August is here, and the summer is winding down. Summer vacations and activities will soon be over as students head back to school. David and I have had a fabulous summer reconnecting with family, friends and co-workers, and traveling to Seattle, as well as to Ohio, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. We’ll visit St. Augustine and Niagara Falls in August. Our final trip to Virginia in October for my nephew’s wedding will be the last family get-together this year. Years ago it was easy to lose track of school mates, friends, and even family members. Today’s technology has made it so much easier to maintain these relationships through phone calls, email, Facebook, texting, etc. But for me, the connection is much more personal when it’s face-to-face. Unless you FaceTime or use Skype, technology doesn’t allow you to see a smile or hear laughter. And even then, you don’t get to see the subtle nuances of body language or enjoy the warmth of a hug. We hope this magazine encourages face-to-face interactions between neighbors. The next time you see someone featured on the cover, say hello and share something about yourself and your family. It’s one small step toward becoming part of the fabric of your community. People are what make a neighborhood a living community instead of just a group of buildings. Reach out to me, too. I’d love to share your story. Enjoy the last days of summer. The holidays are just around the corner!

PBG Life: Just What the Doctor Ordered By Darla Parris Smallwood
For native New Yorkers Elliot and Brynne Ellis, moving to Florida was all about achieving a better quality of life. One that included enjoying the outdoors while becoming part of a family-friendly community. And one that did not include scraping ice off the windshield all winter. After Elliot finished his gastroenterology fellowship in Manhattan, he had plenty of offers from local and tristate area private practices. However, having watched his father, aunt and uncle practice medicine in what he refers to as the “grind” of medical practices there, Elliot wanted something different for himself and his future family. He and Brynne began exploring other areas of the country that offered the lifestyle they craved. Miami was initially a top choice – until a practice there flew the couple down for a weekend interview and neglected to include Brynne in the Friday night dinner with the partners. Shortly thereafter, a 8

Palm Beach Gardens doctor invited Elliot and Brynne to a dinner with all the partners and their spouses. For Elliot and Brynne, that Capital Grille dinner exuded the kind of warm friendliness that they were seeking, and did much to “seal the deal.” The couple first moved to West Palm Beach, but two years later, they landed in Mirasol, their home for the past six years. The Ellis family now includes a six-year-old son, Hudson, and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Sienna. Brynne and Elliot couldn’t be happier about the family-friendly nature of their neighborhood. “We love it! Our favorite weekly activity is Friday night dinner at the club. We get a big table with 8-10 families, and the adults get to hang out and relax while the kids run wild enjoying the bounce houses, DJs, face painting, games and balloon artists,” says Brynne. “We also enjoy being outside
with the kids. A weekend tradition since Hudson was born is walking to the gazebo at the front of Mirasol’s east gate to feed the fish, bird-watch and search for alligators.” While Brynne and Elliot prioritize family and togetherness, they also place great value on a strong work ethic. Brynne, who earned dual degrees in finance and marketing at Tulane University, is the Director of Merchandising at Boston Proper, LLC, a women’s clothing company headquartered in Boca Raton. Inspired by fashion, she loves bringing the company’s vision to life. Her frequent annual travels to New York and Europe, she says, are a “major work perk” – though Elliot is quick to note that those trips aren’t such a perk for him! Continued page 10

Dr. Ellis (Elliot) is a board-certified gastroenterologist with offices in West Palm Beach (where he also serves as the Chief of Gastroenterology at Good Samaritan Medical Center) and Palm Beach Gardens. In addition, he is a medical adviser for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of South Florida. Dr. Ellis earned both his undergraduate and medical school degrees at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his internal medicine residency at Yale. While at Yale New
Haven Hospital, he earned the Chief Resident Recognition Award presented to the senior resident with the most exceptional leadership, professionalism, commitment to patient care – and, not surprisingly, work ethic. During his subsequent fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, he was named Chief Gastroenterology Fellow. In 2016, the Physicians of the Palm Beach Medical Society voted Dr. Ellis the number one Palm Beach County gastroenterologist to whom they would most likely refer their family and friends. Both Brynne and Elliot also work to improve the community that they love. They participated in the Emerging Leadership Project of the Jewish Federation of the Palm Beaches that helps young adults become future Palm Beach County leaders. Brynne also serves on the Board of Trustees of 10

Temple Judea of Palm Beach Gardens. In their own way, even the Ellis children are already learning the importance of working to succeed. Hudson, a Benjamin School student who will enter kindergarten this fall, loves golf and tennis, but he also “works hard” during his weekly lessons in the two sports. His favorite activity, however, is chess. A few months ago, he competed in a tournament against players some two years older than he is. His effort and commitment to the game paid off; he won most of his matches. For Sienna, who will enter Temple Beth David’s “threes program” this fall, coping with her parents’ relatively recent decision to take away her beloved pacifier has been the hardest “work” of her young life to date. She devotes most of her energies to dancing, painting, and playing with her older brother. Brynne and Elliot, refusing to succumb to the all-work-andno-play stigma, both enjoy golfing and look forward to the day when their children can join them on the course. “We cannot wait until Hudson and Sienna are older so we can go out as a family foursome!” says Brynne. ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? Hearing Loss Wrecked My Career Written by Dave Rohee; Provided by Denise Gold
The most devastating words an airline pilot will ever hear: “I’m sorry, your hearing is well below our standards and we cannot offer you a position with the airline.” In my case, there was more: “As a matter of fact, your hearing loss is so significant that I suggest that you avoid any noisy environments in the future and definitely stay away from airports.” I was completely at a loss for words. As a commercial pilot who had thousands of hours of flight experience, I was ready to move up to the big jets. I had recently emigrated to Canada to join a major airline and

had passed all the physiological, flight, general health and eyesight tests, only to fail the final test: hearing. The doctor actually offered to give me a second test in one week to see if it would make a difference in case I was suffering an ear infection or had recently recovered from the flu or some other ailment that could have affected my hearing. I readily agreed, only to have the same bad results confirmed at the second test. This destroyed my aviation career. The next twenty years brought a series of career and continued hearing challenges, and I eventually tried two very expensive hearing aids from two different reputable companies. Neither device gave me any satisfaction. But success comes to those who keep searching for better results. The folks at Better Hearing Care of Palm Beach Gardens were a breath of fresh air. Knowledgeable, friendly, professional and caring, they diagnosed my hearing loss and recommended the Oticon solution. I could not be more impressed by the Oticon hearing aids, which are extremely sensitive, programmable for various types of environments, and easily controlled for volume and program changes. What a relief. Only those with hearing loss can appreciate how incredibly effective they are or how much better you feel around your friends and family when you can actually hear again! I urge anyone with any type of hearing loss to give the professionals at Better Hearing Care a call and schedule a hearing analysis appointment. You will not be disappointed!

Bufo Toad Toxicity By Carmen MH Colitz, DVM, PhD, DACVO
Bufo marinus, more commonly known as the cane toad, secretes a hallucinogenic neurotoxin from glands along its sides. Pets that mouth or bite these toads absorb the neurotoxin through their gums, and the poison irritates mucous membranes. Once absorbed, the toxin interferes with the heart rate and rhythm, which can be lifethreatening, particularly for small pets. Initial signs that your pet has come into contact with a cane toad include drooling, foaming at the mouth and bright red gums. Other symptoms of toxicity can include vomiting, stiff limbs, loss of balance and seizures. Consider these tips for keeping your pet away from cane frogs: • Keep your pet leashed when outside, especially during the rainy season, at dusk or early in the morning, when the toads are most active. • Keep your pet away from moist areas, around sprinklers,

under bushes and in other vegetation. These are the places where cane toads frequently hide. If you have reason to believe that your pet has mouthed or bitten a cane toad, take these steps immediately: • Use a damp washcloth to wipe out your pet’s mouth and gums to reduce the amount of toxin absorbed. Do not allow your pet to swallow the water. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOUR PET IS EXPERIENCING A SEIZURE; AND DO NOT USE A HOSE! • Call your veterinarian or Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialty Clinic. Follow whatever instructions you are given. • Try to remain calm. Be prepared to transport your pet as quickly as possible to the facility for emergency treatment. If your pet has an emergency, call us at 561.741.4041; then come right in. Calling before you bring your pet in for treatment will give our staff time to prepare for your individual situation and requirements, and enable us to give you instructions for transport.

Summer Camp Mixes Jewish Learning, Fun Activities By Hope Silverman, BallenIsles Resident
Summer is a time for barbecues and the beach. It’s also the season for many members of the younger generation to attend camp, where they often participate in activities like swimming, playing sports, and doing arts and crafts. Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County and its network of local and global partners offer summer camps where children can have fun while learning about Judaism and building their Jewish identity. At Mandel JCC’s Camp Shalom, campers participate in initiatives that promote Jewish values. For youngsters with special needs, there’s the Mandel JCC’s Camp Tikvah, a division of Camp Shalom. It hosts children ages 6-14 who have varying exceptionalities such as cognitive, emotional, developmental and learning disabilities. All campers are exposed to Israel’s rich culture through the shlichim, Israeli counselors who lead specialized activities. Campers also sing Hebrew songs, participate in Maccabi Games and celebrate Shabbat. Jewish Federation and its partner agencies cultivate future leaders not just here at home, but around the world. At Camp Szarvas in Hungary, teenagers from around the globe gather each summer to learn from each other and celebrate Jewish life. The teens, many of whom come from countries with increasing anti-Semitic activity, discuss with their peers topics such as Jewish identity, diversity and Jewish peoplehood. Camp Szarvas is an initiative of Federation’s partner the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). Contributions to Jewish Federation’s annual campaign ensure that the next generation can enjoy these life-changing experiences, whether here in the Palm Beaches or halfway around the world. To learn more about how Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County strengthens Jewish identity in children and teens, contact Sarah Rogers: 561.242.6633 or sarah.rogers@ jewishpalmbeach.org.

co mm u n i t y n e ws FROM THE DESK OF MAYOR MARINO
Palm Beach Gardens: Then and Now By Mayor Maria Marino
The City of Palm Beach Gardens has a glorious history. It is one that I wish to share, while comparing the city in its early days to the Palm Beach Gardens of today. Incorporated in 1959 by Florida Statute, the initial organizational meeting was held July 25, 1959, in Lake Park, Florida. Herbert Thompson was named the first mayor and Norman Roland became the vice mayor. At that time, the land mass that is now Palm Beach Gardens was considered fresh, unoccupied territory, so city business was conducted in Lake Park. The Florida Construction Company, where the meeting was held, soon became the Public Works Department. Early financing for the city was supplied by Bankers Life and Casualty of Chicago, owned by John D. MacArthur. Today, 58 years later, I represent Palm Beach Gardens as its mayor, while Mark Marciano serves as our vice mayor. City business is conducted in our municipal complex on Military Trail. The complex is set to be renovated and expanded with some of the 1% sales surtax dollars the city now receives from the county. In 1959, Mayor Thompson’s objectives for a well-rounded
city read this way: “…with 3,800 acres of land, by usual standards this should mean about 12,500 lots plus parks and playgrounds, etc. and should accommodate a population of slightly more than 50,000 people. With the steady and growing migration to Florida, Palm Beach Gardens will reach this population within eight years.” Now, 58 years later, the population of Palm Beach Gardens has just reached the 50,000+ mark; however, the size of the city is not 3,800 acres but a land mass that is equivalent to over 55 square miles or 35,200 acres (almost 9 times the original incorporation). To put this into perspective, PGA National alone is 2,340 acres, and the future development of Avenir encompasses 4,800 acres, of which 2,400 will be designated preserve. This will bring the green space in Palm Beach Gardens to more than 50% of our entire city. To read more about our rich history, please visit our website, specifically the section of “City Council Meeting Archived Minutes.” There you find the original meeting minutes dating from 1959 to today. The foresight of those that came before us was truly amazing. mmarino@pbgfl.com | www.pbgfl.com

Don’t Let Mosquitoes Spoil Your Summer Provided by Kelley Higney
Enjoying time outdoors is one of the highlights of summer for many families. But all too often, outdoor adventures are ruined by unwelcome guests called mosquitoes.
saliva as foreign invaders and releases histamines as part of the immune response. Histamines boost blood flow to the bite area, causing itching and swelling. Like it or not, those bumps are your body’s way of defending you against the mosquito’s attack!
Why Do Mosquito Bites Itch and Swell? You may be surprised to learn it isn’t the bite itself that causes swelling and itching. It isn’t venom either. Unlike bees and wasps, which do inject venom when they bite, mosquitoes merely inject saliva containing an anticoagulant to stop blood from clotting and make it easier for mosquitoes to feed. The human immune system, however, views proteins in mosquito
How Can You Stop the Itching and Swelling Fast? Once you understand the reason for the itching and swelling that accompany mosquito bites, it’s easy to see why chemical creams and ointments can’t provide complete relief. They don’t go after the source of the problem. Because your body’s immune response to mosquito saliva injected at the site of a bite is the source of symptoms, the key is to remove that
