David’s stepfather is turning 80, so we will be attending a family reunion in Orlando. As ambassadors, we’ll be participating in a number of events for the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I have been invited to a fundraising luncheon. As a community sponsor with the Town of Jupiter, David and I will have a booth at their Fall Fest. Next up is our nephew’s wedding in Virginia.

Of Those to Whom Much is Given… By Darla Parris Smallwood

The Searcys may not be “beach people,” but they are definitely “Palm Beach Gardens people.” Residents of the town for more than a decade, Darrell and Kori now say they can’t imagine living anyplace else. Darrell, born in Atlanta, Georgia; and Kori, from Evanston, Illinois; grew up pretty far from the shores of the Atlantic. Maybe that explains why you’re more likely to find them relaxing by a sparkling, tranquil pool somewhere than zipping through the waves on a paddleboard, surfboard or jet ski. “We don’t go to the beach much, but we do love hanging out in our backyard or someplace like the Breakers on the weekends,” says Darrell. That’s not to say, however, that Florida’s beautiful beaches haven’t played a role in the couple’s relationship. Well, kind of anyway… In 2006, Darrell, who earned his undergraduate degree in business at Georgia State University and his MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management, was a banker in Atlanta. Meanwhile, Kori, who earned her degree in mass 8

communications at Hampton University in Virginia, had left her New York public relations job for another in Florida. Darrell recalls the first time he met Kori: “It was at a wedding in Miami… I sat across from her at the reception, and then I stalked her until she agreed to marry me.” As soon as he returned to Atlanta, Darrell put his Atlanta house on the market. Soon he was off to Florida to reconnect with Kori and start over. The fact that things were “headed south” in the banking industry by that time, he says, made it easier for him to do the same. Three years (and three proposals) after their first meeting, Kori finally said yes, and the two planned to say their own vows on the sands of South Beach; theirs would be the first wedding at the W there. The couple flew in friends and family and were all set to be married outside until, about two minutes before the ceremony, it began raining. “That sent everybody running inside,” says Darrell, “but we all still had a great time.” Fast forward to the couple’s life

together today, and the popular wisdom that wedding day rain is actually a good omen seems all the wiser. The Searcys lived in Mirabella for seven years before moving to their current home in Mirasol, a neighborhood that the couple says couldn’t be more perfect for them or their children (son Chandler, 16; daughter Campbelle, 13; and son Daschle, 6). “There are so many young families here, and it’s truly one of the most diverse country club communities around. It’s a place where you can feel comfortable even if everyone doesn’t share the same ideology or beliefs,” says Darrell. Furthermore, Palm Beach Gardens as a whole is special, he adds. “The friends, the business people, the community itself – all of that makes it the only place in Florida that I want to be.” The beautiful weather and scenery are a pretty big draw as well, notes Kori, and Daschle finds the sharks, turtles and other marine life in the area particularly exciting. Running Chandler Campbelle & Daschle, the company that Darrell (CEO) and Kori co-founded, keeps them busy. Chandler Campbelle & Daschle provides professional management consulting services to the aviation industry, the U.S. Department of Defense, and federal, civilian, municipal

and commercial organizations. Nevertheless, the Searcys know the value of family time and healthy work/life balance. Kori is a self-proclaimed yoga practitioner and overall “exercise enthusiast,” and both she and Darrell enjoy tennis, good food and wine, and – wait for it – snow skiing. But whether they’re off to Deer Valley, Utah, to strap on those skis, touring Washington, D.C., or exploring the Caribbean or Europe, Darrell and Kori simply love traveling with the children. Exposing the kids to other climates, cultures, languages and experiences, agree Darrell and Kori, is crucial to their education and development. While the Searcy family likes “taking in” all that their community/world at large has to offer, they don’t stop there; they also work hard to “give back.” Darrell is involved with ongoing community service efforts through his membership in Sigma Pi Phi, the first successful and oldest AfricanAmerican Greek-lettered organization. He also serves on the board of the United Way of Palm Beach County. Kori is active with the West Palm Beach chapter of Links, Inc., an international, not-for-profit corporation in which thousands of professional women of color volunteer to enrich and ensure the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. she is the president-elect for the Benjamin School’s parent association. Even the three Searcy children serve through their membership in Jack and Jill of America, Inc., an organization whose mission is to mold future African American leaders “through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.” All five Searcys served as the 2017 host family for Black Ties and French Fries, a family-friendly gala that raises funds to support programs at the Center for Child Counseling. It was the family’s fourth time being involved in the event; their first time was when Daschle was just one year old. “It was such an honor to be asked to host. We’re so happy to be a part of something like this with our kids there, so they could see us practice what we preach to them about serving,” says Darrell. “Our kids are fortunate, and we want

them not only to appreciate that, but to know they have an obligation to help others who aren’t so fortunate.” In 2018, Black Ties and French Fries will take place at The Country Club at Mirasol, and the Searcys say they wouldn’t miss a chance to be involved once again. “From the time I was a child, my parents instilled this adage in me: “Of those to whom much is given, much is required,” says Kori. “We want to model that for the children. Fall in South Florida is filled with family fun, cooler weather and pumpkins. To celebrate the arrival of the season, as well as the return of our seasonal residents, the Town of Jupiter will host its annual Fall Fest on October 7, 2017. The event has something for everyone. For all the little

pumpkins, there will be a kids’ carnival featuring bounce houses, a hay ride, an activity map and face painting. For the adults, the event will showcase many local vendors selling all sorts of wares, from boutique clothing to handmade crafts. Come hungry because there will be plenty of local food vendors and an Octoberfest-style beer garden. As you relax with your food, you’ll enjoy live music by Whiskey Six, one of South Florida's favorite local country bands. While they mainly play modern country, don't be surprised to hear some Cash, Strait, Yoakam or other country classics thrown in. Preparing for "The Fall" By Jill Ball, VP of Operations

I know it’s hard to tell sometimes in South Florida, but the arrival of holiday décor in our local shops and supermarkets means we are officially in the fall season. Perhaps there’s no better time than now to touch on one of the biggest dangers to the senior population: the risk of fall-ing. That first fall to the ground may be abrupt and seemingly out of nowhere. “Mom had a little mishap yesterday,” I’ll hear people say. Or a usually independent, mobile gentlemen will proclaim, “It’s the darndest thing, I just lost my footing and tripped all of a sudden.” It’s actually no surprise when someone not prone to ambulation issues suddenly just loses his/her footing or balance. As we age, our mobility starts to decrease slowly. Although diseases like Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis can be an expedient to decreased independent ambulation, we typically do not notice gradual changes in ourselves or loved ones whom we see regularly. That being said, it is important for seniors and those caring for them to implement a system of checks and balances when it comes to mobility within the home and in routine environment(s). Consider this checklist for preventing trips and topples: • Check home walkways and paths for rugs or narrow areas/ turns that may make it hard to navigate or create tripping hazards. • In doorways where a transition in flooring may occur, insure that there isn’t a “lip” or “bump” that may snag footing or be of hazard to someone with a shuffling gait. • On steps, use brightly colored tape or paint to mark the edge. • Always check any new medication to determine whether dizziness or loss of balance is a listed side effect.

• Since the bathroom (especially at shower/bath time) is where an individual is most susceptible to falling, install handrails in the bathroom and shower/tub and a shower chair in the shower. • Replace pieces of furniture that have wheels or slide easily, like barstools, chairs and kitchen islands. • Use/Encourage the use of a cane or walker if you have/ your loved one has occasional or slight balance issues. Seniors may not always need assistance, but these adaptive tools are excellent preventative measures. • Wear/Encourage the wearing of appropriate footwear that provides good traction and support. • Have your/your loved one’s eyesight checked regularly. • Keep the living area as well-lit and clutter-free as possible. Regular attention to the aforementioned tips goes a long way towards keeping little tumbles and major spills at bay. It’s hard to believe the summer is over, but the school year is in full swing. And now that students in our public schools have found their groove, their teachers can tell which of them need a little extra assistance. That’s where the Anne & Sam Klein Jewish Coalition for Literacy comes in. The program helps students in local public elementary schools improve their reading scores. Volunteer reading partners who are 18 or older are trained by a professional reading specialist about strategies to help children learn to read. Claire is one Claire volunteers once a week in a local of those volunteer public school, helping first-graders with reading partners. their reading skills. The mother of two grown children, she says that getting involved was her chance to help kids develop stronger reading skills and assist in providing them with educational advantages similar to what she afforded her own children. Now a volunteer for 20 years, Claire still makes weekly visits a local school to work with first-graders. The Literacy Coalition is just one of the ways Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center connects members of our community with inspiring volunteer opportunities. Although there are more than 400 volunteers spending extra time with these children in our schools, the need for additional assistance is always there.
