the 2018 Softails with Milwaukee-Eight power. More performance exhausts for the Milwaukee-Eight bikes include big 4-inch Daytona slip-ons for the 2017 and 2018 Touring-model Harley-Davidsons. And, to complete these free-flowing packages there are new VO2 High-Flow intake kits for those Milwaukee-Eight powered Harleys along with Fuelpak FP3 custom-mapping systems to dial it all in. It’s all Vance & Hines, it’s all available now and Drag Specialties has it. A Pro Pipe 2-into-1 for the 2018 Milwaukee-Eight Softail is the latest evolution in Vance & Hines dyno-tested and race-proven 2-into-1 technology. These are performance pipes featuring tunedlength headers that merge into a carefully designed and engineered collector that feeds into an equally unique steppeddesign 4½-inch megaphone muffler.

Fuelpak FP3

These are good looking pipes, too, featuring a sharp Vprofile header, distinctive collector heat shield and that massive 4 ½-inch stepped megaphone. Performance-wise the super-scavenging design of the Pro Pipe provides both volume and velocity for the exhaust flow, the result being a significant power increase and a broad, usable powerband with plenty of torque. The Pro Pipe in those 2018 Softail applications comes in a chrome or black finish. They are also available with Quiet or Competition baffles to fine-tune their sound. Vance & Hines has Daytona 400 slip-ons for riders with Milwaukee-Eight Touring bikes. They feature big 4-inch mufflers with a deep, aggressive tone, a hearty bigbike sound to go with the big-bike look of the Daytona 400s and their CNC taper-machined billet end caps. That aggressive exhaust note comes with a nice performance kick and the choice of chrome of black muffler bodies. It should be noted that the bodies fit with both stock saddlebags and custom saddlebags with extended skirts. Milwaukee-Eight riders swapping exhaust components like these will want an equally free-flowing/ performance design intake to go with them. Vance & Hines has the VO2 Naked intake system and there are applications for all those 2018 Softails and the 2017 and 2018 Touring models.

Cockpit Components for Custom Builds

Ape hangers are enduring favorites among big twin customizers, and Biltwell’s quiver is extensive. Shown here is its biggest ape hanger bar attached to the popular Thunder riser.

Utility mirrors fit select stock and aftermarket Harley-Davidson lever perches using a simple button cap Allen bolt. They are also available with a CNC-machined billet alloy P-clamp for custom installation.

Biltwell Utility mirrors for custom motorcycles are available in two shapes – round and rectangular – and in chrome or matte black powdercoated finishes.

Biltwell’s single-cable Whiskey throttle is available in 7/8-inch and 1-inch sizes. The Whiskey throttle tube is also available separately for installing Biltwell grips on stock Harley hand controls.

B

ecause its classic helmets and headgear enjoy such a big share of the retro/modern motorcycle scene, some people might think Biltwell is no longer the innovative player in the bolt-on game that launched the brand in 2006.

Biltwell’s grip line comprises five styles and five colors, and is available in two sizes for 7/8-inch and 1-inch handlebars. Installing Biltwell grips on stock Harley hand controls requires retrofitting the maker’s Whiskey throttle tube, available separately.

Biltwell cockpit components include everything your customers need to customize the command center on both modern and vintage Harley-Davidsons – bars, risers, grips, throttles and mirrors.

Think again. This year alone Biltwell has introduced more than two dozen new handlebar SKU’s for custom bikes – everything from smooth and dimpled to throttle-by-wire styles for late-model Harley-Davidsons. To complement the company’s bar offerings, Biltwell also makes risers, throttles, grips and mirrors; everything your customers need to build a custom chopper cockpit from scratch. ■

CVO Boost

Pistons for Harley-Davidson’s High-End Ride

V

-Twin enthusiasts were anxious to twist the throttle when Harley-Davidson released its Milwaukee-Eight engine platform in 2017. Since then, that power plant has been introduced in a number of motorcycles, in a standard, oil-cooled version and a Twin-Cooled model. The Milwaukee-Eight also powers Harley’s new CVO line, a range of bikes getting a lot of attention of late for their style and fully loaded features. The Twin-Cooled engine in those CVO bikes is a plenty powerful V-twin offered from the factory, with 117 cubic inches and Screamin’ Eagle cylinder heads. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement. More power with retained reliability is a common desire among Harley owners, especially when it comes to the added weight of Baggers.

Wiseco Black edition pistons deliver improved wear resistance and reliability to match the increased power. They feature two proprietary coatings – ArmorX and ArmorFit. Wiseco’s ArmorX coating comes from a proprietary electrochemical process that uses high strength materials to create an armor-like coating on the piston dome and ring grooves. This provides resistance to extreme heat and detonation, as well as to ring microwelding. The patented Wiseco ArmorFit skirt coating is a product of in-house R&D. Wiseco mixes the ArmorFit formula inhouse, and uses a patented process to permanently apply this moly based dry film to the piston skirt. The result is the piston operates quieter and smoother than stock, with reduced friction throughout operation. During engine motion, the coating will adapt and actually fit itself to the bore, eliminating the need to measure

clearance with the purchase of the correct bore size, or worry about noise and wear that comes from piston rock with some traditional style pistons.

The 117-inch found in the CVO bikes is a stroked version of the standard Milwaukee-Eight, which is how the extra displacement and power is achieved. Drop in a set of Wiseco Black Edition pistons, and your customers will get a bump in compression to 11:1 – a nice little power boost.

Completing the Black Edition package are augmented ring lands, dedicated ring packs and high-tension oil rings.

These Black Edition pistons work with both standard Milwaukee-Eight heads and Screamin’ Eagle heads. Should any of your Harley customers decide they want to go with a bigger bore size on their CVO engine, CVO Black Edition pistons are also available in overbore sizes of 121 inches and 128 inches.

The CVO Black Edition pistons are also a great option for customers with non-CVO models who stroke standard Milwaukee-Eight engines to match or exceed displacement of the factory 117-inch models. ■

Thanks to the very competitive pricing of Drag Specialties branded slip-on mufflers, it can also be a way for a rider on a budget to make a big upgrade without spending big bucks. The newest slip-on option from Drag Specialties is a 4-inch muffler with a billet aluminum end cap. The cap is coated with black ceramic for style as well as years of durability. The body of the muffler is available in chrome or a black ceramic-coated finish that matches the end caps. The mufflers will fit the 1995-2018 Touring models, so it is an ideal way to give any year FL model a nice update. The muffler body is made of a strong 16-gauge steel tubing, resulting in a quality slip-on that will last for a lot of years and miles. Inside, a louvered core boosts performance as well as providing an aggressive tone. Everything has been dyno-tuned for maximum performance, so the muffler swap will result in a power boost. The 4-inch slip-on mufflers are brand new, which means they can be found in the 2018 OldBook/FatBook Update catalog.

Every Drag Specialties slip-on muffler arrives in the familiar Drag Packaging. The blue, black and white boxes are designed to look good, making them display-ready for dealers, while conveying information to the customer in a simple, at-a-glance format. ■

New Generation

Parts That Appeal to Younger Riders

Thrashin’ Supply’s lineup of parts and accessories are aimed specifically at today’s younger V-twin rider. Smaller luggage, performance-driven handlebars, and other parts are all designed for this new breed of action sports-raised, hard-charging bike riders.

L

ance Coury got his first Harley-Davidson when he was a teenager. By the time he was in his 20s, he was making custom parts for himself and his friends. Not only did that turn into Coury’s business, Thrashin Supply, but it also gave him a unique perspective on younger riders in the V-twin scene. Coury estimates that his average customer is about 35 years old, and plenty of Thrashin Supply customers are still in their 20s. Those riders may not have the budget to buy a brand-new Harley, but they can pick up a used bike and add to it over time.

For someone who grew up on dirt, riding a streetbike provides instant gratification, he explains. He started racing motocross at 4 years old, eventually becoming a freestyle motocross rider and X-Games competitor, earning Gold and Bronze X-Games medals. But riding motocross was an all-day affair, with most of the time dedicated to loading up, driving an hour or more to a track, and then coming home again. Company founder Lance Coury knows his audience. The former freestyle motocross rider and X-Games Gold Medalist approaches Harley riding with the same intensity as he did off-road riding.

“My brand is growing, and a lot of other similar brands are growing. I think it’s because the youth are buying used bikes now,” says Coury. “They want to put on a new exhaust system, a new set of pegs, a new set of handlebars, because the bike is 20 years old.” And for those younger riders, it’s not all about chrome or just achieving a certain look. Performance plays a big factor. Thrashin’s High Bend, Mid Bend and Low Bend handlebars look good, but they are also designed to accommodate freestyle riding. Marketing to younger riders has taught Coury a lot. For one thing, they are all about instant gratification, both when it comes to buying parts and riding. Coury says he likes to see dealers stock parts specifically for the younger demographic.

62

OCTOBER 2018

But with a V-twin, Coury says, “The minute I pull out of my garage, I’m already riding. I can ride anywhere from 45 minutes to seven hours, and the whole time I’m on the road, I’m riding.”

While younger riders like to just get on and go, they don’t go far. “Most of the youth today isn’t riding cross country. They’re not even riding out of state. They just like to ride locally,” Coury says. With that in mind, Thrashin Supply designs smaller luggage. The water-resistant Essential saddlebags are just big enough for the basics, like a jacket and hat, with a size of just 11 inches x 8 inches x 5 inches. The even more compact handlebar bag is 5 inches x 7 inches x 3¼ inches, and has both lateral and horizontal attachment points to mount in a variety of configurations. ■

Creativity and Quality

B

eing independent has its benefits. For RIVCO Products Inc. founder and president Rich Colano, owning an independently owned company means the freedom to design the exact products he wants, often making specific products for specific motorcycles. There’s no one to answer to, so creativity reigns. That’s good news for customers who want a product that looks unique, functions well and precisely fits their motorcycle. That design freedom has translated to over 350 different products in the RIVCO lineup, including lighting solutions, unique systems for air and electric horns, armrests, trailer hitches, flag mounts and oil filter wrenches. The applications lists cover a huge spectrum of makes and models, with parts available for old and new motorcycles, from 1989 to the present. RIVCO, which is distributed through Drag Specialties, got its start over 40 years ago as an independent motorcycle service and parts business. From there, RIVCO transitioned into one of the largest Yamaha dealers in the United States, then into a high-end contract machining vendor and finally into a custom motorcycle accessory manufacturer.

RIVCO is well known for its range of LED lighting upgrades, and its newest addition to that line are the Illuminati Series of headlights.

That evolution reflects Colano’s lifelong passion for motorcycles. Not content with selling someone else’s products, Colano began to design, manufacture and sell his own proprietary bolt-on accessories for the street cruiser, Bagger and touring motorcycle markets.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Free Reign

As for the name, the “RI” in RIVCO is inspired by Colano’s first name, Rich. The “V” is for Vito, the name of both his father and firstborn son, and for his younger son, Vincent. It is Colano’s way of honoring his father and a reminder of his commitment to his family. Everything – design, manufacturing, polishing, finishing, assembly, packaging, and shipping – happens at RIVCO’s factory housed in a historic building in Burlington, WI. Colano has deep ties to that region, and Wisconsin has a strong motorcycling culture, so for Colano, the historic factory is perfectly located. One of RIVCO’s top product lines is its LED lighting upgrades for motorcycles. RIVCO offers everything from LED replacement headlights – like the 7-inch LED sealed beam conversion kit – to driving lights, tail and brake light combinations and license plate accent lighting. Everything is designed for superior looks, quality and ease of installation, providing a quick upgrade in looks and visibility. The newest lighting products from RIVCO are the Illuminati Series of headlights. The new design is based on the current proven LED products, but the Illuminati headlights have even greater light output. The Illuminati Road Glide headlight assembly produces 5600 Lumens for the low beam and 6800 Lumens for the high beam. True Dual Beam technology ensures the road ahead is brightly lit, and the lifetime warranty offers peace of mind for customers and dealers alike. ■

BIG-BORE KITS

Going Big

Bolt-On Power

R

evolution Performance bolt-on cylinderand-piston kits are now available for the Milwaukee-Eight. Direct replacements for the stock components but with a 4¼-inch bore, Revolution’s parts net a huge gain in both displacement and performance. The package takes an OE 107-inch Milwaukee-Eight all the way out to 124 cubic inches and nets a 17 percent gain in horsepower, and a whopping 27 percent gain in torque. Matched with a bit of cylinder-head work, a .520-lift cam, a larger throttle body and a 2-into-1 pipe Revolution’s bigbore shop bike pumped out 143 horsepower and 149 ft./ lbs. of torque. All bolt-on, all done without removing the engine from the frame. They didn’t stop there. Complete big-bore cylinderand-piston kits are also available for the 114-inch Milwaukee-Eight. Matching the new 4¼-inch bore with that engine’s 4 ½-inch stroke nets a 127-inch displacement. Turning a fresh eye towards the 120R Twin Cam crate engine, Revolution has developed a bolt-on cylinder/piston package for this engine. With a 41/8-inch bore, it brings that engine out to 124 cubic inches. All these big-bore kits are available now. Like all the Revolution Performance kits, they’re direct replacements for the OE pieces. All feature sleeveless all-aluminum

cylinders and forged pistons, 10.5:1 flattop pistons for the Milwaukee-Eight, 10.8:1 domed pistons for the 120R, and each kit comes complete with everything needed for the conversion. The cylinders, pistons, piston rings, wrist pins and all the required gaskets are included. Unique in the marketplace, the Revolution Performance big-bore replacement cylinders are manufactured using aerospace-grade alloy with nickel-silicon-carbide electroplated bores and no steel liners. The benefits are many. Not only do those NSC-coated bores provide a much more lubrication-friendly surface than steel, with much higher wear resistance, the sleeveless design allows a bigger bore in a bolt-on package with a significant increase in wall thickness for more strength, stability and heat dissipation. There’s also a more efficient fin design to further aid cooling. All the cylinders carry a Lifetime Warranty against warping and/or plating defects and they’re completely serviceable. Should the need ever arise, the cylinders can be sent back to Revolution where they’ll be stripped, re-coated, re-finished and returned to as-new condition. Unlike over-bored OE cylinders these are the last cylinders a rider will ever need to buy. ■

Custom Grips, Covers and Floorboards

W

hether it’s a ground-up build or a worked-over stock bike, an Eddie Trotta custom is all about the details. The attention given to the little pieces, things like the various linkages, covers, caps, grips, latches and more is unmistakable. The FatBook is loaded with those Trotta-design finishing touches, and now there are more. Just added to the FatBook Mid-year Update are some points covers for the Milwaukee-Eight, a whole selection of new two-piece Comfort Grips with broad applications, and a couple styles of Stealth Floorboards for FL-models and Trikes. They’re all Trotta-style details with a difference, finishing touches that turn heads. The new two-piece Comfort Grips are especially cool. A two-part design with knurled-rubber grip surfaces, they’re offered in a chrome or black anodized finish in the Dead End or Diamond styles. A Platinum style is available in chrome.

The two-piece Comfort Grips offer up plenty of detailed style. They’re available in chrome or black anodized finishes.

It’s in the Details

This slick Stash Tube is available as an option for the two-piece Comfort Grips.

One especially trick feature available as an option for the two-piece Comfort Grips is a cleverly hidden and easily accessed Stash Tube. Thanks to that two-piece design, the Stash Tube simply slips into the end of the handlebar and the end cap screws right on. The grips are a direct-fit for all the 2008 through 2018 FLHT/FLHR/FLTR/ FLHX models and Trikes, the 2016 through 2018 Softails, 2016 and 2017 FLDLS, 2013 through 2015 FXSBSE models, the 2014 and 2015 FLSTNSE and the 2011 and 2012 FLSTSE.

Points covers for the Milwaukee-Eight engine

The new Stealth Floorboards deserve a good look, too. CNC-machined from 6061 billet aluminum, they’re available with a chrome or black anodized finish and both have a diamond-cut center area for increased traction. Bolt-for-bolt applications cover all the 1999 through 2018 FLHT/FLHX/FLHR/FLTR models, the 2009 through 2013 FL Trikes, 2000 through 2017 FLST and the 2012 through 2016 FLD.

Stealth Floorboards

Don’t miss the new Eddie Trotta Designs points covers for the Milwaukee-Eight, either. Also listed in that FatBook Mid-year Update, they’re CNCmachined from 6061 billet aluminum and offered with a chrome or black anodized finish. The styles, Cross Cut or Platinum, can continue a theme set by the new two-piece Comfort Grips and Stealth Floorboards.

Cammed Up, Oiled Down

More Mods for the Milwaukee-Eight

F

euling Parts has a hot new cam for the Milwaukee-Eight, as well as a complete Oiling System Pack designed to address lubrication issues on the stock water-cooled version of that multi-valve V-twin.

Water-cooled camchest kit

521 Reaper cam Water-cooled oiling system

Feuling has been all over the Milwaukee-Eight from the start. The company designed its own eight-valver a few years back so when HarleyDavidson introduced its version, Feuling was more than ready with products like the new *Reaper 521 cam. With an aggressive sound and extra-strong pulling power, the Reaper 521 has a range of 2,250 rpm to 6,250 rpm. While it works great in stock-displacement engines, it really shines in big-bores with added compression. Although high-lift valve springs are required when using the cam, ported heads and larger throttle bodies are not. Of course, upgrading to both would further complement the benefits of installing the cam. Feuling has complete kits for the new cam, kits that include the camshaft and everything needed for an easy installation.

The new Oiling System Pack for the water-cooled Milwaukee-Eight is available in HP+ or Race Series configurations. The HP+ uses a 6061 aluminum high-volume oil pump, while the Race Series setup uses a 7075 aluminum pump that is 50 percent harder and stronger than OE. Both feature larger gears and properly sized passages, pressure relief valve seats and seals. The pumps greatly increase oil pressure, volume and scavenging, all issues with an OE Milwaukee-Eight. This new pump is designed especially for the water-cooled engine, and delivers 30 percent more pressure and volume over stock, with a 53 percent increase in scavenge volume. Combined with the kit’s HighFlow Cam Plate, oil flow in and out of the engine is significantly increased. All of this leads to quieter and smoother engine operation, increased oil pressure and flow, an increase in scavenge volume, and 68 percent more oil volume to the crank and rod bearing. The results are cooler engine and oil temperatures and the virtual elimination of wet sumping, blow by and oily air cleaners. Kits include the oil pumps, cam plates, lifters, cam bearings and full installation hardware. ■

Competitor Clutch Kits

S

tripped-down Dynas and Sportsters, hot-rodded Softails and two-up Touring bikes all have one common need – a strong, slip-free clutch.

The reasons may differ but the need remains; whether it’s sport and stunt riding, harnessing big-inch horsepower and torque or for dealing with heavyweight riding, an upgraded clutch is always in order.

BDL’S Competitor Clutch Kits features drop-in installation and performance that promises strong, smooth operation.

BDL Competitor Clutch Kits has drop-in applications that cover Shovelheads, Evos, Twin Cams, Sportsters and the Milwaukee-Eights. The Competitor Clutch Kits are a serious upgrade over stock, and increase the clutch friction surface by up to 60 percent. Competitor Clutch performance, depending on the application, begins with race-proven Synthetic Aramid Fiber friction discs, and continues on with precision-machined steel drive discs, extra-strong coil or diaphragm-style springs.

There are also extra-large/heavy-duty hubs with double-row bearings, polished aluminum or patented Ball-Bearing Lockup pressure plates. All of these parts fit into a stock Harley-Davidson basket. The Kit is custom adjustable to a rider’s need, too. Coil springs can be mixed and matched to custom-tune pack pressure and lever pull. The Ball-Bearing Lockups can also be adjusted with optional carbide ball bearings and various-pressure diaphragm springs. ■

The Understated Seat Low-Profile and Low-Key

2004-2006 XL, 2010-2018 XL and 2008-2018 Bagger models.

he design philosophy at LePera Motorcycle Seats is that a seat should enhance the lines of the motorcycle, blending with the entire package rather than being the focal point. The low-profile, low-key Streaker seat is the epitome of that philosophy.

T

Like all LePera seats, the Streaker has a lot more going for it than just appearances. Underneath the low-profile seat is the company’s signature handcrafted, The Streaker powder-coated 16-gauge steel base plate. The plate is carefully designed to precisely fit each model, while the carpeted bottom prevents any scratching.

The Streaker has simple, clean lines that make it a versatile seat option, looking equally at home on a stock or a customized Harley-Davidson. Its lines are sleek enough to flow well with the style of the motorcycle it sits on, with no high back rests or other dramatic features to call attention to itself, creating the perfect stance.

LePera Motorcycle Seats has been a family-owned company since 1972. Second-generation owners Christine LePera and Bob LePera, Jr. head up the company today, with Bob designing each new seat to the same level of quality and precision that LePera is known for. loorboards need to be practical, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t turn heads. Neo-Fusion floorboards, available from Drag Specialties in four different finishes, accomplish both function and flair with the signature style of Ken’s Factory. Ken Nagai took his years of experience building custom Harley-Davidsons and applied it to aftermarket parts, creating various lines that each have a distinct design style. Riders can customize their motorcycles as their imagination and budget allows, adding one part, installing parts from a single Ken’s Factory line or going for a mix-and-match combination of several lines.

The Neo-Fusion floorboards have a uniquely shaped design, with sharp edges complemented by concentric grooves. The billet aluminum floorboards measure in at 157/8 inches x 61/16 inches x 19/16 inches, so there is plenty of room for a rider’s feet. And those grooves not only add to the style, but they provide extra grip. Sold as a set, Neo-Fusion floorboards come in four finishes: black machine, polished, black machine with brass inserts, and polished with brass inserts. The Neo-Fusion brake pedal matches perfectly with the floorboards, with a similar aesthetic and the same four finish options. The 5¼-inches x 2¾-inches pedal is also made of billet aluminum and includes the mounting hardware.
