ne of the milestones of the riding season each year is Daytona Bike Week. Before that, everyone is just getting ready for Bike Week. But now it has happened, and this issue has reports on several significant things that were happening there this year. Races, rides, bike shows, new products and awards banquets…there was plenty going on. As always, Vance & Hines was there, telling riders about their Bagger “Trifecta,” which consists of an upgraded Vance & Hines Fuelpak called the FP4, VO2 Falcon Air Intake, and Backslash 450 exhaust systems. We have a story with details about all three starting on page 20. Daytona Bike Week was not only about future business for Vance & Hines, though. Founders Terry Vance and Byron Hines were honored for all that they have achieved together through the years, both as a business and as a team on racetracks from coast to coast. The pair were inducted together into the prestigious Motorsports Hall of Fame. Be sure to check out the story in the News and our Daytona Bike Week report starting on page 24. Congratulations to both Terry and Byron for their well-deserved recognition. Drag Specialties’ new National Sales Manager, John Strangfeld, was also at Bike Week. John is not new at the home office in Janesville, he’s just been over on the Parts Unlimited side, until moving recently into his new position. He shares some of his thoughts on page 27. We wish John the very best in his new role for LeMans Corporation. I have known him since he joined the company and I know he brings a lot of great new ideas to Drag Specialties. And lastly, this issue also showcases two very cool customized motorcycles: an Indian Chief built by Drag Specialties’ Brand Ambassador Carey Hart for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and a Harley Sportster that was highly modified into a street-worthy Flat Tracker that looks like it just came off the racetrack. That machine – called the “Fangster” – was built by Jimmy Chou, whose family has been making products in Taiwan for Drag Specialties for more than 30 years. ■

A

s one of the most successful teams in motorcycle drag race history and the founders of aftermarket parts company Vance & Hines, Terry Vance and Byron Hines have certainly cemented their place in the sport’s history. Now the duo have received the noted honor of being inducted into the prestigious Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in Daytona Beach, Florida. As part of the class of 2022, Terry and Byron were honored at an induction banquet held in March during Daytona Bike Week. In being voted into the Hall of Fame, Vance and Hines joined an impressive – and selective – list of legends, making the racing and business duo (inducted as one) the 36th such honorees in the motorcycle category. In an announcement from the Hall of Fame, Vance and Hines were lauded for both their legendary racing successes and their role in the motorcycle aftermarket. “Few rider/tuner pairings have dominated like Terry Vance and Byron Hines. From the early ’70s, until Vance retired from riding in 1988, they captured 14 Pro Stock and Top Fuel titles,” the organization wrote in the release. “Their popularity prompted NHRA to add motorcycle racing to its national series. Since 1980 they’ve made Vance & Hines a world-leading

aftermarket parts supplier. Their road racing teams have won AMA Supersport and Superbike titles and two Daytona 200s. More recently, they’ve run the successful Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock drag team. Vance was No. 35 on NHRA’s 2001 list of its 50 Greatest Drivers.”

NEWS EVENTS Mees Tallies Back-to-Back Victories in AFT Tim Lester photo

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees is all smiles after winning the Texas Half-Mile, his second win in as many races. “I wanted this one bad,” Mees said about his victory.

rogressive American Flat Track superstar Jared Mees (Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian Motorcycle) rebounded like a champion from a slow start of the season with back-toback wins, first at the Texas Half-Mile in March, and then another at the inaugural I-70 Half-Mile in late April.

Few expected Mees to kick off his Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle title defense as a relative non-factor, running in fifth in the season opener at Volusia Speedway Park. That muted performance made his follow-up victory all that more important, and given a second chance, Mees made it clear that the path to the #1 plate still goes through him. Mees looked virtually unbeatable all night long, a trend he continued once he dove underneath a quick-starting JD Beach to take control of the Main Event while still in its opening stages. The defending champ pulled clear and cruised to the checkered flag, only suffering a minor scare when Beach and his Estenson teammate, Dallas Daniels, used traffic and their own battle for second to reduce the gap to back under a second over the race’s final two laps. “It felt really good,” Mees said. “I really wanted to come in and have a good result today with the break we have coming up. I wanted this one bad.” A month later at the inaugural I-70 Half-Mile in Odessa, Missouri, Mees continued his winning ways in an instant classic performance as he squared off against teammate and two-time Grand National Champion Briar Bauman. Bauman (Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian) powered into the lead at the start, but Mees worked to prevent him from getting any thoughts of running away out front. Mees then used that momentum to rail his way into the lead for good measure. Mees carried the lead in the race’s final laps when Bauman attempted a few inside and outside maneuvers, dicing with Mees before the champion positioned himself for victory. As a result, I-70 Motorsports Park stands as the 32nd venue conquered by Mees, tying him with the iconic Chris Carr for most wins in the premier-class history. “What a day,” Mees said. “What a hectic Main Event with Briar. I felt him breathing down my neck the entire time. A track like this makes for a lot of tiny little mistakes, but everybody has their fair share of them, and we stuck it out and got to the checkered flag first.” ■

ood news for customers with 20212022 Harley-Davidson Touring, Softail and CVO models. Vance & Hines now offers an upgraded Fuelpak known as the FP4 for those popular Bagger bikes. As you might guess, the new FP4 checks in with many new features to boost performance for those Milwaukee-Eight motorcycles (including CVO and ST models). At the heart of the new Vance & Hines FP4 are reconfigured connectors, allowing this new tuner to readily conform to 2021-2022 models powered by Harley’s recently updated Milwaukee-Eight engine configurations and their larger displacements. The addition of the FP4 means that Drag Specialties dealers can service all late-model Harleys, using either the Fuelpak FP3 for pre2021 Milwaukee-Eight models and Evo-engine Sportsters (but not the Sportster S), or the FP4 that addresses those newer M-8 applications. According to Vance & Hines, the FP4 and FP3 tuners are highly intuitive tuning tools designed especially for boosting performance of late-model Harleys of all displacements and model designations.

VANCE & HINES

Fittingly, the new FP4 shares the same helpful features as those found in the FP3, plus new features unique to the new setup. Those existing – and familiar – features shared by the FP4 and FP3 include the ability to calibrate the bike’s speedometer, read and clear trouble codes, view live sensor data and a host of other functions. Yet the new FP4 tuner is slightly smaller in physical size, so it’s easier to work with when taking readings and downloading. Don’t let the reduced size fool you, though, the new FP4 also introduces new technology for Bluetooth that improves the tuner’s memory capacity, which in turn gives it a few additional and expanded features that Harley owners and technicians will certainly enjoy.

Retired Drag Specialties sales rep Bill Newell educates consumers about Vance & Hines’ broad range of performance products for Harley-Davidson Touring, Softail and CVO models during Daytona Bike Week.

owner or shop technician gains live access to view sensor data for the motorcycle’s electronics and fuel systems. And, like the FP3, additional technical support is available from Vance & Hines’ Fuelpak technicians in Santa Fe Springs, California, doing so through the bike owner’s smartphone. In fact, the helpful Vance & Hines maps are designed to offer data for every high-performance exhaust and air cleaner combination available on the market. Simply download the app that’s available to all FP4 users and begin fine-tuning the M-8 engine and the motorcycle’s related electronic-based features. Another advanced feature found with the FP4 is the ability to quantify the bike’s performance data logging. And like the FP3, the FP4 backs up the bike’s OEM calibration for future modification options or allowing the rider to back to a stock configuration. In fact, advanced tuning features give the FP4 operator full access to critical ECU tables right in the app itself.

When linked to the FP4 the bike owner can change the engine’s idle speed, raise the rev limit, adjust tables, target air/ fuel ratio and spark advance, and much, much more, again doing so from the smartphone. Clearly the FP4 is a versatile and effective means for improving the performance of any 2021-2022 Milwaukee-Eight-powered Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The FP4’s Performance Data feature even allows customers to record their rides, look at all available sensors in the created chart, and see a map of their rides recorded with their phone's onboard GPS. With Vance & Hines’ new FP4 tuner, your customers can take the first step to unleashing some serious performance gains in their Harley-Davidson Bagger bikes. They can complete the power trifecta by adding the company’s new VO2 Falcon air intake and its Backslash 450 exhaust system. All of Vance & Hines products are made in the USA.

The VO2 Falcon is the latest addition to Vance & Hines’ popular air intake systems. The bold design angles the intake track directly into the wind allowing for plenty of airflow.

The VO2 Falcon in the new matte-forged carbon fiber finish provides a bold styling cue as well as a welcome performance upgrade.

Big Gulp –VO2 Falcon Air Intake

V VANCE & HINES

ance & Hines recently expanded its popular line of VO2 air intake systems for Harley-Davidsons to include the new VO2 Falcon. It’s a custom air filter system that boasts an extremely unique intake design.

22

Foremost, the Falcon brings the minimalist and popular West Coast style front and center to the MilwaukeeEight-powered Softail lineup (2017-2022 model years). The Falcon is easy to identify, too – a bold and visually dominant 90-degree-configured intake tract places the Falcon directly in the wind, so that airflow into the engine’s intake tract is never a problem. Not only does the Falcon’s unique configuration offer fantastic performance for a 90-degree air intake for Harleys, but its features also provide form and function. Like the other six VO2 intake systems, the Falcon has a strong – yet lightweight – CNC-machined billet aluminum backing plate to provide a solid base that affixes to the engine’s intake tract. Breather standoffs coupled with a stylish and sturdy flange cover utilize 12-point stainless-steel banjo bolts to secure the integrated breather assembly to the engine itself.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2022

Finally, a washable high-flow slant-nosed conical air filter element with an embossed V&H logo allows efficient airflow for maximum engine breathability and performance. In addition, the throttle-by-wire systems use a configured induction module cover to maintain smooth airflow. An optional rain sock is also available for the Falcon. Structurally, the Falcon shares many of the same familiar features found on the rest of the Vance & Hines VO2 lineup that includes the America, Blade, Cage Fighter, Naked, Rogue, and X models. The Falcon makes it lucky number seven air intake systems for Harley enthusiasts to choose from. The Falcon is available in show-quality chrome, ceramic matte black, and two eye-catching carbon-fiber options, including either traditional carbon-fiber high-gloss weave or a new matte-forged carbon fiber finish. And, just like other VO2 Air intakes from Vance & Hines, the new Falcon has an EO from California D-632-6. All VO2 air intake systems, including the new Falcon, come complete and ready for installation.

Rounding out the performance trifecta from Vance & Hines is the company’s newest free-flow exhaust system, the Backslash 450. The exhaust provides a subdued, but racy profile and is emissions compliant for all 50 states.

Easy Breather – Backslash 450 Exhaust

P

assing adequate amounts of fresh air into an engine’s combustion chambers – the primary objective behind intake systems like the Vance & Hines VO2 air intake – is only part of the puzzle when boosting performance from an engine. Maintaining an unobstructed flow to and through the engine’s exhaust system is important, too. With that in mind Vance & Hines developed a new and efficient free-flow exhaust system to fit all MilwaukeeEight-powered Baggers, CVO and S models. The newest Vance & Hines exhaust system checks in as the Backslash 450, and it’s meant to complement the high-performance VO2 intake systems for late-model (2017-2022) Harley-Davidson FL-based baggers, plus the new S model with extended saddlebags. The S model, in particular, is considered by many to be a turnkey Performance Bagger; just add gas and go – fast. Clearly, it’s a touring motorcycle that reflects the growing popularity of the Performance Bagger concept that has rocketed to popularity. Yet, the S model begs for an

»

exhaust system with free-flow mufflers, a system that’s stylish enough to fill the exhaust cutouts at the bottom of the bike’s OEM saddlebags. The solution is the Vance & Hines Backslash 450 and its meaty 4½-inch-diameter mufflers. As for styling, the mufflers’ matte black finish and slash-cut ends offer a subdued, yet racy, appearance that blends well within the saddlebag cutouts. Inside the 450’s canisters you’ll find new patent-pending LS275 baffles that were engineered and developed to emit an audible performance-quality tone. Above that, the entire system is emissions compliant for all 50 states. Most of all – and as the dyno numbers prove – the Backlash 450 promotes a broader powerband and additional peak horsepower for Milwaukee-Eight engines. The whole ensemble, including the VO2 Falcon intake and Backlash 450 exhaust, when matched with the new Fuelpak FP4, offers what amounts to a stageone package that’s sure to become a standard among Performance Bagger owners today. ■

BIKE WEEK 2022

Especially for riders in the Northeast and Midwest, those three little words conjure up the proverbial vision of palm trees, ocean breezes and warm sunshine – and a chance to thaw out from winter. Yes, it’s a mile-marker event, the acknowledged beginning of a new riding season and it’s been that way for decades. So you might think that putting a fresh spin on the 81st Daytona Bike Week would be a challenge – but not this year.

Post pandemic, some things on Main Street changed, some stayed the same.

Still considered the kickoff of the riding season, Bike Week reveals new products and possibilities for customizing. It also provides expertise from company representatives to guide the purchase for both function and style.

At the Daytona 200 Monument, Zach and Jill Parham dedicated a plaque in memory of and to honor of J&P Cycles founder John Parham. Such memorials sustain the Monument and give depth to the history of motorcycling.

The 34th Annual Motorsports Hall of Fame of America induction sparkled with gearhead stars, none brighter than Terry Vance and Byron Hines. As the only motorcycle-related inductees, it was quite a prestigious recognition.

Round 1 and Round 2 respectively at MotoAmerica’s King of the Baggers. Brandon Paasch took his Triumph Speed Triple RS to a second straight win in the Daytona 200. Racing nostalgia resonated at the Daytona 200 Monument Gathering where Drag Specialties Magazine publisher and editor-in-chief Don Emde joined by phone to mark the 50th anniversary of his Daytona 200 win. And, at the best-yetattended Sons of Speed races at New Smyrna Speedway, singles and flatties roared around the banking board-track style with marvelous menace. EBay Jake took the checkered flag in both Hot 61 and Hot 45 classes. Bike shows and charity rides abounded for every style and proclivity, some sidelined by rain later in the week but

many going on is spite of it. One respite from the rain was a star-studded induction ceremony for the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America where members of the class of 2022 included Terry Vance and Byron Hines, Jack Roush, Denise McCluggage, and the founders of HarleyDavidson, among others. The museum was also a stellar location for the Over the Hill Gang Breakfast, an annual event in support of the Daytona 200 Monument. Best of all, the un-famous among us enjoyed a semblance of long-awaited and much anticipated “normal,” complete with the joy that implies after the long hiatus. Not even a Florida downpour could dampen that! ■

THE DAYTONA BENCHMARK DRAG’S NEW SALES MANAGER JOHN STRANGFELD AT BIKE WEEK

J

ohn Strangfeld has been with LeMans Corporation for 22 years, but it wasn’t until January of this year that he was named Drag Specialties National Sales Manager. Two months later, John was off to Daytona Bike Week, his first since moving to the Drag Specialties side of things. And, John says, it was his first Bike Week in 20 years. Of all the years he could have returned to Daytona, he picked a good one. By all accounts, attendance was up, vendors had great sales and there were signs everywhere that the powersports industry has a lot to look forward to. John was at Daytona Bike Week to get to know Drag Specialties valued vendors, many of whom he had never met in person. That meant he spent most of his time at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson, which has become a destination unto itself during Bike Week. As John made the rounds, it quickly became clear that this year’s Bike Week was one for the books. “Everybody that I spoke with – vendors and dealers alike – said they have never seen it so busy during Bike Week,” John says. “The grounds were packed, and people were spending money. It was a very positive indicator for 2022 as a whole.” In fact, many vendors reported that they sold out of product early and needed to reorder. Even when it rained during the second weekend, motorcycle enthusiasts weren’t deterred.

They simply arrived at Bruce Rossmeyer’s in cars, which made it that much easier for them to load up everything they bought. Robust sales are always great, but John noticed something else that was worth celebrating, too. The older generation of bikers were there, but so were many younger riders. “What really excited Tom Motzko and I were the number of younger riders who were a part of Bike Week. It was exciting to see the many age demographics participating and riding at that event,” John says. “We saw enthusiasts riding with friends in groups that included scooters to Baggers. It was refreshing to see everyone just sharing the passion of riding anything with two wheels.” John adds that, “For me personally, it was very exciting to see the diversity among the attendees. I’m excited to see the younger group of riders coming up and participating in the event. There were so many different groups of people and so many different types of motorcycles, all in the same place at the same time. There was so much enthusiasm and passion for our industry.” Hopefully, that passion and energy will continue throughout the rest of the year. Daytona Bike Week has traditionally been a good indicator of the state of motorcycling, and it’s shaping up to be a great 2022. ■

KING OF THE BAGGERS – GETS ROLLING FOR 2022 POPULAR SERIES RETURNS TO MOTOAMERICA SCHEDULE Photos by Brian J. Nelson

The 2022 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers Championship kicked the season off with two races at the high banks of Daytona International Speedway during this year’s Daytona Bike Week.

T

he 2022 MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers Championship got off to a red-hot start with two races at Daytona International Speedway and a single race at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in March and April with three different winners in the three races. The series began at Daytona with two Mission King of the Baggers races run in conjunction with the Daytona 200 during Bike Week. In typical Daytona fashion, the races were ultra-close. How close? In race one in Florida, Tyler O’Hara and his Mission Foods/S&S Cycle Indian Challenger topped the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide of Travis Wyman by just .200 of a second. And third place was just another .035 of a second behind with defending series champion Kyle Wyman nabbing the spot on his HarleyDavidson Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide. Just when you thought racing couldn’t get any closer than in race one, race two ended in even more thrilling fashion with Mission Foods/S&S Cycle Indian Challenger newcomer Jeremy McWilliams winning by just .025 of a second over his teammate O’Hara. Roland Sands Design’s Bobby Fong (yes, the former three-time MotoAmerica Superbike race winner) was just .160 of a second from victory. In winning ‘one for the aged’, 50-year-old Ulsterman McWilliams made his KOTB debut a magical one and he became the only rider other than O’Hara and Kyle Wyman to win a baggers race in the brief history of the new class. From Daytona, the Mission King of the Baggers Championship ventured to Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. The lone race there was won by Kyle Wyman and his factory Harley, becoming the third winner in three races with his 1.8-second victory over Vance & Hines Racing Harley’s James Rispoli.

Factory Harley-Davidson rider Kyle Wyman cruises to another victory at the Road Atlanta round of the King of the Baggers series, followed by rider Zack Nation.

O’Hara was third and at the top of the point standings after the first three races with 61 points – 10 more than McWilliams and 20 more than the Wyman brothers who are tied for third with 41 points. Rispoli is next with 33 points from the three races. So just how steep is the development curve for the motorcycles competing in the Mission King of the Baggers Championship? Defending champion Kyle Wyman had the fastest lap time in Sunday’s race aboard his H-D Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide Special, which was a 1:31.789. By comparison, the fastest lap time recorded in 2021’s KOTB race at Road Atlanta was a 1:36.392 by Mission Foods/S&S Cycle/Indian Challenger Team’s Tyler O’Hara. For those of you keeping score at home, the Baggers riders were going nearly five seconds per lap quicker this year than they did last year. ■

Performance Bagger racing rules! Defending King of the Bagger Champion Kyle Wyman found his stride at Road Atlanta, leading fellow Harley-Davidson rider James Rispoli and S&S Cycle/Indian's Tyler O'Hara on his way to victory.

At Road Atlanta, it was Kyle Wyman with the win, followed by Vance & Hines/Harley Davidson James Rispoli and then S&S Cycle/Indian Tyler O'Hara. With the whole King of the Baggers show headed to the next round at Laguna Seca in July, O’Hara finds himself squarely in the lead at 61 points over his teammate Jeremy McWilliams second at 51. Kyle Wyman rounds up third with 41 points.

CHIEF

A CUSTOM INDIAN FOR THE MASSES

W

hen it came time to get working on the Indian Chief you see on these pages, custom builder, motocelebrity, and Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador Carey Hart had his work cut out for him. It needed to be a custom build with wide appeal, a motorcycle with style and ergonomics that would work for a variety of riders. A unique custom for the masses, if you will.

Carey Hart is no stranger to good-looking customs. A Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador, he built this one with lots of help from the FatBook and Indian catalogs and it was easier than most. Paint, bolt-ons and attention to detail was all it took.

34

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2022

Now, after the final fasteners were fastened and all the paint properly polished it’s apparent that’s exactly what Carey has accomplished with this 2022 Indian Chief. Next up, delivering it to South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem during this year’s Sturgis Rally. Governor Noem – a rider in her own right – will be the first custodian of this bike when she receives it during an event at the beginning of the rally. She’ll keep it for a while, have some fun on it and show it off, giving the public and the press a good long look at Carey’s handiwork.

New risers, clamps and levers repositioned the Chief’s controls into a comfortable, easy-to-reach spot. That clean headlight bucket looks custom, doesn’t it? It’s not. It’s OEM Indian.

After that initial stint, the Chief will be raffled off to anyone with the winning ticket – hence the broad appeal – and all proceeds will go straight to the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks to benefit the Second Century Habitat Fund. The program supports habitat programs across the state. Carey, who returns for 2022 as Drag Specialties’ Brand Ambassador, said that he met Governor Noem briefly in Sturgis in 2021 and learned that she’s a big fan of Indian Motorcycles and a supporter of the Sturgis Rally. “That’s when I hatched this plan, hoping to get the Governor involved and further the cause of women on V-Twins,” Carey added. “I spoke with some folks on her staff, seeing if maybe we could expand on this motorcycle relationship, and they were all for it. One email to my friends at Indian headquarters had this 2022 Chief delivered to my shop. They were on-board 100 percent, too. We were off and running,” Carey recalled. Choosing the mid-size Chief as the platform for this giveaway/auction bike was easy. “First of all, that was the bike the Governor was on when I met her,” Carey said. “She’s obviously familiar with it. Besides, it’s a pretty amazing platform.” The aim, then, was to make that good bike

Custom wheels, a handful of Drag Specialties bolt-ons and new paint by Air Trix of Santa Barbara, CA took a basically stock Chief to the next level. That good-looking tank and those abbreviated fenders are OEM Indian.

even better, and when the dust settled that turned out to be easier than Carey thought. Products straight from the Drag Specialties Indian and FatBook catalogs kept the build move smoothly. “Really, all I ended up doing was moving some things around a little, control wise, making the bike more compact and comfortable.” True, he did all of that, but there’s a lot more than just a relocated handlebar, a new seat and a different control set making the difference here. Front to back, Carey took careful aim on just about everything important to the ride, handling, and overall performance of the Chief, leaving the fenders, tank and bodywork all stock Indian. Working with bolt-ons, most coming from those two massive catalogs, Carey went to work addressing the Chief’s comfort and ergonomic issues. To tighten up and smooth

out the Indian’s ride Carey swapped out the front and rear suspension. Custom, lightweight wheels shod with performance Dunlop rubber replaced the Indian originals, and, with a collection of upgrades from companies like Galfer, the braking system got a complete makeover from the master cylinders, levers and pedals to all the lines, fittings, calipers and rotors. Mechanically Carey left the drivetrain factory stock. And why not? The mid-size Chief came packed with the same ThunderStroke 111 used to power all the big, heavier touring-model Chieftains. The ThunderStroke 116 is also available in these models. But either way, 111 or 116, that’s plenty of power for the application. A sharp looking, weight-saving, slimmeddown and torque-building custom 2-into-1 exhaust replaced the bike’s bulky, oversized OE system, a major improvement in performance and style right there.

DRAG SPECIALTIES/CAREY HART

The Chief’s unmistakable South Dakota theme (Governor Kristi Noem gets first dibs on this Indian) is both subtle and spectacular.

Happy bikes come out of happy, well-organized shops and Carey Hart’s place sure looks like a fun place to work. Quite an array of helmets up on that wall, huh?

With the overall theme set as a celebration of South Dakota and The Rally, Carey wanted to nail that without resorting to any crazy, over-the-top graphics. “That part, honestly, was a little tricky,” he says. There are graphics here, to be sure, and some pretty intricate ones at that, but there’s nothing flashy or in-your-face. At a distance it all appears to be just a clean, blue and gold motorcycle, and a darn good-looking one at that. However, up close and buried deep into that blue paint there’s some exquisitely detailed artwork depicting a host of South Dakota history and landmarks. This visual feast gets credited to Chris Wood at Air Trix in Santa Barbara, California. Chris, who paints all the helmets for Red Bull North American pro riders, always subtly including those rider’s personalities and interests into the artwork, took a similar approach here. The result is stunning. The takeaway from all this? That’s easy. Without too much effort at all and working with paint and bolt-ons from the Indian and FatBook catalogs, Carey Hart has shown that an Indian Chief can easily be transformed into a real custom show-stopper that not only looks great, but is built to be ridden hard. ■

After Carey wraps this one up, and shortly after its big Dunlops hit the pavement with South Dakota’s governor in the saddle, this Chief will be raffled off. Some lucky ticket holder will get one heck of a custom Indian, built to fit!

Keeping a Nomad Rolling The Legendary Bean’re Talks Tires

had a 21-inch Avon Speedmaster up front. Today, I’m still running Avons,” he says. These days, Bean’re does his wandering on Avon Cobra Chrome tires. He’s given other brands a try, but he keeps coming back to Avon.

When it comes to laying down the miles – and he’s ridden thousands of them – the legendary Bean’re counts on Avon Tyres, his choice of tires since the late ’70s.

“I’ve tried a lot of brands of tires,” Bean’re admits. “I’ve even dabbled in car tires, but in the end, I always come back to Avon Tyres. They are the best tires that combine performance with longevity.” Those two tire characteristics are a must for Bean’re, especially longevity, since he puts hundreds of thousands of miles on his custom choppers. As he puts it, “I’ve ridden my chopper to the Arctic Ocean on the northern tip of Alaska and to the southern border of Mexico at Guatemala and Belize.” Right now, Bean’re is riding a Bagger Twin Cam chopper that he built himself. Anything stock that can be swapped out has been, since Bean’re needs parts that will stand up to the long miles and less-traveled roads that he feels right at home on. Earlier this year, Bean’re travelled through Mexico, counting on his Avon Cobra Chrome tires to get him from start to finish. Some of his stomping grounds are more familiar territory, though, and as usual, he’ll be at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this summer.

From the Arctic Circle to the roads of Southern Mexico, Bean’re rolls on Avon Cobra Chrome tires. They’re designed to deliver longlasting performance, stability and handling.

I

t might seem strange to use a line from fantasy literature to describe a motorcycle legend, but when J.R.R. Tolkien wrote that “not all those who wander are lost,” he might have been talking about Bean’re. The longtime motorcycle nomad has been wandering for a few decades now, living life one adventure at a time. Bean’re has got it figured out, with a lifestyle most of us only ever dream about. Bean’re also has it figured out when it comes to his motorcycle tires. He’s been using Avon Tyres since the late 1970s. “Even back then, the coolest motorcycles always

After all, he is the unofficial Mayor of Sturgis. Bean’re is such an iconic figure at Sturgis that in 2012, he was featured on the rally’s official artwork. Titled “The Ironhorse Heist,” the painting by David Uhl puts Bean’re on a vintage bike, right in the middle of a Wild West train heist. It was an immediate hit, and the painting wound up being the cover art on Bean’re’s memoirs of his adventures so far, Bean’re… Motorcycle Nomad. Of course, there are a lot more adventures in store for Bean’re, and his Avon Cobra Chrome tires will be there to see him through each one. “With over 250,000 miles on my current chopper and 340,000 miles on my last chopper, I’ve been through a lot of tires, and there is a reason I keep running Avon. They are simply the best!” Bean’re says. ■

Lighting the Way for Performance Baggers

The Custom Dynamics TriBar Eliminator Harness is a plug-and-play solution that allows the removal of the stock Harley-Davidson TriBar and fascia.

B

aggers have always been practical motorcycles, but they haven’t always been the most stylish way of getting around. Luckily, that niche has gone through a radical transformation in recent years with the rise of the Performance Bagger scene. These days, it’s easier than ever to turn a “grandpa Glide” into a true performance motorcycle. It’s the best of all worlds, letting riders look good and ride hard, all while still being comfortable and having enough storage space for a road trip. Custom Dynamics has been along for the ride, too, and the company’s Performance Bagger parts continue to be popular with customers looking to get some custom style.

Custom Dynamics Sequential Low Profile Bagz are minimalist light bars measuring a mere 7/16-inches thick, but still providing bright LED illumination.

Another minimalist – yet super bright option – are the ProBEAM Fillerz. light panels that fill in the stock cutout on saddlebag rails for 2014 and newer HarleyDavidson Baggers.

The Custom Dynamics TriBar Eliminator Harness is a plugand-play solution that allows the removal of the stock Harley-Davidson TriBar and fascia without interrupting power to the rear turn signal arm bar. By removing the TriBar, the rear fender is more visible, showing off its aggressive, chopped style. Building a more streamlined Bagger continues with a Custom Dynamics Turn Signal Eliminator Kit. This kit replaces the rear turn signal bar on most 1997 and newer Baggers, offering a sleek look with a low-profile radius license plate frame tucked against the rear fender. The kit utilizes bolt holes from the stock turn signal bar for simple installation, and the license plate frame comes in chrome, gloss black or a ready-to-paint raw finish. White LEDs illuminate the license plate.

Baggers that come with a painted filler panel between the bike and the saddlebag can get a big style upgrade with ProBEAM Fillerz. These plug-and-play light panels fill in the stock cutout on saddlebag rails for 2014 and newer Harley Baggers. Simply remove the filler panels and bolt in the ProBEAM Fillerz to get nine LED light pipes of illumination per unit. There are 33 full-contrast lights, too, to provide either run-brake-turn or brake-turn signaling, depending on the application. Options include a chrome or gloss black housing and a red or smoked lens.

Building a Performance Bagger usually means throwing the “go big or go home” adage out the window. Streamlined and understated is the way to go instead, as is the case with the Custom Dynamics Sequential Low Profile Bagz. The minimalist style of these light bars, measuring a mere 7/16-inches thick, still equals big illumination thanks to the bright LEDs. A red running light, bright full-intensity red brake light and sequential turn signals that light up in the direction of the indicated turn boost visibility. The plug-and-play Sequential Low Profile Bagz mount under the rear lip of the stock saddlebag lid via doublesided tape, and a quick-disconnect means the saddlebags are still easy to remove. ■

Grab a Grip!

New Options for Comfort and Style

W

hen it comes to personalizing the comfort and look of a motorcycle, two of the most important modifications are the handlebars and the grips. Adjusting both of these to a rider’s preference means everything in terms of control and comfort. When it comes to handlebars, there are multiple heights and widths available, as well as a wide range of styles that run the gamut for everything from heart-pounding performance riding to bars built for slow-cruising style. With grips, the selection narrows a bit, but there are still a big lineup of options – wild styles, some that are rubber, others that are a mix of materials, ones that are thinner, those that are thicker, and grips that are just right. Those customer looking for the latter, should check the new grips from LA Choppers. The company’s new grips offer up a perfect fit, with just the right amount of rubber and a look that is timeless. There are different height and width handlebars, grips that are rubber, grips that are thicker, some that are thinner. The options can go on forever. That is why LA Choppers decided to introduce a grip that has the perfect diameter, just the right amount of rubber, and a timeless look. Introducing the LA Choppers Grabber Grips! Not only do these grips look right at home on just about any style of Harley-Davidson, they also feel just right. These new grips are made from machined aluminum on the inner and outer pieces, with a perfectly dense, yet soft rubber in the center. Just soft enough to absorb the vibrations of that VTwin, and firm enough to provide a confidence inspiring grip when riding. The new Grabber Grips are available in two different finishes – Anodized Black and Chrome Plated. The outside of each grip includes a tasteful LA Choppers logo so your customers can put their brand loyalty on full display to their riding buddies. The MICHELIN Commander III tire line covers the entire V-Twin segment, with each version of the tire tailored to the type of motorcycle it’s made for – a Cruiser or Touring model. This straightforward approach makes it easy for customers and dealers alike. Simply choose the appropriate tire size in a bike’s category. The MICHELIN Commander III tire range is designed to provide both long tread life and outstanding grip in the wet. Wet-weather performance is achieved in part with a high amount of silica in the tire compound, providing molecular grip to help tires stay put, even when the weather is bad. The tires also feature optimized tread designs that are excellent at dispersing water. The MICHELIN Commander III Cruiser tire is designed for even more wet grip and durability than its predecessor, giving riders premium confidence and longevity, rain or shine. The result is that the MICHELIN Commander III Cruiser tires have brought home awards from industry experts who appreciate the excellent wet grip. At the same time, the tires still provide outstanding mileage. For those long-haul enthusiasts – like a lot of the riders who will be traveling cross-country this summer to Sturgis and other destinations – the MICHELIN Commander III Touring

To ensure confidence at any lean angle, Michelin designed the Commander III tire with a less rounded profile compared to its predecessor, the MICHELIN Commander II. That new profile optimizes the contact patch across the entire profile for a more planted feeling, even during cornering. In addition to its technical features, the MICHELIN Commander III tire range also keeps style in mind. The tires have Michelin’s Premium Touch Technology, a patented sidewall design that enhances the styling of V-Twins. ■

Easy Does It

Oil-Change in a Box

Maxima offers two versions of its Oil Change in a Box – the Quick-Change Kit and the Complete Oil Change. One includes everything needed to replace the engine oil and filter, and the other for replacing the fluid in all three sumps.

W

hen you have all the items needed to accomplish a given task, life is easier. And who doesn’t like it when things are easy? In light of that fact, Maxima Racing Oils created the Oil Change in a Box for Harley-Davidsons. These kits contain everything your customers need to knock out regular maintenance on their motorcycles, and Maxima has model-specific applications dating back to the 1980s. Your customers can choose between Maxima’s QuickChange Kit and the Complete Oil Change, depending on whether they’re looking to change just their engine oil and filter or replace the fluid in all three sumps. Both kits come with OEM-approved lubes with engine oil that’s either synthetic or mineral based, depending on the year and model of the bike. In addition to including the appropriate quantity of premium oil for your client’s specific bike, each oil-change kit comes with one of Maxima’s ProFilter premium spin-on filters in either black or chrome, to suit your customer’s preferences. These filters feature additional pleating to capture contaminants, a silicone check valve for rapid fluid flow at startup, and a nut welded to the end for easy installation and removal. The filters even have a pre-lubed gasket for additional convenience. Maxima is all about making things easy for you and your customers.

48

Maxima is also all about ensuring your customers’ engines are getting the best protection possible, which is why it has spent more than 40 years refining its lubes. These Oil Change in a Box kits come with the same premium V-Twin oils your techs and customers know and love, in either a full-synthetic 20W-50 or mineral-based 10W-40, 20W-50, 25W-60, 50WT, 60WT, or 70WT. Maxima’s V-Twin synthetic oil is blended to be exceptionally shear-stable, with ester additives that help it cling to metal surfaces for superior protection under the extreme heat and loads that air-cooled engines experience. These oils are also highly oxidatively stable to attain the extended change intervals required for many Harley engines. While synthetic oil may be the most modern technology on the market, some engines call for conventional mineral oil. Maxima’s V-Twin mineral-based oil is specifically formulated for V-Twin engines, with an advanced polymer package that helps resist mechanical shearing and viscosity breakdown from extreme heat. These oils also include industry leading anti-wear and pressure additives to protect critical engine components, while a premium additive package keeps engine parts clean and free of sludge. The convenience and quality of the Oil Change in a Box can’t be beat. Whichever kit your customers choose, they can rest assured knowing that the lubes meet or exceed OEM specifications, so there’s no risk of voiding the bike’s warranty. ■

PERFORMANCE PARTS

Race Bred, Track Tested

Putting the Performance in Performance Bagger AMA Superbike Champion Josh Herrin aboard Performance Machine’s King of the Baggers entry — a bike decked out with the company’s Race Weight wheels, calipers and mid-controls.

At the center of the 11-spoke Assault wheels or split-spoke Revolution wheels are Race Weight Series hubs that are machined down to the bare minimum required to support the axle and brake rotors. Cutting weight from rotating, unsprung components is one of the best ways to improve a bike’s overall handling, and these Race Weight wheels are pounds lighter than stock hoops. RACE WEIGHT FULL-FLOATING BRAKE ROTORS The perfect weight-saving compliment to the Revolution or Assault wheels are PM’s Race Weight rotors. The discs are CNC machined to ensure a flat and parallel surface for maximum brake-pad contact, while the full floating design means these rotors can dissipate a ton of heat without deforming the way a solid disc would. Cross drilling further improves heat management while also reducing weight, and the aluminum carrier is carefully machined to save even more precious ounces. RADIAL-MOUNT BRAKE CALIPERS

The Race Weight Assault wheels are machined from forged aluminum for the ultimate in strength and lightness, and Performance Machine has designed them to reduce rotating, unsprung weight.

T

he King of the Baggers race series represents the leading edge of what a Performance Bagger can be, and Performance Machine has been involved in the program since the beginning. If your customers are aiming to improve their bike’s handling, cornering clearance or braking performance, Performance Machine offers the same Race Weight components, calipers, suspension, and other parts used on the company’s official race bike. RACE WEIGHT FORGED ALUMINUM WHEELS Lighter, stiffer rolling stock is a critical mod for hardcharging Bagger riders, and Performance Machine excels in wheel manufacturing. The Race Weight wheels are machined from forged aluminum for the ultimate in strength and lightness, and PM has even back cut the rim lip to reduce weight where it matters most.

Radial-mount calipers aren’t just for sportbikes anymore! Now available for 2000 and up HarleyDavidsons, PM’s Radial-Mount Calipers offer more braking power by anchoring the caliper body next to the rotor’s entrance and exit points to hold more precise caliper-to-rotor alignment under extreme use. The four-piston design, with four individual brake pads, offers improved pad contact for optimum braking power.

RACE WEIGHT MID CONTROLS Ready to carry some lean angle? PM’s Race Weight Mid Controls for Milwaukee-Eight Touring models increase cornering clearance and put the rider in a much more aggressive riding position. Made from 6061-T6 billet aluminum these mids are strong, lightweight and can be used with a PM rear-brake master cylinder or the stock master cylinder. With a simple bolt-on design, these Race Weight controls install easily and require no modifications to the bike. ■

TIRES

In Pursuit

Performance-Minded V-Twin Tires When Indian Motorcycle was looking for an OE tire for its performance-minded Bagger, the Pursuit, it opted for the Metzeler Cruisetec.

Metzeler developed the Cruisetec specifically to handle the weight and power of fully loaded Baggers. They are designed to give heavier V-Twins improved grip, handling and stability.

I

t’s no surprise that Indian chose the Metzeler Cruisetec as the OE tire for its latest Bagger, the Pursuit. As Indian continues to produce highperformance motorcycles, the OE tires need to be capable of handling the weight and power of these machines, which means they need performance-minded tires like the Cruisetec. It’s also not a surprise to see Metzeler Cruisetec tires on the Indian Pursuit, because the tires are already OE on quite a few other Indian models, too. The tires are OE on the new Scout Rogue and Scout Rogue Sixty models, and they are a familiar sight on most of the Cruiser, Bagger and Touring models from Indian. Metzeler Cruisetec tires are chosen again and again as Indian’s go-to tire for OE since they are designed to deliver the enhanced handling, grip and corner stability required by modern V-Twins. The Cruisetec profile is actually inspired by Metzeler’s sport-touring tires. It is robust enough to support the heavier V-Twins it was designed for, but it also provides improved handling characteristics, especially in side-toside transitions. Better handling and better grip go hand-in-hand, which is why the Metzeler Cruisetec tires feature a tread pattern that improves mechanical grip. On the rear tire, dual-compound rubber provides the right mix of longevity, improved grip and stability. The softer shoulder

52

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

compound includes plasticizers and a higher silica ratio for even more grip in the corners. The rear Cruisetec tire is also designed to last. Long alternating grooves help distribute pressure evenly throughout the tire carcass to ensure the tire wears in a regular pattern across the entire surface. Mile after mile, the tire’s performance characteristics will remain the same since the wear pattern is so even. Metzeler designed the front Cruisetec tire to have outstanding water evacuation and improved braking efficiency. It is especially effective on bikes that have ABS, since the front Cruisetec tire reduces ABS chatter for a smoother braking feel. In addition to aiding with water evacuation, the grooves on the front tire are also designed to have an increased full/void ratio as the lean angle increases, offering more grip the farther a rider leans through the corners. Of course, for all of its performance characteristics, the Metzeler Cruisetec is still a tire designed for V-Twins, which means it has to be able to support the bigger bulk of those machines. Inside the tire, the cords are stiffer and the rubber is thicker. This creates a dampening effect and reduces the floating feeling riders sometimes get when exiting a turn under hard acceleration. ■

Big-Bore Power

Complete Engine Upgrade Kits with an M-8 that desires more power out of their machine? A Power Package will take the 107inch engine to 124, or an existing 114 out to a whopping 128 cubic inches. The Power Packages offer the largest bore increase possible without crankcase mods, and come with a laundry list of upgraded components to optimize performance and reliability.

Power Packages from S&S Cycle are the one-stop-shop for a complete engine upgrade. They include all the needed components to add big inches and net massive power gains, reliably.

S&S took a page out of its own Pro Stock Drag Race book when designing the cylinder and piston combination for the Power Packages. Just like S&S’s race engines, these kits use lowfriction cylinders and forged pistons. The jugs are matched to the slugs so no machining is required, and cylinders are offered in a variety of finishes to match the OEM look of the bike. All kits come with cams, in either chain- or geardriven format depending on your customer’s needs. We all know cams can quickly change a bike’s performance, and your customers can rest easy knowing that S&S has selected the right profile to compliment the bore and stroke parameters of each engine. More power means more heat, which calls for more consistent lubrication, so the Power Packages come with a complete cam-chest upgrade, fully machined from billet aluminum and featuring bronze plain bearings for tighter tolerances and more reliable operation. S&S’s oil pump and cam plate are a crucial and popular upgrade for any modified engine, which is why they’re included in the Power Packages.

Nice curves: The dyno doesn’t lie and with S&S Cycle’s Power Packages, big reliable power for your customers’ bikes is available in an all-in-one setup.

W

hen all the easy bolt-on performance mods have been exhausted, it’s time to do engine work, and Power Packages from S&S Cycle are the one-stop-shop for a complete engine upgrade. Available as 100/110-inch kits for 19992017 Harley-Davidson Big Twins and as 124/128-inch kits for 2017-2022 Milwaukee-Eight models, the Power Package includes all the needed components to add big inches and net massive power gains, reliably. With a Power Package, your customer with an 88-inch Twin Cam can bump up to a full 100 inches, and that 96-inch bike can jump up to 103 or 110. Got a customer

All S&S chain drive Power Packages also include an upgraded cam-chain tensioner, plus Quickee adjustable pushrods with tubes, and S&S’s Premium Tappets. M-8 kits come with Quickee pushrods, tappet cuffs and valve springs, and every kit includes all gaskets, O-rings, bearings, and hardware needed for installation. Getting every part and gasket needed for an engine upgrade in one package is certainly appealing, but perhaps more important is knowing that those parts are coming from S&S. With more than 60 years of experience, S&S’s well-researched and rigorously tested parts truly live up to the company’s “Proven Performance” slogan. ■

Get Into Gear, Easier

The Quick Cure for Hard Shifting

The EZ Shift Inner Arm Lever was designed by THRASHIN to help improve leverage and reduce the force needed to shift gears. This makes the entire gear range easier to shift through.

THRASHIN’s Adjustable Shift Linkage allows customers to fine tune their shifter position, all without having to remove the linkage from the bike.

H

ow many times have you had a customer complain about hard shifting and an elusive neutral on their Harley-Davidson? It’s a common problem, and thankfully THRASHIN Supply has a solution. The new EZ Shift Inner Arm Lever and Adjustable Shift Linkage for 2007 and later Touring models reduces shifting effort and helps pin down that pesky neutral position with improved leverage angles, plus easy adjustability for precise shifter placement. Right angles rule when it comes to shift linkage, since that’s the arrangement that provides the best leverage and the most accurate movement between all the connected parts. Unfortunately, the stock linkage and inner lever arm on many Dynas, Softails and Touring models with forward controls have poor alignment that demand heavy boot inputs to shift gears. The EZ Shift Inner Arm Lever was designed by THRASHIN to help improve leverage and reduce the force needed to shift gears, which not only makes neutral more accessible, but makes the entire transmission easier to use. How much easier? Based on THRASHIN’s testing, the EZ Shift Inner Arm Lever reduces shift force by roughly 25 percent. That’s a noticeable improvement, plus the part installs in just minutes and comes in chrome or a black-anodized finish so it will look great on any bike. Upgrading to the EZ Shift Inner Arm Lever is a quick and simple way to help your customers tackle shifting problems on their Harleys. For even bigger improvements

in shifting and a personalized shifter position, riders will want to add the Adjustable Shift Linkage. While Harley’s stock shift linkage is a non-adjustable and dull-looking rod with two low-quality ball joints that are known to wear out, THRASHIN’S Adjustable Shift Linkage uses premium heim joints with stainless-steel balls and Teflon-coated bushings for long-lasting performance. Both heim joints thread into a custom-machined shift shaft offered in triple-plated chrome or a hard-anodized black finish, and everything is secured with premium stainless-steel ARP hardware. The only thing better than the Adjustable Shift Linkage’s looks is its easy adjustability, which opens the door to better linkage angles as well as a more comfortable shifter positions. With the stock linkage, your only option is to rotate the shift lever on the splines of the shaft, but with THRASHIN’s new linkage, the shifter height can be adjusted with infinite precision. Just crack the lock nuts free and rotate the rod to shorten or lengthen it and fine tune the pedal height. It only takes one wrench, and you don’t have to remove the linkage from the bike. With these two parts combined, your customers get improved shifting function and improved bike appearance. THRASHIN Supply has been developing foot controls for Harleys for nearly a decade, and as with all of its components, the EZ Shift Inner Arm Lever and Adjustable Shift Linkage are proudly manufactured in America. ■

Added Performance Race-Proven V-Twin Oil

LIQUI MOLY’s HD Synth 20W-50 oil is formulated specifically for Harley-Davidson engines, and offers optimal levels of lubrication, friction and engine cleanliness.

T

he MotoAmerica King of the Baggers Series is back for 2022, with six rounds on the calendar and a grid full of Baggers ready to race. Among those entrants is Eric Stahl, who is returning to the series with his Jiffy Tune Racing Harley-Davidson after running the three rounds held in 2021. This time around, Stahl will have a little extra edge for his Harley thanks to LIQUI MOLY. By switching to LIQUI MOLY HD Synth 20W-50 oil, Stahl reports the engine temperature has dropped significantly. It’s no surprise the oil makes such a big difference in the operating temperature of the bike, since LIQUI MOLY designed this oil specifically for Harley engines. By focusing on a specific engine style, LIQUI MOLY has been able to come up with a precise formula to best suit the needs of Harley engines. The base oils and high-quality additives ensure optimal lubrication, friction and engine cleanliness. Of course, that means the oil works great, whether the bike is being ridden on the street or the race track. LIQUI MOLY has a range of synthetic motorcycle oils available, all designed to provide a premium level of performance for everything from V-Twins to sportbikes.

The Motorbike MoS2 Shooter from LIQUI MOLY is an additive that provides immediate friction and wear reduction, and helps an engine run at its best.

When riding in extreme conditions, like racing, it’s important to protect the engine as much as possible from all the wear and tear. Riders who want to reduce friction even more can pair their LIQUI MOLY oil with a LIQUI MOLY Motorbike MoS2 Shooter. This additive provides immediate friction and wear reduction. Not only will the engine last longer, but it will also help the engine run at its best. The Motorbike MoS2 Shooter works by forming a protective, pressure-resistant boundary layer on all wear surfaces. This is an immediate bond, so riders can confidently add the shooter, then jump on the bike and go. In addition to the wear resistance, the shooter also provides cold-start lubrication to prevent damage that could be caused by the lack of oil at startup. In all, one Motorbike MoS2 Shooter provides longer engine life, improved performance and less noise. LIQUI MOLY makes several additives for both oil and fuel, like the Engine Flush Shooter for clearing out build-up. These additives help engines stay clean and efficient for maximum life and horsepower. ■

All it takes to put together a jawdropping custom is a builder with vision and some carefully chosen bolt-ons to bring that dream to life.

Jimmy and his spin-off/custom-oriented Fangster offshoot all this is set to get even bigger. The younger Chou took over day-to-day operation of the family’s manufacturing business after his dad – who founded the company in 1983 – decided it was time to step aside. In 2017 Jimmy expanded the operation opening Fangster Auto Parts, which became the biggest parts distributor for everything Harley-Davidson in Taiwan and a top Drag Specialties dealer. Jimmy’s dealer/distributor shop is also designing and developing an all-new lineup of Fangster custom bolt-ons, many seen here on this Fangster-modded 2009 Sportster.

Fangster pegs, grips, air-filter kits and derby covers – all seen here – are joining bits like the bike’s Vance & Hines 2:1 in the FatBook. There’s a lot more coming from Fangster, too.

As pure-custom as this Sportster appears it was, in fact, completely put together with readily available off-theshelf hardware, a lot of it coming straight from the Drag Specialties catalogs. Granted, there are some pretty major bolt-ons in this mix, parts and full-systems like a complete custom front end, a race-centric swing arm and a full Fangster-produced chain-drive conversion, including the sprockets and front sprocket cover. Coupled with all that are Progressive 970 Series piggyback shocks and custom, Fangster-laced wheels, 18-inches for the front and 17-inches in the rear, both mounting Pirelli RS tires. Then there’s all that flat track style bodywork, but here again it’s all a bolt-on. It’s a full Ronan Kit from Saddlemen.

All fiberglass, the package includes the fuel-tank covers, oil-tank and battery covers and a complete flat track tail section and seat pad. A Fangster-original headlight nacelle mimicking the look of a racer’s front number plate completes the swap. More bolt-ons include the THRASHIN Supply handlebars, Magura controls, rear-sets from Roland Sands, a Speed Merchant skid plate, new calipers, Galfer rotors and a Vance & Hines 2-into-1 exhaust. Nearly everything else is Fangster original, either prototype parts or parts already set for the Drag Specialties catalogs. ■

Slip-On Mufflers for Indian Chieftains

I

ndian motorcycle riders have historically been a rather patient lot. However, in recent years, as their numbers have grown so has their desire for high-quality aftermarket products for their bikes. Well, the team at Cobra has listened and the company is offering a range of fantastic options available for your customers with Chieftain motorcycles. “In the past, Chieftain riders would stop by a Cobra booth at one of the many shows or at Bike Week and politely ask if we had any exhausts for their bikes,” said Tim McCool, President of Cobra. “Now, they march up and demand to know when the product will be available.”

The new Dual Cut NH uses a 4-inch body capped off with beautifully machined aluminum tips. These tips feature dual cuts finished in black with machined alluvial flutes.

Cobra decided on these two versions after it conducted extensive market research with Indian riders. The company showed eight to 10 different design options and the Chieftain customers overwhelmingly chose the Neighbor Haters (NH) and the Dual Cut designs. That’s hardly a surprise given those two are also the favorite designs for the Harley-Davidson Bagger crowd. The 4-inch bodies are available in chrome or black and in three different configurations – all have the same mounting locations to the frame. The differences are in how and where the saddle bag support mounts are welded to the top of the mufflers, and in one version the overall length is just a little shorter than the other two.

The Neighbor Haters use a 4-inch body that bells out to 4½ inches at the rear. It features a smooth rolled end. That shape adds a megaphone enhancement to the sound, and the louvered mechanical core exits in a trumpet bell shape.

The three versions include the following: Long Body mufflers for models with no saddlebags; Long Body mufflers for models with longer saddlebags; and Short Body mufflers for models with shorter saddlebags. Whether your customers choose the NH or the Dual Cut style, they will experience the same signature Cobra sound and performance from either muffler. The 2¼-inch louvered cores are the same on either muffler – the difference is the tip design. On the NH version the bell tip is welded to the core, whereas on the Dual Cut the tip bolts to the core and through the side of the muffler to hold the core in place.

Because of the difference in saddlebag lengths on different models, Cobra uses a specific muffler body – designated short body or long body – to match the bag length. This image shows the Dual Cut NH long body on the bike with the longer bags.

Harley-Davidson Sound System Upgrades

AUDIO UPGRADES

Unlocked Potential

With Saddle Tramp’s Digital Signal Processors, your customers can unlock the OE radio on select Harley-Davidson models for advanced audio upgrades. The products allow riders to improve their sound systems and overall riding experience.

M

odern Bagger models from Harley-Davidson are fitted from the factory with front-toback amenities, which means even more customization opportunity for riders. Going beyond performance and bolt-on modifications, Saddle Tramp unlocks the potential for advanced custom audio with its Digital Signal Processors (DSP). Offered for select 2014-and-up Harley-Davidson motorcycles, this DSP reflashes the OE radio and puts full tuning control in the palm of your customers’ hands. Saddle Tramp DSPs are designed to integrate with factory audio systems, offering easy expansion of the sound system when using other Saddle Tramp accessories. They also allow riders to upgrade and customize their music and overall riding experience. Proprietary integration technology allows the DSP to reflash the factory radio for a flat response curve, which means a much more accurate sound frequency delivery without the need for external equipment. This reduces the cost, saves time and allows installers to provide better service with complete control over the upgrade. This updated version of Saddle Tramp’s DSP accommodates Boom! Box GTS, Boom! Box 6.5 GT, and Boom! Box 4.3 radios, and installs easily behind the fairing. With 10 channels of output and 31-band graphic EQ or five-band parametric EQ per channel, this DSP is sure

to exceed the expectations of your audio upgrade and achieve the perfect sound. It also features independent equalization for front, rear and subwoofer, and the ability to read, write and store configurations for future recall. A time-delay circuit for each channel allows front and rear channels to be delayed independently up to 10 milliseconds. The Saddle Tramp DSP also retains balance and fade control so that the rider can further customize the radio sound to their liking. Perhaps the most innovative feature of this DSP is that its tuning setup and wireless control are operated via a smart device application downloaded to a tablet or mobile phone. The AXXESS DSP XL app is free to download, easy to use, and features optional password protection. The app is available exclusively for Android devices using the Google Play store. Saddle Tramp includes everything needed to install the DSP. The pre-wired harness makes for easy amplifier installation. This product also features a water-resistant case and connections for added protection. Installers can follow the step-by-step instructions that are included with this package, and can find additional guidance via the Metra Electronics YouTube channel. ■

Finishing Touches

Mufflers and Grips for a Custom Look

Khrome Werks offers more slip-on muffler options for Harley-Davidson CVO models – the 4½-inch HP-Plus series of mufflers in the Eclipse finish.

C

ustom Vehicle Operations (CVO) models might be limited edition, but the choices keep growing for Khrome Werks mufflers that coordinate perfectly with CVO looks and finishes. There are now even more muffler options for Harley-Davidson CVO models thanks to two new Khrome Werks slip-on mufflers. Both of these new mufflers feature the company’s proprietary Eclipse finish, a black-chrome electroplated finish that gives each slip-on a burnished black sheen. The new mufflers are designed for 2022 Blue Steel CVOs. The Eclipse finish is an exact match for the Blue Steel OE headers, meaning the Khrome Werks muffler will integrate seamlessly with the bike. Khrome Werks also offers this muffler in chrome and black finishes, which match the other stock CVO finishes for a perfect pairing every time. Each muffler comes with Khrome Werks’s lifetime warranty, too. Based on the Khrome Werks 4½-inch HP-Plus series of mufflers, these two new options in the Eclipse finish feature the same 2½-inch double-wrapped perforate core baffle, which is able to accept the brand’s tuning inserts. The baffle is what produces the signature Khrome Werks tone, sounding deep and authoritative, with no trace of annoying high-frequency notes.

In addition to the great looks and sound, these mufflers also offer an instant boost in torque and horsepower. For riders looking to add other custom touches to their bike, Khrome Werks also has new Edge grips available for throttle-by-wire applications. Previously, these grips were only offered for cable setups. Like the cable applications, these TBW Edge grips come in two styles – the sleek Custom Contour and the extra-comfortable Air Cushion. The Edge grips are designed to complement a bike fitted with a Khrome Werks HP-Plus muffler topped with an Edge endcap. Both the grips and the endcaps feature a slash cut for a distinctive punch of style. Of course, the grips look great on their own, too, making them a smart custom choice for any bike. They are available in contrastcut black or chrome. Designed for both looks and longevity, the Edge grips are made to be durable without being hard on the hands. Like the mufflers, the Edge grips are backed by the Khrome Werks lifetime warranty. Riders who have the Khrome Werks Tracer or Turbine muffler endcaps can get grips to match those styles, as well. ■

Gaskets for Milwaukee-Eights

GASKETS

Designed for Big-Bore Builds

Cometic’s gaskets for Milwaukee-Eight big-bore kits are compatible with a range of bore sizes – from minor upgrades to big horsepower engine builds.

I

n this story, Cometic’s Jason Moses walks us through the design details of the brand’s latest gaskets for Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight big-bore gaskets.

Since the inception of the Milwaukee-Eight, Cometic has consistently made changes to its M-8 big-bore head and base gaskets to provide the best possible sealing solution. There are some key points to note when planning a big-bore project for a customer. First, determine if the engine is oil-cooled or coolant-cooled. This will greatly affect how big of a bore you can use before head modifications are necessary. Let’s start with the popular 4.250-inch big bore. Cometic has developed a head gasket that will work on both oilcooled and coolant-cooled engines with no modifications to the head surface. When looking at part numbers 0934-5943 and 0934-5944 in the diagram, you can see the embossment traps both oil and coolant with one embossment. The red teardrop-shaped hole is where an oil-cooled hole falls in the embossment. The two blue holes show where the coolant holes fall in the embossment. Next up is the 4.320-inch big bore. Again, Cometic has developed another gasket with a different design to seal off both the oil and coolant. As the bore gets larger, it is no lon-

ger possible to offer individual embossing for the bore and the oil hole. As you can see, the one cooling embossment is siamesed/joined into the bore embossment (see part numbers 0934-5948 and 0934-5949). This design offers superior sealing and requires no head surface modifications to either oil-cooled or coolant-cooled engines. Again, you can see where the holes in the head align with the Cometic embossing design. It is critical to note that the 4.320-inch is the largest bore you can put in an oil-cooled engine without modifying an oil-cooled head. Finally, we arrive at the 4.500-inch extra-big bore. This is a mammoth bore, so large that an oil-cooled engine requires the oil hole in the head to be plugged or welded, since this hole now falls into the cylinder bore. This must be done to all oil-cooled heads or catastrophic engine damage will occur. Once the oil holes are modified, you can use the 4.500-inch head gasket on the oil-cooled heads. Now, since the coolant-cooled holes are set so far back, you can actually use the 4.500-inch head gasket with no modifications to the head surface. See part numbers 0934-5955 and 0934-5956 to get a look at how this is achieved. ■

HANDLEBARS

Touring Bike Upgrades

New Fitments for EZ Install Handlebars Customers with 2021-2022 Harley-Davidson Touring bikes can now upgrade their bikes with Fat Baggers’ EZ Install handlebars. The bars are available in a variety of sizes and styles.

F

at Baggers Inc. has expanded its EZ Install handlebar lineup to add more part numbers and fitments for all 2021 to 2022 Harley-Davidson Touring bikes, including Electra Glide, Road Glide, Road King and Street Glide models. As before, FBI’s EZ Install bars are available as single part numbers or in kit form for a quick-and-easy installation. As the name implies, the EZ Install Handlebars a cinch to mount onto any Harley Touring model from 1986 up to and including 2022. In particular, FBI’s EZ Install Handlebar kits include all the necessary components for a complete custom high-rise handlebar conversion that lends to the Performance Bagger styling trend so popular today. Kits include mid-cable extensions (4-inch, 6-inch or 8-inch) for models using cable-operating clutches. The mid-cable extensions are also sold separately and can be used for other custom handlebar applications.

The EZ Install bars feature a unique two-piece design and are built with internally machined cavities that let your shop techs pull wiring harnesses with ease.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

JUNE 2022

Drag Specialties offers the EZ Install handlebars in all three styles – Flat Top, Round Top and Pointed Top. Handlebars can be sold individually, or as a complete installation kit with specific height dimensions for each motorcycle model. The EZ Install handlebars are available in either 1½-inch or 1¼-inch diameter mandrel-bent tubing. Finishes include Chrome or Gloss Black, and bar heights come in the following sizes 10 inches, 11 inches, 12 inches, 14 inches and 16 inches. That “EZ Install” name indicates just how easy it is to swap a Harley’s original handlebars for these FBI handlebars thanks to their unique design features. By placing large internally machined cavities at the top corners of each bar, a shop technician can easily pull the wiring harness through the handlebars without damaging the wiring itself. Pulling wires through takes only minutes, leading to quick shop turnaround time for the owner’s bike. In addition, the patented two-piece handlebar is compact in size, so its packaging requires minimal shelf space when placed in a dealership’s inventory. Fat Baggers’ mid clutch cable extensions led to another useful item that Drag Specialties will welcome, a clutch cable adjustor upgrade/repair kit for late-model Softail (2018-2022) and Touring models (2021-2022). FBI’s Clutch Cable Fix converts the OEM upper cable adjuster to a screw type adjuster, while reinforcing the cable in the process. As such, the Clutch Cable Fix serves as a repair component for broken OEM adjustor stems and clips. It also works with stock cables and, of course, with the company’s EZ Clutch Cable Extensions. The new Clutch Cable Fix and all EZ Install handlebars are made here in the USA. ■

New Wheels Allow OE Functions

WHEELS

Cool Coastal Customs

The Marlin 3D is the newest edition to Coastal Moto’s cast wheel lineup. It’s available in Chrome, Black Cut and Solid Black.

C

oastal Moto recently expanded its popular line of forged and cast custom 3D wheels for HarleyDavidson’s Touring models. The newest edition is Coastal Moto’s Marlin 3D, a cast wheel that also adapts Harley’s ABS and TPMS so that customers customizing their Touring bikes can retain those two popular safety features. Specifically, and like Coastal Moto’s existing line of 3D custom wheels that include the Largo, Atlantic and Hurricane, the new Marlin 3D is compliant with OE anti-lock braking systems equipped on 2008-2022 Touring models. That feature is not lost when mounting the custom wheels to a Harley. The 3D wheels, however, are not inclusive to ABS-equipped Harleys only; Coastal Moto’s wheels are also compatible with non-ABS motorcycles. Drag Specialties dealers are advised to check with their Drag reps for exact fitment applications when selecting which 3D model to use. The Marlin 3D also brings something new to Coastal Moto’s lineup – It can easily adapt the stock TPMS sensors as originally equipped on specific OE wheel options, allowing that feature to be retained when customizing a late-model Harley Bagger. Mounting the TPMS sensors to the custom wheel takes little time, and each wheel comes with its own installation kit and instructions. During the course of the Marlin 3D’s development, Coastal Moto also updated all of its forged and cast ABS wheels for TPMS compatibility. Now Coastal Moto’s entire forged and cast 3D line – including the Largo, Atlantic, Hurricane and the new Marlin – accept not only ABS, but also the popular and convenient TPMS option.

The Marlin 3D allows customers to easily adapt the stock TPMS sensors as originally equipped on specific stock wheel options, allowing that feature to be retained when customizing a late-model Harley-Davidson Bagger.

Coastal Moto’s TPMS installation kits provide quick and easy mounting, too. For marketing purposes, the update prompted Coastal Moto to identify all the current 3D wheel variations as “ABST.” Because the current 3D lineup address fitment for latemodel Harley Touring models only, they’re available in specific front and rear sizes – 21˝ x 3.5˝ (front) and 18˝ x 5.5˝ (rear). The solitary front size fits all Touring models from 2000-2022; the rear fits 2009-2022 Touring models. Design styles for 3D wheels include three finishes – Chrome, Black Cut and Solid Black. ■

Handgrips Built for Relief

T

he comfort factor is important to touring riders and their passengers. Experienced riders, especially, understand this, which is why many Harley-Davidson Touring bike owners are particular about which handgrips they prefer when all-day rides turn into something often many miles longer. It’s no wonder that many touring riders choose Avon Grips’ Memory Foam handgrips. And, for good reason. Avon Grips’ Memory Foam is a full-stem handgrip that is available in Small, Medium and Large diameters to fit almost any rider’s palms so that minimal hand pressure is required while holding onto the handgrip itself. The result? Less fatigue to the rider’s hands and forearms during a long ride. Perhaps the real benefit in Avon Grips’ popular Memory Foam grips is in the foam itself, which is a dense, yet pliable, composite that easily conforms to the rider’s closed palm throughout the ride. Moreover, the foam is resistant to most chemicals, so it remains durable to squelch any vibration that finds its way through the

High-Efficiency Spark Plugs for Harley-Davidsons

ACCEL HP Copper Core spark plugs are more conductive than iridium and allow for a hotter spark and better combustion.

H

arley-Davidson factory ignition system components tend to not only leave some performance on the table, but could even be subject to performance decline over time. ACCEL has addressed voltage and resistance issues with its range of coils and plug wires, but what good is that upgrade without proven, efficient spark plugs? ACCEL HP Copper Core spark plugs are the product of continuous evolvement through on-hand testing and development. The copper material is more conductive than iridium or some other exotic materials, allowing

consistent generation of a considerably hotter spark, the company claims. This lets the combustion flame expand more rapidly, translating to more efficient power. ACCEL has achieved this through its proprietary C-Cut ground strap and electrode design, providing the flame an unblocked area to grow above the electrode midpoint for a more complete burn. This also helps reduce the “quenching effect” caused by excess heat absorption, lowering the chances of plug-induced rough idle and misfiring. While many Harley riders can reap the performance and fuel efficiency benefits of ACCEL HP Copper Core spark plugs, your Twin Cam customers especially can enjoy peace of mind knowing these spark plugs have been tested by ACCEL to work effectively with the sometimes-sensitive ignition systems on those engine models. Some may be surprised at how much fresh plugs and wires can wake up a bike, especially those over the 20,000-mile mark. ■

Sintered Brake Pads for Stopping Performance

G

alfer USA has a compound for every kind of riding, whether it’s just a casual rider or a pro putting their bike through its paces. And when it comes to brake pads for V-Twins, Galfer’s HH Sintered ceramic pads offer optimal performance and predictability. As V-Twins have gotten more powerful and more capable, it was inevitable that there would be a need for brake pads with matching performance features. Galfer’s HH Sintered pads are made from advanced ceramic composites that can withstand higher temperatures than the semi-metallic carbon pads that a bike is typically equipped with. What that means is that riders who prefer a more aggressive riding style can rest easy knowing that their brake pads provide consistent stopping power even as the braking system heats up. Brake fade will be a thing of the past. The HH friction rating for the sintered pads translates to excellent braking feel and modulation. Great heat recovery ensures a consistent braking setup throughout the lifespan of the pads. That heat recovery is due in part to a ceramiccoated backing plate, which helps dissipate heat.

When it comes to brake pads for V-Twins, Galfer’s HH Sintered ceramic pads offer optimal performance and predictability.

To make it even better, the pads are easy on brake rotors to further the longevity, predictability and performance of the bike’s braking system. Every set of performance pads deserves a performance rotor, and Galfer makes both WAVE and CUBIQ rotors for Harley-Davidson models. Galfer USA has HH Sintered front and rear brake pad applications for a wide range of Harley and Indian models. ■

Your customers who have a unique application can also enjoy DEI’s heat protection benefits with the Universal Heat Shield Liner Kits, each one featuring all the materials needed to create a custom heat shield liner. ■

Luggage for Wherever the Journey Leads

N

elson-Rigg gets riders ready to hit the road with its Route 1 cruiser collection, featuring a stylish, diverse luggage lineup for wherever the journey takes them. Whether it’s a day trip or a cross-country adventure, Route 1 has the bag for it.

The Route 1 collection is incredibly diverse. The Day Trip, Weekender and Destination backrest bags each get progressively larger. The spacious Traveler and Traveler Lite bags will mount to most Harley-Davidson Tour trunk racks. The Traveler Lite can be used as a stand-alone bag or a trunk liner: it fits inside all stock Harley trunks.

Nelson-Rigg’s extensive Route 1 luggage lineup.

Like all Nelson-Rigg textile luggage, the Route 1 collection’s solid construction is enhanced using the company’s exclusive UltraMax® fabric. This durable fabric has maximum UV protection to remain fade-free, ride after ride. Nelson-Rigg is so confident in UltraMax that the company’s lifetime warranty includes no color fading. Each Route 1 bag includes a 100 percent waterproof rain cover (except the Rover), a light gray interior, organizer pockets and reflective piping. Route 1 luggage has a universal fit, staying in place via heavy-duty webbing straps with quick release buckles and, for some bags, hook-and-loop backrest straps.

For Dyna/Softail riders, the Road Trip saddlebags have a throw-over style and include their own robust mounting brackets for a stylish yet secure ride. The Journey tank bag includes a touchscreenfriendly pocket. Riders who just need to stash a phone will like the Route 1 Cell Phone Holder. Even the family dog hasn’t been forgotten. The Rover pet carrier holds up to 20 pounds so furry friends ride along safely and comfortably. ■

A Pre-Trip Checklist

S

turgis is coming. Yes, we know you already know, and we know your customers already have it on their calendars, too. The question is, are your customers ready for the pre-trip preparation that comes first? Road trips take a lot of planning beyond setting a destination on the GPS and throwing a few clean t-shirts in the saddlebags. Luckily, Drag Specialties makes it easy for riders to get ready to go with minimal fuss. When it comes to having a smooth trip, the basics become a big deal. Not only do tires need to be in good shape, but the tire pressure needs to be correct, as well. The Drag Specialties tire pressure gauge is small enough to toss into luggage. Once the tires are in shape, it’s time to take a look at the brakes. A fresh set of pads, like the Drag Premium sintered metal pads for Harley-Davidson models, make sure stopping along the way is no problem. Sintered pads are more durable than stock brake pads, and they don’t produce any dust or noise. Drag has a wide range of V-Twin brake pad fitments and compounds, so riders can get the level of braking performance they want. Drag Specialties DOT 4 and DOT 5 Silicone brake fluid are universal brake/clutch fluids to top off the reservoirs before hitting the road.

Check out Drag Specialties’ range of luggage options, including the 4-inch extended OEM-style saddlebags.

The Drag Specialties tire pressure gauge is perfect for an on-the-road tool kit.

Engine items like oil and filters are always at the top of the pre-trip checklist. Drag’s V-Twin Premium Synthetic engine oil is specifically engineered for V-Twins. The synthetic base oil and select additives provide exceptional viscosity, stability and antioxidation characteristics. Drag has plenty of other V-Twin oil options, too.

Drag Specialties has a huge selection of engine oil and filters.

Fresh oil goes hand-in-hand with a fresh filter. There are tons of applications for Drag’s highquality spin-on oil filters, and chrome and black housings help riders match their bike’s style. If it’s time for a new air filter, too, Drag has options that include replacement and reusable ones. The air filters pair with the stock housings, making them an easy, affordable replacement. And, finally, it will be time for customers to load up their luggage and head out. Drag Specialties has plenty of luggage racks and saddlebag supports, as well as a range of hardware kits and replacement parts for luggage. Drag’s 4-inch extended OEM-style saddlebags are made of the same material as the OEM versions for seamless

integration. The saddlebags are strong and easy to paint, making them a great way to add both more storage space and a custom look. Since they accept all OEM or aftermarket lids, they are a versatile option, too. Of course, Drag also has OEM-style saddlebag lids available to complete the look. ■

Once the bike is freshened up and the luggage is properly secured and balanced, it’s time for Sturgis. Find it all in the FatBook, the OldBook and the Tire & Service catalog.
