he 1960s folk singer Bob Dylan sang that, “The times, they are a changin’.” That was true then and it’s true today. We know that print has its place, but many people now prefer to read online, and I’m happy to tell you that effective with this issue, your copy of Drag Specialties Magazine can now be with you on the go, readable not only in print form – as thousands have for over 25 years – but also on your computer, tablet and smartphone. The best advice I can give someone who asks how to make business improve is to know the answers to the questions your customers ask. Since, “I don’t know” is not an acceptable answer, you can take advantage of the information we provide in Drag Specialties Magazine so you know just what those products do that you are stocking. When you can explain the features and benefits of a product, your chances are good your customers will buy it. This is our annual Sturgis Rally Report issue, surely one of the most important events of the year for the V-twin business. Drag Specialties was setup as usual in the marketplace at Black Hills Harley-Davidson, as were many long-time vendors, and some new ones such as Alex Fox who unveiled his new Slyfox product line. Alex is the nephew of LeMans Corporation chairman Fred Fox and son of the late-great auto racing driver Stan Fox. You can learn more about Alex on page 38 and watch here for news about his new products in the months to come. Feedback I got from this year’s rally was that the overall attendance was slightly less than last year – likely some had held off to attend the 80th anniversary Sturgis Rally in 2020. The good news is that the vendors said that people this year were spending more money than at previous events. As we went to press, the 2019 LeMans North American NVP Product Expo has just concluded in Madison, WI. It was a powerful convention with everyone feeling very upbeat about the upcoming year. Watch for our big report on it in the next issue. ■

rag Specialties dealers attending the 2019 North American NVP Product Expo got their first look at the company’s new and improved dealer websites.
LeMans Corporation used the show in late August to announce that the dealer sites for Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited will see large-scale improvements through the introduction of an industry-first eCommercelike shopping experience. Some features of the new sites include more detailed product information than ever before, multiple, zoomable images and product videos, and faster order creation and processing. t looks like the 2019 edition of the powerhouse Indian Wrecking Crew is on their way to another championship in the American Flat Track Twin Series, presented by Vance & Hines. The only question not answered yet seems to be which of the three Indian factory team riders will earn that top spot in the final point standings? Jared Mees has come out on top the last two years, but his teammate, Briar Bauman, scored three wins in the last five races to pull ahead going into the home stretch. And while its more of a longshot, Briar’s brother Bronson is still within striking range if his teammates falter in the final races. Now in their third year together, Drag Specialties has enjoyed a great relationship and support of Jared Mees. This led to an increased commitment to the AFT series this year with the addition of brothers Briar and Bronson Bauman, who make up the balance of the Indian team. Together, Jared, Briar and Bronson have delivered on their end of the deal, winning 9 of the 14 National Championship races this season to date and holding down the first three places in the National point standings.

As was reported in the previous issue of Drag Specialties Magazine, Briar Bauman had opened the season with a win at the Daytona Beach TT, while teammate Mees responded three-fold with wins in Fort Worth, Texas; Lexington, Kentucky and Lima, Ohio. Bronson Baumann scored his solo win of the year at Laconia, New Hampshire. In the last five races, Briar Bauman got red hot in his pursuit of a first-ever career National Championship. Briar showed great versatility with two flat track wins, plus he made history with a victory at the 73rd annual Peoria TT National. Henry Wiles has held an unprecedented lock on that historic event for 14 years, but a recent injury forced him to skip this year’s race and every rider in the series rode their best to put their name in the record books. At the end of the day, Briar Bauman was the man on the top step of the podium with brother Bronson in second. ■
»» At the Sacramento Mile, Mees led Briar Bauman across the finish line to
score his fourth victory of the season, but at press time Bauman held a hefty 38-point lead with only five races to go. We’ll have a report in our next issue on how it all turned out, or log on to AmericanFlatTrack.com.

he Cal Expo Fairgrounds’ famous Sacramento Mile race track has four turns. Turns 1 and 3 constitute entry turns, while Turns 2 and 4 form the exits onto the track’s two long straightaways. If you ask Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/KTM rider Shayna Texter which of those four turns she likes best, chances are she’ll point to Turn 3, because that’s basically where she won the AFT Singles race in August. In doing so, she claimed her eighth career Mile win, nearly half of her total of 17 AFT Singles race wins. The Singles 15-lap race itself started with a bang as more than 10 riders formed a freight train up front for the lead. Drafting was the order of the day, but as the race neared its end only eight riders, among them Texter, remained in that pack. Texter used the entry into Turn 3 to set up for a pass on the outside of two competitors during the final lap. After dismissing them, she set her sights on Dan Bromley and Mikey Rush to draft by them on the straight for the win. She made it look simple. After the race Texter said from the top of the podium, “I just put it in so hard into [Turn] 3, and got myself in a really good position and then got a draft off these guys into the lead.” See? Easy as pie. ■

PRODUCTION TWINS HARLEY’S FIRST XG750R VICTORY!
Pro Beam / Black Hills HarleyDavidson rider Dalton Gauthier races to victory in the Production Twin class at the Sacramento Mile.
W
hen Drag Specialties signed on to sponsor Black Hills HarleyDavidson’s Production Twins race team this season, it got more than just two great riders in Dalton Gauthier and James Rispoli. Drag Specialties also got a piece of history when Gauthier won the Production Twins race at the Sacramento Mile in August. The race marked the first time the Harley-Davidson XG750R ever won an American Flat Track event. It wasn’t easy for Gauthier, either. He and Rispoli chased down race leader Cory Texter in tandem before Gauthier overtook both riders to take the lead, opening a three-second advantage to take the win. After the race a jubilant Gauthier said, “The whole Vance & Hines crew, everybody at Harley and Black Hills Harley-Davidson put me on this awesome motorcycle. This bike was working so good tonight. I couldn’t believe it. Right from the first lap in the Main, I knew it was going to be a good one.” The rest, as they say, is history. In this instance it’s Harley history, and Drag Specialties, Pro Beam by Custom Dynamics, and other sponsors will always be a part of that historic moment. ■
The moment that it sank in that Dalton had just scored the first-ever National victory on a HarleyDavidson XG750R.

like the other two bikes, eventually found a home with the owner of its respective winning raffle ticket. Born-Free also had plenty of showmanship to share, especially when the Ives brothers manned the Harley-Davidson Wall of Death to perform their death-defying act. Additional heart-stopping action could be found nearby at Vans’ halfpipe where pro skateboarders and BMX riders grabbed massive air and shredded the ramp.

Live music filled the aural senses throughout the weekend, and the big wheel (literally) kept on turning with the Ferris wheel ride that’s become a mainstay of Born-Free – the ride is free, costing show attendees only a few minutes of their time to hop aboard. The low-mount version of Bassani's muffler for the FTR 1200 is sure to generate plenty of buzz from fans of this bike.
NEW PIPES FOR INDIAN’S FTR 1200
W
hen Indian Motorcycle rolled out the FTR 1200 and fully-optioned 1200 S, a fast-growing segment of the V-twin world let out a cheer. These bikes check all the right boxes for those aggressive, stunt/action sport riders, your customers who have made the Dyna and FXR used bike market as hot as it is. Developed with plenty of input and inspiration from Indian’s race-winning Wrecking Crew American Flat Track Twins race team, the FTR slots right into the wheelhouse of what these riders want – a bike fully packed with sporty good looks and plenty of power and grunt.
Bassani Xhaust is tuned in to all of this. An active participant in the scene, in-person at the events and through a strong Instagram presence, the crew at Bassani knows what these riders want. The company heard them when they were clamoring for the upswept megaphone Road Rage 2-into-1 systems for Dynas and FXRs, and the team answered almost immediately when the Indian FTR bikes hit the streets by offering three new performance exhausts. With these new pipes, Bassani has replaced the two OE shotgun-style mufflers with a low-mount megaphone muffler, and a pair of high-mount options. The stainless steel mufflers slip right onto the Indian’s stock 2-into-1 head pipes and collector. continued on page 22...

The version of Bassani’s high-mount muffler that eliminates the OE catalytic converter. All versions of the muffler bolt right up to the stock headpipes.
Don’t let all this excitement over the Indian FTR 1200 distract from the attention riders are still giving those older Dynas and FXRs, and certainly not from the popularity of all the Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 pipes for them. Available styles, options, fitments and applications run the gamut. The range includes mild-steel Road Rage 2-into-1s, pipes with a black finish and chrome-plated systems. There are even versions designed specifically for big-inch, high-horsepower bikes. Bassani also offers systems ending with straight can mufflers as well as systems with long or short megaphones. The Road Rage III is available in an all stainless steel 2-into-1 design that is hugely popular with the sporting V-twin crowd.
...continued from page 20
Two of the styles – the low-mount, and one of the highmount mufflers – eliminate the OEM resonator/catalytic convertor box. The second high-mount version retains the box. All three have that single Bassani-designed short stainless steel megaphone muffler, that is 4 inches in diameter and is completely TIG-welded by hand. The setup is finished off with a billet aluminum slash cut end cap and a removable internal baffle. An exhaust swap is one of the first changes owners of new motorcycles make, especially when the OE system is big and heavy looking. And, the mufflers on the FTRs don’t exactly add to the whole flat track racer, action-sport vibe. Bassani’s single megaphones do. Both style systems have the look these bikes need and riders want.
The online forums and social media communities frequented by these riders often name Bassani’s Road Rage lineup as the pipes to have for Dynas, FXRs and Sportsters. From the ports to the tip of the muffler, a Road Rage is all about performance. With a reputation like this, it makes perfect sense why Bassani would step up with a trio of exhausts for the newest entry – and arguably the sportiest model to choose from – in that sport riding, stunt/action community of riders, the Indian Motorcycle FTR 1200 and 1200 S. When those riders come calling, point them to Bassani.
»» Talk with your Drag Specialties sales rep for details, and get further information, photos and sound clips at www.bassanipipes.com. Keep up with @bassanixhaust on Instagram and Twitter.
As with all Bassani products, there’s more than just good looks here. The FTR mufflers maximize horsepower and torque, and feature that signature Bassani tone, an aggressive bark to go with the power boost. Riders scouting the dealerships and circling around these newest Indians are likely to be looking for an exhaust change. Bassani has it, and all three options are easy on any action-sport rider’s wallet. The low mounts have a suggested retail of $429.95, the suggested retail for the high mounts, catalytic convertor or not, is $449.95. Drag Specialties has them all right now. One version of Bassani’s high-mount muffler retains the FTR 1200’s catalytic converter.

The full list of everything used, everything ready to be seen, talked about and fully explained at any one of the stops along the Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour, is listed in the accompanying build sheet on these pages. Have a look. ■

Report THE 2019 RALLY IS IN THE BOOKS / AUGUST 2-11 2019
O
nce again, the Black Hills of South Dakota echoed with the thunderous roar of tens of thousands of V-twins as riders descended on the region for the 79th annual Sturgis Rally. And, just like that, the rally is in the history books. By all accounts, the annual gathering of V-twin fanatics from around the world was a big success with traffic counts reporting crowds on par with the 2018 rally. From the slow rolling mass of bikers in downtown Sturgis and the happenings in Rapid City, to the old west appeal of nearby Deadwood and the vast riding areas of points beyond, the hills were alive with rallygoers aiming to have a rollicking good time. In addition to events being held all throughout the area, there were concerts at the Full Throttle Saloon as well as American Flat Track racing with the Buffalo Chip TT and the Black Hills Half-Mile. Fans of the run-what-ya-brung Hooli-
gan scene had two choices for dirt-spitting action – the Hooligan Hill Climb and the Moto Stampede Super-Hooligan flat track series at the Buffalo Chip. No rally is complete without a trip to check out the latest and greatest from the V-twin aftermarket’s biggest vendors, and once again the hotspot was the exhibit area at Black Hills Harley-Davidson. The Drag Specialties show truck was on hand with support from many of its leading vendors. The lineup included Bel-Ray, Custom Dynamics, Dakota Digital, Drag Specialties, Klock Werks, Progressive Suspension, Rekluse, Saddlemen, S&S Cycle, and Vance & Hines. Of course, next year’s 80th anniversary of the storied event is already looking to be a doozy with the V-twin faithful sure to return another week of great riding and good times.

High Quality, Higher Value Cable and Wiring Made Easy
H
andlebar upgrades and installs are often a first choice when it comes time for your HarleyDavidson-riding customers to upgrade their motorcycles. It’s a change that rests on both aesthetic appeal, and on upgrading their bikes’ controls.
LA Choppers makes it easy to find cable and wiring kits when your customers go for a handlebar swap. Simply enter the requested information and you’ll not only get info on the kits available, you’ll also get a Drag Specialties part number that you can pass on to your sales rep.
It’s likely that many of your customers know that any handlebar taller than 12 inches typically requires longer cables and wiring in order to accommodate for the increased height. However, finding the correct length cables and wiring can sometimes be a real struggle. LA Choppers has made this step virtually foolproof by creating the website www.handlebarcables.com. Once on the site, all your parts counter worker has to do is select the make, model, year, whether or not it is ABS or nonABS, and the height of handlebar that is being installed. (There is even an opportunity to select handlebars from those other manufacturers in the FatBook and OldBook.) After all of those selections are made, the website provides a list of the exact right cable kits available for that particular bike and handlebar height, and includes the Drag Specialties’ part number for quick ordering through your Drag sales rep. It’s really that simple.
LA Choppers has cable and wiring kits for a huge range of Harley-Davidsons, and any possible handlebar combination. This includes the new Milwaukee-Eight Softails and a number of popular LA Choppers handlebars such as the Prime Apes, Twin Peaks and Kage Fighters. ■
»» Just like all LA Choppers cable kits, these are a direct replacement for the stock cables and wiring. High quality, and high value, what more could you ask for? Talk with your Drag rep for details and get more information at www.lachoppers.com. You can also check out @lachoppers on Instagram.
The results also give three options for finishes – standard black with chrome fittings, midnight black with black fittings, and stainless steel with chrome fittings. It also breaks down each kit and provides Drag Specialties part numbers for all of the different components included in the kit. For example, if the customer is in need of only a clutch cable, the Drag part number will be available in the kit breakdown. The results also show part numbers for full kits with wiring and without, including plug and play wiring if it is available on that model. Speaking of wiring – if the customer has a newer Harley Touring bike, and is planning on installing taller handlebars, make sure you order up the plug-and-play wiring kit. This will not only provide a cleaner install, but also speeds up the install process exponentially. No need to solder any wires, just plug the connectors in and your customer is ready to hit the highway.

Sturgis Light Show Three New LED Products

ustom Dynamics’ factory rig at Black Hills HarleyDavidson was buzzing with three new product releases during the 79th Sturgis Rally, which riders could get installed on-site for an immediate boost in nighttime visibility. Riders and dealers even got to tune in live via social media to watch the unveiling of the lighting options for Harleys. The new products are all designed to increase a rider’s view of the road ahead and provide added visibility, with ProBEAM LED halo fog lamps, LED vent inserts for Road Glides and a ProBEAM Adaptive LED headlamp that features the latest in LED technology. Like all other Custom Dynamics LED products, each of the new products includes the company’s lifetime LED warranty. The ProBEAM LED halo fog lamps have a diminutive lens that’s just more than 2 inches in diameter, but they throw a lot of light on the road thanks to Cree LEDs. The super bright white LED halo illuminates continuously, while the advanced optics offer extreme light output (430 Effective Lumens at 13.2V) that produces an outstanding beam pattern. The adjustable beam fills in the dark area between the bike and the low-beam headlamp pattern, and they can be independently turned on and off with an integrated push-button switch. The fog lamps come in a chrome or black finish. In addition to the plug-and-play installation for most Harley and Indian models, the lights are also available for universal applications. stock headlamp, providing additional white LED running lights and amber LED turn signals behind a smoked lens. The complete vent insert includes a decorative mesh that bridges the space between the headlamp and the fairing for a seamless look. The inserts come in a gloss black or chrome finish, with either a stainless or black mesh. The ProBEAM Adaptive LED headlamps are a significant addition to the Custom Dynamics product line. The ProBEAM line is already known as a quality lighting solution, but now the headlamps benefit from JW Speaker’s proprietary Adaptive technology. Adaptive technology turns the headlamp into a smart device, enabling the light to sense when the bike is leaning so it can redirect the beam to illuminate dark corners. The real-time redirection is achieved by calculating bank angles using proprietary technology and on-board sensors, automatically directing the light array up or down as the motorcycle leans while on both high and low beam. Available in 7-inch and 5¾-inch sizes, the ProBEAM Adaptive LED headlamps feature premium automotive LEDs with a chrome or black reflector. The 7-inch version now comes conveniently packaged with all required components for Touring models, including a mounting ring for 2013 and earlier bikes, as well as a wiring adapter for 2014 to current bikes. ■

or many riders, just the sound of a V-twin engine revving and the wind blowing by is music to their ears. For others, an actual soundtrack takes the ride to the next level of enjoyment. If the idea of listening to their favorite songs while cruising the open road gets your customers’ hearts pumping, then KICKER has the audio equipment they need. Drag Specialties is now carrying KICKER Plug-n-Play audio kits for Harley Davidson’s Electra Glide, Street Glide, Ultra Glide, and Road Glide models from 1996 on. Building a high-quality sound system for motorcycles is no easy task. “You can’t just take a car audio speaker and relabel it as a marine or powersport product,” says Lori Boyer, KICKER’s Southeast regional sales manager. “Each market has specific conditions that have to be designed around, and all our powersports products are engineered to sound incredible over wind and road noise, to minimally impact the charging systems and to be extremely durable and reliable in extreme conditions.”
KICKER founder Steve Irby got his start in a one-car garage building audio equipment for his band. Irby came from a family of tinkerers, and as a keyboard player he wanted better sound equipment to make his music shine. Rather than spend $300 on a new amplifier, Steve and his father hit the library and learned how to build their own, and it sounded great. Irby’s amplifier, speaker and housing hobby has grown into a business with approximately 200 employees and a worldwide network of dealers. Although Irby’s company is still based in his hometown of Stillwater, OK, he’s left the garage behind in favor of an impressive 280,000 square-foot facility.
When it comes to assembling a sound system for motorcycles, speaker size, packaging constraints, weather exposure, and of course road and wind noise all pose their challenges. Luckily, KICKER has nearly 50 years of audio-engineering experience to draw on, experience that includes studio, automotive, marine and personal equipment. And, it all started in a humble location that motorcyclists are sure to appreciate – a garage.
Drag Specialties will now carry KICKER’s Harley kits, which include both front and rear replacement speakers that are significant upgrades over the stock units.

KICKER
KICKER has had audio upgrades for Harley-Davidson models since 2010, and the offerings continue to evolve and improve. From individual parts like 5¼-inch and 6x9-inch coaxial speakers to weather-resistant amplifiers and speaker cans, KICKER has progressed to complete plug-n-play packages that include everything a rider needs to upgrade their Harley’s sound system. Drag Specialties will now carry KICKER’s plug-n-play Harley kits to upgrade both front and rear speaker sets. Kits include a pair of 5¼-inch speakers for model years 1996 through 2013, or 6½-inch speakers for 2014 and newer models. They also include a compact amplifier, custom-designed powder-coated steel mounting brackets and a 100 percent plug-and-play wire harness that requires no cutting, drilling or splicing. The plug-n-play kits retain a clean factory look and integrate seamlessly with the stock radio with no need for an aftermarket head unit. Why would your customers want to swap out their factory stereo? Harley’s sound systems are pretty good, but what sets KICKER’s systems apart from OE is the quality of the components and their tuning. KICKER’s coaxial speakers integrate floating tweeters for full-spectrum sound and utilize higher quality components for improved efficiency, lighter weight, and durability. KICKER’s compact amplifiers create a clean signal with less distortion, all while pushing out more amps and taking up less space than most stock units. It’s a high-powered system worthy of a true audiophile, yet it’s small enough to tuck away inside a fairing or saddlebag. ■

he Dunlop team had a busy time at Sturgis, from showing off the brand’s premium V-twin tire line, American Elite, to helping the next generation of riders get started on two wheels.
Dunlop was set up at both Black Hills Harley-Davidson and J&P Cycles, welcoming crowds of riders who came to check out the events, contests and products. Dunlop and Drag Specialties brand ambassador Carey Hart was onsite for an autograph session at Black Hills, and Dunlop had a giveaway for a free STACYC electric balance bike for kids. Dunlop is also the Official Tire of American Flat Track, so racing fans got to see Dunlop’s DT3 Flat Track tires in action there.
Dunlop was frontand-center at the 2019 Sturgis Rally and its American Elite tires were a big draw for customers coming into Black Hills Harley-Davidson and J&P Cycles.
The American Elite tires were one of the big draws for Dunlop, as riders got to check out the premium tires in person and learn about their American origins. The touring/ cruiser tires are completely designed in the USA from foreign and domestic materials. Dunlop engineers designed the American Elite tires at Dunlop’s American facility, with all testing conducted at the Dunlop Proving Grounds in Hunstville, AL. The Dunlop manufacturing plant in Buffalo, NY handles all manufacturing for the American Elite line. The American Elite tires are about more than their origin, of course. They are an ideal choice for V-twin touring riders who need a tire that offers longevity, wet-weather confidence and stability in all conditions. Dunlop’s MT Multi-Tread technology increases the mileage capability of the American Elite tires. The technology also improves handling characteristics, making it an even more valuable addition to the tire’s design. Greater lean angle, better stability, improved wet grip, more neutral steering characteristics and improved bump compliance are some of the handling benefits of Dunlop MT Multi-Tread technology.
Dunlop’s American Elite tires are an ideal choice for your V-twin touring customers who need a tire that offers longevity, wetweather confidence and stability in all conditions.
As the name implies, MT Multi-Tread technology includes two different compounds in the rear tire. The center of the tread is made from a long-wearing compound to help stack up the touring miles, while the shoulders are made of a compound that improves lateral grip and handling. There are 28 different size and style options for most Harley-Davidson models as well as select Victory and Indian models. Style choices include all black or a white sidewall stripe in a narrow or wide width. The American Elite name is prominently displayed on each tire. ■

LUBRICANTS
V-Twins and Viscosity
Specially-Formulated Oils and Lubricants
Bel-Ray’s V-twin lineup includes oils and lubricants to suit different riding styles, different models and even different budgets. The products were specifically developed for V-twins, and are all manufactured in the United States.
B
el-Ray had a record year at Sturgis in 2018, performing a massive number of full-service oil changes for riders. Not surprisingly, 2019 was another banner year for Bel-Ray. Riders could head to one of two Drag Specialties dealers, Black Hills Harley-Davidson or Speed’s Performance Plus, to get their oil changed or to learn about the benefits of Bel-Ray’s V-twin products for Harleys. That product list isn’t a short one, and it includes oils and lubricants to suit different riding styles, different models and even different budgets. All of the products were specifically developed for V-twins, and they are all manufactured in the United States. Bel-Ray’s premium oil option for Harleys is V-twin Synthetic, a 10W-50 oil that is combined with highperformance additivities to ensure safe and easy cold starts plus increased component protection. The V-twin Synthetic oil has Bel-Ray’s highest viscosity index for improved viscosity protection, even at high temperatures. Added to that is exceptional shear stability, which further reduces viscosity loss. The oil also reduces friction, which helps decrease operating temperatures to provide increased engine performance. V-twin Semi-Synthetic oil has a lot of premium perks, but its price is attractive to riders who want performance on a budget. The 20W-50 Semi-Synthetic oil combines the benefits of fully-synthetic oils with the lower cost of petroleum oils. The high film strength improves component protection, and the formula provides a stable viscosity across a wide range of temperatures. The oil removes deposits, dissipates heat and lowers friction to reduce engine operating temperatures. Improved oxidation resistance helps an engine stay clean and properly functioning.

Value-priced, but still carefully developed to provide big benefits, the V-twin Mineral 20W-50 oil lowers operating temperatures while also minimizing deposit formation for a cleaner, cooler-running engine. It is formulated with a high viscosity index, and the formula helps reduce evaporation loss. The oil exceeds OEM specifications, and it is a versatile choice that can be used for the engine, primary and transmission. Big Twin Transmission Oil features Bel-Ray’s exclusive extreme-pressure chemistry, which protects gear components from the destructive effects of shock loading. High levels of lubricity reduces sliding friction to ensure better power and smooth, quiet shifting. Oxidation protection and long-lasting viscosity result in an oil that has extended performance over time as well as across a wide temperature range. Bel-Ray also has a Primary Chaincase Lubricant for Big Twin models. Ideally suited for high pressures, the specially-formulated lubricant helps ensure long service life for the primary chain. It also works to prevent clutch slipping and chatter, even in hot stop-and-go traffic. Sportsters also get a dedicated product in the form of Sport Transmission Fluid. Specially formulated just for Sportster models, the high-quality lubricant resists oxidation and viscosity breakdown for extended performance. The fluid also works to prevent clutch slipping and chatter for a smoother ride. ■

Voyager Luggage
Bags for Discriminating Riders
This sissybar bag is one of the latest additions to Burly Brand’s range of Voyager luggage. The bag has hidden backpack straps for mobility, and can be mounted to most sissybars.
B
urly Brand’s Voyager luggage lineup features tank, tail, handlebar and sissybar bags, backpacks, map pockets, saddlebags, and tool rolls, and all of the pieces as unique as the materials used to make them. Offered in waxed cotton, a heavy-duty/water-resistant canvas, deep-brown and trimmed with distressed-brown leather, or an equally tough black Cordura nylon with distressed black leather, the gear turns heads. The look is tough and it’s timeless. The features included make this gear as useful as it is visually appealing. The roll-top backpack is sure to become an essential. A fully padded interior has a partition for a 15-inch laptop, there’s a pass-through port for charging cables or audio cords and a large zippered front pocket is perfect for loose items. A roll-top with snap closures allows height to be varied and an anti-flail snap system keeps things in place. There are flannel lined shoulder straps and moto-centric speed buckles and zippers hidden behind leather straps. At an MSRP of $124.95, it’ll be a favorite. Burly’s tank/tail bag, secured with either a strong magnetic system or D-ring anchors, can be equally at home on the tank, or cinched to a seat or a rack. Two exterior pockets and a generous interior with elastic sides deliver plenty of storage space, and there’s a pass-through port for charging accessories. The anti-flail snap system is here keeping everything in its place, and there’s a detachable magnetic map/accessory pocket that stretches to hold smartphones, tablets, even small GPS units. Suggested retail is $189.95, while the map pocket by itself is $49.95. The saddlebags have an internal framework to help them keep their shape and a roll-top closure and snap/ hook-and-loop sealing system keeps out the elements. A

Suggested retail for the saddlebags is $199.95, while the mounting brackets retail for $119.95 The tool roll features an eight-pocket system and zippered pocket, and accommodates multiple tools. Its adjustable quick-release mount works on handlebars, sissy bars or the side of the frame. Suggested retail for the tool roll is $74.95. The two newest additions are the sissybar bag and the handlebar bag. The sissybar bag has hidden backpack straps and a leather-wrapped grab handle for duffel bag mobility. Two tie-down straps secure the MOLLE system to most sissybars. The handlebar bag can mount just about anywhere and its generous interior and exterior pockets can swallow plenty of gear and keep it all at hand. A universal fit means the handlebar bag can be mounted just about anywhere, but it works especially well with most T-bar setups. Retail prices are, respectively, $159.95 and $54.95. ■

A Different Animal
Performance V-Twin Brand Slyfox Launches at Sturgis The 29-year-old Fox is the nephew of Fred Fox and the son of the late Stan Fox, a race car driver whose career spanned from Midget racing on dirt tracks to the Indy 500. Growing up, it was pretty clear that Fox would follow the path of either his uncle or his father. The powersports industry eventually won out, and Fox has been working for various brands for the past decade to hone his expertise.

f you’re going to launch a new brand of V-twin products, there’s no better place to do it than Sturgis. Alex Fox officially revealed plans for his Slyfox brand at the Rally, taking the wraps off the first four products on his custom Bagger. They will be available soon from Drag Specialties. And, if you’re wondering whether there’s any connection between this Fox and LeMans Corporation founder and chairman Fred Fox, that would be a big yes. The younger Fox is part of a family legacy of powersports and performance.

OCTOBER 2019
“I’ve been working in the industry for 10 years, but I was kind of born into it at the same time. I grew up in a house on Fred’s property. Fred built his first facility in Janesville when I was about 1 year old,” says Fox. “I’ve been around Fred my whole life and he’s always been a role model to me, and he kind of forged my path to this. I could have worked for LeMans, but I chose to build my own brand.” The first step of building his own brand was choosing which part of the powersports industry to focus on. Fox has been riding since he was about 8 years old, and both his riding history and his career path have allowed him to try out a lot of different segments. “I started with dirtbikes and four-wheelers to get the taste for it, and I had a shifter kart when I was younger that my dad got me,” Fox says. “Once I got older, I’d worked in the V-twin side, I’d worked in the Metric side, I’ve even worked in the watercraft side, and the one that I found the most appealing, and that I have the most fun with is the V-twin side. There’s just a passion that goes along with HarleyDavidsons and people building their Harleys. It’s just different than any other type of motorcycling I’ve experienced.”

Fox knew he was going to focus on performance parts, but he never expected any of them to be made of carbon fiber. The first products available, which were all on display at Sturgis, include an aluminum top triple tree plus carbon fiber side panels, saddlebag lids and a front fender. “My goal was just to do hard parts, I never intended on doing carbon fiber,” Fox explains. “I went to Supercross and I met a vendor that handled carbon fiber and a conversation happened. It kind of fell into the wheelhouse of what I was going with, which was performance. Carbon fiber became a reality.” Carbon fiber fit right in with Fox’s mission to make parts that reduce weight, perform well and look good, all at the same time. The aluminum top tree also meets those requirements, saving weight over stock and allowing a rider to have a dash that looks cleaner and more streamlined. Once Fox knew what he would be making, the only thing left was to pick a name. Slyfox was an easy choice, drawing from both his family name and his longtime personal Instagram handle, one_sly_fox.
SLYFOX
Alex Fox is part of a family legacy of powersports and performance. He is the nephew of LeMans Corporation founder Fred Fox and the son of the late Stan Fox, a race car driver whose career spanned from Midget racing on dirt tracks to the Indy 500. At the 2018 Sturgis Rally, Alex had the opportunity to ride his late father’s personal bike, a motorcycle that appears on the cover of the 2018-2019 OldBook.
In order to launch at Sturgis, design and prototyping had to start back in January. Fox, who is based in Huntington Beach, CA, got the final production prototypes just in time to debut them on his Bagger. After Sturgis, Fox was off to the North American NVP Product Expo in Madison so dealers could get their first look at the new parts. While Slyfox will focus on Bagger parts initially, Fox intends to expand in the future, probably starting with Softail applications. As a younger rider himself, Fox wants to produce parts that appeal to the next generation of riders. “Now the younger riders are more performance-oriented,” he says. “We like the Harleys, and we’re trying to get the most performance out of them. It’s just a different animal.” ■

HRASHIN’s bag line has added some new members to the family this year.
What began with the original handlebar bag and saddlebag options now includes two more bar bag options, a new tool roll add-on and a duffle bag that can be used on and off the bike. Each bag is constructed from high-quality materials, and all are designed with key features for seamless travel. These new options offer your customers a little extra storage space to go that extra mile. The bag THRASHIN is most excited to release is the Mission Duffle Bag. Created for long rides, it is compatible with a sissy bar and also versatile for trips off the bike. With its three access locations, dirty clothes divider, YKK zippers, Hi-Viz interior and waterproof rain cover, this bag is a go-to option for every adventure. Another highly anticipated piece is the Utility Bag. The Utility Bag was originally designed to accommodate customers who wanted a handlebar bag for their ape hangers. Like each of THRASHIN’s bags, the 9-inch x 4-inch x 3½-inch bag has a Hi-Viz interior and YKK zippers along with THRASHIN’s signature MOLLE webbing. The Utility’s mounting possibilities range far beyond just the ape hangers. Thanks to the MOLLE webbing on all sides, it can mount just about anywhere with the included hookand-loop straps, giving a customer nearly universal options. After the success of the original Handlebar Bag (which measured 5 inches x 7 inches x 3½ inches), THRASHIN has released its Handlebar Bag Plus, highlighting the details

As the name implies, the Essential saddlebags are sized just for the essentials, while the Escape bags are ideally sized for a weekend trip. Light structuring helps the bags retain their shape, and a highvisibility interior makes it easy to find things. A waterproof cover is included in the Escape Saddlebags. ■

The Wild Ones

T
here are over 150 parts numbers for Wild 1 handlebars and accessories in the FatBook and OldBook. Some of those handlebars are the same designs that helped launch the company 23 years ago, proving that some classic looks never go out of style. Now well-known for the quality and styling of its thickest handlebars known as Chubbys®, Wild 1 actually took a while to get off the ground. The company’s founder, Don Schultz, and his team wanted to make sure their handlebars were perfect before they went into production. “It was basically trial and error,” says Wild 1’s Johnny Vaughn, who has been with the company since its inception. “It took about a year and a half, just to get it dialed in to where the left side was equal to the right side and everything was working properly to where we could actually start selling stuff. And it took a lot of money and a lot of training because we were bound and determined to get this handled.”

OCTOBER 2019
Despite that trial and error, the team at Wild 1 at least had two things going in their favor. They were all avid HarleyDavidson riders who attended rallies across the U.S., so they knew what they wanted in a handlebar and they knew what other riders wanted, too. They had also made one-off handlebars for custom builds when the company was still a repair shop called Wild Rides. When the company changed from a repair shop to a handlebar production company, choosing the new name of Wild 1 seemed perfect. It spun off the original name and it was a nod to the 1954 Marlon Brando film “The Wild One”. Today, more than two decades after its founding, Wild 1 is still based in Huntington Beach, CA. Although Schultz has passed away, his wife still owns the company and his two sons are highly involved. The Chubby logo that is still in use was originally hand drawn by Schultz. Wild 1 handlebars are meticulously designed and manufactured, all at their shop in Huntington Beach. All of the materials used to manufacture the handlebars and billet aluminum parts are from mills based in the United States.

WILD 1
In addition to its big range of handlebar styles, Wild 1 also offers a lineup of risers and top clamps.
Chubby handlebars are actually two layers of tubing. Oneinch tubing is cut to the total handlebar length, then the center part is knurled for clamping. From there, 1¼-inch diameter steel tubing is slid over the smaller tube and TIG welded in place. The bars are then bent into shape. The one-inch steel tube is a high-strength variety to add durability, and the 1¼-inch tube is made of a steel that polishes to an especially bright finish. Where the controls mount to the bars, the steel is stepped down to the required 1-inch diameter, instead of pressed. That creates a perfect edge for the controls to butt up against the Chubby section, providing a clean look. The bars are notched to work with throttle-by-wire setups, but they also work with older models that still have cable controls. For Vaughn, working on new handlebars is one of the best parts of the job. “I’m the R&D guy here, so I go down to the dealerships when the new models come out, and they let me rip them apart on the showroom floor, which is kind of nice,” he says. “It’s a blast. It’s like getting paid for a hobby.”
Wild 1’s gauge relocation bracket allows Street Bob and Breakout customers to use T-bars, including the company’s own 1¼-inch Chubby T-bars.
Hooked Chubbys are the latest Wild 1 design. The handlebars have a hooked design and come in heights of 10 inches, 12 inches, 14 inches and 16 inches. The inside corners are smooth so that wires feed through easier and won’t get torn up. It’s that sort of attention to detail that the Wild 1 team takes pride in. In addition to handlebars, Wild 1 also manufactures billet risers, top clamps, bushings, adapters, gauge relocation brackets and other control-oriented parts. The Chubby billet risers have the same 1¼-inch diameter as the Chubby handlebars, adding to the overall look of the fat bars. With so many designs and heights to choose from, picking out the right cables to go with a set of Chubbys can be a challenge. Dealers are encouraged to call or email the Wild 1 tech department to find out the correct cable length for each handlebar setup. That service is part of Wild 1’s commitment to dealers, which includes a MAP policy to ensure fair pricing. ■

obra seems to be driven this year by relentless product development and nonstop product introductions. In fact, since the beginning of the year, Cobra dropped its new *Turn-Out 2-into-1 exhaust into the mix, announced that its *headpipes for the Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam engines were available in dual bung versions and came out with a the *El Diablo 2-into-1 for the Fat Boy. Even more exciting has been Cobra’s expansion of its accessory line of products for the V-twin segment. Last season, Cobra’s line of detachable backrests and racks really took off, and this year Cobra added a lot more fitments for the new Softails, and for the older Dynas and Sportsters. For this year, there is a new detachable rack for Baggers and two solo detachable racks for Softails, Sportsters, and Dynas.
Cobra’s *Turn Out 2-into-1 exhaust is designed to provide plenty of power and style.
This new rack is called the Big-Ass Rack and it’s nearly 18-inches wide and 13½-inches deep. It has a slight kick up at the rear to help keep things securely in place. For Bagger fitments, it uses Cobra’s docking hardware and works with the detachable backrest. It uses the same spring-loaded pull-pin mechanism as the backrest and standard sized rack. The rack is available in chrome or gloss black. For Softails, Sportsters and Dynas, Cobra has two versions (standard and Big-Ass) of its new solo racks, and each comes with all the necessary hardware needed for a quick and easy installation. (These racks do not work with nor require the Harley-Davidson mounting kits.) They use laser cut side rails welded to the tubed rack. The Big-Ass rack is not designed to haul home a refrigerator from your local Home Depot on the back of your Sportster, but it will allow you to cart home that extra bag of groceries. It’s one more way Cobra focuses on products that are functional and help to make your customers’ motorcycles just a little more practical.
Big-Ass Rack for the Bagger can be used alone or with the detachable backrest. Shown here with the new short backrest.
Cobra also introduced a short detachable backrest for Bagger models. It comes with a smaller pad, which rests a few inches above the stock seat height. The shorter backrest provides a bit of lumbar support and can also be used as a stop should you want to bungee something to the seat. ■

TIRES
Past, Present and Future Tires for Every Era of Motorcycle
In the rear, a dual-compound tread with firmer rubber down the center and softer rubber on the shoulders balances straight-line durability with cornering grip, and it’s all wrapped around a sport-touring carcass that features steeper geometry for lighter, sharper handling. At the same time, the carcass chords are tuned for compliance and stability, whether your customer is riding alone or with a passenger and luggage. On top of that, a new tread pattern featuring long parabolic grooves and short wedges looks sporty, but also serves to support and compliment the functionality of modern safety systems like traction control and ABS. For more traditional riders seeking a longwearing all-around tire, your customers can’t go wrong with the ME888 Marathon. The successor to Metzeler’s legendary ME880, the Triple 8 brings some key improvements to the table, such as a new more resilient rubber compound that permits the use of deeper tread grooves for better durability and grip in the rain.
The Cruisetec is Metzeler’s most advanced, tech-laden offering, and it’s a perfect fit for customers seeking improved traction and handling for their American V-twins.
I
f experience counts for anything these days, then Metzeler deserves consideration any time your customers come in for tires. After all, Metzeler began making motorcycle tires in 1892, so the company has been in business since motorcycling was in its infancy. In the past 120 years, Metzeler has grown and evolved alongside the motorcycle industry, pursuing and adopting new technologies, incorporating new materials, and constantly updating its products to suit the steady advancement of today’s cruisers, tourers and other heavy bikes. The Cruisetec is Metzeler’s most advanced, tech-laden offering, and it’s a perfect fit for customers seeking improved traction and handling for their American V-twins. Designed to meet or exceed the mileage offered by OEM tires, Cruisetec tires up the ante with quick steering response, excellent cornering stability, and solid grip in all weather conditions. V-twin customers looking for a long-wearing, all-around-tire should check out the ME888 Marathon. It’s a quick, responsive tire that offers great grip in the rain.

To further increase mileage, the 888 has a flat and wide geometry that diverts flex to the sidewalls, helping reduce heat and wear at the footprint. A new tread pattern with inclined groove edges helps eliminate road harmonics for a quiet, smooth ride, as well to promote uniform wear over the life of this high-mileage tire. Made in bias-ply and radial constructions in over 60 sizes, there’s an ME880 Marathon available to fit just about any cruiser, Bagger, or custom your customers bring in.
Even though Metzeler is focused on the future of motorcycling, it still respects the past. Motorcyclists who enjoy riding older equipment can outfit their bikes with fresh rubber in the form of the Perfect ME77. With its classic center groove and block tread pattern, the ME77 Metzeler looks great on retro bikes while providing a modern ME77 tread compound and construction technologies. For nearly 130 years Metzeler has built high-quality tires for every era of motorcycle. From the early gaspowered bicycles to today’s powerful and incredible machines, Metzeler has been there to provide the right rubber for the job. ■

Strength with Style V-Twin Fastener Kits
When it’s time to button up that V-twin motor after a hot-rod rebuild, Feuling has a lineup of fasteners, super-strong bolts and studs that are stronger than OE, and even Grade 8 fasteners.
R
eassembling a hot-rod V-twin engine with the OEM bolts and studs removed during disassembly is false economy. Those high-lift cams, bigbore cylinders, custom-ported heads or stroker cranks now inside that V-twin didn’t come cheap; now is not the time to skimp on the hardware holding it all together. Pro builders know this and so do the techs at Feuling Parts. The answer? The full lineup of Feuling Fasteners, super-strong bolts and studs manufactured by ARP® and made in America to Feuling’s exact specifications. There are head bolt kits, cylinder stud kits, internal cam plate/oil pump packages, and complete 12-point external fastener kits with a show finish. They’re all in the FatBook with applications covering Evos, Milwaukee-Eights, Sportsters, Twin-Cams, and many different aftermarket engines. This is no compromise, high-quality hardware. The head bolts feature 180,000-PSI tensile strength, and are much stronger than OEM, and even Grade 8 fasteners. With precision formed threads, wide flanges and hardened chamfered washers there is optimum engagement, no galling and consistent torque loadings. The Cylinder Studs – heat-treated 8740 chrome moly steel – are reusable, unlike one-time-use OEM studs, and they carry a lifetime warranty. All the internal fasteners are just as good. The cam plate/oil pump kit, for instance, is all 12-point, heat-treated chrome moly with precision-rolled threads, wide flanges and a tensile strength of 170,000 PSI. To finish things off in style, there are polished stainless-steel dress-up fasteners to secure all the external covers. Investing in quality fasteners is money well spent, a prudent final step when it’s time to re-assemble that engine and get all the finishing touches all buttoned up. ■

He grew up in a family-owned auto business that’s been recycling old parts for more than 75 years now, but motorcycles had always been his real passion.

SPADY’S SPEED SHOP
Having spent time in New England’s backwoods riding dirtbikes, he developed the itch for making a living from the very passion that fueled his fire. It helped, too, that some of his riding buddies who appreciated his knack for fabricating bits and pieces for damaged motorcycles had urged Willis to build a chopper, of all things, and that’s what led to forming his business. “Yeah, I was a pretty good fabricator and the Biker Build-offs were popular at the time, and one thing led to another,” he says. That “another” was Spadafora Choppers, initially situated in an abandoned cement-walled painting booth on the family’s business property that was known collectively as Spadafora Auto Parts. “I asked my parents if they would mind me branching out like that,” he recalls, “and they offered an abandoned spray booth, which I immediately accepted and occupied as my shop.” It was a modest beginning, he admits, but it was a beginning. First order of business was to build a custom chopper, so he visited noted motorcycle frame builder Mark Rowe of Rowe Machine for some advice, and a handbuilt frame. “I learned a lot from Mark,” Willis says. “He took me under his wing.” And, with that, Spadafora Choppers was on its way. From the confines of that old painting booth sprang forth some of the nicest custom long bikes New England had to offer. Among those builds were bikes destined to support various charity fundraisers, and from there the company’s reputation grew.
Performance Baggers such as this share four major components – good brakes, quality suspension, a powerful engine and eye-catching looks.
Pause now to focus on Centore, age 24, whose custom bike journey actually begins with an ice hockey stick in his hands. As a youngster, he played junior league ice hockey and, when he was a youngster, his coach happened to be a supportive dad named Ray Willis, whose son also was on the team. When Centore discovered that Willis owned a custom bike business, the young lad made tracks to see what it was all about. Willis recalls Centore’s inquisitive mind, “He didn’t even know what a ratchet was, but he wanted to learn.” That thirst for knowledge eventually led to employment at Willis’ shop, and as the boy grew to be a man Spadafora Choppers grew to occupy bigger digs on the family business property. Spadafora Choppers continued morphing with the times, too. As the chopper craze from those volatile Biker Build-off cable-network programs subsided, and the Bagger movement snowballed, the two turned more attention to those overland customs, and less to choppers. There was one more piece to the puzzle: Matt acquired an older FXR that he customized, in the process appreciating how less weight coupled with quality suspension and premium brakes were prime ingredients for building custom Baggers. Toss in one more ingredient, and that’s horsepower, and you have the makings of a typical build today under that Spady’s Speed Shop banner.
Ray Willis fabricates many of his own components for the custom bikes and performance Baggers created at Spadafora Choppers/ Spady’s Speed Shop.

Willis and Centore describe their customs as performance Baggers because those big bikes have it all – engines with low-end torque coupled with proper passing power, hefty brakes to whoa the beasts at a moment’s notice, and suspension packages fit for a cross-country ride or a jubilant jaunt through the local canyon. Plus, they are strikingly good looking.

The two builders regularly turn to the FatBook for picking parts from Drag Specialties’ extensive vendor lineup. Things like S&S Cycle engines and engine hop-up kits, final-drive chain kits, Legend Suspensions and Russ Wernimont Design suspension upgrades, Race Tech fork kits, and whatever quality tire combination the customer settles on, are shopped from that big old catalog.
What Spady’s lacks in floor space it makes up for in efficiency. There’s a place for everything and a thing for every place.
Some of Spadafora’s own products are shopped by other builders from the FatBook, too. See, Willis’ fabricating skills led him to develop brackets for mounting hand guards onto Baggers, and now those brackets are part of PowerMadd’s own hand guard kits sold by Drag Specialties.
SPADY’S SPEED SHOP 64
Centore, with Willis’ blessing, has also given Spadafora a broader social media presence, and business has boomed such that the two men now schedule their customer projects on an appointment basis. Says Willis, “We don’t like to have people wait,” and the new policy has actually helped business grow because owners from other nearby New England states are scheduling their Baggers for performance conversions by the two. All of this growth hasn’t changed either of their perspectives, though. Like two anxious and inquisitive boys, they enjoy their time in the shop converting plain-Jane touring bikes into eye-popping Baggers. As Centore puts it, “Every single day we learn something new about Harleys,” and that newfound knowledge is recycled back into their customers’ bikes. Maybe those earlier days spent in the family’s auto parts recycling business had a lasting effect on Willis, and the same effect appears to be rubbing off on Centore, too.
You might recognize the stylish brackets on these hand guards – they’re manufactured specifically for PowerMadd by Willis and Cenotre.
The Beast from The East – this is the Spady’s performance Bagger that got so much attention at the 2018 NVP Meet & Greet/Bike Show. Centore and Willis shaved 140 pounds off the stock bike using carbon fiber pieces, and the turbo-charged Milwaukee-Eight 108 cranks out 150 horsepower. .
“We’re still a small shop, though,” Willis modestly notes, but even that’s beginning to change as people take notice. Witness the commotion at the 2018 NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI, when Spadafora Choppers showed up with a 2018 Road Glide Bagger seductively painted white and sporting all those performance goodies that Willis and Centore have mastered into their conversions.
All of that’s only fitting, because as Willis proudly says about his working relationship with Centore, “He’s like a son to me.” Who says that your job or vocation must be all work and no play? ■

Contrast and Quality
Modern Seats Built on Tradition
The Maverick HR builds on the success and comfort of the original Maverick seat. The deeply contoured design provides maximum for riders and passengers, while the new HR Inlay gives the seat a custom look.
L
ePera Motorcycle Seats is an interesting study in contrasts – modern materials and styling are blended with traditional, handcrafted seat construction. New, cutting edge seat styles are in the FatBook and OldBook, right next to their classic designs. Two new seats from LePera have a distinct contrast, too. The next-generation Maverick seat, the Maverick HR, is an ideal touring seat, while the TailWhip is designed to get the rider’s adrenaline pumping. Despite the differences in appearance and intended riding style, the two seats share a few traits. Both of them start with a steel base, which ensures a perfectly-contoured fit with the motorcycle. As with all current LePera seats, these new seats feature a steel base plate time-proven over LePera’s extensive history. Each one of these iconic plates is truly a work of art. From the beautiful yet tough-as-nails powder-coated surface to the natural dampening characteristics, the base plates are premium quality. All brackets are either MIG welded or held down by two grade-five Allen screws bolted into spot-welded weld nuts for a strong, precise fitment. To finish off these bad boys, each plate is carpeted, and a small portion of the base is always left uncarpeted to let you see all of the beauty of its construction. The Maverick HR and the TailWhip also feature LePera’s specially-poured and formulated high-density Mara-

thon molded foam, which gives each seat its distinctive shape and a high level of comfort. The foam is topped by a BikerTec custom cover for an extra dash of style and durability. The Maverick HR builds on the success and comfort of the original Maverick seat. The deeply contoured design provides maximum lower back support to make long rides more comfortable, while a tapered mid-section allows the rider to have an easy stance when at a standstill. The driver seating area is an ample 15-inches wide, and the passenger area is 13½-inches wide. The new HR Inlay gives the Maverick seat a custom look, with three choices to choose from. An HR1 white inlay with Double Diamond stitching is the most eye-catching because it contrasts with the seat’s smooth black finish. There is also an HR2 perforated black inlay with Double Diamond stitching and an HR3 black carbon fiber inlay. The TailWhip seat is definitely geared toward more adventurous riders, and it’s in the same family as the Kickflip. Both the TailWhip and the Kickflip are designed with contours that encourage non-traditional riding styles. The whipped-up tail of the TailWhip seat is versatile, either providing some extra support for the passenger or acting as a place to push one’s riding limits. The TailWhip is available in three finishes, including Basket Weave, Double Diamond and Pleats.

Tradition is an important aspect of LePera Motorcycle Seats, as is a dedication to producing quality, handcrafted seats. LePera’s founder came from the custom upholstery world where craftsmanship and attention to detail were at the core of everything he produced.
LePera’s new TailWhip is designed for more adventurous riders. That flipped up section on the back of the seat provides extra support for passengers, or serves as a platform to push one’s riding limits.
Like all LePera seats, the Maverick HR and the TailWhip are made in the USA at LePera’s base in North Hollywood, CA. The company was founded by Bob LePera, Sr. in 1972. Today, his children run the company. Son Bob LePera, Jr. has been the lead designer at LePera since the mid-1980s, while daughter Christine LePera handles management,
Some of the original designs by Bob Sr. are still being crafted as they were back in the ’70s, such as the Cherokee, Baron and the Signature Series. Even the methods for cutting, sewing and installing the material, almost all done by hand, is still done the same way. That obsession with tradition ensures that LePera seats continue to be examples of handcrafted quality. It might mean a little extra work goes into each seat, but for the team at LePera, it is worth it. ■

Primary Care
The ABCs of Replacement Belts
W
hen a primary drive belt needs replacement, BDL cautions that not all belts are the same. The differences aren’t immediately noticeable, but it’s critical that the new belt be an exact match to the pulleys on which it’ll run. First of all, an old belt worn on its edges is a dead giveaway that the pulleys are miss-aligned, toed-in, toed-out or tilted. The belt should track in the center of the engine pulley. Also, be sure the pulleys aren’t excessively worn and ensure that no chemicals have contaminated the belt. Oil, for example, can make the belt soft and stretchy. Correct those situations or the new belt won’t fare any better.
When replacing a drive belt, it’s critical that the new belt be an exact match to the pulleys on which it will run. BDL replacement belts come in a variety of sizes and dimensions, offering your customers a perfect fit for any application.
As to replacement belts, BDL cautions that just because a belt measures 2-inches wide and has a 132-tooth count, that’s no guarantee it’s the correct replacement for one with those same dimensions. Belts can vary, with tooth pitches of 8mm, 8.01mm, 8.3mm or more. And, tooth profiles can be rounded, tapered, or flat. For a belt to precisely engage into the pulleys everything must match. An HTD belt can’t be replaced with an RPP or HPPD belt.
BDL’s replacement belts offer that perfect match. The fitment of the pulleys and belt are exact. All BDL pulleys are gear-cut to within 0.005-inch, and the belts made to within 0.030-inch on the circumference with the correct pitch and profile. The techs at BDL also have some installation tips. The belt should be installed with its part number right side up and readable, not upside down. Not every belt is directional, but it’s good practice to assume it is and install the belt correctly. Optimum free-play for an installed belt is three-eights of an inch to three-quarter of an inch, and a bit more with wider 3-inch and 3½-inch belts. If a belt seems too tight or too loose, don’t assume that a different tooth count will be the solution. The dimension tolerance of a belt’s circumference can result in anywhere from a one-quarter of an inch and one-half of an inch difference in total up and down free-play.

★
OCTOBER 2019
In almost all cases, BDL says its replacement belt will mount with the correct free-play, but in those rare instances when it doesn’t the belt can be exchanged for one that’s slightly longer or shorter. Most importantly, though, remember that various manufacturers have different tooth pitches and profiles for their pulleys and belts. Mixing belts and pulleys between suppliers is an invitation to a mismatch. Use BDL belts on BDL pulleys. BDL does offer belts to fit other manufacturers belt drive pulleys and kits, except for imported pulleys with an STPD cut. ■

Rack Pack
Luggage Mounting Made Easy
L
uggage needs someplace to go on a motorcycle, and since 1994 Motherwell has manufactured luggage racks that blend quality, convenience and aesthetics to give riders a great perch for their bags. The new detachable Tour-Pak mounting rack is the latest mounting solution from Motherwell. The company also specializes in sissy bars, allowing riders to add some style and comfort to any ride. The detachable Tour-Pak mounting rack is, as the name says, perfect for mounting a Tour-Pak. The sturdy 12-gauge steel tubing comes in a finish of chrome, matte black or gloss black. The rack will support up to ten pounds, and it measures 10 inches x 11 inches. The rack is available in both a locking and non-locking version. The locking version features patent-pending locking push-button technology – just push a button to lock the luggage rack, and then turn a key to quickly unlock and remove it. The non-locking version requires just a quick pull on the built-in levers to release the rack. Motherwell ensures that no fingers or knuckles will be endangered in the process thanks to the rack’s design and easy operation.
Motherwell has manufactured strong, stylish luggage racks since 1994, and the newest product in the lineup is the detachable Tour-Pak mounting rack. It comes in a locking and a non-locking version.
While Motherwell racks support luggage, the company’s one-piece sissy bar will support a passenger’s back with a classic paperclip-style bar. Made from ¾-inch DOM steel tubing, the rack has a beefy profile that adds a dash of style. It is designed to complement both two-up and solo seats, and it bolts directly to the fender struts for simple installation. All of the necessary hardware is included to make mounting it even easier. The one-piece sissy bar is available in a chrome or gloss black finish, and the pad can be purchased separately. CEO Kelly Motherwell founded Motherwell with the aim of producing high-quality luggage racks for the motorcycle industry. The company is perhaps best known for its signature solo luggage racks, which define the brand’s goal of blending functionality
with style. The shape of the solo rack is designed to hug the curve of the fender. It is available in both 6-inch and 7-inch sizes, with the larger of the two perfectly suited to the contours of bigger fenders. Other parts available from Motherwell include a chrome-plated 2-up backrest luggage rack and a Maltese license plate frame. All of the products that Motherwell produces are made in the USA. ■

In addition to luggage racks, Motherwell also makes sissybars and a detachable backrest.

utting a fairing on a Harley-Davidson Dyna or Sportster is now a popular way to customize one of those bikes. Russ Wernimont Designs has been at the forefront of this trend and their brackets for putting a factory-original FXRT fairing onto a Dyna or FXR have given riders that sought-after club-style upgrade for a few years now. Those mounts, along with a windscreen and headlight cover (sold separately) are in the FatBook. As popular as those FXRT upgrades are, there are plenty of riders on the lookout for a slimmed-down, minimalist look. Still others want that sport-fairing profile, but with the option of running an audio head and a couple decently-sized speakers inside a smaller fairing. With its new Café and TXR fairings, Russ Wernimont Designs now has what those customers are looking for. The stripped clean and sporty Café, and the audio-ready, sport-styled TXR are now in the FatBook and more than a few riders will want to know about them both.

Magnum Shielding’s XR stainless brake lines offer a premium OE-style, direct fitment for easy, straight-forward installation.
XR brake line assemblies come in complete kits, and are a direct fitment for each and every application thanks to Magnum’s reputation as a Tier-1 supplier. These ABS and non-ABS kit assemblies incorporate OE routed tubing with brazed and polished fittings and manifolds as opposed to plumbed together JIC lines. Magnum’s XR stainless brake lines are available in either clear or black-coated stainless brake hose, chrome or blackchrome plated fittings, tube assemblies, and if applicable, manifolds. The PTFE brake hose is braided over with a heavy duty stainless steel reinforcement that’s embedded in a tough abrasion resistant outer jacket (clear nylon or jetblack nylon) for weatherability and durability. This enhanced
construction also provides an outstanding braking response due to its unusually low hose expansion properties. XR stainless brake lines are designed to be 100 percent compatible with Harley-Davidson ABS requirements for stock and alternative lengths, and are compliant with all DOT FMVSS-106 specifications. Magnum has stock and plus lengths to fit most ABS or non-ABS Harley-Davidson Dyna, Softail, Sportster and Touring models, including 2018 and up Softails. ■

FEULING VENTED DIPSTICKS Screws into the factory oil fill spout Removes unwanted buildup of blow by, which is found in engines with excessive leakdown through the rings/cylinders Vents excessive pressure from the oil tank through a breather system consisting of a filter element and umbrella valve Test results show a decrease in engine sump oil levels Two venting style options when installing the dipstick Option 1 is to use the1/8” NPT breather vent fitting with internal porous filter element (this option gives a clean look; however, it can produce an oil misting/ residue out of the element on engines with excessive leakdown/blow by) Option 2 is to use a quick-disconnect coupler fitting with rubber hose and filter element (this option will run any excessive oil misting/ residue through the line and into the filter element, but does require disconnecting the fitting in order to check the oil) For option 2, Feuling recommends routing the line up the frame rail, up under the seat/abs area then back down along the rightside frame rail and the filter element can fit cleanly between the engine/trans matting area on the inside of the lower right frame rail There are two ways to read the oil level with this dipstick: with the bike on the jiffy stand (FHS) or the bike upright and level (FHU) If reading the dipstick with the bike on the jiffy stand, you will take your reading from the dimples labeled FHS (Full Hot Stand) When reading the dipstick with the bike upright and level, you will take the reading from the dimples labeled FHU (Full Hot Upright) Made in the U.S.A.
