The challenges ahead only made it worse for Indian. Despite orders for military machines, World War I put a big dent in the retail business, followed by the Great Depression of the 1930s. The last big financial hit for Indian was offering military motorcycles to the U.S. Government for World War II at prices that didn’t fully cover the costs. In 1948, Indian was down on one knee, but not out of business yet. It had been decided a few months earlier, that a new production race bike could help Indian regain its onetime leadership position in the sport. The Model 648 Big Base Scout was born and went into production in time for its debut in February of 1948 at the all-important Daytona 200 race in Florida. The 648 was a hybrid of the speedy Sport Scout flat track racer, with more durability built in with a frame used by the military during World War II. Heavy duty brakes and other upgrades were included for the rough 200-mile event on Daytona’s sandy beach course.

I

t took the Indian Motocycle (no “r”) Company only about a decade to become the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles. By 1912, the Indian brand was being distributed in every major motorcycle market around the globe and the future looked bright. To keep up with the demand for its products, the company invested in expensive factory expansions, regional parts warehouses, and larger staffs, some of which was funded by selling shares of stock to investors. Indian was created by Oscar Hedstrom and George Hendee, both of whom became very wealthy personally, but when the shareholders gained controlling interest, the two founders lost control of their company and eventually left. By 1913, Indian began to feel the pinch from two forms of competition. One was easy to pinpoint: the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was having success with its line of twin-cylinder models that had hit the market in 1911. The other competitor was Henry Ford’s Model T automobile. Introduced in 1908, the “tin Lizzie” sold for less money than Indian’s most profitable model v-twin motorcycle and its success was definitely hurting Indian’s sales.

My father, Floyd Emde, was at the time a self-sponsored pro racer, paying his own costs to maintain his Harley-Davidson race bikes. Then Guy Urquhart, the Indian dealer in San Diego, told Floyd about the new 648 Indian race bike and said that he would order one from the factory if Floyd would race it at Daytona. My dad saw that as an easy decision to make and the deal was struck. Urquhart ordered the 648, provided a mechanic and the use of his company truck to transport the motorcycle to Florida. A huge field of 153 riders started the 1948 Daytona 200, and when it ended, Floyd Emde had out run them all, leading from start to finish to claim the victory at a record average speed of 84.01 miles per hour. His well-publicized success did give Indian a temporary shot in the arm. The company continued until 1953 when production finally stopped at the massive factory in Springfield, Massachusetts and Indian went out of business. In 2013, Polaris re-introduced the Indian brand which continues today. But that’s another story… ■

John started his time with LeMans as the Moose Racing Sales Manager back in 2000. John then served as a territory sales rep from 2004-2020. In January of 2020, John was named a Parts Unlimited National Sales Manager. His sales management and team leader experience, along with his personal enthusiasm for The Motor Company products, make for a seamless transition to the Drag Specialties position.

Thrust into the powersports industry through riding, racing and working within various powersports dealers for more than 20 years, John has always taken an active role in this industry. This included working every facet of the dealership, including selling V-Twin motorcycles in the late ’90s. His industry experience eventually led him to the LeMans family.

ance & Hines launched its largest and most extensive contingency support program for motorcycle racers. The contingency sponsorships, offered in partnership with four race sanctioning bodies, has the potential to put nearly $200,000 in the hands of motorcycle racers in 2022.

The program offers contingency sponsorship funds to riders in American Flat Track (AFT), MotoAmerica, NHRA Drag Racing and XDA Drag Racing. Contingency funds are offered to riders who are top finishers in a race or series and who qualify by using Vance & Hines products and services. Total value of the contingency sponsorship program in 2022 is $198,050. “Our company is built on a foundation of racing and performance,” said Vance & Hines President Mike Kennedy. “These contingency payouts are just one of the ways we support riders who use our products.”

In American Flat Track, Vance & Hines offers funds to the top ten finishers in every Production Twins and Singles class race and to the top five finishers in each SuperTwins race. In addition, a $5,000 Championship Bonus is offered in each of these three classes. With 18 races on the 2022 schedule, total potential payout in AFT is $110,850. MotoAmerica, the country’s preeminent motorcycle road racing series, has expanded its slate of King of the Baggers (KOTB) races to seven and includes Twins Cup races at all 13 of their events. Vance & Hines will offer payouts to the top five finishers in each KOTB and Twins Cup race and offers a $5,000 series Championship Bonus in each class as well. Total available payout in MotoAmerica racing is $44,200. The Xtreme Drag Racing Association (XDA) series offers ten classes of racing at six events which run from April through September 2022. Contingency is offered to the top two finishers in each class of each race for using a Vance & Hines exhaust or for head work done by the Vance & Hines Racing Development Center. Potential payout at XDA races is $9,000. ■

Drag Specialties Announces Mission King Of The Baggers Sponsorship Extension And Contingency Program V-TWIN AFTERMARKET LEADER SIGNS THREE-YEAR AGREEMENT; WILL POST $52,000 FOR MOTOAMERICA MISSION KING OF THE BAGGERS

rag Specialties has signed a new three-year agreement to be an official partner of the Mission King of The Baggers Championship. Additionally, Drag Specialties will also be offering a contingency program for the popular V-Twin class. Drag Specialties is posting $52,000 in contingency money in the seven-round series with eligible riders rewarded for their top-five finishes in each race. The payout is as follows: $2,500 for a win; $1,250 for second; $1,000 for third; $750 for fourth; and $500 for fifth. Additionally, Drag Specialties will pay $10,000 to the racer who is ultimately crowned as champion of the MotoAmerica King of The Baggers Championship. “We are excited to sign a new multi-year sponsorship agreement with MotoAmerica,” said Hylton Beattie, Global Motorsports Director for Drag Specialties. “Our partnership has been successful for both parties so we’re happy to continue for at least three more years. We are also pleased to offer a contingency program to racers in the MotoAmerica Mission King of The Baggers Championship.”

It didn't take much for Brian Klock and the Klock Werks crew to deck out this Indian Chieftain Classic with timeless lowrider styling.

I

f there’s an easier bike than an Indian Springfield to customize into a showstopper, a bike sharp enough to be featured on the cover of the new 2022 Indian catalog, custom builder and Klock Werks namesake Brian Klock hasn’t found it yet. Doubt that? Take a look at this one. It’s Brian’s personal bike and it’s a jaw dropper. But here’s the thing. This 2014 Chieftain Classic, as good-looking and custom lowrider-cool as it is, is basically an OEM Indian, just about factory-stock all the way. There are hardly any big changes made anywhere, most everything is just a quick and simple bolt-on. And, there are very few of them, all coming straight from the aftermarket, all readily available and right out of that Indian catalog this bike is fronting.

“It’s such a simple build,” Brian says. “A real no-brainer.” He’s not kidding. There’s nothing complicated going on here, there’s not much that wasn’t a bolt-on, and there weren’t even many of them. Yet the result, well, just look at this thing. It’s a stunner. “Granted,” Brian notes, “the paint job is killer. The lighter-blue painted panels, all the silver leaf and pinstripe artwork that Pete “Hot Dog” Finlan laid over that original Springfield Blue – that base color is still the 2014 factory Indian paintjob – all that is over-the-top cool. Definitely eye-popping.” Pete did a heck of a job, no question. It makes the bike. That’s not surprising – he’s the guy who painted nearly

every West Coast Custom that came out of the old Jesse James Long Beach shop. However, under that accent paint and artwork the biggest change Brian made, the only real mechanical and/or structural modification, was the addition of air ride suspension front and rear. The Chieftain, in true lowrider style, can now be slammed right down low onto a new center stand. Other than that, the parts swapping was truly minimal. The result, however, is anything but minimal. Coupled with that new paint and stance the easy addition of a set of classic fishtail pipes (of course, right?), a new Mustang seat, Klock Werks’ KlipHangers handlebars and a Klock Werks Klassic front fender topping a 21-inch rim laced to the original Indian ABS hub changed the look, feel and vibe of

the bike completely. Those few parts, and Pete’s paint work, transformed the Chieftain. Nothing more was done. Check that. The cylinders and cylinder heads were diamond cut, adding a little extra pop to up the wowfactor. Other than that Brian left things pretty much as Indian made them in the first place. And why not? Indian, Brian feels, has given riders a pretty good platform and some great lines to work with, the raw makings of great custom easily done. ebuilding a bike – or even just a part of one – can be a big task with an even bigger parts list. Drag Specialties tries to take some of the stress and expense out of the process by offering individual replacement parts and rebuild kits alike. With the kits, one part number includes everything necessary to get a job done. The goal, of course, is to make service jobs as smooth and trouble-free as possible. When it comes to brakes, Drag Specialties has added a new item to the list of available options with the ABS brake sensors. These replacement ABS brake sensors are available for both the front and the rear wheel, and there are fitments for a variety of Harley-Davidson models. For bikes equipped with ABS, these replacement sensors are an affordable alternative to the OEM version. And, like most replacement items made by Drag Specialties, the sensor comes with the OEM part number reference to prevent any confusion. Drag Specialties has also expanded its list of applications for caliper rebuild kits this year. Now, there are two options available for 2008-2021 Touring models, including a caliper rebuild kit with both rear pistons and seals and a kit with seals only.

Rethinking Rebuilds

The caliper rebuild kits feature high-quality materials and are available for both front and rear brake setups. By offering the kit in two versions – one with both caliper pistons and seals and a seals-only kit – dealers get only the parts they need for a particular job. Harley models that are getting a major brake system overhaul will benefit from Drag’s front and rear brake master cylinder kits, too. Each kit comes complete with a metal piston, and the quality of the included parts meets or exceeds OEM specs. ance & Hines’ popular line of bolt-on VO2 high-flow air intake systems for Harley-Davidsons includes a new model for 2022. The latest is a special edition, the VO2 America, which means there are now six variations to choose from, and all come CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified, making them 50-state legal. And, like the original five VO2 systems, the new VO2 America fits late-model HarleyDavidsons for improved air-intake flow.

As the name suggests, there’s a patriotic theme to the VO2 America intake system; it features American flag graphics embedded on the billet cover. Cerakote is a polymer ceramic compound treatment popular within the firearms industry for its ability to withstand excessive wear and tear so that, over time, it retains its original graphics well. And, like all VO2 air intake systems, the new America comes complete and ready to bolt onto specified late-model Harley engines with fitments for MilwaukeeEight, Sportster and Twin Cam models.

The VO2 America is the latest addition to Vance & Hines’ range of highflow air intake systems. The American flag graphics are applied with Freedom Black Cerakote, a finish designed to withstand plenty of wear and tear over time.

In addition to the stylish CNC-machined billet cover, the America system includes a washable air filter element, a one-piece venturi that maximizes incoming airflow for peak performance, a sturdy steel backing plate and quality ARP hardware to create a complete and straightforward mounting system. Simply remove the bike’s existing air intake and replace it with the VO2 system of choice, in this case, the VO2 America! The America is the latest addition to the VO2 line, which includes the Naked, the Blade, the X, the Rogue, and the Cage Fighter. The Naked system is especially popular among Harley owners wanting to retain the stock look for their bikes. This system is quickand-easy to install, and has provisions that allow the filter element to fit directly beneath the motorcycle’s OEM air filter cover. or more than 20 years, LA Choppers has manufactured handlebars right here in the USA. With the re-introduction of the Indian Motorcycle brand in 2013, the opportunity to produce American made handlebars for these new bikes has grown exponentially. LA Choppers is proud to offer handlebar and cable options for both the Indian Scout and the Challenger. The Challenger was Indian’s response to the HarleyDavidson Road Glide, and it is one heck of a bike! O

ne popular upgrade your Harley-Davidson customers want is to change out the stock handlebars. To complete the installation, replacement components are often required, including a clutch cable. Late model Harley Touring and Softail models were redesigned to incorporate a removable upper section on the OE clutch cable. However, choices are limited to upgrade that style, or choose from a broader selection of lengths, without using standard replacement clutch cables. Standard replacement cables require draining transmission fluid, removing the transmission side cover, and on certain models removing the exhaust system. As was designed, the simple task of changing the upper cable portion has now turned into a time-consuming cable change. Quick Connect clutch cables replace the OE upper cable section on 2018 and newer Softail and 2021 and newer Touring models with either stock replacement or alternative length cables that provide an easy-to-install quick connection to the existing lower cable. Prone to breaking, Magnum re-designed the adjuster assembly, and incorporated a sturdy and easy to adjust threaded metal cable adjuster to replace the OE plastic clip portion. Using easy-to-follow instructions, Quick Connect cables install as quickly as an OE replacement version without draining the transmission fluid. Magnum’s Designer and XR Quick Connect cable selections include cables manufactured with a bent tube end for Touring bikes with batwing fairings for an OE fitment. Cable adjustment is done the same as older mechanical cables were, adjust the clutch behind the Derby Cover per factory manual instructions, turn the adjuster to achieve the correct amount of slack at the clutch lever, and tighten the locknut. The retained OE cover slides over the Quick Connect adjuster assembly and the pre-installed rubber boot keeps the elements out. Featuring a high-quality braid, premium Designer Series Quick Connect cables are available in Magnum’s four Signature color choices – STERLING CHROMITE, BLACK PEARL, POLISHED STAINLESS and KARBONFIBR with complementing chrome or black chrome plated fittings. KARBONFIBR braid is created from metallic wire with distinct and varied black tones, blended and interwoven to mimic the unique, high-tech look of carbon fiber. The Cutlass is the latest addition to S&S Cycle’s Mk45 lineup, which has fitments for 1995-through-current Harley-Davidson touring models.

W

e all know look and sound are just as important as performance for Touring customers, and it’s also no surprise the factory mufflers on these machines leave a lot to be desired in all three categories. S&S Cycle offers a solution, exhaust systems backed by the company’s decades old performance heritage. The company’s line of Mk45 slip-ons are a popular choice thanks to the boost in style and performance they offer. Even better? They include dB reducers that allow the exhaust sound to be tuned for demanding customers. The latest addition to the Mk45 lineup is the Cutlass. Offered for 1995-through-current Harley-Davidson touring models, this muffler set is capped with a tip designed to perfectly follow the lines of the factory saddlebags, and S&S says it works nicely with factory extended bags as well. The Mk45 lineup is built around a 4.5-inch slip-on muffler that’s offered in either show chrome or Guardian Black, which is a dead match for factory black headers. The entire Mk45 line uses stainless steel internal baffles and RaceTEX fiberglass packing for a low, throaty rumble that wakes up the sound of the engine without creating a droning note on the highway. The Cutlass joins Mk45’s existing exhaust slip-ons, the Thruster and Tracer, which have helped make this lineup one of S&S’s most popular exhausts. The Tracer has a subtle look, with straight sides that continue the line of the 4.5-inch muffler body. Around the perimeter of the Tracer there are machined grooves similar to the recesses

in a rifle’s muzzle suppressor, but rest assured the Tracer still offers a full-throated sound. The Thruster end cap was S&S’s first Mk 45 offering and remains a popular choice. Thruster features a subtle beveled edge and slight taper similar to a jet exhaust. Both the Tracer and Thruster are sold in chrome or black to match or contrast with the muffler body. The Mk45 in your customer’s choice of Cutlass, Tracer, or Thruster, is available for all 1995-2016 Touring models and 2017 and up Touring models. Short, Tall and Towering From Defiance to Defining

T

he sissy bar, it’s a key styling cue of custom V-Twin culture, as iconic as peanut tanks, ape hangers, and rigid back ends. As popular as this rear-fender accessory is, its origins aren’t commonly known.

It all started in the 1960s when several states passed laws mandating the use of a bar on the back of motorcycles for safety reasons. Bikers weren’t happy about it and termed the compulsory device a “sissy bar.” To really drive their disapproval home, many riders took to installing absurdly large or wildly shaped sissy bars to show how dumb they thought the law was. What started as an act of protest has become a cornerstone of chopper style, as popular today as it was in the late 1960s. Essential Aerosols in Convenient Three Packs

leaning and lubing a bike’s drivetrain is a drag, but it’s an easier task if you have the right chemicals on hand. Maxima makes it easy by combining three of its popular chain-care aerosols into one convenient Chain Care Kit. They’re available with one of two different kinds of lube – Chain Wax or Chain Guard – to suit your customer’s riding conditions and preferences.

Once the chain is clean but still wet, a stream of MPPL works to displace water and shield metal against rust and corrosion. It’s penetrating nature also makes it great for stubborn nuts and bolts and other stuck parts. The final stage of this chain-care trilogy is lube, and it’s where your customers will have a decision to make. Truth be told both Chain Wax and Chain Guard are excellent chain lubes, but they have been developed for different conditions. For wet-weather riding or show chains that need to look spiffy, Chain Guard is a great choice. This fully synthetic lube is famous for its crystal-clear appearance, so once it’s sprayed it’s hard to tell it’s there. Chain Guard is exceptionally water resistant and is great for keeping chains lubricated and protected from corrosion in foul weather. The formula also contains a healthy dose of tacifiers, so once the lube sets up it stays put and won’t fling onto wheels or saddlebags. For dryer environments or changeable weather, riders will do well with the combo that comes with Chain Wax. Featuring a paraffin wax base and a strong heptane carrier agent, Chain Wax coats links to provide a durable and effective layer of protection. Chain Wax is highly water repellent and fairly clean running in dry, dirty environments, making it a great lube for mixed conditions. ■

Each trio includes a full-size can of CleanUp, MPPL (Multi Purpose Penetrating Lube), and either paraffin-based Chain Wax or oil-based 100 percent synthetic Chain Guard to keep those links moving smoothly. When these products are properly applied, riders can look forward to extended chain and sprocket life, increased horsepower, and quieter operation. All kits come with Maxima’s CleanUp chain cleaner, which is an absolute workhorse. CleanUp is an emulsion-type degreaser that dissolves grease and oil and then rinses away easily with water. The 15.5-ounce aerosol can is like having a handheld power washer, yet the special formula is gentle on metal, plastics, and of course a chain’s O-rings. Spray it on, let it set, and then just rinse it off with a hose. Mildly dirty chains often clean up with just a bath, but crud-covered links may require some brushing. Either way, CleanUp is great for banishing grime, and works well on anything that’s dirty.

ust because something has always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the right way. For decades, cylinders had cast-iron sleeves, and no one bothered to question it. Then, along came Revolution Performance, the company that decided to challenge this idea by introducing its Bolt-On Big Bore Kits with sleeveless all-aluminum cylinders. There might have been doubters back when Revolution Performance hit the V-Twin scene in 2002, but after seeing sets of those cylinders last well beyond the 100,000-mile mark, there was no arguing that aluminum cylinders are an outstanding choice for larger displacement and more power. The smoother bore surface results in reduced friction and increased reliability for a better, more efficient big bore upgrade. Compared to cast-iron cylinders, Revolution Performance’s aluminum cylinders dissipate heat faster, are lighter in weight and are up to ten times more resistant to wear. By making the cylinders and forged pistons from the same materials, the components heat up and expand

at the same rate, which allows for tighter tolerances. The result, of course, is a system that runs extremely efficiently and produces more power. Both styles of the big bore kits come complete with custom forged pistons with rings – all designed for optimal compatibility with Revolution Performance’s cylinders – plus wrist pins, circlips and high-performance head and base gaskets. The Revolution Performance Bolt-On Big Bore Kits are designed as a straightforward bolt-on application. There is no need for case boring or any other engine modifications, making the Bolt-On Big Bore Kits the easiest way to crank up a motor’s power. The Monster Big Bore Kits, on the other hand, are the fullpower option that require case boring as well as some additional engine modifications. It might be a little bit more work, but it will result in maximum power. On top of that, the Monster Big Bore Kits have been extensively tested to ensure their reliability, meaning riders can go big without worry. controls can also be used on earlier model Softails with Shovelhead engines. When fitted as such, a separate BDL voltage regulator mount is required for the Shovelhead application. Drag Specialties also carries this special adaptor mount. In addition, the GMA forward control master cylinder has a 3/8-24 thread pattern for the banjo bolt that comes out of the inner left front side of the master cylinder. The entire assembly allows for a stylish, easy installation that’s priced right to give any older Softail a new look. Matching passenger pegs and clevises are also available and sold separately.

GMA’s forward controls for 1986-1999 Harley-Davidson Softail models have been reconfigured several times, and now feature more functions and greater adjustability.

O

ver the years BDL’s GMA brand award-winning forward controls for 1986-1999 Harley-Davidson Softail models have been reconfigured several times, each iteration an improvement over the previous design. And, just like the original GMA forward controls, the most recent versions are made and machined from stout 6061-T6 billet aluminum, and incorporate modifications to address specific customer requests in terms of styling and adjustability. Visually, the most noticeable change is found in the reshaped mounting brackets for a lower profile and cleaner overall appearance. In terms of functionality, GMA forward controls listed in the 2022-2023 OldBook now feature splined shift shafts and shift shaft arms with pinch bolts, allowing for multiple indexing options when the controls are mounted to the motorcycle. For greater durability, the shift shaft is larger in diameter and supported by an oil impregnated bronze bushing pressed into the left-side mounting bracket. BDL also fit an adjustable actuating rod with clevis design for the right-side rear brake pedal, although the adjustable indexing shift lever on the left side remains as on previous GMA forward controls. This new dual adjustability for the right and left foot controls now makes it easy to position both the brake and shift levers to suit individual riders. The new controls fit FX- and early FL-style frames that have three-hole left side and two-hole right side mounting locators. Although the catalog specifies 19861999 model years, BDL says that the reconfigured foot

elping a rider who wants to customize their V-Twin can be as simple as taking a look at the many Cycle Visions products available from Drag Specialties. Sissy bars never seem to go out of style, and Cycle Visions has a lot of them for customers to choose from. From standard, old-school bars to the extreme angles of Attitude Sticks, Cycle Visions has sissy bar designs in both 18-inch and 30-inch heights. The company uses 9/16-inch round or square steel bars to construct the sissy bars, making them as durable as they are attractive.

Catching Up with Ernie Vigil

Noted stunt man and pioneering freestyle rider Ernie “Edub” Vigil counts on the performance of Avon tires whether he’s on a movie set or filming one of his popular videos for social media.

W

hen Ernie “Edub” Vigil got hired as Jim Carrey’s motorcycle stunt double for the movie Yes Man, the stunt coordinator asked him what tires he wanted to ride on. Ernie had no idea, but he decided to make some calls to see if any tire companies wanted to join forces with him. His first call was to Avon Tyres, and they were enthusiastic about the idea. That was back in 2008, and Ernie and Avon have been a team ever since. Ernie loved the Avon tires he rode on for the movie, and he went on to rep the brand in freestyle competitions and shows, film and TV and, these days, tons of wildly-popular online videos. When Avon and Ernie started working together, Avon was sponsoring the XDL, the freestyle competition league that helped propel riders like Ernie and his longtime riding partner Nick “Apex” Brocha to success. These days, with the rise of social media, Ernie and Nick can usually be found making videos under their Team Empire banner. They have their own YouTube channel called Everything Empire, but the pair are also busy making videos for sponsors like Triumph and ICON. It’s easy to find videos like ICON’s Motorcycle Versus Car drift series and City Is My Playground, which all have millions of views and feature Avon tires. As much as he loves performing for a crowd, Ernie has a real passion for video production. “I edit the majority of our videos,” Ernie says. “Nick and I do the directing, and I love the production side of things as much as I love the motorcycle side of things.” That hasn’t always been the case. Earlier in his career, Ernie would rather be out competing. “When I first started doing this, competition was everything,” he says. “I was so

infatuated with the sport side of things, and progressing and getting better. Upgraded Brake Calipers and Rotors

Arlen Ness Products’ line of custom 4- and 6-piston differential bore brake calipers are a great upgrade over a Harley-Davidson’s stock calipers. They also look great.

T

he focal point of most custom HarleyDavidson motorcycles is either the bike’s modified engine or an unmistakable paint job on the gas tank, fenders and body panels. Generally, parts such as the brakes seldom raise an eyebrow among interested bystanders. After all, most motorcycle disc brakes are often rather nondescript in their appearance. As for the brake calipers, well, calipers are typically finished in one of four flavors – chrome, black anodize, polished or unsightly raw metal. Not much to see here, folks. Arlen Ness Products has been working hard to change that perception of brakes for Harley-Davidsons. The company’s line of custom 4- and 6-piston differential bore brake calipers that originally featured Gold, Chrome and Titanium finishes has been expanded to include Red and Blue anodize finishes for 2022. Perhaps the most colorful offerings from Arlen Ness Products are the front and rear brake calipers to fit either OEM or aftermarket rotors for many popular Harley models. Each caliper kit includes adaptor brackets to mount the colorful differential bore calipers to many Harley models, giving owners the option to use existing mounting hardware and brake lines, or upgrade to custom fasteners and hoses to further enhance the bike’s show-stopper appearance. Specifically, front calipers can be teamed with OEM brake rotors, or owners can upgrade to Arlen Ness Products’ custom rotors, using included adaptor brackets to complete the upgrade with Ness calipers. All systems are compatible with the bike’s ABS (if so equipped), for a complete and thorough custom-bike conversion.

Upgrading to Arlen Ness Products’ oversize, full-floater rotors (single- or dual-mount front) is easy with full-floater rotors that fit a wide range of Harley-Davidson models.

All Arlen Ness Products calipers are made of CNCmachined billet aluminum. In terms of improved stopping performance, cooling fins are CNC machined into each caliper’s left and right sides for maximum heat dissipation. Upgrading to Arlen Ness Products’ oversize, full-floater rotors (single- or dual-mount front) is easy with full-floater rotors that fit a wide range of Harley models. All Ness rotors are made of 420 stainless steel and come with dedicated mounting brackets and inner carriers when applicable to complete specific conversions. Inner carriers are made of strong, lightweight 6061 billet aluminum, available in anodized Blue, Red, Black, or Gold finishes. Tools for the Milwaukee-Eight Softail

M

any bikes provide hash marks on the axle blocks or frame so your techs and customers can verify and adjust the rear-wheel alignment. However, the 2018 and up Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight Softails are devoid of reference marks, making it difficult to accurately true up the rear wheel when adjusting belt tension.

Motion Pro’s new Wheel Alignment Tool was specifically made to allow quick and accurate rear wheel alignment checks on Harley-Davidson’s newest Softail.

Thankfully, Motion Pro has a solution. The new Wheel Alignment Tool was specifically made to allow quick and accurate alignment checks on Harley’s newest Softail. The tool utilizes a dual-sided axle plug and stainless-steel indicator rod, so users can check the axle’s location in the dropouts relative to a set location on the swingarm. An O-ring on the tool serves as a reference, and by simply flipping the axle plug 180 degrees you can compare the measurement from one side of the bike to the other. This tool works without removal of the exhaust or side bags. The best part? There are no hash marks to count or measurements to remember.

To make wheel alignment and belt-tensioning even easier, Motion Pro has a Harley-specific 36mm socket for reaching the hard-to-access axle nut on the Softails. It features a captured swivel extension as well as a plastic sleeve to prevent scratches on the exhaust. Gorilla Rocker Shafts

Super-Strength for a Harley Top End Feuling’s Gorilla Rocker Shafts are double the strength of the OE parts, and are built for big power applications.

C

ompetition does a great job exposing factory weaknesses. The Feuling team discovered that while hot-lapping Laguna Seca with its highly modified Milwaukee-Eight Bagger Racing League bike. The OEM Harley-Davidson rocker-arm shafts weren’t up to the job. Unable to withstand the stress imposed by high-lift cams and heavy-duty valve springs, a factory rocker shaft snapped in half right where it bolts to the cylinder head. Not good. Feuling’s new Gorilla Rocker Shafts are aimed at fixing that problem. The cause of the failure was twofold. First, the OEM material isn’t strong enough. Secondly, the factory machining of those shafts removes too much

material from the shaft’s mounting points, further weakening things. Gorilla Rocker Shafts address both of those conditions. First, Feuling’s substituted 4140HT steel, a material rated at double the strength of the factory shafts. They also re-engineered the mounting points to leave much more shaft material around the holes that the bolts or studs pass through. Stronger material and a stronger design, that doublestrength 4140HT steel is precision ground, gas nitrited and given a final surface treatment. To strengthen the weaker OEM mounting design, Feuling developed custom tooling to create a countersunk relief in the shaft for the bolt/nut head instead of the factory-design machined flat which thins out the entire end of the shaft. Available for all M-8s from 2017 on, and Twin-Cams from 1999 to the last 2017 models, Feuling’s Gorilla Rocker Shafts are available separately or combined into kits with ARP studs and nuts for the Milwaukee-Eight applications or ARP bolts for the Twin-Cams. ■

ommon Harley-Davidson modifications done when seeking power and efficiency include intake or fueling upgrades, but what about the third piece of the internal combustion puzzle – spark?

A quick upgrade your customers may be leaving on the table is updated spark plug wires. The ACCEL Motorcycle crew not only recognized OEM Harley plug wires left a lot to be desired, they also developed a tested and proven solution. Stock spark plug wire anatomy is simply crushed carbon and cord surrounded by insulation. The main issue that arises as the miles tack on is a reduction in conductivity through

increased resistance. Essentially, the coils will have to work harder to deliver the proper amount of energy to the spark plug, which is critical for performance and efficiency. ACCEL spiral core spark plug wires are constructed of a carefully designed combination of materials – including a fine, stainless-steel conductor – that promote consistent conductivity backed up by high heat-resistant durability, providing comforting confidence of proper ignition performance for many miles. ACCEL engineers endurance tested these plug wires to ensure they continuously measured approximately 500 Ohms/ft. of electrical resistance, a value the ACCEL team determined to be the sweet spot for Twin Cam, Milwaukee-Eight and other V-Twin ignition systems.
