Getting Ready to Rumble by D on Em de

Down to the bone at S&S

Chassis upgrades at Trask Performance

The original race date for the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race was mid-July, then rescheduled to October 23-25, 2020 during the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. As of press time, that date was still holding for an event intended to include spectators. Since a Bagger isn’t a difficult motorcycle to find, you might think this will just be a race between machines found in the parking lot at the event? Well, think again. A rule book was drawn up by MotoAmerica, the sanctioning body of all the races at the “Speedfest.” No one wants to get 2nd place (or worse), so the participating race teams are going all-out to reduce weight, add more horsepower and ground clearance and make their “Race Baggers” corner like never before. They are also recruiting some top current and recent racing stars to ride their motorcycles. For a look at what’s going on in the back room at S&S and Trask Performance (just two of the entrants) see our report in the News section, starting on page 10. Watch for more in our next issue and I hope to see you in Monterey in October to see these bikes in action. Wait! There’s More

The E-Bike era is here! The TazerMX

A

s the old saying goes, the first motorcycle race happened when the second motorcycle was built. One day—over 100 years later—two guys were cruising down the road just smelling the roses on their Baggers until one of them decided to show his buddy his tailpipes. The other rider wasn’t going to get shown up without a fight, and (unofficially) the first Bagger race was on. A few laughed when it was announced earlier this year that some makers of aftermarket products were strongly in support of taking it from the road to a real race track to see who was the “King of the Baggers.” The management at Drag Specialties loved the idea too and signed on as the main sponsor.

Yes, there is much more to read in this issue, more products, news about upcoming events you can attend, and an update on the new INTENSE E-Bicycles that you V-twin dealers can sell to your Harley and Indian customers. What? Think they’ll trade in their motorcycles for an E-Bike? Not likely, but your customers are perfect prospects to add one to their garage. Demographics are on your side. Many of them are getting up in years and could use something for exercise, albeit with some power assist for hills. They have also already proven to you that they can and do spend money when they see products they want. Read about it on page 22 and get ready to sell them a TazerMX! ■

NEWS EVENTS KING OF THE BAGGERS RACE UPDATE

O

riginally, the inaugural Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca was scheduled to be running right about now as part of the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest in Monterey, California. Covid19 changed all that, of course. The revised date is now October 23-25, 2020. While the companies who were invited to compete in this most-unique battle of V-twin machines were scrambling to be ready for July, the added three months will allow them more time to better prepare these machines for something they were never designed for… on-track roadracing competition. In this issue we take a look at two of the entered machines for the race:

Langley said since the photo of the stock machine was taken, it has been torn down to the bone and that the OEM engineering is excellent. He added, “It will not need a complete overhaul to transform the stock motorcycle into a competitive race motorcycle.” Their primary focus includes: • Weight reduction without excessive cost including a lightweight fuel tank with carbon tank cover. • Limited engine changes: Performance Stage 2 camshafts, CNC porting, new ECM calibration and slipper clutch. • Ground clearance improvements including a billet left side engine cover and replica carbon bags. • Chain drive conversion for ease of gearing changes. • Lightweight PM wheels and Klock Werks Klip Hanger bars

S&S CYCLE, INC. When we contacted S&S to see what they were building in their race shop in Viola, Illinois, company President Paul Langley commented, “We are only just starting in earnest.” He added, “This was not part of our plan or budget moving into 2020, so the whole team committed some personal time for this “Skunk Works” project.” Following his humble report, our expectations were fairly low until a few photos arrived showing the level of preparation they are already engaged in on a 2020 Challenger, one of the few, if not only, Indian motorcycles that will be in the race. This is a serious race build.

• S&S race 2:1 exhaust and tuned intake system. • Custom triple trees matched with forks from the FTR 1200. The S&S Cycle project team consists of Jeff Bailey, Dallas Seevers, Gene Dlask, Matt Schmidt, Michael Scott, Dewan Young and Paul Langley. Assistance from Indian includes John Fox, Kyle Ohnsorg and Gary Gray. Their rider will be Tyler O’Hara, a talented racer from Petaluma, California with multiple years of V-twin roadracing experience and extensive Laguna Seca circuit knowledge.

Because of Covid19 limitations, S&S Cycle was not able to begin significant work on its 2020 Indian Challenger until May. The motorcycle has since been completely dismantled and numerous racing innovations have been created as seen on page 12.

merican Flat Track has relaunched its 2020 race schedule to feature doubleheader race weekends. The revised schedule features 18 races over nine doubleheader weekends, and culminates in a two-day finale during Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach. The series kicks off on July 17-18 with the Volusia Half-Mile at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida.

AFT officials continue to collaborate with public health experts to develop this comprehensive plan in accordance with all federal, state and local requirements. All race-day procedures have been thoroughly reviewed and will continue to be examined and updated to follow specific guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local authorities.

In addition to NBC Sports coverage on NBCSN and live streaming of all 18 events via TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold, AFT has worked diligently toward the goal of having fan attendance at all of its venues. This would include the implementation of new health and safety protocols that will help provide a safe environment for all, including reduced capacity, staggered seating, mobile ticketing, cashless transactions and enhanced sanitation.

AT ALL AFT EVENTS NEW GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOLS WILL INCLUDE:

merican Flat Track proudly announced that KICKER Performance Audio is the Official Sound System of American Flat Track.

Starting nearly 50 years ago as a two-man operation specializing in professional systems, KICKER has evolved into a company well-known for its audio products, a range of which are carried by Drag Specialties. KICKER’s fully-stocked line of products includes amplifiers, loudspeakers and subwoofer for powersports and other applications. “American Flat Track fans love to enjoy quality sounds when on their bikes,” said Michael Lock, CEO of American Flat Track. ”We are delighted to partner with KICKER, both to showcase their great American brand to our community and to use their expertise and technology to enhance the fan experience at AFT race events.” As part of its partnership, KICKER will be producing a custom PA system to enhance the fan experience at AFT events. This system will be specifically developed to work with existing jumbotron and victory lane equipment to keep the fans at events tuned into all the race day action. “KICKER Performance Audio is an American icon,” said Kevin Campbell, the director of global marketing of KICKER Performance Audio. “ We have been Livin’ Loud for more than 47 years in Stillwater, Oklahoma. NEWS EVENTS Time to Get Creative CUSTOMIZING IN THE TIME OF CORONA

C

oronavirus. Covid-19. Corona. Covid. The Rona. Whatever you call it, on March 11th it was announced that there was a global pandemic and people and companies around the world would all be impacted. And oh what an impact it was. Seemingly overnight, businesses of all types were closed down and residents worldwide were ordered to stay indoors. Among those businesses were many in Parts Canada’s supply chain and retail dealer network. While still following the continuously changing pandemic protocol, Parts Canada managed to stay the course and kept up delivering parts to dealers. It was an abrupt lesson in managing a new way of doing business, and thanks to the company’s dedicated and hardworking team of employees, things worked out.

The team at Gencycle, of Sorel-Tracy, QC, used its time during lockdown to give this 2009 Harley-Davidson Road King a long, low and lean makeover. Even with the abrupt changes in delivering parts, the store worked with Parts Canada to get the build sheet together.

One of the most drastic changes was e-commerce was thrust upon about all of Parts Canada’s retailers, even those who were still building out their digital commerce platforms and business models. Any dealer that could, quickly adapted to the online order demands of motorcycle enthusiasts who found themselves at home, with time to take on those long-planned projects. Taking orders for curbside pickup became the temporary norm. Michel Guertin used his down time to work with Longueuil, Quebec Parts Canada dealer, Mega Moto Pieces (locally known as Cycle City). His project? Customizing a 1989 Harley-Davidson FXR, work that included swapping in a 117 Milwaukee-Eight motor. Meanwhile, Gencycle of Sorel-Tracy, QC was focused on a 2009 Road King. Both are big projects, but these days, time is on their side. With projects big or small, many of Parts Canada’s V-twin dealers have shown a steady April, May and June increase for parts sales and service. Among the hot sellers were oils and lubricants, tires, wheels, chains and sprockets, and general service parts. Tool kits have also been in hot demand, showing that, whether in a shop or with a DIY project, riders are happily working on the bikes they

E-BIKE LAUNCH

The INTENSE Tazer MX E-bike is the flagship offering of LeMans Corporation’s venture into the E-bike market. The bike features a range of components from wellknown moto brands.

eMans Corporation, parent company of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited, has taken the next step in its groundbreaking move into the E-bike market. In June it launched a prebooking program for dealers looking to carry the INTENSE powersports-specific, electric pedal-assist mountain bike, the Tazer MX.

22

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2020

LeMans officials also announced a range of related parts, accessories and apparel from such well-known brands as 100%, Alpinestars, ODI, Renthal, and THOR. All of the E-bike offerings – including the Tazer MX – will be featured in a stand-alone catalog available to all Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited dealers in September when the first E-bikes will be ready to ship to dealers.

LeMans Corporation VP of sales Jeff Derge says that ever since the company invited INTENSE to present at the Louisville NVP Product Expo in February, feedback from its large dealer network has been incredibly positive. That interest ramped up considerably when LeMans unveiled its plans to carry the Tazer MX, an industry first for an aftermarket distributor. “We have quite a few dealers who are excited about this opportunity. It gives them another product category in their dealerships,” Derge says. “Our commitment was to bring this category to our dealer network, and not require them to go outside the normal channels of how they do business.” There’s always been one particular barrier to fully entering the E-bike business, and that’s the differences between how the bicycle and powersports industries operate.

Trying to make the bicycle industry model fit within the framework of how the powersports business operates just didn’t make sense, Derge explains. While mostly new to the U.S. powersports market, E-bikes and the whole E-mobility movement has increasingly gained steam in the domestic bicycling scene. Overseas, E-bikes are booming in the European bicycling market, something apparent to anybody who has attended the EICMA show in Milan, Italy over the past few years. Additionally, most of the major powersports OEMs already have E-bike offerings that are widely available in Europe. And on the racing side of things, GNCC even added the eMTB – electric mountain bike – class to the series in 2019. In May alone, when the series restarted after being put on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the GNCC Race in Georgia saw 62 entries in the E-bike class.

E-BIKE LAUNCH

MOTO-INSPIRED ROOTS That’s where INTENSE comes into play. Established in Temecula, California in 1991 by founder and CEO Jeff Steber, the mountain bike company has always had a close relationship with motocross and the off-road riding community. Many of the innovative influences that Steber built into his first mountain-bike frames, such as front and rear suspensions, came from off-road motorcycles. Some of the brand’s first fans and riders include extreme sports athletes Mike Metzger and Shaun Palmer, and motocross and Supercross Champion Jeff Emig. Steber says that in the early days of mountain biking, especially downhill racing, the pro riders who raced in the World Cup looked more like downhill skiers. The whole scene had a more European influence, he notes. “Then Shaun Palmer and INTENSE came onto the racing scene and we were actually wearing motocross gear with motoinspired bikes,” he says. “The product, the apparel and the attitude were very moto-inspired.”

Dealer response to INTENSE’s presentation at the Louisville NVP Product in February was incredible, says LeMans Corporation VP of sales Jeff Derge. INTENSE had a booth where dealers could get a close-up look at the Tazer MX and talk with company executives. Todd Olsen photo

In addition to those crossover moto influences, the company also counts as investors and board members former KTM North America president Jon-Erik Burleson and former KTM North America executive Christy LaCurelle. Additionally, Supercross and motocross champion Ryan Dungey and Geico-Honda team owner Jeff Majkrzak came aboard in 2019 as investors in INTENSE. “INTENSE and Steber’s heritage is a big bonus, along with Jon-Erik being part of the company, especially with all his years in powersports at the OEM level, his understanding of the powersports dealer network, and what the powersports dealers’ expectations are for doing business,” Derge says. “It’s a really good fit because both companies understand the segment. INTENSE is such a unique brand in this space. We couldn’t have asked for a better partner in this.” Dungey, Burleson and Steber all laud LeMans for its proactive decision to enter the E-bike/E-mobility market. Doing so not only gets the company and its dealers entry into the E-bike/electric vehicle revolution, it also helps lower the barrier of entry by offering a program that exists entirely within the powersports ecosystem. “I truly believe that this is very forward thinking for Parts and Drag to get a foot in the door with the E-mobility market. Their vast dealer network now has a soft entry into this new exciting market,” Steber says. He adds that this will raise awareness about the electric market, and the E-bike segment is a great way to get started. Burleson agrees, adding, “What we felt by partnering with LeMans Corporation is that we’re casting a wider net. They have the largest dealership network in the world,” he says. “We feel like the upside potential for INTENSE and for Ebikes in general is incredible.”

THE THREE CLASSES ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS • CLASS 1 > E-bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph. • CLASS 2 > E-bikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, but are throttle-assisted. • CLASS 3 > E-bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.

HIGH CROSSOVER APPEAL Steber notes that the Tazer MX is particularly well-suited for the powersports market and has a high crossover appeal with off-road riders and other motorcyclists. Not only is the bike outfitted with products from familiar companies – Magura brakes, Maxxis tires, ODI grips, Öhlins suspension, and Renthal handlebars – it can also be upgraded with new graphics as well as replacement parts. It was also designed to allow for easy battery swaps out on the trail. Riders can carry a spare battery in a hydration pack or keep one in the car, allowing for a longer day of riding. “When talking to the powersports dealers at the Louisville NVP – from off-road to Harley-Davidson – they all looked at the product a little differently than the true pedal cyclists. E-bikes probably fit the powersports enthusiast better than the pedal cyclists,” he says. “The true pedal crowd, that guy wants to hide the fact that the bike has a motor on it. They’re not concerned about the suspension and they want something lightweight and streamlined. On the powersports side, they wanted it to look burly and strong, and they want to see the coil shocks, the grips, the saddle, the suspension. The touch points are very crucial. “I think in the end, this product that we worked with Parts to create is very unique and will have a strong appeal for the powersports customers.” Dungey agrees, adding that riding an E-bike is a whole new experience for many riders, and having motocross brand components on the Tazer MX helps give an authentic ride experience for the moto crowd. Another strong feature of the E-bike market, especially with mountain bike models like the Tazer MX, is that it expands

the range of available riding areas beyond what is possible with a dirtbike or dual-sport machine. Having the electric pedal-assist can also let riders push their limits while out on the trails, either by going further or faster, or even riding with the family,” Dungey says. “It fits a very broad range of uses, which is what makes them so fun,” he adds. In fact, it’s those features that Dungey and others believe it could get many non-riders and former riders back on two wheels. “I think this is an all new audience for this space, which is good for everyone,” Dungey says. “People start riding E-bikes and it gets them back on a bike, and then eventually they are feeling fit enough to reignite their passion on dirtbikes. So all the way around its very invigorating.” Given that the Tazer MX is a Class 1 E-bike — a pedal-assist electric bike with a max assisted speed of 20 mph — and most states treat these bikes like traditional mountain or pavement bikes, and they’re usually allowed anywhere a regular bike is permitted. In many cases, customers will be able to access trails close to their homes, rather than loading up a bike to make a trip somewhere. “The Parts and Drag relationship will really help broaden our customer base to the powersports enthusiast; this is a completely new sales channel for us. The good thing is that there is a lot of crossover between the mountain biking and powersports crowd, and the INTENSE brand resonates well to both,” Steber says. “We were very excited at this opportunity to work with such a professional organization as LeMans, the leader in powersports aftermarket parts distribution.” ■

f there is one constant in life, it is change. Being able to adapt and adjust with current trends, and do it well, is essential to evolution and growth. That determination to keep forging ahead is embedded deeply into LA Choppers’ DNA, and is a major factor behind the company’s continuing success. Starting as a hardcore chopper handlebar company, LA Choppers is deeply rooted in always staying on top of what’s cool. As that market receded and others have taken its place, LA Choppers has continued its mission to manufacture high-quality, American-made handlebars and accessories for all Harley-Davidson models, no matter the current custom trend. Always the trend-setter, LA Choppers continuously expands its product line, adding everything from cable kits and foot pegs, to air cleaners and risers. The company is also always cooking up cool new handlebar designs, and for 2020 set its sights on a material that is decidedly on point in the custom world – stainless steel.

LA Choppers’ new stainless steel Kage Fighter T-Bar is the company’s answer to the increasing demand for performance inspired Harley-Davidson models. We’re talking bikes mounted up with such performance-oriented aftermarket parts as minifloorboards, mid-controls, hot-rod motors, improved brakes and suspension, carbon fiber parts, and stainless steel exhaust systems. All of these accessories help transform a 900-pound cruiser into a canyon carving sport cruiser. Well add those stainless steel Kage Fighter T-Bars to the mix. LA Choppers saw a void in this market and created a handlebar that properly complements all of these popular parts. The company took its already popular one-piece Kage Fighter T-Bar and built it completely out of 304 stainless steel, even brushing the finish to match the grain of a stainless steel exhaust system. These hand-TIG welded bars have beautiful exposed welds and really stand out. The bars come with a few different options, so there is a fitment for everyone. There are straight risers as well as a 2-inch pull-back riser available, and in 10-inch, 12-inch and 14-inch end rises. continued on page 28...

Stainless Steel Twin Peaks LA Choppers has also given the stainless steel treatment to its popular range of Twin Peaks handlebars. The understated 90-degree mitered top not only looks aggressive but adds a serious style upgrade. To expand on this popular line, LA Choppers is now adding a brushed Stainless Steel finish in addition to the current available finishes of Chrome, Gloss Black, and Matte Black. Similar to the Kage Fighters, this Stainless Steel handlebar is 100 percent hand-TIG welded in the USA. The steel itself is brushed for a unique raw look that matches just about any stainless exhaust on the market. On top of that, the welds are exposed showing the beautiful discoloration from the heat of welding. This is an aggressive look that continues to grow in popularity in the Harley world, starting with Dynas and Softails, and most recently with Touring bikes and Baggers.

Hammerhead and Thresher Handlebars What’s a shark-nosed Road Glide customer to do when he wants a narrower handlebar, but not a ton of pull back, that is not a T-bar? Point them toward the new Hammerhead and Thresher bars from LA Choppers. The Hammerhead utilizes the same pointed tip as the Grande Prime Ape, and measures at 1½-inches in diameter. It’s beefy, it looks killer and it is insanely comfortable.

The Twin Peaks handlebars are also now available in stainless steel.

There are three heights available – 12 inches, 14 inches and 16 inches – measured at the grips. With an overall width of 30½-inches, they give the rider that T-bar feel, with a completely different look. The pullback measures at 5½-inches to add to the aggressive riding position of these bars. Finishes are available in Chrome and Gloss Black, matching just about any Road Glide or Road King Special. If the upward pointed tip look isn’t wanted, LA Choppers also has a 90-degree mitered version of this same bar called the Thresher. The overall design is nearly the same, save for some minor dimensional and aesthetic changes. Similar to the Hammerhead, the Thresher is offered in 12inch, 14-inch and 16-inch heights, with an overall width of 30½-inches. The bar itself is 1½-inches in diameter, looking right at home on any Touring bike. Pullback is slightly less than the Hammerhead, measuring in at 4½-inches. These bars are available in Chrome or Gloss Black finishes. ■

Maxima’s high-performance formulations deliver an extremely high level of engine, clutch, and gear protection by providing excellent film thickness and surface tenacity to protect cylinder walls, bearing journals and other critical areas under the harshest conditions. The proprietary, ash-free additive packages keep engines running clean and free of gum, corrosion and deposits.

The ProFilter Premium Oil Filters included in the kits are just as good. Featuring M-Pleat technology, these filters provide a significantly larger filtration area than the OE filter, with a greater capacity to hold contaminants. They can actually extend filter life by 20 to 30 percent. Inside every ProFilter Oil Filter there’s a high-performance anti-drain back valve allowing optimum oil pressure and flow upon start-up, while on the outside a 17mm hex nut and pre-lubricated gasket allow for easy installation. To assure quality, each filter is individually leak-tested on the production line. ■

Slip-Free Performance Spring Clutch Conversions Kits

W

hether it’s high-mileage and excessive slippage or it’s the immediate need for something stronger than stock to harness a hot-rod engine, customers looking to upgrade their Harley-Davidson OE diaphragm-style setup is a popular move. A pressure-adjustable spring-style clutch can be the performance-answer riders are looking for, and when it’s a 1998 through 2017 Big Twin, Barnett has some attractive, affordable options. Barnett’s Big Twin spring conversion kits – available in two styles – can be the easily installed, budget-friendly upgrade riders want. The first option, Barnett’s standard-model spring conversion kit, comes with a precision-machined billet aluminum pressure plate and two full sets of heavy-duty coil springs. It’s a direct replacement for the stock diaphragm spring/pressure plate assembly, a bolt-in with no modifications required. There are both cable- and hydraulicactuation models available, too. The clutch can be adjusted by mixing and matching among those two differenttension spring sets Barnett supplies so customers can tune their spring-pressure choice. By using all the springs of one set, all the springs in the other set or mixing the combination half-and-half the clutchpressure can be ideally set for smoother shifting, a stronger grip, a more progressive, easily modulated feel and linear clutch engagement. The second choice, Barnett’s low profile lock-up pressure plate spring conversion kit, ups the ante. It comes with three different sets of coil springs (light, medium, and heavy) to fine-tune the lever feel and clamping pressure. More significantly, the lock-up model also features stainless steel weighted arms that progressively increase pressure to the clutch as rpms increase. It’s a design greatly enhancing the clamping capacity of the clutch pack while still keeping lever effort to a minimum.

and derby covers (except 2013 through 2019 narrowprimary models with the assist-and-slip clutch) and there are also cable- and hydraulic-actuation models available. Coupling either of those coil-spring conversions with a Barnett extra plate clutch kit brings that clutch upgrade to the next level. Featuring Carbon or Kevlar segmented friction plates and tempered steel drive plates increase clutch surface area by 10 percent to 20 percent (depending on the application). Thanks to the the segmented design of Barnett’s friction plates, oil flow throughout the clutch is increased for smoother, more consistent performance and extended life. All this is a drop-in OE replacement. ■

s the riding season progresses, so does innovation behind the scenes at Custom Dynamics. The team there has been busy designing and producing its mid-season release of new products, which are now in stock at Drag Specialties. The focus of the new products is, as always, to add safety and visibility for riders while also giving a Harley-Davidson a unique look. The Run and Brake LED Backrest Light proves that you don’t have to have a big product to have big visibility. This petite triangular light contains 100 chip-on-board LEDs for maximum brightness. The rear running and brake lights are mounted on a bracket that is available in both chrome and gloss black finishes. A simple plug-and-play adapter harness is included, and the light is compatible with Harley sissy bars and passenger back rests. Touring riders who want an extra burst of illumination for oncoming traffic can opt for the Dynamic Lower Fairing Inserts for Harley Touring models. These inserts are a direct replacement for the stock lower fairing grills or filler plates, which means the lighting unit simply snaps into place and plugs in for an instant visibility and style upgrade. light and an amber turn signal. When the turn signal is activated, the running light turns off completely to make sure the amber signal is the center of attention. Reflectors are a great way to increase visibility at night, but why stop there? Custom Dynamics designed the Amber LED Front Fork Lightz as a replacement for the stock Harley front fork reflectors on models with dual front brake calipers. The amber LEDs are the same color as a reflector but add a much higher level of visibility. The super-bright, dual intensity LEDs enhance both the running lights as well as turn signals for increased safety. rofessional motocross racer, freestyle pioneer, team owner, bike builder. That’s already a lot of titles for one person to have, but Carey Hart has another one – Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador.

For the past year, Hart has been helping rep Drag Specialties at events around the country, with Daytona Bike Week and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally among his favorites. When events came to an abrupt halt earlier this year due to COVID-19, it didn’t stop Hart from continuing in his role as ambassador. Most recently, he took over Drag’s social media during a ride through California. In fact, for Hart, this worldwide pause has been a chance to get in more riding than usual. “This time of year is traditionally busy with events, shooting content and bike building. I’ve had a chance to catch up on old projects, do some short rides around central coast California and consistently put laps in on my motocross bike,” Hart says.

38

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2020

And while he’s as disappointed as everyone else about events and races being cancelled, he optimistically adds, “I think this will make everyone more excited for 2021.” Earlier this year, Hart wrapped up his 2020 Indian Challenger build, though he is still fine-tuning things like the suspension and brake setup. He’s already planning his next Indian build, which is getting underway this summer. For Hart, it’s impossible to pick a favorite among his custom bikes. “I have a connection to all the bikes I have built,” he admits. “Probably my two favorite bikes in my stable are the road race bike that won The One Moto show, and the B-17 Bomber sidecar bike that I built for my son, that won the Hot Bike Tour. Now that it’s warming up, my son and I are going to start putting some miles in!” The types of bikes Hart builds vary in style, but he says they all have one thing in common – performance upgrades inspired by his motocross background. says, “I really like to set my bikes up for my riding style. That usually transpires into brake upgrades, suspension upgrades, light wheels for quick turning and bar/seat adjustments to get a good fit.” Of course, a bike needs to look good, too, and Hart prefers paint schemes inspired by classic motocross and MotoGP designs.

No matter what style bike Hart builds, there is one common theme -- performance.

That performance aspect is something that Hart feels can benefit both riders and dealers. “I think for the consumer it makes a better ride, and a safer ride,” he says. “With that said, I think the dealers can really maximize on suspension upgrades, braking upgrades, ECU programming, better tire selection, aggressive seat and bar options and chain conversion kits. I think it will add more categories than the old days of exhaust, wheels and seat.” ■

COMPANY PROFILE

Passion and Determination Celebrating Two Decades of Innovation

Already a 5-year-old company, Legend Suspensions had a big presence at the 2005 Daytona Bike Week.

B

ehind nearly every business in the motorcycle industry is a story of passion. Dreams of big profits and acclaim aren’t what get people involved in this segment. Rather, most pursuits begin with a genuine personal interest and succeed due to determination and innovation. That’s certainly the case for Jesse Jurrens and his company, Legend Suspensions, which has been in business for over 20 years now. The company offers hundreds of part numbers that encompass front and rear suspension options for every Harley-Davidson your customers ride, but it all started rather simply, with a personal desire to develop one part to improve one bike.

That bike was Jurrens’s own Softail. He had lowered it, “but the suspension I tried just beat the tar out of me,” recalls Jurrens. Since he couldn’t find what he was looking for on the market, Jurrens set about tinkering in his own garage designing an air shock. He tried modifying existing parts from other markets – like the units used in tractor-trailer seats – but nothing worked. He’d reached the limits of his own abilities, but was passionate about finding a solution that would allow him to enjoy his Harley, so he eventually hired an engineering company to help him realize his ideas. That led to some workable designs, but the air spring itself wasn’t reliable. So Jurrens went to Gates Rubber Company, a premier rubber manufacturer, seeking help with a prototype. They turned him down. Repeatedly. But an employee got wind of Jesse’s idea, and going against company orders, supplied Jesse with the prototypes he was after. Clearly, Jurren’s passion resonated with the guy. The test units worked, and Jurrens was able to put his new air shock into limited production. By this point, however, Jurrens had invested several years and all of his money into the project. Luckily, Jurrens’s business acumen included providing samples of his air suspension to popular builders and setting up a display booth at trade shows. At the 1998 Indianapolis Trade Show, he got his big break. The newly formed Legend Air Suspension company garnered the “Most Innovative Product” award for its air suspension components.

Through trial, error, grit and plenty of determination, Jesse Jurrens developed his first air shock that was ready for market. Here a first generation air shock gets inspected back in 1997.

That recognition led to enough sales that Jurrens was able to move his operation out of his basement and into a real shop in Rapid City, South Dakota. Continuing to invest everything he had continued on page 42...

The REVO ARC shocks (top) and AXEO fork kits are just a couple of Legend's high-performance suspension products for Harley-Davidsons.

into his venture, Jurrens incorporated as Independent Cycle, overseeing the Legend Air Suspension brand as well as the Hardlife and Lowlife frames lines, which were products Jurrens was committed to making as he pursued his own passion for custom builds. In the following years, Jurrens never let off the gas or stopped pouring himself (and his profits) back into the business. As a result, acclaim and success followed. In 2002, Jurrens received the “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. In 2005 he was named “Trendsetter of the Year” by Easyriders magazine. His frames received accolades on their own, and were used to win bike-building contests. His products and company were even featured on Discovery Channel’s popular Biker Build-Off show. In recent years, Jurrens focus has returned to what sparked his passion in the first place – suspension. Legend Suspensions still offers a vast array of highquality, made-in-America air suspension that feature a true lifetime guarantee, but Jurrens has also branched out into the performance coil-suspension market. The REVO ARC shocks and AXEO forks are Legend’s latest products – with fitments available for the Dyna, FXR, Sportster and Touring platforms – and they integrate all the knowledge, passion, and innovation Jurrens has to offer. “We develop products to cure problems,” says Jurrens. That was the impetus behind Legend’s first air suspension, and it continues to be the inspiration more than 20 years later. “We designed the new REVO ARC and AXEO products specifically for what the Harley-Davidson rider wants and 42

how the chassis is meant to handle.” To that end, ride quality is a huge priority, but so is performance. Cornering, hard acceleration, and emergency braking are all scenarios Jurrens considered when designing these new products. “The biggest compliment we hear from customers,” Jurrens laughs, “is that once they put our parts on their bikes they’re no longer searching for potholes to avoid.” The new REVO ARC shocks and AXEO fork kits use the most advanced spring and damping technology, but Jurrens implements features in a way that’s easy for your customers to use. For example, no tools are required to make changes to spring preload or damping – everything can be accomplished by hand in the garage or while pulled over on the side of the road. “Our adjusters have six or seven steps, and we make them very noticeable so it’s easier for the rider to tune,” says Jurrens. In addition, each suspension component comes with straightforward illustrated instructions that make it easy for your techs or your DIY customers to install the parts. A detailed setup guide is available to guide your customers toward an ideal suspension setup. And as always, every Legend Suspensions component comes with a lifetime guarantee. With such a commitment to his passion, it’s no wonder Jesse Jurrens has enjoyed so many years of success. And there’s no doubt that Legend Suspensions will continue its strong history of quality and innovation. ■

German Oils, Additives and More

I

f you watch MotoGP, you’ve probably noticed the LIQUI MOLY banners around the track. The German company has a long history manufacturing oils, additives and other chemical products, but they are new to the Drag Specialties family this year. By adding LIQUI MOLY to the lineup, dealers have a new and extensive range of product choices. In all, there are more than 60 LIQUI MOLY products available through Drag Specialties. The company focuses on creating premium products that deliver outstanding performance. These products range from various motor oils that cater to specific types of riding to additives, grease, fork oil, brake fluid and more. For riders, there is even a LIQUI MOLY visor cleaner. Whether it’s a necessary fluid like oil or protectants like the anti-seize compound, LIQUI MOLY has it. One of the most notable products for Drag dealers is the HD Synth SAE 20W-50 Street motor oil, which was developed specifically for Harley-Davison models with both air-cooled and water-cooled engines. The selected base oils and highquality additive components ensure optimum lubrication while working to keep the engine clean and the friction between moving parts at an optimal level.

LIQUI MOLY offers the H-D Classic SAE 50 oil for older Harley models. The high-wear resistance and corrosion protection are ideal for extending the life of the engine in a classic motorcycle.

For older Harleys, LIQUI MOLY offers the H-D Classic SAE 50 oil. The high-wear resistance and outstanding corrosion protection are ideal for extending the life of the engine in a classic motorcycle. The oil also reduces engine noise for a more enjoyable ride. Both of the LIQUI MOLY oils for Harleys are available in one-liter and four-liter bottles. LIQUI MOLY was founded more than 60 years ago. The first product the company produced when it got started in 1957 was an oil additive that contains a solid lubricant called molybdenum disulfide. That product, still produced today, is where the company got its name: LIQUI, because it is a liquid additive, and MOLY because of the molybdenum disulfide. All of LIQUI MOLY’s oils and additives are produced exclusively in Germany, where the company has earned accolades as a consumer favorite. There are over 4,000 different items in production, covering industries from motorcycling and automotive to bicycles, construction, boats and small aircraft. LIQUI MOLY is closely involved in motorsports, and it is the exclusive oil supplier for teams in Moto2 and Moto3. Outside of motorcycles, LIQUI MOLY also sponsors teams in sports car racing and a range of winter sports, like ice hockey. ■

Performance Cranks for Milwaukee-Eights

S&S Cycle has turned more than six decades of performance-crank building experience toward the MilwaukeeEight engine platform, thus opening up a whole new level of performance for these motors.

F

or more than 60 years performance cranks have been a staple of S&S Cycle’s go-fast lineup, and they remain a core competency of the brand. In fact, the company has transformed building stroker cranks into something of an art form.

than twice as strong). The company’s high-strength connecting rods are designed using Finite Element Analysis to eliminate weak spots and create a part that can handle substantially more power. This super-strong construction eliminates the need to weld the crankpin.

Now the team at S&S Cycle has focused its expertise toward the Milwaukee-Eight engine platform on 2017 and newer Big Twins, and in doing so, has opened up a whole new level of performance for these motors.

These new flywheel assemblies for the Milwaukee-Eight are available in 4.375-inch, 4.5-inch and 4.625-inch stroke, with tapered or high-strength, full-width wrist pins to accommodate even the most intense of builds. Each one of the flywheel assemblies are also available with or without the counter-balancer gear.

Flywheels are at the heart of any performance engine and S&S Cycle has created a product that is strong, durable and trued to highly exacting standards. The result is a new flywheel assembly that serves as a perfect starting point for building a truly epic, high-performance MilwaukeeEight engine. In building these stroker cranks, S&S Cycle uses a heattreated 4140 material, resulting in an assembly that’s harder and 114 percent stronger than the OE parts (more

One suggested build from S&S Cycle would be to pair the 4.625-inch stroker crank with the company’s 128-inch Power Package to create an absolute 131-inch monster of a motor. Performance Bagger indeed. ■

FATBOOK BUILD

Clean, custom, built to ride. It’s the latest movement in the Bagger world and it’s all about form with plenty of function. This isn’t just a better-looking Harley-Davidson, it’s a better Harley overall.

50

“I

think we’re going to see a lot more bikes like this one,” Joe Houpt begins. He’s speaking from hands-on experience. Joe and the whole Race Shop Team at Suburban Motors HarleyDavidson in Thiensville, Wisconsin, have been getting customer requests for Baggers built in this style for quite a while now. That style is the Performance Bagger and the team at Suburban is responsible for the rebuild/make-over of this 2019 Road Glide Special, “It’s a movement, and it seems to be getting bigger all the time,”Houpt adds. What it’s all about is making a turn towards customizing a Bagger to not only make it look better, but to also make it be better. The goal is a clean, good-looking Harley, sure, but it also has to be a lot more practical. There will be a better ride, better handling, improved acceleration and braking, just a better performing motorcycle overall.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2020

Besides emphasizing a clean, pure look, whatever was added had to also improve the motorcycle overall, even help with the rider-interface with the choice of the seats and controls. Naturally, things like the lighting and even the audio systems are taken into account, as well. The goal is to build a better Harley-Davidson Bagger, in looks and performance. “We made a real effort to keep this one super-coordinated,” Houpt says. He and the Suburban team chose well and did exactly that, even though the parts list got pretty long, and the additions and upgrades came in from a wide variety of FatBook vendors. Subtle in the extreme, the bike is deceptively simple looking. It could easily be dismissed as just an extra-clean Road Glide Special, which it is. But it’s also a whole lot more, an inspired mix of custom delivering performance.

From the Klock Werks Flare windshield and Custom Dynamics headlight up top, to the Pirelli Night Dragon tires hitting the pavement, everything added to this Road Glide was picked to improve performance and look good doing it.

To get there the Suburban team neatly blended things like custom handlebars and floorboards, a couple custom-bike traditionals, with things like a full suspension upgrade from Legend Suspensions. There are 13-inch REVO-A adjustable coil-suspension units on the rear, up front it’s a +2 AXEO 49mm high-performance front suspension kit. Those now-upgraded forks are custom-clean with the addition of Arlen Ness Hot Legs, Fat Tire boot covers, and a short 8-inch Fat Tire fender.

The custom/performance mix continues with the choice of wheels, tires and brakes. Ness 7 Valve forged billet rims were teamed with Pirelli Night Dragon tires, chosen in a sensible 180/55-18 size. And for the upgraded braking there are Performance Machine four-piston Contrast Cut calipers and big, 14-inch Ness rotors. It all looks good, but works even better, Performance includes what the rider gets to feel, too, so from the Saddlemen Step-Up seat and the protection of a

Klock Werks Sport Flare windshield to the easy reach of the LA Choppers Grande Twin Peaks handlebar with PSR adjustable levers, there’s a real increase in comfort and control. The Performance Machine Superlight floorboards will really help a rider stay planted. The onboard instrumentation’s been upgraded, too. It’s now a full Dakota Digital MLX four-gauge package. The roads ahead are brighter and better illuminated than ever, thanks to the inclusion of a Custom Dynamics TruBeam LED headlight assembly, and some ProBeam LED fog lights. Audio upgrades come courtesy of a full Wild Boar audio system, 600Watt amp right through to all the speakers. All this is just some of what Joe Houpt and the Race Shop Team included into this version of a Performance Bagger Road Glide. There’s plenty more, like the 1S&S Cycle pipes, Rekluse clutch, and *Trask’s free-breathing air filter to name just three. To find it all you’ll have to take a good, long look at this bike. But be forewarned, not much is going to jump out at you. Like we said, the bike’s deceptively simple looking. But everything needed for a true, complete, Performance Bagger transformation is here. Show this one to your Bagger-riding customers. Chances are they’re more than a little interested in this style and the idea of taking a good HarleyDavidson and making it a great one. The FatBook has everything needed to get them there. ■

FATBOOK BUILD

Performance Baggers can be stylish. A Rekluse RadiusX clutch kit with a gloss black derby cover, a Trask cam cover, Ness 10-Gauge lifter-block covers and more are all part of this build. A Saddlemen Step-Up seat with lattice stitching and Performance Machine floorboards also went on.

50 Years of Performance Celebrating a Golden Anniversary

Performance Machine’s Revolution Wheel will help decrease unsprung weight and rotational inertia, making for better performance and handling.

The lightweight Assault wheel in Black Ops and Gold Ops

R

ight from the start, way back in 1970 when Perry and Nancy Sands opened the doors to their new company, Performance Machine set a quality standard for the motorcycle aftermarket.

Five decades later and celebrating a Golden Anniversary, Performance Machine is still raising the bar. Style, innovation and quality remain at the core of Performance Machine. Then and now it’s been the hallmark of everything carrying the PM logo. And today there’s a lot wearing that logo. Even a quick look through the FatBook will attest to that, and to how all-encompassing Performance Machine has become. There’s everything from forged custom wheels in a range of styles and finishes to the company’s line of brake calipers and rotors. Of course, that’s just the start. There are also hand and foot controls, custom designed rocker boxes and engine covers, air filter kits, grips, mirrors, fork leg kits, custom fork sliders, extended length kickstands and more. It’s broad range that continuously expands thanks to Performance Machine’s innovation and passion.

For 2020 alone, Performance Machine has three new wheel designs available. There are all new radial mount brakes, and there’s a new and improved line of Raceline brake discs. Not stopping at that, PM has also introduced a revolutionary line of Black Ops and Gold Ops finishes. It’s a new look available on a number of products throughout the lineup from wheels to controls to covers. While style is king in all of this, as it’s always been, the quality and function Performance Machine is known for is never compromised. The trio of new lightweight performance wheels, the Pro-Am, Assault and Revolution, are perfect examples. With their Black or Gold finishes these three lightweight wheels are hard to miss. It’s custom Performance Machine styling at its best. On average, these wheels are several pounds lighter than any other wheels in the PM lineup. The payoff here, other than the good looks, is a significant decrease in unsprung weight and rotational inertia. Performance is enhanced across the board. A Harley’s ride quality, acceleration, braking and handling all get a major boost with Performance Machine’s newest lightweight wheels. Take a look through the FatBook and find out what’s new at Performance Machine. Ask about those lightweight performance wheels and the new Mid-Controls and other new products for the Milwaukee-Eights. ■

Tires for Racking Up the Miles

D

unlop has V-twin riders covered when it comes to choosing the right long-lasting tire, whether a customer needs a purpose-built tire for touring and cruising or an OEM replacement.

Riders who want a capable touring and cruising tire packed with the latest technology can opt for Dunlop’s American Elite® tires. And, as is fitting for an American motorcycle brand, Dunlop makes the American Elite tires in the USA.*

The D402 is a tried-and-true tire that was designed for Harley Touring models. It’s available in black sidewall, slim white sidewall (shown), medium white sidewall and wide white sidewall.

Your V-twin riding customers will appreciate the advantages of Dunlop’s American Elite tire, a list that includes long wear, excellent lean angle, stability, sure grip in the wet and neutral steering manners.

The Dunlop D402 is not just an OEM replacement; it is the OEM tire. In fact, the Harley-Davidson name is right there on the sidewall. Dunlop has been OE on many Harley-Davidsons, dating all the way back to 1983. Like the American Elite, these tires are made in the USA.*

In addition to longevity, the American Elite tires provide excellent stability and handling for a truly confidenceinspiring tire. The rear tire features Dunlop’s MT Multi-Tread technology. That means the rear tire has a long-wearing compound in the center to help increase longevity and extend tread wear, while the shoulders are made from a softer compound that provides outstanding lateral grip when cornering. With American Elite tires, riders no longer have to choose between great mileage and handling capabilities. Compared to a single-compound tire, the American Elite offers a lot of advantages. Longer wear, greater lean angle, better stability, more wet grip, more neutral steering characteristics, and greater bump compliance are just a few of the performance improvements a rider can expect. The American Elite is available in 28 size and style options to fit a huge array of motorcycles, including most HarleyDavidson, Victory and Indian models. Customers can choose a black sidewall, narrow white sidewall or wide white sidewall.

The D402 is a tried-and-true tire that was designed for Harley Touring models. Its high-mileage characteristics make it an outstanding tire for riders who like to spend quality time in the saddle. The D402 is constructed from a three-ply polyester casing with two fiberglass belts to help increase stability, a must for touring bikes. In addition to its longevity, the D402 is also capable of load bearing, easily handling a bike with a full complement of luggage. Your customers can’t dictate the weather during a trip, but they can be well-equipped for every scenario. Dunlop designed a computer-optimized tread profile with offset center grooves to improve stability and rider confidence when riding over rain grooves and steel-grated bridges. The D402 is the OE tire for a wide range of Harleys, including various Touring, Sportster, Dyna, Softail and Trike models. The D402 is available in four sidewall styles, including a black sidewall (BW), slim white sidewall (SW), medium white sidewall (MWW) and wide white sidewall (WWW). ■

Oils and Lubes Formulated For V-Twins

Bel-Ray’s range of oils and lubricants are formulated exclusively for modern Harley-Davidson models. The company’s American-made products help the V-twin engines meet their full potential while continuing to run smoothly.

V

-twin riders know that their bike isn’t just a form of transportation. It’s something special, and it should be treated as such. That means keeping it fed – or, rather, well hydrated – with fluids that are made specifically for the bike’s engine. Bel-Ray has developed oils and lubricants exclusively for modern Harley-Davidson models. The company’s American-made products help the V-twin engines meet their full potential while continuing to run smoothly. The secret is in the chemistry that makes up the blends of oils and additives. For air-cooled Harley engines, Bel-Ray’s V-Twin Synthetic oil is a premium 10W-50 multi-grade synthetic option. The oil is enhanced by high-performance additives to provide reliable viscosity, engine component protection and optimal operation. Exclusive Bel-Ray anti-wear chemistry reduces valve train wear and keeps pistons and rings from scuffing. The synthetic base oils and additives result in a superior film strength, too, meeting Bel-Ray’s highest viscosity index. What that means is that the V-Twin Synthetic oil improves viscosity protection, even at high temperatures. Exceptional shear stability also reduces viscosity loss. Because the oil reduces friction in the engine, operating temperatures are decreased to help extend the engine’s life. The oil doesn’t just tackle, heat, though. Cold starts are both safe and easy thanks to the formula. The Bel-Ray Big Twin transmission oil is designed to help a Harley’s transmission function both smoothly and quietly.

The oil is also designed to retain its properties despite high temperatures and wear. Oxidation protection prevents the temperatures from degrading the oil, and high-viscosity-index base oils maintain their film strength over a wide temperature range. The oil also resists viscosity breakdown caused by gear-shearing action. An added bonus is that the transmission oil helps a rider find neutral easier. As for the noise-reduction attributes of the Big-Twin transmission oil, it improves lubrication to help reduce firstgear clunk, and it reduces or even eliminates gear whine. Bel-Ray V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant is a speciallyformulated, high-quality lubricant built specifically for the primary chaincase of all Big Twin models. It offers improved lubrication compared to motor oil and is ideally suited to withstand high pressures. In addition to a performance boost, the V-Twin primary chaincase lubricant also increases the lifespan of the clutch and chain. Exceptional friction additives, less clutch slipping and chatter, plus smoother operation in hot stop-and-go traffic are additional perks. Both the transmission oil and the chaincase lubricant are produced in a distinctive red color to help detect any leaks. ■

Hot Rod Bagger

Performance Exhaust for Big Bikes Now there’s one more. Developed in conjunction with Chris Rivas of V-Twin Specialties of Fresno, California, this latest addition to the Road Rage lineup is designed especially for those mega-inch, high-horsepower engines showing up in the newest Milwaukee-Eight Baggers.

Bassani now offers its Road Rage 2-into-1 systems for those mega-inch, highhorsepower engines showing up in the newest Milwaukee-Eight Baggers.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better team to collaborate on this new pipe than the performance engineers at Bassani and Chris Rivas. He’s a long-time NHRA Pro/Stock racer and championship engine builder, the first guy to top the 200 mph mark on a Bagger at Bonneville. Teaming with Bassani on a performance pipe just for big-inch, big-power engines was a natural and Rivas just happened to have a beauty to work with, a perfect test mule for that new Bassani pipe. Custom built by Rivas himself, the M8 was brought out to 130 cubic inches and from its cam and ported heads to the 64mm throttle body and welded and balanced flywheel, it’s a combination good for 172 horsepower and 163.77 foot/pounds of torque. And of course that new Bassani pipe plays a big role in all of this.

T

here was a time when a 74-cubic inch engine in a Bagger seemed huge, a displacement that now seems quaint with 131-cubic inch powerhouses coming straight from the Harley-Davidson factory. And that isn’t even taking into account all the displacement possibilities from the aftermarket. To a lot of riders bigger has indeed become better. Something else proven true is the power boost a 2-into-1 style exhaust adds to a V-twin. For years Bassani Xhaust has delivered exactly that, 2-into-1 power-building pipes for everything from Dynas and Softails to Sportsters and Touring models. Bassani Road Rage systems are available with long-megaphone mufflers, short, upswept megs, and straight-can mufflers with the choice of Chrome or Black finishes. There are even hand TIG welded stainless steel systems.

Developed especially for engines like this one, this Road Rage 2-into-1 is a triple-stepped design. The equal length head pipes start with a 1¾-inch diameter before opening up to 2-inches and finally 21/8-inches before emptying into a specially designed collector. The system finishes off with a 4-inch muffler featuring a removable 3-inch baffle. The sizes and precise locations of those steps, and the design of that baffle, were carefully worked out by both Bassani and Chris Rivas to optimize performance in a max effort engine. These latest Road Rage exhausts are recommended for engine builds producing 140 horsepower or more. That being the case they’re available in Touring model M8 applications with the choice of either a Chrome or Black finish with full heat shields, custom-fluted billet end caps and O2 bungs included. ■

proper functioning clutch doesn’t just help a motorcycle keep running as intended – it can also make a big improvement with the whole riding experience. EBC Brakes helps keep riders happy by providing the components necessary to build a clutch that is reliable and easily capable of dealing with all riding conditions. EBC Brakes is now producing clutch kits for most HarleyDavidson, Indian and Victory big twin applications, so the list is bigger than ever. Customers can choose from several clutch kit options, including direct OE replacement or an upgrade from OE that offers an improved feel and positivity. The EBC Standard CK Series clutch plates are ideal for general street, sport and touring use. The plates feature EBC’s unique alloy particle-impregnated clutch facings. This cork-based material with aluminium particles helps increase durability and heat resistance, and it helps prevent clutch slippage. The CK Standard Series kit includes a complete set of friction plates which are quality checked for flatness to provide the correct stack height for each application. The highly-compressed construction avoids swell and in turn helps against clutch drag.

SRK Series clutch kits are quality checked for flatness and the correct stack height for optimal performance. EBC also produces complete CSK clutch spring kits. All springs are pre-set, shot peened and heat treated for durability. This process offers an improved spring rate compared with standard springs. Of course, swapping out a clutch is much easier with the right tools for the job! EBC produces clutch tools for most modern motorcycle applications. The tool holds the center basket hub while the retaining bolts are loosened and/or tightened. This method helps minimize the risk of damage to the parts for a stress-free clutch swap. ■

Riders who are looking for a positive feel and a faster take-up can opt for EBC’s SRC Series clutch kit. The friction plates are lined with aramid fiber, which helps extend the life of the clutch while further increasing heat resistance. The kits also include heavy-duty clutch springs of either the coil or diaphragm type. The EBC SRK Series clutch kit offers a complete clutch pack with steel separator and friction plates together with heavy-duty clutch springs, all designed for more durability and long life.

Rising to the Occasion Road Glide Riser Adapters

Thanks to THRASHIN Supply’s new Road Glide riser adapter kits, your customers can now mount up the company’s bar risers and handlebars to 2014 and up Road Glide Special, Road Glide Limited, and Road Glide CVO models.

E

ver since THRASHIN Supply Company opened its doors in 2014, the focus has been on building accessories like foot pegs, bags, and bar risers for Harley-Davidson’s more compact bikes. Popular platforms such as the Dyna and FXR are THRASHIN’s specialty, because those are the bikes that company founder Lance Coury owns and was most interested in.

“The open road is so much more enjoyable on the bigger bikes, there’s more comfort behind the fairing, and of course there’s the stereo.” Those long rides piqued Coury’s interest in Baggers, but he still wasn’t sure he was ready to pull the trigger. “Then I saw the 2020 CVO Road Glide,” Coury recalls. “I fell in love with it, and knew I had to have one in my garage.”

More recently, however, Coury’s interests have evolved, and he’s added a Bagger to his garage. A 2020 CVO Road Glide, to be exact. And while the CVO is already equipped with a host of high-end parts, a tinkerer like Coury can always find ways to improve it. Which is how he came to develop the Road Glide riser adapter kit that allowed him (and now your customers) to mount THRASHIN’s bar risers and handlebars to the 2014 and up Road Glide Special, Road Glide Limited, and Road Glide CVO. With THRASHIN’s parts, your clients can fully customize their bike’s cockpit to offer a better fit and unmatched style.

With this new machine at his disposal, Coury and his crew have set to work adapting the company’s existing lineup of popular parts for the Road Glide platform. And the first place they started was with the bars. “I wasn’t a fan of the stock bars,” Coury says. “It felt like I was pushing a wheelbarrow – my arms were by my sides and so low.”

Coury’s road to Bagger ownership was a long one, literally. “I’ve ridden to Sturgis from Southern California six times now, on small bikes as well on rented Baggers,” says Coury.

64

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2020

THRASHIN already offers a lineup of bar risers in 6-inch and 8-inch straight, and 6½-inch and 9½-inch pullback, in both hard-anodized black and triple-plated chrome, to fit all Harley models with a 3½-inch center-to-center mounting (that includes the majority of bikes from the late 1980s on). However, the parts wouldn’t fit the Road Glide due to the way the bar mount affixes to the dash. A solution was needed.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

THRASHIN

The result was an adapter kit that allows 2014 and up Road Glide Special, Road Glide Limited, and Road Glide CVO riders to fit any of THRASHIN’s Risers to their bike for a fully customized bar setup. The kit includes a machined 6061 billet-aluminum bracket that shifts the mounting location up by 2 3/8 inches and toward the rider by 1 5/8 inches, thereby avoiding interference with the speedometer and tachometer gauges. The adapters accept any of THRASHIN’s risers, which in turn support any of THRASHIN’s three different bar designs. The riser adapter is secured using two grade-8 steel bolts that thread into THRASHIN’s own combined bushing nuts. “One of the cool things we did,” Coury explains, “is that we made the bushings solid, and we made the bottom bushing integrate the nut. So the mount is steel on steel, it’s a very solid connection.” The bushing nuts replace the OEM rubber vibration-damping bushings, eliminating the squishy feeling that Coury disliked about the stock setup. By eliminating the flex, riders experience more precise steering response and superior feedback while braking and cornering. The OEM bushings are there for a reason, right? To eliminate vibrations? That’s the intent, but you can assure your customers that the Road Glide’s Milwaukee-Eight has enough inherent balance that annoying vibrations aren’t an issue. “I’ve already done a few 2,000 to 3,000-mile, week-long trips and haven’t felt anything,” says Coury. Pro motocross rider Cole Seely and Rusty Butcher’s Mark Atkins put the products on their bikes and love them, and THRASHIN has received a number of other solid reviews from customers, Coury adds.

The riser adapter kits shift the mounting location up by 2 3/8 inches and toward the rider by 1 5/8 inches, thereby avoiding interference with the speedometer and tachometer gauges.

While increased grip vibrations aren’t a concern, it’s worth pointing out that the riser adapters do require modifying the plastic gauge housing. The kit comes with detailed instructions as well as a template to mark the cuts, making the job fairly straightforward. Additionally, due to the location of the adapter bars, the fork lock and accessory features no longer function. Thankfully, you can remap your customer’s key to work like the CVO’s switch, which uses the accessory switch on the hand controls. With the riser adapter kit, Coury is happier with his Road Glide, and your customers can be too. THRASHIN’s floorboards and adjustable brake arm also work on the Bagger, so your Road Glide customers have plenty of highly functional and attractive parts to apply to their bikes. ■

ance & Hines is back into the action big time. Following a full, month-long COVID-19 shutdown as mandated by the CDC and the State of California, the Vance & Hines Santa Fe Springs facility is once again up and running. The company is producing and delivering all those air, fuel, and exhaust products at full speed and keeping the Drag Specialties warehouses full. Everything from the Fuelpak tuners to the full lineup of air filters to all the Vance & Hines exhaust systems, all of it’s available right now. Given the prolonged hiatus, the team at Vance & Hines now has the throttle pinned, and is introducing new designs and new applications, even for some just-released additions to the lineup. First up is the Torquer 450 slip-on. Originally developed to give a deep, throaty roar to a Milwaukee-Eight Bagger, the Torquer 450s did that and more. Besides delivering

that much needed sound enhancement, the big, 4½-inch bodies and custom end caps of the Torquer 450s are a great custom addition to the look of a Touring model Harley. They also really perform thanks to the specially designed and patented LS-275 louvered baffles. Your customers will notice an instant seat-of-the-pants boost in power. Vance & Hines now offers up the high performance and great looks of the Torquer 450 slip-ons for 2016 and earlier Twin Cam Touring models. Drag Specialties has these new application Torquer 450s in stock and ready for delivery. That means Twin Cam Bagger owners can also enjoy that deep-and-throaty exhaust bark and added power. Even better, all those great features are available to them at a great retail price. The Torquer 450 for Twin Cams start at $599.99 for the pair in Chrome, $649.99 in Black. That’s less than any other 4 ½-inch Vance & Hines slip-on in the Touring-model segment.

ichelin launched the acclaimed Michelin Commander II tire for the cruiser segment at the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Since then, Michelin has been committed to giving dealers the support, sales programs, marketing materials and knowledge that help sell V-twin tires and keep customers happy. More recently, Michelin kicked off the launch of the Michelin Commander III tires at the 2019 Daytona Biketoberfest and 2020 Daytona Bike Week. The Michelin Commander III Touring and Cruiser tires are engineered to provide improved handling, longevity and wet-weather characteristics for V-twins. As part of the Daytona festivities, Michelin had an exclusive consumer promotion to encourage early adoption of the new tires by riders and their riding groups. Since the promotion prompted riders to head to their local dealer for the tires, Michelin ensured dealers were strongly positioned to sell the new range with an abundant supply of excellent point-of-sale material. They included product brochures, counter mats and an array of Michelin-branded items provided by Eric Miller, the Michelin account manager for LeMans Corporation, the parent company of Drag Specialties.

68

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2020

This kind of commitment is more important than ever, and Michelin remains dedicated to working closely with dealers to provide outstanding customer experiences and sales opportunities. The key for dealers is to have ample inventory on hand and to work closely with the Drag reps to identify the top-selling sizes. Your Drag rep can also ensure that you have all the latest display materials, from tire shoes to racks, signage, window stickers and current literature that highlights the product range and features. In the late spring, while the status of the 2020 Sturgis rally was still unknown, Michelin made the commitment to have a significant presence at dealerships throughout the Sturgis area, no matter what. The decision was easy for Michelin – dealers still need support, and riders still need new tires, with or without a rally. It was during the 2018 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that Deadwood Custom Cycles owner Jason Mook got his first real experience with the Michelin brand. The Deadwood, South Dakota, dealer already sold Michelin tires, but it wasn’t until Mook’s Drag rep approached him about setting up a promotion to install Michelin tires during the rally that things really came together.

MICHELIN

“We rolled the dice and went for it,” said Mook. “It was then that I began to see clearly about the Michelin brand. Of course I already knew their reputation of quality and had ridden several motorcycles equipped with Michelins, but we were kicking it into overdrive. We installed nothing but Michelin tires during that rally, with immediate positive response from our customers. Not to mention the excellent customer service and attention I received from Eric Miller, our contact person from Michelin. I felt as if Eric and Michelin had immediately welcomed Deadwood Custom Cycles into the Michelin family, and we were part of their team. The program was a great success, and after the rally, I kept in stock several sizes and fitments of the Michelin tires we had received.” Mook was impressed, but what really solidified his relationship with Michelin was the chance to experience the tires on his own motorcycles. “A couple of my personal bikes were ready for new tires, and I didn’t even hesitate to install Scorcher and Commander II tires on my mini-fleet of motorcycles,” he said. “Of course I started to put these tires to the test on my personal bikes, ripping through Spearfish Canyon and Needles Highway (yes, it’s much more fun to ride

Michelin’s Commander III Cruiser tires are specifically made to deliver even more wet grip and durability than its predecessor, the Commander II, making it a stable platform even in bad weather.

these routes when they aren’t packed with rally-goers), and conducting my own un-official tire research and development. To say I was satisfied and happy with the results was an understatement.” Deadwood Custom Cycles was again an official Michelin tire destination for last year’s Sturgis rally. After the changes and sacrifices made due to COVID-19 in the early part of the 2020, Mook echoes many other dealers with his enthusiasm for the chance to catch up with fellow riders once again while continuing to offer outstanding products and service. Of course, since Deadwood Custom Cycles is located near Sturgis, riders from all over North America pay a visit. “What I’m really excited about is when I get the opportunity to talk to out-of-town riders, swap stories and help them get the most performance out of their American V-twin,” said Mook. “And with me and my shop, a big part of that equation is installing Michelin tires on the bikes.” ■

ust because a part is functional doesn’t mean it has to be boring. A lot of times, it seems that the factory forgets that when it comes to handlebar controls. The controls are up front and on display, yet they are often overlooked as an opportunity to enhance the styling of the motorcycle itself. That’s where the Drag Specialties controls and control kits come in. Designed to fit with all of the OE components, these controls offer a simple swap that results in a big style change to the front of the bike. Previously, Drag only offered these controls in chrome, but they are now available in a matte black finish, as well. Dealers and customers are to thank for the new addition: Drag was getting so many requests for control kits in black that they were finally added to the lineup. These handlebar controls are made exclusively for older bikes, ranging up to 2013, so they can be found in the pages of both the OldBook and FatBook. Updating the handlebar controls is an easy way to give an older bike a fresh new look. Drag offers the new matte black finish in three different configurations – handlebar control kits without switches, handlebar control kits with switches, and brake/clutch control kits. In each kit, the levers are constructed of

die-cast aluminum, and all of the hardware necessary for installation is included. The handlebar control kit without switches comes with the matte black clutch lever assembly with clamp half, a master cylinder assembly with clamp half, and the right and left switch housings. The OEM wires and switches fit directly into the housings, so there is no need to do any rewiring. There are fitments for both single-disc brakes plus dual-disc brakes. Since these controls are designed to work with the stock bars, they will fit all one-inch diameter handlebars. The Drag handlebar control kit with switches goes one step further, providing everything needed to replace the entire control setup. Absolutely everything needed is included in this kit, including pre-cut wires, to make the upgrade as easy as possible. The black matte brake/clutch control kits are available for FLT applications, including an option for a 15mm master cylinder. The master cylinders accept OEM-style rebuilt kits and have clearance for all 1¼-inch handlebars. Customers can also order the switch housings separately, including housings for radio and cruise control switches. ■

OPEN-DRIVE KITS

Twin Cam Love Open-Drive Upgrades

R

emember Evo-engine Harley-Davidsons? With those Milwaukee-Eight engines garnering all the attention these days, remember that there are a whole lot of those 80-inch single-cam engines still around. Ditto for the early-generation Twin Cams that followed. Good thing the team at Belt Drives LTD haven’t let time stand still when it comes to those classic motors. The company offers a major upgrade to replace a 1990-2006 Twin Cam FL’s enclosed primary-drive with an open-drive kit that uses a more civilized toothed composite belt to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. BDL’s kit is the EVO-220, an open-primary conversion for 1990 through 2006 Big Twin Touring models in need of a new primary drive. BDL’s kit uses the stock OE foot-shift shaft that’s located at the front of the BDL motor plate. The kit includes two shift-shaft cones – one for heel-toe shifters, the other for toe-shift only. Both cones are threaded to screw into the BDL motor plate, so installation is straightforward and vibrations are kept to a minimum.

BDL has open-drive primary conversion kits for 1990 through 2006 Big Twin Touring Models.

BDL points out that both the motor plate and the covers are machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum, so you know they’re built for tough use. The design of the primary conversion allows it to be used with floorboards. The conversion kit also includes a performance clutch ball bearing lock-up assist pressure plate, and a 132-tooth K-Glass primary belt. That belt is strong enough to handle most high-horsepower applications for those Evo and early Twin Cams. That performance clutch provides strong, slip-free, lock-up performance. The kits also feature a 69/52 pulley combination for a 1.327 primary ratio. The EVO-220 conversion comes in either of two finishes, black anodize or traditional chrome, making it an ideal way to dress up one of those older engines. Like all of Belt Drives LTD’s products, the conversion kit is manufactured in the USA. ■

Passion for Products Celebrating 25 Years of Custom New from Cycle Visions are these 3-inch Fork Tube Extensions. There are fitments for 39mm, 41mm and 49mm fork tubes.

Cycle Visions’ Slick Signal conversion kits allows your customers to clean up the tail section of their bikes by relocating the license plate beneath the rear fender on select models. The license plate frames feature LED lights that can be used for turn and stop applications.

andy Aron’s vision quest was simple: Establish a reputable motorcycle shop in San Diego, California, where Harley-Davidson owners could take their bikes for front-line service and repair. At least that was the plan when he opened the doors to Cycle Visions in 1995. “I started making special parts for some of the customers’ bikes, and soon other customers saw what I was doing, and they asked if I could make them similar products for their bikes,” Aron says. Those requests led to limited production runs, and by the following year one of his components, the Bareback saddlebag mount for Heritage Softails, found its way into the FatBook. Overnight Cycle Visions’ focus expanded. “The Bareback is still in the FatBook today,” Aron adds. In fact, there are more than 200 custom components bearing the Cycle Visions label now in the FatBook and the OldBook. Like the Bareback, all of Cycle Visions’ products have practical applications, helping maintain their evergreen popularity through the years. For instance, the Fork Tube Extension kits that fit Dyna, FXR and XL models with 49mm forks have become favorites among the younger generation of Harley enthusiasts. The tube extenders, available in 1 inch, 2 inch and 3 inch lengths, enhance what has become the California, or West Coast, look for those Harleys. Among Cycle Visions’ most recent bolt-on items is the Slick Signal, a conversion for relocating the license plate beneath the rear fender for select Dyna and Milwaukee-

Cycle Visions supplies many other parts to Drag Specialties’ vast inventory, but one thing that Randy shares freely with his customers is his affection and enthusiasm for riding. Aron makes it a point to follow Drag Specialties’ lead in supporting the sport, too. He’s participated in many of the popular annual dealer rides, and he’s a member of the Hamsters USA organization that’s known for supporting charities across the nation. He also has an affection for older bikes — he and his restored 1929 Harley-Davidson JD have participated and finished in two Cannonball Rides. In 2014 he accompanied Drag Specialties Magazine publisher and editor-in-chief Don Emde’s Cannon Ball Baker tribute ride that traced the legendary motorcycle rider’s 1914 cross-country trip from San Diego, California, to New York City. Randy’s ride? His modified FXR, complete with extended suspension and semi-knobby tires to tackle the off-road portions of the trip. As he jokingly says about his converted FXR, “It’s the dual-sport bike that Harley never made.” It’s been a memorable ride for Randy Aron and Cycle Visions, and looking into the future, the vision only looks brighter. Happy 25th anniversary to Randy and everybody at Cycle Visions. ■

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Big Twin Beauty New Life for Old Hogs

I

t’s fitting that Andrews Products was among the parts vendors to appear in the OldBook’s 2010 premier issue. After all, Andrews had been in the motorcycle aftermarket parts business since 1972 when John Andrews formed his Illinois-based company to produce high-performance *camshafts for Milwaukee’s favorite motorcycle. At the time Harley-Davidson’s lineup consisted of bikes powered by Shovelhead and Ironhead XL engines using clunky 4-speed transmissions to direct power to their rear wheels via greasy and noisy pin-and-roller drive chains. A lot has changed since then – Harleys now boast smooth-shifting 6-speed transmissions spooling power to quiet, long-life fabric drive belts that spin the rear wheel. Andrews Products has kept up with those changes, expanding its product line to include Evo, Twin Cam and current Milwaukee-Eight models.

No Shovelhead or Ironhead XL restoration is complete without adding a set of cams from Andrews Products’ extensive lineup.

Even with those additions, Andrews continues to make its original camshafts – and more – for those early, and still popular, Big Twins. Flip through the 2020/2021 OldBook and you’ll see what many of the leading Harley-Davidson restorers and enthusiasts already know, that Andrews Products remains a tenable and reliable source when it comes to breathing new life into old Hogs. Indeed, among Andrews’ most popular replacement parts are its 4-speed and 5-speed transmission components. Complete gear sets and individual parts are listed. Transmission gears made of high-nickel alloy steel that’s heat-treated and shot peened for long life are joined by drive dogs with milled lead-in ramps for improved shifting and less wear. Shifter dogs and forks, bearings and bushings and more are listed. Like all Andrews components, they’re made in the USA. The generation of 5-speed transmissions have their own Andrews replacement parts, too. Moreover, Drag Specialties customers have their choice of stock replacement gear sets or close-ratio gears for their 5-speed boxes. No doubt, Andrews’ line of replacement camshafts represents its own journey down Memory Lane. Old-timers, even enthusiasts new to old Harleys, realize the significance in camshaft names like EV3, A, AB and R5. They’re direct links to Harley’s, and Andrews’, past, their lobes originally created by John Andrews to address a need for more power from Shovelhead and Ironhead engines. These and other Andrews components remain favorites among today’s engine builders passionate about blending all the right components into their motorcycle restorations.

Dig into that OldBook and check out the selection of 4-speed and 5-speed transmission components from Andrews Products.

“When you get down to it, those (camshafts and transmission parts) are the two product groups that put Andrews Products on the map,” notes Tom Motzko, Drag Specialties’ vendor relations guru. Of course, Andrews Products currently offers much more than camshafts and tranny gear sets. The list runs from pushrods (adjustable and solid) to valve springs to camdrive gears, even the Super-Volt Coil for Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads, Evos and Ironhead XLs. ■

Easy-to-Install Custom Bars

agnum Shielding’s Viking handlebars aren’t just great looking, they’re also an absolute breeze to install and wire up, and come fully loaded with that well-known Magnum quality.

It’s a common complaint – handlebar swaps often come with the headache of routing the internal wiring and lines in a reasonable amount of time, and without damaging the wiring harness. The Viking bars were designed to eliminate that hassle, and feature a clean, burr-free internal radius, as well as 50 percent additional clearance within that troublesome peak of the handlebar. The pocket has enough room to allow the complete wiring harness with the factory vinyl covering and the terminal connections (when wiring extensions are added), along with their respective shrink sleeves, to easily pass through and be installed without any hang-up or frustration. Electronic throttle control wires can even be pulled through at the same time. To make the job even easier, Magnum includes its EZ pull-thru sleeving, which is pre-loaded into every Viking

Select chrome handlebars also include Sterling Chromite installation kits. To complete the installation of black Viking handlebars, Black Pearl kits are available separately. For customers on a budget, Magnum offers its economical XR Stainless Kits. The kits include all of the required cables and terminated wiring extensions, OEstyle fittings and manifolds, as well as DOT brake lines for ABS and non-ABS applications. ■

he Maverick seat is one of the most popular touring styles available from LePera Motorcycle Seats. It has a lot going for it, from a comfortable, supportive design to clean lines that blend in with the motorcycle. The Maverick is also one of the most customizable seats in the LePera lineup, offering options for riders of all sizes. The Maverick Daddy Long Legs Tall is designed for touring riders who need all the leg room they can get. Even the tallest of riders won’t feel cramped with a rider’s seating area that is moved 2 inches back from stock and cushioning that is 2 inches thicker than the standard Maverick, offering more leg room both horizontally and vertically. In addition, the extended seat results in a longer reach to the handlebars, so long arms can stretch out. The Maverick features a deeply-sculpted bucket, which creates ample back support for the driver to increase comfort. The seat has a 14½-inch wide driver seating area and a passenger seating area of 13 inches, ideal for a touring bike where comfort is an absolute necessity.

The Maverick Daddy Long Legs Tall is built for touring riders who need some extra leg room.

The Maverick is available in three sizes. In between the standard-sized Maverick and Daddy Long Legs Tall, the Maverick Daddy Long Legs moves the rider 2 inches back but retains the standard height. The additional height in the Maverick Daddy Long Legs Tall doesn’t result in awkward extra bulk because the thigh area is tapered to provide a comfortable stance both when riding and when stopped. ■

New Fitments for Twin Cams

K

B Performance Pistons now offers its highperformance Super Duty series for Twin Cam engines, including those with 85cc Bathtub or 95cc Tear Drop combustion chambers.

Super Duty series dome fits both Bathtub (left) 85cc heads and on Tear Drop 95cc heads (right).

New KB Super Duty pistons have a dome shape to work with those two style heads, the applications include 103-, 110- and 113-inch factory engines, and big-bore options up to 117˝. KB’s Super Duty piston also fits Harley-Davidson’s optional MVA and CVO 95cc heads.

The Super Duty pistons feature KB’s proprietary Line2Line skirt coating to improve sealing, reduce mechanical noise and prolong piston skirt life. This abradable polymerbased material lightly hones piston skirt clearance during initial break-in, resulting in a permanent and ideal oil-film thickness. Should the piston expand further due to excessive heat, the coating will again burnish against the cylinder wall to safely maintain clearance to prevent further scuffing. KB measures each skirt bore before the pistons are coated, and the dimension is then laser etched beneath

the piston crown for reference by a machinist who adds .0025 inch to the cylinder bore dimension for the final fit. To counter heat build-up, KB gives the piston crown and top ring groove a Type 3 hard anodizing treatment to deflect heat from the piston crown, plus to prevent micro welding on the top ring. Super Duty forged-aluminum pistons are supplied with a top ring made of steel with a nitride coating, a ductile second ring with a Napier design, and a high-tension 3.00mm oil-ring pack that is thicker than stock for better oil control and lubrication. Upgraded wrist pins have increased wall thickness, and each kit includes spiral locks. ■

Work Smart

New Oil Dipstick Tool

J

IMS is known for creating some handy tools for Harley-Davidson technicians and enthusiasts. The philosophy “Work smart, not hard” clearly is part of the JIMS mantra, and a good example of that is the new engine oil dipstick insert tool (p/n 3801-0393) that fits inside the JIMS dipstick socket tool (p/n 3801-0195). The handy insert tool is made of blue Delrin, an industrialgrade non-marring plastic. Strangely, this tool’s origins date back to 2012 when Harley-Davidson engineers changed the FL lineup’s dipstick design from a socketstyle cap to a finger-grasp cap. The goal was to make it easy to reach and remove the dipstick, but as any service technician or shade tree mechanic knows, the best-laid plans can go awry.

The insert tool is manufactured in the USA and is guaranteed for life. The insert has a cutout to clear around the exhaust pipe. It fits inside the existing JIMS socket, which has a square hole to accept a 3/8-inch ratchet, and provisions for a 7/8-inch hex for wrench fitment. The insert is also available as a kit (p/n 3801-0394) that includes the JIMS socket for early-model Big Twins. ■

» Talk with your Drag Specialties sales rep for more information about this and other JIMS tools, and visit www.jimsusa.com.

The new engine oil dipstick insert tool from JIMS makes it easy to remove the dipstick cap on newer Harley-Davidson FL models.

In this case the finger-grasp cap remains in a hard-to-reach location. However, by slipping the insert into the JIMS’ dipstick socket tool a service tech can easily reach the dipstick’s finger-grasp cap using the JIMS insert tool rather than use his bare hand. Once in place, twist the socket tool to loosen the oil dipstick’s cap, and the job is done. New Drag Ad.pdf

High-Performance Coils

M

ost enthusiasts understand that spark plugs should be changed periodically and that plug wires eventually deteriorate. However, there’s a second piece to the ignition puzzle — the coil, which supplies the energy to the plugs that ultimately ignite the fuel/air mixture.

ACCEL Supercoils create up to 25 percent more energy than OE coils. That extra energy comes in handy for customers with high-performance motors.

This energy is not to be confused with voltage, which creates electrical current. Voltage fills the plug gap initially with spark, but it’s the amount of energy from the coil that ignites and burns the gasoline, and ACCEL Supercoils create up to 25 percent more energy than OE coils. An engine can never have too much energy for ignition, because a stronger spark is more apt to ignite the fuel/air mixture than a weaker spark, especially for fuel-injected engines with their lean spots to meet emissions numbers. Basically, there should be more energy available than the engine needs, especially with high-performance motors. That stronger spark for late-model Harley-Davidson Twin Cam models and Sportsters is found with ACCEL’s direct replacement performance coils. For 1999 and earlier Harleys,

ACCEL offers single-fire and dual-fire coils, available in oldschool yellow, black or a chrome-like finish (certain models). Most ACCEL coils work with electronic ignitions and points, too, but when using an aftermarket electronic ignition, check the ignition company’s website for the coil with proper resistance. ■

roper oil crankcase pressure is essential to a well-lubricated engine. Too much pressure and you get blow by; too little pressure and you might experience blow up. Here’s an affordable way to manage crankcase pressure for late-model Harley-Davidson Dyna and FL Twin Cam and current-generation Milwaukee-Eight engines, Feuling’s new Billet Vented Dipsticks. Feuling’s dipsticks vent excessive crankcase pressure from the oil tank through a positive crankcase valve (PCV) consisting of an oil separator system, perforated disc, replaceable filter element and an umbrella flapper valve. There is no special machining or drilling required for installation – simply unscrew the oil tank’s OE dipstick, and replace it with the screw-in Feuling unit.

The other dimple, labeled FHU (Full Hot Upright), is used when checking oil level with the bike in a fully upright position. Feuling’s Vented Dipstick is available in fade-resistant black or polished finishes, and comes with full instructions. Today’s Harley-Davidson rider can be that traditional big-bike touring fan, a sport-oriented ripper with a tricked-out Dyna, an obsessed custom builder on a slammed-low Softail, or someone into the hooligan racing scene. There’s no single definition. Except one. DP Brakes has the upgrade brake pads for all those riders. With DP there’s a sintered-metal performance upgrade for every Harley with disc brakes. There are upgrade DPs for all the popular aftermarket calipers, too, the ones from GMA/BDL, Brembo/Jaybrake, HHI, Pro One and Performance Machine. They’re even OE with Arlen Ness, HHI and Performance Machine.

The most popular pick, the DP Standards, are customformulated to deliver a significant improvement to any Harley-Davidson braking system. The performance is strong, clean, quiet and fade-free. There’s an extended service life as well, up to three times longer than OE. For aggressive, sport-oriented riders there are the SDP pads, the RDP Racing pads (recommended for track use) or even the Drag Specialties Premiums By DP. They all feature high-quality HH+ friction-material for a strong initial bite with consistent, powerful, controllable performance, all with low lever effort. With DP pads, stopping distances get shorter, feel becomes more controlled. The pad’s ceramic heat shields protect against fade, there’s no squeal and because they operate so cleanly there’s never any dust. No wonder many police departments and riding schools coast-to-coast choose DP. ■

Heated Grips with Style

H

ere’s an oxymoron that makes sense – heated motorcycle grips are cool. That is, they’re cool looking, if they happen to be Avon Heated Grips that come in many of the company’s popular non-heated hand grip styles, right down to the custom end caps featuring either black or chrome finishes. Avon’s most recent heated grips fit late-model Harley-Davidson Road Glides ranging from 2015 to present that have re-engineered clutch perches to shroud the hydraulic clutch reservoir. Summertime is a great time for your customers to replace or add heated grips, especially if they plan on swapping out their handlebars. Turned off for summer riding, they’re ready to go when it’s time for chilly fall and winter rides. To adapt heated grips to the Road Glide, the reconfigured Avon Heated Grips’ control switch exactly matches the stock perch for 2015-2020 Road Glide models. Matching the Road Glide’s stock perch lets owners enjoy custom heated grips that look, well, cool!

Customers with HarleyDavidson Road Glides from 2015 to present can now add a set of Avon Grips heated grips thanks to the re-engineered control switch that matches the stock clutch perch on these bikes.

As with all Avon Heated Grips, the new Road Glide kit comes with a wiring diagram to assist in assembly. Notably, the heated grips are powered by the bike’s accessory wire, eliminating the chance of a rider leaving the grips turned on after shutting down the engine. And like all Avon Heated Grips, the Road Glide replacements are easy to operate, featuring High, Low, and Off settings. Position the switch to the desired setting, and then enjoy the ride. ■

USB CHARGERS

Lithium Friendly Versatile USB Charger

L

ithium starter batteries are becoming more popular, with many motorcycle OEMs introducing models that come stock with a LFP (Lithium Ferrous Phosphate) battery. They deliver more cranking amps, but with less amp-hours.

OptiMate has a full range of portable USB chargers that are compatible with lithium starter batteries. To protect against depleting a battery charge, the devices have an automatic standby mode that turns off charging an hour after a vehicle is parked.

As these batteries grow in popularity, customers should know that it’s important to monitor draw when the vehicle is parked. If those smaller lithium batteries drop below a 30 percent state of charge (13V), they might not restart the engine. This is especially important to note given the demand for USB chargers to supply power for phones being used as GPS units or for helmet cameras and other portable electronics. The OptiMate line-up of USB chargers deliver from 2400mA to 3300mA, guaranteeing a fast charge for any connected device. Better yet, these USB chargers are lithium battery friendly. A unique and important feature of the OptiMate’s USB charger line is its automatic standby mode – it turns off charging to the USB device one hour after it senses the

vehicle is parked. That is sufficient time to recharge a helmet camera or other device that was not charged while riding, and it leaves enough charge in even the smallest lithium battery to restart the engine. With that engine running again, OptiMate USB automatically come out of standby, confirming battery voltage has risen above 13.3V. That’s also a clue that the vehicle’s charging system is in good shape, good to know if the rider’s adventure is well off the beaten path. Choose from portable USB chargers such as the O-100, O-105, O-115 or the O-108 / O-108KIT, which can be permanently installed on the vehicle. ■

t’s expected that your customers will customize their Harley-Davidsons to some degree, and for those who are serious about modding, that means making the engine bigger. More cubic inches means better power and bragging rights, but it also means more work for the stock starter motors, which can falter and fail under the load. That’s where the Slugger High Torque starter from Terry Components comes in. It’s available for Harley models from 1986 to present and offers more cranking power for quicker, smoother, more reliable starting no matter how huge your customers go with their engine build. Simply put, the Slugger starter is bigger and stronger. While a modern stock starter is rated at 1.4Kw, the High Torque starter has a 1.8Kw output, offering a 29 percent increase in power. That means it won’t labor or strain to turn over a big engine. Terry starters are also built to a higher quality than OE components. They are hand-assembled in the USA with high-end windings, a heavy duty clutch, and a thicker commutator that resists flying shorts. The commutator is also static balanced to ensure smooth operation. Since the starter is just one component in a system, it’s important to match your customer’s new Slugger High Torque motor with a Terry Components Super Flexible Battery Cable. These cables leave the OEM parts in the dust and deliver maximum power from the battery with minimal voltage loss, which leads to quicker starts and longer battery life.
