dumb idea that was, and that Baggers had no place on real racetracks. I found myself replying to many of those posts that if you didn’t own a Harley or Indian motorcycle you wouldn’t understand this – just follow the money of Bagger owners and that segment of the aftermarket.
n early 2020, word started spreading on social media about some preliminary plans for an event to be added at MotoAmerica’s annual Superbike race weekend at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA. Rob Buydos, for many years the voice of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited at their events, was in fact organizing the first ever roadrace for Performance Baggers. Rob had been recruiting various Drag Specialties vendors to build racing versions of the fully faired “Baggers” and bring experienced riders to compete in this historic event.
Due to COVID-19, the premier running of the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers was delayed until October of 2020. Nobody fell in the race, as many expected. Instead, it came off great, reviving the historic “IndianHarley Wars” of years ago. Indian scored the first win, although both brands have had their riders on the top step of podiums ever since.
The first hint of such an event came in late-2019 at the Drag Specialties dealer ride in Tucson. Rob told me and others there that he had already generated some interest with the MotoAmerica race sanctioning organization and he needed to know who would be on board to participate and make this first of its kind event happen.
Despite the early criticism before the Laguna Seca race, the laughter stopped when the post-race YouTube internet viewership of the race went off the charts. More than a million views overall were recorded of the “King of the Baggers Practice,” “King of the Baggers Race,” and “King of the Baggers Highlights” videos, besting videos of any previous MotoAmerica racing event.
What was interesting was that the attendees of the Drag ride, many who were manufacturers of performance products for Big Twin Harleys, were easily sold by Rob on the “opportunity” to be involved in a real roadrace and claim top honors as builder of the fastest Bagger in the sport. Everyone wanted in.
Bagger racing has expanded rapidly and is here to stay. MotoAmerica ran three Bagger races in 2021, then things really exploded. With the support of Drag Specialties, the addition of Mission Foods as a title sponsor and TV coverage on Fox Network, MotoAmerica doubled to a six-race Bagger series in 2022. Rob Buydos went his own way and founded the Bagger Racing League (BRL). He held two races in 2021, then expanded to a four-race series in 2022.
Next, a meeting was held in Newport Beach, California just after New Year’s Day in 2020 and all the necessary “players” were there. Buydos first confirmed that Fred Fox would attend, knowing full well that if he had Fred’s support, the others would fight for a place in line. Representatives of MotoAmerica and over a dozen prospective participants also turned out, as did Yours Truly serving as the official note-taker and soon-to-be information liaison between Buydos, Drag Specialties, and MotoAmerica.
We have two Bagger races to report in this issue: the last Bagger race of the MotoAmerica season at Millville, New Jersey as well as the season finale of the Bagger Racing League at Daytona Beach, Florida. Be sure to check them both to see who became the champions of 2022. ■
As soon as the announcement was made to the public about the inaugural Drag Specialties King of the Baggers race, it seemed that for every posting on Facebook in support, there were at least two critics saying what a

n the two years since Bagger Racing League’s Rob Buydos first envisioned the concept of racing Bagger style motorcycles at iconic roadrace courses, the idea has grown from a curious niche pursuit to a full-fledged competitive endeavor embraced by passionate fans, and a very determined aftermarket industry. With the BRL’s second full season now in the history books, the Bagger racing phenomenon is on a raucous roll. When the 2022 Drag Specialties Battle of the Baggers presented by Custom Dynamics wrapped up at Daytona International Speedway October 15–16, it was bolstered by fan engagement, team enthusiasm, sponsor support, and a fierce competitive spirit.

The 2022 season started with the Carnival of Speed exhibition at Willow Springs Raceway in April in Rosamond, California. Round 1 competition commenced at Utah Motorsports Campus in May, followed by a double-header match-up at the Milwaukee Mile Speedway during Harley-Davidson’s homecoming weekend. The final race at Daytona International Speedway during Biketoberfest was capped by the hand-over of Number 1 plates to new season champions. “It was very rewarding passing out the 2022 championship Number 1 plates, knowing the hard work of the BRL staff and sponsors,” Buydos said. “My vision of a Harley-Davidson vs. Indian road race series was now a permanent segment of the V-twin world.”

However, before that could happen, Round 4 had to get going. Battle of the Baggers racing at Daytona was part of the CCS/ASRA 39th Annual Race of Champions. After practice and qualifying on Friday, Saturday was race day. That’s when Benny Carlson of Suburban Motors HarleyDavidson took an early lead in the Cobra ATU class, followed by Josh Baird (Indian Motorcycle Charlotte) in second and Kory Cowen (Alloy Art), whose third-place finish was enough to seal the class championship. The F/S Cup was a scramble that saw Benny Carlson, who had shift linkage trouble, chasing but failing to catch Cory West (Saddlemen/Lloydz Garage/Indian of Charlotte and St. Paul). Josh Baird finished third. The Metzeler Pro Stock was a spirited bout won by Trask rider Gunnar Ouellette, followed by Chris Rivas (Bassani Xhaust) in second and Steve Chamberlain third. Class leader Arnie Wells (Grand Teton Harley-Davidson) finished last, but that didn’t keep him from winning the season’s number 1 plate in the class. Race officials chose to combine the NAMZ Big Twins and ICON Lite Weight Twins in one race as two waves. Cody Gilmore (Slyfox/Suburban Harley-Davidson) took first in the Lite Weights with Dillon Wall second and Ken McAdam third. The only woman rider on the grid, Patricia Fernandez (Saddlemen/Lloydz Garage/Indian of Charlotte and St. Paul), came in first in the NAMZ Big Twin, also sealing the Number 1 plate in the class, followed by Robert Parker (Shredder Bob Racing) and Charles Condit, respectively. Her assessment? “There’s no force stronger than a determined woman,” Fernandez said. For the last match-up in the Premier Class – the Custom Dynamics Bagger GP class – drama ruled as defending champ, Trask Performance rider Shane Narbonne had to start the race

on Row 2 due to problems in Qualifying. Among those ahead of him were 4-time Daytona 200 winner Danny Eslick (Nowaskey Performance), Benny Carlson, Cory West and 2016 Daytona 200 winner Michael Barnes (Hoban Brothers/ Darkhorse Crankworks) in the final race of his career – fittingly at DIS where he’d raced since the 1980s. Barnes led initially, posting the fastest lap of the race, before both he and Carlson experienced mechanical hiccups that slowed them down. That opened the way for Narbonne to power his way up front and pull away from the pack. A battle for second ensued between West and Eslick. In the end, Eslick took second by a hair-raising .001-second over West. This put Narbonne at the top of the podium not only for the class in Round 4 but for the Championship as well. (See sidebar for final season standings.)

Barnes’ fourth place finish was roundly cheered by all, as West, Eslick and Narbonne welcomed him to join them on the podium. It was an emotional moment for Barnes as he thanked fans, family and sponsors for a lifetime of support and experiences, one final time. to support the Saddlemen team and says the partnership not only scratches that racing itch, but also has great marketing benefits. “At BRL we have the opportunity to win more, and when people see pictures of our riders on the podium, that matters,” Sutherland said. “BRL gives smaller teams without the big factory budgets a chance to run up front and have success.” Yes, the league is fiercely competitive on the track, but holistically the vibe is all about camaraderie and doing what you love with like-minded people. Mees Successfully Defends His Crown at Volusia Half-Mile Finale II

rag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees put the finishing touches on his successful title defense as a thrilling 2022 Progressive American Flat Track season came to its conclusion at the Mission Volusia Half-Mile Finale II in October at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida.
The defending Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle king was well positioned to retain the #1 plate after outdueling his title rivals. As a result, he only needed to avoid catastrophe in order to add his seventh career premier-class crown to his already incredible résumé.
Part # 2130-0349
2016 - Up
That near catastrophe came in the Semi when Mees made the save of the season – perhaps the save of his career – after hitting a bump and going airborne and sideways with his front wheel loft high in the air. Somehow, he not only stayed up on two wheels but made a pass to take the checkered flag first. With that drama out of the way, Mees basically just had to show up for the Main to win the title. Instead, he chose to fight, executing passes on the likes of Jarod Vanderkooi and rookie hero Dallas Danielsto finish on the podium in third.

The Indian Motorcycle backed by Progressive was strong all year long. My team did a phenomenal job. I was able to go out there and race hard. I’ll be honest, I really wanted to cap off the year with a win.” ■

Provisional 2023 Progressive American Flat Track Schedule
Quality A Cables, Trusted Name
MA Pro Racing announced today an 18-round provisional schedule for the 2023 Progressive American Flat Track season boasting venues historic and new and featuring an impressive balance in terms of its blend of disciplines, geography and pacing.
Immediately noticeable is a more compact time frame over which the title fights will be waged, fitting all 18 rounds in between the return to Daytona International Speedway for a doubleheader during Daytona Bike Week in early March and an epic Labor Day Weekend doubleheader season finale at the series’ crown jewel, the Springfield Mile, in early September. The overall result is a significantly more consistent slate and superior momentum, with no more than three weeks between any two rounds, a gap which occurs just twice all season long.
OE Quality, High-Performance Black Vinyl or Stainless-Steel Braided cables - including extended lengths. See your Drag Specialties sales rep for more information FROM OUR GARAGE TO YOURS
DRAGSPECIALTIES.COM
Featuring five Miles, five Half-Miles, four Short Tracks, three TTs, (and one event still to be announced), the ’23 schedule is also intriguing in the cadence of events. The ordering of track types presents increased opportunity for dynamic championship battles, encouraging win streaks and comebacks alike. All four STs take place in the opening six races, while the three TTs will take place in a span of 13 days near the conclusion of the season, with the Half-Miles and Miles nicely divided up throughout the campaign. That balance extends to its geographic reach. Hitting locations on both coasts and numerous points in between, the diversity of locales supports both the sport’s growth and continued strength all across the nation. So too does its mix of historic races, long-time mainstays, returning favorites, and a number of all-new stops, including Senoia, Georgia, Ventura, California, and Bridgeport, New Jersey. The 2023 Progressive AFT schedule will again celebrate the country’s motorcycle rallies and national holidays, holding events as part of Daytona Bike Week, Arizona Bike Week, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, along with races to be held during Mother’s Day weekend, Father’s Day weekend (alongside the Mission Food AMA Flat Track Grand Championship amateur nationals no less), Memorial Day weekend and the aforementioned Labor Day weekend finale. ■

Power Pipes
Bassani Xhaust has been a part of the Performance Bagger scene from the get-go, producing popular exhausts for that new breed of horsepower junkies. It’s new 2:1 exhaust systems for the Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST are built for maximum power gains.
P
erformance V-Twins are all the rage now, which is no surprise to the team at Bassani. The brand has been producing performance pipes for V-Twins for a long time, helping customers get the right blend of style and tuning for their bikes. Bassani has fitments for Harley-Davidson models both old and new, so even bikes that now fall into the vintage category can also be outfitted with an exhaust that boosts power. Whether it’s a 1984 FXRD or the 2022 Low Rider El Diablo, Bassani has a performance pipe for it that is designed for great looks, more power and incredible sound. The Low Rider ST has been a massive hit for Harley-Davidson, which means Bassani exhausts for the model have been popular sellers, as well. The 2:1 Bassani exhaust systems for the Low Rider ST are designed for maximum power gains. The stepped headpipe of each exhaust features the right lengths and diameters to provide a performance boost for both stock bikes as well as engines that have other performance upgrades, making the exhaust extremely versatile. Each Bassani exhaust is made from quality steel sourced from American mills. That quality aspect is an important one – the steel heat-cycles better and provides increased heat protection.
To further increase heat dissipation, the stainless-steel exhausts come with a header heat shield. Systems with chrome, black or black chrome finishes include full-coverage heat shields. The team at Bassani knows that incidents sometimes happen out on the road, especially during high-performance riding. That’s why the exhausts have a modular design. If one section gets damaged after a tip-over, it can simply be swapped out for a new one. There’s no need to replace the entire exhaust, saving the customer a lot of hassle and expense. The baffle and end cap can both be removed for tuning. The baffle is specially designed to produce high output and the kind of aggressive note customers expect from a Bassani exhaust. Other features of the 2:1 exhausts for the Low Rider ST include 18mm O2 bungs for wide band tuners and 12mm adapters. Bassani carries various style and finish options for the Low Rider ST, giving customers the chance to choose the right look to suit their tastes, whether they’re enhancing a stock bike or working on a custom build. Anyone who goes in for a close look will notice the beautiful welding, all done by hand for a pristine craftsman look.

EXHAUST FOR THE LOW RIDER ST One of the exhausts for the Low Rider ST is a 2:1 stainless steel system designed with stepped headers and a 4-inch stainless steel straight housing called the “Super Bike” muffler. The baffle design creates an entirely new sound that is guaranteed to get attention. Another exhaust available for the Low Rider ST is the Ripper 2:1 stainless steel exhaust. This short exhaust really changes the look of the bike while also providing a great sound. The advanced inner collector produces maximum performance gains. Of course, Bassani carries its 2:1 systems for a lot more than just the Low Rider ST. There are pipes designed for the original FXR, Twin Cam Dyna and M-8 Softail models. Even before performance V-Twins were the trend, Bassani was paving the way with its pipes. Never a company to focus on aesthetics alone, Bassani has long been a go-to place for performance exhausts. Word on the Street Before a brand can become as iconic as Bassani, customers have to know it exists in the first place, and Bassani has been coming up with creative guerilla marketing campaigns for years. The earliest focus was on the 2:1 exhausts for Dyna models. Then along came the M-8 Softails and the Low Rider ST. Whatever the model, riders have learned that a Bassani exhaust is the way to get American-made quality and fantastic performance. When it comes to Bassani’s marketing, you can expect everything from parties to partnerships. Pro skateboarder, multi-time X-Games medalist and motorcycle enthusiast Greg Lutzka is often on hand at Bassani events, and he’s the host of many of the brand’s online videos, which capture the excitement of the performance V-Twin scene. A quick YouTube search will turn up great shots of Lutzka jumping over a bike on his skateboard. Stunts like that are routine at Bassani events, which range from parties hosted at the company’s headquarters in Anaheim,
Bassani is legendary for its guerrilla marketing efforts, an approach that includes frequent full-throttle meetups at its headquarters in Anaheim, California.
California, to nights at the local taco shop. While there is plenty to see, including some of the top stunt performers on the West Coast, there is also a lot for riders to do, from participating in crazy contests to winning prizes. Because, in the end, it’s not just about getting the word out – it’s also about showing what real customer appreciation looks like. ■

And then came the race. For the first time in the three-year history of the Mission King of the Baggers class, riders were forced to race the big bikes in the rain. And, race they did. Initially it was Kyle Wyman leading O’Hara with Travis Wyman giving chase. Just when Travis got close enough to make things really interesting, he crashed out of third place.
S&S Cycle/Indian rider Tyler O’Hara is the 2022 MotoAmerica Mission King Of The Baggers. Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle teammates and brothers Travis Wyman and Kyle Wyman rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively.
J
ust in case there wasn’t enough drama in the 2022 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers Championship, Mother Nature decided to get involved in the series finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park in September when she opted to dump rain by the buckets on the track on the outskirts of Millville, New Jersey. Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle’s Travis Wyman led Mission Foods/S&S Cycle/Indian Challenger’s Tyler O’Hara by three points going into the Jersey round and the excitement was building even in practice. The Indian guys kept to them-
For all practical purposes, the title at that point went to O’Hara. But, when it’s pouring, nothing is over until it’s over and O’Hara was riding a bit harder than what seemed to be prudent. In the final laps, the Californian backed off and settled for second place and the championship.
“I just was really relaxed all weekend. Just had to chip away at it. These boys were on it this weekend. I took it one corner at a time, “O’Hara said. “We got a little sporty there. Jumped out of the seat one time and then just kind of backed her down a little bit. To be honest, I had no idea that Travis was out. I didn’t even see my ‘OK’ on the board, and we counted the laps backwards. So, it was just taking it one lap at a time. That was my dream to stand up on top of that podium holding the Number One plate, from the beginning of the year. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and this team.” With Kyle Wyman winning his third win of the season and O’Hara second, third place was a surprise in the form of veteran Michael Barnes, who announced his retirement in the post-race press conference after a 34-year professional career. It was a fitting end to a scintillating season of King of the Baggers racing that saw five different winners in the seven races. In addition to Kyle Wyman’s three wins, O’Hara won once, McWilliams won once, and Fong also won a round as did Travis Wyman.
King of the Baggers competitors at the series finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park faced the added element of rain by the buckets. Kyle Wyman (#1) won his third Mission King Of The Baggers race of the season, but it was Tyler O’Hara (#29) who won the title.

Enhancing the Experience
Performance Packages for Every Rider
When building a Stage 1 Performance kit, a free-flowing air intake is imperative. Vance & Hines has a range of great solutions, including the Falcon and the Insight air cleaners.
I
t only takes one experience behind the handlebars, twisting the throttle to feel the exhilaration of riding a motorcycle and get hooked for life. Terry Vance and Byron Hines were hooked at a young age, leading them to the drag strips and raceways of Southern California more than forty years ago. The two proved to be a performance pair, finding ways to go faster and sharing those innovations with fellow performance-driven riders through the now widely recognized brand, Vance & Hines. Throughout the years, Vance & Hines has always had a focus on racing, gaining experience through performance development with many of the major powerhouses in motorcycle drag racing. This knowledge gained has allowed Vance & Hines to finetune its craft, focusing greatly on polishing the details of the essentials of motorcycle performance. Coined Stage 1 Performance by Vance & Hines, these are the initial, yet critical, areas of performance upgrades: air, fuel and exhaust. Thankfully for your customers Vance & Hines is a one-stop shop for Stage 1 upgrades. Offering head-turning exhaust systems, high-flow air intakes and tuning tools to dial-in ECU calibration specifically for these air-in and air-out upgrades, Vance & Hines has done the homework to create a well-tuned package, so your customers don’t have to. Vance & Hines’ vast array of VO2 Air Intakes are engineered to increase the volume and velocity of air feeding

After modifications to improve air intake, the natural next step is to match that with performance exhaust. Vance & Hines is certainly no stranger to precision crafted exhaust systems, offering a wide of range of styles and finishes to not only fulfill performance needs, but check that style box for your customers at the same time. Riders can choose their level of exhaust package, from slip-on mufflers to performance headers or all the way to complete systems. Much like its VO2 intakes, Vance & Hines’ performance exhaust products feature some of the latest in motorcycle exhaust innovation. Years of racing and performance experience are evident in Vance & Hines’ new PCX Technology that integrates highflow catalysts into some of Vance & Hines’ most popular exhaust system designs, improving low to mid-range torque. This benefit can give your customers more power where they want it, whether it’s offthe-line acceleration or passing on a steep grade. Of course, with this performance comes the deep and powerful rumble VTwin riders know and love.
VANCE & HINES
Oiled-media air filters simultaneously keep air flow maximized while providing high filtration efficiency, protecting precious engine internals from potentially harmful debris. Keeping maintenance convenience in mind, Vance & Hines air filters are also completely washable and built to last, ensuring miles of worry-free service.
Finish off that exhaust system with a set of Vance & Hines Torquer mufflers for a nice dose of improved performance and great sound.
Rounding out that Stage 1 performance trio is Vance & Hines FP4 fuel tuning tool that allows customers to finetune their fuel systems via Bluetooth with a smartphone.
With air induction and exhaust taken care of, that leaves two other components critical to internal combustion: fuel and spark. Modern machines have come a long way since the days of carburation and jetting, now equipped with fuel injection systems designed to optimized performance and efficiency through computer-controlled fuel delivery and ignition timing. However, in stock form, many motorcycles are tuned for OE components. Vance & Hines’ FP4 tuning tool uses modern Bluetooth technology to allow customers to tune their motorcycles via the FP4 app right from their smartphone, giving them access to Vance & Hines’ thorough database of tunes developed on the dyno by in-house tuning experts. Taking the leap into tuning can be intimidating, which is why Vance & Hines made it simple and convenient for
users. With the FP4, they have the ability to choose a preprogrammed tune based on the specific air intake and exhaust components they’re running. With a simple tap, the motorcycle’s ECM will then be optimized to properly leverage the intended performance gains of their hard part components. With air, fuel and exhaust optimized for a complete Stage 1 performance package from Vance & Hines, riders are taking a big step in improving the performance base of their motorcycle. Whether they plan to keep their ride as a fun cruiser or continue to a complete engine build, Vance & Hines is ready to ride with them. ■

I
t’s often said that for a business to succeed, timing is everything. Perhaps, but hard work, savvy decision making, a strong and dedicated staff and total commitment also play crucial roles in determining if a company’s spreadsheet shows more black than red at the end of a day. Based on longevity alone, Klock Werks has enjoyed all of those attributes, and more. But that element of time remains a factor, too, and after 25 years in business it’s clear that timing has been a blessing for this custom motorcycle parts company based in Mitchell, South Dakota. It began when Brian Klock first opened his shop doors as a fledging custom-bike builder, specializing in Sportsters for local bike enthusiasts. “Not many people in this area could afford a Big Twin, so I turned my attention to building custom Sportsters,” recalls Klock. Then in 2004 Klock built a game-changer Twin Cam bobber known as “Cherry Bomb.” A short time later Drag Specialties approached Klock about building a custom Shovelhead for the 2006 FatBook cover. “I’d never built a Shovel in my life,” Klock confesses today. However, by incorporating his signature clean styling into the project, the bike appeared on the cover

alongside another low-slung custom built by the late Ron “Tank” Ewsichek. “It was the first time that Drag put two bikes on the same cover,” notes Klock. Certainly, good timing for both builders. Later that year the time was right for another Klock custom, this time for Discovery Channel’s Biker Build-Off. “Probably the highlight of our business,” Klock said about that experience. Team Klock Werks entry was a highhorsepower custom Bagger with carbon fiber wheels, and performance brakes and suspension. That Bagger won, and Klock reminds us with a bit of emotion and glee in his voice, “The only Bagger ever to be built for the series!” Within the following year, Baggers ruled the roost at bike shows across the nation. Clearly, the clock was ticking in Klock’s favor again. Then, about that same time, the young man from South Dakota set his sights on the Bonneville Salt Flats for some land speed racing. Eventually Klock’s takeaway was several land speed records – with a Bagger no less!. Klock also discovered something about a Bagger’s questionable aerodynamics, prompting Klock Werks to develop a new product. That, of course, became the Flare Windshield™. After sketching a windshield design to fit a Bagger, Klock

Werks set off for North Carolina to test it in the A2 wind tunnel that NASCAR race teams use to sort out their car’s aerodynamics. Thanks to a strategically shaped flip at the windshield’s top edge, and hips on the sides to deflect air up and around the rider and passenger, the Flare Windshield offers features not found on standard windshields. Drag Specialties immediately got on board to distribute the Flare Windshield, placing an order, so Klock Werks filled the order. In no time Drag Specialties sold out to dealers. Suddenly time became a crucial commodity, as the small but efficient shop in Mitchell had to burn midnight oil to keep up with growing demand. The parts business was overwhelming the custom bikes and service portion at Klock Werks, and they experienced 650 percent growth that explosive year. Klock Werks caught up with that demand, and to this day the Flare Windshield remains an integral and leading product within the Bagger and touring bike market. Even so, it was time for destiny to play a role once again in Klock Werks’ growth, leading to more new products for the Bagger community. Chief among them were stylish e-coated and stamped steel custom fenders and handlebars, all distributed through Drag Specialties. In 2016, Indian Motorcycle and Jack Daniels commissioned Brian to design a limited-edition bike to celebrate 150 years of Jack Daniel’s Whiskey. The 150 Springfield and Vintage models sold out in less than 8 hours. That series is now in its sixth year and the Jack Daniel’s Rye Challenger sold 107 motorcycles this year in 45 seconds.
Brian Klock and his World’s Fastest Bagger, one of the bikes that put Klock Werks at the forefront of V-Twin builders. His effort at Bonneville also led to the development of the Flare Windshield.
Klock Werks recently acquired all rights to the iOmounts® system line of magnetic phone mounts for motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, golf carts, trucks, cars – you name it – there’s a phone mount for just about anything that’s mobile or stationary. The phone mounts are listed in the FatBook, and this new product range prompted Klock Werks to expand its warehouse facility to include another building across the street from the company’s long-time main headquarters

in Mitchell. That building itself was damaged during a severe flood in 2019. It underwent a complete renovation that was completed in time to expand and include the new magnetic phone mount products. With 25 years in the books, and many more planned for the future, Klock Werks is charging forth with an exciting and diverse product line and full head of steam. Considering all that’s happened with the company, Klock said it was time to recognize everyone who has helped build the Klock Werks brand. “It takes a team to win the Super Bowl, and part-time, full-time and friends have built this brand. My wife Vanessa has been key to our growth, spearheading acquisitions, communication and finances,” Brian said. “So many of our long-term employees stepping into new leadership roles has been pivotal to our success from the beginning, and especially after the 2019 flood. “It’s rewarding to watch their talents shine for the brand and for the team. Our goal now is to flip that 25 (years) to be 52 (years) of doing business.” ■

Moonshine Harley-Davidson: Franklin, Tennessee Performance-Minded Diamond Dealer
Owner Jamie Lima (right) talks with customer Curtis Hoke about the 2020 HarleyDavidson Road King Special the dealership built for him. After Moonshine’s techs got finished with it, it laid down 181 horsepower and 164 foot-pounds of torque.
W
hen much of the nation’s economy remained hamstrung by the two-year COVID-19 pandemic, innovative motorcycle dealers such as Moonshine Harley-Davidson in Franklin, Tennessee used the opportunity to grow in terms of sales volume and profits. In fact, the Harley-Davidson dealership instituted some unique business practices that elevated it to become a Drag Specialties Diamond Dealer in 2021. That plan actually began to take shape in 2015 when Jamie Lima became an ownership partner of Moonshine Harley-Davidson with Greg Cook. At the time it was known as Harley-Davidson of Cool Springs. Eventually, Lima became the sole owner and changed the dealership’s name to Moonshine Harley-Davidson, a moniker more befitting the shop’s rebellious Southern roots and heritage. It was time to spike the punch bowl. Along with the name change, Lima instituted a new mission statement, which included a product that Harley-Davidson enthusiasts from time immemorial have

demanded – high-performance (yet very street-friendly) engines for their customers’ motorcycles, bought new or used. In this case, Lima envisioned complete, turnkey high-performance engine kits that could be packaged with a bike as a finished and complete purchase, or as an engine upgrade to an existing bike. It would assume a similar business relationship that performance-based auto dealers practiced during the 1960s and ’70s with their high-performance cars. “Hiring the right people, and a lot of hard work, played a big role in our growth as a performance Harley-Davidson dealer,” Lima said. Among those “right people” was the hiring of Mike Van Orden, a master tuner with plenty of experience, to run the dealership’s in-house enginebuilding shop, an integral part of the dealership’s business profile. Van Orden would also be responsible for training new technicians as they hired them. Today Moonshine Harley-Davidson has six master technicians working in the modern service department, so now that program is moving along smoothly and on schedule.

Owner Jamie Lima can be seen on Moonshine Harley-Davidson’s popular YouTube channel offering practical, yet detailed, engine building advice. The channel is home to hundreds of videos covering the store’s proprietary parts, as well as those from a host of aftermarket manufacturers.
By 2017 the dealership’s engine-building program was taking shape. At about that same time the Harley-Davidson Motor Company released its all-new Milwaukee-Eight engine and platform. Timing, as they say, is everything, and the new M-8 was the perfect fit for Moonshine Harley-Davidson. Clearly, the new M-8 engine seemed to check all the right boxes, becoming the performance motor that fit Moonshine Harley’s redefined mission statement. Lima uses another automotive analogy to compare the new M-8 to the old Twin Cam that it replaced. “The Twin Cam is a Small Block,” he said, referencing Chevrolet’s original V-8 automobile engine that helped set GM as a player in automotive’s performance market during the 1950s. “The M-8 is like a Big Block,” he added, using another term for Chevy’s original 427 cubic-inch “rat motor” V-8 of the 1960s. An engine, by the way, that to this day is legendary among automotive enthusiasts. Lima’s comparison shouldn’t surprise anyone given he learned about high-performance engine building and

tuning from his dad who ran a small business in Florida that put old clunker cars back on the road as high-performance asphalt burners. Replacement small-block and big-block engines were among his favorite transplant engines. “He used a lot of nitrous oxide on many of those cars, too,” states Jamie with a bit of affection and nostalgia in his voice. The engines that his father built were solid and known for their reliability, too. Moreover, the new M-8 helped Moonshine HarleyDavidson expand its mission statement to boost sales by offering performance engine kits for Harley-Davidson’s new Big Twins. “No other Harley-Davidson shop was ahead of us in terms of tuning M-8 engines when we got moving,” he said. “We all shared the same learning curve.” Simply, the M-8 was a new design essentially foreign to everyone, posing as a new frontier for engine tuners to probe and explore for boosting performance without losing sight of the important reliability factor. Those new “big block” Harley-Davidson engines were just what Jamie and his speed associates at Moonshine

Harley-Davidson needed to continue their trek towards attaining that Diamond Dealer status. After all, many of the high-performance parts needed for an M-8 performanceengine build are found in the pages of the FatBook. Perhaps Moonshine Harley-Davidson’s biggest leap forward occurred when new recruits Nick Zinola and Aaron Staudinger joined the crew to help with a new YouTube project that became known as the M-8 Cam Shootout. As the name suggests, the Moonshine Harley-Davidson team took every performance camshaft grind available at the time for the new M-8 engine, testing each one on the
dynamometer before posting their results on YouTube for M-8 owners the world over to see. “Everyone was trying to figure out which cam they should use on their new M-8 engines. These videos helped answer that question,” Lima said. The YouTube exposure also helped solidify Moonshine Harley-Davidson’s position as a go-to source for hopping up motorcycle engines among the growing cadre of hardcore M-8 owners. More helpful YouTube videos from Moonshine Harley-Davidson have followed, and continue to show up under the dealership’s YouTube channel. Over time, Moonshine Harley-Davidson has worked with various vendors to produce its own home-grown highperformance M-8 engines for customers. For instance, companies such as S&S Cycle, Feuling Parts and others supply components for Moonshine Harley-Davidson proprietary performance engine kits that are tailored specifically for individual customers. The store’s most popular engine kits include displacements ranging from 128 cubic inches to 131, 135, 139 and 143 cubic inches respectively.
Moonshine Harley-Davidson works closely with such companies as Feuling Parts and S&S Cycle for its high-performance V-Twin offerings.
“Every motor we build has at least one part from Drag Specialties,” Lima pointed out. Even the Moonshine Horsepower proprietary Monster Heads – specially cast M-8 cylinder heads finished with square ports and 2.5mm oversized valves and other trick features suitable for big-inch engines — rely on various components such as gaskets, cams, pistons and big-bore kits from Drag Specialties for completion. And, like most other performance-focused HarleyDavidson dealers, Moonshine Harley-Davidson is tapping into the Bagger racing community, further pushing the envelope for even more performance and reliability gains for its M-8-based engine projects.
Jordan Huerta (middle) and Sid Caballero (bottom) are just two of Moonshine Harley-Davidson’s skilled horsepower technicians.
“It’s catapulted the performance Bagger scene a lot,” noted Jamie about the Bagger Racing League and the King of the Baggers series that the market has embraced. “The technology has spilled over into the performance Bagger community. Any company in the Bagger industry benefits from the [Bagger] racing, that’s for sure.” In the meantime, Moonshine Harley-Davidson remains focused on growing its sales, and that means growth in terms of dealership space, too. “Right now our dealership is 20,000 square feet,” Lima said. “We need a 50,000 square-foot facility.” That means adding on, or opening up, another dealership. Both are options that remain on the table, he added. Perhaps Moonshine Harley-Davidson’s Drag sales rep, Jim McGlynn, summed it up best when he said, “What other dealerships shy away from, Moonshine Harley-Davidson boldly takes on and it’s evident in their success.” That “success,” he added, was becoming a Drag Specialties Diamond Dealer for two years in a row – and counting. ■

he year was 1982, and Harley-Davidson had just released its now iconic FXR platform. That same year, a suspension shop in Southern California opened its doors and began offering hand-built custom shocks. That shop was Progressive Suspension, and what began as a small business with a short list of products has expanded into one of the industry’s largest and well-respected suspension companies. Four decades after it all started, Progressive Suspension still stands on a foundation of innovation, performance, and quality.

Slyfox supplied the triple clamp and front fender, S&S Cycle was called on for the cam chest kit, Vance & Hines hooked it up with the Hi-Output RR exhaust, and Kris Echert and Heath Pinter came through with the gorgeous black, gray, and red
In honor of its 40th anniversary, Progressive Suspension built a custom bike inspired by the Harley-Davidson FXR platform that launched the same year the company did. Built around a 2020 Road Glide, the bike features a set of 13-inch 990 Series shocks and a set of Progressive fork springs.
Progressive Suspension has always had a strong focus on the V-Twin market, and to celebrate the brand’s 40th year of operation, it built a motorcycle that bonds its suspension innovations with the style of Progressive’s customer base. Inspired by the FXR platform that was launched the same year that Progressive came into existence, the team started with a 2020 Road Glide FLTRX. The bike’s Touring chassis draws heavily on the style originally created by the FXR frame, and serves as the focal piece for the build. Chassis improvements are Progressive’s bread and butter, so a set of 13-inch 990 Series shocks were installed out back, with the remote reservoirs – a technology unheard of in the V-Twin world in 1982 and something Progressive helped usher into the market – conspicuously mounted outboard the custom carbon rear fender from Saddlemen. For the forks – which feature billet 49mm lower fork legs from sister company Performance Machine – Progressive slid in a set of its fork springs and poured in its Heavy-

custom paint. Inspired by the iconic FXR, Progressive’s 40th-anniversary Road Glide build uses modern technology and performance parts to pay homage to the past. While it’s important to honor your heritage, Progressive Suspension’s focus is on the future. Four decades in, Progressive is still pioneering new tech, and its latest patented product, Frequency Sensing Technology (FST), is designed to effectively smooth out the road. Available in the 944 and 444 Series shocks, and the 49mm Monotube fork kits, FST incorporates frequency sensitive fluid circuit in addition to Progressive’s deflective-disc valving and bleed circuits. FST greatly improves chassis stability while simultaneously delivering a more comfortable ride quality that excels in smoothing out road noise, braking bumps, weather cracks, and expansion joints. ■

Ready for Wrapping Holiday Gifts for Riders
T
he holiday season is right around the corner, which means customers are going to be putting motorcycle parts on their wish lists. Dealers can get ready for shoppers coming in the door looking for a gift for the motorcycle enthusiast in their life by stocking up on parts from Custom Dynamics. There are plenty of top sellers at Custom Dynamics that will fit perfectly in a gift box. And, since items like these lights, bezels and horns are available for a wide range of model fitments, they’re versatile items for dealers to have on hand. The LED Road Flare Safety Light is a great item to tuck into any rider’s stocking. Small and compact, these emergency strobes can be kept right on the parts counter by the register, so customers can easily add one to their purchase. Each LED safety light produces a 360-degree beacon of light for ultimate visibility, and it can be used as an emergency road flare or as a flashlight. Riders can choose from alternating red and white flashes, a red strobe, solid red illumination or white for the flashlight mode. A built-in metal hook and a magnet make mounting easy.
Magic Strobes Brake Light Flasher features 10 selectable brake flash patterns from which to choose. They really help amp up visibility to the rear of a bike.
Another great way to amp up visibility is with a Magic Strobes Brake Light Flasher. These popular flashers add a big dose of light to the rear of the bike, and there are 10 selectable brake flash patterns to choose from. There are a lot of plug-and-play fitments for these flashers, which are a great gift for anyone who wants to add some style and brilliance to their bike. Standard lens caps are prone to breaking off at the tabs. Custom Dynamics makes that a problem of the past with ProBEAM Bullet Bezels, which are turn signal lens covers with sturdy metal tabs. Not only will they save riders the headache of replacing plastic lenses, but they make a great little holiday gift, too. Designed for Harley-Davidson models with OEM Bullet Deuce Style turn signals, these bezels add a sleek custom look as well as durability. Some riders want to be both seen and heard. That’s where the ProBEAST Dual Tone Air Horn comes in. These horns are a direct replacement for Harley’s stock horn, but they pack a lot more sound. The dual-tone air horn demands attention with its 104.9db rating – which should definitely make people notice. A heavy-duty metal bracket and ABS cover keep everything secure, and the plug-and-play capability makes the air horn a zero-hassle upgrade in sound. ■

with some marked improvements. Through their extensive R&D efforts, Lyndall has designed the Bow-Tie Cut rotors with additional reliefs for reduced weight, better outgassing and improved brake pressure. By reducing the surface area where the brake pads make contact with the friction ring, clamping power per square inch is increased and braking force improves. Lyndall also makes brake pads, and recommends their Z Pads be used with black or gold rotors to help preserve the appearance. In fact, Lyndall guarantees its rotors for life when used exclusively with Lyndall’s pads, which have been designed to work with the colored rotors’ unique finish. Z Pads are delicate on discs while also offering strong stopping power, solid lever feel, and excellent modulation. Rather than the sintered material commonly found in brake pads, Z Pads utilize an organic compound that’s devoid of abrasive ferrous materials. Instead, Lyndall’s Z Pads rely on a matrix of carbon/aramid fiber and other non-metallic materials, which preserve the rotors’ finish while still generating optimal friction. This organic recipe runs cooler than sintered pads and has an ultra-long service life. On top of that, the friction formula almost eliminates brake dust, so those custom wheels and rotors will remain clean and beautiful. ■

LYNDALL BRAKES

or 25 years, Lyndall Brakes has focused on pioneering performance brake hardware for Harley-Davidsons. The company has invested in innovative materials, mechanical designs and advanced manufacturing methods to bridge the gap between road-racing technology and V-Twin motorcycles. Lyndall got its start by implementing organic carbonKevlar brake compounds and making them mainstream in a world of sintered brake pads. Since then, Lyndall has zeroed in on high-performance brake components for VTwin motorcycles, utilizing carbon-composite materials, isolated-hub technology and, most notably, inventing the patented Lug-Drive floating mechanism. Lyndall’s passion for adapting the most advanced braking technology for street riding, canyon carving, and performance Harley enthusiasts has led to countless trackdays and club-level events. Testing at the track on a variety of Harley platforms in both stock and modified trim allows Lyndall’s engineers and riders to push the limits in order to fully evaluate products and systems.
The culmination of these efforts, including Lyndall’s recent involvement in the King of the Baggers series, is embodied in its latest offering in highperformance brakes for Harley-Davidson Touring models – the new Enforcer one-piece rotor for M-8 touring models.
Lyndall Brakes’ new one-piece

hen Kodlin USA came onto the scene in 2020, most of the parts available from the brand were for Harley-Davidson MilwaukeeEight Softail models. These days, Kodlin USA has expanded to include parts for Touring models, the Sportster S and even the Pan America. But, not surprisingly, the M-8 Softail parts continue to be popular sellers.
With Kodlin’s shock compressor tool, installing the company’s lowering and lift kits is a snap.
Kodlin makes two different lowering kits for M-8 Softail bikes. One kit is for models with a remote pre-load adjuster, while the other is for the models that don’t have a remote pre-load adjuster. Other than that, the lowering kits have a lot in common. Both of them allow the bike to be lowered by as much as 1½ inches, and they come with pre-installed

bearings, so installation is straightforward. And, with the use of the Kodlin shock compression tool, the swap isn’t difficult. For riders who would rather get a boost in height, Kodlin offers two lift kits for the M-8 Softail family of bikes. The standard lift kit that fits most M-8 Softail models will raise the bike by up to 1 inch.
Kodlin’s standard lift kits provides up to 1 inch of rise for most Milwaukee-Eight Softail models.
While great aesthetics are a big part of the Kodlin style, some things are designed solely for making life easier. That’s definitely the case with the Kodlin shock compression tool for M-8 Softails. This tool is designed to make it easy to install Kodlin lowering and lift kits, and to disassemble the M-8 Softail stock shocks for other projects. The shock compression tool is made from durable steel, and it’s one of those “small but mighty” items that any Harley garage should have ready to go.

Poised to Strike! Style, Sound and Power
If your customers want a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note, better style and extra power for their Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight FL models, point them toward S&S Cycle’s Sidewinder exhaust system.
T
hrow a leg over the saddle, flip the side stand up, push the starter, and… Hmmm. That HarleyDavidson Milwaukee-Eight model feels like a proper V-Twin, but where’s the sound? That’s where S&S Cycle comes in with a full lineup of free-flowing mufflers and exhausts, including the Sidewinder system for 2017 2022 Harley Milwaukee-Eight FL models. If your customers want a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note, better style and a little extra power, the Sidewinder is poised to strike. The Sidewinder exhaust bolts right up to Touring models, completely replacing the quiet and restrictive stock exhaust with a better-sounding performance system. To improve cylinder scavenging and broaden the torque curve, the Sidewinder’s stainless-steel head pipes are stepped up twice before merging in a 2½-inch collector. The Sidewinder culminates in a beefy 4½-inch muffler with a billet-aluminum end cap and removable baffle so your customers can tune the sound and backpressure. Other features include a high-flow catalytic convertor of S&S’s own design, plus oxygen-sensor ports and adapters to allow use of stock O2 sensors or aftermarket wideband units. Available in lustrous chrome or durable Guardian Black paint, there’s a finish to match any FL model. If your customers are after two-into-one performance, but want the symmetry of dual mufflers, S&S offers a left-side
Shadow Pipe to complete the look. To make installation even easier (and avoid annoying exhaust leaks), this setup comes with a set of S&S’s tapered exhaust gaskets and fresh flange nuts. The Sidewinder exhaust system is a great mod on its own, but to extract all the power for which S&S is known, your customers should pair it with a Stealth Air Cleaner Kit. This setup comes with a washable and reusable filter element that offers more surface area for a massive increase in airflow over OEM. The radiused inlet of the high-strength polymer back plate and the tapered stinger shape of the top plate streamline airflow into the engine for more power and better throttle response. As with all things S&S, performance takes center stage with the Sidewinder exhaust, particularly when combined with the Stealth Air Cleaner Kit. For example, a 107ci M-8 picks up 5 horsepower at peak, and pushes maximum torque from 98.1 foot-pounds to 103.8. More importantly, the combo boosts torque across the entire rev range. ■

From its humble beginnings in a garage, the company continued to grow and build a reputation for the highquality manufacturing of pistons. In 1930, the company moved to San Leandro, California, where it supplied OEM manufacturers located on the West Coast. UEM continued to grow until the start of World War II. During the war, the company’s emphasis changed. No longer solely a piston manufacturer, UEM started supplying special marine applications for PT boats and some small munitions. HRASHIN Supply is a brand your customers can feel. After all, the California-based company specializes in interface surfaces like handlebars, foot pegs, grips and other points where the rider makes contact with the bike. With that focus in mind, THRASHIN is excited to introduce two new products that can totally change the look and feel of your customers’ 2014 to 2022 Harley-Davidson Road Glides – a new gauge relocation kit and top triple tree. If your customers have installed bar risers that make it hard for them to see their gauges, THRASHIN’s new gauge relocation kit is a clean solution. This rad new setup works with THRASHIN’s existing OG and Holeshot risers (with the appropriate bracket adapter) and allows riders to position their gauges ahead of or behind the risers and adjust the gauge’s angle. That includes a beautiful carbon-fiber gauge backing and precision-machined billet-aluminum gauges faces in anodized black or chrome. The kit also comes with an OE-style harness extender, fresh gauge gaskets and hardware. Next up on the new-release list is a billet top triple tree for the Road Glide. With the new top triple, riders retain full fork-lock functionality thanks to an under-mount location for the (included) fork lock. Better yet, the lock sits behind a discreet spring-loaded access door, so when the key is out the top triple clamp has a clean, keyless appearance. This top triple also provides two locations for riser installation for further fine tuning. There are mounting holes in the stock spot and as well as a set that’s a bit closer to the rider. Bushings aren’t needed when installing risers on this triple since they’re bolted directly to the top triple clamp, leading to better steering feedback and handling. And, since THRASHIN appreciates the details, the company included plates that cover the unused mounting holes so the triple tree’s clean look isn’t compromised.

ustom Cycle Engineering has been through some changes in recent years, including new ownership, but some things always stay the same. Dealers who order Custom Cycle Engineering products can still expect the same American-made quality and craftsmanship that has been at the forefront of the company since its founding more than half a century ago. There is an extensive Custom Cycle Engineering product line in both the FatBook and OldBook. offered while still keeping the family-run atmosphere. But, with Rick’s passing in 2017, it was time for the company to enter a new era. Five miles down the road from Custom Cycle Engineering’s home, Ron Linville was looking for new business opportunities. The chance to have such a well-established brand and shop were too good to pass up, especially when it was so close by. In 2019, Linville took over as the new owner of Custom Cycle Engineering.
Randy Smith founded Custom Cycle Engineering in 1967. He was known as a pioneer in aftermarket Harley parts, and he was a respected custom bike builder, as well. In 1989, Smith sold his interest in the company to brothers Rick and Jim Whitehead.
This isn’t Linville’s first time taking on a new company. More than 20 years ago, he took over Horstman Manufacturing, a well-established company that makes centrifugal clutches for karting. As time went on, Horstman expanded into motorcycles. That led to the opportunity to acquire the Intuitive Racing brand in 2006. Intuitive was already well-known in the sportbike world for its frame sliders, so it made sense to begin producing the Horstman motorcycle clutches under the Intuitive name.
The Whitehead brothers ran Custom Cycle Engineering for decades, continuing to expand the number of products

Oil Cooling Systems for V-Twin Engines
ver the decades of V-Twin performance, engines have grown in displacement and power while maintaining their classic, V-Twin tradition. One thing that’s also grown is the amount of heat these engines generate.

Riders can maximize cooling with PC Racing’s FLO oil filters, introducing another ten-degree drop potential when paired with UltraCool Dual Fan Assisted Oil Coolers, adding up to cooling performance equivalent to that of a fully water-cooled engine.
As many dealers and riders know, most V-Twins are not particularly known for their cool running characteristics, so many have employed oil coolers to help, but often they have trouble keeping up. UltraCool from PC Racing changed that dynamic in 2019 when its third-generation oil coolers were launched.
UltraCool oil coolers are designed to replace existing, factory coolers on Harley EVO and Twin Cam engines. For newer Milwaukee-Eight engines, UltraCool 3.0 oil coolers work as a complement the factory coolers that circulate oil directly to the heads. The UltraCool system adds a side-mount, dual-fan cooler that improves efficiency by
UltraCool’s new 3.0 Dual Fan-Assisted Oil Coolers are a great addition when cooler engine temperatures are needed. There are fitments for a wide range of V-Twin applications.
The product of a decade of continuous product testing and development, UltraCool’s 3.0 Dual Fan-Assisted Oil Coolers offer a nice upgrade in V-Twin cooling capabilities. These breakthrough systems from UltraCool are constructed for long-mileage durability, utilizing highquality materials that include stainless steel nylon coated oil lines with hydraulic AN fittings, IP68 waterproof fans and attractive chrome or black covers. Once a bike’s oil temperature reaches 210 degrees F, a thermal switch triggers dual fans that pull 220 CFM of airflow through UltraCool’s proprietary turbulated heat exchanger that was shown to cool engines’ oil up to fifty degrees in testing. This kind of heat reduction can seriously come in handy for your customers when traveling on crowded roads, sitting at traffic lights, or riding in hot weather conditions under load. They’re also great for Performance Bagger builds and other hot rod applications.

cooling all the engines’ oil and not just what’s circulating in the heads. Because the M-8 is the largest cubic inch, highest horsepower engine from Harley yet, it also tends to produce the most heat, making this additional cooling particularly beneficial. Plus, M-8 riders can achieve the look they want with coolers designed to flow with the look of chopped, or similar, engine guards. Having already been available for a wide range of Harley and Indian engine applications, UltraCool has introduced new lines for 2023 including systems designed specifically for S&S Cycle T-Series engines as well as a complete line of naked coolers which are designed with no covers for an enhanced, performance look. ■

Valve-Train Cover Upgrades
T
hroughout its incredible history of over a century of American motorcycling, Harley-Davidson has introduced several different generations of iconic V-Twin engines. Each of these Americanmade power plants have seen advancements in engine innovation while simultaneously staying true to the Harley roots. JIMS USA knows these engines inside and out and for more than 50 years, the company has applied its precision machining and designing experience to innovative products for the V-Twin space. Years of working with some of the fastest Harley-powered race teams and developing high-performance engines have led to smart products all designed to enhance a Harley rider’s experience. The latest of these products are JIMS’ Milwaukee-Eight lowprofile billet tappet covers and pushrod cover kits.
PARTS & ACCESSORIES
Tapping into Potential
Since the M-8 was introduced roughly five years ago as Harley’s latest engine innovation, the JIMS crew has been identifying potential points of improvement from the rider’s perspective, and developing precision solutions. Through this, the team recognized that OE tappet covers fixed where the base of the pushrods exit the engine case sit oddly high, especially in comparison to the previous generation Twin Cams and beyond. Outside of just looks, this OE tappet cover design can make it difficult to access the adjuster nuts for the pushrods. However, JIMS low-profile tappet covers fix this issue with a design that’s approximately ½-inch lower than stock for much more maintenance-friendly function. Additionally, these tappet covers also add timeless styling to the M-8 engine. With black and chrome finishes available, your customers can truly complement the style of their machine.
JIMS new low-profile billet tappet covers and pushrod cover kits are specially made for the Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engine.
Helping achieve this height difference, JIMS’ low-profile tappet covers were designed to work with OE pushrod covers, or JIMS’ precision billet pushrod covers. Adding JIMS pushrod covers – also available in black and chrome finishes – as a natural upgrade alongside the low-profile tappet covers delivers customers an ultimate valve train cover upgrade package for their M-8 engines. Staying true to JIMS DNA, these low-profile tappet covers and pushrod covers are precision machined right here in the USA from 6061 billet aluminum. JIMS takes pride in its American-made craftsmanship, a true ode to American motorcycling heritage throughout the nation. ■

Belts Built for High-Horsepower Use
I
t’s been more than a year since BDL updated its line of rear-drive belts for Harley-Davidson models, and feedback has been extremely positive among Drag Specialties dealers, the company reports.
Now, BDL has updated its line of belts with a new and stronger rubber compound, known as Gates carbon X7N. Like the Gates carbon X3N material that it replaces, X7N was developed to handle high-horsepower applications, and extend belt life as well. The X7N compound is the same material that HarleyDavidson used on its OEM rear belts, offering high tensile strength. The carbon cord fiber-reinforced tooth surface also extends to the Gates belt’s teeth for high-horsepower applications and improved wear characteristics. Additionally, the belt’s slick treated surface means less wear on the drive pulleys.
To assure flexibility, the belt’s outer surface is ribbed for smooth 180-degree turnabouts on the pulleys. The sum total means increased stability for the belt and better pitch contact between the pulley’s teeth and the belt itself. Keep in mind, though – rear pulleys with more than 35k miles on them should be examined, and replaced if necessary.

The BDL Gates belt’s treated surface also helps protect against humidity to further prolong belt life. Like all BDL products, the X7N belt is made in the U.S.A. BDL’s line of Gates X7N reinforced final belt drives are complemented by a line of primary belt drives that offer similar strength and long-wear reliability. Belts are available in a selection of lengths, widths and tooth-counts. ■

nyone who’s been around motorcycles for a while is likely familiar with SuperTrapp, the distinctive exhaust company with the unique diffuser disc technology that the brand introduced back in 1972. These easily identifiable exhausts have appeared on streetbikes, roadracing machines, flat trackers, and cruisers.
endcap pre-installed, the V5 meets the Forestry Service’s spark-arrestor requirements for off-road adventuring. Based on SuperTrapp’s testing, the V5 is nearly six pounds lighter than the stock muffler assembly, and flows significantly more air than the OEM muffler. That leads to more power and more sound, which of course can be tuned by removing or adding discs to the V5’s end cap. And while the diffuser endcap is a hallmark of the SuperTrapp brand, the company employs more conventional baffle technology when it makes sense. Harley’s 2018 and newer CVO FLH/FLT Touring models are a prime example, as the stock, color-matched heat shields and end caps are a defining feature of the bike. With the Stout slip-on, your customers can get the sound they want and keep their CVO components. The Stout slip-on muffler features a 4-inch chrome-plated body with a 2.5-inch high-flow rebuildable core. This pipe has what’s described as an aggressive exhaust note, which SuperTrapp’s testing shows is significantly louder than Harley’s own Screamin’ Eagle exhaust. Using the stock hardware, the Stout mufflers bolt on easily, and are designed to accept the OE CVO end caps and heat shields, while unleashing a burlier sound and more power. SuperTrapp says the Stout offers dramatically increased flow which improves power from mid to high rpm.

hat could be better than cruising a HarleyDavidson down Pacific Coast Highway in sunny weather? Well, for the avid riders behind Wild 1, not much could beat it, which is why the company opened its own motorcycle shop on PCH in Huntington Beach, California back in the 1980s. Experience working on custom rides led the company to machining its own parts, and eventually making its own custom handlebars. As the saying goes, the rest is history. Recognized for the widely known Chubby handlebars, Wild 1 has been manufacturing handlebars right here in the USA since 1996. All Wild 1 handlebars are 1¼-inch in diameter, offering riders that timeless fat bar look they know and love. Wild 1 only uses USA-grade, 1008 steel to manufacture Chubby handlebars as it possesses high tensile strength, a critical characteristic to maintaining durability when being bent to shape. When combined with Chubby bars’ double-wall construction, this translates to long-term durability for riders. The Chubby bar design keeps shop technicians and garage mechanics in mind with anti-slip, diamond knurling and generously sized wire holes, which aid in running internal wiring for bar-mounted electrical controls. Plus, they feature a precisely placed step at the size transition for a seamless look with clutch perch and throttle assembly mounting. Style is unique to each rider, which is why Chubby handlebars are offered in a wide range of styles, including traditional cruiser and beach style bars, ape hangers, club style and even classic drag bars – all are available in showchrome or satin black powder coat finishes.
HANDLEBARS & RISERS
Built for the Ride
Wild 1 offers a wide range of handlebar styles that are available in the company’s popular 1¼-inch diameter Chubby style. They come in chrome or black.
Handlebar style wouldn’t be complete without pairing them with complementary risers, top clamps and gauge mounts. Each of these components from Wild 1 are CNCmachined from USA-grade, 6061-T6 billet aluminum, the performance proven standard in aluminum components in the motorcycle industry. There are a number of styling combinations between handlebars, risers and clamps, allowing you to serve your complete spectrum of customers. Wild 1 risers are available in varying styles and sizes, from 1½-inch Chubby risers, all the way to 12-inch risers in both pullback and straight designs, depending on the size. Wild 1 top clamps also help top off handlebar and riser pairings in style with varying styles and finishes.
Drag Specialties also carries a selection of risers and top clamps from Wild 1, each one designed to provide plenty of form and function for your customers’ builds.

A Lowering Kit and Tool for Quick Conversion
L
owering a Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight Softail can be a simple job with the combination of a Müller Motorcycle lowering kit and a spring compressor tool that helps ease installation.
Müller Motorcycle designed the lowering kit to fit all M-8 Softails with simple bolt-on installation. While riders can go as low as 1.6 inches lower than stock, continuous adjustability means riders can choose exactly how low they want to go. This versatility means the lowering kit will be attractive to custom-
ers who want everything from a minor ride height adjustment to a dramatic dip, so it’s a great product to have in stock. The lowering kit is precision engineered and manufactured in Germany from stainless steel and billet aluminum. It is made to lower the ride without reducing the rider’s comfort level. The team at Müller Motorcycle knows installing a lowering kit can be a challenge, so they designed the spring compressor tool to make the bolt-on installation of the lowering kit much easier. It’s one of those small tools that can make a big difference by saving both time and effort. The compressor tool securely clamps the shock absorber so each step of the lowering kit installation can be completed without hassle. And, while the spring compressor tool is designed for the M-8 Softail lowering kits, a simple conversion disc makes it useful for Müller Motorcycle’s Evo and Twin Cam lowering kits, too. ■

eed pistons for a Shovelhead? How about an Ironhead Sportster? Whatever Harley-Davidson year and model you’re working on, KB Performance Motorcycle Pistons likely has a fitment for it. From 1941 Panheads to today’s Milwaukee-Eight engines, KB Pistons has an incredible range of applications. There are also a lot of choices beyond just which pistons fit which bikes. Stock compression and high-compression applications are available for most Harley engines. Recently, the choices increased further with the addition of big-bore M-8 pistons. Another choice is whether to go with cast hypereutectic alloy pistons (for long service life, high-mileage bikes) or forged alloy pistons, both offered in a variety of compression ratios and strokes. Both the cast and forged pistons feature an M42 high load-bearing, anti-friction skirt coating. There’s only one exception to that, and it’s the KB Pistons Super Duty series. Stock Up on Heated Handgrips
T
here’s a common misconception about coldweather motorcycle handgrips. Many riders automatically assume those grips are haphazardly stuffed with wires and heating elements, making them bulky and clunky. If so, introduce those customers to Avon Grips’ heated handgrips that come in several unique styles. Avon Grips heated handgrips rely on routing the wiring (necessary to heat the grips) from the bike’s charging system to the handgrips themselves. However, Avon Grips first routes the grips’ wiring through the motorcycle’s accessory circuit, which eliminates the chances of the heating pads remaining turned on when the bike’s electronics are turned off. Easy to follow installation instructions come with all Avon Grips, too. In addition to easy and quick installation, the Avon Grips heated handgrips come in the company’s popular and
familiar styles including Air Cushion, Custom Contour and Velvet Air models – all available in non-heated grips, too. Finishes include either anodize or chrome, with end-cap choices in the popular Boss, Excalibur, Gatlin, Rival, Spike, and Super Sport models, so there are many styling varieties to choose from. Avon Grips’ heated handgrips are easy to install and provide plenty of warmth and comfort for cold weather rides.
Cold weather riding is just around the corner for most of the country, prompting prudent dealers to stock up now with cold-weather grips and point of purchase displays in their dealerships. Doing so means there’s no misconception among customers that they needn’t go any further than the parts counter to get heated handgrips. ■
