Bagger Racing X 4 by D on Em de

T

his time last year we were excited about the first-ever running of the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race, scheduled then for mid-July at Laguna Seca. The Covid Gods messed up that original plan, but it did finally run there in late-October. The idea started out with people laughing about big roadworthy touring bikes on the track, but after the race was run, YouTube viewership went into uncharted waters. A new chapter had been added to the long-running story of the “Harley-Indian Wars.” Where there was one Bagger race in 2020, this year there will be four. MotoAmerica, the sanctioning body that ran the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race at Laguna Seca, has expanded the concept by adding two more races around the country and bringing on Mission Foods as title sponsor. Drag Specialties will continue to have a sponsorship role in the three-race Mission King of the Baggers Series and will also step up as title sponsor of the new Bagger Racing League’s kickoff event in June in Salt Lake City. This all-new event is a 100% v-twin with classes for Hooligans, Stunters, Big Twins and Baggers. Our cover story in this issue is about Vance & Hines, the legendary motorcycle performance company started in 1979 by the legendary drag racing rider-tuner duo of Terry Vance and Byron Hines. Through the years, the company has developed a three-prong approach to its product line with intake, exhaust and fuel mapping all working in concert. Be sure to read the story “Three Steps to Peak Performance” starting on page 20. Lastly, speaking of Bagger racing, something that Vance & Hines doesn’t have much experience with is finishing in second place. But that’s what happened last fall at Laguna Seca when S&S Indian rider Tyler O’Hara was able to take the checkered flag first just ahead of Vance & Hines’ race pilot Hayden Gillim in the exciting Drag Specialties King of the Baggers shootout. Second best is never okay at Vance & Hines, so you can be sure they will be stepping up with a bigger and better program in this year’s bagger races. ■

“Unlike the Bagger GP class, which is open for Expert-licensed riders only,” says BRL’s main man, Rob Buydos, “Pro Stock Bagger is a bagger class that permits Noviceclass riders who are licensed by certified racing organizations and racetracks to compete in their own race.” On that note some people might consider Pro Stock to be a feeder class to Bagger GP, but in truth, it also opens the door for some friendly regional rivalries among various American V-Twin indie shops and parts suppliers. This includes authorized HarleyDavidson and Indian dealers who wish to keep their racing expenses to a minimum. The Pro Stock rules are rather straightforward. Foremost, a bike entry must be powered by a pushrod V-Twin engine, and the frame cannot be modified. Also, riders cannot alter the steering geometry other than by swapping front fork, triple clamps and wheel sizes, although it’s permissible to change the rear swing arm and rear shock absorbers. Entries can also have upgraded brakes, foot controls, handlebars, seats and most body components, not to mention many engine performance parts, especially those originally created in the name of speed and reliability. While these new class rules exclude the Indian Challenger, that high-performance touring bike remains legal for entry in the Bagger GP class. “Perhaps the broadest description for Pro Stock Bagger is this,” explains Buydos, “If a part or component for a pushrod V-Twin-powered American bagger appears in Drag Specialties’ FatBook, then it’s that much easier to build your race bike. We want this class to encourage small shops and dealers to build and sponsor their own entries.”

If you’re beginning to sense that the BRL is serious about keeping the racing fun, competitive and exciting, you’re right. The Pro Stock class falls right in line with the Hooligan and Big Twin classes, allowing anybody with an American motorcycle powered by a pushrod V-Twin engine to compete. Rightly, the common denominator in maintaining competitiveness is the FatBook and OldBook connection. Drag Specialties has just about every over-the-counter performance part available for American V-Twins in its catalogs, so no Pro Stock or Big Twin racer should ever enjoy an unfair advantage. Every racer has access to the same parts. Which leads to another attractive feature about Pro Stock: There is no spec-tire for the class, meaning racers can select from any tire carried in Drag Specialties’ Tire & Service catalog. While the BRL racing schedule hasn’t been officially finalized, Buydos says that activities should get underway late Friday afternoon in a designated area where, for the next few hours, it carries the designation of the Stunt Show Arena. Then settle back as Stunt GP riders exhibit their talent for judging. Yep, judging – a panel of judges will determine which of the riders perform best, with winners to be announced later in the evening.

Judging continues the following day for the Arlen Ness Custom Bike Show, too. Custom bikes will be on display most of the afternoon, giving spectators a chance to check out the flashy iron in between all practice sessions on the racetrack. For the most part, though, Saturday constitutes practice and qualifying among all classes for Sunday’s string of main events that open with the first-ever Pro Stock Bagger race, followed by the Hooligan, and then Big Twin GP before heading into the banner event, the Bagger GP race. Following this highly anticipated showdown and its victory circle celebration by Bagger racers, the BRL will feature the first-ever Stunt GP race. For the first time ever on June 27, V-Twin Stunt riders will compete for honors in a race, not just a stunt show! No doubt the Bagger Racing League’s premier event will entrench Performance Bagger products as a viable part of the American V-Twin market. Consequently, as title sponsor for this historic race weekend, Drag Specialties is reminding dealers and V-Twin vendors to prepare for that old racing mantra, “What wins on Sunday sells on Monday.” ■

P

rogressive American Flat Track is proud to announce that S&S Cycle has further increased its involvement for 2021 and will serve as both the presenting sponsor for the premier dirt track class and as the Official Exhaust of Progressive AFT.

Reintroduced with much fanfare in 2020, the premier class of Progressive American Flat Track will be officially known as Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle in 2021. The announcement only solidifies S&S’s central role in the sport, having also recently played a vital part in the revolutionary rise of Indian Motorcycle and Royal Enfield inside the paddock. “Progressive American Flat Track welcomes S&S’s renewed commitment to the sport,” said Michael Lock, CEO of Progressive AFT. “They have become a key partner during recent years and both their commercial investment and their impact as a competitor and support resource in the race paddock has become an integral part of the show.” S&S Cycle has been developing high-performance products and winning championships for over six decades. In 2016 S&S added flat track to its arsenal with the development of the FTR750 and has since put it on the podium every event. Their efforts on the race track are channeled directly into their R&D program and ultimately to the street. S&S Cycle offers engine components, exhaust and fuel systems, engine upgrade kits, and complete engines for a variety of V-Twin makes and models as well as parts for the latest Royal Enfield machines. “S&S is excited to expand our support for Progressive AFT,” said David Zemla, VP of Marketing of S&S. “We enter the 2021 season as presenting sponsor of Mission SuperTwins and are backing it up with a $76,500 contingency program for the class. We will also continue to campaign the Indian Wrecking Crew in AFT’s premier class and are looking forward to getting back on the track and in front of the fans.” ■

ance & Hines announced a full slate of contingency sponsorship payouts for the 2021 American Flat Track racing season. The program includes payouts for the top five riders in each class for every event and a $5,000 bonus for each class champion. In total, the company is offering riders $73,650 in 2021.

“Our company was born on a racetrack, so we know how hard it can be to fund a racing program,” said Mike Kennedy, President of Vance & Hines. “We’re happy to continue to partner with AFT to support all levels of riders in this great American racing series.” Vance & Hines is also Harley-Davidson’s partner for the design, manufacturing and selling of the XG750R motorcycle which competes in the AFT Production Twins class. Race teams purchase the bikes directly through the Vance & Hines Racing Development Center in Brownsburg, IN. The company’s 2021 AFT contingency sponsorship provides cash awards to the first through fifth finishers in AFT SuperTwins, AFT Production Twins and AFT Singles at each of the 17 races on the schedule. The payouts range from $500 for first place to $50 for fifth place, with $1,150 available per class at each event. At the end of the season, Vance & Hines will offer a $5,000 bonus to the number one finisher in each class. To qualify for the contingency payments, riders must run an eligible Vance & Hines exhaust system, a Vance & Hines decal on their race bike and have a Vance & Hines patch on their racing leathers. ■

Return to Racing! 2021 MISSION KING OF THE BAGGERS SERIES

The King of the Baggers debuted in October 2020 to rave reviews, introducing a whole new style of racing to the world. The event returns in 2021 with a three-round series held in conjunction with the 2021 MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Series.

T

he King of the Baggers debut at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in October of last year was a rousing success, and will return in 2021 with a three-round series held in conjunction with the 2021 MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Series. The series, which fuels one of the oldest rivalries in motorsport – Harley-Davidson vs. Indian – will begin at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, April 30-May 2, in Braselton, Georgia, and will conclude July 11-13 with the MotoAmerica season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. In between there will be a round in Harley’s back yard at Road America in Elkhart Lake. Wisconsin, June 11-13. While the debut of the King of the Baggers was an invitational, the 2021 series is open to all qualified AMA license holders. Championship points will be tallied at every round, and a National Champion to be crowned at season’s end. The three-round series has also picked up a title sponsor in Mission Foods, the world’s leading brand for tortillas and wraps, and will be called the Mission King of the Baggers Series. Drag Specialties is also a sponsor.

“Honestly, the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers debut race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca went better than we even dreamed of,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “The popularity of the event was crazy so how could we not do more? We know there are plenty of Bagger fans out there as our videos of the debut Laguna event were watched by millions. Having three races gives us the opportunity to bring King of the Baggers to fans to different xxxxxxxxxx areas of the country. We’ve also opted to make the series

open to any qualified racer, which should bring new teams and new bike builds to the series from the aftermarket and motorcycle dealers who specialize in Baggers.” The debut King of the Baggers event was won by S&S Indian’s Tyler O’Hara over Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson’s Hayden Gillim, with Roland Sands Designs-backed Frankie Garcia finishing third on his Indian. O’Hara is returning for 2021 to defend his crown on his Mission Foods S&S Indian Challenger. His biggest challenge may come from Gillim, the ultra-experienced MotoAmerica racer set for a challenge on the Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. Frankie Garcia will also return to the fray to do battle aboard his Roland Sands Design Indian Challenger. New to the series for 2021 is the also-experienced Kyle Wyman. In addition to racing his Panera Bread Ducati Panigale V4R in the HONOS Superbike class, Wyman has also acquired a full factory Harley-Davidson ride on the Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson Road Glide. Wyman and Harley are serious and have been putting in test laps at both Laguna Seca and Inde Motorsports Ranch. ■

TRIPLE THREAT THREE STEPS TO PEAK PERFORMANCE

Vance & Hines VO2 air cleaners are designed to provide high airflow for peak power.

T

here are a lot of ways to make a touring bike look good. The FatBook holds plenty of examples of parts a rider can swap out, stick on, bolt on or light up to change the look of a bike. When it comes to making performance enhancements, though, there are only three key areas that need to get an upgrade – air, fuel and exhaust. The right products for these three systems can make the difference between a snoozer and a sleeper. Performance is something Vance & Hines has focused on since Terry Vance and Byron Hines first started making parts back in 1979. That focus hasn’t changed over the decades, and now the marriage of V-Twins and performance parts makes more sense than ever. V-Twins have become more capable and more powerful, which means the temptation to take them to the next level of performance is hard to resist. As evidence, we only need to point to last year’s Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the new Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League that has sprung into action this year. It goes without saying that Vance & Hines was a part of that race and will continue to field a team in the new series. After all, who better to participate than a company that has focused on racing throughout the past 40-plus years? Off the track, Vance & Hines continues to help dealers turn their customers’ touring bikes into performance rides with air, fuel and exhaust enhancements that add power and

style. The entire Vance & Hines product line is made in the USA, right at the company’s headquarters in Santa Fe Springs, California.

1 TAKE A DEEP BREATH Air cleaners by Vance & Hines combine both form and function. The VO2 covers are CNC machined from billet aluminum and come in a variety of designs, including VO2 X, Blade, Rouge, Cagefighter and Naked. The latter is for riders who want the increased airflow and performance, while still maintaining a stock look. The VO2 X is for riders aiming for peak performance, and it is paired with a highflow air filter to extract maximum power from a motor. The VO2 air cleaners are available for all Harley models up to the current year, and they are now approved in California EO #D-632-4. The VO2 series comes as a complete kit, with a washable, reusable filter as well as a specially designed backing plate and breather assemblies. Even installation hardware is included. Vance & Hines designed the Cagefighter as an ultralight, yet high-performance air cleaner, and it is laser-cut in-house from stainless steel. For 2021, the Cagefighter is available in a brushed or black finish. It’s the perfect match for any of the Vance & Hines Stainless 2-1 exhausts, the Upsweep or the all-new Hi-Output.

When the *Fuelpak FP3 module is plugged in, live sensor data can be reviewed on the paired smartphone to analyze speed, rpm, cylinder head temperature, voltage, gear selection and other critical information. Vance & Hines has an extensive collection of exhausts, from full systems to slip-ons and headers, to help customers create the exact look they want for their ride. Most exhausts are available in chrome or black, too.

The FP3 has harnessed the power of smartphones (iPhone or Android) and Bluetooth technology to make tuning as easy as 1-2-3. Connect the FP3 app to a smartphone and motorcycle, select the right tune, and ride. The Vance & Hines tuner is made to fit nearly all Harley-Davidson models from 2007 to current. The design has a big impact on style, of course, with a 4½-inch muffler body at the exit, but it also boosts horsepower and torque while offering a solid weight savings for better performance. Customers can easily get a big improvement in their engine performance by simply installing a Pro Pipe, VO2 air and the Fuelpak FP3. Vance & Hines Power Duals head pipes can be paired with any of the brand’s slip-on exhausts, creating a custom look that amps up performance. the next generation of aftermarket products. Vance & Hines is also a dominant force on the V-Twin scene, not content to take a back seat at events like Sturgis and Daytona. Vance & Hines can be found where V-Twin riders are, so when a customer walks into a dealership, they already know the brand and its commitment to the V-Twin lifestyle. Most recently, Vance & Hines was on hand at Daytona Bike Week with two retail and installation locations. The company’s newly updated big rigs were set up at Daytona International Speedway and Daytona Harley-Davidson so customers could come check out the top air, fuel and exhaust products available. A team of product experts helped riders select the best performance package for their bike and riding style. Some customers opted for the instant gratification of on-site installation, while others took a shopping list home to their local dealer. Vance & Hines has been a big part of the racing scene for decades, racking up wins and championships in NHRA, AMA Pro Racing and American Flat Track. At the same time, the Vance & Hines name has long been associated with that of Harley-Davidson, in part because of the V-Twin parts produced by Vance & Hines and because of the racing relationship the two brands had for many years. So, of course, Vance & Hines jumped at the chance to be involved in the inaugural Drag Specialties King of

the Baggers race. It was the perfect chance to combine the brand’s V-Twin performance knowledge and road racing experience. Vance & Hines tapped veteran road racer Hayden Gillim to pilot the Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. The eight-lap race gave the racers the unique challenge of navigating a Bagger around Laguna Seca’s famously hilly, twisty course. Vance & Hines was one of the top teams in the field, with Gillim crossing the finish line in second place, just under two seconds behind the race winner. Durable, Practical, Fade-Free Luggage These two new pieces share the same attributes as the rest of the Route 1 collection. Each piece is constructed from proprietary UltraMax material, which is durable and fade-free. In fact, Nelson-Rigg is so confident about the color-fast UltraMax that the company’s Lifetime Warranty even covers fading. Each piece of luggage has a solid base and rigid construction that helps maintain shape. Outside, reflective piping increases visibility. All Route 1 luggage comes with a 100 percent waterproof rain cover, too, with the exception of the Rover. The new Road Trip Saddlebags have a wide range of applications, fitting most Harley-Davidson Softail and Dyna models as well as other model cruisers. The custom fender strut mounting brackets ensure a secure fit, and they are bolstered by an adjustable, self-fastening detachable yoke and two self-fastening straps per saddlebag.

The Route 1 Road Trip Saddlebags have a wide range of applications, fitting most Harley-Davidson Softail and Dyna models as well as other model cruisers. Each can hold up to 10 pounds of luggage, and there are pockets and straps for more storage options.

Each Road Trip Saddlebag can accommodate as much as 10 pounds of items. Of course, not all of that has to go inside the saddlebags. Exterior MOLLE panels allow riders to attach the Nelson-Rigg RG-1060 Fuel Bottle Holder or other MOLLE-compatible accessories. An outer pocket with internal elastic straps increases the storage options. Finally, lockable zippers complete the package. Nelson-Rigg designed the new Traveler Lite Trunk/Rack Bag to be extremely versatile. It can be attached to a motorcycle/trike tour trunk top rack, but it can also be used as a liner bag in all Harley-Davidson Tour-Packs as well as the tour trunks of other modern cruiser models. It will also attach to a motorcycle backrest rack/sissy bar. The Traveler Lite Trunk/Rack Bag has an ample 35 liters of storage. In the main compartment, organization is easy thanks to a zippered mesh pocket. Lockable zippers and carry handles add to the perks. Nelson-Rigg knows that riders don’t want to spend a lot of time loading up when they could be riding instead, which is why the Traveler Lite is designed to be easy to mount. Attached quick-release straps and a self-fastening strap are all that is needed.

T

he goal of Nelson-Rigg’s Route 1 Cruiser Collection is to offer riders luggage options for every kind of trip, whether it’s just a day of riding or a long-haul journey. The mix-and-match options include various sizes, mounting points and even the Rover Pet Carrier so dogs can get out and ride, too. Now, the Route 1 Cruiser Collection offers even more versatility with the introduction of the Road Trip Saddlebags and the Traveler Lite Trunk/Rack Bag.

Nelson-Rigg has designed the Route 1 Cruiser Collection to fit a range of models, which means dealers have fewer SKUs to deal with. New Finish For Performance Pipes optimize the performance of that Milwaukee-Eight engine. A stylish, multi-faceted machined end cap rounds out the overall appearance. Given that S&S doesn’t build anything that doesn’t make power, the team leaned on the company’s more than 60 years of influential history of manufacturing performance to come up with the design for the SuperStreet and the numbers speak for themselves. Designed for the range of Harley-Davidson MilwaukeeEight Softails, the SuperStreet was built to provide an average 15 percent increase of horsepower over the stock arrangement. It’s also built to provide plenty of ground clearance, and works with floorboards, forward controls and factory passenger pegs. Riders with saddlebags on their bikes take note – the SuperStreet works with OEM and similar size bags. It will also work with mid-mounts by adding S&S Cycle’s brake pedal kit (available separately). The SuperStreet is available with S&S Cycle’s own highflow catalytic converter, which means riders across the country can enjoy a street-legal performance boost. The stainless SuperStreet is 50-state legal for the 2018-2020 M8 Softail models. (CARB EO# K-010-13) ■

Rip It Up!

Short, Upswept Pipes for Early Dyna is designed with its megaphone muffler ending well short of the rear axle, and mounted up high for plenty of ground clearance, making it a perfect complement for a tricked-out Dyna. Like all the Ripper applications before it, systems for MilwaukeeEight and Twin Cam Baggers, select M-8 Softails and later model year (2006 to 2017) Dynas, these early-year fitments are also a onepiece design. The equal-length and stepped headpipes – 1¾-inch opening to 17/8-inch – the advance design collector and the system’s short, upswept megaphone muffler are all welded together. Installation is a hassle-free snap and the system clears everything with room to spare. The early-Dyna Rippers are available in black, chrome or stainless steel. The black and chrome versions are made with 16-gauge mild-steel, and come with full three-piece heat shields. The stainless-steel systems use 16-gauge stainless-steel that is TIG welded by hand, and come with small, two-piece stainless heatshields that cover the head pipe. All of the systems come supplied with 18mm O2 bungs and 12mm adapters. Because Bassani packs performance and style into every exhaust it builds, the Ripper systems have plenty of hotrod performance to match their cool look. Bassani calls this expected boost, “power you can feel,” and designed the stepped-header systems to deliver the super-scavenging horsepower-andtorque boost that makes 2-into-1 systems popular. The pipes also have that distinctive Bassani bark, and the spiralcore baffle inside is removable. ■

Your customers with those early-model Harley-Davidson Dynas can now add one of Bassani’s short, upswept Ripper 2-into-1 exhausts to their setup. With it, they’ll get a style and performance boost, and that glorious Bassani exhaust note.

TIRES

Re-Creating a Classic Updating a Popular V-Twin Tire

Vowles and his team made changes to the tread pattern, actually simplifying it to increase the amount of rubber on the road and extend mileage. The new Cobra Chrome compound was a key element, as well. “We were already a market leader in longevity with the original Cobra, so it was tough to improve on, but I knew we could,” says Vowles. “We had new technology. I spoke to our chemist and said I’d like to get more longevity without losing any dry grip or wet performance. Our chemist did a fantastic job. We came up with a number of different compounds before we chose the right one.”

I

t’s not always easy to improve on something that is already a success, but that’s what Avon Tyres decided to do with their iconic Cobra tires. The brand’s premier V-Twin tire got an upgrade, transforming into the Cobra Chrome.

It’s sometimes hard to improve on a classic, but that’s exactly what Avon Tyres did with its popular Cobra tires. The Cobra Chrome offers supreme handling in wet and dry conditions, and is designed to be long-lasting.

Ashley Vowles, Motorcycle Tyre Development Manager for Avon Tyres, headed up the design for the Cobra Chrome. He explains that upgrading a current tire begins with testing to see how it performed. “The Cobra tire had been out for a number of years, so it was important for us as a design department to know how the tire performs on a number of different bikes in different environments,” says Vowles.

As it turns out, the Cobra was still a competitive tire. But after reviewing the results, the Avon design team decided to improve longevity without sacrificing the performance that the Cobra offered in both wet and dry conditions. In fact, it was important to balance longevity, handling and stability in the Cobra Chrome to suit two very different markets. North American riders have miles of long, straight asphalt that require a durable tire, while European riders more often find themselves on twisty mountain roads that require deft handling and stability. 34

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2021

Not only did the Cobra Chrome have to satisfy two different geographic markets, but it also had to be a good tire for a wide range of models, from older V-Twins to the latest fully loaded Baggers. There are 67 different sizes available, including trike fitments, as well as black, narrow white sidewall and wide white sidewall styles.

The original Cobra was known for its snakeskin sidewall, and the Cobra Chrome offers a simplified, updated look with the snakeskin effect now on the tread edge for a unique, bold appearance. Avon Tyres is encouraging riders to purchase the Cobra Chrome tires with a consumer reward program that will run through October 31, 2021. U.S. customers will receive a prepaid Visa card worth $20 with the purchase of one tire, or $60 for a full set. The cards can be used anywhere Visa is accepted, except gas pumps and ATMs. ■

hen it comes to aftermarket lighting on V-Twins, riders shouldn’t have to choose just one color and stick with it. With the new ProGLOW line of LED lighting accessories from Custom Dynamics, riders can pick any color with an easy smartphone app while giving their V-Twin a true show bike look. The ProGLOW line includes the ProGLOW color changing accent light system plus ProGLOW headlamps and passing lamps. Using the latest in color-changing technology, the products have an expansive offering of not just colors but patterns and combinations of functions, too. It’s even possible to choose custom colors via the rider’s iOS or Android camera, and light patterns can be synced to music. It is all easy to control with the ProGLOW Bluetooth controller, which pairs with the app on the rider’s iOS or Android device to enable virtually unlimited customized combinations. The app runs in background mode, enabling other device apps to be used simultaneously. Three light zones (front, mid and rear) can even be controlled independently. Designed for the ultimate in lighting creativity, the ProGLOW color changing accent light system includes an array of LED lighting strips, wheel lights, wire extensions and splitters to enable riders to put lighting exactly where they want it. The ProGLOW LED strips come in two sizes, including a 12-inch strip that is great under the tank or saddlebags and a 2½-inch strip that provides a pop of illumination in places like the underside of the horn or air cleaner. The self-adhesive strips are easy to mount. Customers can buy each component separately to create a custom lighting package or choose from one of three available kits. These all-in-one kits come with everything

necessary, including the wires and ProGLOW Bluetooth controller, and are designed for one of three illumination options. There is an Engine Kit, an Engine and Ground Effects Kit, and a Full Bike Kit. The ProGLOW headlamps and passing lamps are designed to fit Harley-Davidson models, and there is even an included wiring adapter for 2014 and newer models plus a mounting ring for 2013 and older models. The 7-inch headlamp provides a big punch of light, producing a 3250-lumen high beam and a 2250-lumen low beam. In fact, it shines brighter than the stock headlamp itself. Custom Dynamics has built an optional Brake Alert into the Bluetooth controller, which allows all LED accent lights to transition to a bright, solid red when the brake is applied, with an optional override for forward-facing lights. There is also a built-in Battery Saver, which allows the user to track battery voltage and schedule actions accordingly, and added security features prevent unauthorized access to your controller. ■

High-Mileage Relationship A Tire Brand Committed to V-Twins

Dunlop’s MT Multi-Tread technology – a long-wearing compound in the center increases longevity and extends tread wear, while the shoulders are made from a softer compound that provides outstanding lateral grip when cornering. Longevity meets performance to offer riders longer wear, greater lean angle, better stability, more wet grip, more neutral steering characteristics and greater bump compliance.

Ideal for touring and cruiser riders who want an outstanding blend of longevity, stability and handling, the Dunlop American Elite tires are a popular choice with customers wanting American-made tires on their American-made motorcycles.

Dunlop has gotten a lot of positive feedback from customers who rack up the miles on their American Elite tires. Al Villy says his 2015 Street Glide gets up to 30,000 miles on a rear tire and more than 20,000 miles on a front tire. He sums up his experience by saying, “Mileage is what I want out of it, and the bike handles terrific!”

In addition to providing V-Twin riders with longlasting performance, the American Elite range also offers a nice style boost. They’re available in black sidewall, wide white sidewall and narrow white sidewall styles.

D

unlop has been Original Equipment on HarleyDavidson bikes for 37 years. More than 10 million tires later, most of the 2021 models from Harley still feature Dunlop tires. That relationship alone shows how closely entrenched Dunlop is in the V-Twin scene, but it goes beyond being OE on Harleys. Today, Dunlop tires like the American Elite and participation in programs like the Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League further that relationship between Dunlop and V-Twins. Ideal for touring and cruiser riders who want an outstanding blend of longevity, stability and handling, the Dunlop American Elite tires are made in the USA from foreign and domestic materials, allowing riders to put Americanmade tires on their American-made motorcycles. The tire is completely designed, tested and made in America, with manufacturing at the Dunlop plant in Buffalo, New York. The American Elite name is prominently displayed on the sidewall of each tire as a proud statement of its origins. American Elite tires are made to be long lasting and confidence inspiring, which is achieved with a combination of design, technology and materials. The rear tire features

American Elite tires are offered in black sidewall, wide white sidewall and narrow white sidewall styles. In addition to its extensive involvement with V-Twins, Dunlop is also known for its prowess on the race track. When the inaugural King of the Baggers race was announced for 2020, Dunlop jumped at the opportunity to combine both worlds. For a jacket that looks and works as good off the bike as on, the denim Highway jacket is an easy choice. THRASHIN’s Highway jacket is made from heavy 12-ounce black denim that will break in nicely for that awesome fit that only cotton can provide. At the same time, THRASHIN has equipped the Highway with low-key abrasion resistance by way of Dupont Kevlar fabric stitched inside the back, shoulders, and arms. Each Wide Tripper seat is handcrafted with quality raw materials, from the baseplate up to the cover. The fiberglass baseplate provides a comfortable, durable foundation, and it is carpeted on the underside to protect the bike’s components. Polyurethane bumpers help dampen vibrations for a smoother ride. The heart of every Mustang seat is the company’s proprietary controlled-density polyurethane foam. It is comfortable from the very first ride since there is no break-in period, and it will retain its shape and support characteristics for years to come. Mustang seats are designed for even weight displacement to avoid pressure points, allowing riders to stay in the saddle longer without numbness or fatigue. The finishing touch for a Mustang seat is the handstitched cover, which looks like leather while offering the durability of high-quality expanded vinyl. The seams are reinforced, and the hemmed bottom edges are handriveted to the baseplates for both sturdy construction and a clean finish. ■

hen the sun starts shining longer and the temperatures start creeping higher, riders across the country know warm and freedom-inspiring rides are coming. Your customers are likely gearing up for the normal, wheelto-wheel maintenance to get their bikes prepared for an influx of asphalt time. However, a key item that is often overlooked and easily neglected is sufficient lighting. J.W. Speaker has roots in vehicle lighting dating back to the 1930s and is still driven by the Speaker family today, committed to engineering and manufacturing high-quality, USA-made lighting solutions. As passionate enthusiasts themselves, the crew at J.W. Speaker recognized that your customers’ two-wheel cruises shouldn’t be limited to just weekend afternoons. When it comes to navigating dark roads, a great upgrade over stock headlights are J.W. Speaker’s Adaptive 2 series of LED motorcycle headlights. These lights are the result of the company’s ongoing efforts to shine a beam of confidence on your customer’s night rides. Adaptive 2 lights are the second in a series of dynamically adaptive motorcycle headlights. on the road to develop the on-board intelligence system that achieves this lighting function by sensing the natural leaning of the bike when cornering and putting the light where it’s needed most. A key feature to note with the Adaptive 2 LED Series lights is their ability to tune lighting for corners with both the low beams and the proprietary ComfortLite high beams, an evolution over the first in the series. Of course, visibility isn’t only important in the corners. In straight-ahead situations, Adaptive 2 series lights provide a punch of light not only 1,500 ft. down the road, but also cover the ditch-to-ditch span of a typical highway. J.W. Speaker has many of your customers’ rides covered with Adaptive 2 applications available in 5¾-inch and 7-inch sizes in both regular and pedestal mount styles. They even offer a dual, 5¾-inch application designed to upgrade 2013 and older Harley-Davidson Road Glide models as well as a diamond-shaped model for Victory applications. CHEMICALS & LUBRICANTS

V-Twin Wellness Package Oils and Additives for Efficient Engines

LIQUI MOLY’S 4T 20W-50 Street oil keeps engines running smoothly and efficiently under all operating conditions, and it ensures gentle clutching.

For big-bore Harley-Davidsons, LIQUI MOLY’s HD Synth 20W-50 is formulated with properties designed to reduce temperatures and keep everything running smoothly.

T

reating V-Twin engines well is about more than just keeping up with oil changes. The additives available from LIQUI MOLY are able to keep systems running cleaner and more reliably. By pairing those additives with LIQUI MOLY’s fully-synthetic motor oils, dealers can create maintenance bundles for customers, offering a convenient “wellness package” for a V-Twin instead of just selling a few quarts of oil. Fresh oil will never perform optimally if it is put into a dirty engine. When it is time for an oil change, LIQUI MOLY suggests beginning with its Engine Flush Shooter. This cleaning fluid removes deposits from the oil circuit, dissolving sludge and collecting residues as it and the used oil make their way to the drain. The shooter leaves the engine clean for the next round of oil, creating an environment for less wear, lower emissions and improved performance. When the fresh oil goes in, it doesn’t have to fight old deposits and will not degrade prematurely. The shooter works well with all 4-stroke engines, and just one small bottle will service two quarts of oil. Once the engine is clean, it is time for the new oil. For big-bore Harley-Davidsons, LIQUI MOLY has HD Synth 20W-50. It is formulated with those engines in mind, with properties designed to reduce temperatures and keep everything running smoothly. The select base oils and high-quality additives ensure optimal lubrication, engine cleanliness and excellent friction properties. Big-bore Indian models will benefit from LIQUI MOLY 4T 20W-50 Street oil. This high-performance oil keeps engines running smoothly and efficiently under all operating conditions, and it ensures gentle clutching. Indian FTR and Scout motorcycles run well on LIQUI MOLY 4T 10W-60 Race oil, which ensures maximum performance and protection for engines with or without a wet clutch.

LIQUI MOLY 4T’s Additive Shooter helps removes deposits from the fuel system and prevents corrosion of the components.

48

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2021

Once the oil has been changed, the final step of the process is adding LIQUI MOLY 4T Additive Shooter to the fuel. This shooter removes deposits from the fuel system and prevents corrosion of the components. Valves, spark plugs, the combustion chamber, and the rest of the fuel system will be clean and protected, allowing everything to run more efficiently. LIQUI MOLY recommends using 4T Additive Shooter every 1,200 miles to keep a V-Twin engine performing at its best. The shooter can be used on any 4-stroke engine, and one bottle will treat as much as 2½ gallons of fuel. ■

Solid Shine

Diffused LEDs for a Uniform Glow

Kuryakyn’s range of Tracer LED lighting products offer a big upgrade in illumination and style. The lineup now includes front and rear turn signal conversions, which are a good complement to the popular Tracer LED fairing lower grills and rear saddlebag support inserts.

W

hat’s the point of having a good-looking bike if no one can see it? Kuryakyn’s Tracer line of LED lighting products are high-tech solutions for high visibility. The Tracer line gives Harley-Davidson Touring and Bagger models a big upgrade in illumination, and the line now includes front and rear turn signal conversions. The Tracer line pairs intense LED lighting with a special lens that diffuses the light, creating a glow reminiscent of the lighting found on modern muscle cars and luxury sedans. The opaque Tracer lenses absorb and distribute the LED light output at a greater angle, which creates a uniform lighting effect across the entire lens. Or, more simply, the diffused lens makes the individual LEDs appear to be one solid light source. Each product in the Tracer line is plug-and-play, and installation requires only a few basic tools. The Tracer front and rear turn signal conversions are the latest in the line. The bright LEDs and diffusing lens create crisp, smooth and solid illumination. What that means is that there are no dots and no shadows; just a uniform glow throughout the entire turn signal. The front turn signal conversions sit flush with the stock housings for a clean, low-profile look, and the polycarbonate lens integrates seamlessly with the housing. There is no bezel, so there is no need to match the finish of the housing. These bullet-style signals come with white/amber or amber/amber lighting, and the lenses are available in amber or smoke. The Tracer rear turn signal conversions are red LED bulletstyle lights, and they are direct replacements for the OEM bulbs and lenses. Customers can choose from a red or smoke lens.

Kuryakyn introduced the Tracer LED fairing lower grills and rear saddlebag support inserts last year. The Tracer LED fairing lower grills serve a dual purpose, increasing a bike’s visibility to oncoming traffic, while also adding style to the front end. The durable injection-molded ABS grills are available in a chrome or satin black finish. Under the smoked polycarbonate lens are full-time white running lights as well as amber turn signals that illuminate when activated. The finishing touch is the honeycomb-style steel grill. Available for all 2014 and newer Harley twincooled models with fairing lowers, grills are direct snap-in replacements for the black plastic radiator grills. The Tracer LED rear saddlebag support inserts make the rear of the bike more visible while giving the body a cleaner, more streamlined look. This transformation happens thanks to the lightweight, chrome-plated ABS housing that extends to fill in the space where the saddlebag meets the bike. The Tracer LED Inserts provide intense red auxiliary run, turn and brake lighting. ■

Stepped-Up Street Glides T-Bar Relocation Brackets

P

erformance Baggers are here and they aren’t going anywhere soon – except maybe to a racetrack near you. As a natural extension of the hot-rod Bagger scene, riders everywhere are taking these big-bodied, big-inch beasts out and putting in the laps. Anyone paying attention to this trend of building aggressive handling, power, and braking into big Touring bikes could see this coming. Now that Performance Bagger segment has its own race series, the Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League, and LA Choppers is right there on the scene with parts and accessories for these specialized bikes. In fact, LA Choppers has been there since the beginning, providing bars and risers built for superior handling and performance. As soon as the company released its Kage Fighter T-bars in a variety of fitments, the setup became a popular choice for Performance Bagger builders. In 2019 the company released the Road Glide Kage Fighters for the Touring market and they have been a big success ever since. As popular as those Road Glide specials were, LA Choppers started hearing from Street Glide riding customers who wanted a traditional T-bar for the precise handling and control they offer. However, installing T-bars can present some issues when it comes to the Street Glide models. For this, LA Choppers has come up with the Street Glide T-bar relocation bracket. These American-made, CNC-machined “drop down” brackets allow your customers to run any LA Choppers Kage Fighters as well as any T-bar on the market with their Batwing fairing. Installation is a snap and the brackets mount right up to the stock triple tree riser inputs. Once installed, the Street Glide bracket comes back 2½ inches towards the rider, and up about 1 inch. This new configuration should be taken into consideration when choosing the Kage Fighter model or a T-bar setup. The bracket includes fresh hardware, and two bottom solid riser bushings as the top bushings are incorporated into the brackets themselves for a strong, clean, seamless look. These brackets are offered in both gloss black and chrome.

LA Choppers’ new Street Glide T-bar relocation kits allow customers to run any LA Choppers Kage Fighters as well as any T-bar on the market with their Batwing fairing.

High-Tech Solutions to Prevent Leaks

GASKETS & SEALS

Gaskets and Seals

Cometic AFM technology creates a tough, resilient gasket that’s suitable for a variety of applications on V-Twins. AFM gaskets feature a strong aluminum template with a chemically blown, compounded nitrile synthetic rubber bonded to the outside.

E

ngine seals and gaskets have an important but underappreciated role – seal in motor oil and primary lube and keep dirt and water out, all while managing extreme temperatures and plenty of vibrations. It’s a lot of responsibility, but thankfully, designing and manufacturing durable, high-tech seals and gaskets is Cometic’s expertise. For Harley-Davidson applications, Cometic has applied its proprietary AFM (Aluminum Foamette Material) technology to create a tough, resilient gasket that’s suitable for a variety of applications on V-Twins. AFM gaskets feature a strong aluminum template with a chemically blown, compounded nitrile synthetic rubber bonded to the outside. The aluminum core is tough yet malleable, while the nitrile coating creates a gas, oil and chemical-resistant seal that can withstand the extreme temperatures of hard-working V-Twin engines without breaking down or becoming brittle. Perhaps most importantly, Cometic’s AFM gaskets have an 85 percent shape-recovery thanks to the malleability of the aluminum template and springiness of the chemically blown synthetic-rubber coating. That means these gaskets provide a more resilient and secure seal that can accommodate high vibration, component flex and thermal expansion. While pressed-fiber or coated gaskets may weep or leak due to their lack of elasticity, AFM gaskets adapt to the sealing surface and help maintain strong torque retention for a long-lasting seal.

Speaking of seals, if your customers complain about oil weeping from the bottom of the primary cover, odds are the notorious single-lipped OEM shift-shaft seal is the culprit. This seal gets a workout every time your clients shift gears, and features a basic design that’s prone to wearing out. Cometic’s shaft seals all feature a dual-lip design for trouble-free operation, and the company’s shift-shaft seal in particular has developed a cult following thanks to how reliably it solves the dreaded shifter-seal mess. If you’re working on a customer’s primary then you’re already within striking distance of the shift-shaft seal, so do them a favor and suggest a replacement. When you do, don’t forget to clean off the debris and corrosion that commonly collects in the splines of the shaft. Another helpful tip for shift-shaft seal installation is to wrap some packing tape or a piece of plastic bag over the shaft. Smear the sheath with grease and the new seal will slide on easily with no risk of damage from the sharp splines. Cometic’s shaft seals and gaskets are available for every mating surface on your customers’ Harleys, from the output shaft on up to the rocker box covers. Drag Specialties carries individual gaskets and seals plus complete primary, top-end and engine-rebuild kits that include AFM gaskets as well as Cometic’s other gasket and seal technologies to provide a reliable closure. ■

HANDLEBARS & RISERS

Custom Control

Handlebars and Risers for V-Twins

Swapping out handlebars is a quick-and-easy upgrade that also makes a dramatic difference in comfort and control. Drag Specialties has a massive range of styles from which your customers can choose.

Your customers can pair up a new set of bars with one of myriads of styles of risers offered by Drag Specialties. The lineup features a big range of heights and bends.

O

ne of the most distinctive and affordable changes a motorcyclist can make to their V-Twin is swapping out the OEM handlebars for aftermarket bars and risers. Whether it’s Ape Hangers, Beach Bars or any other popular style, Drag Specialties gives riders pretty much every configuration possible. In addition to riser heights and handlebar bend styles, Drag also gives riders a choice when it comes to the diameter of the bars, with one-inch, 1¼-inch and 1½-inch diameters available. All of the handlebars are manufactured in the USA. Starting with the standard size, Drag Specialties has 1-inch handlebars constructed of steel tubing. With a variety of finishes (chrome, flat black and gloss black), bends and heights, riders get just the right look and feel to suit their style. Ape Hanger options range from 10 inches to 18 inches, and there are Bagger, Dragster and Buckhorn styles, too. Drag also has 1-inch touring handlebars, including Ape Hangers up to 18 inches and a Beach Bar. The Drag Specialties 1¼-inch touring handlebars are designed to be a direct bolt-on upgrade for 2015-2020 Road Glide models. The bars are truly an easy upgrade, working with the stock controls, including HarleyDavidson heated grips. The bars have more than 35 degrees of adjustment, and they come with standard black control clamps to replace the OEM clamps.

Drag offers a handlebar riser/top clamp kit that comes complete with two risers, a one-piece top clamp and all necessary hardware. Available for bars with a 1-inch or 1½-inch diameter clamping area, these machined billet aluminum kits can add anywhere from 1½ inches of rise to 12 inches. For handlebars with a 1-inch diameter clamping area, customers can also choose the Drag Specialties forged aluminum handlebar risers, which come in straight and pullback styles with as much as 8½ inches of rise. Two other Drag options are the socket-head handlebar riser kits and the deuce-style risers. The socket-head risers are chrome-plated forged aluminum that offer up to a 6-inch boost, while the chrome deuce-style risers feature 5½ inches of rise and 2 inches of pullback. The 1¼-inch Buffalo bars and Buffalo touring bars pair perfectly with the Buffalo risers from Drag. The clamping area of the bars is just 1 inch in diameter, and the handlebar clamps can cover that smaller area for a clean look. The billet aluminum risers provide up to 12 inches of rise. Customers who want the biggest, fattest look possible can spring for the 1½-inch Big Buffalo bars, which maintain their size even in the clamping area. Designed for 1999 and newer controls and master cylinders, these bars pair with the 1½-inch Big Buffalo riser kits in chrome or black for as much as 6 inches of rise. ■

VOLTAGE REGULATORS

Reliable Electrical

Drag Specialties Voltage Regulators

O

ne little electrical part can make the difference between whether a motorcycle goes or just sits on the sidelines. A faulty voltage regulator can be especially frustrating because the entire unit has to be replaced. Drag Specialties-branded voltage regulators are premium USA-made products that undergo extensive testing to ensure reliability and longevity, so a bike can keep going. Drag Specialties Premium voltage regulators can be used as OE replacements, but they are also a great choice for custom builders and DIY mechanics looking for a reliable and easily installed voltage regulator to keep an old bike running or help light the spark in a new one. They provide accurately regulated voltage under all electrical loads. In fact, the Drag voltage regulator will work on some very old bikes, going as far back as the 1958 XL and the 1976 Shovelhead. It is an ideal part for builders putting an old engine in a new chassis, or even for a full restoration build. The voltage regulator’s small size belies the huge amount of work that went into its creation. It is the result of two years of design and development, all undertaken with the goal of creating a regulator that has outstanding performance, reliability and heat management. The attention to detail that went into the design did not stop when the final product was approved. During the assembly process, every voltage regulator undergoes three tests to ensure there are no hindrances to its reliability and performance. The assembly happens close to home, too – the voltage regulators are made in the USA, using domestic-made circuit boards, so it is easier for Drag Specialties to manage quality control. One of the factors that had to be considered during development of the Drag Specialties voltage regulator was heat. Heat is the worst enemy of electrical components, but it’s also an inevitable by-product of a voltage regulator’s job. Each Premium voltage regulator is designed for superior internal heat management so that it can withstand even the most extreme conditions. The result is that the regulator has better reliability for continued outstanding performance. Drag Specialties offers the Premium voltage regulators in a chrome or black finish with all-aluminum die-cast housings, and fitments are available for all early- and latemodel applications. In addition to the premium quality of the regulators, each one is housed in Drag Specialties Premium Packaging, which makes the product easy to spot at a glance and presents an attractive package that is ready for display. ■

How many of your Harley-Davidson Road Glide customers would you estimate plan to upgrade their bike’s sound system? With the cockpit of the motorcycle being where the riders spend their time, estimating the majority of them would likely be a safe bet. The latest accessory from the Saddle Tramp team aims to equip your Road Glide riders with a convenient complement to the upgraded stereo they’ve been eyeing. The 95-HDIF2 Road Glide Inner Fairing from Saddle Tramp is a replacement inner fairing kit designed to accommodate almost any Double-DIN stereo unit with the standard, 4-inch-tall measurement. This fairing has your Road Glide FLT customers covered over a 15-year span, covering the Harley model within the 1998 to 2013 year range. The originalequipped fairing is designed to only fit a 2-inch-tall, Single-DIN stereo, which doesn’t leave much room for riders to view their choice of tunes. The Saddle Tramp team knows customers who are upgrading their stereo aren’t just sticking to new source units, they’re typically stepping-up with speakers to match. This inner fairing kit includes the necessary stereo mounting hardware along with speaker plates in three different sizes. Included are 6.5-inch and 6x9-inch plates for standard-size speakers, and a blank plate can be adapted to the speaker size of your customer’s choice.

Parts that Look Good, and Perform Great

P

opular with custom builders, the 4-piston and 6-piston calipers and stainless steel rotors produced by Hawg Halters Inc. are performance upgrades with a clean, show-quality finish. However, there are more than just brakes available at HHI, all of it produced right there in Dahlonega, Georgia. Custom calipers need equally custom controls, and HHI also offers sleek, matching-design forward control kits, billet handlebar controls, switch housing assemblies and throttle housings. The company also has the specialized X-23 bolt-on 6-degree triple tree assemblies for 23-inch wheel swaps, and the X-26 bolt-on neck rake kits complete with new fenders for 26-inch wheel installations.

Cool Customs

Hawg Halters offers a range of high-quality forward controls kits for Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight Softail and Touring models. The controls are adjustable for a custom fit.

For increasing fork rake and a bike’s overall wheelbase, but maintain a stock look, HHI produces 4-degree and 6-degree triple trees designed to accept OE Harley fork covers, headlights or full nacelles. The 4-degree kits are typically used with 21-inch or 23-inch wheels, the 6-degree kits used with 26-inch wheels. The company’s large range of custom parts and accessories are designed to function and look great, a killer combination when installed on a ground-up custom or a slightly modified stocker. HHI uses only high-quality, aircraft-grade 6061 billet aluminum, and the latest-specification stainless steel alloys. Everything is carefully engineered, precision CNC machined then polished, chromed or anodized to show-quality standards.

Popular with custom builders, Hawg Halters’s lineup of calipers is designed to provide enhanced caliper response and superior brake lever feel.

Consider the 500 Series differential bore 4-piston calipers. They feature a smaller-diameter piston at the lead-in of the rotor with a larger piston on the trailing side. It’s a design that results in equalized heat distribution throughout the brake pad for optimum friction dynamics, with the added benefit of enhanced caliper response and brake lever feel. HHI’s triple-tree and neck-rake kits exhibit similar engineering detail. Bolt-ons with no extra modifications required, the X-23 6-degree triple trees for 23-inch wheel conversions position the front wheel forward approximately 2-inches while maintaining stock trail geometry. The X-26 Neck-Rake Kits, compatible with factory suspensions, maintain all stock clearances and offer the choice of a Slim Wrap steel fender or a stock-style FL fender with all required spacers and mounts. ■

Motorcycle Lifeline

A Place for Obscure, Yet Necessary, Parts or Shovelhead? After all, they were front-line models at one time. Sadly, many authorized dealers don’t maintain any sort of perpetual parts inventory for what constitutes obsolete models like those listed above. Many of those Harleys are long gone and forgotten by most dealers who prefer to focus on the more numerous current models offered by the Motor Company. While owners of those early – yet often popular – Harley models might be hard-pressed to find OE parts, there remains a source for hard-to-find bearings, thrust washers and hundreds of other replacement parts required to keep many older Harleys on the road. That source is Eastern Motorcycle Parts, and owners of early Harleys will find more than 640 of Eastern’s part numbers listed in Drag Specialties’ FatBook and OldBook catalogs. In the end, that spells profits for dealers and shops (especially independent shops that cater to the old-bike crowd), and relief for owners of aging Harleys.

When it comes to maintaining older model Harley-Davidsons, knowing that obscure parts like this Bearing Inner Race for now-obsolete 5-speed transmissions are right there in the OldBook gives shops and customers peace of mind.

L

ogic says that hunting down OE replacement parts for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle should begin and end at any authorized dealer. And that’s especially true if the motorcycle happens to be a new-generation Milwaukee-Eight, Twin Cam or latemodel Sportster variant. Authorized dealers have access to plenty of replacement OE parts for those models. But what about factory-spec parts for earlier Harleys such as the Evo, Ironhead Sportster, Knucklehead, Panhead

As the name suggests, Eastern Motorcycle Parts is located along America’s Eastern Seaboard, specifically in the nondescript city of Blackville, South Carolina. But EMP actually traces its roots to Long Island, New York, where in the late 1960s a young man named Gil May and his wife Carol opened doors to a motorcycle repair business known as Gil’s Cycle Shop. Initially, Gil’s catered to service, maintenance and repair of Harleys. Gil was a rather crafty mechanic, and it wasn’t uncommon for him to fabricate, rather than buy new, some of the scarce replacement parts for his customers’ bikes. Eventually he developed a pool of resources that

competently replicated various OE components, and Gil’s machinist skills allowed him to machine-finish the products at his shop, and life went on. Indeed, life went on, and Gil began making duplicates of those same parts for future customer use. In no time, Gil’s Cycle Shop compiled a vast inventory of replacement parts for the local market until Gil and Carol realized that their tiny shop was in an enviable position to supply parts on a national basis as well. Enter Drag Specialties, and by 1972 Gil’s Cycle Shop transformed into Eastern Motorcycle Parts, with many of its components listed in Drag Specialties’ fledging catalog. They weren’t necessarily glamorous parts that customers could marvel at, though. No shiny chromed surfaces and intriguing designs, just needed parts that serve as the building blocks for motorcycle upkeep and maintenance. For the most part EMP’s inventory was composed of nondescript offerings like engine bearings, bushings, washers, shims and such. No doubt, these mundane, yet important parts often became a lifeline to seasoned mechanics who rely on quality components for their customers’ bikes, be it routine maintenance and service, or complete engine and transmission rebuilds. During the following 12 or so years Eastern Motorcycle Parts prospered from its original digs in Long Island, but soon enough the growing company needed more floorspace to accommodate its vast inventory. Gil and Carol eventually settled in Blackville along with all their needed parts and shop equipment such as lathes, mills, drills and the like. By that time their son Jeff was an integral part of the business, too, and after a hectic move-in period,

Eastern Motorcycle Parts resumed business, the inventory eventually expanding into thousands of parts numbers. The business experienced a brief setback, though, in 2012 when Gil passed away. Jeff assumed the company’s lead role, and his mother Carol resumed her position as EMP’s financial watchdog, overseeing the books and helping maintain inventory accountability.

EASTERN MOTORCYCLE PARTS

Drag Specialties stocks more than 640 part numbers from Eastern Motorcycle Parts.

Today EMP is headquartered in a 40,000-square-foot facility, what Jeff describes as an “old-school machine shop.” Eight seasoned employees tend to machinery that includes a CNC lathe, plus mills and such for finish grinding and other machine work to transform raw-finish products into precision parts and components suitable for engine and transmission assembly. Among the part numbers that Drag Specialties stocks are some of the original parts first listed, such as part number DS-194053, better known simply as the Bearing Inner Race for now-obsolete 5-speed transmissions. Then there are the more current additions that have eight-digit part numbers, such as axle spacers for wheel bearings, part number 0222-0473. Many – probably most – Harley owners aren’t familiar with these parts, though, and for good reason. These are non-glamorous components that are tucked deep inside a motorcycle’s nether regions, exposed and replaced generally by seasoned mechanics who apply their skills to keep aging motorcycles on the road. ■

» Motorcycle maintenance and upkeep can be tough and dirty work, but someone has to do it. And, fortunately there’s Eastern Motorcycle Parts and the Drag Specialties FatBook and OldBook catalogs to help them get the job done.

Tuning Solutions

Small Part Replacements and Upgrades Direct-replacement Harley-Davidson throttle position sensors are the latest additions to this lineup. Easy, direct upgrades for a faulty or failing TPS, they’re available for everything from the earliest Magneti-Marelli equipped Touring models of the 1990s to the latest Dynas, Softails, Sportsters, Touring models and V-Rods with a Delphi system. Along with that new fuel-injection hardware, Cycle Pro has also released new replacement float bowls for 40mm CV carburetors. The upgrade float bowls are a direct fit and feature Cycle Pro’s high-performance accelerator-pump circuit. Headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina, Cycle Pro has designed, manufactured and delivered V-Twin problem solvers like this for decades. Cycle Pro’s FatBook lineup includes everything from complete highperformance CV 40mm carburetors to a full array of replacement parts and packages like diaphragm rebuild kits for Keihin and S&S carburetors.

Cycle Pro’s *40mm CV carburetors are assembled with Cycle Pro’s upgrades to the emulsion tube and slide spring, and come with a full assortment of main and pilot jets.

T

here’s not much on a motorcycle that lasts forever, especially when it has anything to do with the way that bike runs, rides, and responds to the throttle. Components making up a HarleyDavidson’s fuel-delivery system are especially vulnerable to wear, true for early carbureted models or the newer fuel-injected machines. The replacement parts to put things right are all available at Cycle Pro, and have been for years. Cycle Pro’s lineup is long, it’s deep and it covers almost everything from the smallest replacement screws, washers and springs that might have gone missing on a carburetor to the most complex sensors and electronics for a fuel-injection system.

There are also EZ Quick carb recalibration/tuner kits for stock-displacement and big-bore Twin Cam and Sportster carburetors. As you can tell, fuel systems are the focus here and Cycle Pro offers a full selection of precisionmade oxygen sensors and small parts like vacuum piston assemblies and idle air-adjustment screw kits for both butterfly-type and CV carbs. One thing of note about all of these items is that they’re more than just OEM replacements, they’re also upgraded parts designed to improve on the stock components. For example, the new Cycle Pro 40mm CV carburetors are assembled with Cycle Pro’s upgrades to the emulsion tube and slide spring and come with a full assortment of main and pilot jets to custom-tune the installation. ■

Shaping a Solo Luggage Rack

Motherwell’s Solo Luggage Rack combines both form and function. Not only does it beautify the rear fender of a motorcycle, it’s a perfect storage platform for everything from daily commutes to longer road trips.

T

he Solo Luggage Rack for Road King Touring models is one of Motherwell’s strongest sellers. Although its appearance is simple aesthetically, company founder Kelly Motherwell says you could not begin to imagine the engineering work that has gone into creating this product. It was designed back in 1996, when he was a small struggling manufacturer with a budget that did not allow for fancy computers or high-priced equipment. “The creation of this luggage rack was challenging,” Kelly recalls. “Just imagine having to manually bend and form steel into shapes, throwing everything away time after time until you found perfection! However, when you have a passion for what you do, and you believe your idea will make a difference for other motorcycle enthusiasts, it sure is rewarding when your dream comes to life and other people like it just as much as you do!” Being a part of the motorcycle industry was a dream come true for Kelly. He has always had a passion for motorcycles and picked up his first Harley-Davidson FXR in 1985 when he was just 22 years old, during a fly-and-ride to the Harley-Davison factory in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Kelly says, “Reflecting on that trip, and the beautiful long ride home, I now know it is what shaped what became a lifelong passion for me.” As a Journeyman Welder/Fabricator by trade, Kelly’s interest in motorcycles naturally extended into designing his

Engineered Elegance

own products, and it seemed like overnight he made the transition to manufacturing as a career. The Solo Luggage Rack was more than just a Motherwell product. For Kelly, it was a practical piece that he needed himself. As a young biker, Kelly says he always knew there was a better way for hauling cargo, whether for a short ride or a road trip. “My Solo Luggage Rack creation sure did the trick, and the best part was knowing that the rack beautified the back end of my ride when nothing was on it,” he says. You can distinctively tell a Motherwell rack from a distance. The shape of the luggage rack hugs the curve of the fender, making it not only practical, but real eye candy as well. Kelly takes a lot of pride in putting practicality, durability and show-quality finishing into one package. Best of all, the products are made right in America. Today, Motherwell is still a relatively small manufacturer. The Motherwell difference is knowing that the company stands behind its products 100 percent, and if there is a problem or concern with a product, they will always make it right. If dealers or customers have any questions at all, Motherwell is just a phone call away and ready to chat. “After all,” says Kelly, “at Motherwell we are ‘behind you all the way!’” ■

Added Strength, Better Function

A

new design isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. A case in point could be the chain-drive clutch baskets on 2007 through 2021 Big Twin Harley-Davidsons. Granted, in many instances those baskets work fine. But when they need replacement, as they will, there’s a stronger, virtually bulletproof option available and Belt Drives, Ltd., BDL, has it.

BDL’s replacement chain-drive clutch baskets are built tough, and designed to serve as an upgrade over the stock HarleyDavidson part.

First of all, the BDL replacement/upgrade basket is machined from tough, billet aluminum. It’s available with the chain sprocket cut into the billet basket, and with an ultra-strong BDL SG-4 ring gear included. The new BDL basket can also be ordered bare allowing the OEM chain sprocket and ring gear to be removed from the old Harley basket and bolted onto the new BDL.

HAND GRIPS

Long Distance Comfort Grips Made to Fight Fatigue Avon Grips manufactures its Air Cushion grips using a special mold that creates air pockets within the grip. These pockets help dampen vibration to a rider’s hands.

P

erformance Baggers are fueling a large segment of the Harley-Davidson Touring market today. Clearly, the need for speed steers the Touring ranks, and Bagger owners today are building some interesting bikes that blend high performance with long-distance riding. And therein lies the problem – high-performance engines generally work against creating a high comfort factor. The main culprit is vibration that can find its way into the motorcycle’s hand grips.

Avon Grips has a solution – Air Cushion grips, a design that features air pockets within the grips themselves to help minimize tingle, a major cause of hand fatigue during long rides. As with all Avon Grips, the Air Cushion is made of a special blend of soft, yet durable, Kraton Rubber that’s injection molded using a special core bar mold that is configured to create actual air pockets within the hand grip itself. These air pockets dampen vibration to the rider’s hands, helping reduce fatigue during long rides. Air Cushion grips come in two styles – chrome and black anodized. They fit most Harley-Davidson models that use either push/pull throttles or throttle-by-wire. Through years of product development Avon Grips has worked closely with Harley enthusiasts to create unique and model-specific hand grips for their bikes. As with all Avon Grips, the Air Cushion is made in the USA at the company’s 45,000-square-foot facility in Kingwood, Texas. ■

Performance Pads for Indian Models

I

ndian Motorcycle riders are a diverse group. A Scout rider is likely different than someone on a Chieftain, and an FTR rider won’t have the same priorities as someone on a Challenger. They all might have bought an Indian but from there went their separate ways. One thing brings them together, though – the importance of strong, reliable, long-lasting brakes. That’s as true for a Scout rider as it is for anyone on a Chieftain or FTR, and DP Brakes has upgraded brake pads for them all. DP’s sintered-metallic pads can give Indian riders the performance braking their bikes need. Easily installed and always affordable, it’s an upgrade available in a couple levels. There are DP Standards and for sport-oriented riders there are the high-friction SDP pads. DP Standards – a popular choice – deliver the strong, clean, quiet and fade-free performance Indian riders want. The braking is dust-free, squeal-free and, with ceramic heat shields on the backing plates, fade-free.

Whether they’re running DP Standards or SDP pads, your Indian Motorcycle riding customer will get a DP Brakesinspired brake performance upgrade.

Most importantly, stopping distances get shorter, feel becomes way more controlled and the service life can be up to three times longer than OE. For aggressive, sport-oriented riders there are the SDP pads. Coming with all the clean, quiet, long-life attributes of the DP Standards, the SDP’s chart-topping HH+ frictionmaterial gives these pads an even stronger initial bite followed with consistently powerful, controllable braking all with low lever effort. ■

Heavy-Duty Charging System Components

righter lights, better sound systems and electronic accessories are all things that many riders are quick to add to their rides, while maintenance and functional items are sometimes overlooked. A great example is the charging system, which rarely gets the credit or attention it deserves. Simultaneously keeping the bike running, the battery charged and all the creature comforts and trick accessories functioning is handled by the charging system. While your customers may take it for granted, the crew at ACCEL demonstrates its importance with the company’s high-quality electrical components. As the power-generator of the system, ACCEL motorcycle stators are a heavy-duty upgrade from OEM and are precision machine-wound for maximum output and dependability. Additionally, a high temperature coating maintains isolation of the pure copper windings from potential grounding sources.

ACCEL’s high-quality stators and regulators are two great upgrades for a Harley-Davidson’s stock electrical charging system.

The power produced by the stator is transferred to the regulator to regulate voltage for proper charging. It protects against overcharging and the potential damages of too much voltage, which are typically worse than too little. ACCEL’s electronic voltage regulators achieve this with the same heavy-duty capability as their stators. These units are built with solid-state circuitry for consistent and reliable voltage regulation, and do not require re-wiring or special mounting. Available for a broad range of Harley-Davidson applications, your customers can ride more and worry less with ACCEL’s limited lifetime warranty on their stators and regulators. ■

Upgrades for Snappier Response

H

arley-Davidson owners are always looking for ways to improve their bikes’ performance. One consideration for Twin Cam owners is KB Piston’s Super Duty pistons that feature exclusive Line2Line Abradable Coating for optimum piston skirt clearance and ring seal. Drag Specialties offers standard and overbore sized KB Super Duty piston kits for specific engines including 103-inch, 110-inch and 117-inch displacements. The 110-inch kits, in particular, are available in standard bore (4.000) and over bore (4.010) sizes, making them especially popular with base and CVO Screamin’ Eagle 110inch owners. In stock trim the base 110-inch engine has 9.15:1 or 9.5:1 (depending on year and model) compression ratio. That’s suitable, but KB’s Super Duty pistons bump that figure to 10:1, and every Harley owner knows that a higher compression ratio means snappier engine response at lower engine rpm. This is a simple parts swap and there’s no modifications required for factory 110-inch engines. The 110’s higher compression ratio is traced to the piston’s reconfigured dome; the KB Super Duty has a -5.1cc dome

The Enduring Popularity of a Classic Seat

LePera’s classic Cherokee is as stylish and comfortable now as it was when company founder Bob LePera Sr. designed it back in the 1970s.

T

here are a number of ways to describe the Cherokee seat by LePera Motorcycle Seats. Bobbed and chopped, King/Queen style, and classic are among the options. There’s another word that fits the Cherokee, too – original. If the Cherokee looks like a traditional design from the 1970s, that’s because it is. Company founder Bob LePera, Sr. designed the Cherokee himself, and it was one of the first seats that LePera offered when the company began in 1972. Today, there are Cherokee fitments for a number of Harley-Davidson models, including XL, Dyna, FXST, Bagger, FXR, and most Milwaukee-Eight bikes.

The Cherokee’s deep driver seating area provides ample lower back support. The high-density molded Marathon foam inside has been specially designed to provide a comfortable ride all day long, while also giving each seat its unique shape. The wide seating areas for both the driver and passenger make the Cherokee even more of a plush ride. Each Cherokee seat is double-stitched with a bonded polyester thread for maximum durability, and the available finishes for the sturdy black leatherlook covers include smooth, pleated and diamond. Underneath the classic styling of the Cherokee seat is the classic construction method that has been a mark of the family-owned LePera brand since the beginning. The steel baseplate ensures a perfect fit on the bike and provides natural dampening. The bottom of the baseplate is carpeted to protect the bike frame and to provide the perfect finishing touch. ■

Premium Sound for Older Bikes bolt inside the fairing for a clean look. The amps provide a total of 425 Watts, which is enough power to sound great without overwhelming the bike’s charging system.

Hogtunes has packaged its premium audio components into the Ultra 6-Pack XL Kit for 2005-13 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classics, offering premium sound for older bikes.

The four XL speakers are the premium option from Hogtunes, with features like carbon fiber woofer cones, oversized magnets, titanium impregnated tweeters, and studio-grade crossover. In fact, these are like the Wild Boar Audio speakers, but specifically for older bikes. lder bikes deserve nice things, too. In fact, an older V-Twin that is less expensive and easier to work on than a newer model is the perfect starting point for a customized bike, including a great audio system. Now, Hogtunes has packaged its premium audio components into the Ultra 6-Pack XL Kit for 2005-13 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classics.

As expected from a Hogtunes kit, everything needed for this plug-and-play installation is included in the box, right down to the zip ties. Metal mesh grills are even included for riders who want to add style to the front speakers.

High-Tech Brake Rotors with Dramatic Styling

S

cience meets style with the new CUBIQ® rotors from Galfer. Designed for optimal braking performance, these rotors fit almost all HarleyDavidson applications.

The dramatic hexagon styling of the CUBIQ rotor, which resembles the crystalline structure of a steel molecule, isn’t just for looks. Using the latest technology, Galfer engineers created a rotor design with an ideal mass-heat dissipation ratio to enhance cooling. The company says it is the lightest high-performing rotor it has ever made. The Galfer CUBIQ rotor is the next evolutionary step for the company’s legendary WAVE® rotor, and it was made with modern V-Twins in mind. The V-Twin market has seen a lot of growth in recent years in terms of bike size as well as performance capabilities. The increased get-up-and-go requires a brake rotor that is equally capable. The CUBIQ’s outstanding cooling properties and reduced weight compared to OEM rotors result in a high-performance brake rotor that stops precisely and consistently, while also improving maneuverability. The

Galfer’s dramatically styled CUBIQ rotors are designed for optimal performance and a unique look. They pair well with the company’s HH sintered brake pads.

CUBIQ rotors are laser cut from a proprietary alloy of unrecycled 420 stainless steel, and parallel double disc ground to ensure absolute precision. Galfer’s CUBIQ rotors pair well with Galfer HH sintered brake pads for a complete performance braking setup. Additionally, Galfer offers OEM replacement rotors as well as 12½-inch oversized and 13-inch super oversized rotors. Race fans can expect to see the Galfer oversize rotors on bikes competing in the new Drag Specialties Bagger Racing League. ■
