from the publisher Here I am again asking myself, “Where did the year go?” I’m trying to prepare for the holidays, but, as organized as I am, they always seem to come too quickly. And, as much as I love being involved with family and community, it doesn’t help that my October calendar is filling up fast.

David’s stepfather is turning 80, so we will be attending a family reunion in Orlando. As ambassadors, we’ll be participating in a number of events for the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I have been invited to a fundraising luncheon. As a community sponsor with the Town of Jupiter, David and I will have a booth at their Fall Fest. Next up is our nephew’s wedding in Virginia.

Whew! Oh, wait – Let’s not forget Halloween! It’s time to stock up on candy, and some neighborhoods go all out on by decorating their homes and having block parties. No matter how you plan on celebrating, I wish for you cooler weather, no rain, and a safe and fun-filled time for everyone involved! And once the jack-o-lantern goes dark, remember that many more hectic holidays are right around the corner. Be sure to take time for yourself and your family. And as always, thank you for taking the time to invite us into your home.

Magazines usually hit mailboxes the first week of the month. Dates may vary depending on the post office.

Celebrate the Season with Town of Jupiter’s

October Fall Fest By Kate Pokorny, Communications & Events Coordinator

Fall in South Florida is filled with family fun, cooler weather and pumpkins. To celebrate the arrival of the season, as well as the return of our seasonal residents, the Town of Jupiter will host its annual Fall Fest on October 7, 2017. The event has something for everyone. For all the little pumpkins, there will be a kids’ carnival featuring bounce houses, a hay ride, an activity map and face painting. For the adults, the event will showcase many local vendors selling all sorts of wares, from boutique clothing to hand-made crafts. Come hungry because there will be plenty of local food vendors and

an Octoberfest-style beer garden. As you relax with your food, you’ll enjoy live music by Whiskey Six, one of South Florida's favorite local country bands. While they mainly play modern country, don't be surprised to hear some Cash, Strait, Yoakam or other country classics thrown in. All you animal lovers out there will enjoy the Halloween costume show for dogs, spotlighting some of our cutest local adoptable pets. The Town of Jupiter’s Fall Fest is an event too good to miss! Mark your calendar for Sat., Oct. 7, and join us at The Plaza Down Under on the Riverwalk from noon to 5pm for a great time! 

Sue Naversen

Embracing What’s Next By Darla Parris Smallwood

Sports was never Susan (Sue) Naversen’s “thing” when she was growing up, but she knows how to handle curveballs. If you swing and miss, you simply step back up to the plate and give it another go. “I like to think of myself as a woman of many seasons. As someone who is always progressing in life toward the next interest that I have. Usually my interests have something to do with helping others,” says Sue. And when her interests don’t land her exactly where she thought they would, Sue eagerly anticipates where life will take her next. These days, Sue, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (DOM), helps others primarily through her company, BH&I Consultants, LLC, where she is a behavioral health and intervention consultant, counselor and addiction specialist. Her focus areas include pathological gambling and dual 8

addictions. An acupuncture physician as well, Sue holds certifications from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), as well as the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA). But while alternative medicine is Sue’s current specialty and interest, that wasn’t always the case. A Connecticut native, Sue earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and subsequently became a physician assistant (PA) in New York. Although she enjoyed her dozen years working in the world of traditional western medicine, one of those proverbial curveballs would soon come her way, sending her in a direction – literally and figuratively – that she couldn’t have predicted. “Some twenty-plus years ago,” says Sue, she and her husband Bob Naversen moved to Palm Beach Gardens after

Bob’s failing health necessitated his retirement from teaching. In addition to having undergone open heart surgery, Bob was a recovering alcoholic. Yet he was never too sick to look for ways to help others who struggled with addiction. Sue wanted to help too. “I hoped to use my medical knowledge to help people recover, but I began to see that there were so many patients in treatment who weren’t able to ‘absorb’ more traditional addiction treatment because they didn’t even feel well enough to cope with it.” As a result, Sue, in her fifties by then, returned to school, completing master’s programs at both the Clayton College of Natural Health and the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine. She soon learned the many benefits of alternative treatments/ therapies such as acupuncture, massage, essential oils and mindfulness training in facilitating addition recovery. When her studies were done, Sue originally opened a small boutique facility in North Palm Beach, the first of its kind, she says, to combine traditional and alternative medicine to treat addiction. “We became nationally and internationally known for our treatment of problem gambling.” Eventually, however, Sue decided that the direction her partners wanted to pursue was not right for her. Being Sue, she simply took a deep breath and “stepped back up to the

plate,” creating the company where she works today. Although Bob died in 2006, Sue continues to devote her efforts to the cause so important both to her and her late husband. She currently works with Florida House Experience, a medically integrated program where doctors, psychiatrists, clinicians, and case managers work as partners to solve the underlying substance abuse/mental health issues and to create holistic individual treatment plans. “Right now I’m so excited to learn more about how neuroscience works other therapies to aid in addiction and dual diagnoses,” says Sue. As much as Sue loves her job, she seems pretty content with her personal life as well. She adores her family: her son Chuck Mills, his wife Sarah, and their children Evan (14), Rory (8) and Alec (6), all of whom live back in Connecticut. She’s also happy about being a part of the PGA community. “I have so many good friends here. The people here care about and take care of each other.” Sue recalls how soon after Bob died, she found herself sitting alone in her living room, feeling unprepared for an impending hurricane and, frankly, downright sorry for herself. “Then some of the people Bob had mentored called came over to board up my windows. And I started getting phone calls from many of my neighbors. Everyone wanted to make Continued page 10

sure that I was okay.” Sue remembers how, when the power went out, neighbors “pooled” their frozen foods and had a big neighborhood barbecue, and they walked together to the clubhouse to enjoy emergency lighting, TV – and bagels. “I’ll never forget the sense of comradery,” says Sue. While dealing with the curveballs life throws may be Sue’s only notable connection to baseball, she does keep active. She works out in the gym to stay in shape and particularly enjoys swimming. “Swimming is another form of meditation really…I’m a meditator. I’ve been doing mindfulness meditation for years, and I also use it with my patients,” Sue explains. “Whatever you care about, whatever your interests are, no matter how old you are, I just want people to know how important it is to be open to what comes next. For me, it always turns out to be something better,” says Sue. ——————————————————————————————————— Do you have a story to share, or do you know a neighbor who does? b u s ine s s p ro fi le ANDREW GOLDBERG, GOVIC CAPITAL

Doing What’s Right to Safeguard Your Future By Darla Parris Smallwood, with Andrew Goldberg

Doing the right thing. It’s important to Andrew Goldberg – as a devoted father of three, and as a trusted financial advisor at Govic Capital. There’s nothing he’s more proud of, says Andrew, than his three daughters, ages 16, 14 and six. “Sometimes when you’re busy raising kids and working, you forget what fun is, but my little one reminds me every day.” Andrew spends as much time as possible with her, visiting local parks and beaches and simply enjoying activities. However, being in “good dad mode” isn’t all fun and games, especially when you have one child with special needs. So, as much as Andrew cherishes the more lighthearted moments, he tackles the daily responsibilities too, including making time to volunteer at his youngest daughter’s school. It comes as little surprise that in his work, Andrew takes a similar approach, relishing the interaction with his clients, while also working hard to address their individual situations and needs. With a law degree and two insurance designations (Licensed Long Term Care Professional, LTCP; and Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow, LUTCF), plus 18 years’ experience as a financial advisor, Andrew is well-versed in finding just the right investments and financial solutions for each client. “You may already have someone giving you financial advice,” Andrew says. “Maybe it’s a CPA or a tax

professional, or maybe just the guy in the cubicle next to you at work. I’ll give you a second opinion, and tell you what’s good about what you have – I’ll never recommend changing something if it’s already good – but I’ll also give you new ideas that might also be right for you. I have a reputation to uphold; I’m always going to do what’s right for you.” Because he is an independent advisor (as opposed to a captive one), he “wears no specific hat” when it comes to recommending what’s best. “I’m free to offer opportunities that many other advisors, brokers and planners may not even know exist,” Andrew explains. “With me, you get a comprehensive, ethical and honest approach. I’m not looking to ‘sell you’ – I’ll just help you see what the possibilities are.” He even welcomes clients to share his recommendations with their current “people,” says Andrew, because he knows they’ll agree that his advice is sound. “It’s rewarding to be there on those great days to see clients retire or pay for their kids’ college and know that I helped their financial planning pay off,” says Andrew. “But I believe it’s also my responsibility to ensure that their planning pays off on their worst day, so their lives won’t be ruined by circumstance, and they won’t become a burden to their families.” If you’re looking for an experienced, skilled advisor who offers a straightforward, comprehensive approach to preparing you for whatever lies ahead, email Andrew Goldberg at agoldberg@civog.com or call 561.324.3826. 

New Showroom and Shop to Showcase PB Images Provided by Jefferson Blakeslee

Palm Beach Native proudly announces their new showroom and shop at Elizabeth Avenue Station in West Palm Beach. Their facility is located in the downtown area’s burgeoning Warehouse District, where some 85,000 square feet of industrial building space has been reimagined as a “The Station,” an event-driven, curated retail market comprising 20 individual artists and creative businesses. The Station hosts monthly events at which the public can enjoy live music, food, free drinks and meet some of South Florida’s most talented vendors. Palm Beach Native is the passionturned-business of Jupiter, Florida’s own Jefferson Blakeslee. Over time, Jefferson’s love for Old Palm Beach has grown into a collection of over 700 historical Palm Beach images and advertisements dating from early 1900s up to the 1960s.

Images of Palm Beach landmarks provide an educational and historical look at the Palm Beach of days past, while Palm Beach Native’s Classic Lake Trail Collection features over 65 stunning images (spanning 50 years) of the island’s famous bike trail. Additional images include all of Florida and the Caribbean, and address a theme that Blakeslee describes as “Tropical Americana.” The Palm Beach Native takes its “traveling roadshow” to various markets and events throughout the county, from Jupiter’s Tropic Fest, to The Junior League of the Palm Beaches’ annual “Deck the Palms” holiday gift show. Palm Beach Native can assist with décor for offices, restaurants, hotels, lobbies, yachts and homes; providing prints, stretched canvas, and quality picture framing. b u s ine s s p ro fi le NEWSOUTH WINDOW SOLUTIONS OF WPB

One Stop for Perfect Window Solutions By Darla Parris Smallwood, with Phil Stone, Affiliate President at NewSouth

There are lots of South Florida window dealers who buy windows, resell them and install them for their customers. But doesn’t it make more sense to choose… • A window company that actually manufactures, installs, and guarantees their own products? • A window company that only manufactures and installs highly efficient ENERGY STAR® windows that also are hurricane impact rated? • A window company that manufactures and installs windows designed specifically for Florida, ready to stand up to the Florida sun and heat? • A window company that gives you the best warranty in the industry, direct from the factory? When you’re ready to make that wiser choice, look no further than NewSouth Window Solutions. And be sure to consider these additional benefits that put NewSouth headand-shoulders above the competition: • Unmatched Energy Efficiency: Double pane glass with multiple coats of heat reflective Low-E and argon gas between the panes give you windows that will keep you cool and comfortable, while lowering your electric bills. • Amazing Durability: The uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) frames are UV stabilized and reinforced with structural aluminum members. NewSouth has the only warranty for a Florida manufactured vinyl product that does not say weathering and heat stress is normal. The warranty covers the window and the installation, for life.

Sheer Beauty: The metal reinforcement allows thinner frame profiles to give you more glass and less frame. Windows are available in multiple styles, to fit your style. Single-Source Accountability: NewSouth does it all so that if you ever do run into a problem, it won’t be met with the manufacturer saying, “Not our fault. It wasn’t installed properly,” while the dealer says, “Not our fault. It wasn’t manufactured properly.” If you ever have a problem, NewSouth takes full responsibility – and takes care of the issue. PERIOD.

It’s no wonder that NewSouth Window Solutions is one of Florida’s leading providers of factory-direct replacement home windows, or that (as touted in a recent article on proremodeler.com) the company has grown from “zero to $50 million” in less than seven years. A BBB-accredited company boasting a leadership team with more than five decades of combined experience in the window manufacturing industry, NewSouth Window Solutions proudly serves customers in five locations. For additional information about their factory-direct premium, energy-efficient and impact-resistant windows (as well as a variety of patio and entry door options), contact NewSouth today. Visit their window showroom located at 2526 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach today, or call them at 561.712.9000 to schedule your free in-home consultation. 

Preparing for "The Fall" By Jill Ball, VP of Operations

I know it’s hard to tell sometimes in South Florida, but the arrival of holiday décor in our local shops and supermarkets means we are officially in the fall season. Perhaps there’s no better time than now to touch on one of the biggest dangers to the senior population: the risk of fall-ing. That first fall to the ground may be abrupt and seemingly out of nowhere. “Mom had a little mishap yesterday,” I’ll hear people say. Or a usually independent, mobile gentlemen will proclaim, “It’s the darndest thing, I just lost my footing and tripped all of a sudden.” It’s actually no surprise when someone not prone to ambulation issues suddenly just loses his/her footing or balance. As we age, our mobility starts to decrease slowly. Although diseases like Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis can be an expedient to decreased independent ambulation, we typically do not notice gradual changes in ourselves or loved ones whom we see regularly. That being said, it is important for seniors and those caring for them to implement a system of checks and balances when it comes to mobility within the home and in routine environment(s).

• On steps, use brightly colored tape or paint to mark the edge. • Always check any new medication to determine whether dizziness or loss of balance is a listed side effect. • Since the bathroom (especially at shower/bath time) is where an individual is most susceptible to falling, install handrails in the bathroom and shower/tub and a shower chair in the shower. • Replace pieces of furniture that have wheels or slide easily, like barstools, chairs and kitchen islands. • Use/Encourage the use of a cane or walker if you have/ your loved one has occasional or slight balance issues. Seniors may not always need assistance, but these adaptive tools are excellent preventative measures. • Wear/Encourage the wearing of appropriate footwear that provides good traction and support. • Have your/your loved one’s eyesight checked regularly. • Keep the living area as well-lit and clutter-free as possible.

Consider this checklist for preventing trips and topples: • Check home walkways and paths for rugs or narrow areas/ turns that may make it hard to navigate or create tripping hazards. • In doorways where a transition in flooring may occur, insure that there isn’t a “lip” or “bump” that may snag footing or be of hazard to someone with a shuffling gait.

Regular attention to the aforementioned tips goes a long way towards keeping little tumbles and major spills at bay. For those who require more assistance, VIP America can refer a caregiver who is trained on proper transfer techniques and ambulation assistance. Osteoarthritis: Surgery vs. Regenerative Medicine By Ricardo Leano, MD, MBA, DABA, FACHE

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects 30 million Americans and is the most common chronic condition of the synovial joints. OA can affect any joint, but occurs most often in the knees, hips and lower back. Cartilage covers and cushions the ends of bones involved in the joints. OA is characterized by focal areas of cartilage loss, causing inflammation, pain and joint stiffness. If cartilage wears away, bone rubs against bone, leading to joint damage and more pain. The most common symptoms of OA are pain and stiffness, difficulty initiating movement after rest; limitation of movement, tenderness of the joint and palpable bony swelling around it, and inflammation. Aging, being overweight, injury, and certain activities predispose one to the development of OA. The pain, reduced flexibility, side effects from medications, consequences from surgery and other factors associated with OA can lead to adverse health, labor and social costs. Traditional treatments include education, physical

therapy, assistive devices, injections and surgery. Total joint replacement carries the risk of infections, lengthy and painful rehabilitation, and prolonged absence from work. While cartilage lacks its own blood supply, the cells that promote healing can be taken from your own blood. Once those cells are processed and injected back into your damaged joint, they can regenerate (regrow) cartilage. This simple procedure can help you avoid, or at least postpone for some years, a major surgery that replaces your joint with titanium. The most novel approach to treat OA is Regenerative Medicine (Reg-Med). Reg-Med comprises the intra-articular injection of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), stem cells from bone marrow, mesenchymal cells from fat, or stem cells from amniotic fluid or umbilical cord blood. PRP can be combined with any of the other modalities. When the healing elements are deposited directly next to the cartilage, they allow that tissue to regrow. The treatment is performed in a few minutes, and the patient may return to work in a couple of days. Painful and lengthy rehabilitation is not necessary. Results are noticeable in a few weeks and the procedure may be repeated every few years. The cost of this procedure is, in most of the cases, much less than the co-payments involved in a major surgery. If you or your loved ones suffer from OA, and a total joint replacement has been recommended, visit Palm Beach Pain for a free consultation with Dr. Leano before surgery.
