How The King Of The Baggers Was Born by D on Em de

With roughly 300 pounds trimmed off the stock chassis, a fully built race motor and sporty paint job, Saddlemen’s Harley-Davidson race bike was a major attention getter at Laguna Seca. Photo by Brian J. Nelson

A

bout a year ago, the term “Performance Bagger” started to become a regular part of the motorcycle industry vocabulary. Baggers had of course been the most popular segment of the market for years, but in addition to upgraded seats, lights and sound systems, riders wanted their bikes to run better and faster. Fittingly, the 2020 Drag Specialties FatBook catalog featured a very sporty looking Performance Bagger on its cover built by Curtiss Hoffman.

The target number was to have 12 teams who would create their version of the ultimate Performance Bagger. The main rule was that their machine had to be a Harley-Davidson or Indian that originated as a Bagger model and for the race had to have remained true to the definition of a Bagger. Each team would also need to provide a rider who had previous racing experience that would be acceptable to the MotoAmerica officials.

The first time I heard any talk about racing Performance Baggers was at the 2019 Drag Specialties dealer ride in Tucson, Arizona. Rob Buydos, the energetic and ever-popular voice of Drag Specialties, told me about his idea to have a race featuring Baggers built by some of Drag’s vendors. And it wasn’t just a dream, he already had the commitment from MotoAmerica (the nation’s leading roadrace sanctioning organization) to hold the event at the big Monterey SpeedFest at Laguna Seca in July of 2020.

At that point, the Coronavirus was just beginning to make news, but it wasn’t long until MotoAmerica was forced to postpone its July race date until late-October and also accept the requirement to run without spectators. So it was that on October 24th, the first-ever Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race was at last set to run. Some of the biggest and best-known aftermarket manufacturers were on hand with a “Race Bagger,” rider and crew. That included Alloy Art, Arlen Ness, Barnett Clutches and Cables, Bassani Xhaust, Feuling Parts, Performance Machine, Roland Sands Design, S&S, Saddlemen, SLYFOX, The Speed Merchant, Trask Performance and Vance & Hines. The Bassani machine encountered some last-minute technical difficulties that prevented it from starting the race, but when the starter’s flag was waved, a dozen power-packed V-Twin Baggers went thundering down the track into turn one. ■

When the Drag dealer ride was over, Buydos had already secured a number of tentative commitments from vendors eager to participate, even though rules and other important details were still mostly in Rob’s head. Even so, there was no turning back now. In early January, he organized a meeting at the Newport Beach Elks Lodge for all of the interested parties to date. LeMans Corp chairman and founder Fred Fox was also in town and attended to hear what it was all about. That first meeting resulted in many details being worked out, and that led to a second meeting in mid-February at the NVP in Louisville, Kentucky.

» The long-awaited battle to become the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers was on! Be sure to read all about it starting on page 10.

Ride Safe!

new racing event that some thought made no sense proved the skeptics wrong at the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey, California. The inaugural running of the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers in late October was, in fact, an overwhelming success with a dozen race-prepared Harley-Davidson and Indian Baggers rumbling virtually trouble-free around the famed Laguna Seca Raceway in an 8 lap Final. The King of the Baggers idea was conceived by Rob Buydos, the long-time voice of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited. Recognizing the strong interest today for Performance Baggers, the concept developed into a complete package for the MotoAmerica race sanctioning body with Drag Specialties signing on as title sponsor and organizer. A number of leading Drag vendors were then invited to build and race a Harley-Davidson or Indian Bagger modified however they wished, as long as the machine remained true to the definition of today’s Baggerstyle motorcycle. Each vendor also had to arrange and provide a rider with professional racing experience.

Barnett Clutches & Cables was one of the Drag vendors that accepted the invitation to build a machine for the firstever Drag Specialties King of the Baggers competition. Their rider was Josh Chisum (middle). Barnett clutches were also used by most of the other teams.

Answering the call to compete were Alloy Art Manufacturing, Arlen Ness, Barnett Clutches & Cables, Bassani Xhaust, Feuling Parts, Performance Machine, Roland Sands Design, S&S Cycle Inc, Saddlemen, SLYFOX, The Speed Merchant, Trask Performance and Vance & Hines. When the sun went down in Monterey on October 24th, Performance Baggers now had a place in the world of motorcycle racing with a number of MotoAmerica races around the country already being discussed for Bagger races in 2021.

Bauman Repeats as AFT SuperTwins Champion Scott Hunter/American Flat Track photos

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited Indian rider Briar Bauman put in a stellar performance during the 2020 American Flat Track season, a schedule that featured multiple double-header weekend races. Here is Bauman putting in the fastest qualifying time during the AFT Finale at Daytona I.

F

ollowing 15 rounds of epic Progressive American Flat Track action, Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Briar Bauman successfully completed his bid to repeat as AFT SuperTwins Champion in the AFT Finale at Daytona II.

Even with an extended pandemic-imposed pause, the highly anticipated 2020 showdown between Bauman and multi-time series king and Drag Specialties/ Parts Unlimited/Indian teammate Jared Mees proved more than worth the wait. The momentum swung back and forth on a nearly weekend-by-weekend basis, leaving both superstars still in control of their destiny heading into the Daytona finale. Bauman seized control of the title fight with a clutch runner-up finish in the first race of the Daytona double-header, which seemingly made the final task before him relatively easy by his standards. All he needed to do at Daytona International Speedway the next night was score an eighth-place finish to cap off a title defense that saw him rack up six wins, four seconds, three thirds, and one seventh along the way.

and the AFT SuperTwins presented by Vance & Hines Main was pushed to the front of the pack once conditions allowed to ensure the season’s premier-class champ was crowned before the night was over. The changes and unpredictability of the day could have easily thrown an admittedly stressed Bauman out of his rhythm. Instead he responded like a champion. Starting on the front row with Mees as a result of their qualifying performance, Bauman got away in third and glued himself to the rear wheel of his championship rival. Bauman, Mees and the other riders battled it out, with the final outcome of Bauman landing a title-clinching fourth-place finish, and Mees a second-place finish, for a second overall for the season.

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider and two-time AFT SuperTwins Champion Briar Bauman celebrates his repeat victory with his then fiancée – and now wife – Parts Unlimited/KTM AFT Singles rider Shayna Texter.

“Obviously, things went really, really well,” said back-to-back champ Bauman. “I was able to do what we came for and what we set out to do all season for Jess Garcia and the whole Garcia family — win the championship. Jess was with me every step of the way. It means a lot to me to be able to fulfill what I showed up to do.” ■

nown as one of the good guys with a vast motorcycle knowledge, and as a master of building high-performance Harley-Davidsons, industry legend Skeeter Todd died in early October at the age of 70. After news of his passing broke, tributes flooded social media sites praising Todd for his eagerness to share his encyclopedic know-how of engine and bike building – advice he was always quick to pass along. As Texas wildman and Strokers Dallas owner Rick Fairless put it, “Skeeter knew more about motorcycles than anybody I’ve ever known.”

The noted builder was part of the 2020 class of inductees at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Hamsters USA organization since 2010. Todd served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970. He was the recipient of both the Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals, and was also awarded the Bronze Star. After 20 years of working with the Laborers Union, he started working in the motorcycle industry and went on to have a career working with a range of aftermarket companies developing performance parts, including a stint with Orange County Choppers. In addition to his skills as a builder and mechanic, Todd was a performance wizard and talented rider, recalls industry figure Bob Kay, who remembered him as “the King of Turbo.” He recalled a trip he took with Todd to the Americade Rally, accompanied by a group from Cycle World magazine. “They showed up on a Sportster and a couple of sportbikes for a fast tempo ride through the twisties of the Adirondacks,” Kay said. “Skeeter and I were on Baggers and they made the mistake of razzing us about keeping up. The banter ended xxxxxx when Skeeter and I passed them on the inside of an off-camber tight corner with both of us dragging our floorboards, laughing as we rolled on the throttle.”

NEWS EVENTS Online Show ‘n’ Shine BIKE COMPETITION GONE VIRTUAL people and enjoy visiting new places and experiencing the local shops and flavors. Among the activities and features of all those rallies – outdoor markets, burnout contests, slowride course, etc. – there’s always an event that’s a perennial favourite for bikers of all stripe, the Show ‘n’ Shine. In lieu of a traditional in-person dealer show, the team at Parts Canada addressed the current Coronavirus restrictions by hosting a Virtual Dealer Conference in September. The show featured online presentations by a number of Parts Canada vendors, offering dealers some great insight into the hottest new products coming to market. And, while an online burnout contest wasn’t likely, the platform was perfect for holding a Virtual Show ‘n’ Shine competition.

A

t a time when hosting large events has not been an option in locations around the world, Parts Canada has worked hard to keep some of its business and social routines intact. While riding a motorcycle is, by nature, a self-isolating activity, the industry as a whole is very social. Many customers plan their vacations around participating in rallies and events so they can ride new roads, meet new

While not all of the bike registrations were V-Twin, the Parts Canada builders were eager to submit their entries virtually by showcasing their builds with photos and videos. Legend Suspensions was quick to step up as the presenting sponsor of the Drag Specialties Show n’ Shine, and offered up either a set of REVO ARC shocks or a set of REVO A shocks and an AXEO front suspension as a prize for the inaugural competition winner.

E-BIKE SALES AND MARKETING TIPS

F

or anyone paying attention, it’s as obvious as the mask on your face: Electric-assist bicycles, already a major force in Europe, are now a big deal in America – and very much the coming thing. It’s happening quickly, too, faster than even E-bike adherents thought possible. We know why, of course. E-assist bicycles not only allow riders to go farther and faster than traditional pedal-only bikes (despite their extra heft), they’re in many ways more exciting – and can also give riders a fantastic workout.

E-BIKE

All of which makes extra exciting the announcement earlier this year of LeMans Corporation’s – Drag Specialties’ parent company – collaboration with INTENSE Cycles to build a pair of electric-assist mountain bikes specifically aimed at Powersports customers. The bikes in question are the Tazer MX Pro and Tazer MX Expert. The former adds Powersports-industry componentry from the likes of Öhlins (shock and fork), Renthal (handlebar), Magura (brakes and controls) and others to what’s already a class-leading e-MTB – the Tazer, also in Pro and Expert builds – from Temecula, California-based INTENSE Cycles. The Tazer MX Pro and Expert are exclusive to Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited, with bikes scheduled to begin appearing

in more than 150 dealerships nationwide this December. A full line of e-MTB-oriented gear and accessories will also be available through Drag Specialties, many from Powersportsindustry companies carried by Drag’s sister company, Parts Unlimited. The list includes Alpinestars, 100%, Thor, Renthal, ODI, Maxima and others. Suggested retail for the Tazer MX Pro is $7995, with the Expert model priced at $5995.

MERCHANDISING AND MARKETING The key to this brand-new effort and product line, of course, is grabbing customer interest and making sales, with Powersports customers and with those new customers who’ve been waiting for the right time to jump into the E-bike market. To that end we queried a duo with intimate knowledge of the product line and its development – Jeff Derge, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for LeMans Corporation, and Jon-Erik Burleson, ex-President of KTM North America and head of Two Wheel Group, a Powersports consulting agency. Burleson’s agency works closely with INTENSE Cycles and helped put this program together. How, we asked them, can dealers most successfully merchandise their new line of E-bicycles and gear, and maximize their investment? Here’s what they said.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Tazer MX Expert

FOCUS ON WARRANTY/SET-UP When it comes to warranty and set-up, the motorcycle industry is pretty advanced, so it pays to keep thing similar with E-bikes. “One of the great things about INTENSE Cycles is the comprehensive way they deal with warranty, tech, training and set-up issues,” says Derge. “They’ll make it comfortable for dealers, give them the tools they need (including 20-some tech videos for their technicians), and allow them to do business the way they’re used to doing it. All of that will resonate with customers, too.”

TAZER MX

for e-MTB images so they can wrap an entire wall in the their stores!”

SPONSOR A GNCC RIDER DEMO, DEMO, DEMO “The biggest thing with E-bikes is the transformation that happens the instant folks ride one, so getting potential customers on the bikes is key,” says Burleson. “There’s almost always an ‘Aha!’ moment when people first throw a leg over, but they’ve got to try it, and pedal it, to get it. I’ve watched a lot of E-bike demos in person, and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone get off the thing and not smile. So demo rides are key for dealers, whether they’re in the store’s parking lot, or at a local park, or at some event or open house.”

EXPERT ON STAFF “Just as it’s key to have motorcycle experts on staff,” says Derge, “dealers need an E-bike expert or two to help spread the good word. Problem is, E-bikes are relatively new, so there aren’t a lot of adherents out there … yet. So I’d encourage dealers to engage their staff members by letting them borrow and ride demo bikes whenever possible.”

SOCIAL MEDIA “Social media represents a huge opportunity for dealers to get the message out, about their store, for sure, but also about how cool and fun and functional E-bikes can be,” says Derge. “This is a new category, remember, and there are plenty of ways to make E-bikes compelling and interesting on the social media front. Be creative, and have fun with it.”

“If a dealer has a National Championship GNCC e-MTB event or top-level rider in their area, or even if they don’t, consider sponsoring him or her,” Derge says. “Doing so will bring attention to that great series and your dealership, and attract customers interested in the e-MTB scene.”

TAZER MX: THE CONCEPT Implementing any or all of these merchandizing and marketing suggestions is the first step toward building a successful E-bike business with the INTENSE Tazer MX Pro and Tazer MX Expert, and the associated parts and accessories line. Not to be overlooked, though, is the backstory of how the LeMans Corporation/Drag Specialties and INTENSE Cycles relationship came to be. As we know in the Powersports business, personal relationships and passion are some of the main driving forces for successful retailing. The LeMans/INTENSE partnership is chock-full of both. For many reasons, economic, cultural and otherwise, traditional bicycle sales have always been a bit tricky for Powersports dealers. But the advent, technological growth and popularity of e-assist bikes – and especially e-MTBs – over the last several years have pushed them fairly solidly into the Powersports arena.

DISPLAYS, POP, CATALOG, ETC. “As always, we’ll help support dealers with all sorts of displays, materials, POP and stands for their bike-sales areas,” says Derge. “We’ve also prepared a 68-page catalog that’s jam-packed with gear and accessories for customers, so we’re pretty confident they’ll have what they’ll need to promote successfully and make their sales areas really sing. Dealers are investing in this opportunity and asking

But how this whole e-bicycle thing came together for LeMans Corp. is maybe even more intriguing. “I’d been following the E-bike progression for several years, especially at the EICMA shows, seeing the impact E-bikes were having on the scooter market,” recalls Derge. “I mean, you can take your E-bike into your apartment in downtown Milan, which is difficult to do with a scooter. Seeing all the brands we know showing off their bikes – KTM, Ducati, Yamaha, etc. – was impressive. “You could see it evolving. Then, when GNCC added an e-MTB class, I said to myself, ‘OK, here it comes.’ If we could get into this with the right product or products, what a great opportunity for our dealers … a whole new product line that would encourage the two-wheel-powered lifestyle for both new and current customers. A win-win.” Derge then attended a GNCC event in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and happened to cross paths with longtime Parts/Moose Racing rider – and old friend – Dick Burleson. “Dick said, ‘What are you doing here?’ and I laughed,” Derge remembers. “I told him I was looking into possibly getting Parts involved in the E-bike market, and he said, ‘Well, you need to talk to Jon-Erik.’ Dick said Jon-Erik [who is Burleson’s son] was working with INTENSE Cycles and owner Jeff Steber, and doing some interesting stuff on the E-bike front. I got in touch with Jon-Erik shortly after that trip, and the rest, as they say, is history.” Turns out Jon-Erik Burleson, ex-president of KTM for several years before establishing his Two Wheel Group in 2017, had plenty to show and tell Derge. The Tazer MX Pro Build features a host of high-quality components, including Renthal Fatbar handlebars. It also has Shimano's most powerful motor, the EP800.

E-BIKE

Motorcycle and ATV/UTV customers tend to understand e-assist bicycles quite a bit more than pedal-only designs, as do many powersport store associates. Add to that the fact that some 80 percent of off-road enthusiasts already own a mountain or road bicycle, and you’ve got the makings of a pretty serious potential market – all of which helps explain why Drag Specialties joined forces with INTENSE Cycle to build and market the Tazer MX.

28

“We will always stay in our lane, and that means supporting Powersports dealers,” says Drag Specialties’ Derge. “What’s changed is what’s happening out there. E-bikes are entering our market. Power-assist bicycles really are a power sport. They’re not really bicycles in the traditional sense. Once you get on one it’s a game-changer. Doesn’t matter if you’re into Harleys or UTVs … these things are just really fun to ride. It’s not a bicycle, and it’s not a motorcycle. It’s in the middle, and we feel it fits into our space really well. And, judging by the response we’ve gotten from dealers, they agree.”

“I’d been working with INTENSE and [owner] Jeff [Steber] for a while, and couldn’t help but be impressed,” says the younger Burleson. “Jeff’s a mad-scientist/genius type, and has been on the leading edge of mountain bike design and downhill racing for many, many years. Jeff grew up riding and racing dirtbikes, and brought that mentality to his mountain bike efforts, especially in terms of suspension and chassis design. He’s also based in Temecula, not too far from KTM’s headquarters, and is really connected to the So Cal motocross scene and many of the top riders. Jeff saw early on what e-MTBs could be, and the INTENSE Tazer was the result. “Then my dad met Jeff [Derge] at the GNCC race, and put us together, and I could immediately tell Jeff was seeing what was happening, and seeing the potential,” Burleson remembers. “We connected immediately, coming at things from the same basic point of view and ethos, both of us understanding the Powersports customer and how this might work. We wondered, ‘How can we work together?’ and through those discussions, which involved myself and Derge and Steber and other key folks at INTENSE and Drag Specialties, the concept of an e-MTB with serious motocross/off-road componentry and flavor began to emerge.”

TAZER MX

The highly tunable Ohlins TTX22M coil shock and Ohlins DH38 race fork mean the Tazer MX Pro can tackle any terrain.

DEVELOPMENT “We started brainstorming and having meetings, some here in Janesville and others at their place in So Cal,” says Derge. “We rode their standard Tazer and of course were impressed, and the idea to outfit the bike with Powersports-oriented componentry – Öhlins suspension, Magura brakes and controls, Renthal handlebar, etc. – seemed solid, as we felt it would resonate best with Powersports customers. The question was, how do we build an e-MTB that will make motorcycle customers go, ‘Oh, man, I need one of those!’ A few months later we saw the prototypes Jeff’s team had put together, and it was a total OMG moment! Really exciting for the entire team, and a great collaboration.” Derge notes that as soon as the project received the green light, he outfitted a standard Tazer with the Öhlins fork and shock, and was immediately impressed. He was able to do stuff on the bike that he couldn’t do on his other bikes, he says. “I met Jon-Erik when KTM moved to So Cal, and it was a natural to work with he and Christy [LaCurelle, Jon-Erik’s business partner] and Two Wheel Group,” says INTENSE CEO Steber. “Jon-Erik’s a big-time enthusiast, a brand guy and he’s brilliant business-wise, and it was immediately obvious he could help us add to our brand image and expand our reach. He was the conduit to Jeff [Derge] and Drag Specialties. Doing a model focused toward the Powersports customer was a no-brainer for us and for them. We’ve been involved in the moto side of things for a long time, and of course they’re motorcycle guys, so it was a natural. We’re fortunate to have Ryan Dungey involved, as well. Dealers and Drag Specialties reps responded enthusiastically to the project, grinning like kids during initial demos at the Louisville NVP Product Expo launch in February. So many dealers signed up for the ability to sell Tazer MX models in 2021 that pre-booking had to be halted, at least temporarily. A second phase of dealer bookings will commence shortly, according to Derge.

“Dealers were really positive,” says Burleson. “Based on the info we collected it was obvious they were hungry for the product, and saw this as a strategic move that Parts was making to get in front of the trend. They’re already part of the family, and there’s trust there. If I were a dealer and attended that show, that’s the message I’d take home … that they are thinking about our future. “Hats off to Derge and Drag Specialties for considering the future and where the sport is going,” says Steber. “E-bikes are obviously the convergence of bikes and moto. They’re quiet, mostly maintenance-free, super-efficient, lightweight, low-emission and a lot of fun. Vehicle electrification is coming. Just look at Tesla. This is a great way for Powersports dealers to get a foot in that doorway. Yes, battery tech is a bit of a limiting factor now, but advances are coming, some from the SpaceX project, just like back in the ’60s when we learned so much from NASA. In five years thing will look much different.”

A FINAL WORD “If I hadn’t met up with Dick Burleson at that GNCC event, things might not have ended up as they have, so I’m pretty happy I did,” says Derge. “This is a really exciting product and program, for us and for dealers and, once they start riding their bikes, our e-MTB customers. I’m stopped on the trail all the time on my Tazer, and everyone asks ‘What do you think?’ and ‘Do you get a great workout?’ … and I say, every time, ‘I love it’ and ‘Yep, I get a killer workout!’ Hard to argue with that.

VO2 AIR INTAKE: BORN IN RACING

Born on the track, built in the USA and delivered to your dealership via Drag Specialties, the deep-breathing VO2 air intake kit is bolt-on performance your customers will feel at the twist of the wrist. It’s now available in the new Black-Contrast finish.

W VANCE & HINES

hen your customers are looking for additional power, Vance & Hines’ deep-breathing VO2 X and VO2 Blade air intake kits have always been a popular performance bolt-on. Now available in a Black-Contrast finish, those same kits offer a new style upgrade in addition to that power boost. It’s only natural that Vance & Hines would be bringing more good-looking performance parts to the FatBook. The company is all about making Harley-Davidson motorcycles run harder while looking better. That Vance & Hines name not only backs those Factory Pro Stock drag-racing bikes, it’s also on the Factory Racing flat-track XG750Rs. While mostly associated with go-fast, high-performance Harley-Davidsons, Vance & Hines hasn’t always catered to those Milwaukee-born V-Twins. Back in 1971 when Terry Vance and Byron Hines first met, the bikes they were making go faster where Hondas, most notably the CB750. It was a hot model and Terry and Byron were squeezing those inline-fours for everything they had to give. It didn’t take long for this duo to catch the eye of noted racer Russ Collins – Hines for his mechanical wizardry and Vance for his organizational and riding talents. Both were soon

employed at the fledgling Russ Collins Engineering and for most of the 1970s the trio developed a range of performance parts as they built and raced some of the wildest drag-bikes ever, including the triple-engine Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Top Fueler and the record-setting Sorcerer. In 1979 Hines and Vance branched out on their own and began developing performance parts and establishing a racing history that would end up in the record books. Today it’s those new VO2 intakes making news, but back then the new Vance & Hines 4-into-1 megaphone exhaust would come to define the 1980s as Vance & Hines would land nearly 30 NHRA Nationals wins and capture 14 National Championships before Vance hung up his helmet in 1988. Turning to road racing in the 1990s, Vance & Hines became the force behind Yamaha’s AMA Pro team, winning the Daytona 200 and the AMA Superbike and Supersport titles before taking over Ducati’s factory road racing team and scoring even more wins there. Only then did Vance & Hines turn towards Harley-Davidson. The V-Twin market, this race-winning duo surmised, was more than ready for the kind of custom performance they had to offer. The sheer volume of everything in the FatBook today bearing their name is testament to how right they were.

GALFER Ever since those early days of racing, Byron Hines and Terry Vance have taken what they learned on the track and translated that into pure power for a huge range of aftermarket products.

Vance & Hines exhausts, intakes and electronics are all well-known, all popular sellers and proven performers. Harley-Davidson itself was quick to recognize this, and in 2000 hired Vance & Hines to run its factory Screamin’ Eagle drag racing team, which they still do. And when Harley replaced the legendary XR750 flat-track racer with the all-new XG750R, once again Vance & Hines was tapped to head that racing effort. All this, in a roundabout way, brings things back to those two new-style Vance & Hines intake kits, the VO2 X and VO2 Blade and their contrast-black finish. More than just good lookers, they’re performers. As Vance & Hines well knows, making a Harley-Davidson sing doesn’t happen with just one change. It isn’t just pipes, it isn’t just a re-mapped fuel system, it isn’t just a

free-flowing intake. Total performance takes it all and Vance & Hines has it, including those deep-breathing VO2 intakes. Each VO2 Air kit uses a washable, reusable filter, but those filters are just the start of what makes these setups perform. There’s a specially designed backing plate that features an internal, flow-enhancing venture, as well as built-in breather assemblies. The non-restrictive covers are all CNC-machined billet aluminum and, depending on the model, they’re secured with race-spec ARP bolts. Everything needed for installation is included and it’s all offered in the following choice of finishes – Chrome, Black, Wrinkle Black and the new Black-Contrast. As is true with just about everything Vance & Hines has ever produced, the VO2 intakes are made in-house in Santa Fe Springs, California, right where Vance & Hines began. From concept to CAD design, from prototyping to final testing and inspection, it all happens in-house. Take a look at the VO2 X and Blade in their new finishes. But don’t stop there. There are many other styles available, including the VO2 Naked, another race-inspired intake that is designed to work with a stock Harley cover and still deliver Vance & Hines performance. ■

OILS & LUBRICANTS

Fall Refresh

Replacing Fluids After a Summer of Riding

Bel-Ray can help your customers with their post-riding season maintenance thanks to its range of oils and lubricants specifically formulated for V-Twin motorcycles.

W

ith winter creeping closer, many riders are already facing the inevitable day when their V-Twin will go into storage until the spring arrives. Even for those lucky riders who live in a place with year-round riding, the summer months are still the time for racking up the miles. After all that work, a bike has earned a little bit of TLC. Instead of waiting until spring, now is the time to help customers get their motorcycles refreshed after a busy riding season. Of course, one of the things at the top of the to-do list for post-riding season maintenance is to replace the fluids in the bike. Bel-Ray helps V-Twin riders get that done with fluids that are made specifically for V-Twin applications. Bel-Ray’s range of oils and lubricants for modern Harley-Davidsons are designed to boost performance and longevity, helping engines meet their full potential while running smoothly. Bel-Ray accomplishes this with proprietary chemistry that is used to create each specific blend of oils and additives. For air-cooled Harley engines, Bel-Ray’s V-Twin Synthetic oil is a premium 10W-50 multi-grade synthetic option. High-performance additives provide reliable viscosity, engine component protection and optimal operation. Exclusive Bel-Ray anti-wear chemistry reduces valve train wear and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing. The V-Twin Synthetic oil is ideal in both high temperatures and during cold starts. The synthetic base oils and additives result in a superior film strength and exceptional shear stability, which both improve viscosity protection,

even at high temperatures. At the opposite end of the temperature range, cold starts are both safe and easy. The Bel-Ray Big Twin transmission oil helps a Harley’s transmission function both smoothly and quietly, even making it easier to find neutral. It also reduces first-gear clunk and gear whine. Extreme-pressure chemistry protects gear components from the destructive effects of shock loading, and the oil will retain its properties despite high temperatures and wear. Oxidation protection prevents the temperatures from degrading the oil, and high-viscosity-index base oils maintain their film strength over a wide temperature range. The oil also resists viscosity breakdown caused by gear-shearing action. Bel-Ray V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant is a speciallyformulated, high-quality lubricant built specifically for the primary chaincase of all Big Twin models. It offers improved lubrication compared to motor oil and is ideally suited to withstand high pressures. The V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant also increases the lifespan of the clutch and chain. Exceptional friction additives, less clutch slipping and chatter plus smoother operation in hot stop-and-go traffic are additional perks. Both the transmission oil and the chaincase lubricant are produced in a distinctive red color to help detect any leaks. ■

DEADWOOD CUSTOM CYCLES Building Better in the Black Hills

Photos by Buck Lovell

Parts expert Tyler Hartl mans the counter inside Dead Custom Cycles' well-appointed showroom.

H

ere’s the deal – you’re a talented custom bike builder opening a motorcycle shop in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, the epicenter of the American V-twin community. As such, you boldly make the following mission statement about your fledging business: “To be the premier aftermarket motorcycle shop in the Black Hills.” No doubt a lofty goal, one that Jason Mook laid out when, in 2018, he opened the doors to Deadwood Custom Cycles. DCC wasn’t Mook’s first rodeo. The story actually begins shortly after his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps nearly 20 years ago when he decided to establish Jason’s Garage, Inc., in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A couple years later he loaded up his trusty tools to relocate to one of his favorite cities, Charleston, South Carolina, where he established what amounted to Jason’s Garage 2.0. Throughout those years Mook found time every summer to join the annual migration of bikers to South Dakota’s Black Hills for the most famous motorcycle rally on the planet. And, every summer he managed to fall deeper and deeper in love not only with the rally, but the Black Hills themselves.

36

DECEMBER 2020

“I just loved Deadwood,” Mook recalls. “I always knew it could be a good place to open up a shop. I just loved that little town.” That day came May 1, 2018, when he officially opened Deadwood Custom Cycles at 10 Lee Street in downtown Deadwood, perhaps the most historic business district in the Black Hills. Since that day DCC has become a major source among local Harley-Davidson owners, and every August it’s a popular destination for the countless Harley riders who head for the hills to enjoy the Rally. The shop offers everything from DCC apparel, lubricants and solvents to bolt-on custom parts, service, repair and full-on customization work. Of course, claiming to be the premier aftermarket motorcycle shop in the Black Hills meant having the best aftermarket products that money can buy, so Jason and company signed on with Drag Specialties – again. See, from day-one when the former Marine established his first shop’s beachhead in Virginia, Jason has been a member of the Drag Specialties family. Think of it as a Semper Fi-type relationship enjoyed among bike shops and vendors in America. “My first Drag Rep was Bob Cashwell, and he helped me a lot in organizing my business practices, especially in terms of buying and selling (product),” Mook says.

Deadwood owner Jason Mook and his customized 1999 Road King. Dubbed the Road Fighter, it features a 96-inch Shovelhead, BDL belt drive, Legend Suspension and a long list of other parts from the FatBook.

Most recently, Jason receives the same sort of guidance from his current Drag Rep, Jayson Specht. “As you can imagine, our shop relies a lot on Drag Specialties for products,” Mook explains. He figures the shop produces about 20 custom-bike conversions (from Bobbers and Dyna/FXR hot rods to sporty Sportsters and bodacious Baggers) in the course of a calendar year. “We rely heavily on the FatBook,” he adds. However, in a sense the shop’s productivity is merely window dressing. Inside you’ll find unbridled enthusiasm among the staff and customers alike, especially when the Sturgis Rally is in full swing. “We try to create a destination (during the Rally),” Mook says. For instance, Michelin selected DCC as an outlet for rally goers to buy the company’s new and innovative V-twin tires in 2018, and three marquee Drag Specialties vendors – Feuling, LePera Seats and Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation – set up next to DCC’s historic building along Lee Street during the same rally. No need for the visiting rally goers to go far for refreshments, either. DCC’s own Monkey Bar (“That was Paul Yaffe’s idea!” Mook says) offers easy access to adult beverages and such.

DEADWOOD CUSTOM CYCLES

Deadwood's gasket room that is stocked, of course, with plenty of Drag Specialties parts and accessories.

Inside the shop’s service department you’ll find more than the regular complement of technicians – headed by Mook’s good friend and fellow East Coast refugee Josh Stafford – tending to bikes that are either in need of minor repairs, service or add-ons after the long ride to the Black Hills. Deadwood Custom Cycles also maintains a steady stream of bikes rolling in and out of the shop, many for custom modifications and add-ons, throughout the year. One major focus of the shop’s work, says Mook, is in modifying bikes to make them perform better by improving their acceleration, braking, handling and ride comfort. “The faster the bike,” states Jason, “the better it should handle,” which explains why DCC sells so many engine goodies with names like Bassani Xhaust, Feuling, Hawg Halters, Legend Suspension, Revolution Performance, and S&S Cycle. As Mook puts it, “We really feel that a HarleyDavidson should perform well in every category.” And with that spirit, Deadwood Custom Cycles continues to thrive in a region of the country that practically every diehard American V-twin enthusiast knows and loves — South Dakota’s Black Hills. ■

ire components may not be all that exciting or glamorous compared to some other aftermarket parts, but without them, no one is going anywhere. And, when it comes to tires, customers expect quality and peace of mind, which is why Drag Specialties offers products like the new Drag Specialties Premium heavy-duty inner tubes. Drag Specialties designed these heavy-duty tubes with a full 2mm thickness, compared to a standard tube’s 1.2mm thickness. That added bulk makes them more durable and better able to resist punctures. The sturdy butyl/rubber construction adds to the longevity and resilience of the tubes, too. The tubes are available in the most popular sizes of 16 inches, 19 inches and 21 inches. Each tube comes packaged in the Drag Specialties Premium packaging, which is designed to highlight the quality of the product inside, and to look attractive displayed on the shelf. Drag Specialties also offers high-quality, durable tubes in standard thickness for rim sizes from 15 inches up to 21 inches. The list of available options includes custom sizes for extra-wide wheel applications, making these tubes an ideal choice for bike builders or customers who are upgrading to an oversized tire kit. Of course, Drag Specialties tubes are available with various valve stem configurations to fit most rim options. By offering a range of valve stem types, dealers can get exactly the right size and configuration to fit their needs.

38

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2020

Every valve stem needs a cap, and while the Drag Specialties tubes all come equipped with the standard black rubber cap, there are plenty of aftermarket options for upgrading the look of the cap. It might be the tiniest part that can be customized on a motorcycle, but it helps add to the overall style. Anodized stem caps offer a pop of color in various hues, and both chrome and black contrast-cut styles are designed to offer small but sharply detailed aesthetic upgrades. Drag Specialties has .38 Special valve stem caps for a truly unusual look. Drag Specialties rim strips help round out the setup for new tubes. These high-quality, heavy-duty rubber strips prevent the tube from being chafed by the spoke nipples, and the 10-pack box means they are an easy item to keep on hand in the shop. ■

Pipes for Every Bike

A Complete Range of Indian Exhausts

O

ne of the first things most customers will do with a new bike is swap the OEM exhausts for something that looks and sounds better and wakes up performance. Riders on Indians are no different. Whether it’s a retro-styled touring bike, a Scout, a flattrack inspired FTR or a sport-touring Challenger, that bike is likely to get a new set of pipes. Bassani offers something for every bike in the lineup. Bassani Xhausts have been a V-twin favorite for decades, ever since 1969 when Darryl Bassani first put his name on a set of pipes. Not only do Bassani exhausts have that custom look riders want, they’re built strong to last long, they sound great and they’ll always add a performance kick. And from the Chieftains, Roadmasters, Springfield and Vintage models to the Bobbers, Challengers, FTRs and Scouts, Bassani has the Indians covered.

Bassani offers two versions of its single megaphone slip-on for the FTR 1200 – a High Mount version and a Low Mount version.

Newest in this all-encompassing Bassani lineup are the Stepped-Header True Duals for the newest Indian in the lineup, the sport-touring Challenger. These are classic looking True Dual pipes with a performance surprise thanks to the headpipes being stepped up to 17/8-inches. Bassani also offers slip-ons and a full 2-into-1 Road Rage systems for the Challenger. as well, and a full spectrum of Bassani style-choices like that extends throughout the entire Indian model lineup. Bassani has good looking, great sounding and free-flowing True Duals for the Chieftains, Roadmasters, Springfields and Vintage models, and they are available in black or chrome. For that same range of models, Bassani also has slip-ons that feature big 4-inch mufflers with removable baffles and polished-aluminum slash cut endcaps.

True Duals for the Indian Chieftain Dark Horse

For the Bobber, Scout and Scout 60, Bassani has a range of exhausts, including slash cut 3-inch slip-ons, 2½-inch Fishtail slip-ons and Road Rage stepped header 2-into1s with short or long megaphones, most of them also available in black or chrome. hen it comes to designing and manufacturing handlebars and risers, LA Choppers is in it for the long haul. Whether your customer wants to change the ergonomics by adding a shorter or taller riser, or they just want a different look, LA Choppers has a riser available.

When mounting new risers onto a bike, it is important to take a look at the stock bushings. The bushings will wear out and affect the bike’s handling. LA Choppers created a range of solid riser bushings to alleviate this problem, as well as increase the control and feel while riding.

The goal is always to look great and feel comfortable when modifying a bike. Which is why LA Choppers has pinned the throttle on creating just a massive lineup of risers and riser accessories. Starting with risers themselves, LA Choppers has a variety of super clean options available in straight, pull back, chrome, black, and a variety of heights.

Solid riser bushings

Risers and riser accessories

Pinned risers are something most riders don’t think about when upgrading their handlebars. Put it this way – installing a tall set of ape hangers means there’s a heck of a lot more leverage, which in turn puts more stress on the riser. Stock risers on a touring bike might cause the bar to slip, where a pinned riser has a set screw to hold the bar in place.

If your customer happens to have a riser or T-Bar they already like, but would like for it to be a little taller, LA Choppers offers riser extension kits. These riser extensions are available in 1-inch, 1½-inch and 2-inch heights, for multiple different bar or riser diameters.

Pinned risers

Do your customers want to dress up the look on the bottom of their risers or T-Bars? Check out the deco riser bushing from LA Choppers. It mounts to the bottom of the riser, cleaning up the look between the riser and the triple tree. Available in Gloss Black, Matte Black, and Chrome. ■

Tires for Street and Showroom Performance

M

ichelin launched the first-generation Commander tire for V-Twins two decades ago. Tires have changed a lot since then, but one thing has stayed the same – Michelin’s commitment to giving dealers the support, sales programs, marketing materials and knowledge that help sell V-Twin tires and keep customers happy. Even with all of the support and sales tools, though, Michelin knows that the best way to keep customers happy is to produce a top-quality tire. The Commander tire was a good start, but tire technology and V-Twin capabilities have improved a lot in the past 20 years. That first iteration has evolved into the Michelin Commander III Cruiser and Touring tires, which blend features to provide wet grip performance and outstanding mileage.

Michelin is ready and able to support dealers with a wide range of sales materials, including counter mats that show fitments, features and benefits. It’s a handy reference tool for your parts counter employees.

For a long time, maximizing wet grip often came at the expense of a tire’s tread life or longevity. It simply wasn’t possible to have the best of both worlds. An extensive amount of research, development and detailed feedback from riders has

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

That feedback from riders was an integral part of the Commander III’s development. Michelin conducted extensive interviews with dealers and riders alike, visiting shops, bike shows and other events to find out what V-Twin riders in North America expected from a tire. Independent companies organized focus groups to gather further feedback. All of that information was sent to the tire developers in Michelin’s Worldwide Research Center in Ladoux, France, where the consumer feedback was combined with Michelin’s ongoing research. Michelin has achieved this great wet grip and miles-of-longevity design in the Commander III thanks in part to combining a silica-infused tread rubber with deep tread grooves. The silica improves the stickiness of the tire for better grip, even when riding on wet roads or on areas of the tire that have a low groove ratio.

MICHELIN

The grooves on the Michelin Commander III tires are wider and deeper than those on the Commander II to enhance water evacuation. This is especially important for the front tire, where most of the water dispersion takes place.

Michelin Commander III has a flatter profile, which creates a larger contact patch and improves the distribution of stress where, quite literally, the rubber meets the road.

Commander III Cruiser tires

The silica used in the Commander III is an all-new formulation, but the history of its use in Michelin tires dates all the way back to 1985. Like a lot of Michelin technology, a silica compound was first developed for racing. What started as technology in a GP 500 tire became part of passenger car and truck tires before returning to its original home in a motorcycle tire. Silica offers stability for touring riders in all-weather situations and for cruiser riders who want instant grip for confidence on shorter rides. The grooves on the Michelin Commander III tires are wider and deeper than those on the Commander II to enhance water evacuation. This is especially important for the front tire, where most of the water dispersion takes place. At the same time, the biting edges of the grooves help aid the tire’s grip on the road. The silica and groove combination provide much better wet traction compared to the previous generation of the tire. The contact patch is another key component to optimizing a tire’s grip on the road, but Michelin has also designed the Commander III’s contact patch to increase the tire’s longevity. Compared to the Commander II, the

Reducing the stress differential around the contact patch allows the tire to work over a longer period. The strain on any given point of the contact patch is diminished, so the tire as a whole will last longer. In fact, the Commander III gives riders a few thousand more miles than the previous generation, offering V-Twin riders both increased value and increased confidence. Michelin proved this increased longevity by conducting independent testing in Texas last year, where the Commander III really showed off its high-mileage prowess. Both the Michelin Commander III Cruiser and Touring tires feature distinctive tread patterns and Michelin’s patented “velvet” sidewall styling, developed with Michelin Premium Touch Technology. These attributes combine to give the Commander III a unique, but classic look, ideal for pairing with the styling of V-Twins. The Michelin Commander III is available in 27 sizes with specific fitments for both Cruiser and Touring platforms. Michelin encourages dealers to work with their Drag rep to identify the top-selling sizes and order the appropriate inventory to ensure tires are on hand and ready to mount when a customer rolls in. Your Drag rep can also ensure that you have all the latest display materials, from tire shoes to racks, signage, window stickers and current literature that highlights the product range and features. ■

Torque Monster

The New 540 Cam Chest Kits S&S Cycle’s new Cam Chest Kit is a complete bolt-in package that also includes the company’s 540 camshaft, which is designed to give Milwaukee-Eight Touring bikes buckets of stump-pulling torque.

In many internal-combustion-related circles, horsepower gets all the bragging rights and glory, but savvy riders know that torque is what gets all the grunt work done, especially with big, fully loaded Touring machines. As the centerpiece of the all-in-one kit, S&S Cycles’ new 540 cam shaft is just the ticket for building torque in the lower end of the rpm range and perfect for letting riders rocket onto an interstate on-ramp and quickly accelerate that heavy Bagger up to highway speeds. S&S Cycle created the 540 cam specifically for M8-powered bikes, and it is also designed to work with the company’s 124-inch and 128-inch big-bore kits. This combination will definitely place heavy duty torque down low, but also produce respectable horsepower numbers across the rpm range. In fact, on a conservative 124-inch build S&S put together, the dyno chart tells the tale – a bump up to 130+ lb ft compared to the stock number of 77 lb ft.

The dyno numbers tell the tale. With S&S Cycles’ new Cam Chest Kit and 540 you’re your Touring bike customers can add the kind of torque that riders want, especially in the low rpm range.

M

ost of your customers likely view their winter hiatus from riding with a touch of sadness, so it’s often your job to let them know this downtime is the perfect chance to prep for the spring riding season. For the Harley-Davidson rider looking for a winter upgrade, motor mods courtesy of S&S Cycle are always a popular go-to. This season you can point them toward an S&S Cycle Cam Chest Kit that will give them a satisfying helping of stump-pulling torque with their first handful of throttle. The new 540 Cam Chest kit is designed specifically for the big bore Milwaukee-Eight platform (124 inches and larger) and includes everything necessary to pack that engine with buckets of torque.

These kits are available with either gear or chain drive cams and all the matched parts — High Flow oil pump/ cam plate, Quickee Pushrods, S&S Precision Tappets, tappet cuffs, and valve springs. When buying the kit, your customers will not only get a major engine upgrade, they’ll get it at a cost savings over buying all the parts individually. Value packed grunt? What serious V-Twin junky wouldn’t want that? As expected from S&S Cycle, all the parts are engineered and built with the same focus on function and performance as the company’s entire range of products. The oil pump helps increase oil flow by 44 percent on the supply side and 58 percent on scavenge. It also has debris screens in both scavenge pickups, a magnet in the cam chest side to prevent debris from mucking things up, and the pressure relief valve is adjustable with the unit installed in the engine. The kit also includes Precision Tappets that are hand assembled to exacting tolerances, and are designed to reduce valvetrain noise and feature superior high rpm performance. These are paired with tappet cuffs that are hard anodized and made from billet aluminum to eliminate tappet rotation. With S&S Cycles’ new all inclusive 540 Cam Chest Kit, your customers will be ready to rip come those first signs of spring. ■

RISERS

Rising to the Occasion Proudly Made in the USA

THRASHIN Supply’s bar risers are machined from super strong domestic 6061 aluminum and paired with top-quality (and locally sourced) ARP hardware. The black finish is hard anodized and includes an anti-fade agent to keep it from graying out in the sun. Likewise, THRASHIN’s chrome finish is triple-nickel plated (known as triple chrome) for a durable shine that will never flake off. So, whether your customers go with subdued black or flashy chrome, they can rest easy knowing their new parts will stay looking fresh for years to come. Adding to the style factor, THRASHIN’s risers and top clamps feature relief-cut logos and detailing, including “Made in America” proudly etched on the inside of the riser masts. I

n all likelihood, your customers’ bikes are a huge point of pride for them. And if that’s the case, why not point them toward components that are built with pride, right here in the USA? THRASHIN Supply is a homegrown company with a range of high-quality parts and accessories for your customers’ Harley-Davidsons, including an impressive lineup of bar risers, all of which are manufactured in Los Angeles, California. Whether it’s for style, more comfort, or both, THRASHIN Supply’s bar risers offer enough variety to suit any rider’s needs. Available in 6-inch and 8-inch straight options and 6½-inch and 9½-inch pullback designs, these bar risers work with any standard 1-inch handlebar and fit all models with a 3½-inch center-on-center bolt spacing. That includes the majority of Harley models dating back to the late 1980s.

THRASHIN’s top clamps are angled at 35 degrees for both straight and pulled back risers. This gives the parts a streamlined look as well as a more relaxed feel. And, on the risers designed for the 2018 to 2019 Softail Street Bob and Break Out, the top-clamp angle positions the bikes’ stock digital gauges at a comfortable viewing angle. Once your customers have selected the height, style, and finish that appeals to them, they can further refine things with a set of riser extensions, which are offered in ½-inch and 1-inch thicknesses and let clients fine-tune the height of any of the riser kits. Extension kits include the necessary grade 8 bolts for an easy install, with no run to the hardware store required. THRASHIN also offers billet brake and clutch perch clamps to complete the aesthetic. THRASHIN Supply Co. is a business built on a passion for functional, unique and attractive parts. If you’re looking for parts that your customers can rely on and be proud of, point them toward THRASHIN. ■

See-Through Covers to Bring the Inside Out

T

here is a lot going on inside an engine. Wouldn’t it be exciting to see some of it? With Performance Machine’s Vision Series engine covers your customers get custom style points plus a look inside their engines. It’s like one of those cutaways you see at trade shows, but on a running motor and a rideable bike. Starting at the intake, the Vision Series offers an *air filter assembly that transforms what is normally an uninteresting area of the engine and turns it into a spectacle. Available for Harley’s Evo, Twin Cam, and Milwaukee-Eight engines, the Vision Series air cleaners utilize a large, crystal-clear polycarbonate lens to provide a window into the heart of the engine’s intake. A machined-aluminum bezel holds the lens in place and frames a premium oiled-cotton K&N air filter that provides increased airflow over stock, so not only does the Vision air cleaner look great, it’s a great performance upgrade as well. These stylish see-through air filter assemblies are available for cable-throttle bikes as well as the latest ride-by-wire machines, and all kits come with chrome hardware and all required gaskets for an easy install. Color options include Contrast Cut, Chrome, and Black Ops finishes to compliment any bike’s look. Moving to the bottom end of the engine, things start to get really exciting as the Vision Series covers offer a glimpse of spinning, pivoting, and rotating engine parts that can normally only be seen when an engine is disassembled.

With Performance Machine’s unique range of Vision Series engine covers, your customers can put the internal workings of their Harley-Davidson engines on display for all the world to see.

For generations, swapping the derby cover has been a prime way to personalize a bike. With the Vision Series derby cover, your customers can take this commonly customized area to the next level. The see-through cover exposes the clutch basket spinning away, and you can watch the pressure plate rise as you pull the clutch lever. On the other side of the engine, the Vision Series clutch cover grants visual access to the clutch’s actuator arm. The clutch-cable end no longer disappears into the engine’s dark depths, it’s now right there for everyone to see. Mystery revealed! Similarly, the windowed transmission and cam cover put rotating, reciprocating parts on display for all to see. As with the air filter assembly, these engine covers utilize a heavy duty polycarbonate lens sealed to a carefully machined aluminum frame. Kits come with all needed hardware and quality gaskets, so while your customers are liable to see their favorite motor oil splashing around behind the cover, they won’t see any leaking out. As with all Performance Machine products, the Vision Series engine covers are made in the company’s 60,000 square-foot facility in La Palma, California. ■

Racing-Inspired Performance Parts for Baggers

Here’s Slyfox founder Alex Fox and the 2017 Road Glide he built for the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers invitational race after hard day of testing at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

A

s someone who grew up around motorsports, Alex Fox knows that one of the best places to develop new street parts is on the racetrack. If a part can stand up to the competition on the track, then it’s tough enough for daily rides. Fox has taken this competition outlook and applied it to Baggers. His Slyfox brand offers high-performance Bagger parts designed to reduce weight, handle better and, of course, look great. Every Slyfox part is made in the USA, and they are only available through Drag Specialties.

The Slyfox 49mm triple clamp is available in both raw aluminum and black anodized, and is a direct OEM replacement.

SEATS

Comfort and Style Seats for Every Ride

The Standard Touring seat gives riders a 16-inch wide plush platform, scooped to match the basic position of the stock Fat Bob saddle, but designed to offer more comfort. Considering longdistance saddles are Mustang’s bread and butter, the company knows the discerning Touring rider wants options.

Available with or without a built-in driver backrest, Mustang’s Wide Tripper for 2018-up Softails is now offered in signature diamond stitching

On the other end of the spectrum is the Tripper Fastback, a one-piece unit that sets off the muscle-bound, smooth lines of the Fat Bob while still being 3 inches wider than the stock piece.

The Tripper Fastback is 3 inches wider than stock and balances sporty low-profile styling with excellent lumbar support

As Goldilocks taught us, sometimes compromise is just right. That’s where the Wide Tripper fits in, cut to give Fat Bob customers the low-slung look that fits the bike, and designed to keep riders comfortable all day. It’s available with or without a built-in receiver for a backrest that is adjustable and easily removable. A separate passenger seat is about 2½ inches narrower than the rider’s and has all of the accents to match. For 2020 the Wide Tripper can be had in Mustang’s signature diamond-stitch pattern, in either black or brown.

Mustang’s Standard Touring Solo with driver backrest transforms the Fat Bob into a nimble long-distance cruiser

Mustang seats are classified as Max, Mid or Low profile. The options for Fat Bobs are indicative of the overall lineup in general, built for variety but with comfort in mind. All other Milwaukee-Eight Softail models (aside from FXDR) have a similar selection available.

S

eats are serious business at Mustang. For decades now, in a hundred-year old building along a small river in central Massachusetts, Mustang has focused on making motorcycle seats with careful craftsmanship. The heart of the American V-Twin market is where Mustang spends most of its time working, and the spread of products backs it up. A perfect example is the lineup made for 2018 to current Harley-Davidson Fat Bob models.

56

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

The Standard Touring option is available as a solo piece or with a passenger perch to match. For even more support the seat is offered with a rider backrest option and a special, recessed passenger module to ensure everything fits.

DECEMBER 2020

In general, Low-profile seats are more likely to be single two-up or solo units that do not have the option of a rider’s backrest. Predictably, Max-profile options are made for the long haul, with the largest selection of lumbar support and comfort options. Mid-profile splits the difference, with the Wide Tripper laying claim as the only Mid-profile selection with an optional backrest. Mustang uses a proprietary polyurethane foam, with base plates made of steel or marine-grade fiberglass, and covered with water-resistant, synthetic leather. ■

A Guide to Choosing the Right Fluids

T

here are a lot of universal fit parts on the market, but oil is not one of them. As motor oil has become more and more of a precise science, it has become like any other aftermarket part that is designed specifically for certain makes and models. Filling up a reservoir with the wrong oil is like installing the wrong replacement part – things just aren’t going to work as well. To help dealers get the right oil for the right vehicle, LIQUI MOLY has built an easy online oil guide. The guide has a dedicated powersports section, where users can select the year, make and model of the vehicle. LIQUI MOLY takes care of the rest, displaying the oils that are compatible with that particular vehicle. The oils are conveniently sorted under headers that indicate the recommended oil change

LIQUI MOLY’s online oil guide makes the process of choosing the right products much easier for dealers, customers and Drag reps. Just enter the make, model and specific bike and up pops a list of the correct oils for that machine.

LIQUI MOLY has a range of oils for Harley-Davidson models, including the HD Classic SAE 50 for classic bikes, HD Synth 20W50 and Motorbike 4T 20W-50 Street oil for newer Harleys.

In addition to oil, the LIQUI MOLY online oil guide also includes other fluids that will best fit the selected vehicle, with options for things like brake fluid, coolant, chain lube and recommended additives. With dozens of different oils available for powersports vehicles, not to mention a long list of other fluids and lubricants, the online oil guide makes the process of choosing the right products much easier for dealers, customers and Drag reps.

The LIQUI MOLY HD Synth 20W-50 street oil is best for newer Harleys, both air-cooled and water-cooled. This fully synthetic motor oil features a blend of select base oils and high-quality additive components. Altogether, the formula ensures optimum lubrication, outstanding engine cleanliness and excellent friction in all operating conditions.

When it comes to Harley-Davidson models, LIQUI MOLY has two oils with very different applications. The HD Classic SAE 50 oil is designed for use in classic motorcycles, with an emphasis on classic Harleys. Attracting Attention New Lights and Turn Signals

Custom Dynamic’s Low Profile LED Fender Lights for Tri Glide and Street Glide Trike models offer more than 65 dual-intensity red LEDs per unit – plenty of extra visibility out on the road.

ustom Dynamics has been hard at work this year, giving Harley-Davidson riders more options than ever when it comes to adding lighting elements to a bike. Following a big midseason product launch, Custom Dynamics has continued introducing new lighting solutions. The latest to join the lineup are Low Profile LED Fender Lights for Tri Glide models and dynamic LED windshield trim with sequential turn signals for both Road Glide and Batwing fairings. These lighting options might be new, but they share a lot in common with the Custom Dynamics products that dealers are already familiar with. Each one is carefully designed to increase a rider’s visibility to others while adding a sleek, modern look to the bike. As customers have come to expect with Custom Dynamics products, these all feature plug-and-play installation to make getting a lighting upgrade as quick and easy as possible. There’s no need to fuss with complicated wiring or any drilling. And, as always, these new lights are all covered by the Custom Dynamics Lifetime LED Warranty so customers can ride with peace of mind. The Low Profile LED Fender Lights for Tri Glide and Street Glide Trike models offer more than 65 dual-intensity red LEDs per unit. These fender lights are extremely low-profile, but their small size offers extreme brilliance thanks to all of those LEDs. Riders can choose a red lens or a smoked lens to top it all off. Run, brake and turn signal function provides a highly visible addition to the rear end of the bike, and each light bar simply mounts to the bottom of the rear fenders via pre-installed tape. The

BRAKE ROTORS

The Scientific Method Shaping a New Brake Rotor

As a performanceoriented company, Galfer designs products first and foremost for the track. That technology gleaned from extensive race testing and use is then applied to street use, something your V-Twin customers will notice out on the road when riding with the CUBIQ rotors.

B

raking technology relies on science to find the right shapes and materials to help bikes stop better, and Galfer is offering an advanced science course with its new CUBIQ® rotor.

The CUBIQ’s braking track even looks like something you might see in a science textbook since its shape resembles the crystalline structure of steel molecules. The hexagon styling wasn’t designed that way just for looks. Galfer says that the new CUBIQ is its lightest highest performing rotor in its lineup. The CUBIQ’s design is a natural evolution of Galfer’s famous WAVE® rotor. This latest style reflects the increased power and size of modern motorcycles – as bikes become more capable, the braking system has to be up to the challenge. This increase in the size and capability of motorcycles has certainly been seen in the V-Twin market, and the Galfer CUBIQ rotor is now available in a wide range of Harley-Davidson applications, with a sizing list that even surpasses the brand’s WAVE rotors. The geometry of the CUBIQ rotor came about through simulation modeling, as Galfer engineers used the latest technology to optimize the mass-heat dissipation ratio of the rotor. What that means is that heat is significantly reduced while cooling is enhanced. The CUBIQ’s unique shape increases the perimeter of the rotor, which provides a larger cooling surface for

62

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2020

better heat dissipation. At the same time, the design also optimizes the wear resistance of the brake pads for extended use and predictability. Using 420 virgin un-recycled stainless steel, the CUBIQ’s dramatic design is laser cut, not stamped, for ultimate precision. The rotors are also parallel double disc ground to ensure a true parallel surface. Thanks to the combination of reduced weight and better cooling, a bike with CUBIQ rotors gets a boost in performance while the rider gets a boost in braking confidence. The bike is easier to maneuver compared to the performance characteristics of a much heavier stock rotor. In fact, the CUBIQ is 40 percent lighter than some stock rotors, so the weight savings makes a big difference when it comes to handling characteristics. Making a radically different rotor like the CUBIQ is no easy task, and there are no easy shortcuts. First, the CUBIQ had to beat a long list of other rotor designs in computer testing models. Virtual simulations showed that the CUBIQ was the clear design winner. Once the design was chosen, it was time for the CUBIQ to go from idea to prototype. Galfer’s manufacturing facility in Spain is less than one mile from the Circuit de BarcelonaCatalunya. That means Galfer was able to test the CUBIQ in its own backyard in tandem with a professional race team that outfitted its fleet with the prototype rotors.

With the new CUBIQ rotor, riders who turn their V-Twins into performance bikes will appreciate the better cooling, increased stopping power, lowered rotational mass and other race-influenced features and benefits.

Some might argue that it is counterintuitive to use track-developed products on V-Twins, but the team at Galfer has a very different philosophy. As a performance-oriented company, Galfer designs products first and foremost for the track, and then translates that technology to the street. While not all products make that transition easily, braking components do. Street riders, especially those who have a more aggressive riding style, benefit from having such a high-performance braking setup. The better cooling, increased stopping power, lowered rotational mass and other attributes all add up to a more confident ride. Riders who turn their V-Twins into performance bikes are especially eager to take advantage of an upgraded braking system. â–

During testing, it quickly became evident that the CUBIQ rotors avoided the heat buildup often seen in braking systems. The weight reduction also made turn-in easier for the riders. The test was a success, and the CUBIQ moved on to the production phase.

Four Corners Motorcycle Rally 2020 RALLYING IN THE TIME OF CORONA Story by Marilyn Stemp / Photos by Timmi Lynn and Four Corners Motorcycle Rally/Justin George

Competitors duked it out for glory and bragging rights at the Hooligan Dirt Dash held at the La Plata County fairgrounds.

The bike show in the parking lot of Durango HarleyDavidson attracted entires that ran the style gamut — from low-slung cruisers to high-horsepower Performance Baggers.

L

ike many events in 2020, the 28th annual Four Corners Motorcycle Rally, held September 4-6 in Durango, CO, faced challenges. However, according to Durango Harley-Davidson owner and Rally partner, Trevor Bird, there was an upside. “This year with events at Sky Ute Casino and downtown canceled, Durango Harley-Davidson felt like the heart of the rally,” Bird says. “People from all over the country came and were in the best spirits, grateful to have an opportunity to get out and ride.” In fact, along the lines of other reports of impressive powersports sales during the pandemic, the Drag Specialties dealership hit several milestones over rally weekend, hitting peak apparel sales and marking a high point in motorcycle sales for the most units retailed at the dealership in a single day. “We invested a lot in safety and sanitation, and I told my

team to be respectful and follow the rules,” Bird says. “We went out of our way and it paid off.” All weekend, the dealership was hopping with activities and vendors. Noted Drag vendors such as Alloy Art, Bassani, Klock Werks, Legend Suspensions, Saddlemen and Speed Merchant set up shop at the dealership. “My 2017 Lowrider has parts from some of these great companies,” said Bird. “Our local customers don’t usually get the opportunity to talk to these reps so it’s a real service to have them here.” A poker chip run to benefit veterans’ charities proved to be an ideal socially distanced activity. Riders checked in at Durango Harley-Davidson and enjoyed amazing scenery along the Million Dollar Highway and throughout the beautiful southwest on the way to the final stop at Silverton Harley-Davidson. Said one rider from New Mexico, “It was a good turnout at the dealership. There were more vendors than last year.” As for how he managed social distancing: “I did the full San

Bird said it was the highlight of the weekend. “I keep learning more about Ben, his life and his legacy. We’re so honored to have his input and friendship.”

Spectators at the Hooligan Dirt Dash races were a fraction of last year’s number, and that was by design. However, race action actually expanded to two nights instead of one.

With the Covid-colored 2020 rally now in the rear view mirror, plans are already afoot for the 29th Four Corners Motorcycle Rally in 2021. Bird says that many of the rally’s regular features are planning a return, and that his dealership is looking to do things even bigger than before. He called this year’s event a big success, especially in light of the ongoing pandemic.

Another first-time feature: Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, one of two founders of the Rally, was inducted as the inaugural member of the Four Corners Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the rally-only Durango Drive-in, set up in the lot of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Films ran each evening to be enjoyed by riders and locals alike. After a video about Senator Nighthorse’s remarkable career, he graciously accepted the honor, along with a hand-crafted ring. Within minutes, everyone settled in properly distanced to watch Easy Rider on the big screen.

“Our real measure of success for this year came yesterday, two weeks since everyone left town,” Bird says. “We probably saw 5,000 people come through our lot over the weekend and among all of my staff, all of our team, no one has tested positive. Everyone is healthy and happy.” ■

Parts for a Complete Custom Look

T

he end of the calendar year is approaching, and that means it’s also nearing the end of riding season for many. With those bikes in storage and riding on hiatus, many of your customers will be looking to some desired upgrades to their bikes, a chance to add those aftermarket parts and accessories they’ve been ogling all year. This is the chance for savvy dealers to step in with advice – and the parts found inside the FatBook and OldBook – to help guide their customers’ winter-time projects. As many dealers and seasoned bike builders know, a custom Harley-Davidson greatly benefits from a style theme, a uniform composition of parts and components to create a harmonious blend that’s pleasing to the eye. Now here’s where your parts salesperson gets some helpful guidance and assistance of their own. We’re talking about RC Components’ line of style-related custom parts carried by Drag Specialties. RC’s custom parts, ranging from wheels to brake components to belt-drive pulleys to air cleaners, are catalogued and in stock for Harley owners to create their own style theme. Start with the wheels, where RC Components offers stylish patterns to fit most 2014 to 2019 Harley models. All wheels are built using single-piece, dropforged billet aluminum, and CNC machined into 10 distinct styles, including the Drifter, Exile, Illusion, Majestic, Majestic Eclipse, Nitro, Recoil, Revolt, Savage, and Savage Eclipse. Front and rear wheels are available in various diameter sizes ranging from 16-inch through 26-inch fronts, and 16-inch, 17-inch and 18-inch rears. All are manufactured in the USA, and are available in various finishes, including chrome. RC Components also offers corresponding replacement rotors in those 10 styles, as well as matching rear belt pulleys. Customers wishing to retain their bike’s OEM calipers can utilize RC’s matching front custom brake adapters. Chromed hardware fasteners are also available, making for a complete turnkey modification. Finally RC Components offers a range of CNC-machined *air cleaner bodies to match the company’s custom wheels. Each air cleaner assembly includes a K&N filtering element, backing plate with built-in breather, hardware, and gaskets. And, like all of RC’s components, they’re made in the USA. ■

With RC Components’ range of parts and accessories, your customers can have a unified custom look that includes wheels, brake rotors, belt pulleys and *air cleaners. The Illusion design is shown here.

Quick-to-Install Tall Handlebars

T

he old saying, “If it were easy, everyone would do it,” takes on a whole new meaning when describing Fat Baggers, Inc.’s EZ Install handlebars.

Despite the EZ name, developing these bars wasn’t so easy to do. It took some crafty design work and innovative engineering to create a set of high-rise handlebars that quickly and easily mount to most late-model HarleyDavidsons. Initially, the EZ concept resulted in the Pointed Top and Round Top EZ Install handlebars, models introduced earlier this year that have their own distinctive styling features. Those two models now are joined by Fat Baggers’ new Flat Top EZ Install handlebar. The names of all three EZ models pretty much describe the bars themselves, and the new Flat Top is most certainly identifiable because its top point — the critical elbow bend at the top of the bars – is flat. This is also where Fat Baggers cleverly incorporates a spacious CNC machine-cut cavity so that a Harley’s internal handlebar wiring harness quickly and easily routes through the bars. And, like the Pointed Top and Round Top, the new Flat Top is available in either 1¼-inch or 1½-inch diameter tubing with stout 0.120-inch wall thickness. Handlebar heights range from 10 inches to 16 inches for the smaller diameter Flat Tops, and 12 inches to 16 inches for the fatter version. And, like the two original EZ models, the Flat Top comes in either a polished chrome or a black powder coat finish, with all bars being made in the USA by Fat Baggers, Inc. Assembly and installation are quick and easy, too. The mandrel-bent two-piece handlebars inter-connect and bolt together at the bottom, assuring a clean and strong singlepiece assembly when mounted. The revolutionary design also means the unassembled bars are delivered in a compact package for reduced shipping costs, and consumes minimal display or storage space at the dealership. Many Drag Specialties dealers take advantage of Fat Bagger’s EZ Install Kits (available separately) for a quick and easy installation of the handlebar’s internal wiring. EZ Install Kits include the necessary components to install the handlebars for specified Harley models, with individual components determined by the bar’s selected rise height. For instance, some EZ kits include brake line extension, clutch line and cable extension, and a wiring harness. Others may have fewer components, depending on the specified handlebar height. Also available are upgraded components such as smooth black braided lines, vinyl cable extensions or braided stainless lines and cable extensions to further personalize a bike’s modification. ■

Building Power and Putting it to the Ground

Trask’s Assault 2-into-1 exhaust systems are a good choice for your customers who want to increase horsepower and torque, and add a pipe that offers a super clean, custom look.

H

arley-Davidson performance builders have turned to 2-into-1 exhaust systems for years, and for good reason. The scavenging effect of these systems, the power potential of a 2-into-1 with its pipes and collector actually pulling the exhaust out of each cylinder, is tough to beat when it comes to increasing horsepower and torque. Performance builders also know it’s tough to beat a big, strong chain when it comes to sending all that new, hot-rodded V-Twin power back to the rear wheel. Riders demanding big power from their Harley-Davidsons also demand a bulletproof transfer of that power and as good as an OEM belt might be it’s no match for a chain. Not surprising, Trask Performance has all of this and it’s in the FatBook. Long known for its Assault Series powerhouse customs, Trask’s *Assault 2-into-1 exhaust systems are available for most models in the Harley lineup. Trask also has chain-drive conversions needed to strengthen and upgrade the drivetrain on 2009 through 2020 cush-drive FL Touring models. They’re available with a variety of gearing ratios, including a new 51-tooth kit that’s comparable to the final-drive gearing of that stock Harley-Davidson belt-drive setup. All these performance upgrades, pipes to build power and chain-drives to harness it, look great, too. Those Traskbuilt Assault Series bikes were show stoppers, remember? The exhausts are dyno-proven, solidly built from TIGwelded 16-gauges stainless steel, with double slip-fit and gusseted connections. They feature clean, simple lines that are sure to complement any bike they’re installed on. They are available with a plain, brushed stainless steel

They’re tough and long lasting, and the sprockets are heat-treated and custom-coated for durability. The aluminum carriers are crafted from 6061-T6 aluminum, and they look as good as they perform. A 25-tooth front sprocket can be matched with a 54-tooth, 52-tooth or a new 51-tooth rear sprocket with a high-quality Z-rated O-ring chain, available separately, completing the kit. ■

Comfort and Control Adjustable Handlebars

With Klock Werks’ Klip Hanger handlebars, customers have a wide range of adjustability to get the steering ergonomics just right for riders of all sizes.

L

ife behind bars for your Harley-Davidson riding customers can be good – if their bikes’ handlebars are positioned properly. Obtaining proper positioning means that the stretch to reach the handgrips won’t tax the rider’s torso, and that the bar’s width is proportionate to the rider’s physical size. Too much or too little of a spread can affect how much or how little control the rider has concerning the bike’s steering and handling, not to mention comfort. Bar height plays a role, too. Having all the right dimensions in a set of conventional steel-tube handlebars can be a hit or miss thing. Other than adjusting axial rotation, the rider is generally stuck with what the bars offer in terms of rider ergonomics. The solution is adjustable handlebars, and Klock Werks has a formula worked out and ready to go with essentially five models to choose from. The Klock Werks Five includes Ergo Bars, Ergo Back Bars, Ergo Up Bars, Klip Hangers and Pullback Klip Hangers. The quintet includes two baseline models – the Ergo Bars and the Klip Hangers – that splinter off into variations that are more narrowly focused in design and intent to suit most any Harley rider. For instance, the Ergo Back Bars offer a closer reach for shorter riders, and Ergo Up Bars are for riders with taller torsos who generally require slightly higher handgrip placement. Likewise, the Pullback Klip Hangers offer slightly more pull back towards the rider than that of the standard Klip Hanger.

70

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2020

Each of the five handlebar models offer adjustability for bar height, corresponding a rider’s reach with the handgrip’s spread. The handgrips also can be adjusted for optimum hand placement, including pullback and such to suit tall and shorter riders alike. All bars accept stock Harley-Davidson controls, housings, cable and wiring, so they’re plug-and-play and ready to mount. Optional extended wiring kits are also available for 2014 to 2020 Harley-Davidson models. In addition, bars are predrilled and slotted for internal wiring, and notched for throttle-by-wire applications. The Klock Werks handlebars also accept Harley heated handgrips, and come in Show Chrome or Black finishes. Klip Hanger models also include chromed and domed bar end plugs for a fully finished appearance. And, naturally, the Klock Werks bars are made in the USA. ■

Heavy-Duty Billet Clutch Baskets

A

s the gateway between the crank and the final drive, the clutch basket is a vital part of every engine’s drivetrain. So whether your customers’ stock Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight basket has become worn and notched, or if they are just looking for an aftermarket option to complement their big-power build, Rekluse’s billet clutch baskets are just the ticket. Engineered for the 2017 and later Milwaukee-Eight platform, the M8 basket is a premium piece from start to finish. Built by Rekluse, a company with a total dedication to clutch performance, the new M8 basket is designed to be stronger than stock and withstand over 200 ft.-lb. of torque, making it a perfect match for modified engines. The basket’s increased strength comes from the fact that the entire assembly is machined from a solid puck of billet aluminum. Once formed, the basket is hard anodized to provide increased durability against notching. The careful machining process provides a trued rotation of the basket for perfect concentricity and balance, while hardened surfaces and tightly controlled tolerances ensure smooth operation, less drag and reduced clutch noise.

hile working as a machinist in the aerospace industry, Jim Thiessen developed a knack for fixing motorcycles with high-quality parts. By the late 1970s he was fully dedicated to serving V-Twin customers, and ever since then there has been no job too large or small for JIMS ingenuity.

On the topic of big jobs, JIMS is also now offering a set of hardware organizers for Milwaukee-Eight engines as well, made from 13-gauge aluminum-magnesium alloy. The four stands can be ordered as a set or individually – one each for top end, cam chest, transmission, and primary – and are indexed to hold each piece of hardware during disassembly.

Take as an example, the company’s new oil pump alignment tool, which helps assemble the cam chest on Milwaukee-Eight engines properly. One mechanic taking on the job means making sure the cam support plate correctly interacts with the oil pump, gerotors, pump cover and pinion shaft, while aligning the O-ring in the crankcase. It’s a lot to juggle, and specifically the job of this new tool to help one person tackle it efficiently.

A new magnetic storage feature helps capture slip-fit dowels, and the stands nest within each other for efficient storage. Flip the stand on its side to apply thread lock when reassembling, or check the silkscreened info on top for commonly used torque specs. ■

A Seat for Adventurous Riders

T

he word adventure can mean different things depending on the type of riding you like to do. When it comes to the TailWhip seat for HarleyDavidson Dynas, LePera Motorcycle Seats has designed a versatile seat for Harley riders who crave an adventurous, adrenaline-fueled style of riding. Like the KickFlip seat, the TailWhip gives riders a platform for their own creative style. Its name is inspired by the seat design, which features a whipped-up tail that adds style as well as support for both the rider and passenger. Of course, no one wants to show off all the time, which is why LePera designed the TailWhip to be as comfortable as it is edgy. The TailWhip comes in three different finishes, including Basket Weave, Double Diamond and Pleated, all made with a durable BikerTec cover. Although the TailWhip is built for riders who like to push the limits of what a motorcycle can do, the construction methods and materials are based in LePera’s traditional craftsmanship, which has been a hallmark of the company for more than 40 years.

The TailWhip from LePera Motorcycle Seats features a unique shape that gives riders a platform for their own creative riding styles. The TailWhip is also as comfortable as it is edgy.

Each LePera seat begins with a steel base, which ensures a perfect, contoured fit on the motorcycle. The natural dampening characteristics and tough-but-beautiful powder-coated surface are enhanced by a carpeted bottom. On top of the steel base plate, LePera’s specially-poured and formulated high-density Marathon molded foam gives the TailWhip its unique shape as well as comfort, so a rider feels good whether they are on the road or showing off. ■

Forged Piston Kits

T

he Milwaukee-Eight engine may be HarleyDavidson’s latest and greatest, but just because it’s new doesn’t mean your customers won’t want to modify it. And when they do, JE Pistons is there to help them dial their M8s up to 11 with its HD M8 piston kits. Designed and manufactured in America with the same technical skill, attention to detail, and quality materials that have made JE famous, the HD M8 pistons boast a laundry list of impressive features and benefits. Chief among them? More performance. Available in a variety of bore and stroke options for engines from 107 to 128 cubic inches, these new M8 slugs push the compression ratio up a full point from the stock 10.0:1 to 11.0:1. More compression is a tried and true technique for extracting more power out of an engine, and JE incorporates it into each M8 piston, regardless of bore size. To ensure reliability, JE’s pistons are forged from premium 2618-T6 aluminum using a variety of sophisticated techniques. An attentive eye will notice the double

broaching in the wrist-pin bores that provides extra lubrication to this critical area, radiused machining that shaves weight while preserving strength, and a refined accumulator groove to ensure proper piston ring behavior. Then, of course, there’s the low-friction pistonskirt coating that helps reduce wear and engine noise. JE’s HD M8 piston kits offer all this plus the pride of knowing that every part – from the pistons to the box they come in – is made in America. ■

Run the Reaper 472 All-Around Camshaft Performance

T

he Reaper 472 is one of Feuling Parts’ most popular camshafts for Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engines. It’s just one of seven different Reaper camshaft grinds, all of which provide a wide range of performance upgrades for the M8 motors. Developed for your M8 customers who are looking for a little more oomph than the Feuling 465, but still want an easy bolt-in swap, the 472 is that and more. With the 472, a great bottom-end with plenty of low-rpm pull is coupled with substantial gains above 2,800 rpm. Additionally, this allaround performer responds well to all levels of engine mods. It’s a cam ready to work with everything from free-flowing exhausts and deep-breathing intakes, to big-bore kits and highcompression pistons. It offers a great power boost for 117-inch M8s, and in 114-inch MilwaukeeEights it’ll deliver a higher-rpm powerband than the Feuling cam right below it, the 465. The Feuling 472 doesn’t require any special valve springs either, although for a smoother, quieter valvetrain they’re certainly recommended. While the 472 is available as a stand-alone camshaft, including it as part of a full installation kit with new bearings, lifters, cam/crank hardware and a gasket/O-ring set, makes installation easier. Those gaskets, by the way, allow use of the factory one-piece pushrods or Feuling’s optional heavy duty HP+ 0.165 wall one-piece pushrods.

Feuling’s Reaper 472 camshaft is a bolt-in performance upgrade that works with all levels of engine modifications.

As is true with any M8 cam swap, Feuling also recommends its heavy-duty fastener kit to go with the 472. Replacing the factory rocker-shaft bolts with studs and nuts, the kit reduces stress on the rocker-shaft standoffs and helps prevent cylinder-head cracking. ■
