Where Does Bagger Racing Go From Here? by D on Em de

nothing but positive since. It was great to see the collective brain-power that had figured out how to take a couple hundred pounds of weight off a stock Bagger, and also how to add some extra ground clearance. The first race was an entertaining new chapter in the legendary Harley-Indian Wars that has been going on for over a hundred years. In this case the S&S Indian grabbed the first King of the Baggers crown ahead of the Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson and ten others. The number of YouTube views of the television coverage went into uncharted waters as people were so amazed that those giant road bikes – bags and all – could be ridden so fast on a road course.

Brian J. Nelson

T

his time last year we reported on the announcement at the Louisville NVP about a new racing event called the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers. At that point, the race was going to be held in July at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. Like most things in our lives, however, the Coronavirus forced a delay of the event to October, held in conjunction with a MotoAmerica roadrace weekend. In the months leading up to the race, what we heard mostly about the King of the Baggers concept from people who are not in the V-Twin segment of the industry was laughter. They just could not imagine people trying to race a Bagger, some compared it to racing motor homes. But those of you who are reading this are into V-Twins and you know the business for Performance Baggers has been growing every year. When the participating teams arrived at Laguna Seca in October, the public got its first look at the machines they had built, and it has been

So what’s up for 2021? MotoAmerica has expanded the concept from one event to three. The King of the Baggers will be featured at Atlanta, GA (4/305/2), Elkhart Lake, WI (6/11-13) and Monterey, CA (7/9-11) with television coverage on Fox Sports. Drag Specialties helped get it all started in 2020 and to keep it going, has signed on as one of the participating sponsors of the three-race series.

But that’s not all! Rob Buydos, the brainchild of the Race Bagger concept has announced a stand-alone 4th event which will have Drag Specialties as title sponsor. Instead of mixing the Baggers at a race with the metric bikes, Rob has created a whole new package called the Bagger Racing League. The idea is a V-Twin-only event with a bike show and races for Hooligans, Sportsters, Stunters and Big Twins on the same day as the Bagger race. Details can be found in this issue in our Bagger Racing League story starting on page 32. Save the date: June 25-27 at the Utah Motorsports Campus (formerly Miller Motorsports Park), near Salt Lake City Utah. Bagger racing is here to stay. ■

s a master custom builder, Don Hotop was known as a man of few words and as a craftsman with an impeccable eye for detail and a commitment to perfection. If you were a customer of Don’s, you could be sure that the bike he built for you would get you from one side of the country and back, no sweat or worry. As the owner of Don’s Speed & Custom in Fort Madison, Iowa for more than 40 years, Don was a longtime associate of Drag Specialties and built nine well-known customs for the FatBook. Under the Drag/Hotop Designs banner, he also developed a number of products that are still available in the FatBook and OldBook. Don, a member of the Hamsters USA Organization since 1982, and a recipient of the Arlen Ness Lifetime Achievement Award in the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, died February 22nd at the age of 69. Don’s relationship with Drag Specialties began back in the early 1990s due to his membership in the Hamsters USA, recalls Drag Specialties’ Tom Motzko. It flourished because of Don’s unsurpassed talent and attention to detail. In addition to his work as a builder, he was also a longtime Drag Specialties dealer. Don’s quiet demeanor belied his vast motorcycle knowledge. “Everybody will tell you this, Don didn’t say a lot,” says Motzko, “but everybody knew that when Don decided he was going to say something, you knew to pay attention.” Well-known and well-loved, Don’s reputation as a “builder’s builder” fueled a deep reverence in the custom motorcycle world, whether it was an up-and-comer or one of the legends in the industry, everyone looked to Don for advice. “Whether you’re talking about friends, motorcycle acquaintances or industry colleagues, as a whole, Don was always looked up

to, even by Arlen Ness, who would call Don on occasion to get advice,” Motzko says. His reputation led to an appearance on builder Jesse James’ hit TV show, Monster Garage, in 2004. That expertise and storied status in the upper echelon of custom builders also meant that Don was a good person to consult after completing a custom bike. “If you brought your bike over and had Don take a look, it didn’t matter what it was, Don would look the thing over and he wouldn’t miss a thing,” says Motzko. “He would fold his arms, and if he gave it a nod, that meant you hit the mark.” Don is survived by his wife, Terena Hotop of Fort Madison; one son, Garrett Hotop of Fort Madison; two daughters, Alexis (Dustin Gordy) Hotop of Cedar Rapids, and Tara Newton and her children, Morrigan, Genevieve and Loeathan all of Altoona; two sisters, Darla Hotop-Farrell and Debra Kruse of Fort Madison; and his mother in law, Tillie Kramer of Fort Madison. I

n a relatively short time the reborn Indian Motorcycle brand has come a long way. Beginning with bikes combining vintage looks with up-to-date mechanicals, the range now includes a number of popular models. There are contemporary styled Baggers, a line of stripped- down Bobbers and cruisers, the flat track-inspired FTR models, and most recently the liquidcooled Challenger, a sport-touring Bagger that breaks new ground for any brand. Riders have flocked to every one of these Indian models and, V-Twin riders being who they are, immediately began customizing their bikes. Of course, Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited responded with its first

FatBook/OldBook catalog dedicated to all the add-ons and accessories just for those Indians. For 2021 that catalog’s cover features a fully customized version of that latest Indian model, the Challenger. It’s a multicolored, panel-painted stunner, the creation of Carey Hart and it deserves a good look. Carey Hart is best known as a pioneering freestyle motocross superstar and the first rider ever to complete a backflip on a 250cc motorcycle. He’s also behind the chain of Hart & Huntington Tattoo Company shops and is married to Grammy Award winning recording artist Pink. That Carey Hart is also a long-time American V-Twin rider.

The Indian Challenger is a fantastic platform for customization, as shown here by longtime V-Twin fan Carey Hart. The sporty Bagger offers plenty of good looks and performance.

Before the re-emergence of the Indian Motorcycle brand that meant Harley-Davidsons, plenty of them. “I’ve probably had 15 or more Harleys over the years,” Hart says. “Softails, Dynas, FXRs, Road Kings, you name it. And, since I was really close friends with Jesse Rooke I’ve had a couple of his hardtail customs, too.” Primarily though, Hart adds that like many V-Twin riders, he’s a tinkerer. Stock doesn’t stay stock in his garage. “I have a nice shop, and I’ve always prepped my own race bikes,” he says. “It wasn’t much of a stretch to customize all those V-Twins a little.” He’s being modest. Hart has tinkered with custom Harleys that have become magazine feature bikes and show winners. Multiple times.

A ride on a friend’s Indian shortly after the brand’s Sturgis relaunch back in 2013 shifted that V-Twin focus. “I really liked that bike and its Thunder Stroke 111 power,” Hart remembers. “I liked the feel of it, and when I looked into the brand, the direction they were going, I liked that, too. I was the one who actually pursued Indian Motorcycles to become a partner with them.” All that was a lead-up to Hart’s participation in the debut of the Indian Challenger. “As much as I liked everything that had come before it, I really liked that bike,” he says. “I immediately knew I had to get a Challenger of my own.” This bike is it, and after Hart’s tinkering, it’s definitely one of his own.

As envisioned by Carey Hart, this Indian Challenger is a stunner. And, because Hart likes to rip, it's also designed for some high-performance fun.

Carey Hart opted to add a pair of his signature Hart-Luck V-Twin grips from ODI.

Carey is far from alone in his admiration of the Challenger. With its 120-plus horsepower liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine, its lightweight cast-aluminum frame, inverted front suspension, hydraulically adjustable rear shock and customizable throttle mapping and traction control, the Challenger ticks off a lot of the right boxes. Add in big, waterproof saddlebags, plenty of wind protection from a chassis-mounted fairing and poweradjustable windscreen, electronic cruise control, full LED lighting and a high-output audio system and the Challenger has all it takes to slip right into Hart’s preferred riding style. “It’s a long-distance machine,” he explains. “That’s the kind of riding I do with my buddies. We’re not bar hoppers, we go the distance. Week-long trips covering thousands of miles. The Challenger is built for that.” But remember, V-Twin riders are V-Twin riders so as good as that OEM Indian was, Carey Hart had to make it his own. His changes, other than a spectacular paint job by Chris Wood at Airtrix in Santa Barbara, aren’t immediately noticeable and they weren’t drastic. They

18

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

did, however, add up to a bike customized to meet the very specific needs of its rider, and Hart wanted “. . . a light, well-balanced, good-handling and strong-stopping motorcycle. Not one with just a crazy powerful engine.” Towards that end Carey called on plenty of his friends and contacts from the racing world, shops that designed a custom-built all-titanium exhaust system, another providing lightweight carbon-fiber wheels. The work also included re-valving of the Indian’s shockabsorbing characteristics front and rear, and a combo of performance brake calipers and race-style rotors. To make things even more pleasant on those long-haul rides there’s a Klock Werks windscreen in place of the Indian’s OE screen, a Signature model Saddleman seat and Dunlop American Elites on those carbon-fiber wheels. “To me, it now feels and handles more like a sportbike than any kind of Bagger,” Hart says. “It’s just a superbalanced motorcycle, the total package. And, with that paint job Chris added, styled like a front-row GP bike from the 1980s, it also has the look.” That’s what Carey Hart did with his Indian. Other riders on other models like Chiefs, Chieftains, FTR 1200s, Roadmasters, Scouts and Springfields might have different plans for their bikes. And there’s a whole catalog just chock-full of parts and accessories to help them in that quest. Take a look at Hart’s Challenger; it’s worth the time. And make darn sure Indian riders get a good look at that 2021 Indian catalog. That’s worth the time, too. ■

Smooth Moves

Oils and Fluids Designed for V-Twins

G

iving V-Twin engines top-notch care just became easier with a new line of Drag Specialties high-performance motorcycle oils and fluids formulated specifically for V-Twins.

New products means new packaging, of course, and this new line is designed to look attractive sitting on a shelf while also imparting clear information at just a glance. The V-Twin design cues make it obvious what kind of bikes these oils and fluids are made for, and the bold labeling helps customers quickly find the right oil for their model. It is also worth noting that all items in this new Drag Specialties line are sold “each” instead of just by the case. That way, dealers can order the exact amount necessary, even if it’s just one quart. Drag Specialties partners with high-quality brands and manufacturers to give V-Twin riders great quality products for their motorcycles, and of course oils and fluids are no exception. Drag Specialties lubricants use high-quality base oils and motorcycle-specific additives that meet OEM warranty requirements and ensure each product will provide the best protection and performance for the specific application. Additionally, all of the oils and fluids are formulated, blended and packaged in the USA.

20W-50 DS3

Engine Oil Drag Specialties formulated its V-Twin engine oils specifically for bikes that need extra protection from heat and higher rpms. The formulas are also designed to provide smooth shifting and clutch engagement. The star of the new Drag lubricants line is the Drag Specialties Premium 20W-50 DS3 Synthetic oil, which can be used as motor, primary and transmission oil. In testing, the 20W-50 DS3 outperformed OEM oil by a significant amount, with a 21 percent reduction in viscosity loss. Since consistent viscosity is critical for protecting transmission gears, the 20W-50 DS3 will keep an engine running longer and more smoothly compared to the OEM version. The oil also has built-in detergents that keep the engine components cleaner, further adding to the performance and longevity of the engine. While the other Drag Specialties oils are available only in a one-quart size, the 20W-50 DS3 Synthetic is available in quart, gallon and 55-gallon sizes.

SAE 20W-50

SAE 50

SAE 20W-40

The other two Drag Specialties Premium Synthetic oils available are the 15W-60 and 20W-40. Both of these fully-synthetic oils are specifically engineered as multi-fill lubricants for Indian Motorcycle models. The oil enhances

both engine protection and clutch performance, and they are suitable for air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines. Additionally, Drag Specialties offers six varieties of mineral-based engine oils. Three of them – 20W-60, 20W-50 and 10W-40 – are designed for V-Twins being ridden in various ambient temperatures. The SAE 50, SAE 60 and SAE 70 mineral oils are specifically designed for pre-Evolution V-Twins, with the three options also covering various operating temperatures.

Premium 80W-140 Synthetic transmission oil

Transmission/Gear Fluids Drag Specialties has four transmission fluids specifically formulated for each of the common Big Twin transmission types. The Drag Specialties Premium 80W-140 Synthetic transmission oil is ideal for riding in hot weather. The fully-synthetic formula is designed for high-performance transmission gear boxes, and it has high-strength film protection and high shear resistance to provide outstanding wear protection and durability. Extreme Pressure (EP) additives further enhance the life and health of the gear box.

High Performance Big Twins Primary Oil

Additionally, Drag Specialties has three mineral-based transmission fluids, including 80W-90 plus Big Twins Primary fluid and a Sportsters fluid for use in 1971 and newer Sportster models.

Additional Products The new Drag Specialties line for V-Twins also includes fuel stabilizer, brake fluid and fork oil. The 12-ounce bottle of fuel stabilizer contains powerful antioxidants to prevent fuel breakdown, system gum and varnish formation. Able to keep fuel stable for up to two years, the stabilizer contains corrosion inhibitors to help protect the fuel system components, as well. One notable feature is what cannot be found in the bottle – Drag Specialties does not put any alcohol in its fuel stabilizer.

DOT 4 Mineral brake fluid

The Drag Specialties DOT 4 Mineral brake fluid is a universal brake and clutch fluid for all systems that require a DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid. The DOT 5 Silicone brake fluid has a higher dry boiling point than the mineral versions. Both brake fluid options come in a 12-ounce bottle. Finally, Drag Specialties Mineral Fork Oil in 10W and 20W formulations complete the new V-Twin lubricants lineup. Specifically formulated for consistent, smooth damping action, these fork oils can be confidently used in all weather conditions. The oil protects the fork internals from wear and corrosion, too. The fork oil comes in onequart bottles. ■

Drag Specialties also has a low-profile touring seat with forward positioning. With this version, the rider sits one inch further forward than the standard Drag low-profile touring seat. Both versions of the low-profile touring seat come in multiple stitching styles and thread color options.

Drag has expanded the applications for the Predator III seat to include new Indian fitments. The 6-inch tall driver support and narrow front add comfort, while the various finishes available for the automotive-grade vinyl cover add style options. In addition, Drag now offers Predator III forward positioning seats. The seat moves the rider 1 inch forward and half an inch lower compared to the factory seat, and the seat geometry is two inches further forward than the standard Predator III.

rag Specialties Seats now has more styles and applications available for Indian models, helping customers get the exact looks, features and finish they want.

The four all-new seat styles and three expanded seat styles share a number of features. They all begin with a 3/16-inch ABS thermoformed seat base, which provides a perfect fit on the bike. The carpeted bottom and rubber bumpers help absorb vibrations and protect the bike’s paint. Molded polyurethane foam is sculpted to provide excellent comfort and styling. Like all Drag Specialties Seats, these new Indian options are all made at the Drag Specialties Seat facility in the USA. The new low-profile touring seat is made from Drag’s unique solar-reflective leather in the seating area and high-quality automotive-grade vinyl on the sides. The solar-reflective leather reduces the surface temperature by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit, keeping riders cool while also extending the seat’s life compared to standard materials.

The new Drag Specialties solo seats for Indians offer a huge style update as well as an adjusted rider position. The seat moves the rider 1 inch back and half an inch lower than the stock seat, and a 3-inch tall back support adds comfort without interrupting the low-slung lines of the seat. A narrow front adds to the sleek look. Drag Specialties has added 2018-2021 Scout Bobbers to the applications list for the bobber-style front solo seats. Giving off a vintage vibe, but made for modern comfort, the solo seat features Drag’s solar reflective leather in the seating area. Drag’s ¾ solo seat is another option for the latest Scout Bobbers. The café-style look has deep back support and an extra inch of height compared to the stock seat. The rider is also moved about 1 ½ inches back. Solar reflective leather keeps things cool. ■

Redesigned Highway Bars and Case Guards

F

reeway bars and case guards are those often un-noticed and unheralded, but highly functional accessories for motorcycles of all kinds. On Baggers and cruisers, they can sort of disappear, as many riders almost take it for granted that they are on the bike.

That’s why Cobra already offers a full line up covering Harley-Davidsons from Sportsters to Baggers, and even Indian Scouts, and is now expanding its line up to bring attention to these essential products. Beyond providing a revised styling element to the classic V-Twin profile, these new bars provide a host of other benefits. From the front, the bar takes on an updated look compared with the more traditional hoop shaped offerings. It’s a cleaner, more modern take on the freeway bar.

At low speeds for example, they can offer a degree of protection for the shiny parts of the motorcycle in the event of a classic parking lot tip over. And, they also can offer a mounting location for riders looking to add supplemental lighting or even foot pegs. Cobra built these two new bars to offer riders more choices for Bagger models. The company has previously made the traditional hoop-style bar for Baggers. Now with more riders, especially riders of Street Glides and Road Glides, moving more toward to the performance end of riding, its necessary to update some of the more conventional products in order to reflect that more aggressive riding style. The first new bar arrives with an aggressive v-bend shape as opposed to the more old-style round hoop version. The tighter bottom tuck of the bar gives it its distinctive shape, and offers more ground clearance, while still leaving plenty of room for a rider’s feet. The Cobra case guard takes that V-Bend style to a new minimal level, and reduces the profile even more. Cobra has been making high-quality case guards for 15 years, but this one is the first for a V-Twin powered touring bike. The same thinking applies – take a minimalist approach, but leave enough room for Bigfoot-sized feet around the foot controls, and look good while doing it.

The top bend on the bar is similar in width to the hoop style bar, but the bottom tapers far more inward giving this bar its distinct shape and appearance.

This final product certainly checks all the boxes on the design brief. The height of the bar sits just above the top of the rear brake pedal, with the width of it a bit outboard of the floorboards. A gentle curve arcs the case guard back to join the frame at the front floorboard mounting locations. This elegant design works for those riders looking for many of the benefits of a highway bar, but avoiding the more traditional offerings. Both bars use 1¼-inch mandrel bent steel tubes, and each is available in a lustrous chrome or shiny black powder coated finish. All your customers need for an easy installation comes in one box. t has been a busy decade for Custom Dynamics. Since the company’s products first appeared in the FatBook 10 years ago, Custom Dynamics has experienced enormous growth. While that is good news for the company, it is also good news for dealers and customers. There is a bigger selection than ever before, with new products constantly being added to the list. Today, Custom Dynamics offers more than 1,000 SKUs, all available through Drag Specialties. There are exclusive display programs available to give dealers an added sales advantage, and Custom Dynamics has three representatives who are dedicated to working with Drag reps and dealers throughout the year. Two of the most recent products to join that long list of SKUs are micro LED turn signals and a taillight baseplate for pre-1999 Harley-Davidson models.

The dual-color micro LED turn signals are available in a front white/amber combination that acts as a bright white running light with an amber turn signal and a rear red/amber combination that can be used as a bright red brake light and amber turn signal. The micro LED turn signals can be placed in just the right spot with the Custom Dynamics micro turn signal mounting brackets that are sold separately. Straight and L-shaped brackets are available, and the finish choice of black or silver ensures that the brackets will coordinate perfectly with the turn signal housings. Custom Dynamics designed the taillight baseplate for pre-1999 Harley models to be an easy swap with the factory baseplate. By making the swap, Custom Dynamics and ProBEAM LED taillights can be easily and securely mounted. The included wiring harness connects to the factory taillight wiring, making it a true plug-and-play operation. Updates for the Oldies New Parts for Vintage Harleys

When it comes time to update an older Harley-Davidson, check out the OldBook for a great selection of belt-drive primaries and performance clutches from BDL.

W

hen the goal isn’t a 100-point restoration there’s no law saying vintage bikes must stay married to their antiquated technologies. Just because a Harley-Davidson has some years on it doesn’t mean it can’t get a new lease on life. With that in mind, when the clutch and primary drive becomes the focus of attention for any classic-year Big Twin, BDL has plenty available to breathe new life into that bike. Depending on the level of upgrade desired, the company offers performance clutch packages, full belt-drive primary systems and high-performance lockup-clutches. All easily installed, all genuine BDL, all designed to help an old Harley kick up its heels one more time. For a simple clutch upgrade BDL’s competitor kit, CC-100-S can quickly turn a 1936 through early-1984 clutch hub and basket into a newer one-piece design. Eliminating the floating basket syndrome that so easily throws a Knucklehead, Pan or Shovelhead clutch out of whack, the kit is an easy press-fit into an OE basket (or a BDL early-style replacement). And, with a robust double-row hub bearing for strength, along with race-proven aramid fiber clutch plates and an assortment of coil springs for custom-tuning, the result is smoother operation, positive adjustments and a clutch much stronger than OE. Taking the upgrade all the way there are BDL belt-drive primaries for the older Harleys, too. For starters there are 8mm belt drive kits for all 1936 through 1964 Big Twin kickstart bikes. The kits come with a belt, the clutch

basket, a front pulley and the nut and washer. The front pulleys and clutch baskets are hard-anodized aluminum, the pulleys drilled and tapped for easy removal. Inner clutch hubs and plates are available separately. BDL also has 3-inch shorty belt drive kits for the 1970 through 1978 electric-start bikes. Offered with or without a late-style starter motor, the kits include a 141-tooth drive belt, the motor plate, clutch hub, starter pinion-gear assembly, a complete set of clutch plates, one of BDL’s patented ball bearing pressure plates, and all the installation hardware. There are also 2-inch wide open belt systems for the 1990 through 1998 FLHT/FLHR/FLTR applications. Offered in chrome, polished or a black anodized finish, the kits come complete with a performance clutch and that patented ball-bearing pressure plate. The kits work with floorboards and include shaft cones for both OEM heel/ toe shifters and toe shifters. Don’t forget, BDL’s upgrade kits for those ball-bearing lockup clutches will work here, too. That upgrade comes with a heavy-duty diaphragm spring and a matched set of harder, heavier carbide ball bearings for faster action and increased pressure. Old bikes are fun. They’re a lot more fun when they actually work well. A Belt Drives Limited (BDL) clutch/ primary upgrade is a big step in that direction. ■

For the inaugural event in Utah, the Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League launches with four separate classes, each one catering to a very specific type of V-Twin rider. The Stunt GP is a unique invitational class where competitors will compete Friday night in a judged stunt competition, then

take the same bike to the track Saturday for qualifying and to the main event on Sunday. The Premier Class Bagger GP is where riders on Harley-Davidson and Indian Touring bikes will duke it out for the big win. Buydos and a host of vendors launched the new league at a V-Twin-only track day in early February at Chuckwalla Raceway in the Southern California desert. The event

SLYFOX

Eyes on the Prize SLYFOX TEES UP THE BAGGER RACING LEAGUE

A

lex Fox is on a mission. First order of business is to keep the momentum going for his up-and-coming company, Slyfox, as it grows in popularity among the growing Performance Bagger market. In fact, the products bearing the Slyfox name and logo in the FatBook now include carbon fiber body parts, a signature Saddlemen seat, lightweight triple clamps and a custom triple tree to name a few. The 31-year-old Fox also happens to be a diehard race fan who built and sponsored an entry for last year’s King of the Bagger race that debuted at Weathertech Laguna Seca Raceway. His bike, a modified 2017 Road Glide ridden by Cory West, qualified and finished fifth among the 12-bike field. This year’s mission statement for Slyfox Racing reads, in so many words – Improve on that finish. Fox’s third goal? As mentioned, he’s a steadfast race fan, one who’s eager to help promote Bagger and V-Twin racing in America. And so, Fox is doing what he can to help promote the new Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League that’s scheduled a multi-class Bagger and V-Twin premier event at Utah Motorsports Campus near Salt Lake City, Utah, this June. “The BRL is formatted more for the entire V-Twin market,” Fox explains. “With several classes now, there’s something for everyone who owns a Harley-Davidson or Indian motorcycle, be it a Bagger for the Bagger GP class (the event’s premier class) or other model (such as Dyna Softail or Sportster variations) for any of the support classes.” “We learned a lot about our bike during last year’s race,” Fox adds. “We were scraping the primary on the left side and the exhaust pipe on the right side through turns. We’ve worked to fix those things for the upcoming BRL race.” Additional, and perhaps more subtle, changes were also performed on the bike during this past winter. For instance, Fox points out, “We also have a new billet rear subframe, and we modified the handlebars and moved the foot controls to a more rear-set position, and we raised the seat slightly for a more sport bike seating position for the rider.” After completing those upgrades, he joined other members of the fledging Bagger Racing League for an open-track test day at Chuckwalla Raceway near Palm Springs, California, to shake out the bike. The test session also served as an ideal time to announce and promote the new Bagger Racing League to the media. “We had quite a turnout of bikes, not only for the Bagger GP group but for the other classes as well,” says Fox. All that remains now is to line them up on the Utah grid to see who’s fastest. And nobody’s discounting the Slyfox entry’s chances of winning, either. Folks, it’s time to race. ■

Faster Engineering SADDLEMEN’S PERFORMANCE BAGGER

O

ne look at Saddlemen’s entry in the 2020 Drag Specialties King of the Bagger event and it’s immediately apparent that this isn’t your standard 2019 Harley-Davidson Road Glide. In fact, it looks to be the very definition of Performance Bagger, the moniker that now defines a thriving segment of the V-Twin market. Highly customized and engineered by the team at Saddlemen and racer and bike builder Michael Woolaway, the Road Glide is built around Feuling Parts’ front-line 126-cubic-inch performance package. In short, it simply looks fast sitting still. With the 2020 debut showing at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca now in the rearview mirror, the Saddlemen crew is not adjusting its focus on the newly formed Bagger Racing League as the next opportunity to demonstrate the bike’s true capability. The League’s launch is scheduled for June 2021 at Utah Motorsports Campus near Salt Lake City, Utah. Saddlemen is confident its team will become even more competitive as it spends time on the bike, adding that it is looking forward to a strong finish in June.

A close-up inspection of the bike justifies Saddlemen’s optimism – the bike’s design is immaculate in execution, its workmanship by team Saddlemen is impeccable. Every nut and bolt (most of which are of lightweight titanium) is expertly integrated into the package, and every part has a purpose. Ultimately shedding 300 pounds from the bike’s standard 850 pound dry weight is quite impressive. For instance, the Kraus Moto KTR inverted front end sporting Öhlins Road and Track fork legs has one purpose – to hug the pavement at speed. It’s coupled with Öhlins rear shocks to position the bike in its race-ready stance. And Alloy Art’s beautiful lightweight swing arm can easily pass as a piece of art in and of itself, matching the custom fabricated featherweight chrome-moly rear subframe to tidy up the rear section. Front and rear performance brake setups match up nicely with the lightweight 17-inch wheels. An Alloy Art Universal Cush Drive is integrated into the drivetrain, and as with all Bagger entries, Dunlop’s DOT-approved race-spec tires are mounted front and rear.

Saddlemen went deep with this hopped-up Bagger build. From nose to tail, the Road Glide was upgraded with a singular focus: Highperformance handling and power.

As noted, the Milwaukee-Eight engine’s power is boosted using Feuling Parts’ speed equipment, including 126-inch pistons that fill S&S Cycle cylinders. HP+ Performance push rods, an Endurance Beehive Valve Spring Kit with titanium retainers, and a Feuling Race Series oiling system also compose the heart of the power package. The cylinder heads were expertly flowed by Branch & O’keefe, with an HPI throttle body serving as intake; the custom-made titanium exhaust finishes things off outback. Saddlemen. For instance, the front fairing weighs a mere 3 pounds, and each of the saddlebags (note their beveled bottoms for optimum cornering clearance) weigh slightly more than 3 pounds each (including lids and mounts). In a nod toward the sportsmanship among the competitors in the nascent Performance Bagger racing scene, Saddlemen’s CEO, Dave Echert, made extra sets of the lightweight carbon fiber body work, as well as custom Saddlemen seats to share with all the teams participating in the Bagger racing series. Saddlemen wrapped its Bagger build around a Feuling Parts' front-line This gesture wasn’t about 126-inch performance package. And, clearly, the sportsmanship factor remains a major part of Bagger competition that, with the spectacular side-by-side racing displayed at Laguna Seca last year, explains why the new Bagger Racing League will be a must see event in 2021. The racing was clean, professional, and perhaps most of all, exciting. That June race can’t happen any sooner! ■

Performance Air Intake Kits

W

hen Vance & Hines introduced the VO2 air intake system at Sturgis about 15 years ago, Harley-Davidson owners quickly recognized the advantages that this bolt-on, easyinstall system offered their engines. The payoff was more efficient air intake for the engine, which typically spells more power. Especially for big-displacement, deepbreathing V-Twin engines.

VO2 Cage Fighter

Buoyed by that early success, Vance & Hines has, over the years, expanded the VO2 line to include additional variations, with all the models priced competitively. That’s good news for Harley owners and Drag Specialties dealers alike because today there’s a VO2 system to fit practically every budget and every styling application. Currently, Vance & Hines offers five VO2 models, each with its own dedicated mounting bracket to fit Twin Cam, Sportster and Milwaukee-Eight models from 1999 through 2021. The five VO2 models include, in order of pricing, the Naked, Cage Fighter, and the X, Blade or Rogue. All models use similar washable filter elements that were developed and dyno tested by experts in the industry familiar with maximizing a motorcycle engine’s air intake capabilities. As with all Vance & Hines products, the VO2 is made at the company’s facilities in Santa Fe Springs, California.

Naked All VO2 mounting brackets are made of strong, made-inthe-USA steel. The Naked, especially, has an easy-to-install black bracket that comes with Allen-head hardware and mounting instructions for DIY applications or for quick turnaround by your shop’s service department. Provisions also allow for the filter element to fit directly beneath the OEM air filter cover, should a bike owner choose to do so.

X When it comes to eye-catching styling, Harley owners have three more VO2 models to select from – the X, the Blade and the Rogue. Perhaps the most flamboyant in terms of styling is the X. As its name suggests, the billet cover features a prominent “X” in its design pattern. Installation is easy, and the kit comes with ARP bolts mounting hardware. VO2 X

Cage Fighter The Cage Fighter, the newest addition to the VO2 line, features a stainless steel wrap-around bracket that’s available with a brushed or black finish, and comes with mounting hardware. This is the system that was used by the Vance & Hines entry at last year’s Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race where it finished a close second. It offers great styling, with minimal weight and maximum breathing capabilities, and will no doubt be a favorite among performance Bagger owners this year, too. VANCE & HINES

Vance & Hines’ range of VO2 air intake systems is now available in a box that’s easy to merchandize, and is labeled with a few messages that reference the company’s longtime go-fast history.

VO2 Blade

Finishes include chrome, black or Black Contrast, making this a favorite among Harley owners looking for some added flash to their bike’s styling cues.

Blade Like the X, the Vance & Hines VO2 Blade is available in three finishes – chrome, black or Black Contrast. Its design pattern is slightly more subdued, using a single center piece that vertically bisects the entire center section for a symmetrical balanced look. ARP mounting hardware is included for a quick and easy installation. VO2 Rogue

Rogue Chrome or black finishes highlight the Rogue, and its single-radius arm helps give it a custom, yet lightweight appearance. As with all VO2 systems, the Rogue has been dyno tested for maximum performance, and it comes with ARP mounting hardware for quick and easy installation. No doubt, the VO2 air intake line helps create a uniform package for any Vance & Hines-equipped late-model Harley-Davidson. Although each air cleaner kit adapts well to stock engine configurations, maximum performance gains are achieved when used with a fuel tuner, free-flow exhaust system and a remap. ■

TIRES

Scaling Up

More Features and Sizes for an Iconic Tire

Avon Tyres’ Cobra Chrome range is an evolution of the popular Cobra line of tires. The upgrades include improved tire feedback and feel, as well as enhanced wet grip and improved wet braking. They’re also designed to outlast the previous Cobra tire by 10 percent.

M

ost cobras shed their skin. The Avon Tyres Cobra evolved instead, morphing into the high-tech Cobra Chrome. With 67 different sizes available, the Cobra Chrome tire is compatible with a huge array of cruisers, touring bikes, customs and even trikes. Of those 67 sizes, 14 of them have a wide whitewall, giving more riders than ever the chance to make a style statement. While the Cobra tire was a longtime, legendary tire choice for V-twins, Avon Tyres wanted to give riders a high-performance version that had all of the style combined with more confidence-inspiring technology. The result is the Cobra Chrome. In all, the Cobra Chrome tire has increased stability, better handling and improved longevity compared to its predecessor. One of the hallmarks of the Avon Tyres Cobra tire is the snakeskin design on the sidewalls. That same feature is on the Cobra Chrome, and it is a perfect complement to the Cobra logo and the unique tread design. The whitewall fitments add even more of a bold statement to any bike. The advanced tread and carcass designs result in improved maneuverability at all speeds as well as precise feel and tire feedback. Avon Tyres used its Enhanced Stability System (ES) to reduce tire flex, which improves both grip and stability. The Cobra Chrome tire is efficient in wet weather, too, with improved wet braking distances thanks in part to the enhanced compounds used in the tire’s construction. While the tread pattern might have a minimalist look, Avon’s Enhanced Aqua Flow (EAF) design gives it optimal water dispersal while still providing an ample contact

patch. The Cobra Chrome actually has a 5 percent larger footprint than the Avon Cobra, further increasing the tire’s grip and wear resistance. Another aspect where the Cobra Chrome really shows its prowess is longevity. In testing, the Avon Cobra Chrome outlasted the Cobra tire by 10 percent. Avon Tyres achieved this with several new features. In addition to using highly durable compounds, Avon applied its Advanced Variable Belt Density (A-VBD) technology to the rear tires. By using a densely wrapped belt in the center of the rear tire and a less dense belt on the shoulders, the Cobra Chrome rear provides a large contact patch that provides stability as well as longer wear. Additionally, Force Following Grooves (FFG) increase the wear resistance of the Cobra Chrome tires while also reducing tire noise and improving stability. Avon Tyres is encouraging riders to purchase the Cobra Chrome tire with a consumer reward program that will run through October 31, 2021. Customers will receive a prepaid card worth $20 with the purchase of one tire, or $60 for a full set. ■

hen it comes to custom grips your customers have a lot of options with Performance Machine. The company’s wide range of grips are a great upgrade for worn-out rubber and the ultimate finishing touch for any new handlebar setup, but of all of Performance Machine’s options none combine function, style and comfort quite like the Vision Series Contour Grips. The Vision Series Contour Grips feature the same detailed, high-quality construction as all of Performance Machine’s grips, which means compliant and replaceable Renthal rubber and intricately machined billet-aluminum collars in anodized black or chrome. With the Vision Series Contour Grips, however, Performance Machine has integrated ultra-bright LED turn indicators into a clear disc at the end of the grips, providing omnidirectional visibility in a sleek, minimalist design. As with the other components in Performance Machine’s Vision Series lineup, these grips utilize crystal-clear polycarbonate windows that, when the turn signal is off, blend seamlessly into the controls. Tap the turn signal button and embedded yellow LEDs set the polycarbonate pucks aglow, providing increased visibility for oncoming traffic. With their 360-degree illumination, the Vision Series Contour Grips are uniquely eye catching, which is good for both style points and visibility out on the road. Additionally, these grips offer the opportunity to streamline your customer’s bikes by eliminating the unsightly front turn signals and associated wiring. As advanced as they are, the Vision Series Contour Grips are easy enough for your techs to mount or for your customers to install at home. Designed for the 1-inch bars found on Harley-Davidsons and other V-Twins, the grips slide onto the handlebar with a close tolerance and are secured via set screws with the included hex wrench, so no messy glues are required. Wiring feeds through the end of the handlebar and down to the main harness, keeping the bars and cockpit clean and tidy. The Vision Series Contour Grips are compatible with both standard wiring and CAN/BUS systems, and are offered in a dual-cable throttle setup for older machines as well as a throttle-by-wire setup for modern bikes. Performance Machine’s Vision Series Contour Grips are available in black anodized as well as chrome finishes, and are in stock and ready to ship. ■

Return the Roar GNX Slip-On Exhausts

S&S Cycle designed and developed the GNX slip-ons to provide a nice boost in exhaust tone and performance for those Milwaukee-Eight powered Baggers.

H

arley-Davidson’s MilwaukeeEight engine is a powerhouse, but a low idle combined with a plugged-up factory exhaust conspire to mute the aggressive exhaust note this machine was destined to sing.

Available in chrome or Guardian Black, the GNX slip-ons feature a race-inspired tip.

Not to worry, the go-fast team over at S&S launched its GNX slip-ons with one thing in mind, and that’s setting the M8 free to sound and perform like a proper American made V-twin should. “We designed the GNX specifically for the M8 powered touring machines, with performance, sound and price point as our top priority” says VP of Marketing David Zemla. Combining a 4½-inch shell with a tuned baffle and a race-inspired tip, S&S Cycle’s GNX slip-ons let the sound and power flow out of the M8 engine. For those customers looking for something a little more sedate, the GNX features a removable dB reducer that lets them tune the sound as well as back pressure of the exhaust to their liking.

The GNX is manufactured and chromed right here in the USA. It’s also available in the new Guardian Black finish for those looking for a little less bling and a dead match to the factory header. The slip-ons have also been notched out for clearance of shocks up to 13½ inches tall. Not only can your customers get an exhaust that increases the power and sound of their Milwaukee-Eight bikes, they get all that at a price that’s very wallet friendly. The GNX in Guardian Black retails for $474.95 per pair, $589.95 in gleaming chrome. ■

W

hen stock parts won’t cut it, THRASHIN Supply has the American-made components your customers’ need to modify their HarleyDavidsons just the way they want. With THRASHIN’s wide range of footpegs and shifter tips for the Dyna, FXR, Softail and Sportster, riders can modify and refine the look, feel and function of their foot controls. Since most stock Harley foot controls are rubber clad they can feel mushy under boot soles, and their extra-large size eats up cornering clearance. That’s where THRASHIN’s P-54, P-54 Slim, Canyon, Burnout, and Militant footpegs come in. All models are milled from billet 6061 aircraftgrade aluminum for firm and precise feel, and they feature angled undersides that add cornering clearance for hardcharging riders. All THRASHIN footpegs have adjustable clevises to fine-tune the angle, and each model is now offered in silver, black, blue, red, and gold anodizing.

Inspired by the clean lines and smooth transitions of the canyon roads near THRASHIN’s Southern California headquarters, the Canyon footpegs are steeply beveled for maximum cornering clearance while the ribbed surface offers adequate traction and a classic appearance. For a little more boot traction and slightly more aggressive look, THRASHIN’s Burnout pegs are a good fit. Measuring about 3½ inches long, and tapering subtly from 1½ inches to 1 inch, the Canyons and Burnouts feature a pronounced THRASHIN logo along the top for added style.

Militant pegs

The Militant pegs were named for their combative and aggressive design, and feature a broad, long platform with three rows of traction teeth for solid footing. While the Militants provide loads of boot support, extensive machining gives these footpegs a minimalist look.

P-54 pegs

The P-54s are a THRASHIN classic, with a simple style that looks good on any Harley. Measuring in at 3½ inches long and tapering from 2¼ inches to 1½ inches, the P-54’s feature deep relief cuts on the sides and intricate machining on the top surface that creates a pattern of pyramids for excellent boot traction and a cool look. They also come with premium ARP stainless steel hardware that’s a definite upgrade over stock. For an even more minimalist peg, THRASHIN offers the P-54 Slims, which feature the same style but in a narrower design that tapers from about 1½ P-54 Slims inches to 1 inch.

The TSC comes in a Shorty model that’s perfect for the rear shifter on Baggers, and both versions come with premium ARP hardware. As with the footpegs, the TSCs are offered in gold, blue, red, black, and silver. T

o keep a Harley-Davidson looking good and running strong, your customers and techs need the right supplies. Maxima’s sole focus is chemicals like high-quality lubricants and cleaning formulas. With the company’s V-Twin Oil Change Kits, V-Twin Fork Oil, and Matte Finish Cleaner, your customers will have what they need to handle routine maintenance and keep special finishes like Harley’s Denim paint looking great. The oil change is the foundation of the maintenance schedule, and Maxima’s V-Twin Oil Change Kits for Harleys make the process as simple as possible. They come in two forms – the Quick Change and the Full Change – with applications dating back to the early ’80s. With the Quick Change kit, riders get the appropriate amount of Maxima’s V-Twin Full Syn 20W-50 or V-Twin

The Full Change kit takes things a step further by including not only the transmission oil and filter, but also primary oil to put fresh fluid in both sumps. Whichever kit your customers choose, they can rest assured knowing that the lube exceeds OEM specifications and are specially engineered for V-Twin engines. That means Maxima’s V-Twin oils are extremely shear-stable, and cling to metal surfaces for superior protection under the extreme heat and loads that air-cooled engines experience. These oils are also highly oxidatively stable to attain the extended change intervals required for many Harley engines. A bike’s fork oil needs to be refreshed regularly as well and Maxima’s V-Twin Fork Oil is available in both 10W and 20W for Harley applications. Fork oil lubricates the fork legs and the bushings they slide in, keeps the seals conditioned and pliable, and most importantly provides the damping that controls suspension motion on the road. Maxima’s V-Twin fork oil is a shear stable, high viscosity index formula engineered to maintain a strong film to help reduce wear on bushings and fork legs. The advanced, Lubricinol-fortified formula minimizes stiction and reduces running friction while minimizing foaming for consistent, long-lasting damping performance. As with Maxima’s V-Twin Oil Change Kits, the V-Twin Fork Oil isn’t just suitable for Harley-Davidson models, it’s optimised for them. Finally, there’s Maxima’s Matte Finish Cleaner for those hard-to-clean surfaces like Harley’s Denim paint and the matte finish popular on helmets. These finishes look great, but smudge easily and are hard to clean with conventional formulas, so Maxima developed a special cleaner. Matte Finish Cleaner features a special blend of surfactants and detergents that lift away solids without sticking to the surface, leaving the finish looking clean. ■

ichelin got its start in 1891as a bicycle tire manufacturer, and it was inevitable that the company would eventually expand to include motorcycle tires. The first Michelin motorcycle tire was introduced in 1897, as the company saw the potential of the emerging industry. Even though it was the first time that the general public had seen the word “motorcycle” associated with the Michelin name, those tires had been in development long before that as Michelin sought to create a product that was both capable and comfortable. Since then, Michelin has achieved a lot of other milestones, many of them relating to the continued development

of motorcycle tires. Ever since that first motorcycle tire debuted more than a century ago, Michelin’s engineers have continued to embrace new innovations to help riders feel confident in all riding conditions. The company’s flagship tire for V-Twins, the Michelin® Commander® tire series, is just the latest in a long line of innovation. The Michelin Commander tire line was first developed more than 20 years ago, and Michelin continues to introduce new design features and technology to that line. Most recently, the Michelin Commander III Cruiser and Touring tires were launched to give riders the exact performance and handling characteristics they demand. Style is a big part of the equation, too. The Michelin Commander III tire range offers performance without compromise. The exceptional wet grip and short stopping distances in the wet mean that all-weather riding is no problem. The extended tread life and larger contact patch increase longevity, so riders can go the distance with peace of mind. Michelin has achieved this wet-weather prowess thanks in part to combining a silica-infused tread rubber with deep

Mercury Rising

Black Chrome for the Softail Road Rage

Bassani now offers its Milwaukee-Eight Softail Road Rage 2-into-1 exhaust in the unique Mercury Style finish. Not only does that pipe offer up plenty of good looks thanks to that black chrome finish, it provides a nice boost in performance and sound.

B

assani calls it “Mercury Style.” It’s a unique darkchrome finish, first seen last year on some of Bassani’s True Duals for the Milwaukee-Eight baggers. An ultra-classy, and really different look, that special finish is now also available on many popular pipes in the Bassani lineup, including the short megaphone Road Rage 2-into-1s for the M8 Softails. Prototype versions of these Mercury Style pipes for the 2018 through 2021 Street Bobs, Lowriders, Fat Bobs and Slims made the rounds last summer and riders had just one question – When can we get our own? The answer is now. Mercury-finish M8 Softail Road Rage 2-into-1s are widely available and Drag Specialties has them, right along with the versions in chrome, black and TIG-welded stainless steel. Bassani’s Mercury Style dark chrome isn’t just one look. Unlike an ordinary chrome, or stainless finish, the dark chrome Mercury pipes take on different shades and appearances depending on the color of the bike on which they’re mounted, what’s reflecting into that finish, the time of day and what the overall lighting conditions are. All of those factors will have that Mercury Style Road Rage 2-into-1s shimmer and shine in a variety of ways. It’s subtle but definitely noticeable.

Underneath those shade-shifting good looks, of course, is a Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 exhaust with all the sound and fury that means. More than just eye-catching good looks, the pipes are pure performers. Equal-length stepped headers (a 1¾-inch tube opening up to 17/8-inch diameter tube) empty into a welded-on collector featuring an advanced design insert to maximize scavenging and performance. All this terminates into a short, aggressive reverse-cone megaphone muffler with a removable baffle and a billet end cap featuring a fluted detail. The design is clean and purposeful. As desirable as all this is, especially when finished off Mercury Style, the real payoff comes when the throttle is twisted. A Road Rage 2-into-1 literally pulls the exhaust out of the engine for maximized flow. The result is increased horsepower and buckets of torque. The performance is everywhere, from a big boost in the lowand mid-ranges to a free-flowing top-end. The looks and performance are paired with a pipe that’s lightweight and features increased ground clearance. ■

specifically for Harley models. They are more durable than the stock brake pads, and a high-tech ceramic heat shield keeps heat away from the caliper piston and brake fluid. Additionally, Drag offers sintered metal, semi-metallic and organic DuPont Kevlar brake pads. The organic pads are the ideal choice for polished or chrome rotors. To go with the pads, Drag also has brake lines, calipers and both DOT-4 and DOT-5 silicone brake fluid. Giving the engine a spring tune-up will require items like oil and filters. Options include Drag Specialties traditional spin-on oil filters in black or chrome and magnetic ring oil filters that capture small particles of loose metal. Of course, Drag has a complete new lubricant line-up for 2021 to go with those filters. Clear fuel filters, OEM-style air filter elements and premium reusable air filters are additional must-haves for an engine refresh. xperienced shops and home techs stock their toolboxes well beyond the basics. Specialty tools may not get used often, but when a tricky task pops up they can make all the difference. Motion Pro’s Gasket Scraper, Hose Removal Tool and Pro Plug Sockets are exactly the kind of helpful tools to make your customer or tech’s tasks easier.

Motion Pro’s Hose Removal Tool and Pro Plug socket range are must-have tools for your professional techs and DIY customers. Both make maintenance and service that much easier to perform.

Motion Pro’s Gasket Scraper replaces the age-old razor blade with a brass blade that safely removes gaskets from aluminum cases, making it ideal for engine rebuilds and clutch replacements. With its ergonomic billet-aluminum handle the tool is easy to hold, and it comes with a spare steel blade for stubborn gaskets as well as a storage tube that keeps the sharp tool out of harm’s way.

Gaskets aren’t the only thing that can be hard to remove. Oil hoses can be a pain as well. That’s where the Hose Removal Tool comes in. It combines a pointed rightDrag Specialties 2021 HalfthePage Template angle tip for breaking seal on stuck hoses, and a wide leed: 8.625 hooked x 5.5˝ end to assist in pulling the hose off the fitting. rim: 8.375 x 5.25˝ afety: 7.875 x 4.75˝

Spark plugs are crucial engine components, and they’re harder to get to on some engines than others. That’s where Motion Pro’s Pro Plug Socket comes in. It has a thinwall design that helps it slip into deep-well engine heads with less maneuvering, and it abandons the old rubbergrommet retention strategy in favor of a mechanical retention system that won’t wear or harden with age and is unaffected by oil. ■

SPARK PLUG WIRES

Smooth-Running Spark Low-Resistance Plug Wires

over, you’ll have to continue applying more pressure to get similar results, and eventually it will be tough to get a clean shave at all. From the inside-out, ACCEL spiral core plug wires are constructed of a fiberglass and Kevlar stranded inner core surrounded by carbon graphite semi-reactive element, and wrapped in heavy-gauge stainless steel conductor with a conductive coating. All of this is protected by a triplelayer of high heat resistant, high-durometer silicone, fiberglass braid and 8mm silicone outer layer rated for temperatures up to 550°F. This combination of materials promotes durable conductivity and wear-resistant strength.

ACCEL’s upgraded spark plug wires are a vast improvement over a Harley-Davidson’s OEM wire setup. The low-resistance wires help fire up a stronger spark, and are built for long-lasting function.

W

hen it comes to the three fundamentals of a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine – air, fuel and spark – many riders focus on modifying air flow and fuel delivery, but often leave spark as an afterthought.

In back-to-back electrical resistance testing with ACCEL wires versus OEM-style carbon core wire, ACCEL wires consistently measured approximately 500 Ohms/ft., whereas the carbon core wires started out at roughly 2500-5000 Ohms/ft. and continued to increase as testing wore on.

From the factory, Harley-Davidson models have been standard equipped with carbon core spark plug wires for generations, and still are to this day. These OEM wires are simply constructed of carbon crushed into cord surrounded by insulation. Carbon core wire is not only easily affected by heat and vibration, but its conductive ability diminishes over time. In fact, the Harley owner’s manuals include a reference chart to help owners know when wires are past their service life.

The 500 Ohm operation mark is not a coincidence. Holley engineers tested five different resistance levels before settling on this as the right balance for V-Twin ignition systems. Too low and the ECU could experience incorrect readings and retard timing, and too high can overheat the coils.

The development team at Holley has recognized the shortcomings of these OEM wires and set out to reconcile them with their spark plug wire offerings from the ACCEL motorcycle line of products. ACCEL plug wires for Harley models were developed through many hours of testing by Holley’s engineers and R&D staff. During this testing, resistance in OEM wires was found to roughly double after just 10,000 miles of riding. Simply put, high resistance is bad for conductivity, because when resistance goes up, the amount of energy required to fire the spark plug also goes up. With a steady increase in resistance, the coils continuously work harder to produce enough energy to fire the plug, producing damage-prone heat in the coil. Think of it like shaving with the same razor over and

GASKETS

Adding Inches

Gaskets for Big-Bore Builds

B

igger isn’t always better, unless we’re talking about Harley-Davidson cylinders! With Cometic’s new head gaskets, your customers can install a big bore on their Milwaukee-Eight engine without having to modify the oil passages, making the job quicker, easier and more affordable. Previously, expanding beyond a certain bore size (typically 4.200 inches on oil-cooled engines) meant that the cylinder bore encroached on the oil-passage holes in the head gasket. The fix was to have the oil hole in the head plugged or welded, and for some customers that specialized work made the job too pricey. With these newly redesigned M8 head gaskets, welding the oil hole up is no longer necessary until your customers reach a massive 4.320inch bore on oil-cooled models like the Softail and Street Glide. On the water-cooled Touring models, they can safely expand to a 4.500-inch bore without modification. That’s 143 cubic inches!

With Cometic’s new head gaskets, your customers can install a big bore on their Milwaukee-Eight Harley-Davidson engine without having to modify the oil passages, making the job quicker, easier and more affordable.

You might be wondering how Cometic pulled this off. The company’s engineers have been hard at work redesigning the M8 head gaskets, reshaping the passageways to keep the holes separate and safely encased in their own embossments. The result of these efforts is three different head gaskets for all of the popular big bore combinations. First, Cometic has a gasket that will fit both the oil- and water-cooled M8 engines with a 4.250-inch bore. This head gasket features separate embossing that captures the teardrop shaped single hole found on oil-cooled engines and the two round holes found on water-cooled models. Using separate embossments around each target area ensures the most robust sealing possible to avoid leaks and ensure long-term reliability. Next, Cometic has a no-modifications gasket for the popular 4.320-inch bore, which provides a full 132 cubic inches and is the largest you can go on the oil-cooled engines without the need for passageway modification. This head gasket features two separate embossments.

One is incorporated into the bore due to the proximity of the bore and the oil hole, and the other is a stand-alone embossment for the other coolant hole. Cometic also offers a no-mods gateway to 143 cubic inches via a 4.500-inch head gasket for water-cooled models. Again, this head gasket features stand-alone embossing for the coolant holes, oil drains and coolant holes, and no hole modifications are needed. Cometic’s Milwaukee 8 head gaskets are made to extremely high standards and feature a Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) design consisting of three layers of stainless steel. Stamped embossing gives the gasket resilience so it can lift with the head on the compression stroke. This is why an MLS head gasket will seal so well in a high cylinder pressure application like those found on big-bore Harley builds. ■

The Sound of Silence

A Simple Fix for Rocker Arm Tick Let your customers know that by installing a set of Rocker Lockers, they can eliminate that annoying rocker arm tick that’s common to so many Harley-Davidson models. They can also be installed without any complicated disassembly.

O

ne of the things that defines Harley-Davidsons is the way they sound. The noise coming from a Harley is typically a good thing, except when it comes to rocker arm tick, which is just annoying. Thankfully, eliminating that tick is as easy as installing a set of Rocker Lockers. The rocker arm tick has been around for years, usually kicking in when the motor starts up and the metals begin to heat and expand. The gap between the rocker arm shaft and the bolt that is supposed to lock it allows the shaft to rotate, which causes the tick. The tick can be especially bad on bikes with high mileage, and on bikes that have cam modifications or a worn rocker arm plate. Rocker Lockers not only eliminate the ticking noise, but they also center the rocker plate so that it is always located in the same position. That means there won’t be any uneven wear patterns on the rocker arm or valve, and there will be a better alignment with the pushrod and holes. The tapered design of each Rocker Locker allows them to self-lock, wedging the bolt and shaft in place to prevent any movement. While the initial goal of Rocker Lockers was to eliminate that annoying ticking sound, they eliminate a number of other problems, too. These include issues associated with the rocker plate being twisted during installation, the shaft hitting the bolt, the push rods rubbing the push rod tubes and the improper wear of the rocker arm feet.

66

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

APRIL 2021

Installing a set of Rocker Lockers doesn’t require any complicated disassembly. They can be installed while the rocker arm assembly is still on the bike, though it is recommended that the plate is removed since the assembly needs to be loose for installation. The included Teflon tool helps align the rocker arm shaft with the bolt hole, then the Rocker Lockers can be inserted. Getting Rocker Lockers just right took a lot of research, engineering and rider feedback. Various lengths, diameters and even construction materials were tested until the right combination was found. One of the challenges was that the inserts needed to be hard enough to keep their shape, yet soft enough for them to conform to the hole they are pressed into. They also needed to be completely encapsulated in the tower to ensure they couldn’t escape into the motor. Rocker Lockers offer a permanent solution to a problem that has persisted for years. Before the introduction of Rocker Lockers, one solution was to add a set screw to lock the rocker arm shaft, which could cause the tower to break. Another solution was to use a strong adhesive to keep the shaft in place, but that fix was only temporary. Finally, Rocker Lockers came along to silence the tick for good. ■

Power Up with Bigger Throttle Bodies

E

ngines are systems, which means every component plays a role in the motor’s performance, from the air filter all the way to the exhaust tip. As the gateway to the cylinder head, and the place where fuel and air get mixed, the throttle body is an especially important link in the chain. That’s where Horsepower Inc. comes in with its Big Bore and Max Flow throttle bodies, available for Harley’s 2001-2005 Twin Cam engines and most 2006-2016 Twin Cam models. Drag Specialties is carrying an expanded lineup of Horsepower Inc. components for 2021, and the throttle bodies are now offered in a wider range of sizes and finishes to suit all your customers’ custom-build needs.

Horsepower Inc. now offers its Big Bore and Max Flow throttle bodies in larger sizes and in both a raw aluminum and a black powder-coat finish. The throttle bodies are a quick way to add bolt-on power and performance.

THROTTLE BODIES

Speed Secrets

Horsepower Inc. has two models of throttle body available, both of which are a direct bolt-on design and offered in both raw aluminum or a black powder-coat finish. The Big Bore throttle bodies are offered in 51mm and 55mm bores (as measured at the throttle butterfly) in six different intake-runner sizes to match a huge variety of heads. The throttle bodies have a consistent bore size from the plate to the intake runner that helps optimize midrange performance. Big Bore throttle bodies are bench-tested and dyno-proven to increase airflow into the engine, and, just like with an athlete, bigger breaths equal more performance. To ensure the smoothest, fastest flow, Horsepower Inc. puts each casting up on a CNC machine to create a sculpted and smooth pathway for the intake charge. Beyond a larger bore and precision machining, the Big Bore throttle bodies are equipped with a sealed double-roller bearing for smooth throttle operation and a sturdy brass throttle blade that resists deflection for accurate response. Made in the USA, Big Bore throttle bodies completely replace the OEM throttle body and manifold and are fully compatible with stock injectors and throttle cables. For those looking to boost midrange performance as well as high-rpm power on big-inch builds, Horsepower Inc.’s Max Flow throttle bodies are the way to go. These designs feature a big 58mm bore as measured at the throttle plate, but extensive testing has resulted in an intake runner that gently expands to 62mm. This gradual taper balances midrange performance (where a smaller bore creates more intake velocity for better cylinder filling at lower rpm) with the larger size needed to stuff more air into the cylinders at higher rpm. As with the Big Bore throttle bodies, Max Flow setups are built in America with sealed bearings, brass throttle

plates and stainless steel springs for precision and durability. To suit your customers’ needs, these throttle bodies are also offered in a raw silver finish or an attractive black powder coat. ■

Nimble Fingers

Clutching Made Easier, Smoother

O

f all the products produced by Müller Motorcycles, the Power Clutch is its most popular. Developed by company founder Werner Müller in 2003, the Power Clutch significantly reduces the power needed to pull the clutch lever on Harley-Davidson Evo, Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight models. Large-displacement engines require a strong clutch, and oftentimes a strong clutch requires a strong hand. The Power Clutch is a small part that makes a big difference, especially on those really long days of riding or sitting in traffic, when the clutch hand can get especially tired. Müller Motorcycle says the Power Clutch reduces the effort required to engage the clutch lever by more than

forty percent. In 2018 and newer Harley models, the team at Müller has seen up to a 45 percent reduction. The Power Clutch replaces the OEM inner and outer ramp assemblies. It doesn’t require any drilling or spacers, and once it is installed, it is completely invisible to observers. In other words, riders can still ride with pride without giving away their clutching secret. Werner Müller designed the Power Clutch with a revised geometry of the ball pockets, and this patented product achieves two objectives – it makes using the clutch lever easier and it ensures that the clutch separates cleanly for a smooth ride.

Müller Motorcycles’ Power Clutch is a small, yet mighty, solution for significantly reducing the power needed to pull the clutch lever on Harley-Davidson Evo, Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight models.

Drag Specialties has four versions of the Power Clutch available, including one that fits right-side drive transmissions. Each Power Clutch is made at the Müller Motorcycle headquarters in Germany and comes with a lifetime warranty. ■

T

he word “adventure” can mean different things to different kinds of riders. When it comes to the TailWhip seat, LePera Motorcycle Seats has designed a versatile choice for Harley-Davidson riders who crave an adventurous, adrenaline-fueled style of riding. Like the KickFlip seat, the TailWhip gives riders a platform for their own creative style. Its name is inspired by the seat design, which features a whipped-up tail that adds style as well as support for both the rider and passenger. Of course, no one wants to show off all the time, which is why LePera designed the TailWhip to be as comfortable as it is edgy.

The TailWhip is now available for 2008 through 2021 Baggers, 2003 and newer XLs and 1996 through 2003 Dynas. Finish options include Basket Weave, Double Diamond and Pleated, all made with a durable BikerTec cover. Although the TailWhip is built for riders who like to push the limits of what a motorcycle can do, the construction methods and materials are based on LePera’s traditional craftsmanship, which has been a hallmark of the company for nearly 50 years. Each LePera seat begins with a steel base, which ensures a perfect, contoured fit on the motorcycle. The natural dampening characteristics and tough-but-beautiful powder coated surface are enhanced by a carpeted bottom. On top of the steel base plate, LePera’s specially-poured and formulated high-density Marathon molded foam gives the TailWhip its unique shape as well as comfort, so a rider feels good whether they are on the road or showing off. ■

Stylish, Comfortable Hand Grips

T

here’s a misconception among some HarleyDavidson enthusiasts that Avon Grips are imported from afar. Nothing could be further from the truth or, for that matter, from each hand grip’s place of origin. “All of our rubber hand grips are made right here in the USA,” boasts Dave Kelly, spokesman for Avon Grips. And specifically, “right here” means that all Avon Grips are manufactured in Kingwood, Texas, a suburb located just north of Houston. Actually, Avon Grips’ manufacturing facility consumes two buildings in Kingwood where 45,000 square feet are dedicated to designing, developing and manufacturing upwards of 1,000 sets of motorcycle hand grips each day. This output includes a variety of stylish and comfortable hand grips for all late-model Harleys. Avon Grips are unique, incorporating a special blend of soft, yet durable, Kraton Rubber that’s injection molded into specific models that comprise the product line. Most models use the Custom Contour Core Bar to form the

These air pockets help dampen vibration to the rider’s hands, minimizing what Avon Grips describes as “tingle” that causes fatigue during long rides. Through years of product development Avon Grips has developed a unique range of hand grips, often by working closely with Harley enthusiasts to create specific hand grips for Harley owners. Power Connection Race Series Lifters

When upgrading to a highperformance camshaft, point your customers to Feuling Parts’ lineup of performance lifters, a critical component that connect the cam lobes with the engine’s pushrods.

T

oday’s Performance Bagger market is here to stay, and a key component that Bagger owners seek for their engines is high-performance camshafts. Feuling Parts offers a wide range of performance-profile cams, especially for the Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight 114-inch and 117-inch engines that power many Baggers on the road today. Most Harley enthusiasts understand the benefits of a high-performance cam, but many of those same enthusiasts rarely consider the engine’s lifters, those cylindrically-shaped workhorses that unite the cam lobes with the engine’s pushrods. Feuling Parts offers a wide range of M-8 performance lifters, and perhaps the most popular among Harley Bagger owners are its Race Series Full Travel Lifters and Short Travel Lifters, which exceed the demands of heavier valve spring pressures associated with large-lift camshafts and performance valve springs. Both Race Series lifters (full and short) are designed to exceed the needs of largerlift cams and higher valve spring pressures by offering a slow bleed-down rate to maintain proper oil flow at all times to the engine’s top end. Short Travel Race Series lifters, in particular, are designed to help reduce the amount of oil that is required to fill the inside of the lifter, which reduces oil aeration inside the lifter on steep, fastaction high-lift cam lobes. For optimum top-end oil control, Feuling recommends including a high-performance pump such as Feuling Parts’ Race Series Oil Pump. ■

» There are many more advantages to replacing stock lifters for M-8, Twin Cam, Evo and XL models with Feuling’s Race Series lifters, and to learn more contact your Drag Specialties rep. All components are made in the USA and can be found in the 2021 FatBook.

Unique Style, Big Performance Exhausts for High-Output Milwaukee-Eight Engines

This feeling of freedom goes hand-in-hand with performance, which is why many Harley devotees, and even newly intrigued riders, had their curiosity piqued with the new Milwaukee-Eight engine platform. Available from Harley in up to 117 cubic inches, depending on the model, this next-gen Big Twin boasted an all-new design and all-new performance. However, this was just the beginning of the engineering and tuning possibilities for the crew at Trask Performance. With over two decades of experience building, developing and tuning hair-raising V-Twin engines, performance parts, turbo systems and even complete motorcycles, Trask eagerly went to work on the best methods to up the output of M8 engines. One of the latest results of Trask’s efforts are new ‘Big Sexy’ 2-to-1 stainless exhaust systems. These complete systems are designed to reward the efforts of your customers who have massaged their M8 powerplants to produce well into three-digit horsepower numbers. Recommended for use with 117-cubic-inch M8s making 140-plus horsepower, Big Sexy exhaust systems feature a three-step header design, increasing the diameter of the exhaust tubing twice between the cylinder head and the muffler. Combined with a highflow, 2-to-1 merge muffler design, exhaust flow is better optimized for increased power over stock systems. Trask constructs Big Sexy exhaust systems in the USA using high-quality stainless steel and mandrel bending techniques, which allows the tubing to retain its original shape and size throughout the bends. These systems are available in three different finishes to complement just about any look your customers are going for – raw stainless, polished and ceramic black. Regardless of the finish, each system is equipped with assault-style heat shields, providing a unique, custom look in addition to heat protection.

The new Big Sexy exhausts from Trask Performance are a great addition for customers with big-inch Milwaukee-Eight bikes that are making 140-plus horsepower. They come in raw stainless, polished and ceramic black.

D

ecades of evolution of Harley-Davidson motorcycles have brought endless improvement in performance and handling, along with a seemingly never-ending supply of custom work and modifications from passionate riders everywhere. Harley models and setups vary in a range of degrees from rider to rider, but one thing many of your customers can agree on is that the combined dosage of endorphins and adrenaline that twisting the throttle on their machines gives them is the motivation making them lifetime riders.

Big Sexy exhaust systems back up their custom look and performance with monster sound that creates instant attitude. The sound they produce is a seriously awesome rumble. Trask’s Big Sexy exhaust systems are designed to bolt up to 2017 through 2020 Harley-Davidson M8 FL Touring models with high-output engines for a complete package of unique style and impressive performance. ■
