Let’s Go Racing! by D on Em de

Don Emde checks out this rare Feuling W3 at the Louisville show featuring his old racing #25. T

he new market category called “Performance Baggers” started slowly a few years back. We all know that you can’t travel long distances on a motorcycle any better than on a Bagger and the leading comfort upgrades have traditionally been with sound systems, lighting and seats. But along the way, some touring riders wanted a little more pep and added an aftermarket exhaust and related performance products. And with more speed, good handling became more critical. It was only a matter of time until there would be interest to see how the big Harley-Davidson and Indian touring bikes would do on a real race track. On July 11th we are going to find out. As noted in the News section beginning on page 10, the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers Invitational will be the first ever organized race for Performance Baggers. The race will be part of the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. This unique new race is an invitation-only event for selected vendors and race teams connected to Drag Specialties. Each team has accepted the challenge to build a racing machine that will showcase their individual specialty in the market, as well as other products

found in the Drag Specialties FatBook. The underlying concept is their motorcycles of choice have to be a model that was originally offered to the public as a touring machine with fairings and saddlebags still in place. More about this in the issues to follow. Yours truly will serve as Grand Marshal of the race. Prior to my years as a book and magazine publisher, I earned my living in racing and competed in the first-ever roadrace National at Laguna Seca back in 1972. That was the same year that I had won the prestigious Daytona 200. At the recent Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo in Louisville I was surprised to be presented with a classic Feuling W3 that I will use to pace the racers around the track on the warmup lap of the race. Feuling will also be one of the 14 teams in the race with a modern Harley-Davidson V-twin Performance Bagger. Hope to see you in Monterey for the first-ever Drag Specialties King of the Baggers Invitational! ■

NEWS EVENTS Drag Specialties King of The Baggers 14 TEAMS TO COMPETE AT LAGUNA SECA

M

otoAmerica and Drag Specialties will combine forces to make Bagger class road racing a reality as highly customized V-twins from 14 different teams will invade WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday, July 11, for the first-ever King of the Baggers invitational. Held in conjunction with round six of the 2020 MotoAmerica Series, the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers will be part of the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey, a weekend packed full of motorcycle sport and lifestyle. That means seven classes of racing will take to one of the most famous racetracks in the world, the iconic 2.238-mile circuit that’s nestled in the hills of the Monterey Peninsula – with the Performance Baggers joining the premier MotoAmerica Superbike, Supersport, Liqui Moly Junior Cup, Stock 1000, Twins Cup and Heritage Cup racing. “I can’t wait to go watch the Baggers come down the Corkscrew for the first time,” said MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey. “That will be a sight that I think our fans will love. I think these guys will put on a heck of a show and it will tie in nicely with all the other things we have planned for the Superbike Speedfest at Monterey. It’s going to be an awesome weekend of all-things-motorcycling at Laguna Seca.” The inaugural Drag Specialties King of the Baggers invitational will crown a champion and the competitors vying for that crown will come from an elite group of V-Twin companies. The 14 teams will be showcasing their Performance Bagger products both on the racetrack and off. The list of invited teams set to participate in the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers is a who’s-who of the distributor’s leading V-twin vendors. (The teams were to announce their riders shortly after this issue went to print.)

“The guys over at Drag Specialties have really stepped up with our event at Laguna and we’ve got a lot of great companies building tricked-out Performance Baggers for the race,” said MotoAmerica’s senior sponsorship manager Lance Bryson. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and we think our fans are going to like what they see with this and the rest of the cool stuff we have planned for the Superbike Speedfest at Monterey.” The Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race has the builders excited about the chance to test their wares against each other and at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Alex Fox, founder of Slyfox Performance, said that he was honored to have his brand be a part of a first-ever event of this magnitude. “That Corkscrew section will be something to keep an eye on,” Fox said. “This day will be one for the history books.” Fox’s sentiments were echoed by all involved. “In all my years of working in the motorcycle industry, I have never been to Laguna Seca,” said Brandon Holstein, owner/builder of The Speed Merchant. “So, I am beyond excited to be going for the first time and being a part of the first-ever Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race.” “Drag Specialties has been the leader in V-twin performance products since 1968,” said Jim Matchette, Drag Specialties national sales manager. “Our company’s heritage comes from supporting racing and our slogan is ‘We Support the Sport.’ We are excited to be a part of this ground-breaking event and look forward to seeing where this inaugural race takes the Performance Bagger market. Drag Specialties has all the premier brands that will make these bikes perform at their highest level. We look forward to seeing all of you at Laguna Seca in July.” ■

Vance & Hines to Sponsor AFT SuperTwins FOUR CONSECUTIVE YEARS FOR PREMIER CLASS SPONSORSHIP

A

merican Flat Track announced a multiyear renewal of its long-standing partnership with Vance & Hines. As the AFT SuperTwins class makes its 2020 debut, the premier class of AFT will once again hold Vance & Hines as its presenting sponsor.

The sponsorship is a natural for Vance & Hines, a company with its roots in racing and its focus on performance. Through its 40-year history the company has operated factory race programs for several manufacturers and provided the performance that delivered championships in almost every type of motorcycle racing.

The Badlands Sequential Illuminator™ provide sequential flashing turn signals for any 3LED’s (per side) with built-in run & brake light & Load Equalizer™ features! That’s an all-in-one module, harness, plug-n-play & a LIFETIME WARRANTY! So save your money & some space under your seat using the industry leading “originals” since 1990.

“Vance & Hines are a long-standing supporter of AFT and a fierce competitor in our race paddock,” said Michael Lock, CEO of American Flat Track. “We are proud to embark on a new multiyear partnership with them, and fans all across the country eagerly await their progress on the tracks in the 2020 series.” The California-based performance company has stirred up real excitement with its AFT SuperTwins presented by Vance & Hines rider roster. With veterans Bryan Smith and Jarod Vanderkooi leading the charge, with young protege Dalton Gauthier, the V&H-powered Harley-Davidson XG750R-mounted pilots will be a formidable force. “We couldn’t be more excited about being part of AFT SuperTwins, the premier class in American flat track racing,” said Mike Kennedy, president of Vance & Hines. “At Vance & Hines, racing is in our blood and this series is a perfect way for us to highlight how we deliver exhilaration on the track and on the street.” ■

Success in the North! DRAG SPECIALTIES TOURS CANADA

I

n 2018 and 2019, Parts Canada decided to bring a new addition to its display at the Canadian Consumer Motorcycle Shows. The distributor added a small group of Drag Specialties vendors into a row they dubbed, Drag Alley.

This was a test to see what the response would be, not only from the vendors who come up north to experience the shows, but also from the consumers who attend them. The experience was very exciting and the team at Parts Canada knew it was on to something good. For 2020, the company decided to go really big by refurbishing an old Parts Canada corporate booth structure, and rebranding it as the Drag Specialties booth. For the Canadian 2020 show season, Parts Canada toured to five major cities with the new Drag Specialties booth. Featuring 2,500 square-feet of space, the booth was a hit at each of the shows Parts Canada attended – the tour started in

Toronto before moving on to Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and then to Montreal. The corporate booth hosted the Drag Specialties brand along with 13 other well-known V-twin brands, each one supported by an experienced and knowledgeable brand rep. Showgoers venturing out in the 30 degrees below temps had the opportunity to get a hands-on look at products from Bassani Xhaust, Custom Dynamics, Drag Specialties, Fueling Parts, Hogtunes, Kuryakyn, LA Choppers, Legend Suspensions, Mustang Seats, Rinehart Racing, Saddlemen, S&S Cycle, and Vance & Hines. The show promoters applauded the concept of having these brands represented together, and not just visually with product displays and branding, but also by having their reps on the floor. This was a very positive addition to the shows, and the consumers were equally as impressed.

Consumers had the opportunity to talk about product specifics and fine points of their custom projects thanks to the attention and expertise of the brand product specialists in attendance.

With a steady flow of traffic and the ability to turn conversations into direct sales for nearby dealerships, the vendors were also excited. A win-win for all, but mostly for the Drag Specialties brand, which now shines under its own spotlight up in the north. ■

2020/2021 OLDBOOK COVER BIKE

The engine and transmission are 1956 original. Almost everything else that Dan “Cabana Dan” Rognsvoog used to create this classic came right out of the 2020/2021 OldBook.

The newest OldBook Cover Bike

The tanks are Drag Specialties 5-gallon Fat Bobs, and that multi-hued paint job comes courtesy of Blue Moon Kustoms in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

T

he 2020/2021 OldBook is out and it’s filled with everything it takes to keep those classic Harley-Davidsons, the Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovels, Evo Big Twins and Ironhead XLs alive, well, and out on the street. For 2020/2021 there are more custom-cool parts for all those bikes, so have a look, though the bike on the cover showcasing those parts should be all the convincing it takes. As wicked-cool a Panhead custom as you’re likely to find, aside from the genuine 1956 drivetrain beating at the heart of this beauty, almost everything else came straight out of that 2020/2021 OldBook. Dan “Cabana Dan” Rognsvoog chose those parts and assembled this throwback stunner right in his home-garage workshop in Milwaukee. “I already had that ’56 engine and tranny, and was saving it for a special project,” he says. This bike, most certainly, was it. A full-time employee at the local power company, Dan builds custom bikes for a hobby. He’ll turn out one a year,

more often than not showcasing a passion for vintage machines rendered with some modern sensibilities and put together with an eye for style many a pro would envy. None of this has gone unnoticed, either. Dan’s bikes have been featured in Easyriders, Hot Bike, American Iron, American Cycle, and Thunder Press and he’s come home with trophies from the Easyriders Shows, the Black Hills Bike Shows and Donnie Smith’s fabled get-togethers. Dan’s bikes have been featured in Michael Lichter’s Buffalo Chip exhibits and now there’s one on the cover of the Drag Specialties OldBook and out on the Drag event truck for the 2020 season. A chance meeting with Drag Specialties’ Tom Motzko kicked off this build. Dan and a friend were in Janesville, Wisconsin checking out a car Tom had for sale. It didn’t take long for Dan and Tom to realize they had more in common than the love of cool cars. Even cooler motorcycles, they discovered, played a big part in both of their lives.

DRAG SPECIALTIES

Tall up front and way down at the tail, the overall vintage look seamlessly blends with some modern updates. For example, the headlight is a Performance Machine Chrome Grill LED.

One thing led to another, and soon the Drag Specialties catalogs – the FatBook, the OldBook, the Skinnys and the Updates – began showing up at Dan’s house. In addition to those V-twin bibles, there were instructions to order up whatever he needed to build another bike based around that ’56 Panhead drivetrain he had ready and waiting. At first, Dan explains, he thought about putting together a tough-as-nails little bobber and there’s little doubt that with his skills it would have been a sweet ride. However, the more he thought about that, the more he realized it would be far better to take this opportunity, and that ’56 drivetrain, and do something a little different.

A Klock Werks Builder Series stretched rear fenders and frenched license plate frame are perfect for the lowrider style. They’re both right out of the OldBook.

Outwardly simple, this bike is still loaded with detail. The tool boxes are Drag Specialties reproductions, forward controls are GMA.

2020/2021 OLDBOOK COVER BIKE

We can’t think of a better use for an original ’56 engine than the starring role played here. Those outrageous handlebars and pipes are one-offs by Dan Rognsvoog.

The result is what we see here, a custom Pan with the kind of up-in-the-bars/down-in-the-tail look that would make any lowrider proud, sealing that deal with lots of Kandy Blue and Silver Metalflake paint, long and low pipes and just the right splash of chrome.

Specialties Teardrop Tool Boxes, one on the right and one on the left, gave the bike all the bodywork it would need. Dan fabricated the tall-and-kicked-forward newsboy style handlebars himself and used a Biltwell *Builder’s Exhaust Kit to put together the bike’s signature long-and-low pipes.

Dan kicked things off with a Paughco Big Twin Rigid Wishbone frame, with no stretch in the backbone and a 30-degree neck. Matched with a Paughco Leaf Spring Front End and laced Drag Specialties wheels mounting Pirelli tires – 21 for the front and 16 out back – the stance was set and the vintage engine and tranny had a new home.

There’s plenty more going on here, lots more from the OldBook and it’s all listed in the accompanying Build Sheet. Check it out. Naturally, all this will be out on tour with the Drag Specialties Show Semi so stop by when you get that chance. Meanwhile, take a good look right here, and on the cover of the 2020/2021 OldBook. Cabana Dan has shown us all what’s possible with imagination, creativity and those Drag Specialties catalogs. ■

Learning on the Go THE 2020 DRAG TRAINING TOUR HITS THE ROAD

T

he Drag Specialties Training Tour is back for its fourth year of exclusive product training, hands-on demos and special purchase offers for dealers. Throughout the 24-city tour, a total of 15 different popular vendors will be giving dealers details about all of their latest products plus sales trend insight and merchandising strategies. Drag Specialties brings the training to you! There are some new cities on the tour this year, giving dealers who haven’t been able to attend in the past because of geography a better opportunity to participate in 2020. After its appearance at Daytona Beach Bike Week, the Drag Specialties truck will pack up and start the seven-month road trip, kicking off the tour on March 24 in Dallas, Texas. At each tour stop, five vendors will give presentations to dealers. The vendors will not only give dealers an in-depth overview of new products, but they will also be offering hands-on demos. After the training, bikes outfitted with the products featured during the presentation will be on display at the Drag truck so dealers can see what the products look like on the bike and actually feel and use the products themselves. All of the Drag Training Tour dates are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which means dealers can attend the training without giving up valuable weekend time when business is the busiest. As always, the Drag Training Tour will include strong incentives for attending dealers. Both Drag Specialties and the participating vendors will offer discounted products, special

In addition to product training from brand specialists at participating vendors, the Tour features FatBook and OldBook custom bikes customized with a host of parts and accessories.

bundles or other exclusive deals that are not available anywhere else. After traveling to the West Coast and looping back through the Midwest, the Drag Training Tour will conclude on October 1 back in Daytona where the Drag truck started, shortly before the start of Biketoberfest. In addition to the Drag Training Tour, Drag Specialties also offers its Open House program to dealers. Drag coordinates open houses during free weekends in between tour stops. The Drag Specialties truck will display its custom motorcycles to give customers ideas about how they can outfit their own bikes. Literature and on-site sales reps help give the dealer a boost, too, as does social media support leading up to the Open House. Dealers who are interested in participating should have a talk with their Drag rep to get additional details. ■

obra has beefed up its accessory product portfolio. The most interesting of its new and expanded detachable line up has to be the detachable Big Ass Wrap Around racks for Harley-Davidson Dynas, Softails and Sportsters. This is a wide rack that “wraps” around the sides and back of the seat. When your customer wants to hit the road, he or she can do so because this rack provides them the opportunity to pack heavy and locate the weight of the gear over the rear tire instead of hanging off the back of the bike. Each is model specific, and they all come with all the docking hardware needed for installation. These will not work with, nor do they need the Harley docking hardware. They are available in chrome or gloss black. Like Cobra’s other detachable racks, these use a proprietary pull release mechanism so they can be installed or removed in a matter of seconds.

The Cobra Detachable Big Ass Wraparound rack in black on the Softail Sport Glide allows the bags to open easily. Removing the rack is a snap thanks to the unique docking system.

The Dyna fitments have two basic versions. The first is for riders using a stock OEM style seat. It has a larger opening to bend around the stock seat and overall it is nearly 19-inches wide. It’s approximately 13-inches front to back. The second version is for riders using some of the narrower aftermarket seats like the Saddlemen Step Up or other step-up-style seats. This rack for aftermarket seats is approximately 2-inches

narrower side to side than the one for OEM seats, but the same 13-inches front to back. The top of the rack is about level with the top of the seat and each rack has a kick up in the rear. The middle of the rear section uses a laser-cut, formed steel plate for additional strength and to better hold cargo in place. There are plenty of places to attach bungee cords or mounting straps so riders will no longer have to scratch their bike’s fender securing cargo. Cobra has informative

diagrams showing the measurements, so a rider running a different seat can see if the racks will fit around that seat. Fitments include most of the new Milwaukee-Eight Softails, Dynas from 2006-2017, and Sportsters from 2004-2020. Rounding out the Cobra detachable rack line is a new version for Baggers. It seems more and more riders are using the larger tactical style bags, which have a greater footprint. So, racks with a kick up at the rear do not allow

The new Big Ass Flat Rack is exactly that – big and flat. It’s available in chrome or black.

Cobra has also introduced Tour Pack rack mounts for Baggers covering years from 1997-2008, 2009-2013, and 2014-2020. These use the same pull-pin release mechanisms as the other Cobra detachable products. The 1997-2008 racks use a front and rear mount kit, while the 2009-2020 versions require the Cobra four-point docking hardware that is used for the Cobra detachable backrests and racks.

enough room for these style of bags. Hence the new Cobra Big Ass Flat Rack for Baggers; it has the same width as the standard Big Ass rack, but it is entirely flat, allowing riders to firmly cinch the larger bag and other cargo.

The team at Cobra keep cranking out the new products and this latest batch of goodies is just one example of the company’s massive product line for your Harley-Davidson riding customers. ■

Cobra has expanded the fitment options of its popular v-style freeway bar. It now offers more choices for the M8 powered Softails, as well as for older model Dynas, Softails and Sportsters.

here’s really no off-season in the motorcycle business. Sure, there is a winter, but that’s the time companies like Cobra use to create, manufacture, and introduce new products so those products are in the dealerships in time for the start of spring riding. This winter, Cobra looks like it has made very good use of the riding season down time, and all the news is not just new products, but something just as exciting, if not more important. You see, Cobra has undertaken the task to get 31 of its Bagger slip-on mufflers tested so they are Qualified Manufacturer Declared U.S. 50-State Legal Emissions Replacement Parts. What does that mean? It means dealers large and small in all states can sell the applicable mufflers for the applications and years listed without fear

of violating ARB or EPA regulations, and that includes dealers in California. None of these applications remove or replace the stock bike’s catalytic converter, and these have been tested in an independent facility to ARB/EPA standards to ensure they do not alter the stock bike’s exhaust emissions. For a complete list of the available exhausts you can contact your local Drag Specialties sales rep. “It’s clear that we should be good citizens in our states, and do our best to manufacture products that meet clean air standards and regulations. Now we’ve taken the next step to have the test data to support our claims,” says Tim McCool, Cobra president. “That’s so our distributors, dealers and customers can have the confidence to sell and purchase our products knowing we and they are on the right side of clean air regulations.” ■

y the time you’re reading this, chances are you can already hear Spring and the coming riding weather fairly scratching at your front door. Sure, the wintertime lull seems to hang around forever, but what better time is there for dealers to start laying the groundwork for being ready when the new sales season to kick off. The place to be in these early months of 2020? That would be the Drag Specialties Spring NVP Product Expo, which returned again to the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville for another feature-packed trade show. Not only was this year’s Spring NVP a banging success, it also welcomed its highest attendee numbers over any previous Expo. That’s a whole lot of savvy dealers all on the hunt for the hottest new products from some of the powersports industry’s leading vendors. sales. “Our industry needs to provide an unmatched shopping experience. One key to that is product knowledge, and we feel it’s our responsibility to deliver a mechanism for that to occur. “Last year we talked about how important product knowledge is to the shopping experience, and this year’s show saw a significant increase of attendees per dealer. It was wonderful to see the dealers finding the value and engaging more of their staff.” On the Friday night before the opening of the show, the collective Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited sales force was recognized for its 2019 achievements at the Night of the Stars Awards Banquet. Right from the get go, the Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo was all about delivering essential information about the vendors and products that fill the FatBook and OldBook. Once the show opened on Saturday morning, dealers had all day to visit exhibitors and see all the new products destined for dealerships shelves and counters.

Saturday’s show ended with a dealer happy hour before the whole show moved over to the Sports & Social Club in the heart of Louisville’s 4th Street Live! district for the now-iconic LeMans Meet & Greet. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, games, robust camaraderie and the Tampa Supercross on more than 60 TVs. Sunday found the convention center expo hall just as packed as dealers finished up their rounds with the assembled vendors. At the closing of the show, one lucky vendor – Mike Miller of Millerbuilt Performance Cycles in Cameron Park, California – won a trip to the 2020 Drag Specialties Dealer Ride. “2020 is going to be a great year if this show is any indication,” says Mike Collins, President of LeMans Corporation. “We need only to carry this enthusiasm and optimism into the rest of the year.”

AIR-INTAKE SYSTEMS

The X and The Blade

The Two Newest VO2 Air-Intakes

The new X air-intake system from Vance & Hines not only looks great, but also is the third piece of the power puzzle. Installing it, some high flow exhausts and a fuel management system go a long way for building good, solid power.

H

arley-Davidson high performance doesn’t happen with just one change. It isn’t just the pipes and mufflers making that big difference, nor is it the re-mapped computers or the big, free-flowing air intake systems. High performance done right takes all of that; it’s a package deal. More air taken in, the right amounts of fuel added to that enhanced airflow and ignited at the right time with all of that efficiently exhausted through the right set of pipes and mufflers. That’s the recipe for V-twin performance. Sounds easy, and with Vance & Hines it is. Long known in the performance and racing world for its full range of high-performing exhaust systems the team at Vance & Hines is well aware of what it takes to make a Harley-Davidson sing. That easy path to Vance & Hines power involves the Fuelpak FP3 tuning systems, the complete line of specially designed VO2 air-intake systems and a set of those road-ripping exhausts. intake, exhaust and tuning.

Now Vance & Hines has two new additions to the VO2 air-intake system lineup, the X and the Blade. The new systems join a high-flowing, high-style air intake range that already includes the Rogue, the Naked, the Cage Fighter, the Skullcap, the Skullcap Crown, and the VO90. These two latest are somewhat similar in appearance to the Rogue VO2s, but come with new contrast-cut finishes and a style all their own for a look that is also quite different. When it comes to the performance, though, the X and the Blade are just like every other deep-breathing air-intake system in the Vance & Hines VO2 lineup – they’re built to perform. For starters, Vance & Hines has teamed up with another well-known name, K&N, for the filter elements in all the VO2 air intakes. These are free-flowing, washable and reusable filtering elements, featuring Xstream filter tops that were originally developed for racing. Those high-flow filter elements are combined with specially designed backing plates that feature internal and flow-enhancing venturis as well as integral breather assemblies.

VANCE & HINES

Minimalist in appearance, but heavy on performance, the Blade air-intake system is built to provide a nice boost in power.

The high-style covers are CNC-machined billet aluminum and – depending on the model – they’re are secured with race-spec ARP bolts. Everything needed for the installation is included and both are offered with a wide choice of finish options like Chrome, Black, Wrinkle Black and Black Contrast. The X, as the name implies, has a stylized X across its mostly open face. The cover for the Blade showcases a single, vertical blade across the sharp, clean lines of its face. Both have that familiar Vance & Hines logo machined-in at their centers. Applications for a VO2 intake cover the whole Harley lineup, including Dynas, Milwaukee-Eights, Softails, Sportsters, Twin Cams, and Touring models. As mentioned, getting the most out of these air-intake systems means installing that trifecta of power – air intake, fuel management system and exhaust. Vance & Hines has a ready answer for the question of what kind of fuel management system to use for re-mapping the bike and dialing in the performance, and that’s the Fuelpak FP3.

Designed to wirelessly connect via Bluetooth with an iPhone or Android smartphone, the Fuelpak FP3 features Flash technology that makes it easy to upload custom maps that are dyno-developed in-house by Vance & Hines. Each one is calibrated for a specific combination of performance parts, and virtually every combination of Vance & Hines intakes and exhausts is covered. For advanced users, the FP3 gives full access to all the critical ECU tables to custom-adjust idle rpm, rev limits, VE, air/fuel ratio, spark advance and more. There’s also an AutoTune function and the ability to diagnose trouble codes and view live sensor data in real time. Fuelpak FP3 is that good, and that easy to use. ■

TIRES

Tire Revolution

More Than a Century on Motorcycles

For well over 100 years Michelin has been a driving force in motorcycle tire technology. The innovations go back to its first skid-resistant motorcycle tire released in 1926, and continue on right up to the company’s new for 2020 Commander III Touring and Cruiser tires. Those two new tires build on the Commander line legacy by providing improved handling, longevity and wet-weather performance for V-twin riders.

R

iders of all types often get excited about vintage bikes and the classic models from their favorite manufacturers. But the history of motorcycling is about a lot more than just the bikes, and brands like Michelin have been helping create that history for well over 100 years. The Michelin story includes a lot of firsts, technical innovations and evolution through the decades, so let’s take a look at a few of the landmark moments for the venerable brand. Michelin was founded in 1889 by brothers Edouard and Andre Michelin, but it was in 1891 that the French company had its first technological breakthrough. The brothers were helping a bicyclist repair his tire, and they realized that the process could be much simpler. Up until then, the tire and wheel of a bicycle were glued together, meaning that replacing a tire could literally take days. The Michelin brothers came up with a removable bicycle tire that allowed it to be a separate entity from the wheel, making repairs significantly faster.

42

APRIL 2020

Just four years later, the Michelin brothers jumped behind the wheel of a French car called the Éclair to participate in the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris road race. The car’s name means “lightning” in French, and by all accounts the Éclair zigzagged down the road just like a bolt of lightning. Nevertheless, as the first car fitted with pneumatic tires, Michelin proved that air-filled tires were a viable possibility for the auto industry. The first Michelin motorcycle tire hit the market in 1897, as the company saw the potential of the emerging industry. By 1926, Michelin had developed the first skidresistant motorcycle tire to provide better stability to the now-booming world of motorcycles. Many of the innovations that have affected tires as we know them today have come about in the past 50 years of Michelin’s history. In 1974, the first slick motorcycle tire appeared on Grand Prix bikes. But the introduction of the radial motorcycle tire in 1984 would have an even bigger influence on motorcycling as a whole.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

MICHELIN

Michelin actually filed a patent for the radial tire back in 1946 for automotive applications. By treating the mechanical properties of the crown separately from those of the sidewalls, the radial tire design improved steering and longevity, while allowing enough sidewall flex for comfort and reduced rolling resistance. The first radial tires wouldn’t show up on motorcycles until 1984, when they were tested in Grand Prix racing. After refining them in that competitive arena, Michelin introduced its first radial tires for street motorcycles in 1987, including the Michelin A59X and M59X. Radial technology provided a critical advantage in terms of resistance and stability at high speeds, as well as consistently superior, long-term road performance, riding comfort and wear resistance. Michelin 2CT Technology, which enabled a tire to have a dual-compound design, debuted in 2005 on the Michelin Power Race tire, ushering in the continuously-evolving science of dual compound technology. In 2008, Michelin and Harley-Davidson signed a historic partnership agreement that the Michelin Scorcher tires would be co-developed and co-branded as original equipment and replacement tires for many of Harley’s models. Today, the Scorcher tire, available in five distinct models, is OE on nearly half of Harley-Davidson motorcycles including new platforms such as the LiveWire, and the planned Bronx streetfighter and Pan America Adventure bike.

The Scorcher 32 tires are one option in the range of tires codeveloped and co-branded by Michelin and Harley-Davidson.

Wet grip got a boost in 2011, when Michelin integrated sipes into the Pilot Road 3 thanks to Michelin XST Technology. Grip and confidence in the wet were further enhanced in 2014 with the Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT tire, featuring Michelin XST+ Technology for sipes that offer even better wet-weather handling and grip. That tire’s debut was significant for another bit of Michelin ingenuity, too. The Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT debuted as the first tire to have both radial and bias plies thanks to Michelin 2AT Technology. In 2018 Michelin Road 5 tires enhanced wet grip ability with Michelin XST Evo Technology, three-dimensional sipes to significantly prolong wet grip, even as the tire wears. All of the technology that goes into creating tires is geared toward meeting the Michelin Total Performance standard. Michelin doesn’t believe that one tire trait should suffer just so another one can shine. Instead, features like wet grip, handling, riding enjoyment and longevity should all be optimized to provide all-around premium performance. That commitment to the Michelin Total Performance Standard can be found in tires like the new Michelin Commander III Touring and Cruiser tires, which provide improved handling, longevity and wet-weather characteristics for V-twins.

Michelin’s Scorcher 31 comes as the OE tire on several HarleyDavidson models, including many Dyna and Sportster models.

And if you’ve ever wondered about the age of Bibendum – better known in North America as the Michelin Man – he was “born” in 1898. Not surprisingly, his look was inspired by a stack of tires the Michelin brothers saw at an exhibition. ■

T

he Revere line by Mustang Seats gives riders the Mustang quality and comfort they have come to expect, but with a custom look right out of the box. Now, the Revere Journey seat is available in solo and 2-up options with two distinctive stitch designs, Gravity and Diamond. Mustang Seats first developed the Revere seat line in 2015 for the Harley-Davidson market, with unique stitch patterns that have a more stylish, custom look than a typical aftermarket seat. Multiple thread colorways add to the custom styling. The Revere seats, which have mid- to low-profile designs, offer a sportier look with plenty of comfort for all-day riding. Like every other Mustang seat, the Revere seats feature the same premium qualities that customers rely on from the brand, such as a fiberglass seat pan, controlled-density foam and hand-sewn covers. The Revere Journey design is cut low for a sleek look, but it offers plenty of lower back support to keep riders comfortable. The 2-up version includes a tapered back that maintains the streamlined styling while still offering adequate cushioning for passengers. The Revere Journey Gravity seat features a free-flowing stitch design, while the Revere Journey Diamond has a unique double-stitched diamond pattern. Both options are available from Drag Specialties in a black cover and

one of three thread colors – Black, American Beauty Red or Gunmetal Gray. All of the seat components are hand-assembled at the Mustang Seats facility in Three Rivers, Massachusetts. The company is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and the skilled craftsmen at Mustang continue in the long tradition of forming each seat by hand using premium raw materials. That attention to detail is complemented by in-house customer service dedicated to serving both dealers and customers. On top of the Revere Journey’s marine-grade fiberglass baseplate is Mustang’s controlled-density foam. The foam is all compounded and molded in-house, and it is formulated to be soft enough for comfort yet resilient enough to stand up to long days in the saddle. While the high-quality polyurethane foam often feels firmer than stock, it will compress and mold itself to the rider’s body shape within about 15 minutes of riding time, every time. There is no break-in period required, and the foam maintains its resiliency ride after ride. Each seat cover is cut from a high-quality expanded vinyl that looks like leather while offering extreme durability and maintenance-free riding. All seams are double-stitched for strength.

AIR CLEANER COVER

Tribute to a Classic

Echoes of a Performance Milestone

The new Tribute air cleaner cover from S&S Cycle pays homage to the company’s classic Two Throat carburetor and matching air cleaner. It looks at home on any build, old or new.

S

et your wayback machine for the early ’80s – we were all wondering who shot J.R., Pac-Man hit the market, and George B Smith of S&S Cycle had just launched the Two Throat carburetor and matching air cleaner. This classic design went on to serve as a performance milestone in the V-twin space for more than a decade, with its double-barreled velocity stacks feeding into a two-throat carb and topped by a huge air scoop. The go-fast look was bold, brash and very S&S.

The Tribute air cleaner retains the massive forward-facing scoop, just as the original did, providing a distinct airflow advantage and is a perfect complement to S&S Cycle’s Stealth air cleaner system. “We’ve always loved the look of this air cleaner, so bringing it back needed to happen,” says S&S product manager, Grant Hillegass. S&S Cycle has a Stealth air filter kit for almost all HarleyDavidson models, and the Tribute cover bolts up nicely to all of them. It’s available as a complete kit or only the cover in Chrome or Gloss Black. And, because this is an S&S product, it’s not just an aesthetic upgrade. The Tribute cover and Stealth air cleaner provide a boost of up to 6hp on the Milwaukee-Eight platform. ■

Now long gone, they remain a hot commodity for tunedin chopper builders and regularly fetch hefty prices in bike-builder forums and online sales platforms like eBay. In a nod to that landmark product, S&S Cycle has recently released the new Tribute air cleaner cover, offering a modern take on a cult classic. While staying true to the original styling, the Tribute is wrapped around the company’s contemporary high-flow Stealth filter system. The Tribute features distinctive design cues that echo the class Two Throat carb cover, including that massive air scoop. Combined with a Stealth air cleaner kit, the Tribute provides good looks and a performance boost.

V-twin Tires for Various Styles The ME77 is a tire the combines classic style with modern construction. These tubeless tires feature a tread pattern that has been in the Metzeler lineup since the 1960s.

V-twin riders looking for a modern, highperformance tire should check out the Metzeler Cruisetec. Offering both nimble handling and long-lasting performance, the Cruisetec is a great choice for today’s hard-charging riders.

and is designed for motorcycles from the 1950s and 1960s. The tube-type design means the Block C pairs with a tubetype rim for further vintage authenticity. The Block C is a bi-directional tire that can be used on the front or rear wheel. The ME11 is a front tire that works well in conjunction with an ME77 or Block C tire on the rear. Metzeler shows off its classic rib front tread pattern on the ME11, and the tire offers reliable cornering and great straight-line stability.

ME888 tires

V

-twin tire choices are more nuanced than ever, making it easier for customers to get just the right tire for their model and style of riding. Metzeler has three distinct categories for its V-twin tires, including options like the ME77 for classic builds, the Cruisetec for high-performance riding and the ME888 for high-mileage touring. Vintage bikes benefit from the ME77, a tire that combines classic style with modern construction. Four popular sizes were introduced last year, including 130/90B16 and 90/90-21 for the front and 130/90B16 and 150/80B16 for the rear. These tubeless tires have the updated technology and performance that riders expect from Metzeler, but the styling is definitely old school – the tread pattern has been in the Metzeler lineup since the 1960s. In addition to fitting right in on a vintage bike, the ME77 can also give a modern bike like a Harley-Davidson Sportster Forty-Eight or Heritage Softail more of a retro look. Metzeler also offers true vintage tires like the Block C and ME11, which can give a vintage build the perfect finishing touch. The Block C tire features a classic Metzeler pattern

Precision Performance

Mid-Controls for Milwaukee-Eights

F

loorboards, heel/toe shifters and big brake pedals have their place and so do way-outfront forward controls. However, for a growing number of Harley-Davidson riders, having a bike that’s set up to perform during aggressive, sportoriented action has become the overriding goal. For this type of riding, one of the most important things to have onboard is a set of classically positioned mid-controls that put a rider well in control. Performance Machine has exactly that, a mid-control conversion set that’s available for both Touring and Softail Milwaukee-Eight models. These are direct bolt-ons, so no cutting into the primary covers is needed, and no modifications of any kind are required. The only caveat is that on Touring models, the controls won’t fit with the stock exhaust or with some aftermarket pipes similarly placed. These Milwaukee-Eight mid-controls are great looking, they’re lightweight and they’re strong. They’re easy to install and they can be used with either a Performance Machine rear brake master cylinder or the stock Harley master cylinder. Once installed, they’ll reposition the foot controls to precisely the spot where they’re needed for aggressive, sport-style riding. The Performance Machine midcontrols have steel brake linkage and chrome Heim joints, too, a parts combination making brake actuation smooth and easy.

Performance Machine’s mid-controls for Milwaukee-Eight Touring and Softail models reposition the foot controls to precisely the spot where they’re needed for aggressive, sport-style riding.

And on the other side of the bike, the short-throw shift lever lets the rider quickly and accurately rip through the gears. A stock Harley-Davidson style clevis is compatible with PM foot and toe pegs (available separately), as well as other aftermarket pegs. The size and placement of the new mid-controls is fully compatible with passenger floorboards or foot pegs. The new mid-controls are manufactured from 6061-T6 billet aluminum, and are available in a finish choice of either Black Ops or Gold Ops. Not every M-8 Bagger is a highway-bound touring machine, and not every multi-valve Softail is a stretched-out custom. Many of those bikes are being put to use in entirely different ways these days. They’re taking on aggressive roles requiring lots more ground clearance and definitely a feeling of total control for the rider. Performance Machine’s mid-control conversions for the Milwaukee-Eight Touring and Softail models deliver all of that. ■

SLYFOX

Drag Specialties dealers and sales reps who had the opportunity to attend the Louisville NVP Product Expo in February got to see the Pro Series seat up close and personal. Alex Fox had a version customized with gold stitching installed on the performance Bagger that Slyfox is entering in the groundbreaking Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race this July at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in California.

In addition to the red stitching, the Pro Series seat is also available in black stitching. Talk with your Drag Specialties rep about custom colors that are also an option for the stitching.

The Slyfox Pro Series seat is available in black with a black stitched logo or black with a burgundy stitched logo. The performance styling of the Pro Series seat fits right in with the carbon fiber front fender, side panels and saddlebag lids from Slyfox. By using carbon fiber, Slyfox achieves the goal of reducing weight, performing well and looking good, all at the same time. The carbon fiber pieces, which fit 2014 and up Baggers, use both premium materials as well as first-rate manufacturing processes. The parts are made from pre-impregnated carbon fiber that is both Mil-Spec and aerospace grade. Slyfox ensures that the autoclaving process is meticulously executed so that each part is premium quality. Gloss and matte finishes are available. The upper triple clamp also saves weight over stock, but its CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum construction

is actually stronger than the OE part. The clamp helps provide a more streamlined look to the dash area and works with a variety of handlebar styles. Customers can choose from either a raw or black anodized finish. All Slyfox parts are made in the USA. Founder Alex Fox launched the brand less than a year ago, and the line of performance V-twin parts continues to grow – design and prototyping is constantly underway. In addition to developing new parts, Slyfox will also be showing off the custom Road Glide that debuted at Daytona as the bike tours to various events around the country. ■

Stopping Power

Brake Discs and Pads for Big Twins

EBC’s Big Twin rotors feature a full-floating design, making it a great upgrade over the OE brake discs.

R

iders love to talk about how fast their bikes are, but the truth is stopping power is just as important as horsepower. For your customers who want to match their bike’s whoa to its go, and maybe even add a little extra show, EBC Brakes has the pads and discs they need. Take a look at any T-twin and it’s likely going to have solid, one-piece brake discs. These are a great option for the manufacturer since they’re simple and thus affordable to produce. Unfortunately, when it comes to hard braking, a solid disc can have alignment issues that will limit brake feel and cause vibration, and they’re not very efficient at dissipating heat, which is the enemy of brake pads. Speaking of brake pads, most OEM calipers contain the organic variety, which don’t offer particularly good performance. More on that in a moment. For better disc alignment, heat dissipation and overall performance, your customers can turn to EBC. The Big Twin rotors are an ideal option for Harley-Davidson, Victory, and Indian brands for a variety of models.

It’s important to install fresh brake pads whenever you swap rotors, and EBC has pads that are perfectly matched to their Big Twin discs. In fact, EBC’s Double-H sintered pads were developed specifically to work with EBC’s stainless-steel discs to offer the best bite, braking consistency and disc life, so there’s no concern about these aggressive pads doing damage to those new discs. Double-H refers to the pad’s friction rating when cold and hot, with H being the highest available grade. Compare that to the OEM organic pads that are likely in your customers’ bikes, which often carry a lower grade. With Double-H pads, they will get more initial bite and reduce risk of pad glazing, no matter how hard they ride. If you’ve got customers who take their brakes as seriously as their engines, point them toward EBC, a brand that’s been focused on quality brake components for decades. ■

EBC’s Big Twin rotors are made from two pieces rather than one, leading to a desirable full floating feature where the disc has some wiggle room relative to the carrier. This movement – permitted by EBC’s patented SD button system – enables better alignment between the discs and pads and allows the rotor blade to expand and contract freely under heavy braking to help eliminate brake vibration and rotor distortion. Of course, for many V-twin riders, form is as important as function. EBC’s discs feature functional and stylish ventilation holes and slots plus center hubs finished in either black chrome or a polished, chrome-like appearance that’s sure to enhance the look of any bike.

LED LIGHTING

Turn On the Light

LED Signals for Increased Visibility The Genesis 4 turn signal inserts are a groundbreaking addition to the Custom Dynamics Genesis line of LED products. The inserts offer a full white, halo-free amber/white LED light instead of just a halo.

B

eing visible to other traffic on the road is important, but that doesn’t mean a rider should sacrifice style just to stand out. Custom Dynamics continues to give riders creative ways to add both visibility and style to their motorcycles with LED lighting solutions. This time, Custom Dynamics is doing it with two new products: Genesis 4 turn signal inserts and handlebar end lights. The Genesis 4 turn signal inserts are a groundbreaking addition to the Custom Dynamics Genesis line of LED products. For the first time in the company’s history, Custom Dynamics now offers a full white, halo-free amber/white LED turn signal insert. The turn signals offer 48 super bright dual-color LEDs, which produce an outstandingly bright full white running daytime light instead of just a halo. The amber color also covers the entire surface of the turn signal inserts to provide maximum visibility. When the turn signal is activated, the white running lights turn off to make the amber turn signal even more prominent. The Genesis 4 turn signal inserts are sold as a pair in Bullet Style for Harley-Davidson models that have pop-off style turn signal lenses with tabs (p/n 2020-1881). The inserts are also available for Harley-Davidson Flat Style turn signals on models with turn signal lenses held on with two screws (p/n 2020-1882). The inserts are available with an

1157 pigtail bulb base for plug-and-play installation, and a heavy-duty coating across the back of the black circuit board ensures that they can stand up to the elements. Custom Dynamics is offering an additional way to increase visibility and safety, especially when changing lanes or turning, with the new amber/white bar end LED lights (p/n 2020-1889). The LEDs are sealed behind a polycarbonate lens that provides 360 degrees of uniform illumination around the end of the handlebar. A gloss black endcap provides the perfect finishing touch to this sleek LED addition. Bright white running light LEDs illuminate until the turn signal or hazard light is engaged, at which point the white lights are replaced by the amber turn signal LEDs. The bar end lights offer a universal application on 12V DC systems with a negative ground, and they fit handlebars with a 7/8-inch to 1-inch diameter fitted with open-ended handlebar grips. All necessary mounting hardware is included. Like all Custom Dynamics products, these two new additions come backed by the Custom Dynamics Lifetime LED Warranty. ■

Charging up the Challenger

Performance Exhausts for the Newest Indian

I

t isn’t just valanced fenders and fringed-leather with Indian Motorcycles, not anymore. Right along with that nod to the past aimed at riders of a certain demographic, there’s plenty of 21st century performance on tap, too, with bikes like the Scout and flattrack inspired FTR 1200. And now there’s one more, the Challenger. Offered in three models, these newest Indians are all performance-oriented Baggers, with performance being the operative word. From stem to stern, the Challenger models are built to boogie thanks to their liquidcooled/SOHC/multi-valve V-twin PowerPlus engines, lightweight cast-aluminum frames, inverted front suspensions, adjustable rear shocks, race-spec and radiallymounted Brembo brakes, and wind-tunnel designed fairings. Improving on what comes as OE is the name of the game, and this is where Bassani Xhaust comes in by offering some serious performance exhaust upgrades for Indian’s new Bagger. There are now Challenger applications for Road Rage 2-into-1 systems and a set of performance Bassani slip-ons. The exhausts are available in a choice of Black or Chrome finishes.

Bassani now has Road Rage 2-into-1 systems and slip-ons for Indian’s performance-oriented Bagger, the Challenger. These power-building pipes are good looking and sound even better.

The performance gains coming from a Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 system are well known in the V-twin world. In all of their many applications, these pipes are power builders. That’s certainly true here in this newest application for the liquid-cooled Indian PowerPlus. The stepped headpipes, 1¾-inch to 17/8-inch, have been custom-tuned to the Challenger, as has the design of the collector and the system’s 4-inch straight can muffler. There’s also a full-coverage heat shield, as well as machined-billet end cap with slash cut tips. Bassani has also included 18 mm O2 ports with 12 mm adapters and plugs. All of those separate bits come together in a sporty-looking system

that features Bassani’s no nonsense, aggressive sound with or without the removable baffle. Bassani has 4-inch straight can slip-on mufflers ready for the Challenger, too. Affordable performance builders, they’ve been designed inside and out specifically for the Challenger and they’re a no-hassle fit right onto the stock Indian headpipes. The slip-ons feature removable baffles, and the billet end caps are also slash cut. And, once again, the performance boost and cool look comes with a great tone. ■

Light Show

Expandable Lighting System with Custom Color

K

uryakyn believes that motorcycles should look just as impressive after the sun goes down as they do during the day. The company’s Prism+ LED headlights and accent lighting system provides a customizable, expandable network of lights that operate in sync via a Bluetooth app. Riders can be as bold, bright and colorful as they want at the touch of a button. The complete Prism+ LED network includes 5¾-inch and 7-inch headlights, 4½-inch passing lamps, accent lighting in three different kits, the Roulette Wheel axle light and Flare bolt lights.

Custom goes electric with Kuryakyn’s Prism+ LED lighting options. The range includes everything from accent lights to headlights and passing lamps – all of them easily customizable via a smartphone app.

The accent lighting kits include the Core, Impact and Pro. The Core Prism+ kit is the entry-level option that makes a perfect starting point for smaller-displacement vehicles or for focusing light on specific areas of the bike. Four Prism+ light pods and the Prism+ Bluetooth controller are included, along with everything needed for wiring and mounting. The Roulette Wheel offers a trick lighting option that includes 16 super bright wide-angle LEDs.

All of the lights and kits feature easy plug-and-play wiring. Once installed, everything can be synced with the Prism+ Bluetooth app, which works with any Android or iOS device. In addition to a massive range of color combinations selectable from a color wheel, the lights also include run, brake and turn signal functionality to enhance visibility on the road. In fact, a built-in Ride Mode defaults the front channels to amber and the rear to red, with optional turn and brake functionality also available on most models. There are other pre-set modes for color options, such as Chase Mode, in which the lights “chase” each other across the length of the bike, changing colors progressively. Chill Mode does the same, but at a more relaxed pace. Riders can also set their own custom light modes, which is easy to do with four separately programmable zones – two in the front and two in the rear. Music Sync allows the rider to sync the Prism+ network with music so that the lights are synchronized to the beat. Color-matching is possible via the device’s camera, so getting a perfect color match with the bike’s paint is a snap.

APRIL 2020

By tapping into the unique capabilities of LED lighting, your customers can fine-tune the lighting output of the Prism+ range in a rainbow of color options.

The Impact kit includes six Prism+ light pods and two eight-inch flex-strip lights. The Pro kit is the ultimate attention-getter with ten Prism+ light pods, two 4-inch flexstrip lights and two 8-inch flex strip lights. Both the Impact and Pro kits are available with or without a Bluetooth controller in case a rider is adding them to the Core kit or Orbit Prism+ headlights.

The Roulette Wheel features 16 intensely bright wide-angle LEDs that mount around the front axle spacer on most HarleyDavidson models. The Flare lights can be used with fender mounting bolts, chain/belt guard mounting bolts or any other fastener where an extra glow of light is desired. Kuryakyn designed the Prism+ network to be universal for any 12V DC application, and an integrated battery voltage monitor with automatic shut-off prevents overdrawing power from the bike. ■

Raising the Bar

Upgraded Bagger Control

P

erformance Baggers are all the rage right now. Turning a 900-pound touring bike into a high-performance machine is a feat, but it is completely feasible with the right parts list. Other than engine work and suspension, the handlebars are one of the most important modifications your customers can make on a bike to increase performance. Installing the right bar can make or break how a bike looks and feels. That’s why LA Choppers has spent countless hours testing and designing the Kage Fighter T-Bar (KFT), which measures 30½-inches wide and is available in a variety of different heights. The KFT has been a big hit with the Club Style crowd, specifically those riders on Harley-Davidson Dynas, FXRs and Sportster folks. Now Road Glide owners can also mount a T-Bar to their bikes. LA Choppers has a couple different T-Bar options available for Road Glides. One is a drop-down bracket that allows for a standard T-Bar, such as the KFT, to bolt onto the bike with some modifications to the nacelle. This will give the bike that aggressive and classic performance Bagger look and feel.

LA Chopper’s popular Kage Fighter T-Bar now comes in a new configuration that is designed to wrap around the stock instrument cluster and use the OE handlebar clamp. This version bolts right up with no modifications required.

LA Choppers also has another option that provides the T-Bar look and feel, but is designed to wrap around the stock instrument cluster and uses the OEM handlebar clamp. The benefit to this bar is that it requires zero modifications to the bike, easily installs, and still offers everything a classic T-Bar does. Not only does it easily install, but it allows for full view of the instrument cluster. No more riding blind and guessing the speed! The Road Glide-specific Kage Fighter-T Bar is available in Chrome, Gloss Black, and in 14-inch 16-inch and 18-inch heights. (Measuring at the handlebar grip area.) The bars are 1¼-inches in diameter throughout, including the clamping area. The top clamp is manufactured from machined billet aluminum, with an 8-bolt design to ensure no movement from the bars. Retail pricing is $399.95 and includes all items necessary to install to a Road Glide. The Road Glide drop down bracket is a great option if you’re wanting to run a standard T-Bar. The kit is powder coated black and includes all necessary hardware for installation. Retail pricing for the drop down is $164.95. ■

Speedy, Easy Service V-twin Oil Change Kits

egularly changing the oil and filter is just about the best thing any rider can do for his or her Harley-Davidson. Fresh, clean oil is the lifeblood of a motorcycle, the key to years of long, troublefree riding. And it’s so easy, something almost anyone can do right at home. Maxima Racing Oils, the Southern California company that has provided racers and high-performance riders with premium-level lubrication since 1979, has made that Saturday morning service work even easier – for both dealers and maintenance-minded riders. Maxima’s Oil Change in a Box kits come packed with everything needed for those beneficial at-home maintenance sessions, all in one box with one part number.

Maxima is offering two versions of its service kits. The first is an all-inclusive kit that includes engine oil, transmission oil, primary oil, drain plug O-rings and a ProFilter Premium Oil Filter. The Quick Change kit simply comes with Maxima’s high performance engine oil, drain plug O-rings and a ProFilter Premium Oil Filter. Both are available for Evolution, Twin-Cam, Milwaukee-Eight and Evo Sportster Harleys, and the kits offer riders the choice of a black or chrome oil filter. Depending on the year and model of bike, synthetic or mineral engine oil options are also offered.

Maxima is delivering more than just convenience with each service kit. These kits come packed with proven, improved performance. All of Maxima’s oils – mineral and synthetic – have been developed using real world endurance testing, coupled with intensive laboratory development. They’ll ensure maximum performance and protection under the most severe conditions. Maxima’s high-performance formulations deliver an extremely high level of engine, clutch, and gear protection by providing excellent film thickness and surface tenacity to protect cylinder walls, bearing journals and other critical areas under the harshest conditions. The proprietary, ashfree additive packages keep engines running clean and free of gum, corrosion and deposits. The ProFilter Premium Oil Filters included in the kits are just as good. Featuring M-Pleat technology, these filters provide a significantly larger filtration area than the OE filter, with a greater capacity to hold contaminants. They can actually extend filter life by 20 to 30 percent. Inside every ProFilter Oil Filter there’s a highperformance anti-drain back valve allowing optimum oil pressure and flow upon start-up, while on the outside a 17mm hex nut and pre-lubricated gasket allow for easy installation. To assure quality, each filter is individually leaktested on the production line. ■

The Predator is a popular seat that Drag Specialties produces to fit most models, like the Shovelhead (p/n 0805-0069). The Predator starts with a 3/16-inch ABS thermoformed base that provides a perfect fit. A carpeted bottom and rubber bumpers underneath decrease vibration and protect the bike’s paint. On top of the base, a molded polyurethane foam gives each seat style its distinct shape. The new low-profile design of the Predator looks great while providing maximum comfort, and the seat fits with all Drag and most Harley sissy bars. Each seat comes packaged with the necessary mounting hardware. The Predator seat for the Shovelhead is available with a high-quality, automotive-grade vinyl cover in a smooth finish. Some Predator applications also include the option for a solar-reflective leather finish in the seating area. The patented process reduces surface temperature by as much as 25°F, which means a cooler seat and extended life compared to conventional leather or vinyl. Drag Specialties offers several variations on the Predator design, like the Predator III seat for 1957-78 XL models. The six-inch tall driver support area provides all-day comfort, and the seat comes in smooth, diamond stitch and classic stitch finishes.

The aluminum base pan, which is carpeted to protect the bike, is topped by a foam-injected interior. The Scorpion front seat is a long 18-inches, with dramatic lines that add both style and comfort for the rider. The passenger seat is a similar design with smaller dimensions, measuring in at 14-inches long. The Low Rider solo seat (p/n DS-907540) is designed specifically for custom hardtail frames. The carpeted aluminum base is lightweight but sturdy. There is also a Low Rider passenger seat (p/n DS-907030), and both feature Drag’s distinctive Scorpion stitch. or 2020, those popular EZ Install handlebars and handlebar kits from Fat Baggers, Inc. are now available in big, 1½-inch diameter sizes. There are fitments for Harley-Davidson Road Glides, Street Glides and Road Kings, right up to the newest models. With the new sizes Fat Bagger has even incorporated a couple of new twists into the design. Through lots of extra effort and custom machine work, the 1½-inch diameter of the handlebar continues uninterrupted right up to the controls. Additionally, these big-diameter bars are specially formed to neatly accommodate and integrate the master cylinder, and allow for rotation to meet a customer’s lever placement. The net result is a smooth, totally custom look.

Both new 1½-inch handlebar sizes are offered for Road Glides and Road Kings in 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch heights, with Black or Chrome finishes. Those same heights and finishes are offered for the Street Glides, with the added choice of a pointed-top or round-top style. All this is available separately or as part of an applicationspecific EZ Install handlebar kit, and you’ll definitely want to tell customers about this.

Just as the company did with the 1¼- inch version of the EZ Install handlebars, Fat Baggers incorporated that unique two-piece design into the big bars. The two pieces securely lock together under a standard handlebar clamp.

For 2020, those popular EZ Install handlebars and handlebar kits from Fat Baggers, Inc. are now available in big, 1½-inch diameter sizes. They’re available in pointed-top (pictured) and round-top styles.

Originally offered in a 1¼-inch diameter bar, the EZ Install handlebars and handlebar kits have proven popular with customers as well as dealership technicians. Available in a both a pointed-top and round-top style, they create a bold styling statement when installed. Thanks to a unique, patent-pending two-piece, lock-together design, these bars are built for easy installation – just as their name implies. The two pieces connect and securely lock together under a standard size Harley-Davidson handlebar clamp. Fat Baggers couples that two-piece, easy-to-install design with billet machined tops and large, internally machined radius interiors to allow for smooth, snag-free wiring pulling. So, installing those handlebar kits – each one featuring the necessary wiring, cable and hydraulic line extensions – is a snap.

or 17 years this little mongrel of a Harley-Davidson – part 1957 and part 1972 – spent its life chained to a wall inside the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse, New York. The bike and that popular restauranttavern-blues bar belongs to John Stage, who first threw open the Dinosaur’s doors in 1988 and now those popular bar-b-que restaurants are all over northeast. “However, this bike and John’s history with it predates all of that,” says Shane Gatto, the savvy custom builder who rescued it from the restaurant and put it back on the street.

“John didn’t have much more than two nickels to rub together when he got this bike in the early ’80s,” his longtime pal adds with a laugh. “He found it in a barn!” Hardly a pristine original, someone in the Harley’s checkered past had put it together by mating two bikes decades apart, a 1957 Panhead and a 1972 Shovelhead. That’s the way Stage found it. The Panhead engine, transmission, front end and a good measure of its tin-work had been grafted into and onto the Shovelhead frame. “Apparently, that wasn’t an uncommon move back in the day,” says Gatto, the service

Stage rode his newfound prize around for years before the demands of that rapidly growing restaurant chain put motorcycle fun on the back burner. While he no longer had time to ride it, he was reluctant to part with the Harley, and wanted to keep the bike close by. With that, it became part of the décor inside that first ribs, brews and blues operation

in Syracuse. It stayed right there until about a year-and-ahalf ago when Stage, figuring that time was up, decided that his Harley really needed to be back on the street. Finding the right guy to make that happen was easy. Gatto, a bike builder well known to these pages thanks to his lineup of FatBook builds was also best friends with the manager of that Syracuse Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, and had known Stage for 10 years. Having Gatto handling the resurrection of his moto-prop Harley was an easy decision.

1957 HARLEY-DAVIDSON REBUILT BY SHANE GATTO & PAT CAREY UTICA HARLEY-DAVIDSON, CUSTOM DEPARTMENT

Miscellaneous parts like shock top covers, gaskets, various bushings, brake line parts, battery cables, electrical connectors are essential when resurrecting an old bike. The OldBook is where you’ll find them.

When it comes to classic looks, S&S Cycle’s chrome teardrop air cleaner assembly offers up a timeless appeal.

“John didn’t want a show bike,” Gatto recalls. “He just wanted his old Harley back, the way he remembered it.” So, Gatto and Utica Harley master tech Pat Carey began a complete rebuild, nose to tail, with the OldBook standing by. Stripping the bike down to its last nut and bolt, the engine and transmission were rebuilt, the wheels were laced, re-trued and fit with new bearings and brakes, and on and on it went. Nothing was overlooked, but nothing was overdone. “The bike’s always been a little sweaty, if you know what I mean,” Gatto explains. “It has patina. There’s a history here and we didn’t want to lose any of that.” While some things had to be found and replaced (restaurant patrons had taken souvenirs over the years), nearly everything else was carefully cleaned and put back into action. The exhaust system, for instance, is the original from the ’80s, the saddlebags and seat are the ones that were on the bike when John bought it. “Bringing all that back to life was a project all on its own,” Gatto says. At first he didn’t want to repaint the bike, but ultimately, he relented and the fresh top-coat looks surprisingly like an original 1957 paint job that has some years and miles on it.

Naturally, the Drag Specialties catalogs, especially the OldBook, played a huge role throughout this resurrection. There was a time, as Gatto explains, when finding everything needed to rebuild a 60-year-old motorcycle like this was a daunting task. Not anymore, not with the OldBook around. Right along with all the custom parts listed inside those pages, there’s all the everyday, meat-and-potatoes stuff, too, all the gaskets, seals, pistons, bearings and cables – you name it, it’s in there. Within the pages of that OldBook you and your customers will find everything needed to rebuild a vintage Harley and then keep it serviced when it’s back on the street. And for that, customers like John Stage, builders like Shane Gatto, and plenty of other riders and V-twin fans will be forever grateful. ■

Designed, developed and manufactured by NAMZ Custom Motorcycle Parts expressly for GMA, the harness and module kit comes with everything needed to wire up a pair of those threebutton GMA switches and have them operating without a hitch. The OEM color-coded wires are all 48-inches long and the module to control the operation of all the buttons measures just under 2-inches and can be mounted just about anywhere. There are also Deutsch 6-pin connectors and pins, heat-shrink tubing and easy-to-follow instructions, along with a full schematic to aid in wiring things up. Custom hand controls look great. Products Born from Passion Wayne’s first patent was for a high-flow performance petcock, and in recent decades the Pingel name has become synonymous with premium fuel valves. Pingel’s petcocks are available in a variety of styles, orientations and sizes, and all feature precision-machined brass components and fully rebuildable valve assemblies. On top of that, Pingel petcocks flow fuel like a fire hydrant.

T

he advice is often given to “make your passion your career.” That’s easier said than done, but if you’re after examples of folks who are doing it, the motorcycle industry is a great place to look.

Take Wayne and Donna Pingel for example. They created Pingel Enterprise, Inc. in 1967 and have spent the past 50plus years pursuing their interests in V-twin customization and drag racing. It’s an impressive career founded on a passion for motorcycles and excellent, functional products like made-in-America high-flow petcocks and wheel chocks. Wayne’s interest in motorcycles dates back to 1960 when he purchased his first two wheeler. A love for bikes and a hands-on, DIY approach led a young Wayne to open a small shop in Palatine, Illinois, where he and his soon-to-be-wife Donna customized choppers, rebuilt Harley-Davidson engines, and designed specialty parts. A partnership and business focus that started in a two-car garage has grown to fill a 51,000 square-foot facility and Wayne now holds over 40 patents.

Beyond the bottom of the fuel tank, Pingel offers fuel-system accessories like weld-on bungs and EFI-tocarburetor conversion adapters, plus inline fuel valves and cleanable inline filters. When bikes aren’t burning gas and need to be transported via trailer, Pingel’s lineup of wheel chocks is ready to help. Pingel’s removable wheel chocks are a good match for customers who use their trailers for more than just hauling bikes. These chrome-plated, heavy-duty chocks secure with T-bolt hold-downs for quick and easy toolless installation and removal. Pingel also has a truck-bed specific wheel chock designed to work in the corrugated beds found in most of today’s pickups.

PROFILE & PRODUCTS

Quality On Tap

Pingel’s Cycle Jaws wheel chock is constructed from thickwalled zinc-plated steel for durability, and this clamping chock provides maximum tire contact. An adjustable stop accommodates different diameter wheels while a smooth-spinning screw drive applies even, firm clamping force to the bike’s tire. With no bulky hardware to roll over, the Cycle Jaws offers effortless roll in/roll out use and is ideal for the garage, race paddock, truck, or trailer. The Pingel product line has expanded and evolved over the years, but V-twins and drag racing have remained the focus, and Wayne and Donna continue to manage the business. After all, when your passion is your career, it makes showing up for work a lot more enjoyable. ■

Cover Bike Tees and Tumblers The FatBook cover bike shirts are printed on a Black Frost (charcoal gray) material, while the OldBook bike is featured on a Navy Frost (blue-gray) material. The bike design is printed on the back of the shirt, and there is smaller artwork on the left front chest. The 2020 cover bikes can also be found on 14-ounce drink tumblers. The dual-wall stainless steel and copper lining provide vacuum insulation that will keep drinks hot or cold. The cover bike artwork is printed on the powdercoated body of the tumbler. Up top, a leak-proof screw-on lid includes a push-button lock to make sure everything stays secure when the tumbler is stowed away. Each tumbler comes packaged in a protective drawstring bag.

T

he debut of the 2020 FatBook and OldBook means that dealers get to check out two new gorgeous custom motorcycles on the covers. To celebrate these one-of-a-kind builds, Drag Specialties is once again offering T-shirts and drink tumblers that feature the FatBook and OldBook cover bikes. The T-shirts will be available in a men’s contemporary cut as well as a women’s V-neck. These aren’t just boring, illfitting shirts. Both the men’s and women’s versions have modern styling, including a rib-knit, wider cut neck and a narrow rib-knit hem on the sleeves. The material is a 4½-ounce poly/cotton/rayon blend, which ensures a soft feel and wrinkle-free washing.

Drag also has 14-ounce drink tumblers featuring Drag Specialties cover bikes.

As always, the cover bikes show off a selection of parts that are available through Drag Specialties. For 2020, the FatBook cover is graced by a 2019 FLHT Standard customized by Hofmann Designs. The bike includes a lot more modifications than what can be seen on the FatBook cover, especially when it comes to the extensive amount of work done to the motor and driveline. Arlen Ness provided the cam, rocker box and lifter block covers that give the engine such a distinct look. Above the engine, the Drag Specialties Predator III Double Diamond Seat offers style and comfort. This year’s OldBook features a 1956 Custom Harley-Davidson Panhead built by Cabana Dan’s Customs. One of the most notable details is the 21-inch Drag Specialties 40-spoke laced wheel up front. The laced wheels are matched with Pirelli MT66 tires to complete the classic styling. Another feature of the Panhead that jumps out at the viewer is the exhaust, which is a Biltwell Builder’s Exhaust Kit. ■

eventy-five dollars won’t get you very far these days – it barely covers the cost of gasoline to fill an average car’s gas tank. But 50-some years ago, $75 was enough to get a young man named Arlin Fatland from his hometown of Ames, Iowa, to Denver, Colorado. Arlin had just been discharged from the U.S. Army, serving honorably in the 101st Airborne Division, when he packed his car and set out to start a new life in the Golden State of California. Wait, Colorado isn’t California. OK, then. What gives? We’ll leave the explanation to Arlin. “Before leaving for California my dad asked me how much money I had for the trip. I told him, and he said, ‘$75 won’t get you very far,’” Arlin recalls. Turns out that father knew best during this father/son exchange. By the time young Arlin reached the Rocky Mountains’ imposing Front Range his wallet had become rather thin. Moreover, those steep and jagged mountain peaks – the same intimidating sight that greeted pioneers years ago along the Oregon Trail – appeared daunting. “I looked at those big mountains and figured maybe I should stop there,” says Arlin about his westward-ho trip. And with that, Denver became his new home. Arlin promptly got a job with a personal luggage manufacturer, but his love for motorcycles soon landed him more appealing employment at Denver’s fledging Kawasaki and Yamaha dealership. A short time later his

friend and former high school classmate, Jim Taylor, joined him in Denver, and the two bachelors did what many young men do at that age – they worked hard and partied harder. Little did they realize at the time that they also were laying the groundwork for what would become 2 Wheelers, an all-purpose motorcycle shop. See, one day in 1970 they took the plunge, renting space in a building on Denver’s West 38th Avenue so they could service dirtbikes and other motorcycles with small-bore engines. Word of the industrious shop spread, and BSA and Triumph owners began frequenting the shop for service and repairs. Eventually Harleys could be seen at 2 Wheelers, too. By then Arlin and Jim had bought the deed to the entire building, and the business grew, soon expanding to rented space across the street, and later into the old gas station next to it. Both rented properties became 2 Wheelers’ new service department at about the same time that Arlin and Jim signed on with Drag Specialties, and business only got better. By 1980 the thriving shop in Denver known as 2 Wheelers had become a major destination for bikers all along the Front Range. It was a familiar place where bikers could count on quality parts and service for their rides. Arlin also started building custom bikes to help promote the business, and Jim manned the parts counter, selling more and more products from Drag Specialties’ growing inventory.

BIKE BUILDING BEGINNINGS

By that time, another builder with a similar first name, Arlen Ness, had entered the picture and they became close friends. Arlin and Arlen started spending time together at bike runs and rallies, even sharing tips on how to make their respective businesses better and more profitable. Recalls former and long-time Drag employee Jim Betlach, “Arlin and Arlen would be the two carefree guys with cowboy hats at bike rallies. They were very close, and very influential in the custom-bike market.” Adds Arlin Fatland’s long-time Drag Specialties sales rep Jayson Specht, “He and Arlen Ness were like brothers.” Indeed, they shared a kindred spirit with several other notable bike builders of the time, too. As Tom Motzko,

This 1969 generator Shovel was Arlin's first build for the Car and Bike Show in Denver, Colorado.

Drag’s vendor development manager, recently put it, “Both Arlin and Arlen were part of the nucleus of early bike builders, including guys like Barry Cooney, Donnie Smith and Dave Perewitz.” It was certainly a pivotal, even colorful, time in the growth of the custom bike business.

2 WHEELERS/ARLIN FATLAND

A lineup of choppers and other customs outside of 2 Wheelers shortly after Arlin and Jim purchase the building in 1974.

Eventually those bike builders, along with a few other key players within the custom bike industry, formed the core of a loosely knit group known as Hamsters USA, a group that has gone on to became one of the motorcycle industry’s leading charity supporters. By 1987 Arlin and Jim had recognized the growing potential of the annual Black Hills Rally in South Dakota so they established a retail outpost in Sturgis. The following year they created another satellite shop in Daytona Beach for Daytona Bike Week, prompting many Drag Specialties vendors to work overtime! Throughout it all, that original shop on West 38th Avenue remained the epicenter for 2 Wheelers, and business thrived. Before long the parts and accessories department’s inventory vied for wall space with pictures, posters and other biker paraphernalia that also hung from the ceiling, such that the shop assumed its own character. “His store had everything,” Betlach says. “You could go in there and buy practically anything for your bike, even buy the first issues of the popular custom motorcycle magazines at the time.”

Since it opened, 2 Wheelers has been a destination for bikers and riders throughout Colorado's Front Range.

No doubt, 2 Wheelers became home for bikers throughout the Front Range, and many was the time that Arlin and Jim pulled city permits so they could close the street for block parties and bike runs. The Christmas toy run, held every Thanksgiving Weekend, was a favorite, and 2 Wheelers also became a regular participant at Colorado’s annual bike swap meet every February.

“Thank you, all! I want to give special thanks to past and present employees Dave John, Al Bolger, Steve Ruby, Donna Maupin and Doug Samson who have helped with 2 Wheelers’ success over the 50 years. And also thank you to our loyal and honorable customers who have made 2 Wheelers a part of their riding experiences during the past 50 years.” — Arlin Fatland

SEASON OF CHANGE

Change is inevitable, though, and perhaps the first major event to affect 2 Wheelers happened in 2000 when Jim passed away. Business continued, but about a dozen years later the landlord of the rental property across the street sold out, prompting 2 Wheelers to shut down its service department.

If you visit Arlin and 2 Wheelers anytime in 2020, you can bet you'll see this banner commemorating the shop's 50th anniversary.

2 WHEELERS/ARLIN FATLAND

Change happened elsewhere, too. Specifically, Daytona Beach, Florida, where the annual springtime Bike Week has taken on a new image, enough so that Arlin chose to close 2 Wheelers’ Daytona store at the conclusion of 2019 Bike Week.

82

“Daytona Bike Week has changed, it isn’t the same as it was 15 or so years ago,” Arlin says. “We decided to concentrate on Sturgis, and of course our store in Denver, for coming years.” In the meantime, another familiar name within the custom bike world will occupy the Daytona property – Arlin’s long-time friend Billy Lane now has the keys to the Daytona shop where he’ll be headquartered for future rallies. Nowadays, it’s business as usual as 2020 marks 2 Wheelers 50th anniversary in business. The Sturgis shop remains a popular destination for rally goers every summer, and the Denver store hasn’t changed much during the past five decades. In fact, the shop on West 38th Avenue continues to be the place where custom bike owners gravitate for custom parts and great service.

Arlin and his 1985 FXR that he customized using one of Corbin's Warbird kits.

When discussing 2 Wheelers’ success, Tom Motzko might have said it best, “Perhaps the best word to describe Arlin is that he’s committed to the industry. He knows what parts sell. He’s kept his finger on it all those years. His dedication even helped land him in the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame.” And with that, it’s worth pointing out that one thing hasn’t changed at 2 Wheelers. Visit the shop on West 38th Avenue and after you walk through the front door you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a time warp. As one visitor who hadn’t been to the shop in years described his recent return visit, “It was like stepping back into 1975. The shop is still filled with posters and pictures … from the 1970s!” Clearly, there’s something to be said about a tradition as compelling as that of 2 Wheelers in Denver, Colorado, a shop that’s been among Drag Specialties’ leading dealers for nearly half a century and counting. ■

agnum Shielding’s highlight at the Louisville NVP was its economical XR Stainless DOT handle installation kits. Complete kits are available for almost every year going back to 1996. There were 47 new kits added for the 2020 season. The kits include all of the required cables and terminated wiring extensions as well as DOT brake lines for ABS and non-ABS applications. The brake lines incorporate OE style fittings and manifolds, as opposed to plumbed together lines, for fast, easy, professional looking installations. According to Magnum Shielding, with DOT compliance being a legal requirement for on-road use, a popular question the company often gets is, “How can you tell if an aftermarket brake line assembly complies with the FMVSS-106 Standards for safety and performance?” The easiest way to know is to look for proper identification or labeling on the brake line itself. For starters, the brake hose must have a stripe. For the rest of the labeling requirements, manufacturers have a few options. The first option is to interrupt the stripe with the letters DOT, the

manufacturer’s registered name or symbol, the date of manufacture, and HR for the hose rating. A second option for manufacturers is (instead of printing directly on the hose) to have a freely moving band etched with the manufacturer’s registered designation or symbol along with the letters DOT. For option three, the information can be stamped directly on the fittings. Magnum uses this last method for identifying their registered designation (MAG-XR), DOT, and the date of manufacture for traceability purposes. ■

A Timeless Design for Classic Choppers The Signature II is one of LePera’s oldest, most popular seat designs. Designed to provide a classic look for choppers and rigid bikes, the Signature II comes in one-piece and two-piece versions.

I

t’s easy to find new motorcycle products that are designed to look vintage, but it’s rare to find a product that really is a vintage design. LePera Motorcycle Seats has some classic styles that have been in production since the company’s founding more than 40 years ago. One of those seats is the Signature II, which has been in constant production since the 1970s. The Signature II is available in both a one-piece and two-piece design. The Signature II is specifically made for

choppers and rigid bikes, offering a classic style that is still popular even decades after its debut. Rigid seats helped build LePera’s reputation, and designs like the Signature II will always be a part of the company’s lineup. The Signature II seats feature a 10-inch wide driver seating area and a 6-inch wide passenger seating area. The narrow passenger area fits neatly over a chopper’s rear end to flow with the aesthetics of the bike. The Signature II twopiece seat has more dramatic styling than the one-piece version, making it a big style statement. The seat’s molded foam foundation sits on a 16-gauge powdercoated steel base plate, a traditional, handcrafted method that is as classic as the Signature II’s design. Underneath, a carpeted bottom protects the fender. Each seat arrives with a universal nose bracket and all of the necessary hardware for installation. Like all of the designs from LePera, the Signature II seats are completely made in the USA. ■

Reduce Cylinder Head Temperatures

I

nstalling a smooth, streamlined JIMS ForceFlow Cylinder Head Cooler will help keep a Milwaukee-Eight Softail running much cooler when it counts the most.

In fact, once switched on, the ForceFlow is automatically regulated by a thermostat that monitors cylinder-head temperature, allowing it to drop the temperature by as much as 100 degrees. That’s significant, something more than welcome on a hot summer afternoon or whenever a rider gets stuck in stop-and-go traffic. The ForceFlow cooling kit features a high-powered fan that is available with either a Black or Chrome finish for the housing. The bolt-on kit includes a horn, that regulating thermostat, and all the necessary hardware and wiring. It also includes a JIMS Coil Relocation Kit, which consists of a new mounting bracket and extended-length plug wires; it is required to make room for the ForceFlow. A great addition on any M-8 Softail, JIMS highly recommends the ForceFlow Cylinder Head Cooler for performance engines.

JIMS ForceFlow Cylinder Head Cooler will help keep a Milwaukee-Eight Softail running much cooler when it counts the most, such as on a hot summer day or when stuck in stop-and-go traffic.

By the way, that Coil Relocation Kit is available separately and is a great idea for customizing the look of that engine. By re-positioning the coil below the neck, and in-between the frame downtubes on the front of the bike, the aesthetics of a Softail instantly change for the better. The look of the bike on the left side becomes all engine, a dramatic change from the stock appearance. ■

Exceptional Electrical Components Biketronics’ SmartEqualizer works to normalize the electrical load and blink rate when LED turn signals are added to a motorcycle.

One of Biketronics’ best sellers is the company’s plug-in lighting controls, which add safety and style to your customers’ bikes. The Tailbones module (p/n 0605-3002, or p/n 0605-3008) converts the rear turn signals and taillight into both running and brake lights, increasing visibility on the road. If LED turn signals have been added, the SmartEqualizer (p/n 0605-3005, or p/n 2050-0079) works to normalize the electrical load and blink rate, and it’s as easy to install as snapping together a few factory-style connectors. For your customers who value high-fidelity sound while riding, Biketronics has amps, speakers, antennas and CD/radio adapter kits to fully upgrade and optimize your clients’ sound systems.

The Tailbones module from Biketronics converts the rear turn signals and taillight into both running and brake lights, increasing visibility on the road.

ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS

Quality Counts

The Titan two-channel (p/n 4405-0268) and fourchannel (p/n 4405-0282) amps are surprisingly compact and incredibly powerful, with a 180-watt rating per channel. Not only that, the scaled signal coming from Titan amps is super clean thanks to the use of patented Universal Class-D amplification technology. This helps ensure efficiency and reduces power draw on the bike’s electrical system, and as an added safety measure Biketronics’ own StatorGuard circuitry is in place to protect the bike’s stator and regulator/rectifier.

Let your customers know that if they want to ditch their OE vertical antenna, the dipole Hogtenna is a great upgrade that is small enough to stash inside a bike’s fairing.

The four-channel Titan amp is compact and incredibly powerful, with a 180-watt rating per channel. It is designed to provide great sound in all conditions.

A

s an electrical engineer at Hewlett-Packard, if you had told Mike Meehan that he’d later be designing and building audio and electrical equipment for Harley-Davidsons, he would have laughed. However, nearly two decades after leaving his desk at H-P, Meehan’s own company, Biketronics, is going strong with a refined lineup of high-performance electrical offerings for Harleys. From lighting accessories to speakers and amps, Biketronics has it, and it’s all made in America and backed by a lifetime warranty.

For great sound, Titan amps should be matched with Titan II coaxial speakers, which are available in a 7.1inch diameter (p/n 4405-0283 for FLH, p/n 4405-0322 for FLTR). Made in house at Biketronics’ Moscow, Idaho, facility alongside all of the company’s other products, the Titan II speakers use surfactant-treated paper cones, copper voice coils, an ABS chassis, and heavy duty magnets. Meehan’s designs focus on clean, full sound and durability, and with the 7.1-inch Titan II speakers riders get slightly more size than the typical 6.5-inch setup for richer low-end sound. As an upgrade over the OE vertical antenna, the Dipole Hogtenna is a great option. This horizontally oriented antenna is small enough to be concealed inside the fairing, and the unit’s directionality can offer a cleaner, stronger signal out on the road. Biketronics is a small but mighty company that believes in quality and customer service. Mike Meehan, his wife Donna, and their 25 employees all stand behind their products so you can feel confident offering them to your customers. ■
