As I walk down Oistens Main Road, a warm ocean breeze carries a slight whiff of BBQ smoke. Now a little further, the unique sound of Caribbean music grows louder and stage lights can be seen flashing a multitude of colors over a very excited crowd. Definitely and decidedly excited and for good reason... this is A Night Out in Oistins, the opening event for the Barbados Food and Rum Festival.

Celebrating it’s 10 year, the Barbados Food and Rum Festival has become a great venue to showcase the culinary talent in Barbados, attracted world classes chefs like Tom Aikens, Britain’s youngest chef to receive two Michelin Stars and Canada’s Craig Harding. There is no doubt that the Barbados Food and Rum Festival is a premier Caribbean culinary event.

A Night Out in Oistins Event happens in an open public space next to the Oistins fish market. Tourists and locals mingle effortlessly, with tourists making up at least half of those in attendance. The other half are locals, and they’re here because they hknow there is no where better to experience a Bajan fish BBQ.

The Gourmet Safari Dine Around

Tonight, festival goers can dine at one of many fine restaurants around the island; I chose Hugo’s. Located on Speightstown's beach front, Hugo’s is a perfect mix of open air and enclosed fine dining. Head chef Avion Caine’s menu was what he calls “Childhood Memories”, where he takes the ingredients he remembers from his childhood and elevates them to a level you might not think possible.

I ordered the Bajan Marinated Pork Chop with Black Eyed Pea Puree, Okra, Crackling and Sorrel Ketchup as my entrée and it was outstanding.

Interesting side note about Hugo’s – I noticed many photographs that were of the famed Ivy Restaurant in London, England. As it turns out Andy Stewart, owner of Hugo’s was once a partner in the Ivy and after a recent renovation he brought some memorabilia back to Barbados.

Epicure - An Evening of Elegance

An Evening of Elegance is an understatement. Tonight’s venue is at the Barbados Prime Minister’s residence. Designed and built in the early 1920’s this gracious mansion combines Edwardian, Italian, and Caribbean architectural features into a distinctive and individualistic whole.

On this night, the Chefs really get to strut their stuff. Over 500 guests enjoyed the tastes of the Caribbean from a dozen or so food stations that celebrated one common theme – Barbados RUM! Each dish was created using local rum in some way. My favorite bite of the night was Canadian Chef Craig Harding’s rum infused Pork belly – melt in your mouth delicious!

The rum poured freely that evening and the infectious Caribbean sounds made it impossible to stay off the dance

All in all, the Barbados Food and Rum festival was a great event and I cannot wait to go back again soon. I It was lively, authentic and jam packed with outstanding food and exceptional rum. Bravo Barbados!

Between festival events, take to the waters that Barbados is famous for. I took a morning cruise with the sailing team at Cool Runnings Catamaran Cruises. Nothing beats spending time on the blue water and their crew was well equipped to make this morning cruise relaxing and memorable.

PLAN TO GO October 29 to November 1, 2020

Ocean Two Resort & Residences was my home base for the week. Guest rooms are huge (perfect for long stays) and had a spectacular oceanview. I lovd how it sat right on the beach, allowing me to take a quick dip whenever I felt like it.

Barbados is often referred to as the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean. The Barbados Food and Rum Festival has given birth to a series of events, or better yet – culinary and beverage experiences – designed to tantalize the taste buds, while offering a variety of other colorful and flavorful experiences to stimulate the other senses as well.

The 2020 event should prove extra special as “Gatherin 2020” will be in full swing. This a year long celebration looks to have Barbadians across the world return home for 2020. It is an invitation open to Barbadians by birth, by descent, by marriage or by choice. But is it more than just a homecoming. It will focus on ‘Barbadian excellence and a re-commitment to this country’s successful future and core values that have defined them as a people. visitbarbados.org

FORT MYERS& SANIBEL ISLAND

Fort Myers and Sanibel Island are located on the southwest Gulf Coast of Florida. This area is known for its nature preserves, white sandy beaches, shelling, bird watching, beautiful palm trees and some of the best fishing. The charming downtown river district in Fort Myers is paved with 500,000 restored bricks that were once covered in asphalt. It is a charming city with swaying palm trees, street side café styled bistros, fine dining, restored architecture, iron sculptures that dot the landscape, a busy harbor and historic homes. While you are here, take a guided tour and learn about the city’s history and heritage. A must visit are the Edison Ford estates which have 20 acres of botanical gardens, restored homes with original furnishings, an inventions museum, Ford vehicles, (including a camperized pickup), and a lab for rubber research that ran from 1928-1936. Thomas Edison purchased thirteen acres along the Caloosahatchee River for his winter estate in 1855. He imported 200 palm trees and planted them along the once dirt road leading from his property to downtown. This beautiful gift gave the city the nickname “The City of Palms”. Some of those trees are now 75 feet tall. His close friend Henry Ford purchased the adjoining property. Both estates now belong to the city of Fort Myers and are historic landmarks. One 90-year-old Banyan tree that was planted by Edison is said to encompass one acre. It was given to him by Harvey Firestone, as they, along with Henry Ford experimented with different trees for rubber sources.

My stay started at Hotel Indigo; a boutique hotel located in the River District in downtown Fort Myers. The large room featured wall-to-wall windows where I could enjoy the amazing view. To my delight there was a popcorn machine in the lobby and wonderful comfy chairs to relax in after my evening stroll around the city.

Next was Sanibel Island Inn, a luxurious resort with large contemporary suites, private cottages, a swimming pool and white sandy beaches as far as you can see - truly a shell hunter’s dream. I loved to get up early and stroll along the beach and watch the feeding antics of the many varied birds along the shore, including White Ibis,

Gulls, Snowy Egret, Sandpipers and Pelicans. I thoroughly enjoyed all my meals from breakfast at a local favorite, Bennett’s Fresh Roast and Donut Shop (delicious bacon maple donuts), Seed and Bean for fresh roasted coffee, hemp protein shakes and cannabis infused beer (but not for breakfast) but not for breakfast1 Lunch at Bubble Room, a kitschy and colorful place where we had the most amazing homemade fried potato chips loaded with cheese and bacon…seriously delicious; which was followed by a huge slice of decadent orange cake. Pinchers on the Marina is where I tasted my first Keylime Pie; and dinner at Doc Fords which was in full swing from the music festival.

Saving Wildlife

We stopped by CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife). It is a publicly funded non-profit organization that cares for injured native wildlife. They have full time veterinarians and is a teaching hospital with internships for veterinary graduates. They also rely on many volunteers. The morning we arrived they had already taken 14 calls for injured wildlife, including a bird with an injured wing that came in during our visit and two separate calls for baby raccoons that had been abandoned.

In 2019, they took care of nearly 4000 patients. While most of the wildlife is kept out of view to minimize trauma, there are a few resident birds that are not able to return to the wild, including an owl that came in missing a wing which is now a permanent resident. We also peeked in one room that contained three recuperating turtles with damaged, but repaired shells, happily munching on lettuce leaves.

It was fun walking through Butterfly Estates as the butterflies flitted around us. It’s a non-profit organization and educational facility that hand raise native species of butterflies. They raise them from chrysalis and eventually release them, so they don’t worry if they escape through a door when someone enters. They are involved in research projects that help the native butterfly species flourish.

While in Fort Myers make sure you stop at Norman Love Confections. We sampled and then sampled some more of their delicious specialty chocolates. It has been named the best chocolate company in the US 6 times, and I would agree. They not only offer a wide variety of interesting flavor combinations of chocolates, but also desserts and pastries. I especially loved the mango and the chocolate gelato.

J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife

Preserve is located on Sanibel Island on an estuary. It was created to preserve the wildlife habitat of Sanibel Island and contains thousands of plant species and animals. This is a refuge that you drive through, pulling over when you please, to search out the over 245 species of birds and wildlife. In fact, it is the number one birding spot in America. There is a high platform overlooking a pond, built for that purpose.

Six Mile Cypress Slough (sloo)

Preserve in Fort Myers is 3,500 acre wetland ecosystem. It is a not-forprofit advocacy that is committed to preserving, protecting and educating the public. There are boardwalks to enjoy the plants and wildlife, and keeps visitors from trampling plants or disturbing ecosystems. I was fascinated with the Cypress trees with knees...these are the woody projections that grow vertically above the tree roots and poke above the water, like knobbly knees. We were told the snakes should be under and not on the boardwalk, but I kept a sharp lookout for any that may have decided to sun on the walkway.

Music to My Ears

The Island Hopper Songwriters fest takes place on Captiva Island, which is attached to Sanibel by the Blind Pass bridge. The festival was in full swing when we arrived. There were amazing entertaining songwriters, such as Even Stevens that wrote “I Love a Rainy Night” sung by Eddie Rabbitt, “Love Will Turn You Around” performed by Kenny Rogers, as well as songs for Dolly Parton, Blake Shelton, Martina McBride, and has the distinction of being BMI “Songwriter of the Century”. There was a very entertaining performance by James Slater who wrote

“Mexicana” for Tim McGraw, which he performed with a guitarist and a fake piano. The Voice, winner of season 8, Sawyer Fredericks showed us why he won the contest.

My time in Fort Myers and Sanibel Island was amazing. Lovely weather, long walks on white sandy beaches, shells collected, delicious food, great lodging, birds galore and ended with a wonderful boat ride around the Islands to really appreciate the beauty of the area. We even spotted some dolphins.

Get Off The Beaten Track in Sri Lanka

It’s easy to lose your heart to the palm tree-lined beaches of Sri Lanka, but venture off the sandy beaten track and you’ll discover a hidden world of hip design hotels hidden in the rainforest and luxury houseboats gliding over tranquil lakes. Zoey Goto visited the island to explore the road less traveled.

TRAVEL OFTEN LIVE WELL 45

Where to Stay

Stay overnight in the beating heart of the rainforest, at the Palmstone retreat in Kitulgala, which is a 3-hour drive from Colombo airport. This beautiful boutique hotel has just six chalets, and the ambiance of staying in someone’s stylish home, rather than a traditional hotel. All the apartments use floor to ceiling windows to soak up the views of the surrounding rainforest, complete with monkeys playing overhead, and the babbling stream that runs through the retreat.

Palmstone is also ideally located for water sports enthusiasts, with the Kelani River just a short drive away. Used as the filming location for the 1957 movie epic The Bridge On The River Kwai, this waterway now boasts many white water rafting centers. There are also tea plantations, historic caves, secret waterfalls and jungle treks to be explored in the local area.

Alternatively, the Flow houseboats on Bolgoda Lake are just 40 minutes from the commercial capital of Colombo, and offer respite from the bustle of the city. Docked in a private marina, Flow has two houseboats, one with two bedrooms and one with three. At first glance they are reminiscent of the houseboats of Kerala in Southern India, but step on-board and you’ll find them to be far more spacious and luxurious, with four-poster beds, freestanding baths, and antique furnishings. The marina where the boats are docked is part of a private members club, where water sports such as jet ski and speedboat adventures can be arranged.

There’s plenty to keep you occupied whilst staying at Flow, including fishing expeditions, a nature-watching cruise, moonlight alfresco film screenings in the marina, spa treatments, or for a truly unique dining experience, a lavish castaway picnic on a local private island.

Why Now?

In recent years Sri Lanka had become a must-visit try destination, seen as an undiscovered tropical paradise. In early 2019, Lonely Planet voted Sri Lanka the best country in the world to visit, due to its recent crop of hotel openings, emerging surf scene, rich mix of cultures, abundance of wildlife and friendliness towards visitors. This is a country that is really having its moment in the spotlight.

There are currently good value deals available and for those looking to avoid the mass-market tourism trail, Sri Lanka’s strength lies is in the intimate, bespoke experiences it offers.

TRAVEL OFTEN LIVE WELL 47

What To See

Sri Lanka’s diverse religious make up is reflected in the many vibrant Hindu temples, mosques, Catholic churches and Buddhist places of worship, dotted throughout the island. As Colombo’s oldest Buddhist temple, Gangaramaya is worth visiting, but equally the smaller temples and churches that line the side streets of Bolgoda Lake near Flow have a unique charm and offer more intimacy.

Adam’s Peak is a two-hour drive from Palmstone retreat, and attracts thousands of visitors each day. The sacred mountain is situated in the center of the island and has huge religious significance across multi faiths. The temples and botanical gardens of Kandy, Sri Lanka’s second largest city, are also within driving distance of Palmstone, as are the tea plantations and colonial houses of Nuwara Eliya, an area of hill country known locally as Little England due to the lasting influence of the British colonial period.

If you want to get up close to Sri Lanka’s wildlife, it’s worth adding a couple of additional days into your trip for a safari trip. Wilpattu National Park is known for its lakes and leopards, Minneriya National Park has an abundance of elephants, whilst Yala National Park is the place to spot crocodiles, leopards and exotic birds.

48 DRIFTTRAVEL.COM

When to Visit

Due to its close proximity to the Equator, Sri Lanka has an average year-round temperature of 80°F. However, there are two monsoon seasons on the island to keep in mind when planning a visit. The best time to visit the west and south coasts and hill country (where Palmstone and Flow are located) is from December to March, whilst the best weather on the east coast is from April/May to September.

One Winter’s Day in Yokohama

During winter, the garden is gently dusted with snow

52 DRIFTTRAVEL.COM

If time and budget don’t allow for a longer vacation, but you’re in need of some time away from Tokyo (she can be overwhelming, right?), we have just the solution. Yokohama boasts wide open spaces, ocean views, craft beer and jazz bars. While many Tokyoites regularly escape into the city’s tranquil arms during the warmer seasons, its beauty can be a little neglected when the temperature drops. But we say, pick a day with blue skies, put a coat on and head for the port.

Yokohama has many locations that were designed to be walkable. First up, we recommend Sankeien, a traditional landscaped garden that once was the home of an important feudal lord and opened to the public in 1906. The site boasts 17 historic buildings as well as plenty of flora and fauna (when we visited, we were lucky to spot a couple of Japanese cranes). A full round through the many trails will take you well over 30 minutes if you don’t stop by the shrine or pagoda along the way. While the park is an obvious attraction during spring, we advise stopping by during winter when the garden and its foliage are gently dusted with snow, giving the park a romantic winter wonderland feel.

TRAVEL OFTEN LIVE WELL 53

A walk through Yamashita Park will also lead you to the city’s pride and joy: Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse. Serving as an ode to the city’s fascinating history, the former brick warehouse is a historical building that’s renovated as a trendy space for shops and restaurants. Among these is jazz bar Motion Blue, which is a sister location to the popular Blue Note in Tokyo’s Shibuya. If you’re looking for a vibey atmosphere and live tunes, good food and delicious original cocktails, this is the place to go. The bar books worldwide-renown artists so be sure to check their schedule before you visit.

If you’re hesitant to stray too far from the warmth of the shopping malls, pick up a cup of hot cocoa and opt for a stroll through Yamashita Park. It’s a five-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station and runs right alongside the sea. On one side, admire a series of buildings that show off some of the city’s oldest architecture and now house an assortment of restaurants and cafés. What to see in Los Angeles

56 DRIFTTRAVEL.COM

IT’S A CITY WHERE BIG DREAMS FLOAT THROUGH THE STREETS, UP TO THE MOUNTAINS AND DOWN TO THE BEACHES.

Breathing in the salty air, listening to the crashing waves, feeling the warm sand beneath my toes; there’s a peace that flows through my body as the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk seems to blur behind me. As much as Los Angeles is always busy, there’s a peacefulness to it; everyone doing their thing, living with love, diverse with their talents and paying no mind to anyone’s differences.

It’s a city where big dreams float through the streets, up to the mountains and down to the beaches. Talent is everywhere: dancing along

the boardwalk, painted along the arts district, behind and in-front of the camera, below and above the water. Each neighborhood in Los Angeles carries its own unique atmosphere. Hollywood is filled with glitz and glamour, Venice boasts a bohemian vibe, the Arts District with its trendy, hipster feel, and Universal City with an entertainment and experience-driven environment.

Whether looking to indulge in the food scene, experience the entertainment world, or get outdoors and into nature, there something for everyone here.

VENICE BEACH

Venice is my paradise in the City of Angels; the perfect mix of beach and town. The Boardwalk stretches for miles extending from Santa Monica to Malibu and beyond. Inhabited by all sorts of individuals, the eclectic vibe of Venice Beach is quintessential and fitting, providing the perfect amount of quirky charm. Whether lounging on the sand, watching the skaters at the skate park, biking along the path, shopping in the beachy stores, or grabbing an ice-cold beverage, it’s all kinds of perfect.

Nestled along the Boardwalk is The Waterfront—and by far one of my favorite spots in Los Angeles. Wanting to bring a little Australian flare, Dave—one of the owners—modeled the new design after his favorite local hangout, Wharf Bar, in Manly, Sydney. As such, the beautiful bohemian beach eatery serves as the go-to spots for locals and tourists alike. Complete with a lounge area, takeout window, all-day café, beer garden and dining area, this soulful beach destination provides an authentically Californian experience with food options for all, whether vegetarian, vegan or carnivore. Over a beer, some fresh veggies and one of the best hummuses I’ve ever tasted, it was easy to spend a few hours laughing with a friend and enjoying the beautiful weather on the back patio.

Renting a bike is essential in Venice. More than just taking you from point A to point B, renting a bike allows you to see the city in a way that many locals do. Cycling down the coastline and taking in the beautiful landscape is an experience itself and provides the perfect transportation for a day adventure. Perry’s Café and Beach Rentals is my go-to spot for rentals with plenty of different bike options available.

Chulita on Rose Avenue is a must-try Alta California-style Mexican restaurant. They also serve up some tasty mezcal and tequila cocktails to pair perfectly with the cuisine. The bright colors, the wooden aesthetic and the big windows make for a welcoming dining spot on a warm sunny day.

HOLLYWOOD

Overlooking the beautiful city tucked under a cozy blanket while watching A Star Is Born was a fantastic experience. It is no surprise that rooftop cinemas are growing in popularity as they are the perfect date night escape. Rooftop Cinema Club offers screenings of iconic movies, drink and snack options galore and a cute venue with beautiful views of the city.

After a day spent on the Boulevard, curling up into the cozy bed of Dream Hollywood truly is a dream. The hotel perfectly epitomizes Hollywood glam and is extravagance at its finest. Within a one-block radius, Dream Hollywood provides high-end dining options, a rooftop restaurant and pool patio that transforms into a club, a late-night pizzeria and bar, a fully-equipped gym designed by celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson and more. To top it all off, the hotel is pet-friendly and their bathrobes, well, I could spend my entire day lounging in their luxuriously soft embrace.

The Comedy Store is a must for anyone who loves to laugh. Located on Sunset Strip and open 365 days a year, The Comedy Store is known for celebrity drop-ins and hilarious comedic lineups. Grab a couple of drinks, have a few snacks and enjoy the night over endless laughs.

DTLA / THE ARTS DISTRICT

The food options are endless; whether craving Asian, Italian, or some sort of fusion cuisine, you can find it here. Most notably, you can probably find it in Grand Central Market. GCM is an eatery that is home to a variety of vendors from all over the world. From Sari Sari, a Filipino rice bowl stall, to Tacos Tumbras a Tomas, a Mexican taqueria, to Ramen Hood, a vegan Japanese joint, the Market is LA’s culinary centerpiece with over 100 years of experience.

Walking down the street taking in the street art in the Arts District is incredibly moving, thoughtprovoking and wonderful. Teeming with creativity and political commentary, the neighborhood has transformed into an iconic spot with graffiti masterpieces that range from colorful and abstract to dark and contemporary. More than just a spot for incredible art, the food scene in the Arts District has developed into a sought-after spot for unique restaurants.

What started as a small taco cart, grew into a bustling food truck business, and eventually into a brick and mortar restaurant. But Chef Wes Avila’s Guerrila Tacos is more than just a Mexican restaurant, it’s the story of how a man turned $167 into a renowned establishment meant to bring exceptional recipes, locally sourced ingredients and the perfect medium of approachable, unpretentious, finedining gourmet meals to the street. Paying homage to the acclaimed food writer, Jonathan Gold—the man who broke down the walls of food writing and elevated ‘cheap eats’—Avila had his silhouette painted on Guerrila Tacos’ wall along with his quote “the taco honors the truck”. Guerrila Tacos embodies everything the Arts District stands for and more—and does it with some of the most delicious tacos in hand.
