from the publisher I hope everyone enjoyed your summer. For me, fall means hello to football season and goodbye to a summer spent as a baseball widow (since I lack any and all enthusiasm for my husband’s beloved Red Sox.) A University of Miami grad, I can now turn my attention to rooting for the ‘Canes. Of course, since my son is a Florida State graduate, I try to support the Seminoles too. At any rate, I look forward to the fun family rivalry. What are you looking forward to this fall? If there’s something you’d like to see included in an upcoming issue, we’ll do our best to incorporate your suggestion, and if you’re involved in a local not-forprofit or charity, we’d be happy to promote that organization’s event or simply help bring awareness to the cause. Even as you and your family trade the lazy days of summer for the hectic pace of school functions, fundraisers, charity events, seasonal visitors etc., remember to take time for yourself. Grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, put your feet up and spend a few minutes enjoying YOUR neighborhood magazine!

Periodontal Disease Treatment and Gum Disease Care Provided by Rebecca Longo
The word periodontal means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). Since plaque and calculus can destroy the gums and bone, periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. However, not only is periodontal disease the number one reason for tooth loss, but research also suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as contributing to increased risk during pregnancy. Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease. Below are some common signs and symptoms of periodontal disease: • Bleeding gums: Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss. • Loose teeth or altered spacing between teeth: This can

result from bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone). • Persistent bad breath • Pus around the teeth and gums • Red, puffy or receding gums • Tenderness or Discomfort (This may result from buildup of plaque/caculus/bacteria. Your dentist and dental hygienist will evaluate for periodontal disease and recommend the appropriate treatment, which is dependent upon the type/severity of disease. In the early stages of gingivitis before damage has been done, improved daily oral hygiene and regular cleanings will be recommended. If the disease is more advanced, scaling and root planing will be recommended. In this deep cleaning procedure, tartar, plaque and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line and rough spots on root surfaces are smoothed. Medications, special medicated mouth rinses and an electric toothbrush may also be recommended. If pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery by a board certified periodontist may be required. If you have questions about dentistry/oral health, or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at 561.513.4401 or visit www.appearanceImplants.com.

Celebrate the Season with Town of Jupiter’s
October Fall Fest By Kate Pokorny, Communications & Events Coordinator
Fall in South Florida is filled with family fun, cooler weather and pumpkins. To celebrate the arrival of the season, as well as the return of our seasonal residents, the Town of Jupiter will host its annual Fall Fest on October 7, 2017. The event has something for everyone. For all the little pumpkins, there will be a kids’ carnival featuring bounce houses, a hay ride, an activity map and face painting. For the adults, the event will showcase many local vendors selling all sorts of wares, from boutique clothing to hand-made crafts. Come hungry because there will be plenty of local food vendors and an
Octoberfest-style beer garden. As you relax with your food, you’ll enjoy live music by Whiskey Six, one of South Florida's favorite local country bands. While they mainly play modern country, don't be surprised to hear some Cash, Strait, Yoakam or other country classics thrown in. All you animal lovers out there will enjoy the Halloween costume show for dogs, spotlighting some of our cutest local adoptable pets. The Town of Jupiter’s Fall Fest is an event too good to miss! Mark your calendar for Sat., Oct. 7, and join us at The Plaza Down Under on the Riverwalk from noon to 5pm for a great time!

Blooming and Thriving in Jupiter By Darla Parris Smallwood
Some people bloom where they are planted. The Randazzos are also blooming where they have been replanted. Born in the Philippines, Riza moved to the United States when she was eight years old, growing up in Syracuse, New York. Vincent is a New Jersey native. The couple, now married for four years, met through OkCupid while they both still lived up north. “My girlfriends wanted me to try the app, but I kept thinking, ‘It’s a free dating app. There have to be a lot of weirdos on there.’ But after six months, they finally convinced me to try it for just one month, and I met Vincent the very first week.” Riza was immediately drawn to Vincent’s dependability and straightforwardness, she says. “He’d say he’d call and then 8

really call, not text or just fail to follow through all together. He also told me right away that he was looking for a long-term relationship and to have a family. The two of us were on the same page from Day One.” That’s not to say, however, that the two jumped in headfirst during their initial face-to-face encounter. “We met up at a wine bar, and Vincent picked a table near the door so he could get a quick getaway if necessary,” Riza recalls. He quickly changed his mind, however. He and Riza moved to a table farther back, and their potential drinks-only meeting blossomed into a full-fledged dinner date. “We clicked and had three more dates that same week,” says Riza. Within 18 months, the couple married. Vincent, a stock market analyst, worked in New York City, while Riza taught middle school science in Queens until just a few months
before the birth of their first child. By the time their now twoand-a-half year-old son Mason arrived, they were already starting to dream about leaving their Jersey City home for a slower paced life in a place better suited to raising children. Knowing that a move to the New York suburbs would lengthen his commute into the city (not to mention be incredibly expensive), Vincent began looking for similar work outside of New York, landing his current position with Lowry Research in Palm Beach Gardens. In May 2016, even without knowing a soul in the area, the Randazzos packed up and moved to Jupiter. Since Riza wanted to live in an area where she’d be surrounded by other young families, she and Vincent chose to live in Abacoa’s Windsor Park. As much as they instantly liked the neighborhood, Riza hated leaving behind her family and friends in New York and New Jersey, and meeting people in her new town was initially somewhat of a struggle. “We moved at a hot time of year, so everyone was inside with the air conditioning turned up.” Eventually, however, Riza began to run into other stay-athome moms at My Gym, in the local parks, and at the many local kids’ activities where she took Mason. Before they knew it, Riza, Vincent and Mason had all made their own vibrant network of friends. Moms’ brunches, dads’ nights out, and
children’s play dates soon became the order of the day. “Now our friends have become like our family here,” says Riza. The Randazzos have no regrets about exchanging the hustle and bustle of their old big-city life for their new active outdoor lifestyle here in Florida. They especially appreciate that they can hop into the car and pop over to the beach without having to fight traffic on the way, or the crowds when Continued page 10

they finally get there. “We’re still exploring the area. We try to do something fun and new every weekend, like visit the zoo in West Palm or the Children’s Museum in Jensen Beach… We love all the things to do here, and we don’t want to take this state for granted,” says Riza. Still, the Randazzos do enjoy traveling outside the state as well. Even young Mason has already been to Hawaii and Aruba. “We think it’s important for children to travel and see the world. It’s good for them to be exposed to other cultures;
it helps them be more openminded,” Riza explains, adding that a trip to Switzerland and other parts of Europe may not be too far in the offing. “But with two children, we may have to wait awhile before going to Thailand or elsewhere in Asia because those flights are so long.” Two children? Yep, Mason’s little sister is set to hit the scene in early November. The Randazzos are joyfully preparing for her debut while also searching for their new home, one that will still decidedly be in Abacoa. After all, the Randazzos have family here. ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? Capturing Life By Lynn Hernandez
From the first time I picked up a camera as a teenager in 1994, it has been my great joy to capture relationships and special moments through photography. In 2002, while on a shoot photographing family members interacting with each other, I realized I wanted to be a photographer for the rest of my life. I’m lucky. Over the years, I’ve taken countless other photographs that have made me feel exactly the way I felt the day that family’s photos were taken. I’m committed to giving my clients that same great feeling when they look at their own photos. Before I moved to West Palm Beach three years ago, I lived in Miami, where I often photographed elaborate weddings of the eight-ten-hour variety. That wasn’t for me. Since relocating, I’ve gotten back to who I am: a photographer whose passion lies in capturing the truly meaningful moments that define the love shared by couples, and by entire families. These days, I’m a portrait and wedding photographer who specializes photographing vacationing families and couples celebrating intimate destination weddings. I capture the priceless moments as families enjoy a great getaway, and as couples pledge their love to each other on beaches, at resorts, and in courthouses and gardens. I work hard to ensure that your special West Palm Beach visit lasts a lifetime by capturing on film the love and
connection you have with each other. Whether you are all about taking quiet walks on the beach with the love of your life or giving laughter-filled piggyback rides to your kids, your personality will shine during my carefully and individually crafted photo-shoots for you and your loved ones. As a mom of kids that range from 5 to 22, I understand the importance of preserving the fleeting moments of life. My children inspire me to follow my passion and true purpose as a photographer. I bring dynamic energy, professional guidance, and individual attention to every photo shoot. My promise to you is that I’ll create an enjoyable experience for you and your family, and deliver portraits that will make you feel the love and remember the fun every time you look at them. Recently the publishers of The Wedding and Honeymoon Guide for Discover the Palm Beaches Florida (where I am a partner) wrote an article* about my experiences as a wedding photographer. They also selected seven of my photographs** for the guide. The 5000 distributed copies of the guide give me a unique opportunity to connect with even more people who love each other, some of whom I hope will trust me to tell their story. I couldn’t be more honored to be featured, representing West Palm Beach, a city that I have grown to love deeply. *Read the article at https://issuu.com/passportpublications/docs/ discover_wedding_honeymoon_guide. **Two are on p. 8 of Experience Weddings in Florida; two are on p. 14 of Wedding Essentials; three appear with the aforementioned article.

Plan Early for College Accommodations By Jennifer Percival, M.Ed., CRC Clinical Support Specialist for Transition
Students, if you are headed back to college or are attending college for the first time, be sure to meet with staff from your college’s disability services office before the semester begins. Many students wait until they feel they need an accommodation to schedule an appointment with the college disability services office, but this does not support long-term success. Completing the application and arranging accommodations can take days or even weeks. Begin the process early so you have the resources in place throughout your entire college experience. Remember that accommodations for college students are covered under the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA); you have a right to this support. What to bring to your first appointment at a college disability services office: • High school/college transcript • EP/504 plan • Information about how your disability impacts learning • Required documentation about your disability (Ask the office what documents they will need from you. Colleges may require specific information, so ask before your appointment.) • Any questions you have about the services offered While services provided by college disability offices will be individualized for your needs, these are some typically offered general services:

What is NuCalm?
Improving Your Health with Custom Medications
By Rick Upson, Elizabeth Montgomery, and Ashley Seitz-Garofolo
Everyone knows what it feels like to be stressed, and everyone copes with his/her individual stress levels differently. Stress can negatively impact life, resulting in changes in sleep, diet, mood and cognitive abilities, and even weakening the immune system. The NuCalm System® is the world’s only technology patent-approved system to lower stress levels and improve sleep without the use of drugs. Like the flip of a switch, the NuCalm System® can, within minutes, reduce stress levels in the brain, thereby improving sleep, balance, focus, and memory, while increasing hormones and strengthening the immune response. By lowering those stress levels, the NuCalm System® can also improve heart and respiratory health and decrease cortisol levels and inflammation. NuCalm works by taking control of brain waves. It brings the high beta waves (which trigger fear and anxiety) down to the alpha/theta waves (which elicit relaxation, meditation, sleep, and healing), allowing you to reach a deep meditationlike state. Four key components of the NuCalm System® work together to turn off your brain’s “flight or fight” response, permitting your brain to reach a state of synchrony and relaxation that flows throughout your body. 1. NuCalm’s proprietary supplements: Developed in 2005, NuCalm’s all-natural and hypoallergenic supplements come as a chewable tablet or as a topical cream to be applied to the right and left carotid arteries. 2. NuCalm’s Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) device: Developed in 2004, This device, applied behind the right and left ear, catalyzes the effectiveness of NuCalm supplements to interrupt the body’s natural stress response.
Customized Medications made for
HUMANS & THEIR PETS
3. NuCalm’s app and headphones: The app, to be used with noice-cancelling headphones, contains NuCalm’s proprietary neuro-acoustic software that modulate the brain’s alpha/theta waves. 4. NuCalm’s mask: It blocks visual stimulation to increase alpha waves and help you maintain a relaxed state. The NuCalm System® is used to relax dental patients, to help restore health for cancer patients, and to assist athletes in battling jet lag. Equally effective for anyone who experiences everyday life stress, the system is available at Palm Beach Compounding Pharmacy in Jupiter, Florida. Palm Beach Compounding Pharmacy in Jupiter has been compounding high-quality medications for people and their pets since 2004. Visit www.palmbeachcompounding.com. School of Rock: Everyone Should Feel Like a Rock Star By Darla Parris Smallwood
When Rick Rothschild realized that his young son’s guitar lessons were limited to isolated, sit-in-a-room-and-practicechords experiences, he knew there had to be a better way. Learning to play music should be joyful and engaging, not lonely and rote. Then he saw a news story about Paul Green, who had started a Philadelphia performance-based music program for kids in 1998 that eventually expanded into franchises all over the world and became known as The School of Rock. “I was so excited that I couldn’t even finish watching the segment. I got on the phone, called School of Rock’s CEO and left a voice mail that said, ‘Call me – now!’” The CEO did call Rick, and in 2008, Rick opened his own School of Rock in North Palm Beach. Although he had worked as an importer of goods for 25 years, Rick had long volunteered as a Big Brother and dreamed of someday working with children. While some questioned whether the school would ever take off, its success prompted Rick to open a second location in Lake Worth just three years later. School of Rock’s performance-based model not only teaches music, Rick explains, but also fosters the kinds of relationships, teamwork, interaction and engagement that make music come alive. The result is not only a lasting love for all things music, but confidence and leadership that empower students to “command the stage” in every aspect of their lives. School of Rock offers professional instruction in guitar, bass, keys, vocals, drums, wind, brass, and strings.
A unique approach to teaching music. Kids join a band and perform live rock concerts in front of an audience. More inspired to learn, more motivated to excel and more confident to take on the world!

Rock 101 and 102, performance, and graduate programs challenge students to perform as opening or mainstage acts at seasonal shows and/or real rock venues and events. Always proud to support the local rock scene, School of Rock students have taken the stage in places such as the Meyer Amphitheatre, the Kravis Center, and a number of local clubs and restaurants, and appeared at WPB SunFest, the South Florida Fair, and many other events. Top students can audition for the School of Rock All Stars Program and spend the summer on a real concert tour, performing alongside rock legends and taking the stage at
venues such as Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre and events like Lollapalooza. Rick’s students also visit and host other Schools of Rock. “There are 180+ Schools of Rock around the world, and our goal is to play with them all,” says Rick. “We really will go to the ends of the earth to make music come alive for our students,” adds Mary Mandel, general manager of the North Palm Beach location. Mary actually joined the School of Rock team because of the positive impact the school had on her own nephew. “We are honestly like musical social workers,” says Rick. “We take even incredibly shy kids who can’t let go of Mom long enough to pick up an instrument, and help them gain the confidence to do things they thought were impossible.” And since we all know that kids aren’t the only ones whose lives can be enriched by music, School of Rock also offers performance-based instruction for adult students. “Whether you are five years old or an adult working on your bucket list, we believe that the world is your oyster once you get on stage.” Whatever your musical goals are, says Rick, School of Rock is committed to helping you reach them in a fun, dynamic atmosphere. “It’s never too early – or too late – to get started.” The North Palm Beach School of Rock is located at 11650 U.S. Highway 1.
