Carey Hart by D on Em de

Our newest reader!

Our photographer Kinney Jones captured the moment at the Mammoth Motocross in 2005 when Pink gave Carey the best pit signal of his racing career.

I

n this issue we announce the addition of Carey Hart to the Drag Specialties team. See page 10 to read about his long and varied background in the motorcycle sport. Most of you, I suspect, already follow his many motorcycling activities on social media, including his reports from events, Hooligan races, Good Ride Rallies and more. Others may recall his accomplishments as a pro motocross rider in the late-1990s, which led to him becoming one of the pioneers of then-emerging Freestyle motocross. Unlike racing, Freestyle is not about being the fastest rider, it’s about what you can do with a motorcycle...primarily when it is in the air. He broke some bones learning how, but in 2000 Hart became the first rider ever to perform a backflip in competition. Carey is married to Pink, the world-famous singer who has won three Grammy Awards and sold millions of records. She shares Carey’s passion for motorcycle riding and has her own Indian Scout waiting for her in the garage when she is not away on tour. The couple met in Philadelphia in 2001 where he was competing in the X-Games. Meeting her there was definitely the highlight of that event for Carey. His challenging backflip stunt went wrong that time and he suffered several broken ribs and other bones in a violent crash. She was not deterred by Hart’s occupation and the relationship

continued, leading up to a very unique marriage proposal in June of 2005. They were at a motocross race at Mammoth Lakes, CA with Carey racing and Pink handling the pit board to show him what place he was running in or his lap times. Then, as he came around on one of his laps she held out the pit board where she had written, “Will you marry me?” Unfortunately, another rider blocked his view and he didn’t see the board. So a few laps later, she tried it again, this time adding “Serious!” to her message. He saw it that time and the next lap pulled out of the race to stop and happily accept her proposal. They have since had two children, daughter Willow and son, Jameson, and the four enjoy motorized activities often on their ranch in Central California. Willow is 8 years old and rides her own mini bike on the private track that Carey built, while 2 ½-year-old Jameson has to be content for now as a passenger in the B17-style sidecar. Looking ahead, watch for Carey at the Drag truck at places like Sturgis or Daytona, the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride or NVP. The man knows how to ride a motorcycle and will surely be a great asset to Drag Specialties in many ways. ■

Welcome Carey Hart.

Jeff Derge, Vice President of Marketing for LeMans Corporation, said, “We welcome Carey Hart as a brand promoter of all things Drag Specialties and Indian. Over the years Carey has used the FatBook and Indian catalogs as his ‘go-to’ source when needing parts for his custom builds and service needs, so this is a natural fit in having him promote Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited as his official parts suppliers.” Hart brings a very diverse background to his new role. His motorcycling experiences date back to his years as a professional motocross racer and history-making Freestyle performer. At the Gravity Games in 2000, he attempted the

first-ever back flip in a competition. This opened the door for others to follow and helped get the Freestyle segment of the sport televised on ABC and ESPN. When his professional racing days had ended, Carey moved from the motocross tracks to the streets, trading in his offroad machines for road bikes. He also kept himself busy running both a Supercross racing team and an off-road truck racing team, partnering in a tattoo business, and hosting televised motorsports events. It is his history of racing that makes Hart’s story and involvement so unique. He loves to ride and to try things on his road bikes that worked for him on the racetracks. He wants his motorcycles to look good, but more important is they need to perform. Carey’s recent King Killer Indian project is a good example of his approach to getting motorcycles setup

the way he wants them to ride. He brought together a team of professionals and friends—using a 2018 Indian Springfield as their “pallet”—to reimagine a modern Indian motorcycle back to its original racetrack roots. The King Killer took home the Red, White & Blue award for “Best American Build” at the recent One Moto Show in Portland, OR. In addition to occasionally competing in Hooligan races, one of Carey’s biggest ongoing projects are his Good Ride Rallies. With the support of Indian and other companies, Good Ride Rallies are fundraisers with all proceeds going to benefit veterans thru the Infinite Hero 501(c)3 charity organization. In addition to Phoenix and Sturgis, a third Good Ride Rally connected with the AIMExpo in Columbus has just recently been announced. More info at: www.GoodRideRally.com. ■

NEWS EVENTS Spring Breakout! 2019 AFT SERIES UPDATE

F

oul weather cancelled two American Flat Track Mile races earlier this season – Sacramento, CA, and Springfield, IL, both rescheduled for late-summer – but even those two glitches couldn’t put a damper on the AFT’s other seven events run so far this season. With the season nearing the half-way mark Drag Specialties/ Parts Unlimited/Indian team members account for three of the top six riders in the point standings. Briar Bauman leads everybody, with teammate and defending AFT champ Jared Mees third and Bauman’s younger brother Bronson, sitting sixth. After getting the holeshot in four different stop-starts during the AFT Twins main at the Laconia Short Track, Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Bronson Bauman earned his first-ever National win as an AMA Expert rider. Photo by Scott Hunter/American Flat Track

The troops then headed east, stopping at Lexington, KY, for the Red Mile, a race won by Mees in 2017 and 2018. Would he make it three in a row? First, though, a note about the Red Mile, a track that in many ways mimics the old San Jose Mile of the 1970s and ’80s. Old-timers recall that track as a place where late-race drafting decided the outcome of many a National race. And like San Jose, the entries to Turns One and Three at the Red Mile also differ from each other, a factor that shuffles lead changes even more during a Singles race.

But, it’s how the racing played out earlier this year that’s been so riveting for fans. Here’s a recap of what happened, and if you and your customers missed it, here’s a closer look at AFT racing. In both the Twins and Singles categories, it has developed into some of the closest and most exciting motorcycle racing currently running. If you haven’t been able to attend a race in person, the action is only a click away, streamed live www.fanschoice.tv and broadcast nationally on NBCSN’s television network. We last left off at the Arizona Super TT in Chandler, AZ where Briar finished second for the second time in a row. Briar was starting a pattern, which continued at Perris, CA, for the So Cal Half Mile, where he finished in second place again. Hold on, there’s more. Mees fought his way to fifth at the Perris half-mile oval, with Bauman the Younger – aka Bronson – sixth, a position he also held after the Arizona Super TT.

And in the Red Mile Singles race, Drag Specialties/ Parts Unlimited/KTM rider Shayna Texter had her hands full dicing with Mike Rush. In the end Texter finished a very close second place, reminding everybody that her Texas Half Mile win is not to be discounted. The Red Mile Twins race proved just as exciting with Briar Bauman chasing down teammate Mees for the lead. It clearly was Bauman’s best-ever Mile race, trailing Mees by less than 0.06-seconds at the finish to put him on the box for the first time at a Mile. “I’m probably more excited than Jared is right now,” he proclaimed, while Mees reveled in his third win in a row there. Meanwhile, Mees had the next race – the Laconia Short Track – on his mind, because he knew that the New Hampshire race was going to pose problems for everybody. As he pointed out, Laconia “is probably the smallest National [race] we’ve ever run the Twins on. Good starts are going to be important.” continued on page 14...

Times are tight, Space is limited & Less is more.

Mees’ words proved prophetic, too, and this year’s Laconia race also happened to be the place where Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Bronson Bauman came of age as an AMA Expert rider. We can start with the hole shot he performed at the start, launching quickly into Turn One to lead the pack. He continually stretched his lead until a crash forced a red flag, temporarily halting the race to clear the debris. Bronson duplicated his hole shot at the re-start, again commanding a lead until a second red flag. Pause, now, while the field lines up again in staggered single file formation, green flag drops and Bronson hole shots again, leading until, wait, none other than brother Briar passes him exiting Turn One. And what’s this again? Another red flag, third for the race, and according to rules the riders are relegated to their positions from the previous lap, which meant that Bronson was positioned up front for the third restart, Briar right behind him. Green flag drops and Bronson got his fourth hole shot of the day, leading the field home to his first-ever National race win as an Expert. In essence he led from start-to-start-to-start-to-start-to-finish. An interesting way to cop a first win, and it was even more meaningful because he nipped his brother, Briar, at the line, in the process making that five second-place finishes in a row for Bauman the Elder. “This track had zero room for error,” reported Briar after the race. As for the elated Bronson, he seemed to take a page from his brother’s Red Mile post-race script when he said, “I have no idea how I pulled this off, but I’m stoked.” xxxxxx

Stoked. Yep, that could be the buzz word for any and every AFT race completed this year. Maybe it’s time to get your dealership involved in some way with flat track racing. In the process it might, on any Sunday, stoke more than a few of your customers. Even if it happens to be raining outside.

hen guests at Jim Thiessen’s retirement party in Camarillo, CA in June were invited to say a few words about the founder of the company, one of the speakers insisted that “USA” be repeated by the group every time the company name – JIMS – was spoken. And that, in a nutshell, captures the unfailing and inherent focus of Jim Thiessen, a man who 50 years ago aimed his stalwart work ethic toward precision machining to produce high-quality performance parts, tools and complete V-Twin engines. Jim started his career as a machinist in the aerospace industry and soon turned his attention to V-twin motorcycles in the 1970s after doing some work for some riding friends. JIMS soon became a sought-after name for pro repair technicians and home-garage mechanics alike. Don’t expect any blips in the company’s services with its founder now retired. The Thiessen family along with a trusted cadre of long-term employees will continue his legacy. And, chances are, Jim will still come to the shop most days as he adjusts to his new normal. ■

inco de Mayo (or Fifth of May) is a date that celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over Napoleonic forces in 1862. As holidays go it is an easy one, with little more than beer and barbeque among friends to mark the occasion. Seeing an opportunity to kick their bi-annual chopper run into high gear, the folks at Biltwell chose Cinco de Mayo this year to host their eighth El Diablo Run. For neophytes on the hardcore chopper scene, the El Diablo Run is a motorcycle ride Biltwell co-founders “Barnacle” Bill Bryant and Harold “McGoo” McGruther initiated in 2006 to promote their fledgling parts brand among like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts. The first EDR had 47 riders; the eighth edition of the brand’s celebrated adventure saw an

estimated 1,000 men and women descend on Baja California, Mexico, for a weekend of bikes, beer and mayhem on two wheels. Thankfully, not much about the El Diablo Run has changed in thirteen years. Like every event before it, Ruben’s Campo in San Felipe hosted number eight. Ruben’s has 200 yards of pristine beach upon which anyone with a tent can camp for free. If tents lack the Mexican flavor most Diablo Runners come for, myriad “palapa” huts and rustic Air BNB casitas are available. On Sunday, May 5th, roughly one third of the full EDR contingent headed north 130 miles for the brutal return to U.S. civilization. Those who remained met in downtown San Felipe for the El Diablo Run Bike Show sponsored by Choppers magazine. Highlights of the new-and-improved EDR bike show included a live local rock band, free stickers and more tacos and ice cream than an army of gringos could consume. When the sun set on a perfect day of chopping and chilling,

six motorcycle enthusiasts rode away with nearly $5,000 in combined bike show cash and prizes, courtesy of Choppers mag, Biltwell, Lowbrow Customs, SENA and a select group of generous sponsors. For the folks at Biltwell, another long, hard weekend of bikes and bros was in the books. For the men and women who followed Barnacle Bill and members of his dedicated team to Baja, the memories of the best El Diablo Run ever will last a lifetime. ■ 1. NEWS EVENTS Rest in Peace RON “TANK” EWSICHEK 1963 - 2019

W

hen it came to custom bike builders, Ron “Tank” Ewsichek was more than a master metal manipulator and creative genius behind dozens of awe-inspiring paint jobs. He was also a bigger-than-life personality with a heart of gold and a quick wit, often having something funny to say, even if he said very little. As the owner of Tank Tuff Cycle in Aurora, OH, Tank had a true passion for building custom bikes, and was once described by another builder as, “a paint and design guy with ridiculous amounts of fabrication skills.

Tank learned his trade while growing up his father’s body repair shop and went to build a number of FatBook cover bikes. He was a master metal worker and gifted painter.

The longtime friend of Drag Specialties, the builder behind a handful of FatBook cover bikes, as well as the painter of a number of personal bikes, died in early May at the age of 55.

Every one of Tank’s custom bikes was a shining example of the man’s deep talent, including this long, low Chopper for the 2003 FatBook cover.

Tank’s custom builds stretched across multiple bike styles as evident by this Bagger he built for Drag Specialties back in 2012.

Tank’s association with Drag Specialties began back in the mid 1990s when he was asked to build a custom bike for the FatBook. In a Drag Specialties Magazine feature story in 2018 celebrating Drag’s 50th anniversary, Tank recalled that it was a green and white Softail. That project led him to sign on as a Drag Specialties dealer. Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited spokesman (and fellow Ohioan) Rob Buydos was a longtime friend of Tank, and offered up this memory. “When I saw a Tank Tuff bike for the first time, I knew that a true artist had touched every part. The attention to detail was amazing and the paint looked wet,” Buydos said. Then I met the builder and I knew I was correct.” “However, there was way more to Tank than custom Harleys. He was a loyal, honest, and bigger-than-life man with a craftsman’s way of looking at life and bike builds,” Buydos adds. “He will be missed by so many, but will live on in our hearts and in his amazing body of work. Tank, ride in peace.” Tank learned his craft growing up in his father’s body repair shop, and customized his first bike – a Sportster – in 1976. “Of course, everybody starts with a Sportster, don’t they?” he joked in the 2018 interview. In that same interview that highlighted his place in Drag Specialties’ long and storied history, Tank also gave some background on the origins of his nickname, or would it be just his name, as he preferred people simply call him Tank. “My father was the one who first started calling me Tank. He

said I weighed 13 pounds when I was born,” he said, before adding, “I got a brother named Fender, so how’s that?” While well known for his wildly creative and well-executed customs, he was also a gentle soul whose presence touched many peoples’ lives over the years. He was also known for his yearly Christmas cookie contest where friends and customers would bring in plates of cookies for him to try, said longtime friend Patty Mesenbrink. He would then give out fun prizes and pick out the winner, or sometimes winners. Some joked that he was getting tons of Christmas cookies all without baking a thing! “He’d laugh, and say, ‘Don’t ya know it,’” Mesenbrink added. “Tank will most likely be remembered for his unique personality and flavor for humor,” said Drag Specialties’ vendor relations master, Tom Motzko. “He always had something to say that made you laugh or at least smile. And, of course, we’ll always remember his uncanny ability to produce the finest metalwork and extremely creative paint jobs!” “Probably the most well-known and impressive complete custom bike Tank created was the full-bodied purple and cream ‘long-bike’, Tom remembers. “When Tank unloaded this bike from his trailer at Sturgis years ago it just kept coming out of the trailer it was so long.” ■

In late April, the traveling show set-up shop at the clubhouse of the Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys, CA. Attending Drag dealers from across Southern California gathered for some food and refreshments before settling in for an evening of focused training with product specialists from Bel-Ray, Custom Dynamics, Metzeler, Pirelli, and Saddlemen. Prior to the presentations, the dealers had the opportunity to check out a range of custom V-twins, all of them outfitted with the latest hot products from a number of key Drag Specialties vendors. included high-performance Baggers and a couple of hotrod Dynas, one of them done up Club Style. The bikes were rolling examples of what can be built with a little imagination and the pages of the 2019 FatBook and OldBook. Once the evening was underway, product specialist Dylan Jones from Saddlemen kicked things off with detailed information about the company’s Seat Center program and its ranges of luggage. Next up Cody Wolf from Bel-Ray provided the dealers with a focused look at the vendor’s range of V-twin lubricants. Through the rest of the evening, the group of dealers heard from Metzeler’s Tyler Porter who highlighted one of the company’s most vaunted new products, the highperformance Cruisetec tire, which is designed for spirited riding. Allen Schippert from Custom Dynamics talked up the new ProBeam brand and other additions and changes to the company’s range of LED lighted products. Once concluded, Drag Specialties dealers Ted Stollman and Mike Merritt thanked the crowd of dealers for attending the event, knowing most of them had already put in long days at their stores. The Van Nuys stop was just one of 24 cities that the tour visited. The tour is part of Drag Specialties’ effort to bring product training and show discounts directly to dealers and their staff. Dealers come away from the local shows with increased product knowledge, and some extra insight on selling those products. ■

The customized bikes accompanying the tour offers dealers the chance to see exactly what all those great FatBook parts look like installed.

The Dealer Tour offers store personnel more than a night of heavy product education, it also gives them a chance to catch up with their Drag reps and fellow dealers.

FULL THROTTLE SALOON RAFFLE BIKE

S P E C I A L

F E AT U R E

Up for Grabs!

Full Throttle Saloon’s 20th Anniversary Bonus

P

itching a tent or moving into one of the cabins at The Full Throttle Saloon, that self-proclaimed World’s Largest Biker Bar, during the Sturgis Rally this year is going to score some lucky rider a new Harley-Davidson. The bike is a fully customized silver metal flake 2009 Dyna, done up Club Style and just completed at Boosted Brad’s Chop Shop in Ridgely, TN. It looks like Brad Barnes outdid himself with this one, which was put together with plenty of help from Drag Specialties and the FatBook – the bike is a stunner. “Anyone staying with us at The Throttle gets a chance at the bike,” says the Full Throttle Saloon’s Michael Ballard. “Stay with us during the Rally this year and your name goes in the hat. Mid-week, on the Main Stage, we’ll be drawing the winner’s name.” Everyone involved in the build will be there, too. Barnes, of course, and Jesse Jurrens from Legend Suspensions and Tom Motzko from Drag Specialties. Joining them on stage will be someone else--the winner, who has to figure out how to get an extra bike home. Not a bad problem to have.

Customized by Brad Barnes of Boosted Brad’s Chop Shop and Drag Specialties, this Club Style Dyna is up for grabs for one lucky person staying at the Full Throttle Saloon during the Sturgis Rally.

Sturgis 2019 marks the Full Throttle Saloon’s 20th Anniversary, a milestone celebrated with this giveaway custom. “This raffle bike is our first, but it won’t be our last,” Ballard says. “This is something we hope to continue on a yearly basis.” Future Full Throttle giveaway bikes will have a tough act to follow thanks to Barnes’ inspired work. Built in that popular, tough-as-nails Club Style, Barnes, a Drag Specialties dealer himself, relied heavily on the FatBook for the Dyna’s makeover, mixing in a healthy helping of his own-design Death Metal Racing parts. From the Ness fairing up front, to the Legend Suspensions shocks out back the bike’s chock-full of the good stuff. Then there’s that paint job, something else Barnes can take credit for. Pulling out all the stops, Brad completed his silver metal flake base coat with every trick in the book. Flames, scallops, panels, fish-scales, shading, water spots, pinstriping, it’s all here and as confusing as all that sounds it’s been blended together beautifully. Look for more on this bike in a future issue.

»» If you haven’t yet made reservations at the Full Throttle Saloon for Sturgis 2019 get busy. Along with that always-popular Jackyl show, the Billy Lane Sons of Speed Racing, Paul Yaffe’s Baddest Bagger competition, the Hollywood Knockouts, and nightly concerts by Foghat and more there’s something else on The Throttle’s menu this year. This bike, and it could be yours.

Inspiration by Example

ADDING ONE TO THE FATBOOK SHOWBIKE STABLE

S

eeing is believing. That’s been the mission for every FatBook custom on tour with the Drag Specialties show trucks, and the reasoning behind all the bikes built for the Dealer Training Tour. To drive home the transformational impact that easily-installed bolt-ons can have on a Harley-Davidson, catalog pictures, helpful as they can be, only go so far. They don’t compare to actually seeing those parts installed on a bike. Seeing those parts installed fires the imagination like nothing else can. It’s why those FatBook customs have been so popular over the years.

Here’s the latest addition to that storied show-and-tell lineup, a 2018 Street Glide Special. Put together by Joe Houpt and the race-shop team at Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson in Thiensville, WI, the bike continues that inspirational tradition and then some. Once again carefully choosing a well-matched array of FatBook add-ons, Joe and the Suburban team created an eye-popping Harley. More than that, this one is also proof positive that a super-successful custom doesn’t always have to have bright paint and shocking graphics to get noticed. Subdued and classy works just fine, too. Everything Joe and the crew chose for this squeaky-clean Special was a quick bolt-on, something readily available, and picked right out of the FatBook.

Major upgrade, minimal effort. From the wheels to the saddlebags, floorboards, seat and everything else, they’re all bolt-ons from the FatBook.

While there’s little question that Joe and the team really unloaded on this one, as the accompanying Build Sheet will show, there’s not one change or upgrade that stands out on its own, screaming for attention. That’s by design. By now old hands at turning out these bolt-on makeovers, the guys at Suburban Motors know what works, and what works every time is to pick a coherent theme at the beginning and stick with it to the end. PERFORMANCE UPGRADES

Stage I for the Milwaukee-Eights Touring-Bike Upgrade

1.

F

ree-flowing pipes, performance air intakes and the tuning modules to dial it all in, the classic Stage I upgrade for a new HarleyDavidson, is just as sought-after for the Milwaukee-Eight Touring bikes as they have been for every factory-fresh Harley before them. It’s the easily installed, affordable wake-up call that riders want, and Vance & Hines has all of it. There are lots of ways to go with a Stage I but getting everything from one source, the pipes, air filters and the tuning device, assures that everything chosen is going to be compatible with, and work efficiently with, everything else in the package. And with what Vance & Hines has for those M8 Touring models, the upgrade-combination will have that desired compatibility, and will deliver a Vance & Hines level power boost. In addition, it will deliver the Vance & Hines sound, have all that Vance & Hines style and build quality and, finished off with a Fuelpak FP3, be quickly and easily dialed-in for maximum efficiency. With the slip-ons offered here, the Daytona 400s and Eliminator 400s, riders get a lot of choices for their Stage I look and the sound. Designed especially for the 2017 through 2019 M8 Touring bikes both mufflers feature

big, 4-inch bodies, they’re available in either a Black or Chrome finish, they’ll fit fine with OE-standard saddlebags or custom, extended ones and they’re both tipped off with CNC-machined billet end caps, one style for the Daytona 400s and another for the Eliminator 400s. And they both sound great; the Daytona 400s with a hearty big-bike rumble, the Eliminator 400s with a deep, aggressive roar. The matching head pipes available here, the Vance & Hines Power Duals, are not strictly Stage I equipment, but they significantly up the game. Just like the slip-ons they’re available in either Black or Chrome and under their contour-styled heat shields there’s a Vance & Hines crossover Power Chamber for a big performance boost over the OEM head pipes they replace. The Power Duals allow the entire exhaust system to run cooler, too, with up to a 250-degree temperature drop. Naturally, both 12mm and 18mm Oxygen Sensor ports are provided.

2. The next piece of that Vance & Hines Stage power puzzle is a deep breathing air cleaner and the company has some great options like the VO2 Naked and Rogue air intakes. 3. The final step to unleashing more of that Milwaukee-Eight power is the Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3, a complete and powerful fuel management system that easily connects to iPhone or Android smartphones.

VANCE & HINES

1. When upgrading to a Stage 1 setup on a Harley-Davidson Touring bike, a new exhaust system or a set of slip-on from Vance & Hines is the first step toward a healthy boost in power.

2. 3.

VO2 air intakes continue this Vance & Hines M8 conversion and with two styles offered, the Naked and the Rogue with both Chrome and Wrinkle Black finishes available, riders have plenty to choose from here. The VO2s all feature a Vance & Hines design backing plate with breather assemblies and a flow-directing venturi included. The VO2 Nakeds mount their high-flow and washable filter elements behind an OEM cover, the Rogue models utilize a highcapacity/deep-pleated air filter featuring the K&N Xstream filter top developed for racing. It’s especially well suited to the high-flowing, multi-valve Milwaukee-Eight engine. All this comes encased in a sleek, almost-fully-open CNC machined billet cover secured with race-spec ARP bolts. The final piece here, and something just as critical as any other part of the package, is the Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3. To re-map that M8 Touring bike with the fuel delivery and ignition timing it’ll need to match the greatly increased flow of the new intake and exhaust, Fuelpak FP3

connects wirelessly by Bluetooth to iPhone or Android smartphones and makes this important step fast and easy. And Fuelpak FP3’s powerful, too. Using Flash technology it’ll load-in custom maps dyno developed in-house by Vance & Hines and calibrated for a specific combination of performance parts. Virtually every combination of a Vance & Hines intake and exhaust is available. That’s just the start. For advanced users FP3 gives full access to critical ECU tables to custom-adjust idle RPM, rev limits, VE, air/fuel ratio, spark advance and more. There’s also an AutoTune function that, using data collected from the O2 sensors, allows custom tuning as the bike is ridden. Along with all this Fuelpak FP3 has the ability to diagnose trouble codes and view live sensor data in real time. ■

I

t’s often said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If you ask a couple of down-home Southern California racers — Terry Vance and Byron Hines, the two men who founded Vance & Hines Racing — they’ll tell you that a 40-year adventure begins with a quarter-mile. This year marks Vance & Hines’s 40th anniversary as a company offering performance aftermarket products for the road and the track. Welcome to one of the most successful drag racing teams and aftermarket companies in motorcycle history. Actually Terry and Byron’s journey started in 1972 when the two met at the historic Lion’s Drag Strip and the pair became fast friends. Byron tuned the drag bikes that Vance raced to victory over 100 times. With the reputation they developed for building unbeatable drag bikes, many of the competitors they raced against soon sought them out for help building their motors, which led Terry and Byron to set up their own shop in Santa Fe Springs, California. By 1979, they officially formed the company that we all know today as Vance & Hines, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Their success with many legendary motorcycle racers on Vance & Hines’ machines includes countless Pro Stock and Top Fuel drag racing championships. They had similar success in AMA road racing that includes twice winning the famous Daytona 200, not to mention fielding the official Harley-Davidson factory teams in American Flat Track as well as NHRA Pro Stock. But all of that success on the race track is not to overshadow the establishment of the company that became known as Vance & Hines. Its headquarters is still anchored in Santa Fe Springs—where all of its aftermarket performance products are manufactured—in the very same industrial park where Terry and Byron started four decades ago. Indeed, each Vance & Hines product is proudly designed, developed and made in the U.S.A., with all fabrication, from forming, machining and welding to final assembly, plus all R&D and testing, performed in-house.

Terry on the 1,000 horsepower Top Fuel bike, which made him the first motorcycle racer ever to break into the sixes, running a 6.98 ET at Orange County Raceway on August 2, 1984.

Having started out making some of the most iconic performance pipes for the muscle bikes of the ‘80s, it wasn’t until the ‘90s, though, that Vance & Hines entered the Harley market offering exhaust systems, including the famous Straightshots, that, in many ways, changed the way aftermarket pipes were designed and built for America’s premier brand of bike. Following the same formula that has come to define the brand, Terry and Byron lead with innovation, designing V-twin exhausts with features like full-coverage heat shields and CNCmachined billet end caps to give a premium show quality finish to a performance exhaust, that has become the standard for all aftermarket pipes today.

Since 2001, Vance & Hines has run the factory Harley-Davidson drag race team, winning an incredible 9 title championships in Pro Stock motorcycle.

But as a company with its DNA deeply entrenched in racing, Vance & Hines wanted to offer even more for its customers, and in 2005 it delivered. The company introduced its fuel injection tuner, the Fuelpak, and again Vance & Hines raised the bar for other companies to follow, offering an extensive library of custom-tailored calibration maps for its wide range of exhaust applications. Accelerate, now, to 2014 when the Fuelpak evolved into the FP3. The FP3 has really been a game changer for the Harley market as a fullfledged flash tuner that allows customers to tune their bikes through an app on their smartphone. This gives them direct access to the complete

he right handlebar setup can really complete a bike build, both in terms of comfort and looks. The latest handlebars and handlebar risers from THRASHIN are designed to give a bike a sleek style upgrade while improving comfort and performance. Like all THRASHIN parts for Harley-Davidsons, the handlebar components are made in the USA from domestic materials. The THRASHIN risers in black and chrome are a new product, but they have a connection to THRASHIN’s earliest days as a company. The first hard part ever produced by THRASHIN was a top clamp for risers. Those top clamps are still available as a stand-alone product, but the THRASHIN risers feature the full setup, including a newly-styled top clamp and ARP stainless hardware – just add handlebars and go.

Of course, risers need a set of handlebars to match. THRASHIN handlebars are available in three bend options. The High Bend bars have a 5½-inch rise and 4 inches of pull back, the Mid Bend bars have 4 inches of both rise and pull back, and the Low Bend bars have a 2½-inch rise with 3½ inches of pull back. All three are 30 inches in width and come in a finish option of black or chrome. The 1-inch diameter handlebars fit the THRASHIN risers, as well as stock Harley mounts and controls. The handlebars come drilled and slotted for internal wiring, and fly-by-wire key holes allow the bars to work with newer models, too. Knurling ensures maximum clamp grip, and a laser-etched THRASHIN logo makes a subtle statement. Riders who want an even more coordinated look can add a complementary brake reservoir cover. Performance Plus

Cruisetec Sport V-Twin Tires

C

ustomers with high-performance V-twin cruisers and heavy touring models now have an outstanding new choice for tires from Metzeler. It’s the Cruisetec, which the company bills as “performance perfected.” In recent years, the V-twin class has developed performance capabilities previously reserved for bikes of a sportier lineage, and riders are pushing these bikes to higher speeds and lower lean angles than ever before.

Some carcasses are bias belted while some are radials. Most belts are aramid, but some are steel. Most have an H speed rating – approved up to 130 mph, while a few of the rears are V-rated for speeds up to 149 mph. The Cruisetec’s muscular carcass is mated with Metzeler’s legendary sport touring profiles for a performance-minded shape that enhances handling by optimizing the contact area when the bike is leaned in a turn.

The combination of the high silica compound and innovative tread design of Cruisetec tires allows them to heat up quickly and offers fantastic response for outstanding Metzeler’s Cruisetec tires confidence when riding in wet conditions. are designed specifically for performance-minded V-twin riders looking for precise handling, increased braking performance and great cornering grip.

Dual compound rear tires feature a center zone designed for long life and even wear. Softer silica compounds on the shoulders of the rear tire – and entire front tire – promote fast warm-up for increased chemical grip and an enhanced contact patch when pushing the limits during side-to-side transitions. The rear tread pattern features a center strip that boosts mileage and improves stability in straight line riding. In addition, the rear tire tread includes compound bridges for solid tread and even wear, along with diverging grooves for water evacuation and even pressure distribution. The front tire tread includes alternated diverging grooves for water evacuation, braking efficiency and ABS optimization, as well as short converging grooves for mechanical grip.

Consequently, Metzeler’s opening statement about the Cruisetec is surely a bold one, but the company offers plenty of design and engineering considerations and performance features as evidence to support it. For example, a few of the key characteristics of the Cruisetec include; broad fitment, long life, stability, precise handling, increased braking performance, cornering grip, and stability under throttle.

Super Sport, Super Cruise Monotube and Twin-Tube Shocks

U

pgrading a Harley-Davidson suspension for a smooth, controlled and adjustable ride is always a good move and, whether the goal is comfortable cruising or aggressive sport action, Progressive Suspension has the replacement shocks for the job. The question, though, is which way to go? Monotube and twin-tube designs are both available and each has its place.

In a monotube shock absorber, like the Progressive Suspension 465 and 990 Series shocks, the shock’s internal components are all contained within one tube. The piston, valving, oil and gas are all within that one cylinder with an internal floating piston separating the oil chamber from the gas chamber within the shock body.

Progressive Suspension’s 465 Series shock features a complex design that’s suited for performance-minded, aggressive riding.

Cut-away of a monotube design shock absorber.

It’s a complex design, but there’s a lot to be gained from this setup, especially for performanceminded, aggressive riders. For starters the piston valve is bigger and wider in a monotube design. That allows for a wider area of pressure and more-precise damping control. There’s also a larger oil capacity and greater heat dissipation so that precise damping is kept stable and it’s continuous. A monotube design won’t allow air to penetrate the oil or gas so it’s less prone to cavitation, and as temperatures increase the oil is able to release heat with less effort. All this makes a monotube shock absorber more expensive to manufacture, but for serious, sport-minded riders it’s a premium well worth the added cost. Then there are the twin-tube shock absorbers, like the Progressive Suspension 412 Series. With this more-affordable design there are two internal cylinders. One cylinder is set inside the shock body and a second cylinder (the inner cylinder containing the piston-valve that moves up and down) is set inside that. In this design there is no piston-separation between the oil chamber and gas chamber. With a twin-tube design, gas pressures are lower, resulting in soft, gentle damping for a smooth, comfortable ride with reduced stress on the seals. Less expensive to manufacture than a monotube shock, a twin-tube shock absorber can be a great value upgrade. Its’ simple, durable design is especially welcomed by cruiser customers looking for a smooth, controlled and comfortable ride. The 465, 990 and 412 Series shocks used here as examples of monotube and twin-tube shock absorber designs are just some of what Progressive Suspension has for Harley-Davidson models. ■

Custom and Commander Arch Motorcycles Chooses Michelin

A

rch Motorcycles builds bespoke motorcycles that focus on performance as much as custom features. The company was founded in 2011 by Gard Hollinger and Keanu Reeves to produce custom-built motorcycles, and while every Arch bike is different, one thing stays the same: the tires. Michelin is the exclusive tire supplier for Arch Motorcycles, whose bikes feature Michelin Commander II and Power RS tires.

“As we were testing different tires for the Arch KRGT-1 we found the Michelin Commander II was the perfect fit for our motorcycle—for handling and feel in the curves and down the highway—the tire delivered performance. Along with the quality Michelin is renowned for, the Commander II was the perfect fit.” Keanu Reeves, co-founder Arch Motorcycles.

The first custom production bike from Arch Motorcycles was the KRGT-1, followed by the 1S and Method 143. When a customer orders a bike, Arch tailors it to their ergonomic and aesthetic preferences for a truly one-ofa-kind motorcycle. Each finished product is built on a carbon fiber mono-cell chassis and outfitted with billet aluminum bodywork and carbon fiber details. In all, Arch Motorcycles manufactures over 200 proprietary parts at its facility in California. “The ethos of Arch comes from the tradition of form and function. There’s a lot that you can see in the engineering of the motorcycle that serves multiple functions, but there’s also a beauty to it that goes into the whole piece and what we hope to do with Arch,” says Reeves. “I think of it as like a custom suit. If you purchase an Arch and go on this journey with us, you will have your own motorcycle unlike any other in the world.”

Hollinger and Reeves knew their motorcycles needed a performance tire that would give their customers supreme confidence. Not surprisingly, their search led them to the ultimate proving ground, MotoGP. “We met a lot of technicians at MotoGP,” explains Reeves. “We had some motorcycles to show, so when we met Michelin, we could naturally share our passion with the team. We had a true connection with the brand because we went through this process to discover that it was the best tire for our motorcycle with performance, feel and quality. This was the point where the relationship with Michelin began.” Before making any decisions, the team at Arch conducted an in-depth tire test. Hollinger was especially impressed with how the Michelin Commander II felt at highway speeds.

Michelin Commander II

“When we first started testing tires for the Arch KRGT-1, there was a noticeable difference in the stability of our motorcycle when we tested the Michelin Commander II,” says Hollinger. “We tested five to six different tires,

from different manufacturers and different sizes. For our chosen size combination, 240/18 rear tire and 120/19 front tire, there were a limited selection of tires for us to consider. We needed a tire that inspired confidence with our riders. For us, it was interesting that tires could make this much of a difference. You critique a tire on its grip and cornering, but we were noting a marked difference in the straight-line stability with the Michelin Commander II.” Reeves agrees with Hollinger, noting that the Commander II hit the right marks under all riding conditions. He says, “As we were testing different tires for the Arch KRGT-1 we found the Michelin Commander II was the perfect fit for our motorcycle—for handling and feel in the curves and down the highway—the tire delivered performance. Along with the quality Michelin is renowned for, the Commander II was the perfect fit.”

MICHELIN

While every custom bike built by Arch Motorcycles is tailor-made for each individual customer, there is one constant – all of them feature tires from Michelin, the company’s exclusive tire supplier.

The Michelin Commander II is capable of supporting even the largest cruisers, but it has been carefully engineered for handling characteristics more common for a sport tire. The result is a stable, nimble ride and excellent feedback. The computer-optimized tread and compound give the Commander II longevity as well as outstanding allweather performance. For Hollinger, though, partnering with Michelin was about more than simply test results. He says, “What drew us to Michelin was the longevity of the brand that had a central focus of ‘family,’ backed by years of experience and an emphasis on quality over marketing and promotion. What started with just a partnership with tires grew into a larger partnership where we create experiences for our riders. Over time, we’ve learned that what’s unique about both brands is that everything is focused on mobility, passion and precision, with an emphasis on delivering a premium experience through innovation and technical expertise.” Michelin was excited to partner with Arch Motorcycles after seeing the detail that goes into each custom motorcycle. “After personally visiting Arch’s facilities and seeing their production process, I was immediately impressed with their dedication to delivering a unique and high-quality motorcycle for their customers,” says Shane Messner, Director of Two Wheel for Michelin North America. “I also admire their attention to the customer’s wants and needs and how they are met through one-on-one conversations on how the motorcycle can be tailored to each individual rider.” Michelin uses the same rider-centric approach, especially when it comes to blending stability, reliability and performance. “Michelin combines rider feedback on these aspects with proprietary technologies and rigorous internal testing to produce top-tier tires for the market,” explains Messner. ■

Total Transformation

New-Look Squareback Checks all the Boxes

A

54

fter recently introducing the HighTail Fastback, a completely updated version of a longtime fan favorite, Mustang Seats took another cult classic and gave it a total transformation.

Mustang has taken its classic Squareback seat and given it a complete makeover to provide upgraded styling and ergonomic performance for Harley-Davidson Touring models.

The all-new Squareback for Harley-Davidson Touring bikes is based off of a mainstay among Mustang’s Dyna offerings. Its speed-inspired design balances a lean profile with ergonomic bucket-seat styling that keeps even the heaviest of throttle hands planted comfortably in the saddle.

Its hand-sculpted 10-inch driver bucket and signature vertical wall are contoured to relieve tailbone pressure and provide excellent lumbar support. A low profile 6½-inch tail section keeps the streamlined look intact and features a flat, squared-off platform ideal for the occasional piece of luggage or two-up joyrides.

The purpose of a quality aftermarket seat is to change both the look and feel of a motorcycle. Mustang’s Squareback undoubtedly checks both of those boxes, giving customers an option that performs and delivers a truly unique look with off-the-shelf custom flavor. The restyled cover features split-panel tuck-and-roll inlays with added padding for comfort and a classic pleated appearance. The cover also blends smooth and perforated vinyl with brass grommet accents on the outer rear panels for subtle contrasting elements.

At the heart of every Mustang seat is the proprietary controlled-density foam formula that comes fully broken in out of the box, and retains its shape and support after years of use. The patented foam compound offers even weight distribution across its entire width, eliminating pressure points and hot spots. To aid in vibration reduction, the Squareback’s marine-grade fiberglass baseplate incorporates strategically placed rubber bumpers that also protect the paint from direct contact with the pan.

With a reputation built on comfort and quality, you know the designers at Mustang aren’t all about show. Not only does the Squareback alter the appearance of a ride, it also flat-out enhances its performance. Operator placement is similar in terms of reach to the controls and ground compared to the standard factory seat, but the Squareback is designed for more aggressive positioning. Riders get the feeling of sitting further into the motorcycle without actually being lowered, boosting cornering as well as slow-speed maneuvering confidence.

Mustang’s premium expanded vinyl covers offer the appearance of soft leather with the durability and resistance to the elements that exceed OEM standards. The marine-grade fiberglass baseplates, proprietary comfort foam and individually hand-sewn covers are proudly handcrafted and assembled in their historic New England facility. ■

With the previous release and massive popularity of the multi-piece Kage Fighters, the team at LA Choppers understood that some riders are traditionalists and prefer the look of a seamless one-piece bar. This new addition to the LA Choppers family holds true to their company motto of “raising the bar.” These beautiful 1¼-inches thick, double walled bars are built to be abused and were made to turn heads. As we start at the triple trees and work our way up, the risers themselves are tapped and ready for internal wiring at the base for a super clean look. The top bar is inspired by the boys in the dirt and offer that “dirt bike” feel at 301/2-inches wide and 5 inches of pull back. These bars are made to split lanes, crush corners and rip wheelies! These new One Piece Kage Fighter T-Bars are offered in a variety of sizes, at 8 inches, 10 inches, 12 inches, 14 inches and 16 inches of overall rise so there is a height for everyone’s style and needs. And if you want the bars a little closer to you, there is a pullback version available as well! Don’t think that LA Choppers has forgotten about the new Softail line, these bars are notched and ready for FBW (fly-by-wire). So, no matter if it’s a 1986 FXRT or a brand spanking new 2019 FXLR these bars are compatible with a variety of makes and models. LA Choppers offers this bar in two finishes, chrome or gloss black to compliment any build. Your only limitation is the limits of your imagination.

The One Piece Kage Fighter T-Bar is LA Choppers' follow up to its popular multi-piece Kage Fighter handlebars.

LA Choppers builds some amazing American-made handlebars and their pride in that shows in the products they produce. They also understand the concept of affordability with a retail price tag of $279.95$289.95, as well as the most important piece of the puzzle in our industry— availability. LA Choppers is one of the leading manufacturers of handlebars and they understand that you can have an amazing product, but if you fail to deliver that product, you have let the dealers and customers down. Backorder is a foul word on their factory floor. ■

repping a motorcycle often requires very specific tools, and what goes inside the bike should be specific, too. Bel-Ray has oils and lubricants designed exclusively for modern Harley-Davidson models.

The American-made products include full-synthetic Vtwin oil, as well as compartment-specific products like Big Twin transmission oil and V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant. By taking advantage of oils and lubricants made for a very defined purpose and style of bike, the engine is better able to meet its full potential.

reduces or even eliminates gear whine, and helps the rider find neutral easier. The transmission oil features Bel-Ray’s exclusive extremepressure chemistry, which protects gear components from the destructive effects of shock loading. The oil is also designed to retain its properties despite high temperatures and wear. Oxidation protection prevents the temperatures from degrading the oil, and highviscosity-index base oils maintain their film strength over a wide temperature range. The oil also resists viscosity breakdown caused by gear-shearing action.

Bel-Ray has a range of products designed specifically for V-twin engines. The line includes everything from transmission oil to primary chain case lubricant.

The V-Twin Synthetic oil is a premium choice for air-cooled Harley engines. The 10W-50 multi-grade synthetic oil is combined with high-performance additives to provide reliable viscosity, engine component protection and optimal operation. Exclusive Bel-Ray anti-wear chemistry reduces valve train wear and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing. The synthetic base oils and additives result in a superior film strength, and Bel-Ray’s highest viscosity index means improved viscosity protection, even at high temperatures. Exceptional shear stability also reduces viscosity loss. Because the oil reduces friction in the engine, operating temperatures are decreased to help extend the life of the engine. And, on the opposite end of the temperature spectrum, cold starts are easy on the engine. Bel-Ray’s Big Twin transmission oil helps a Harley’s transmission function exceptionally smoothly and quietly. The improved lubrication helps reduce first-gear clunk,

The Bel-Ray V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant is a specially-formulated, high-quality lubricant built specifically for the primary chaincase of all Big Twin models. It offers improved lubrication and it is ideally suited to withstand high pressures. Performance as well as clutch and chain life are improved with the V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant. Exceptional friction additives, less clutch slipping and chatter, plus smoother operation in hot stop-and-go traffic are all benefits of the chaincase oil. Both the transmission oil and the chaincase lubricant are produced in a distinctive red color to help detect any leaks. ■

TIRES

The Battlecruise H50

Tires Built for American V-Twins For the fronts, there’s a large and uniformly shaped contact patch for high cornering power and an easy and precise feel. And, by striking a controlled balance between overall carcass rigidity and shock-absorption flexibility, the Battlecruise H50 tires are able to deliver a smooth, comfortable ride. A tire’s appearance is important to a V-twin rider as well, and the Battlecruise H50 has that desired aggressive look. But more than just looks, the Battlecruise H50 tread designs incorporate everything Bridgestone has learned over its many years of successful racing to optimize performance in both wet and dry conditions. The tread patterns have been proven under actual road conditions, across thousands of miles of testing. The bottom line is that they look good and perform even better. our American V-twin customers demand a lot from their bikes. Choices like chrome, horsepower and style are upgrades that riders make immediately. But what about the tires? Those tires should be the ideal complement to any other upgrade on that motorcycle.

at www.bridgestonemotorcycletires.com.

The tires should provide a smooth, comfortable ride that delivers confidence in all types of conditions. Tires should also have the longevity to last through mile after mile of worry-free use. V-twin riders don’t have to compromise in the demand for any of this, because Bridgestone has built the Battlecruise H50 to meet every one of those demands. First, the Bridgestone Battlecruise H50 was developed to deliver a strong, confidence-inspiring grip on both wet and dry surfaces. It was also engineered to have a light and precise feel, with strong cornering ability. In regards to the ride, the H50 was designed to be incredibly smooth, quiet, and comfortable. These aspects would be enough by themselves, but the H50 also provides the rider with a tire that has great wear life. Every aspect of the Battlecruise H50 including its design, materials and the overall construction has been optimized for an American V-twin. The rear tire, for instance, has a larger crown profile for better adhesion on road surfaces along with a compound specifically developed for extended-mileage and even wear.

Celebratory Pipes

50th Anniversary Performers

RIGHT: Bassani has added another exhaust to its special edition lineup celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary. The new 2-into-1 Road Rage III is built for Milwaukee-Eight Baggers from Harley-Davidson.

BELOW: Each exhaust in Bassani’s 50th anniversary special edition lineup features a special commemorative badge TIG welded onto the end of the exhaust.

Everything that’s made a stainless-steel version Bassani 2-into-1 a rider favorite is here. The style and sweep of the stepped-design head pipes, the flow enhancing Bassanidesigned collector, the megaphone muffler with its reverse-cone end-cap, all of that’s been designed right into this newest anniversary edition version. The addition of a TIG welded 50th anniversary logo plaque denotes its rarity.

F

ifty successful years in this industry is something to celebrate. It’s a milestone reached by only a select few and Bassani Xhaust, that company launched by Darryl Bassani in 1969, is one of them. Not letting this anniversary year go unnoticed, Bassani has released some special-edition pipes to mark the occasion, the first being a newly designed, all stainless steel Road Rage III 2-into-1 for the Milwaukee-Eight Softails. Joining this special anniversary edition collection is yet another new, all stainless Road Rage III, this time with applications for the popular M8 Baggers. It and that Softail version are available now and both are destined to become sought-after collector pieces. Don’t for a minute think this anniversary edition Bagger 2-into-1 is just a wall-hanger or something to be squirreled away for posterity. As cool as it is, and as cool as it looks with its 50th anniversary badging, it’s a genuine Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1. Designed and built to perform, there’s little doubt about its ability to give an M8 Bagger a major boost.

The performance-proven Road Rage III 1¾-inch to 17/8inch stepped-header design has a new look here, too. For this Bagger application, those flow-enhancing pipes have been symmetrically bent to neatly bracket the timingcase cover for an extra-clean, uncluttered appearance. Short, partial heat shields are mounted towards their tops. The entire system, like all stainless-steel Road Rage III systems, is hand TIG welded and standard features include a removable baffle, the ability to remove the end cap and 18mm O2 bungs with 12mm adapters supplied. The unmistakable Bassani 2-into-1 sound is here as well, a classic tone to go with the performance boost. Increases in low- and mid-range torque are coupled with a freeflowing top-end for improved horsepower. ■

Getting Attention

LED Lighting for Better Looks and Visibility The ProBEAM LED Taillight Panels for CVO models are plug-and-play panels with full-contrast brake and turn signals. Each panel features nine LED light pipes that illuminate across the unit as a constant-on running light, while 16 additional LEDs provide a full-contrast brake light and turn signal. The taillight panels are sold in pairs and are available with a red or smoked lens option.

etting noticed can have two very different definitions for motorcyclists. One way of getting noticed is to have a customized bike that stands out in a sea of ordinary stock models. Another way is to get noticed by other traffic on the road with bright, well-positioned lighting. Custom Dynamics has engineered its ProBEAM LED lighting products to help a motorcycle get noticed in both ways. Custom Dynamics launched its first ProBEAM product just last year, and since then the designs and fitments have both grown extensively. Among those products are the ProBEAM LED Taillight Panels for 2014-19 CVO motorcycles, and the ProBEAM Dual Intensity LED TriBar for 2006-19 Street Glide, Road Glide and Road King Special models. Both feature high-quality automotive LEDs and a modern design for a blend of premium visibility and aesthetics.

The ProBEAM Dual Intensity LED TriBar is plug-and-play for 2006-19 Street Glide, Street Glide Special, Road Glide, Road Glide Special and Road King Special models. Just as the name implies, the TriBar has three horizontal rows of bright ProBEAM LEDs that illuminate a constant-on running light and provide a full-intensity brake light. It is a small part that packs a big punch thanks to the advanced optical design, which helps increase side visibility so it shines bright for traffic from multiple directions. The TriBar is also available with a red or smoked lens.

Custom Dynamics makes a range of taillight and rear-bike lighting options in the ProBEAM line, giving bikes several combination possibilities for enhanced rear lighting. The LED TriBar pairs especially well with the Low Profile BAGZ saddlebag lights. Designed to mount easily to OEM hard saddlebags, the lights do not require any drilling and come with a plug-and-play wiring adapter. The design is sleek and low-profile enough to blend in with the lines of the saddlebags, but bright enough to provide a full-intensity brake light. The ProBEAM line also includes rear LED inserts that replace the OEM lights with bright LEDs and have full DOT and SAE compliance. Custom Dynamics includes a lifetime LED warranty with each ProBEAM product. ■

Touring Tires Made in the U.S.

Dunlop’s American Elite tire is a premium tire for the V-twin touring and cruiser segments. It’s ideal for V-twin riders who rack up miles and want a quality, confident ride.

unlop’s American Elite tire is everything the name implies – a premium tire for the V-twin touring and cruiser segment that is completely designed and manufactured in the USA from foreign and domestic materials. It is ideal for V-twin riders who rack up the miles, aren’t afraid to brave the elements, and want a quality, confidence-inspiring tire. Look for them rolling through Sturgis this year. American Elite replacement tires for Harley-Davidson Touring and cruiser models offer exceptional mileage potential thanks to Dunlop’s patented MT Multi-Tread technology. A bike made for long-distance touring deserves a tire that can go the distance, too. The American Elite tires are designed and manufactured in Dunlop’s American facilities. Testing is conducted at the Dunlop Proving Grounds, a world-class motorcycle testing facility in Huntsville, AL. All manufacturing occurs at the company’s plant in Buffalo, NY. In all, there are 28 different American Elite size and style options to choose from, meaning that the tire will fit most Harley-Davidsons as well as select Victory and Indian motorcycles. Customers can choose from three different looks to fit their style. The front and rear American Elite tires are available in black, in a narrow white sidewall stripe or in a wide white sidewall stripe. Each tire is emblazoned with the American Elite name so that people will know where the tire comes from. The tires are H-rated for speeds up to 130 mph or V-rated for speeds up to 149 mph. The most distinctive feature of the American Elite tire is the Dunlop MT Multi-Tread rear-tire technology that offers great handling characteristics and high mileage

capabilities. There are two compounds in the rear tire to offer a great combination of those features. The center of the tread is constructed of a long-wearing compound, while the shoulders are made of a compound designed to offer superior lateral grip for outstanding handling. MT Multi-Tread technology offers a range of benefits over a single-compound tire design, including longer wear, greater lean angle, better stability, more wet grip, more neutral steering characteristics, and greater bump compliance. American Elite tires are also designed to have an even tread wear and quiet operations in all riding conditions, including wet and dry. That even wear helps add to the American Elite’s high-mileage capabilities. ■

Brake Products for V-Twins

L

ong a purveyor of quality motorcycle components, EBC Brakes manufactures products for a range of American-made V-twin motorcycles. They include those from Harley-Davidson, and older models from Buell and Victory. Drag Specialties Magazine checked in with James Hallett, CEO of EBC Brakes, to learn more about some of the products available through Drag Specialties.

“EBC Brakes operates from four manufacturing plants in the UK and U.S. to produce more than 10 million components each year,” Hallett explained from his office at EBC’s worldwide headquarters in Northampton, UK. “This year that componentry includes a number of offerings for American-built motorcycles.”

BRAKE ROTORS Among the first products Hallett highlights are the range of custom stainless-steel rotors. These fully floating brake rotors feature stainless steel componentry, with a heat-treated and tempered outer rotor ring featuring a diamond ground finish and a center hub offering a choice of clean black or chrome luster finish. “A stand-out feature on our floating rotors is EBC’s patented SD or ‘square drive’ button system, which allows the rotor blade to expand and contract freely under heavy braking, effectively eliminating brake vibration and rotor distortion,” Hallett says. The rotors are available in wide or narrow band options – wide band style is suited for use with OEM-style calipers while the narrow band is for use with smaller aftermarket calipers. EBC also produce a range of solid mount (non-floating) rotors which bolt on with no modifications required.

EBC’s range of custom stainless steel rotors are fully floating discs. Their design means the rotor blade can expand and contract under heavy braking, thus eliminating vibration and rotor distortion.

BRAKE PADS EBC makes four grades of brake pads for American-built motorcycles: Soft, Medium, Heavy-Duty and High-End. Typically offering a lifetime of 15,000 to 20,000 miles, the Soft pads are made of Kevlar organics and essential on billet or chromed rotors to prevent galling. The Medium pads are semi-sintered with a high copper content for longer life, and typically provide a lifetime of 20,000 to 30,000 miles, The Heavy Duty pads are fully sintered and made of a Double-H copper carbon alloy compound. They usually have a lifetime of 30,000 to 50,000 miles. The High End pads are made of premium EPFA sintered copper carbon blend to offer the longest lifetime possible while maintaining a like-new feel. They typically provide between 30,000 to 50,000 miles of use. ■

EBC brake pads are available in four different grades, each one a good fitment for specific applications.

.W. Speaker is constantly expanding the available fitments for its Adaptive technology, which includes applications for Road Glides and Victory motorcycles. The progressive Adaptive 2 Series of LED lights is a high-tech solution for better visibility to make nighttime riding easier and more visible. The Adaptive 2 Series headlights eliminate dark corners on sharp turns when using the high beam in addition to the low beam, with exceptional ditch-to-ditch lighting. The view straight down the road is also enhanced, with 1500 feet of illumination allowing a rider to be more confident during a nighttime ride.

Let your Victory Motorcycles customer know that they too can now enjoy J.W. Speakers’ high-tech Adaptive 2 Series LED lights. The option is a plugand-play upgrade for those diamondshaped headlights.

The real high-tech part of the Adaptive 2 Series is the way the LED lights sense when a rider is leaning or turning. On-board sensors and advanced electronics are able to calculate lean angles on a real-time basis, and the lights adjust their angle accordingly. The lights shine directionally in sync with the path of the motorcycle to instantly maximize visibility. Areas of a road that would remain in the darkness with standard, non-adaptive headlights during turning are immediately illuminated by the targeted LED beam. The Adaptive 2 Series lights are DOT-compliant, and the diecast aluminum housings are available in both chrome and black finishes.

Form Meets Function

New Phantom Line Blends Style and Purpose

I

t’s been five years since the latest revival of Indian Motorcycle. During that span, Kuryakyn has amassed a broad lineup of aftermarket accessories with well over 1,000 direct- and multi-fit components in this year’s catalog.

Available for all 2014-later Indian models including Scouts, Phantom grips deliver style and comfort for the long haul.

The all-new Phantom collection is perhaps the most striking addition to date, and confirms that Kuryakyn is remaining loyal to Indian’s rising following. The Phantom collection showcases modern, aggressive designs that keep functionality intact to enhance the look, feel and performance of your customer’s ride. The coordinating line of hand and foot controls was introduced late last year, and they immediately became popular.

More surface area plus forward, middle and rear mounting positions make the Phantom mini boards a versatile upgrade.

While the collection is largely focused around grips, levers and select foot controls specifically for Indian, there are also multi-fit components in the lineup. Phantom mirrors, footpegs and mini boards are all compatible with Kuryakyn’s range of model-specific mirror and splined footpeg adapters, allowing additional fitment on a wide variety of Harley-Davidson models and more.

Phantom driver floorboards and brake pedal pad are direct replacements for stock on Indian cruisers, baggers and touring models.

All Phantom foot control components are constructed from durable aluminum alloy combined with premium EPDM rubber, creating a solid foundation for stability, traction and vibration-dampening comfort. Signature design cues include pass-through styling and sleek angular housings that complement a variety of bikes.

The Phantom shift peg replaces the stock shift peg on all Indian models, as well as the rear brake peg on Scout models and select Victory cruisers.

The Phantom driver floorboards feature a sweptwing design that provides abundant foot room as direct replacements for Indian’s cruiser, bagger and touring models. Phantom mini boards are a scaled-down version of the driver boards that offer a wide range of foot placement and adjustability with forward, middle, and rear mounting locations for the splined adapters.

The forged aluminum Phantom mirrors are available in 7/8-inch and 1-inch bar-end applications, as well as with traditional stem mounts.

Phantom grips, levers and mirrors all make your customer’s ride stand out without sacrificing function. The grips combine ribbed soft rubber inserts and aluminum housings with an ergonomic profile that puts the rider in complete control. Phantom levers complement the look with their sculpted, dished profile that offers a comfortable reach and maximum leverage. ■

New Exhausts for the FTR1200

F

lat track racing has been a staple of two-wheeled competition for decades, but until recently had not seen much mainstream acceptance. The recent revival of the Harley-Davidson vs Indian battle of the brands changed all of that and stoked the fires of popularity, resulting in increased attendance, broadcast coverage, aftermarket sponsorships, and more involvement from OEMs across the board. Key to growth in the space is the return of Indian Motorcycle to the scene in 2017. Partnering with S&S Cycle and creating the purpose built FTR750 race machines, Indian ended the decades old dominance the Harley XR1200 had previously enjoyed.

Nearly identical to the actual race exhaust, the high pipes for the FTR1200 are handwelded stainless steel with ceramic insulated shields, and have an exhaust note that’s rivaled only by the race machines that inspired it.

Indian has gone on to dominate virtually every podium at every American Flat Track race since, winning 17 of the 18 races in the 2018 season, and holding seven slots in the current 2019 series top 10 points standings as of press time. So, what does a big OEM do with that kind of experience? Naturally, they build a production bike and earlier this year they went live with the Indian FTR1200, a true homage to the company’s factory race efforts. S&S CYCLE

Word on the street is that the S&S Cycle’s slip-on exhaust FTR1200 is a game changer for for the FTR1200 is a major the American-made motorcycle upgrade over the chunky market. Is it a standard, a cruiser, OEM setup, providing plenty of style and a healthy a street fighter, a naked bike? performance boost. The jury is still out, but S&S Cycle thinks the bike might have even created its own whole new category. Reasonably priced, well-engineered and enough power on tap to impress flat track champ Jared Mees himself should make for healthy sales of this unique machine. Not surprisingly given its close factory connection (Much of Indian’s factory Wrecking Crew works out of the S&S facility in southwest Wisconsin,) S&S Cycle has already hit the market with parts for the FTR1200, recently launching a slip-on muffler, as well as a full flat track-styled high pipe. The company is a firm believer in the old adage, “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday.” “The FTR is a solid platform and the new exhausts are just the first in a line of S&S performance parts for this bike”, states David Zemla, S&S’s marketing lead. Nearly identical to the actual race exhaust, the high pipes for the FTR1200 are hand-welded brushed stainless steel, and an exhaust note that’s rivaled only by the race machines that inspired it.

Tucked tight against the bike, the Grand National twointo-two is a work of art and each is hand built in the same facility and by the same team that creates exhaust systems for the American Flat Track machines. Borrowing technology from the track, S&S Cycle’s exclusive header outlet tubes allow for easy system removal. Header and muffler heat shields feature additional 6mm ceramic thermal barrier material to protect rider from excessive heat. Also offered in full stainless steel , the new S&S Cycle slip-on exhaust eliminates the bulkiness and weight of the factory setup, and adds a race-inspired Grand National-style endcap, a carbon fiber heat shield and a removable dB reducer that allows the rider to tune the sound of the system. ■

2019 North American NVP Product Expo Madison, WI. August 24-25

Parts Canada and has never looked back. Back then, Parts Canada was the smallest distributor in Canada. “In typical fashion, Fred, along with the U.S. and Canadian teams, turned the tiny distributor into Canada’s largest powersports distributor. We look forward to being a part of the largest powersports distributor expo and to seeing dealers and suppliers from across the continent.”

I

t’s an August tradition that’s coming with a twist for 2019. For years, Madison, Wisconsin has served as the epicenter of the motorcycle aftermarket as the powersports industry converges on the state capital for the chance to see the latest and greatest products coming to market. Now, Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and Parts Canada have teamed up to present the 2019 North American NVP Product Expo. This is a collaboration that allows vendors, dealers and sales reps from across the continent – and from two different countries – to gather for two days of intensive product education, dealer training sessions and invaluable face-to-face socializing.

Of course, as much as the NVP Expo is about doing business, it’s also about retailers, vendors and reps getting the chance to meet face-to-face to talk shop, catch up, bench race and simply have a great time. That’s where the popular Meet & Greet/Bike Show comes in. Look forward to seeing some prized machines from dealers and industry insiders parked atop the Monona Terrace Rooftop.

the show and on all the planned events. Here’s what dealers can expect when Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and Parts Canada take over the Monona Terrace in downtown Madison.

“I’m very excited to have our Canadian team join us for our first North American NVP,” said Mike Collins, CEO of LeMans Corporation. “It’s another step forward in our quest to service all our dealers the very best we can. What an opportunity to share ideas and experience and to learn from one another.”

SHOW HOURS/EVENT SCHEDULES

The North American NVP runs two full days and features opportunities to connect with the industry’s leading brands on the expo floor, through dealer training sessions, and socially at the Meet & Greet/Bike Show. Dealers attending Sunday’s expo will have the opportunity to take advantage of exclusive show discounts and incentives.

Saturday, August 24 – 10 a.m.

“Parts Canada, its staff and I are very proud to be a part of the LeMans global family. JJ’S CYCLE A DREAM COME TRUE

C

ontrary to what some people might say, the Great American Dream is alive and thriving – if you’re willing to work hard for it. And Joe Teson, better known as Buzzy to his friends, family, associates and customers, has worked hard to live the Great American Dream ever since he was an upstart high school student itching to leave his mark in the motorcycle industry.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2019

That was back in the late 1960s, and today Buzzy, who owns JJ’s Cycle in Watervliet, NY, will tell you that it’s been a rewarding and memorable ride ever since. All stories have a beginning, and Buzzy’s saga originated when he began performing minor maintenance and repair work to his friends’ motorcycles. About that same time he met Brownie Betar, a local icon from upstate New York known for his expertise

Joe “Buzzy” Teson has been living his dream ever since he went into business for himself after graduating from high school. To this day his shop is neat and orderly.

JJ’s Cycle is your classic neighborhood bike shop. Swap out those millennial Hogs in front for authentic 1950s models and you’d swear you were back in the Ike Era.

business where he honed his skills in that trade, too, his shift ending at midnight. At the same time, he simultaneously maintained a small motorcycle repair business in the 12-foot x 20-foot shop space his father let him use. V-Twin Racing Enterprises was open for business! For 20-some years, and through hard work and savvy marketing, his business expanded until that small shop space his father had reserved for him was blocking progress. Finally, in 1998, he made an executive decision: “I bought my own shop,” Buzzy said, a place he occupied until 2004. With that new shop came a new company name – JJ’s Cycle. See, a few years before that 1998 expansion, Buzzy married his wife Jeanne. The new business name derives from their first names, Joe and Jeanne.

tuning and repairing Indian motorcycles. Buzzy quickly realized that, so he paid close attention to Brownie’s work habits and ethics. “He taught me how to work on motorcycles,” Buzzy stoically says today. “I learned a lot from him.” About that same time Buzzy gained employment as a repairman at a jukebox company. That was his day job though; every afternoon when he clocked out, Buzzy promptly made tracks to his father’s auto body repair

Shortly after expanding the business Buzzy made another important commitment, this time with Drag Specialties serving as his primary parts supplier. Today Buzzy considers that union, along with his marriage to Jeanne, among his wisest decisions he ever made. “Drag always has the parts in stock and I can usually get what I need the same day,” he says. It helps, too, that the nearest Drag Specialties warehouse is a mere 30 minutes away! A final move, this time to the current place of business, and connecting with Drag Specialties, enabled JJ’s Cycle to boom, its specialty being big American V-twin motorcycles. At least it was that way until a nearby metric bike shop closed its doors, leaving a vacuum of sorts. Nature abhors a vacuum, so Buzzy did the natural thing, filling the gap to expand and accommodate metric bike owners looking for quick and efficient service.

JJ's Cycle is a full-service store, offering everything from oil changes and winter storage, to performance work and New York state safety inspection services.

DEALERSHIP PROFILE

That opened yet another door for JJ’s Cycle; at one end of the building you’ll now find JJ’s Cycle Lube, which actually serves as a ride-thru for bike owners needing to renew their annual New York State safety inspection certification. “No appointment necessary, either,” touts Buzzy, and the $10 service charge covers the certification sticker plus a quick mechanical inspection of each bike passing through.

86

JJ’s Cycle also offers long-term bike storage, a feature especially popular among locals during upstate New York’s brutal winter months. Three hundred bucks covers six months hibernation in a heated and secured building. But wait, there’s more! The one-time fee includes updating the bike’s annual state inspection sticker, routine trickle charge to maintain the bike’s battery, an oil and filter change, fuel additive treatment, and a wash and wax before the customer’s trusty steed is let out of the barn for the riding season.

JJ’s Cycle does it all, from parts and apparel to service and maintenance to constructing custom bikes that sit proudly on the clean showroom floor.

JJ’s Cycle also hosts summertime bike nights every second Tuesday from May through September, and to counter the cold grip of winter the shop promotes its annual swap meet the third weekend in February. It’s a wintertime happening, with more than 70 vendors selling their wares. And, for the first time ever, Buzzy is promoting the Motorcycle Jamboree at the nearby river view park on July 20, 2019. He also keeps customer excitement high all year long by digging deep into the FatBook and OldBook for ideas to promote monthly sales specials. A loyal and dedicated crew, the support of the world’s largest motorcycle parts distributor, a keen eye on marketing, plus a happy marriage have helped turn Buzzy’s dream into reality. Yeah, the Great American Dream is real, and it can be found near the banks of the Hudson River in upstate New York. That’s where you’ll find JJ’s Cycle. ■

Traditional Treads

Handcrafted Boots from Los Angeles

Like all of Broken Homme’s boots, the Davis features hefty 5-ounce full-grain leather uppers, Goodyear welt construction and slip/oilresistant Vibram outsoles.

While they started out as a workwear and lifestyle boot brand, Broken Homme’s lineup quickly caught the eye of V-twin riders looking for a rugged, comfortable and stylish no-nonsense boot – the Jaime model is one such boot.

B

roken Homme boots don’t look like motorcycle boots. Or rather, they look like the styles that riders wore back before motorcycle-specific boots were widely available. That classic styling is intentional, and it goes hand-in-hand with the company’s commitment to traditional production processes.

88

for maximum comfort, the Goodyear welt construction ensures a watertight seal and the boots can easily be re-soled for even longer life.

Jim Leatherman and Josh Johnson founded Broken Homme in Los Angeles in 2011, starting out as a lifestyle and workwear boot brand. The boots began to catch the attention of V-twin riders, which led to Drag Specialties stocking three of Broken Homme’s most popular designs for motorcyclists.

Leatherman and Johnson did a lot of searching in the early days of Broken Homme, looking for the right source materials, partner companies and even manufacturing facilities. In the end, they opted for an all-American approach. The materials are all sourced in the U.S., and the boots are handmade at the Broken Homme factory in Los Angeles. Even the factory calls to mind traditional bootmaking techniques – it was founded more than 50 years ago as a factory for making longshoreman boots.

The James, Jaime and Davis boots all have hefty 5-ounce full-grain leather uppers, Goodyear welt construction and slip/oil-resistant Vibram outsoles. The designs and outsoles vary to accommodate different tastes as well as different riding styles. All three come in a black or brown finish, and the James also has an oxblood option.

“We believe in working with the best raw materials for the job, and we constantly put our materials to the test for both durability and comfort,” says Leatherman. “Working with our tannery, trim and outsole partners that carry this same dedication to quality is an important part of the Broken Homme process.”

A lot of the selling points are things that aren’t immediately visible. Leatherman says, “Most of the efforts in our process are confined to the places that are not typically seen with a product at first glance. This includes lightweight cork midsoles and latex comfort padding along with fully-lined upper construction. All components have been built for the long haul, and we pride ourselves in selecting the best.”

The handcrafted approach can be a challenge in a world of mass-produced goods, but Leatherman says it is worth it not just for the quality control, but also for the preservation of an art form. “Although it isn’t always easy, we make the commitment to keeping the boot-making trade alive in the USA, and strive to continue to pass our knowledge along to the next generation,” he says. ■

When Leatherman refers to the long haul, he means it. The cork footbeds will mold to the wearer’s foot over time

Spring Conversion and Extra Plate Kits

CLUTCH PARTS

Clutch Upgrades

When it’s time to upgrade the clutch on a 1998 through 2017 HarleyDavidson Big Twin, Barnett offers two styles of its Big Twin spring conversion kit, and its Extra Plate clutch kit.

W

hether it’s wear and slippage or the need for something to harness increased horsepower, when it’s time for a Harley-Davidson clutch overhaul it only makes sense to step up from an ordinary OE replacement to Barnett.

The second choice here is Barnett’s Low Profile Lock-Up pressure plate spring Conversion kit. These are designed to fit under most stock or aftermarket primary and derby covers, with the exception being 2013 through 2019 narrow-primary models with the assist-and-slip clutch.

When the bike in question is a 1998 through 2017 Big Twin, Barnett has some attractive, affordable options, including two styles of its Big Twin spring conversion kit, and its Extra Plate clutch kit. Both are easily-installed, budget-friendly upgrades.

The billet-aluminum pressure plate comes with three different sets of coil springs – light, medium and heavy – to fine-tune the lever feel and clamping pressure. The Lock-Up model also features stainless steel weighted arms that progressively increase pressure to the clutch as rpms increase. It’s a design that greatly enhances the clamping capacity of a stock clutch, while keeping lever effort to a minimum. Applicable for everything from stock to big-inch motors, there are cable- and hydraulic-actuation models.

Barnett’s standard model spring conversion kit is a popular choice, and comes with a precision machined billet aluminum pressure plate and two full sets of heavy-duty coil springs. A direct replacement for the stock diaphragm spring/pressure plate assembly, mixing and matching those two different-tension spring sets allows for three spring-pressure options. By using all the springs of one set, all the springs in the other set or mixing the combination half-and-half, the clutch pressure can be custom tuned. This is an upgrade ideally suited for everything from stock to high-performance applications. Installation is bolt-in with no modifications required and there are cableand hydraulic-actuation models. The result is smoother shifting and a stronger, more progressive and linear clutch engagement.

Coupling a Barnett Extra Plate clutch kit with either of those coil spring conversions is a natural. Featuring carbon or Kevlar segmented friction plates, and tempered steel drive plates, the Big Twin kits increase clutch surface area 18 percent. Additionally, the segmented design of Barnett’s friction plates increases oil flow throughout the clutch for smoother, more consistent performance and extended life. Just like those spring conversion kits, the Extra Plate clutch kits are drop-in replacements for OE. ■

Performance on Display New Bagger Show at Sturgis

MJK Performance’s Radial Mount Mono Block Brake Caliper offers improved braking and plenty of style.

Like most of its parts, the cush drive chain conversion from MJK Performance not only looks like a piece of art, it’s also built to perform.

M

JK Performance has always been dedicated to performance Baggers, and they will emphasize that at Sturgis this year during the inaugural Performance Bagger Show sponsored by MJK Performance. The show’s attendees will also get an up-close look at a brand-new MJK Performance custom Bagger, featuring the company’s best-selling parts as well as some one-off pieces. As such an integral part of the growing performance Bagger scene, MJK Performance jumped at the opportunity to sponsor a show for that segment at Sturgis. MJK Performance wanted to create a show with class categories that encompass all types of riders and builders, from entry-level builders to the pros. Attendees at Sturgis can head to Black Hills Harley-Davidson on Monday, August 5 for the show. The MJK Performance top sellers that will grace the new Bagger are also available through Drag Specialties. The parts are more than just shiny bolt-ons; they enhance the crucial functions of Baggers to put them firmly in the performance category. MJK Performance braking options include rotors, monoblock brake calipers and brake caliper adapters. The floating front brake rotors are made of stainless steel with a lightweight aluminum carrier. Sold in pairs, the left/right side rotation is laser-etched. Carrier designs include Star and Enforcer and come in 11.8-inch or 13-inch sizes. The Radial Mount Mono Block Brake Caliper includes a four-piston caliper, brake pads, 10mm banjo bolts and bleeder screws. Customers get to choose from a

black, red or gold anodized finish. Caliper adapters are available separately, too. Another option from MJK Performance that modifies the front of a Bagger is a complete handlebar, gauge pod and riser kit. The triple-clamp is machined for a better riser location, the gauge pod is tilt-adjusted and everything comes machined for internal wiring. The pod works with OEM gauges. The risers, pod and upper clamp are all machined from 6061-T6 aluminum for strength and light weight. MJK Performance makes a cush drive chain conversion that pairs with the stock gearing. The conversion kit includes a cush hub, a 51-tooth rear sprocket, two bearings and a spacer. The hub is machined from 6061 aluminum, and the rear sprocket is made of steel and electro-zinc oxide gold. The Low Profile Rear Axle Adjuster comes in a kit that includes the rear axle and axle adjusters. The stainless-steel axle is easy to adjust thanks to laser-etched settings on the adjusters. Like the brake calipers, the adjusters also come in black, red or gold. The Max Lean floorboards have a lightweight lattice design in a black anodized finish. The four-way adjustability includes tilt and slide options. The mounted boards sit two inches further back than stock, giving it a mid-control feel, and they are also higher for more clearance. ■

Magnum Shielding Handlebar Kits lines and all the required hardware. One part number gets it all and it’s all been designed and packaged to fit and work together. Two handlebar styles are available, the smooth-bend Caliber and the pointy-end Viking for that aggressive look so popular now. Both are offered in bagger configurations to clear batwing fairings and as classic ape-hangers. And with height choices ranging from 10- to 16-inches and finish options of Chrome or Black Powder Coat there’s a custom handlebar to suit any build style. The big, 1 ¼-inch bars are CNC mandrel-bent for accuracy and TIG welded for strength. The bars are knurled in the mounting area, feature machined control mounts plus burr-free holes and slots for internal wiring and electronic throttle control.

Magnum Shielding’s Caliber handlebar kit includes everything necessary for a handlebar upgrade. The bars feature a smooth, contoured bend that looks classic and stylish.

Swapping out stock bars to taller handlebars can sometimes be a challenge. Not so with Magnum Shielding’s Viking handlebar kit. A patented internal design features smooth bends that make it easy to pull through a complete wiring harness.

S

wapping handlebars on a Harley-Davidson isn’t always as easy as it sounds. That new, custom look can open up a can of worms, especially when the handlebars are sourced one place and the extendedlength cables, lines and wiring come from somewhere else. Getting everything to fit can be problematic. Then comes the actual installation. Running extra-length wires through the new handlebar can be a nightmare Magnum Shielding’s Caliber and Viking Handlebar Kits eliminate all those headaches. With the Magnum Kit everything’s included, the new extra-height handlebars along with all the needed throttle and idle cables, wiring extensions, the clutch cable or hydraulic clutch line, brake

And speaking about that wiring, Magnum’s made that process as easy and trouble-free as possible. Paying as much attention to the internal design of these handlebars as to what has been lavished on their external good looks there’s a patented internal design that allows plenty of room and creates smooth internal bends, even inside the pointy-ends of the Viking models. The design guarantees an easy pull of the complete wiring harness. Further simplifying things, Magnum preloads the bars with an E-Z pull-through woven plastic sleeve; insert the wiring harness into the exposed sleeving end and pull it through, simple as that.

Magnum Shielding’s Handlebar Kits couple all of this with the correctly-sized throttle and idle cables or throttle-by-wire extensions, the proper-length clutch cable or hydraulic clutch line, all the required extended-length brake lines and pre-terminated switch and turn-signal wiring extensions where applicable. For all this there are matching braid choices of Black Pearl or Sterling Chromite for a complete installation package that’s going to fit, going to work correctly, going to look great and, as important as anything else, ensure a custom handlebar swap made as easy as possible. ■

KB Performance Motorcycle Pistons Now for Milwaukee-Eight Engines

Let your customers on Milwaukee-Eight powered Harley-Davidsons know that KB Pistons now has M8 fitments for its line of forged pistons.

K

B Performance Motorcycle Pistons recently expanded its lineup of forged pistons with the latest addition to support Milwaukee-Eight engines. The line of KB forged pistons includes applications for Panhead, Shovelhead, Sportster, Evolution, Twin Cam – and now – owners of Milwaukee-Eight engines can get in on the action. KB Performance Motorcycle Pistons are produced by United Engine and Machine Company (UEM), a leading producer of cast and forged pistons. Soon after its foundation in 1922, UEM became an established supplier of aftermarket pistons on the West Coast. Around the turn to the 21st century, UEM entered the Vtwin market by appealing to a wide swath of customers with its line of cast KB Performance Motorcycle Pistons to fit a broad range of Harley engines beginning with the Panhead and, eventually, expanding to support Twin Cams. These cast hypereutectic pistons exhibit minimal thermal expansion, enabling engine designers to specify very tight tolerances. Then, in 2008, the company targeted performanceminded V-twin motorcycle builders with its line of forged pistons, which are even better suited for highperformance or high-compression applications than cast hypereutectic pistons. Now, the company is expanding its line of pistons, which include options for maintaining stock compression or increasing performance with a higher compression ratio,

92

to include applications for the Milwaukee-Eight engine. Demonstrate your expert product knowledge by letting Milwaukee-Eight owners weighing options for achieving their performance goals know about the value of KB pistons. Forged KB Performance Motorcycle Pistons (cast ones, too) include the new M42 treatment, an improved anti-friction skirt coating containing a blend of Moly, PTFE and graphite bonded with a high-strength resin to increase service life. To maintain exacting tolerances, all KB forged pistons are manufactured in-house from 4032 low-expansion alloy for a tight piston-to-wall clearance and feature offset wrist pins, which result in quiet engine operation. Performance features of KB forged pistons include fully machined, generously sized valve pockets, anti-detonation grooves on the top land and second land accumulator groove to help maintain a tighter seal. Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight engine owners who want top performance should opt for the forged Super Duty Series, which include a hard-anodized top ring groove and crown along with Line2Line™ abradable skirt coating. Thicker than a standard skirt coating, this one is engineered to hone in during break in for an optimal oil wedge. Compared to an uncoated forged piston, this achieves substantially less piston rock for the best possible ring seal, improved oil control and greatly reduced mechanical operating noise. ■

Big Sucker, Inverted and the Method

AIR CLEANER KITS

Breathe Free

The Method air cleaner features a clear, polycarbonate window that offers an unobstructed view straight into the throttle bottle.

Big Sucker Stage 1

R

eplacing an OEM air filter with something custom is one of the first things many Harley-Davidson riders do. When that bike is a late-model Milwaukee-Eight, though, there’s an added issue. With the common blow-by issue of those bikes, things can get messy. The free-flowing, customstyled Ness Enterprises kits, the Big Sucker Stage I, the Inverted Series and the clear-topped Method all address that M8 oiling problem head on. Along with the free-flowing performance and dozens of custom styles offered for all three filter kits, there’s a new and patented breather system that’s incorporated into all the backing plates. It eliminates those oiling issues associated with M8 engines by directing any excess breather oil back into the engine. A significant step up from an ordinary breather system, the Ness M8 breather is O-ringed at the heads, passes through the backing plate and exits inside the mouth of the throttle body through proprietary breather tubes. To ensure that no oil saturates the filter and restricts airflow,

the Ness system also integrates a patent-pending oil reservoir that can be serviced along with the filter element. Clean on the inside, it’s clean on the outside, too, eliminating the need for any external hoses or hardware. All this comes with custom looks and deep-breathing performance. The Big Sucker, Inverted, and Method all feature open, 360-degree exposure of their pleated filter elements, and the forged billet-aluminum backing plates have a radiused air inlet for smooth airflow. There are three completely different looks to choose from, each available in chrome, black and brass, with a full range of cover and framing designs. Consider the Big Sucker Stage I. The full-coverage tops for these exposed element systems are offered in Smooth, Slot Track, Beveled, 10-Gauge, Scalloped, Knuckle, Brushed Stainless, Carbon and Brass styles, nine distinctly different looks with the additional choice of a chrome or black finish. The Inverted Series with its open, CNC machined top acting as a velocity stack, serves up an array of style choices. There are Slot Tracks, Deep Cuts, Beveled, 10-Gauge, Drift and 15-Spokes here, with many of them available in a chrome or black finish. Then there’s the Method kits. Here the forged billetaluminum filter ring in chrome or black features a clear, polycarbonate window for an unobstructed view straight into the throttle body and the internal working of airintake system. That window, coated with proprietary films that prevent oil adhesion or yellowing from UV exposure, stays crystal clear. ■

HANDLEBAR KITS

Fat Baggers EZ Install Handlebar Two-Piece, Time-Saving Solution

Available in Round Top or Pointed Top versions in chrome and gloss black powdercoat finishes, these handlebars feature a revolutionary, interlocking bolttogether two-piece design that simplifies installation. The two-piece EZ Install handlebar kits include everything to install the handlebars in half the time of one-piece handlebars.

Fat Bagger Inc.’s 1¼-inch EZ Install Handlebar Kits are available in Round Top or Pointed Top versions and include everything necessary for a quick-and-easy bar swap.

How is that possible? With this design, customers do not need to replace the clutch and brake lines, because these kits include parts to extend the ones they already have. In consideration for maintaining an uncluttered appearance, the extension connections are hidden neatly inside the fairing, out of sight. (Black bars include black braided lines/vinyl cable extensions; chrome bars include braided stainless lines/cable extensions.) Plus, the bars are easy to wire in only minutes. Pointed Top Handlebars feature a billet machined top with a large internal machined radius that allows for easy wire pulling. Bars with squared lower bends also have additional slots to ease wire routing.

F

at Baggers Inc.’s position as an industry leader among the custom bagger crowd dates back to 2004, when the company entered the market by offering a single Fat Tire Kit. Since then, Fat Baggers has greatly expanded its product line and grown into a leading supplier to the American V-twin aftermarket. In particular, the company’s 1¼-inch EZ Install Handlebar Kits have recently resonated with big-bike customizers who are re-working their motorcycle’s cockpit. Fat Baggers products feature high-quality design, materials and manufacturing that have left an indelible impression on the company’s niche market, and these kits certainly reinforce that reputation.

These simplified installation and wiring procedures equate to real savings of both time and money for customers, whether they are tackling the installation themselves or having the dealer do it. ■

»» Ask your Drag Specialties rep about Fat Baggers

1¼-inch EZ Install Handlebar Kits today, or go to https://fatbaggers.com for more information.

Thanks to a large internal machined radius, pulling wires through the handlebars is a snap.

They showcase the innovative approach and elegant solutions that keep Fat Baggers at the front of the custom bike scene. The new, unique two-piece design takes up half the shelf space of a one-piece handlebar (beneficial when calculating storage and shipping costs), and they are easy to install and wire. Plus, these handlebars enable customers to keep the pedigree of their red-blooded American V-twins pure because they are proudly made in the U.S.A. In terms of materials and applications, these handlebars are CNC mandrel-bent from 1¼-inch x .120-inch tube, which is knurled and notched for throttle-by-wire applications. Kits are available to fit both non-ABS and ABS models.

Venting The Milwaukee-Eight Helping Out the Newest Harley-Davidsons

Feuling has two new vented dipstick assemblies that are designed specifically to help with the wet-sumping condition on Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight models.

W

hen it comes to alleviating the wet-sumping condition of a HarleyDavidson Milwaukee-Eight every little bit counts. Vented dipstick assemblies from Feuling Parts are the newest tools in the arsenal.

Feuling’s oil-pump/cam-plate replacements address that oiling problem head-on. The vented dipsticks pitch in by removing unwanted pressure buildup through a built-in breather system with its own filter element and umbrella valve. Two versions are offered, one for the Touring model engines, one for the M8 Softails and both are available in Polished or in Fade-Resistant Black and come supplied with a choice of venting/filtering systems. For the cleanest, simplest look there is a vent/filter system that screws right into the dipstick’s cap. The second vent/filter system, also supplied in the kit, is particularly well-suited to big-bore engines and M8 motors with significant blowby. It vents to a remote crankcase-style filter element via a hose with a quick-disconnect coupling at the dipstick cap. There’s also a unique, easily-read marking system to assure that the correct oil level is maintained. Oil level, Feuling has found, is critical with an M8. Feuling’s extensive testing has shown that when an M8’s hot oil level is kept between the 90 percent and 99 percent full level, the lubrication system functions best. To help maintain those levels the Vented Dipsticks have two dimpled-scales – FHS to read hot oil level while on the kickstand, and FHU to check hot-oil level while the bike is in an upright position. The most accurate kickstand readings, Feuling advises, come after a warm engine has been shut down while the bike is still in an upright position, then leaned onto its side stand. ■

he benefits of DP Brakes are well known. With DP’s sintered pads, braking power gets a big improvement. The pad’s ceramic heat barriers keep brake-fade at bay, there’s never any squeal, and there’s no brake dust so wheels and tires stay clean. The brake pads are always competitively priced, and can last up to three times longer than OE.

BRAKES

Brake Pad Trio

DP Brakes has three options when it comes time for your Harley-Davidsonriding customers are ready to upgrade their brake pads.

Picking DP is an easy choice. The only question for your Harley-Davidson riding customers is which DP pad is the right pick – the DP Standards, the sport-oriented SDPs or the new Drag Specialties Premiums by DP Brakes? Fortunately, there’s no wrong choice.

The most popular pick will be the DP Standards, and name aside there’s nothing standard about them. These custom-formulated sintered metallic pads offer a significant improvement to a Harley’s braking system. The performance is strong, clean, quiet, fade-free and there’s that significantly extended service life. DP brake pads are easy on the rotors, too.

Aggressive, sport-oriented riders might want a look at the SDP pads or those Drag Specialties Premiums by DP. Both feature an HH+ friction-material blend to go with everything else a DP brake pad offers. The SDPs and Drag Specialties Premiums will serve up a stronger initial bite and follow that up with consistent, powerful, controllable performance, all with low lever effort. ■

ver more than 100 years of motorcycle innovation, Harley-Davidson has shaped the culture and standards of the V-twin market in the United States.

For many of those years, Wiseco has long offered premium, forged pistons for many of Harley’s iconic V-twin engine platforms through products such as the Black Edition line of pistons. Now, Wiseco unveils a new feature-rich piston that comes at a more affordable price. Introducing the new line of Tracker Series pistons. Wiseco Tracker Series pistons are forged from the same quality alloys your customers would expect from Wiseco, and they boast performance features

Wiseco keeps cost down by using proprietary nearnet forgings. With this method, features like valve pockets and oil drain backs are actually forged into the part instead of requiring additional machining. This is something that can be controlled because all Wiseco pistons are forged in-house in the U.S. ArmorGlide skirt coating reduces friction and operating noise for the life of the piston, and high-tension, 3mm oil ring sets are utilized for improved oil consumption control. Whether your customer is working on an EVO, Twin Cam, or Sportster, there are various Tracker Series options available. Different combinations of overbore sizes and high compression designs are readily available on the shelf, supporting popular mods such as 1200cc Sportsters and 103ci Twin Cams. all riders like to show off their skills, too. That was the thinking behind the KickFlip Daddy Long Legs from LePera Motorcycle Seats. The seat combines shred-worthy styling with an extra two inches of legroom.

The KickFlip Daddy Long Legs comes in four different finishes, including Diamond and Pleated Stitch. All of them offer taller riders more room to stretch.

The KickFlip and its longer counterpart, the new KickFlip Daddy Long Legs, fit 2008 to 2019 Baggers, but they are designed to be so much more than just a solo touring seat. The maximized back support and ample 12½-inch wide seating area offer plenty of comfort, but they also provide a platform for more adventurous riders. In other words, the KickFlip is ideal for both long-haul rides and aggressive street riding. The KickFlip Daddy Long Legs moves the rider 2 inches further back than the standard KickFlip. Not only does

that give riders with long legs a bit more room to stretch, but it also enables tall riders to have a more comfortable reach to the handlebars.

Both versions of the KickFlip seat are available in four different finishes. The Basket Weave, Diamond and Pleated Stitch are more traditional finishes, while the Gripp Tape finish is LePera’s answer for riders who need an extra level of traction. While the KickFlip is a forward-thinking design, it is still a traditional LePera seat at its core. The handcrafted steel base is powder-coated and carpeted to provide a precise fit that doesn’t cause any damage to the frame or fender. LePera’s Marathon Foam provides a premium blend of stability and comfort. ■

Brake Lines That Make the Grade

I

n the February issue of Drag Specialties Magazine, Magnum Shielding’s article “Brake Line Compliance 101, a Guide to DOT Requirements” highlighted how its brake line assemblies require 100 percent compliance with FMVSS-106 safety standards.

Brake line assemblies subjected to the Whip Test are put under an incredible amount of stress and are flexed continuously at 800 rpm for a minimum of 35 grueling hours.

These standards require grueling tests that exceed what riders will see in the real world, but this intentional overcompensation protects the rider from variables encountered in usage, installations and manufacturing. As brake line experts, Magnum conducts all testing in-house, a fact that should allow you to confidently sell Magnum’s products knowing they will hold up to the demanding and harsh conditions to which they’re subjected. One of these torture tests is the Whip Test, and it is one of the most difficult of all the tests to pass due to the enormous stresses that it puts on the lines. Braided brake lines experience serious metal fatigue when flexed continuously at 800 rpm for a minimum of 35 punishing hours. When running, the brake hose looks like an airplane prop, a mere blur. The brake line assembly is mounted with a

specific amount of slack and then locked down with no ability to spin which would otherwise reduce the stresses on the assembly. During the test, the brake hose is pressurized with water with any pressure drop indicating failure. Magnum strives to deliver a high-end, high-quality product that stands up to real-world usage, and the company is committed to providing dealers with products they have come to know and trust. ■

The popular AS-3000 is a premium two-piece rainsuit designed to keep riders comfortable on the road, even in a downpour. The lined jacket is cut to fit over a rider’s gear, such as leathers or a jacket. Three waterproof pockets keep small things nice and dry, too. The chest pocket can actually double as a forward-facing vent when it isn’t being used for storage. There is also an adjustable full-length zippered

ventilation system in the back to allow air to keep flowing while the rain stays out. The front zipper has a self-fastening storm flap for another layer of protection from the wet, and the soft corduroy collar holds a concealed hood that can be unfurled when it is needed. Stretch belt adjusters and self-fastening adjustable cuffs help a rider get a snug fit, and reflective piping helps increase visibility in any kind of weather. The AS-3000 pants have oversized zipper gussets so they can go on easily, even when wearing boots. Foot stirrups keep the cuffs down, while adjustable elasticized suspenders keep the waist up. Protective heat panels on the lower leg and a reinforced seat panel add durability, while more reflective piping adds visibility. The brand’s distinctive Milwaukee-Eight Vanquish rocker covers and cam covers are on the Fat Bob Softail featured on the cover of the 2019 FatBook. The Vanquish series is a popular one among Ken’s Factory customers, so it is no surprise that the line has extended to include a rocker cover and cam cover for M-8 bikes. The Vanquish design features distinctive parallel channels that are precision machined. The look is bold enough to

stand on its own, but versatile enough that it can be mixed-and-matched with other designs from Ken’s Factory. The covers are all machined of a high-quality 6061 billet aluminum. Finish options include polished and the popular Black Machine finish with contrast-cut styling. The Ken’s Factory logo included on each part is intentionally kept small so that the part itself, with its distinctive design, remains the focal point.

The Vanquish cam and rocker covers work with the OEM gaskets, but come with all-new mounting hardware. Ken’s Factory produces other M-8 products in addition to the Vanquish cam and rocker covers. “Fat 5” Overdrive

Harness Big Power with a JIMS Transmission The Fat 5 Overdrive is a transmission upgrade for big-horsepower V-twin engines.

T

he horsepower and torque of some HarleyDavidsons has climbed off the charts. Big-bore kits and mega-displacement engines are doubling the output of a stock Harley. Couple that with a strong clutch and a big, sticky tire out back and the loads put on the transmission are way beyond what anyone ever expected an OE gearbox to handle.

Anyone but JIMS. The Fat 5 Overdrive is, as JIMS puts it, one strong gearbox. Taking advantage of a new, morecompact shifter technology JIMS was able to increase the 2nd Quarter.pdf 1 6/10/19 10:28 AM

width and strength of every gear inside the Fat 5, width increases varying from 18- to a whopping 53-percent depending upon the loads each gear set will carry. The Fat 5 Overdrive was built to take whatever’s thrown at it and come away smiling.

Fitting both Evo and Twin Cam chassis applications, the Fat 5 is available with a mechanically-activated clutch system only and can be had as a complete transmission or depending on make and model, a JIMS Super Kit. Either way, with all those bigger, stronger gears inside it’s going to be wider on the right side than an OEM Harley trans and may interfere with other components, similar to an aftermarket 6-speed. The Fat 5 Overdrive should be considered part of a custom, hot-rod build, not a drop-in replacement. ■

FAIRINGS

Freewheeler Fairings

Hoppe has a lineup of easy-on/easy-off touch screen fairings – complete with a full audio system – for Harley-Davidson’s Freewheeler Trike.

H

arley-Davidson’s Freewheeler was the answer to a simple question. Among riders looking at Trikes, would-be Tri-Glide buyers were asking for a smaller, less intimidating three-wheeler than that model. They wanted an easy handling, no-frills machine, something low and lean – a stripped-down, back-to-basics three-wheeler. The Freewheeler is that stripped-down, accessible Trike. But stripped-down doesn’t have to mean bare bones. With Hoppe’s three models of touch screen fairings – the Quadzilla, the 5566 and the 6 X 9 – Freewheeler riders can have all the comfort and wind protection of a full fairing when they want it, a fairing that incorporates a fully integrated and full-function/touch-screen audio system. When they don’t want it, that Hoppe fairing and its electronics are easily removed. Integrated with the Freewheeler’s OEM windshield mounts, and using a quickdetach power cord, the Hoppe touch screen fairings can go on or off the Trike in less than five minutes. They’re new and just now hitting the market (the Hoppe touch screen fairings are in the May 2019 Skinny) and three versions are available, each differentiated by its speaker layout. While all three versions have a Jensen JRV9000 AM/ FM/DVD head unit, and a big 6.2-inch high-definition TFT LCD screen, the Quadzilla has four 5-inch speakers, the 5566 version mounts two 5-inch speakers and two 6-inch speakers, and the 6 X 9 uses a pair of big, 6x9 speakers. All three of them feature built-in navigation, Bluetooth/ USB/HDM/audio-video inputs, a PA mic input, they’re all CD/MP3/WMA compatible, SiriusXM ready and camera compatible for up to three cameras.

The fairings include everything necessary for installation, and are made to integrate with the OEM windshield mounts.

The electronics come housed in a strong, good-looking fairing carefully designed for rider comfort. Constructed with hand-laid fiberglass and delivered with a paint-ready gel coat on both the inner and outer fairing surfaces, there’s a classic appearance and superb wind protection to go along with the audio systems. A concealed internal antenna and a 12-inch windshield maintains the Freewheeler’s clean, uncluttered look. Hoppe has included a weather door and internal shielding to protect the radio from water, and all the speakers in all the configurations are coaxial marine-grade for a great sound at any speed. ■
