ne of the best parts of my job is getting invited to motorcycle events and it recently happened to me twice in the same month. In early October, the Pirelli/Metzeler company had its new Metzeler Cruisetec tire coming out and they wanted members of the press to try them out themselves on the road. I gladly accepted their invitation to fly back to ride with some fellow journalists around the countryside and mountains of Arkansas. Check out my report of the trip that starts on page 68, followed by a technical story about the new tire. Thanks to my friends at Pirelli/Metzeler for their hospitality.
sales rep now about getting qualified for the 2019 ride. Great job as always by the Drag Specialties sales and event team!
Just a few weeks later, it was time to head to Greenville, South Carolina for the annual Drag Specialties Dealer Ride. Each year’s event is at a different location and this year we were in what the locals call “Upcountry,” the northwest corner of South Carolina and into parts of North Carolina. Drag’s dealer rides can’t be beat. There’s always such a great mix of adventure by riding new routes most of us haven’t been on, seeing people from the industry that we might not have seen since the previous year, and making new friends. Our story starts on page 36. For those of you who were on the ride, this feature will be a nice record of your experience. If you were not there, I hope you see what you missed out on and start talking to your Drag Specialties
Speaking of the FatBook, the cover bike of this issue is the very same motorcycle that adorns the cover of the 2019 Drag Specialties catalog, better known as the FatBook. Be sure to read the behind the scenes story starting on page 24 about this great looking custom put together by Nick Trask and the crew at Trask Performance.
Looking ahead, the Drag Specialties Magazine staff will soon be heading to the Spring 2019 NVP Product Expo, this year for the first time in Louisville, Kentucky. Most of Drag’s dealers will likely be there, but if you haven’t made your plans yet, it’s not too late. Hundreds of booths will feature the top V-twin accessories found in the Drag Specialties FatBook and the people who designed and manufactured these many great products will be there to talk to you.
We hope to see you in Louisville.

NEWS EVENTS Motorcycle Ownership Among Women Climbs to 19 Percent “Many people in the industry have worked some 30 years to achieve this, and now the data confirms it: More and more women are getting out there and enjoying motorcycles.” The MIC polled 2,472 adults nationwide for the 2018 Motorcycle/ATV Owner Survey. For decades, the MIC surveys have served as the census of motorcycling, and have tracked a steady growth in the percentage of women who own bikes. “Major efforts to increase the number of women riders go back to the late 1980s when top manufacturers and distributors came together and formed Discover Today’s Motorcycling, the industry outreach program built to introduce new riders to two-wheeling,” said the MIC’s Cam Arnold. “The first DTM project in the 1980s spotlighted the historic 1916 Van Buren sisters ride across the country and garnered much media attention. Throughout the 1990s and on till today, the big brands have dedicated increasing amounts of attention to the women’s market, and we’ve simply seen more and more positive imagery on TV, in movies and in many mainstream settings where women on motorcycles are just having fun.”
N
early one in five motorcycle owners is now female, compared with one in 10 less than a decade ago, and the data suggests that women could soon make up one quarter of owners. This would be a major shift in motorcycling demographics, according to the latest national survey by the Motorcycle Industry Council. Among all age groups, women now make up 19 percent of motorcycle owners. But the 2018 survey showed even greater female ownership within younger generations. Among Gen X (currently between 39 to 53 years old) motorcycle owners, 22 percent were women; among Gen Y (currently between 24 to 38 years old,) 26 percent were women. “As the number of Boomer and mature motorcyclists shrink and are replaced by newer riders, we could soon be looking at a solid 25 percent of motorcycle owners being female,” said Andria Yu, MIC director of communications. “We’ve seen with our own eyes many more women riders – on the roads, on the trails, on the track, with families, at motorcycling events, forming clubs and just being part of everyday group rides.

The 2018 owner survey also found that women motorcycle owners spend, on average, $574 a year on tires, routine repairs, maintenance, replacement parts, and accessories and modifying equipment, compared with $497 by men. “We’ve seen particularly strong growth in the aftermarket sector for women,” said Cinnamon Kernes, newly appointed vice president and general manager of MIC Events and the American International Motorcycle Expo presented by Nationwide. “Over the past decade, more women are designing riding gear and other products specifically for female riders, working in major companies or creating their own brands. Having gear designed for women by women was a huge step and has certainly helped encourage female ridership.” Motorcycling has grown in popularity and acceptance in American culture in recent decades, which is reflected in the survey. It found that 66 percent of women motorcycle owners say their family and friends would have a positive attitude toward motorcycles and scooters. ■

espite having two shows of its own each year, Drag Specialties made a first-time appearance at the AIMExpo, held October 11-14 in Las Vegas. AIMExpo caught the attention of Drag Specialties with the news of a Powersports Industry Week concept, involving a dealer-consumer show at the Mandalay Bay convention center, Las Vegas BikeFest, the MotoAmerica Night of Champions banquet, and the Monster Energy Cup Supercross at nearby Sam Boyd Stadium.
The parent company, LeMans Corporation, decided to provide the all-important distributor presence to support the efforts of more than 50 of its vendors that were signed up to exhibit at this year’s show. Participation also meant bringing in house brands such as Arctiva, Icon, Moose Racing, Moose Utility Division, Parts Unlimited, Thor, and Z1R for exposure in both the dealer and consumer hours. Produced by the Motorcycle Industry Council, AIMExpo is the only show of its kind in the United States. AIME – which stands for American International Motorcycle Expo continued on pg. 20...

FATBOOK COVER BIKE
CO V E R
S TO R Y
Sleek, simple and clean – it’s the time-honored prescription for a hot-rod Harley and it sure works on the 2019 FatBook cover bike.
Ness Oval Micro mirrors and a Custom Dynamics Probeam LED headlight found their way up front on this one.
H
ave a look at the 2019 FatBook cover bike, a new-generation Softail that’s been made over by Nick Trask of Trask Performance – it’s going to get plenty of attention.
Not that the new model FXFBS Fat Bob is likely to go unnoticed wherever it goes. With big-inch Milwaukee-Eight power, a newly designed frame that’s both lighter and stiffer, triple-disc braking and an all-around tough guy attitude, Harley-Davidson is calling this one its purest, best performing hot rod ever. Hard to disagree with that, but as everyone knows, no matter how good any factory Harley is when it rolls off the production line, it can only get better with some time, some planning and the FatBook. Trask and his crew in Phoenix put these words into action when it got to work on the bike gracing the cover of the newest edition of Drag Specialties’ parts catalog. First, a word about the new color, arguably the first thing that’s going to catch everyone’s eye. “The last thing we wanted was another black Harley-Davidson blending into the background,” Trask explains. There’s little chance of that happening here. This 2018 FXFBS is a stunner, its bright and vibrant PPG yellow making darn sure of that. However, before any of that paint went on, Trask and the guys had a real go at this Fat Bob front to back, and they found everything needed to turn this Harley into something special right inside the FatBook.

Lots of changes here starting with the Ness Procross rims and rotors. The seat is a Drag Specialties Double Diamond with custom stitching, the air cleaner is one of Trask’s see-through *Assault Charge setups.
While Trask Performance customs are all knockouts, wild one-off builds going all the way back to the first Assault Series builds, this assignment would be limited to readily available bolt-on parts, as well as the Trask team’s discerning eye and attention to detail. With the exception of a custommade side cover from Trask, that’s exactly what happened. In short order the Fat Bob took on a whole new personality. A factory-stock Fat Bob still comes with a somewhat cluttered look. “Just cleaning that up made a huge difference,” Trask says. One of the first areas addressed was the factory exhaust. The stock Harley system with its bronze-tinted pipes and twin oversize mufflers is huge – it visually dominates the whole right side of the motorcycle. Trask Performance’s *Assault 2-into-1 stainless-steel replacement pipe took care of that in short, upswept order. And this being a Trask project, performance needed an upgrade so the engine got even more oomph with a full
*S&S Cycle 550C cam kit, *Sidewinder valve springs and a free-breathing *Trask Assault Charge air cleaner. Off to a great start, another big change came with a pair of 18 x 5½ Ness Procross wheels, the matching Procross Jaggedstyle front and rear rotors and a set of Pirelli Night Dragon tires, chunky 180/55-18s at both ends. The theme was set. The Build Sheet lists where things went from there but the highlights, literally, begin with the finish chosen for all the small bits that accompany that bright-yellow paint. It’s Cerakote, a gun-maker’s standard and it’s been used here in all the places you’d expect to see a more traditional powder coating. It’s up front on the fork brace, it’s on the air cleaner, on that handlebar and its riser mounts, on the dash panel, the rear fender struts, the foot pegs, controls and more. Everywhere you see that industrial-look gray finish it’s Cerakote, playing perfectly against the bright, brash PPG yellow. Simple, and cool.

The same can be said about all the new lighting, front and rear. Up front it’s a plain, bottom-mount Drag Specialties headlight bucket fit with a Custom Dynamics True Black Probeam LED, a neat combo that replaces the stock, futuristic headlight assembly. All the turn signals are Joker Machine’s Rat series, amber for the front, red on the tail. There’s also a new Drag Specialties Double Diamond seat with custom green stitching. Given the attention to performance from Trask’s team, there was an equal emphasis on handling, with Legend Suspension on board. Up front it’s the AXEO system in the forks, on the rear it’s a full AIR-A replacement. There’s plenty more, like slim foot pegs from THRASHIN Supply, Barnett’ clear derby cover, stainless steel fastener kits from Feuling, and Ken’s Factory’s super detailed rocker box and cam covers. ■

Custom and Customer
LED Lights and Buyer Satisfaction
When a customer comes calling, Custom Dynamics is on it. Not only does its online help center help answer common questions, its in-house support tickets help expedite dealer and customer inquiries.
W
hen Dave Pribula founded Custom Dynamics back in 2002, his idea was to have a company that was about more than just high-quality LED lighting products and electrical modules. From the start, outstanding customer service has been just as important as the products Custom Dynamics sells. Even when Custom Dynamics was a fledgling company operating out of Pribula’s home, the company focused on being quick and attentive with customers. That is still part of the routine today, with most customer and dealer calls and emails returned the same day. The email option is especially effective for customers who are outside the time zone of the Custom Dynamics headquarters in Youngsville, NC. Pribula often answers emails over the weekend, too. To ensure that every customer or dealer inquiry is resolved, Custom Dynamics uses a program called Zendesk to create an internal support ticket. Both the company and the customer can open a ticket, and both parties can keep track of its progress. As a part of its customer service commitment, Custom Dynamics also offers a generous warranty for its products. All of the LEDs have a lifetime warranty, and the electrical modules have a five-year warranty. The way Pribula and the team at Custom Dynamics see it, the LEDs should be the last lighting purchase ever made for that part of the motorcycle.
Another aspect of customer service is listening to what motorcycle riders want in a product. Custom Dynamics has recently expanded the ProBeam line, which uses automotive-grade LEDs to produce an even brighter light output with a wider viewing angle than stock. Some customers were asking for ProBeam inserts that could be paired with the stock light housing, so Custom Dynamics complied. There are now several ProBeam turn signal insert options for various Harley-Davidson applications. Riders who want to stick with the complete package can still opt for the entire housing and lighting system, including several options that retain the look of the stock lens. The Complete ProBeam Dynamic Ringz Universal Turn Signal has an aluminum bullet housing with a chrome or gloss black anodized finish. The ProBeam LED Dynamic Ringz Turn Signal Inserts inside are covered by a DOT and SAE compliant smoked lens. Similarly, the Complete ProBeam Red Universal Turn Signal for the rear has red LEDs topped with a red lens, while the Complete ProBeam Solid Amber Universal Turn Signal has the compliant amber lens in front of the LEDs. ■

Next-Generation Dyno Tuning
The Fuelpak Pro Wideband Tuning Kit includes a pair of 18mm wideband Bosch oxygen sensors and their leads, which connect to a control module that’s installed in-line between an FP3 and a motorcycle. Once installed, Fuelpak Pro unlocks a whole new set of features in the FP3.
T
he Fuelpak FP3 has been one of the most successful products Vance & Hines has ever introduced, and the company has been innovating in this industry for decades.
Easy to hook-up and use, it connects wirelessly to a smartphone allowing your customers to flash new performance tunes right into their bike’s ECU. An AutoTune feature using the OE factory sensors adds yet another layer of precision-tuning capability. These functions, as well as features like the FP3’s ability to read and clear diagnostic codes and display live sensor data, has made Fuelpak FP3 the success it is. Now there’s the Fuelpak Pro, the next generation of Fuelpak technology. Aimed at the professional dynotuner, Fuelpak Pro is a powerful evolution of Fuelpak. The Fuelpak Pro gives pro-tuners with dynamometer access to all the tools needed to tune for any combination of performance parts and engine upgrades.
The Fuelpak Pro Wideband Tuning Kit includes a pair of 18mm wideband Bosch oxygen sensors and their leads, which connect to a control module that’s installed in-line between an FP3 and a motorcycle. A quick plug-and-play setup, once installed Fuelpak Pro unlocks a whole new set of features in the FP3. Able to collect four times the data with greater accuracy thanks to those Bosch wideband sensors, the Fuelpak AutoTune feature becomes much more powerful and fast. Full custom-mapping sessions can be completed in as little as 15 minutes. Additionally, every dealer and shop using the Fuelpak Wideband Tuning Kit receives a private account on the new Vance & Hines Fuelpak Pro dealer-exclusive cloud server. Dyno-tuned maps can be uploaded, saved and added to a private library of FP3 maps accessible through the app or any web browser. Fuelpak Pro is a complete ecosystem for creating, storing and delivering custommaps to FP3 users worldwide.

VANCE & HINES
Aimed at the professional dyno-tuner, Fuelpak Pro is a powerful evolution of Fuelpak. The Fuelpak Pro gives pro-tuners with dynamometers access to all the settings needed to tune for any combination of performance parts and engine upgrades.
Thanks to the Fuelpak Pro, the tuning possibilities are virtually unlimited. Not only can air/fuel ratio tables be edited, the front and rear cylinder volumetric efficiency tables can be analyzed and adjusted individually. Front and rear cylinder spark advance can be also be adjusted to take into account engine, air, and cylinderhead temperatures. Other features include the ability to manipulate performance-enrichment tables to add extra fuel and reduce spark timing as required. Throttle blade control tables are adjustable to deliver precise, and crisp, throttle response on fly-by-wire equipped motorcycles. Using AutoTune, maps can be quickly and easily created to meet the requirements of the motorcycle being tuned and any combination of parts that may be on it. With Step Test intervals every 250 rpm and Sweep Tests starting at 1,500 rpm, the volumetric efficiency delta values, or the
difference between those on the starting map and the data that was acquired, will be displayed. Typically, a bike can be brought into a perfect tune with just one or two AutoTune sessions, at which point that map can be flashed to the motorcycle. As great as all these new capabilities are, there are also some perks for the dealership or shop. To begin with, Fuelpak Pro does not marry itself to any one vehicle. Fuelpak Pro can be used again and again on multiple vehicles. Each motorcycle tuned, of course, will require its own Fuelpak FP3 that is left on the motorcycle for the customer after the bike has been mapped. So, in addition to charging for a custom tune and dyno time, there’s the sale of a Fuelpak FP3 – a nice upsell for the store. ■

CLUTCH UPGRADES
Stronger Than Stock
Clutch Upgrades for Late Model Big Twins
Once your Harley-Davidson riding customers upgrade to one of Barnett’s direct-fit upgraded clutch kits, they can show it off with the Scorpion Series clear derby covers.
D
o just about anything performance oriented to a big Harley-Davidson, add new pipes, a freeflowing filter or a cam or big-bore swap and it isn’t long before the need for a stronger-thanstock clutch shows up. In fact, if that Harley is a Touring model and it’s routinely ridden two-up and loaded down, a stronger clutch can become a necessity no matter if that bike has been hotrodded or not. In either case, modified bike or stock, when a Harley riding customer senses the need for a better clutch, Barnett has what he or she is looking for. The lineup of upgraded options covers everything right up to the newest 2018 and 2019 models. One of the latest additions to this long list of HarleyDavidson clutches is their direct-fit upgraded clutch kits for the 2013 and later CVO/SE Big Twins and all the 2017 and later Touring models that use Harley-Davidson’s assist and slip clutch. It’s not uncommon to discover the need for a new clutch basket during a clutch-replacement session. Barnett has those. In truth, upgrading the basket isn’t a bad move in any case and the Barnett basket is certainly an upgrade. Precision machined from tough 2024-T3 billet aluminum, and hard anodized, it’s a few steps up from OE in quality, durability and smoothness of operation. For anyone

wanting to show off all this new hardware there are Scorpion Series clear derby covers – a finishing touch that offers an unobstructed view into that new clutch. In the business for more than 70 years, all of these late-model products reflect that experience and know-how. The clutch kits feature segmented Kevlar friction plates designed for increased oil flow, longer life and smoother operation. There are also full sets of tempered-steel/precisionmachined drive plates and heavy-duty clutch springs included. Every kit is quality checked for exact stack height to guarantee a perfect fit and optimal performance. And, it’s all made in-house by Barnett. That same attention to detail, quality and performance is there in the upgraded baskets and clear Scorpion Series covers. The baskets are a direct bolt-for-bolt replacement on the stock ring gear/primary sprocket and Barnett supplies the hardware. The clear Scorpion Series derby covers with their polycarbonate window are firmly secured and sealed with an O-ring gasket and an outer cover that’s CNC machined from billet aluminum and available in chrome or black powder coat. ■

New Road Rage Fitments system ends with a short-megaphone muffler with a removable baffle and a cool-looking reverse-cone style. The overall look is clean, purposeful and in either style, a Road Rage 2-into-1 is a serious performance statement. Sure the Road Rage 2-into-1 looks great, is lightweight and offers improved ground clearance over stock, but the real payoff comes when the throttle is twisted. Exhausts with that 2-into-1 design are known for their scavenging effect, their ability to literally pull the exhaust out of the engine for maximized flow, increased horsepower and buckets of torque.

All of Bassani’s history, experience and know-how – and that unmistakable exhaust tone – is here in the newest Road Rage versions for the Harley-Davidson Street Bob, Lowrider and Slim. There are three versions of the Road Rage for those Softail models – an all stainless-steel exhaust, and a mild-steel set of pipes in chrome or black. They’re all packed with everything that’s made the Road Rage 2-into-1 so popular, with the design and fitment optimized for the new generation of Softails and their Milwaukee-Eights.
With a noticeable boost in the lowand mid-range torque coupled with a free-flowing top-end and increased horsepower, the Bassani Road Rage pipes have the full rpm range covered.
In addition to fitments for the Street Bob, Lowrider and Slim models, Bassani has also worked up direction fit applications of the Road Rage 2-into-1 for the Sport Glide, Fat Boy and Breakout models. ■

Brake Products for V-Twins
L
ong a purveyor of quality motorcycle components, EBC Brakes manufactures products for a range of American-made V-twin motorcycles. They include those from Harley-Davidson, and older models from Buell and Victory.
Brake Pads
Drag Specialties Magazine checked in with James Hallett, CEO of EBC Brakes, to learn more about some of the products available through Drag Specialties. “EBC Brakes operates from four manufacturing plants in the UK and U.S. to produce more than 10 million components each year,” Hallett explained from his office at EBC’s worldwide headquarters in Northampton, UK. “This year that componentry includes a number of offerings for American-built motorcycles.”
Brake Rotors Among the first products Hallett highlights are the range of custom stainless-steel rotors. These fully floating brake rotors feature stainless steel componentry, with a heat-treated and tempered outer rotor ring featuring a diamond ground finish and a center hub offering a choice of clean black or chrome luster finish. “A stand-out feature on our floating rotors is EBC’s patented SD or ‘square drive’ button system, which allows the rotor blade to expand and contract freely under heavy braking, effectively eliminating brake vibration and rotor distortion,” Hallett says. The rotors are available in wide or narrow band options – wide band style is suited for use with OEM-style calipers while the narrow band is for use with smaller aftermarket calipers. EBC also produce a range of solid mount (non-floating) rotors which bolt on with no modifications required.
EBC brake pads are available in four different grades, each one a good fitment for specific applications.
EBC makes four grades of brake pads for American-built motorcycles: Soft, Medium, Heavy-Duty and High-End. Typically offering a lifetime of 15,000 to 20,000 miles, the Soft pads are made of Kevlar organics and essential on billet or chromed rotors to prevent galling. The Medium pads are semi-sintered with a high copper content for longer life, and typically provide a lifetime of 20,000 to 30,000 miles, The Heavy Duty pads are fully sintered and made of a Double-H copper carbon alloy compound. They usually have a lifetime of 30,000 to 50,000 miles. The High End pads are made of premium EPFA sintered copper carbon blend to offer the longest lifetime possible while maintaining a like-new feel. They typically provide between 30,000 to 50,000 miles of use. ■

Corner Confidence
Adaptive Lighting for Better Visibility The Adaptive 2 Series LED headlights have an integrated optical system that includes the adaptive low beam and J.W. Speaker’s proprietary ComfortLite™ high beam. It is all housed in a heavy-duty, die-cast aluminum housing that features plug-and-play installation for a wide number of fitments.
A graphic demonstration of how the LED light arrays on either side of the Adaptive 2 Series headlight shows how they illuminate when a bike is cornering or going through a turn.
The Adaptive 2 Series lights have improved function over the previous generation. Previously, the lamps only had adaptive functionality with the low beam. Now, the adaptive functionality will also operate when the high beam is on. This is called Dual Burn® and is a feature J.W. Speaker has added to most of its headlights.
J
.W. Speaker wants riders to master the corners with confidence. The company’s Adaptive 2 Series headlights feature Adaptive technology when using both the high beam and the low beam. These headlights have a ditch-to-ditch light pattern, eliminating dark corners on sharp turns and providing light 1500 feet down the road for a more confident ride. The LED headlights are “adaptive” because they know when a rider is leaning or turning and they dynamically adjust the light accordingly. The intelligent design helps to eliminate potentially dangerous blind spots when cornering. The targeted LED beam shines right where a rider needs it to see their way safely through corners. Behind the LEDs are on-board sensors and advanced electronics that calculate lean angles on a real-time basis, automatically directing the lights to coordinate with the path of the motorcycle. Visibility is immediately maximized in key areas of the road that would be left in the dark with standard, non-adaptive headlights.
J.W. Speaker now has new brackets that allow the Adaptive 2 Series headlight to be fitted to Kawasaki and Yamaha motorcycles.

The “adaptive” feature of the Adaptive 2 Series headlights works with both high and low beam functions.
The headlights come in several sizes, including a 7-inch round fairing style, a 5¾-inch round bucket mount and Road Glide 5¾-inch dual headlights. They are all DOT compliant for street legal use. Fitments are now more versatile, too. J.W. Speaker has redesigned the rear castings in a way that will allow the company to add to its growing list of fitments, even for metric bike applications. While the Adaptive Series lights are increasing in functionality and fitments, the price has actually dropped. All J.W. Speaker Adaptive Series lights have reduced in price by approximately 20 percent. After three years on the market, J.W. Speaker has seen great success with the lights and a constantly growing number of customers. That growth means that the company has been able to streamline its processes, including manufacturing, engineering and sourcing to achieve economies of scale. The end result is, of course, a better price for customers and an easier sale for dealers. ■

Chances are good some of those riders might already know about the Scorcher 31s. They’ve been original equipment on a number of Harleys, and have been a factory-approved upgrade replacement tire for years. The Michelin/Harley-Davidson design-collaboration and co-branding of the entire Scorcher lineup goes back to 2007. That long relationship means many of your customers are familiar or have heard of the Scorcher 31’s superb traction in the wet and its supple, comfortable-riding casing design.

MICHELIN
The Commander II from Michelin will provide your customers with long-lasting performance in wet and dry conditions, as well as a light, nimble feel.
These features combine with the great handling and feel of its specifically-engineered profile for a tire that will look pretty attractive when your customers are ready for new rubber. With the Scorcher 31 there’s light, nimble handling, especially on winding roads, and the carbon-black enriched compound incorporates all the know-how that Michelin has derived from decades of road-racing experience. The payoff is a confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry roads coupled with excellent durability, all of that coming without any compromise in the tire’s all-around, all-weather performance. The Scorcher 31s are available in a wide range of sizes of fronts and rears covering all the FLs. Another option for FL riders to consider is the ever-popular Commander II. Michelin designed these premium tires specifically for the heavyweight cruiser/touring segment. Available in 33 sizes, including four alpha-numeric sizes, the Commander II is much more than just a long-wearing tire for a heavyweight Harley. The Commander II is an all-around performer with great handling and ride qualities, tires that deliver strong traction over both wet and dry road surfaces. They also feature plenty of stability, with a light, nimble feel and excellent feedback in all situations.

That performance will stay around for a good long time, too – the added bonus with the Commander IIs is longevity. Big bike riders report back that the Commander IIs can last more than 20,000 miles on the rear wheel of a Bagger. Chalk that up to the rubber compound Michelin developed just for the Commander II. Michelin also gave these tires a tread pattern designed to reduce irregular wear; a pattern computer optimized to minimize wear while maximizing the amount of rubber on the road. The Commander II’s tread patterns has also been optimized to efficiently evacuate water in wet riding conditions. The Michelin name and reputation are known worldwide for quality and performance. With the Scorchers, this is accompanied by the Harley-Davidson name, factory endorsement and the Bar & Shield logo right on the sidewall. With the Commander II tires, it comes delivering plenty of responsive, sportier handling and added longevity. ■

BIG-BORE KITS
Price-Point Power
New, Lower Cost Big-Bore Kits affordable in a zero-compromise environment. High quality rarely aligns well with price reduction, but in this rare case, S&S seems to really understand who their buyer is and have done the work to create a part that checks off all the important boxes. What it did was knock a bunch of dollar signs off those kits so that most of them are now offered at a MSRP of $799. Each kit is still the same high-quality liner wrapped in cast aluminum, and include high compression pistons, rings, clips and gaskets.
The numbers don’t lie – S&S Cycle’s Big-Bore Kits provide a serious performance boost for Sportster riders. Now your XL customers can get all that power for a lower price.
M
any savvy dealers know this already, but for those out of the loop, here’s an interesting fact about the used motorcycle market – Harley-Davidson Sportsters are the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling used bikes in the country. Yep, Harley’s venerable XL model outsells all other makes and models, and have been leading the list for quite some time. According to IHS Market Automotive data, in the first 10 months of 2018, there were 40,691 used XL1200 models sold, and 33,048 XL883s sold. Talk about a tremendous opportunity for the aftermarket. S&S Cycle is keenly aware of this market trend with the Sportster platform, and is even more clued into the buying demographic behind those sales – younger, entrylevel buyers looking for a fun motorcycle at an entry-level price. The Sportster fits that bill. With an eye firmly on that budget-conscious buyer – and on the likely decision they’ll be looking for a performance boost – S&S Cycle has lowered the cost of its popular Sportster Big-Bore Kits. “We love the Sportster market and absolutely get that the space is focused on a younger rider, with that in mind we did a deep dive into our XL Big-Bore line, looking to reduce cost without reducing quality or performance” says VP Marketing David Zemla. The S&S development team in Viola, WI dug in and went through every step of the manufacturing process to scrub out cost, with the sole intention of making these kits more
The development team at S&S went through every step of its manufacturing process to cut costs, but not quality, on the company’s Big-Bore Kits.

All of the kits are available in either 1200cc or 1250cc displacements. There are fitments for most 1986 through 2019 XL models. Finishes are color matched black or silver. With the average cost of a used Sportster coming in wellbelow $10,000, and closer to the $5,000 – Kelly Blue Book puts a 2010 XL883 Low at $4,940 – XL buyers aren’t looking to spend a bunch of cash, nor do they have a bunch of cash to spend. American-Made Parts THRASHIN has plenty of Americanmade foot controls, all constructed of aircraft-grade 6061 billet aluminum. Brake pedal pads, floorboards in two styles, foot pegs and shifter pegs are all part of the lineup. Parts like the P-54 slim foot pegs, available in driver and passenger fitments, really show off THRASHIN’s style.
Each of THRASHIN’s parts, including its range of handlebars, is made in the USA.
T
HRASHIN Supply Company parts don’t have to travel far to get from the drawing board to the production line. Hard parts such as handlebars, foot controls, engine covers and brake reservoir caps are all made in the USA. By keeping things close to home, THRASHIN is able to keep a close watch on the production of each part, monitoring the quality of the raw materials as well as the quality of the finished product. The materials are high-grade, certified domestic options, with 6061 aircraft-grade billet aluminum as the primary starting point for most THRASHIN hard parts. Each part is produced in a small batch, which makes quality control even easier. The THRASHIN team is able to take a hands-on approach, overseeing each detail, like ensuring the anodizing process includes sealing to prevent fade. And, by sticking to a small-batch production style, any errors that do occur are quickly caught and rectified. In addition to being made domestically, THRASHIN also keeps things in the family. Owner Lance Coury started the company when he and his friends wanted parts for their motorcycles that they just couldn’t get anywhere else. Coury’s father is a rider, too, and Coury turned to his machine shop to produce the parts that he designed. Making parts for himself and his friends turned into a business, and these days THRASHIN is still machining its parts on the CNC lathes and mills at the same shop. Dealers will find a number of THRASHIN parts in the FatBook, including handlebars that come in low-bend, mid-bend and high-bend configurations. The one-inch handlebars are drilled and slotted for internal wiring, and the throttle-by-wire keyholes allow late-style bike fitments. The bars are available in chrome and black.

Brake Line Compliance 101 A Guide to DOT Requirements
For Magnum Shielding, it’s all about motorcycle rider safety and ease of installation. This is why the company ensures that its braking products are 100 percent compliant with DOT FMVSS-106 safety requirements.
A
t Magnum Shielding Corporation, DOT Compliance, Product Quality, and Direct Fitment Compatibility are of the utmost importance. Why? because it’s all about motorcycle rider safety and ease of installation. Known for being brake line experts, Magnum’s 100 percent compliance with DOT FMVSS-106 safety requirements is important to the many dealers who confidently sell Magnum brake line products to their valued customers. Did you know that brake hose and brake line assemblies are among the most federally regulated components on a motorcycle? Compliance with DOT is the most reliable way to guarantee that brake lines sold for highway use will hold up to the demanding and harsh conditions they’re subjected to. The FMVSS-106 Standards require grueling tests which sometimes exceed what a vehicle will actually see in the real world, but this intentional overcompensation protects the rider from real life variables encountered in manufacturing, installations and usage. These “Torture Tests,” as Magnum calls them, are necessary to ensure brake lines withstand all mechanical, chemical and temperature influences they might encounter, as well as perform consistently in a wide range of seasonal temperatures with a predictable feel and ABS response for the rider. Not only do Magnum’s brake line constructions pass all these tests, but their test scores rank among the highest of the world’s manufacturers, according to the company. Talk about confidence. So, what are these tests and where are they conducted? Requiring sophisticated equipment, manufacturers most often use third-party testing labs for one-time validation and testing documentation. Magnum however, has duplicated the testing equipment right in-house and

performs FMVSS-106 testing on an ongoing basis for quality and process validation purposes. Aftermarket DOT brake lines must be properly labeled with stripes and symbol designations. • Volumetric Expansion measures the brake hose’s expansion under braking pressures. The lower the brake hose’s expansion the better the braking response will be and feel. Magnum says its industry low expansion is unsurpassed. • The Whip Test subjects the hose and fittings to enormous flex stresses by whirling at 800 rpm for 35 hours. Magnum lines endure for well over 50-plus hours. • Burst Strength requires the hose assembly to pressurize to 7,000 psi without bursting. Magnum exceeds 25,000 psi. • Tensile Strength stretches a brake hose assembly until either the fittings pull off or the hose tears. A fast pull requires no less than 370 lbs. • The High Temperature Impulse runs for five hours of repeated 295° F heat and 1,600 psi pressure cycling followed by a 5,000-psi burst. The Water Absorption soaks lines in water at 185° F for 70 hours before again conducting the Tensile, Burst, and Whip tests. There are five other tests and in all cases Magnum brake lines exceed all requirements. For Magnum Shielding, DOT compliance drives quality standards and supports its mission and dedication to total customer satisfaction and safe riding. The team at Magnum strives to be the best at what they do and is committed to providing the industry with the high-quality products that dealers have come to know and expect. ■

Ripper to Road-Tripper New Seats for the Softail Fat Bob
W
hen Harley-Davidson introduced its 10 new Softail platforms last year, the Mustang R&D team rolled up its sleeves and put its bluecollar Massachusetts work ethic to task. By the end of 2018, the hard work paid off to the tune of more than 30 new seats covering the entire Softail family, with the exception of the FXDR.
STANDARD TOURING
Mustang’s Standard Touring is ideal for average-sized riders comfortable with stock positioning, but want a significant upgrade in comfort and style. The premium expanded vinyl cover features a unique trapezoid design.
TRIPPER FASTBACK
The sporty Tripper Fastback positions riders lower and slightly further back than stock. Features include detailed stitch work with gunmetal thread and contrasting mesh gripper vinyl in lays.
WIDE TRIPPER The Wide Tripper fills the void between a sporty lowprofile solo and a longdistance touring seat.
With only two pairs of Softail models sharing a common seat pan (Heritage Classic and Deluxe, and Sport Glide and Low Rider) Mustang product development formulated a strategic hit list laying out which models to attack first. High on that list was the Fat Bob. Labeled one of the performance-minded Softail models, the Fat Bob can remain an aggressive ripper with Mustang’s Tripper Fastback, be transformed into a road tripper with the Standard Touring Solo, or settle somewhere in the middle with the Wide Tripper Solo – all of which are now available through Drag Specialties. Mustang’s Tripper Fastback features a sleek, low profile design that’s formed to feel as good as it looks. The lowcut driver area is 3 inches wider than stock for improved support in the hip area. The contoured driver bucket and high-rising wall offer excellent lower back support, keeping the operator planted in an aggressive but comfortable position. A streamlined passenger area keeps the low-profile look intact while providing an extra half-inch of width versus stock. To get as much long-haul comfort as possible out of the Fat Bob, the Standard Touring Solo and Passenger combo is the answer. The solo is a full 6 inches wider than stock. For maximum lumbar support, riders can opt for the solo with a fully adjustable and removable driver backrest. The receiver is built into the seat pan. The optional 11-inch wide passenger seats offer comfortable two-up riding with more padding and extra 5½ inches of width compared to stock. The passenger seat extends forward on solos without the driver backrest for added rider support, whereas Mustang’s recessed passenger seats are designed for use with the driver backrest. Also available for the Fat Bob is Mustang’s popular Wide Tripper solo, which places riders slightly lower than stock but at a similar reach to the controls. Offered with or without the built-in receiver to accept Mustang’s driver backrest, the Wide Tripper solo and separate passenger seats feature an additional 2½ inches of width for the driver and 4½ inches for passengers. Mustang’s proprietary controlled density polyurethane foam formula requires no break-in period and retains its shape and support after years of use. The marine-grade fiberglass baseplates, proprietary comfort foam and individually sewn covers are proudly handcrafted and assembled in their historic New England facility. ■

The feature-and-benefits list for the Cruisetec is long and impressive – new profiles and high-curvature contours, specialized compound recipes with unique layouts on both the front and rear tires and a performance-oriented tread pattern. The Metzeler Cruisetec should check off every box on a V-twin performance cruiser’s wish list. All of those performance-oriented features, and that specialized design means that sport-style riding V-twin customers can expect comfort and control in all conditions and speeds. With Cruisetecs on board the riding will be smooth, stable and seem almost effortless. There are tires set to deliver a lot in both looks and performance for your performance-minded Harley and Indian customers. The Cruisetec’s shape allows riders to easily take and maintain precise lines with seamless side-to-side transitions. It’s a profile design with a larger and more consistent footprint, a design aimed to deliver improved feedback in both mid- and full-lean situations.

The Metzeler Cruisetec carcass also features a lower cord end-count than typical V-twin tires. It’s another unique structural element that not only fulfills the support and stability requirements for a V-twin tire, but also allows for that larger footprint. It also results in an enhanced level of tire conformability to the road surface and any irregularities. The tires also offer an increased level of damping performance, grip and road feel here. Cruisetec’s maximized conformability to the road also minimizes groove wander, as well as any vague front-end feel. Metzeler has also kicked things up with new and specialized compound recipes for the Cruisetec. The Cruisetec utilizes high-rated plasticizers and silica from sport-touring technologies that are coupled with dual-compound rears and singlecompound fronts. This compound layout targets mileage and stability, in addition to all-around grip in both wet and dry conditions and high-speed performance. With the Cruisetec compound layouts there’s not only a higher level of braking and acceleration traction when cornering, that dual-compound rear allows for straight-line stability, traction and strength. With 80 percent of the upright footprint standing up straight on the harder center compound of that rear tire, all of that performance lasts for the lifespan of the tire.
In designing the Cruisetec, Metzeler made sure to create front and rear tread patterns that offer enhanced handling and high levels of grip in wet or dry conditions. Performance is meant to last throughout the tire’s life cycle.

The compound of the Cruisetec front tire is just as impressive. Equally performance-oriented, the Cruisetec fronts features a softer compound throughout, a compound custom blended and optimized to match the softer sidestrips of the dual-compound rear tire. The benefits here are
enhanced line-holding ability while leaned over through the curves, coupled with quick, precise directional control when upright. Both front and rear Cruisetec tread patterns have been designed for enhanced handling, immediate response, a high level of grip even in wet conditions, and consistent performance throughout the tire’s life cycle. The front and rear tread pattern layouts feature compound bridges adjacent to the grooves that are designed to control rubber deflection in the footprint under even the most extreme loadings. The tread pattern is designed to enhance stability overall. Cruisetec’s converging side grooves ensure immediate directional response, a quick warm-up and a strong mechanical grip. The diverging extended grooves in the patterns aid with braking efficiency, increase support and grip while leaned over, and interact effectively with electronic rider aids such as ABS. All of these features combined result in a tire built specially for your customers in that fast-growing performance-cruising V-twin segment. Whether they’re on Harley-Davidson Sportsters, Softails, Dynas, V-Rods, and even Touring bikes, or Indian Scout, Chief, Chieftain, Springfield, Roadmaster and Darkhorse models, the Cruisetec is made for them. ■

Not content with simple Sunday cruising, more and more V-twin riders are looking for tires that will perform well during hard riding through the twisties and canyons. The Cruisetec was built for them.

Introducing the Dillinger Collection
K
Available for 20042019 Sportsters, the Dillinger luggage rack system includes fixed mounting plates that install discreetly between the fender struts and rear fender for a clean look.
uryakyn is celebrating 30 years in 2019, and the new Dillinger collection is kicking off the company’s banner year with a bang.
By all accounts, the Dillinger aesthetic is a hard right from the original ISO-Grips that started it all for Kuryakyn in 1989. The same can be said for many recent designs coming out of Wisconsin. Kuryakyn’s product development has done a masterful job keeping its loyal customers coming back with fresh offerings, while also attracting new, younger generations of riders with more progressive designs like Dillinger.
The Dillinger headlight trim ring is a direct replacement for most Harley models with 5¾inch headlights and has a rugged grilled design that can be run horizontally or vertically.
Available for a variety of Harley-Davidson multi-fit and Sportster-specific applications, Dillinger design cues include pass-through styling, rugged modular construction and contrasting surface finishes for a tough and gritty industrial look. Finish options include satin black on textured black, or satin silver on textured black with zinc dichromate plating on visible hardware for additional distinctive contrast. Dillinger foot pegs utilize Kuryakyn’s model-specific splined adapters that offer a variety of fitment options and pinpoint foot peg positioning. The durable all-aluminum construction features a unique pass-through housing with raised top surface for traction, resulting in a lightweight but sturdy foundation for secure footing. Complementing the look is the Dillinger Shift Peg, available as a direct replacement for all Harley models.
Dillinger levers are cast from quality A380 aluminum with a slotted design and thin ergonomic profile for comfortable, controlled pullback. Currently available for all 2014-2019 Sportsters.
The Dillinger Luggage Rack proves that luggage racks don’t have to be run-of-the-mill. Designed for use with a solo seat, this fixed-mount rack system is capable of handling almost any type of luggage with its rigid three-piece design made from durable stamped steel. Stylized cutouts on the top and sides offer multiple secure attachment points for bungee cords or luggage straps, while a slight rise at the tail helps keep the load from sliding back.
Dillinger foot pegs are available with male-mount splined adapters as direct replacements for most Harley models, or without splined adapters for a variety of fitment using Kuryakyn’s model-specific splined adapters (sold separately).
Dillinger Handguards are constructed from a combination of high-impact injection-molded ABS and aluminum. This durable but lightweight solution to protecting your hands from debris or blocking cold air uses the mirror-stem bolt and mount on 2004-2019 XL models for easy installation. ■

Instant Upgrade: The Science of Seats More About Gel-Core Technology
Saddlemen has built a reputation among V-twin dealers and riders as a premium solution for seating comfort. The company also has a complete range of luggage and organizers perfect for every type of riding. Saddlemen seats mount just like stock seats, and swapping out an OEM seat for a Saddlemen model with Gel-Core Technology is one of the easiest ways to increase comfort and enhance the control of a motorcycle. Think of it as a performance upgrade for both bike and rider.
At the heart of Saddlemen’s Gel-Core Technology is its exclusive, high-tech SaddleGel material. The special polymer drastically reduces the road shocks and vibrations that can make a long motorcycle ride uncomfortable. The radical Step-Up seat features both.
Saddlemen CEO David Echert defines comfort as how long a rider can be in the seat. For him and the team at Saddlemen, that comes down to the numbers. The company’s Gel-Core Technology lets riders stay on the road up to 400 percent longer with 92 percent less road shock and 50 percent less road vibration compared to stock seats that only use foam. Gel-Core Technology is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy from the road, and it does so with co-molding technology, which is Saddlemen’s proprietary process of combining comfort foam, progressive density foam and SaddleGel into a single molded component.
F
eeling connected to a motorcycle and to the road really comes down to just three things – hands, feet and seat. Those key body parts maintain contact with the bike, which means they are the areas absorbing every bump and vibration along the way. The seat is where the majority of a rider’s weight meets the motorcycle, and that means it is the spot where the majority of shocks are felt. Saddlemen is dedicated to making seats that absorb those road impacts and vibrations so the rider’s body doesn’t, and it is the company’s proprietary Gel-Core Technology that is instrumental in keeping riders in the saddle longer without the fatigue and discomfort associated with foam seats.

SADDLEMEN
The nature of Gel-Core Technology allows each Saddlemen seat to conform to the body sitting on it, which helps to reduce pressure points and eliminate hot spots. In fancy terms, the seat is topographically neutral. Saddlemen achieves that neutrality for each seat design by experimenting with different tensions across the backrests and seats to determine the ultimate distribution pattern for the foam and gel. The experimenting goes beyond the seat design at Saddlemen, where chemists are actually on staff to oversee the gel’s unique makeup and production in-house at Saddlemen’s headquarters in Rancho Dominguez, CA. As the team at Saddlemen puts it, Gel-Core Technology is a scientific approach to motorcycle seats.
Your customers will also find Saddlemen’s unique Gel-Core Technology in the company’s solo seats.
SaddleGel is what is at the heart of Gel-Core Technology and the reason chemists are on hand. Officially known as a specially-formulated viscoelastic polymer, Saddlemen has, thankfully, given it the much simpler name of SaddleGel. The dampening and vibration diversion in a Saddlemen seat comes primarily from the SaddleGel, which has enough elasticity to conform to a rider’s body while still providing support. This results in reduced pressure points and better circulation, especially on long rides. Although Saddlemen believes a rider deserves better than a simple foam seat, foam is still an important element in creating a comfortable, cushioned ride. Saddlemen seats utilize ProFoam, a progressive density foam that provides a carefully-tuned balance between support and compliance. The foam is made up of varied cell sizes and types, all held in place by a skin that resists outside elements and seals the foam from water. The foam is not finished until the density and shape have been honed in for an ideal support structure. In all, Saddlemen’s co-molding technology can be broken down into three layers. The top sculpted layer of foam is closest to the rider’s body, providing shape, cushioning and a soft touch. Beneath that, the SaddleGel absorbs vibrations and shocks from the bike below while Saddlemen’s Gel-Core Technology helps reduce pressure points and hot spots, and leads to better circulation, even on long rides.

t may look like winter outside, but everyone in the Powersports industry knows that this is the prime time to start preparing for those first days of spring when business kicks off in full swing.
All across the country – yes, even in those areas where winter is merely a suggestion of a season – the industry is busy making plans for the return of riding weather. Dealers are looking for the new, hot products that will be big sellers, and the one place to see all those products under one roof is the Drag Specialties 2019 NVP Product Expo. Housed in a new location at the KICC Convention Center in Louisville, KY, the spring NVP Product Expo will be the place to be to get the scoop on those great V-twin goodies that will soon be lining dealership shelves. Not only is the space at the convention center the biggest show floor that Drag Specialties has ever used, the show will feature more than 250 vendors and 350 booths. This means more space filled with all the new riding gear, parts and accessories, and replacement pieces that your customers are seeking. “It’s going to be the biggest show the company has ever done,” said Jeff Derge, LeMans Corporation’s vice president of sales. “It’s the largest distributor show in America.”

Somehow, though, it’s those differences that make Jon and Bruce the ideal partners. As a Drag Specialties dealership, their shop, J&B Cycleworks in Conroe, TX, has become a thriving success in their local market just two years after opening its doors. In fact, the two dealers credit the distributor and

Drag rep Duke Durham for helping them get the store up and running. J&B Cycleworks is an independent motorcycle shop that works on all types of motorcycles. Jon and Bruce opened the shop in 2016 to service all brands of motorcycles, with a strong emphasis on giving customers an outstanding experience. Bruce is a relative latecomer to motorcycling. He didn’t start riding until he was in his late 30s, and his

After graduation, Bruce and his wife Nelly moved to Texas, where Bruce found a home working on the Harley-Davidson side at a multi-line dealership group. Unlike Bruce, Jon grew up in a motorcycling family. “Around 10 or 12 years old, my dad and I got an old XR70 out of a friend’s barn that was just absolutely atrocious. We got it running, but didn’t change a thing. The muffler was falling off. I’ve been riding ever since,” Jon says. He’s owned 22 motorcycles since then, and it was no surprise that after high school he headed to Wyotech in Daytona Beach, FL. Jon graduated at the top of his class. Jon wound up working for the same dealership group as Bruce, but he was on the metric side of things. Working together at the store, the two started getting to know each other. Before long, they started discussing their ideas for a shop. “We decided the only way to make anything out of our careers was to own our own business,” Bruce explains. “I had a background in manufacturing, floor work, factory labor, and I wanted to apply that to the motorcycle industry.”
introduction to the lifestyle was less than traditional. “I owned a barbeque restaurant in Elizabeth, NJ, and I got baptized into the motorcycle groups by renting my garage space to an outlaw biker gang,” Bruce says. “I bought a basket case motorcycle from them, put it together – they helped me with it – and I rode it and had a great time.” Fast forward a decade or two, and Bruce found himself the VP of operations at a textile plant. Worn out, stressed out and ready for a change after 18 years, he quit his job and attended the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute Phoenix, where he graduated as a 4.0 student. In addition, he was named S.O.C. (Student of the Course) nine times. “Being 50 years old and seeking an entry-level position in the motorsports industry, I knew that I would have to be one better than the next guy looking for that same entry-level technician’s job,” Bruce says.

As the plans developed for the two to open a shop together, customer service and attention to detail became a focus, as well as the ability to service all makes and models. “We knew that in order to do something in this industry, we were going to have to be able to service cycle riders, not just motorcycles. With Jon’s background in the metric world and with my background in the Harley world, we just figured it was a great combination,” Bruce says. So, in March of 2016, J&B Cycleworks opened its doors. Bruce was 56 at the time, and Jon was just 26. When the shop opened, it was taking up 1,800 square feet in a 6,000-square-foot building. Just 90 days later, the shop expanded to fill another 1,400 square feet. In July of 2018, the space grew again to a total of 4,800 square feet. Word spread quickly about J&B Cycleworks, and shortly after opening, Jon and Bruce found themselves working seven days a week for at least 10 hours a day. Since then, they have added a full-time technician, a part-time technician and a shop assistant to help out. Their goal is to have five full lifts and another fulltime tech operating by March.

Jon and Bruce want to keep that personal aspect of the operation. “Jon and I are the face of this company,” Bruce says. “So, no matter how we split up the responsibilities, or how many people we have working for us, everyone who comes in the door knows they can walk up to an owner of the company, and the owner of the company is going to give them advice, and the owner of the company is going to work on their bike.”
■
Drag Specialties sales rep Duke Durham (left) is a trusted advisor for co-owners Bruce Kain (center) and Jon Baloun.
And even though they’re working on bikes, J&B Cycleworks is about a lot more than just motorcycles. As Bruce says, “You have to be dedicated to what you’re doing, and you have to believe that the customer is number one.” ■
Both Jon and Bruce attribute their quick success to a combination of hard work and, most importantly, attention to detail and customer service. “We’re willing to go that little extra mile and pay that little extra attention to detail,” Jon says. For example, if a customer is having new wheels installed but the tech realizes the brake pads are worn, oftentimes the customer will be charged for new pads, but not for the labor to install them. Or if a customer is having work done and one of them notices a missing bolt, they’ll go ahead and replace it. For Bruce, the formula for success is an easy one: “If you go above and beyond what a customer is used to getting, you’ve got a customer forever,” he says.
DEALERSHIP PROFILE
But, as every business owner knows, success doesn’t come without some sacrifices. Making J&B Cycleworks a reality meant that Jon and Bruce had to put their personal lives – and their personal space – on hold for a while. “We basically opened the place on a shoestring budget,” Bruce says. “Jon and his girlfriend moved into our house because we knew we wouldn’t have salaries and we’d have to save money somewhere. We started the business, we moved in together, and we lived with each other for six months, until we had enough income to take a paycheck and at least get our own places to live.” Living and working together wasn’t always easy. Bruce notes that “partners have to learn how to work together. We decided we were going to be 50/50 partners, so working through differences in a partnership is probably one of the most difficult things to accomplish.” Another early hurdle for J&B Cycleworks was knowing which parts and how many of them to stock. With that shoestring budget, Jon and Bruce had to be careful in their selections. They relied heavily on the advice of their Drag Specialties rep Durham, and they took advantage of special offers from Drag vendors, like product bundles that included free displays.
J&B Cycleworks is a full-service shop that services both V-twin and metric bikes. The number one focus at the Conroe, TX dealership is customer service.
J&B Cycleworks was working with Drag even before the shop’s doors opened to the public; Bruce would send his rep photos

hen they’re rolling under a factory Bagger, custom wheels make a custom Harley-Davidson. Little question about that, and in many cases Coastal Moto’s wildly popular cast wheels, the Largo and Atlantic, put this major swap into the affordability range of many.
Having been at it for more than 10 years, Coastal Moto is no stranger to custom forged wheels. What’s new here is the new design of the Fuel, Fury and Rockstar and their 3D hubs that, bolt-for-bolt, accept those stock-style 2014 and later floating perimeter-ring rotors.
Seeing is believing. Coastal Moto’s Fury wheel in black provides a factory Bagger an instant upgrade in style.
Now there’s a lineup of three new forged wheels from Coastal Moto, custom wheels also aimed at those 2000 and newer Harley Touring machines. Like those first round of wheels from the company, these new models are designed to save riders some serious money. Drag Specialties has these budget-minded beauties right now. The Fuel, Fury and Rockstar are all forged and available either chrome plated or with an exclusive Black Cut finish. They are offered in four front sizes ranging from 19-inches to 26-inches, in ABS or non-ABS versions and two rears, 16-inches and 18-inches.
If the wheels are being purchased for a 2013 and older bike those new-style rotors will be required, but there’s a price and performance bonus to be had here; those latestyle perimeter rotors are just $199.95 each and they’re full-floating, a braking upgrade all by themselves.
The wheels are delivered ready for mounting with the bearings supplied and installed. The Fuel, Fury and Rockstar wheels are also ready to accept the 2014 and later

Softail Suspension
Upgrading the Milwaukee-Eight Models suspensions of the past. All this translated into a Softail-model Harley with a more responsive and more controlled ride, new suspension to go with all that new Milwaukee-Eight power.
The 465 Series R.A.P. Shock allows your Softail customers to dial in their suspension for a custom-fit ride. This version also comes with a mounting bracket for the remote adjustor.
Good as all this is, Progressive Suspension has set out to make it better with the 465 Series Softail Shock and 465 Series R.A.P. (Remote Adjustable Preload) Shock. Both are state-of-the-art performance upgrades designed especially for those new-model Milwaukee-Eight Softails. A high-pressure gas monotube design, they both feature an oversize 46mm bore with deflective-disc damping and five-position rebound adjustment, something not available OE and allowing the 465s to be dialed-in to rider preference. The 465’s custom-wound springs, engineered specifically for these Softail applications, are offered in Standard and Heavy-Duty rates, heavyduty recommended when rider, passenger and load routinely exceeds 250 pounds.
With the 465 Series Shocks, Progressive Suspension is focused on improving the ride and handling for the latest generation Harley-Davidson Softails.
By making the most of that Harley-Davidson frame-and-swingarm redesign, and by including five-position rebound adjustment, the 465 Series shocks can further enhance a Milwaukee-Eight Softail’s ride quality and comfort. They will also improve the overall feeling of control and deliver quick, responsive reaction to road irregularities, large and small.
W
hen Harley-Davidson set out to integrate Milwaukee-Eight power into an expanded Softail lineup, the design goals included improved ride and handling to go with that multi-valve horsepower. Towards that end the bikes got redesigned frames and swingarms, retaining the classic Softail look but now coming in a lighter, stiffer and stronger package. The Softails also got a revised suspension system, a nitrogencharged mono-shock that was a significant step up from

Fat Baggers, Inc. has been at it since 2004, building customized Baggers and Trikes. You’ve likely seen the company’s eye-catching designs in titles such as Hot Bike.
TIME FOR A CHANGE FA S T E Z I N S TA L L B A R S
T
ime has always played an important role for Fat Baggers, Inc. owner Gary Chipp. Back in 2004, he got started in the custom Bagger market at just the right time to be at the forefront of the trend. Now, with the company’s EZ Install handlebars, it’s all about saving time for dealers, with a design that makes installing wiring quick and easy. Drag Specialties is the distributor for the Fat Baggers, Inc. EZ Install handlebars in both pointed and round tops, as well as complete EZ Install handlebar kits. In all, there are 72 new part numbers that cover applications for the 10inch, 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch high bars. One of the things that makes the handlebars so distinctive also helps make them easier to install. “That top-pointed feature is a non-welded joint, and that non-welded joint is what has allowed us to have a large internal machined wiring cavity in it, which allows us to pull the wires within minutes inside the tubing, even on older model motorcycles,” says Chipp. On both the pointed and round bars, the internal construction has that non-welded top corner for easy wire pulling. The design was first put into use for Fat Baggers workers. When they started doing on-site installations

at bike rallies, the staff needed to get the work done as quickly and efficiently as possible since the customers were usually waiting. “In our first round of product, we were building the handlebar conventionally, just like everybody else, and they didn’t install nearly as easily as what we wanted,” Chipp says. “So that’s what put our brains to work, and we started developing a new process to make that toppointed feature.” The EZ Install handlebars are sturdy CNC machined, mandrel-bent billet steel with a 1¼-inch diameter and a 0.120-inch wall thickness. Chipp says that making the bars is a labor-intensive process, but well worth it for the end result. His team can install a set of bars in as little as 30 minutes, and the design means that there is no danger of snagging and damaging a wire while pulling it through the bars. The handlebars are available with a chrome or a gloss black powder coated finish. They are constructed at Fat Baggers’s headquarters in Iowa, carrying on the company’s Made in the USA tradition.

the existing lines, late-model Harleys with linked braking become much easier to work with since there is no need to bleed the brakes. It also means that independent motorcycle shops can easily install the handlebars.
One of the time-saving features of the handlebars is the cable system for the taller heights. Those taller bars need longer lines than stock, but Fat Baggers sees no reason to replace the entire setup, which just requires more time and work.
“We have a bleeder inside the fairing on the bike and we only have to bleed a short section of line, which we can do in minutes per side,” Chipp explains. “We can put on a set of 14-inch handlebars, start to finish, in under two hours on a late-model motorcycle, which is just unheard of. It saves the consumer money with our kits and our product, which makes it more affordable to get the product installed. It also makes the shops more money because

they are able to flat-rate these installs and they actually get ahead of the flat rate instead of behind the flat rate.” The handlebars are made with a patented two-piece construction that bolts together via a solid clamping area that ensures a strong and safe connection. The two-piece design means that the packaging is half the size of standard handlebars, saving dealers a lot of space and freight cost. These days, Fat Baggers is focused solely on handlebar production, but the company’s origin was in wide tire kits. Chipp grew up in a motorcycling family that has owned dealerships since 1973. Chipp’s father Bob has been a franchise Harley-Davidson dealer since 1984. Unsurprisingly, Chipp followed in his family’s footsteps, but he leaned more toward parts manufacturing and custom builds. When a customer came along asking for a bolt-on fat tire kit for a Road Glide in 2004, Chipp started calling around to find someone who made them. He came up empty, so he decided to do it himself. He had never seen a wide tire on a Bagger before, and as he soon found out, neither had anyone else. “We went after that project, and bought a few pieces of equipment,” Chipp says. “We did this in our Harley dealership, fabricated the whole bike and took it to Daytona Bike Week the following spring.”

That Bike Week was in the spring of 2005, and Chipp was flagged down by an editor of Hot Bike Magazine to do a photo shoot and feature story. The article was titled “Fat Bagger,” and Chipp figured it was a fitting name for the company. Chipp’s newly-dubbed business was launched right as the custom Bagger craze was starting. The Fat Baggers wide tire kit took off, and since then the company has been a big player in the aftermarket Bagger scene. Not long after setting up shop, Chipp bought a semi so he and his team could travel to bike rallies across the U.S., doing on-site installs. It was from those first-hand experiences that Chipp realized the need for handlebars that looked good and installed without hassle. Now, that has been packaged into a kit so dealers can enjoy the same convenience. Check the FatBook for the full list of applications available through Drag Specialties. ■

or many of your customers, motorcycling doesn’t end just because the calendar pages have flipped through to the winter months. These are the riders who know how to outfit themselves, and their bikes, for cold-weather riding. They’re also the customers who will be glad to hear that after two years of extensive research, design and testing, Avon’s Heated Grips are back on the market. Warm hands can make a huge difference in the enjoyment of a fall or winter ride and the newly-redesigned Avon Heated Grips can deliver exactly that. These Heated Grips are available in Avon’s Air Cushion, Custom Contour and Velvet Air styles. Finishes include anodized or chrome, and the end-cap choices are Boss, Excalibur, Gatlin, Rival, Spike, and Super Sport. In addition to the Harley-Davidson fitments for everything from Sportsters to Baggers to Trikes, there are also Heated Grips for Indian Scouts and Chieftains. Installation of the Avon Heated Grips is simple. The newly revised switch replaces the top half of the clutch perch

(with the exception of 2015 and newer Road Glides) and the actual small controller box for the heated grips can be mounted inside the fairing, under the gas tank, even inside the headlight compartment on a Road King. There’s a wiring diagram included in every kit. Notably, power for the heated-grips comes off the bike’s accessory wire, thus preventing the heating pads inside the grips from remaining on after the motorcycle is shut down. As easy as the Avon Heated Grips are to install, they’re easier yet to operate. That newly revised switch replacing the top half of the clutch perch is an old-school rocker switch with High, Low, and Off settings. It couldn’t be any simpler. In the Low setting the grips quickly become toasty warm, just the thing for an early-morning or late-evening ride. Flip that switch over to High and those grips get hot, so hot that you’ll want gloves on. Either way, on Low or High, icy-cold hands and fingers become a non-issue. ■

New Harnesses and Modules
NAMZ/Badlands has new harnesses and modules designed to make it easier to perform electrical upgrades for Indian Scouts and a number of Harley-Davidson models. There’s also a specialized ignition harness for converting early EFI Twin Cam engines to carburetion.
S
olving electrical puzzles has confounded motorcycle riders for generations. However, with help from NAMZ and Badlands, customers with older bikes can keep them on the road longer.
modules allow turn signal lights to flash sequentially, and use a built-in load equalizer so they can function as run/brake/turn lights.
The company’s plug-and-play replacement harnesses, modules and connectors have made life easy for anyone customizing the lighting on later-model bikes.
The static modules will drive three individual LEDs per side. When either the left or right turn signal buttons are pressed, each LED will illuminate separately and stay illuminated until all three are lit before starting the sequence over again.
Latest on this list are new harnesses and modules for Indian Scouts and a number of Harley-Davidson models. These new products will help make those electrical upgrades a snap. Also on that list is a specialized ignition harness for converting early EFI Twin Cam engines to carburetion.
The dynamic module does something similar, except that each of the three LEDs will flash on/off before starting the sequence over again. With either module the bike’s flasher will self-cancel as it normally does. The modules will drive any LED light, including those NAMZ Royal Flush LEDs.
Innovators when it comes to customizing the Indian Scout, Brian Klock and the Klock Werks crew inquired about a product that would make it easy to upgrade the lighting on that popular model motorcycle. NAMZ and Badlands responded with the new IHL-IND-S customlighting module for that bike.
Finally, there’s the NAMZ and Badlands NSAIH-01 Stand Alone Ignition Harness. With the advent of the MilwaukeeEight, earlier Twin Cams motors are becoming popular for custom installations and many builders are converting them to carburation.
This plug-and-play Tail Light Eliminator allows aftermarket taillights to work in Run/Brake/Turn mode without triggering a trouble code. They’re easily installed and use factory-labeled connectors, and will also work with OEM turn signals. This kit comes complete with a module and rear-fender harness. For Harley-Davidsons, there are dynamic or static sequential modules and Royal Flush LED lights. These

With this new harness from NAMZ and Badlands, there is no need to cut up a factory harness and hope that the bike starts. The Stand Alone Ignition Harness works with all 2004 to 2006 OEM-style or Screaming Eagle ignition modules, the Daytona Twin Tec TC88A or Dyna 2000 TC-3. It’s also a quick-and-easy solution when converting a Twin Cam motor with a crank-position sensor. ■

BRAKE PADS

Drag’s Premium Sintered Brake Pads
Drag Specialties Premium Sintered Metal Brake Pads are made by DP Brakes to provide long-lasting performance, as well as no dust, no noise and no fade reliability.
The Drag Specialties Premium Sintered Metal Brake Pads feature a sintered compound that was designed specifically for Harley-Davidsons. Available in front and rear fitments for virtually all disc brake Harley models, each set of brake pads arrives display-ready in Drag’s attractive Premium packaging. The premium sintered pads are more durable than stock, lasting up to three times longer than their OEM counterparts. The sintered compound also provides improved stopping power over OEM pads, giving riders better braking confidence. The pad backing plate is topped with a high-tech ceramic heat shield that keeps heat away from the caliper piston and brake fluid. The cooler operating temperatures mean that the brakes will not fade, even under heavy or frequent braking. In all, the Drag Specialties Premium Brake Pads result in no brake dust, no noise and no brake fade. Whitewalls and chrome wheels stay clean, and braking is consistent time after time. The brake pads might be premium, but that doesn’t mean they come with a premium price tag. Drag Specialties offers competitive pricing as well as very attractive margins for the dealer. A description of brake pads doesn’t usually involve a World History lesson, but an exception has to be made in this case. The military aircraft flown during World War II were still using expanding drum brakes. As planes got heavier and faster, it became clear that a better, lighter braking system was necessary. British company Dunlop Aviation developed the disc brake by the late 1940s. In 1955, the company introduced its sintered metal disc brake pads to the aviation industry. The potential applications for sintered pads outside of aviation were obvious, and the British government tasked Dunlop Aviation with developing sintered disc brake technology for motorcycle applications.
D
rag Specialties takes the definition of Premium very seriously. When it comes to Drag’s Premium Sintered Metal Brake Pads by DP Brakes, the word means performance, longevity and reliability. It also means no dust, no noise and no fade. DP Brakes has been the only exclusive brake pad supplier to Drag Specialties since 1998, fostering a long-term relationship between manufacturer, distributor and dealers that emphasizes excellent customer service.

PERFORMANCE TUNERS
Power Tuning
Custom Mapping for Indians
With the Power Vision CX, custom tuning an Indian Scout or Thunderstroke 111-powered bike is a snap. A simple flash of the ECU, and those bikes will release previously hidden horsepower and torque.

hether a bike has all of its factory hardware in place or if it’s been customized with pipes, intakes and cams, it’s going to benefit from a custom-mapping of the ECU. Optimizing the tune makes for an efficiently running V-twin and a bike that’s more fun to ride. With the Power Commander V and Power Vision CX, Dynojet has the tuning devices to get the absolute best out of Indian Motorcycle’s Thunderstroke 111 engine and its Scout range. The Power Commander V is the latest in a long line of Power Commanders and it allows for some pretty serious adjustability for performance. Whether the new tune is coming from an easily accessed and installed pre-written Dynojet program, or it’s a custom map being worked out on a dyno for a specific bike, the Power Commander V can do it. With a modified map a Scout will be snappier and a Chief ready to rip. The Power Commander V is easy to install and adjust and it allows customized fuel delivery and ignition timing from the warm-up adjustments to full-throttle operation. The Power Commander V is also capable of mapping each cylinder individually and every gear/ speed combination. Among its other capabilities, the Power Commander V can build adjustment tables based on analog input such as boost or temperature, and there’s a two‑position

map‑switching function built in, something made even easier to access with an optional Power Commander V Map Selector Switch. Dynojet’s Power Vision CX is also available for the Indians, meaning the Scouts, Scout Sixties and Thunderstroke 111s are just a flash away from releasing previously hidden horsepower and torque. No extra modules or devices are required with the Power Vision CX. The Power Vision CX interfaces with the OEM ECU through the bike’s diagnostic connector. This allows reading of the original tune (which can always be restored) along with the ability to flash new pre-written Dynojet performance tunes. Available for popular aftermarket modifications, the tunes optimize fueling and timing for individual applications and available fuels. Fuel delivery and ignition timing are optimized, rev limits and speed limits are raised, torque limiting functions reduced or eliminated and there are revised drive‑by‑wire throttle profiles. Customers can view all of this relevant data on Power Vision CX’s high‑contrast display. For shops and advanced tuners, Power Vision CX’s suite of included Power Core software provides all the tools to perform custom tuning and further optimize performance. ■

Slippery Business Upgraded Oiling Systems
Feuling has good, better and best options when it come to upgrading the lubrication systems on Harley-Davidson Twin Cam and MilwaukeeEight motorcycles.
G
ood, better, best. That’s a quick rundown of the OE+, HP+ and Race Series Oiling System Kits from Feuling Parts and there’s not a wrong choice in the bunch.
Oil is the lifeblood of a Harley-Davidson and upgrading the lubrication system is maybe one of the most important steps your customers can take to ensure a long, strong life for their bikes. It’s a really important step for MilwaukeeEight bikes given that motor’s particular needs. The most affordable move is those OE+ packages. Coming with an OE+ billet oil pump and matched OE+ billet camplate they’re available for all the Twin Cams and a definite upgrade from stock. The kits deliver significantly increased oil pressure and scavenge volumes. An OE+ upgrade is a big step in the right direction, and if that TC is a pre-2007 model, including a Feuling Hydraulic Cam-Chain Tensioner Conversion to replace those spring-loaded tensioners with late-style hydraulics is a no-brainer. Stepping up a few bucks gets the HP+ and Race Series Kits, available for both the Twin Cams and the Milwaukee-Eights. The HP+ kits come with a precisionmachined 6061 billet aluminum high-volume oil pump, the Race Series uses a billet 7075 hard-anodized pump. Both kits include Feuling’s High Flow billet camplate made from 7075 aluminum which is 50 percent harder and stronger than the factory camplates. With its enlarged reservoirs and passages it increases oil flow and volume to the lifters, piston cooling jets, crankshaft and rod bearings. Both kits come with new lifters (the Race Series lifters featuring a full .200-inch travel with a slow bleed-down) along with all the gaskets, seals and hardware for a full installation. Any rider contemplating a winter-time upgrade session shouldn’t overlook any of this. Milwaukee-Eight riders, especially, would be well served with a Feuling Oiling System Kit. ■

Quality Where it Counts It’s a labor-intensive job and for that reason choosing a belt that’s as good or tougher than OE is of paramount importance. That’s where Belt Drives Ltd. comes in. BDL has quality replacement rear drive belts, all the lengths, widths and tooth counts to fit virtually every American V-twin on the road.
W
hen Harley-Davidson made the switch to a belt final drive, that 1981 FXB Sturgis model had eyebrows raised. Was a belt really better than a chain? Was it strong enough, would it last? The answers have been pretty conclusive. Not only are those belts strong enough, they’re also cleaner, quieter, more efficient and they last – just not forever. As good as a belt final-drive is it’ll eventually need replacement, and fitting that new belt isn’t exactly a walk in the park.
BDL has all the quality replacements, all the lengths, widths and tooth counts to fit virtually every American Vtwin on the road. There are rear-drive belts from 125 teeth up to 140 teeth including the 133- and 134-tooth belts for the latest-model Harley-Davidsons, widths covering all applications. They’re all premium High-Torque Polyurethane Synchronous Belts, all featuring tough carbon/carbon-fiber cording and available with the distinctive top ribbing like OEM or with a smooth top for a clean look. Remember that when changing a rear-drive belt, the reardrive pulley needs to be closely inspected. If there’s any sign of wear, common when there are 30,000 to 40,000 miles on the bike, replacement is warranted to prevent premature belt failure, notes BDL. ■

Mid-Rise Bars with Style
T
here have been a number of Ken’s Factory parts in the pages of the FatBook for a while now, but one category that was missing was handlebars. Ken’s Factory showed off samples of its new mid-rise bars for baggers during a recent NVP show, where dealers kept asking, “When?” The answer is, of course, now.
The new mid-rise bars feature Ken’s Factory’s signature styling, and provide comfortable positioning for a rider’s hands. There are cable and throttleby-wire versions available in chrome or black.
As with every Ken’s Factory part, the motto of “Details Create Style” had a big influence on the design of the mid-rise bars. The gracefully curved bars have comfortable positioning for a rider’s hands, but a closer look shows that there is more to the design. The bars have fluted cuts that follow the lines of the bars to create an elegant but subtle bit of detailing. Stamped Ken’s Factory logos sit on either side of the clamping area.

The mid-rise bars are designed for a 1-inch clamp, and finish options include chrome or black. On the black bars, the Ken’s Factory logo is stamped in chrome for a small pop of contrast.
