from the publisher I hope everyone enjoyed your summer. For me, fall means hello to football season and goodbye to a summer spent as a baseball widow (since I lack any and all enthusiasm for my husband’s beloved Red Sox.) A University of Miami grad, I can now turn my attention to rooting for the ‘Canes. Of course, since my son is a Florida State graduate, I try to support the Seminoles too. At any rate, I look forward to the fun family rivalry. What are you looking forward to this fall? If there’s something you’d like to see included in an upcoming issue, we’ll do our best to incorporate your suggestion, and if you’re involved in a local not-forprofit or charity, we’d be happy to promote that organization’s event or simply help bring awareness to the cause. Even as you and your family trade the lazy days of summer for the hectic pace of school functions, fundraisers, charity events, seasonal visitors etc., remember to take time for yourself. Grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, put your feet up and spend a few minutes enjoying YOUR neighborhood magazine!

Becky Williams

co ve r s t or y B E C KY WILLIA MS

True Colors By Darla Parris Smallwood

Florida girl. Mom. Singer. Teacher. Self-described “gym rat.” Becky Williams is all of those things. But in order to see every one of her true colors, you have to take a gander at her paintings too. A Miami native, Becky moved to Palm Beach Gardens some 25 years ago because of a college boyfriend. “Isn’t that always the reason?” she laughs. “He no longer lives here, but I stayed. Miami is so congested that I can’t even find my way around there anymore. In Palm Beach Gardens, you get the same nice weather, but with a small town feel. I love it here.” She and her son, Tre (13) particularly love life in their Evergrene neighborhood, where they’ve lived for the past dozen years. “The community clubhouse is a great place 8

to meet and bond with people. I have lots of good friends because of that,” says Becky. Tre enjoys playing basketball at that clubhouse, in addition to participating on teams for the local recreation center and the Benjamin School, where he is in eighth grade this year. “He’s really a sports fanatic, says Becky. He loves watching ALL sports.” However, when she was Tre’s age, Becky’s interests lay elsewhere. She began singing at age 10 or 11. She participated in the Miami girls’ choir and studied vocal performance for a year at Florida State University before changing her major to what she deemed the more “practical” path of elementary education. She later earned her master’s degree in early childhood education from FSU as well.

Becky has taught kindergarten and pre-kindergarten for 18 years, even though she took a decade off after Tre was born. She currently teaches pre-K children with special needs at Meadow Park Elementary in West Palm Beach. Hitting the gym at 5:30am each day before heading off to school, she says, helps gives her the energy she needs to be creative and dynamic in motivating her students. “I currently work with kids with mild language deficits, teaming with the speech pathologist to get them talking. My favorite way to do that is to sing with the children while playing my guitar. Teaching through the arts really does build language.” Becky also does lots of painting projects with her students, which is unsurprising, since a few years back, Becky discovered her own latent talent for the visual arts as well. “Maybe five and a half years ago, I was visiting Cincinnati

and stumbled into this little art gallery in a mall. The next day, it was almost like I woke up and thought, not ‘I’d like to paint,’ but ‘I need to paint.’ I think it was therapy at first. I was going through a difficult separation/divorce. I was a mess really. The painting kept me busy; it made me happy; it saved me.” She began by using markers and pastels before heading off to a local studio where she would being experimenting with painting. Largely self-taught, Becky says she’s grateful to the fellow artists who continue to encourage and even mentor her as she grows in her own art. She currently works in acrylics and mixed media, and gravitates to whimsical depictions of beautiful women and mermaids with large eyes, luscious lips and long lashes, as well as to tropical scenes that frequently featuring flowers and palms. “I have a little bit of an obsessive personality, I guess. all-in painting mermaids until I get tired of that. Then I’ll switch over to painting lots of poppies and palms.” Whatever she paints, bright colors and big contrasts are her signature. Though her painting may seem a relatively new facet of Becky’s life, the visual artist in her has clearly long been clamoring to emerge:

“When I was growing up in the 80s, my dad was the minister of a small church. Needless to say, we had no money. But I loved clothes, so I’d go to Bloomingdale’s and look at all the painted tee shirts that were so cool back then. Then I’d go home and cut up my dad’s old tee shirts and draw designs on them with fabric markers to make them look just like the ones at the store. When I wore them to school, I don’t think anyone even knew that I’d made them myself. I was a really quiet kid who kept to myself, so I certainly didn’t tell them.” While it may have taken a while for Becky the Artist to burst fully onto the scene, she seems to be here to stay. “It’s such a big part of my life now. I come home from work and turn on some soft music in the background and just paint. It’s like a meditation really.” You can see more of Becky’s art at Becky Williams Art Work on Facebook or rebeccartist50 on Instagram. ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? 10 Things Sellers Should Do Once the “For Sale” Sign is in the Ground

Don’t be puzzled by the real estate market in the Palm Beaches

By Steve and Lauren Hollander

1. Say yes to every showing. Every showing could be “the one.” Some buyers cannot, or will not, reschedule. The more buyers who see your house, particularly right after it hits the market, the quicker it will sell. 2. Leave the lights on. Buyers decide within 30 seconds whether they like a house. Opening the door to a welcoming and cheery bright room impacts a buyer’s emotions. 3. Crank up the air conditioning. Buyers will not make an offer on a home in which they are uncomfortable. 4. Invite your nosy neighbors to come in. Chances are good that someone in the neighborhood knows someone who might be the perfect buyer for your house. 5. Keep the house show-worthy. The cleaning and decluttering never stops. Cooking smells, pet odors, unmade beds, wet towels in the bathroom — all these signs of normal life need to go. 6. Remember that Fido can cost you $10,000. That is no exaggeration. Sellers cancel showings every day because they can’t get home to walk the dog. 7. Tone down the kids’ rooms. It pays to minimize the Star Wars and princess décor, no matter how well done. Orchidcolored walls, music star posters and stuffed animal collections broadcast that you are selling a “used” house.

Putting the

Pieces Together

8. Keep your stuff safe. Don’t create temptation by leaving cameras on the coffee table, diamond earrings on the dresser or prescriptions in the bathroom. 9. Make yourself scarce. When sellers are present, buyers cannot take emotional possession of a home, they see it as yours, not theirs. Innocent questions from buyers can cost you. Chatting with buyers is more likely to hurt the sale price than help you sell. 10. Refuse to let buyers drive you nuts. Buyers can be inconsiderate. They come late for appointments or fail to show up at all. They make offhand comments about the home that can hurt a homeowner’s feelings. Selling a home is business. The agent should handle the buyers until it is time to hand over the keys.  Correction: The byline for the August article incorrectly gave credit to Florida Realtors® but the article was written by Steve Hollander. ex p e r t c o n t r i b utor HACKETT HOLISTIC HEALTH

Karma Burning: Contemporary Traditional Medicine, Episode V By Dr. Tracy L. Hackett, AP DAOM

An appeal to antiquity this is not. The idea that something is better because it is ancient or a traditional belief is a logical fallacy (an invalid argument to prove something as true, such as the famous “flat earth” theory.) Parts of my previous installments address challenges to that very sort of thinking that I encountered repeatedly while in India. However, my experiences (and those of my patients) with traditional medicine are contemporary with actual living, breathing results of better health then, and now. This fact separates a good deal of holistic medicine from the fallacy because the results are achieved in the present day every time the modalities are applied. The results then, transcend mere rhetoric, belief and theory. Anthropologically speaking, human beings are unsentimental about moving less useful practices into obsolescence fairly quickly. Our biological imperative to prevail and survive ensures this to some degree. The vibrant culture of India opened my eyes to contradictions and challenges, but also to the deep, vital living traditions of medicine. Far beyond the scope of Ayurveda exists Siddha medicine, of which my doctor was an elder practitioner. He had Indian government approvals for handling and dispensing many substances considered toxic. He applied time-tested methods to create compounds that profoundly improved my health. The theory of “like cures like” is, at its basis, similar to homeopathic medicine, but employs compounded substances heat-treated over long periods of time. For example, mercury is fired continuously for 36 years before being used in medicines to treat neurological conditions. To further my understanding of Siddha medicine, I traveled with a monk fluent in the area’s languages and dialectics. He also knew many of the doctors we visited and interviewed.

These doctors’ histories, stories and practices are worth a book in themselves. As a result of these experiences, I brought home a desire to find a tradition-based medicine that would continue my healing process, while also translating more easily to American culture. I discovered a powerful healthcare system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has a United States licensure process and solid scope of practice in most states. I have never regretted making that decision, especially since I regained my health completely through TCM. TCM is a powerful system of medicine with origins in China and the Korean peninsula. TCM theory regards the human being as an open system of open systems contiguous with the surrounding environment. This theory does not separate mind, body or spirit. They are intermeshed, interdependent, and inter-transformational, yet comprised of the same fundament of life/being: Qi. The elegant example of this is embodied in the TaiJi symbol that illustrates the Yin and the Yang of all things: [. There is a point of yin (black) within the yang (white) and vice versa. So how does all this help you? We start with a complete review of health history – yes, I want to know everything! Acupuncture and what I call East-West Functional Medicine can help with many health issues, and I primarily diagnose and treat based upon the clinical information that I collect. If questions remain, advanced lab testing is available to provide a better sense of gut function and nutrient absorption. In future installments, I will share my perspective on muscle and joint pain, perimenopause and menopause treatment, insomnia and emotional balance. If you have questions now, please contact me at DrTracy@hackettholistichealth.com or visit www.hackettholistichealth.com. 

b u s ine s s p ro fi le LYNN STUDIOS, INC.

Capturing Life By Lynn Hernandez

From the first time I picked up a camera as a teenager in 1994, it has been my great joy to capture relationships and special moments through photography. In 2002, while on a shoot photographing family members interacting with each other, I realized I wanted to be a photographer for the rest of my life. I’m lucky. Over the years, I’ve taken countless other photographs that have made me feel exactly the way I felt the day that family’s photos were taken. I’m committed to giving my clients that same great feeling when they look at their own photos. Before I moved to West Palm Beach three years ago, I lived in Miami, where I often photographed elaborate weddings of the eight-ten-hour variety. That wasn’t for me. Since relocating, I’ve gotten back to who I am: a photographer whose passion lies in capturing the truly meaningful moments that define the love shared by couples, and by entire families. These days, I’m a portrait and wedding photographer who specializes photographing vacationing families and couples celebrating intimate destination weddings. I capture the priceless moments as families enjoy a great getaway, and as couples pledge their love to each other on beaches, at resorts, and in courthouses and gardens. I work hard to ensure that your special West Palm Beach visit lasts a lifetime by capturing on film the love and

connection you have with each other. Whether you are all about taking quiet walks on the beach with the love of your life or giving laughter-filled piggyback rides to your kids, your personality will shine during my carefully and individually crafted photo-shoots for you and your loved ones. As a mom of kids that range from 5 to 22, I understand the importance of preserving the fleeting moments of life. My children inspire me to follow my passion and true purpose as a photographer. I bring dynamic energy, professional guidance, and individual attention to every photo shoot. My promise to you is that I’ll create an enjoyable experience for you and your family, and deliver portraits that will make you feel the love and remember the fun every time you look at them. Recently the publishers of The Wedding and Honeymoon Guide for Discover the Palm Beaches Florida (where I am a partner) wrote an article* about my experiences as a wedding photographer. They also selected seven of my photographs** for the guide. The 5000 distributed copies of the guide give me a unique opportunity to connect with even more people who love each other, some of whom I hope will trust me to tell their story. I couldn’t be more honored to be featured, representing West Palm Beach, a city that I have grown to love deeply. *Read the article at https://issuu.com/passportpublications/docs/ discover_wedding_honeymoon_guide. **Two are on p. 8 of Experience Weddings in Florida; two are on p. 14 of Wedding Essentials; three appear with the aforementioned article.

A Better than Par Country Club Experience By James M. Gelfand, General Manager, PGA National Members Club

Between luxury amenities, admission to exclusive events, and access to stateof-the-art facilities and restaurants, there is already a nearly endless list of reasons to join the Club at PGA National. Now you can add affordability to that list. This fall, for a limited time only, the Members Club is offering discounted initiation rates. The non-refundable golf initiation fee has been reduced to just $15,000 and the tennis initiation to only $4,000. All deposits for the under-45 junior executive golfers, social, and recreation memberships have been waived entirely. Even better, regardless of whether you are a PGA National resident, a variety of memberships (including golf, tennis, sport, social, and junior) are available to you. No matter what your interests, there is much to enjoy. The impressive 33,000-square-foot Sports & Racquet Club (with access to unmatched fitness facilities,18 Har-Tru

tennis courts, pickle ball, pop tennis, a saltwater lap pool, racquetball, croquet lawns and over 65 weekly classes) is certainly a member favorite. The newly renovated private clubhouse offers a variety of family-friendly social activities. The full golf membership offers the most extensive privileges, with unlimited access to five championship courses, including the Champion Golf Course. Being able to play on the course home to the famous PGA Tour Honda Classic

will surely appeal to any golf aficionado. The multiple golf schools on property (like Leadbetter Golf Academy and Pelz Golf School) can help you improve

your game. PGA Tour Professionals can even assist you indoors at the Bear Trap, our golf training center. The new renovations to our Palmer Golf Course provide an unparalleled golfing experience as well. Not only is a PGA membership an incredible value in itself, it also gives you access to the world-class amenities of the four-star PGA National Resort & Spa. Member-preferred pricing is extended for resort accommodations, the 40,000-square-foot full-service spa and salon, the seven resort dining establishments, and the retail specialty shops. Members also enjoy access to the resort infinity pool, outdoor whirlpool, and kiddie splash zone. They can even indulge in the healing properties of two mineral pools with salts from the Dead Sea and the Salies-de-Béarn of France as they luxuriate at the Conde Nast Top 25 Resort Spa that was also awarded “Best Place to be Pampered” by Florida Weekly. For more information, contact the membership office at 561.627.1800 or visit pgamembersclub.com. ■

Understanding Asthma By Victoria Vought, MSN, ARNP, PPCNP-BC

Asthma is the most common chronic illness in children. The disease affects the lungs’ sensitive airways, causing them to become inflamed and narrow. As the airways swell, they make phlegm (mucous), resulting in breathing difficulty. Though often hereditary, asthma is not contagious. The disease may be classified as mild, moderate, or severe, and as intermittent or persistent. Common asthma triggers for children are allergens, smoking, strong smells, outdoor air quality, upper respiratory illnesses, weather changes, exercise and stress. Asthma Symptoms When less air flows through narrowed airways, breathing becomes increasingly difficult. A child with asthma may experience shortness of breath, bouts of coughing, a wheezing (whistling sound) when breathing, and/or chest tightness. Symptoms may be worse at night or in the early morning. What to Do When You see the Signs in Your Child Notify your pediatrician if your child coughs at night or with exercise, has a prolonged cough after an upper respiratory infection (cold), wheezes, gets sick frequently or has

breathing problems. An asthma attack is a sudden onset and worsening of symptoms. A serious asthma attack occurs when the airways become too swollen and narrow and the lungs cannot get enough air. This is a medical emergency. Diagnosis and Treatment of Asthma Your child’s pediatrician or pediatric healthcare provider (ARNP, PA, DO) will ask questions related to asthma symptoms (current and historical) and listen to your child’s lungs with a stethoscope to assess breathing and lungs sounds. Sometimes pulmonary function tests (such as spirometry) may be recommended. After gathering information and physically assessing your child, your healthcare provider will work with you to develop an individualized asthma treatment plan. This plan will help resolve current symptoms and aid in controlling the child’s asthma. This action plan may include oral and inhaled medications, tips for avoiding triggers, and exercise guidance. (Asthma is not a reason to avoid exercise.) For more information about Infants and Children, PA, call our office at 561.242.0505 or visit our website www. infantsandchildren.net. 

Celebrate the Season with Town of Jupiter’s

October Fall Fest By Kate Pokorny, Communications & Events Coordinator

Fall in South Florida is filled with family fun, cooler weather and pumpkins. To celebrate the arrival of the season, as well as the return of our seasonal residents, the Town of Jupiter will host its annual Fall Fest on October 7, 2017. The event has something for everyone. For all the little pumpkins, there will be a kids’ carnival featuring bounce houses, a hay ride, an activity map and face painting. For the adults, the event will showcase many local vendors selling all sorts of wares, from boutique clothing to hand-made crafts. Come hungry because there will be plenty of local food vendors and an

Octoberfest-style beer garden. As you relax with your food, you’ll enjoy live music by Whiskey Six, one of South Florida's favorite local country bands. While they mainly play modern country, don't be surprised to hear some Cash, Strait, Yoakam or other country classics thrown in. All you animal lovers out there will enjoy the Halloween costume show for dogs, spotlighting some of our cutest local adoptable pets. The Town of Jupiter’s Fall Fest is an event too good to miss! Mark your calendar for Sat., Oct. 7, and join us at The Plaza Down Under on the Riverwalk from noon to 5pm for a great time! 

5 Tips for Introducing Home Care By Jill Ball, VP of Operations

One of the most rewarding and sometimes challenging aspects of my position here at VIP America is meeting with a family or potential client to complete a new client assessment. Sometimes the transition into home care is quite smooth, with all involved parties (potential client, spouse, family, health professionals, friends etc.) on the same page. At other times I find myself meeting with someone who has just become aware that he/she may receive home care, or even with someone who arrives in my office still unclear as to why he/she is there. In such cases, the transition to home care does not always go quite so smoothly. Here are 5 tips for introducing the idea of home health care to a loved one: 1. Stay calm, cool, and collected while discussing home care. If you’re frazzled, your loved one will be too. Be positive. This does not need to be a bad change or a negative experience. 2. Gather information and explore your options. There is no “one size fits all” home health care plan. Each client we service has a care plan as unique as his/her needs. We specialize in a wide variety of diagnoses (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, disabled adults, diabetic patients, cognitive impairments, multiple sclerosis, etc.). Call our intake nurse to discuss what type of schedule and level of care would work for your loved one. Some clients only need occasional homemaker/companion services while others may need daily assistance with their personal care.

3. Allow your loved one to express emotions. While you’ve had time to process the potential change, this may be the first time the situation has even crossed your loved one’s mind. Feeling a wide range of emotions is normal, especially for someone suffering from a neurological disease such as Alzheimer’s, dementia or Parkinson’s. For these people, so much is changing in their lives that they are prone to be much more fearful and emotional than they would typically be. 4. Don’t argue. If your loved one is not responding positively, simply walk away and try to approach the subject again at a later time. Don’t make matters worse by arguing, and refrain from phrases like “We have no other choice” and “This is what we have to do now.” Avoid threats such as “If you want to stay at home…” or “If you don’t do this, then I won’t be able to help you anymore.” 5. Remind your loved one that the goal is assistance, not control. The common misconception is that home care is about taking over the individual’s daily care. This could not be further from the truth. We are not task masters that come in and introduce new routines or methods to control how a person conducts daily life. Our caregivers are there to help clients stay in their own homes, where they see familiar faces and enjoy comfortable surroundings for as long as possible. VIP America, LLC has been referring quality caregivers to the southeast and southwest coasts of Florida since 1997. We offer complimentary, in-home assessments to discuss and explore all your home care options. Call us today at 561.585.4535 to see how we can help you and/or your loved one. 

co mm u n i t y n e ws FROM THE DESK OF MAYOR MARINO

PBG: Lush with Green Space & Recreational Opportunities By Mayor Maria Marino

What makes Palm Beach Gardens different from many other towns in our county is the dedication of land to green/preserve space. As mentioned in last month's article, nearly 50% of our city is green. With 16 parks in our city, it's no wonder families flock here to live. You can launch a boat at Sandhill Crane Park or zip-line at Joe Russo Park. You can also swim and take yoga and Zumba classes at the Burns Road Recreational Center; fish, canoe or kayak at Lake Catherine; and play pickle ball or go skateboarding at Plant Drive Park. Currently, we are working with the county to develop the district park on 80+ acres just off

Central Boulevard. This will increase the amount of multipurpose fields and walking trails Join tennis leagues at our awardwinning tennis facility, or enjoy a round of golf at the Sandhill Crane Golf Course (SCGC) where a new clubhouse is being built. While at SCGC, you can take lessons from golf professional Sherri Pla, recently featured on a CBS golf special for her passion for growing the game one junior golfer at a time. Our city has been home to many athletic tournaments for both youth and adults The Palm Beach Gardens Youth Athletic Association is growing rapidly, and the call for more multipurpose fields is being answered. At any time of the

year, you can watch out children play competition baseball, softball, soccer or lacrosse. As a professional golfer, I know how important it is for our youth to have such healthy options when it comes to free time. Long ago I chose sports as an outlet for my energy and if I hadn't, I would never have moved to Palm Beach Gardens. For more info on all of our parks and recreational facilities, visit www.pbgfl. com. There you will find everything you need to enjoy our thousands of acres of greenspace. Mmarino@pbgfl.com 

DEPRESSION. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, there are options. At Neurocore Brain Performance Centers, we know depression can feel insurmountable and medications might not be the right fit. That’s why we use neurofeedback – an effective, med-free treatment using 21st century science and technology to treat conditions at the core. b u s ine s s p ro fi le HOLLANDER REAL ESTATE

THE PERFECT FIT By Steve and Lauren Hollander

THE PERFECT FIT For many people in the Palm Beaches, it’s a term that describes the cherished lifestyle they have come to appreciate. Once you experience the cerulean blue water, the pristine white beaches and the verdant green fairways, it’s easy to see why this is one of the most sought-after communities in all of South Florida. For Steve and Lauren Hollander, however, “the perfect fit” is also synonymous with their relationship. As Lauren puts it, they found in each other “the parts needed to make each other more complete.” A POWERFUL CONNECTION Lauren was president and CEO of one of her family’s businesses, a successful restaurant equipment dealership. When her family decided to sell the company, Steve, then a national sales manager in the same industry, was recruited as the new president and CEO. Working closely together during the transition, Steve and Lauren realized just how much they had in common. Since then, the two have blended their families, left the restaurant equipment industry, and formed a wonderfully balanced professional real estate team – “another perfect fit” – enabling them to helping others with home buying and selling needs.

BETTER TOGETHER As in their personal relationship, Steve and Lauren blend their individual skills, experiences and personalities to achieve great results. A South Florida native, Lauren has the business savvy and intimate knowledge of the area that perfectly complements Steve’s strong organizational and negotiation skills. They tailor their services to meet client needs, and apply innovative marketing systems and ideas to help clients achieve the best possible results. Outside of work, Steve and Lauren, enjoy tennis (Lauren), golf (both), and simply making the most of life in the Palm Beaches. Both Lauren and Steve also serve as board members for a successful charter high school program. THE TEAM TO KNOW In life and business, Steve and Lauren Hollander are “the perfect fit” for each other. What’s more, they will work in harmony with you to achieve the perfect home buying or selling results in the Palm Beaches. Contact them today! ex p e r t c on t r i b u tor APPE ARAN C E IMPLANT D ENTAL

Periodontal Disease Treatment and Gum Disease Care Provided by Rebecca Longo

The word periodontal means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). Since plaque and calculus can destroy the gums and bone, periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. However, not only is periodontal disease the number one reason for tooth loss, but research also suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as contributing to increased risk during pregnancy. Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease. Below are some common signs and symptoms of periodontal disease: • Bleeding gums: Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss. • Loose teeth or altered spacing between teeth: This can result from bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone).

• • • •

Persistent bad breath Pus around the teeth and gums Red, puffy or receding gums Tenderness or Discomfort (This may result from buildup of plaque/caculus/bacteria.)

Your dentist and dental hygienist will evaluate for periodontal disease and recommend the appropriate treatment, which is dependent upon the type/severity of disease. In the early stages of gingivitis before damage has been done, improved daily oral hygiene and regular cleanings will be recommended. If the disease is more advanced, scaling and root planing will be recommended. In this deep cleaning procedure, tartar, plaque and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line and rough spots on root surfaces are smoothed. Medications, special medicated mouth rinses and an electric toothbrush may also be recommended. If pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery by a board certified periodontist may be required. If you have questions about dentistry/oral health, or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at 561.513.4401 or visit www.AppearanceImplants.com. 

JPE Welcomes Dr. Toni Yang By Carmen MH Colitz, DVM, PhD, DACVO

Dr. Toni Yang grew up in Houston, Texas. She completed both her undergraduate and professional studies at Texas A&M University (WHOOP!) in College Station, TX. After earning her DVM in 2015, she completed an internship in small animal surgery and medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine with plans to return to Texas thereafter. However, she developed a keen interest in integrative medicine and stayed on at UF for an additional year to complete a specialty internship with the integrative medicine service. Dr. Yang also trained in small animal veterinary acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Her special interests include post-operative

rehabilitation of orthopedic and neurologic conditions and small animal acupuncture, which can be of particular help when traditional interventions such as medicine/surgery are not an option. Dr. Yang shares her home with one cat (Sheldon) and one dog (Leonard). She enjoys reading, spending time outdoors (often in a hammock), and eating any/all foods. Although Dr. Yang will always consider herself a native Texan, she concedes that Florida is lovely and has somehow found a way to keep her around. No More Extra Fries By Pattie Light

When we at Koko FitClub told Heide Rizzo we were naming her Member of the Month and wanted this magazine to feature her, she resisted. It wasn’t the recognition she was shy about. She simply wanted to tell her own story. We would have told you about what a warm, caring and funny lady she is and how successful she has been with her fitness routine, but we’ll honor her by letting her tell at least a part of her story her way. Here goes: “Whenever people asked me what I did for exercise, I used to reply, ‘Extra Fries!’ I am a wife and mom of three (which is great), but my cardio used to be limited to vacuuming, and dusting was my strength training. What? A gym? For me? No way! But for some reason, I found myself walking into Koko FitClub on your opening day. And, well, here I am nine months later. I don’t have to think about my exercise these days. I can stop in for as little as 15 minutes and do cardio or stay for an hour and do a whole lot, including strength AND cardio.” At Koko, says Heide, she has not only increased her

strength by 50%, but she has dispensed with any/all excuses for not working out. After all, she has a member’s key that gives her gym access 24/7. But what really keeps her coming back, she says, is her “Koko family,” a staff of genuinely caring people who work hard to create a judgment free zone where she can attain her personal fitness goals with a philosophy of “effort in equals results out.” Being Member of the Month, she says, is awesome. Knowing that her fitness journey at Koko will be just as awesome even when she isn’t, is even more so. If you would like to meet other people of all ages who somehow just never have fit in at a “big box” gym, stop in to see us at Koko FitClub at Abacoa Plaza. Fitness is challenging, but you don’t have to go it alone. We will design a program specifically for your needs and stay by your side every step of the way to assure your success. We are here for YOU. 

Selling & Moving: Stress Less with the Right Team By JoAnn Munro, ASID

Moving to a new home? Remember this: Planning is your friend; disorganization is your enemy. Follow these friendly planning tips to minimize the stress of your next move: • Don’t wait to find the perfect home. Call your interior designer the minute you think about moving. Let him/her know whether you’re upsizing or downsizing and what furniture, art and accessories you love and are determined to place in the new home. • Start sorting the items you don’t love into two categories: maybe and donate. A move offers a great opportunity to declutter. • Hire an interior design professional to stage your home to emphasize the positive and downplay any negatives. Making your home look as spacious as possible and upping its “wow factor” can also up both the value and the ease of the sale! • Rent storage for must-keep items that others may not

find quite as appealing as you do. (To alleviate some of the craziness on moving day, have your home staging items delivered to your new place a week before your stored ones.) • As soon as you find the perfect place, ask the realtor, seller, or your interior designer to assist you in getting a scaled home plan; it will be helpful for any future renovations, and your interior designer can use it to provide virtual design services. • Precisely measure key walls to confirm plan measurements, and determine where electrical outlets are located. This will help your interior designer create a new home furniture plan that takes into account both placement of existing furniture and new items you might want to purchase. • Once you have your new home furniture plan, you can start shopping for those new rugs, art pieces, and accessories. The designer can not only assist with these purchase but also with placement on moving day or the day after. Selling, buying and moving can be stressful, but with the right planning, timing, team, and execution, your new life journey can be one of the best decisions you have ever made. JoAnn Munro, ASID, is your moving specialist and interior psychologist. Make your move less stressful in the end by hiring JoAnn in the beginning. Call 561.745.6919. 
