“Social Distancing” is already being seen out on the roads. Todd Olson photo

A

s this issue was going to press, a number of cities and states were beginning to relax the lock-down regulations. It will still be some time before baseball and other large sports gatherings are happening again, but I think recreational motorcycle riding will soon come to the forefront of things to do. How great does that sound to just get out of the house and hit the road again? Of course, some responsible social distancing techniques—including masks—will need to be included for gas and food stops, but I know motorcycle riders will figure it out. Also, newly-revised federal guidelines were announced that said powersports employees, in manufacturing, distribution and retail sales, rentals and maintenance, are essential workers. That revision confirmed that motorcycle retail stores could remain open just as their automotive counterparts around the country have during this time of stay-at-home orders. Essential? Of course you are. As you well know, many of your customers are first responders who ride their bikes to work at the hospitals, fire departments, police stations and other organizations that are on the front lines of our war against the Coronavirus. Add to that, the UPS, Fed Ex, US Postal workers and others keeping the distribution

of products flowing. We have to do our part to keep them rolling and Drag Specialties is there for you with all of the service items needed – tires, chains, oil and whatever else is needed.

In This Issue We celebrate two Drag Specialties vendors in this issue that are both celebrating 50 years in business – Arlen Ness and Performance Machine. Amazing that the founding of both companies that are so well-known today happened the same year. We congratulate them both and invite you to read their stories. In this issue we also feature a cool makeover of a 2019 Harley XL done by our friends at Suburban Motors. Plus, the previously announced Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race at Laguna Seca is coming up soon, and we provide an update on some of the companies who are planning to participate. In addition, be sure to check out the news about E-bikes coming your way this fall! ■

• Chance Darling from Barnett said, “We are trying to keep it simple and clean. Not wanting to use lots of expensive bolt-on parts like most of these guys will be.” • Luke Leatherman from Feuling sent photos of their machine, which is not complete yet, but some initial testing has been done. He added that Ben Bostrom will be racing their motorcycle in the event. Bostrom, the 1998 AMA Superbike Champion, was a newsmaker at Laguna Seca the following year when he won one of the two legs of the World Superbike race. • Paul Langley from S&S Cycle reported, “We just received the stock Indian motorcycle and have dismantled it. Regarding the rider, we have three legitimate choices, but have not made the selection yet.” • David Echert from Saddlemen did not divulge specifics about their machine, other than it will be prepared and ridden by Pikes Peak race veteran Michael Woolaway from Deus Ex Machina.

Feuling will feature their many performance products for HarleyDavidsons, including their oil pump, Camchest kit and other items.

LeMans Corporation Jumps Into E-Bike Market COMPANY WILL DISTRIBUTE BIKES AND ACCESSORIES

L

eMans Corporation, parent company of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited, has partnered with Intense to distribute a special powersports-inspired version of its Tazer MX E-bike as well as a line of related parts, garments and accessories.

The agreement marks the first time a company – the LeMans Corporation – has moved to bring the growing E-bike market to powersports distribution. “Pedal-assist bicycles are quickly becoming a significant segment in our industry.” said Jeff Derge, VP of Sales for LeMans. “Many of the motorcycle OEMs are now selling E-bikes in Europe and the USA, and offering models that cover many riding styles. E-MTB, Road, Gravel, Commuter and Urban are some of most popular styles that are interesting for the Powersports channel.” The company is launching the Intense Tazer MX and accessories in early Fall. “We’ll have products and experts on hand to speak with you about this new category,” Derge said. “And, like always, we will have the top brands and manufacturer representatives showing their new and top-selling products from every category in Powersports and American V-twin.”

The Badlands Sequential Illuminator™ provide sequential flashing turn signals for any 3LED’s (per side) with built-in run & brake light & Load Equalizer™ features! That’s an all-in-one module, harness, plug-n-play & a LIFETIME WARRANTY! So save your money & some space under your seat using the industry leading “originals” since 1990.

The LeMans Corporation said that it welcomes this opportunity to bring awareness and products of this growing market to its network of dealers. “Intense has always engaged in and been inspired by motorsports with motocross and off-road motorcycling closely tied to our company’s history and products,” said Intense CEO Jeff Steber. “With the development of the Tazer, we created a true E-performance category in bicycling – innovating how E-MTB’s ride and perform while elevating the overall performance of the entire segment. With our new partnership with Drag Specialties, we will be able to deliver a powersports-industry specific Tazer model to motorsports dealerships that’s made just for them.” Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited dealers and sales reps got their first look at the E-bike at the recent 2020 NVP Product Expo in Louisville, Kentucky in February, where parent company LeMans Corporation hosted Intense LLC executives and the Tazer MX E-bike. The company had set up in a booth in the center of the show at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

Plenty of ice, excited crowds, studded tires and a big lineup of motorcycles ensured that the 2020 Drag Race on Ice was a success.

Harleys On Ice V-TWIN WINTER RACING IN QUEBEC Mélanie Vachon photos

A

utomobiles have been racing on frozen lakes since the late 19th century, and in the 1960s and 1970s, there were two major auto ice-racing championships – the North American Ice Racing championship and the European Ice Racing Championship.

It goes without saying that if it has a motor and can be raced, it’s likely been raced on ice. For the most part, motorcycle ice racing has typically involved flat-trackstyle bikes or off-road bikes, riding Speedway style on variety of tracks on rinks, lakes or frozen ponds. That is, until Jocelyn “Jesy” Renaud and Karine Rowsell of the Classic Steel motorcycle shop in Lery, Quebec decided to go ice racing. A Parts Canada and Drag Specialties dealer, Classic Steel is a custom V-twin shop located about 30km (19 miles) southwest of Montreal. It’s on the coast of Lac-Saint-Louis and the St. Lawrence River where finding ice has never been a problem. Renaud had been out to watch auto ice racing and wanted to give it a try on a motorcycle. In 2018 he studded up the tires on his Harley-Davidson and went out on his own. He started to talk to some other ice racers of the more traditional kind, and asked if he could run the straight away on their oval. Photos of the ice-racing V-twin quickly hit social media and there was enough attention that he and his partner, Rowsell, decided they might be onto something. They launched the inaugural Harley Drag Race on Ice in 2019.

Renaud and Rowsell introduced the Harley Drag Race on Ice event to V-twin shops in the area. Seeing the overwhelming positive responses, they were more confident than ever that this needed to be not just a day on the pond, but a full-on event on the river. A food truck, porta-potties, and a microphone, along with a ¼ mile straight on the frozen river to track the 14 registered riders were all they needed. Even with all the planning, the two grossly underestimated the response as cars lined up along both sides of the highway waiting to find a way to the track to see the spectacle.

Harley-Davidson took the win for the dealer class.

For the 2020 run of the event in February, they were better prepared with more food trucks, facilities, and support from the local police and municipality. Good thing, too. This year’s race featured 32 registered riders and attracted more than 2,500 spectators. The couple couldn’t be happier with the results of their first two events and are building an even bigger show for 2021. With more police and municipal support, EMTs, insurance, wagon shuttles from various parking lots, and a cleared skating area for the kids, they are projecting between 4,000 and 5,000 spectators. There is even talk of stretching the event out over two days and offering weekend passes. Renaud is thrilled that they have made the race an event where a family can have some fun. “Young and old, everyone has a big smile on their face from the beginning of the morning to the end of the day,” he says. ■

Michelin’s Daytona Press Days INTRODUCING THE COMMANDER III

JUNE 2020

To underscore this connection Michelin Commander III was named the Official Tire of Daytona Beach Bike Week 2020, during which time Michelin turned members of the motorcycle press loose on those new tires. The Commander III, they said, would be even better than the acclaimed Commander II. It would have better wet-weather grip and handling, better ride characteristics, better compounds,

better mileage, just better overall – claims all backed with internal and third-party testing. And there isn’t just one Commander III. There are two, one designed especially for Touring bike applications, and one aimed squarely at all the V-twin Cruisers. And those invited riders got to experience them both at Bike Week 2020. Set up as a two-day riding experience, Michelin provided a full fleet of V-twins for everyone to ride. Both Touring and Cruiser models were set up with the new Commander III tires so everyone could get the full experience. In addition to the full contingent of the staff from Michelin USA who were on hand to organize things and help out, Michelin also brought in members of the Commander III’s actual design and engineering team from Michelin’s R&D center in Ladoux, France to explain the extensive R&D that went into this latest product. Anyone with any questions about the Commander IIIs received an answer on the spot by someone definitely in-the-know. Divided into two groups each day, Touring and Cruiser, the Cruiser group split into smaller groups to explore Daytona and all the Bike Week hot spots and hangouts. The Touring group, meanwhile, headed off on a guided ride over the highways and byways of the Sunshine State to visit some of the nearby Florida cities. All of this, of course, happening on those new Michelin Commander III tires. At the end of each day’s ride both groups met up at Michelin’s booth at the Daytona International Speedway to relax and enjoy one-onone interaction with the full Michelin team, including those tire designers from France. “Michelin developed this tire line to optimize the riding enjoyment on a V-twin, with a focus on improving tread life and wet grip versus the already widely accepted Commander II tire line,” Michelin’s Shane Messner said way back at that Biketoberfest 2019 preview. While there was no rain or wet

weather to ride through during the Bike Week 2020, everyone got to experience exactly what Michelin meant by saying the Commander III was the company’s full commitment to “Total Performance” for both Touring and Cruiser tires. Improving on the Commander II couldn’t have been easy, but with Commander III Michelin has certainly upped the ante. Without compromising any of the long-life, high-mileage characteristics of the Commander II (actually increasing tread life on the Touring version), the new Commander III tires bring a lot more into play. There are all-new 100 percent Silica compounds and new tread patterns featuring wider grooves in the Commander III Cruiser version. With a new carcass featuring their tried-and-true Amplified Density Technology (ADT) designed to enhance rider feedback, resist centrifugal growth, reduce weight and increase stability the Commander III is a pretty refined product. The Commander III also features a more rounded profile than the Commander II, a profile said to optimize a bigger contact patch across the tire. The aim, Michelin says, was to optimize stress within the contact patch to extend tread life. This rounded profile, they say, also offers riders a more planted feel during cornering with optimal stability and comfort. The patented Premium Touch sidewalls give the Commander III a distinct look, too. It’s a high-contrast sidewall styling, Michelin explains, developed especially to enhance the look of a V-twin motorcycle – Touring or Cruiser. In the months to come you’ll be hearing a lot about these Michelin Commander III Touring and Commander III Cruiser. Those magazine testers and online influencers who got to experience these newest tires at Bike Week are sure to weigh in. ■

FIVE DECADES OF CUSTOM STYLE To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Performance Machine built this hot rod Bagger around a 2003 Harley-Davidson Road Glide. This performance Bagger is largely considered one of the first examples of the now booming custom niche.

the company’s original name. It was “Chopper Springlide Machine” when the company first opened in 1970, but then changed it to Performance Machine, because, well, that sounds much better. With that, Perry assumes the narrative about the company he first founded in Paramount, California.

Well, when it comes to the custom motorcycle world one way to do it is to give a wheel some serious style and panache. You know, make it look cool. That’s precisely what Perry Sands, founder of Performance Machine, did in 1995 when his company offered its first billet aluminum custom motorcycle wheels, an invention that had a huge impact on the motorcycle aftermarket industry ever after.

“I was making a springer front fork for choppers at the time, so I figured the company name had to have the words ‘chopper’ and ‘springer’ in it,” he says. Made sense, but within a few years – 1974 to be precise – Perry officially adopted the current company name Performance Machine. That same year his son Roland, who would later form is own company and carry on his father’s creative streak, Roland Sands Design, was born.

Performance Machine’s billet wheel introduction occurred during the company’s 25th anniversary and this year the California-based company marks its 50th year in business. Here’s another point of interest – Performance Machine isn’t

Perry and his company rode the wile chopper wave during the free-spirited 1970s, at which time his machine shop performed some cutting edge design work, including

50TH ANNIVERSARY Back in 1980, Perry Sands added a state-of-the-art CNC machine, an investment that opened up a whole new market for his growing business.

developing disc brake kits for various wire spoke wheels and cast wheels that the other members of California’s burgeoning cottage chopper industry were selling. PM’s brake kits enabled many custom chopper builders to equip their bikes with disc brakes, which were considered high tech for their time. Mechanical expanding drum brakes dominated the scene during those years so adding hydraulic-operated discs to a chopper was a big deal. The center (literally) of PM’s brake kits was a spool hub Perry designed, and later he developed his own brake caliper. “Finally, in 1974, I sat down to design my own brake caliper. It took me two years to develop it,” Perry says. The results paid off handsomely for Perry and his aspiring company. Overnight Performance Machine brakes became a standard among many custom builders. The company even adopted a catchy sales motto for its line of brakes – Go Fast Wheels Need Stop Fast Brakes. PM itself was moving fast and its product line continued expanding.

By 1980 Perry was in a position to purchase a CNC machine, state-of-the-art stuff at the time and a big investment for his comparatively small business. “That opened a whole new market for me,” he says, and his clientele included various nearby aerospace companies as well. But first and foremost, Perry’s heart remained in the motorcycle camp. As a teenager he grew up riding motorcycles, and before he launched his own company he attended Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California. He studied industrial arts, learning about metal work, welding and machining, which he applied to custom bikes he built or modified for his friends. In fact, many of his college course projects centered on fabricating custom bike parts. He also moonlighted creating even more parts during after-hours from his part-time job. At the time Perry worked at a nearby machine shop and in the nocturnal hours he’d commandeer the shop lathe and machinery, reset their settings to suit his needs, grind out a new part or two and then reset the tools before the day crew reported in for work the following morning. “I got pretty good at set up by then,” he says. When Perry Sands first opened the doors to his custom parts business, it was called Chopper Springlide Machine. Soon after he renamed it Performance Machine and the rest is history.

BOOMING ’90s Perry never expected his business to grow like it did during the 1990s, but boy did it grow. In 1992 his brother Ted Sands joined him as his marketing and advertising manager. The first thing brother Ted proposed was that Performance Machine should affiliate itself with a major national distributor. That decision coincided with another chapter in PM’s history. As Perry tells it, “Fred Fox used to come see me two or three times a year suggesting I should let Drag Specialties distribute my products,” he says. Eventually, Perry told his brother to see what kind of deal he could muster with Drag.

Perry Sands was 19 when he built his first chopper, dubbed the Peyote Puffer. Built around a 1946 Indian Chief, this custom ride featured a chopped and molded frame and a hot pink, flamed paint job.

It was a fateful, and very successful, decision. Performance Machine joined the Drag Specialties family of vendors, and since then has grown into one an important aftermarket partner seeing big growth thanks to the relationship. This design and testing capacity currently enables PM to manufacture some of their strongest and lightest forged wheels yet in the Raceline product offering with the Pro-AM, Assault and Revolution designs. And speaking of professors, Perry didn’t earn enough credits during his stint at Long Beach City College to gain an Associate of Arts degree before setting course to establish his career as a machinist. “I was about four units shy of graduating,” he says. That said, after founding and nurturing his successful company the administrators at LBCC saw fit to award Perry with an honorable AA degree and induct him into community college’s Hall of Fame. Not bad for a guy who spent a good portion of his college days fabricating some of his earliest chopper parts on machine equipment that didn’t belong to him. But then, isn’t that why we have institutions of higher learning in the first place — to teach inquisitive minds how to build for a better tomorrow? No story about Perry Sands and the growth of Performance Machine is complete without mention of another creative custom motorcycle mind connected to the company’s legacy. Like his father Perry, Roland Sands’ love of motorcycling world led to a career in both motorcycle racing and motorcycle design, including helping develop products for Performance Machine.

Roland wasn’t the only notable name designing products for PM, as he was joined by Jesse James, Jason Tiedeken, and a talented internal design team who have kept PM on the cutting edge of cool. Add to that the fact that virtually every top custom bike builder in the industry was using PM products in the 1990s and beyond. Roland’s company, Roland Sands Design, is now a stand-alone company offering a variety of products, many made by Performance Machine at the current factory in La Palma, California. Both companies continue to help pack the FatBook and OldBook with new and innovative products.

THE FUTURE AND BEYOND Today, led by powersports veteran Chris Lindstrom, Performance Machine continues its design and innovation success with a vast lineup of custom wheels, brake systems, air cleaners, controls and accessories for Harley-Davidsons and many other brands. Connecting with riders is a critical part of the equation as well. That’s why you’ll see PM product experts sharing their knowledge with customers at shows all over the country. Performance Machine’s reputation wasn’t built on just great design, but outstanding quality. With a high-tech manufacturing facility (that completes ISO certification in 2020), a focus on great process, and continual investment in top talent, Performance Machine is well positioned for the market today and opportunities in powersports for years to come. For years Perry had been touting “It’s just a motorcycle,” and for 50 years Performance Machine’s focus is making it a better motorcycle, with high-quality parts, great performance and a look that makes for a lineup of standout products. ■

SEATS

Vinyl Collector

New Seat Options for Baggers The Predator III Extended Reach seat is built for your customers who need some extra leg room while in the saddle. It moves the rider back about 1½ inches compared to the stock seat.

B

agger seats need to be comfortable, but what works for one rider may not work for another. Drag Specialties Seats has expanded its Bagger fitments to include choices that offer more or less legroom and solo or two-up comfort. The four new seat fitments are available in Drag’s high-quality automotive vinyl, offering riders a lower-cost seat with high-quality perks. The Predator III Extended Reach, 2 Up Predator, Forward Position 2 Up Predator, and EZ-On Low-profile Solo Forward Position seats will all fit 2008-2020 Baggers.

Predator seat has a driver position similar to the OEM seat, while the Forward Position version moves the rider forward 2½ inches on FLTRX/FLHX, two inches on FLHR and 1 inch on FLHT models.

Each seat begins with a 3/16-inch ABS thermoformed seat base that provides a perfect fit. A carpeted bottom and rubber bumpers protect the bike’s paint. On top of the base, molded flexible urethane foam gives each seat its unique shape while ensuring maximum comfort and styling.

The EZ-On Low-profile Solo Forward Position seat has a lot of detail packed into its name, but that’s because the seat has a lot of details, too. The solo seat moves the rider forward 1¾ inches and lowers the rider by an inch compared to the factory seat.

All of those features are topped with high-quality automotive vinyl, which will provide long-lasting looks and reliability. The vinyl is resistant to both fading and mildew, and it is easy to clean.

The foam curves up to provide 5½ inches of back support to help a rider feel stable in the saddle, while the narrow front has classic solo seat styling. The Drag Specialties Seats EZ Mount system means that there are no tools needed for taking the seat on and off, so the swap is an easy one. The solo seat comes in smooth vinyl or a Diamond Suede finish. ■

Just like all Drag Specialties seats, these four Bagger seats are handmade in the USA at the company’s headquarters in Rogers, Minnesota. The Predator III Extended Reach seat moves the rider back approximately 1½ inches compared to the stock seat. The contoured seating area is combined with an ample 6-inch tall driver back support to ensure a comfortable ride even when adding up the miles. The front of the seat narrows so that there is plenty of leg clearance. The Predator III Extended Reach seat is available in a smooth vinyl finish or Drag’s Double Diamond stitch with thread choices of black, silver or red.

Braking for Baggers

EBC’s oversized rotors measure in at 14 inches, a big increase over the standard 11½inch style. They provide improved brake feel for big Baggers.

aggers are made to carry a lot of, well, baggage. Not only do the bikes themselves need to be able to support all of that additional weight, but so do the brakes. Brake rotors and pads are put under additional strain when a bike is fully loaded, which is why EBC rotors and pads for Touring/Bagger models are designed to withstand both the weight and the long miles.

Ultra-lightweight but strong, EBC Vee-Series rotors provide performance and style. The VR529 stainless-steel rotors for touring models are cut with the company’s Vee profile, which reduces weight while making a style statement. The hand-built Vee rotors also improve performance, offering increased braking capabilities compared to the stock rotors.

While function is always the most important factor when it comes to brakes, EBC also knows that riders want to personalize their stopping power. For rotors, Touring riders can opt for a direct OEM replacement, a Vee design or a 14-inch oversized Vee design. These rotors all pair perfectly with EBC’s legendary HH sintered brake pads, resulting in a braking setup that increases performance while looking good.

Touring riders who want a big boost in aesthetics as well as improved brake feel can get their stopping done with the new EBC OSVR529-14 rotors. These oversized rotors measure in at 14 inches, a big increase over the standard 11½-inch style.

EBC’s MD529 rotor is a direct OEM replacement for Harley-Davidson Touring models. Made at the company’s headquarters in the U.K., the rotors start life as German mill-rolled precision stainless steel. The steel is laser cut, heat treated and tempered to ensure premium quality and durability. Because these rotors are a direct replacement for the stock rotors, there are no setup changes necessary. Add a new set of EBC HH sintered pads, and that’s it.

Each rotor style goes hand-in-hand with EBC HH sintered brake pads. A longtime flagship brake pad for EBC, the HH sintered option is designed to provide maximum brake effect. The sintered metal compound means that the pads are able to last up to twice as long compared to organic pads. EBC brake pads are designed to complement the rotor material, and the HH friction rating is the highest available in the industry. There are fitment options for both front and rear brakes. ■

LUBRICANTS

Purpose-built Performance V-Twin-Specific Oils and Lubricants

Bel-Ray has a range of products designed specifically for V-twin engines. The line includes everything from transmission oil to primary chain case lubricant.

P

repping a motorcycle often requires very specific tools, and what goes inside the bike should be specific, too. Bel-Ray has oils and lubricants designed exclusively for modern Harley-Davidson models. The American-made products include full-synthetic V-twin oil as well as compartment-specific products like Big Twin transmission oil and V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant. By taking advantage of oils and lubricants made for a very defined purpose and style of bike, the engine is better able to meet its full potential. The V-Twin Synthetic oil is a premium choice for air-cooled Harley engines. The 10W-50 multi-grade synthetic oil is combined with high-performance additives to provide reliable viscosity, engine component protection and optimal operation. Exclusive Bel-Ray anti-wear chemistry reduces valve train wear and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing. The synthetic base oils and additives result in a superior film strength, and Bel-Ray’s highest viscosity index means improved viscosity protection, even at high temperatures. Exceptional shear stability also reduces viscosity loss. Because the oil reduces friction in the engine, operating temperatures are decreased to help extend the life of the engine. And on the opposite end of the temperature spectrum, cold starts are both safe and easy. Bel-Ray’s Big Twin transmission oil helps a Harley’s transmission function exceptionally smoothly and quietly.

28

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2020

The improved lubrication helps reduce first-gear clunk, reduces or even eliminates gear whine, and helps the rider find neutral easier. The transmission oil features Bel-Ray’s exclusive extremepressure chemistry, which protects gear components from the destructive effects of shock loading. The oil is also designed to retain its properties despite high temperatures and wear. Oxidation protection prevents the temperatures from degrading the oil, and highviscosity-index base oils maintain their film strength over a wide temperature range. The oil also resists viscosity breakdown caused by gear-shearing action. The Bel-Ray V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant is a speciallyformulated, high-quality lubricant built specifically for the primary chaincase of all Big Twin models. It offers improved lubrication compared to motor oil and it is ideally suited to withstand high pressures. Performance as well as clutch and chain life are improved with the V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant. Exceptional friction additives, less clutch slipping and chatter plus smoother operation in hot stop-and-go traffic are all benefits of the chaincase oil. Both the transmission oil and the chaincase lubricant are produced in a distinctive red color to help detect any leaks. ■

XL SPELLS ADVENTURE

A FATBOOK SPORTSTER READY FOR ANYTHING

A black-finish 1SuperStreet 2-into-1 exhaust system from S&S Cycle, and one of Dunlop’s aggressive Trailmax Mission rear tires dominate this view of the latest FatBook makeover. The latest collaboration between Drag Specialties and Suburban Harley-Davidson, the XL Roadster is aimed at that fast-growing crowd of young riders turning an eye to V-twins.

FATBOOK BIKE

I

t’s been a while since the design teams at Drag Specialties and Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson got together to give a Sportster-model Harley-Davidson the FatBook makeover. That wait is over.

With this latest collaboration between the crew at Drag and Joe Houpt and the race-shop team at Suburban H-D, an XL has now joined the lineup of inspirational builds from the FatBook. The timing couldn’t be better. While customized and hot-rodded Softails and slammed-andstretched Touring-model Harleys are undeniable favorites, younger riders are turning an eye to V-twins; Sportsters especially. The model chosen for this makeover couldn’t be more appropriate – it’s the XL1200CX, a 2019 Roadster model, the sportiest Sportster in the lineup. Packed with the modern tech features young riders want, this cut-down bare-bones motorcycle is classic Harley-Davidson, with cues coming from bikes like the KHR flat trackers of the 1950s. 1

A Cycle Visions speedometer relocation kit, Kage Fighter handlebars, riser and clamp by LA Choppers along with a ProBeam Black Adaptive headlight from Custom Dynamics all add to the sport/adventure feel.

It isn’t just about good looks here. This Sportster is ready to perform. The Wave Brake Rotors are by Galfer, new 4-piston calipers come from Performance Machine, and the upgraded rear shocks are Legend Suspensions.

Harley-Davidson delivered an attractive package with the XL1200CX Roadster, by mixing that classic look with items like lightweight 5-spoke wheels to enhance the bike’s power-to-weight ratio and lighten up the steering feel. There’s a stock inverted-design 43mm front suspension with cartridge damping, too, and the front brakes are dual-disc with floating rotors. The whole package is overall blacked-out, and fairly radiates style and performance. Of course, as good as all this is doesn’t mean it can’t get better. With the help of the FatBook and the experts of the race-shop crew at Suburban Motors, this one has taken an XL Roadster to the next level. Setting the tone is the choice of the tires, Dunlop Trailmax Missions, tires ordinarily seen on bikes like the BMW GS models, the Honda Africa Twin, and various KTM bikes. This is a Sportster built for Adventure, an XL able to take on just about anything. To do that, some really cool additions 1

and substitutions have been made, with FatBook parts and accessories taking over and expanding on what HarleyDavidson started. Let’s begin with the functional/mechanical changes and upgrades augmenting that go-anywhere Adventure vibe set by the aggressive Dunlop tires. For starters the twindisc front brakes now operate with super-performance Performance Machine calipers and Galfer Wave rotors. There’s a Galfer Wave rotor on the rear, too. Suspension-wise, the Roadster’s 43mm inverted-design front suspension is now coupled with a Legend Suspensions REVO-ARC 13-inch Gold Piggyback XL Coil Suspension at the rear. There’s also a Rekluse Core EXP Clutch Kit in the mix for smooth shifting. A 1SuperStreet 2-into-1 exhaust system and a 2Mini Teardrop Stealth Air Cleaner Kit – both in black, and both from S&S Cycle – have vastly improved the 1200 Evo’s breathing.

Gold Militant foot pegs by Thrashin Supply further accent the adventure/go-anywhere theme. The mirrors are Arlen Ness Mini Stockers, the levers PSR, and those are Speed Merchant’s Gold Speed Grips. All, of course, right out of the FatBook.

Keeping the rider firmly planted in place and ready to rip, there’s a Saddlemen Signature Series 1WR seat, as well as LA Choppers Kage Fighter handlebars, risers and clamp. Controls come via some PSR Journey levers, Speed Merchant grips and Thrashin’ Supply Burnout and Militant foot pegs. Then there’s the continuation of that black-out look started in Milwaukee, thanks to a whole selection of new hardware from Arlen Ness, Custom Dynamics, Cycle Visions, EMD, Headwinds, Klock Werks, Kuryakyn, and Roland Sands Design, to name just a few. There are blacked-out mirrors, lights, engine, primary, pulley and sprocket covers and lots more. It’s all listed in the accompanying Build Sheet. ■

» Have a look. You can bet there are more than a few new V-twin enthusiasts interested in a bike just a little, or a lot, like this one. Show it to them, show them that with the FatBook and just a little effort, a Sportster can be built to go anywhere and do just about, well, anything.

agger riders can amp up their bike’s visibility with Custom Dynamics LED lighting products. Each lighting option boosts brightness, style and peace of mind with backing by the company’s lifetime warranty. Baggers can get a quick turn signal upgrade with plugand-play LED turn signal inserts from the ProBEAM and Genesis 4 lines. Available in both bullet and flat styles, these DOT and SAE compliant turn signals offer a big boost in both visibility and style. ProBEAM Dynamic Ringz turn signal inserts have automotive-grade LEDs that offer both a brighter light output and a wider viewing angle thanks to a halo of 24 white ProBEAM LED running lights. Inside the halo, a cluster of 12 amber LEDs under a smoked lens acts as the turn signal. The new Genesis 4 amber/white turn signals offer a halo-free look with 48 dual-color LEDs. The bright white daytime running light instantly switches to amber when the turn signal is activated. Of course, one of the best spots on a Bagger to place extra illumination is on the saddlebags themselves to increase both side and rear visibility. Custom Dynamics has two BAGZ lighting styles that adhere under the lip of OEM Harley saddlebag lids. BAGZ have a plug-and-play wiring adapter and an in-line IP67-rated weatherproof quick disconnect, so not only is installation easy, but so is removing the saddlebags. Low Profile BAGZ offer a sleek row of super-bright red LEDs behind a red or smoked lens, all measuring only 7/16-inch thick. Customers can choose a standard dual-intensity Low Profile BAGZ or the Sequential version, which offers dim running lights, full-intensity brake lights and a sequential red turn signal.

ProBEAM BAGZ use high quality, automotive-grade LEDs and modern light pipe design to create an eye-catching setup. Each unit has three light pipes that illuminate across the bag with 24 separate LEDs to provide a fullcontrast brake light with a standard or sequential turn signal configuration. Customers get to choose a chrome or gloss black housing and a smoked or red lens. Another saddlebag option from Custom Dynamics is Latch Lightz. These LED lights are a direct plug-and-play replacement for the OEM reflectors on a hard saddlebag. The 81 super-bright, dual-intensity red LEDs enhance side visibility from behind a red or smoked lens. Each Latch Lightz unit is pre-taped for easy installation. Riders who really want to get creative with lighting can opt for Plasma Rods. Patented LED technology produces a bright, smooth light output that can be put just about anywhere on the bike with included automotive-grade tape. They work great as turn signals or brake lights located between the bags and the fender, or under a TourPak as a third brake light. Plasma Rods have a smoked lens, so they blend into the background when off. Customers can choose red or dual-color red/amber LEDs, plus lengths of 8 inches, 10 inches, 12 inches or 14 inches. ■

TIRES

Domestic Bliss

American-Made Touring Tires

Designed for a range of Harley-Davidson, Indian and Victory models, the American Elite offers long wear, a greater lean angle, great stability, fantastic wet grip, neutral steering characteristics, and greater bump compliance.

L

ong lasting, confidence inspiring, American made*. Those three traits define Dunlop’s American Elite® tires for touring and cruiser models dating back to 1982. Whether a ride is across the country or just across town, customers can add up the miles without giving up handling and performance. The American Elite is available in 28 size and style options to fit a huge array of motorcycles, including most HarleyDavidson, Indian and Victory models. The longevity and confidence that the American Elite tires provide comes from a combination of design, technology and materials. From its inception, the American Elite rear tire has featured Dunlop’s MT Multi-TreadTM technology. That means the rear tire has a long-wearing compound in the center to help increase longevity and extend tread wear, while the shoulders are made from a softer compound that provides outstanding lateral grip when cornering. With American Elite tires, riders no longer have to choose between great mileage and handling capabilities. In all, the handling advantages of the American Elite really add up when compared to a single-compound tire. Longer wear, greater lean angle, better stability, more wet grip, more neutral steering characteristics and greater bump compliance are just a few of the performance improvements a rider can expect. The first-generation American Elite offered the MT Multi-Tread rear tire technology in only a black sidewall style. Now, with this latest generation of the tire, customers can get the MT technology in one of three styles – black sidewall, wide white sidewall, or narrow white sidewall.

Dunlop built the history of the American Elite into its name. The tire is completely designed, tested and made in America. The American Elite name is prominently displayed on the sidewall of each tire as a proud statement of its origins. After going through the design process, new tires are rigorously tested. The testing for the American Elite tires took place at Dunlop’s proving grounds in Huntsville, Alabama. This world-class testing facility allows Dunlop test riders to experience a tire’s behavior across all types of riding surfaces and in various weather conditions. Once the American Elite was refined and ready for production, manufacturing got underway at the Dunlop plant in Buffalo, New York. The American Elite is the ideal choice for touring and cruiser riders who want tires that can stand up to the long miles while still delivering stability and handling. ■

LED Lighting for a Brighter Ride

J.W. Speaker’s innovative Adaptive 2 Headlight Series dynamically provide ditch-to-ditch lighting to eliminate dark corners and provide a punch of light more than 1,500 feet down the road.

J.W. Speaker Adaptive 2 Series lights are a unique solution that provides instant illumination, shining directionally in sync with the path of the motorcycle to instantly maximize visibility. Areas of a road that would remain in the darkness with stock, non-adaptive headlights during turning are immediately illuminated by the targeted LED beam. The lights are designed and tested to pull the appropriate level of power so they do not overwhelm the electrical system on the bike and potentially cause an unsafe situation.

O

ne of the overwhelming benefits of LED lighting products on the market is superior visibility. Fortunately, J.W. Speaker has created an LED lineup addressing poor visibility with a portfolio of lighting options for riders on a wide selection of makes and models. J.W. Speaker’s innovative Adaptive 2 Headlight Series are a cutting-edge approach to exceptional visibility, especially when taking corners. These headlights dynamically provide ditch-to-ditch lighting to eliminate dark corners and provide a punch of light more than 1,500 feet down the road to give customers a more confident ride. J.W. Speaker’s signature plug-and-play Adaptive technology allows the light to sense when the bike is leaning so it can redirect the beam to illuminate dark corners. The headlight calculates bank angles on a realtime basis using proprietary technology and on-board sensors, automatically directing the light array up or down as the motorcycle leans.

Additionally, J.W. Speaker also has two different models of reflector-based LED headlights for those customers who want the benefits of LED lighting, but prefer the classic reflector styling. The Model 8720 Reflector LED replaces 7-inch round headlights, while the Model 8620 light is an upgrade for 5¾-inch round headlights. Both are offered in a two-tone die-cast aluminum housing that provides rugged durability and a classic look. The state-of-the-art LEDs make sure your customers can definitely see and be seen. They are available with either a chrome or a dark chrome retro-styled face. Of course, superior visibility doesn’t just stop at the headlight. Your customers can upgrade their fog lights to J.W. Speaker’s Model 6045 and Model 6025 LED fog lights. Both offer outstanding visibility, extreme durability and long life. The Model 6045 is an upgrade for bulb-based 4½-inch (PAR36) fog lights, and it is designed to be compatible with most fog light housings. The Model 6025 is a 4-inch round reflector-based LED fog light designed for motorcycle riders who prefer the classic styling. ■

hen it comes to V-twin riders, there are usually three regular upgrades they make with a new bike – swap out the stock bars for aftermarket handlebars, remove the OE exhaust in favor of performance pipes, and add a highflow air cleaner to really allow that engine to breathe. Each of these upgrades can make a huge difference with the look, sound and performance of a Harley-Davidson, and all can be done economically. This is why the pros at

50TH ANNIVERSARY

Three generations of Ness. What started as a small custom aftermarket product company by late patriarch, Arlen Ness (center), has grown into a worldwide brand now run by son Cory Ness (right) and grandson Zach Ness. Arlen Ness Enterprises celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2020.

lot has been written and said about Arlen Ness, King of Custom Motorcycles, since his passing March 22, 2019. But, perhaps the most telling thing about him was shared at his memorial service when Arlen’s fellow Hamster, Kurt Rumens, said, “The funny thing about Arlen Ness was that he never knew he was Arlen Ness.” In Arlen’s own eyes he was just another bike builder; nothing more, nothing less. Regardless, when it came to building custom motorcycles Arlen didn’t think like other custom bike builders, as pointed out by another Hamster, Tom Motzko, who also happens to be the guy who oversees vendor development at Drag Specialties.

Life father like son: Cory Ness (right) has followed right along in his father’s (left) storied footsteps, and has become a celebrated custom builder in his own right.

“When Arlen Ness looked at a motorcycle he never saw what we saw,” Motzko pointed out. “He always had a vision of his own of what the bike could be.”

ARLEN NESS ENTERPRISES

Top and bottom left: Arlen Ness Enterprises headquarters in Dublin, California. Top right: LeMans Corporation chairman Fred Fox and Arlen Ness. Fox brought Arlen Ness Enterprises onboard shortly after acquiring Drag Specialties in 1988. Don Emde photo Bottom right: Arlen Ness in his early years.

Those visions resulted in landmark custom bikes that typically were powered by exotic or multiple engines that sometimes sprouted multiple superchargers, turbochargers and/or carburetors. There’s no need to even remind you of the bikes’ fanciful paint jobs – Arlen was a heck of a painter, too. Fittingly, those wild custom bikes carried colorful names like Untouchable, Two Bad, Ness-Tique, Smooth-Ness, Mach Ness or Ness-Stalgia.

The feature article included a color centerspread with a low-angle photo touting a young Arlen Ness astride the bike – a pair of angry dual-throat Weber carburetors protruded defiantly from the engine’s left side, practically dominating the scene. But even that was overshadowed by a small inset photo of Arlen popping a wheelie on the bike. Yeah, older Harleys weren’t supposed to pop wheelies, but try telling Arlen that.

Each bike told a different and unique story about its builder who, as Rumens aptly pointed out, always remained stoic in his behavior and humble in his presence. Arlen also happened to be a successful businessman who founded a company bearing his own name; a company that celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2020.

You couldn’t dissuade Arlen from building and marketing his own custom motorcycle parts, either. And so, through the years, he designed and manufactured parts that he felt other custom-bike owners and builders wanted – and needed. He also continued producing some of the wildest custom paint jobs on his and customers’ motorcycles, and throughout Arlen Ness Enterprises enjoyed steady growth. Through it all Arlen Ness remained, well, Arlen Ness.

That company is Arlen Ness Enterprises, and it originated in Arlen’s garage shortly after he married his wife, business partner and life-long confidant, Beverly. Arlen’s first custom to gain national recognition was a hardtail chopper powered by a 1947 Knucklehead engine. The red custom with cool flame graphics scored a class win at the Oakland Roadster Show, and it later appeared in the very first issue of Hot Bike magazine (Summer 1971 cover date).

Soon enough the mild-mannered builder from California’s Bay Area was joined by his equally mild-mannered son, Cory, and together they designed and developed even more radical and wild custom motorcycles and parts for a growing custom-bike market. Moreover, many of those parts were bolt-on components that even the most unskilled screwdriver-mechanic could capably attach to his or

her motorcycle. During that time Cory produced a few of his own custom builds, and Arlen, well, he continued producing those exotic one-off customs that helped establish him and his company in the first place. By then the roaring ’90s took the Harley market by storm, and providence played a role in the future of Arlen Ness Enterprises. Shortly after Fred Fox acquired Drag Specialties in 1988, one of his first new vendor recruits was Arlen Ness Enterprises. The Drag/Ness union led to their first co-op product, the Stealth Mirror. To this day that custom handlebar mirror continues its popularity among Harley-Davidson and custom-bike owners for personalizing their rides.

The custom bike Arlen Ness built back in 1995 to commemorate his company’s 25th anniversary.

Now reflect on this: The Stealth Mirror met with such enthusiasm by Drag Specialties customers that it eventually became one of the national distributor’s top five all-time products in terms of sales. Part of that popularity is owed to the many variations that Arlen Ness Enterprises incorporated into the product itself. Short, medium and tall stems, chrome and other flashy finishes for those stems and mirror backings, and various tints to the mirror portion itself, give customers a wide variety of Stealth Mirror variations to choose from. About 10 years ago custom bike fans had another choice from Arlen Ness Enterprises, when Zach Ness, Cory’s son, graduated from college to officially join the team. “Officially,” because in truth even as a youngster Zach had been a part of the family company when he assumed various chores and such to help him learn the business.

Arlen’s first custom, a hardtail chopper powered by a 1947 Knucklehead engine. The red custom appeared on the very first issue of Hot Bike magazine in summer 1971. That unmistakable Arlen smile. Talented, humble, friendly and respected by all, Arlen lived up to his nickname, the King of Custom Motorcycles.

46

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

“Yeah, I did all sorts of things, sweeping floors, sanding frames, stuff like that,” says Zach. And when he turned 15 he built his first custom bike that was based on a Y2K frame. “I built it in my dad’s garage. They (papa Cory and grandpa Arlen) never touched it. I built it all myself. That way I’d learn about custom-bike building).” That and future bike builds were some of many lessons that Zach learned and applied to his new job as what he terms “righthand man” to company president, Cory. His addition to the team let Arlen slowly wind down from his career, spending less time in the corporate end of the business, and more time doing what he liked most, building custom bikes and tinkering with related projects. “He just couldn’t get away from motorcycles,” recalls Cory. “He loved them too much.” And that Ness passion for custom motorcycles led to the latest product from Arlen Ness Enterprises, the Titanium line that was introduced this year. As the name suggests, these new bolt-on custom parts (foot pegs, mirrors, foot controls, etc.) project the look of titanium, using new,

The latest from Arlen Ness Enterprises, the Titanium line. Each of the products features a finish that visually suggests the lightweight alloy of the same name.

“It’s a matte-type finish that is conservative yet custom, and custom yet conservative,” Zach points out, adding that it’s a finish that will satisfy bike owners wanting either a conservative or radical theme for their motorcycles. The new Titanium line, he assures people, is that versatile. No doubt the custom motorcycle community lost one of its founding fathers last year, but Arlen Ness Enterprises continues to thrive and grow. Cory and Zach continue to team up to design and develop future products, and definitely look for more project bikes from the company – including a special 50th anniversary tribute bike – that will encompass styling and custom trends to fuel the market for years to come. In the meantime, Happy 50th Anniversary, Arlen Ness Enterprises. And, Arlen, we miss you. Godspeed to the man who many reverently remember as the King of Custom Motorcycles. ■

Saddlebag Sound

Bag Lids for Boosting Audio

S

addlebag lids are great for keeping a rider’s luggage dry and secure, but they are also a great spot to mount additional speakers to give a Bagger’s audio system a big (and loud) upgrade. KICKER offers its bag lid kits either ready to rock or ready to be paired with speakers. Now, customers can also choose the finish – ready-to-paint or the new Vivid Black. The bag lid kits are made specifically for 2014 and newer Harley-Davidson Baggers. Both versions – with and without the speakers built in – arrive either ready for painting or in a sleek Vivid Black that perfectly matches black OEM saddlebags.

KICKER’s bag lid kits come with or without the company’s Powersports Coaxial Speaker with pre-measured and terminated speaker harnesses. Customers can choose from a ready-to-paint finish or the new Vivid Black colorway.

KICKER packages each pair of bag lids with the necessary gaskets, grilles and mounting screws. This takes all the guesswork out of upgrading from a standard bag lid to one that becomes an audio component. To make it even easier, the bag lids work with the stock locking mechanism, so nothing else on the saddlebags needs to be modified or replaced. The KICKER “loaded” bag lid kits are the complete package, because each lid is fitted with a weather-proof KICKER PS69 Powersports Coaxial Speaker with pre-measured and terminated speaker harnesses. A weatherproof seal around the speakers makes sure that moisture doesn’t seep into the saddlebags. Additionally, an incorporated drain ensures that water doesn’t pool on the lid. KICKER bag lids are engineered in-house at the company’s headquarters in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The brand has grown a lot since its inception as a two-man operation working out of a garage in 1973, but the company still focuses on precision manufacturing with a personal connection. For the bag lids, the top-mounted speaker design includes a custom underhung bracketing system to maintain the structural integrity of the lid. The audio system is ready to ride, no matter how bumpy the road gets. The KICKER PS line of speakers wasn’t just designed for powersports, it was also designed by riders and powersports enthusiasts. KICKER PS speakers are made specifically for powersports, with the goal of providing superior sound quality and volume so that audio clarity is maintained even with road and wind noise.

The rugged PS69 system, which are the PS line’s 6x9-inch speakers, utilize heavy-duty ceramic magnets for high power handling and volume for ultra-clear quality that sounds great even from inside a helmet. The other KICKER bag lid kits, available ready-to-paint or in Vivid Black, include a set of bag lids with no speakers. However, the bags arrive with speaker cutouts that can accept a set of the KICKER PS69 speakers or any 6x9-inch drivers. The top-mounted speaker bracing is built into the bag lid, and once the speaker is dropped in, the seal will be weatherproof. The KICKER bag lid kit pairs well with one of the late-model KICKER fairing upgrade kits with four-channel amps. That combination results in the full KICKER signature sound and experience. ■

arley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight engine is a powerhouse, but a low idle combined with a plugged-up factory exhaust conspire to mute the aggressive exhaust note this machine was destined to sing. Competition Bagger

A Custom Road Glide Goes Racing

The Performance Bagger that Alex Fox had on display at his Slyfox booth at the Louisville NVP is a prime example of the race bike he’s building for the King of the Baggers race. It’s a bike with a classic Touring look, but loaded with plenty of performance upgrades. Todd Olson photo

A

s the son of a professional racecar driver, Alex Fox grew up around motorsports, but the race he’s getting ready for now is something completely different. Fox is currently building a custom Slyfox Harley-Davidson Road Glide for the King of the Baggers race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in July.

The premium carbon fiber components from Slyfox give 2014 and newer Baggers a real style and performance upgrade.

We’re not sure what a field of Baggers is going to look like twisting down the Corkscrew, but this debut race hosted by MotoAmerica and Drag Specialties will definitely be one for the history books. The nascent Performance Bagger market is booming, thanks to a new generation of riders looking to coax more handling and performance out of their Touring bikes. Upgrades include improved suspensions, better hand and foot controls for more precise handling, race-quality braking systems and – of course – engine work for more horsepower and torque. The race at Laguna is the perfect opportunity to introduce this niche segment to the wider motorcycling public. Fox is hoping to use his performance expertise to make sure the Slyfox Road Glide is at the front of the field when the race gets underway this summer. The bike will be kitted out with Slyfox performance parts, of course, as well as a selection of parts from other performance brands carried by Drag Specialties. The Slyfox parts will include a Pro Series seat, triple clamps and the carbon fiber collection of saddlebag lids, fenders and tank dash.

Customers can put the black Slyfox Pro Series seat on their Baggers, too, with either a black or burgundy stitched logo. The Slyfox triple clamps and carbon fiber pieces are more than just pretty parts. They also save weight over stock. While that is an advantage for street riders who want to emphasize a Bagger’s performance capabilities, it will especially be an advantage at Laguna Seca. The upper triple clamp is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, making it not just lighter than stock, but also stronger. The clamp also allows for mounting of T-bars as well as a wide variety of risers. In fact, the clamp accepts a 1984 through 2020 Dresser style riser bushing. The clamp streamlines the dash area for a clean look, includes all mounting hardware, and comes in both a raw and black anodized finish.

Adjustable Rear Brake Arm for Baggers

I

f Harley-Davidson’s Baggers are all about comfort while riding around town and long-distance cruising, then why is the stock rear brake lever at such an awkward angle, and why isn’t it adjustable?

That’s exactly the question that Lance Coury, owner of THRASHIN Supply Company in Canoga Park, California, was asking himself a little over a year ago. Never one to ignore a problem, Coury set about designing a stylish, adjustable rear brake lever that’s more comfortable, easier to use, and allows quicker operation for improved safety. The result is the Adjustable Bagger Brake Arm, which is designed for 2014 and newer FL Harley models, and is available in anodized black or chrome finish in two different lengths. A former X-Games-winning Freestyle Motocross competitor, Coury keeps himself grounded with casual rides on his Harleys. Coury already had experience making his own custom hand and foot holds for his freestyle bike, and that DIY approach carried over to his Dyna. What started as a small run of bar risers and footpegs for himself and a few friends grew into a booming accessories business, and THRASHIN Supply now has a full team of employees and occupies a large warehouse space in Southern California. Look for a number of the company’s products within the pages of the FatBook and OldBook. THRASHIN’s Adjustable Bagger Brake Arm is an ideal modification for your customer’s Bagger. It’s not just about good looks and a cool custom part – though the Bagger Brake Arm does have a sleek appearance and covers the ugly OEM pivot nut – it’s also about comfort and ease of use. Machined from billet aluminum in the USA, THRASHIN’s Brake Arm is available in stock length or a 2-inch shorter option, and is three-position adjustable, from stock height to 1½ inches lower for up to a 24-degree reduction in the angle of the brake arm. That means less of an angle in a rider’s ankle when using the brake, which makes for more comfortable riding. Adjusting the lever for more comfort also makes the rear brake easier to cover while riding, so activation time is reduced. The shorter brake arm moves the pedal even closer to the floorboard while still maintaining necessary pedal stroke, making it ideal for riders with a shorter inseam. The Adjustable Bagger Brake Arm works with bikes’ stock floorboards, but for even more adjustability and comfort the Brake Arm could be paired with THRASHIN’s Bagger Floorboards. The Bagger floorboards also offer 3 inches of forward/back adjustability to suit different rider’s preferences.

Reaching for Comfort Seats for Every Rider Size

M

otorcycle seats need be as different as the riders who are sitting on them. At Mustang Seats, that means giving riders options that cater to both ergonomics and looks. There are variations designed to adjust a rider’s distance to the ground and the controls, and there are style options that range from low-profile custom looks to all-day touring comfort. The team at Mustang Seats knows that riders come in all shapes and sizes, which means motorcycle seats should, too. Mustang’s top-selling HarleyDavidson touring seats come in Extended Reach, Reduced Reach and Standard Reach designs. Typically ideal for riders with an inseam of 33 inches or taller, the Extended Reach seats position the rider further back for a less cramped cruising position. One of Mustang’s top touring seats in this category is the Super Touring Deluxe, which moves riders back 1¾ inches compared to stock seats. Available with or without heat, the seat gives 2008 and newer models an ergonomicallycontoured 19-inch wide front seat that angles the body for long-distance comfort. Styled after state-of-the-art automotive interior designs, the Super Touring Deluxe seat has a tuckand-roll stitched inlay. Riders can opt for a separate, matching Deluxe driver backrest, passenger backrest and even saddlebag lid covers. There is also a Super Touring seat available featuring Mustang’s Original/Vintage stitch pattern in 2-up and solo options.

Mustang’s LowDown Touring seat provides optimal comfort and positions riders more forward for improved reach to foot controls and handlebars.

A Standard Reach Touring seat replicates the stock saddle, but offers plenty of that well-known Mustang comfort and style. Mustang’s Super Touring Deluxe seat is built for riders who need a little more room on a bike, and moves them back 1¾ inches for a more comfortable ride.

On the other end of the driver positioning spectrum, Reduced Reach seats like the LowDown Touring solo and 2-up designs place the rider forward so that the handlebars and foot controls are closer to provide a more comfortable, confidence-inspiring riding position. An inseam of 30 inches or less is the typical sizing for riders who prefer Reduced Reach seats. The LowDown Touring seats drop the seat height and are cut narrow at the front for an easy stance when stopped. Despite the slimmer thickness, the seat is still designed to provide optimal touring comfort, with a driver seating area that is shaped and angled for an ideal long-distance posture. The solo version is available in a Chrome studded or Black Pearl studded version for extra style. Driver backrests are also an option for the seats.

Oversized, Not Over-Hyped High-Performance Bars and Risers

Biltwell offers an extensive range of handlebar and riser choices for your high-performance Harley-Davidson- riding customers.

When your customers ditch the stock risers on their 2018-up Street Bob, they’re left with a conundrum – where to put the digital speedo. Biltwell’s Billet Dash Panel answers that question. This part fits every model in Biltwell’s T-bar and Murdock riser range.

M

odern V-twin riders treat their MilwaukeeEight Softails and hot rod Dynas like sportbikes – riding them fast and hard, often adding upgrades for better performance, handling and comfort. Every Tyson XL T-bar, Tracker OS handlebar and Murdock OS riser in Biltwell’s 2020 range is engineered for strength, dependability and comfortable ergonomics.

This bar boasts an oversized 11/8 -inch O.D. center section and 1-inch O.D. ends to accept Harley-Davidson and select aftermarket hand controls. CNC’ed slots on the bar ends and the 1¼ -inch O.D. chromoly uprights make routing Harley’s internal throttle module and hand control wires clean and easy.

However, you don’t have to take Biltwell’s word for it. In 2018, Biltwell sent a range of its products to Germany’s TÜV agency for strength testing and fitment verification. After nearly two years of analysis, every oversized bar and riser in Biltwell’s cockpit collection is TÜV certified. That means these products have been tested by the third-party Technischer Überwachungsverein (Technical Inspection Association) to undergo stress and load testing, as well as other tests to ensure they meet highquality manufacturing standards.

TYSON XL HANDLEBARS

Biltwell’s Tyson XL handlebar line is robust, with four rises and two finishes, plus straight and pullback styles. Every model features the same tapered, seamless 4130 chromoly handlebar.

TRACKER OS HANDLEBARS

Biltwell’s Tracker OS bars feature the same advanced material, tube forming and CNC bending technologies the company uses to craft Tyson XL T-bars. These oversized bars come in three heights and fit 11/8-inch risers.

MURDOCK OS RISERS

Biltwell Murdock OS risers are constructed with 4130 chromoly, just like the company’s precision engineered handlebars. This aerospace material is two times stronger than 6061 T-6 aluminum and boasts 2½ times greater density, making it a great material for building bulletproof bars and risers for Big Twins. Murdock’s one-piece investment-cast bar clamp fits 11/8-inch bars and features a slot in the bottom clamp to make routing internal wiring much easier.

BILTWELL

Murdock OS risers for 11/8-inch handlebars are available in two finishes – matte black or chrome plate – and five heights from 6 inches to 14 inches, plus straight and pullback styles.

Biltwell believes offering Tracker OS bar heights and eight different Murdock OS riser height and pullback combinations gives Dyna, FXR and Milwaukee-Eight Softail risers more choices, and choice is never a bad thing. Like every bar in Biltwell’s Harley cockpit collection, Tracker OS bars are available notched for Harley’s throttleby-wire module or slotted to accept stock wiring looms and hand controls. ■

Biltwell used 4130 chromoly to construct every bar and riser in the company’s oversized cockpit component line. The investment-cast, one-piece clamp on Murdock risers hold handlebars like a vise.

Tracker OS handlebars come in three rises and two surface finishes. Versions for Harley-Davidson throttle-by-wire and standard hand controls are available.

New Look Slip-Ons

Cool Finishes for Some Touring-Model Favorites There are optional inserts that comply with SAE J2825 sound test specs with no appreciable loss of performance. Along with those strong, 16-gauge bodies, the absorptive baffles are covered with stainless-steel mat and hightemperature fiberglass. In addition to these 4½-inch HP-Plus slip-ons in the new finishes, Khrome Werks also has some other great exhaust products for Baggers. The lineup includes the 2-into-2 Crossover Header System, which was designed and built with 1¾-inch 16-gauge headers and a crossover for improved flow. akota Digital helps riders take their gauge game to the next level with kits and individual gauges that provide a bright, customizable command center. Now, there are even more options for Bagger owners, including a four-gauge MLX instrument package and the MVX-8K Series analog/digital plug-in instrumentation. Bagger applications for the four-gauge MLX instrument packages allow a direct plug-in swap from the stock gauges to the Dakota Digital package. The four-gauge kit includes a 33/8-inch speedometer with an odometer plus a tachometer with a dual trip meter. A pair of 21/16-inch gauges are fully programmable so the rider can choose what information to view, including oil pressure, oil temperature, voltage and fuel level readings. A sensor is included in the package for the oil temperature reading.

The four-gauge MLX instrument package is a direct plug-in swap for the stock gauges, and offers customers a wide range of functions and colors.

Riders who want even more detailed information at a glance can program the gauges to display specifics like ¼-mile time, 0-60 time, high speed and high rpm. The customizable options don’t end there. The highvisibility LED display is easy to read, even in direct sunlight, and there are 31 illumination colors to choose from. Riders get to choose a chrome or black machined aluminum bezel, too. Analog style meets digital functionality with the MVX8K Series analog/digital plug-in instruments. Dakota Digital offers this new series as a six-gauge kit, a twogauge kit, and as individual gauges that can be added on, including fuel level, oil pressure, oil temperature and voltmeter readings.

MVX-8K Series guages

DEALER DISPLAY PROGRAM To make it easier for dealers to get the word out, Dakota Digital also has a new dealer display program.

Like all Dakota Digital gauges, the MVX-8K Series allows customers to customize the gauges. There are seven LED colors available for the background, message center and pointer, and each component can be programmed independently for a true custom color scheme. The gauges also include a choice of backgrounds, like black/gray or white/black, and the choice of a chrome or black bezel.

The display program will be offered throughout all of 2020. The guidelines are straightforward – when a dealer purchases three eligible gauges, the display is included for free. The display plugs into a 110V power outlet and connects to an app that allows a demonstration of all the functions of a Dakota Digital gauge. Ask your Drag rep for the list of all eligible gauges.

Complementary MBM Modules plug directly into the MVX-8K Series gauges and add readings for up to two inputs—air suspension pressure, boost pressure or similar—into the existing LCD displays of the speedometer and tachometer. The modules make it extremely easy to add additional gauge readings without having to add more gauges. ■

rlen Ness turns functional parts into style statements with its billet air cleaners. Now there are additional color options for the Method Clear Series air cleaner kits plus two all-new designs, the Sidekick and Clear Tear Series. All three of those air cleaner styles share some high-tech traits. The air cleaner designs have clean lines thanks to patented backing plate technology that utilizes an internal hidden breather, which eliminates the need for any external hardware or hoses. A polycarbonate window in each air cleaner is coated with proprietary films that prevent oil adhesion, yellowing or marring from engine oil or UV exposure to maintain window clarity for a clear view. The Method Clear Series forged billet aluminum air cleaner kits were already available in chrome and black anodized options, but now customers can get even more creative with anodized red, gold or blue finishes. Each Method Clear Series kit comes with a washable, reusable high-performance filter constructed of black pre-oiled cotton, which allows optimal flow and filtration. In addition to the new colors, the series now has an available pre-filter. Hydrophobic technology helps the pre-filter repel water in wet conditions, and it deflects dirt and other harmful debris. The new Sidekick air cleaners from Arlen Ness make a bold aesthetic statement. The forged billet aluminum is CNC machined into an angled shape, which provides plenty of leg room without sacrificing style. Available in a chrome or black anodized finish, the Sidekick air cleaners come packaged with a filter that is made from black synthetic material wrapped in stainless steel mesh. The water-resistant filter is washable.

The Clear Tear performance air filter is made from black pre-oiled cotton. A pre-filter is available separately for riders who want an extra level of water and debris protection in inclement weather. eep-breathing air filters, performance exhausts and camshaft swaps are all popular mods aimed at getting more of that air/fuel mixture in and out of a Harley-Davidson engine for a bigger bang and more power.

What’s often overlooked, though, are the OEM fuel injectors. Asked to deliver considerably more fuel to go with that enhanced air flow, they can be hardpressed to keep pace. OE injectors can cause all kinds of performance and rideability problems in a modified engine. Feuling Parts is well aware of this, and answers the call for more fuel with a full lineup of performance fuel-injectors with applications for all the EFI Twin Cams, V-Rods, Sportsters and Milwaukee-Eights. With injectors sized for everything from mildly modified engines, to injectors capable of delivering enough fuel for racing, there are lots of flow rates to choose from. Updated designs, the injectors feature 25-degree spray cones with six spray hole nozzle ends (OEM is 8-degrees with three nozzles) and they’ll resolve a lot of performance and rideability issues. Drag Specialties has them all, and Feuling’s website-charts makes the choosing easy. Feuling has a full selection of engine sensors, too. Valvetrain Upgrade

Perfecting the Milwaukee-Eight

JIMS’ new performance rocker arm shafts and proprietary hardware can help maintain Milwaukee-Eight valvetrain geometry in both stock engines and those with performance upgrades.

In an effort to perfect that Milwaukee-Eight valvetrain geometry, and substantially improve engine durability, JIMS has developed a new set of performance rocker shafts and the proprietary hardware to put them in place.

P

owerful as it is, the multi-valve Milwaukee-Eight isn’t immune from that one truth common to every engine that Harley-Davidson has ever made – customers are going to try to squeeze more power out of that V-twin. And that, of course, is already happening with the Milwaukee-Eight. But as many a tuner has learned, maintaining the M8’s valvetrain geometry can become critical in any search for performance. It’s true on a stock engine and especially true when the valve-spring pressure on a Milwaukee-Eight has been increased.

Drag Ad 3rd Quarter.pdf

The new JIMS rocker arm shafts are precisely machined from a premium low-alloy nickel/chromium/molybdenum case-hardened steel. The hardware flats on the ends of the shafts are held to a .0005-inch parallel tolerance, assuring that the rocker arms remain seated in the absolutely correct position with relation to the pushrod cups and valve stem tips when everything is installed correctly. Taking this one step further, JIMS has developed a 4130 stud-and-nut kit to replace the stock hardware used to secure the rocker shafts. Compared to the OEM bolt, the JIMS stud-and-nut kit allows technicians all the assembly finesse required when torqueing the rocker arm shafts on the cylinder head during engine assembly. ■

The same is true for bikes in your shop. Stock Harley-Davidson spark plug wires are carbon core. With heat and vibration that carbon core breaks down, and while the wire probably won’t outright fail, the resistance will increase meaning less energy to the spark plugs and a lazy motorcycle. Fresh plug wires can wake up a Harley-Davidson. It’ll start easier and have better throttle response for an easily felt performance boost. The ignition specialists at ACCEL recommend changing wires at 20,000 miles, sooner if the bike is five years old or older. ACCEL recommends its 300+ Series wires for EVO and older engines. These wires feature a stainless-steel spiral core that’s fully compatible with electronic ignitions. The 300+ wires share construction style with ACCEL’s S/S Series, too, just with a lower resistance suited to these older applications.

Custom designed specifically for 2017 and newer MilwaukeeEight Touring bikes, ACCEL’s spark plug wires will be a great performance addition to your customers’ bikes.

For Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight engines, ACCEL recommends the S/S Series wires. Designed to work with later-model bikes – fuel injected or carbureted – S/S Series wires are true performers. There’s up to five-times lower resistance than many performance wire sets, and the 8mm silicone jackets and insulation eliminate electrical leakage or RFI interference. All this is available in Universal and Custom Fit sets and four colors, Black, Red, Blue and Yellow. FYI, recent trends have Red wire sets selling as well as Black in Twin Cam and M8 applications. ■

ome cargo is more precious than others, especially when it’s a pet. Nelson-Rigg’s Route 1 Rover provides a spacious compartment for pets of up to 20 pounds, and it’s designed with a pet’s safety and comfort in mind. The Rover is constructed using Nelson-Rigg’s proprietary Ultramax® fabric, just like the rest of the Route 1 line, providing maximum UV protection. Nelson-Rigg guarantees the material won’t fade or change color, and the Rover comes with the company’s Lifetime Warranty. When pet and owner are on the go, the Rover mounts to a tour trunk rack or sissy bar with quick-release and self-fastening straps. Off the bike, a “pet porch” gives the animal more room. This mesh extension also provides more airflow and an additional entry into the bag. The two-stage zippered opening, which latches to prevent accidental opening, acts like a front door. The extension can be used simply as an additional vent by unzipping just one of the two zippers. There is another zippered vent on the other side of the bag, and the

An integrated, adjustable leash is on a track at the base of the bag for comfortable movement without allowing a pet to jump out. A padded bottom panel keeps little paws comfortable, and it can be removed for easy cleaning. The Rover has rigid construction for extra pet protection. Top and side carry handles, two side pockets, reflective piping and a wide lid opening are other perks. ■
