I hope everyone enjoyed your summer. For me, fall means hello to football season and goodbye to a summer spent as a baseball widow (since I lack any and all enthusiasm for my husband’s beloved Red Sox.) A University of Miami grad, I can now turn my attention to rooting for the ‘Canes. Of course, since my son is a Florida State graduate, I try to support the Seminoles too. At any rate, I look forward to the fun family rivalry. What are you looking forward to this fall? If there’s something you’d like to see included in an upcoming issue, we’ll do our best to incorporate your suggestion, and if you’re involved in a local not-forprofit or charity, we’d be happy to promote that organization’s event or simply help bring awareness to the cause. Even as you and your family trade the lazy days of summer for the hectic pace of school functions, fundraisers, charity events, seasonal visitors etc., remember to take time for yourself. Grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, put your feet up and spend a few minutes enjoying YOUR neighborhood magazine!

Fall Classes for All Ages at MJT’s Conservatory MJT’s Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts offers year-round learning opportunities for students of all ages (kindergarten through adult), including a fall semester of fun-filled classes taught by Broadway-caliber theatre professionals. Classes include all levels of dance (ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop), voice, acting, playwriting and musical theatre. Conservatory students perform on the MJT stage and work alongside professionals both onstage and off, learning first-hand from nationally known directors and Broadway performers, agents and local instructors. The conservatory boasts world-class classroom facilities, including state-ofthe-art dance, acting and voice studios. New programs this fall include a

college audition prep program for high school students and two audition prep workshops for students preparing to enter Bak Middle School of the Arts. Other new classes include Improv for the Classroom (for middle and high school students), as well as a monologue workshop and master classes with well-known NYC industry professionals. Goldner Conservatory’s premiere Professional Training Program has started its second class this fall. The only two-year professional training program in Florida affiliated with a professional regional theatre, this program affords students the chance to train 35 hours per week with Broadway and South Florida professionals for all aspects of performing.

MJT’s “In the Style Of” series offers conservatory students the chance to be selected (via lottery) for free, unique dance workshops with cast members for the upcoming 2016/17 musicals Disney Newsies, Hairspray and South Pacific. Students enrolled in Goldner Conservatory’s signature Musical Theatre Production classes during fall semester will perform in The Best of Broadway Revue on the MJT stage in December. Enrollment fees are allinclusive, covering all costumes and performance-related costs. Fall classes have begun and online registration is open. Scholarships are available. co mm u n i t y n e ws FROM THE DESK OF MAYOR MARINO

PBG: Lush with Green Space & Recreational Opportunities By Mayor Maria Marino

What makes Palm Beach Gardens different from many other towns in our county is the dedication of land to green/preserve space. As mentioned in last month's article, nearly 50% of our city is green. With 16 parks in our city, it's no wonder families flock here to live. You can launch a boat at Sandhill Crane Park or zip-line at Joe Russo Park. You can also swim and take yoga and Zumba classes at the Burns Road Recreational Center; fish, canoe or kayak at Lake Catherine; and play pickle ball or go skateboarding at Plant Drive Park. Currently, we are working with the county to develop the district park on 80+ acres just off

Central Boulevard. This will increase the amount of multipurpose fields and walking trails Join tennis leagues at our awardwinning tennis facility, or enjoy a round of golf at the Sandhill Crane Golf Course (SCGC) where a new clubhouse is being built. While at SCGC, you can take lessons from golf professional Sherri Pla, recently featured on a CBS golf special for her passion for growing the game one junior golfer at a time. Our city has been home to many athletic tournaments for both youth and adults The Palm Beach Gardens Youth Athletic Association is growing rapidly, and the call for more multipurpose fields is being answered. At any time of the

year, you can watch out children play competition baseball, softball, soccer or lacrosse. As a professional golfer, I know how important it is for our youth to have such healthy options when it comes to free time. Long ago I chose sports as an outlet for my energy and if I hadn't, I would never have moved to Palm Beach Gardens. For more info on all of our parks and recreational facilities, visit www.pbgfl. com. There you will find everything you need to enjoy our thousands of acres of greenspace. Mmarino@pbgfl.com 

co ver st o r y THE FL EMING FA M ILY

Team Fleming By Darla Parris Smallwood

Believe it or not, a Gator fan and a Seminole fan can co-exist. Just ask Chase and Aubrey Fleming. The two Palm Beach County natives, who met in pre-school and graduated from The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach, have been together for seven years now. They celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary last April. Although Chase attended Elon University in North Carolina, many of his relatives matriculated at the University of Florida, and he honors the family tradition of rooting for the Gators. Aubrey, a Florida State grad, will have none of that, throwing her enthusiastic support behind her beloved Seminoles. “College football season can get pretty fun at our house,” Aubrey says. Of late, that “fun” has included the couple’s arguing over what outfit their two-year-old daughter Saylor will wear for the big face-off between UF and FSU. This year isn’t looking favorable for Aubrey. “Before we were even married, Chase went to a game through the Gator Club and came back with both a toddler cheerleading outfit and a tiny Gator tee shirt. Both are in Saylor’s closet right 8

now, and she’ll finally be big enough to wear them this year.” Then there’s also the matter of the vintage Gator sweater that Chase’s dad wore as a baby. “There’s a pretty funny photo from my baby shower of me sticking out my tongue when my mother-in-law gave me that gift!” Aubrey laughs. Fortunately, although Aubrey and Chase have dissimilar taste in college sports teams, they do share the same religious views and core values, something that Aubrey says forms “a great foundation” for their marriage. Chase directs business development for Republic Construction in Delray Beach. Aubrey works as the director of marketing for Dry Pro Water Fire Mold, Inc. in Tequesta. She is also involved with the company’s business development, PR, and branding. Both Chase and Aubrey especially enjoy the relationship-building components of their work. “Chase has been in construction most of his life. He’s really outgoing and loves his job and helping people. For me, especially since I was a stay-at-home mom until a few months ago, it’s particularly rewarding to get out and meet people. I love building those personal relationships that are so important to helping people through difficult transitions.” The Flemings also share a commitment to giving back to Continued page 10

their community. Both have long been involved in SunFest, with Aubrey serving as merchandise committee chair for seven years. The two volunteered with the now defunct Hospice Horizons Fishing Tournament for several years, and are currently involved with the Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade. All of this is not to say, however, that Aubrey and Chase instantly knew they belonged together. “We ran in the same circles in school, but we didn’t really know each other well. In high school, he had a little crush on me, but he was two years younger, so, of course, I wouldn’t give him the time of day,” Aubrey explains. However, when they ran into each other years later at a local restaurant, Chase and Aubrey reconnected. They became friends first, then began dating. “We took it slowly, but we had so much fun together. Even early on, I thought ‘I’ll bet I’m going to end up with this guy. And then I did!’” Aubrey says. Now Chase, Aubrey, Saylor, and their 12-yearold Brussels Griffon named Rocco all live happily in Palm Beach Gardens. “My father’s father and his brothers were some of the earliest residents in the Holly Drive/Riverside Drive area of Palm Beach Gardens and even got to name a few streets there. My parents still live there to this day. We live within a five-mile radius of everything: parks, the recreation center, the mall with all its kid-friendly events for Saylor… We are blessed to be here, to watch our daughter grow up here in such a safe, friendly place. This is where we were meant to be.  ————————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? p et c o r n e r S P ON SORED BY J U P ITER PET EMER GENCY

JPE Welcomes Dr. Toni Yang By Carmen MH Colitz, DVM, PhD, DACVO

Dr. Toni Yang grew up in Houston, Texas. She completed both her undergraduate and professional studies at Texas A&M University (WHOOP!) in College Station, TX. After earning her DVM in 2015, she completed an internship in small animal surgery and medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine with plans to return to Texas thereafter. However, she developed a keen interest in integrative medicine and stayed on at UF for an additional year to complete a specialty internship with the integrative medicine service. Dr. Yang also trained in small animal veterinary acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Her special interests include post-operative

rehabilitation of orthopedic and neurologic conditions and small animal acupuncture, which can be of particular help when traditional interventions such as medicine/surgery are not an option. Dr. Yang shares her home with one cat (Sheldon) and one dog (Leonard). She enjoys reading, spending time outdoors (often in a hammock), and eating any/all foods. Although Dr. Yang will always consider herself a native Texan, she concedes that Florida is lovely and has somehow found a way to keep her around. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook for announcements about our new facility, located at 505 Commerce Way, Jupiter, FL 33458. Also, visit us at jupiterpet.com or call 561.741.4041 for more information. 

b u s ine s s p ro fi le GLASS-ON SOLUTIONS, INC.

Rocket Science for Your Home By Darla Parris Smallwood, with David Langley, CEO

If only beauty could last… Professional artist David Langley was bent on finding a way to make it happen. An experienced painter and sculptor who has created large projects for Disney and the cities of Delray Beach, Orlando, Port St. Lucie and Sarasota, David is also a “semi-inventor” with considerable background in biology and chemistry. Initially in search of a coating to prevent the degradation of his artwork, he ended up discovering one that could do the same for practically any surface. “I learned about this coating first developed by NASA, and I thought, ‘NASA has the best stuff. What if this product could be used outside the aerospace industry?’ About three years ago, I started testing the coating on everything: my house, my car, wood, marble, boats… It was exciting to think about offering something so effective to which the public had never before had access.” David’s research revealed the coating’s amazing benefits when used on a myriad of materials and under diverse conditions. As a result, in 2015, he created GLASS-ON Solutions, offering more than 2,000 individual formulas for specific media and extreme environments. With the invaluable assistance of company COO Karen Stern, a detailoriented sculptor and ceramist with an extensive background in business management, David and the GLASS-ON Solutions team find the perfect way to revitalize and improve every customer’s property. Since the research and evolution of the product are ongoing, if the company doesn’t already have the perfect

formula for your needs, they will create it. Below are just a few of the practical applications, offering permanent protection for various elements of your home: • • • •

Stone and composite countertops, stone, tile, cement flooring, furniture (metal, lacquer, wood) Stainless and brass sinks and fixtures, showers Textiles: rugs or cloth wallpaper, leather, upholstery, vinyl Exterior pavers, concrete, pool decks, patios, stone

The possibilities for protecting, beautifying and preserving your home with GLASS-ON Solutions’ products are endless, increasing your return on investment (ROI) while decreasing or even eliminating maintenance cost for labor and cleaning products. b u s ine s s p ro fi le LYNN STUDIOS, INC.

Capturing Life By Lynn Hernandez

From the first time I picked up a camera as a teenager in 1994, it has been my great joy to capture relationships and special moments through photography. In 2002, while on a shoot photographing family members interacting with each other, I realized I wanted to be a photographer for the rest of my life. I’m lucky. Over the years, I’ve taken countless other photographs that have made me feel exactly the way I felt the day that family’s photos were taken. I’m committed to giving my clients that same great feeling when they look at their own photos. Before I moved to West Palm Beach three years ago, I lived in Miami, where I often photographed elaborate weddings of the eight-ten-hour variety. That wasn’t for me. Since relocating, I’ve gotten back to who I am: a photographer whose passion lies in capturing the truly meaningful moments that define the love shared by couples, and by entire families. These days, I’m a portrait and wedding photographer who specializes photographing vacationing families and couples celebrating intimate destination weddings. I capture the priceless moments as families enjoy a great getaway, and as couples pledge their love to each other on beaches, at resorts, and in courthouses and gardens. I work hard to ensure that your special West Palm Beach visit lasts a lifetime by capturing on film the love and

connection you have with each other. Whether you are all about taking quiet walks on the beach with the love of your life or giving laughter-filled piggyback rides to your kids, your personality will shine during my carefully and individually crafted photo-shoots for you and your loved ones. As a mom of kids that range from 5 to 22, I understand the importance of preserving the fleeting moments of life. My children inspire me to follow my passion and true purpose as a photographer. I bring dynamic energy, professional guidance, and individual attention to every photo shoot. My promise to you is that I’ll create an enjoyable experience for you and your family, and deliver portraits that will make you feel the love and remember the fun every time you look at them. Recently the publishers of The Wedding and Honeymoon Guide for Discover the Palm Beaches Florida (where I am a partner) wrote an article* about my experiences as a wedding photographer. They also selected seven of my photographs** for the guide. The 5000 distributed copies of the guide give me a unique opportunity to connect with even more people who love each other, some of whom I hope will trust me to tell their story. I couldn’t be more honored to be featured, representing West Palm Beach, a city that I have grown to love deeply. *Read the article at https://issuu.com/passportpublications/docs/ discover_wedding_honeymoon_guide. **Two are on p. 8 of Experience Weddings in Florida; two are on p. 14 of Wedding Essentials; three appear with the aforementioned article.

Posture? Why Should I Care? By Shawn Taker

You’ve heard it all before: “Sit up straight.” “Shoulders back.” “Don’t slouch.” And honestly, we do look so much better when we follow this advice. But good posture is about far more than simply looking good. It’s about feeling good and being in good health. As a society, our posture is getting increasingly worse as we spend more and more time hunching over our smartphones, tablets and laptops. If you take the time to watch people, you can’t help noticing how many of them stand and move with shoulders slumped forward, feet turned out, or in other positions that just don’t “look right.” Far beyond the aesthetics, their bodies probably don’t “function right” either. When posture is bad, joints are

more susceptible to injury, arthritis and any number of degenerative conditions. In fact, nearly every system in the body can be compromised due to bad posture. Consider the following problems that can result from poor posture: • Frequent shortness of breath because the respiratory system is compromised. • Swelling of the feet and ankles because the lymphatic system isn’t working efficiently. • Vascular issues because the circulatory system is restricted. • Constipation/irregular bowel movements because the digestive system is on the fritz. The list goes on and on. The point is, if you are having trouble with any of your body systems and doctors are running out of remedies (besides

chalking up your problems to “old age” and/or prescribing diuretics and other medications), you may want to take a long look at the role your posture is playing in your situation. Straightening out your posture isn’t all that difficult, and you don’t have to walk around every day with a book on your head. Some simple movements, the ones that are right for you, will make a huge difference in how your body functions and how you feel. If you’d like to know more about how to take control of your health and address imbalances that may be underlying some of your health issues, give us a call 561.202.6741 or visit www.egoscue.com/palm-beachgardens-fl. We would be happy to point you toward a solution that works best for you. 

Osteoarthritis: Surgery vs. Regenerative Medicine By Ricardo Leano, MD, MBA, DABA, FACHE

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects 30 million Americans and is the most common chronic condition of the synovial joints. OA can affect any joint, but occurs most often in the knees, hips and lower back. Cartilage covers and cushions the ends of bones involved in the joints. OA is characterized by focal areas of cartilage loss, causing inflammation, pain and joint stiffness. If cartilage wears away, bone rubs against bone, leading to joint damage and more pain. The most common symptoms of OA are pain and stiffness, difficulty initiating movement after rest; limitation of movement, tenderness of the joint and palpable bony swelling around it, and inflammation. Aging, being overweight, injury, and certain activities predispose one to the development of OA. The pain, reduced flexibility, side effects from medications, consequences from surgery and other factors associated with OA can lead to adverse health, labor and social costs. Traditional treatments include education, physical therapy, assistive devices, injections and surgery. Total joint replacement carries the risk of infections, lengthy and painful rehabilitation, and prolonged absence from work. While cartilage lacks its own blood supply, the cells that promote healing can be taken from your own blood. Once those cells are processed and injected back into your damaged joint, they can regenerate (regrow) cartilage. This simple procedure can help you avoid, or at least postpone for some years, a major surgery that replaces your joint with titanium. The most novel approach to treat OA is Regenerative Medicine (Reg-Med). Reg-Med comprises the intra-articular

injection of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), stem cells from bone marrow, mesenchymal cells from fat, or stem cells from amniotic fluid or umbilical cord blood. PRP can be combined with any of the other modalities. When the healing elements are deposited directly next to the cartilage, they allow that tissue to regrow. The treatment is performed in a few minutes, and the patient may return to work in a couple of days. Painful and lengthy rehabilitation is not necessary. Results are noticeable in a few weeks and the procedure may be repeated every few years. The cost of this procedure is, in most of the cases, much less than the co-payments involved in a major surgery. If you or your loved ones suffer from OA, and a total joint replacement has been recommended, visit Palm Beach Pain for a free consultation with Dr. Leano before surgery. Call 561.248.1166 to schedule your appointment. 

5 Tips for Introducing Home Care By Jill Ball, VP of Operations

One of the most rewarding and sometimes challenging aspects of my position here at VIP America is meeting with a family or potential client to complete a new client assessment. Sometimes the transition into home care is quite smooth, with all involved parties (potential client, spouse, family, health professionals, friends etc.) on the same page. At other times I find myself meeting with someone who has just become aware that he/she may receive home care, or even with someone who arrives in my office still unclear as to why he/she is there. In such cases, the transition to home care does not always go quite so smoothly. Here are 5 tips for introducing the idea of home health care to a loved one: 1. Stay calm, cool, and collected while discussing home care. If you’re frazzled, your loved one will be too. Be positive. This does not need to be a bad change or a negative experience. 2. Gather information and explore your options. There is no “one size fits all” home health care plan. Each client we service has a care plan as unique as his/her needs. We specialize in a wide variety of diagnoses (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, disabled adults, diabetic patients, cognitive impairments, multiple sclerosis, etc.). Call our intake nurse to discuss what type of schedule and level of care would work for your loved one. Some clients only need occasional homemaker/companion services while others may need daily assistance with their personal care.

3. Allow your loved one to express emotions. While you’ve had time to process the potential change, this may be the first time the situation has even crossed your loved one’s mind. Feeling a wide range of emotions is normal, especially for someone suffering from a neurological disease such as Alzheimer’s, dementia or Parkinson’s. For these people, so much is changing in their lives that they are prone to be much more fearful and emotional than they would typically be. 4. Don’t argue. If your loved one is not responding positively, simply walk away and try to approach the subject again at a later time. Don’t make matters worse by arguing, and refrain from phrases like “We have no other choice” and “This is what we have to do now.” Avoid threats such as “If you want to stay at home…” or “If you don’t do this, then I won’t be able to help you anymore.” 5. Remind your loved one that the goal is assistance, not control. The common misconception is that home care is about taking over the individual’s daily care. This could not be further from the truth. We are not task masters that come in and introduce new routines or methods to control how a person conducts daily life. Our caregivers are there to help clients stay in their own homes, where they see familiar faces and enjoy comfortable surroundings for as long as possible. VIP America, LLC has been referring quality caregivers to the southeast and southwest coasts of Florida since 1997. We offer complimentary, in-home assessments to discuss and explore all your home care options. Call us today at 561.585.4535 to see how we can help you and/or your loved one. 
