from the publisher Here I am again asking myself, “Where did the year go?” I’m trying to prepare for the holidays, but, as organized as I am, they always seem to come too quickly. And, as much as I love being involved with family and community, it doesn’t help that my October calendar is filling up fast.

David’s stepfather is turning 80, so we will be attending a family reunion in Orlando. As ambassadors, we’ll be participating in a number of events for the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I have been invited to a fundraising luncheon. As a community sponsor with the Town of Jupiter, David and I will have a booth at their Fall Fest. Next up is our nephew’s wedding in Virginia.

Whew! Oh, wait – Let’s not forget Halloween! It’s time to stock up on candy, and some neighborhoods go all out on by decorating their homes and having block parties. No matter how you plan on celebrating, I wish for you cooler weather, no rain, and a safe and fun-filled time for everyone involved! And once the jack-o-lantern goes dark, remember that many more hectic holidays are right around the corner. Be sure to take time for yourself and your family. And as always, thank you for taking the time to invite us into your home.

Magazines usually hit mailboxes the first week of the month. Dates may vary depending on the post office.

Celebrate the Season with Town of Jupiter’s

October Fall Fest By Kate Pokorny, Communications & Events Coordinator

Fall in South Florida is filled with family fun, cooler weather and pumpkins. To celebrate the arrival of the season, as well as the return of our seasonal residents, the Town of Jupiter will host its annual Fall Fest on October 7, 2017. The event has something for everyone. For all the little pumpkins, there will be a kids’ carnival featuring bounce houses, a hay ride, an activity map and face painting. For the adults, the event will showcase many local vendors selling all sorts of wares, from boutique clothing to hand-made crafts. Come hungry because there will be plenty of local food vendors and

an Octoberfest-style beer garden. As you relax with your food, you’ll enjoy live music by Whiskey Six, one of South Florida's favorite local country bands. While they mainly play modern country, don't be surprised to hear some Cash, Strait, Yoakam or other country classics thrown in. All you animal lovers out there will enjoy the Halloween costume show for dogs, spotlighting some of our cutest local adoptable pets. The Town of Jupiter’s Fall Fest is an event too good to miss! Mark your calendar for Sat., Oct. 7, and join us at The Plaza Down Under on the Riverwalk from noon to 5pm for a great time! 

Rosie Matthews

co ve r s t or y R O SIE MAT T H EWS

A Woman for All Two Seasons By Darla Parris Smallwood

“I only need two seasons: spring and summer,” says Rosie Matthews. That’s the short version of how she landed in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. But for those of you who like details, there’s a bit more to the story: Rosie is the daughter of a Spanish mother and an American father whose serendipitous meeting, surprising love story and ongoing 49-year marriage is a story in itself. Born in the United States, Rosie moved to southern Spain with her parents when she was just five months old. She grew up in the town of El Puerto de Santa Maria. In 1991 Rosie moved to the United States to attend Florida State University. After earning her degree in social science (with a minor in Spanish, in which she’s fluent), she moved to 8

Atlanta, Georgia, where, for a total of 11 years, she worked in technical writing/project management, payroll sales, and, finally, pharmaceutical sales. However, having grown up surrounded by Spain’s beautiful beaches, Rosie was never a big fan of Atlanta’s land-locked life. “And I wanted to be someplace that has year-round warm weather,” she explains. So in 2006, Rosie headed to South Florida. Other significant changes would accompany her geographical one. With the birth of her daughter Cristina (now 10), Rosie became a stay-at-home mom. Rosie’s son, Gavin, was born two years later. When Rosie began thinking of returning to work, she

was drawn to real estate. She’d long been interested in that career, but the idea of earning only commission was daunting. Now that she was a stay-at-home mom earning no wages at all, she felt freer to give real estate a try.

“I had nothing to lose. I tried it. I loved it. I still do,” says Rosie. A real estate agent with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Florida 1st, she says she has finally found her true calling. She has been in the business now since 2009. “I enjoy meeting new people and helping them find their next home – whether it’s their first, second, or last – and I Continued page 10

like that I’m still in sales without having to push a particular product. It’s as if I get to take people on a fun treasure hunt for the house they want and then use my bargain-hunting and negotiation skills to help them get it…I enjoy working with sellers too, but there’s something special about helping people find their perfect home,” Rosie explains. And speaking of perfect homes… Rosie seems to have found hers in Evergrene. She and her boyfriend Barry Heisler, a personal injury attorney, bought the house together two years ago. Rosie’s ex-husband also lives Evergrene, and Rosie’s move from Abacoa was partly precipitated by her desire for her children to be closer to their dad. As it turns out, the move has been great for the whole family. Her children have many neighborhood friends to play with, says Rosie, and, since the community is gated, they do so in a safe environment. “The parents here work together and watch out for each other’s children. Cristina and Gavin can ride their bikes and run around and play outside the way I did as a child.” Rosie has plenty of her own neighborhood friends. “I have met so many people in just two years. I enjoy hanging out at the pool and the clubhouse and socializing. There’s such a sense of community here.” When she isn’t working with clients or taking advantage of the many amenities afforded by life at Evergrene, you’ll likely find Rosie volunteering at her children’s school, Marsh Pointe Elementary (where she serves as both a fifth and third grade “room mom”) or at one of their sporting

events. Cristina plays volleyball and has joined her first travel team this season. Gavin, a former flag football player, is just starting soccer. Rosie also finds time to exercise every day, and likes attending concerts, frequenting outdoor restaurants, and traveling with her children. They take an annual trip to Spain, where Rosie’s parents still live, as well as a few “small U.S. trips,” including visits to Rosie’s sister in Atlanta. So what’s on Rosie’s busy agenda for this fall? With school back in full swing for Cristina and Gavin and the usual uptick in her work during this season, life will be all about her clients and her kids, says Rosie, sounding pretty happy and excited about both. As for the fact that the South Florida fall is more like springtime? Well, that just puts the icing on an alreadydelicious cake. ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? Does Your Home Qualify for Wind Storm Insurance Discounts?

Don’t be puzzled by the real estate market in the Palm Beaches

By Steve and Lauren Hollander

Insurance companies offer discounts based on a home’s level of wind resistance. A wind mitigation inspection by a licensed inspector is used to determine whether specific protective reinforcements are in place. The mitigation report usually pays for itself, with prices ranging from $70-125. The inspector evaluates the following construction features: Roof Age: If your roof was replaced on or after March of 2002, it most likely is eligible for the Florida Building Code of 2001 credit. This code requires contractors to use improved construction techniques, thus making roofs sounder. Roof Covering: The key factor in roof covering performance is the method of attachment of the roof covering to the roof deck. Roof Deck Material & Attachments: The performance of the roof deck is of critical importance in keeping hurricane losses to a minimum. Nail size, type, spacing, and penetration depth into the truss or rafters determines the uplift resistance of the deck. Roof-to-Wall: This is another critical connection that keeps the roof on the building and acts to transfer the uplift loads into the vertical walls. Due to the large negative pressures acting on the roof, this connection is KEY to the performance of the building. Secondary Water Resistance: Material applied to the roof covering to prevent water from intruding into the structure when the roof covering fails. Roof coverings often begin to peel off in peak wind gusts ranging from 70 to 100 mph. Roof Shape: Some roof slopes and configurations perform better than others. Moderate roof slopes tend NOT to uplift the roof and push the building sideways. Hip roofs provide greater stability during high winds regardless of which direction the wind blows. Opening Protection: Windows, doors, sliding glass doors, skylights, and garage doors are vulnerable to windborne debris impacts in hurricanes and other windstorms. An inspector looks for glazed (glass) openings with specific ratings and or shutters protecting them. Feel free to call us if you need additional information about obtaining a wind mitigation report for your home. (Information for this article was provided by Sihle Insurance Group.) 

b u s ine s s p ro fi le ANDREW GOLDBERG, GOVIC CAPITAL

Doing What’s Right to Safeguard Your Future By Darla Parris Smallwood, with Andrew Goldberg

Doing the right thing. It’s important to Andrew Goldberg – as a devoted father of three, and as a trusted financial advisor at Govic Capital. There’s nothing he’s more proud of, says Andrew, than his three daughters, ages 16, 14 and six. “Sometimes when you’re busy raising kids and working, you forget what fun is, but my little one reminds me every day.” Andrew spends as much time as possible with her, visiting local parks and beaches and simply enjoying activities. However, being in “good dad mode” isn’t all fun and games, especially when you have one child with special needs. So, as much as Andrew cherishes the more lighthearted moments, he tackles the daily responsibilities too, including making time to volunteer at his youngest daughter’s school. It comes as little surprise that in his work, Andrew takes a similar approach, relishing the interaction with his clients, while also working hard to address their individual situations and needs. With a law degree and two insurance designations (Licensed Long Term Care Professional, LTCP; and Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow, LUTCF), plus 18 years’ experience as a financial advisor, Andrew is well-versed in finding just the right investments and financial solutions for each client. “You may already have someone giving you financial advice,” Andrew says. “Maybe it’s a CPA or a tax

professional, or maybe just the guy in the cubicle next to you at work. I’ll give you a second opinion, and tell you what’s good about what you have – I’ll never recommend changing something if it’s already good – but I’ll also give you new ideas that might also be right for you. I have a reputation to uphold; I’m always going to do what’s right for you.” Because he is an independent advisor (as opposed to a captive one), he “wears no specific hat” when it comes to recommending what’s best. “I’m free to offer opportunities that many other advisors, brokers and planners may not even know exist,” Andrew explains. “With me, you get a comprehensive, ethical and honest approach. I’m not looking to ‘sell you’ – I’ll just help you see what the possibilities are.” He even welcomes clients to share his recommendations with their current “people,” says Andrew, because he knows they’ll agree that his advice is sound. “It’s rewarding to be there on those great days to see clients retire or pay for their kids’ college and know that I helped their financial planning pay off,” says Andrew. “But I believe it’s also my responsibility to ensure that their planning pays off on their worst day, so their lives won’t be ruined by circumstance, and they won’t become a burden to their families.” If you’re looking for an experienced, skilled advisor who offers a straightforward, comprehensive approach to preparing you for whatever lies ahead, email Andrew Goldberg at agoldberg@civog.com or call 561.324.3826. 

Preparing for "The Fall" By Jill Ball, VP of Operations

I know it’s hard to tell sometimes in South Florida, but the arrival of holiday décor in our local shops and supermarkets means we are officially in the fall season. Perhaps there’s no better time than now to touch on one of the biggest dangers to the senior population: the risk of fall-ing. That first fall to the ground may be abrupt and seemingly out of nowhere. “Mom had a little mishap yesterday,” I’ll hear people say. Or a usually independent, mobile gentlemen will proclaim, “It’s the darndest thing, I just lost my footing and tripped all of a sudden.” It’s actually no surprise when someone not prone to ambulation issues suddenly just loses his/her footing or balance. As we age, our mobility starts to decrease slowly. Although diseases like Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis can be an expedient to decreased independent ambulation, we typically do not notice gradual changes in ourselves or loved ones whom we see regularly. That being said, it is important for seniors and those caring for them to implement a system of checks and balances when it comes to mobility within the home and in

routine environment(s). Consider this checklist for preventing trips and topples: • Check home walkways and paths for rugs or narrow areas/ turns that may make it hard to navigate or create tripping hazards. • In doorways where a transition in flooring may occur, insure that there isn’t a “lip” or “bump” that may snag footing or be of hazard to someone with a shuffling gait. • On steps, use brightly colored tape or paint to mark the edge. • Always check any new medication to determine whether dizziness or loss of balance is a listed side effect. • Since the bathroom (especially at shower/bath time) is where an individual is most susceptible to falling, install handrails in the bathroom and shower/tub and a shower chair in the shower. • Replace pieces of furniture that have wheels or slide easily, like barstools, chairs and kitchen islands. • Use/Encourage the use of a cane or walker if you have/ your loved one has occasional or slight balance issues. Seniors may not always need assistance, but these adaptive tools are excellent preventative measures. • Wear/Encourage the wearing of appropriate footwear that provides good traction and support. • Have your/your loved one’s eyesight checked regularly. • Keep the living area as well-lit and clutter-free as possible. Regular attention to the aforementioned tips goes a long way towards keeping little tumbles and major spills at bay. For those who require more assistance, VIP America can refer a caregiver who is trained on proper transfer techniques and ambulation assistance. Choosing the Best Pool Pump By Peter C. Marcello Jr.

Here in Florida there are three general types of pool pumps from which you can choose. Here’s a brief overview of the pros and cons of each type: Single-Speed Pool Pumps • Highest operational costs • Lowest upfront costs • Operate at a single speed of 3450 RPM • Operate at a single horsepower ranging from ¾ HP to 3HP • Account for 75% of the pool pumps in the USA Dual-Speed Pool Pumps • Lower operational costs (contribute to significant cost savings) • Higher upfront costs than single-speed pumps • Operate at 2 speeds • Operate at 2 different HPs • Quiet at low speed • Difficult to fine tune flow rates • Additional controller or timer may be needed Variable-Speed Pool Pumps • Lowest operational costs

• Most expensive upfront costs • Operate at full range of speeds from 600 RPM – 3450 RPMs • Operate at full range of HPs • Extremely quiet • Easy to fine tune flow rates Here at Palms Pool, we suggest the Intelliflo Variable Speed Pump by Pentair. When Pentair first introduced the Intelliflo variable-speed technology, it set a new bar with energy efficiency, near-silent operation and long service life. Let’s break down those benefits even more specifically: • This modern marvel has an estimated cost of savings of up to $1500 each year, with energy savings up to 90% versus your traditional pumps. (Energy Star certified the Intelliflo Variable Speed Pump from Pentair because it met strict energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.) • Not only do these pumps reduce energy use and protect the environment, they operate as low as 45 decibels, which is quieter then a dishwasher or even moderate rainfall. • A variable speed pool pump utilizes what is known as a permanent magnet motor, which is what hybrid cars use. This allows the user to dial in the exact flow rate they need for their pool. • Exclusive software and digital controls make programming a cinch, allowing you to customize your programming to optimum pump speeds for specific tasks such as filtering, heating and cleaning, as well as for spa jets, and waterfalls. When you buy multiple Pentair items through Palms Pool, you get a 3-year extended warranty on all the products, including the Intelliflo. What’s more, you can forget the stress of researching, buying tools and installing the pool pump yourself because Palms Pools offers expert installation services on all Pentair equipment! Rocket Science for Your Home By Darla Parris Smallwood, with David Langley, CEO

If only beauty could last… Professional artist David Langley was bent on finding a way to make it happen. An experienced painter and sculptor who has created large projects for Disney and the cities of Delray Beach, Orlando, Port St. Lucie and Sarasota, David is also a “semi-inventor” with considerable background in biology and chemistry. Initially in search of a coating to prevent the degradation of his artwork, he ended up discovering one that could do the same for practically any surface. “I learned about this coating first developed by NASA, and I thought, ‘NASA has the best stuff. What if this product could be used outside the aerospace industry?’ About three years ago, I started testing the coating on everything: my house, my car, wood, marble, boats… It was exciting to think about offering something so effective to which the public had never before had access.” David’s research revealed the coating’s amazing benefits when used on a myriad of materials and under diverse conditions. As a result, in 2015, he created GLASS-ON Solutions, offering more than 2,000 individual formulas for specific media and extreme environments. With the invaluable assistance of company COO Karen Stern, a detailoriented sculptor and ceramist with an extensive background in business management, David and the GLASS-ON Solutions team find the perfect way to revitalize and improve every customer’s property. Since the research and evolution of the product are ongoing, if the company doesn’t already have the perfect

formula for your needs, they will create it. Below are just a few of the practical applications, offering permanent protection for various elements of your home: • • • •

Stone and composite countertops, stone, tile, cement flooring, furniture (metal, lacquer, wood) Stainless and brass sinks and fixtures, showers Textiles: rugs or cloth wallpaper, leather, upholstery, vinyl Exterior pavers, concrete, pool decks, patios, stone

The possibilities for protecting, beautifying and preserving your home with GLASS-ON Solutions’ products are endless, increasing your return on investment (ROI) while decreasing or even eliminating maintenance cost for labor and cleaning products. And while financial and aesthetic benefits are important, peace of mind is priceless. No more worries about stains on your leather, rugs, marble and wood; or about metals rusting or painted surfaces fading. Likewise, with GLASS-ON Solutions’ products on the job, there’s no more need to fret about potential slips and falls on wet flooring, or infestation and colonization of bacteria, viruses and molds that can make your family sick. “It’s not magic,” says David. “It’s rocket science for your home!” The highly trained application specialists at GLASS-ON Solutions will listen to your specific needs and bring the vision for your home to reality. Visit glass-onsolutions.com or call 772.834.5414 today. It’s time to make GLASS-ON your every SOLUTION! 

Six Tips for Planning a Successful Event By James M. Gelfand, General Manager, PGA National Members Club

Creating a successful event can be nervewracking. Following these six helpful tips and the process will go more smoothly and more successfully than you could ever imagine. 1. Create a checklist to provide a step-by-step guide to organizing and executing a special event. 2. Establish a budget which includes expenses such as printing, entertainment, speakers, food, and any venue rental fees. Be sure to allow for unexpected expenses. 3. Schedule facilities, and remember to consider room capacity, whether you’re having an in/outdoor event and how many tables and chairs will be necessary for guests. 4. Have plenty of food and drinks. Decide whether you will serve lunch,

dinner, or reception food, and be sure you have proper head counts to accommodate all your guests. 5. Publicity/marketing are keys to a successful event. Determine who you want to attend and then target your advertising accordingly. Consider supplementing paid advertising with inexpensive fliers, handouts, email messages, and word-of-mouth. 6. Book a speaker/entertainer. Make sure the entertainment or speaker is aligned with the theme and the talent is someone who will keep the audience engaged. Consider cost as well. Regardless of the type of event you’re planning, make sure it’s meaningful and celebrates your company in a uniquely positive way. The PGA National Members Club can accommodate up to 150 guests while affording one of the best views in all of Palm Beach Gardens. The venue overlooks sweeping vistas, lakes with

fountains, and the famed Champion Golf Course, home of the PGA TOUR Honda Classic. Choose from a variety of packages ranging from traditional buffets to casual cocktail mixers. Book by October 1, 2017, with a minimum of 20 guests, to receive an early booking bonus, including your choice of complimentary chef’s selection of three passed hors d’oeuvres, or complimentary chocolate fountain dessert station, or complimentary chef’s selection of three passed desserts. Plus one lucky event host wins a Summer Social Preview Membership from our random drawing! To learn more about why the Members Club at PGA National is a great place to host your special occasion and allow us to walk you through all the steps of planning a successful event, contact Kristen Balfour, Members Club Catering Manager, by calling 561.227.2693 or email kristen.balfour@pgaresort.com. ■

KOKO FitClub Partners with AHA; Promotes Women’s Cardiovascular Health By Tim Stergiou-Allen

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 was the first day of the rest of their lives for 10 lucky women selected to participate in the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® BetterU program. The BetterU program challenges women to transform their overall heart health by embracing a lifestyle change, and to inspire the community to do the same. Koko FitClub of Abacoa Plaza in Jupiter teamed up with the AHA to provide the tools, resources, and education necessary to help make it all happen. “Being an active supporter of the Go Red for Women™ campaign for the American Heart Association is a true pleasure for me,” said Pattie Light, owner of Koko FitClub, speaking at the August launch event. “I am particularly passionate about the BetterU Challenge and the opportunity to work with the amazing women who have chosen to change their lifestyles for a healthier self. Because women are caregivers to so many and in such critical ways, it’s important that we are never, ever at the bottom of the list,” she added.

Debra Larsson, who took part in the previous year’s challenge, also spoke at the event, offering support for this year’s participants: “My husband is why I got involved with BetterU and Go Red For Women. As a stroke survivor, he has taught me to take an active role in my own well-being and to lead a healthier life, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Everyone has their own reason why they want to do this challenge and it’s amazing these ten women have taken this challenge to showcase their efforts and to lead by example in the local community.” Focusing on lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, knowing your family history, being an advocate for your own health and scheduling regular wellwoman visits, losing weight and eating healthier are some of the many important ways to reduce one’s risk of developing heart disease. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, yet 80% of all cardiovascular events may be prevented. The Go Red For Women™ movement empowers women to take charge of their heart health; the BetterU campaign gives women the tools to make the positive change to help them be among that 80%. About the American Heart Association The American Heart Association is devoted to saving people from heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. They team with millions of volunteers to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. The Dallas-based association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. To learn more or to get involved, call 1.800.AHA.USA1, visit www.heart.org or call any of their offices around the country. 

Core Training and Soda Cans By Shawn Taker

More and more frequently, clients come into our office and blame their back pain on a lack of core strength. While traditional core training certainly can and does help, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. One way I like to give people a visual is to have them think of a soda can. The same way a functional person’s shoulders and hips are square with one another, the bottom and top of the can are parallel with each other. Both the functional person and an intact can are capable of holding a significant amount of weight. If the can were dented, so that the bottom and top were no longer parallel, the can would crumble under a fraction of the load. The same holds true for the body. If the shoulders and hips are not square with each other, the spine doesn’t have a chance. Following the traditional core training logic, the solution

would be to focus on strengthening the abdominal and lower back muscles. In the soda can analogy, that’s the equivalent of wrapping a few more layers of aluminum around the can. However, it will take a lot of aluminum to make the can as strong as it would be if you just popped the dent out and restored the can to a functional position. The same holds true for the body. If the shoulders and hips are not square and parallel to each other, then the spine and core are compromised. The fastest way to strengthen the body is to restore the balance between the shoulders and the hips. As my mentor Pete Egoscue would say, “Straighten and then strengthen.” The true core of the body is the entire torso and all the muscles that attach to the pelvis, spine, ribs, and shoulder blades. Get real benefits like moving easier and being able to take a deeper breath by addressing all the right muscles. For more information, call 561.202.6741 or visit www. egoscue.com. 

co mm u n i t y n e ws PBG POLICE FOUNDATION

National Night Out Provided by PBG Police Foundation

The Palm Beach Gardens Police Foundation, in partnership with the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, is proud to announce sponsorship of National Night Out – America’s Night Out Against Crime. From 6pm until 9pm on Friday, Oct. 6, the Palm Beach Gardens Municipal Complex will come alive with food, music, exhibitions and demonstrations of police K9’s, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and a hands-on Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) experience (with prizes). The event will include exhibits from a number of organizations, including the following: • • • • • •

Trauma Hawk from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue* Palm Beach Gardens Fire Department Florida Highway Patrol U.S. Marshals Service Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

*The Trauma Hawk Air Ambulance will land at the event site and be available for inspection by those in attendance. The event is FREE. Bring the whole family, but please do leave pets at home. Pets are not allowed in city parks. Enjoy face-painting for children, funnel cakes, cotton

candy, popcorn, a food truck, and even a golf demonstration area provided by folks at The Honda Classic. This year’s new Touch-A-Truck area features lots of big heavy equipment from FPL, Solid Waste Authority, and PBG Public Works. And, of course, fire trucks and SWAT vehicles will be on hand too! The event will also feature live animals from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary! The overall objective of the event is to “give crime a going-away party” and send the message that Palm Beach Gardens is dedicated to building a stronger, safer city. National Night Out is part of a larger community-wide outreach program sponsored by the Police Foundation to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs and strengthen the police-community partnership. The Police Foundation recognizes the importance of strong neighborhoods to a city, as well as the effectiveness of addressing safety issues at the neighborhood level. Events like this one reinforce the relationship between the police and the community and build upon the hand-in-hand partnership so vital to lowering crime rates. Questions about National Night Out should be directed to Sergeant Geoff Soule of the Community Involvement Unit. He can be reached at 561.578.2750 or at gsoule@pbgfl.com. 

co mm u n i t y n e ws RESIDENTS WANTED

Residents Wanted Everybody has a story, and sometimes the most interesting ones come from people who don’t think they have much to tell. From work and community involvement, to hobbies, travel and other interests, the self-perceived “ordinary” things that make you distinctively you, are often, in others’ eyes, quite extraordinary. Our magazine enjoys helping bring neighbors together and fostering a closerknit community by featuring residents of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. No one has to have rescued puppies from a burning building or bungeejumped off the Empire State Building to be featured (though if you have, we definitely

need to get you on an upcoming cover). We believe in the simple power of connections, of people getting to each other one resident or family at time. Help us tell the stories of those who make this community a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Volunteer to share your story, or nominate another resident or family to be highlighted. Whether it’s the proverbial new kid on the block or the long-timer who’s watched the community grow from the ground up, the neighbor who started the book or bridge club, or the mastermind behind that new beer tasting or belly dancing group – a wealth of stories beg to be told! Send self-nominations or nominations, complete with the following information, to dsmallwood@bestversionmedia. com. • Nominee’s name • Nominee’s phone and/or email contact • Nominee’s neighborhood of residence • BRIEF summary of reason behind nomination • If nominating someone else, whether you’ve already spoken with him/her about the nomination (It helps if you do so.) 

lives. Incorporated in 1958, The Arc has ever since been providing remarkable services, continuing education, rights advocacy, loving care and family support. Today, our programs offer a continuum of care for a lifetime. Services can begin as early as during pregnancy to minimize or prevent developmental delays. Options are available to address a variety of needs for infants, children, teens, adults and families. The Arc of Palm Beach County’s work touches all corners of the community. Every year, we serve more than 2,800 families. Our meaningful programs help us change lives every day. Below are some highlights of what the Arc accomplishes each year: • The Arc’s Career Transition program prepares individuals with developmental disabilities. (Many are already employed part-time.) • The Arc provides an employment specialist for participants working in the community. • The Arc partners with local companies to employ Arc clients part-time through the Enclave Employment program. • The Arc operates four group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities. The homes are located throughout Palm Beach County, housing residents with varying abilities, and ranging in age from 22 to 82. • The Arc’s day camp for children ages 5-17 provides great social opportunities during winter, spring and summer breaks from school. More than 100 campers have participated. • The Arc’s Respite Care program employs trained professional caregivers who provide short-term care to children with developmental disabilities, giving parents or guardians personal time to attend to their own medical appointments and errands – or to simply rest. During most years, more than 180 families are served as the program provides more than 24,800 hours of care to community families. • The Arc’s Healthy Steps for Young Children program, a part of their early intervention services, serves more than 800 children during most years. More than 3,000 developmental/family risk screens are completed, and the program’s developmental specialists provide services at more than 1600 well-child visits. 
