’m sure you will all agree, it is going to be great to be returning to Madison, Wisconsin in August for the revival of the annual Drag Specialties NVP Product Expo. Seems like such a long time ago since the last one. It was August 2019 and none of us had ever heard the word Coronavirus … Masks were only worn on Halloween … The average price for a gallon of gas nationwide was $2.88 a gallon (all blends) and there was no such thing as Bagger Racing. So here we are three years later. Not only have we heard of Coronavirus, some of us had it, maybe even lost friends or family members from it; masks aren’t required in most places any more, but most of us still have a few around; and gas prices have doubled. And Yes! Bagger Racing was born since the last Madison NVP. Many laughed when Rob Buydos started talking to people at the 2019 Drag Dealer Ride in Tucson about his crazy idea to start racing Baggers. The chuckles and wisecracks continued pretty much all the way until the bikes got on the track at Laguna Seca and then Rob’s vision came into focus. Today, in 2022, Bagger racing is on the schedule for both the Bagger Racing League and in the MotoAmerica national racing series. One of our writers, Jean Turner, said it best at the start of her report about MotoAmerica’s 2022 Bagger races to date: “A radical idea that became a national phenomenon has now found a permanent place…” Read her full report starting on page 18. As for the Bagger Racing League, check out Marilyn Stemp’s report in the News about the BRL’s season kickoff in Utah in May. The BRL races are strictly V-Twin events with all sorts of classes for Big Twins, Sportsters, Indians versus Harleys and more. MotoAmerica is only halfway thru its six-race Mission King of the Baggers series, so much more action yet to come this season, as well as the Bagger Racing League with its next race in September right in Milwaukee during the Homecoming Rally. Lastly, our preview of the NVP, officially titled this year as the North American NVP Product Expo starts on page 20. As was done back in 2019, our friends from Parts Canada are also participating in the event and we will welcome them and many of their dealers who will be attending. ■ Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Ride Safe!

T

he great weather that greeted race fans, riders and sponsors at Utah Motorsports Campus was rare for a day in May for the Bagger Racing League Drag Specialties Battle of the Baggers, presented by Custom Dynamics. When the venue opened on Friday, May 13 those teams itching to practice set up with gusto and got going. By Saturday morning more race rigs had appeared and the pits were pulsing with activity and anticipation. A quick walk past the pit garages revealed teams out in force. Alloy Art, Bassani Xhaust, Feuling, Nowasky Extreme Performance, Quaid’s Harley-Davidson, Saddlemen/Lloydz Garage, Slyfox, Suburban Harley-Davidson, and Trask Performance and other recognizable names were on the scene along with a slew of regional privateers campaigning teams and bringing their following with them. of the Bagger Racing League, was brimming with positivity. “We have incredible weather and racer turnout at the track for our kickoff race of 2022,” he said. When racing commenced on Saturday afternoon, a quick look at the sponsor names supporting the classes revealed that Buydos and his team had been hard at work bringing on industry partners of note. In the weekend’s premier Custom Dynamics Bagger GP class some of the biggest names in the sport proved they came to race. Ben Bostrom led early on the Feuling Road Glide until he was passed for the lead and eventual win by Shane Narbonne on the Trask Turbo Road Glide; they’d been running strong all weekend. Rounding out the podium was Bostrom in 2nd, and Hawk Mazzotta on the Nowaskey Road Glide in 3rd.

In the NAMZ Big Twin class, the BRL’s biggest class in turnout every time, an incredible battle ensued between three racers all riding for Quaid Harley-Davidson. AMERICAN V-TWIN – BRAKE PADS FOR ALL RIDING STYLES

GO AHEAD

In the ICON Lightweight Twins, Supercross rider Carson Brown joined BRL for his first-ever road race - and won on the Suburban Harley-Davidson XR1200.

Already a veteran of the growing Bagger Racing scene, rider Cory West lofts his championship belt high after winning the F/S Cup aboard the Saddlemen/Lloydz Garage/Indian of Charlotte FTR.

Stoking the fires of the Harley vs. Indian wars, the FS Cup was so named using an F for FTR and S for Sportster S – but then the H-D ride of choice morphed into the Pan America. Though it’s a smaller class it’s filled with top talent. Cory West, on the Saddlemen/Lloydz Garage/Indian of Charlotte FTR, smoothly won the class. After briefly leading, Alloy Art’s Kory Cowan put in an amazing ride to finish in the number two spot. And, Benny Carlson, who continues to rack up solid rides for Suburban Harley-Davidson/Custom Dynamics, finished 3rd.

The Cobra ATU class, debuting here, was a real melting pot of Harleys vs. Indians with everything from Baggers to Livewires on the track. When the dust settled, familiar faces were on the podium. In first was Kory Cowen on the Alloy Art Pan America, second place finish went to Benny Carlson on the Suburban Harley/ Custom Dynamics Pan Am, and Ravi Patel on the Quaid’s Harley Big Twin was third. A tip of the helmet to “The Flagman” Robert Lawrence, whose energy and distinctive style is a show on its own. The next Battle of the Baggers happens September 2-4, 2022 at the Milwaukee Mile during the Homecoming Rally. “The series is very excited to showcase our singular brand of roadracing in Milwaukee; Harley vs. Indian with six challenging classes,” Buydos said. “Hope to see everybody there!” ■

King of the Baggers

ROAD TO VICTORY Photos by Brian J. Nelson

Harley-Davidson rider Travis Wyman (#10) rolls into the pits after his career-first King of the Baggers victory at Road America.

Travis Wyman (#10) led his defending champion brother and Harley teammate Kyle Wyman (#1) during the weather-shortened four-lap sprint.

A

radical idea that became a national phenomenon has now found a permanent place on the undercard of MotoAmerica, the premier North American Road Race Championship. Perhaps it’s the thrill of thundering V-Twins on the steep banks of Daytona International Raceway, or the allure a new arena for the ageless Indian versus Harley-Davidson rivalry, or perhaps it’s watching an Indian Challenger rip a massive 12 o’clock wheelie down the straight at Road America (check Tyler O’Hara’s Instagram for that gem), but the ultra-heavyweight Mission King of the Baggers Series has continued to captivate the crowds this season. The 2022 King of the Baggers Championship is halfway through its six-round circuit within the MotoAmerica series, and after the Daytona doubleheader and stops at Road Atlanta and Road America, the battle for the crown is on. With four different winners in as many rounds, the field remains tight, and it’s anyone’s game. S&S Cycle Indian’s Tyler O’Hara started the season with three podium finishes, and as the only rider to land on the box at all three rounds, emerged as the standout leader after round three in Atlanta. But round four at Road America brought about a turn of fate for O’Hara, as well as for the HarleyDavidson Screamin’ Eagle Road Glides of Travis and Kyle Wyman. O’Hara’s podium streak ended with a fourth-place

finish in Wisconsin, while Travis Wyman nabbed the first win of his career, less than one second ahead of his defending champion brother, Kyle. Rainy conditions at Road America caused the King of the Baggers race to be shortened to a four-lap sprint. All eyes were on O’Hara, who nabbed the King of the Baggers Challenge win, and was looking to stretch his points lead. But it was H-D Screamin’ Eagle’s Travis who stepped into the limelight in Wisconsin, taking the lead all the way to the finish. Just one second off was his brother, Kyle, followed by Mission Foods/S&S Cycle Indian Challenger Team’s Jeremy McWilliams. “For me, (this win) is probably at least in the top three,” Travis said. “I never won a race on a Harley, ever. All those years on XR1200s, I podiumed. I was second and third in the championship. To get a win here, and especially at Road America, and see how many Harley fans and how many people from the factory are out here, it was a big moment, for sure.” The tides might have shifted toward the Harley riders, but they could shift back in the blink of an eye, just like we saw at the opening round at Daytona. It looked as though the Wyman brothers were headed for a one-two finish at the opener, but Travis and Kyle were both snaked on the final stretch by O’Hara, who drafted past them for the win in classic Daytona style.

Line 'em up. S&S Cycle/Indian rider Tyler O'Hara (#29) leads teammate Jeremy McWilliams (#99), Harley's Travis Wyman (#10) and Kyle Wyman (#1) into a turn.

Series points leader and Indian rider Tyler O'Hara nabbed the Mission King of the Baggers Challenge win.

O’Hara and his S&S Cycles teammate McWilliams managed to draft their way to the front once again in the second Daytona race, this time the Ulsterman taking the win over O’Hara, and Bobby Fong rounding out the all-Indian podium. It was a disappointing start to the season for defending champ Kyle Wyman, who DNF’d the second Daytona race. But he roared back to life at round three in Atlanta, taking the win followed by fellow Harley-Davidson rider James Rispoli, leaving O’Hara and McWiliams to claim third and fourth, respectively. Through the ups and downs in just four rounds, O’Hara remains the most consistent with top-four finishes across the board. He heads the championship standings at 74 points with his teammate McWilliams and the Screamin’ Eagle Harleys of the Wyman brothers lurking only a handful of points behind. With three more stops on the calendar and plenty more points to play for, the 2022 King of the Baggers Championship is still wide open.

Harley-Davidson rider Travis Wyman found himself on the top of the podium after his first King of the Baggers win, with brother Kyle Wyman in the runner-up position, followed by Indian rider Jeremy McWilliams.

the globe. To keep that train a-rollin’, in 2018 LA Choppers released the innovative Kage Fighter T-Bars, a favorite handlebar for Dyna Bros and Wheelie Monsters looking for some precise control and style as they’re ripping down roads, highways and twisties.

LA Choppers knows a lot about this ebb and flow. Founded during the modern chopper craze of the late ’90s – the source of the company’s name – LA Choppers has continuously worked at designing and manufacturing American-made products that exist at the leading edge of current trends. Not content to simply chase V-Twin style, fashion and function, the company prefers to blaze its own path.

If a particular product is in demand by the vast and varied VTwin community, the team at LA Choppers strives to supply it! And no matter the style or the trend, those products will be American made. LA Choppers guarantees it.

It was during that chopper resurgence that LA Choppers launched one of the most popular handlebars in the company’s lineup – the Twin Peaks – a product that remains a staple for Harley-Davidson Touring bike riders around

With Performance Baggers and other go-fast, handle-well and look-great-doing-so bikes dominating the custom V-Twin scene, LA Choppers is front and center and paying attention. RIGHT: There are also applications for LA Choppers speedometer mounts for the 2018 and up Softail digital housing, and the speedos used on 2015 and up Road Glides.

However, going fast is about much more than just hopping up a big motor. There are so many other factors to consider when going this route. Is the suspension set up to handle the extra handling and performance? Are the tires the correct choice for really hooking up to the pavement? What rotors and brakes are being used to stop that beast? In the rider cockpit, things get even more precise. How strong are the risers? How wide is the bar? What setup is your customer using for finessing and controlling that biginch monster? This is one of the more important questions: If your customer can’t get a grip on all that power with the right products, what’s the point? Good thing the team at LA Choppers can delivers the goods when the goods mean performance and control. The company’s new Performance Riser line is just what those hot-rod riders need.

The risers are CNC machined from billet aluminum at the LA Choppers headquarters in Huntington Beach, California. They are available in two finishes – raw aluminum or black anodized for that industrial feel. The risers have a substantial footprint at the base, and they gradually get wider towards the clamp. This gives the risers an edgy look and, more importantly, intense structural integrity. The Performance Risers come in 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch rises, with both straight and 2-inch pull-back options from which to choose. Whether your customer is running a 1-inch bar or a 1¼-inch bar, LA Choppers has them covered with risers that match both clamping diameters. Want a little icing on that cake? The Performance Riser kits feature 12-point hardware for that in-demand look and function. With the handling situation all squared away, let’s turn our attention to clocking the speed during those, ahem, spirited

Bright Future

Celebrating 20 Years of LED Leadership

In addition to that website how-to book, Dave also had a degree in electrical engineering and a passion for motorcycles. His dream of designing and selling high-quality LED motorcycle lighting quickly blossomed into a retail location and a team of employees.

Custom Dynamics founder Dave Pribula was a one-man operation when the company first got its start 20 years ago. The company grew steadily and, after teaming up with Drag Specialties, expanded into an LED-lighting powerhouse with a 22,000 square-foot headquarters and a team of engineers, sales professionals and technical and customer support members.

By 2010, Custom Dynamics had significantly increased its catalog of motorcycle lighting solutions and was ready to expand on a national level. Teaming up with Drag Specialties meant Custom Dynamics was suddenly more accessible to riders than ever, since they could simply walk into their local dealership and find the right LED lighting for their bike.

O

n Christmas Eve in 2002, someone was doing some last-minute online shopping. When they submitted an order through the Custom Dynamics website, they became the fledgling company’s first customer. Now Custom Dynamics is speeding toward its 20th anniversary later this year, and things look a whole lot different now than they did on that night in 2002. For one thing, the company’s website is no longer a DIY site made with a how-to book and a lot of determination. Back then, founder Dave Pribula was handling everything – from lighting design to web design – out of his home office in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

With so many new products and the expanded reach, Custom Dynamics has long since outgrown its former retail location. Today, the company is in Youngsville, North Carolina, housed in a 22,000 square-foot headquarters. Dave now has an entire team of engineers, too, since all Custom Dynamics products are designed in house. Since its inception, Custom Dynamics has always aimed to implement the latest LED and lighting technology into its products. In 2018, the company introduced the ProBEAM LED product line. This high-tech series of lighting solutions includes cutting-edge LED light pipe products. Light pipes provide a constant line of color rather than a row of individual LED bulbs for a smooth, bright, stylish glow. The ProBEAM line includes turn signals, taillights and headlamps. Most recently, Custom Dynamics introduced the ProBEAM LED Tour Pak Light. Three LED light pipes replace the stock LEDs on a Tour Pak, providing a brilliantly

bright, more attractive look. There are also LEDs on the sides of the TourPak for increased side visibility. When talking about Custom Dynamics, it’s natural to focus on all the technology that goes into producing its high-quality LED products. The products, though, are only half of the story. Since its inception, Custom Dynamics has focused on providing outstanding customer service. Custom Dynamics has become a big company, but the team there still has the same small-shop approach to personal service. A customer service and technical support staff is on hand to help dealers and customers alike, offering assistance with things like choosing the right fitment and installation tips. Those who prefer typing to talking on the phone can opt to reach customer service via e-mail, web chat or an online request form. In addition to outstanding customer service and technical support, Custom Dynamics also prides itself on its expansive lifetime warranty, covering all of its LED products and electrical modules. When a customer or dealer has a warranty claim, they can submit photos for evaluation instead of going through the process and expense of shipping an item to Custom Dynamics. Of course, the shipping option is available, too, for those who prefer it. The team at Custom Dynamics aims to remedy a warranty claim on the same business day. By responding so quickly, high-volume dealers are able to pull product from new stock to get the customer taken care of quickly, then work with Custom Dynamics to receive a warranty replacement.

CUSTOM DYNAMICS

Since its inception, Custom Dynamics has offered the latest LED and lighting technology into its products. In 2018, the company introduced the ProBEAM LED product line, which includes turn signals, taillights and headlamps.

Many dealers probably already know the Custom Dynamics National Sales Team. National Sales Manager Kyle Hoffman and National Sales Rep Rob Malenfant spend their days on the road, visiting dealerships with Drag reps, attending events and providing training. Kyle and Rob also host webinars to provide training on new products and display programs, making it easier than ever for dealers to tap into their expertise. Not surprisingly, the next big event on the calendar for Custom Dynamics is Sturgis. This year, Custom Dynamics will have an extensive setup at Black Hills Harley-Davidson to provide both sales and installations during the rally. From there, Custom Dynamics will be heading to the North American NVP in Madison, Wisconsin, giving dealers another great opportunity to learn more about the company and its latest products. While the sales team is busy on the road, the design team is busy in Youngsville. Custom Dynamics is continuing to expand its product catalog not only for Harley-Davidsons, but also for Indian models. Additionally, Custom Dynamics is adding products to its UTV and SXS lineup. Things have come a long way since that first Christmas Eve order 20 years ago. ■

Headlamp Solutions for Sportsters Designed specifically for Dyna, Softail and Sportster models, this light bar has a mounting bracket that uses the triple tree and factory headlamp mounting bolt. The light bar essentially acts as a second headlight, and it is actually brighter than the stock lamp thanks to its six bright-white, high-power LEDs.

Custom Dynamics offers 5.75-inch headlamp upgrades, with or without a built-in halo. Sportster riders wanting extra bright illumination should check out the ProBEAM 5.75inch headlamp. It is available in both a standard and adaptive version. Custom Dynamics High Power LED Driving Light Bar acts as a second headlight, and is actually brighter than the stock lamp thanks to its six brightwhite, highpower LEDs.

S

maller motorcycle models, like the HarleyDavidson Sportster S, are a lot of fun to ride, but it’s not just the motorcycle that’s smaller. Larger bikes, like Touring models, typically have a 7-inch headlamp plus passing lamps, but bikes like the Sportster come equipped with just a 5.75-inch headlamp. Many riders will want to upgrade their lighting setup for better visibility. That is where Custom Dynamics comes in, with a range of 5.75-inch headlamp upgrades as well as supplemental lighting for Sportsters and other smallmodel bikes. These products let a rider see farther down the road and improve side-to-side coverage. Smaller models don’t have typical mounting points like crash bars and fairings, which means adding lighting can be a bit tricky. Unless, of course, a customer opts for the Custom Dynamics High Power LED Driving Light Bar.

Custom Dynamics also offers 5.75-inch headlamp upgrades, with or without a built-in halo. The projection-style high and low beam is combined with advanced optical D lenses to produce a smooth, bright white beam pattern as well as an outstanding field of vision. The low beam remains illuminated even when the high beam is activated. The halo also remains illuminated at all times.

Sportster riders who want the brightest, widest view of the road ahead will want to choose the ProBEAM 5.75-inch headlamp. It is available in both a standard and adaptive version.

The standard headlamp remains stationary, while the adaptive one moves with the bike. This cutting-edge technology from J.W. Speaker provides maximum ditch-to-ditch light output where it’s most needed. Adaptive technology enables the light to sense when the bike is leaning so it can redirect the beam to illuminate dark corners while also providing a superior beam pattern 1,500 feet down the road. The real-time redirection is achieved by calculating bank angles using proprietary technology and on-board sensors, automatically directing the light array up or down as the motorcycle leans while on both high and low beam. The ProBEAM lights themselves use advanced engineering and technology, too, producing a sleek, low-profile design with incredible light output. The low beam has three high-power advanced optical D lenses and a position light, while the high beam adds another two LEDs with a D lens and three LEDs with projector lenses. The result is maximum light coverage and brilliant illumination when the high beam is activated. The ProBeam 5.75-inch headlamps are available in a Chrome or True Black finish for the die-cast aluminum housing. ■

SEATS

Another Step Up

A Seat Made for Performance and Comfort

Saddlemen revamped its popular performance-oriented Step-Up seat to appeal to passengers during two-up riding. The Tour Step-Up features a pillion seating area that is wider than the original and features the proprietary SaddleGel technology.

S

ince its introduction, the Step-Up seat has been a popular seller for Saddlemen. The Step-Up was designed to give a rider both premium comfort and ergonomics that offer a solid footing for showing off. One only has to find YouTube videos of freestyle riders putting the Step-Up through its paces to know the seat can handle just about anything a rider throws at it. There was just one problem with the Step-Up – passengers complained that it wasn’t very comfortable. The truth is that Saddlemen didn’t really design the Step-Up with passengers in mind, since most customers were riding solo with it. It was initially introduced as a high-performance, stunt-oriented seat. Still, the deep driver seating area, bold styling and big comfort made the Step-Up attractive to riders who wanted to use the seat for more than simply performing. Saddlemen got to work designing a seat that could still perform while also providing comfort for both the driver and passenger. The result is the new Tour Step-Up. This seat has all the same great features as the original StepUp, but with added perks for the passenger, too.

46

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2022

The passenger seating area is approximately 4 inches wider than the original, and it comes stock with Saddlemen’s proprietary SaddleGel in that area. (The Step-Up only features that comfort touch in the rider seating area.) With a more comfortable seating area for the passenger, the Tour Step-Up is ideal for customers who want that high-performance styling coupled with all-around comfort. Whether a rider is pushing a bike to its limits or off on a long-distance, two-up trip, the Tour Step-Up offers the best of both worlds. The Tour Step-Up seat is available to fit the popular V-Twin models, and it comes in various options, like with Saddlemen’s seamless tuck-and-roll finish or lattice stitching. In fact, the Tour Step-Up can be fully customized through Saddlemen’s custom seat program. The Step-Up is already a popular seat for customizing, and there is little doubt that the Tour Step-Up will be, too. The Saddlemen custom seat program is designed to give Drag Specialties dealers an easy, efficient way to offer their customers a truly unique seat. It all starts with a form – the dealer chooses the form for the seat style being customized,

SADDLEMEN

fills it out according to the customer’s wishes and submits it to Drag Specialties like any other order. From there, Drag passes the custom seat request on to Saddlemen, who provide the dealer with a price before building the seat and shipping it directly to the dealer. That’s really all there is to it. The Tour Step-Up will have its own dedicated customization form. A diagram of the seat will clearly note where a customer can add a personal touch. They can choose the material for the chassis and accent panels, the color of the stitching, the stitching style and even the color of the stitched Saddlemen logo. Customers who want a truly unique seat can submit the artwork for custom embroidery, too. That option is especially good for clubs whose members want to add a logo on their seats, or even for dealers who want to add their logo to a custom bike. Progressive density ProFoam and SaddleGel can be found under both the driver and passenger seating areas of the Tour Step-Up. ProFoam finds the right balance between support and compliance by combining foam made of varied cell sizes and types. It is all held in place by a skin that resists outside elements and seals the foam from water. SaddleGel is at the heart of Saddlemen’s Gel-Core Technology, which is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy from the road. SaddleGel and ProFoam combine to allow a seat to conform to the rider’s body, reducing pressure points and eliminating the “hot spots” that cause discomfort. When compared to a stock foam seat, a seat with Gel-Core Technology enables a rider to comfortably stay on the road up to 400 percent longer while generating up to 92 percent less road shock and 50 percent less road vibration. All of that means the Tour Step-Up is as comfortable as it is capable, making it an extremely versatile seat. ■

TIRES

Team Effort

The Benefits of Co-Developing a Tire

The MICHELIN Scorcher 31 is OE on the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide, as well as on select Sportster XL models, and the OE-approved replacement for most Touring bikes.

The MICHELIN Scorcher 11 tires features some technology directly derived from road racing, so customers get the longevity of a street tire and the performance handling capabilities of a road race tire.

M

ichelin reps will sometimes hear consumers say how much they love the Michelin tires on their pick-up truck, but they hadn’t stopped to consider Michelin tires for their motorcycle. What those consumers don’t realize is that the same quality and technologies found in the one style of tire is found in the other. The ability to share materials and technology breakthroughs across varied industries is a huge benefit when it comes to designing a Michelin tire, whether it’s for a truck or a motorcycle. The MICHELIN Scorcher tire line had an even bigger pool of expertise to draw from since it is co-developed and co-branded with Harley-Davidson. The collaboration began in 2007, marking the first time Michelin has co-branded a tire with an OEM. The result of this joint venture is a range of tires that provide the performance riders expect from both their Harleys and their tires. The MICHELIN Scorcher tire line now includes five options, including the MICHELIN Scorcher Adventure and Sport as well as the MICHELIN Scorcher 11, 21 and 31. Every MICHELIN Scorcher tire is homologated and approved as factory-fitted original equipment or approved as a replacement tire by Harley-Davidson. This assures riders that they are getting the performance, handling and styling that the teams at both Michelin and Harley-Davidson demand. Customers who are replacing their OE MICHELIN Scorcher tires are guaranteed to get the same feel and feedback since it’s the same exact tire.

The MICHELIN Scorcher 31 is designed to deliver long and even treadwear from its carbon black-enriched tread compound. It is OE for the Sport Glide and select Dyna and Sportster XL models, and it has the distinction of being the Harley-Davidson-approved replacement for most Touring bikes. Available in seven front and five rear sizes, the MICHELIN Scorcher 31 is designed for comfort and confidence. Michelin had touring in mind when engineering the MICHELIN Scorcher 31 – it was designed for exceptional handling on winding roads, the tread increases grip in both wet and dry conditions and the casing is designed for riding comfort even on the longest days in the saddle. The MICHELIN Scorcher 11 tire is OE on Street 500 and 750, Sportster XL 1200 Superlow, Softail and V-Rod models. Michelin’s radial technology is combined with a tread pattern designed to perform in both wet and dry conditions. The semi-slick tread pattern maximizes the contact patch for great grip in the dry, but the grooves are optimized to evacuate water for optimal wet-weather riding, too. Certain properties of the tread compounds are derived from Michelin’s extensive development in racing, so the longevity of a street tire is partnered with the wet and dry grip capabilities of a road race bike. With six front and six rear tire sizes available, the MICHELIN Scorcher 11 is a versatile tire with outstanding handling and grip. ■

Thunder in the Night

Uncorking Harley’s Newest Sportster performance and technology, but as with most stock bikes it still needs a little more sound and style. Enter the Grand National slip-on exhaust, designed by S&S’s performance gurus to offer a thunderous sound that’s tunable to suit the situation. The Grand National has a stainless-steel dB reducer that tames the exhaust note without totally neutering it. Ready to ride out to a rally? With a few bolts the reducer pops out, unmuzzling the Grand National’s full bark. A livelier exhaust sound is nice, but the Grand National also offers a healthy dose of style. Modeled after the mufflers run on Harley’s iconic flat track machines, this exhaust has a fat 4½-inch can finished with an aluminum end cap featuring machined reliefs on the outside and a steep bevel on the inside. To give the Nightster a tidier, sportier look, the Grand National can is several inches shorter than the stock exhaust, terminating at the edge of the brake disc instead of the edge of the rim. A perforated stainless-steel baffle runs the entire length of the muffler body, and is surrounded by S&S’s proprietary blend of packing for long-lasting performance.

The matte-black paint on the Grand National is a dead ringer for the factory exhaust finish, so the muffler meshes perfectly with the stock heat shield and S&S Cycle’s 4½-inch Grand National slip-on exhaust is a great upgrade over the headers. GRIPS

From Concept to Creation Introducing the TSC Bolt Grips

THRASHIN’ owner Lance Coury started from the ground up when designing and manufacturing the TSC Bolt Grips. They are all rubber, and have a thin diameter and soft compound.

T

here are a lot of grip options on the market, and THRASHIN Supply is adding one more to the mix. The new TSC Bolt Grips aren’t just a style upgrade, though. These grips were born from THRASHIN owner Lance Coury’s personal desire for a specific type of grip, and the final product is more than a year in the making. As a former freestyle motocrosser, Coury prefers the kind of grip he used while whipping and backflipping his 450 during stunt competitions. That means a slimmer, full-rubber grip which, as it turns out, is pretty rare in the V-Twin world. “Sportster grips are thinner and all rubber, so for years I would run those, and my friends would heckle me about using stock grips when every inch of the rest of my bike was custom,” says Coury Coury actually started laser-engraving the THRASHIN thunderbolt logo on the OEM Sportster grips he ran on his personal bikes, just for fun. “For years I wanted to do grips, but it’s a really big investment. But, about 18 months ago, we just decided to go for it,” he explains. They started out 3D printing their own molds and using cold-mold rubber from a Hollywood special effects store to make prototypes. It wasn’t long before the team realized they needed expert help, so they started working with a local injection-molding company to get the design dialed in.

52

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

AUGUST 2022

“They helped us come up with a compound with the softness and durability we wanted,” says Coury. “We actually changed the compound four tires during testing.” That testing consisted of tens of thousands of miles of riding including a team road trip to Sturgis, plus less conventional approaches like leaving prototypes on the roof of THRASHIN Supply headquarters in Southern California, “to see how the rubber held up to summer heat and sunlight,” says Coury. “We knew nothing about rubber when we started this project, but we learned a lot, and I’m really proud of what we ended up with.” What they ended up with was exactly the grip Lance Coury wanted for his own bikes, and isn’t that how so many products come into existence? The TSC Bolt Grips are all rubber, with a thin diameter and soft compound. The lightning bolt logos look rad, but also function to help absorb vibration and limit hand fatigue. To accommodate the clutch-side mounting strategy Harley uses on latemodel bikes, Coury’s team integrated a flange on the left grip so it securely locks into the stock housing. “If you have aftermarket controls, then the flange is easy to cut off,” Coury notes. The TSC Bolt Grips were carefully developed to fit a specific role. For those who have preferences similar to Lance’s, there’s now a grip for you. The TSC Bolt Grips are available in black, gray, green, brown, and red. ■

TIRES

Keeping Up with Demand

A Performance Tire for Modern V-Twins The rear Cruisetec tire is designed with long alternating grooves that are primarily designed to evenly distribute the pressure throughout the tire carcass. That way, the tire wears in a regular, even pattern across the entire surface. As the miles add up, the tire wears smoothly so the performance characteristics are maintained. The rear tire has a host of features designed to boost performance and stability, including dual-compound rubber. The center compound, which includes a unique plasticizer, is an ideal formula for V-Twins, providing good longevity as well as improved grip, strength and stability during straight-line riding.

Metzeler Cruisetec tires are ideal for V-Twin riders who want modern styling and high performance. It offers an ideal balance of performance, versatility and personality.

T

here is a high demand for a performance tire that can keep up with modern V-Twins, which means the Metzeler Cruisetec tire has been popular with both riders and dealers since its debut. Metzeler is continually expanding the size offerings, so everyone from Sportster riders to Touring enthusiasts on the largest Harley-Davidson and Indian models can benefit from the performance and longevity of the Metzeler Cruisetec tire. The Cruisetec profile is inspired by Metzeler’s sport-touring tire profiles, but still meaty enough to support the heavier V-Twins it was designed for. The shape of the profile features a higher curvature than is typical for a V-Twin tire. This steeper angle improves handling, providing plenty of stability in a straight line as well as in those side-to-side transitions. The profile is topped with a tread pattern that looks right at home on a V-Twin, but it’s not just for looks. The tread improves mechanical grip and water evacuation, and the front Cruisetec tire tread is designed to reduce chatter when ABS is engaged.

The Cruisetec’s tread pattern not only looks great, but also improves mechanical grip and water evacuation.

The softer shoulder compound of the rear Cruisetec tire is formulated with plasticizers and silica to give riders high grip levels both entering and in the corners. High amounts of silica can actually be found throughout both of the compounds in the rear tire, providing chemical grip for fast warm-up and improved traction, even in cold or wet conditions. The interior of the Cruisetec tire is also designed to give a V-Twin the support and cushioning it needs. The cords are stiffer, and there is more room for thicker rubber, which helps dampen the ride and reduce the floating feeling that riders can get when exiting turns under hard acceleration.

Metzeler Cruisetec tires

In addition to performance, Metzeler also kept mileage in mind when designing the Cruisetec, and the tire will match or even slightly exceed the mileage a rider can expect from an OEM V-Twin tire. In other words, the improved performance doesn’t come at the cost of longevity. ■

Exhaust Systems for the Low Rider ST

Bassani’s Ripper 2:1 Short System is now available for both the 2022 HarleyDavidson Low Rider ST as well as Sport Glide models.

The Ripper 2:1 Short System is already a popular seller for Bassani, and thanks to a special new bracket, the system is now available for both the 2022 Low Rider ST as well as Sport Glide models. The bracket allows the system to work with the bags on those models, so everything fits together neatly. The Ripper 2:1 Short System comes in both a stainless steel and a black version. The high-quality stainless steel system is made from a fully welded one-piece design for premium style and finish. The two-into-one stepped headers lead to a 10-inch upswept megaphone muffler. When it comes to sound, the Ripper 2:1 system produces a loud, aggressive tone that really amps up the experience when compared to the stock setup. The muffler includes a removable louvered baffle and a removable end cap. An advanced inner collector gives the Ripper 2:1 a performance boost, too, so the exhaust performs just as good as it looks and sounds.

Bassani also has a brand-new 2:1 stainless steel system built especially for the Low Rider ST. The system features stepped headers and a 4-inch stainless steel straight housing they call the “Super Bike” Muffler.

he Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST is one of the bikes everyone is talking about right now, and with good reason. However, while it’s a capable motorcycle and good-looking right off the showroom floor, there is always room for improvement with a stock bike. When it comes to upgrading the pipes on a 2022 Low Rider ST, Bassani has customers covered with two options that look and sound great. With just one aftermarket part, riders can give their Low Rider ST a big boost in style, rumble and performance.

ummer is here, which means your customers will be racking up the miles. Help them keep the ride going with regular maintenance using premium lubes from Maxima. Drag Specialties stocks three different grades of Maxima’s V-Twin engine oil plus gear and primary oil, as well as V-Twin fork oil and complete Oil Change Kits that include everything needed for a fluid and filter swap. Maxima’s most economical engine oil is its V-Twin Mineral oil, which incorporates Maxima’s own recipe of additives to ensure optimal engine protection. V-Twin Mineral is offered in 10W-40, 20W-50, 25W-60, 50WT, 60WT, and 70WT to suit a wide range of Harley models. For added protection, Maxima’s V-Twin Syn Blend oil in 20W-50 mixes in a quantity of synthetic, ester-based lubricant to enhance performance, while V-Twin Full Synthetic is mixed entirely from lab-made molecules for the purest and most refined lube possible. The synthetic esters in Syn Blend and Full Synthetic help the oil stick to surfaces for better lubrication at high engine speeds and temperatures, while a shear-stable polymer system provides excellent film thickness and viscosity stability across all operating temperatures. To keep the clutch, primary chain, and gears properly lubricated, Maxima has V-Twin Primary oil in a mineral blend and a full-synthetic formula. Both options ensure consistent clutch engagement across a wide range of temperatures, but for increased component protection and extended service intervals, the synthetic option is a better choice.

V-Twin Fork Oil

One of an engine’s most highly stressed components is the transmission, and Maxima’s V-Twin Transmission Oil is specifically formulated to keep gears protected and spinning smoothly. This robust, shear-stable formulation is designed for Harley-Davidson transmissions and V-Twin models without wet-clutches and includes extreme pressure and anti-wear additives. Oil may be the primary ingredient in an oil change, but your customers will also need an oil filter and a fresh drainplug O-ring. Maxima’s model-specific Quick-Change Kits include the appropriate quantity of oil as well as a new O-ring and one of Maxima’s Pro Filters in chrome or black. For a complete lube change, point your customers toward the Full Change kit. It has everything in the Quick-Change Kit plus transmission oil and primary oil so your customers can put fresh fluid in all sumps. Finally, don’t forget the fork! Replacing the fork oil is a maintenance item that’s easy to ignore, so make sure you remind your customers to swap it out every two years or so. Maxima’s V-Twin Fork Oil is available in 10WT (Type E) and 20WT (Type Heavy) for Harley applications. It features an advanced, Lubricinol-fortified formula that minimizes stiction and reduces running friction while minimizing foaming for consistent, long-lasting damping performance. To keep their engines running strong this summer, make sure your customers understand the importance of on-time oil changes, and point them toward Maxima’s lineup of premium lubes. ■

A New Way to Ride

Mods for Those who Don’t Just Cruise

Y

our customers are riding their Harley-Davidson Softail and Touring models in new and aggressive ways, and they’re demanding better handling and more dialed-in performance than riders of the past. Performance Machine appreciates those riders’ concerns, and has a catalog of quality components to improve the way your customers’ bikes fit and function. Here’s a preview of some of PM’s latest offerings.

MID CONTROLS

Mid controls

Performance Machine’s mid controls are a great upgrade for Milwaukee-Eight Touring and Softail models when twisty road riding is the goal. These mid controls position the rider in a more aggressive stance and increase ground clearance, allowing deeper lean angles while cornering. Made from 6061-T6 billet aluminum for strength and lightness, these slick mids offer a simple bolt-on design so there’s no need to cut or modify the bike’s primary cover. (The kit will not fit with stock Touring exhaust systems, and a Primary Shift Shaft Plug Kit is required for M8 Softails converting from stock mid controls.) Use the mid controls with a PM rear brake master cylinder or the stock master cylinder. Steel brake linkage and chrome Heim joints offer easy brake actuation and the short-throw shift lever lets your customers click through the gears quicker.

PHATBAR AND RISER KIT Phatbar and Riser Kit

Customizing a bike’s fit is a great way to boost rider comfort and confidence. The Performance Machine Phatbar and Riser Kit fits most Harley models and positions PM’s burly 3-inch rise aluminum handlebar atop a set of 9-inch

billet-aluminum risers that are available with external or internal wire routing. The Phatbar features a fat 1¼-inch clamping area that tapers down to 1-inch to accommodate stock Harley controls without modification. The bars are throttle-by-wire ready, and both the bars and risers feature slots for internal wire routing.

REAR RADIAL-MOUNT CALIPER BRACKET PM’s radial-mount rear caliper bracket replaces the bulky and ugly stock rear caliper mount on 2008-2021 Touring models. It is designed to allow the installation of a PM Radial Mount Caliper (sold separately) or most calipers with 108mm bolt spacing Radial-mount rear for increased brake caliper bracket performance. The kit is meticulously machined from billet aluminum and comes with chrome mounting hardware.

AXLE ADJUSTER KIT

Cam-style Axle Adjuster Kit

Rear-wheel and drivetrain alignment is crucial to bike handling, as well as belt, chain, and tire wear. And yet Harley’s stock cam-style adjusters on 2009-2021 Harley Touring Models aren’t very accurate, so it’s hard to properly dial in the rear axle. PM’s Axle Adjuster Kit allows fine tuning via laser-etched hatch marks and threaded screw-style adjustment sliders that hold the axle with tighter tolerances than stock components. Each kit includes a machined stainless-steel axle, billet axle adjuster mounts, billet axle adjustment sliders, E-clips, upper and lower shock mounting bolts, and upper shock-mounting spacers. ■

Oil Changes, Elevated

Keeping Engines Clean and Efficient

LIQUI MOLY HD Synth 20W-50 was developed specifically for Harley-Davidson engines and is a blend of select base oils and high-quality additive components, which results in optimum lubrication, engine cleanliness and excellent friction in all operating conditions.

LIQUI MOLY’s Motorbike Engine Flush is available in 250ml one-dose packages for larger V-Twin oil circuits.

Y

es, changing the oil on a bike can be as simple as swapping out the filter and oil. For maximum engine efficiency, cleanliness and performance, though, there’s a little more to it. LIQUI MOLY offers oil as well as additional products to turn a standard oil change into a performance package that will keep engines running at their best. The first step of the LIQUI MOLY performance oil change is to use the brand’s Motorbike Engine Flush. Available in 250ml one-dose packages for larger V-Twin oil circuits, the engine flush is effective at removing deposits. The Motorbike Engine Flush is added before the oil change, then the engine should idle for 10-15 minutes. During that time, the cleaning agents in the flush break down deposits and sludge, and all of it gets drained out of the system along with the old oil. From there, the freshly cleaned engine is ready for new oil. LIQUI MOLY HD Synth 20W-50 was developed specifically for Harley-Davidson engines, and there are plenty of oil options for other bikes. And, while the synthetic HD Synth 20W-50 is ideal for modern Harleys, LIQUI MOLY Motorbike HD Classic SAE 50 is a great choice for older models. HD Synth 20W-50 oil is a blend of select base oils and highquality additive components, which results in optimum

lubrication, outstanding engine cleanliness and excellent friction in all operating conditions. The oil gives Harley motors a break from some of the normal wear and tear, while also reducing operating temperatures. Once the new oil has been added to the engine, it’s time for the performance boosters. A LIQUI MOLY Motorbike MoS2 Shooter adds extra wear protection to the engine thanks to the MoS2 particles, which are a solid lubricant ideal for reducing metal-on-metal contact. The harder an engine is working, the more important the Motorbike MoS2 Shooter becomes. Not only will the engine last longer, but it will also help the engine run at its best. The final step in a LIQUI MOLY performance oil change is to add the LIQUI MOLY Motorbike Speed Additive to the gas tank. While this step can be done at any time, it’s easier to remember when it’s part of a routine oil change. The Motorbike Speed Additive is a high-tech combination of acceleration-enhancing, cleaning, dispersing and material-protecting additives. Motors will start easier and run smoother with this additive, and throttle response will be improved. ■

Sportster culture remains strong, standing as a platform for many types of customs, from bobbers to trackers to choppers and everything in between. Founded with passion for custom motorcycling, NAMZ is no stranger to the Sportster legacy and its customization possibilities, which is why the company is dedicated to making garage and shop work easier with its range of wiring solutions. A common modification for Sportster riders is installing taller risers. However, if riders are simply installing risers while retaining the OEM speedometer and indicator lights, they’ll quickly run out of reach for their connectors. NAMZ offers a line of Speedometer and Instrument Extension Harnesses for 2014-and-up standard Sportsters – plus many other Harley models – that include everything needed to simply extend OEM connections to the length needed. To make sure your customers’ preferences are covered, these are available in both 15-inch and 36-inch options. Taking another step up in simplicity and living true to the name “Plug-n-Play,” NAMZ takes the guess work out of adapting risers with their Plug-N-Play Speedometer and Instrument Extension Harness. This harness is supplied pre-equipped and wired with plug fittings so your customers can easily plug into their existing harness. A variety of machines are covered with this 36-inch harness, including late model Dynas, Road Kings, Softails and Sportsters. For projects taking it beyond just moving OEM components, NAMZ Power Port Y-Adapter easily and reliably provides two 12-volt connections at the same time, a simple solution for adding desired accessories. What if your customers are taking it back a couple more generations with their Sportster build? The 1999 – 2003 generation XLs are no doubt a worthy platform for a restoration or custom build, but trying to re-work OEM wiring can be complicated. Thankfully, NAMZ did the tedious work for your customers with its Sportster Complete Bike Harness. This complete harness features OEM wire color matching with all OEM connectors pre-installed and is readily equipped for common fuses and a starter relay, plus a 30amp circuit breaker for the charging system. This harness has complete plug-and-play functionality to mimic the OE Harley-Davidson harness. ■

A New Way to Swap Clutch Cables

W

ith any replacement cable installation, time is valuable. Magnum Shielding has brought to market a fast and efficient way to switch out your customer’s clutch cables. Thanks to Magnum, your service techs and DIY customers can avoid removing the tranny side cover, the dreaded drainage of transmission fluid, and even the possibility of removing the exhaust system. Whether it’s for a style upgrade or to choose from a wide selection of lengths, Magnum Shielding’s (p/n 0652-2477) Quick-Connect upper replacement clutch cables are in high demand because they make it so easy. The question that often comes up is, why hasn’t Magnum offered this sooner? According to the company, there are a series of patents associated with the OE design that have slowed the introduction of late model cables for Harley-Davidson Softail, Touring and Trike model bikes. Now, Magnum has uniquely designed a more refined and robust Quick-Connect mechanism that is fully compatible with the OE part. You may be curious as to what some of the hurdles were. The OE component is first protected by

a floating sled-shaped die-cast fitting that captures two cable ends, coupling the upper and lower cables together. Magnum’s own patent-pending design uses a compatible, machined fitting, but the difference is that it is directly crimped onto the end of the upper cable. The second OE protection is an “independent” patent claim describing the OE sled’s alignment fins (located at end of upper cable) that interface with mating grooves inside the large removable yellow adjuster housing. With Magnum’s fitting being directly crimped on, there is no longer a need to orient the slot for the lower slug inside the yellow spring-loaded adjuster. Lastly, to address the V-Twin community’s concerns for the fragile nature of the OE plastic components, Magnum designed a robust threaded metal adjuster that ensures a more reliable experience for the user. When it comes to quality and fitment, Magnum always strives to be the leader. ■

and-crafting performance and embracing true motorcycling culture out of California, The Speed Merchant began sharing its passion with the community over a decade ago, specializing in performance and customization parts for Harley-Davidson Sportster and Big Twin platforms. As a custom bike builder by trade and creative engineer by passion, the man behind The Speed Merchant, Brandon Holstein, is aptly familiar with Harley’s iconic Sportster platform. The Speed Merchant way is not only to pay homage to Sportster culture in styling, but to fine tune them to perform on the track. This is why The Speed Merchant was honored by the opportunity to be one of few select builders to express their creative vision with Harley’s brand-new, Sporty-based Nightster.

ust because a motorcycle part is functional, doesn’t mean it can’t look good, too. Stock mirrors and foot pegs tend to be more about function than form, making them among the parts riders replace first. Not only can aftermarket mirrors and pegs make a huge difference in the overall look of a V-Twin, but they are also easy and affordable to replace.

A Drag Specialties and Arlen Ness teamed up for the ever-popular Stealth I mirrors, as well as their offshoots, the Stealth II and Stealth with dualintensity LEDs.

Drag Specialties and Arlen Ness offer mirror and peg options in a range of sizes, styles and even colors to give riders plenty of choices. Drag Specialties and Arlen Ness teamed up for the everpopular Stealth I mirrors, as well as their offshoots, the Stealth II and Stealth with dual-intensity LEDs. The Stealth I and II mirrors are available with the usual clear glass mirrors or a “Blue Sapphire” tint, which helps reduce glare, while looking great. The Stealth I mirror sits on a 4¾-inch stem, making it great for pullback and ape hanger bars. The Stealth II has a longer reach with its 6-inch stem, and it’s a popular choice for drag and custom handlebars.

The Drag/Ness Tearchop mirror is available in a range of colors.

The Stealth mirrors with dual-intensity LEDs take things up a notch with four rows of LEDs built into the front of each chromed mirror. Riders who want a classic-but-modern mirror will appreciate the Drag Specialties-Arlen Ness Round Series mirrors. The design on the backside of the mirror keeps the classic round style fresh and stylish. Arlen Ness recently introduced colored mirrors, which come in anodized options like orange, gold, red and blue. Shapes include a standard oval as well as Tearchop, which is a chopped version of the classic teardrop.

For riders who want a pop of color on their pegs, too, Arlen Ness offers the MX foot pegs.

Customers who want to make a style statement in miniature form can opt for the Arlen Ness micro mirrors. These small die-cast designs offer a true custom look, ranging from traditional styles like teardrop and oval to bold designs such as flames. For riders who want a pop of color on their pegs, too, Arlen Ness offers the MX foot pegs as well as knurled foot and shifter pegs in different colors. With the knurled pegs, the color is only on the end cap for a more subtle look, while the MX pegs provide a bigger punch of color. WIRING HARNESSES

Easy Electrics

All-Inclusive Wiring Harnesses

GMA’s wiring harness kits for the company’s hand control systems are available with or without switch housings. The kits are designed for easy, hassle-free installation.

These proprietary wiring kits are especially easy to adapt to GMA’s exclusive line of custom hand controls for clutch levers (cable and hydraulic systems) and front brake levers with integrated master cylinder assemblies for single- or dual-disc front brakes, depending on applications. All GMA hand control systems fit 1-inch handlebars (except dimpled bars), and can be used as custom applications for stock Harley-Davidsons, or for one-off custom builds. Made of high-quality aluminum, GMA hand controls are CNC machined for precise fit and finish, and speaking of finish, they come in black, chrome or polished to suit any custom bike styling theme. All GMA custom controls include mounting clamps and levers with hardware. GMA hand controls can be ordered individually or with Switch Kits that can route wiring internally or externally, depending on the builder’s preference. Each Switch Kit includes three momentary switches with buttons, switch housing and colorcoded wiring harness. The Switch Kit’s OEM color-coded wires are 48-inches long, and the compact 2-inch module to control button operation can be mounted just about anywhere on the motorcycle. These kits were designed for the specific purpose of making it easier for a builder or your customer to complete the project, be it a stock-bike conversion or a full-on custom.

how of hands: Who among America’s many talented custom motorcycle builders – pro and do-it-yourselfers alike – enjoys wiring the electrics for a scratch-built bike? No surprise, not many builders do, although threading wire looms that can stretch the length of the bike is part of the custom-build process, one that tests a builder’s electrical expertise, not to mention patience. That job can now be made much easier thanks to GMA’s all-inclusive wiring kits that allow builders to eliminate the existing OEM switches from a bike’s handlebars, or to create an custom wiring circuit that’s unique to the custom motorcycle itself. Either application allows for a neat and tidy system, regardless of what bike it’s applied to.

Replacement Options to Keep Running

L

et’s be honest: Cables aren’t exactly an exciting subject. They’re not the parts on a V-Twin that turn heads or prompt debates over who are the best designers and builders. No one looks at a bike and says, “Look how sexy those cables are!” (Well, maybe somebody out there does.) Without cables, though, a bike isn’t going to get anywhere. When it comes time to replacement parts like clutch, throttle and idle cables, Drag Specialties has them for virtually every application. And since the cables meet or exceed all OEM specifications, customers can save some money without giving up fitment, quality or durability.

The braided cables are all topped with a clear coating that prevents any abrasion. Not to worry, though – the coating is specially formulated so it won’t yellow over time. The braided cables will continue looking as good as they do when new.

The clutch, throttle and idle cables are available in undersize, standard and oversize lengths for most models, so everything from stock bikes to customized V-Twins can get the right fitment. Easy Engagement Clutching with Less Force Müller Motorcycle’s Power Clutch significantly reduces the force needed to pull the clutch lever on HarleyDavidson Evo, Twin Cam and M8 models.

A

long day of riding, especially if there is a lot of traffic, can result in tired, aching fingers from constantly pulling in the clutch lever. Largedisplacement engines require a strong clutch, which can often result in the clutch lever requiring a lot of power to engage. By simply installing a Power Clutch by Müller Motorcycle, though, riders can make tired fingers a thing of the past.

A Power Clutch significantly reduces the power needed to pull the clutch lever on Harley-Davidson Evo, Twin Cam and M8 models. Müller Motorcycle says the Power Clutch reduces the effort required to engage the clutch lever by more than 40 percent. In 2018 and newer Harley models, the team at Müller has seen up to a 45-percent reduction. The Power Clutch is both simple to install and virtually invisible once it is in place. It replaces the OEM clutch setup, and it doesn’t require any drilling or spacers. By making one small, simple change, clutching is vastly easier. Müller Motorcycle founder Werner Müller designed the Power Clutch with a revised geometry of the ball pockets, and this patented product achieves two objectives – it makes using the clutch lever easier and it ensures that the clutch separates cleanly for a smooth ride. The Power Clutch is available in four fitments, including one designed for right-side drive transmissions. ■

Race-Bred Brake Pads

S

lowing and stopping a fully packed Touring bike at legal speeds on the highway requires a worthy braking system. Slowing that same motorcycle under racing conditions is even more taxing on a Bagger’s brakes. Nowhere is that more important than the Bagger Racing League, for which DP Brakes is the Official Brake for the 2022 championship series.

DP Brakes’ high-quality brake pads and DPHK Street Clutch Kits

Various racers and teams in the BRL series use DP’s high-performance RDP X-Race Titanium brake pads, which feature a compound developed through Superbike racing, says DP Brakes’ Larry Mills. This is great news to your customers, as those same part numbers are in the FatBook.

Like all DP brake compounds, these brake pads don’t generate brake dust or brake squeal. They also aren’t prone to fading, thanks to a high-tech ceramic heat shield that’s coupled with brake pads made using industry high “HH+” friction-rated compound.

DP’s race-bred pads offer advantages such as a progressive feel, which gives riders immediate braking response when slowing or stopping quickly. Perhaps the biggest advantage from the RDP X-Race pads that the racers enjoy aboard their near-half-ton motorcycles is confidence for late braking and trail braking into corners, maneuvers not associated with street riding, but commonplace on the racetrack.

Many riders are also using DP’s DPHK Street Clutch Kits to enhance shifting performance. These kits contain heattreated steel plates for smooth, progressive clutch action. The included friction plates require no presoaking of oil for installation. A complete set of clutch springs are part of the package. ■

Now, those same popular products are available for early-model 19952005 Twin Cams bikes with push-in style caps. There also applications for the 1993-1998 Evo FL models.

An efficiently vented crankcase is a performance must. It can help an engine run smoother, cooler, cleaner and make more power. Adding a Feuling Vented Dipstick goes a long way towards accomplishing all of that. The Vented Dipsticks are easily installed, look good and are available with a Polished or a fade-resistant Black finish.

Vented Dipstick options aren’t limited to just the finish, either. Feuling has given riders the option of using a small and unobtrusive in-cap vent/filter for a clean and simple look, a small vent system that incorporates an oil separator, perforated disc, replaceable filter element and umbrella flapper valve. Or, for even better breathing, there’s the option to use a small, remotely mounted filter connected to the top of the Vented Dipstick with a quickdisconnect coupler and a hose. motorcycle boasting a power-to-weight ratio of four pounds per one horsepower – we’re talking about Harley-Davidson’s new Sportster S – can pose as a handful of unbridled excitement for its rider when the throttle grip gets twisted to full stop. And if you factor 94 ft-lbs of torque into the ride, the term “raging bull” rears its angry head, too. No doubt, the Sportster S has created interest among performance-minded Harley fans. Simply, its performance quotient means that when the rider calls on its Revolution Max 1250 engine, he or she had better have a firm grasp on the handgrips. Smarter and More Powerful New Lithium Battery Charger

The new OptiMate Lithium LFP 4s5A battery charger features a host of new functions designed for peak lithium battery maintenance.

S

ince its introduction in 2012, the OptiMate Lithium LFP 4s5A (model TM291) has been the company’s most popular powersport charger for 12.8V / 13.2V Lithium (LiFePO4 / LFP / LiFe) batteries. Now it is being replaced with an even smarter and powerful version, the OptiMate Lithium LFP 4s6A. The new model retains the advanced and same unique battery saving and charging features, including automatically saving a battery from as low as 0.5 Volts, and continuous testing of battery health as it safely recovers the dead-flat battery. It also has the same smart Ampmatic charge control that regulates charge rate to match the size and condition of the battery – smaller batteries get less, bigger batteries get more!

The revamped charger (p/n 3807-0597) adds those great features with new functions, including the following pushbutton-activated modes:

» » »

1. BMS reset for advanced batteries with built-in deep discharge protection 2. Zero volt save for a battery that was run flat in a vehicle 3. TUNE mode

The third feature provides stable power (13.6V) to the battery when the ignition system is on, but the engine is not running. This allows uninterrupted adjustment of a motorcycle model’s user settings (ride modes, suspension, engine power, Bluetooth pairing), or electrical troubleshooting, engine diagnostics and ECU software updating. Lithium batteries deliver better starting performance, but still have less Amp-hour capacity than the equivalent lead-acid battery. They will run down faster in the vehicle if not receiving charge from the vehicle’s system. The new OptiMate Lithium 4s 6 Amp guarantees that battery will remain strong and healthy in any situation – during service, long-term storage or home use. ■

Performance Pistons for Twin Cams

A

popular conversion to boost both displacement and compression for 96-inch and 103-inch Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engines is easy using aftermarket 4.00 inch bore slip-in cylinders. The next step is deciding what pistons to use. KB Pistons’ Super Duty Piston Kit is one choice to tailor-fit those Twin Cam cylinders for increased displacement and a higher compression ratio (11:1). Specifically, the KB 4-inch-bore piston has a 4.2cc dome that, when used with the factory-spec 85cc head results in 11:1 compression ratio. Maintaining zero deck clearance and using an 0.040” head gasket assures this for both 96-inch and 103-inch conversions to 110 cubic inches. In addition, the slip-in cylinders require base gaskets, which allows further compression ratio adjustment, depending on the gasket’s thickness. Note, too, that the Super Duty pistons’ slightly longer skirts sometimes interfere with portions of the engine case at bottom dead center. Brake Rotors for Performance and Style Galfer’s Wave rotor provides the Speed Merchant’s customized Harley-Davidson Nightster with a great upgrade in braking performance and style.

W

hen Speed Merchant’s Brian Holstein set out to customize a Harley-Davidson Nightster, he decided to give the new model the look of an old-school track bike. The Nightster’s styling hearkens to the classic Sportster look, making it the perfect platform for a retro racer. When it came to choosing the right brake rotors for the Speed Merchant Nightster, going with Galfer was a natural choice since the company’s floating Wave rotors were bred in racing. Holstein didn’t have to go far to find them, either: Galfer’s Wave brake rotors for V-Twin applications are manufactured in the USA, at Galfer USA’s base in Carson City, Nevada.

Galfer Wave rotors look great, especially on a custom bike, but they weren’t designed just for looks. The design also offers a big performance advantage over stock brake rotors. The Wave design is much lighter than stock, and it allows for lower operating temperatures even in extreme braking conditions, because air is able to pass over every point of the brake pad surface. Bulk-Buy Lubricants

A

standard 1-liter bottle of lubricant might work great for a rider in their own garage, but it’s just not effective for a shop. Service departments go through gallons of oil and lube as they freshen up one V-Twin after another, which means a bulk format makes a whole lot more sense. By choosing Bel-Ray’s high-volume packaging, you can save space, waste and cost. Bel-Ray uses a convenient, cost-effective bag-in-box design for its 6-gallon containers of premium synthetic 10W-50, semi-synthetic 20W-50, transmission oil and chaincase lubricant. With the bag-in-box approach, you can pour the right quantity of oil quickly and easily with the spigot on the front of the package. With no bottles to drain and less waste filling up the trash, your shop runs more efficiently, which helps increase profits. The bulk format might be new, but inside the bags are the same Bel-Ray lubes you and your customers know and trust. That includes V-Twin synthetic oil in 10W-50, which is formulated specially for air-cooled V-Twin engines and

Bel-Ray offers a range of its lubricants in convenient, space-saving and cost-effective 6-gallon bag-in-a-box quantities.

offers superior film strength and incredible viscosity protection. V-Twin semi-synthetic 20W-50 also provides outstanding performance and protection, but at a more attractive price. Big Twin transmission oil keeps gears spinning smoothly for reduced noise and smoother shifting, while Bel-Ray’s Primary Chaincase Lubricant is specifically formulated for wet clutches and primary chains on Harleys. You already know how well Bel-Ray’s V-Twin lubes perform, and now you can get them in larger quantities that improve shop efficiency and profit. ■

Pack Smart

Compact Storage Solutions Nelson-Rigg’s Route 1 Magnetic Cell Phone Holder has inner sleeves storage, and a clear top pocket that’s handy when using a phone for navigation.

A

big part of packing for a trip, whether it’s for a day trip or a cross-country journey, is efficiency. Making the most of the storage space available and choosing the right luggage pieces are vital steps.

Sometimes, the right choice means going smaller. When a rider simply wants to keep the essentials handy, the Nelson-Rigg Route 1 Magnetic Cell Phone Holder is the perfect choice. And when it comes to bike covers, the compact Defender Extreme Route 1 Half Cover is a great way to protect a bike without hauling around a lot of bulk.

Both pieces are constructed from Nelson-Rigg’s innovative UltraMax fabric for extreme UV protection and come with the company’s Lifetime Warranty, which includes no fading. The Route 1 Magnetic Cell Phone Holder has a lot of thoughtful touches, like inner sleeves for credit cards and a driver’s license. The clear top pocket is touchscreenfriendly and fits even the larger cell phones—an especially valuable perk when using a phone for navigation. The holder’s angle can be adjusted to reduce glare, and it mounts to a metal tank via strong magnets for easy positioning. The Defender Extreme Route 1 Half Cover for Touring, Adventure, and all big bikes is 100 percent waterproof with electronically heat-sealed seams. An elastic hem and four elastic loops hold the cover securely in place. The cover folds into the built-in carry bag, which has a draw cord, for compact storage. ■

Seat Options for Sportsters

W

hen it comes to seats that fit Harley-Davidson Sportsters, LePera Motorcycle Seats has something for every kind of riding situation. A seat like the Bare Bones is ideal for solo riders who want a straightforward, minimal seat, while something like the Tail Whip provides day-riding comfort for the passenger as well as a platform for showing off. The Bare Bones is a low, aggressive solo seat that looks great on all kinds of V-Twin models thanks to its smooth lines and minimalist design. The kick-up in the rear provides a modest amount of back support as well as a “Bare to the Bone” look. The seat can be paired with a matching pillion pad so a passenger can ride along, too. The TailWhip is the opposite of the Bare Bones in terms of styling and attitude. The deep driver seating area is great for a long day of riding, but it is also ideal for giving an impromptu performance of just what a V-Twin can do. The TailWhip can also accommodate a passenger, with a good amount of comfort for day riding.

The LePera Bare Bones is ideal for solo riders who want a straightforward, minimal seat that features smooth lines and plenty of comfort.

Of course, comfort is something a rider can expect from any LePera seat. Each seat begins with a traditionally crafted, carpeted, powder-coated steel base plate. On top of the base plate is LePera’s specially formulated high-density Marathon foam, which gives each seat its distinctive shape while providing maximum comfort. Each LePera seat is sewn by hand for a truly personal touch. ■

Front and Rear Replacement Fenders

R

eplacing a fender doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. Drag Specialties has a range of front and rear steel fenders to fit pretty much every customer’s needs. That means there is no reason for riders to pay high OEM prices for a replacement, but it also means riders with older bikes don’t have to search high and low for a new fender.

FENDERS

Steel Selection

Many of the available fenders from Drag match the OE fender and mount using the OEM hardware, making the swap absolutely effortless. Of course, some riders want more of a custom touch, so there are a lot of other choices available, too. Some fenders come with the mounting holes pre-drilled for a direct swap from stock, while others don’t have any pre-drilling, which gives the customer a little more flexibility when it comes to where the fender goes. Finishes include stock style or smooth, and some fenders are available with or without trim holes to help customers get the exact style they need. Front fender mounting brackets and rear fender struts – in a smooth finish or a direct OEM replacement style – are also available for some applications to get the new fenders mounted. Each Drag Specialties fender is made from stamped raw steel, ensuring a smooth finish and a quality product that is ready to be prepped for paint.

Each Drag Specialties fender is made from stamped raw steel, ensuring a smooth finish and a quality product that’s ready to be prepped for paint.

Drag has a huge variety of front and rear fender styles available, with fitments in both the FatBook and OldBook. While there are a lot of OEM replacement options, there are also many choices geared toward riders who want to change up the look of their bike. Styles like the rear fenders for Dresser and Street Bob models come with pre-cut holes to accept OEM components such as the brake and taillight setup and license plate holder. Custom-style rear fenders for Fat Bobs have two configurations; one for a left-hand chain, and one for a right-hand chain. Unlike Drag’s OEM-replacement style for Fat Bobs, this version has a smooth end with no license plate mount, making it great for custom applications. Riders who are really going for custom style should check out Drag’s custom rear fender. This option is as DIY as it gets when it comes to fenders. No holes are pre-drilled, and the straightforward styling means the fender can fit with a variety of bikes and setups for a true customized look. ■
