Thanks to my friends at Indian Motorcycle for the use of a new 2020 Roadmaster for the Drag Dealer Ride. Wonderful machine that seemed to do everything right that I needed. Great power and smooth handling for a touring bike, with lots of handy features like an easyto-navigate digital dashboard that shows what’s going on with the bike and where you are. FatBook catalog. Built by Curtis Hofmann of Hofmann Designs, this year’s cover bike is a great example of the category now being known as “Performance Baggers.” That would be a strong running motorcycle—a muscle bike, if you will—but with some saddlebags and long-distance amenities so you can just get on it and go wherever you want to go. Check out Hofmann’s machine starting on page 18, as well as a couple of other cool bikes in this issue.
s we get 2020 kicked off with this issue, we also wrap up 2019 with coverage of an event I participated in, the 14th annual Drag Specialties Dealer Ride. Every year, Drag comes up with a different location and this year’s event featured motorcycle riding in the great Southwest, based out of the El Conquistador resort in Tucson, Arizona. As usual, the format included a day at the hotel with the participating Drag vendors set up to show their products, answer questions and hand out samples and swag to the dealers on the ride. The next two days were all about riding, with routes one day north to Globe and Bisbee, and south to historic Tombstone the other day. I had a great time, of course. Hard to call covering an event like that work, but somebody had to do it! See my story starting on page 72.
Last but not least, starting on page 52 is a preview of the upcoming Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo, happening next month in Louisville, Kentucky. If you aren’t signed up yet for that event, it’s not too late. Check out our preview of the many great brands that will be showing all new products at the show and you’ll see why you need to be there.
While I covered the Drag ride, our editor Dennis Johnson followed a group of Drag sales reps over to Europe for a tour of the Michelin Tire facilities and some French tourist attractions. Their tour also included a stop at the Parts Europe headquarters in Trier, Germany. His story begins on page 34.
We hope to see you in Louisville, and also this fall on the 15th anniversary Drag Specialties Dealer Ride. We don’t have a location to announce yet, but we know it will be something extra-special to celebrate 15 years. It’s not too early to start talking to your Drag rep about how to qualify. ■
As we always do, this issue provides a look and background information of the motorcycle featured on the cover of the 2020 Drag Specialties

Parts Canada and Drag Specialties teamed up with Konquer Motorcycles to build this military-themed 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Bob. It will be auctioned off to raise funds for a veteran's foundation.
Honoring the Military FUNDRAISER FOR CANADIAN VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES
K
onquer Motorcycles of Kamloops, British Columbia hasn’t missed a thing in the custom build of a 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Bob. Designed around a theme that pays respect to the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, the bike will be auctioned off to raise funds and awareness for a military veteran’s foundation. Parts Canada and Drag Specialties have joined force with Konquer for these fundraising efforts. The goal is to support the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry Foundation (PPCLI) and the Heroes Hockey Challenge (HHC) by auctioning off the bike that’s been decked out in parts straight out of the FatBook.

The team at Konquer Motorcycles chose a select number of custom parts and accessories out of the FatBook to complete the build.
The auction takes place at the HHC’s annual gala event on March 6, 2020 with all funds going to the PPCLI. Money will also be raised at the Heroes Hockey Challenge Game on March 8th at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Parts Canada is sending the custom Fat Bob on tour across Canada to five consumer motorcycle shows, starting in January in Toronto, heading to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver and then ending the show tour in Montreal at the end of February. The bike will be on display in Parts Canada’s inaugural Drag Specialties corporate booth at each of the shows. Representatives from Konquer Motorcycles, PPCLI, HHC and Canadian Veterans will on hand to bring awareness to the cause.

With a focus on “the soldier, the wounded, the fallen and their families,” the PPCLI Foundation has raised more than $2 million for programs supporting active duty soldiers, veterans, and their families. The foundation was founded in 2011 as part of the PPCLI, which has served Canadians with honour and distinction for more than 100 years, ensuring the legacy of our proud military history lives on in future generations. The Heroes Hockey Challenge is a charitable foundation that raises funds in Canada for those who serve and have served in the Canadian military – this includes active members and their families, veterans, the wounded and the fallen. Bringing together many former NHL and other sports celebrities to various alumni games and events, the HHC has raised more than $350,000 for the cause since 2012. ■

2020 FATBOOK COVER BIKE
A longtime fan of the FatBook, Curtis Hofmann made judicious use of the catalog to build a Bagger worthy of appearing on its cover.
T
he 2020 FatBook is here and the cover bike is a stunner. As always that giant catalog is chock-full of everything it takes to transform a Harley-Davidson, this year more so than ever, and Curtis Hofmann of Hofmann Designs in Buffalo, Minnesota made spectacular use of it all. Pulling custom parts and accessories from just about every section of that new 2020 Drag Specialties catalog this up-and-coming builder took a stock 2019 FLHT Standard model Harley and turned it into something that’s anything but standard. Of course, that’s no surprise there. A FatBook Cover Bike is supposed to show off what’s possible with what the aftermarket has to offer. And given free rein to do exactly that – a situation any one of us would love to find ourselves in – Hofmann made the most of it, with carefully planned restraint. The hallmark of any Hofmann Designs build is coherent custom style coupled with reliable, useable performance.

The goal is always a complete, well-rounded motorcycle. A Hofmann Designs build will not only look great, it’ll be a usable, everyday/all-situations-comfortable bike. Everything on that FatBook parts list Curtis settled on was not only chosen for the all-around performance those parts would add, but also for the custom look they would bring. Along with the lightweight and gold-anodized Performance Machine Pro-Am wheels with matching rotors, there are superperforming MJK radial-mount brake calipers and Pirelli Night Dragon tires. THE 2020 FATBOOK COVER BIKE YEAR OF THE PERFORMANCE BAGGER
With parts picked from throughout the new FatBook, Curtis Hofmann of Hofmann Designs put together a 2020 cover bike that screams Performance Bagger. That aggressive stance comes courtesy of a host of parts, including THRASHIN Supply handlebars, Trask risers, Pirelli Night Dragon tires, and gold anodized Pro-Am wheels by Performance Machine.

CUSTOMIZED BY HOFMANN DESIGNS / BUFFALO, MINNESOTA
2019 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLHT STANDARD A black-and-red graphic scheme by Finishline Custom Paint in Corcoran, Minnesota contrasts with the gold-anodized accent of the Pro-Am wheels, THRASHIN Supply mid-bend handlebars, the rear sprocket, EK chain and various mounts throughout, resulting in a finished look that is purposefully stunning. Clearly, this is an FLHT Standard built for miles of fun with little doubt about its ability to deliver. Hofmann’s build style is what first caught the eye of everyone at Drag Specialties. It’s what led to his being tapped for the construction of the 2020 FatBook cover bike. And, it looks like that admiration was a two-way street. “The FatBook has always been my go-to catalog for whatever bike I’m customizing,” he says. “There’s a lot in it.” This year more than ever, with a Hofmann Designs custom on the cover leading the way. ■

SEATS
Saddle Swap
Fit, Finish and Custom Seat Options most Harley-Davidson bars. The Predator is available with a solar-reflective leather finish in the seating area. While it looks like ordinary black leather, the solar-reflective leather is created through a patented process that reduces the surface temperature by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. That resistance to heat makes the seat much more comfortable for a rider – especially after the bike has been sitting out in the hot sun – and helps extend the life of the seat compared to conventional leather or vinyl.
EZ-On solo seat in Scorpion Stitch pattern
O
ne of the easiest but most striking ways a rider can change the look of a motorcycle is with a new seat. Drag Specialties Seats are designed to offer style, comfort and durability, all while giving customers plenty of options. A lot of the seat styles available from Drag Specialties Seats have fitments through 2020 models, so there are choices for everything from vintage bikes to the newest Harley-Davidsons. Among the popular styles that have recently expanded to fit the latest models are the Predator, Predator III and EZ-On solo seats.
The more aggressive-looking Predator III seat features a 7-inch tall driver back support that combines unique styling and comfort. The seat narrows at the front for better leg clearance, too. The Predator III is finished with a high-quality automotive-grade vinyl cover that is available in a smooth or double diamond stitch. The stitched version offers choices of black, silver or red stitching. Like the Predator, the Predator III works with all Drag and most Harley sissy bars. The EZ-On solo seat is exactly as advertised – a seat that easily mounts and doesn’t even require tools. Instead, an internal rubber mount/stud system allows for quick installation and removal. The solo seat features a deep seating area combined with a narrow front for maximum comfort. The seat is also available with solar-reflective leather in the seating area.
All three of these seats start with a 3/16-inch ABS thermoformed base that provides a perfect fit. A carpeted bottom and rubber bumpers underneath decrease vibration and protect the bike’s paint. On top of the base, a molded polyurethane foam gives each seat style its distinct shape while providing a comfortable ride. Each seat comes packaged with the necessary mounting hardware. Like every Drag Specialties seat, they are handmade in the USA at the company’s headquarters in Rogers, Minnesota. The Predator seat sits 1-inch lower than stock (unless otherwise noted) and is compatible with all Drag sissy bars, plus Predator in smooth solar-reflective leather
Customers who want even more choices than the ones in the FatBook and OldBook can create their own look with the Drag Specialties Custom Seat Order Program. Designed to be affordable and easy, most Drag Specialties seats can be customized with choices of eight stitch patterns, eight thread colors and 17 seat covering options. ■

EXHAUST SYSTEMS
Short and Sporty
New 2-into-1 for Twin Cam Bikes system is designed to add a sporty look and feel, with plenty of power, for Twin Cam Harley-Davidson Touring bikes dating back to 1995. These Road Rage short 2-into-1 exhausts for the Twin Cam bikes are a great pick for any saddlebagsport role. First introduced for the Touring-model Milwaukee-Eights, the pipe is now offered for all those earlier-model Harley Touring bikes. These pipes are sporty and they’re short 2-into-1s that feature a 4-inch megaphone-style muffler that terminates at the front of the rear wheel, well before the saddlebag.
The new short 2-into-1s for Harley-Davidson Touring models offer an abrupt, sporty look, and the horsepower and torque boost that your customers expect from Bassani.
It’s a no-nonsense sport/performance look, and its integral design, a onepiece header and muffler system, allows an easy installation. Choices include a Chrome (p/n 1800-2471) or Black (p/n 1800-2472) finish or a completely TIG-welded stainless steel system (p/n 1800-2473). The pipes feature that super-scavenging 2-into-1 horsepower-and-torque boost riders expect from Bassani. The head pipes are tuned for length and they’re stepped, 1¾-inches opening up to 17/8-inches. There’s also a Bassani performance-design collector as well as a spiral-core louvered removable baffle inside the muffler and that unmistakable Bassani 2-into-1 sound.
B
assani Xhaust has a long and storied history of building exhaust systems that really pack a punch, both in performance and in styling. It’s been this way since Darryl Bassani started designing and making motorcycle pipes back in 1969. For its latest creation, the exhaust experts at Bassani have taken aim at the growing trend of building Baggers with a performance edge. The new short Road Rage 2-into-1
The pipes come with 18mm O2 bungs and 12mm adapters, full length heat shields and the whole system fits high and tight on the bike for a clean, integrated look with lots of ground clearance. It all ends with a new Slash Cut billet end cap. There are plenty of those Twin Cam Baggers still out on the road, and all of them are prime candidates for an exhaust upgrade from Bassani, especially with this new short Road Rage 2-into-1 system. ■

Stainless True-Duals
Classic Style, Modern Performance this stainless-steel system is a real enhancement to a Milwaukee-Eight Touring bike, the gleam of that stainless-steel is able to work with and augment any color. The style and the sweep of these pipes and mufflers is a treat to the eye, too. The system’s fit is clean and it’s smooth. Everything neatly blends into the lines of a Milwaukee-Eight bagger while still showcasing all that stainless steel. The performance boost that the system provides is pure Bassani.
H
arley-Davidson Touring bikes cut a very classic figure. From the tip of the fender to the back of saddlebags, that silhouette is as familiar as it is stylish, and any custom upgrades need to maintain that well defined look.
Bassani’s stainless steel True Duals for the Milwaukee-Eight Bagger range are designed to provide a classic, twin-pipe look and a healthy kick of power.
The stainless-steel True Duals are freeflowing and are stepped – 1¾-inches to 17/8-inches – for a noticeable increase in both horsepower and torque. The systems include 18mm O2 bungs to allow for the installation of wideband sensors for custom tuning, with 12mm adapters also supplied.
When it comes to improving the free-flowing performance of that bike, Bassani Xhaust has just what’s needed, its new stainless steel True Duals system for 2017 and newer Milwaukee-Eight powered Baggers. Long, low and sleek, the True Duals maintain the familiar lines of those bikes, while adding a boost in performance and styling. To make the stainless True Duals, Bassani started from scratch. A completely new design, the system features headers, cross-over pipe, a pair of 4-inch straight can mufflers featuring Bassani-design louvered baffles, full heat shields and taper-design end caps. Designed for riders wanting a classic, twin-pipe look, this Bassani system has that and then some. The look of
Your customers on those M8 Touring bikes can’t go wrong with a set of True Duals, and that stainless steel construction provides a nice, updated look to a design that’s as classic as the motorcycles on which they’re installed. ■

LED LIGHTING
Better and Brighter
Redesigned LED Lighting Components
The ProBEAM Bullet Ringz rear turns signals have been re-designed for even brighter LED output. They feature eight red running light LEDs in the outer bezel, and 12 more red LEDs in the center of the housing.

eing visible to other traffic is vital for a motorcycle, especially at night. Custom Dynamics created the ProBEAM line of LED lighting components to make sure a bike stands out from any angle.
However, the designers at Custom Dynamics decided that brighter is always better. Three popular products, including the Road Glide Turn Signals, Dynamic Strips and Bullet Ringz, have been redesigned with highquality ProBEAM components that provide an even brighter output than before. The ProBEAM Road Glide LED Turn Signals will fit all 2015 to current Harley-Davidson Road Glide models. Inside the gloss black or chrome aluminum housing, four white daytime running lights, and six full-contrast amber LEDs shine behind a smoked lens. The white LEDs de-activate during the amber turn signal for better contrast. The ProBEAM Road Glide LED Turn Signals are a direct plugand-play replacement for the stock front bullet turn signals, offering an instant style update to the look of the bike’s front end.
Street Glide and FLHT riders can crank up the visibility and style of their 2006 to current bike with ProBEAM Dynamic Strips. The sleek billet housings provide both a daytime running light and a full-contrast amber LED turn signal behind a smoked lens. The white running lights automatically turn off when the amber lights are activated to indicate a turn or a hazard warning, which makes the amber color even more visible to other traffic on the road. Available with a chrome, black or contrast finish, the ProBEAM Dynamic Strips are a simple plug-and-play upgrade for Street Glide and FLHT models with passing lamps removed. Custom Dynamics has both front and rear designs for the ProBEAM Bullet Ringz LED Turn Signals. The signals are available in a chrome or gloss black housing and feature plug-and-play installation. The front signals come with a smoked lens while the rear signals have the choice of smoked or red. The ProBEAM Bullet Ringz LED front turn signals are available in two fitments – one for Harley models with an 1157 pigtail connector and a bullet-style lens, plus one for 2016 to 2020 CVO models that utilize a JAE connector. Eight bright white LEDs are embedded into the outer aluminum bezel, while 12 amber LEDs in the center act as the turn signal. Advanced reflector technology helps boost the brightness, and a wider viewing angle enhances visibility. The white LEDs deactivate when the amber ones turn on for better contrast. The ProBEAM Bullet Ringz LED rear turn signals fit Harley models with an 1157 pigtail connector and a bullet-style lens. These OEM direct-replacement signals have eight red running-light LEDs embedded on the outer bezel. In the center of the housing, 12 red LEDs function as a highintensity turn signal and brake light. All of these updated products are DOT/SAE compliant and are backed by the Custom Dynamics Lifetime LED Warranty. ■

Rodney’s Cycle House
Adapt, Change, Survive and Thrive
Rodney Roberts has had his hands on motorcycle handlebars for most of his life. In 2020 the Arkansas shop owner celebrates his 50th year of doing business in Little Rock, and through it all his loyalty to customers and industry insiders has been paramount to his business model.
W
ho would have thought that a small chopper shop tucked deep into Arkansas could remain in business for five years, let alone half a century? Certainly not a local television news reporter who, in 1975, interviewed chopper builder Rodney Roberts, owner of Rodney’s Cycle House in Little Rock, AR. As the reporter wound down his TV interview that highlighted the shop’s fifth anniversary, he asked Roberts: “When the chopper fad subsides, do you think you can remain in business?” To which the young and ambitious Roberts confidently replied, “I’ll just try to keep up with the fads. I’ve got enough parts inventory that I can manage the service work, no problem.” That telltale moment pretty much explains why Rodney’s Cycle House celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Because through the years whenever a situation called for it, the shop successfully shifted its marketing strategies to match with prevailing trends, in the process keeping the doors open and the cash flowing. “Adaptation is the key” says Rodney today. “When I went into business all I wanted to do was build custom motorcycles. But I soon realized that Arkansas is a small market for just doing that, so we began to do performance work

– engines and stuff like that – to expand our market. Plus, me being a machinist, we did most of our own machine work to the engines we built.” And the business grew – and grew, and grew until several years ago Rodney’s Cycle House easily could have changed its name to Rodney’s Cycle Castle. See, in 2014 he left the old house that he had converted to a bike shop in 1970, moving into an 18,000-square-foot facility that consumes 3½ acres on the fringe of Arkansas’ capital city, Little Rock.

DEALER PROFILE
Title
Each year the shop’s Toys For Tots run fills multiple 18-wheelers with toys. The 2019 event also collected $4,500 cash that was presented to the Fraternal Order of Police to purchase bicycles for children.
As Jon Olson, Rodney’s Drag Specialties sales rep of nearly 10 years, describes Rodney’s Cycle House today: “The place is unique in that it’s very large,” adding that, over the years, Rodney himself has mastered the art of maintaining an inventory that’s pertinent to the shop’s daily clientele. “His point-of-sales system is very efficient, so there’s always product on hand,” Olson adds. Rodney’s initial brush with the point-of-sales concept has its roots in 1971 when he signed on to be a Drag Specialties dealer. About 20 years later Rodney instituted a POS program created by racer and Harley-Davidson dealer Vance Breese into his shop’s inventory control methods to further streamline his operation. Over the years, with each subsequent improvement to the business, he’s managed to make his in-house point of sales system work more effectively than before. But adapting to change, stresses Rodney, is only half the battle for a custom bike shop to succeed. It helps to maintain good relationships within the industry, too. That begins with the shop’s employees. Despite its size, Rodney’s Cycle House relies on just five people to get the job done. Rodney is joined by Terry Tramel at the parts counter, the father-and-son combo of Darrell and Wayne Hopson work in a service shop that includes a Dyno Jet 250 dynamometer, and there’s the do-it-all person in the office, Donna Fulgham who, according to Rodney, is “the kind of person you need; people bond with her quickly.” “I tell my employees, ‘Paychecks walk through the [shop’s] front door,’” explains Rodney, meaning that if you give good service, provide quality products and treat each individual with respect, business will grow.

It’s always a community effort when Rodney’s Cycle House promotes an event! One guest who attended one of Rodney’s biker hoedowns was none other than Miss Arkansas’ Outstanding Teen 2019 Sarah Cate Lay.
That concept has been the shop’s business model for the past 50 years, the rewards being a loyal and growing customer base. In fact, some of that customer loyalty manifests itself in the various charities that the shop and its clientele support.

Expect to see stock or custom Harley-Davidsons of any and all vintage in the service shop that’s run by Darrell and Wayne Hopson. A spacious and orderly parts and accessories showroom turns into controlled chaos during major events like weekly Bike Nights and the annual Toys For Tots gathering.
Keeping Politics Local, And Motorcycling Safe
For example, over the past 35 years the Arkansas-based shop has supported the seasonal Toys for Tots drive. – the 2018 drive netted eighteen 18-wheeler trailers filled with toys for needy children. Various other charities and benefits highlight the shop’s calendar, too, but you get the picture. It’s not all serious business, though, and each year the shop promotes a swap meet for local bikers to sell their discarded items. When Arkansas’ seasonal weather turns warm, Thursday nights are set aside for a weekly Bike Night. There’s even an on-site roadhouse called Rodney’s Handlebar and Grill. While Rodney did close the doors on the restaurant earlier in 2019 after realizing that the food business and the motorcycle business are completely different, his daughterin-law has subleased it from him with the intent of restoring the food service business. Plans are to sell food, beverages and snacks during Bike Nights and offer customers a place to hang out while their bikes are being serviced. It’s all part of the adaptation concept that Rodney realized so many years ago for maintaining business growth. You can bet, too, that Drag Specialties will remain an integral part of the products that Rodney’s Cycle House provides for its customers. “Service and service parts are what fuels our business today,” Rodney explains. “We try to gear our business to our surroundings, and the FatBook and OldBook help us do exactly that by providing the right products at the right time.” It’s just business as usual at Rodney’s Cycle House in Little Rock, Arkansas. ■

FEBRUARY 2020
There’s an old saying that “all politics are local,” and if that’s true then Rodney Roberts is right at home in his elements. Arkansas’s state capitol building is but a stone’s throw from Rodney’s Cycle House, making it convenient for him to dabble in local politics, too. And dabble in local politics is exactly what Rodney has done ever since he and several other concerned motorcycle owners felt that the state’s mandatory helmet law needed addressing. To that end, in 1984, he and other people formed ‘Abate of Arkansas’, an association that helped repeal the state’s helmet law, plus make motorists and the state’s transportation department better aware of motorcycle safety. “I guess I’ve always been somewhat of a rebel,” admits Rodney. He could add that he also is somewhat of a fixer. And changing the state’s helmet law, not to mention making adjustments to various other penal codes that affect motorcycle safety, became part of Rodney’s calling for the past 30 or so years. Indeed, Rodney became such a fixture within the state’s legislative system that many lawmakers and administrative officials began recognizing him for his work. In fact, once when then-governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton spotted Rodney in the Capitol’s hallway, the governor took time to chat with the biker activist about the progress of specific motorcycle-related legislation. Years later another of the state’s governors, Mike Huckabee, referred to Rodney for counsel, and various other legislators also have deferred to him at times. Rodney has had such an impact on motorcycle legislation that the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum presented him with its Freedom Fighters award in 2012. Other highlights included haute cuisine prepared by chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants, an overnight stay in an elaborate 16th century chateau near Bordeaux, and a visit to the picturesque seaside city of San Sebastian, Spain. The latter stop included a visit to Michelin’s factory in nearby Lasarte for a detailed tour of the tire manufacturing process from start to finish.

into MotoGP, with Freddie Spencer claiming the 1983 Championship on a Michelin radial rear tire. It was almost an overwhelming wealth of information.
Starting in Paris, the journey carried on to Clermont-Ferrand, where attendees got their first look at Michelin’s presence in this city in the Avergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France.
“It was very interesting to see the first tires all the way up to the Concorde and Space Shuttle tires,” said Greg ‘Gunny’ Stilwell, the dual Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited regional sales manager for the Central region. “The biggest takeaway I got there was how they didn’t necessarily look for a need and then fill it. They actually created the need, and then filled it. Making some of the earliest road maps and getting roads named enabled people to drive or ride further, which created a higher demand for tires in general.”
A major attraction here is l’Aventure Michelin, the company’s on-site museum that details its origins, dating back to its development of the first detachable bicycle tire. It continues on through to the birth of Bibendum (AKA the Michelin Man), the launch of the influential red Michelin restaurant guides, the publication of its first road maps, its efforts to lobby the French government for the first road signs, and the development of the first radial tires. The group received the complete overview of company xxxxxxxxxx
history leading up to the development of its first earthmover tires and aircraft tires. Then came Michelin’s early forays into racing including Formula 1 and then its leap

The group then transitioned away from Michelin history and toward its future with a trip to the Michelin Technology Center in Ladoux, the company’s R&D center and home to its specialized tire proving grounds. Here the reps got a detailed look at Michelin’s focus on innovation, a main element of the company’s DNA since its inception.

At the Ladoux proving ground, the group saw demonstrations of Michelin tire performance in a high-speed handling situation and in two-wheel wet braking distance. Both were impressive examples how those tires really perform. Photos by Michelin
A tour highlighted how these technological innovations are ‘cross pollinated’ across market segments and tire categories. For example, tire sipes developed for truck and auto tires, are now integrated into Michelin’s Road 5 motorcycle tire. One exciting display showed a future concept where consumers may one day be able to mount 3D printed car tires can be adapted with new tread patterns to match the road conditions or terrain of a specific day of driving. According to Scot Clark, Two-Wheel Marketing Manager for Michelin North America, this is all evidence of the company’s history as a premium tire manufacturer that has a rich history of creative innovation and a culture of delivering high quality products that help improve the “mobility experience.” Even more so, the company does so on a massive worldwide scale and backed who are xxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxx xxxis xxxxxxx xxxxby xxxemployees xxxxxxx xxxx xxx proud to contribute to the success of the organization. xxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxx xxx Luckily, the group was at the right place to see all of this technology in action. For one special demonstration, the group was split into smaller parties, each bundled into two chase cars that then followed a Michelin test rider as he demonstrated high-speed handling of Michelin’s motorcycle tires on a sport-touring bike. With the chase cars following closely at speeds of up to 130 mph on a straight away, the test demonstrated the stability of the tires by jerking the handlebars back and forth. With everyone’s adrenaline pumping, the tour bid goodbye to the Ladoux facility and hit the road, bound for Michelin’s tire manufacturing factory in Lasarte, Spain. Getting the opportunity to view the tire manufacturing process at the Lasarte facility was certainly eye-opening. This factory is where the majority of Michelin’s radial motorcycle tires are produced, a lineup that includes the Road and Power lines, as well as the new Commander III Cruiser tire and the Scorcher 11 tires. While most of the process is automated, it was amazing how much still requires the xxxxxxxxxx human touch. After the Lasarte factory tour concluded, it was back to San Sebastian for the night where, as you might expect, the accommodations in Spain were top notch, as the was the food. Everyone in the group was given an ocean-facing room at the hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, and the large meal of tapas that night had to be seen to be believed. The group rolled out early the next morning north to the small coastal town of Biarritz, France where a Michelinchartered jet was waiting to take the now seasoned travelers on their final leg of the journey – a flight to Luxembourg, the nearest airport over the border from Parts Europe’s headquarters in Trier, Germany.

The two recounted the origins and history of the company that celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019. This was followed by a guided tour of Parts Europe’s expansive high-tech distribution center. Additionally, the trip offered the group an eye-opening look into Michelin’s history and culture of innovation. Just as its done since those first removable bicycle tires and since the ground-breaking development of radial tires, Michelin is always thinking a step ahead, not only meeting today’s demands, but working hard to create more reasons to enjoy and use its high-quality, highperformance products. “For any rep that hasn’t been on this kind of trip, you owe it to yourself to earn one,” said ‘Gunny’ Stilwell. “Not xxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxx xxx only will you be providing a great service to your dealers xxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxx xxx when you sell them such a quality tire, you’ll go on the trip of a lifetime!” ■

Torquer 450 Slip-Ons
Improving the Milwaukee-Eight Exhaust Tone
Vance & Hines’ Torquer 450 slip-ons were engineered specifically for Milwaukee-Eight Touring bikes. These slip-ons return that deep and throaty sound to the M8 engine, and do it with the stock head pipes. A newly designed end-cap completes the look.
I
t seems that a lot of customers with Milwaukee-Eight Touring bikes were missing something when it came to the exhaust note of those popular bikes. Turns out Vance & Hines has just what’s needed to remedy that situation, the new Torquer 450 slip-ons. These are the first Vance & Hines slip-ons designed specifically for the M8 Touring models. The Torquer 450s feature 4½-inch cans and they not only deliver a nice power boost, they also bring back that deep, bold and throaty Harley-Davidson sound to the M8 Touring bikes. They are available in Chrome or Black. This all came about from company co-founder, Terry Vance. “Every year me and my buddies head out to Sturgis to do some riding and check out the racing and it’s a lot of fun. But everywhere I went, I kept hearing guys, especially with the M8s, all wanting the same thing – a 4½-inch can with a bigger sound and some more power. That really got me thinking, so when I got back to the shop, I challenged the Engineering Team to totally reinvent the 4½-inch class we started with [the OS450].” And, with the new Torquer 450s, they delivered.
Not only do they deliver power, style and performance, they’re also available at a wallet-friendly price. The Torquer 450s retail at $599.99 for the pair in Chrome and $649.99 in Black. That’s less than any other 4½-inch slip-ons Vance & Hines has for the Milwaukee-Eight Touring-model segment.

A big concern voiced by many M8 riders was that they just couldn’t hear their exhaust. An inherently quiet engine by design, the M8 just doesn’t have that deep, rich tonality riders are used to. Torquer 450s were designed specifically to change that. Performance and sonically engineered specifically for the Milwaukee-Eight, these slip-ons return that deep and throaty sound to the M8 engine, and do it with the stock head pipes. They sound great, feature a new end-cap designs and are big and bold. The Black versions even feature riveted badges with a brand-new, cool-looking Vance & Hines logo. There’s Vance & Hines performance here, too. Plenty of it. Besides making sure the pipes provide the sound riders want for an M8, the exhaust engineers at Vance & Hines also made sure they performed. Made in the USA, the new Torquer 450 delivers more horsepower and torque than any other Vance & Hines slip-on in the M8 category.
VANCE &HINES
Thanks to a new, patent-pending LS-275 louvered baffle, the Torquer 450 slip-ons deliver horsepower and torque gains (as well as a throaty exhaust note) for Milwaukee-Eight Touring bikes.
Vance & Hines has a couple dealer-display setups available to showcase the new Torquer 450 and put it out where riders can see it and you can tell them all about it. There are countertop and slatwall displays that are both good-looking additions to any shop or showroom. The displays are free with a minimum order of the Torquer 450 slip-ons. The countertop displays are durable powder-coated steel structures with rubber-coated cradles, and feature highly visible Vance & Hines branding with interchangeable magnetic signage highlighting key Torquer 450 features. The universal slatwall brackets are able to display not only the Torquer 450 but any Vance & Hines Touring slip-on or full system for Dynas, Softails or Sportsters. ■
» Talk with your Drag rep for more details about the new
Torquer 450s and the display program, and get further information at www.vanceandhines.com.
Much of that is due to the new patent-pending LS-275 louvered baffles inside the Torquer 450. More than just delivering that deep and throaty tone, the baffles are free-flowing for the kind of power boost a rider can feel. There’s an optional quiet baffle available that maintains the deep, throaty tone these slip-ons offer, but dials down the decibel level just a bit. While the new Torquer 450 slip-ons are built to work with the OE head pipes to give riders a power boost, they perform even better when paired with a set of Vance & Hines Power Duals. Another addition that can up the performance ante would be bolting on a free-flowing air intake. The Vance & Hines VO2 Naked or the new Rogue are great choices for letting that M8 motor breathe. Of course, dialing everything in for optimum performance is easy with Vance & Hines’ Fuelpak FP3 tuning system.
The Black version of the Torquer 450 features a riveted badge carrying a slick-looking new Vance & Hines logo.

otorcycle cables get replaced for lots of different reasons. First, of course, there’s the simple mechanical need. OE cables on a Harley-Davidson might get stretched and sloppy, stiff and sticking or just plain unraveling and ready to let go. Less imminent, but no less important, is the need for cables of a different length or look. Whether to match the height of new handlebars or change the appearance from the OE casings, custom bikes often require custom cables. For either instance, Barnett has what your customers need. Today’s applications cover nearly every Harley-Davidson from the earliest years right up through the latest 2020 models. The lineup even includes replacements for the factory self-adjust cables, new cables featuring a traditional, midway adjuster. There are cables for nearly all the Victory motorcycles, too. They’re offered in lengths of 8-inches, 12-inches, 15-inches and 20-inches, and the 20-inch version comes with a bare bottom end for easy routing through sharp handlebar bends. Importantly, all of these cables are an upgrade over the stock setup. All the cable assemblies, the fittings and the hardware are made and assembled in-house by Barnett, in the USA. All the 1987 and later Harley-Davidson and all Victory application clutch cables come standard with Barnett’s High Efficiency nylon-coated and silicone-lubed inner wire for an extremely smooth pull and reduced lever effort. Long Lay (longitudinally wound) casings and 1x19, 7x19, and 7x7 stainless steel wire rope eliminate cable flex or stretch. To further ensure durability and smooth performance Barnett cable housings are lined with Teflon, nylon, or HDPE. For more than 70 years Barnett has supplied riders with the quality, USA-made upgrade cables they need. Whether it’s a factory-look cable to replace a failing OEM unit or a custom-sized, custom-look cable Barnett has had it, and still has it today in a lineup including those late-model “plug & play” throttle-by-wire extensions. ■

ag lids are great for keeping a rider’s luggage dry and secure, but they are also a great spot to mount additional speakers to give a Bagger’s audio system a big (and loud) upgrade. KICKER offers its bag lid kits either ready to rock or ready to be paired with speakers. The bag lid kits are made specifically for 2014 and newer Harley-Davidson Baggers. Both versions – with and without the speakers built in – arrive with a smooth black primer coat. The quality finish means it can be mounted and used immediately, or it can be the base layer for a custom paint job. KICKER packages each pair of bag lids with the necessary gaskets, grilles and mounting screws to take all the guesswork out of upgrading from a standard bag lid to one that becomes an audio component. To make it even easier, the bag lids work with the stock locking mechanism, so nothing else on the saddlebags needs to be modified or replaced. The KICKER loaded bag lid kit (p/n 4405-0589) is the complete package, because each lid is fitted with a weatherproof KICKER PS69 Powersports Coaxial Speaker with pre-measured and terminated speaker harnesses. A weather-proof seal around the speakers makes sure that moisture doesn’t seep into the saddlebags.
KICKER’s lineup of bag lid speaker kits are made specifically for 2014 and newer Harley-Davidson Baggers. The speakers provide excellent sound quality, even with road and wind noise.
KICKER bag lids are engineered inhouse at the company’s headquarters in Stillwater, OK. The brand has grown a lot since its inception as a twoman operation working out of a garage in 1973, but the company still focuses on precision manufacturing with a personal connection. The KICKER PS line of speakers wasn’t just designed for powersports – it was also designed by riders and powersports enthusiasts. NAMZ Turns 20
Two Decades of Excellence

n an industry that’s constantly changing, at a time when the service need is on the rise for brand-new bikes and for bikes just a few years old or a few decades old, NAMZ is there with a big lineup of hardto-find electrical essentials. It’s been that way since 1999 when NAMZ first opened its doors. From the full or partial wiring harnesses to keep those wheels rolling, to all the OE-replacement or specialty modules to complete custom projects NAMZ has it. Now celebrating 20 years in business, NAMZ continues to meet the needs of riders and shops everywhere. NAMZ was founded in 1999 to provide quality electrical products at an affordable price, and in 2012 purchased Badlands with an eye on expanding its scope. The company continues to grow today and is constantly adding new, in-demand parts, harnesses and modules, all produced in-house. Flip open the FatBook, the OldBook and the 2019 Indian catalog and you’ll find a big range of those products. The company is also committed to a high level of dealer support and customer service and has expanded its staff to offer great assistance. The current popularity of late-model Evos and early-year Twin Cams has opened up a real need for the kind of electrical assistance available at NAMZ/Badlands. In addition to all the components and systems for those two platforms – including the ever-popular and best-selling Complete Bike Harness Kits – NAMZ also has what is needed for all the later-model bikes, too.

CAMCHEST KITS
Serious, Reliable Power
Big Boost for Milwaukee-Eight Bikes feature screens and magnets to help keep debris away from critical parts. S&S Cycle’s proprietary Quickee pushrods are designed to be both installed and removed easily, and permit a trouble-free installation that does not require removal of heads, rocker assemblies or rocker box cover. So, once installed, how do these camchest kits stack up to the stock performance of those big Milwaukee-Eight motors? Just like you’d imagine coming from a company like S&S Cycle. Their 475 camchest kit easily pulls 100 horsepower out of the 107-inch bikes and their 550 kit will see 128 horsepower, and an insane 146 ft. lbs. of torque when combined with a big bore kit. Naturally S&S recommends pairing its camchest kits with the Sidewinder big bore kits, high-flow exhaust and proven Stealth intake systems.
S&S Cycle has added its monster 550 cam to its broad lineup of complete camchest kits. The set-up is designed for offering a performance boost for Harley-Davidson models with 114-inch and larger Milwaukee-Eight engines.

For anyone riding those big, 107-inch, 114-inch and 117inch Milwaukee-Eight powered bikes, S&S Cycle has a little something-something to put a whole lot of pep into their already powerful step. In addition, the “Proven Performance” company has now added its monster 550 cam to its extensive collection of complete camchest kits. That 550 cam is designed specifically for big-bore applications and, when combined with those all-inclusive kits, it packs decades of go-fast engineering into Harley-Davidson’s biggest-inch motors for the Touring and Softail lineup. There are S&S 550 cam options for both oil-cooled and water-cooled M8s. So, what’s in the box? Everything your customers need to let their bikes make some serious and reliable power. The parts list includes cam, outer drive gears for gear drive kits, cam plate, tappets, tappet cuffs, high-flow oil pump, Quickee pushrod kit, heavy-duty valve springs (in the 550 version), and all the bearings and gaskets necessary for installation. All those parts are designed to work as a package to create optimum power for 2017 through 2020 107-inch, 114-inch and larger Milwaukee-Eight powered Big Twins. For example, those new highflow oil pumps provide a 58 percent increase in scavenge when paired with a chain or gear drive cam and pushrod tubes. The high-flow pumps also

Saddle Showcase
Hands-on With the Saddlemen Seat Center
D
ealers at the Louisville NVP will get the chance to see what their showroom can look like when they stop by the Saddlemen Seat Center at the Saddlemen booth. Designed to give customers a hands-on experience with its V-twin seats and Gel-Core Technology, the Saddlemen Seat Center is a premium display that showcases five seats. The team at Saddlemen knows that choosing a new motorcycle seat is about so much more than just looks or price. It’s also about the comfort level, craftsmanship, and materials. You can’t sell comfort from a picture. The Saddlemen Seat Center is an interactive display that allows customers to see, touch, and actually hold Saddlemen seats. They can even demo one of them on their own bikes. The Saddlemen Seat Center is designed to quickly show a customer what a seat can look like on their bike. The seats remove easily from the display, and most seat models require only one screw for mounting. That means a dealer can very quickly install a seat on the customer’s bike to let them test out its looks and comfort in the best way possible. Once the seat is mounted, dealers can also encourage their customers to take the Saddlemen seat for a demo ride. Dealers have discovered that almost every customer who demos a Saddlemen seat winds up purchasing it. Check with your Drag Specialties rep for the simple step-by-step process of setting up a Saddlemen demo program. The Saddlemen Seat Center launched in 2017, and dealers have been enthusiastic about its success as a sales tool. When a dealer signs up for the program, they can have the Saddlemen Seat Center up and running on the showroom floor in less than two weeks. Saddlemen knows dealers have a lot of other things to do, so the Seat Center is designed for quick and easy installation. Its vertical design keeps the seats and information at eye level for customers while taking up a minimal amount of floor space.
The Saddlemen Seat Center is a one-stop shopping sales tool and showcases five different Saddlemen seats. Customers can see, touch, hold and even demo one of the seats.

SADDLEMEN
A whole lot of technology goes into every one of Saddlemen’s seats, including that Gel-Core Technology and revolutionary SaddleGel material. All of this combines to provide a seat that reduces road vibrations and allows a rider to ride for longer.
The Saddlemen Seat Center is just one of the sales tools Saddlemen offers to help dealers educate their customers. Saddlemen also produces professional videos and other marketing tools that dealers can use to engage and inform customers via their social media platforms. Of course, educated sales staff can enhance a customer’s experience at the Saddlemen Seat Center, too. Saddlemen’s Gel-Core Technology feels great, but getting an in-depth look at how it works can be a valuable way to engage customers. The patented Gel-Core Technology can reduce engine vibration by up to 50 percent, deflect impact forces up to 92 percent and allow a rider to stay in the saddle up to 400 percent longer over a stock foam seat. Gel-Core Technology is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy from the road, and it does so with co-molding technology, which is Saddlemen’s proprietary process of combining comfort foam, progressive density foam and SaddleGel into a single molded component. The dampening and vibration diversion in a Saddlemen seat comes primarily from the SaddleGel, which has enough elasticity to conform to a rider’s body while still providing support. The result is reduced pressure points and better circulation, even on long rides.
balance between support and compliance, makes up the top layer of a seat. The foam is made up of varied cell sizes and types, all held in place by a skin that resists outside elements and seals the foam from water. In all, Saddlemen’s co-molding technology can be broken down into three layers. The top sculpted layer of foam is closest to the rider’s body, providing shape, cushioning, and a soft touch. Beneath that, the SaddleGel absorbs vibrations and shocks from the bike below while dispersing pressure and promoting blood flow above. Beneath those two layers, a polyurethane substructure provides the foundation and support for the entire seat. ■

TIRES
From Drawing Board to Dealership Behind the Scenes with the Commander III
Michelin’s test rider showcases the Commander III’s wet braking power at its proving ground in Ladoux, France. The tire allowed for controlled, confident braking on the slick wet track.
M
ichelin launched the first Commander tire line 20 years ago. Tire technology has improved a lot since then, and the demands of V-twin riders have evolved along with the motorcycles they ride. The Commander line used to be an all-purpose V-twin tire, but the new Michelin Commander III Touring and Cruiser tires give riders a more specific tire for their specific needs. Such a focused approach has involved an extensive amount of research, technology and detailed feedback from riders.
IN THE LAB AND IN THE FIELD
Michelin has pioneered a lot of technologies to enhance its tires’ performance capabilities. Wet-weather riding is a lot easier with solutions like Michelin XST Evo Sipe Technology and 3D sipes. Sportbikes have a better balance of performance and longevity with Michelin’s dual-compound 2CT+ Technology. While innovation is certainly a necessity for tire evolution, aesthetics are also a key factor. When Michelin has a new tire in development, they turn to riders to help understand what they want in performance features as well as what they want in looks.

For the Commander III, all of the collected information went back to tire developers working out of Michelin’s Worldwide Research Center in Ladoux, France. They combined the consumer feedback with Michelin’s ongoing research. Franck Ferreira-Da-Silva, Michelin’s Two-Wheel Business Segment Manager, explains that “Michelin simultaneously

researches and develops new compounds and materials to test new solutions and technologies to meet and exceed consumer needs. This is a global approach that was implemented as we focused on the U.S. market for the Michelin Commander III launch.” One of those technologies made a long journey before becoming a part of the Commander III Touring and Cruiser tires. Michelin first introduced a silica compound in 1985 for a GP 500 tire. Later, that compound was incorporated into passenger car tires and truck tires. Now, an all-new formulation of that silica compound can be found in the Commander III tires. The compound helps increase a tire’s grip, which offers stability for touring riders in all-weather situations, and cruiser riders who want instant grip for confidence on shorter rides.
TIME FOR TESTING
Armed with the latest in tire technology and feedback from riders, Michelin got to work designing and producing the new Commander III line. Soon after production began, Michelin conducted extensive internal testing to ensure that the performance traits had smoothly transitioned from the drawing board to the actual tire. External testing was also an important part of the process because it allows an objective review.
Commander III Touring tires
Next, Michelin approached product evaluators and key influencers in the powersports world to try out an early set of Commander III tires. Michelin’s relationship with LeMans meant that there was already a list of potential tier-one manufacturers to evaluate the new tire line. Nick Trask was among the riders and industry members who received the Michelin Commander III tires early. As the CEO of Trask Performance, Trask is a well-respected bike builder who knows how to put a set of tires through its paces. “I have three bikes with Commander III tires installed,” says Trask. “Myself and my techs love the way they feel. We have a few thousand miles on each of the bikes we have. I did get caught in the rain while riding here in Arizona, which is rare. These tires felt stable and predictable with no loss of traction.” Trask wasn’t the only one who put the miles on the new tires. Many of the early riders noticed a significant improvement in both the handling and longevity of the Michelin Commander III Touring tire, reporting minimal wear even after long distances. One of the things that Trask especially appreciated was Michelin’s refusal to improve one tire attribute at the expense of another. “This tire is supposed to be a higher mileage tire, too, and typically with that you need to compromise on something,” he explains. “It’s very difficult to get a tire that lasts without losing ride quality, traction or

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited and S&S Cycle teamed up here to create one of the most exciting bikes of the year, a genuine Flat Tracking Hooligan take on the wildest little Indian. Although there are plenty of S&S one-offs everywhere on this FTR, that tough-look Grand National 2-into-2 exhaust is right out of the catalog.

hey’re fast, they’re fun, they’re affordable and, even in stock form, the new Indian FTR 1200 looks exactly like what it is, a flat-track racer with a license plate on it. Inspired by those supersuccessful Wrecking Crew Indian AFT Twins, the FTR 1200 is quickly becoming a rider favorite. Not only have these bikes scratched the itch of sport-minded V-twin riders, they’ve lit a hot fire under sport-minded riders, period. The reasons are obvious. A full-cradle frame, horsepower numbers topping 120, full adjustable suspension systems, state-of-art electronics with Sport, Standard, and Rain modes available on the S-model versions – all that and more comes packaged in the FTR 1200. And, it only got better when a trio of industry giants – Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and S&S Cycle – came together to lift this Indian to the next level. With a makeover aimed at sparking the excitement of both traditional V-twin riders

and sportbike enthusiasts alike, this special build is the kind of bike that’ll capture powersports excitement across the board. “A lot of the credit for conceiving this triple-branded cover bike belongs to the folks at Drag Specialties,” says S&S Cycle VP of marketing David Zemla. “They came up with the general idea, and S&S drew up an initial rendering. Between the two of us the overall design really came together filling everyone’s need.” Already contracted to put together a small batch of FTR 1200s as hooligan racers, the build was done in-house by S&S Cycles in Viola, WI. Top-to-bottom, tip-to-tail, the Indian’s been extensively modified in that currently popular flat-track/hooligan style. “We made use of a lot of the pieces S&S originally developed for that limited run of FTRs,” Zemla explains. The triple clamps and gauge mount, the gas tank, the rear seat unit and the swingarm are all S&S one-offs.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
One side reads Parts Unlimited, the other side Drag Specialties and there’s an S&S Cycle logo on the tail. All three companies played a part in this good-time conversion.
One of the biggest changes, time-wise, came with the side plates and the one-off S&S hooligan rear-sets on them. “In order to get the foot controls positioned right for the hooligan/flat track theme, they had to be moved,” Zemla adds. No easy task, as it turns out. The FTR’s OE footpegs and foot-control mounts are built into the side plates which meant new mounts had to be machined in-house positioning the pegs and controls in the new, desired positions. It was a bit of business requiring something like two days of careful machining for each new mount. Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited wasn’t left idle during all of this. Along with all those one-off S&S additions plenty more came out of the FatBook and Street catalogs. Along with the S&S Cycle 1Grand National 2-into-2 high-mount
Custom side plates mount S&S Cycle rear-sets, a NEKEN Mees Flat Track handlebar has ODI Ruffian road race grips and a PSR Giorgio bar-end mirror. Subtle LED lighting from Custom Dynamics keep things visible.

The list also includes Vortex swingarm slider protection spools, a gold EK chain, PSR Giorgio non-folding bar end mirrors, Moose Racing hybrid stainless-steel footpegs and a full complement of subtle, Custom Dynamics LED lighting. With all this finished in a not-so-subtle triple-brand paint and graphics scheme by Artistimo Custom Designs in Waukesha, WI, Drag Specialties on one side, Parts Unlimited on the other, S&S Cycle on the tail, the FTR covers all the powersport bases. Nodding in one direction to the V-twin flat-track legacy of Indian’s past and its current success, this sport/hooligan FTR also takes direct aim at a segment of motorsport culture that’s growing by leaps and bounds. Naturally, the Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/S&S Cycle FTR 1200 will be a prominent part of the Drag Specialties semi display all year long. Stop by and take a look. You won’t be alone. ■

ost people who work in the motorcycle industry were riders before they had jobs in a motorcycle shop or aftermarket business. The story is usually similar – their friends were riders and convinced them to give it a try, possibly loaning them a bike. That experience led to a purchase of the bike of his or her own and they were hooked. The next step came when the riders love it so much they also choose to earn their living in the world of motorcycling.

As they have been doing for 14 years, the management at Drag Specialties has been putting on an annual ride for their dealers mainly to remind everyone why they got into this industry in the first place. It’s about riding. This year’s Drag Specialties Road Runner Dealer Ride followed their time-tested, three-day format with an opening day to get everyone checked into the El Conquistador Resort, near Tucson, Arizona. The following two days then offered the riders great choices of routes north into the mountains of southwest Arizona or to enjoy the desert with a trip to historic Tombstone. On the last night, the group all gathered for one final meal together, which included lively interviews

It was not revealed where next year’s Drag Specialties dealer ride will be held, but it will be the 15th annual Drag ride and will surely be something special. It’s not too early to start talking with your Drag rep about how to qualify. We hope to see you there.

LED LIGHTING
See And Be Seen
LED Lighting and Adaptive Tech
J.W. Speaker has created an LED lineup that provides superior visibility for your customers and those on the road around them. The Adaptive 2 LED Headlight Series eliminates dark corners and provides a punch of light more than 1,500 feet down the road.
O
ne of the critical benefits of LED lighting products is superior visibility, both for your customers while out riding and for those out sharing the road with them. Fortunately for all riders, J.W. Speaker has created an LED lineup addressing poor visibility with a portfolio of lighting options for riders on a wide selection of models. J.W. Speaker’s innovative approach to exceptional visibility, especially when taking corners, was introduced in the cutting-edge Adaptive 2 LED Headlight Series, eliminating dark corners and dynamically putting light where it was needed. The Adaptive 2 LED headlights were designed for Harley-Davidson models. The company has also expanded its portfolio to include fitments for additional V-twin and metric applications, thanks to the company’s extensive range of adaptor kits for seven-inch (PAR56) round lights. These innovative headlights dynamically provide ditchto-ditch lighting to eliminate dark corners and provide a punch of light more than 1,500 feet down the road, giving your customers a much more confident ride. J.W. Speaker’s signature plug-and-play Adaptive technology allows the light to sense when the bike is leaning so it can redirect the beam to illuminate dark corners. The headlight calculates bank angles on a real-time basis using proprietary technology and on-board sensors,

automatically directing the light array up or down as the motorcycle leans. J.W. Speaker also has two different models of reflectorbased LED headlights for those customers who want the benefits of LED lighting but prefer the classic reflector styling. The Model 8720 Reflector LED replaces 7-inch round headlights, while the Model 8620 light is an upgrade for 5¾-inch round headlights. Both are offered in a two-tone die-cast aluminum housing that provides rugged durability and a classic look. The state-of-the-art LEDs make sure your customers can definitely see and be seen. They are available with either a chrome or a dark chrome retro-styled face. Additionally, superior visibility doesn’t just stop at the headlight. Your customers on select Harley-Davidson models can upgrade their fog lights to J.W. Speaker’s Model 6045 and Model 6025 LED fog lights. Both offer superior visibility, extreme durability and long life. The Model 6045 is an upgrade for bulb-based 4½-inch (PAR36) fog lights and is designed to be compatible with most fog light housings. The Model 6025 is a 4-inch round reflector-based LED fog light designed for motorcycle riders who prefer the classic styling. ■

A Choppers delivers a big range of high-quality American-made handlebars to the aftermarket, but don’t think that’s where the company’s product offerings stop. In fact, LA Choppers is a powerhouse when it comes to parts and accessories for Harley-Davidson bikes and other V-twin models. With a lineup that includes everything from mufflers for touring bikes and cost-effective lowering kits to risers and designer air cleaners, it’s a brand that works hard to bring helpful and relevant products to your customer base. One great new product is LA Choppers’ sleek and understated, and modestly priced air cleaner kits. These are simple and sexy air cleaners that deliver noticeable power and styling, all without breaking the bank. The black version retails for $199.95, while the chrome model retails for $219.95. We’re talking style, performance and value. That’s a lot of bang for your customer’s buck. These air cleaners are extremely well designed and manufactured out of very high-quality materials. Fitments

Ultra Sound
High-Quality Audio for Older Models
Hogtunes has unveiled the Ultra Kit XL for 1998 to 2013 Harley-Davidson Ultras. The amp and speaker kit is a significant upgrade over the OE audio system.
Fitting an Ultra with XL rear speakers presented a design challenge. Because of the angle at which the rear speakers sit, it was impossible to use a large magnet, which is one of the components used for providing a better sound. The Hogtunes team had to develop a speaker with a smaller multi-magnet design that could still handle the power and retain the ability to produce outstanding bass.
A
fter the successful launch of its new XL speaker line for 1998 to 2013 Harley-Davidson Touring bikes, Hogtunes has just debuted the Ultra Kit XL for 1998 to 2013 Ultras. As the model years imply, the XL line is designed to offer a significant audio upgrade for older bikes. In fact, the XL line is designed to be similar in quality to Wild Boar Audio, a high-end audio brand that is part of the Hogtunes family. While Wild Boar Audio is for newer (2014 plus) bikes, XL kits provide similar quality for older models. Hogtunes XL offers speakers with better bass response, the ability to handle higher power and an overall greatlyimproved sound than a stock system. The 450-watt, dual amp and speaker combination is strong enough to let riders listen to music at any speed. The four speakers feature carbon fiber woofer cones, studio-quality crossover parts and titanium-impregnated 1-inch tweeters. Metal mesh grills are included with the front speakers, so a customer can either show them off or mount the speakers behind the stock cloth grills. Each 225-watt amp features Hogtunes’s proprietary R.E.M.I.T. circuitry, which enables excellent FM reception from a Class D amp.

The design of the Ultra Kit XL also took the mechanical speedo on 1998 and 1999 Ultras into consideration, with the wires sized to run seamlessly through the bike without hindering the function of the speedo cable. Like all Hogtunes kits, the Ultra Kit XL is a complete package that includes everything needed for installation. Because the system is completely plug-and-play, the installation is easy to do and the kit fits seamlessly into the Harley’s stock speaker openings. Hogtunes designed the XL system to be a significant upgrade without a significant increase in price. Dealers will often find that customers are ready to pay a small price difference in order to have the premium XL speakers. They can do so with the assurance that each Ultra Kit XL comes with a three-year warranty on the amplifiers and a five-year warranty on the speakers. With so many riders opting to purchase older-model Harleys, either as a way to get into motorcycling or simply to take advantage of affordable pricing, the arrival of the XL line is perfectly timed. It allows riders in that segment to easily install high-quality, modern speakers and amplifiers along with their other upgrades. ■

ne little electrical part can make the difference between whether a motorcycle goes or just sits on the sidelines. A faulty voltage regulator can be especially frustrating because the entire unit has to be replaced. Drag Specialties branded voltage regulators are premium USA-made products that undergo extensive testing to ensure reliability and longevity, so a bike can keep going.
Drag Specialties Premium voltage regulators are high-quality USA-made products that undergo extensive testing to ensure reliability and longevity.
Drag Specialties Premium voltage regulators can be used as OE replacements, but they are also a great choice for custom builders and DIY mechanics looking for a reliable and easily-installed voltage regulator to keep an old bike running or help light the spark in a new one. They provide accurately regulated voltage under all electrical loads. In fact, the Drag voltage regulator will work on some very old bikes, going as far back as the 1958 Harley-Davidson XL and the 1976 Shovelhead. It is an ideal part for builders putting an old engine in a new chassis, or even for a full restoration build. The voltage regulator’s small size belies the huge amount of work that went into its creation. It is the result of two years of design and development, all undertaken with the goal of creating a regulator that has outstanding performance, reliability and heat management. The attention to detail that went into the design did not stop when the final product was approved. During the assembly process, every voltage regulator undergoes three tests to ensure there are no hindrances to its reliability and performance. The assembly happens close to home, too – the voltage regulators are made in the USA, using domestic-made circuit boards, so it is easier for Drag Specialties to manage quality control. One of the factors that had to be considered during development of the Drag Specialties voltage regulator was heat. Heat is the worst enemy of electrical components, but it’s also an inevitable by-product of a voltage regulator’s job. Each Premium voltage regulator is designed for superior internal heat management so that it can withstand even the most extreme conditions. The result is that the regulator has better reliability for continued outstanding performance. Drag Specialties offers the Premium voltage regulators in a chrome or black finish with all-aluminum die-cast housings, and fitments are available for all early- and latemodel applications. In addition to the premium quality of the regulators, each one is housed in Drag Specialties Premium Packaging,

wapping out the stock handlebars is usually high on the list of upgrades your Harley-Davidsonriding customers have planned for their bikes. Not only can a new set of bars impart a cool new custom look, those bars can also help improve riding ergonomics, handling and control. However, along with the bar swap, there’s also a need to swap out the OE cables, brake lines and extend the wiring. That’s where things can get sticky. Magnum Shielding has a high-quality solution that not only makes this process easy, it also does so at a wallet-friendly price point. Magnum’s XR Handlebar Installation Kits offer a great fit and finish, and excellent quality at an economical cost. There are kits available for popular ABS and non-ABS Harley-Davidson models with 12-inch to 17-inch ape hanger-style handlebars. Included is everything needed for the swap – XR DOT brake lines with copper crush washers, throttle and idle cables or TBW extensions, clutch cable or XR hydraulic clutch line, hardware, and turn signal and switch wiring extensions. In assembling these kits, Magnum Shielding painstakingly ensures that all the cables and brake lines provide an extremely accurate OE-level fit. You can also be sure that the OE style construction uses all the fittings, tube assemblies, and manifolds essential for trouble-free installations while delivering professional looking results. There are three color combinations so your customers are sure to find something that will complement their bikes. The choices include clear coated stainless steel braid with chrome-plated fittings, and black coated braid with the option of either black chrome or chrome plated fittings. Everything is highly polished before plating for that premium pop your customers want. f you ask any Harley Davidson owner that walks through your door if they’re riding a stock, unmodified motorcycle, the odds of them saying, “Yes” are slim to none. Most of your customers are going to outfit their bikes with a performance exhaust and intake at the very least, and those who really want to stand out may even turn to a set of aftermarket wheels. When it comes to upgrading the rolling stock Harleys, Drag Specialties carries an impressive array of quality Coastal Moto wheels that are an easy bolt-on upgrade for your customers. From their newly updated forged wheels to their line of more affordable cast options, Coastal Moto has fitments, styles, and pricing to suit any rider’s tastes and budget.
The 3D cast wheels are offered in three styles and two finishes (chromed or black cut) in 21inch fronts and 18-inch rears offered for 2000 to 2019 FLHT, FLHR, FLHX, FLTRX models, with or without ABS.
All Coastal Moto wheels are engineered to be an easy bolt-on modification, and come with sealed wheel bearings and valve stems installed. Additionally, the rear hub accepts the stock cush drive, pulley, and brake rotor. Both the front and rear wheels are outfitted with brake sensors that maintain stock ABS functionality without the need for ECM modifications or ABS recalibration. Just add discs, rubber, and go! ■

The Coastal Moto Fuel forged wheel
Coastal Moto’s forged wheels come in three styles available in three finishes (Chrome, Black Powdercoat, and Black Cut) and are all made with a redesigned hub that accepts Harley’s newer perimeter-style brake discs. Because of this, your customers can utilize the OEM discs on their late-model machines, while those riding older Harleys have the opportunity to use the more visually appealing perimeter discs. This allows them to show off more of their custom wheels rather than hiding them behind the old-style solid discs. After all, what’s the point in custom wheels if people can’t see them?
If a customer is looking for a minimalist custom wheel, point them toward Coastal Moto’s forged aluminum Rockstar wheel. It’s available for ABS and nonABS models.
These forged wheels are milled from blanks of 6061-T6 aluminum right here in the USA, and the end result is an incredibly strong and light wheel that’s sure to make any bike stand out. Coastal Moto’s forged wheels are available in 19-inch, 21-inch, 23-inch, and 26-inch front sizes and 16-inch and 18-inch rear sizes to fit 2008 to 2019 FLHT, FLHR, FLHX, and FLTRX models, with or without ABS. t’s tough to top a classic, and when it comes to custom grips for a Harley-Davidson the Avon Grips Custom Contour is that classic. The Custom Contour grips look right, they feel right and with 10 distinct end-cap styles available, Chrome and Anodized, Custom Contours are a perfect complement to just about any Harley, mild to wild. Featuring a grippy, tackified rubber compound with a soft-knurl texture, the Custom Contours – as the name implies – are both ergonomic and highly functional. With a slightly contoured shape in a small, comfortable diameter it’s a grip that just feel right in a rider’s hands. The Kraton rubber features a soft, serrated texture that allows the rider to grip light, yet still hold on tight. While the smaller, comfortable diameter feature of the Custom Contour might not offer all the vibration dampening features of some of the other Avon Grips models like the Air Cushion or Memory Foam grips, the look, feel and allaround comfort more than makes up for that.

All this is available in 10 end-cap styles and in both traditional Push-Pull and Fly-By-Wire applications. Along with the timeless and classic style of the original Custom Contour, in Chrome or Black Anodize, there are Excalibur, Gatlin, Knurled, Rival and Spike end-cap styles, as well, all available with the choice of a Chrome or Black Anodize finish. Right from the start the Custom Contour grips, in any one of those end-cap styles, have been best-selling favorites in the Avon Grips lineup. While there are lots of other good-looking and comfortable grips and styles in that Avon lineup – models like the Air Cushions, Velvet Air and Memory Foam grips – it’s tough to top a classic. And for that there’s the Custom Contour. They always look great, they feel just right, they’re plenty comfortable, and like all Avon Grips they’re easy to install. TIRE
Growing Performance More Sizes, More Fitments
A
year after its debut, the Metzeler Cruisetec tire line continues to grow, including new sizes for older Harley-Davidsons as well as an OEM tire for Indian Challenger models. Metzeler calls its Cruisetec tire line “Performance Perfected” and they are designed to provide enhanced handling, grip and cornering stability for V-twins. Just because a motorcycle is older doesn’t mean it can’t be outfitted with the latest in tire technology. Two new rear Cruisetec sizes are being produced specifically for older Harley models. The MT90B16 (p/n 0306-0685) tire is compatible with OEM-size wheels, while 150/70B18 (p/n 0306-0675) is for older Harleys outfitted with 18-inch aftermarket wheels. The performance characteristics of the Cruisetec tire help an old bike feel new again.
Metzeler has expanded is Cruisetec tire lineup to include sizes for older model Harley-Davidsons, and an OE-replacement for the new Indian Challenger.
Metzeler designed the Cruisetec’s profile based on its sport-touring tires, pairing that profile with a robust carcass for V-twin use. The results are improved handling, both in the corners and on the straights.
The Metzeler Cruisetec is now the OEM tire for Indian Challengers, which includes a front tire in a new size. Dealers can provide customers with the direct OEM front replacement with 130/60B19 (p/n 0305-0662), which has a heavy weight rating. Another new Cruisetec size already in stock is the rear 260/40VR18 (p/n 0302-1341) for plus-size fitments on V-Rod, Breakout and Milwaukee-Eight Fat Boy models. Metzeler designed the Cruisetec’s profile based on its sport-touring tires, pairing that profile with a robust carcass for V-twin use. The combination results in improved handling characteristics as well as confidence-inspiring stability in a straight line, in corners and in all those lean angles in between. The rear Cruisetec tire has dual-compound construction to blend performance and endurance. The center compound promotes longevity as well as grip and stability. The softer compound on the shoulders helps a rider turn with confidence. Both the front and rear tires have a high silica content for faster warm-up and improved chemical grip.

The tread patterns on the Cruisetec tires are designed to increase mechanical grip and the size of the contact patch. The front tread pattern provides excellent water evacuation and improved braking efficiency. The rear Cruisetec tire features long alternated grooves in the rotation direction, which helps distribute pressure evenly to ensure regular wear. Of course, Metzeler has been getting plenty of feedback from members of the industry who were quick to try the Cruisetec tire. THRASHIN Supply founder Lance Coury has Cruisetec tires on his 1992 FXR. “My FXR has a 111-inch Evo in it that would normally break the rear tire loose without even trying,” he says. “After switching to the Cruisetec tires, my bike has full traction anywhere in the power I need it, making the bike more controllable.” Closer to home, Drag Specialties sales rep Blake Melton feels like the Cruisetec tires have improved more than just his 2008 Dyna Superglide. Melton says, “I have been super happy with the new Cruisetecs. They are a sticky, grippy confidence builder. These tires make you a better rider.” ■

Bringing Stopping Power to America
fter more than 70 years and with a worldwide reach, Galfer Brakes is still a family affair. Maffio Milesi founded the brand in 1946, and today his grandson Sandro Milesi heads Galfer USA. The patriarch of the Galfer brand started things off in Torino, Italy, and eventually made it to Barcelona, Spain, where a lot of the manufacturing still takes place today. It was Maffio’s son Giorgio who moved to the United States in 1992 to open Galfer USA. Prior to that, Galfer was a relatively unknown brand in America. Today, what started as a 900 square-foot warehouse in California has turned into a booming business in Carson City, NV., where a team of 24 people handle all of Galfer’s business in America. Among the many areas of focus, Galfer USA includes an R&D department and a dedicated racing department. Additionally, Galfer USA is also responsible for manufacturing some of the parts most popular with Harley-Davidson riders, including brake rotor components and stainless-steel brake lines.
Galfer USA is the American branch of the company started more than 70 years ago in Torino, Italy. Today, many of the brand’s brake products are manufactured in Spain.
Galfer manufactures performance braking systems for all facets of powersports, with a focus on highend quality combined with premium service. For Harley dealers, that means 2020 is kicking off with even more applications for brake pads and oversized rotors, including 12½-inch and 13-inch sizes. There are also additional color options for brake rotor carriers. The focus on service also means more dealer training. Avoid Premature Battery Replacement
A
stored motorcycle’s battery slowly discharges due to draw by always-on circuitry, including the processor that retains vehicle settings. A 12.8V / 13.2V Lithium battery discharges faster as it has less reserve capacity – Amp-hour (Ah) – than a sealed 12V AGM lead-acid battery. All batteries risk a shorter lifespan if deep discharged, with lithium’s risk of permanent damage very high, even after a single deep discharge.
Smart battery lead for AGM and STD lead-acid batteries. OptiMate also has an option for lithium batteries.
OptiMate’s smart battery leads can help you and your customer avoid premature and unnecessary battery replacement. Three LED lights display the battery’s charge level and ability to start the engine. Green means the battery is start ready and charged. Yellow means engine will start, but the battery soon needs to be charged. Red means the engine might not start, immediately recharge to avoid permanent battery damage. Recharging is made easy via the weather protected charge port. The new innovative dual ring design fit ¼-inch or 5/16-inch battery posts.
OptiMate O-124 (p/n 3807-0317) is ideal for 12V AGM and STD lead-acid batteries. Its four charge level lights cover the voltage range of all lead-acid batteries, from STD wet cell to sealed AGM that hold a higher voltage. It is also available in a Jar of 20 (p/n 3807-0491), ideal for monitoring of multiple vehicles on the showroom floor. OptiMate O-127 (p/n 3807-0319) is ideal for 12.8V / 13.2V lithium batteries. A fourth LED light blinks rapidly if vehicle charge voltage exceeds 14.6V, warning risk of permanent battery damage is high if overcharging continues. ■

It doesn’t take a trip to Feuling’s Oceanside, CA facility to get the straight story, though. Feuling has made cam choices easy and the answers are in the FatBook and at Feuling online. With Reaper Series cams available for Sportsters and Evos, Twin Cams and Milwaukee-Eights, and specialized grinds for each there’s a lot to choose from. However, all those detailed specifications for each cam – the lift, duration, lobe centerline and overlap – might confuse more customers than it enlightens. Because of this, Feuling includes a concise explanation of what each Reaper Series cam will deliver and at what rpm it’ll do it.
LIFTERS
((AVAILABLE IN SHORT OR FULL TRAVEL))
The Evo 518s, for example, are bolt-ins with an all-around power boost, whereas the 543s and 594s will require higher compression and performance springs. A Twin Cam 525 or 543, both with strong, low-range to mid-range power can be compared with the 630s, cams for high-rpm performance. Similar breakdowns are listed for Sportsters and Milwaukee-Eights, and for those M8s alone there are five Reaper options. All of this is easily understood with Feuling’s help. There are explanations for Feuling’s valve lifters, too. Feuling has even made choosing the correct lifter a snap by outlining all the features and best applications for the HP+, Race Series Full Travel, and Race Series Short Travel lifters. ■

TRIKE CONVERSIONS
Keep the Ride Going Trike Conversions for Softails The kit’s styling is designed to flow seamlessly with the Softail’s lines, and there’s a spacious trunk for additional storage.
An onboard compressor allows for suspension adjustments to suit varying loads and riding conditions, while settings and system voltage are displayed on bright LED gauges. Strong, steady braking is provided by two 12-inch discs squeezed by multi-piston calipers, and if your customer’s Harley has ABS, that functionality can be maintained on the Trike thanks to careful engineering on the part of Motor Trike’s designers. Stock accessories like Touring trunks and backrests can also be accommodated in the conversion.
E
very rider loves the thrill of the open road and the feeling of the wind on their face, but some riders prefer more stability than two wheels can offer. For your customers who want the ultimate in balance and support, Motor Trike’s Spartan Trike conversion kits are an excellent solution. These bolt-on kits turn two-wheeled Harley-Davidson Softails into three-wheelers that promise all the fun and excitement of a motorcycle, but with the security of three contact points. Motor Trike has been making Trike conversions for 25 years and utilizes cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to engineer and build its Spartan kits. It all begins with a precise laser scan and digitization of the OEM chassis, and this map is used to ensure the kits are a perfect fit. There’s no welding or fabrication required, as each kit is designed to be a bolt-on project. All needed hardware is even included!
The Spartan kit is engineered to work with Harley’s 1997 through 2007 Heritage Softail Classic, Softail Fatboy, and Softail Deluxe. Even with the Spartan kit installed, these stylish bikes maintain a clean profile. The fiberglass body matches the models’ lines and offers a spacious trunk for hauling additional cargo. Accessories such as a tow hitch, electric reverse gear, and color-matched paint are also available. As delivered, the bodywork is gel coated and ready for a dealer-applied paint job. Don’t have much experience with Trike conversions? Don’t worry! When your customers order a Spartan kit, you’ll have Motor Trike’s technical support team by your side every step of the way. From outlining kit options like paint and accessories to installation assistance for your service techs, Motor Trike will ensure the best possible results for you and your customers. ■

Motor Trike’s Spartan Trike conversion kit is a bolt-on solution for turning a HarleyDavidson Softail into a three wheeler.
Stability comes by way of two 15-inch polished Torque Thrust rear wheels shod with wide, grippy tires. These are supported by progressive coilover shocks with 4-inches or more of travel for a smooth, controlled ride. The kit’s independent rear suspension is robotically welded to exacting tolerances and utilizes high-quality automotive bushings that insulate the chassis from driveline and suspension vibrations for even more comfort.
